  2. Trump selects $175 billion Golden Dome defense shield design, appoints leader Trump selects $175 billion Golden Dome defense shield design, appoints leader By Mike Stone and Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he had selected a design for the $175-billion Golden Dome missile defense shield and named a Space Force general to head the ambitious program aimed at blocking threats from China and Russia. The program, first ordered by Trump in January, aims to create a network of satellites, perhaps numbering in the hundreds, to detect, track and potentially intercept incoming missiles. Trump told a White House press conference that U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein would be the lead program manager for an effort widely viewed as the keystone to Trump’s military planning. Golden Dome will “protect our homeland,” Trump said, adding that Canada had said it wanted to be part of it. In a statement, the office of ********* Prime Minister Mark Carney said he and his ministers were discussing a new security and economic relationship with their American counterparts. “These discussions naturally include strengthening NORAD and related initiatives such as the Golden Dome,” it added. Trump said the defense shield, which would cost some $175 billion, should be operational by the end of his term in January 2029, but industry experts were less certain of that timeframe and the cost. “Ronald Reagan wanted it many years ago, but they didn’t have the technology,” Trump said, referring to the space-based missile defense system, popularly called “Star Wars”, that Reagan proposed. The Golden Dome program faces both political scrutiny and funding uncertainty. “The new datapoint is the $175 billion, but the question remains, over what ******* of time. It’s probably 10 years,” said Tom Karako of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Silicon Valley and U.S. software expertise can be leveraged to bring advances, while also using existing missile defense systems, he added. This month, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that Golden Dome could cost as much as $831 billion over two decades. Democratic lawmakers have voiced concern about the procurement process and involvement of Trump ally Elon Musk‘s SpaceX, which has emerged as a frontrunner alongside Palantir and Anduril to build key components of the system. “The new autonomous space-age defense ecosystem is more about Silicon Valley than it is about ‘big metal,’” Senator Kevin Cramer of North Dakota said at the White House event. “So what’s exciting about this is it makes it available to everybody to participate, to compete.” Story Continues “Big metal” refers to legacy defense contractors. The Golden Dome idea was inspired by Israel’s land-based Iron Dome defense shield that protects it from missiles and rockets. Trump’s Golden Dome is much more extensive, including a massive array of surveillance satellites and a separate fleet of attacking satellites that would shoot down offensive missiles soon after lift-off. Tuesday’s announcement kicks off the Pentagon’s effort to test and ultimately buy the missiles, systems, sensors and satellites that will constitute Golden Dome. Trump said Alaska would be a big part of the program, while Florida, Georgia and Indiana would also benefit. Many of the early systems are expected to come from existing production lines. Attendees at the press conference named L3Harris Technologies, Lockheed Martin and RTX Corp as potential contractors for the massive project. L3 has invested $150 million in building out its new facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where it makes the Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor satellites that are part of a Pentagon effort to better detect and track hypersonic weapons with space-based sensors and could be adapted for Golden Dome. Golden Dome’s funding remains uncertain. Republican lawmakers have proposed a $25-billion initial investment for Golden Dome as part of a broader $150-billion defense package, but this funding is tied to a contentious reconciliation bill that faces significant hurdles in Congress. “Unless reconciliation passes, the funds for Golden Dome may not materialize,” said an industry executive following the program, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “This puts the entire project timeline in jeopardy.” (Reporting by Mike Stone and Doina Chiacu in Washington; Additional reporting by David Ljunggren in Canada; Editing by Howard Goller and Clarence Fernandez) Source link #Trump #selects #billion #Golden #Dome #defense #shield #design #appoints #leader Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. Indonesian startup founder bootstrapped a company out of her garage Indonesian startup founder bootstrapped a company out of her garage Dayu Dara Permata, 36, is the co-founder and CEO of Indonesian property transaction platform Pinhome. Courtesy of Pinhome It’s no secret that building a successful startup often involves risk, iteration and failure. Dayu Dara Permata knows this well. The 36-year-old is the co-founder and CEO of Indonesian property transaction platform Pinhome. Over the course of about five years, she went from bootstrapping the business out of her own garage to raising over $75 million to date, according to a company representative and data from PitchBook. “Entrepreneurship is really hard. There’s no instant success … You just have to be ready to fail,” Permata told CNBC Make It. “If you are trying to avoid failure altogether, [then] you’re just delaying it.” “Maybe you’re not trying enough — that’s why you’ve not seen failures, but what it does is it’s really hindering growth,” she added. Humble beginnings Permata, who was born and raised in Indonesia, has always been an overachiever. “I’m born from a very simple family … we didn’t come from money, so I had to really earn everything that I wanted,” she said, adding that her parents were always strict and demanding with her. “I was always expected to deliver, to be number one, to succeed academically,” she said. “I always liked property, because, living with very strict parents — [it was] my house, my rules. So, I thought I wanted to own my own house, so I could have my own rules,” Permata said. She said she was studious, competitive and “always focused on academics” as a kid. By the age of 23, she had already purchased an investment property, the first of several. Upon graduating from university, she went on to pursue an almost decade-long corporate career, eventually landing a senior vice president role at Southeast Asian on-demand services platform Gojek, where she met Pinhome co-founder Ahmed Aljunied. After working at Gojek for about four years, Permata said she felt ready to embark on her own entrepreneurial journey. “I think at the end of my time at Gojek, [the company] was operating in 200 plus cities in all of Indonesia,” she said. “I had worked with my CTO, Ahmed … [He] was always very entrepreneurial. He had built businesses before, and he [said]: ‘Why don’t we start our own?'” ‘Fail fast, learn fast’ So in early 2019, the two began ideating and building the business out of Permata’s home garage. Over the course of about nine months, Permata said she invested about $150,000 of her own savings into bootstrapping the company. “My husband was my first employee. We had our first five team members working out of our [garage]. It was really like nine months of bootstrapping,” she said. “I was also working full time at Gojek, and it was still quite long hours that [I was working there], but we managed to squeeze in time [for our startup.]” Informed by her own experiences as a property investor, Permata knew she wanted to address the many pain points in Indonesian real estate. She said the process of buying and maintaining property was very “manual” and “fragmented.” “All the pain of searching for a home, and connecting with agents … [It’s a] six to nine month process, all on WhatsApp, and you’re dealing with complete strangers … and I thought: ‘Why is it so traditional and why hasn’t technology transformed the sector?'” Permata and her co-founder felt that the real estate sector in Indonesia was ripe for transformation. Try to fail every day, but learn from it … I think that will help you with your stamina in the long run, because it isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Dayu Dara Permata Co-founder and CEO, Pinhome “We tested different business models … In the first business model, we were exploring crowdfunding for real estate. The second business model, we were exploring property management. Then the third time, we were exploring … co-ownership of real estate,” she said. “We went through that iteration almost every two or three months,” she said. After testing a few failed ideas, Permata and Aljunied landed on their fourth idea, which ultimately became what Pinhome is today — an end-to-end property transaction platform that offers brokerage, mortgage and home services. Pinhome was launched in January 2020 and serves more than 3.5 million monthly active users across its website and mobile apps today, according to a company representative. “Fail fast, learn fast. That’s how you get closer to success,” Permata suggested. “Try to fail every day, but learn from it … I think that will help you with your stamina in the long run, because it isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon.” “If you are not managing your energy well, then you might quit before you reach success,” she added. 6. New rapid brain tumour test a ‘game changer’, say experts New rapid brain tumour test a ‘game changer’, say experts Rob Sissons BBC News, Nottingham Dan Martin BBC News, East Midlands BBC Consultant neurosurgeon Stuart Smith said the test could assist “surgical strategy” A new test has been developed that reduces the time it takes to diagnose types of brain tumours from weeks to just hours, researchers say. Surgeons have described the “ultra-rapid” method of genetic testing as a “game changer” and say it could improve care and treatment for thousands of patients. The method has been developed by scientists at the University of Nottingham in partnership with clinicians at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). The research has attracted interest from across the ***, with other NHS hospitals setting up their own testing alongside their existing regimes to gather more evidence about its effectiveness. A study published on Wednesday reveals the method has already been used in 50 operations at NUH and has had a 100% success rate in diagnosing the exact type of tumour. There are currently more than 100 identified types of brain tumour, and clinicians need to identify which kind a patient has to determine the most effective way to treat them. Charles Trigg The new method has returned results for diagnosing types of brain tumours in as little as 90 minutes Traditionally, samples of tumours are extracted during surgery to be taken away, tested, and examined under a microscope in a pathology lab. While the process is mostly accurate, it can take up to eight weeks to definitively diagnose the type of tumour. Stuart Smith, NUH consultant neurosurgeon, said: “Sometimes once we do get the full diagnosis back from the laboratory, we realise it’s a type of tumour that would really benefit from what we call more radical surgery to remove every last piece of tumour, if that hasn’t been done at the first operation. “Sadly, sometimes that does mean a patient has to undergo a second, or sometimes even a third operation, to ensure that all the tumour that can be surgically removed has been.” A small amount of DNA from the brain tumour sample is analysed However, the new technique has seen results returned in as little as 90 minutes, and Mr Smith said it was possible to get a diagnosis while a patient was still in the operating theatre for their original procedure. It means surgeons would be able to perform more radical surgery, if needed, at the time. Mr Smith also said faster classification could allow patients to get radiation treatment or chemotherapy, more quickly, and that the quicker diagnoses often reduced the anxiety patients felt while waiting for test results. “It is a game changer,” he added. Prof Matt Loose has been working on the new technique since 2018 Prof Matt Loose, a biologist at the University of Nottingham’s School of Life Sciences, developed the new method using software dubbed ROBIN. Using nanopore genetic sequencing, he said, scientists are able to choose which parts of the DNA to look at in detail, delivering a faster result. He said: “Sadly most brain tumours are incredibly aggressive and waiting six to eight weeks, or however long, for every subsequent test may be too long for that patient. “Now we can get the results within hours and that can happen within an operation while a patient is still in theatre.” Gemma and her daughter Nancy feature in a new advert for Young Lives vs ******* Gemma’s daughter Nancy was diagnosed with a brain tumour aged just one in 2023. The now two-year-old had two brain surgeries, then high-dose chemotherapy treatment to prevent the ******* from coming back. Gemma, from Castle Donington in Leicestershire, said: “From Nancy’s first surgery to finding out what that tumour was, it was two weeks, and that was two weeks of pure hell and anxiety. “But to have it done that quick it could have saved her that extra brain surgery.” Nancy is now in remission and has become the face of a national TV advert for Young Lives vs *******, a charity that supported the family during her treatment. Brain tumour patient Charles Trigg said faster diagnosis would provide “clarity” Charles Trigg, who lives near Market Harborough in Leicestershire, was diagnosed with a stage four aggressive glioblastoma tumour in April. He was told his tumour was the size of a golf ball. The 45-year-old, who has been treated by Mr Smith, said: “To have knowledge is power and it could be the worst knowledge you have, but it gives you certainty, and having that certainty actually makes life a hell of a lot easier. “The fact they’ve been able to get back data very quickly that allows an extensive team of people to conduct detailed reviews feels like an amazing blend of science and medicine. “The pace is phenomenal, and it gives you that certainty and clarity, regardless of whether you like the information, I can’t change the information, but what I can do, is take the information I’ve been given early – and absorb it, feel it and start to plan for the next stage.” Brain tumours are the biggest ******* killer of children and adults under 40, according to The Brain Tumour Charity. Dr Simon Newman, the charity’s chief scientific officer, said: “The delivery of an accurate diagnosis within hours of surgery will be transformative for all patients ensuring rapid access to the optimal standard of care and – crucially – removing the uncertainty patients face when having to wait weeks for their diagnosis and prognosis.” Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Kings College Hospital in London, are among those now setting up their own testing of the method alongside their existing processes. 10. Thames Water halts bosses bonus scheme Thames Water halts bosses bonus scheme Thames Water has decided to “pause” its scheme to pay out big bonuses to senior executives linked with securing its £3bn rescue loan. The decision comes after Downing Street said bosses at the troubled firm “rewarding themselves for failure is clearly not acceptable”. The company’s “retention scheme” was set to amount to 50% of senior bosses’ pay packets, which could have led to them getting £1m on top of their annual salaries and regular bonuses. Thames had been accused by the environment secretary of “trying to circumvent” forthcoming rules to ban water companies from paying bonuses. Steve Reed told MPs on Tuesday the company had been “calling their bonuses something different so they continue to pay them”. Downing Street added ministers were “clear that, after presiding over years of mismanagement, Thames Water should not be handing itself bonuses”. A spokesperson for Thames said in a statement that following discussions, its board had “decided to pause the retention scheme” and await guidance from the regulator Ofwat, who could be granted new rules to prevent any water firms from handing out any bonuses. Thames said it would wait for the regulator’s steer to ensure the company’s “approach supports both our turnaround objectives and broader public expectations”. “It has never been the Thames Water board’s intention to be at odds with the government’s ambition to reform the water industry,” the spokesperson added. Thames has faced heavy criticism over its performance in recent years following a series of sewage discharges and leaks. Since the dire state of the company’s finances first emerged about 18 months ago, the government has been on standby to put Thames into special administration. The company secured an emergency £3bn loan in March to stave off collapse and is now looking to reduce its huge £20bn debt pile by requiring lenders to accept a discount in what they are owed. The supplier serves about a quarter of the ***’s population, mostly across London and parts of southern England, and employs 8,000 people. It is expected to run out of cash completely by mid-April. Regardless of what happens to the company in the future, water supplies and waste services to households will continue as normal. Reed said he was “very happy” that Thames had dropped its retention scheme. “It was the wrong thing to do. It offends against their own customers’ sense of fair play,” he added. Thames previously said its “retention payments” were not performance-related bonuses covered by the new rules. It said none of these retention payments would be funded by customers. Earlier on Tuesday, Thames chairman Sir Adrian Montague clarified comments he had made about bonuses to a committee of MPs last week. He said he might have “misspoken” when he stated lenders had “insisted” upon the “retention incentives” when questioned on the troubled water firm’s turnaround. “We live in a competitive marketplace and we have to provide the right sort of packages to these people otherwise the head hunters come knocking,” he said at the time. Last November, Ofwat blocked three water firms – including Thames, Yorkshire Water and Dwr Cymru Welsh Water – from using customer money to fund a total of £1.6m in bosses’ bonuses. 12. 7 Foods to Stock Up on at Costco If You Have High Blood Pressure, According to Dietitians 7 Foods to Stock Up on at Costco If You Have High Blood Pressure, According to Dietitians Reviewed by Dietitian Kelly Plowe, M.S., RD Getty Images. EatingWell Design. Foods found on the DASH diet provide fiber, potassium, omega-3s and more. Costco carries many dietitian-approved DASH diet-friendly foods including oats, nuts and berries. Other lifestyle factors like sleep, exercise and staying hydrated also help manage blood pressure. Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure—a preventable and treatable risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The good news is, changes to your diet and lifestyle habits can help lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease, and the DASH diet is a great place to start. Plus, you can shop for everything you need at your favorite neighborhood big box store—Costco! Unlike ultra-restrictive fad diets, the DASH diet encourages: Eating vegetables, fruits and whole grains Including ****-free or low-**** dairy products, fish, poultry, beans, nuts, and vegetable oils Limiting foods that are high in saturated ****, such as fatty meats, full-**** dairy products, and tropical oils such as coconut, palm kernel and palm oils Limiting sugar-sweetened beverages and sweets In this article, we’ll cover dietitian-recommended foods to stock up on at Costco for high blood pressure. 1. Safe Catch Ahi Tuna Canned tuna is a convenient, affordable way to incorporate more protein into your meals and snacks. “Tuna is also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids,” says Lauren Manaker, M.S., RDN, LD. Eating healthy omega-3 fats like DHA and EPA is linked to lower blood pressure. Plus, studies show that eating a variety of proteins from different sources—think meat, fish, beans and whole grains—can lower the risk of developing high blood pressure., “Safe Catch Ahi Tuna is a convenient option available at Costco. It stands apart from other tuna brands because it guarantees a mercury level lower than the FDA action limit,” adds Manaker. Try our Lemon-Dill Tuna Salad between two pieces of whole-wheat bread as a sandwich or with tender Bibb lettuce. One serving has almost 30 grams of protein and less than 500 milligrams of sodium. 2. Unsalted Mixed Nuts “Kirkland Signature unsalted mixed nuts are a great pantry staple to keep on hand for those looking to control or lower their blood pressure,” says Beverly Garden, RD, LDN. A 1-ounce serving contains no sodium, making it a great snack choice. About 70% of the sodium in our diet comes from packaged and processed foods, like many convenient snack foods. There’s also 190 mg of potassium in a serving. That’s only about 5% of your daily needs but it’s still an added benefit, especially as a sodium-free snack. Research shows that consuming enough potassium, about 4,700 mg daily, is key to promoting healthy blood pressure. According to Garden, a potassium-rich diet can help manage blood pressure in two simple ways. First, it helps your body eliminate extra sodium through ******, which can reduce blood pressure. Second, potassium helps blood vessels relax, making it easier for blood to flow and lowering pressure in the blood vessels. “Nuts are also a good source of fiber, and eating a high-fiber diet is associated with lower blood pressure,” says Garden. 3. Olive Oil “Costco is a great place to buy affordable, high-quality oils for cooking and salad dressings,” says Dana Taylor, M.P.A., RDN, LD. “Look for extra-virgin olive oil, which supports healthy blood pressure, heart health and has anti-inflammatory properties.” Studies show that olive oil’s high oleic acid and antioxidant polyphenol content are beneficial for lowering blood pressure, and that’s why it’s often recommended as one of the best **** choices for hypertension. Looking for inspiration on how to use this heart-healthy oil? Check out our 13 Healthy Homemade Salad Dressings Made with Olive Oil or this Olive Oil-Braised Summer Squash. Serve alongside grilled chicken or fish for a quick and healthy dinner. 4. Quinoa Kirkland Signature Organic Quinoa is a dietitian-approved Costco favorite for lowering blood pressure. “With 3 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein per serving, quinoa makes a great addition to any salad, grain bowl or stir-fry,” says Ana Pruteanu, M.S., RD. Consuming a diet high in fiber, at least 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men daily, can help you manage high blood pressure. “Gut microbes digest fiber, which creates short-chain fatty acids, health-promoting compounds with antihypertensive effects,” explains Pruteanu. There are many ways to boost your fiber intake with quinoa. The versatile gluten-free grain can be used in everything from grain bowls—try this Vegan Superfood Grain Bowl recipe—to healthy dessert recipes like our Almond Butter-Quinoa Blondies. 5. Frozen Berries Don’t leave Costco without snagging the Kirkland Signature Three Berry Blend from the freezer aisle. “Berries are packed with potassium and fiber, which play a key role in lowering blood pressure,” says Vanessa Imus, M.S., RDN. Forget about molding berries in the crisper drawer of your fridge. Frozen berries are incredibly versatile and have a longer shelf life than their fresh counterparts. “You can toss them into Greek yogurt, blend them into a smoothie or even stir them into oatmeal for a heart-healthy, antioxidant-rich boost,” recommends Imus. Check out these 14 Recipes That Start with a Bag of Frozen Berries for inspiration. 6. Rolled Oats Registered dietitian Patricia Kolesa, M.S., RDN, recommends stocking up on Whole Grain Rolled Oats at Costco. “Each serving contains 4 grams of fiber or 14% of the recommended daily value. Plus, they’re sodium-free, making them an excellent choice for someone looking to reduce the overall amount of sodium in their diet.” Studies show that people who consumed whole-grain oats effectively reduced systolic blood pressure compared to people who consume refined grains. This was especially true in individuals with hypertension. Check out our Blueberry-Lemon Energy ******, these High-Fiber Apple-Cranberry Baked Oats, and this Easy Savory Oatmeal recipe. 7. Salmon Costco is a great place to buy heart-healthy salmon. Whether it’s canned salmon or fresh, and both offer blood pressure-lowering benefits. “Go for the Kirkland Signature Wild Alaskan pink salmon,” says Lisa Andrews, M.Ed., RD, LD. “While these cans come in 6-ounce portions, they can be split to make two servings or shared with a friend.” Research shows that consuming omega-3 fatty acids from fish can help lower blood pressure by reducing inflammation and improving blood vessel function. “Aim for at least two servings per week,” says Andrews. Check out our Salmon Salad-Stuffed Avocado recipe. Other Strategies for Better Blood Pressure Eating a healthy diet like the DASH diet is one way you can manage your blood pressure. Other lifestyle factors that help lower blood pressure include: Stay hydrated. “Dehydration can cause the blood vessels to constrict, decreasing blood flow and raising blood pressure,” says Kolesa. The general rule of thumb is 64 ounces of water per day, but some people may need more depending on factors like activity level, health conditions, age and sex. Prioritize sleep. Get at least seven hours of sleep per night for healthy blood pressure and disease prevention. Bottom Line Costco has a variety of heart-healthy ingredients to help lower your blood pressure. Aside from adding these dietitian favorites to your Costco cart, try following the DASH diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly and prioritizing sleep to help keep your blood pressure down. AI still key to markets despite tariff overhang AI still key to markets despite tariff overhang Tesla Cybercab or Robotaxi two-passenger battery-electric self-driving car on display at the AutoSalon on Jan. 10, 2025 in Brussels, Belgium. Sjoerd Van Der Wal | Getty Images News | Getty Images One consequence of the tariff tumult caused by U.S. President Donald Trump over the past month is that investor enthusiasm over artificial intelligence has waned. Only three of the Magnificent Seven stocks — all of which have a finger in the AI pie — are positive this year, with Nvidia eking out a tiny 0.07% gain year to date. The dampened investor mood over AI — relative to the frenzy over the theme in 2024, at least — doesn’t reflect the priorities of companies, which are still spending on AI infrastructure and leveraging the technology to find new revenue streams. Google-parent Alphabet will be adding a new AI subscription service that costs $249.99 a month, while Tesla is banking on AI to power its robotaxi ambitions. Indeed, Josh Brown, co-founder and CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management, wrote on CNBC PRO that AI will still be the main catalyst for markets despite tariffs sucking all the air out of the trading floor since Trump’s “Liberation Day” on April 2. 15. Google Introduces Beam, an AI-Driven Communication Platform That Turns 2D Video Into 3D Experiences Google Introduces Beam, an AI-Driven Communication Platform That Turns 2D Video Into 3D Experiences Google is rebranding its Project Starline and turning it into a new 3D video communication platform, the company announced at its annual I/O developer conference on Tuesday. Dubbed Beam, the platform enables users to connect with each other in a more intuitive manner by turning 2D video streams into 3D experiences. It leverages the Google Cloud platform along with the company’s AI prowess to deliver enterprise-grade reliability and compatibility with the existing workflow. Google says Beam may receive support for speech translation in real time and will be available in the market starting with HP devices later this year. Google Beam Features Google detailed its new Beam platform in a blog post. It uses an array of different webcams to capture the user from different angles. Then, AI is used to merge the video streams together and render a 3D light field display. Google says it also has head tracking capabilities which are claimed to be accurate down to the millimetre and at 60 frames per second (fps). Google Beam takes advantage of an AI volumetric video model to turn standard 2D video streams into realistic experiences which appear in 3D from any perspective. It, along with the light field display, develop a sense of dimensionality and depth, enabling you to make eye contact and read subtle cues. As per the company, its new platform replaces Project Starline which was initially announced at Google I/O in 2021 with the aim of providing users with a new video communication platform that was capable of showing them in 3D at natural scale, along with eye contact and spatially accurate audio capabilities. While this project did not completely materialise, it was repurposed to create the new 3D video communication platform which is now known as Google Beam. Photo Credit: Google For enhanced communication, Google is exploring plans of bringing speech translation in real time to Beam. Additionally, the capability will also be available in Google Meet starting today. Google says it is working in collaboration with HP to introduce the first Google Beam devices in the market with select customers later this year. Further, the first Google Beam products from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) will be made available via InfoComm 2025 which takes place in June. 17. Power lines fixed but massive train delays remain Power lines fixed but massive train delays remain Commuter carnage caused by a “nowhere-near-good-enough” power outage will continue well into a second day. Sydney residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel after a live wire suspended above train tracks near Strathfield station at Homebush hit a passing train, triggering a power outage on Tuesday afternoon. Repairs to the overhead wiring were completed on Wednesday morning but officials expected residual delays for the rest of the day. Commuters queued in their thousands at stations across the city on Wednesday morning waiting for a trickle of replacement buses, themselves hampered by increased traffic on the roads. The congested nature of the train service between Strathfield and Homebush caused the widespread carnage, Transport Minister John Graham said. “The fact that power has been restored and trains will start to move through the Strathfield area will allow us to get the network moving again,” he told Nine’s Today. “But it won’t be till the PM peak that we’re anything close to timetable services.” Crews worked through the night to fix the overhead wiring, made tougher by dark and rainy conditions with the high-voltage power lines nearby. At one point on Tuesday afternoon, a 1500-volt power connector was sitting on top of the train carrying 300 passengers. Premier Chris Minns said $1.5 billion a year was spent on rail infrastructure and maintenance so punters should expect a more reliable network. “This is nowhere near good enough, we’ve let the travelling public down,” he told Sydney’s 2GB radio. “I saw (media) today which was damning of the government, and it said it was a shame for Sydney – I have to agree.” Transport for NSW said replacement buses were at full capacity trying to supplement for the lack of trains. “It’s not like flicking a switch and getting the timetable operating instantly,” rail operations executive Jas Tumber said. “We have to go through a gradual build-up of matching crew and trains to provide the frequency of service that we need.” The NSW government announced a fare-free day as compensation on Monday. 19. Democratic Senator Totally Schools Kristi Noem Over This Key Constitutional Right Democratic Senator Totally Schools Kristi Noem Over This Key Constitutional Right Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) hit back at Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday for botching the definition of habeas corpus — the right to due process used to check the government’s power to detain people. “Well, habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country and suspend their right to —,” declared Noem during her testimony at a Senate committee hearing. The statement from Noem — which would’ve been wrong on a high school civics exam — saw her doubling down on Trump administration claims that the president can suspend the right, which is enshrined in the first article of the Constitution. Officials like senior Trump aide Stephen Miller have entertained suspending habeas corpus for detained migrants to clear the way of potential roadblocks to the president’s deportation efforts. On Tuesday, a stunned Hassan swiftly checked Noem over her claim, “Excuse me, that’s incorrect.” Hassan, who worked as a lawyer before going into politics, later continued, “Habeas corpus is the legal principle that requires that the government provide a public reason for detaining and imprisoning people. If not for that protection, the government could simply arrest people, including American citizens and hold them indefinitely for no reason.” “Habeas corpus is the foundational right that separates free societies like America from police states like North Korea,” she continued. Experts havecountered Noem’s claim by arguing that only Congress, not the president, has the power to suspend habeas corpus. Habeas corpus has been suspended on four occasions in U.S. history, including during the Civil War when President Abraham Lincoln suspended it several times before later getting what Hassan referred to as “retroactive approval” from Congress. 20. South Korea vows support for biopharmaceutical, auto sectors over US tariffs South Korea vows support for biopharmaceutical, auto sectors over US tariffs Vehicles produced by South Korean automaker Kia Motors are lined up ready to be shipped at the company’s shipping yard at the Port of Pyeongtaek on April 03, 2025 in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images South Korea’s government pledged on Wednesday more support measures for key export industries, including the biopharmaceutical and auto sectors, which are expected to be hit by U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs. The government will prepare new measures to support its biopharmaceutical companies, as soon as details of Trump’s tariffs on the sector become available, it said in a statement. Earlier this month, Trump signed an executive order aimed at reducing the time it takes to approve pharmaceutical plants in the country. The move is part of new regulations to encourage domestic manufacturing, coming after Trump launched probes into pharmaceutical imports in order to put tariffs on the sector. South Korea’s exports of pharmaceutical products stood at $9.59 billion in 2024, accounting for just 1.4% of its total exports. Still, 16% of the exports were shipped to the United States, the biggest market. The government said it would also prepare additional support measures, if necessary, to complement earlier packages announced last month to help other sectors, such as automakers, chipmakers and steel manufacturers, to cope with tariffs. After a second round of ministerial-level trade talks last week, Seoul is holding technical discussions with Washington this week at the working level, as it seeks exemptions on all tariffs by crafting a trade package by early July. South Korea’s exports were unexpectedly resilient last month, buoyed by strong demand for semiconductors despite the drag from U.S. tariffs, but there are signs that global trade tensions have started to impact its key auto sector. 22. Gaza baby sent back to war zone after open-heart surgery in Jordan Gaza baby sent back to war zone after open-heart surgery in Jordan Adnan El-Bursh BBC News Arabic Gaza reporter Lina Shaikhouni BBC World Service BBC Seven-month-old Niveen needed open-heart surgery outside Gaza In a makeshift tent in al-Shati refugee camp, in the north of the Gaza Strip, 33-year-old Enas Abu Daqqa holds her tiny baby daughter Niveen in her arms. A fan hums constantly behind her to break the morning heat. Enas worries that Niveen’s health might deteriorate at any point. She is only seven months old, and was born during the war with a hole in her heart. As her mother explains how she struggled to keep her alive amid a collapsing health system in Gaza, Niveen, with her big brown eyes and tiny frame, cries and fidgets. “The war has been very tough for her,” Enas tells the BBC. “She wasn’t gaining any weight, and she would get sick so easily.” Niveen’s only chance to survive was to receive urgent care outside Gaza. And in early March, Jordan made that possible. As a ceasefire between ****** and Israel held, 29 sick Gazan children, including Niveen, were evacuated to Jordan to receive treatment in the country’s hospitals. Her mother and older sister were brought out with her. They were the first children evacuated to Jordan after King Abdullah announced plans to treat 2,000 sick Gazan children in hospitals there during a visit to the US the previous month. These evacuations were co-ordinated with the Israeli authorities who do background checks on the parents travelling with their children. Doctors in Jordan performed successful open-heart surgery on Niveen, and she was slowly beginning to recover. But about two weeks into the children’s treatment, the ceasefire in Gaza collapsed when Israel resumed its offensive against ******, and the war was back on, in full force. For weeks, Enas followed the news from her daughter’s hospital room in Jordan, worrying about the safety of her husband and other children who were still in Gaza. And then late at night on 12 May, the Jordanian authorities told Enas they were sending her and her family back to Gaza the following day, as they said Niveen had completed her treatment. Enas was shocked. “We left while there was a ceasefire. How could they send us back after the war had restarted?” she says, frustrated. Niveen’s mother worries about her health in one of the deadliest places to be a child Enas is now reunited with her husband and children in Gaza. They say Niveen did not complete her treatment before she was sent back, and they worry that her condition could get worse. “My daughter is in a very bad condition that could lead to her death,” says Enas. “She has heart disease. Sometimes she suffocates and turns blue. She can’t continue living in a tent.” On 13 May, Jordan announced that it had sent 17 children back to Gaza “after completing their treatment”. And the next day, a new group of four sick children were evacuated from Gaza to Jordan. The Jordanian authorities have told the BBC that all children sent back were in good medical condition, rejecting claims that they did not complete their treatment. The authorities noted that the kingdom was clear from the beginning about its intention to send the children back once they were better, adding that this was necessary “for logistical and political reasons”. “Jordan’s policy is to keep Palestinians on their land, and not to contribute to their displacement outside their territory,” a foreign ministry statement sent to the BBC said. The return of the 17 children would also allow for more sick children to be evacuated from Gaza, it added. But an official in the ******-run health ministry in Gaza told the BBC the children still needed care, and that their return to the war endangered their lives. ‘Forced back’ This is exactly what worries 30-year-old Nihaya Bassel. Her son, Mohammed, who is just over a year old, suffers from asthma and serious food allergies. She believes her son did not receive the full treatment he deserved. “We’re back to living in fear and hunger, surrounded by death,” Nihaya says as her eyes fill up with tears. “How can I get this child the milk that he needs to drink? He doesn’t eat even though he’s just over a year old, because if he eats, he will immediately get sick.” Israel imposed a strict siege on the Gaza Strip 11 weeks ago, cutting off all supplies including food, medicine, shelter and fuel. It said this and the resumed offensive were meant to put pressure on ****** to release the hostages still held in Gaza. International organisations warn that Palestinians living there are at “critical risk of famine”. On Monday, Israel announced it would allow a “minimal” amount of food into Gaza following US pressure. The UN welcomed the crossing of five lorries carrying aid including baby food, but called it “a drop in the ocean”. Nihaya says her son Mohammed cannot cope with the conditions in Gaza Nihaya is now living in a small, tented area in al-Shati camp with her brother-in-law’s family. Her husband and three other children had fled there from elsewhere in northern Gaza, escaping heavy Israeli strikes as the war restarted while she was in Jordan. “I left my children here. I left my husband here. They went through hell while I was away,” Nihaya says as she bursts into tears. “My mind and heart were constantly with them in Gaza while I was in Jordan. All of this so that my child could get treated. Why force me back before finishing his treatment?” As she speaks, the sounds of Israeli surveillance drones drown out her voice. Her toddler runs around next to her, at times almost stumbling into a smoky open fire in the tent that the family uses for cooking meals. She struggles to contain her anger as she recounts her journey back to Gaza. “We didn’t leave [till] 04:00, and didn’t arrive in Gaza till 22:45,” she says. As they reached the border crossing, Nihaya says they were harassed by Israeli security forces. “They started cursing at us. They threatened to beat us. They took all our money. They took our mobile phones, our bags and everything,” she says, noting that they confiscated all the bags of anyone who had cash on them. Enas said the same thing happened to her, noting that her medical supplies were confiscated too. The Israeli army told the BBC that they confiscated “undeclared cash exceeding normal limits” from Gazans returning from Jordan due to suspicions that they would be “used for terrorism within Gaza”. It notes that the money is being held while circumstances are investigated. It has not given a reason for why other personal belongings were confiscated. Nihaya says she has come back from Jordan “empty-handed”; even her son’s medical records were in the bags that the Israeli security forces took away, she says. Jordan says it has given children like Niveen and Mohammed the best healthcare it can offer, and both families acknowledge this. But they worry that a life in one of the world’s deadliest war zones for children will just undo all the progress their children have made over the past two months. “I got my son to a point where I was very happy to see him like that,” Nihaya says through her tears. “Now they want to bring him back to square one? I don’t want my son to die.” Edited by Alexandra Fouché Source link #Gaza #baby #war #zone #openheart #surgery #Jordan Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  24. Rates jump following Moody’s U.S. debt downgrade Rates jump following Moody’s U.S. debt downgrade Most mortgage interest rates have ticked up again today. According to Zillow, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate has increased by eight basis points to 6.85%, while the 15-year fixed rate increased by four basis points to 6.07%. This increase follows Moody’s decision last Friday to downgrade the U.S. credit rating — from Aaa to Aa1 — over concerns about growing debt levels. Following Friday’s downgrade, U.S. Treasury yields shot up. And because mortgage rates are closely tied to the 10-year Treasury note in particular, they jumped as well. Dig deeper: What determines mortgage rates? Here are the current mortgage rates, according to our latest Zillow data: 30-year fixed: 6.85% 20-year fixed: 6.44% 15-year fixed: 6.07% 5/1 ARM: 7.17% 7/1 ARM: 7.38% 30-year VA: 6.38% 15-year VA: 5.71% 5/1 VA: 6.35% Remember that these are the national averages and rounded to the nearest hundredth. Have questions about buying, owning, or selling a house? Submit your question to Yahoo’s panel of Realtors using this Google form. These are the current mortgage refinance rates, according to the latest Zillow data: 30-year fixed: 6.90% 20-year fixed: 6.71% 15-year fixed: 6.18% 5/1 ARM: 7.50% 7/1 ARM: 7.43% 30-year VA: 6.57% 15-year VA: 6.24% 5/1 VA: 6.32% Again, the numbers provided are national averages rounded to the nearest hundredth. Refinance rates are usually higher than purchase rates. A mortgage calculator can help you see how various mortgage term lengths and interest rates will affect your monthly payments. Use this mortgage calculator to play around with different outcomes. The Yahoo Finance mortgage calculator also considers factors like property taxes and homeowners insurance when calculating your estimated monthly mortgage payment. This gives you a better idea of your total monthly payment than if you just looked at mortgage principal and interest. As a rule of thumb, 15-year mortgage rates are lower than 30-year mortgage rates. When comparing 15- versus 30-year mortgage rates, know that the shorter term will save you money on interest in the long run. However, your monthly payments will be higher because you’re paying off the same loan amount in half the time. For example, with a $400,000 mortgage with a 30-year term and a 6.85% rate, you’ll make a monthly payment of about $2,621 toward your mortgage principal and interest. As interest accumulates over decades, you’ll end up paying $543,573 in interest. If you get a $400,000 15-year mortgage with a 6.07% rate, you’ll pay about $3,391 monthly toward your principal and interest. However, you’ll only pay $210,303 in interest over the years. If that 15-year mortgage monthly payment is too high, remember you can always make extra mortgage payments on your 30-year loan to pay off your mortgage faster and ultimately pay less interest. With a fixed-rate mortgage, your rate is locked in from day one. However, you will get a new rate if you refinance your mortgage. An adjustable-rate mortgage keeps your rate the same for a set ******* of time. Then the rate will go up or down depending on several factors, such as the economy and the maximum amount your rate can change according to your contract. For example, with a 7/1 ARM, your rate would be locked in for the first seven years, then change every year for the remainder of your term. Adjustable rates sometimes start lower than fixed rates, but once the initial rate-lock ******* ends, you risk your interest rate going up. ARM rates have also been starting higher than fixed rates recently, so they’re not as good of a deal as usual. Dig deeper: Adjustable-rate vs. fixed-rate mortgage — Which should you choose? Economists don’t expect drastic mortgage rate drops before the end of 2025. In 2024, mortgage rates trended downward from early August to the Sept. 18 Federal Reserve meeting, when the central bank announced a 50-basis-point slash to the federal funds rate. Since that announcement, mortgage rates have mostly increased or held steady. The Fed decreased its rate again at its November and December meetings (by 25bps each time). The trajectory of future mortgage rates will largely depend on the Federal Reserve’s decision on whether or not to cut the federal funds rate at its 2025 meetings. The Fed has not cut its rate at any of its 2025 meetings so far. According to the CME FedWatch tool, there’s about a 92% chance that the rate will also remain unchanged at the Fed’s June meeting. This means rates probably won’t significantly drop in the next couple of months. Dig deeper: Understanding the Fed’s rate decisions — Do we want high or low interest rates? According to Zillow data, today’s 30-year fixed rate is 6.85% for home purchases and 6.90% for refinances. These are the national averages, so keep in mind the average in your state or city could be different. Your rate will also vary depending on your personal finances. Mortgage rates will probably be slightly lower by the end of 2025, but they’re unlikely to nosedive anytime soon. Mortgage rates should go down in 2025, though probably not as drastically as many expected a few months ago. Depending on the economy, inflation, and the Fed, any decreases may be relatively small.
