  1. Nintendo finally explains what free upgrades do for Switch games on Switch 2 Nintendo finally explains what free upgrades do for Switch games on Switch 2 VGChartz’s Mark Nielsen: “The Nintendo Switch has been one Nintendo’s most successful systems ever, both measured by the number of units sold and the quality of its titles, but if there’s one thing this generation has been missing it would have to be the Nintendo Selects line, bringing existing titles that had paid their dues back at bargain prices. With the Switch now entering its twilight years, and there being few new titles in store for the foreseeable future, what better time could there be to bring back this tried-and-true tradition? While the actual realization of it may be doubtful given how rigid both hardware and software prices have become in recent years, that only gives us all the more reason to dream up a hypothetical lineup of our own. For this article the specific focus will not be on those massive multi-million evergreens that the lineup would no doubt contain a few of to cement its value, but instead on games that for one reason or another fell short of their full potential the first time around and deserve a second chance to reach more players at an affordable price. Let’s get started.” Source link #Nintendo #finally #explains #free #upgrades #Switch #games #Switch Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. Swedish MPs back financing for new nuclear reactors Swedish MPs back financing for new nuclear reactors Sweden’s parliament has passed a bill to finance a new generation of nuclear reactors the government says are key to energy security and achieving net zero emissions by 2045. The government plans four large-scale reactors – with installed capacity of about 5000 megawatts – or the equivalent in small modular reactors (SMRs). Half of that should be on-stream by 2035, according to the government. “It’s a question guaranteeing Swedish jobs, for dealing with climate change and it’s a question of Sweden’s security,” Financial Markets Minster Niklas Wykman said during a debate in parliament on Wednesday. Electricity demand is expected to double to about 300 terrawatt hours over the next two decades and the government says without nuclear power, key new industries like green steel, bio-fuels and large-scale hydrogen production will go elsewhere. The government says it supports all fossil-free energy production, but that only nuclear can supply reliable and predictable power. A white paper published in August last year, which proposed a similar model, said the state could need to lend nuclear developers between 300-600 billion crowns ($A48-$A96 billion). Price guarantees would stay in place for 40 years. Critics say nuclear power will be too expensive and too slow to build and would squeeze out cheaper wind and solar which are the only way to meet increased demand in the short term. “It is an item of religious faith for this government to build nuclear power whatever the price,” Birger Lahti of the opposition Left Party said. 4. Ramps connecting 2 major Mass. highways will be closed for ‘most of day,’ officials warn Ramps connecting 2 major Mass. highways will be closed for ‘most of day,’ officials warn Exit ramps that connect two major Massachusetts highways will be closed for “most of the day” on Wednesday due to downed wires, state transportation officials warned. In a traffic advisory, MassDOT announced the temporary closure of the exit ramps for Route 1 southbound to I-495 northbound, and I-495 northbound to Route 1 southbound in Wrentham. “The closure is expected to be in place throughout most of the day to allow crews to make utility repairs to downed wires,” MassDOT wrote in the advisory. Aerial video showed multiple leaning utility poles and wires dangling close to the roadway. Temporary signs and message boards have been deployed to advise drivers to seek alternate routes. MassDOT also said drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the downed wires. 5. Helldivers 2 Boss Johan Pilestedt Is Stunned at New ‘Heart of Democracy’ Record Helldivers 2 Boss Johan Pilestedt Is Stunned at New ‘Heart of Democracy’ Record The Illuminate finally crossed the line. Not content with terrorizing distant colonies, these tentacled tyrants have brought their fight to the pristine streets of Super Earth itself. Helldivers 2′s “Heart of Democracy” update dropped without warning just yesterday, and the response has been nothing short of a full-scale military mobilization. This isn’t just another bug hunt on some backwater moon. The stakes have never been higher—Super Earth’s gleaming metropolises now serve as battlegrounds where every shattered window and toppled monument represents a direct assault on liberty itself. And Helldivers everywhere are taking it personally. Player numbers reach stratospheric heights The invasion of Super Earth has triggered a massive mobilization of Super Earth’s finest that seems to have caught even Arrowhead‘s leadership off guard. Chief Creative Officer Johan Pilestedt, for one, couldn’t hide his amazement at the sudden influx of players rushing to defend democracy: I think this is the largest simultaneous return of players for Helldivers? Team did a MEGA job on the update! pic.twitter.com/14D1qNv2SZ — Pilestedt (@Pilestedt) May 20, 2025 The urban battlefields of Super Earth have clearly struck a chord with the community. For the first time, players are fighting through fully-realized city environments, complete with towering (destructible!) skyscrapers, panicking civilians, and the haunting silhouettes of Illuminate vessels looming overhead. They really did. The urban maps are fantastic! — Dune (@A_Dunesy) May 20, 2025 Needless to mention, the chaos of city combat has injected fresh life into Helldivers 2‘s formula. Nothing quite matches the satisfaction of calling in a 500kg bomb on an Illuminate Harvester while evacuating civilians from a collapsing office building—all while trying not to “accidentally” shoot your squadmate in the back. With such an explosive player surge, many wondered if Arrowhead’s servers could handle the strain. One concerned citizen of Super Earth posed the question directly to Pilestedt: Is the server room a heat hazard right now? — Etienne (@FrenchEwokKing) May 20, 2025 The co-founder’s response revealed Arrowhead had prepared for this moment better than Super Earth had prepared for the Illuminate invasion: No, the extremely talented backend team made sure we can support over 750k simultaneous players. — Pilestedt (@Pilestedt) May 20, 2025 As of this writing, the player count has continued to climb, reaching an astounding 215K concurrent players and showing no signs of slowing down. This surge has propelled Helldivers 2 back into Steam’s top 10 most-played games—in the middle of the week, no less! The call of duty brings veterans back to the front No sick days when democracy calls! | Image Credit: Arrowhead Game Studios Nothing motivates a retired Helldiver like watching their home planet get swarmed by light-bending squids. Veterans who’d hung up their capes are suddenly remembering their oath to spread managed democracy by any means necessary: I’m dropping in TODAY, COMING OUT OF RETIREMENT, FOR SUPER EARTH! pic.twitter.com/EO8X8FYBPB — Frying pan (@ThePanForFrying) May 20, 2025 The update’s genius lies in how it transforms the game’s core experience without abandoning what made it special. SEAF troops now fight alongside players, responding to a simple salute—finally giving Helldivers someone expendable to blame when a stray grenade detonates prematurely. The massive Planetary Defense Cannons let players personally blast Illuminate ships from the sky, creating those rare moments where you feel like you’re actually turning the tide rather than just delaying the inevitable alien victory. I’m about to hop on I’m so excited. Thanks for all the hard work you all put into this game. I’m really excited to see what other weapon attachments you guys cook up. — Pyro (@Just_Pyroo) May 20, 2025 Last week’s addition of the weapon customization system now feels perfectly timed too, giving players tools to optimize their loadouts against the new Illuminate threats. And amid all the chaos, players continue finding those uniquely Helldivers 2 moments that keep them coming back: You and all the staff at Arrowhead have my utmost respect. Your game has brought me and my wife a lot of memorable moments that can’t be replicated in other games — Etienne (@FrenchEwokKing) May 20, 2025 Indeed, there’s something special about a game where your most memorable moment might be accidentally dropping a supply pod on your entire squad seconds before mission completion—and still wanting to immediately try again. Justice Department pulls civil rights investigations into local police departments Justice Department pulls civil rights investigations into local police departments A Minneapolis Police officer rolls up caution tape at a crime scene in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Brandon Bell | Getty Images WASHINGTON — The Justice Department is dismissing lawsuits against a number of local police departments and ending investigations into patterns and practices of unconstitutional behavior, officials announced Wednesday. The pullback from police oversight comes amid major change at the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division since the start of the Trump administration and the confirmation of Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon, who is leading the division. Officials said lawsuits filed during President Joe Biden’s administration against two city police departments — Louisville, Kentucky, and Minneapolis — would be dismissed. Harmeet Dhillon, then nominee to be an assistant attorney general, testifies during her Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing in Dirksen building on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Tom Williams | Cq-roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images The lawsuits followed Justice Department investigations into those two police departments, which described patterns of use of excessive force, discrimination against ****** people and free speech violations in both jurisdictions. Those investigations were separate from criminal trials of police officers from those departments, who were charged over the high-profile killings of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville. Then-Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a 2023 statement announcing the results of the Minneapolis investigation that the “patterns and practices of conduct the Justice Department observed during our investigation … made what happened to George Floyd possible.” In a statement Wednesday, Dhillon said, “Overbroad police consent decrees divest local control of policing from communities where it belongs, turning that power over to unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats, often with an anti-police agenda. Today, we are ending the Biden Civil Rights Division’s failed experiment of handcuffing local leaders and police departments with factually unjustified consent decrees.” Other investigations into policing in Phoenix; Trenton, New Jersey; Memphis, Tennessee; Mount Vernon, New York; Oklahoma City; and the Louisiana State Police will also end. 7. Roof of historic Ming Dynasty tower collapses in China Roof of historic Ming Dynasty tower collapses in China Hundreds of tiles have fallen from the roof of a centuries old tower in China’s Anhui province, smashing to the ground near visitors to the site. Eyewitness footage showed sections of the roof collapsing, narrowly missing a number of people. Local media cited a Fengyang County Culture and Tourism Bureau statement that said no one was injured in the incident, which happened at around 18:30 local time (11:30 BST) on Monday. The Drum Tower – reportedly the largest in China – was built in 1375 during the Ming Dynasty but had undergone an extensive rebuild in 1995. Officials for the county, around 200 miles away from the capital Beijing, said an investigation was under way, in a post shared on China’s instant messaging app, WeChat. Fengyang county is famous for being the hometown of the Ming Dynasty’s founding emperor – Hongwu Emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang. Local authorities reportedly moved bystanders from the scene following the collapse and secured the area. The investigation will be looking at the repair project’s design and construction, a statement seen by local media added. Reports say supervision units were also sent to the site with experts invited to assist in the investigation and verification process. The tower is closed while repairs are carried out, with a reopening date due to be announced at a later date. 8. Mark Gordon blames baby’s death on police manhunt, court hears Mark Gordon blames baby’s death on police manhunt, court hears Daniel Sandford *** correspondent Julia Quenzler A court sketch of Mark Gordon giving evidence at the Old Bailey Mark Gordon has blamed the police manhunt for the death of his newborn baby Victoria. “If it had naturally played out, I believe the baby would have been alive today,” the court heard as he gave evidence for the first time during his retrial at the Old Bailey in London. Gordon, 50, and his partner Constance Marten, 38, deny manslaughter by gross negligence and causing or allowing the death of a child. Their daughter’s decomposed body was found in a shopping bag in a Brighton allotment shed in March 2023, two months after they went on the run. During the previous trial, Marten and Gordon were found guilty of concealing Victoria’s birth and perverting the course of justice by not reporting her death. Gordon no longer has barristers to represent him, so the judge Mark Lucraft KC asked him questions to lead him through his evidence. Talking of Marten, he described her as his “beautiful, noble wife” and “a passionate strong individual”. But he said the couple face opposition. He said it “made it very difficult for us who were in love, sincerely in love”. He told the jury that private detectives hired by Marten’s family were following them and observing them. PA Media Constance Marten and Mark Gordon deny manslaughter by gross negligence Explaining why he and Marten started living in hotels and holiday lets before and after the birth of their fifth child Victoria, he said “she wanted some time with the baby” and the couple never would have predicted what went on to happen. “It was a range of calamitous events, one after the other,” he said. After their car caught fire, and police realised the couple had another baby, detectives launched a public appeal for the couple. Gordon told the jury “if that manhunt hadn’t happened…who knows what could have happened”. “No laws were being broken to justify a national manhunt,” he said. “There are risk assessments that you should do, people – if somebody’s on the side of a ledge about to jump off, you don’t rush them.” He added: “If it had naturally played out, I believe the baby would have been alive today.” “Who gave the command to do a national manhunt?” he asked. “We are not silly people. We are not irresponsible people. “My position is firmly is that had the manhunt not taken place, these circumstances would not have happened. “Paranoia – call it what you want – but definitely not criminal intent,” he told the court. ‘We never wanted her to come to harm’ Talking about how the couple felt when their first four children were removed he said: “When someone doesn’t have a child around them it affects them psychologically… when a parent loses a child they lose part of themselves.” He told the jury it is “bad enough” to lose Victoria, who he has not “had time to grieve”. “When I was apprehended I was dehydrated, malnourished and completely out of my head,” he explained. “It is very important to consider, when you consider this allegation that has been made about us, our state of mind.” As he spoke about the death of “blessed, beautiful baby Victoria”, he became emotional and started crying. He said he was asleep when Marten had been feeding the baby and was in a “state of shock and complete disbelief” when he woke up and was told Victoria was not moving. “It was a surreal moment for me. She was holding my baby’s limp body in her arms,” he said. “At no point in time did we intentionally or recklessly put that baby at harm… We never wanted her to come to harm. I want you to know that,” he said. “Don’t put people in prison who don’t need to be in prison…. We are the ones who have to live with what has happened forever.” “This isn’t the right way to handle this case,” he told the jurors. The trial continues. Chris Brown freed on $6.7-million bail in U.K. ahead of assault trial – National Chris Brown freed on $6.7-million bail in U.K. ahead of assault trial – National Chris Brown has been released on $6.7-million bail after being arrested on May 15 and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent over an alleged nightclub altercation in 2023. A British judge made the decision in Southwark Crown Court and revived Brown’s world tour, which was in limbo after another judge ordered him to be held in custody after he was charged last week. Judge Tony Baumgartner said the 36-year-old singer could continue his tour, including several stops in the U.K., but would have to pay the $6.7-million bail to guarantee his appearance in court. Brown could be asked to forfeit the money if he breaches bail conditions, according to the BBC. Brown’s bail conditions include surrendering his passport if he is not travelling on tour, living at a specific address known to the court, not contacting the alleged victim, not visiting the Tape nightclub where the alleged altercation took place and not applying for international travel documents. Story continues below advertisement Brown was initially scheduled to appear in court again on June 13. If he had been held until then, the Residuals singer would have missed at least two dates on his upcoming tour, the Breezy Bowl XX World Tour, which begins on June 8 in Amsterdam. Brown is accused of launching an “unprovoked attack” on producer Amadou “Abe” Diaw at the Tape nightclub in London in February 2023 while he was on tour. In July 2018, Brown walked off stage after his concert in Florida and into the hands of waiting sheriff’s deputies, who arrested him on the felony battery charge and booked him into the Palm Beach County Jail. The state of Florida later dropped the charges against the singer in August 2019, but the Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office didn’t offer any further details. Mr. Brown is appreciative of the state attorney’s professionalism and thorough review and looks forward to seeing his many fans in Tampa on Aug. 31.” Brown has a history of violent offences. In August 2016, he was investigated for a reported assault with a deadly weapon after his manager Michael Guirguis filed a lawsuit against the singer alleging assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, false imprisonment, breach of contract and breach of implied covenant of good faith. As you might expect from the name, Mattel Match sounds as if it’s going to be a match-three puzzler where you match up toys. But what we do know for sure is that it’ll feature a huge number of top brands from Mattel, including Barbie, Hot Wheels, Uno, Masters of the Universe and others. While some may have hoped for a more action-adventure-type release, I think that Toybox Unlocked certainly sounds fun enough. It promises to take you on its own puzzle-themed adventure, slowly unlocking new items which are sure to provoke a wave of nostalgia amongst older players. And we all know how powerful nostalgia can be. Put your toys away Developed in collaboration with Uken, Mattel Match: Toybox Unlocked is set to arrive in soft launch for the Philippines and Canada, with a wider-scale release throughout 2025 and full release by the end of the year. While many of Mattel’s brands are somewhat quaint by comparison to the heavyweights of today, there are still plenty of heavy-hitters such as the ever-popular Barbie. And while it may boast plenty of features, especially from a storied developer such as Uken, at the same time, trading on nostalgia may not bring in those who aren’t already familiar with Mattel. They’ll especially face tough competition in the puzzle genre. 11. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang slams U.S. chip restrictions as a “failure” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang slams U.S. chip restrictions as a “failure” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said overnight that U.S. chip export controls are a “failure” and warned that the restrictions are doing more damage to American business than to China. Huang said in a press conference at Computex, an artificial intelligence exhibition in Taiwan, that the policies have cut the AI chip leader’s China market share from 95% to 50% and motivated Beijing to make its own chips faster. Huang’s comments came as the truce between the U.S. and China over tariffs and semiconductors continues to be delicate. The ******** Commerce Ministry responded to the Trump administration’s recent chip policy change on Monday, calling the U.S. policy “overreaching” and “bullying,” and demanding that the White House “correct its mistakes.” “The U.S. abuses export control measures, imposing unjustified restrictions on ******** chip products and even interfering with ******** companies’ use of domestically produced chips within China,” the ministry said. The White House scrapped the tiered “AI Diffusion Rule” rolled out by former President Joe Biden in January and promised to fully replace it in the future. Nvidia is stuck in the middle, with Huang maintaining relationships with both sides in a deepening tech cold war. In Saudi Arabia last week, President Donald Trump called Huang a “friend” and touted Nvidia’s massive AI investment. Huang accompanied Trump on the Middle East trip, a prominent representative of the U.S.’s global technology power. But Huang has also kept close ties to China and praised the country’s tech capabilities. Nvidia is acquiring a new space for its employees in Shanghai, though the company said it is not sending any IP or GPU designs there. Huang told lawmakers in Washington in April that China is quickly gaining ground on the U.S. in AI. “China is right behind us,” Huang said. “We are very close. Remember this is a long-term, infinite race.” He also singled out the capabilities of Huawei, which is reportedly developing its own advanced chip to rival Nvidia. “They’re incredible in computing and network technology, all these essential capabilities to advance AI,” Huang said. “They have made enormous progress in the last several years.” Even with the U.S. and China relationship on rocky footing, Huang told senior ******** officials in April that his company would “unswervingly serve the ******** market.” Nvidia’s balancing game continues, reshaping chips to stay compliant and straddling commercial and political fault lines. Huang’s warning is clear: If the U.S. doesn’t rethink its approach, it could lose the ******** market and its edge in the global AI race. Geometric Future highlights new PC cases, AIOs, and PSUs at Computex 2025 Geometric Future highlights new PC cases, AIOs, and PSUs at Computex 2025 The Tom’s Hardware team is on the ground at Computex 2025, and we dropped by the booth of modern and minimalist PC case manufacturer Geometric Future to check out its latest offerings. We’ve seen the company’s new premium full-tower PC case, the Model 9, which features a unique combination of aluminum, steel, and tempered glass. There’s also the new Model 3 MAX compact, designed for those looking for a smaller, more compact solution. Aside from that, there’s also the Eskimo series of AIO coolers and a new line of Power PSUs, available in both 14CM and 12CM models. The new Model 9 PC case sits right in the middle of the Geometric Future booth, where its unique look catches the attention of anyone passing by. Instead of the usual rectangular profile we see with most cases, the Model 9 has all-rounded corners, with its tempered glass hugging the left and front panels. On the other hand, the top and right sides of the Model 9 have a full mesh cover, ensuring optimal airflow for your high-end build. Image 1 of 6 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) More than that, the Model 9 has enough space to accommodate one 420 mm radiator, two 360 mm radiators, a 140 mm radiator, and three 140 mm fans. That amount of cooling should be more than enough to let you push even the most advanced CPUs and GPUs to their limit without being stopped by thermal limits. 14. How Chery is making its cars better suited to *********** roads How Chery is making its cars better suited to *********** roads Automotive proving grounds are mysterious places. They’re usually hidden in far-flung pockets away from prying eyes to keep the next generation of four-wheeled innovations shrouded in secrecy. But not today. Our proving ground is surrounded by chicken shops rather than chicken wire fences. And we’re in plain view of the general public on a test loop through the streets of Sydney. There is no hiding here. Then again, there’s not much to hide, and certainly no need for a disguise, as we’re riding shotgun in a Chery Tiggo 7 plug-in hybrid that looks remarkably like the standard petrol-powered version of the mid-size SUV – save for a few cosmetic details and badges on the outside, and a large red emergency shut-off button on the dashboard – that has been on ***** locally since late last year. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera Icon2025 Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV Credit: CarExpert Ahead of the local release of the Tiggo 7 PHEV in the next couple of months, we joined Chery Australia CEO Lucas Harris during the final phase of validating the local calibration for its comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), which includes automated emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and other key safety functions. Mr Harris is part of group of executives and expert technicians at Chery – both locally and internationally – that test and tune the automaker’s vehicles to suit Australia’s unique consumer demands and road conditions. Chery isn’t alone in doing this sort of local vehicle development work. In fact, almost every automotive brand in Australia has some form of checks and balances process prior to vehicles being delivered to showrooms to make sure they function properly on local roads. Camera IconChery Australia COO Lucas Harris Credit: CarExpert For some, it’s little more than a box-ticking exercise, extending to tweaking minor vehicle features like radio tuning, while others go to enormous lengths – and considerable capital investment – to tailor the driving character of their vehicles especially for Australia. Mr Harris admits that Chery learned an early lesson that it needed to do more than just the basics, especially with the calibration of its active safety systems which were heavily criticised by pundits – including CarExpert – in models such as the Omoda 5 small SUV when it relaunched the brand here in 2023. “We’ve copped a fair amount of, shall we say, constructive criticism about our systems, which I think has all been quite fair,” he says. Camera IconChery Tiggo 7 PHEV ADAS hardware Credit: CarExpert “Every now and then it’s a bit exaggerated, but that’s how the world goes around. I like the criticism though, because it makes it really easy for us to identify what we need to work on next and where we need to improve. So, most of our effort to date has been around how that ADAS system operates.” ADAS systems are a complex array of unique functions that are intended to improve the safe operation of a vehicle. But some are more annoying in how they intervene, forcing drivers to switch off many of the functions, which is clearly counterproductive to their purpose. They are all linked to an array of cameras and sensors positioned around the vehicle, providing it with a binary view of its surrounding environment. It’s therefore all in the computer coding and algorithms of how that information is used – along with the physical inputs of the driver through the steering, throttle and brakes – as to how effective the functions are. And, importantly, how natural they feel to the driver. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Interestingly for us today, the Tiggo 7 PHEV features Chery’s next-generation ADAS hardware and software suite, and will be the first model to make it available to *********** consumers. Mr Harris says the reason Chery is investing in fine-tuning its ADAS calibration for Australia is, quite simply, the huge variation of road conditions we have in this country. “On our drive loop today, which is only about one and a half hours long, just note how many different types of roads we are driving on, not just the surface and condition of the tarmac, but also the lane widths and markings,” he says as we trundle along the narrow three-lane Silverwater Road in heavy traffic. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert “Some roads are beautiful, and others are simply dreadful. Some have hard kerbs on the edge, some have grass verges with lines, and some have no lane markings on the edge at all. That’s just here in Sydney’s suburbs, let alone the variation around the country. “Compare that to the roads in China, which are very consistent, and that’s why it is important for us to get our cars right for the market here. “I don’t think *********** consumer expectations are unreasonable; it is just that we have a much wider mix of scenarios in which they use the vehicle.” Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Mr Harris says a typical tuning program like this takes around 12 months “depending on how rough the starting position is” and begins with initial feedback from the validation group after driving an early pre-production vehicle. From there, the team will debate the outcomes, which he said “can get quite exciting sometimes”, to form a collective opinion which is then relayed back to the engineering team in China to develop corrective measures. Every new software change is scrutinised again over the exact same drive loop and any further refinements are fed back to the engineering team in China. The team will do this over and over until they are satisfied the system operates as expected. “The benefits we’re seeing from this are huge, because all the learnings accumulate,” said Mr Harris. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert “We might spend 40 to 50,000 kilometres on this particular car, but that doesn’t mean the hundreds of thousands of kilometres we’ve done before have gone to waste, because the data is relevant to improving the ADAS in all our models. “Essentially, each time we do this, we’re improving tenfold. And the Tiggo 7 PHEV is easily the best car we have launched yet – and not just because it has the latest hardware in it.” It’s impossible to judge from the passenger seat if Mr Harris is right and how effective the changes are. But even as he and I hold an uninterrupted hour-long conversation with many hand gestures and plenty of finger pointing from the driver’s seat, there is a conspicuous absence of binging-and-bonging from the driver monitoring system. And no sudden sideways jerks from the lane keeping assistance system, other than when provoked it to demonstrate how smooth it is. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Mr Harris says the team has played particular attention to the latter system, and developed some unique solutions to help it intervene more naturally. He showcases this by moving into the inside lane on Lane Cove Road and driving closely, but parallel, to the roadside kerbing. “Here, we’ve got three very narrow lanes and sometimes you’ll be driving with very little distance between the left-hand wheels and the kerb. That’s just the way it is,” he says. “It’s a 70km/h speed limit and it goes up and over crests and around corners. It’s a difficult road for the system to determine. Before, it would have tried to steer away from the kerb just because of a pre-set distance, even if you were driving consistently. But now, we’ve re-set the parameters according to the width of the lane. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert “On a narrow lane like this, the system will be supressed fractionally so it doesn’t feel hyperactive, while it will act differently on a wider country road for example. “I think we’ve found a sweet spot where you will not get unnecessary or unrequired activations.” The proof will be in the pudding when we get behind the wheel of the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV to assess the improvements for ourselves in the next month or so. Until then, keep an eye on the traffic around you because the car in the next lane might just be doing something more important that getting point A to B. 15. Heart attacks at work are rising, and often fatal, employment risk Heart attacks at work are rising, and often fatal, employment risk In January 2023, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s shocking collapse during an NFL Monday Night Football game due to cardiac arrest placed a high-profile spotlight on a concerning, and growing, statistic: each year, more than 10,000 people suffer from cardiac arrests in U.S. workplaces. But unlike Hamlin, whose unique workplace allowed him to receive immediate treatment from NFL and team medical professionals who administered CPR and used an automated external defibrillator to revive him before he was transported to a nearby hospital, many other workplaces across the U.S. are not prepared to address cardiac arrest so easily, nor are the workers themselves. In fact, recent data from the American Heart Association found that seven in 10 Americans say they feel powerless to act during a cardiac emergency. That statistic is exacerbated by the chilling stats that surround cardiac arrests that are not immediately addressed: 90% of nearly 350,000 instances of cardiac arrests each year outside of a hospital are fatal, and every minute that someone who suffers cardiac arrest does not receive CPR, their chance of survival drops by 10%. In the wake of Hamlin’s cardiac arrest and subsequent recovery that saw him return to NFL action the following season, the American Heart Association has worked with him to increase those survivability rates, especially on fields and during other sporting events. There has been progress: earlier this year, AHA reported an increase from 33% to 39% in “bystander confidence” to perform CPR since Hamlin’s story, and subsequent efforts by the AHA and others to increase awareness. Now, AHA says 17.7 million more Americans feel they have the knowledge and training to act in a lifesaving emergency. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is seen outside the U.S. Capitol before a news conference on the Access to AEDs Act, which aims improve access to defibrillators in schools, on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. Tom Williams | CQ-Roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images AHA says there is more progress to be made, and it has teamed up with payroll giant ADP to increase the numbers on cardiac emergency readiness inside traditional corporate workplaces. “Everyone can be a lifesaver; this is a superpower that everyone should know,” Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, said at the CNBC CEO Council Summit in Arizona on Tuesday. ADP has a unique position to help spread that message among workers, with roughly one-in-six American workers using the company’s technology in the workplace. Maria ******, the CEO of ADP, said that after hearing the stats around cardiac arrest in the workplace from Brown and the AHA, she felt there was something she and ADP could do about that, not only in her own company but for its clients. Working alongside AHA, ADP now offers hands-only CPR education directly through its mobile app, which ****** said is already used by upwards of 14 million workers monthly to check their pay as well as access HR and payroll tools. That education includes a playbook and a toolkit about CPR. “The way I think about it is if it changes just one life, and candidly I hope it never happens, but if it does whether that’s at a worksite or it’s in somebody’s personal life, I think that’s incredible,” ****** said. Brown shared an example of just how impactful that knowledge can be: In 2023, the AHA helped facilitate CPR and AED training for all of the NFL teams and their management. Just several days after that training, then Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris was on vacation with his family in Las Vegas when he saw a young boy drowning in a hotel pool. When the boy was taken out of the pool, he had no pulse. Morris, thanks to his training, was able to assist a lifeguard and a doctor who was also at the pool to save the child’s life. “There isn’t fast enough action to save someone,” Brown said. 16. Gearbox CEO Clumsily Defends $80 Games Gearbox CEO Clumsily Defends $80 Games Borderlands 4 is set to release on September 12 for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. You would think the months leading up to it would be full of hype and excitement, but nothing is that easy in the gaming industry lately. Instead, the game might become the latest controversy, thanks to Gearbox CEO ****** Pitchford’s comments about its potential price tag. The industry-wide push toward $80 video games didn’t get much traction, but that was until Nintendo and its Switch 2 reveal. Now, it feels like every other developer and publisher is scrambling to make us pay the hefty price. But since when have these games justified the price? We’re all for supporting developers, but can we at least get a complete, bug-free game? Borderlands 4 might cost $80, and Gearbox’s CEO thinks “real fans” should just afford it Pitchford initially responded to a fan on Twitter/X who asked him not to price Borderlands 4 at $80. The fan urged him not to “take that risk,” saying that many gamers simply won’t pay such a premium. Pitchford had a neutral reply, “Not my call.” It’s a reply we can all understand. Because, after all, pricing decisions fall to Take-Two Interactive, Gearbox’s parent company. A) Not my call. B) If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for ***** Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen. — ****** Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) May 14, 2025 Unfortunately, he didn’t stop there. Pitchford added, “If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen,” referencing his own experience in 1991 when he spent $80 on Starflight for the ***** Genesis. The problem? His words ignore the far more complex economic pressures people face in 2025. In 1991, a teenager could reasonably save for a game while living at home and paying no bills. Today’s gamers are contending with record inflation, rising rents, increased education and healthcare costs, and stagnant wages. Suggesting that they simply “find a way” just feels like you’re saying it without considering the people who buy your game. Comment byu/Valinaut from discussion inpcgaming Comment byu/Valinaut from discussion inpcgaming Pitchford’s implication that struggling to afford Borderlands 4 makes someone less of a “real fan” is also pretty tone-deaf. It ignores our ongoing issues with content quality relative to pricing. Even just this year, we’ve gotten games released at a standard AAA game’s price but full of bugs and quality issues. $80 games need to have the equivalent amount of content and quality Borderlands 4 has been a long-awaited game. | Image Credit: Gearbox Software We have no official confirmation yet that Borderlands 4 will be priced at $80. But all signs suggest it’s a likely outcome. Historically, standard game prices held steady for years: $50 in the early 2000s, then $60 during the Xbox 360 and PS3 era, and most recently $70 as of the last three to four years. But the industry now appears to be creeping toward a new norm of $80 for AAA games. For many of us, the promise of a better-looking game, or even a ******* game, doesn’t justify the escalating cost. Even this year, games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Split Fiction have shown us that games don’t need to cost that much to look good and play well. The idea that a ******* price equals better value has proven to be, at best, inconsistent. It feels like the only exception to this ideology that fans will even consider is Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6). But that’s another discussion entirely. If $80 becomes the new standard, developers and publishers will have to do more than raise prices. We need to see that the extra cost delivers extra value, and they’ll have to learn to communicate that value better. It would set a record Ontario taxpayers will be on the hook for more than half a trillion dollars in debt by 2027, according to the Ford government’s latest provincial budget, raising questions about how the province plans to address the ballooning financial burden. Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy’s 2025-26 fiscal blueprint laid out the province’s medium-term projections, which showed Ontario’s net debt is expected to reach $501.7 billion in just two years. The record-setting amount, if fully realized, also means the Ford government would be responsible for adding nearly $150 billion in debt since taking office in 2018, leading to criticism from fiscal hawks and the opposition alike. “So much for fiscal prudence,” said Nicolas Gagnon with the ********* Taxpayers Federation, who said the Ford government’s policies have added to the “burden” paid for future taxpayers. “Just this year alone, the debt itself is costing approximately $1,000 per Ontario taxpayer,” Gagnon added. Story continues below advertisement Critics also point out that the province’s growing interest on debt payments — $51 billion between 2025 and 2028 — will also squeeze the government’s ability to pay for basic services. “We are spending a significant amount of money — the fourth biggest line item in the budget on interest expense — and that will only continue to get worse as the government continues to outspend its revenues,” said Liberal Finance Critic Stephanie Bowman. In a brief interview at Queen’s Park, Premier Doug Ford appeared somewhat unfazed, suggesting he’s unwilling to trim the provincial budget, especially during a time of economic uncertainty. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. “I don’t like debt,” Ford told Global News. “We have two choices in a budget: we can start cutting and slashing, which I don’t like doing, I never will, and I believe in reinvesting into our infrastructure, into our health care, hospitals and schools.” 13:06 Breaking down Ontario’s budget, its deficit and gloomy economic picture The Progressive Conservative government’s spending, however, comes in sharp contrast to the party’s criticism of the former Liberal government’s accumulation of debt. Story continues below advertisement In 2017, when Kathleen Wynne’s government raised the debt to nearly $350 billion, then-finance critic Vic Fedeli warned that runaway spending could result in a half-trillion-dollar debt burden. “That’s half a trillion dollars, $500 billion, a billion is a thousand million. So think about a trillion — these are numbers that boggle the mind of everybody here,” Fedeli said in the legislature. “Just think of the length of paper we’re going to need to write $1 trillion out with those zeros. Each of those zeros represents yet another generation that will be in debt.” Trending Now Trump administration blames Canada, specifically Vancouver, for role in U.S. drug crisis Donald Trump escalates feud with Bruce Springsteen, calls for investigation Fedeli now serves on Ford’s front bench as his minister of economic development, job creation and trade. 22:58 Focus Ontario: Budget Breakdown Years later, the Progressive Conservative government is defending its own spending by pointing to the province’s credit rating upgrades, a low net-debt-to-GDP ratio and by comparing itself to other jurisdictions. Story continues below advertisement “We’re still in good financial shape compared to some other provinces across the country, but we always have to keep an eye on the deficit and the debt,” Ford told Global News. Critics are now calling on the government to get a better handle on the provincial debt by cutting back on unnecessary projects and saving funds. While the NDP called for continued investment in hospitals, school and housing to create jobs and maintain services, the party suggested the premier’s **** project should be on the chopping block. “I have not met a single person who thinks building a $50 billion tunnel under the 401 is a good idea, except for Doug Ford,” said NDP finance critic Jessica Bell. Ford countered that the government’s strategy to pay down the provincial debt will focus on investment, infrastructure and revenue growth. “We have to create more revenues, as we have before, and then take some of those revenues and pay it down over time,” Ford told Global News. Asked whether he thought half-a-trillion was a “huge” amount, Ford said: “It is.” More on Toronto More videos &copy 2025 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. After Paying Off Her Own Student Loans To The Tune Of $96,000, A Dave Ramsey Caller Says Her Parents Expect Her To Cover Her Siblings’ Debt After Paying Off Her Own Student Loans To The Tune Of $96,000, A Dave Ramsey Caller Says Her Parents Expect Her To Cover Her Siblings’ Debt A recent caller to “The Dave Ramsey Show” sparked a conversation that hits close to home for many borrowers: what happens when a personal loan becomes a family burden? Sarah, 29, called into the show to share that she had racked up $85,000 in student loans under her name and another $50,000 through Parent PLUS loans taken out by her parents. “I did tell my parents, of course, I would help them pay off whatever they put into their name,” she said. And for nearly eight years, she did just that — working hard and throwing $1,000 a month at the debt. “So I have no debt legally in my name,” she told Dave Ramsey. Don’t Miss: But when she recently told her parents she was about to wrap up her part and really focus on the final stretch, she was blindsided. “They kind of told me that they combined my loans and my siblings’ Parent PLUS loans that they took out for them into one big student loans pot,” Sarah said. That meant she hadn’t just been paying off her own share; she’d unknowingly been contributing toward her siblings’ debts too. “I don’t know what to do.” Dave spoke plainly. “You don’t have any legal obligation at all,” he said. “You do have a moral obligation because you promised to pay your part, but you did not promise to pay your siblings’ part. Correct?” “Correct,” Sarah replied. Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — this is your last chance to become an investor for $0.80 per share. When she explained that she had been sending $1,000 a month for nearly eight years. That’s $96,000. What he would say to the parents is, “I paid in $96,000, including interest. That means I don’t owe anymore. Sorry, Mom and Dad. The rest of it is on you and bro. I did my part.” Dave emphasized that while it might be a tough conversation, it’s a necessary one. “Mom and Dad, here’s the deal: I did not promise to pay anyone else’s loans,” he said. “Mine was $60,000 at 7%, and with $1,000 a month for 8 years, the remaining balance would be zero.” Sarah admitted it would be difficult. “Only because, like, they’ve done a lot of other things for me, you know?” But Ramsey responded plainly: “They changed your diaper, but you don’t have to pay them for that. That’s called being a parent.” According to Dave, most calls about Parent PLUS loans involve angry parents who are stuck holding the bill. In this case, he said, “mom and dad are the ones that stepped in it.” “Well done, Sarah,” co-host Rachel Cruze added. “Morally, you’ve done everything to the T.” Read Next: Image: Shutterstock Up Next: Transform your trading with Benzinga Edge’s one-of-a-kind market trade ideas and tools. We wanted to take the series to the next level. So, we decided to drop the numbering this time and go with a completely new title, Mario Kart World. So, we’d already added “Mario Kart World” to the concept art from the early stages of development.” Mario Kart World’s namesake draws from its tracks being part of one large open world. The game even features a Free Roam mode where players can drive around and complete challenges off-track. Yabuki said that he “thought that with modern technology, being able to seamlessly transition between courses and realize a single, vast world wasn’t beyond the realm of possibility,” so this concept, and the name Mario Kart World, were present from very early on in development. The decision to go open world and implement systems like dynamic weather was a massive undertaking for the development team. “The sheer volume of work required to prepare all the art needed to show time and weather changes in a seamless world… We were under no illusion,” art director Masaaki Ishikawa admits later on in the interview. “We were even on the verge of giving up on it at one point.” Historically, Mario Kart games have either referenced the platform they are on or what number game they are in the series in their title. Mario Kart World joins the likes of Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, and Mario Kart Tour in bucking that trend. Mario Kart World will launch alongside Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. 23. Teen’s heroics keeps City’s big-money trophy bid alive Teen’s heroics keeps City’s big-money trophy bid alive Teen sensation Shelby McMahon has pulled off a wonder strike at the death to steer Melbourne City to a 1-0 win over Incheon Red Angels and into the Women’s Asian Champions League Final. With a monster prize packet on the line, City had looked set to head to extra time against the South Korean outfit at the Wuhan Sports Center Stadium on Wednesday. Then the 17-year-old schoolgirl McMahon, who had replaced Laura Hughes at half-time, unleashed a thunderous right-foot drive into the top corner from 25 yards in the 94th minute to send City into ecstasy. “I don’t shoot from out there – I don’t know what I was thinking,” McMahon told AAP. “I went for it and we’ll take it. “You’ve got to take the half-chances if they’re there. “The girls were yelling ‘shoot!’ so trusting my teammates and trusting myself to get us across the line was the biggest, most important part.” City will face ******** club Wuhan Jiangda, who beat Ho Chi Minh City 2-0 in the other semi-final courtesy of wonderful strikes from China star Wang Shuang and fellow capped international Song Duan. City went unbeaten in the regular season to claim the A-League Women premiership but were knocked out in the semi-finals by Central Coast, scuppering their hopes of a treble. But continental glory, and its substantial pay packet, is within touching distance. “It’s definitely redemption that’s for sure,” McMahon said. City will pocket at least $1.25 million by reaching the final of the inaugural full women’s tournament, with the winners on Sunday claiming $2 million. “It’s the first time, so proud that we can represent Australia and be the ones to give it a crack,” year 12 student McMahon said. “Obviously the money means a lot more to the girls in the team than it does to me at 17.” The youngster has had to work on assignments during her overseas jaunts with City. “A couple of times the teacher’s asking me why aren’t I handing stuff in,” smiled McMahon. “I’m like, ‘I’m a little busy!’ So hopefully it’ll be good to show that I’ve been doing something that’s worthwhile.” City had received a welcome boost with striker Holly McNamara cleared to start after recovering from a concussion suffered against the Mariners. The Matildas striker was busy as she notched her first full 90 minutes since returning from her third knee reconstruction. Mariana Speckmaier also returned to City’s starting line-up. Incheon were lively early, then City’s Leticia McKenna crashed a scintillating long-range strike into the crossbar in the 10th minute. It sparked a run of chances from Rebekah Stott, Bryleeh Henry and McKenna and McNamara. Incheon hit their straps after the break and while McKenna skimmed a free kick over the bar in the 76th minute, a flurry of Incheon chances followed. Haruhi Suzuki whipped a long-range effort over the bar, then City goalkeeper Malena Mieres made a wonderful save to turn away a would-be goal from Kim So-Eun. Lee So-hee skimmed another free kick onto the roof of the net in the 87th. Then, with the seconds ticking down, McMahon received the ball from McKenna then let rip.
