Here’s how fusion energy could power your home or an AI data center Here’s how fusion energy could power your home or an AI data center The artificial intelligence ***** has sent energy demand soaring. Some of the supercomputers sucking up all that power are helping to find new energy sources. Fusion energy is the process of forcing two hydrogen atoms to combine and form one helium atom, which releases huge amounts of power. It uses a stellarator, a type of fusion reactor invented in the 1950’s that produces heat. Until now, the technology was too difficult to deploy commercially. But this old concept has brand new potential. Type One Energy, a startup based in Tennessee, claims to have proven that fusion energy will be able to produce electricity in the next decade. “It’s going to create heat that’s going to boil water, make steam, run a turbine and put fusion electrons on the power grid on a 24/7 reliable basis,” said Type One Christofer Mowry. AI has made it all practical. “Things have really accelerated remarkably over the last five or six years,” Mowry said. “The supercomputers have allowed industry, academia and large institutions to develop now and actually test at large scale the science machines that demonstrate the process.” Dozens of other companies are working on different approaches to fusion energy, but Mowry said Type One is so far the only one with the proven stellarator technology to implement at existing power plants. It will soon be tested with the Tennessee Valley Authority. TDK Ventures is betting that Mowry is right. “With Type One Energy solutions, we expect outsized return potential,” said Nicola Sauvage, president of TDK Ventures. “Fusion is no longer science fiction, and Type One Energy’s technology is catching up fast to the vision of this low-cost, continuous green energy.” Type One is also backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Centaurus Capital, GD1, Foxglove Capital, and SeaX Ventures, and has raised a total of $82.4 million. Fusion energy is different from nuclear power, and there’s no risk of a nuclear accident. The power source has no long-term radioactive waste, and, according to Mowry, can’t be weaponized. But for handling AI, it could be a critical solution. Fusion energy can be deployed anywhere, whether it’s next to a data center or near a large industrial park that needs clean, reliable energy. Israeli anger grows at conduct of war Israeli anger grows at conduct of war As Israel’s war in Gaza enters a new, violent phase, a growing number of voices within the country are speaking out against it – and how it’s being fought. Yair Golan, a left-wing politician and former deputy commander of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), sparked outrage on Monday when he said: “Israel is on the way to becoming a pariah state, like South Africa was, if we don’t return to acting like a sane country. “A sane state does not wage war against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby, and does not set itself the goal of depopulating the population,” he told Israeli public radio’s popular morning news programme. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hit back, describing the comments as “blood libel”. But on Wednesday, a former Israeli minister of defence and IDF chief of staff – Moshe “Bogi” Ya’alon – went further. “This is not a ‘hobby’,” he wrote in a post on X, “but a government policy, whose ultimate goal is to hold on to power. And it is leading us to destruction.” Just 19 months ago, when ****** gunmen crossed the fence into Israel and killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, taking 251 others back to Gaza as hostages – statements like these seemed almost unthinkable. But now Gaza is in ruins, Israel has launched a new military offensive, and, though it has also agreed to lift its 11-week blockade on the territory, just a trickle of aid has so far entered. Recent polling by Israel’s Channel 12 found that 61% of Israelis want to end the war and see the hostages returned. Just 25% support expanding the fighting and occupying Gaza, as Netanyahu has promised. The Israeli government insists it will destroy ****** and rescue the remaining hostages. Netanyahu says he can achieve “total victory” – and he maintains a strong core of supporters. But the mood among others in Israeli society “is one of despair, trauma, and a lack of a sense of ability to change anything”, says former Israeli hostage negotiator Gershon Baskin. “The overwhelming majority of all the hostage families think that the war has to end, and there has to be an agreement,” he adds. “A small ********* think that the primary goal of finishing off ****** is what has to be done, and then the hostages will be freed”. On Sunday, around 500 protesters, many wearing T-shirts with the inscription “Stop the horrors in Gaza” and carrying pictures of babies killed by Israeli air strikes, attempted to march from the town of Sderot to the Gaza border, in protest at Israel’s new offensive. They were led by Standing Together – a small but growing Israeli-Arab anti-war group. After attempting to block a road, the leader of the group Alon-Lee Green was arrested, along with eight others. From house arrest, Mr Green told the BBC: “I think it’s obvious that you can see an awakening within the Israeli public. You can see that more and more people are taking a position.” Another Standing Together activist, Uri Weltmann, said he thinks there’s a growing belief that continuing the war is “not only harmful to the ************ civilian population, but also risks the lives of hostages, risks the lives of soldiers, risks the lives of all of us”. In April, thousands of Israeli reservists – from all branches of the military – signed letters demanding that Netanyahu’s government stop the fighting and concentrate instead on reaching a deal to bring back the remaining hostages. Yet, many in Israel hold differing views. At the Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza on Wednesday, the BBC spoke to Gideon Hashavit, who was part of a group protesting against aid being allowed in. “They’re not innocent people,” he said of those in Gaza, “they make their choice, they chose a terrorist organisation.” It is against some of Israel’s most extreme parts of society – settler groups – that the *** on Tuesday announced fresh sanctions. In its strongest move yet, the *** also suspended talks on a trade deal with Israel and summoned the country’s ambassador – with *** Foreign Secretary David Lammy calling the military escalation in Gaza “morally unjustifiable”. The EU said it is reviewing its association agreement with Israel, which governs its political and economic relationship – with foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas saying a “strong majority” of members favoured looking again at the 25-year-old agreement. The recall affects 22 flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt packaged in 3-gallon tubs, distributed to 103 locations across the U.S. This includes centers in Le Mars, Iowa; Wyoming; Michigan; Rosemont, Illinois; and both Houston and Fort Worth, Texas. Some of the ice cream was distributed to food service suppliers and restaurants, including Gordon Food Service, US Foods, and Sysco Corp, as well as Johnny Rockets and Planet Smoothie locations. The affected products have “Best If Used By” dates ranging from March 2026 to October 2026. The FDA has classified the recall as a Class II event, meaning the affected products may cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” if consumed. So far, there have been no reported illnesses in relation to the recall. Since the ice cream was distributed in bulk, it’s unlikely to be sitting in a typical home freezer. However, if you run a business, shop at bulk food stores, or are a customer of any of the affected brands, it’s important to be aware of the recall. Wells Enterprises has not released a statement regarding the recall. But, as with any recall, the standard guidance is to either dispose of the affected product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Protesters interrupted the Microsoft Build session on best security practices and Haiby switched her screen share amid the ruckus, showing that Walmart, one of Microsoft’s most significant customers, was “ready to ROCK AND ROLL with [Microsoft’s] Entra Web and Al Gateway.” The message, posted by Leigh Samons, a principal cloud solution architect at Microsoft, detailed the process for how Microsoft would go about integrating its technology into Walmart’s processes. It also said that one of Walmart’s tools needed extra safeguards. “MyAssistant is one they build that is overly powerful and needs guardrails,” the message said, referencing a tool Walmart created and built last summer that “leverages a unique build of Walmart proprietary data, technology and large language models in Azure OpenAI Service,” according to a January press release. Haiby herself was formerly a member of the Israeli Defense Forces, according to a years-old Tumblr page viewed by CNBC. Haiby did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Texas lawmakers advance bill to clarify medical exceptions under restrictive abortion law Texas lawmakers advance bill to clarify medical exceptions under restrictive abortion law Texas lawmakers advanced a bill Wednesday to clarify medical exceptions under one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the U.S., putting the GOP-backed proposal on the brink of reaching Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk. The changes would not expand abortion access in Texas or list specific medical exceptions under the state’s near-total ban, which took effect in 2022 and only allows for an abortion to save the life of the mother. It also would not include exceptions for cases of ***** or *******. But the proposal is still a pivot for Texas Republicans, who for years have defended the law as written in the face of legal challenges and pleas for clarity from medical providers. Democrats, meanwhile, have called the bill a positive step but also faced criticism from some abortion-rights allies who raised doubts about what, if any, impact it will have. The bill would specify that doctors cannot face criminal charges for performing an abortion in a medical emergency that causes major bodily impairment. It also defines a “life-threatening” condition as one capable of causing death. Senate Bill 31 passed 129-6 and needs only a final procedural vote before reaching Abbott, who has signaled support for the measure. North Texas doctor has mixed feelings toward the bill Three years ago, Dr. Austin Dennard traveled outside Texas for an abortion after her fetus was diagnosed with a fatal condition. She later testified in a lawsuit about how the state’s near-total ban on abortion put her health at risk. Dennard’s feelings are mixed about the bill, which does not list specific medical conditions or include fatal fetal anomalies as exceptions. “What is broadly now known among practicing physicians in Texas is that abortions are ********,” said Dennard, an OB-GYN in Dallas. “Undoing that broad understanding is going to be difficult.” Moves to clarify medical exemptions Lawmakers in at least nine states with abortion bans have sought to change or clarify medical exceptions that allow doctors to perform an abortion if the mother’s life is at risk since Roe v. Wade was overturned nearly three years ago, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports abortion rights. Supporters of these bills have said they have the potential to save lives. Critics, including some abortion rights groups, have questioned whether they make state abortion laws easier to understand. In Kentucky, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear earlier this year vetoed a bill that GOP lawmakers touted as bringing clarity to that state’s near-total abortion ban, saying it would not protect pregnant women. Republican lawmakers later overrode his veto. Last year, South Dakota released a video for physicians that outlined examples of acceptable medical emergencies, which received criticism from abortion rights supporters for not being specific enough. “I think these bills are trying to get at the reality that exceptions are really hard to comply with,” said Kimya Forouzan, principal state policy adviser at the Guttmacher Institute. Still, Texas Republican Sen. Bryan Hughes, an architect of the state’s abortion ban, said the new bill’s goal is to avoid confusion among doctors. “One of the most important things we want to do is to make sure that doctors and hospitals and the hospital lawyers are trained on what the law is,” Hughes said. Navigating exceptions under abortion bans In 2024, the Texas Supreme Court ruled against Dennard and a group of women who said they were denied abortions after experiencing serious pregnancy complications that threatened their lives and fertility. The court ruled that the state’s laws were clear in allowing doctors to perform an abortion to save the life of the mother. Texas’ efforts underscore the challenges abortion opponents have had to navigate regarding medical exceptions, said Mary Ziegler, a professor at the University of California, Davis School of Law and a historian of abortion politics in the U.S. Judges have put enforcement of Utah’s abortion ban on hold in a case over exceptions, for example, and they struck down two Oklahoma bans over medical exceptions – though most abortions in that state remain ********. For abortion opponents, Ziegler said, it’s tricky to craft legislation that does two different things. “Can you provide clear guidance as to when medical intervention is justified without providing physicians discretion to provide abortions they don’t think are emergencies?” Ziegler said. Texas may advance other anti-abortion laws Texas’ ban prohibits nearly all abortions, except to save the life of the mother, and doctors can be fined up to $100,000 and face up to 99 years in prison if convicted of performing an abortion illegally. Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office has filed criminal charges against a midwife for allegedly providing ******** abortions and is also suing a New York doctor for prescribing abortion pills to a Texas woman. Texas Republicans are also advancing efforts to make it a civil offense to mail, deliver or manufacture abortion pills, expanding on a 2021 law that allows private individuals to sue others whom they suspect are helping a woman obtain an abortion. The Burlington Hotel has a long history of hosting skimpies, dating back to the flourishing of the industry during the 1970s and 80s due to an influx of fly-in fly-out workers across regional WA. But, those nights will be no more with skimpies officially off the calendar as new owners Fiona Hutchinson and Brendan Craig pledge to make the venue “the crown jewel of Bunbury’s social scene”. Ms Hutchinson said the professionalism of the girls from Skimpy Heaven was “second to none” and there “was no issues at all”, but ultimately the industry did bring a reputation which they wanted to shed. “As far as we’re concerned, we were actually alienating more than 50 per cent of the population because so many males didn’t feel comfortable as well,” she said. “So many people talk to us about how they met at the Burly, they had their anniversary at the Burly, they grew up coming to the Burly and we want to be able to recreate that. “We’ve heard a lot of stories and we felt that having the skimpies just didn’t fit in with our vision of having an inclusive venue — an entertainment venue for everybody that feels comfortable and safe.” Ms Hutchinson said she didn’t believe skimpies were necessarily disrespectful to women, but they did bring a “perception” which largely drove women away.
