Kid Cudi testifies at Diddy trial about Molotov ********* attack on Porsche

Reporting fromNew York courtGetty Images
Scott Mescudi, or Kid Cudi, leaves the Lower Manhattan courthouse after testifying in the Diddy trial.
Rapper Kid Cudi, the biggest star yet to take the witness stand in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ trial, alleged that the rap mogul threatened him and was behind a Molotov ********* attack that damaged his Porsche.
Cudi, whose legal name is Scott Mescudi, testified for about two hours on Thursday, answering questions about his relationship with Combs’ ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, who testified last week.
The star told the court he also believed Combs was involved in a break-in at his home; later, Combs’ lawyer emphasised that there was no evidence of Combs’ involvement with either.
Mr Mescudi was among several witnesses who testified Thursday as the third week of the trial ended before the long Memorial Day weekend.
Combs is facing possible life in prison if convicted on charges of racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has denied the charges and pleaded not guilty.
The rapper separately denied accusations in a barrage of civil lawsuits that echo some of the claims made in his criminal case.
“Are you in my house?”US Federal Courts
A hole in Mescudi’s Porsche’s roof where a Molotov ********* was allegedly thrown
Mr Mescudi told the court he and Ms Ventura dated for a few months in 2011 after Combs asked him to record music with her. Mr Mescudi testified about a series of incidents involving Combs.
The first happened in December 2011, when Mr Mescudi said he got a frantic call from Ms Ventura, who said Combs found out the two were seeing each other.
Mr Mescudi testified that he took Mrs Ventura to a hotel for safety, then got a call from a mutual friend, who said Combs and an another person were inside Mr Mescudi’s Los Angeles home.
Mr Mescudi told the court he immediately got into his car and drove to his home, calling Combs on the way.
Combs answered the phone, he testified.
“(Expletive) are you in my house?” Mr Mescudi recalled asking Combs.
He alleged that Combs told him he wanted to talk and responded, “I’m over here waiting for you.”
Mr Mescudi said he arrived at his home to find his security cameras facing the wrong way and unopened Christmas presents for his family rifled through. His dog also was locked in the bathroom and was acting “jittery and on edge”.
He tried to call Combs again. “I wanted to confront him, I wanted to fight him,” Mr Mescudi said on the stand.
He said he reported the incident to police.

A red interior of Mescudi’s car covered in ****** burn marks
Mr Mescudi also told the court that shortly after his relationship with Ventura ended, in January 2012, his car was bombed with a Molotov *********.
Mr Mescudi testified that he got a call from his dogsitter who said his car was on fire. He told the court that he came home to find a hole cut in the roof of his Porche and an explosive inside.
Prosecutors showed the jury photos of the interior of the car, which was charred.
Mr Mescudi accuses Combs of being behind the incident, though the mogul denied any involvement at a later meeting.
The jury also heard from makeup artist Mylah Morales, who told the court that she “feared for her life” after witnessing Mrs Ventura with a ****** eye, split lip and knots in her head on one occasion.
Frederic Zemmour, the general manager of a hotel where Combs often booked, also testified about deep cleaning after Combs stayed there. The front desk noted that the guest “always spills candle wax on everything” and uses excessive amounts of oil.
When the trial resumes on Tuesday next week, the jury is expected to hear from Capricorn Clark, the woman who called Mr Mescudi when Combs was allegedly breaking into his home.

Moment *********** politician signs off career with a ‘shoey’
An outgoing state MP caused a scene in Western Australia’s parliament after he ended his valedictory speech with a shoey – the act of having a celebratory drink, typically alcohol, out of a shoe.
Kyle McGinn ended his farewell address by cracking open a beer and drinking it from his removed shoe, which he says he became known for doing by his constituents.
McGinn told local media he did it to show there were normal people in parliament and to celebrate in his own way.

Sam Altman might be on track to deliver to “the biggest tech disruption since the iPhone” — after OpenAI’s latest acquisition

We’ve known for a while now that Sam Altman has been working closely with Apple’s former design legend Jony Ive. While details about the collaboration have remained under the wraps, OpenAI’s CEO indicated that partnering with the design guru could lead to the biggest tech disruption since the iPhone launched in 2007.
Unsurprisingly, OpenAI just announced that it has acquired Ive’s AI device startup, io, for approximately $6.5 billion. The acquisition uniquely positions OpenAI to take on tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Samsung in the hardware department with AI-powered devices.
This is by far the most significant purchase OpenAI has made, followed closely by the recent acquisition of Windsurf for $3 billion to bolster its AI models’ coding capabilities. The ChatGPT maker has enjoyed considerable success in the AI landscape, with ChatGPT gaining broad adoption across the world, though Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella argues that OpenAI had a two-year runway to build the chatbot uncontested.
Following io’s acquisition, the AI firm will not only be able to develop AI-powered devices but also leverage Jony Ive’s skillset alongside his team, which predominantly comprises former Apple designers.
While Apple has seemingly failed to deliver on its overpromised AI strategy with Apple Intelligence’s delay, the iPhone remains one of the most iconic devices ever developed, with a huge user base worldwide.
It’ll be interesting to see what Altman and Jony Ive cook up in the foreseeable future, which could tentatively ship in 2026. While speaking to Bloomberg, Sam Altman subtly disclosed that the first product they intend to develop won’t necessarily be a direct competitor of Apple’s iPhone:
“In the same way that the smartphone didn’t make the laptop go away, I don’t think our first thing is going to make the smartphone go away. It is a totally new kind of thing.”
Jony recently gave me one of the prototypes of the device for the first time to take home, and I’ve been able to live with it, and I think it is the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen.
OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman
Per a report by The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI and Jony Ive’s LoveFrom have been working on headphones and devices with cameras over the past two years. Interestingly, the veteran designer says the first product they developed in collaboration “completely captured our imagination.”

Nicole Kidman stuns in copper coloured wig for Allure magazine
Nicole Kidman has debuted a new vibrant hair colour and style after she had fans thinking she had chopped her locks at this year’s Met Gala.
The Oscar-winning actress stunned on the cover of Allure magazine’s May edition, where she looked almost unrecognisable at first glance.
Kidman was photographed for one look in a copper coloured wig that fell to her shoulders and featured a fringe, courtesy of hairstylist Evanie Frausto.
In another photo, she wore a slinky fuchsia slip dress and changed her wig up to a shorter style with uneven bangs.
Another look saw the Nine Perfect Strangers star pose in a revealing red lingerie garment that only had sheer material to cover her chest.

Earlier this month, Kidman caused quite the stir on the Met Gala 2025 red carpet, posing for photographers in a two-tone pixie hairstyle.
However, she was in fact wearing a wig, a trend she seems to be loving at the moment.
She silenced speculations in an interview with Channel Seven’s Sunrise.
“Everyone’s like, ‘Did you chop your hair off?’ I’m like, ‘No, I did not,’” Kidman said.

Two Romanian nationals accused of $800k ATM card-skimming scheme
Two Romanian nationals accused of $800k ATM card-skimming scheme
Two Romanian nationals have been accused of stealing $800,000 from ATMs across Sydney in a cunning scheme.
The *********** Federal Police arrested the men, aged 48 and 41, for their alleged roles in the scheme and they have been charged with money laundering and stealing financial information.
Police allege the men inserted skimmers – thin metal devices – into ATMs that captured the financial data stored on the magnetic strips of bank cards and was accessed upon retrieval.
Using the skimmers, the men are accused of cloning bank cards with the stolen data and defrauding victims of more than $800,000.
Camera IconThe men used skimmers to obtain personal financial information of ATM users and stole $800,000 in the process. AFP Credit: Supplied
The skimming scheme was used on ATMs across Sydney suburbs such as Chatswood, Darlinghurst, Burwood and Haymarket, and in the Illawarra suburbs of Warilla, Shellharbour, Fairy Meadow, Warrawong and Berkeley.
The men obscured pinhole cameras on ATM machines to avoid detection, police allege.
Investigations began in April after banks provided intelligence about Sydney ATMs being tampered with.
A search warrant was executed by the AFP at the men’s home in Chatswood and a storage facility in Homebush on Thursday.
The pair were soon arrested and a third man was questioned and released pending further inquiries.
AFP Superintendent Marie Andersson said the card scheme “stole more than $800,000 from hardworking Australians and went straight into the pockets of criminals”.
“These brazen schemes hurt hardworking Australians who are already feeling the financial pinch,” she said.
“The men who were living in Chatswood are scheduled to appear before Hornsby Local Court today charged with money-laundering offences, dishonestly obtaining or dealing in personal financial information and other passport offences.”
Camera IconIt’s alleged hundreds of thousands of dollars were stolen in the ATM card-skimming scheme, but the exact figure remains unknown. AFP Credit: Supplied
Ms Andersson said the number of alleged victims was unknown but was likely to be in the thousands.
“It’s extremely difficult to detect if an ATM has been tampered, so we encourage (alleged) victims if they see if there’s been some unauthorised transactions in their bank account to financial institutions, go to the *********** cybercrime security website and they will be able to report it through that avenue,” she said
The pair are set to appear before court on Friday to face charges of laundering money worth $100,000 or more and dishonestly obtaining or dealing in personal financial information.
The 48-year-old man was also charged with importing the skimmers with intent to dishonestly obtain or deal in personal financial information.
Meanwhile, the 41-year man has also been slapped with additional passport offences, including possession of a false foreign travel document and submitting false or misleading information to a reporting entity.
Police say if convicted, the men will face a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment for the money-laundering charge and three years’ imprisonment for possession and dishonest use of financial information.

FBI Warns of New Cell Phone Scam
FBI Warns of New Cell Phone Scam
Yahoo is using AI to generate takeaways from this article. This means the info may not always match what’s in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways
The FBI has issued an advisory to all cell phone users warning them against what it calls an “ongoing malicious text and voice messaging campaign.”
In a Public Service Announcement this month, the FBI warned of “malicious actors” that have been impersonating senior US officials as part of a scam beginning in April of 2025. The FBI notes that many of those targeted by the scam have been current or former senior U.S. federal or state government officials and their contacts.
The FBI warns that if you do receive a message from someone claiming to be a U.S. official, “do not assume it is authentic.”
“The malicious actors have sent text messages and AI-generated voice messages — techniques known as smishing and vishing, respectively — that claim to come from a senior US official in an effort to establish rapport before gaining access to personal accounts,” the FBI wrote in a recent advisory.
“One way the actors gain such access is by sending targeted individuals a malicious link under the guise of transitioning to a separate messaging platform. Access to personal or official accounts operated by US officials could be used to target other government officials, or their associates and contacts, by using trusted contact information they obtain. Contact information acquired through social engineering schemes could also be used to impersonate contacts to elicit information or funds,” the FBI’s alert warned.
The FBI offered a few tips for how to spot one of these fake messages:
Verify the identity of the person calling you or sending text or voice messages. Before responding, research the originating number, organization, and/or person purporting to contact you. Then independently identify a phone number for the person and call to verify their authenticity.
Carefully examine the email address; messaging contact information, including phone numbers; URLs; and spelling used in any correspondence or communications. Scammers often use slight differences to deceive you and gain your trust. For instance, actors can incorporate publicly available photographs in text messages, use minor alterations in names and contact information, or use AI-generated voices to masquerade as a known contact.
Look for subtle imperfections in images and videos, such as distorted hands or feet, unrealistic facial features, indistinct or irregular faces, unrealistic accessories such as glasses or jewelry, inaccurate shadows, watermarks, voice call lag time, voice matching, and unnatural movements.
Listen closely to the tone and word choice to distinguish between a legitimate phone call or voice message from a known contact and AI-generated voice cloning, as they can sound nearly identical.
AI-generated content has advanced to the point that it is often difficult to identify. When in doubt about the authenticity of someone wishing to communicate with you, contact your relevant security officials or the FBI for help.
The FBI warns never to share sensitive information with people you have met only online or over the phone. The bureau also warned never to send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to someone you do not know, never to click on any links in an email or text message until you independently confirm the sender’s identity, and to be careful what you download onto your devices.
With AI becoming more and more advanced, criminals are increasingly able to make voices and messages sound like someone you may know. The FBI suggests using a secret word or phrase with your family members to verify their identities.

But now that the U.S. and NATO are pivoting their focus to the Arctic for geoeconomic and security reasons, Moscow is getting tetchy about the West’s newfound interest.
That’s perhaps to be expected, given Russia’s territorial stake in the region: Russia spans 53% (or over 22,990 miles) of the Arctic Ocean coastline, and out of its population of around 146 million people, 2.5 millions Russians live and work there, according to the Arctic Institute, a center for circumpolar security studies.
For locals — and the wider Russian economy — strategic drivers of jobs, investment and growth include oil, gas and mineral extraction industries, fisheries, and infrastructure and transportation logistics, particularly related to the Northern Sea Route, a major Arctic shipping route for Russia between Europe and Asia.
In addition, Russia maintains its sea-based nuclear deterrent in the Arctic and has a number of military bases and airfields there, as well a specialized fleet of ice breakers to facilitate trade, transportation and resource extraction in the territory.
This is why Russia watches closely when U.S. President Donald Trump says he’s going to take over the resource-rich Arctic island of Greenland, or when NATO carries out Arctic war games.
“NATO countries in general are increasingly designating the Far North as a springboard for possible conflicts,’ Russian President Vladimir Putin commented as NATO allies conducted war drills in Norway in March that involved 10,000 NATO troops from nine allied nations.
The exercises were designed, NATO said, to hone their skills, military capabilities and cooperation for extreme cold weather warfare.

Putin was not convinced, stating that it “is obvious that the role and importance of the Arctic both for Russia and for the whole world is growing. But, unfortunately, geopolitical competition, the struggle for positions in this region, is also intensifying.”
Shortly after NATO’s exercises, Russia’s Northern Fleet (tasked with defending the Arctic seas along Northern Russia, including the Barents Sea and Kara Sea) begun exercises in the Arctic involving 20 ships and around 1,500 personnel, Russian news agency Interfax reported.
CNBC has contacted the Kremlin for further comment and is awaiting a response.
Russia defending interests
Russia is looking to aggressively expand its economic interests in the Arctic, with the region contributing significant value to the economy.
“Today, the Arctic already produces 7.5% of Russia’s gross domestic product and more than 11% of its exports,” Alexey Chekunkov, minister for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic, said last week in comments reported by newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta, and translated by Google.
Russia was “implementing global-scale investment projects in the Arctic and developing the world’s largest network of Arctic cities,” he added.
“As the projects that have already begun are implemented, the importance of the Arctic in Russia’s economy, logistics, and security will only increase,” Chekunkov said, noting that “it is difficult to overestimate the importance of the Northern Sea Route, which provides a 40% shorter route between Europe and Asia.”

International sanctions designed to degrade Russia’s oil and gas sector following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022 have affected some big projects in the region, with liquefied natural gas (LNG) output from the Arctic LNG 2 project and a mega oil project planned by Vostok Oil among the major infrastructure projects hit by Western sanctions.
Russia has looked to evade sanctions by using a so-called “shadow fleet” of vessels and tankers to export its oil and gas supplies to customers still willing to buy them, with Ukraine’s Western allies playing catch-up to try to close loopholes that have allowed Moscow to do this.
Marie-Anne Coninsx, former EU ambassador for the Arctic, told CNBC Wednesday that the Arctic was “of crucial strategic interest for Russia, economically and [in terms of] security. It’s an enormous source of GDP because of the extraction of energy resources, and the use of the Northern Sea Route is an enormous income for Russia. And with this income, and despite the sanctions, Russia has been able to finance one third of the cost of the war in Ukraine with these exports,” she told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe.”
“The sanctions are having an effect but should go further, because it it is touching the the Russian economy, but there is the other aspect of security, because Russians known its nuclear powers are in the Arctic, and this is a serious threat for Europe,” she said.
The West playing catch-up?
One of the problems for Europe and NATO’s Arctic strategy is that it is only playing catch-up when compared to Russia’s long-standing development of its Arctic territory.
Russia began reinvesting in Arctic affairs in the mid-2000s, said analysts at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), adding that “the Kremlin remains adamant in asserting complete control over the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation,” as it looks to protect perceived vital interests along the Northern Sea Route.
In contrast, the West’s renewed interest in the Arctic has been largely spurred by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“Until [that], I would say there was no real NATO awareness of the security threat in the Arctic, it was neglecting its northern flank,” former EU ambassador to the Arctic Coninsx told CNBC.
“But due to the invasion of Russia in Ukraine, and particularly thanks to the new membership [in the alliance] of Sweden and Finland, there is a strengthening security force from NATO in northern Europe … And for the European Union, it has become more important for geo-economic and geopolitical security reasons.”
The Arctic “is becoming the center of world attention” also for “geoeconomic reasons” — including the fact that climate change meant the wealth of natural resources and critical minerals in the Arctic were now more accessible, and there are more shipping opportunities along the Northern Sea Route.
“Therefore there is an increased interest also for major geopolitical players, not only of the U.S., but also from non-Arctic states, major ones like China,” she said.
U.S. Marines in military vehicles are pictured as they participate in a military exercise called “Cold Response 2022”, gathering around 30,000 troops from NATO member countries plus Finland and Sweden, amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, near Bjerkvik in the Arctic Circle, Norway, March 24, 2022.

U.S. interest in the Arctic has also been renewed by the Trump administration, with the president vowing to take over Greenland, potentially with military force. That did not go down well in either Greenland, Denmark or Europe, with widespread condemnation of the president’s posture on the matter.
Interestingly, Russia seemed to take a more sanguine position on Trump’s interest, saying it was watching developments closely.
Eyeing an opportunity to leverage its own experience in the “Far North” around the Arctic Circle, and perhaps to ingratiate itself with Trump, Bloomberg reported in February that Moscow was interested in developing joint projects with the U.S. around natural resource extraction and transportation in the Arctic.
CNBC has asked the Kremlin and White House for further comment on the report and is awaiting a response.

Political leader’s partner mired in misused funds claim
Political leader’s partner mired in misused funds claim
The husband of a territory chief minister is at the centre of allegations public funds have been misused at a popular waterfront precinct.
Conflict of interest allegations involving the Darwin Waterfront Corporation have been referred to the Northern Territory parliament’s public accounts committee by Opposition Leader Selena Uibo.
The Country Liberal Party government and the waterfront corporation deny any wrongdoing.
Sam Burke, NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchario’s husband, has worked at the corporation since January 2016.
Ms Uibo told parliament the allegations were too serious and the public money involved too significant to be “swept under the rug”.
“After months of dodging integrity questions, this government is now desperate to avoid scrutiny and is systematically shutting down accountability measures in parliament,” the Labor leader said.
The government had handed the Darwin Waterfront an even ******* budget, while Tourism Minister and Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby refused to release a briefing she received on the allegations, Ms Uibo said.
“Territorians deserve transparency, not cover-ups.”
The waterfront corporation is a statutory authority set up by the NT government to control one of the Top End’s most popular recreational precincts, including a wave lagoon, beaches, parks, restaurants, bars and other attractions.
Ms Uibo said under parliamentary privilege that among the claims was the “alleged creation of a made-up, part-time job for Mr Sam Burke”, the waterfront corporation’s deputy chief executive.
She said the role was “reportedly unadvertised” and allegedly resulted in a $60,000 salary increase through a temporary higher duties allowance.
The opposition leader also referred to reports of public service rules being repeatedly breached, roles not advertised, promotions bypassing merit-based reviews and job evaluation processes ignored to benefit certain individuals.
The chief minister’s office told AAP she would not be commenting, but Ms Boothby said “unsubstantiated online claims” about the waterfront corporation had already been reviewed.
“The review found no evidence of wrongdoing,” she said in a statement, noting the claims related to a ******* when Labor was in power.
Ms Boothby implicitly defended waterfront corporation executives including Mr Burke, labelling the accusations “a disgraceful attempt by the leader of the opposition to tear down individual public servants for her own political gain”.
The waterfront corporation’s board released a statement on Thursday saying it “categorically denies any wrongdoing and welcomes the opportunity to respond to any matters raised by participating in any inquiry”.
The board said it had been subject to annual audits by the NT auditor-general.
“These audits, conducted in accordance with the relevant NT laws and with reference to the Commonwealth corporations law, have consistently found no evidence to support any finding of financial or governance misconduct,” it said.
The five-member public accounts committee will decide whether to accept Ms Uibo’s referral and investigate the allegations.

What Is FSR Redstone? Secret AMD Tech May Dethrone DLSS
What Is FSR Redstone? Secret AMD Tech May Dethrone DLSS
AMD unleashed a flurry of announcements at its Computex Keynote of 2025, revealing a ton of exciting new tech and hardware. In addition to its various improvements in AI, machine learning, and the upcoming RX 9060 XT, improvements to FSR upscaling were also announced.
Another interesting point of discussion was FSR ‘Redstone’, a next-generation upscaler that aimed to bridge the gap between FSR 4 and DLSS even further. It’s quite an exciting release, and could very well dethrone DLSS in the future.
AMD’s FSR Redstone, explained
It would appear that AMD is not done with FSR. Speaking out at Computex 2025, the tech giant unveiled its plans for FSR 4, as well as a next-generation version of the same, dubbed FSR: Redstone.
FSR Redstone will only work on RDNA 4 GPUs | Image Credits: AMD
It should be noticed here that FSR 4 has already been known to be quite an effective upscaling solution, which has been proven to be able to go toe to toe with Nvidia’s own DLSS. However, DLSS still manages to edge out by a small margin, offering sizable gains in performance with fewer degradations in image quality.
FSR 4 was already a massive step up over FSR 3.1, but AMD seems to be aiming to refine the formula even further with Redstone. While we really do not have a ton of information on hand currently, we do know that Redstone is based on these 3 major keystones:
Neural Radiance Caching
Machine Learning Ray Regeneration
Machine Learning Frame Generation
As is quite obvious from the list above, FSR Redstone makes heavy use of machine learning algorithms to approximate image calculations, and sort of fill in the gaps for missing pixels. In particular, it seems to go neck to neck with Nvidia.
Nvidia’s DLSS 4 also makes heavy use of machine learning assisted approximation techniques, and AMD’s FSR Redstone is no different in this regard. Redstone is built with modern games in mind, which feature a lot of ray-traced reflections and shadows.
AMD might be on a winning streak here | Image Credits: AMD
Using all 3 mentioned keystones, AMD is able to reconstruct rays, and generate additional frames, which boost FPS dramatically. While frame generation wasn’t exactly a new concept for AMD, having access to ray reconstruction should tip the scales in its favor.
It should also be noted here that FSR Redstone’s frame generation is AI-assisted, meaning that it will likely have a similar equivalent to Nvidia’s MFF (multi-frame generation).
FSR Redstone vs DLSS: Which is better?
At this point, it is quite hard to say which is better. We barely have any concrete information surrounding Redstone, so it is too early to make a final call.
However, given how close AMD’s FSR 4 managed to get to DLSS, Redstone should bring quite a massive uplift in both performance and image quality – something which AMD has historically struggled with.
Another thing to keep in mind here is that AMD’s FSR 4 and Redstone are very likely going to be locked down to RDNA 4 GPUs, such as the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070 XT. This is largely thanks to the fact that these upscalers use machine learning, which must be hardware-accelerated.
As such, backporting the technology to RDNA 3 and older GPUs seems like a distant dream for now. Even if they do work, the performance would be quite terrible.

Former Israeli hostage grapples with celebrity
Former Israeli hostage grapples with celebrity
BOSTON (AP) — Three months after his release from ****** captivity, Omer Shem Tov stood on the pitcher’s mound at a Boston Red Sox game. Surrounded by supporters, he tossed out the first pitch, then raised his arms in celebration. His name flashed on the stadium billboard.
The moment was emblematic of the new-found — and for Shem Tov, unsought and at times unsettling — celebrity the 22-year-old has found since his release from 505 days of captivity in the Gaza Strip.
Before being taken hostage, Shem Tov had just finished military service, was working in a restaurant, having fun with friends and planning an overseas trip. Now, he’s in the public eye as he travels the globe campaigning for the release of the remaining 58 hostages — a third of whom are believed still alive.
Upon his arrival at Boston’s Logan International Airport Shem Tov was greeted by dozens of schoolchildren and their teachers — wearing “Boston Loves Omer” T-shirts — singing Israeli songs in Hebrew and dancing with him.
He toured Gillette Stadium, home of the NFL’s New England Patriots and Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution. He met with an Israeli player for the Revolution, and saw the Patriots’ six Super Bowl rings. Both teams are owned by entrepreneur Robert Kraft, whose foundation campaigns against antisemitism.
“I don’t like the word, but I’m famous,” Shem Tov acknowledged of the chance to throw out the first pitch at his very first baseball game ever, and the other firsts he’s had in Boston.
“I know that a lot of people, a big nation waited for me and a lot of people (fought) for me to come back home,” he said of the international campaign waged by hostage families since the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks, when 251 hostages were seized and about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed by ******-led militants.
More than 53,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive in Gaza, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Huge areas of Gaza have been destroyed and around 90% of its population displaced.
A return to normal, but also a sense of guilt
Shem Tov believes he is doing “something important” but said it “can be hard.” His return to normal life has not been without challenges. He still freezes when he hears the sound of a jet plane, and is wracked with guilt that things he now enjoys are beyond the reach of the remaining hostages.
“I get greeted in the street. People stop me and want selfies and stuff like this,” he said. “I support it and I will speak to anyone, anyone, anyone … because everyone wants to give out love.”
Still, little things like “going and grabbing a bite to eat, I feel it here,” Shem Tov said, clutching his throat. “It’s choking me that I know what they are going through. Maybe they don’t have food.”
“I remember taking the first bite of anything, it was heavenly,” he said. “I’m showering and I have guilt that they don’t take a shower.”
Shem Tov, who was attending the Tribe of Nova music festival in southern Israel the day of the attack, described trying to flee with friends Maya and Itay Regev in a car driven by Ori Danino, a stranger who took them in. Militants shot at the car, forced them out and dragged them into Gaza. The Regev siblings were released in a November 2023 ceasefire; Danino was later killed.
“I remember the festival itself, the freedom and happiness and us as youth having fun,” Shem Tov said.
“In seconds, life changed for us. My friends who were there with me, some got killed. Those who came back, they are not the same.”
Living in darkness
Shem Tov said he was initially held above ground with Itay Regev, shuttled between apartments in Gaza — wearing women’s cloths to hide their identities.
He was eventually moved to a cell 130 feet (40 meters) underground, where he was often in total darkness. He survived on little more than a biscuit daily, he said — dropping from around 176 pounds (80 kilograms) to 121 pounds (55 kilograms).
“There were times I thought, I’m blind. I have been starved. I have been spat on. I’ve been cursed. Difficult, difficult times,” Shem Tov said.
His faith got him through the worst, he said. He began daily conversations with God, offering a greeting and, over time, thanks for all he had — the “air in my lungs,” “the small amounts of food that I have” and that his family was safe.
Shem Tov said he initially wasn’t aware of the battle raging above him. But when he was moved to a tunnel closer to the surface, he could hear Israeli tanks rumbling above and bombs shaking the area.
At one point, he could hear Israeli soldiers’ voices through a ventilation unit.
“As much as I was glad to hear them, I was very, very scared for my life,” he said. “The captors that kept me in the tunnels told me as soon as the army or soldiers are heading here, we’ll shoot you.”
‘The first time I feel safe’
When he was released on Feb. 22 with five others as part of a ceasefire deal, video showed Shem Tov surrounded by masked, armed ****** fighters. Under duress, he was seen kissing the head of a ****** fighter and blowing kisses to the crowd. A van passed in front of the stage, he recalled, and a door opened revealing two hostages who were not being released.
He was handed over to the Red Cross and taken to an area controlled by the Israeli military. “I get out of the vehicle, I look around, I see the sky, the sun. The first time, I feel safe,” he said, adding that he asked an Israeli soldier if he could hug her.
“It’s the first time in forever I feel love and warmth,” he said.
Shem Tov was taken to meet his parents — his mother, Shelly Shem Tov, had kept his bedroom as he left it, with instructions that nobody should touch or clean it until he came home and did it himself.
“I see my mom and my dad and I run up to them, and I hug them,” Shem Tov said. “I waited for this moment for so long. I imagined it for so long. This is what I want every hostage to experience.”
Shem Tov has embraced the role of advocating for those still hostage — something his parents were already doing — telling anyone who listens they must be brought home.
“It’s really fulfilling. I love what I am doing but don’t like the cause,” he said. “I wish they were all here today. I hope it will be soon and in good circumstances.”
And while he is reluctant to talk politics, Shem Tov worries Israel’s latest offensive in Gaza puts the remaining hostages in danger.
“Every soldier for me is a hero,” he said. “But there is a big but. For me and the hostages, it’s difficult for us while the army is in the area. Places near us are being bombed. I support the army but we have to get them out.”
“If you keep on going with the military pressure, there is a big chance they will be killed.”
