  2. Mum shares desperation as police search for teen widens Mum shares desperation as police search for teen widens A missing teen’s mother has shared the heartbreaking toll of a week-long investigation into her daughter’s “suspicious” disappearance as police expand their search. Pheobe Bishop was last seen near Bundaberg airport in southern Queensland about 8.30am on May 15 after booking a trip to Western Australia. She has not been seen or heard from since, with CCTV footage indicating she never entered the airport. Police have expanded the search to “various locations” in **** **** and Bundaberg as they investigate what happened to the 17-year-old. More than a week after Phoebe’s disappearance, the uncertainty over her whereabouts is taking its toll on her heartbroken mother Kylie Johnson. “As another day starts, it’s getting harder to breathe and the numbness that we feel at the not knowing is eating at us,” Ms Johnson posted on Facebook on Friday. “We would do anything just to hear your voice, to have you curl up in my lap and hold you tight with your wild crazy hair in my face annoying my nose. “I have no words to describe what this is doing to our family, to our friends and to our community.” Ms Johnson has been pleading on social media for anyone with information to come forward since her daughter missed her flight and vanished on May 15. “What we need right now from everyone is to hold your loved ones tight and tell them you love them,” she posted on Friday. Other friends have written on Pheobe’s social media, praying that she is safe. “We all hope you’re okay Pheebs, come back,” one friend wrote on TikTok. “I hope you’re okay out there bby girl we are all so worried about you,” another posted. Officers have spent the past two days combing through a **** **** home, where Pheobe was living, as well as a grey Hyundai ix35. The vehicle is thought to have been used to take Pheobe to the airport and has been seized by police, who believe it belongs to a resident of the property. The property’s other residents have spoken to officers and are co-operating with police. “Currently, no one is in custody in relation to this investigation,” police said on Friday. Anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage of the vehicle – Queensland registration 414EW3 – near the airport or in the **** **** area on May 15 has been urged to come forward. Pheobe is about 180cm tall with a pale complexion, long hair that’s dyed red, and hazel eyes. 3. Chiquita fires thousands of striking banana workers in Panama, says it suffered $75 million losses Chiquita fires thousands of striking banana workers in Panama, says it suffered $75 million losses PANAMA CITY (AP) — Banana giant Chiquita Brands has fired its workers in Panama who have been out on strike for more than three weeks as part of nationwide protests against reforms to the social security system, the company said Thursday. Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino had said earlier Thursday that the strike was ******** and included some 5,000 workers. “Unfortunately, following the unjustified abandonment of work at our plantations and operations centers since April 28 and continuing today, (the company) has proceeded with the termination of all of our daily workers,” the company said in a statement. It said the company had suffered losses of at least $75 million. Mulino, speaking at his weekly press briefing Thursday morning, had blamed the leader of the banana workers union. “We don’t know how to talk to (union) leader Francisco Smith about the enormous damage his intransigence is causing the Bocas del Toro job sector,” Mulino said. Bocas del Toro is Panama’s westernmost province and borders Costa Rica. The union did not immediately comment. Protests marches and occasional roadblocks have stretched from one end of the country to the other as teachers, construction workers and other unions expressed their rejection to changes the government said were necessary to keep the social security system solvent. 5. Super Rugby Pacific: Western Force re-sign Wallabies fly-half Ben Donaldson for two years Super Rugby Pacific: Western Force re-sign Wallabies fly-half Ben Donaldson for two years Western Force fly-half and Wallabies five-eighth candidate Ben Donaldson has recommitted to the club, penning a new deal to take him through to the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The reigning Nathan Sharpe Medalist and former Waratah knocked back overseas offers to extend his stay out west after agreeing to a new two-year contract with the Force. Donaldson sits second in Super Rugby Pacific this season for both points scored (94) and goal-kicking conversion (76.5 per cent), trailing only All ******* star Damian McKenzie in both categories. Blessed with line-breaking ability, best-evidenced his his added-time walk-off try against Moana Pasifika in round one, Donaldson’s form has put him firmly in the frame for the Wallabies 10 jersey ahead of the British and Irish Lions tour. His decision to stay in Australia will also strengthen his case to start for the Wallabies at stand-off come the 2027 World Cup on home soil, with spots for overseas-based players likely to be limited. The 27-year-old played at the 2023 World Cup and has played 16 times for the Wallabies, including nine Tests last year under Joe Schmidt. Donaldson said he was excited to re-sign with his ‘Force family’ and had loved his time in WA. “We have a great culture, which given many of us aren’t originally from here, feels like our family in Perth and that makes us a close-knit unit,” he said. “This season has been disappointing for us, not achieving what we set out to achieve, but there’s been glimpses of what we can do and that all fuels the fire. “I had a few offers from overseas to weigh up, but I’m delighted to be staying in *********** rugby with the Lions tour later this year as well as the Bledisloe Cup in Perth. “There’s obviously also the lure of the home 2027 World Cup, which is extremely motivating. “I’d love to take the Force and *********** rugby to high levels and leave it in a better place.” Camera IconDonaldson won the 2024 Nathan Sharpe Medal. Credit: Paul Kane/Getty Images Force coach Simon Cron said Donaldson’s re-signing was an important step forward for the team. “He’s a leader in our group and a core member of driving the Western Force forward,” he said. “I know he’s disappointed, like I am, about some of the close games this year, but if we can keep the core playing group together, it’s going to hold us in great stead moving forward. “Most importantly, he’s an amazing human who continues to thrive in WA and we’re looking forward to helping him continue his journey both with us and the Wallabies.” Source link #Super #Rugby #Pacific #Western #Force #resign #Wallabies #flyhalf #Ben #Donaldson #years Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

The musician had been flying alongside music agent and pilot Dave Shapiro, who reportedly purchased the eight-seater jet in July of last year. Shapiro’s friend, music producer Ryan Bruce, shared a heartfelt tribute in the wake of the tragedy. “Dave changed mine and a lot of other people’s lives,” he told the Daily Mail. “The community he built and the network of bands he worked with and supported will never forget him. Daniel left us a lot of music to remember him by, and he was a super sweet guy.” Tributes For Daniel Williams Pour In The official social media account for the podcast show “State of the Scene” paid tribute to Williams, writing, “Heart goes out to Dave Shapiro and Daniel Williams’ family and friends. Simpson noted that the airport’s control tower was closed at the time of the ******, which is typical for airports of that size and does not necessarily indicate procedural error. Investigators are currently working to locate the aircraft’s ****** box and cockpit voice recorder, which could provide critical insight into the moments leading up to the ******. The NTSB team is expected to remain on site through Friday, with the aircraft recovery process scheduled for Saturday. A preliminary report on the incident will be released in the coming weeks, though Simpson cautioned that a final, comprehensive report could take up to 18 months to complete. 11. Western Force lock away another key Wallaby until 2027 Western Force lock away another key Wallaby until 2027 Star flyhalf Ben Donaldson says the lure of a home World Cup and achieving success with the Western Force convinced him to re-sign with Rugby Australia until the end of 2027. A day after try-scoring machine Carlo Tizzano re-signed with the Force and RA until the end of 2027, Donaldson also put pen to paper. Donaldson has shone across two seasons at the Force since moving west following the 2023 World Cup. He won the Force’s MVP Nathan Sharpe medal in 2024, and has enjoyed another strong campaign this year, including scoring an after-the-siren game-winning try against Moana Pasifika in round one. The 27-year-old has played 25 games for the Force, having previously represented the NSW Waratahs 38 times in Super Rugby after debuting in 2020. Donaldson played nine of the Wallabies’ 13 Tests last year, and has pulled on the gold jersey a total of 16 times so far in his international career. With rival playmaker Noah Lolesio taking his career off-shore, he looms as a key figure in the upcoming series against the British and Irish Lions, as well as for the 2027 home World Cup. “I’ve been here two years now and loved my time in WA,” Donaldson said. “We’ve got a great group of boys at the Force with the core having signed on for several more years, which is exciting about where we can go as a group. “I’m delighted to be staying in *********** rugby with the Lions Tour later year as well as a Bledisloe Cup here in Perth. “There’s obviously also the lure of the home 2027 World Cup, which is extremely motivating. “I’ve been part of the Wallabies squad in recent times and it’s a strong group with a good coaching unit, so hopefully I continue to be part of that moving forward with those big games and events to come.” Flanker Tizzano, who has scored a competition-high 12 tries this Super Rugby Pacific season, re-signed with the Force and RA on Thursday. The 25-year-old was being chased by cashed-up clubs in Japan, but was keen to maximise his representative chances by staying in Australia. GM recalls nearly 600,000 trucks, SUVs over risk of engine failure GM recalls nearly 600,000 trucks, SUVs over risk of engine failure General Motors is recalling 597,630 of its full-size U.S. trucks and SUVs because the vehicles’ V8 engines can fail during use, raising the risk of a ******. Manufacturing defects in the connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components “can lead to engine damage and engine failure,” according to documents posted Tuesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. No warning signs are listed. The recall comes amid an investigation by U.S. auto safety regulators following reports of engine failure in GM vehicles, including the company’s best-selling Silverado. The NHTSA in January said it was investigating an estimated 877,710 vehicles after receiving 39 complaints from users of GM vehicles equipped with L87 V8 engines. GM manufactures the L87 6-Liter V8 engine at its assembly sites in Tonawanda, New York; Spring Hill, Tennessee; and St. Catharines, Ontario. The recall includes the following V8-engine models: 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV;Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe;GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL Potential warning signs of imminent engine failure include unusual engine noises such as a knocking, or ******** sound; illumination of the “check engine” light; and performance issues such as unusually high RPMs, recall documents state. To fix the problem, dealers will inspect the engine for repair or replacement free of charge, GM states in the recall. Owner notification letters will be mailed June 9, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM’s number for this recall is N252494000. 14. Rookie John Pak shows Scheffler the way around Colonial Rookie John Pak shows Scheffler the way around Colonial Scottie Scheffler and John Pak enjoyed the same start to the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial with eagles on their respective first holes. The world No.1 couldn’t keep up with the PGA Tour rookie from there. Four days after winning his third major at the PGA Championship, Scheffler opened his attempt at three consecutive victories with a two-under 68 on Thursday. Pak shot a seven-under 63 for a three-shot lead over nine players, J.J. Spaun the highest-ranked among them at 27th. Tommy Fleetwood and 2023 British Open champion Brian Harman were among a group of nine players four back of Pak, and Scheffler headlined the 15 players who were five strokes behind. Defending champion Davis Riley, who is playing the first two rounds with Scheffler, had two double bogeys on the front nine and shot a three-over 73. Riley is coming off a runner-up finish to Scheffler at the PGA. The others at four under with Spaun are Patrick Rodgers, Ryo Hisatsune, Matti Schmid, Beau Hossler, Bud Cauley, J.T. Poston and Ben Griffin. Scheffler opened the second of what he considers his hometown events by holing a putt for eagle from off the green on the par-5 first hole and a 23-footer for birdie on No.2. The Dallas resident played the final 16 holes in one over, missing enough fairways and greens to prevent a run at Pak, who finished several hours earlier. Scheffler will have to come from behind this time, just as he did in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, where he faced the same first-round deficit before surging into the lead in the third round and repelling a Sunday charge from Jon Rahm. “On a day where I didn’t hit a lot of fairways on a golf course where you have to hit a lot of fairways, I posted a decent score,” Scheffler said. “Anything under par around here in these conditions isn’t a bad score. Obviously, I wish it was a little bit lower, but overall I feel decent about the position I’m in.” Starting on the par-4 10th, the 26-year-old Pak made quite the statement with his eagle on the 392-yard 10th hole. He was 147 yards away for his second shot and knocked the ball in the hole. “It was just like a perfect nine-iron,” Pak said of the shot. “The wind was off to the left, and I just tried to hit a 145-(foot) shot. I actually pushed it a little bit because I was aiming left of it, and it kind of just trickled in. “We didn’t really see it but saw a couple of guys behind the green throw their hands in the air. It was kind of nice to see that fall in.” Karl Vilips is the leading *********** at even par, while Cam Davis made a disastrous start with a six-over 76 to be close to the bottom of the field. 17. Bar & Bites: Perth journalist Simon James Bailey shares secrets of hosting the perfect dinner party Bar & Bites: Perth journalist Simon James Bailey shares secrets of hosting the perfect dinner party Former Perth TV reporter Simon James Bailey brings knowledge accumulated via hosting more than 500 dinner parties to the table in new SBS Food series Toast The Host, premiering in June. Shot in Cape Town, Bailey says the show “goes beyond cooking and teaches home cooks how to host a range of events at home with minimum stress and maximum enjoyment”. Toast The Host breaks down the daunting prospect of throwing a dinner party into bite-size pieces, from a simple garden lunch to a formal five-course dinner. Bar & Bites hit Bailey up for his top five tips for hosting a superb soiree. ROAD-TEST YOUR RECIPES “Some hosts make the mistake of trying a fancy recipe to wow their dinner guests but that is often a recipe for disaster,” Bailey says. “It’s better to serve food you have tried and tested plenty of times to avoid unwanted stress in the kitchen and running the risk of needing to order a pizza the salvage the situation.” Camera IconIn the first episode of new SBS food series, Simon James Bailey keeps things simple. Credit: Supplied PREPARATION IS KEY “Don’t leave everything to the day of the dinner party. Choose dishes you can cook in advance and set the table the day before to maximise the time you spend at the table with your guests.” TAKE TIME TO CHILLAX “The worst part of hosting a dinner party is the last-minute rush to get everything done before guests arrive,” he explains. “To save your sanity on the night, stop at least half an hour before your guests are due to arrive, sit down and have a cup of tea. You’ll be relaxed and ready to host a lovely evening.” CREATE A RUNNING ORDER “It pays to have an idea of how the evening will flow, from the moment your guests arrive and you offer them a drink to the time you serve cheese and dessert wine later in the evening,” Bailey says. “Don’t worry if the night doesn’t go exactly to plan, that often makes for a better dinner party.” Camera IconFormer Perth TV journalist Simon James Bailey hosts new SBS food series, Toast the Host. Credit: Supplied ACCEPT ASSISTANCE “You don’t have to do everything yourself on the night — you’re not running a small restaurant. If guests offer to help you clear plates or refresh wine and water let them, but I draw the line at them doing dishes.” TIPS FOR GUESTS The recipe for a great dinner party isn’t just up to the host. Guests should follow a few golden rules, according to Bailey. “Don’t arrive early, that will stress out the host,” he says, adding, “but don’t arrive more than 15 minutes late, you may disrupt their timing.” Never arrive empty-handed. Even if the host says not to bring anything, give them a gift — a bottle of wine, fancy condiment or chocolates. But Bailey says don’t bring flowers: “You’re creating work for your host at a crucial time of the evening.” Don’t worry if the night doesn’t go exactly to plan, that often makes for a better dinner party. Other tips for guests include not hovering in the kitchen, causing added stress for the host, and tasting the food before adding salt and pepper. “It’s rude to immediately season the meal,” he says. Finally, Bailey says dinner party guests should return the favour. “If you accept a dinner invitation you must be prepared to reciprocate within a month.” Toast The Host: How To Entertain At Home With Simon James Bailey premieres on June 7 on SBS Food and SBS On Demand. Iran says it may take ‘special measures’ to defend nuclear sites from Israel Iran says it may take ‘special measures’ to defend nuclear sites from Israel DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s top diplomat warned Thursday that his country would take “special measures” to defend its nuclear facilities if Israel continues to threaten them, raising the stakes further ahead of a new round of talks with the United States. The comments by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi offered no specifics on what Tehran would do, but international inspectors already have seen their access limited to Iran’s program. That’s even as Tehran enriches uranium to 60% purity, a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%. “I have called on the international community to take effective preventive measures against the continuation of Israeli threats, which if unchecked, will compel Iran to take special measures in defense of our nuclear facilities and materials,” Araghchi wrote on the social platform X after sending letters to United Nations officials. “The nature, content and extent of our actions will correspond and be proportionate to preventive measures taken by these international bodies in accordance with their statutory duties and obligations.” Iran’s mission to the United Nations later posted Araghchi’s letter online, which included a warning to the U.S. as well. “We are likewise of the firm conviction that — in the event of any attack against the nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran by the Zionist regime — the government of the United States shall bear legal responsibility, having been complicit therein,” the letter reads. It added any change involving Iranian nuclear sites would be communicated to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N.’s nuclear watchdog. Araghchi’s remarks follow a CNN report Tuesday that described the U.S. as having “new intelligence suggesting that Israel is making preparations to strike Iranian nuclear facilities.” Israel has not acknowledged any preparations, though officials up to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have repeatedly threatened to strike Iran’s nuclear sites to prevent it from being able to obtain a nuclear weapon, should it choose to pursue one. Israel and Iran have been archrivals in the ******** for decades. Araghchi’s warning come as the U.S. and Iran are due to meet Friday in Rome for their fifth round of negotiations over a possible deal that would see Tehran limit or end its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. The U.S. will be again represented in the talks by ******** envoy Steve Witkoff and Michael Anton, the State Department’s policy planning director. ___ Associated Press writer Nasser Karimi in Tehran, Iran, contributed to this report. 21. Conviction upheld for Collierville attorney who tried to kill his wife Conviction upheld for Collierville attorney who tried to kill his wife MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former Collierville attorney who was convicted of trying to kill his wife multiple times will stay in prison after his latest attempt at an early release was denied. The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office says that a judge ruled against former attorney Fred Wortman last week. Collierville attorney sentenced 30 years after entering best interest plea In 2015, Wortman was convicted of trying to kill his wife on three separate occasions. Wortman was accused of poisoning her toothpaste, hiring a hitman who turned out to be an undercover TBI agent, and paying an inmate to ******* her. Later that year, Wortman entered a “best interest” plea and was sentenced to 30 years in prison with 30% release eligibility. According to the DA’s Office, despite his plea deal, Wortman was granted an early parole hearing. Records from the Tennessee Department of Corrections show that at one point, his release eligibility date was January 2, 2018. Apology to family from attorney who tried to kill his wife The parole board ultimately denied Wortman’s release. The DA’s Office says Wortman then filed a motion for post-conviction relief, with his defense claiming that he “misunderstood the release terms.” His defense reportedly also claimed that the State violated the plea agreement by opposing parole. The DA’s Office says a judge denied the motion and has upheld Wortman’s conviction. TDOC records show that Wortman’s sentence is expected to end on August 26, 2040. Records also show that another parole hearing is scheduled for September 2026. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 25. Trump’s tax bill might only have short-term benefits Trump’s tax bill might only have short-term benefits Rep. Robert Scott (D-VA) (R) speaks during a mark up meeting with the House Budget Committee on Capitol Hill on May 16, 2025 in Washington, DC, U.S.. Anna Moneymaker | Getty Images News | Getty Images U.S President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax bill was passed by the House of Representatives Thursday and is headed to the Senate for approval. If the bill clears that hurdle and becomes law, it “reduces taxes for lots of people, it increases spending, especially on defense,” said Jed Ellerbroek, portfolio manager at Argent Capital Management, in an interview with CNBC. Simply put, it will boost the economy in the short term, Ellerbroek added. Further into the future, however, the bill will likely saddle America with a higher fiscal deficit. Tax cuts mean lower revenue, while increased spending on defense means more money flows out of government coffers. It’s a matter of simple arithmetic: less income and more expenses. Even though yields on U.S. Treasurys, which are essentially government debt, have moderated slightly from their Wednesday spike, they’re still at elevated levels compared with earlier in the year. This suggests investors are not as certain about lending money to the White House, and hence are demanding more safety in the form of higher yields. Over in the stock market, investors are taking a wait-and-see approach, with both the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average remaining mostly unchanged after Trump’s bill was passed. There’s at least one piece of good news from Thursday. The U.S. Supreme Court strongly suggested that Federal Reserve members might have protections from being dismissed by a president, lowering the risk of another Trump administration-induced market meltdown. What you need to know today U.S. stocks mostly unchangedOn Thursday, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed mostly flat, while the Nasdaq Composite added 0.28%, as the U.S. House of Representatives passed Trump’s tax bill. Europe’s regional Stoxx 600 index slipped 0.64%. The British government’s long-term borrowing costs grew higher, with the 30-year gilt yield closing at 5.563%, its highest level since 1998. Treasury yields eased slightlyOvernight stateside, the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield dipped to 5.044% after touching 5.161% — the highest since October 2023 — and the 10-year yield fell to 4.535%, dropping nearly 10 basis points from earlier in the day. The sell-off in Treasurys is prompting some market watchers to rethink the status of American government bonds as a safe haven and rotate their money to other global assets. Fed members might have protection from dismissalThe U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday strongly suggested that Federal Reserve board members would have special protection against being fired by a president. “The Federal Reserve is a uniquely structured, quasi-private entity that follows in the distinct historical tradition of the First and Second Banks of the United States,” the majority ruling said in a court case on Trump’s firing of federal agency members. Anthropic launches new AI modelsAnthropic, the Amazon-backed OpenAI rival, on Thursday launched Claude 4, its latest artificial intelligence models. The company said in a release that the two models, called Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4, are defining a “new standard” when it comes to AI agents. Claude Opus 4 is the “best coding model in the world” and can autonomously work for nearly a full seven-hour corporate workday, according to Anthropic. [PRO] A warning sign from the equity marketMarkets stabilized Thursday after the dual sell-off in stocks and bonds, but a key corner of the equity market is blinking a caution light on the economy, wrote CNBC PRO’s Jesse Pound. While it doesn’t show that a recession is imminent, it’s a reminder that the path forward is still rocky. And finally… Workers assemble electronic devices in China in 2016. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Why Make-in-India isn’t a guaranteed success despite U.S. tariffs on China While India has certainly emerged as a significant, albeit nascent, hub for electronics assembly, the path to it becoming a clear-cut alternative to China isn’t a guaranteed outcome, despite U.S. tariffs on ******** goods. “Supply chain and manufacturing, these things take a long time to establish,” said Nick McConway, head of Asia ex-Japan equity at Amundi Asset Management. “We saw that with Vietnam, who had to put huge investment into infrastructure.” “I think India is only at the very early stage of developing these types of globally facing manufacturing capacities,” McConway added. The fund manager also highlighted that while labor costs can be low in India, it doesn’t mean savings for companies moving their manufacturing base to India.
