Joel cancels concerts after brain disorder diagnosis Joel cancels concerts after brain disorder diagnosis US singer-songwriter and pianist Billy Joel says he is cancelling all his scheduled concerts after he was recently diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain disorder. The 76-year-old singer is undergoing physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing while he recovers, according to a statement on social media. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” Joel said. Joel’s condition was exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance, according to the statement. The condition, which is more likely in people over the age of 65, occurs when fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Its symptoms resemble those of dementia and can sometimes be reversible. The tour, which had stops in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, had been due to start in February but that was rescheduled to July due to an undisclosed medical condition. Joel, known for hits like Piano Man and Uptown Girl, ended his record-breaking monthly Madison Square Garden residency – which had begun in 2014 – last year. Palantir CEO Alex Karp sells more than $50 million in stock Palantir CEO Alex Karp sells more than $50 million in stock Palantir co-founder and CEO Alex Karp speaks during the Hill & Valley Forum at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center Auditorium in Washington, D.C., on April 30, 2025. Brendan Smialowski | Afp | Getty Images Palantir CEO Alex Karp has sold more than $50 million worth of shares in the artificial intelligence software company, according to securities filings. The stock transactions occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday between $125.26 and $127.70 per share. Following the stock sales, Karp owned about 6.43 million shares of Palantir stock, worth about $787 million based on Thursday’s closing price. The sales were connected to a series of automatic share sales to cover required tax withholding obligations tied to vesting restricted stock units, according to filings. Other top executives at the Denver-based company also unloaded stock. Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar sold about $21 million worth of Palantir stock, while co-founder and president Stephen Cohen dumped about $43.5 million in shares. Palantir shares have notched fresh highs in recent weeks as the company leapt above Salesforce in market value and into the top 10 most valuable U.S. tech firms. The digital analytics company has benefited from bets on AI and a surge in government contracts as companies prioritize streamlining and President Donald Trump targets a federal overhaul with the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency. The stock has outperformed its tech peers since the start of 2025, surging nearly 62%, but investors are paying a high multiple on shares. In its earnings report earlier this month, the company lifted its full-year guidance due to AI adoption, but shares fell on international growth concerns. “You don’t have to buy our shares,” Karp told CNBC as shares slumped. “We’re happy. We’re going to partner with the world’s best people and we’re going to dominate. You can be along for the ride or you don’t have to be.” Don’t miss these insights from CNBC PRO Source link #Palantir #CEO #Alex #Karp #sells #million #stock Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Russia and Ukraine each free 390 prisoners in swap Russia and Ukraine each free 390 prisoners in swap Russia and Ukraine have each released 390 prisoners and say they will free more in the coming days, in what is expected to be the biggest prisoner swap of the war so far. The agreement to exchange 1000 prisoners each was the only concrete step towards peace to emerge last week from the first direct talks between the warring sides in more than three years, when they failed to agree a ceasefire. Both sides said they had each released 270 soldiers and 120 civilians on Friday, with more due to be released on Saturday and Sunday. The freed Russians are currently in Belarus, which neighbours Ukraine, receiving psychological and medical assistance before being moved to Russia for further care, the Russian Defence Ministry said. They include civilians captured inside Russia’s Kursk region during a Ukrainian incursion. “Today, almost 400 people are home,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a televised address that confirmed the plan for both sides to release 1000 in the coming days. “We will definitely return everyone. Every one of our citizens.” The released Ukrainians arrived at a hospital in the northern Chernihiv region in buses and filed out, pale, most of them with shaven heads and wrapped in Ukrainian flags. Referring to the prisoner swap earlier on Friday, US President Donald Trump, who had pressed the sides to meet last week, wrote on Truth Social: “Congratulations to both sides on this negotiation. This could lead to something big???” Hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides are believed to have been wounded or killed in the war, although neither side publishes accurate casualty figures. We are bringing our people home. The first stage of the “1000-for-1000” exchange agreement has been carried out. This agreement was reached during the meeting in Türkiye, and it is crucial to implement it in full.Today – 390 people. Ukraine says it is ready for a 30-day ceasefire immediately. Russia, which launched the war by invading its neighbour in 2022 and occupies about a fifth of Ukraine, says it will not pause its assaults until conditions are met first. A member of the Ukrainian delegation called those conditions “non-starters”. Defence Minister Rustem Umerov told reporters at a hospital that the swap was “the first stage” and that Ukraine still hoped to secure a ceasefire. “Ukraine wants the ceasefire. And we hope that the US will support Ukraine in achieving the ceasefire,” he said. Russia says it is ready for talks while the fighting goes on, and wants to discuss what it calls the war’s “root causes,” including its demands Ukraine cede more territory, and be disarmed and barred from the NATO military alliance. Ukraine says that is tantamount to surrender and would leave it defenceless in the face of future Russian attacks. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday his country would hand Ukraine a draft document outlining its conditions for a long-term peace agreement once the current prisoner exchange is completed. Goldman says these stocks will benefit from some provisions in tax bill Goldman says these stocks will benefit from some provisions in tax bill Goldman Sachs is eyeing a handful of stocks that the firm thinks can be winners as a result of details in President Donald Trump’s tax bill. Trump’s plan, which just made it through the House of Representatives, extends the tax cuts from his first term that are set to expire in December but also contains new elements, like a temporary end to taxes on tips as well as $25 billion for his ” Golden Dome ” missile defense system. Economists argue that the bill will add trillions of dollars to the ballooning national debt , helping to spur a sharp rise in U.S. Treasury yields . The bill still faces an arduous path to approval in the Senate, where some Republicans want steep cuts to Medicaid as part of an agreement to support the legislation. The bill already includes what would be the largest ever cut to food stamps in the history of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). But other provisions in the bill, if they remain in place, could prove a boon for some small cap stocks, according to Goldman Sachs analysts led by analyst Deep Mehta, citing an analysis of the legislation by Goldman political economist Alec Phillips. Some of the potential tailwinds include “full expensing of domestic factories,” reinstating or extending earlier provisions in the 2017 tax law that allowed companies to fully expense capital spending on equipment and more generous deductibility of interest expenses. Goldman argues that small cap companies with high capital spending stand to benefit the most. “As we have noted before, small-caps tend to be more sensitive to tax policies given their higher domestic exposure, leverage levels, and tax rates,” Mehta wrote in a Wednesday note. Here’s a look at some of the small cap stocks that closely match up with several aspects of the proposed Congressional legislation described by Goldman. Stock in natural gas compression company Kodiak Gas Services was down 16% in 2025 through Thursday. About 90% of analysts polled by FactSet rate the stock a buy, with the Street’s consensus price target implying 30% upside. “[We expect a] solid demand outlook for compression services in U.S. shale oil fields with Permian production growth proving to be more resilient than expected,” Goldman analyst John Mackay wrote. He forecast stable capital spending for Kodiak, alongside better profit margins, which he said should support both free cash flow and the flexibility to buy back stock. KGS YTD mountain Kodiak Gas Services stock in 2025. Other possible beneficiaries include Shake Shack , whose shares through Thursday have fallen almost 10% so far in 2025. Analysts are pretty evenly divided on the burger chain, however, with 52% surveyed by FactSet rating it the equivalent of a buy. Other stocks on the Goldman screen of tax bill beneficiaries included home furnishing retailer RH , formerly Restoration Hardware, and automotive maintainence supplier Valvoline . Target CEO sounds alarm on customer behavior Target CEO sounds alarm on customer behavior Target (TGT) continues to feel the impact of several consumer frustrations, which recently contributed to weaker sales. Amid this startling trend, the retailer has conjured up a plan to win back customers. In Target’s first-quarter earnings report for 2025, it revealed that while its comparable digital sales increased by 4.7% year-over-year, its comparable store sales decreased by 3.8%. Don’t miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet’s free daily newsletter Specifically, the number of transactions in stores dipped by 2.4%, while the average amount of money customers spent per transaction declined by roughly 1.4%. Related: Target CEO admits a major mistake amid boycotts from customers The decrease in sales comes during a time when Target faces backlash and boycotts from consumers over its decision in January to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. This includes withdrawing its participation in the Human Rights Campaign survey, which tracks LGBTQ+ corporate policies and practices. Target also discontinued its three-year DEI goals and concluded its Racial Equity Action and Change initiatives, which involved advancing the careers of ****** employees, implementing anti-racism training for team members, promoting ******-owned businesses, sourcing products from ****** suppliers, and more. After this decision was announced, Target’s foot traffic in stores started to suffer. According to a recent report from Placer.ai, Target’s visits during the first few months of 2025 fell by 4.1% year-over-year, and visits per location were down by 4.8%. Targets has acknowledged it’s operating in a challenging environment that has impacted sales.Image source: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images During an earnings call on May 21, Target CEO Brian Cornell said that the company is “not satisfied” with its recent performance and emphasized that it is operating in an “exceptionally challenging environment” that has impacted foot traffic and sales. He said several challenges had a negative impact on business, including inflation, tariffs, and Target’s recent decision to cut back DEI. “For several years now, we’ve seen pressure in our discretionary businesses, as spending adjusted down from elevated levels during the pandemic and then moved further away in the face of historically high inflation in needs-based categories,” said Cornell. “On top of those ongoing challenges, we faced several additional headwinds this quarter, including five consecutive months of declining consumer confidence, uncertainty regarding the impact of potential tariffs, and the reaction to the updates we shared on Belonging in January.” Related: Walmart CEO has a harsh warning for customers In order to combat these pressures, Cornell said Target will open a new Enterprise Acceleration Office to simplify how it operates. The company will also make several organizational changes to “bring even more clarity and speed” to how it conducts business and advances its strategy. Story Continues In addition, Target will work hard to prevent potential price increases in its stores that may stem from tariffs, which are taxes companies pay to import goods from overseas. Recently, President Donald Trump imposed a 10% baseline tariff on all countries and paused reciprocal tariffs. When the pause on reciprocal tariffs ends in July, roughly 60 countries will soon see higher tariff rates. This move has caused increased anxiety among consumers who are worried about paying higher prices for goods. More Retail: During the call, Cornell said that Target has been working “tirelessly” to mitigate the impact of tariffs, and the difficulty level is “incredibly high” due to the magnitude of Trump’s tariff rates. “As a company that aims to deliver great products and outstanding value, we’re focused on supporting American families as they manage their budgets,” said Cornell. “We have many levers to use in mitigating the impact of tariffs, and price is the very last resort.” Some of the efforts Target is taking to minimize the threat of tariffs include negotiating with vendor partners, reevaluating assortment decisions, changing country of production, tweaking order timing, and even adjusting prices where necessary. Yakuza 0 voice cast says new Director’s Cut scenes give a sense of closure Yakuza 0 voice cast says new Director’s Cut scenes give a sense of closure The original Japanese voice cast for Yakuza 0 have shared their opinions on the new scenes added to the upcoming Director’s Cut. Yazkua 0: Director’s Cut will be released on Switch 2 on the console’s launch day on June 5, and will feature around 26 minutes of new cutscenes. The official YouTube channel for developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has published a video with the game’s original Japanese voice cast, who returned to voice the new scenes. As translated by Automaton, Kazuma Kiryu’s voice actor Takaya Kuroda said he felt the plot for Yakuza 0 had some loose ends that he and fans of the series were curious about. Kuroda said that when he received the script for the new Director’s Cut scenes he though they were “refreshing”, and that fans will agree they bring a sense of closure to some of those loose ends. Hidenari Ugaki, who voices Goro Majima, added that the new scenes featuring his character make it clearer that although he has a ‘scary’ appearance he’s kind-hearted on the inside. According to Ugaki, the new scenes make it clearer “how dearly Majima holds Makoto and how much he wants to protect her”. Finally, Hitoshi ******, who voices Daisaku Kuze, said there are new scenes which help to better explain the relationship between Kuze and Kiryu, giving more depth to things the original game briefly mentioned but didn’t discuss in more detail. “Kuze’s new lines gave me a sense of ‘oh, so that’s how things are between them’,” ****** explained. The Director’s Cut version of Yakuza 0, which will be exclusive to Switch 2 and is released on the console’s launch date of June 5, features new, never-before-seen cutscenes along with a new English dub (the original game only had a Japanese dub with English subtitles. It also includes a new Red Light Raid online four-player mode with up to 60 playable characters. Although Yakuza 0 was the sixth main entry in the Yakuza / Like a Dragon game to be released, it’s set chronologically before any other game in the series. As such, while the original Yakuza is technically the starting point for anyone new to the series, some fans recommend that newcomers start with Yakuza 0 first because it’s the first game in the timeline. Intuit shares pop 9% on earnings beat, rosy guidance Intuit shares pop 9% on earnings beat, rosy guidance Shares of Intuit popped about 9% on Friday, a day after the company reported quarterly results that beat analysts’ estimates and issued rosy guidance for the full year. Intuit, which is best known for its TurboTax and QuickBooks software, said revenue in the fiscal third quarter increased 15% to $7.8 billion. Net income rose 18% to $2.82 billion, or $10.02 per share, from $2.39 billion, or $8.42 per share, a year earlier. “This is the fastest organic growth that we have had in over a decade,” Intuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi told CNBC’s “Closing Bell: Overtime” on Thursday. “It’s really incredible growth across the platform.” For its full fiscal year, Intuit said it expects to report revenue of $18.72 billion to $18.76 billion, up from the range of $18.16 billion to $18.35 billion it shared last quarter. Analysts were expecting $18.35 billion, according to LSEG. “We’re redefining what’s possible with [artificial intelligence] by becoming a one-stop shop of AI-agents and AI-enabled human experts to fuel the success of consumers and small and mid-market businesses,” Goodarzi said in a release Thursday. Goldman Sachs analysts reiterated their buy rating on the stock and raised their price target to $860 from $750 on Thursday. The analysts said Intuit’s execution across its core growth pillars is “reinforcing confidence” in its growth profile over the long term. The company’s artificial intelligence roadmap, which includes the introduction of AI agents, will add additional upside, the analysts added. “In our view, Intuit stands out as a rare asset straddling both consumer and business ecosystems, all while supplemented by AI-prioritization,” the Goldman Sachs analysts wrote in a note. Analysts at Deutsche Bank also reiterated their buy rating on the stock and raised their price target to $815 from $750. They said the company’s results were “reassuring” after a rocky two years and that they feel more confident about its ability to grow the consumer business. “Longer term, we continue to believe Intuit presents a unique investment opportunity and we see its platform approach powering accelerated innovation with leverage, thus enabling sustained mid-teens or better EPS growth,” the analysts wrote in a Friday note. Geneva Open: Novak Djokovic beats Cameron Norrie to reach final and close in on 100th title Geneva Open: Novak Djokovic beats Cameron Norrie to reach final and close in on 100th title Novak Djokovic moved one win away from his 100th ATP Tour-level singles title with a hard-fought victory against Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the semi-finals at the Geneva Open. Djokovic, who celebrated his 38th birthday on Thursday, is bidding to become just the third man in the Open era – after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer – to win 100 ATP titles. The 24-time Grand Slam champion took a step closer to that milestone with a resilient 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-1 win over Norrie. Djokovic, who has not won a title since claiming Olympic gold in Paris last summer, will face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in Saturday’s final. “It was the toughest match of tournament for me so far, for sure,” the world number six said in his on-court interview. Playing in his first semi-final of the season, Norrie won just two points on Djokovic’s serve in the first set as the Serb raced through the opener. It was the Briton, however, who took control in the second set, challenging Djokovic’s serve for the first time to move 4-1 in front. A double fault by Djokovic at 5-2 brought up a set point for Norrie, but he missed his chance and allowed Djokovic to break back and level the set at 5-5. The world number 90 redeemed himself in a cagey tie-break, saving a match point before an unforced error from Djokovic took the last-four tie to a deciding set. Djokovic reasserted his dominance by grabbing the first three games of the third set – a gap that Norrie was unable to close as he was broken again to allow Djokovic to serve out the victory after two hours and 15 minutes. “I’m really glad how I regrouped in the third and played the best set of the tournament,” added Djokovic, who is playing in his first event since splitting from coach Andy Murray. “It means a lot [to reach the final]. So let’s go for a title.” It has been a disappointing clay-court season for Djokovic, who suffered immediate exits in Madrid and Monte Carlo. However, an ATP 250 title in Geneva could be the perfect confidence booster before the French Open, where he will be chasing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title. Djokovic will face American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round at Roland Garros, which starts on Sunday. Pokemon Video Games Are Closing In On Half A Billion Sales Pokemon Video Games Are Closing In On Half A Billion Sales Next year, Pokemon will celebrate its 30th anniversary, but The Pokemon Company didn’t wait to find a reason to celebrate now. In the 29 years since the franchise’s debut, almost 500 million copies of Pokemon video games have been sold. According to The Pokemon Company, the sales total across all platforms is 489 million through the end of March 2025. No further breakdown was included that displayed which Pokemon titles sold the most, but it did include a notice that the games are available in nine languages. When it comes to the trading card game, Pokemon’s success is even more impressive. 75 billion Pokemon cards have been sold since 1996. There’s no way the Pokemon video game sales can match that number any time soon. But the title most likely to carry the games over 500 million is Pokemon Legends Z-A, which recently unveiled a few of its starter Pokeman ahead of its launch on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 later this year. Pokemon has become so pervasive in our culture that we’re barely surprised anymore when someone gets arrested with a stolen Pokemon card worth over $300,000. In this week alone, it was announced that all 140 Episodes of Pokemon the Series: XY are coming to Netflix next month. In other Pokemon-related news, Pokemon TCG Pocket’s next expansion launches on May 29. Hikers Discover Porsche Panamera Mysteriously Blocking Trail in the Middle of the Woods Hikers Discover Porsche Panamera Mysteriously Blocking Trail in the Middle of the Woods The 21st Century’s addition of sedans, station wagons and SUVs to the Porsche lineup have made the cars from Zuffenhausen far more omnipresent than they were back in the days when the company only made two-door speed machines. Still, there are some places where it remains surprising to see one — like, for example, abandoned in the middle of the woods, blocking a hiking trail. Last Monday, a Facebook user named Kayley Clare posted on the Roxborough Rants & Raves Facebook page a picture of a blue Porsche Panamera in the middle of a woody trail in Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Valley Park. With that post, the questions — and theories — began to pour in. Was someone trying to hide the car from the repo man? Was it stolen? Was it used in a crime and dumped there? The Philadelphia Inquirer began to investigate, and discovered that despite the bizarre scene, nothing nefarious was going on. According to their reporting, the Panamera’s 84-year-old driver made a series of wrong turns on Sunday night and wound up driving roughly a mile deep into the park, ending up on the Orange Trail before stopping and calling for help. Porsche Obviously, the man made a big mistake. However, we can’t help but be a little bit impressed. According to the Friends of the Wissahickon website, the Orange Trail has an average width of just three feet and a maximum obstacle height of 24 inches. The trail has an 11% grade and is made up of dirt and rock. The car, meanwhile, appears to be a 971-generation Panamera — a capable car for sure, but not the sort of vehicle you’d usually associate with off-roading of any sort, let alone the kind where many Land Rover drivers would hesitate to tread. The car was pulled off the trail on Tuesday, and a video of the rescue was shared on The Philadelphia Inquirer’s social media channels In the clip, an ATV uses a winch to help pull the car along the trail, giving a sense of just how narrow the path is. The driver is extremely embarrassed over the whole situation, according to the Inquirer. But thankfully, no injuries were reported, and no crime was committed. Now if you’ll excuse us, this incident has us daydreaming about a 911 Dakar-style Panamera build… You Might Also Like Source link #Hikers #Discover #Porsche #Panamera #Mysteriously #Blocking #Trail #Middle #Woods Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

What Medicaid, SNAP cuts in House Republican bill mean for benefits What Medicaid, SNAP cuts in House Republican bill mean for benefits A “Save Medicaid” sign is affixed to the podium for the House Democrats’ press event to oppose the Republicans’ budget on the House steps of the Capitol on Tuesday, February 25, 2024. Bill Clark | Cq-roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images The multitrillion-dollar tax and spending package passed by the House of Representatives on Thursday includes historic spending cuts to Medicaid health coverage and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Now, it is up to the Senate to consider the changes — and to perhaps propose its own. As it stands, the legislation — called the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” — would slash Medicaid spending by roughly $700 billion and SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, by about $300 billion. “Bottom line is, a lot of people will lose benefits, including people who are entitled to these benefits and who are not the target population of this bill,” said Jennifer Wagner, director of Medicaid eligibility enrollment at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. More from Personal Finance: How the House Republican tax bill favors the rich Tax bill includes $1,000 baby bonus in ‘Trump Accounts’ Food stamps face ‘biggest cut in the program’s history’ The cuts to Medicaid and SNAP — the largest in the programs’ histories — come as the reconciliation bill would add roughly $3 trillion to the nation’s debt including interest over the next decade, estimates the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. To help pay for a variety of tax perks included in the bill, House Republicans have targeted Medicaid and SNAP for savings. “We don’t want any waste, fraud or abuse,” President Donald Trump said Tuesday on Newsmax when asked about prospective Medicaid changes. “Other than that, we’re leaving it.” Likewise, some Republican leaders have pointed to rooting out abuse of SNAP benefits. One way House Republicans are seeking to curb the programs’ spending is through new work requirements. New Medicaid work requirements to get earlier date Under the House proposal, new Medicaid work requirements will apply to people who are covered through the Affordable Care Act expansion. To be eligible, those individuals will need to participate in qualifying activities for at least 80 hours per month unless they can prove they have an approved exemption, according to Jennifer Tolbert, deputy director of KFF’s Program on Medicaid and the Uninsured. In last-minute negotiations, House Republicans moved the date for implementing those work requirements to no later than Dec. 31, 2026, up from a previously proposed effective date of Jan. 1, 2029 — around two years earlier than the original version, CBPP’s Wagner noted. Notably, it also gives states permission to start implementing the work requirements earlier than that date. “On the Medicaid side, the work requirement is arguably the harshest provision,” Wagner said. “It will lead to the greatest cuts of enrollment in Medicaid.” The new accelerated timeline also doesn’t allow time for rulemaking, a process by which the public can submit comments, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services may respond to those submissions, Wagner noted. Instead, the legislative proposal calls for guidance to be issued by the end of 2025, which she said is a “big deal” because it eliminates the opportunity for adjustments to be made in response to public comments. Moving up the effective date also limits the ability to conduct public outreach to notify individuals of the coming changes, said Tolbert of KFF. States will also have less time to adjust their systems to track whether individuals are working the required number of hours or engaging in other necessary activities, she said. Within the work requirements, the House also moved to limit the discretion to determine other medical conditions that may make someone exempt that had been in the original version, Wagner said. Notably, the proposal also calls for states to conduct more frequent eligibility redeterminations for adults who are eligible for Medicaid through Affordable Care Act expansions. Starting Dec. 31, 2026, states will be required to conduct redeterminations every six months, compared to current requirements that require eligibility reviews within 12 months of changes in a beneficiary’s circumstances, according to KFF. The increased frequency of the redeterminations are “likely to have a big impact,” Tolbert said. Ultimately, the work requirements may make it difficult for people to access the health coverage they need, she said. “What this may end up doing is having the opposite of the intended effect,” Tolbert said. “They may lose access to the very treatments and services that are enabling them to work.” SNAP work requirements would be expanded Under the House Republican bill, work requirements would also be expanded for SNAP benefits. Individuals ages 18 to 54 who have no dependents and are able to work are already face SNAP benefit limitations based on 80-hour per month work requirements. The proposal would extend those requirements to individuals ages 55 to 64, as well as households with children, unless they are under age seven. In addition, states would also be limited in the flexibility they may provide with waivers of the work requirements or discretionary exemptions, according to the Urban Institute. In addition, federal funding cuts would make it so states would have to contribute more toward benefits and administration of the program. Ultimately, those changes could take away food assistance for millions, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Apple’s iPhones will face 25% tariff if made outside U.S.
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Apple’s iPhones will face 25% tariff if made outside U.S. Apple’s iPhones will face 25% tariff if made outside U.S. Apple CEO Tim Cook, left, and President Donald Trump speak to the press during a tour of the Flextronics computer manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, where Apple’s Mac Pros are assembled, Nov. 20, 2019. Mandel Ngan | AFP | Getty Images President Donald Trump said in a social media post Friday that Apple will have to pay a tariff of 25% or more for iPhones made outside the United States. “I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else. If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S.,” Trump said on Truth Social. Shares of Apple fell about 2% on Friday after the post. Apple’s flagship phone is produced primarily in China, but the company has been shifting manufacturing to India in part because that country has a friendlier trade relationship with the U.S. Some Wall Street analysts have estimated that moving iPhone production to the U.S. would raise the price of the Apple smartphone by at least 25%. Wedbush’s Dan Ives put the estimated cost of a U.S. iPhone at $3,500. The iPhone 16 Pro currently retails for about $1,000. This is the latest jab at Apple from Trump, who over the past couple of weeks has ramped up pressure on the company and Cook to increase domestic manufacturing. Trump and Cook met at the White House on Tuesday, according to Politico. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview with Fox News on Friday that he was not part of the meeting at the White House but that the Apple situation could be part of the Trump administration’s push to bring “precision manufacturing” back to the U.S. “A large part of Apple’s components are in semiconductors. So we would like to have Apple help us make the semiconductor supply chain more secure,” Bessent said. Cook gave $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund and attended the inauguration in January. Apple has announced a $500 billion spend on U.S. development, including AI server production in Houston. Apple declined to comment for this story. The company said during its May 1 earnings report that it expects about $900 million in additional costs for tariffs in the current quarter. Cook said on the company’s earnings call that the tariff outlook was “very difficult to predict” past June. Foxconn, one of Apple’s main iPhone assembly partners, is spending $1.5 billion on expanding its India facilities, the Financial Times reported Thursday. Trump has publicly criticized other major U.S. companies, including Walmart, during his trade war push, but the levies on a specific consumer product is a new step. The exact legal mechanism for the tariff is unclear. Trump followed up his post about Apple with another one calling for a 50% tariff on products from the European Union. Taken together, the posts point to trade tensions increasing again after the U.S. had temporarily lowered many of its levies, including in an agreement with China. Apple also had to navigate tariff threats during Trump’s first term, when a 15% tariff on ******** imports was being considered in 2019. At that time, Cook had a strong relationship with Trump and the final trade deal excluded core Apple products from the duties. As Apple is caught in the U.S. president’s crosshairs, the company is also seeing weak demand in China. On Friday the company hiked trade-in incentives for iPhones in China. While Switch 2 Goes NVIDIA, Xbox Handheld Has Reportedly Chosen a Custom AMD APU While Switch 2 Goes NVIDIA, Xbox Handheld Has Reportedly Chosen a Custom AMD APU Xbox has been making some big moves in the industry recently. Their decision to port their once exclusive titles to the PC, along with direct competitors such as PlayStation and Nintendo, has thrown the industry into a storm whose final effects are yet to unfold. Xbox has also been eyeing the handheld market for quite some time now and has explicitly mentioned the presence of an ‘Xbox handheld’ gaming PC. This PC will very likely compete with the Steam Deck and other options such as the ROG Ally. Recent leaks seem to point to an AMD-based system now. The new Xbox handheld reportedly uses a ‘low-power’ AMD APU The new Xbox handheld reportedly uses a custom AMD APU, which is also expected to be low-power. This information was leaked by multiple users online, and detailed that AMD is working with Xbox in a direct collaboration to produce the heart and brains of the upcoming handheld. Xbox is making a handheld | Image Credits: Xbox KeplerL2 first revealed this on the NeoGAF forums. Apparently, the Xbox handheld will use a low-power AMD chip, much like the one that is present on the Steam Deck. For the uninitiated, Valve’s Steam Deck uses a custom AMD APU, which has a rated TDP of 15 W. The Xbox handheld is also expected to follow suit and be somewhere between 10-15 W. Other details surrounding the APU, including its capabilities and generation, are still unknown as of the time of writing this article. However, given that it is a relatively newer product, expect it to be based on the RDNA 4 or RDNA 3.5 architecture. This should, in theory, give it a competitive edge over Valve’s console, as Valve’s APU is based on the much older RDNA 2. The handheld is expected to be revealed sometime later this year and is likely to feature ASUS as a partner. However, given that it is very likely to be less powerful than the Ryzen Z1 Extreme present on the ROG Ally, it does beg the question of why one would want to choose an Xbox handheld in the first place. Comparing the Nintendo Switch 2 to the Xbox handheld Unlike the upcoming Xbox device, the Nintendo Switch 2 makes use of Nvidia tech to power its systems. In particular, the Switch 2 uses a custom Nvidia Tegra T239 processor, which is also based on ARM. In contrast, the Xbox handheld is expected to run on x86, which is AMD hardware. As such, it is not possible to directly compare the two handhelds. This is also largely thanks to the fact that we are yet to receive retail units for either console, and everything here is based on assumptions. That’s as far as the APU is concerned. Externally, both consoles are expected to look quite different as well. The Nintendo Switch 2 retains its detachable Joy-Cons, while Xbox will likely maintain a traditional design, much like the ROG Ally. The Xbox handheld should, in theory, be a tad bit faster than the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2, going by leaks. However, the difference is likely to be minuscule, and there is more to a console than just specs alone. British woman held in Sri Lanka on drug offences British woman held in Sri Lanka on drug offences A British woman has been arrested in Sri Lanka after police allegedly found 101lbs (46kg) of the synthetic drug kush in her suitcase. Custom officers posed for pictures with bags of drugs they accuse Charlotte May Lee, 21, from south London, of attempting to smuggle into the country earlier this month. The former flight attendant denies knowing there were drugs in her suitcase and says she believes they were planted there. Ms Lee is being held in a prison north of the south Asian country’s capital, Colombo, and is contact with her family, her lawyer told the BBC. She could face up to 25 years in prison if found guilty. Her legal representative, Sampath Perera, told the BBC his team was visiting her daily in prison in the city of Negombo, to provide support and monitor her wellbeing. A senior officer in the Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit said the seizure at Colombo’s Bandaranaike Airport on 5 May was the biggest in its history. Ms Lee told Mail Online on Wednesday: “I had never seen them [the drugs] before. I didn’t expect it all when they pulled me over at the airport. “I thought it was going to be filled with all my stuff.” She told the paper she had been in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, prior to the flight, and packed her suitcase in her hotel room before heading out for the night. “They must have planted it then,” she said. “I know who did it.” She did not check her bag again before heading to Colombo, where she was arrested on 12 May, said Ms Lee. Ms Lee went to Sri Lanka as her visa was about to expire and she wanted a trip somewhere nearby before heading back to Thailand, she told the newspaper. She added that she faces harsh conditions in the prison, including sleeping on a concrete floor. Ms Lee is said to have flown from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport around the same time as another British woman, Bella Culley, 18, from Billingham, County Durham, who is being held in Georgia on suspicion of drug offences. The BBC understands Miss Culley arrived in Tbilisi on a flight from the United Arab Emirates on 10 May. Three days later Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said Miss Culley was accused of “illegally purchasing and storing a particularly large amount of narcotics, illegally purchasing and storing the ********* drug **********, and illegally importing it into Georgia”. A senior customs officer in Sri Lanka told the BBC: “On the same day, another passenger who had left Bangkok airport, almost at the same time, was arrested in another country. We arrested this lady [Ms Lee] based on profiling.” He said there had been a massive increase in drugs coming via Bangkok into Sri Lanka. “This has been a real nuisance.” Ms Culley could face up to 20 years in jail or life imprisonment if found guilty. She is being detained before trial while Georgian authorities investigate where 26lbs (12kg) of ********** and 4.4lbs (2kg) of hashish found in a travel bag came from, and whether she was planning on handing it over to someone else. Kangaroo ‘tries to drown’ man in Australia floodwaters Kangaroo ‘tries to drown’ man in Australia floodwaters A “really muscly” kangaroo “tried to drown” a man in Australia, after the two got into a punch-up. Don James is said to have found himself fighting for his life as the marsupial held him down in floodwaters which had pooled on the side of the road near Port Macquarie – only escaping after the animal appeared to become spooked. Kristy Lees, who watched the battle unfold in her rear-view mirror, told the BBC: “It’s not everyday a big, male kangaroo decides to take you on… Even in Australia, you do not expect to see it.” She suspects the “very distressed” kangaroo had become trapped in the area following the record flooding that hit New South Wales this week, leaving five people dead. Ms Lees was first alerted to the kangaroo’s presence as she drove down to check the water levels in Port Macquarie’s North Shore with her husband, at about 09:00 local time on Friday (23:00 GMT on Thursday). Two men – one of whom was later identified as Don James by *********** news network ABC – warned them that there was a “really big” kangaroo just around the next parked car. And sure enough, there was the kangaroo – “as big as the car” it was standing next to. The next thing Ms Lees knew, the kangaroo had launched towards her car, which she had slowed to a crawl so as not to startle the animal, and started to attack it. But as he moved round to her side of the car, the kangaroo appeared to spot another target: Mr James, who was still walking away up the road. The kangaroo gave chase. “They literally got into a boxing match,” Kristy said. “I’m looking in the rear-view mirror and they are throwing punches.” Mr James then ran backwards before tripping and falling into a patch of floodwater by the side of the road. The next thing Kristy knew, the “kangaroo was holding him down”. “The kangaroo tried to drown the man,” she said. “I realised what was happening and told my husband [who couldn’t see the fight from his seat] to get out the car and help.” But then the kangaroo appears to have been spooked – perhaps by the approaching car driven by Mr James’s friend – allowing him to escape down towards Ms Lees, who has since tried to warn as many neighbours as possible. “The kangaroo was trying to drown me,” he told Ms Lees, who was able to say she had seen it all. “I just remember being under water and kicking and screaming and carrying on,” Mr James later told ABC. It was, he said, “pretty traumatic for a while there”. Kangaroos have been known to appear to attempt to drown their foes – although these are usually animals the size of dogs. Kangaroo ecologist Graeme Coulson, from the University of Melbourne, revealed to ABC that his neighbour had lost two dogs that way. “There’s a very strong instinct – kangaroos will go to water if they’re threatened by a predator,” he told the news network. However, he said, the behaviour is likely more about protecting themselves than drowning their foe. That is unlikely to make Mr James feel any better about Friday morning’s altercation – especially as he told Ms Lees that just 12 months ago he had fended off another attack, that time by a great white shark. “I feel like they’re trying to kill me, all these animals,” he reportedly said. The BBC has attempted to contact Mr James for comment. Source link #Kangaroo #drown #man #Australia #floodwaters Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

EU awaits clarity on Trump’s 50 per cent tariff threat EU awaits clarity on Trump’s 50 per cent tariff threat Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says US President Donald Trump does not believe that the European Union’s trade offers to the United States are of sufficient quality and that he hopes that a June 1 50 per cent tariff threat will “light a fire under the EU” in negotiations with the US. Bessent told Fox News Channel that many other top US trading partners are negotiating in good faith with the exception of the EU. Intensifying his trade push, Trump on Friday said he was “recommending” a 50 per cent tariff on EU goods starting on June 1 and warned Apple that he may impose a 25 per cent tariff on any iPhones manufactured outside the US. The bombshell announcement comes a day after Bessent wrapped up meetings with G7 finance leaders, including European Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis. The G7 ministers meeting in Banff, Alberta, papered over deep divisions on Trump’s tariffs to reach agreement on efforts to reduce “excessive imbalances” in the global economy. “The conversation in Canada was fine. The problem was the lead up to that,” Bessent said. He told Fox News that other countries have been making trade offers in good faith, and that talks were advanced with some of them, including India and some Asian countries that have made some “very interesting proposals”. “And I believe the president believes that the EU proposals have not been of the same quality that we’ve seen from our other important trading partners,” Bessent said. He said the feedback he’s getting from some EU countries is that they are unaware of proposals being put forth by the European Commission from Brussels. “I’m not going to negotiate on TV but I would hope that this would light a fire under the EU,” Bessent said. “The EU has a collective action problem here. It’s 27 countries but they’re being represented by this one group in Brussels.” Regarding Trump’s threat to add a 25 per cent tariff to Apple iPhones manufactured outside the United States, Bessent said Trump wanted to bring precision manufacturing back to the United States, including semiconductors. “I think that one of our greatest vulnerabilities is this external production, especially in semiconductors. And a large part of Apple’s components are in semiconductors,” Bessent said. “So we would like to have Apple help us make the semiconductor supply chain more secure.” The European Commission, which oversees trade policy for the EU, said it would not comment until after a call between European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Major stock indices tumbled, the US dollar fell against major currencies and the euro pared gains after Trump’s announcement on EU tariffs.
