South Korea frontrunner Lee suggests extending US tariff talks
Lee Jae-myung, mayor of Seongnam city, on Nov. 23, 2016. Lee is rising in opinion polls with about a year to go until South Korea’s next presidential election. He wants to break up the country’s biggest companies, meet unconditionally with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and throw President Park Geun-hye in jail over an influence-peddling scandal.

South Korean presidential frontrunner Lee Jae-myung said on Sunday the deadline to reach a deal with the U.S. on President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs needs to be reconsidered to find a mutually beneficial agreement between the two allies.
Tariff negotiations with the United States will be one of the biggest challenges for the winner of the June 3 election, Lee told a press conference.
The snap election was called after Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached as president and removed from office for briefly declaring martial law in December. Lee, from the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea, is leading in opinion polls over conservative contestants.
Seoul and Washington have said they aim to craft a package on tariffs and economic cooperation by July 8. But the South Korean minister for trade and industry said recently that was not enough time and delays would be possible due to the election.
“There is not much time,” Lee said. “Isn’t diplomacy something that benefits both sides? If one country benefits and the other country suffers unilaterally, that is not diplomacy. It is called plunder.”
He called for mutual respect between the two countries, saying they “need to reconsider whether the timeline set by one side should be bound to”.
Lee said South Korea must compile an extra budget to boost the economy in the short term and vowed that if elected he would form and head a task force to tackle the slowing economy.
“I will swiftly prepare immediately actionable economic measures and actively respond to the domestic economic slowdown with the determination to fight the recession,” he said.
Lee said he would pursue peace on the Korean peninsula, criticising the ousted Yoon’s tough policy on North Korea, which he said had raised tensions high, burdening the economy and adding to concerns among foreign investors.
“We should maintain and strengthen our powerful defence capabilities, military power and strengthen the South Korea-U.S. security alliance, but find a path toward dialogue, cooperation, communication and coexistence where possible,” said Lee, who considers pragmatism as a key to diplomacy.
Lee is leading the race with 45% support ahead of conservative rival Kim Moon-soo, Yoon’s labour minister, with 36% support in a Gallup Korea poll released on Friday.
Kim has been closing the initially double-digit gap with Lee. Asked about his recent decline in polls, Lee said he was confident that South Koreans would not choose those who supported or staged the “insurrection”, referring to the criminal charges against Yoon over martial law.

Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) star Jake Waterman injured in heavy defeat to Kuwarna (Adelaide)
Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) star Jake Waterman injured in heavy defeat to Kuwarna (Adelaide)
A shoulder injury to star forward Jake Waterman has rubbed salt into Waalitj Marawar’s (West Coast’s) wounds in a heavy 66-point defeat to Kuwarna (Adelaide) at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
Waterman had been one of the Eagles’ best with three goals but the All-*********** forward was taken from the field holding his right shoulder after finding himself in the middle of a massive collision early in the final quarter.
It came after the Eagles were ambushed by a ruthless Crows in the third term, the home side kicking seven goals to one to shake off the brave visitors and secure a 19.14 (128) to 8.14 (62) victory.
The Eagles went into the game having lost their past eight games at the iconic South *********** venue, including a 99-point defeat 264 days prior.
For more than a half of footy, Andrew McQualter’s men gave the Crows a fight but ultimately the home side were able to make the scoreboard reflect the gap in class between the two outfits.
Crows captain Jordan Dawson lifted his game in the third term when Kuwarna put the Eagles to the sword, finishing with 27 disposals, eight clearances, two goals and 11 inside 50s.
Sam Berry relished his rare exposure to full midfield minutes with 26 disposals, four clearances and a goal, while prized recruit James Peatling (16 disposals and two goals) glided across the ground in an eye-catching performance.
West Coast’s day was epitomised by defender Reuben Ginbey who was incredibly brave – including taking an amazing mark back with the flight – but butchered the footy when given the chance.

Their veterans who had been so staunch in the past fortnight looked tired as the toll of a gruelling season begins to take its toll already.
The Eagles’ undersized defence would’ve breathed a sigh of relief when the Crows withdrew former skipper Taylor Walker before the bounce.
And then the reality of the monumental task ahead of them would’ve set in when Riley Thilthorpe (two goals) out-positioned two Eagles defenders to kick the first goal.
Skill errors plagued the Eagles early at both ends of the ground as simple missed kicks left them exposed on the turnover and cost them early scoring opportunities.
Oscar Allen (two goals) would’ve been the most frustrated man in South Australia, with the Eagles’ co-captain beating his opponent on several occasions only for his teammates to be unable to find him on the lead.
Promisingly, the visitors didn’t let the mistakes discourage them and they maintained their strong pressure to create turnovers the other way and hit the scoreboard.
They could’ve been in front had they been cleaner going forward, with the Crows taking an incredible nine intercept marks in the first term alone.
And they didn’t fix the issues at quarter time. Waalitj Marawar went from competitive to on top through the middle of the ground and it allowed them to dominate the territory battle.
While they had 18 inside 50s for the term, for much of the quarter it looked as if their only goal would come courtesy of a lucky bounce from Tyler Brockman, who was trying to find Allen but overcooked the kick.
At the other end Adelaide were efficient with their limited opportunities and held a 23-point lead when Thilthorpe kicked his second late in the term.
Waterman kept the Eagles within touch when he converted a long-range set shot after the half-time siren, but they could’ve been a lot closer had their midfield-forward connection been better.
The Crows was finally able to break the game open late in the third term, kicking five unanswered goals in a 13-minute ambush to blow the 17-point half-time lead out to 57 points at the last break.
Waterman’s unfortunate injury seemed to ***** the life out of the contest as Josh closed the door on a miracle comeback when he ran into an unguarded goalsquare to kick his fourth of his five majors.
Within 30 seconds the Eagles’ day may have got worse with premiership defender Tom Cole limping from the ground with a potential ankle injury.
Recruit Liam Baker may face scrutiny from the match review officer after pushing his elbow into the back of Peatling’s head after giving away a free kick.

Taco Fest shut down early after fights, reopens Sunday under new guidelines
Taco Fest shut down early after fights, reopens Sunday under new guidelines
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Taco Fest closed early Saturday after fights threatened the safety of attendees, organizer Hugo Albornoz confirmed.
Albornoz, founder and executive director of Taco Fest, said the event at Goodale Park was shut down before it’s scheduled 10 p.m. end for the safety of guests. Albornoz said people with tickets left from Saturday will be able to use them Sunday, although the festival will operate under different guidelines.
Albornoz said for Sunday’s event, only attendees older than 21 or under age 10 with immediate family will be admitted. He said they will also add more security to protect attendees. The festival had already required all minors to be accompanied by adults, but the new regulations bar pre-teen and teenage attendees entirely.
This is the second year in a row the Saturday of Taco Fest has had to shut down early due to fighting. Last year, Taco Fest was shut down after large groups of teenagers got violent, with radio runs describing a “20 to 50 person fight.” Last year, the fighting led organizers to enact an 18-and-up age restriction after 7 p.m. on the Sunday of the festival.
Two blocks away on North High Street, two people were shot around the time dispatchers said Columbus police were trying to shut down the festival. Dispatchers did not confirm a connection between the two events, and Albornoz said he knew nothing about it as it did not happen on-site.

Starmer has delivered key wins for the ***, so why is he so unpopular?
Starmer has delivered key wins for the ***, so why is he so unpopular?

A year into the job, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has scored some key wins, including recently signing major trade deals with the U.S., India and European Union that will boost the British economy and wages.
Opinion polls paint a different picture of his success.
A survey by pollster YouGov, published in mid-May, showed that the British public’s approval the prime minister has plummeted to a record low, with 69% of voters now having an unfavorable view of Starmer, while just 23% regard him enthusiastically.
More worryingly for the Labour Party leader, the fall in popularity is concentrated among Labour voters, half of whom (50%) now have an unfavorable view of Starmer — a 17-point increase from the last poll in mid-April. The share of Labour voters with a favorable opinion of him has meanwhile fallen from 62% to 45% over the month.
With things seeming to point in the right direction for the British economy, what’s going wrong for its prime minister?
Trade deals amid domestic pressures
The U.K.’s leadership might be touting their impressive record on trade deals recently, but cost-of-living pressures continue to worry ordinary British voters, and businesses are reckoning with Labour-led tax rises.
The U.K.’s annual inflation rate hit a hotter-than-expected 3.5% in April, up sharply from 2.6% in March, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday.
The data highlighted increasing pressures on British households, as prices of electricity, gas and other fuels rose by 6.7% in the year to April. The prices of water and sewerage meanwhile added 26.1% in the month to April, marking the largest monthly hike since at least February 1988, the ONS said.
British businesses now face a higher tax burden as a result of government policies introduced in the “Autumn Budget,” as well as other measures deemed be many economists to be “anti-growth.” These include limits on immigration set to affect foreign workers — who are key to a number of sectors — a rise in the national minimum wage and reforms to workers’ rights, which put pressure on many small and medium-sized firms.
As such, lofty trade deals promising economic growth and investment that will take time to feed through are cold comfort for many British consumers and businesses struggling right now.
“On domestic policy, this government hasn’t scored well so far; let’s give it a C-minus,” Kallum Pickering, chief U.K. economist at Peel Hunt, told CNBC’s “Europe Early Edition” on Wednesday. “[We’ve seen] mostly anti- growth measures and that’s the thing that disrupted bond markets over the past few months.”
On foreign and international policy, the government is “doing a fairly good job,” with its latest trade deals a testament to that, Pickering said.
“Starmer has contained the downside risk that the U.K. and the U.S. could really escalate on trade. It’s not a good deal, but it contains downside risk. The U.K.-India deal is actually a strong signal that the U.K. is open for business. And if you read the press, people that are unhappy with the deal that the U.K. and the EU is striking but, actually, what’s the alternative?” he asked.
Big business leaders say they’re happy with the British government’s general direction of travel, with C.S. Venkatakrishnan, group chief executive of Barclays, telling CNBC Thursday that it was “absolutely on track.”
“If you look at if you look at what they’ve achieved over the last few weeks, they’ve had trade deals with the U.S., with India, with Europe, important trading partners. They continue to be repairing relationships with Europe, which they need to,” he told CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick.
Inflationary pressures, he noted, were evident but were not yet leading to “consumer distress,” the Barclays exec believed.
“We’re in fact seeing conduit continued consumer strength, but it’s coming because of people managing their balances and their finances prudently. So [they’re] economizing. The job market is still strong. But as you see … people are worried about inflation. People are worried about cost, whether it’s winter fuel bills or whether it’s more generalized inflation from tariffs, and the only real answer to that is growth, which is what this government is focused on, and what we want to help them.”
Personality problem
Although some quarters welcome Keir Starmer’s calmer and less bombastic approach to leadership than politicians like Reform *** leader Nigel Farage or former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, he continues to face criticism that his leadership style and personality hold him and the Labour Party back.
CNBC has contacted the Labour Party for comment on Starmer’s poll ratings and is awaiting a reply.
“Starmer has great positives — [signing] the trade deals” for one, Bill Blain, strategist and founder of Wind Shift Capital, said that the prime minister’s lack of charisma is a deficit.
“But he is dull, boring and precise. He is competent, but he is not a personality and lacks political charisma … Farage has it in spades. So did Boris Johnson,” he told CNBC Tuesday.
British opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves react during a campaign event at a farm in Oxfordshire, Britain, July 1, 2024.
Phil Noble | Reuters
“A additional problem is Starmer lacks able cabinet colleagues able to create the illusion of a cabinet of smart, leaders. Some are settling into their roles but most look out their depth. This is particularly true of Rachel Reeves … who is naturally not a risk taker,” Blain added.
“The ******* issue is the narrative — Labour present it as doing the right thing to control spending, but it’s backfired as insensitivity to their voters. They are perceived as cruel,” he said.
Starmer is coming “under pressure,” Blain noted, increasing the risk that rank and file Labour lawmakers “will revolt if the polls bite.”
“That may be happening — [meaning] mutiny!,” he said.

5 things to look for in an air purifier for hay fever
5 things to look for in an air purifier for hay fever
Seasonal allergies such as hay fever can be seriously debilitating. A good air purifier can help by capturing airborne allergens and removing them from the air. If you choose the right model – taking into account specs such as circulation rate and filter type – it can significantly reduce the number of allergen particles floating around your home.
This article aims to help you understand what to look for, and how to use an air purifier to fight seasonal allergies. Once you’re clear on what you need, our roundup of the best air purifiers offers plenty of tried-and-tested recommendations. We’ve enlisted the help of Warburg Lee, a clean air technology expert and founder and CEO of Alen, to provide his expertise.
Before we start, be aware that on its own an air purifier isn’t a miracle cure for hay fever. Allergens can still make their way into your home, through windows, doors or via clothing. And, of course, a purifier will only capture particles from the air that pass through it; it won’t remove them from surfaces. However, a good air purifier can make a difference when used alongside other precautionary measures.
You may like
Warburg holds advanced engineering degrees and is a recognized expert in air quality science and clean air technology for healthier indoor environments. He’s also founder and CEO of Austen-based air-care brand Alen.
1. A true HEPA filter
The first thing to look for is a true HEPA filter. HEPA stands for high efficiency particulate air [filter], and is an efficiency standard for air filters.
To carry the HEPA name, a filter must be able to capture at least 99.95% of particles with a diameter of 0.3 microns. That means it will catch the vast majority of allergen particles that pass through it. While very tiny fragments of pollen might still make their way through, this type of filter is still very effective.
Beware that “HEPA-style” or “HEPA-like” filters will not have been through the testing process.
2. A high CADR rate
An air purifier can only remove allergens from the air that passes through it. So in order to have an impact on your hay fever, it needs to be processing the air efficiently, and fast enough to clear allergens in the size of room in which it’s placed.
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
“The CADR indicates how quickly the purifier can clean the air. A higher CADR means faster, more frequent filtration,” explains Lee. “For example, the Alen BreatheSmart 75i has a CADR of 347 for pollen, delivering 347 cubic feet of clean air per minute, making it well suited for larger rooms during allergy season.”
3. Asthma & Allergy Friendly Certification (US)
In the US, you could also look for an Asthma & Allergy Friendly Certification. This is awarded by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and Allergy Standards Ltd (ASL), and confirms that the purifier has been independently tested and proven to reduce indoor allergens such as dust, pollen, and **** dander, without introducing harmful byproducts.
A number of Alen air purifiers have recently been awarded this certification – you can read about one of them in our 4.5* Alen BreatheSmart 45i review.
(Image credit: Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA))
4. Quiet Mark certification
Beyond the essential specs that ensure the purifier is efficiently cleaning the air, there are some additional functions that make it more suitable for use for allergies such as hay fever.
“Consider the Quiet Mark certification for low-noise performance, especially if using the purifier in bedrooms,” suggests Lee. This is an independent global certification program that identifies the quietest products in a variety of household appliance categories.
Some purifiers will even have a dedicated “night” mode designed for minimal disruption when used while sleeping.
5. Smart air sensors
“Smart sensors that adjust to real-time air quality are also helpful,” says Lee. “Units with auto mode and real-time sensors can help maintain consistent air quality without requiring manual adjustments.”
Opting for an air purifier with smart sensors means it will automatically ramp up when air quality is low, and drop to a lower mode when there are fewer particles and allergens in the air. It means it can operate efficiently and effectively, without you having to worry about it. They’re more well-suited for continuous use over long periods, which is likely what you want if you’re using it to deal with hay fever.
How should you use an air purifier to help with hay fever?
“It’s best to run air purifiers continuously during hay fever season. Pollen counts are often highest in the early morning and evening, so it’s critical to have your unit running during this time at a minimum,” advises Lee.
“It’s also a good practice to run the purifier after vacuuming or dusting, since these activities release settled allergens into the air. Keep the purifier in rooms where you spend the most time, especially the bedroom, and close windows to prevent new pollen from entering.”

Coates floats high above To’o in Maroons aerial threat
Coates floats high above To’o in Maroons aerial threat
Leaping winger Xavier Coates has a 12 centimetre height advantage over opposite number Brian To’o which Queensland hopes will translate to a 12-point gain in the State of Origin season opener.
Right winger Coates (194cm), a former high jump champion at school, has been hailed by Maroons and Melbourne teammate Harry Grant as an “aerial threat” of the highest order ahead of Wednesday night’s Suncorp Stadium clash.
Grant has also played down any concerns about his Storm coach Craig Bellamy working with NSW as an advisor to coach Laurie Daley.
With tough as teak left winger To’o (182cm) not a renowned leaper, the scope is there for Queensland to send plenty of bombs in his direction. Noted Maroons bomb disposal expert Jeremiah Nanai is also set to line up in the second-row on the right edge to add to the advantage.
Coates, 24, plays left wing for the Storm but is no stranger to playing on the other side of the field.
“Xavier has a real aerial threat. A lot of people don’t know he started on the right side of the field as a player and he changed to the left side of the field at Melbourne,” Grant said.
“He had to change his whole dynamic of competing and contesting kicks and learning how to jump off the opposite foot.
“He is a real athlete in that sense. He knows his strengths and he just works on it extremely hard. He has done that for a number of years now so he has that in his back pocket. We look forward to seeing Xavier compete on those kicks.”
The Maroons put up plenty of bombs in the direction of Coates and Nanai in an opposed session against Sunshine Coast Falcons on Sunday.
Grant acknowledged peppering To’o would be an option.
“It could be a strength,” he said.
“There’s plenty of players in their team that have got threats we have to shut down and we have guys in our team that we need to bring out.
“(Bombing To’o) is definitely one part of it but you only get certain opportunities to do that in a game and we have to earn those opportunities through the style of footy we want to play.”
Bellamy, who coached the Blues to three consecutive series losses from 2008-2010 is back plotting the demise of Storm quartet Grant, Coates, Cameron Munster, Trent Loiero and the rest of the Maroons squad. “I haven’t had any contact with Craig,” Grant said.
“I probably haven’t thought about it too much. If I worry about what he is doing or what he is saying it will take too much attention away from my game and my team and the game on Wednesday night. I just need to worry about preparing well and performing well.”
Grant said he was fully fit after missing a month with a hamstring injury.
“I got back for the Cronulla game (in round 11) and I am really confident in how I pulled up from that game,” he said.
” I went through a fair bit a few years ago with a hamstring injury and I have really learnt from that.
“That was through the Origin *******, so I definitely learnt from that. Maybe in 2021 I was surfing too much. I have focused on my body and made sure I’m alright for Wednesday night.”

Las Vegas Real Estate Market Sees Inventory Increase A Massive 44.5% As Buyers Won’t Gamble On High Prices And High Interest Rates
Las Vegas Real Estate Market Sees Inventory Increase A Massive 44.5% As Buyers Won’t Gamble On High Prices And High Interest Rates
Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below.
Gambling on the Las Vegas real estate market is a risk that buyers are increasingly unwilling to take. According to Zillow (NASDAQ:Z), inventory increased by a massive 44.5% in March compared to the same time last year.
A deluge of new construction has flooded the market, specifically in Sunbelt states, to make up for the pandemic shortfall, but high interest rates have caused homes to sit on the market.
“What’s happening nationally is playing out similarly but more prominently in Las Vegas,” Kara Ng, a senior economist with Zillow, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “Sellers are listing their homes at far greater rates than last year, but buyers are not absorbing those homes at the same rate. This has left more homes lingering on the market. However, while Las Vegas inventory is up almost 45% over the year, it’s still about 20% lower than pre-pandemic norms.”
Don’t Miss:
Zillow reported the average Las Vegas home value was $437,324 as of April, up 3.6% over the past year. The relatively modest increase is a change from previous years, when interest rates were lower in 2021-2022. However, prices are still high, which has impeded buyers.said that listings showing price cuts had skyrocketed, up by 13.6 percentage points year over year, reaching 27.3% in February.
“Affordability is a hurdle, especially for first-time buyers who are relying on savings alone, and turbulence in the stock market could push down payments out of reach,” Ng told the Review-Journal.

Part of the reason for Las Vegas home prices escalating so quickly, particularly during the work-from-home ***** during the pandemic, was the influx of Californians to the city. According to the Census Bureau, some 158,000 Californians since 2020 have moved to Nevada, accounting to 43% of new residents in the last four years.
However, the number of Californians moving to Las Vegas has dropped precipitously from the peak post-pandemic years, according to KVVU-TV, which has further contributed to the inventory buildup. A big part of the drop-off is tied to interest rates.

“A lot of people have a low-interest mortgage interest rate loan. So their monthly payment is pretty low. They couldn’t match that in the current market,” Stephen Miller, economics professor and director of research for the Lee Business School’s Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Las Vegas, told KVVU-TV.
“As soon as the lockdown hit, people started bailing out of California left and right,” Jeff Stelter, manager of business development at Muscle Movers, told KVVU-TV. “We saw a huge ***** during the lockdown for about two years, and people couldn’t get out of there fast enough,” Stelter continued. “We saw a big drop recently. Long advantageous, Harvard’s China ties become a political liability
Long advantageous, Harvard’s China ties become a political liability
By Michael Martina
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Harvard University’s links to China, long an asset to the school, have become a liability as the Trump administration levels accusations that its campus is plagued by Beijing-backed influence operations.
On Thursday the administration moved to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll foreign students, saying it fostered antisemitism and coordinated with the ******** ********** Party. Among them are ******** nationals who made up about a fifth of Harvard’s foreign student intake in 2024, the university said.
A U.S. judge on Friday temporarily blocked the administration’s order after the Cambridge, Massachusetts, university sued.
The concerns about ******** government influence at Harvard are not new. Some U.S. lawmakers, many of them Republicans, have expressed worries that China is manipulating Harvard to gain access to U.S. advanced technology, to circumvent U.S. security laws and to stifle criticism of it in the United States.
“For too long, Harvard has let the ******** ********** Party exploit it,” a White House official told Reuters on Friday, adding the school had “turned a blind eye to vigilante CCP-directed harassment on-campus.”
Harvard did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
The school has said the revocation was a punishment for Harvard’s “perceived viewpoint,” which it called a violation of the right to free speech as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment.
Harvard’s links to China, which include research partnerships and China-focused academic centers, are longstanding. The ties have yielded major financial gifts, influence in international affairs and global prestige for the school.
Former Harvard President Larry Summers, who has at times been critical of the university, called the Trump administration’s move to block foreign students the most serious attack on the university to date.
“It’s hard to imagine a greater strategic gift to China than for the United States to sacrifice its role as a beacon to the world,” he said in an interview with Politico.
HEALTH TRAINING
In a statement, the ******** embassy in Washington said: “Educational exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States are mutually beneficial and should not be stigmatized.”
The presence of ******** students at Harvard and the school’s links to the country are not evidence of wrongdoing. But the complexity and overlapping nature of the connections have been opaque enough to attract attention and criticism.
The China-related issues cited by the Trump administration echo the work of the Republican-led House of Representatives’ Select Committee on China.
For example, Harvard provided public health-related training to Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) officials after 2020. That year the U.S. imposed sanctions on the ******** paramilitary organization for its role in alleged human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other ******* ethnic groups in Xinjiang.
The Department of Homeland Security said those engagements with XPCC continued “as recently as 2024.”
China vehemently denies any accusations of wrongdoing in Xinjiang, but both the Trump and Biden administrations have defined Beijing’s policies in the region as “genocide.”
In another episode that has drawn questions, U.S. business intelligence firm Strategy Risks said that Ronnie Chan, who facilitated a $350 million donation to Harvard in 2014 that led to its school of public health being named for his father, property developer T.H. Chan, is a member of the China-United States Exchange Foundation.
The Hong Kong-based organization, which says its aim is to foster dialogue between the two countries, has been classified as a foreign principal under U.S. law, requiring U.S. lobbyists working for it to disclose that work to the U.S. government.
FORMER PROFESSOR CONVICTED
Former Harvard Professor Charles Lieber was scrutinized by a Trump program started in 2018 called the China Initiative, which was focused on fighting ******** espionage and intellectual property theft and investigated researchers and universities over whether they disclosed financial ties to Beijing.
He was convicted in 2021 of lying about his ties to China in connection with federally funded research. In April, he became a full-time professor at a ******** university.
The initiative was halted under the Biden administration after critics said it led to racial profiling and a culture of fear that chilled scientific collaboration.
U.S. lawmakers from both parties have expressed worries about the efforts by Beijing-linked student associations to monitor political activities. In April 2024, a Harvard student activist was physically ejected from an event by a ******** exchange student – not faculty or security staff – for interrupting a speech by China’s Ambassador Xie Feng.
Pressure has mounted on Harvard in Trump’s second term, with the Education Department in April asking the university to provide records on its foreign funding after it said a review of required reporting on large foreign-source gifts and contracts revealed incomplete and inaccurate disclosures.
The Trump administration’s moves against Harvard have nonetheless alarmed some China experts.
Yaqiu Wang, a U.S.-based human rights researcher who came to the U.S. from China as a student, said the Trump administration’s move to ban foreign students at Harvard was “completely counterproductive.”
“The concerns over the ******** government’s transnational repression attempts to silence critics are very legitimate, and also espionage concerns are legitimate.” Wang said. “But to try to address that by banning, not only ******** students, but foreign students, is just beyond comprehension.”

King’s trip to Canada is major test for the monarchy
King’s trip to Canada is major test for the monarchy
On Tuesday, towards the end of a trip limited to just 24 hours on ********* soil, the King will appear at the country’s senate to officially open its parliament.
He will be there as King of Canada, head of state at a moment in history at which ********* sovereignty is very publicly under threat. It will be, ********* sources say, a test like no other.
Delivering a speech that will knit together the ********* government’s priorities with some of his own words, all eyes will be on the King as he walks the unexpected diplomatic minefield of 2025.
In doing so, he will answer the question of the monarchy’s relevance in Canada for a new generation: a chance to prove how having a King who lives so far away still benefits the national interest.
The King will be following in the footsteps of his late mother Queen Elizabeth II, attending the state opening of parliament on his first visit to Canada as sovereign and delivering only the third royal speech from its throne.
This time though, it comes shortly after the country faced a threat of invasion from its nearest neighbour, which unified Canadians in outrage. Donald Trump, US president, suggested he would annex it to make it the 51st state.
Credit: Reuters
“Canada has a steadfast defender in our sovereign,” said Mark Carney, Canada’s prime minister, who has repeated that his country is “not for *****, ever”.
The King’s visit, said Canada’s high commissioner in the ***, will “reinforce the power and the strength” of that message.
“In a subtle way,” writes the Ottawa Citizen newspaper, “the King will be sending a message about Canada’s place in the world.”
The Globe and Mail, the national newspaper, predicts that it is a chance for the monarchy to find “new relevance as Trump threatens annexation”, saying it was an “opportune time for King Charles, who has struggled to win over the public”.
For Patricia Treble, a ********* journalist who has been covering royal visits for more than 20 years, “everything from speeches to clothes and jewellery must scream ‘the King and Queen of Canada are defending Canada’s sovereignty’”.
“This is an existential threat to Canada,” she said of Mr Trump’s attitude to her country. “All Canadians understand the seriousness of this threat and importance of this visit.
“Everything must be done to show the King and Queen are coming to Canada, defending Canada’s sovereignty.
“People are going to be counting every word the King says. This is a turning point for the Crown – this trip really matters.”
Ms Treble added that the issue had underlined the point of having a monarchy to the public: “All of a sudden the advantages are very apparent.”
Queen Elizabeth II during her 1997 visit to Canada – Carlo Allegri
The royal visit, which the palace hopes will be a tour de force of soft-power diplomacy, will span just two days, with the 76-year-old King – still undergoing ******* treatment – fitting in eight engagements and a speech to the ********* parliament.
He will drop the puck in a street hockey game, travel through the streets with the Queen in the 1902 State Landau, lay a wreath at the Second World War memorial in the year of the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, and watch a Royal ********* Air Force flyover.
The King will also find himself “navigating diplomatic rapids”, palace sources concede, which will leave him drawing on a lifetime of international diplomacy and cross-country friendships.
The issue has been complicated by the Royal family’s involvement in the ***’s “soft-power” wooing of the US ahead of a trade deal earlier this year, with the King set to host Mr Trump in September before a second state visit next year.
Canadians were “not impressed” by the invitation, Mr Carney has said, leaving the prospect that the King would visit the US or host Mr Trump before he had set foot in Canada as its King.
He will now make it to Canada first.
The King and Queen’s trip to Canada was originally planned for spring 2024, never announced but postponed while the King was beginning his ******* treatment and delayed again for the ********* election cycle.
The new invitation to open parliament was made at short notice, put in the diary for as soon as possible once Mr Carney’s Liberal Party was elected.
‘Held in high regard’
The trip schedule includes engagements allowing the King and Queen to meet members of the public, ********* leaders, and for the Queen to be sworn in as a member of the King’s Privy Council for Canada.
“I think people will understand that there is a particular role as head of state of Canada,” said one palace source, on the differing demands of the King overseas.
“The King is held in high regard by global leaders across geographical and political boundaries.
“Hopefully he will be able to bring the wisdom, experience and personal relationships to bear, to smooth over any wrinkles without it being a provocation.”
The King has already been the recipient of “warm comments” from both Mr Trump and Mr Carney, they said, after in-person meetings with both this year.
There will be “really lovely symmetry” with Queen Elizabeth II’s first visit, added a palace source, with the King “very pleased and proud to be following in her footsteps”.
The two-day trip does not preclude a longer visit in the near future.
“The only sadness is that he’s not able to go for longer and further,” said the source close to the King. “There is a keen appetite if an invitation was issued to make a fuller visit.”
“This is a highly significant royal visit,” said Carolyn Harris, a royal historian based in Canada.
“The King acts on the advice of the ********* government and has to remain above party politics, so he has to avoid using particular slogans. But the very fact of the presence of the King and Queen is a reminder of ********* sovereignty.”
‘Gesture of solidarity’
Robert Bothwell, historian, said that the King’s speech in parliament “is a gesture of solidarity and identity that can be construed to be a gesture of support”.
The *** Government, watching from afar, will also be mindful of how the visit is seen by the rest of the Commonwealth, and within Mr Trump’s administration at a critical time for the “special relationship”.
Pete Hoekstra, the new US ambassador to Canada, said that using the King’s visit to send messages to his country is not necessary, urging politicians to “move on”.
“We’re thrilled that the King will be here,” he added. “If there’s a message in there, you know, there’s easier ways to send messages. Just give me a call. Carney can call the president at any time.”
The King, as Prince Charles, has previously visited Canada 19 times. Queen Elizabeth II read the speech at the state opening of parliament in 1957, and delivered a speech from the throne in 1977.
Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal, predicts that the King is “unlikely to comment directly on the 51st state issue”.
“Yet, his introductory remarks could feature broad statements about Canada’s integrity and sovereignty,” he added. “At least this is what many Canadians would like him to do.”

Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) Eagles star Jake Waterman hurts shoulder in Kuwarna (Adelaide) Crows clash
Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) star forward Jake Waterman could be set for a stint on the sidelines after hurting his shoulder against Kuwarna (Adelaide).
Waterman was crunched in a marking contest in the fourth quarter at Adelaide Oval and was assisted from the field by medical staff clutching his right shoulder, which appeared dislocated.
The 27-year-old had been one of the few bright spots for the Eagles on Sunday, kicking a team-high three goals as the Crows made light work of the bottom-placed side.
Waterman has kicked 14 goals across seven games this season, after earning a maiden All-*********** selection with a career-high 53 goals last year.
More to come.

The boss who has found ‘nature’s answer to plastic’
The boss who has found ‘nature’s answer to plastic’
Insiya Jafferjee, right, won the 2025 Bold Future Award for founding Shellworks. · Dave Benett via Getty Images
Insiya Jafferjee has always taken an ambitious approach to engineering — ever since she made robots swim across the bathtub as a child.
Fast forward to her burgeoning business career and, last month, she received a ****** Clicquot Bold Woman Award at the Royal Opera House for her achievements at Shellworks, a London-based start-up which turns bacteria into biodegradable materials and performs like plastic.
Read More: ‘Why we set up a sustainable mobile operator to save people money’
Standing on stage to receive her award, which celebrates female entrepreneurs of the future, she noted how Madame Clicquot had revolutionised an age-old industry in champagne making and why her company had similar aspirations.
“We’re really trying to take on an industry that hasn’t been disrupted and doesn’t want to be disrupted,” the 33-year-old tells Yahoo Finance ***. “And you kind of need that naivety outside to be able to do it.”
The Bold Woman judges said they were impressed by Jafferjee and her co-founder Amir Afshar’s commitment to building a company that had significant scale since launching in 2019. It has already replaced 40 tonnes of plastic and 1.2 million units of packaging and is on track for £4.5m in revenue in 2025.
Shellworks has already replaced 40 tonnes of plastic and 1.2m packaging solutions that would have otherwise relied on petroleum plastics.
“We are very ambitious and we have been quite ruthless about it,” she added. “People often doubt that what we do is even possible. Proving them wrong at every stage has been my boldest and bravest achievement.”
The company name was born out of initially extracting shellfish waste into a versatile, biodegradable bioplastic.
However the founders, who met at Imperial College, realised from the outset it would be hard to scale and made the first of several pivots into creating the world’s first biodegradable material that is durable enough to withstand heat and humidity.
Vivomer, says Jafferjee, is the perfect plastic replacement. A polymer grown by microorganisms that breaks down naturally in any environment, it also has a longer shelf life. Nature’s answer to plastic, adds Jafferjee.
“When you look at the fundamental technology, you are able to grow a polymer in the cell of a microorganism and you kind of scale that up using fermentation, similar to what we do for food,” she says.
Read More: The life lesson behind a 335-year-old ******** business? ‘Never sleep on an argument’
“What is amazing is that material, when you take it out of the cell, behaves just like a plastic. But when you put it back into a natural environment, that could be a soil, marine or landfill, it can be degraded by the same microorganisms.
Story continues
“Amir and I would always say, ‘Wouldn’t it be amazing if you had a material that did everything that you wanted plastic to do, but only when you threw it away, it would degrade’. When we found something like this, we really tried to understand why it hasn’t been scaled because it is really the true solution to plastic.”
Insiya Jafferjee founded Shellworks with one mission: To end our dependence on plastic.
Making materials from shellfish waste saw unique headlines which left the start-up fielding several hundred enquiries a day. In 2023, they had also around 200 largely smaller brand customers in its pipeline and paused most of their operations.
Shellworks, which employs around 20 staff, then spent six weeks calling every industry to gauge where it could pivot and accrue faster close rates.
“I don’t know anything other than trying to do like 200 million units in 12 months right out of the gate and very high quality,” admits Jafferjee.
Hailing from Sri Lanka, resilience has also played its part in being able to deal with risk and pressure in business — the business suffered a fire in 2021 and had to restart operations by purchasing machines at auction — and leveraging her skill set.
“The environment itself forces you to be quite resilient because we’ve always gone through hardship and grew up during a war, the economy is always on and off and nothing is ever certain,” she says.
Read More: Meet the company that finds ‘must-haves’ to make everyday life easier
As is Jafferjee’s wont, she has focused on fast growth thanks to a background in large-scale manufacturing and operations, having interned at Ford (F) and worked at Apple (AAPL) for nearly three years before moving to London and setting up Shellworks.
“I used to have this frustration with Apple where they have such incredible people, but I always felt like we’re leveraging these people to make a product versus being able to do something that’s really world-changing.”
Shellworks still had to overcome scepticism as to whether their production was “truly green”, but they now partner with major retailers including Tesco (TSCO.L) and Boots and count companies such as Wild Cosmetics, which was purchased by Unilever (ULVR.L) recently, as a client.
The latter could also be a game-changer for Shellworks as it aims to hit £10m revenue come 2026, having received around £7.5m in funding from global investors.
Insiya Jafferjee, co-founder and CEO of Shellworks, was named winner of the Bold Future Award alongside Bold Woman winner Dame Julia Hoggett.
“I really do think it is scale that enables us to actually truly compete with petrochemical plastic, because they operate on such a great magnitude than we do,” says Jafferjee.
“I think a lot of people know for a long time that plastics have kind of been vilified in terms of consumers hating it, it’s a material and everyone wants to get rid of it.”
The entrepreneur says that Shellworks remains naive and sometimes overestimates what it can achieve as a biotech start-up.
Yet optimism abounds, just as her Bold Future award showcases. “But we always shoot for the moon and then hope that we can meet it,” she adds.

Trump Still Seems Convinced That Stealth Jets Are Literally Invisible
Trump Still Seems Convinced That Stealth Jets Are Literally Invisible
As expected, President Donald Trump‘s commencement speech at West Point on Saturday was packed with characteristically unhinged tangents. From drag queens to trophy wives, the president’s ramblings covered a wide range of bizarre topics in between shots at Russia, Biden, and Obama as he spoke to the graduating cadets.
However, one avenue of free-associative speculation Trump meandered along while speaking about military investment seemed to confirm that one of his much-derided beliefs remains intact: the president seems to genuinely believe that so-called “stealth” fighter jets—military aircraft designed to be difficult to detect by radar—are actually invisible.
“We are buying you new airplanes, brand new beautiful planes, redesigned planes, brand new planes, totally stealth planes,” Trump said, speaking to a proposed record increase in defense spending.
“I hope they’re stealth. I don’t know, that whole stealth thing, I’m sort of wondering.
“We shape a wing this way, they don’t see it. But the other way they see it? I’m not so sure, but that’s what they tell me!“
This is familiar territory for Trump, who has made similar remarks since at least 2017. In October of that year, Trump concerned reporters when discussing the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in Puerto Rico.
“Amazing job,” Trump said at the time. “So amazing we are ordering hundreds of millions of dollars of new airplanes for the Air Force, especially the F-35. You like the F-35? … You can’t see it. You literally can’t see it. It’s hard to fight a plane you can’t see.”
“That’s an expensive plane you can’t see.”
At a Thanksgiving Day visit to a Coast Guard Station in Florida that same year, Trump doubled down on this seeming belief, saying he had asked “some Air Force guys” whether flying an “invisible” plane would look like what he had seen in films.
“I said, ‘How good is this plane?’ They said, ‘Well, sir, you can’t see it.’ I said, yeah, but in a fight—you know, a fight, like I watch in the movies—they fight, they’re fighting. How good is this? They say, ‘Well, it wins every time because the enemy cannot see it. Even if it’s right next to it, it can’t see it.’ I said, ‘That helps. That’s a good thing.’”
Years of experience as Commander in Chief do not seem to have steered Trump toward the realization that such planes, which are shaped to either deflect or absorb incoming radar signals used to track movement, are meant to be difficult to detect. But can still be seen by the naked eye. In 2020, there was this remark:
“[The F-35 is] the greatest fighter jet in the world, as you know, by far. Stealth. Totally stealth. You can’t see it. Makes it very difficult. I was asking a pilot, ‘What do you think is better: This one? This one? That one?’ Talking about Russian planes, ******** planes. He said, ‘Well, the advantage we have is you can’t see it.’ So when we’re fighting, they can’t see us. I say, ‘That sounds like a really big advantage to me.’”
While Trump is no stranger to wild exaggerations and hyperbolic comparisons, the repeated factual inaccuracy over the invisibility capabilities of military aircraft continues to raise eyebrows.
British journalist Mehdi Hassan, in picking up on the most recent “invisible” planes comment, wrote that it was difficult to determine if such remarks are “ignorance” or “inanity.”
”His weirdness cannot be overstated,“ Hassan concluded.
