Truth walks path through Indigenous culture and history
Truth walks path through Indigenous culture and history
Indigenous leaders have set off on a 370-kilometre journey, joined by hundreds of supporters to raise awareness of Australia’s first formal truth-telling process.
Kerrupmara Gunditjmara man Travis Lovett begun a 25-day walk from Portland in Victoria’s southwest to Melbourne, to highlight the Yoorrook Justice Commission’s coming report on injustices against First Nations people since colonisation.
A ceremonial event and smoking ceremony were held on Sunday a short distance from where Edward Henty landed in 1834, establishing the first permanent European settlement in the state.
Lovett, who is deputy chair of the commission, described the journey as a “historic moment” for Victoria’s truth-telling journey.
The commission has been working for the past four years, detailing the official record of the impact of historical and ongoing injustices endured by First Peoples in Victoria.
Thousands of people are expected to join sections of the walk over the coming month as it moves through cultural and historical sites across Victoria including Port Fairy, Warrnambool, Colac and Footscray.
Mr Lovett, who has strong family ties to the region, is expected to be the only walker for the entire route.
He hoped the walk would bring Victorians together to listen, learn and move forward in unity.
“Since colonisation it has been an important way to advocate for change,” Lovett said.
“Today we begin another important and historic walk – to bring Victorians together to listen, learn and move forward united.”

Opposition vows boycott as Venezuela holds divisive new vote
Opposition vows boycott as Venezuela holds divisive new vote
Can Venezuelans be persuaded to return to the polls on Sunday, 10 months after President Nicolas Maduro claimed a third term in elections marred by violence and allegations of fraud?
The issue of voter participation is the big unknown as the sanctions-hit Caribbean country returns to the polls to elect a new parliament and 24 state governors.
The main opposition led by Maria Corina Machado, an engineer and former MP, has urged Venezuelans not to legitimize what they see as yet another sham election by voting.
A small opposition faction led by two-time former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles rejected the boycott call, arguing that previous voter stayaways had merely allowed 62-year-old Maduro to expand his grip on power.
“We must vote as an act of resistance, of struggle,” said Capriles, who is running for parliament.
– ‘Fight the dictatorship’ –
Tensions were high in the run-up to the election.
More than 400,000 security agents were deployed to monitor the vote.
On Friday, a leading opposition member and close ally of Machado, Juan Pablo Guanipa, was arrested on charges of heading a “terrorist network” planning to attack Sunday’s vote.
Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello linked Guanipa, a former MP, to a group of 50 people arrested earlier in the week on suspicion of being mercenaries in the pay of foreign powers.
Venezuela, which frequently alleges foreign-backed coup plots, said the suspects entered the country from Colombia and closed the busy border with its neighbor until after the election.
Guanipa is just the latest opposition leader to be targeted by the authorities.
Opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia went into exile in Spain last year after a bounty was put on his head.
A message on Guanipa’s X account, shortly after his arrest, declared he had been “kidnapped by the forces of Nicolas Maduro’s regime” but would continue the “long fight against the dictatorship.”
– US blow to oil revenues –
Many opposition supporters in Venezuela lost any remaining faith they had in the electoral process after the July presidential election.
Maduro claimed to have won a third term, without producing detailed results to back his claim.
The opposition published its own tally of results from polling stations, which appeared to showed a convincing win for Gonzalez Urrutia.
A deadly crackdown on protests that erupted over Maduro’s victory claim cemented Venezuela’s pariah status on the world stage.
Only a handful of countries, including longtime allies Russia and Cuba, have recognized Maduro as the country’s rightful leader.
Sunday’s election comes as the country’s economy — once the envy of Latin America, now in tatters after years of mismanagement and sanctions — faces even further turmoil.
US President Donald Trump has revoked permission for oil giant Chevron to continue pumping Venezuelan crude, potentially depriving Maduro’s administration of its last lifeline.
Washington has also revoked deportation protection from 350,000 Venezuelan migrants in the United States and expelled hundreds of others to a brutal prison for gangsters in El Salvador.
The pressure has failed to sway Maduro, who continues to defy the world and spar with his neighbors.
On Sunday, Venezuela will for the first time hold elections for parliament and state governor in the disputed oil-rich region of Essequibo, on its border with Guyana.
Guyana has administered the region for decades but Caracas has threatened to partially annex it.

Walyalup (Fremantle) Dockers captain Alex Pearce learns fate for collision with Darcy Byrne-Jones
Walyalup (Fremantle) Dockers captain Alex Pearce learns fate for collision with Darcy Byrne-Jones
Walyalup (Fremantle) captain Alex Pearce has been offered a three-match suspension for the collision which left Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) forward Darcy Byrne-Jones concussed during Saturday night’s win at Optus Stadium.
Pearce collided with Byrne-Jones as the Power forward ran back with the flight of the ball in a marking contest.
The AFL’s Match Review Officer deemed Pearce was careless, struck Byrne-Jones high and also rated the impact as severe, resulting in a three-game suspension.
If Pearce accepts that penalty he will miss matches against Gold Coast, North Melbourne and Essendon. But with the Dockers having a bye during that time, the star backman won’t be available to play again until June 29.
WATCH THE INCIDENT IN THE VIDEO PLAYER ABOVE
The Dockers appear likely to challenge that ban at the AFL Tribunal given coach Justin Longmuir was adamant Pearce had done nothing wrong after the game.
He launched a strong defence saying: “I’m not concerned at all. I loved the courage of Byrne-Jones. You never like to see anyone get injured, but from what I saw, Alex was making a play on the ball. It was extreme courage to go back with the flight like that and touch the ball before Alex gets there but from what I see, Alex is making a play on the ball.
“I don’t think he makes contact with the head. What’s Alex supposed to do in that situation? Pull out of that contest and let him mark it going back with the flight? He’d get crucified if Alex pulled out of that contest. That’s what would happen.
“I don’t have any issues with it. There’s things that happen in our game and there’s unfortunate contact that happens in our game. It happens in marking contests a lot. I see it as one of those situations.
“I didn’t think it was a free kick. I’ve got no issues with it being paid as a free kick. But I didn’t think really think it was a free kick. I thought it was two guys contesting the ball. I didn’t see any head high contact.”

Andrew Brayshaw, Caleb Serong and Neil Erasmus were also cited but they have been offered fines. Brayshaw can accept a $1000 fine for attempting to trip Ollie Wines, Serong was fined $1000 for making careless contact with an umpire while Erasmus must pay $2000 for engaging in rough conduct towards Willem Drew.
Yartapuulti’s Rory Atkins was also fined $2000 for engaging in rough conduct towards Murphy Reid.

Exhibition shows memories of bygone Cardiff community
Exhibition shows memories of bygone Cardiff community

Photos of Tiger Bay, taken for Picture Post magazine by Bert Hardy in 1950, will be part of an exhibition at National Museum Cardiff
“It wasn’t whether we were ****** or white, Christian or ******* or Greek Orthodox – if you lived in Tiger Bay, you were from the bay.”
Gaynor Legall and three of her life-long friends have been looking at old photographs and reminiscing about growing up in Cardiff’s Tiger Bay in the 1950s.
Tiger Bay is Wales’ oldest multi-ethnic community and sprang up in the 1800s when sailors from around the world came to work around the city’s prosperous coal trade.
Gaynor and her friends Dawn Collins, Pauline Williams and Farida Mohamed are all granddaughters of men who travelled from their homelands and grew up in the close-knit dockland community together.
Bert Hardy/Getty Images
This image, entitled Dancing Down The Bay, was taken at St Mary’s School in 1950
“We never looked at people’s colour, we never looked at people’s race, we were one big happy family,” recalled Pauline, 81.
The friends have been selecting photographs of old Tiger Bay to be displayed at National Museum Cardiff.
The ****** and white photos, taken by photographer Bert Hardy in 1950 for British Picture Post, will be shown at an exhibition about the photo-magazine.
The publication, which ran in the *** between 1938 and 1957, captured everyday life and major events and reached 1.7 million readers at its peak.
Bert Hardy/Getty Images
The pictures show glimpses of life in Cardiff’s Tiger Bay almost 70 years ago
Seeing the images “just threw us back to childhood,” said Farida, 81.
Dawn, 78, said it had made her look at her childhood in a new light.
“We thought that everything looked beautiful but when you look at some of the pictures you think they are kind of sad,” she said.
“We looked poor, even though we didn’t feel poor because everybody was in the same situation around us.”

The women recalled a community where everyone looked out for each other.
“If Pauline’s mother didn’t have something she could knock my nana’s door and vice versa,” said Dawn.
“And you know what, you were glad to help, you always had somebody that you could turn to or just have a kind word.”
The friends all grew up taking part in each other’s religious and cultural events.
Dawn said at Eid all the children, regardless of religion, would go to the mosque wearing a headscarf and be fed.
“We were taught to respect from when we were little children,” she said.
“We didn’t feel threatened by other religions and other customs,” added Gaynor.
“We embraced them, we took them… we just got involved in whatever our friends were doing and we were never turned away and made to feel different.”
Bert Hardy/Getty Images
The friends say after parts of Tiger Bay was demolished during slum clearance projects the area lost its sense of community
Tiger Bay was also a sanctuary from the racism the community experienced in various aspects of daily life.
In the 1950s and ’60s it was not unusual for rental listings to include signs that read: “No *******, no Irish, no dogs.”
****** workers also often got paid less for the same work as their white counterparts.
“My father worked as a welder for a big steel company and used to train the white supervisors that would come in for them to be his supervisor,” said Dawn.
“He would say at the table ‘I trained another one today’.”
Bert Hardy/Getty Images
Gladstone Street was demolished as part of the urban renewal project
Pauline recalled being refused entry to clubs because of the colour of her skin.
“Some of them would allow ****** women in because we are exotic and beautiful and so we would attract business,” added Gaynor.
“But they wouldn’t let the men and boys in.”
She said there was a sense of “us against the rest of the world”.
Bert Hardy/Getty Images
The railway bridge, seen here, acted as a “barrier” between Tiger Bay and the rest of Cardiff
The railway bridge acted as a buffer between their community and the rest of Cardiff, they said.
“My father was chased home many, many, many times from different places and the minute he got under the bridge he could breathe a sigh of relief because the ones that were chasing him wouldn’t come any further than that,” said Dawn.
“We were clearly not welcome in town,” added Gaynor.
“So the bridge was the sort of a barrier between us and them and there certainly was an us and them.”
In the 1960s, many of the original buildings, including Loudoun Square, were demolished as part of slum clearance projects.
Older housing was replaced with new, modern developments and many families were moved out of Tiger Bay.
Dawn had grown up with her parents and two siblings in her grandmother’s house on Sophia Street and her family were moved to a council house in Ely.
“My mother cried every single day,” she recalled.
“She would put all three of us in the pram and push us back down the bay every single day, looking around for somebody that would exchange with her because she absolutely hated being away from everything she knew.”
Bert Hardy/Getty Images
Children would often play together on the streets of Tiger Bay
Farida and her family were also moved to Ely and she said she “cried to come home every day of the four-and-a-half years we were there”.
“It was horrendous because you had neighbours on either side with big hedges, so you were afraid to look over the hedge in case they thought you were imposing on them.”
Many Tiger Bay families were eventually able to move back to the area but it was forever changed, the rows of terraces replaced by a council estate of high rise flats and maisonettes.
Farida said: “It split everybody up and even though we were still in the same area there was no sense of community really.”
Bert Hardy/Getty Images
Tiger Bay has a rich and diverse music scene rooted in its vibrant community
Gaynor was the first ****** female councillor in Wales and has spent much of her life working for race equality and women’s rights.
She was approached by the curators of the exhibition Picture Post: A Twentieth Century Icon who wanted members of the Tiger Bay community to select photos.
“We are involved in telling the story,” she said.
“It’s not just pictures of some exotic person.”
Bert Hardy/Getty Images
Tiger Bay was home to people from more than 50 different countries
So what drives her and her friends to keep telling the story of Tiger Bay?
“It was a struggle for those men who came here early,” she said.
“They had a rough time and the white women that married them had a rough time but they struggled and they survived and they thrived.
“We need to honour those people – we’re here because of them.”
Dawn wants to make sure people don’t forget.
“My grandfather from Sierra Leone came to this country when he was 15 years old,” she said.
“I don’t want my grandchildren to forget about where they came from.”

England v Zimbabwe: Shoaib Bashir puts doubts over his place “to bed”
England v Zimbabwe: Shoaib Bashir puts doubts over his place “to bed”
In the aftermath in Nottingham, Stokes praised Bashir for speaking about wanting to remain patient on the field during the win.
“That is something he’s definitely got a lot better at,” Stokes said.
“The big progression with him has been building towards a dismissal and not getting too giddy – that was the word he used out there.
“He’s always in the battle. He loves it when guys come after him, because he then feels like he’s got to think a little bit more.”
There were also small technical tweaks against Zimbabwe, too.
He moved around 5cm closer to the stumps when bowling over the wicket and 8cm closer when bowling round the wicket compared to previous home Tests.
As a result, the number of deliveries travelling down the leg side in this Test dropped from 32% to 17%.
This match was also the fullest he has bowled in any home Test – a key skill for an off-spinner in allowing them to drag a batter onto the front foot.
Previously he bowled 26% of his deliveries in the full region but that jumped to 41% against Zimbabwe.
“It’s scary to think about the start of his career considering what he had experience-wise before he made his Test debut,” Stokes added.
“It’s impossible for him not to get even better than what he is now.
“The guys that we’ve got working with him, with all the technical stuff with Jeets [England spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel].
“I know it’s an odd story to look at. I can understand why some people find it hard to believe.
“If he keeps putting in performances like he has done this week, and continues in the way his career has gone, hopefully one day it will properly make sense to everyone why we pick him.”

Nottingham virologist urges calm over West Nile virus
Nottingham virologist urges calm over West Nile virus

BBC News, Nottingham
Reuters
Prof Jonathan Ball believes climate change will spread tropical diseases north
A virologist has said mosquito-borne diseases are “likely” to increase in range after West Nile virus was detected in the *** for the first time.
The *** Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said fragments of the virus – which can sometimes make people seriously ill – had been found in wetland in Retford, Nottinghamshire.
Prof Jonathan Ball, director of the Centre for Global Virus Research at the University of Nottingham said climate change meant tropical viral diseases would become more established further north.
This summer, Gamston in Retford will be among a number of locations to undergo mosquito surveillance as part of a national project to understand mosquito activity across Britain.
‘We need to be aware’
The West Nile virus has two hosts, Prof Ball said, birds and mosquitoes.
“Occasionally, that virus can pass on to humans and cause disease,” he said.
“About two in 10 people who are infected can show signs of disease, which is fever, those kinds of things.
“But occasionally, about one in 150 people who become infected can show more severe disease.”
There have been no human cases of locally-acquired West Nile Virus in the *** to date.
Prof Ball said the discovery of West Nile in Nottinghamshire was not something the general public needed to be “too concerned” about.
“It is something we need to be aware of – it’s likely that these are going to increase in range,” he said.
“It’s just a general trend that lots of these viruses – knows as flaviviruses – these are viruses that circulate in mosquitoes and they’re general around the tropics.
“But because of global warming they’re increasing their range northwards and it does mean there is a risk that we’re going to see some of these tropical viral diseases become established further and further north.”
He added the best way to avoid the virus was to “avoid being bitten” by covering up and using insecticide.
The project in Gamston will see the *** Health Security Agency work with Bassetlaw District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council to increase surveillance on land along the River Idle.

Post Office offer amounts to just half of my claim, says Bates
Post Office offer amounts to just half of my claim, says Bates
Sir Alan Bates has accused the government of putting forward a “take it or leave it” offer of compensation amounting to less than half of his claim.
The former subpostmaster, who has campaigned for redress for victims of the Post Office scandal, said ministers were presiding over “quasi-kangaroo courts” and altering the “goal posts” on their judgements.
Writing in the Sunday Times, Sir Alan said: “Claims are, and have been, knocked back on the basis that legally you would not be able to make them, or that the parameters of the scheme do not extend to certain items.”
The Department for Business and Trade said: “Anyone unhappy with their offer can have their case reviewed by a panel of experts.”
Between 1999 and 2015, more than 900 subpostmasters were wrongly prosecuted after the faulty Horizon IT system indicated shortfalls in Post Office branch accounts.
Sir Alan led a group of 555 subpostmasters who took part in the landmark group legal action against the Post Office.
Their fight for justice was launched into the national consciousness last year by an ITV drama about the scandal, Mr Bates vs The Post Office.
The government went on to set up a specific compensation fund to ensure these subpostmasters received extra money to reflect the gravity of their situations, but progress has been described as slow and many are still waiting for a payout.
Under the Group Litigation Order (GLO) scheme, claimants can either receive £75,000 or seek their own settlement.
Sir Alan said promises that compensation schemes would be “non-legalistic” had turned out to be “worthless”.
He has also called for an independent body to be created to deliver compensation schemes for this and similar public sector scandals.
As of January, £128m had been paid under the GLO scheme, including interim payments, according to government data.
A Department for Business and Trade spokesman said: “We pay tribute to all the postmasters who’ve suffered from this scandal, including Sir Alan for his tireless campaign for justice, and we have quadrupled the total amount paid to postmasters since entering government.
“We recognise there will be an absence of evidence given the length of time which has passed, and we therefore aim to give the benefit of the doubt to postmasters as far as possible. Anyone unhappy with their offer can have their case reviewed by a panel of experts, which is independent of the government.”
