  2. Jack Grealish: Man City midfielder left out of squad for final game to spark uncertainty over future Jack Grealish: Man City midfielder left out of squad for final game to spark uncertainty over future Boss Guardiola raised eyebrows after Tuesday’s win over Bournemouth with a bombshell claim that he would “quit” City if he had such a large squad to manage next season. He then clarified in Friday’s news conference that it was a joke, but reiterated the message that he needs to work with a smaller group of players. City have 32 players listed on their official website so numerous departures are likely. But will Grealish be one of them? The forward made a major contribution in the club’s Treble success of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in 2022-23, but has struggled to replicate his best form since – and his days at the club now seem to be numbered after being left out on Sunday. Grealish has scored just four Premier League goals in the last two seasons – including a solitary strike this term – and has become accustomed to warming the bench. Signed for £100m from Aston Villa in 2021, he failed to play minutes at Wembley against Palace last Saturday, with Guardiola instead handing a surprise second-half debut to Argentine teenager Claudio Echeverri. Grealish’s lack of regular games for City has also affected his international ambitions, and he was “absolutely heartbroken” to be left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad last summer. It remains to be seen whether he will be selected for City’s Fifa Club World Cup squad, with an expanded tournament starting in the USA on 14 June. 5. Could Nvidia Stock Help You Retire a Millionaire? Could Nvidia Stock Help You Retire a Millionaire? Demand for Nvidia’s GPU chips looks to be nearly insatiable. New products are extending its reach in the AI infrastructure market. Nvidia just unveiled an open AI ecosystem that will immerse its products into even more AI projects. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) shares soared more than 600% in the last three years. But the stock hasn’t recorded any gains in 2025. Investors who are avoiding the stock because they feel the big gains are in the rearview mirror might be making a mistake. Nvidia has taken a breather so far this year amid concerns that sales of its artificial intelligence (AI) advanced chips, software, and supercomputers may have peaked. Yet all the evidence is to the contrary, and the reality is Nvidia should see strong sales growth for quite a while. The stock will likely move higher before those sales are in the books, however. With a seemingly insatiable appetite for its AI products, investors who buy Nvidia stock now may be putting themselves on track to retire millionaires. Image source: Getty Images. The most obvious people to ask about demand are the ones buying the product. Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) are still in high demand as its customers seek to expand AI compute capacity. The leaders of several big tech names reaffirmed plans to spend tens of billions of dollars on AI infrastructure this year. They include Meta Platforms and Microsoft. Blackstone is an investor in tech start-ups, so it has a unique perspective on the industry. Chief Operating Officer Jon Gray recently said in a CNBC interview he is seeing a “ton of demand” related to AI data center investments. Tesla CEO Elon Musk also told CNBC recently that the availability of the advanced semiconductor chips needed for AI to expand is currently the biggest limitation. Musk also said power generation and transformer capacity will become limiting factors in the near future. That bodes well for Nvidia’s cadence of delivering more efficient chips on an annual basis. Nvidia isn’t just relying on keeping its lead in supplying GPU chips, either. That’s the critical factor for those investing for retirement — a long runway of growth is key. In addition to updating its GPU technology offering annually, Nvidia just made an important announcement that can expand its market opportunities. CEO Jensen Huang unveiled a new strategy using Nvidia’s NVLink interconnect technology. NVLink is Nvidia’s proprietary interconnect technology for chips that enables high-bandwidth connections between Nvidia GPUs, central processing units (CPUs), and custom silicon. It introduced NVLink Fusion, which allows third-party CPUs and accelerators to pair with Nvidia GPUs in circuit boards and server racks. Story Continues NVLink Fusion will help cement Nvidia’s AI ecosystem dominance by allowing a more open model to expand the creation of AI architecture Nvidia currently controls. It helps ensure that the core of the system continues to run through Nvidia’s GPU platform. The open-system strategy lets Nvidia maintain control of data center infrastructure while letting competitors innovate around it. Plus, customers that are developing their own in-house strategies to save costs could instead choose to supply chips while still interconnecting with Nvidia infrastructure. First Nvidia beat the competition, now it’s inviting them to work with it. That’s the right long-term strategy for investors who are also thinking long term. It could accelerate the use of Nvidia platforms by more industries that might prefer a “plug-and-play” type option. If it wasn’t already, Nvidia has secured its position as the standard for scaling AI systems. Investors could do well to own shares now as its growing ecosystem will result in growing sales and profits for years to come. It might just be the best stock market option for those looking to retire as millionaires. 7. Coca-Cola unveils innovative ‘reverse vending machines’ that could be game-changers for consumers: ‘Set a precedent’ Coca-Cola unveils innovative ‘reverse vending machines’ that could be game-changers for consumers: ‘Set a precedent’ What if a vending machine could recycle your plastic bottles for you after you finish a drink? A new Coca-Cola India project brings that idea to life with easy-to-use “reverse vending machines” that help boost plastic collection efforts in East India, according to MediaBrief. All people have to do is insert empty Coca-Cola bottles, and the device will compact and store them. A mobile app also rewards users with points for every bottle deposit, which they can use to save money on various Coca-Cola products. Up to 800 bottles can fit in each RVM before they are collected and turned into clothes, bags, or more packaging, MediaBrief explained. That means the machines can help address the world’s plastic waste problem, especially since they incentivize consumer participation. It’s a badly needed positive step for Coca-Cola, which is the largest plastic polluter of any company in the world. Cleaning up the amount of plastic that litters the planet is crucial to keeping humans healthy and protecting the places all kinds of wildlife call home. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? Coca-Cola’s partner Biocrux India installed the RVMs and can remotely monitor how they perform. The goal is to increase awareness of the nation’s plastic problem and encourage people to act. Similar public engagement initiatives in Puri have succeeded in the past, including around major festivals, MediaBrief reported. Despite this promising collaboration to limit waste, Coca-Cola still has its work cut out to change the momentum of its global impact and must commit to doing more to limit plastic pollution. “By introducing reverse vending machines in Puri, we’re enabling people to take simple yet meaningful steps to make recycling part of everyday behaviour,” Rajesh Ayapilla, a senior director at Coca-Cola India and South West Asia, said, according to MediaBrief. Abhimanyu Behera, executive officer of Puri, added, “Initiatives like this not only enhance civic engagement but also set a precedent for other cities to follow.” Join our free newsletter for good news and useful tips, and don’t miss this cool list of easy ways to help yourself while helping the planet. 9. Bodies of five skiers found near Switzerland’s Zermatt resort Bodies of five skiers found near Switzerland’s Zermatt resort The bodies of five skiers have been found by rescuers near Switzerland’s luxury Zermatt resort. They were recovered a day after emergency services were alerted by a group of climbers ascending the Rimpfischhorn – a 4,199-metre peak in the Valais Alps – to several pairs of skis left unattended near the summit. Aerial and ground searches led to the discovery of the bodies below the summit on the Adler Glacier, Valais local police said in a statement on Sunday. The victims were found at varying altitudes on avalanche debris in high altitude areas near the Swiss-Italian border. Three bodies were located in one area and two more were discovered higher up on a narrow patch of snow, rescue service Air Zermatt said. A fifth pair of skis was later found during the search, confirming that the group had travelled as a party of five. Their identities have not yet been formally released. The public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident. In a separate incident on Friday night, Air Zermatt was also involved in a challenging mountain rescue on the Fiescherhörner, where four alpinists were stranded amid fog and high winds. The initial evacuation attempt had to be aborted due to the weather, but a second attempt just after midnight brought all four to safety. 10. State-wide reform to ADHD treatment enabling faster, cheaper diagnoses State-wide reform to ADHD treatment enabling faster, cheaper diagnoses Treatment for people living with ADHD – one of the most prevalent mental disorders in Australia – will become cheaper and more accessible under major reforms made by the NSW Government. The Minns Government has announced reforms to the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – a chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity and impulsiveness – which expands who is permitted to diagnose, manage and dispense ongoing prescriptions. Camera IconThe reforms will allow GPs to become accredited to diagnose and initiate medication to treat ADHD. NCA NewsWire / Valeriu Campan Credit: News Corp Australia Currently, people seeking treatment for ADHD must see a specialist, which can be expensive and involve long wait times of months or years. For many Australians, these barriers mean that treatment will not be accessed at all. The reforms announced on Monday will allow GPs to become accredited to diagnose and initiate medication, after completing additional training and education. There are two tiers of accredited training or registration, with each providing differing levels of capacity to diagnose, treat, prescribe or manage ADHD. Up to 1000 general practitioners will be supported to complete additional training to allow continuation prescriptions once a patient has been stabilised without the need of a formal arrangement. Currently, GPs can only get approval to prescribe stimulant medications under specific conditions. The additional training will be funded by NSW Health. With the number of Australians prescribed ADHD medication growing by almost 300 per cent in a decade, rising to 470,000 people in 2022-2023, the changes are expected to make a significant impact. Camera IconGPs will be supported to complete additional training to allow continuation prescriptions. NCA NewsWire/Joel Carrett Credit: News Corp Australia These reforms will be rolled out in a staged approach, with an initial focus on prescriptions for children as delays in treatment for this cohort can be detrimental to academic progress, employment and mental health. Premier Chris Minns said he hopes that by removing “red tape”, these reforms will “break the cycle” of delays plaguing ADHD treatment in the mental health system. “By safely training more GPs to treat and diagnose ADHD, we are hoping to break the cycle of people having to wait years for, what can be, a life-altering diagnosis,” he said. “Not getting diagnosed can have a particularly big impact on a child getting the most out of their life, whether that’s academically or socially. Camera IconNSW Premier Chris Minns said the reforms remove “red tape”. NewsWire / Monique Harmer Credit: News Corp Australia “These reforms help tilt the scales in favour of fairness – reducing the cost of getting treatment by hundreds of dollars, removing red tape for thousands of families and young people, and giving people the support they need to live happier, healthier lives.” RACGP Chairperson Dr Rebekah Hoffman said she has witnessed how challenging acquiring an ADHD diagnosis can be for individuals and families, and welcomes the changes. “As I travel across New South Wales, I hear from my colleagues about families in rural areas who travel more than seven hours to see a pediatrician, and of families in Sydney spending more than $5,000 on assessments and diagnosis for ADHD,” she said. Camera IconReforms will be rolled out in a staged approach, with an initial focus on prescriptions for children NCA NewsWire / Valeriu Campan Credit: News Corp Australia “This announcement will have life-changing impacts when it comes to accessing timely and affordable ADHD care for families across the state. “GPs in many parts of Australia, and around the world, are already diagnosing ADHD and prescribing medications. Our colleagues in Queensland, for example, have been safely prescribing ADHD medications since 2017 “ … In the years ahead, we look forward to working constructively with the Government to go even further and train up more GPs to diagnose and initiate medication so that all families can access the care and treatment they need.” The training will begin in the coming months and GPs are expected to be able to provide ongoing prescriptions to children by early 2026. Nvidia’s 18,000-Chip Deal With Saudi Arabia’s Humain Puts Middle East ‘Front Of The Line,’ Says Wedbush’s Dan Ives Nvidia’s 18,000-Chip Deal With Saudi Arabia’s Humain Puts Middle East ‘Front Of The Line,’ Says Wedbush’s Dan Ives Saudi Arabia is making a bold move to become a global leader in artificial intelligence. The kingdom’s new AI venture, Humain, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has secured a deal with Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) to receive 18,000 of its latest GB300 Blackwell chips, according to CNBC. This partnership aims to build a 500-megawatt AI data center, marking a significant step in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy and invest in cutting-edge technology, Fortune reports. Don’t Miss: The chip deal was announced on May 13 during the Saudi-U.S. Investment Forum in Riyadh, where Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praised Saudi Arabia’s long-term vision. “It is an incredible vision, indeed,” Huang said, referring to the country’s plan to build a national AI infrastructure, according to CNBC. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives told Fortune that the move places Saudi Arabia at “the front of the line” for global chip access, ahead of countries like China. He described the deal as a “watershed” moment in the ongoing global AI race. Humain’s data centers, powered by these chips, are expected to host Arabic-language large language models and multimodal AI tools capable of operating across voice, image, and text input. According to Reuters, the aim is to create regionally specific models that can support smart city infrastructure, autonomous logistics, and defense technology. Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — this is your last chance to become an investor for $0.80 per share. In addition to Nvidia, other U.S. tech companies are forming strategic partnerships with Humain. Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) announced Tuesday that it committed to a $10 billion agreement to provide 500 megawatts of AI compute infrastructure. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO) have also revealed on Tuesday that they signed separate deals to support Humain’s cloud and connectivity stack. Amazon Web Services announced on May 13 a $5 billion plan to establish a dedicated AI Zone in Saudi Arabia, which includes the deployment of Amazon Bedrock and AWS SageMaker, giving Saudi AI researchers a full stack of tools to scale model training and application development. Story Continues The partnerships come as the Trump administration rolls back Biden-era semiconductor export rules. The Commerce Department has ended the “AI diffusion” restriction, which previously required special licenses to export advanced AI chips. The policy shift is designed to favor trusted allies while keeping U.S.-made technology away from geopolitical rivals like China, Fortune says. See Also: Nancy Pelosi Invested $5 Million In An AI Company Last Year — Here’s How You Can Invest In Multiple Pre-IPO AI Startups With Just $1,000. Humain’s rise signals a strategic redirection in the global AI ecosystem. While U.S.-based clients like Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG, GOOGL)) and Amazon still dominate Nvidia’s distribution priorities, Fortune reports that Saudi Arabia now joins a short list of preferred global chip recipients, second only to the U.S. Meanwhile, China has been restricted to using Nvidia’s downgraded H20 chips, designed to comply with U.S. export controls but lacking the full performance of Blackwell processors. “China is the big loser,” Ives told Fortune, citing both the technology gap and increased trade complications as key disadvantages. 14. Whatever happened to Elon Musk? Tech boss drifts to margins of Trump world | Elon Musk Whatever happened to Elon Musk? Tech boss drifts to margins of Trump world | Elon Musk The Oval Office was crowded, with reporters cautioned not to collide with the Resolute Desk. Standing beside them, dressed in ******, was Elon Musk, billionaire ally of Donald Trump and head of his government efficiency drive. “Elon is from South Africa – I don’t want to get Elon involved,” the US president told his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, during a discussion about crime against white farmers. “He actually came here on a different subject: sending rockets to Mars. He likes that better.” Musk’s silence during the fraught hour-long meeting was a small but telling reminder of his shift in Trump’s orbit. He remains close to the president and welcome in the West Wing. He also paid a second visit to the Pentagon this week. But a relationship that many forecast would end in an explosive collision of egos seems instead to be undergoing an inexorable tapering off. On Monday, the Politico website published an analysis under the headline “Why has Elon Musk disappeared from the spotlight?” It found a sharp drop in the number of times that Trump posted about Musk on his Truth Social platform, from an average of four times a week in February and March to zero since the start of April. In February, Politico said, Trump’s fundraising operation invoked Musk in fundraising emails almost every day, with one message reading: “I love Elon Musk! The media wants to drive us apart, and it’s not working. He’s great.” But such mentions abruptly halted in early March, with the exception of one email in May advertising a “Gulf of America” hat that Musk had worn. In addition, White House officials no longer fill their social media feeds with Musk-related content. Reporters seldom ask about him at the White House press briefing. Members of Congress are giving his name a wide berth. Musk seems to be taking the hint. This week, the Tesla chief executive confirmed that he had reduced his role as the unofficial head of the so-called “department of government efficiency” (Doge) to just two days a week, and will also cut his political spending substantially – the latest public signal that he is shifting his attention back to his business empire amid growing investor concerns. It is a dramatic shift from the first weeks of Trump’s second term, when Musk attended the inauguration, was a constant presence at Mar-a-Lago, appeared alongside Trump in the Oval Office and gave a joint interview on Fox News full of mutual admiration. Doge dominated media headlines as it took a chainsaw to the federal bureaucracy. It seemed that Trump was dazzled by the world’s richest person, who sends rockets into space and spent at least $250m to support his election campaign last year. In March, the president even turned the White House south lawn into a temporary Tesla showroom, displaying five of the electric vehicles and promising to buy one himself. Elon Musk and his son X Æ leave the US Capitol in Washington DC on Wednesday. Photograph: Will Oliver/EPA But the polls told their own story. Last month, a national survey by Marquette University Law School found approval of how Musk is handling his work at Doge at 41% with disapproval at 58%. About 60% of those polled had an unfavourable view of Musk himself, compared with 38% who were favourably disposed to him. Ro Khanna, a Democratic member of Congress who has known Musk for more than a decade, commented: “As his numbers declined, so did Trump’s interest. Trump discards people when their ratings fall and it’s very transactional. It’s nothing more than an initial fascination and a sense of being discarded.” Khanna, whose congressional district sits in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, had predicted from the outset that Musk was not going to last more than four or five months: “I said he’s going to get frustrated, exhausted and Washington will win – not him – in terms of how the town works.” At that time, Khanna was hoping that Doge would make cuts at the Pentagon. Instead, it flouted the constitution to slash the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department of Education, the Internal Revenue Service and other targets. “I said there’s no way he’s going to get anywhere close to $2tn of cuts; he didn’t even get close to a trillion; it’s about $81bn. He learned the lesson that a lot of very successful business leaders learn, that democracy is much tougher than they imagine and doesn’t bend to their will,” Khanna said. Indeed, Musk continues to hit roadblocks. On Wednesday, the US Institute of Peace retook control of its headquarters after a federal judge said the firing of its board and employees by Doge was ********. On Thursday, a federal judge in San Francisco said Trump cannot restructure and downsize the US government without the consent of Congress and that she would probably extend her ruling blocking federal agencies from implementing mass layoffs. Even so, Doge has already enacted deep cuts to the workforce and spending and, in some cases, sought to shutter entire agencies, causing untold damage to the fabric of government. For example, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) “is not ready” for next month’s start of the hurricane season, according to an internal agency review reported by CNN. The disaster relief agency, which employs more than 20,000 workers, has lost roughly 30% of its full-time staff to layoffs and Doge buyouts. Khanna warned: “We’re going to be living with the consequences for years to come because unfortunately they’ve managed to totally destroy USAID, they’ve destroyed NIH [the National Institutes of Health], they’ve destroyed FDA [the Food and Drug Administration], they’ve destroyed EPA [the Environmental Protection Agency], they’ve hollowed out so much of the state department and it’s going to take a generation to rebuild. “I’m hoping that the damage will stop. We have to see what will continue but hopefully there’ll be no more sledgehammer to these institutions.” Even conservatives who believe in downsizing government share the concerns. Rick Tyler, a political strategist who has worked on Republican campaigns, said: “What they’re trying to do is make the government smaller, which I applaud, but they are not making it more efficient because there has been no vision, no plan to actually make the government operate with fewer people and less money. There is no redesign. This is just slash and burn.” Tesla, which is the major source of Musk’s wealth, has suffered significant brand damage and lost sales due to his political work, particularly with Trump. He has also expressed support for the far-right, anti-immigration AfD party in Germany. Tesla dealerships have become scenes of protest and vandalism in the US and beyond. It may be that Musk met his political Waterloo in Wisconsin. His spending of at least $3m helped make Wisconsin’s supreme court race the most expensive of its kind in US history. He even made a personal appearance in Green Bay the weekend before the election wearing a cheesehead hat – popular with fans of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers – and personally handed out cheques for $1m to supporters. Musk speaks at a town hall on 30 March in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He spent $3m on a judicial election his favoured candidate lost by 10 points. Photograph: Jeffrey Phelps/AP But the candidate he backed lost by 10 percentage points. Democrats had used his intervention to successfully mobilise voters in an election dubbed “People vs Musk”. This week, Musk told Bloomberg’s Qatar Economic Forum in Doha: “In terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future.” The Wisconsin Democratic party chair, Ben Wikler, told the Associated Press: “The people have won. The biggest funder in Republican politics is taking his toys and going home.” Evidently, Musk and his chainsaw have become a political liability for Republicans seeking re-election in next year’s midterms. Democrats in races across the country are expected to use Musk as a political boogeyman in attack ads on their opponents. Tyler observed: “The polling numbers, Trump suffering politically, which would hurt his party, which is going to hurt his agenda, caused enough strife that I’m sure he heard from enough members to say, could we just not talk about Elon Musk any more?” Wendy Schiller, a political science professor at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, added: “It was a trial balloon on how they would reduce federal employees. If it worked and people thought it was great, maybe they would keep going with or without Musk, but they used him as the front person for it and the punching bag. When it backfired, they cut him loose. Not surprising at all. “There is nobody that you can sincerely believe Donald Trump thinks is important to his popularity or his standing in a positive way because he believes he generates all that himself. And I don’t think he’s wrong about that. But if you become a liability, you’re gone pretty quickly.” Source link #happened #Elon #Musk #Tech #boss #drifts #margins #Trump #world #Elon #Musk Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  15. Strauss’ Blue Danube waltz is launching into space Strauss’ Blue Danube waltz is launching into space Johann Strauss’ Blue Danube will be beamed into the cosmos to mark the 200th anniversary of the waltz king’s birth. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra will perform the classical piece. The celestial send-off on May 31 — livestreamed with free public screenings in Vienna, Madrid and New York — also will celebrate the European Space Agency’s founding 50 years ago. Although the music could be converted into radio signals in real time, according to officials, ESA will relay a pre-recorded version from the orchestra’s rehearsal the day before to avoid technical issues. The radio signals will hurtle away at the speed of light, or a mind-blowing more than one billion km/h. That will put the music past the moon in 1.5 seconds, past Mars in 4.5 minutes, past Jupiter in 37 minutes and past Neptune in four hours. Within 23 hours, the signals will be as far from Earth as NASA’s Voyager 1, the world’s most distant spacecraft, at more than 24 billion kilometres in interstellar space. NASA also celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008 by transmitting a song directly into deep space: the Beatles’ Across the Universe. And last year, NASA beamed up Missy Elliott’s The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) toward Venus. Music has even flowed from another planet to Earth — courtesy of a NASA Mars rover. Flight controllers at California’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory sent a recording of will.i.am’s Reach for the Stars to Curiosity in 2012 and the rover relayed it back. These are all deep-space transmissions as opposed to the melodies streaming between NASA’s Mission Control and orbiting crews since the mid-1960s. Now it’s Strauss’ turn, after getting passed over for the Voyager Golden Records nearly a half-century ago. Launched in 1977, NASA’s twin Voyagers 1 and 2 each carry a gold-plated copper phonograph record, along with a stylus and playing instructions for anyone or anything out there. The records contain sounds and images of Earth as well as 90 minutes of music. The late astronomer Carl Sagan led the committee that chose Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Stravinsky pieces, along with modern and indigenous selections. Among those skipped was Johann Strauss II, whose Blue Danube graced Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi opus 2001: A Space Odyssey. The tourist board in Vienna, where Strauss was born on October 25, 1825, said it aims to correct this “cosmic mistake” by sending the “the most famous of all waltzes” to its destined home among the stars. ESA’s big radio antenna in Spain, part of the space agency’s deep-space network, will do the honours. “Music connects us all through time and space in a very particular way,” ESA’s director general Josef Aschbacher said. 17. Homeowners are feeling especially stressed about home repairs Homeowners are feeling especially stressed about home repairs 00:00 Speaker A Shares of Lowe’s lower after reporting better than expected earnings and growing sales from professionals offsetting weakness in the DIY consumer. Homeowners continue to spend less on big ticket items though amid broader economic uncertainty. ******’s 2025 state of home spending report found that 48% of homeowners are more stressed about home repairs than they were in January. Joining me now, we’ve got ****** Hicks, ****** co-founder. ******, we got to ask you first and foremost, where is a lot of the stress coming from for homeowners? 00:53 ****** Hicks I think quite honestly when it comes to taking care of your home, it’s for most of us our largest asset. And we tend to spend, you know, one to two percent of the value of the home on improvements and repairs each year. So it really comes down to kind of budgeting and understanding what needs to be done around your house and how to best invest those dollars. 01:24 Speaker A And so from what you’re hearing, are there massive delays in in some of the DIY projects that homeowners would typically be doing? 01:46 ****** Hicks Well we did run a pulse survey to update our state of home spending in April and saw that 70% of homeowners said they had delayed a project. But I think what you really need to understand here is what that, you know, actually means. We also found that they’re doing more maintenance which is very common, it’s a very common phenomena when we see an economic downturn or uncertainty. Because what they want to do is not be surprised. They don’t want to be surprised by spending, so they’re going to make sure they’re getting their air conditioner tuned up so it doesn’t go out on the hottest day of the year. Have the roof inspected so they don’t have a leak. So they become just much more conscientious about those day-to-day things. And they’re going to do less discretionary items, more non-discretionary. So maybe we’re not putting the swimming pool in this year, but we are still going to make sure that we’re maintaining that house. So you see some shifts going on there, and quite honestly some of those DIY projects might fall in that discretionary bucket that they might choose to hold off on. 03:03 Speaker A Yeah, we had a perfectly good blow-up pool at one point when we were going up. So ultimately just go stand next to a hose for a little bit. Yeah, exactly. So, as you think about some of the lower cost alternatives to full remodels, because those are some of the projects that homeowners will take on if they’re looking to maybe list their home within the next 12 months, what are you hearing on that front? What’s the pulse? 04:10 ****** Hicks Yeah, so a lot of times uh kitchens and bathrooms are always at the top of the renovation list. And you know, a lot of times people think are these tens of thousands of dollars of projects. Yes, they can be. Some can be very big projects, but there are a lot of things that you can do to make it even a more efficient uh project economical and get functionality. For example, in your kitchen, if you want a fresher look, consider updating the countertops. If you’re going to avoid updating the cabinets, that’s where the big money is and do not change the footprint of your kitchen if you can, because if you start moving plumbing and electrical, the cost starts to add up. Same kind of thing in the bathroom. Think about maybe changing out the flooring, updating a sink, but if you’re going to redo your whole shower, it’s going to be more expensive. 05:24 Speaker A And so how are the pros on the other side of this responding to what homeowners are ultimately signaling to them, the market, the the professionals that are also working on these projects? 05:48 ****** Hicks Absolutely. So the professionals are working with homeowners more, talking to them about alternatives. You know, I’ve I’ve just had our ****** uh Pro Council meeting the other day. We were talking a lot with pros about the different things that they see where they can kind of help homeowners make trade-offs and make good decisions about how to invest those dollars. Uh and you know, and and they’re looking for uh uh sorry, and they also are looking at ways that they can aggregate projects together. Uh so you know, if they offer both window cleaning and gutter cleaning, suggesting consumers get those done together be so that it’s one trip and it can be a more efficient economical job. 06:53 Speaker A What is the decision tree for whether or not you should actually be starting a new project right now? 07:04 ****** Hicks Well, I mean, first you need to think about your budget. Look at your budget, understand how much you have to spend. And also I always encourage homeowners to do a walk around your house and evaluate everything you see because you might choose to do the wrong project, and we don’t want people to do that. You know, so you want to start with structural problems, then go to mechanical things and then work your way to more cosmetic kind of more upgrade type items. So do that so that you know, like, hey, my refrigerators on its last leg. Uh you don’t go and put a new deck on and then realize come August that you need to buy a refrigerator and you feel the crunch. 08:05 Speaker A ******, great to see you. Thanks so much for taking the time as always. 08:12 ****** Hicks Thank you. Source link #Homeowners #feeling #stressed #home #repairs Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  19. Some fear excessive use of force will rise as the DOJ drops oversight Some fear excessive use of force will rise as the DOJ drops oversight People lay flowers at a memorial in George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States on April 21, 2021. Yasin Ozturk | Anadolu Agency | Getty Images The killing of George Floyd five years ago by a Minneapolis police officer ignited what many reform advocates hoped would be a national effort to end, or at least curb, excessive use of force. But the Trump administration’s decision this week to dismiss lawsuits and drop accountability agreements with several police departments could undo some of that momentum, proponents of federal oversight say. “Having a blueprint for reform is one thing, but ensuring objective oversight is a whole other thing,” said Michael Gennaco, a former federal prosecutor who has overseen use-of-force cases. The Department of Justice announced Wednesday that it would drop proposed consent decrees with Minneapolis and Louisville, Kentucky, and end investigations into police departments in Phoenix; Trenton, New Jersey; Memphis, Tennessee; Mount Vernon, New York; Oklahoma City; and the Louisiana State Police. The Minneapolis consent decree, a court-enforced improvement plan that follows a civil rights abuse investigation, was reached after the 2020 death of Floyd. Floyd was unarmed when police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes while he was handcuffed on the ground. The Louisville agreement was reached after the 2020 death of Breonna Taylor, who was shot by police officers while sitting unarmed in her Kentucky home. Both killings sparked coast-to-coast protests that consumed the final months of Trump’s first administration and ushered in a wave of investigations under U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in the Biden administration. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said in a statement Wednesday that the consent decrees were “overbroad,” “factually unjustified” and based on “an anti-police agenda.” But abandoning these agreements could have a chilling effect on efforts that are already underway in Baltimore, Cleveland and Ferguson, Missouri, where a white police officer killed Michael Brown, an unarmed ****** teenager, in 2014. That agreement required more training for police officers, policy changes to decrease the use of force and a more robust system for citizens to make complaints against officers. It also required that the mostly white police department do more to recruit people of color. “It is important to not overstate what consent decrees do,” said Jin Hee Lee with the Legal Defense Fund, referring to the power of federal courts to enforce orders. A Minneapolis Police officer rolls up caution tape at a crime scene in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Brandon Bell | Getty Images “They are very important and oftentimes necessary to force police departments to change their policies, to change their practices,” she added. “But consent decrees were never the end all, be all.” The Chicago Police Department, for example, entered into a consent decree in 2019 that is being managed by the state attorney general. As a result, the federal government’s announcement does not impact the reform efforts currently underway there. Consent decrees have a long history dating back to President Bill Clinton’s 1994 crime bill and are implemented after investigations into civil rights violations or unconstitutional practices. These investigations focus not on isolated instances but on policing cultures and policies that lead to the violations. In responding to the Trump administration’s announcement, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey told reporters his city will “comply with every sentence, of every paragraph, of the 169-page consent decree that we signed this year.” Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said his city is adopting a police reform agreement that will include many of the goals from its federal consent decree, like hiring an independent monitor to oversee the department’s progress. On the flip side, supporters of local control argue that communities are better equipped to manage their own law enforcement agencies. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, who refused to comply with Garland’s consent decree following a blistering 2024 report, said she would continue to pursue local reforms that serve her constituents’ best interests. She has argued that it would be irresponsible to sign a contract without first evaluating it and has questioned the Justice Department’s ability to improve local police forces. According to the 126-page report, which included data from 2016 through 2024, the Phoenix Police Department routinely committed “very significant and severe violations of federal law and the Constitution” and lacked accountability, supervision and training. Among the biggest concerns highlighted by the DOJ were racial discrimination during police encounters and reckless use of force. The Justice Department issued 36 recommendations, including improved use-of-force training and new policies for encounters with vulnerable populations. But Gallego and several council members opposed the agreement, calling the accusations unsubstantiated and others asking for a full review before adopting it. The city has since adopted a series of reforms aimed at addressing the DOJ’s findings. It implemented a new use-of-force policy, developed new emergency training materials and assembled a civilian review board. “We will continue to look for every opportunity to make sure we’re serving our residents in the best way possible,” Gallego said in a statement. “I said many times that we would adopt reforms and see them through, regardless of the DOJ investigation, and I meant it.” Consent decrees have had mixed results. In Los Angeles, which exited its 12-year agreement in 2013, the police department continues to face excessive-use allegations and lawsuits. Most recently, several students from the University of California, Los Angeles, sued the LAPD, alleging assault, battery and other violations by officers during campus protests last year. The students said in the lawsuit that they were shot by rubber bullets and subjected to unnecessary force at a pro-************ encampment. A spokesperson for the union representing police officers has called the allegations baseless and inflammatory. In Baltimore, where the police department entered into a consent decree following the 2015 killing of Freddie Gray, who died after suffering a spinal cord injury while in police custody, reform efforts remain ongoing. The force is now in the “assessment” phase of its agreement, according to a city dashboard. In December, the DOJ applauded its progress, prompting a partial termination of the agreement. 21. Nespresso’s pistachio vanilla coffee capsules are delicious over ice, and I can’t stop drinking them Nespresso’s pistachio vanilla coffee capsules are delicious over ice, and I can’t stop drinking them Pistachio is the hottest flavor of 2025, and if you’ve walked past a high street coffee shop recently, you’ll almost certainly have seen ads for green-tinted lattes in the window. The trend started last year, when pistachio-filled Dubai chocolate (initially created to satisfy pregnancy cravings) began appearing in social media videos, and now Nespresso has got in on the act with a vanilla and pistachio-flavored coffee pod. I spotted the green and cream-colored Nespresso Vertuo Vanilla Pistachio capsules on the Nespresso website a couple of weeks ago, and couldn’t resist adding a pack to my order. So what are they like, and can they compete with the likes of Starbucks? First, a word on serving. Each Vertuo pod produces a double shot of flavored espresso, and is intended to be enjoyed as a long drink over ice. I wouldn’t recommend drinking the shot straight – although it’s based on sweet arabica beans that would probably be delicious alone, the natural vanilla and pistachio flavor is pretty powerful, allowing it to withstand being diluted. You may like (Image credit: Future) I inserted a pod into my trusty Nespresso Vertuo Pop (one of the best Nespresso machines around if you have a small kitchen), attached the drip tray platform to raise my measuring cup to the appropriate height, locked the lid and hit the brew button. A few seconds later, I had a sweet-smelling double espresso ready to be poured over a generous helping of ice. I’m fond of an iced latte, so I finished my drink with cold foam made using the De’Longhi Primadonna Aromatic, which I’m currently testing. If you don’t have a milk frother for your Nespresso machine, take a look at the Nespresso Aeroccino 4, which is a compact standalone device that can produce hot or cold foam using dairy or plant-based milk. (Image credit: Future) I tried the Vanilla Pistachio Nespresso coffee as an iced caffe latte and an iced latte macchiato. Overall, I’d recommend the first option, as the potent flavor benefits from being combined thoroughly with the milk. There’s no need to worry about watering down the taste. When you get the balance right, the result is one of the tastiest Nespresso drinks I’ve tried so far. Sometimes flavored coffees can have a bitter or artificial-tasting edge, but that’s not the case here. With plenty of ice and cold milk, you get a refreshing and well-rounded flavor that’s tasty but not excessively sweet. If you feel like something more dessert-like, Nespresso has a recipe for an iced pistachio vanilla oat latte using the capsules, which includes marshmallows for extra indulgence. (Image credit: Future) It’s delicious, but I also picked up a pack of Nespresso’s Coconut Vanilla pods with my order, so I’m interested to see how the two compare. These are also intended to be served cold over ice, but unlike the pistachio pods, they brew a long ****** coffee to be savored like cold brew. Will they be as refreshing? I’ll find out soon. Dave Ramsey took Tennessee man’s side in money fight with wife — until Ramsey found out she has Stage 4 ******* Dave Ramsey took Tennessee man’s side in money fight with wife — until Ramsey found out she has Stage 4 ******* During a recent episode of The Ramsey Show, Adam, from Knoxville, Tennessee, shared his ongoing struggles to maintain a household budget with his wife, who is battling Stage 4 *******. Adam began by explaining that “There’s a fight every time we try to set a budget.” He added, “She feels like I just make the budget and then go over it with her, but she always feels like I just make it and don’t give her any input,” highlighting the tension that financial planning has introduced into their relationship. Adam explained that budgeting is a new priority for them, and he identified himself as the more organized partner — or “nerd,” as finance expert Dave Ramsey put it. In response, Ramsey emphasized the importance of making the budget a joint effort. He explained that he teaches the “nerds” creating budgets to work with their “free spirit” partners by involving their partners in the process and getting them to contribute. “[You must let] the free spirit … change some things in your perfect little budget. Otherwise, it’s not our budget, it’s your budget,” he told Adam. He initially believed that’s what Adam’s partner was griping about. However, Adam went on to explain that, despite his wife’s health challenges with Stage 4 ******* and reliance on disability income, he wanted her to contribute financially. He even suggested side work to bring in extra money, so they could stay on track to be consumer debt-free within 12-18 months. This is where things shifted for Ramsey. He responded with concern for Adam’s wife, criticizing his insistence on his wife’s financial contribution during her illness, stating, “I absolutely apologize to your wife for calling her a whiner in Stage 4 *******, and I’ve discovered that you are the whiner.” Ramsey emphasized the need for empathy and understanding, advising Adam to prioritize his wife’s health and well-being over financial contributions. Ramsey also said it’s fair for Adam to do a better job of drawing her in to get agreement on the budget. However, he understood her unwillingness to participate so far, given that Adam’s proposed solution was “unreasonable.” Ramsey recommended the couple engage in open communication and seek guidance from professionals. “You guys need to sit down with someone and start working on your relational skills,” he advised. He also stressed the importance of Adam drawing his wife into budgeting conversations in a supportive manner, to create a safe space for productive dialogue and a healthy future together. The truth is, they’re not alone — financial disagreements are a common source of conflict in relationships. A study found that financial worries significantly predict conflict for both spouses in many coupled households. Husbands with financial concerns were nine times more likely to report financial conflict, while wives with the same worries were nearly 13 times more likely to report such conflict. To navigate financial challenges, couples are encouraged to: Engage in open dialogue. Regular, honest conversations about finances can help partners understand each other’s perspectives and reduce misunderstandings. Seek professional guidance. Financial counselors and therapists can provide tools and strategies to manage financial stress and improve relationship dynamics. Adopt collaborative budgeting. Creating a budget together ensures that both partners have input and buy-in, fostering a sense of shared responsibility. This article provides information only and should not be construed as advice. Suspect released from psychiatric care one day before Hamburg attack Suspect released from psychiatric care one day before Hamburg attack The suspect in the recent knife attack at Hamburg’s central train station was released from a psychiatric hospital on the day prior to the stabbing, officials said on Sunday. The 39-year-old woman had been treated in a psychiatric institution in the northern ******* city of Cuxhaven for three weeks after she was found in a state of helplessness in early May, a spokesman for the Health Ministry in the state of Lower Saxony said. According to the clinic, the woman was released because there were no medical findings at the time of her discharge to justify further treatment. Authorities did not comment on the nature of her illness, citing privacy concerns and medical confidentiality.
