Americans remember George Floyd on fifth anniversary of his death
Americans remember George Floyd on fifth anniversary of his death
Reuters
Family members of George Floyd gathered this weekend as friends and community members paid their respects at a memorial site for Floyd
Americans across the country are remembering George Floyd five years after he was killed by police, with special gatherings in the city where he grew up and the one where he died.
The ******* of Floyd, a ****** man, in Minneapolis by police officer Derek Chauvin led to nationwide protests against racism and police brutality.
On Sunday, Floyd’s family gathered in their hometown of Houston near Floyd’s gravesite for an event led by the Rev. Al Sharpton, while Minneapolis held several commemorations.
What many hailed as a national “reckoning” with racism after Floyd’s death, though, seems to be fading as President Donald Trump starts to roll back police reforms in Minneapolis and other cities.
In Minneapolis, community members planned a morning church service, a candlelight vigil and an evening gospel concert on Sunday to remember Floyd.
The events were a part of the annual Rise and Remember Festival taking place in George Floyd Square, the intersection where Floyd was murdered and which has since been named to honour him.
“Now is the time for the people to rise up and continue the good work we started,” Angela Harrelson, Floyd’s aunt and co-chair of the Rise and Remember nonprofit, said in a statement about the festival.
Getty Images
Community members and Floyd’s relatives gathered around a mural at George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Friday.
In Houston, where Floyd grew up and where he is buried, local organisations planned poetry sessions, musical performances and speeches by local pastors.
Floyd was murdered in 2020 during a police arrest in Minneapolis when Chauvin, a white police officer, stood on his neck for more than nine minutes.
The killing – captured on a bystander’s phone camera – sparked global outrage and a wave of demonstrations against racial injustice and police use of force.
Chauvin has been serving a 22-year prison sentence after he was convicted of murdering the 46-year-old. Other officers were convicted for failing to intervene in the killing.
In a post on X, Rev Sharpton said Floyd’s death had “forced a long overdue reckoning with systemic racism and galvanized millions to take to the streets in protest”.
“The conviction of the officer responsible was a rare step toward justice, but our work is far from over,” he said.
In the wake of Floyd’s death, under former President Joe Biden, the justice department opened civil investigations into several local law enforcement agencies, including Minneapolis, Louisville, Phoenix and Lexington, Mississippi, where investigators found evidence of systemic police misconduct.
Reuters
Floyd’s death sparked a nationwide reckoning on police brutality toward ****** people in the US in 2020
The department reached agreements with both the Louisville and Minneapolis police departments that included oversight measures like enhanced training, accountability, and improved data collection of police activity.
But last Wednesday, the Trump administration said those findings relied on “flawed methodologies and incomplete data”.
Administration officials said the agreement were “handcuffing” local police departments.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, though, said this week that his city would still “comply with every sentence, of every paragraph, of the 169-page consent decree that we signed this year”.
Since returning to office, Trump has also taken aim at Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI) measures intended to reduce racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination. Early in his tenure, Trump signed an executive order to eliminate DEI policies in the federal government, some of which were the result of protests during what is often called “****** Lives Matter Summer”, held after the deaths of Floyd and others,
Critics including Trump say such programmes can themselves be discriminatory. Addressing West Point on Saturday, he said that in ending DEI in the military the administration was “getting rid of the distractions” and “focusing our military on its core mission”.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Washington, Muriel Bowser, removed ****** Lives Matter Plaza, a strip of road that was emblazoned with the phrase near the White House. This week, a famous mural of Floyd in Houston was destroyed as part of a building demolition, as well, according to Houston Public Media.
Recent surveys suggest Americans believe there have been few improvements for the lives of ****** people in the US five years after Floyd’s passing, including a May survey from Pew Research Center in which 72% of participants said there had been no meaningful changes.
The number of Americans expressing support for the ****** Lives Matter movement has also fallen by 15% since June 2020, the same survey suggests.

Broncos return to NRL spotlight as O’Brien fights on
Broncos return to NRL spotlight as O’Brien fights on
KEY STORYLINES TO WATCH FOR IN ROUND 12 OF THE NRL SEASON
MANLY CLASH SHAPES AS MAKE-OR-BREAK WEEK FOR MAGUIRE
Brisbane return to action against Manly on Saturday, when a loss would ramp up pressure on the misfiring Broncos and place more scrutiny on Michael Maguire’s training methods. Brisbane haven’t played since their humbling loss to the Dragons, which came hot on the heels of the Marty Taupau Instagram saga.
ARE RAIDERS THE REAL DEAL?
Canberra have now beaten fellow top-four hopefuls Melbourne and Cronulla along with the Warriors, who they knocked over in New Zealand on Sunday. Ricky Stuart’s men were tipped as wooden spoon contenders by some experts, but can ram home their potential by knocking over the Roosters on Sunday.
CAN PARRA PUT ANOTHER NAIL IN PENRITH’S COFFIN?
Parramatta have a golden opportunity to kick bitter rivals Penrith while they’re down on Saturday. The Eels are riding high after beating Manly, while the Panthers slumped to the bottom of the ladder with a heavy defeat to Newcastle.
OLD CONCERNS FOR TOOTHLESS SHARKS
Cronulla might be on the bye this week, but their lifeless performance against an undermanned Roosters outfit on Saturday will reignite questions about their premiership credentials. Other sides would have buried the Roosters, but the Sharks looked lost and barely threw a punch.
KNIGHTS LOOK TO SLAY DRAGONS
The flame of Newcastle’s season – and Adam O’Brien’s coaching career – is flickering after their win over Penrith, but can the Knights make it two straight against St George Illawarra? The Dragons have been erratic all season, and the trip to Kogarah shapes as a chance for another scalp.

After firing Mark Johnson, News 5 Cleveland adds meteorologist Frank Marzullo
Weeks after firing meteorologist Mark Johnson, Beacon Journal news partner News 5 Cleveland (WEWS) is adding a member to its weather team.
Frank Marzullo, a former meteorologist at Fox19 in Cincinnati, announced on his Facebook page that he was taking a part-time job at WEWS.
Marzullo is originally from Cleveland.
“Yes, I am geeking out just a bit, but with time on my hands, while I wait for my next Cincinnati move, this is a perfect situation for me to say, I worked at Ohio’s first television station,” Marzullo said in his Facebook post.
He said that starting in June he will work a few days at a week at News 5 Cleveland. He has called weather in Cincinnati since 2007 before leaving Fox19 in February to pursue other opportunities.
Johnson was fired by WEWS on May 9 with the public being notified of the move via a news story that offered little explanation.
“We want our audiences to know that News 5 and its parent company, Scripps, take protecting our audiences’ trust very seriously by requiring our employees to adhere to the highest ethical standards. We cannot provide further details, as this is a personnel matter,” station Vice President and General Manager Steve Weinstein said in the news story.
Johnson’s attorney Daniel Levin said the firing was “unfounded.” Johnson has continued to post to his own Facebook page since being let go.

Reitan wins Soudal playoff for first European title
Reitan wins Soudal playoff for first European title
Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan has captured his first European tour title after making a birdie at the second playoff hole to win the Soudal Open at the expense of Ewen Ferguson and Darius van Driel.
Going out early in Sunday’s final round at the Rinkven International course in Antwerp, the No. 278-ranked Reitan shot a nine-under 62 to post the clubhouse target at 13 under.
Van Driel, ranked No.331, shot 67 to join Reitan in the lead but the No.186-ranked Ferguson looked like taking his fourth European tour title as he went down the last with a one-stroke lead.
However, his par putt lipped out to push him into a three-way playoff, which took place on the 18th.
The trio all made par the first time but Reitan rolled in a birdie putt from 15 feet for the win after Ferguson and Van Driel had again made par.
Australia’s Jason Scrivener signed off with a 71 to finish three under, 10 shots adrift of the leaders.

Teenager in critical condition after a mother and three of her children die in London fire
Teenager in critical condition after a mother and three of her children die in London fire
A teenage girl injured in a fire that killed a mother and three of her children in north-west London on Saturday is in a critical condition in hospital, police have said, as officers continue to question a man suspected of their murders.
A 43-year-old woman, a 15-year-old girl and two boys aged eight and four died at the scene of the fire which gutted two homes in the Stonebridge area of Brent in the early hours of Saturday.
A 13-year-old girl from the same family remains in critical condition, the Metropolitan police said on Sunday afternoon. The force said a 71-year-old woman from the same family who was also injured in the fire had been discharged from hospital.
A 41-year-old man who was arrested outside the house on Saturday morning remained in custody on Sunday afternoon.
Bunches of flowers and a blue teddy bear were left near to the homes as fire crews wearing helmets and respiratory equipment built scaffolding against the burnt out buildings.
Neighbours said the family are of Pakistani origin and had lived on Tillett Close for years.
Firefighters said the mother and one of her children were rescued from the second floor butpronounced dead by air ambulance crews.
The other two children who were declared dead were found inside the property as crews tackled the fire, London fire brigade said.
Cecilia Marquis, 60, a neighbour, said she was “stunned by the devastation” of the fire.
Marquis, who is a caterer at Brentford FC and witnessed the fire, said: “This will leave a devastating impact.”
In a statement on Saturday, Supt Steve Allen, from the Met’s local policing team in north-west London, said detectives were leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.
“Despite the efforts of the emergency services, I can confirm a woman and three of her children died at the scene,” Allen said.
“The wider family have been informed, and officers will continue to support them at this incredibly difficult time.
“I recognise the significant impact this incident has had on the community.”

Venezuelans vote, as opposition calls for poll boycott
Venezuelans vote, as opposition calls for poll boycott
Voting has opened for parliamentary elections in Venezuela, as opposition parties called for a boycott following mass arrests.
Venezuelans are choosing MPs, governors and other officials on Sunday.
The poll is being conducted against a backdrop of heightened government repression and opposition calls to boycott the election.
The election is the first to allow broad voter participation since last year’s presidential contest, which President Nicolás Maduro claimed to have won despite credible evidence to the contrary.
It is taking place two days after the government detained dozens of people, including a prominent opposition leader, and linked them to an alleged plot to hinder the vote.
In the first hours after polls opened, members of the military outnumbered voters in some voting centres in the capital, Caracas.
No lines formed outside the centres, including the country’s largest — a stark contrast with the hundreds of people gathered around the same time for the July 28 presidential election.
“I’m not going to vote,” said truck driver Carlos León, 41, standing near a desolate polling station in Caracas.
“I don’t believe in the (electoral authority). I don’t think they’ll respect the vote. Nobody forgets what happened in the presidential elections. It’s sad, but it’s true.”
Voter participation, in the eyes of the opposition, legitimises Maduro’s claim to power and his government’s repressive apparatus, which after the July presidential election detained more than 2000 people including protesters, poll workers, political activists and minors, to quash dissent.
Meanwhile, the ruling party is already touting overwhelming victory across the country, just as it has done in previous regional elections regardless of opposition participation.
A nationwide poll conducted between April 29 and May 4 by the Venezuela-based research firm Delphos showed that only 15.9 per cent of voters expressed a high probability of voting on Sunday.
Of those, 74.2 per cent said they would vote for the candidates of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela and its allies, while 13.8 per cent said they would vote for contenders associated with two opposition leaders who are not boycotting the elections.
“I think it’s absolutely despicable,” opposition operative Humberto Villalobos said on Saturday, referring to the election participation of some opposition members.
“We’re facing the most brutal repression in recent years in the country. (The vote) is a comedy, a parody.”
Voters trickled into polling places in an opposition stronghold in Caracas.
Some ignored the boycott calls based on the belief in their civic duty, while others saw the election as a chance to keep their local government under opposition control.
“I’m defending my municipality,” said Edith, the owner of a bankrupt family business who declined to give her last name out of fear of government repression.
“I’m still angry with what happened in July, but I have to defend it.”
Other voters cast ballots out of fear of losing their government jobs or food and other state-controlled benefits.
“Most of my friends aren’t going to vote, not even a blank vote,” state employee Miguel Otero, 69, said.
“But we must comply. We have to send the photo (saying), ‘I’m here at the polling station now.'”

Spain hosts European, Arab nations to pressure Israel on Gaza
Spain hosts European, Arab nations to pressure Israel on Gaza
The international community should look to sanction Israel to stop the war in Gaza, Spain’s foreign minister said, as European and Arab nations gathered in Madrid on Sunday to urge a halt to its offensive.
Some of Israel’s longstanding allies have added their voices to growing international pressure after it expanded military operations against Gaza’s ****** rulers, whose 2023 attack on Israel sparked the devastating war.
A two-month aid blockade has worsened shortages of food, water, fuel and medicine in the ************ territory, stoking fears of famine.
Aid organisations say the trickle of supplies Israel has recently allowed to enter falls far short of needs.
The talks in Madrid aim to stop Israel’s “inhumane” and “senseless” war in Gaza, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares told reporters before the gathering opened.
Humanitarian aid must enter Gaza “massively, without conditions and without limits, and not controlled by Israel”, he added, describing the Strip as humanity’s “open wound”.
“Silence in these moments is complicity in this massacre… that is why we are meeting,” said Albares.
Representatives from European countries including France, Britain, Germany and Italy are joining envoys from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Morocco, the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
Norway, Iceland, Ireland and Slovenia, who like Spain have already recognised a ************ state, are also taking part alongside Brazil.
– Sanctions on the table –
After the European Union decided this week to review its cooperation deal with Israel, Albares told reporters Spain would request its “immediate suspension”.
Spain would also urge partners to impose an arms embargo on Israel and “not rule out any” individual sanctions against those “who want to ruin the two-state solution forever”, he added.
Sunday’s meeting will also promote a two-state solution to the Israeli-************ conflict.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is an outspoken critic of the war. He has said his country will back draft resolutions at the United Nations aimed at ramping up aid access to Gaza and holding Israel to account over its international humanitarian obligations.
Madrid’s attempt to rally a wider consensus on the war comes a year after it broke with some European allies by recognising a ************ state, infuriating Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
******’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people, mainly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
************ militants also took 251 hostages, 57 of whom remain in Gaza including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed almost 54,000 people, mostly civilians, according to ******-run Gaza’s health ministry.

What’s coming up this week
What’s coming up this week
BBC Studios/Disney/Bad Wolf/Getty Images
This week, it’s the finale of the latest Doctor Who series, with fans treated to an extra-special-length episode.
But that’s not all the week has in store.
It’s also The Last of Us finale, K-pop boyband Seventeen have a new album out, and new game Elden Ring Nightrein is being released.
Read on for what’s coming up this week…
Whovians get ready for the grand finale
The section contains spoilers for Wish World, the penultimate episode of Doctor Who
BBC Studios/Disney/Bad Wolf
By Lizo Mzimba, entertainment correspondent
Ncuti Gatwa’s second series as the Doctor in Doctor Who reaches its climax on Saturday with episode eight – The Reality War.
The previous episode Wish World ended on a cliff hanger with the Doctor plunging to earth, as Wish World tore itself apart.
The finale, The Reality War, is an extra long episode that clocks in at more than an hour. Fans will be desperate to find out how the Doctor survives. And whether evil Time Lady the Rani will succeed in finding the huge figure from Doctor Who’s past that she’s searching for deep within the Underverse.
Viewers will also be keen to discover whether the episode will shed light on the future of its star and indeed of the show itself.
For months there’s been media talk that Ncuti Gatwa might be leaving the show. Doctor Who is no stranger to such speculation. In the past, rumours abut the sci-fi drama have ranged from being close to spot on to utter fabrication.
As for the show itself, six months ago showrunner Russell T Davies said that no decision would be made on commissioning series 3 until after series 2 had been broadcast.
With Doctor Who being co-produced with Disney+, one of the factors will be whether the BBC and the streamer decide to renew that arrangement, and what alternatives could be explored if they decide not to. And those kind of discussions take a significant amount of time.
The Reality War is on BBC One (Disney+ internationally) on Saturday.
The Last Of Us finale
This section contains spoilers for The Last Of Us, season 2
The first season of The Last of Us was haunting, terrifying, and moving in equal measure.
So there was a lot to live up to when season two kicked off – but it has not disappointed.
The TV adaptation of the hit video game stars Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal as lead characters Ellie and Joel.
But early on in the new season, Joel was brutally killed. In doing so, showrunners chose to remain faithful to the game – but I’ve still not fully recovered from the trauma of it all.
Thankfully for Pascal fans, the latest episode treated us to more scenes with the actor as it went into flashback mode.
For me, this demonstrated once again why this series is so excellent – it jumps from the terror of dodging zombies and ruthless militia to poignant, heart-wrenching moments, in a way you can never quite tell what’s coming next.
All this to say, the season has been building up to one heck of a final episode. *** viewers can watch it on Sky this Monday.
Happy Burstday, SeventeenPLEDIS Entertainment
On Monday, K-pop boyband Seventeen are turning 10 years old, and they’re celebrating by releasing a long-awaited new album.
Called Happy Burstday, it features 16 new tracks including three group songs and 13 solo songs and is their first full-length album in nearly three years.
Seventeen, which boasts a whopping 13 members, has had a remarkable 12 months, including making history as the first K-pop act on Glastonbury’s main stage last summer.
Unlike most Korean pop acts, they don’t do collaborations – and they also write and produce their own material.
Not much information has been provided about the new album yet, but a teaser video on the band’s social media channels revealed a cake with candles spelling out ‘Happy Birthday’, before transforming into the title, ‘Happy Burstday’.
“New tour, new unit single album, new Seventeen content… and more to come,” it promised fans, with press notes suggesting the band is ready to “embrace a fearless new era” as they enter their second decade.
Elden Ring’s developers choose hard mode
By Tom Richardson, Newsbeat reporter
After taking players out of their comfort zones for years, developer FromSoftware is getting out of its own.
The Japanese studio – famous for its incredibly challenging single-player titles such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne – is turning its hand to online multiplayer.
Elden Ring Nightreign, launching on PS5, Xbox and PC from Friday, drops squads of players into an ever-shifting landscape where they must survive for three days and nights against waves of enemies and hulking bosses.
A follow-up (of sorts) to smash-hit Elden Ring, it swaps the sprawling RPG’s giant map and methodical gameplay for fast-paced, three-player action.
There’s little doubt that the developers – masters of meticulously designed combat systems – will have effectively tweaked its trusted formula to fit the new mould.
But drawing players away from multiplayer behemoths like Fortnite and Call of Duty has proved, for others at least, to be a challenge more fiendish than even FromSoftware could dream up.

Scottish drivers ‘used as cash cow’ while fly-tippers escape fines
Scottish drivers ‘used as cash cow’ while fly-tippers escape fines
Scotland’s councils have hit drivers with more than £25 million of parking fines while “effectively legalising” dog fouling and littering, it has been alleged.
Figures obtained from the country’s local authorities showed they had issued more than 600,000 parking fines, worth a total of £25.1 million, in the 2023-24 financial year.
But over the same *******, only 273 dog owners were fined for failing to clean up after their pets, with the penalties issued totalling £9,700 across the whole of Scotland.
Fewer than 2,000 people were fined for littering, with half of Scotland’s 32 councils issuing no penalties at all. Two local authorities – Glasgow and North Lanarkshire – were responsible for the vast majority of the £78,580 of fines issued across Scotland.
Overall, nearly £2,600 of parking fines were issued for every £1 of penalties for dog fouling, and around £320 for every £1 penalty for littering.
Stephen Kerr, a Tory MSP who obtained the figures, said they showed that most local authorities had “effectively legalised” littering and dog fouling.
He added councils were “all too eager to take part in the SNP’s war on motorists” by issuing 605,512 parking fines in a single year.
Local authorities insisted they were taking dog fouling and littering seriously, but noted that they were “observable offences” that required witnesses for a fixed penalty notice (FPN) to be issued.
The data were published after they imposed Scotland’s largest council tax rises for 20 years, with the average household facing a 9.6 per cent rise.
However, auditors have said they are still facing a £647 million ****** hole in their finances this year, thanks to public sector salary demands, the rise in employers’ National Insurance contributions and “intensifying service demands”.
A report issued last week said they have attempted to compensate the shortfall by introducing more charges, hiking council tax and drawing on reserves.
But Mr Kerr said councils were not generating much money from dog fouling fines, despite being responsible for issuing them since 2002.
He said: “This data is absolutely shocking – it’s now clear that most councils have effectively legalised littering and dog fouling.
“While they’re happy to hike council tax by up to 15 per cent on hardworking Scots, they seem completely unwilling to raise a penny from those actually responsible for polluting our communities.”
He added: “In the SNP’s Scotland, it’s apparently worse to overstay your parking by a few minutes than to leave litter or dog mess on the pavement.”
Mr Kerr questioned why other councils were not following the lead of Glasgow and North Lanarkshire councils, which were responsible for 88 per cent of the littering fines issued across Scotland’s councils in between 2023 and 2024.
Scots face a 15 per cent council tax rise while councils are ‘unwilling to raise a penny’ from litter louts, says Stephen Kerr – Duncan McGlynn
Glasgow issued 1,207 fines worth £48,080 and North Lanarkshire 525 penalities worth £20,880. However, the other 30 local authorities across Scotland issued only 239 fines to litter louts, generating £9,620 in revenue.
Aberdeen, Highland, Perth and Kinross and Scottish Borders councils were among the 16 to issue no littering fines at all during the year.
Glasgow city council was also responsible for the most dog fouling fines, issuing 81 penalties worth £3,340 collectively. Fife council was second, issuing 64 fines worth £1,360. However, 13 local authorities did not fine anyone for dog fouling and eight others issued five penalties or fewer.
Edinburgh city council reaped the greatest revenue from parking fines, with 174,033 penalties issued worth more than £8.1 million. Glasgow issued even more fines, receiving more than £6.3 million from issuing drivers 184,957 penalties in the city.
Among the other councils to issue more than £1 million of parking fines were Aberdeen, which hit motorists with nearly £1.5 million of penalties, and Dundee, which collected nearly £1.3 million.
Eight local authorities issued no parking fines as they rely on Police Scotland to issue penalties. The figures also did not include revenue from low-emission zones (LEZs), which operate in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
It emerged at the weekend that Glasgow’s **** has generated more than £1.7 million in fines from the drivers of cars that did not comply with its emissions standards, since it was introduced two years ago.
An Aberdeen city council spokeswoman said: “City wardens have been given support to help tackle dog fouling and littering following calls from citizens for increased action against offenders.
“Aberdeen city council entered into an agreement with National Enforcement Solutions, which empowers them to issue fixed penalty notices to those littering or not picking up their dog mess.”
Dawn Jamie, Fife Council’s safety communities manager, said: “Dog fouling and littering are observable offences, so to be able to issue a fixed penalty notice we have to witness the act taking place or have members of the public willing to give a formal statement to enable us to take any action.
“For dog fouling we also need to know the identity of the individual in charge of the dog at the time the offence takes place to be able to issue a fixed penalty.”
Glasgow and Edinburgh city councils and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities did not respond to requests for comment. The Scottish Government was approached for comment.
