According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple is going to introduce a major interface refresh for watchOS 12 and tvOS 19 – as well as iOS 19 and macOS 16 – which is partly inspired by the look of the visionOS software on the Apple Vision Pro. While iOS 19 and macOS 16 are likely to attract more of the headlines, Gurman already told us back in March that these operating systems were getting an overhaul in terms of their design. Now Apple Watches and Apple TVs have been added to the list. You may like The new look for Apple’s software is apparently known as ‘Solarium’ internally, referencing those glass rooms that let in lots of sunlight, and it’s said to be “slicker and more modern” in terms of its appearance than the current software. A ‘widely felt’ overhaul WWDC 2025 is on the way (Image credit: Apple) We don’t get much in the way of detail here, and Gurman hasn’t provided any screenshots of what the software interface updates might look like, but it’s fair to say that the visionOS platform does have a clean and elegant look that works well. Even if the Apple Vision Pro hasn’t exactly been breaking any sales records, its software is intuitive and user-friendly, and apparently Apple is keen to extend the look across all of its other devices throughout the rest of the year. The company usually sticks to the same schedule every 12 months: a grand unveiling at WWDC, followed by several months of beta testing before the software is pushed out to everyone (usually in September for iOS and watchOS). The investment sage, who is turning 95 years old in August, is handing over the reins after a legendary six-decade run at the conglomerate. Its annual meetings, known as “Woodstock for Capitalists,” is a chance for Buffett to share his views on markets, investing and life in general. This year, he made headlines by opining on global trade policy, the market’s recent volatility and much more. For Buffett admirers reminiscing at next year’s bittersweet gathering, here are some highlights from the 2025 meeting that might have gone overlooked. Real estate is harder than stocks On the topic of real estate, Buffett admitted he’s not a huge fan, especially when compared to equities. He believes that the stock market offers more opportunities and greater ease of execution, unlike real estate, which involves lengthy negotiations, many complexities and is notoriously difficult to buy and sell. “In respect to real estate, it’s so much harder than stocks in terms of negotiation of deals, time spent, the involvement of multiple parties in the ownership, usually,” Buffett said. “When you walk down to the New York Stock Exchange you can do billions of dollars worth of business totally anonymous and you can do it in five minutes, and the trades are complete when they’re complete.” Buffett revealed that the late Charlie Munger, his longtime business partner, enjoyed real estate transactions, and did a fair number of them in the last five years of his life. Finding Japanese investments in a handbook Buffett first unveiled investments in five Japanese trading companies on his 90th birthday in August 2020. He has since increased those holdings in Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, Itochu and Marubeni to about 10%, saying Berkshire intends to hold on to them for 50 years or more. One little-known fact he revealed at the annual meeting was that he discovered the trading houses, known as “sogo shosha,” in a handbook describing thousands of companies in Japan. “I was just going through a little handbook that probably had 2,000 or 3,000 Japanese companies in it,” Buffett said. “One problem I have is that I can’t read that handbook anymore. The print’s too small. And there were these five trading companies. They have a special name for them in Japan, but they were selling at ridiculously low prices.” Made most money on 8 ideas over 50 years In investing, Buffett believes the greatest success comes from only a handful of home runs. In fact, he said, quoting Munger, Berkshire made most of its money on about eight or nine ideas over 50 years. “If you get real opportunities every five or six years…, you have to be patient,” Buffett said. “We talked about it every day and we read every report and we did everything else, but if you think you can get an idea a day from listening to your friendly broker or doing a lot of reading of the financial information published … forget it, because every now and then you get extraordinary opportunities, and most of the time you don’t have much of an edge.” Buffett noted that the one problem with the investment business is that opportunities don’t come along in an orderly fashion. Insurance float is ‘absolutely free money’ Buffett also touted Berkshire’s unmatched amount of float that its insurance empire generates . Float refers to the money an insurance company holds temporarily between collecting premiums from policyholders and paying out claims. “There’s no property casualty company that has our float,” Buffett said. “That is money that (as long as we’re writing it and underwriting profit), is absolutely free money. And we would expect that over a 50-year, hundred-year *******, that we would be able to say the same thing.” Buffett cautioned that there will be years when Berkshire has a bad underwriting record, which would eat into the float earnings. However, in the last 20 years, he said the firm has only suffered one annual underwriting loss. “It’s like running a bank, where people leave their money with you and you pay them minus 2.2% and you don’t have any check clearing or anything else to do, and it’s included in that total. But we run our business actually with a different mindset than any other PC company I think probably in the world,” he said. Reading balance sheets Buffett, with a history of identifying opportunities by reading company reports and filings, noted that balance sheets — highlighting assets and liabilities — offer more insight into companies’ health than income statements. “That’s one thing we’ve really never talked about here, but I spend more time looking at balance sheets than I do income statements. The march commemorating Jerusalem Day — which marks Israel’s capture of east Jerusalem, including the Old City and its holy sites sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, in the 1967 ******** war — was set for later in the day. The event is threatening to inflame tensions that are already rife in the restive city amid nearly 600 days of war in Gaza. Jerusalem lies at the heart of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, who each see the city as a key part of their national and religious identity. It is one of the most intractable issues of the conflict and often emerges as a flashpoint. Perceived encroachments by Jews on the site have set off widespread violence on a number of occasions going back decades. “We are marking a holiday for Jerusalem,” Ben-Gvir said Monday at the site, accompanied by other lawmakers and a ******. “There are truly many Jews flooding the Temple Mount. How nice to see that.” Beyadenu, an activist group that encourages Jewish visits to the site, said dozens of people had ascended to the holy compound Monday draped in the Israeli flag, and had prayed there. Since Israel captured the site in 1967, a tenuous understanding between Israeli and ******* religious authorities at the compound has allowed Jews — who revere the site as the Temple Mount, the location of the biblical temples — to visit but not pray there. Catholic worshippers have been flocking to Alba de Tormes, a town ringed by rolling pastures in western Spain where the remains of the Spanish saint, mystic and 16th-century religious reformer were on display this month. “It gave me a feeling of fulfillment, of joy, and of sadness,” said Guiomar Sánchez, who traveled from Madrid with her two daughters on Sunday, the last full day of the exhibit. Inspired by her mother’s belief in the Carmelite nun, Sánchez praised the mystic’s writings as being ahead of her time. Sánchez said she also came in part to honor her mother. “Seeing her was an inexplicable experience,” Sánchez added. On Monday morning, the coffin of the saint who died in 1582 was resealed and carried through the town streets, with pilgrims following the procession. It is unclear how many years — or decades — will pass before the church once again makes St. Teresa’s remains visible to the public. Teresa was last displayed in 1914, when devotees had a single day to see the saint. This time, the display drew almost 100,000 visitors over two weeks, said Miguel Ángel González, the prior of the Discalced Carmelites of Salamanca. The coffin that holds the saint’s remains is barely 1.3 meters (4 feet) long. What is visible is a skull dressed in a habit with vestments covering other parts of the body, not all of which is intact. The saint’s heart is kept in another part of the church, officials said. Other body parts are kept as relics — fingers, a hand and a jaw — in churches across Europe. Teresa is a towering figure from Spain’s Golden Age and 16th-century Counter-Reformation. Her explorations of the inner life and meditations on her relationship with God were controversial, yet they have been held up over the centuries as a “profound treatise on spirituality,” said José Calvo, a professor of theology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca who specializes in Medieval history. Many have worshipped her. Former Spanish dictator Gen. Francisco Franco is believed to have kept a relic of the saint’s hand next to his bed. Last September, the newly elected Pope Leo XIV visited the saint’s birthplace in Avila, an hour’s drive from Alba de Tormes. Teresa’s remains have also spawned memes online about the macabre nature of crowding around her centuries-old skull. In Alba de Tormes, church officials and experts downplayed such reactions, saying the display was nothing out of the ordinary for how Catholics have revered their saints for centuries. “It was just something people always did when they thought somebody might be a saint,” said Cathleen Medwick, who wrote the book “Teresa of Avila, The Progress of a Soul.” “And the fact that her body hadn’t decayed very much was also considered a sign of her sanctity,” Medwick added. Some worshippers this month were visibly moved. On Sunday, a group of nuns from India wiped away tears as they stood by the side of the coffin and looked at the saint’s remains behind a glass case. Gregoria Martín López, 75, climbed to an elevated part of the church behind the altar, hoping to get a better view from above of the diminutive saint’s skull. “The saint for me is a thing of great strength. Jake Wood quit the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) late on Sunday, saying it would not be able to fulfil the principles of “humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence”. The plan, also backed by the US, envisions private contractors delivering aid to Palestinians via Israel-designated distribution sites. It was heavily criticised by the United Nations, which says it will not participate. Israel insists the plan is needed to stop ****** stealing aid, which the armed group denies doing. Under the GHF plan, Palestinians would be expected to collect boxes weighing up to 20kg (44lbs) containing food and basic hygiene items from four distribution points in southern Gaza. The majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million population is currently in the north and central areas of the strip, and it is unclear how the weak or injured would be able to collect the aid. UN aid chief Tom Fletcher said it would force further displacement, restrict aid to only one part of Gaza and make “starvation a bargaining chip.” In his resignation statement, Wood, a former US marine, said: “Two months ago, I was approached about leading GHF’s efforts because of my experience in humanitarian operations. “Like many others around the world, I was horrified and heartbroken at the hunger crisis in Gaza and, as a humanitarian leader, I was compelled to do whatever I could to help alleviate the suffering.” He said he was “proud of the work I oversaw, including developing a pragmatic plan that could feed hungry people, address security concerns about diversion, and complement the work of longstanding NGOs in Gaza.” But, he said, it had become “clear that it is not possible to implement this plan while also strictly adhering to the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence, which I will not abandon.” In response, the GHF said it would “not be deterred” by Wood’s resignation and would begin delivering aid on Monday, with an aim to reach one million Palestinians by the end of the week. The group said that critics “who benefit from the status quo have been more focused on tearing this apart than on getting aid in, afraid that new, creative solutions to intractable problems might actually succeed.” It added: “Our trucks are loaded and ready to go.” Israeli media reported that the first of four distribution centres would be opened by GHF on Monday morning. Last week, Israel eased an 11-week blockade on all food, fuel, medicine and other supplies entering Gaza, with the first aid trucks reaching civilians in recent days – but the UN has said it’s a “drop in the ocean of what’s needed”. The World Food Programme (WFP) warned last week that Gaza’s entire population was “on the brink of starvation”. Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, told the BBC’s Today Programme that the GHF is “militarised, privatised, politicised” and “not in conformity with neutrality”. “The people behind it are military – they are ex-CIA and ex-military people… Let’s go back to the system that worked” he said. The GHF has also come under intense scrutiny around its funding, origins and backing. Over the weekend, an investigation by The New York Times suggested the group may have been conceived in Israel by a group of Israeli officials and military officers and their partners in the Israeli business sector. Responding to the plan earlier this month, UN children’s fund spokesperson Jonathan Crick said: “How is a mother of four children, who has lost her husband, going to carry 20kg back to her makeshift tent, sometimes several kilometres away?” “The most vulnerable people, including the elderly, people with disabilities, the sick and wounded, and orphans, will face huge challenges to access aid.” Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to ******’s cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. Following an invitation from Prime Minister Mark Carney, Charles will open parliament in Ottawa on Tuesday, the first time a British monarch has carried out the duty since his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, did so 68 years ago. Now, imagine your financial plan is based on the idea that you’ll withdraw 3% from your retirement accounts each year (adjusting upward for inflation over time). If you do that in a rising market, your investments should be gaining enough that the stock sales involved won’t take as much of a toll on the value of your portfolio. In fact, you could even end the year with your portfolio worth more than it was at its start, despite your selling shares. However, in this scenario, share prices are down, which means that you’ll need to sell more shares to raise the same amount of cash. And the value of your portfolio was dropping at the same time. The timing of that particular withdrawal not only drains your account faster but also leaves you with fewer assets that can generate growth and returns as the market recovers. In a nutshell, a hit to your retirement account in the early years will do more damage than it would if you were older and didn’t need your nest egg to last for so long. Regardless of your age, it’s never fun to watch the value of your portfolio shrink, but it’s scarier when you expect you’re going to need your nest egg to cover your bills for many years, but you’re left with less than you expected to have — meaning that even when the market gets back to growth, you’ll see less real benefit from that growth. Ideally, you’ll have a portion of your money held in assets that aren’t so exposed to the ups and downs of the stock market — funds that you can use to cover expenses without selling stocks when they’re down. If you have investments in high-quality short-term bonds, short-term bond funds, or any other low-risk liquid investments, take money from those rather than withdrawing funds from your stock-based retirement accounts when it’s down. If you don’t have such a reserve, consider building one when the market is back in growth mode and your portfolio is getting healthier. For example, if you don’t need every dollar from your required minimum distributions (RMDs), take advantage of the situation by tucking the money you don’t need today into a fund for the future. If you’re 73 and taking RMDs, you know that you must withdraw a specific percentage of each tax-advantaged retirement account’s value each year. Fail to do so, and you’ll owe the IRS a painful penalty. However, bear markets are an excellent time not to take a penny more than you have to. Whether you’re taking RMDs or not, bear markets are also a good time to forgo inflation adjustments, postpone large expenses, and reduce discretionary spending. The less you take from your account during such times, the better you position yourself to benefit from the market’s future growth. According to The Hartford Fund, about 42% of the S&P 500 Index’s strongest days occurred during the late stages of bear markets as Wall Street began to turn around. But it’s not as though there’s a flashing red light that announces when the market is transitioning from a bear to a bull market. The signs can be subtle and next to impossible to predict. Remaining fully invested during downturns means you won’t miss out on the most lucrative parts of the recoveries that generally follow them. No matter how often you’ve experienced turbulent markets, they can be nerve-wracking.
