  1. Macron says he and wife were horsing around when she appears to push the French leader Macron says he and wife were horsing around when she appears to push the French leader PARIS (AP) — French first lady Brigitte Macron appeared to push her husband away with both hands on his face just before they disembarked from their plane to start a tour of Southeast Asia this weekend. President Emmanuel Macron dismissed the gesture — caught on camera — as just horseplay, but it caused a stir back home. French media on Monday tried to decipher the interaction that cameras spotted through the just-opened door of the plane. The headline of a story on the website of the daily Le Parisien newspaper asked: “Slap or ‘squabble’? The images of Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron disembarking in Vietnam trigger a lot of comment.” Macron later told reporters that the couple — married since 2007 after meeting at the high school where he was a student and she was a teacher — were simply joking around. “We are horsing around and, really, joking with my wife,” he said, adding that the incident was being overblown: “It becomes a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe.” His office earlier offered a similar explanation. “It was a moment where the president and his wife were decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by horsing around. It’s a moment of complicity. It was all that was needed to give ammunition to the conspiracy theorists,” his office said. The video — taken as the Macrons arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Sunday — showed a uniformed man pulling open the plane door and revealing the president standing inside, dressed in a suit and talking to someone who wasn’t visible. Two arms — in red sleeves — reached out and pushed Macron away, with one hand covering his mouth and part of his nose while the other was on his jawbone. The French leader recoiled, turning his head away. Then, apparently realizing that he was on camera, he broke into a smile and gave a little wave. In subsequent images, Macron and his wife, wearing a red jacket, appeared at the top of the stairs. He offered an arm but she didn’t take it. They walked down the carpeted stairs side by side. Brigitte Macron was Brigitte Auzière, a married mother of three children, when they met at his high school. A teacher, she supervised the drama club where Emmanuel Macron, a literature lover, was a member. He moved to Paris for his last year of high school, but promised to marry Brigitte. She later moved to the French capital to join him and divorced before they finally married. 2. Nvidia RTX 5090 prototype surfaces with four 16-pin power connectors and additional VRMs Nvidia RTX 5090 prototype surfaces with four 16-pin power connectors and additional VRMs An alleged prototype of Nvidia’s RTX 5090 has surfaced, featuring four 16-pin power connectors, courtesy Twitter/X user @yuuki_ans. Presumably this particular design is an early engineering sample which was used by Nvidia or one of its board partners for testing purposes. Although the unit pictured has been destroyed by cutting it in half, it does give us an insight in to what Nvidia was working with prior to the final design. Having four power connectors could be for various reasons. A simple one could be just to provide a fail-safe. In the event of one of the connectors failing, which has been a common sight, then others could be used to continue delivering power to the GPU. Another possible use case could be to distribute power evenly in order to avoid overheating. Theoretically, four 16-pin connectors are capable of drawing power up to 2,400W, which is roughly the same as running two space heaters at the same time. That is a lot of power for a single component, which is probably why we can see two identical rows of VRMs positioned on the right side of the GPU die mount. A single GPU drawing 2,400W is far beyond any mainstream gaming PC, instead, this class of hardware would probably target niche markets like AI (Artificial Intelligence), HPC (High-Performance Computing), or CG and VFX simulation. You may like There are additional connectors around the edges of the PCB including fan and USB headers as well as some diagnostic pins. It also has five video out ports, instead of the usual four, which could again be for some specific pre-production testing. If we look at the memory modules it is similar to the RTX 5090, however, we don’t know for sure if there is more memory soldered at the back of the board. In that case, it could be an early production unit for something even more powerful like a 5090 Ti or even the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell series. Previous prototype RTX 5090 leaks we have spotted Back in January, we reported of another RTX 5090 prototype leak featuring dual 16-pin (12V-2×6) power connectors. It offered support for a reported TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 800W, which is about 39% higher than the RTX 5090’s 575W. The prototype also included the GB202 GPU but with a higher 24,576 CUDA core count than the RTX 5090’s 21,760, as well as higher clock speeds, and 32GB of GDDR7 memory on a 512-bit interface. Similarly, in a behind-the-scenes video shared by Nvidia, the company briefly showcased an early prototype of the RTX 5090 Founders Edition. It featured a giant quad-slot design with a vertical PCB and three cooling fans. The ‘three-thirds flow-through’ cooling architecture made the GPU so big that if Nvidia went ahead, it would have been the largest Founders Edition graphics card ever. Thankfully, Nvidia chose not to bring that concept to the market, although that hasn’t stopped board partners from making beefy RTX 5090 models for its consumers. 4. Australians insane savings from key working trend Australians insane savings from key working trend *********** workers will continue to work from home, although not as much as some would like, as the insane amount they are saving comes to light. Fresh figures released by Deloitte Access Economics shows the average *********** worker could save $5308 a year by taking out transportation and fuel costs. It is also having the added benefit of having a happier workforce, which is reducing turnover for employers, the report said. It also said the tug of war between employees wanting to be able to work from home and employers wanting them to be in the office more often appears to have ended for now, with 80 per cent believing WFH would remain fro at least the next two years. Deloitte Access economics partner and lead author David Rumbens told NewsWire employers are meeting employees in the middle, focusing on hybrid working models. “There has been this tension as employees have preferences working from home because it saves on travel costs and time,” Mr Rumbens said. Camera IconAustralians are saving thousands by avoiding going into the office everyday. NewsWire / Luis Enrique Ascui Credit: News Corp Australia “There is certainly a body of thinking that collaboration in person aids productivity and innovation, hence, where there is flexible work there is encouragement of some time collaborating and working together. “We are now seeing a lot of organisations in the white collar and professional space settling on a hybrid mix allowing for those benefits of teaming and proximity.” These balances come as the overall strength of the workforce shows the employment rate remains at a near record low of 4.1 per cent, with 390,000 more Australians finding work over the last 12-months. In April alone the employment rate surged by 89,000 people, but it’s not all good news for workers. “The overall strength of the labour market has masked the relative strength of non-market sector employment compared to the market sector,” Mr Rumbens said. “In the year to the December quarter of 2024, the non-market sector (health care, education, public administration) accounted for approximately 80 per cent of total employment gains.” Australia’s Cash Rate 2022 Productivity lags remains the key threat to living standards Deloitte said with inflation moderating, wages ticking up and interest rates ticking down, there could be further boosts to jobs if it wasn’t for the “abysmal” productivity performance. “*********** labour productivity has fallen considerably over the past three years,” he said. “Since its peak in March 2022, Australia’s labour productivity has fallen by 5.7 per cent and labour productivity in the non-market sector now sits at a near 20-year low, underscoring why boosting productivity growth should be a top priority for the government.” Camera IconBut productivity falls remains a key threat to market. NewsWire / Nicholas Eagar Credit: NewsWire Mr Rumbens said if this continues to fall over a number of years, *********** workers will eventually see a fall in living standards. “We want productivity gains so we can get sustainable real wage growth. “The risk if we don’t have productivity all the nice wage growth goes back into price growth and we’re effectively no better off. “So it becomes really important to drive living standards and the ability to sustainably actually generate real wage growth over time.” Mr Rumbens said Australians just experienced a real cost of living crisis over the last two years, going through a per capita recession which could return if productivity doesn’t improve. “It could be that it means inflation rises again. “While the Reserve Bank is cutting rates and experts expect it to continue but none of that is guaranteed. “So if productivity goes backwards, then prices will go up and hence you go back into a cost-of-living spiral, which workers have just been through. “They got reasonable wage growth but price growth was much more, so they ended up being poorer over the last, effectively, three years. Despite the risks Mr Rumbens said workers could over time help solve the problem. “We’ve seen from the Treasurer, the agenda for the second term of government will be productivity focused without forgetting about cost of living. “Part of that is encouraging technology use, encouraging innovation by private businesses. “Skills need to evolve as well. In many cases there needs to be a skill or knowledge boost that goes along side the technology boost. 5. Police investigate Enoch Powell portrait hung in village shop as ‘hate incident’ Police investigate Enoch Powell portrait hung in village shop as ‘hate incident’ A village shop is being investigated by police over the display of a portrait of Enoch Powell alongside his most controversial anti-immigration speech. Mumfords, an ironmonger in Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire, has a framed picture of the divisive former Tory MP in its window along with an excerpt of his 1968 “Rivers of Blood” speech. Shopkeeper Elizabeth Griffiths said she put the photograph in her window in February to highlight the “need for strong assertive leadership during tough political times”. But West Mercia Police said it was treating the display as a “hate incident” after receiving a report on 16 May of “offensive content”. Mr Powell caused a national political firestorm when he used inflammatory language to criticise immigration to the *** in a 45-minute speech to local Conservative members at a Birmingham hotel. Enoch Powell was sacked after his infamous ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech in 1968 (The Independent) The former Conservative MP for Wolverhampton South West said white British people would find themselves “strangers in their own country” as a result of migration. He was sacked from the Conservative front bench for making the speech and it outraged his senior colleagues at the time. A hate incident is any non-criminal offence that a victim thinks is motivated by hostility or prejudice towards a person’s race, religion, gender, ******* orientation, or disability. Last week, Sir Keir Starmer was accused of copying Mr Powell’s words when he warned that the *** was becoming an “island of strangers” while vowing to crack down on immigration. Sir Keir said he would “take back control” to slash the number of people coming to the *** as the country “risks becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together”. Keir Starmer was accused of copying Powell’s words (PA Wire) Norwich South MP Clive Lewis said: “It’s simply not sustainable for the prime minister to echo the language of Enoch Powell’s ‘rivers of blood’ speech. This kind of language doesn’t just alienate communities, it drives people away from our country altogether.” Downing Street rejected comparisons made with Mr Powell, who is a political hero of Reform leader Nigel Farage, and said Sir Keir “absolutely stands by” his language. Ms Griffiths told The Independent the picture had been in her shop window since the first week of February and she had received “nothing but praise for all the time it has been there”. She said it was put there alongside Sir Winston Churchill, St Francis of Assisi, “our Lord Jesus Christ”, Churchill mugs and books on Churchill and Donald Trump. A West Mercia Police spokesperson told The Independent: “On 16 May we received a report of offensive content displayed in a shop window on Church Street in Cleobury Mortimer. “This is being treated as a hate incident and enquiries are ongoing.” Source link #Police #investigate #Enoch #Powell #portrait #hung #village #shop #hate #incident Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  6. Southwest Airlines starts charging many flyers to check bags this week Southwest Airlines starts charging many flyers to check bags this week Passengers check in for Southwest Airlines flights at Chicago Midway International Airport on Feb. 18, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. Scott Olson | Getty Images Set your alarm. Southwest Airlines customers have only one day to go before the company starts charging to check bags for the first time in more than half a century. Starting Wednesday, Southwest will end its blanket “two bags fly free” policy. It was a perk that was sacrosanct among customers and the airlines’ longtime executives alike, setting the airline apart from competitors. But baggage fees brought in nearly $7.3 billion for U.S. airlines last year, according to federal data, and Southwest executives who have long vowed to hold onto the policy have been under pressure to raise revenue. The airline hasn’t yet said how much it will charge to check bags, but rivals generally charge about $35 or $40 for a first checked bag for domestic flights, though there are some exceptions. Along with starting to charge for checked bags, Southwest has announced major changes to its business model over the past year, like getting rid of open seating. The carrier is also debuting basic-economy tickets like those sold by Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines on Wednesday. Here’s what travelers should know about the end of free bags on Southwest: What is changing? Southwest will no longer offer two free checked bags with many tickets purchased on or after Wednesday. For tickets purchased before then, a Southwest spokesman said the carrier will honor the terms of those fares, like the two free checked bags. The fees will apply to its no-frills Basic, its Wanna Get Away Plus and its Anytime fares. Southwest announced the policy in March after months of pressure from activist Elliott Investment Management, which took a stake in the airline last year and won five board seats, pushing for major changes at the company like its free checked bags, changeable tickets and open seating. Are there exemptions? Yes. Travelers with top-tier status in Southwest’s Rapid Rewards loyalty program will get two free checked bags, as will customers in the highest-level Business Select fares. Customers with a Southwest Airlines co-branded credit card and their travel companions booked together with the same card won’t get charged for their first standard checked bag. A-List frequent flyer members, the second-highest tier in the loyalty program, will also get their first bag checked free of charge. Read more CNBC airline newsNew fare type: Basic Southwest on Wednesday will also start selling basic-economy tickets. With the new Basic fare, customers won’t be able to make changes to their tickets, they’ll be among the last customers to board and their fare credits will expire in six months, compared with 12 months for other ticket classes. In another change, the airline is ending its Wanna Get Away fare, which was the lowest tier ticket before the changes. What about assigned seats? Southwest has been known for its open-seating model for decades. Loyalists often obsessively check in a day before their flight in hopes of scoring a favorable boarding slot. But later this year, Southwest says it will start selling tickets for flights in 2026 that will have seat assignments. It is also outfitting its planes with extra legroom seats, like many of its competitors, that fetch higher prices. Can Southwest handle it? Southwest executives have told staff that they expect passengers to carry on more luggage (those policies for free carry-ons aren’t changing) and have said the airline is installing larger overhead bins on its Boeing fleet, which should help with an influx of carry-on bags. Executives have also said staff will get mobile bag-tag printers at gates and airport lobbies to assist customers. Are people mad? Southwest can hardly post on social media — even about babies and puppies on board — without getting angry comments about the changed baggage policy. But CEO Bob Jordan told CNBC last month that the policy change announcement the company made on March 11 hasn’t deterred customers. “We have seen no book-down on that day or after that day,” he said on “Squawk on the Street” on April 24. 10. Austria’s ex-chancellor wins appeal against perjury conviction Austria’s ex-chancellor wins appeal against perjury conviction Austria’s former chancellor Sebastian Kurz has won his appeal against a conviction for giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee. The court’s ruling overturns last year’s judgement and eight-month suspended prison sentence for the former political star. Once hailed a wunderkind of Europe’s conservatives, the 38-year-old resigned as chancellor in 2021 and quit politics amid a series of allegations. Monday’s acquittal removes a key obstacle to a potential political comeback, but he still faces investigation on separate corruption allegations. Last year, Kurz was found guilty of perjury for giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee. The case against him centred over allegations that he had been involved in the selection of executives on a newly-created state holding company when he was chancellor, as opposed to being merely kept informed. Kurz told a parliamentary probe in 2020 that he was “involved in the sense of informed”. But the first trial judge deemed that declaration false and ruled that Kurz had played a more active role. However in his appeal Kurz argued that the judge who had convicted him was biased. The appeal bench of three judges ruled in his favour on Monday, reading out in their judgement that Kurz “was acquitted because the objective offence of giving false evidence was not fulfilled”. Speaking to reporters outside court on Monday, Kurz said the years of accusations against him had “now all collapsed”. “There have been numerous court hearings – a huge amount of confrontation with these accusations. You have all witnessed how much this has been celebrated and that it has now all collapsed,” he said. He has also denied wrongdoing on the corruption allegations for which he is being investigated. Prosecutors are yet to decide whether to charge him over the allegations that he used public money to pay for favourable media coverage and to fund polls which exaggerated support for him. Kurz has not publicly voiced an intention to return to politics yet. Since quitting in 2021, he has been involved in several business ventures including the high-profile Dream cybsersecurity company, which he co-founded in 2023 with partners including the former boss of Israel’s NSO firm that developed the controversial Pegasus spyware product. Kurz had previously headed the conservative Austrian’s People’s Party, leading the party to victories in 2017 and 2019 on a hardline immigration stance. The People’s Party is still in charge in Austria after it managed to form a three-party coalition with the Social Democrats and a liberal party after elections last August. However that vote was won by the far-right Freedom Party, who seized on voter frustrations on the economy and migration. Despite topping parliamentary elections for the first time, they failed to form government. Raducanu, who had her blood pressure taken on court, then left for a short break before the decider. The 2021 US Open champion looked invigorated on her return and quickly went up a double break. The pair continued to trade breaks before Raducanu reasserted her authority to secure a gruelling victory after two hours and 44 minutes. Raducanu’s relief at coming through the joint longest clay-court match of her career showed as she wearily dropped her racquet on the court. She will now turn her attentions to Swiatek, who cruised past Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova 6-3 6-3. Trump’s tariffs on EU delayed after call with bloc chief on trade talks – National Trump’s tariffs on EU delayed after call with bloc chief on trade talks – National A weekend telephone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen gave ‘new impetus’ to trade talks, the EU said on Monday, after Trump dropped his threat to impose 50 per cent tariffs on imports from the European Union next month. Trump restored a July 9 deadline to allow for talks between Washington and the 27-nation bloc to produce a deal after what he said was “a very nice call” with von der Leyen on Sunday which an EU spokesperson said had been initiated by her. The euro hit a one-month high against the dollar on Monday, while European shares surged and were poised to recoup the previous session’s losses. Gold prices fell as Trump’s latest move reduced demand for the safe-haven asset. The US and EU trade representatives were due to hold talks on Monday afternoon, European time, the European Commission spokesperson said, declining to give any information about the content of the call between Trump and von der Leyen. Despite the relief, Germany’s family-owned LAPP Group, which makes everything from cables and wires to robotics for factories, warned that some of its specialized products would still be affected by the planned tariffs, and the volatile business environment. Story continues below advertisement “Unfortunately, current U.S. politics is characterized by unpredictability, individual interests and populism,” CEO Matthias Lapp told Reuters. “Germany’s good transatlantic relations have been built up over decades of diplomatic work and mutual understanding. She asked him during a call to delay the tariffs until July, the deadline he had originally set when he announced new tariffs in April. Trump told reporters he had granted the request. “I agreed to move it,” Trump said before returning to Washington after a weekend in New Jersey. “She said we will rapidly get together and see if we can work something out.” Story continues below advertisement Von der Leyen said in a post on X that she had a “good call” with Trump and that the EU was ready to move quickly. “Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively,” she said. “To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9.” The negotiations had been stuck, with Washington demanding unilateral concessions from Brussels to open up to U.S. business while the EU seeks an agreement in which both sides could gain, according to people familiar with the talks. The EU already faces 25 per cent U.S. import tariffs on its steel, aluminum and cars and so-called “reciprocal” tariffs of 10 per cent for almost all other goods, a levy that had been due to rise to 20 per cent after Trump’s 90-day pause expires in July. 14. Read more CNBC airline news New fare type: Basic Southwest on Wednesday will also start selling basic-economy tickets. Hellblade 2 is finally getting a physical version alongside its PS5 port Hellblade 2 is finally getting a physical version alongside its PS5 port Xbox and Ninja Theory’s Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is finally getting a physical version, coinciding with its upcoming PlayStation 5 port. When it first released for Xbox and PC last year, Hellblade 2 was available only as a digital download, costing around $50. Now, following Hellblade 2’s PS5 announcement last week, ratings board ESRB has listed a version of Senua’s Saga with physical games firm Limited Run Games as publisher, with PS5 and Xbox Series listed as formats. A second ESRB listing suggests Limited Run is planning a physical version of the original Hellblade game for Nintendo Switch. Limited Run is known for its physical products – usually for smaller independent games – sold in limited quantities. In 2022, the company was acquired by Embracer Group via its Freemode subsidiary. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 will be released on PlayStation 5 this summer. The PS5 version of the game will include “new features” that will come to PC and Xbox at the same time as a free patch, Ninja Theory announced last week. “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II arrives optimized for PlayStation 5, and PS5 Pro Enhanced, with added features and immersive haptic feedback for new ways to experience the award-winning and critically acclaimed next chapter of Senua’s story,” according to a PlayStation Store listing for the game. VGC’s Hellblade 2 review said it was “a mechanically dated game carried along by its incredible presentational flair”. “Fans of the first game could perhaps split it across a few nights for a better experience, and Melina Juergens’ performance deserves to be seen,” we said. “It also deserves a more engaging experience, however.” Source link #Hellblade #finally #physical #version #PS5 #port Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  17. Tech conferences are ramping up security to quell employee protests Tech conferences are ramping up security to quell employee protests Security officers block entrance doors after pro-************ protesters attempted to enter the Microsoft Build conference at the Seattle Convention Center Arch building in Seattle, Washington on May 19, 2025. Jason Redmond | Afp | Getty Images At Microsoft’s annual Build conference on Tuesday, Executive Vice President Jay Parikh’s keynote was interrupted by an employee protesting the company’s contracts with the Israeli government. The protester at the Seattle Convention Center was quickly whisked away by security guards, including some undercover agents dressed like attendees. More than 800 miles south in Mountain View, California, security guards lined the mainstage of Google I/O, where Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai was set to speak. At the entrance to the developers conference, roughly two dozen ******-clad guards rifled through bags, opening up lipstick cases and pulling out items, including women’s feminine products, and confiscating over-the-counter pain medications. The vibe is different during this year’s tech conference season. Tensions were already elevated after the October 2023 attack by ****** on Israel and the extended bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip that followed. But they’ve heightened in recent months as artificial intelligence technologies advance at a rapid rate and an AI arms race has entered the most sensitive parts of society. Additionally, there’s the aftermath of the fatal shooting in December of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan as the executive was on way on his way to an investor event. “We definitely have seen an uptick in the request for security, specifically in the last six to nine months,” said Richard Dossett, client relations manager for American Global Security, which works with tech companies. “There have also been a lot of protests and civil upheaval, especially in Fortune 500 companies, with the landscape at the moment, so they want extra security to make sure they’re not going to be hassled.” Security firms and industry experts told CNBC that technology companies’ increased work with governments has contributed to an uptick in security needs. AI companies in recent months have been walking back bans on military use of their products and entering into deals with defense industry giants and the Defense Department. Companies are responding to increased outrage in part by trying to quell internal dissent. Google last year expanded its list of prohibited discussion topics to include international issues, territorial disputes, national policy events and military conflicts. A demonstrator is removed from the audience as they interrupt a presentation by Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella at the Microsoft Build 2025 conference in Seattle, Washington on May 19, 2025. Jason Redmond | AFP | Getty Images For Microsoft, this week’s protests had recent precedent. In April, former employees interrupted the company’s 50th anniversary celebrations, calling Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman a “war profiteer.” Ibtihal Aboussad, then a software engineer in the company’s AI division, walked toward the stage at the event in Redmond, Washington saying, “You claim that you care for using AI for good, but Microsoft sells AI weapons to the Israeli military.” Employees at the company had previously formed a group called No Azure for Apartheid, following the creation of similar movements at Google and Amazon directed at opposing work with the Israeli government. Parikh, who runs the newly created CoreAi group at Microsoft, heard that specific message during his Build speech this week. “Jay!” yelled the worker from the audience. “How dare you talk about AI when my people are suffering! Cut ties! No Azure for apartheid! CEO Satya Nadella was interrupted during his keynote by an employee named Joe Lopez. “Satya! How about you show how Microsoft is killing Palestinians?” Lopez screamed. “How about you show the Israeli war crimes are powered by Azure.” Another employee followed, “As a Microsoft worker, I refuse to be complicit in this genocide. Free Palestine!” That employee was later fired, as was Lopez. ‘Turbulent world’ Kenneth Bombace, CEO of Global Threat Solutions, said tech companies “have had robust security but I would say it has picked up in the last year or so, or even more recently.” “It’s sort of a turbulent world we live in, politically and otherwise right now,” said Bombace, whose firm provides clients with protection and investigative services. Following the protests at Build, Microsoft employees reported that emails with the words Gaza, Palestine or genocide wouldn’t send, and expressed concern they were being blocked by the company, according to screenshots, recordings and documents viewed by CNBC. Microsoft didn’t respond to a request for comment about the heightened security. Regarding the email issue, a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement that some messages were being “sent to tens of thousands of employees and we have taken measures to try and reduce those emails to those that have not opted in.” Pro-************ protesters blocked the Google I/O developer conference entrance to protest Google’s Project Nimbus and Israeli attacks on Gaza and Rafah, at its headquarters in Mountain View, California, United States on May 14, 2024. Tayfun Coskun | Anadolu | Getty Images Google didn’t provide a comment about its security presence at I/O, but a spokesperson pointed to the list of prohibited items at Shoreline Amphitheater, where the conference took place. Google had a similar situation at its developer conference last year, when dozens of pro-************ protesters rallied outside with red paint on signs and clothing to signify blood. Banners and signs read “Don’t Be Evil” and “Stop fueling genocide.” The demonstrators demanded the tech giant withdraw from its Project Nimbus contract, a $1.2 billion deal to provide AI technology to the Israeli government. “We won’t stop ’til Nimbus is dropped,” protesters chanted. Bombace said that as tech companies collaborate with governments, they “have to meet certain security standards.” “We’re providing services right now in response to activity based on the conflict in Gaza,” Bombace said. Social media companies, he said, “have a whole unique footprint of issues because of the nature of their business and the things that are being posted on their platforms.” Last year, during a keynote speech in New York from a Google executive, an employee in the company’s cloud division protested publicly, proclaiming “I refuse to build technology that powers genocide.” The hired event security forced him out of the building and the company later fired him. Google ended up terminating more than 50 employees after a series of protests against Project Nimbus last year. Police officers and security guards stand guard at Google’s annual developer conference. Jennifer Elias Dossett said he’s also noticed an uptick in protesters trying to gain access to corporate campus buildings to record videos or take pictures to get their messages to the public. “When people try to invade a company’s space and film it on camera and it goes viral — that’s something other companies see and think ‘we don’t want that to happen to us,'” Dossett said. “It could affect their brand but largely, it’s been about safety of the people.” At Build, Microsoft’s use of undercover guards plays into a growing trend, experts said. “They’ll be in the crowd and say ‘we have a suspicious male who’s wearing a white shirt in row three,'” Bombace said. “There’s a lot that goes on that the average person doesn’t recognize and that’s good.” It’s not just at conferences and on campuses where companies are taking extra measures for protection. Google lifted Pichai’s security costs by 22% in 2024 to $8.27 million. At least a dozen S&P 500 companies have highlighted increased security costs, Reuters reported last month, based on an analysis of recent disclosures. Bombace said the AI arms race is a big reason for companies to boost spending in that area. “It’s a race right now and that leads to increased security,” Bombace said. He added that to foreign adversaries, “technology becomes the No. 1 target.” WATCH: Balancing search, AI at Google I/O Source link #Tech #conferences #ramping #security #quell #employee #protests Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  18. How AI is reshaping real estate How AI is reshaping real estate 00:00 Speaker A And basically you know, you’re walking people in your clients with this idea that AI and robotics are transforming the real estate industry. It’s driving, what you say, is this, this real transformative evolution of the of the industry walk us through it, just high level. What do you mean by that? 00:17 Speaker B Yeah, so AI and robotics are, you know, traditionally I mean robotics has been traditionally, people think of it as manufacturing and logistics, but it’s going to be a lot more than that. It’s already starting to be. AI, we already know, can drive efficiencies and, and connect the dots and improve, um, you know, efficiency gains in a lot of places. But high level, if you break down, um, like real estate, the use of real estate, and the use of really anything in the world, you’re making things, you’re moving things, you’re manipulating things or you’re storing things. That’s majority of GDP fits into that bucket. With real estate, um, if you if you think about it, AI and robotics going to transform the entire lifecycle of real estate. So, you’ve got the design. So, how are you building things? Where are you building things? And so, there’s a couple considerations there. So, you’re gonna have AI and robotics used, uh, in housing, in mobility and transportation. You’re gonna see, you know, things like parking lots turn into parks, as you see less need because we have autonomous vehicles that don’t need to park. So there’s a design element where AI and robotics will, or artificial intelligence, will redesign how we’re thinking about designing. So, companies like Autodesk, players like that will, will have a huge play into, um, just like that, that system of designing. And there’s also the materials and energy designs that are gonna come into play. So, if we think about, um, you know, we run on energy. Uh, the most advanced economies have higher utilization of energy. And so, that’s a big component of that is the energy efficiency. So, now we’re moving on to, once we’ve built or we have to design it, then we build it. Right now robots have pretty low penetration in the actually building things. It’s still very physically manual labor intensive. You do have some fab construction where, like, they pre-make it and there’s some 3D printing things, but on job sites, it’s still very manual. And there’s a lot of room, there’s a lot of need to improve the efficiency here. We have labor shortages and we we have unmet needs, we have a housing crisis. I mean, people can’t afford to live here, or, uh, the operating system really isn’t functioning. We have a lot of debt, like we can’t really operate the way we’re going. So, we actually need to use more AI and robotics to improve that side of things. Next stage is actually operations. So, AI will become the operating system of buildings. And so that’s, uh, energy efficiency, that’s improving the quality of life. Think about the aging population, a lot of them get sent to nursing homes, but like, in reality it’s like, why can’t more people live at home? So if you start to add AI, you have more energy efficiency, you have, you know, more robots that can accomplish more goals. That actually fundamentally shifts where people will be thinking about development of real estate because that will change people’s lives. And so, that also goes into, like, data centers and other things. That energy management component is very, very important. 05:09 Speaker A When you when you think about the real estate industry, though, as you know, I mean, it can be, it can be a highly regulated industry and sector, does that pose any kind of challenges or obstacles to deploying and integrating this kind of next gen tech you’re talking about? 05:28 Speaker B It’s a huge opportunity, because right now, let’s back up to like Doge. Okay, I think we brought up Doge on this show before. But in this case, we’re not trying to move fast and break things, we’re trying to move fast and make things. And if we’re doing that, AI can actually improve how we’re validating and and and reduce the red tape speed, like the the cycle. So, you know, permits take too long, there’s a lot of like opinions and local governments that are kind of getting in the way and stopping kind of NIMBY versus YIMBY. And so, you know, AI can also be used on the flip side, of the government side of saying like, why do we have these regulations? Is this for safety, energy efficiency, and codify that. And so now these codes are, uh, you know, these laws can be codified and and made easier. So we’ll see faster uptake and reduced costs, and so developers will say like, oh, I’m more likely to be able to get this through the door faster. Here are the incentives, these this is what I need to do. And so you can actually see improvements from that. But yeah, I mean, people talk about energy consumption, um, and there are a lot of players that are trying to reduce that, um, and may and make, you know, more efficient energy, uh, energy efficient buildings. So, that that should be a net positive. I don’t think anyone’s going to be against that. Source link #reshaping #real #estate Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  21. Elysee plays down apparent shove on Macron from wife in Vietnam Elysee plays down apparent shove on Macron from wife in Vietnam HANOI (Reuters) -French President Emmanuel Macron’s office on Monday played down an incident in which his wife, Brigitte, appeared to push him in the face as the couple arrived in Vietnam at the start of a Southeast Asia tour. In a video, Brigitte Macron appeared to shove her husband before he descended from the presidential plane late on Sunday, causing him to step back before he recovered and waved to the cameras at the foot of the stairs of the aircraft. She remained momentarily hidden behind the plane’s fuselage, blocking any view of her body language. The couple then descended the steps together. An Elysee official played down the moment, denying it showed an argument between the couple, who have been married since 2007: “It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing one last time before the start of the trip by having a laugh.” “It was a moment of closeness,” the official said. Macron’s visit to Vietnam, the first by a French president in almost a decade, comes as he aims to boost France’s influence in its former colony. Vietnam, which has a heavily export-driven economy, has made concessions to the U.S. in trade talks in a bid to avoid 46% tariffs. But Brussels has concerns that Vietnam’s efforts to buy more American goods could come at Europe’s expense. U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to impose 50% tariffs on imports from the European Union, but softened his stance two days later, restoring a July 9 deadline for talks between Washington and Brussels. 23. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip FE Spotted Again on Geekbench, This Time With Different Chipset Samsung Galaxy Z Flip FE Spotted Again on Geekbench, This Time With Different Chipset Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip FE is expected to go official alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 later this year. While there have been several leaks regarding the Flip phone, most of them have been contradicting when it came to the chipset being used. Most recently, the Galaxy Z Flip FE allegedly showed up on the Geekbench benchmarking site, suggesting its key details. The Galaxy Z Flip FE had earlier showed up on Geekbench with an Exynos 2400 chipset. An alleged Galaxy Z Flip FE has been listed on Geekbench with model number SM-F766U. The listing shows a ten-core chipset with a motherboard codenamed ‘s5e9955’. The CPU has a 1+2+5+2 architecture and has a prime CPU core with a 3.30GHz clock speed, two cores capped at 2.75GHz, and five cores at 2.36GHz. Lastly, the CPU also has two cores capped at 1.80GHz. These CPU speeds and codename resemble the Exynos 2500 chipset. The Galaxy Z Flip FE prototype is listed to run on Android 16 and has 12GB of RAM. It received 2,012 points in single-core testing and 7,563 points in multi-core tests. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip FE was first said to employ the Exynos 2400 chipset. Later, rumours suggested that there was a chance that Samsung could used the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC instead. Earlier this month, the Galaxy Z Flip FE had showed up on Geekbench with model number SM-F761N, powered by an Exynos 2400 chipset. The previous listing also suggested Android 16 operating system, but only 8GB of RAM. If the new Geekbench listing turns out to be true, it would be the first time that an Exynos chipset is being used by Samsung in its foldable device. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip FE Specifications (Expected) Samsung could unveil the Galaxy Z Flip FE at its Galaxy Unpacked event in July alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 models. It is tipped to come with a 6.7-inch main screen and a 3.4-inch cover screen. It could offer a 3,700mAh battery with 25W wired charging support. The Galaxy Z Flip FE could feature two outward-facing cameras, including a 12-megapixel primary camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. It is tipped to pack a 10-megapixel front camera. Galaxy Z Flip FE is rumoured to be priced under EUR 1,000 (roughly Rs. 92,000). Affiliate links may be automatically generated – see our ethics statement for details.
