  2. Turkey’s Erdogan, Pakistan PM Sharif discuss boosting cooperation Turkey’s Erdogan, Pakistan PM Sharif discuss boosting cooperation ISTANBUL (Reuters) -Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan met Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Istanbul on Sunday and said the two countries would strive to boost cooperation, particularly in defence, energy and transportation, Erdogan’s office said. Turkey has strong ties with Pakistan, both being largely ******* countries and sharing historical links, and expressed solidarity with it during its recent clashes with India. Erdogan’s office said he told Sharif it was in the interest of Turkey and Pakistan to increase solidarity in education, intelligence sharing and technological support in the fight against terrorism. Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defence Minister Yasar Guler and intelligence agency chief Ibrahim Kalin also attended the meeting. Earlier in May, Erdogan expressed solidarity with Pakistan after India conducted military strikes in response to an attack in Indian Kashmir by Islamist assailants. The clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours were the worst in more than two decades. Ankara also maintains cordial ties with India but after Erdogan’s expression of support for Pakistan, small Indian grocery shops and major online fashion retailers boycotted Turkish products. 4. Big boost for Brumbies ahead of Super crunch clash Big boost for Brumbies ahead of Super crunch clash Star playmaker Noah Lolesio is set to return to bolster the Brumbies in their crunch match against the Crusaders, with both teams chasing a crucial Super Rugby Pacific top-two spot. The ACT team haven’t finished in the top two on the ladder since 2004, but have put themselves in prime position playing at home on Friday night. The Chiefs are on top of the ladder with 46 points, followed by the Crusaders with 45 and the Brumbies on 43, with four points on offer for a win. Winger Andy Muirhead said the team had spoken about what will be at stake when they line up against the Crusaders, who have veteran Wallabies playmaker James O’Connor in their ranks. “We were sort of pinpointing this a couple of weeks ago that a result this weekend puts us in a good position to finish top-two, and obviously it’s coming down to Friday night,” Muirhead said. “It doesn’t change our mindset really, we want to be a team that plays good footy at home. “We know what the Crusaders bring and we’ve had some really good battles here at GIO (Stadium), so we’re looking forward to it and hopefully getting a good result and keeping our record at home.” He felt the team had been making steady progress and was ready to return to the glory days, having last won the title in 2004. “If you look at the last two years, we haven’t been far off the pace, and we’ve made some really good steps in particular parts of our game,” Muirhead said. “To get a good win at home this weekend is going to put us in good stead – it’s going to put our hand up for a title.” Appearing in extreme pain, Lolesio was stretchered off wearing a neck brace against the Western Force this month. Lolesio was later cleared of serious injury, and Muirhead said he was set to play. “I think he’s tracking well … he’s been recovering well and I’m assuming he will be involved in some capacity,” Muirhead said. “Being off the field has given him a bit more motivation to rip in.” Muirhead’s company, Yara Co, will be running a kick-for-cash challenge at halftime, giving schools the chance to win a share of $50,000. The company is an Indigenous civil construction business that also runs training programs through TAFE for Indigenous students. If Muirhead doesn’t get a Wallabies start, he is set to be a leading figure in the First Nations and Pasifika Invitational XV, who will face the touring British and Irish Lions. Toutai Kefu was announced as coach last week, with his assistants revealed on Tuesday, including All ******* legend Tana Umaga, former Wallabies prop Sekope Kepu, former Fiji Test coach Simon Raiwalui, and Wallabies great Glen Ella. 5. No New High in 67 Days: Are Stocks Stuck in a Narrative Loop? No New High in 67 Days: Are Stocks Stuck in a Narrative Loop? This week: technical check, narratives, new highs, shorts, valuations, healthcare, profitability, missing days, reshoring, tech vs commodity capex. Learnings and conclusions from this week’s charts: The sold off from resistance (and overbought conditions). It’s now been 67 days since the last new all-time high. Stocks are expensive, bonds are cheap. Surging short interest shows increased interest in shorting. Reshoring talk is rising, tech capex is dominating (got commodities?). Overall, it seems like the sell-off that everyone was waiting for has finally arrived. Technically speaking the market was ripe and primed for a pullback, and simply awaiting some news or narratives as a reason/excuse. With the ebb and flow of policy pronouncements and macro narratives, as I outline this week; it brings to mind a new acronym “RTFL” (Range Trading For Longer). 1. Resistance: Just as new highs seemed within reach, and just as that big round 6000 number was in sight, and just as 50-day moving average breadth reached overbought levels, we got a pullback. Plenty of support in close proximity, e.g., 5800, the 200-day average, and even stronger support close by at 5600. But one awkward thing for bulls is that this kind of looks like a lower high. Source: Callum Thomas using MarketCharts charting tools 2. VIX Base: On a similar note the is ticking up off the lows and VIX sentiment is turning up after resetting back to complacent levels. Source: SubuTrade 3. Narrative Rotation: The “reason” or excuse for the sell-off is arguably a mix of higher bond yields as we continue to rotate between macro-narratives of recession fears vs resurgent growth/inflation and the headwind of higher yields. And then there’s the usual Trump/tariff threats, which are likewise going through their own process of ebbing and flowing. Range trade for longer? Source: @MichaelKantro 4. Waiting for New Highs: Back on the topic of waiting for new all-time highs, it’s now been 67 trading days since the last new all-time high. And if we go back to those narratives from earlier in the year with Bessent and the “******* of detox”, maybe the tariff and reform game is a situation of ease-up when the market’s down, and a crack-down when the market’s up. Even if that’s not the plan, that’s kind of what it looks like so far, and that would be a strong case for range-trading-for-longer (RTFL?).0 Source: Topdown Charts 5. Valuations: While stocks may not have made a new all-time high, valuations are still at the upper end of the range. Bonds, on the other hand, are an entirely different story; cheap on my indicators. And the interesting thing is bonds are about as hated as it gets at the moment; just about every headline and tweet is bashing bonds. Sentiment signal? Source: Chart of the Week – Stocks vs Bonds 6. Big Short: This one is fascinating as it goes to show you can have a market and set of conditions that go to an extreme and persist there for some time, only to rapidly revert. Shorting is back. Whether this is directional calls on the stock market as a whole or expressing winner vs loser calls in the age of tariffs and policy shocks (e.g. healthcare) is certainly a matter of intrigue and probably a bit of both. 9. West Coast Eagles recruit Liam Baker learns fate for ramming James Peatling’s head into the turf West Coast Eagles recruit Liam Baker learns fate for ramming James Peatling’s head into the turf West Coast recruit Liam Baker has escaped a ban for an ugly forearm to the back of Adelaide midfielder James Peatling’s head on Sunday. Instead, the defender has been fined $3125 for ramming Peatling’s head into the Adelaide Oval grass by leaning down on him with his forearm. The ugly incident caused an aggressive melee in the dying stages of the blowout 66-point loss, with multiple Crows remonstrating with the former Tiger. The MRO had the option to charge Baker with serious misconduct and refer him to the tribunal but settled on a financial sanction. Essendon legend James Hird had a sterner take ahead of the verdict being handed down, labelling the Eagle’s action worse than pinning the arms in a tackle. “That’s the sort of thing that if you get three weeks for bumping … or tackling someone and pulling them down and mistiming, that (the Baker incident) is a deliberate act,” he told Nine. “That to me is worse than a tackle where you pull them behind and hit someone because it’s a deliberate act to try to, not so much hurt someone, but to influence someone. In a tackle, you make a mistake.” Seven players were charged with engaging in the melee with three Crows and four Eagles including Elijah Hewett, Bailey Williams and Jack Hutchinson fined a minimum of $1000. It’s the third time Williams has been handed a sanction for melees. Baker joined the Eagles via trade from Richmond, where he won back-to-back premierships in 2019 and 2020, for pick 14 and has become a key player. A suspension would have stretched the Eagles’ starting 22 to the limits with the club already without All-*********** defender Jeremy McGovern, who is set to face a concussion panel, star forward Jake Waterman, who dislocated his shoulder against the Crows, Jamie Cripps with a four-week knee injury, Elliot Yeo who is out indefinitely and Dom Sheed will miss the season with an ACL. 15. With assays pending, McLaren looks to Eucla titanium extensions With assays pending, McLaren looks to Eucla titanium extensions Titanium explorer McLaren Minerals has completed a phase one drilling program of 192 air core holes for 4067 metres, targeting its high-value McLaren titanium sands project in Western Australia’s Eucla Basin. The program identified extensions of prospective sediments outside the limits of historic resources in three key zones. The biggest southern zone is about 2600m wide and averages 10m thick, up to a 15m maximum. The north extension is 2200m wide and averages 14m thick and up to 23m. The smaller eastern extension of the central zone is 800m wide, with an average 20m thickness up to 23m. The program sampling was undertaken at 1m and 1.5m sample intervals. The company used 1m interval samples for all its infill drill holes and 1.5m intervals for metallurgical samples. The sediments identified in the new extensional areas develop beyond the limits of historic resource targeting and represent new test areas for future exploration. McLaren says the results from its phase one program demonstrate mineralisation continuity and provide the evidence it needs to support planned expansions of the current test work. The company says the significance of the multi-directional extension potential revealed in the new areas will be incorporated into the resource update when the sample results are returned, before a pre-feasibility study. While we have not yet received any assays, phase one has delivered strong confidence to our team regarding this project. The most recent interpretation not only confirms the integrity of our geological model but importantly, demonstrates the scale of the opportunity ahead. Defining this substantial potential for mineralisation outside the current resource boundary positions us well for future resource growth. The samples are being sent to mineral sands specialists Diamantina Laboratories in Perth and IHC Mining in Queensland. McLaren Minerals’ heavy mineral sands project covers 333 square kilometres on the western side of the Eucla Basin, adjacent to WA’s Fraser Range. It is about 5km south of the Eyre Highway and 350km by road to Esperance Port. The advanced-stage exploration project has a 2022 indicated and inferred mineral resource estimate of 280 million tonnes (Mt) averaging 4.8 per cent heavy minerals for 13.5Mt in-situ heavy minerals. McLaren says its geological interpretation after the program has significantly advanced its understanding of the deposit and its broader setting. The company says its specialist mineral sands geologists have confirmed key structural and lithological features, leading to increased confidence in its geological model. Mapping of the basement morphology has proved helpful in constraining the shape and position of sedimentary trap zones, improving definition of priority zones before planning future test work. Additional insights into the various sedimentary energy regimes have helped the company to identify high-potential areas for early future exploration within the current footprint and also across surrounding areas in the tenements. A clearer definition of the sedimentary interface is expected to improve the accuracy of drilling depth planning, which will avoid “over-drilling” in future programs. The insights McLaren gains from this approach are expected to contribute to lower exploration costs and greater operational efficiency, while preserving data quality. Looking at the considerable area of the three extensional zones and their respective thicknesses, scaled against the existing historic resource, McLaren and punters alike will likely all be watching for a significant imminent resource upgrade. 16. Trade winds to weaken as Kīlauea starts episode 23 Trade winds to weaken as Kīlauea starts episode 23 HONOLULU (KHON2) – Brief passing showers remain in the forecast this week, though, favoring windward and mountain areas in the overnight to early morning time *******, but are expected to remain mostly light with little rainfall accumulation. The lighter overall wind flow will allow a hybrid sea breeze and trade wind weather pattern to develop from Monday through Friday. Surface heating will enhance the sea breezes along the wind sheltered leeward areas. This will result in cloud buildups along the leeward mountain slopes each afternoon, with perhaps a stray shower or two into the early evening hours. Otherwise, mostly stable conditions should prevail. In the long-range forecast, some of the global models suggest a slight increase in shower trends. However, it will likely be subtle changes in the location and strength of some weak upper level lows that will drive our sensible weather for next weekend, so forecast confidence in shower activity is low this far out in time. 18. I’ve Been Replaying Assassin’s Creed Origins, And It’s Reminded Me What Shadows Is Sorely Lacking I’ve Been Replaying Assassin’s Creed Origins, And It’s Reminded Me What Shadows Is Sorely Lacking neutralgamer199210d ago For over a decade, the price of video games remained steady. We paid $50, then $60 for full, content-rich experiences. Developers found creative ways to deliver incredible games without charging more. From the PS2 era through the PS4/Xbox One, pricing consistency gave players a sense of value and trust. But then came the jump to $70 during the PS5 and Xbox Series X launches—justified by “rising development costs.” And now, barely four years later, we’re seeing $80 price tags becoming more common for standard editions. At this pace, by the time the next generation of consoles launches around 2027, $90 games could be the norm. And with a behemoth like GTA 6 on the horizon, a $99.99 base price wouldn’t be shocking at all. Yet we’ve also seen proof that this kind of pricing isn’t necessary for success. Look at the recent launches of Expedition 33 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Both released at $49.99 and have been met with strong sales and positive reception. These games show that there’s still plenty of room for high-quality, mid-budget (AA) titles that offer great value—and gamers are more than willing to support them at fair prices. But here’s the problem: the big publishers don’t care. If we as consumers keep paying for deluxe editions, early access, and overpriced base games, they’ll keep pushing the limits. They’re not going to back down unless we speak with our wallets—because that’s the only language they listen to. If they see record sales, they’ll take it as validation. It’s frustrating when these same companies report record-breaking revenue and profits—yet still complain about tariffs, still find excuses to raise prices, and still hand out ******* bonuses to their CEOs. If they’re doing so well financially, why are they passing more of the burden onto players? It’s because gaming has become the second biggest entertainment market in the world. And with that comes attention from hedge funds, investors, and boardrooms focused on short-term profit, not long-term player trust. To them, your passion is just a revenue stream. They care about quarterly numbers, not the health of the industry or the joy of the experience. And unless we—as players—take a stand, the greed won’t stop. The monetization will grow, the price hikes will continue, and the soul of gaming will keep slipping away. The choice is ours. We can either keep paying more for less, or we can push back. 19. Horizon to bump up kitty with $30M capital raise Horizon to bump up kitty with $30M capital raise Horizon Minerals has locked in a $30 million raise at 4.3 cents per share, aiming to bolster the company’s finances to complete refurbishment studies on its ****** Swan processing plant in Western Australia and fund a range of new exploration and resource drilling programs. The funds raised from local and offshore institutional investors will support drilling expenditure and engineering studies for its coveted ****** Swan plant, ahead of an expected influx of cash from its gold mining operations at Boorara and Phillips Find. The ****** Swan plant, acquired from Horizon’s merger with Poseidon Nickel, may become the jewel in Horizon’s crown. It will allow the company to control its processing operations and potentially ramp up the ore feed from myriad deposits scattered around the Kalgoorlie region. Engineering studies will be undertaken to support ****** Swan’s refurbishment. Horizon initially plans to repurpose the previous nickel plant into a gold processing facility. If the plant can be restarted, it may provide a significant boost to Horizon’s processing capacity without the company having to rely on toll-treating arrangements with local mills. A refurbished 2.2-million-tonnes-per-annum processing facility could potentially deliver Horizon a 100,000-ounce-a-year gold operation. An initial $11.8M will be raised in tranche one under the company’s available placement capacity through the issue of more than 218 million shares at 4.3c. A conditional placement for the remaining $18.2M from the issue of 422.823 million tranche two shares will be subject to shareholder approval at a general meeting expected to be held in July. In an encouraging sign for the company, each Horizon director plans to participate in the tranche two placement through the issue of shares for a total subscription value of $20,000 each, subject to shareholder approval. Management says the placement introduced several new institutional investors to its company register and will help it accelerate planned exploration and infill drilling programs. We are pleased with the support for the placement and welcome a number of highly credentialed institutional and sophisticated investors to the register. The company plans to test its Burbanks deposit for resource extensions, additional to an infill program for resource classification purposes. Similar drill programs will be undertaken at its Crake and Coote deposits. It further plans to plunge the drill bit into a range of targets, including Wilsons, Kestrel, Greater Boorara and Nimbus, and to test additional ground at Phillips Find. Funds are also planned to strengthen the company’s working capital position until significant ore is processed from Boorara, which may open the floodgates to a wave of cash with today’s gold price hovering near US$3341 (A$5117) per ounce. Retiring company debt is another possible option if sufficient funds remain available. The first tranche share placement is expected to settle on May 29, with shares issued on or about May 30. Horizon recently revealed an updated mineral resources summary that highlights a massive nickel boost from its recent merger with Poseidon. Some 422,000 tonnes of nickel metal now sit within the company’s mineral portfolio, which also includes 1.8 million ounces of gold scattered across a range of Goldfields deposits. The deposits include mining at Boorara and Phillips Find, generating significant levels of cash at today’s surging gold price. The merger with Poseidon delivered Horizon with a raft of promising nickel projects. The ****** Swan project stands out among a group, including the Silver Swan and Golden Swan deposits, the Silver Swan tailings resource and the Lake Johnston and Windarra projects. The resource summary also details a more than handy addition of 20.2M ounces of silver, 104,000t of zinc and 7800t of cobalt. Not wanting to be late to the gold party taking place, Horizon leapt into action to toll treat ore from two of its key gold deposits – Boorara, near Kalgoorlie’s Super Pit, and Phillips Find, north of Coolgardie. The first 37,000t of ore from its Phillips Find joint venture and 50,604t from its Boorara mine led to the company banking a wad of cash in March. The joint venture shared in $7.9M received from the processed Phillips Find parcel, while the Boorara ore generated $4.95M in revenue before treatment costs. Horizon appears to have the backing of some large players. Its share registry might generate even more interest if the gold price gets another leg-up. 21. S&P 500 EPS Growth May Flatline as Tariff Risks Mount Before Q2 Earnings S&P 500 EPS Growth May Flatline as Tariff Risks Mount Before Q2 Earnings Jamie Dimon was out this week with one of cassandric economic forecasts, and this time it had to do with earnings, with Jamie expecting a 0% S&P 500 expected EPS growth rate for Q2 ’25, by the time reporting starts in July ’25. He may not be wrong, but the way the “tariff” discussion has evolved, for the expected +10% S&P 500 EPS growth rate for Q2 ’25 to fall all the way to 0% by early July ’25, would be pretty extreme indeed, with the only instance I can think of that happening to that degree would have been Covid and the first 6 months of 2020. Source: LSEG This week in the 3rd column, of the ******-bordered areas, the Q3’25 trend in both S&P 500 EPS and revenue was added just to see how analysts are modeling for Q3’25, since it appears these two quarters will bear the brunt of the majority of any tariffs implemented. Looking at the above spreadsheet, since January 3rd, the 2nd quarter has seen more severe revisions than the third quarter, but some of that “severity” is partially due to the Q2’25 quarter being next to report, and historically, the upcoming quarter sees the harsher revisions. As someone who looks at this data religiously every weekend, be careful of staking an investment decision on it, since the next tweet could change the frequency and severity of revisions entirely. It’s a tough environment if you are quantitatively focused on earnings and data. It could all change with a tweetstorm. Apple EPS and Revenue Estimate Revisions: The first table above shows Apple’s (NASDAQ:) revenue revisions. Note how from 12/31/2023 to 12/31/2024, Apple’s expected 2025 total revenue fell $5 billion over the 12 months, but since 12/31/24, and as of 5/23/2025, Apple’s fiscal ’25 revenue revisions have fallen $7 billion. Apple’s EPS revisions are more interesting: rather than negative revenue revisions, Apple’s full-year 2025 EPS estimate is basically unchanged over the last 17 months, after rising nicely for the twelve calendar months of 2024. Fiscal 2026 and 2027 EPS see the same pattern i.e. upward revisions in 2024, but since 12/31/2024, steady downward revisions for all three fiscal years which have left EPS basically unchanged over the 17-month *******. Most of the headlines around Apple over the last 12 months have been AI-related (analysts critical of the seeming lack of Apple’s AI progress), while tariff issues have arisen in calendar ’25. Two things struck me about Apple: The Board of Director’s announced a $100 billion increase in the share repurchase authorization, with the April ’25 results and the stock fell after the earnings release. Also, these negative EPS revisions have a great weight on the S&P 500 since Apple’s “earnings weight” is ******* than it’s market cap weight in the S&P 500. Of the top 3 market cap weights currently in the S&P 500, Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:) and Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:) earnings weights are lower than their market cap weight, while Apple’s earnings weight is larger. UnitedHealth EPS and Revenue Revisions: The one aspect that struck me about Unitedhealth Group’s (NYSE:) EPS and revenue revisions, is that revenue revisions remained staunchly positive until mid-April ’25 and only since then have started to roll over, but notice how the analysts are still looking for y-o-y revenue growth for 2025, 2026 and 2027. The EPS estimates looked to peak last fall ’24 and then started to slowly decline. Having never owned or followed UNH, I have no opinion on the stock or its outlook. Bespoke had a note on UNH in the past few weeks when the stock looked to be bottoming, noting that the corporate bonds were trading much better than the common stock, which is definitely a credit positive. Conclusion: Long weekends are a good time to catch up on market articles. There are a few more in the pipeline for this weekend. A note was sent to clients Thursday or Friday, saying that any pullback in the S&P 500 would / could find support at the 5,500 area for the S&P 500 since it’s roughly the 50% point of the S&P 500’s trading range from the mid-February ’25 highs to the April lows for the S&P 500. Credit spreads actually rose a smidge this past week, after tightening smartly since early April ’25. More to come over the weekend. WWE via Getty Images It’s unclear exactly why DeSantis was booed. DeSantis’ second and final term as governor of the Sunshine State will end in January 2027. He has tipped his wife, Casey DeSantis, as his successor. President Donald Trump, however, has backed Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) for the role, the election for which will be contested next fall. Trump endorsed DeSantis in his 2018 campaign, with DeSantis then taking on Trump in the 2024 primaries. Trump won and DeSantis then endorsed his former rival in the general. 24. Man who posted deepfake images of prominent *********** women could face $450,000 penalty | Deepfake Man who posted deepfake images of prominent *********** women could face $450,000 penalty | Deepfake The online safety regulator wants a $450,000 maximum penalty imposed on a man who posted deepfake images of prominent *********** women to a website, in the first case of its kind heard in an *********** court. The eSafety commissioner has launched proceedings against Anthony Rotondo over his failure to remove “intimate images” of several prominent *********** women from a deepfake ************ website. The federal court has kept the names of the women confidential. Rotondo initially refused to comply with the order while he was based in the Philippines, the court heard, but the commissioner launched the case once he returned to Australia. Rotondo posted the images to the MrDeepFakes website, which has since been shut down. In December 2023, Rotondo was fined for contempt of court, after admitting he breached court orders by not removing the imagery. He later shared his password so the deepfake images could be removed. A spokesperson for the eSafety commissioner said the regulator was seeking between $400,000 and $450,000 for the breaches of the Online Safety Act. The spokesperson said the penalty submission reflected the seriousness of the breaches “and the significant impacts on the women targeted”. “The penalty will deter others from engaging in such harmful conduct,” they said. eSafety said the non-consensual creation and sharing of explicit deepfake images caused significant psychological and emotional distress for victims. The penalties hearing was held on Monday, and the court has reserved its decision. Separately, federal criminal laws were passed in 2024 to combat explicit deepfakes. eSafety commissioner Julie Inman Grant during Senate estimates at Parliament House. Photograph: Mick Tsikas/AAP In her opening statement to the Senate committee reviewing the bill in July last year, the eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, said deepfakes had increased on the internet by 550% since 2019, and pornographic videos made up 99% of the deepfake material online, with 99% of that imagery of women and girls. “Deepfake image based abuse is not only becoming more prevalent but is also very gendered and incredibly distressing to the victim-survivor,” Inman Grant said. “Shockingly, thousands of open-source AI apps like these have proliferated online and are often free and easy to use by anyone with a smartphone. “So these apps make it simple and cost-free for the perpetrator, while the cost to the target is one of lingering and incalculable devastation.” Source link #Man #posted #deepfake #images #prominent #*********** #women #face #penalty #Deepfake Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
