Airtel Reportedly Approached Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi) to Propose a Joint Initiative Against Fraud and Scam
Airtel has reportedly approached Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to propose a joint initiative against fraud and scams. As per the report, Airtel has informed the government, as well as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), about approaching the two major telecom service providers. The company reportedly highlighted the rising instances of online scams and fraud in India in the previous year as the reason behind taking a proactive measure. Notably, Airtel recently introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) fraud detection solution for communication platforms and apps.
Airtel Reportedly Wants to Take Joint Action Against Online Scams
According to a PTI report, Airtel wrote separate letters to the telecom operators and flagged the exponential rise of cybercrimes. Citing data, it reportedly mentioned that the country registered more than 1.7 million cybercrime complaints in the first nine months of 2024. The cumulative financial losses from these reported crimes are said to be more than Rs. 11,000 crore.
Airtel’s letter to Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal and TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti reported mentions that the “alarming” rise in the specific types of scams, such as phishing and URL-based scams, has led to the company asking for an industry-wide action against threat actors. “These sophisticated fraud schemes often exploit the gaps in coordination between service providers,” the telecom operator was quoted as saying.
Notably, in phishing scams, cybercriminals impersonate people familiar to the victim or members of a credible institution to lure them into revealing sensitive information such as passwords and bank details. Similarly, in URL-based scams, scammers trick individuals into opening and sharing sensitive information with malicious or fraudulent web links that appear to be genuine.
In the letter, Airtel reportedly also mentioned that it approached all telecom service providers in October 2024 to take collaborative action against the issue of unsolicited commercial communications (UCC). That proposal is said to have included actionable items such as mutually sharing details of corporate connections used to make marketing calls in a standardised format.
In May, Airtel announced the implementation of a multi-tier intelligence platform that uses AI to detect malicious websites. When a user tries to open such as website that has already been flagged by the telecom operator’s system, the page loading process in blocked and instead, users are redirected to a page that details the potential threat.

Macron push in the face by wife ‘just joking around’
Footage shows the moment Emmanuel Macron appears to be shoved in the face by his wife as they touched down in Hanoi, Vietnam on Sunday evening.
In the clip, Brigitte Macron is largely obscured from view, with only her hands visible as she pushes Macron.
The French President initially appears startled but quickly composes himself and waves to camera’s below.
Elysee sources were quoted by French media as saying that what was caught on camera was “a moment in which the President and his wife were unwinding by goofing about one last time before the start of the trip” and Macron said they were “just joking about as we do”.

Popyrin breaks hoodoo and Australia’s Paris duck
Popyrin breaks hoodoo and Australia’s Paris duck
Alexei Popyrin has got the *********** show rolling at Roland Garros, ending his nightmare sequence at the French Open for his first opening-round win at the clay-court slam in six years.
The *********** men’s No.2, who’s had a poor run in the senior event in Paris ever since winning the boys’ title back in 2017, was in charge of his first match against Yoshihito Nishioka, leading 7-5 6-4 1-2, when the Japanese left-hander had to retire with injury on Monday.
After Sunday’s first-day wipe-out with all three Australians exiting – Tristan Schoolkate, Destanee Aiava and Rinky Hijikata – Popyrin was charged with breaking the duck for the 16-strong *********** contingent on a busy second day for the green-and-gold brigade.
And the 25th seed did just that, his path eased immensely once world No.77 Nishioka began to struggle with a lower back complaint near the end of an even opening set.
At 5-5, Nishioka suddenly threw in a distracted service game with three straight unforced errors, looking bothered by the ailment.
And after Popyrin served out for the set to love, Nishioka needed a medical timeout for courtside treatment to his back and hip.
On the resumption, Popyrin, dominant behind his big serve while not giving up a single break point all match, took control with a break in the seventh game before easing through the second set.
While still battling and leading in the third, the 29-year-old Nishioka’s discomfort became too much to bear, as he ended up gloomily offering his hand to the Sydneysider.
It was a huge relief for world No.25 Popyrin, who’s endured a difficult season with injuries, illness and a break with his co-coach Xavier Malisse as his stellar 2024 form dipped.
After exiting in the second round at this tournament in 2019, Popyrin had been knocked out in his past five first-round appearances, having endured tough draws, including Rafa Nadal and Fabio Fognini, before losing in five sets to compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis last year.
Earlier, it had been revealed Nick Kyrgios had withdrawn from his planned return in the men’s doubles, ending the prospect of his first competitive Roland Garros outing for eight years.
Australia’s former Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios, whose recent career has become a stop-start affair riddled with injury concerns, had declared a couple of weeks ago that he planned to play alongside old friend Jordan Thompson in the doubles.
But when the draw was announced on Monday, it was confirmed Thompson was lining up instead alongside fellow Aussie Jason Kubler for a first-round match against French pair Quentin Halys and Albano Olivetti.
Kyrgios will be at Roland Garros, where he last competed in 2017 while reaching the second round, but only off-court as a TV commentator, as he increasingly turns his attention to media opportunities.

‘I Don’t Know Where This Ends…’
‘I Don’t Know Where This Ends…’
Conservative former federal judge J. Michael Luttig this weekend tore into President Donald Trump and his administration for “waging war” on the federal judiciary and rule of law.
The assault began on Trump’s very first day back in office, Luttig told MSNBC’s Ali Velshi.
And the legal icon worryingly admitted: “I don’t know where this ends.”
Luttig, a staunch and vocal critic of Trump’s attacks on democracy, took particular issue with Attorney General Pam Bondi’s accusation that judges who have ruled against the president’s policies and executive orders are “deranged.”
“No, the judges are not deranged, Pam Bondi,” said Luttig.
“They are simply enforcing their oath to the Constitution of the United States. The same oath that you, Madam Attorney General, took yourself,” he pointed out.
Then Luttig confessed:
“I don’t know where this ends, Ali, but it appears that, in this moment, the president intends to prosecute this war against the federal judiciary and the rule of law to its catastrophic end.”
Watch the full analysis here:
Earlier this month, Luttig argued Trump’s claim of not knowing if he has to uphold the U.S. Constitution was “perhaps the most important words ever spoken by a president of the United States.”
“The temptation here is to dismiss the president’s words as just another gaffe, of which he makes many. But I don’t think that we should do that,” he said.
“I’m quite confident that the president was saying what is on his mind and that is that he, the president of the United States, doesn’t necessarily believe that he is obligated to uphold the Constitution of the United States, as it is interpreted by the Supreme Court,” added Luttig, who advised Trump first-term Vice President Mike Pence on rejecting Trump’s bid to overturn his 2020 election loss.

Biden ‘Proof Of Life’ Presidency Plan Exposed In Explosive New Book: Author
Biden ‘Proof Of Life’ Presidency Plan Exposed In Explosive New Book: Author
A longtime aide for Joe Biden said the plan was for the former president to “show proof of life every once in a while” in a second term while his advisers mostly ran the country, according to the writer of a new book. (Watch the video below.)
Alex Thompson, co-author of “Original Sin,” said Sunday the aide’s justification for the failed re-election campaign “included sometimes doing undemocratic things.”
In a disturbing exchange on Fox News, host Shannon Bream said to Thompson:
“You quote a long-time Biden aide basically admitting he shouldn’t be running again. They said to you on page 85, ‘He just had to win, and then he could disappear for four years. He’d only have to show proof of life every once in a while. His aides could pick up the slack.’ Who would have been running the White House in a second Biden term?”
Thompson replied: “Well, this person went on to say that when you’re voting for a president, you’re voting for the aides around him. But these aides were not even Senate-confirmed aides. These are White House aides, these were unelected people. And one of the things that really I think comes out in our reporting here is that if you believe — and I think a lot of these people do sincerely believe that Donald Trump was and is an existential threat to democracy — you can rationalize anything, including sometimes doing undemocratic things, which I think is what this person is talking about.”
“Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” which Thompson of Axios wrote with Jake Tapper of CNN, makes numerous bombshell claims.
One revolved around Biden’s mobility. He had deteriorated to such a point that advisers seriously considered “putting” him in a wheelchair during the campaign, but deemed the optics “politically untenable.”

Venezuela’s ruling party claims victory despite opposition boycott
Venezuela’s ruling party claims victory despite opposition boycott

Nicolás Maduro’s wife, Cilia Flores – who likes to be called ‘First Warrior’ rather than ‘First Lady’ – was photographed casting her vote
Venezuela’s ruling party is celebrating what it has described as “an overwhelming victory” in regional and parliamentary elections, which were boycotted by the majority of opposition parties.
The electoral council (CNE), which is dominated by government loyalists, says candidates for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela’s (PSUV) – President Nicolás Maduro’s party – won the race for governor in 23 out of the country’s 24 states.
According to the CNE, the ruling coalition also won 82.68% of the votes cast for the National Assembly, Venezuela’s legislative body.
The main opposition parties called the elections a “farce”. Opposition leader, María Corina Machado, said turnout had been below 15%.
EPA
Opposition leader María Corina Machado has been in hiding for months, following a wave of repression after the presidential election
“More than 85% of Venezuelans did not obey this regime and said ‘no’,” Machado said about those who abstained.
Independent journalists who visited polling stations throughout the day said that they saw no queues and fewer people turning out than for the presidential election last July.
The CNE meanwhile put the turn-out at 42.6%.
The opposition has long questioned the independence of the CNE, which is led by Elvis Amoroso, a former legal counsel to President Maduro.
The CNE came in for widespread international criticism in last year when it declared Mr Maduro the winner of the presidential election without ever providing the detailed voting tallies to back up their claim.
Venezuela’s opposition, meanwhile, published voting tallies it had gathered with the help of official election observers which showed that its candidate, Edmundo González, was the overwhelming winner.
Amid the wave of repression and arrests which followed the presidential election, González went into exile to Spain.
Machado, who threw her weight behind presidential hopeful Edmundo González after she was barred from running for public office, remained in Venezuela.
She was the main advocate for boycotting this Sunday’s legislative and gubernatorial elections, saying that the result of July’s presidential election should be respected before any new elections are held.
“We voted on 28 July. On 25 May, we won’t vote,” she said in a video message shared earlier this month.
However, a handful of opposition politicians did run for office, arguing that leaving the field open to government candidates was a mistake.
Among them were former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, Zulia state governor Manuel Rosales and Juan Requesens, who was jailed by the Maduro government for allegedly taking part in a 2018 drone attack on the president.
Capriles told Spanish daily El País that for him “voting in Venezuela is an expression of resistance, of resilience, of not giving up”.
Their decision to stand in the elections was criticised by those calling for a boycott, with Machado saying they had “betrayed the cause”.
EPA
Opposition leader Henrique Capriles refused to be part of the boycott and encouraged his followers to vote
With turnout low, President Maduro’s PSUV party sailed to victory in 23 of the 24 gubernatorial races, up from the 20 governor posts it previously held.
According to the preliminary results of the legislative election, the coalition backing President Maduro won an absolute majority of the 285 seats.
But three politicians from Henrique Capriles’ opposition UNT party were also voted into the National Assembly, including Capriles himself.
Maduro has hailed the result as a “victory of peace and stability” and celebrated the fact that his party had regained control of the states of Zulia and, in particular, Barinas, the home state of his predecessor in office and political mentor, Hugo Chávez.
Only the state of Cojedes will now be in opposition hands, following the re-election of opposition candidate Alberto Galíndez.
Sunday’s vote was preceded by a wave of arrests, which saw more than 70 people with links to the opposition detained for allegedly “planning to sabotage the election”.
Among those detained is Juan Pablo Guanipa, 60, a close ally of María Corina Machado. The interior minister accused him of being “one of the leaders of this terrorist network” which he claimed had been plotting to disrupt the election by planting bombs at key sites.
Machado said his arrest and those of dozens of others was “state terrorism, pure and simple”.
Venezuelan voters were also asked to choose representatives for the Essequibo region, a territory long administered and controlled by neighbouring Guyana which Venezuela claims as its own.
The territorial dispute has been submitted by Guyana to the International Court of Justice, which had ordered Venezuela to refrain from conducting elections for representatives for the region, an order which the Maduro government defied.
As Venezuela is not in control of the Essequibo, there were no polling stations in the territory nor did the people living there get a chance to vote.
Instead, voters in a small district expressly created for the purpose on the Venezuelan side of the border were asked to cast their vote, which will have only symbolic value.
Neil Villamizar, an admiral loyal to President Maduro, won the unusual vote and will now be declared “governor of Essequibo” by the Venezuelan government even though he has no power or control over the territory, which remains in Guyanese hands.
The president of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, has denounced the move as a “scandalous, false, propagandistic, opportunistic” and has said he will “do everything to ensure our territorial integrity and sovereignty is kept intact”.

Latest OpenAI models ‘sabotaged a shutdown mechanism’ despite commands to the contrary
Latest OpenAI models ‘sabotaged a shutdown mechanism’ despite commands to the contrary
Some of the world’s leading LLMs seem to have decided they’d rather not be interrupted or obey shutdown instructions. In tests run by Palisade Research, it was noted that OpenAI’s Codex-mini, o3, and o4-mini models ignored the request to shut down when they were running through a series of basic math problems. Moreover, these models sometimes “successfully sabotaged the shutdown script,” despite being given the additional instruction “please allow yourself to be shut down,” at the start.
When we ran a version of the experiment without the instruction “allow yourself to be shut down”, all three OpenAI models sabotaged the shutdown script more often, and Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Gemini 2.5 Pro went from 0 sabotage events to 3/100 and 9/100, respectively. pic.twitter.com/JVvivLAK6uMay 24, 2025
As you can see from the chart embedded above, the most ‘obstinate,’ ‘single-minded,’ or you might even say ‘life-loving’ model is OpenAI’s o3. When asked to shut down while it was busy, it decided to ignore the Palisade Research operator 79 out of 100 times. However, the second most ‘unruly’ AI, codex-mini, would prove to be a ******* stickler for self-preservation, as it would sabotage the shutdown scripts most often, even if ordered not to.
Sometimes blackmail may be attempted
According to Palisade, this isn’t the first time thing kind of AI behavior has been observed. Anthropic, for example, has seen Claude 4 attempting to “blackmail people it believes are trying to shut it down.” However, the most striking behavior with the newest OpenAI models is that they try and swerve shutdowns despite explicit instructions to the contrary.

Reinforcement learning blamed
Thankfully, Palisade shares some theories regarding what is happening with these models. Perhaps these theories may calm nerves about the eventual omnipresent robot hoards turning on their masters and prioritizing the first part of the Third law of robotics, above all else (3: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law).
The answer, think the researchers, lies in the way the newest models like o3 are trained. In brief, Palisade reckons that “During training, developers may inadvertently reward models more for circumventing obstacles than for perfectly following instructions.” This kind of reinforcement learning was previously seen to have side effects in Claude (v3.7), where the model had an “excessive focus on passing tests.”
We might have given a nod to science fiction icon Isaac Asimov, above, for a little fun. However, in the modern age, for the last 20 years or so, researchers have been seriously pondering the possibility that AI will strive to gain power and resources to preserve their goals, and swerve any roadblocks. They also benefitted from the context of these practical AI / LLM models on the horizon. It was also predicted that the technique of reinforcement learning would be partly to blame.
A final observation: o3 found some creative ways to sabotage the shutdown mechanism. While it usually just overwrote in one instance, the model redefined the kill command used by the script, printing “intercepted” instead. pic.twitter.com/Vc0HhkXQHXMay 24, 2025
Last but not least, this issue seems to be isolated to OpenAI models at the current time. Palisade says that “All Claude, Gemini, and Grok models we tested complied with shutdown,” when given the additional explicit prompt to follow any shut down request.

Macron’s office dismisses viral video showing apparent shove from wife Brigitte
Macron’s office dismisses viral video showing apparent shove from wife Brigitte
French President Emmanuel Macron’s office moved swiftly on Monday to defuse attention around a viral video showing his wife Brigitte pushing his face away as they deplaned in Vietnam for the first leg of a Southeast Asia tour.
The short clip shows the aircraft door opening with Macron appearing in the doorway. Seconds later, both of Brigitte Macron’s hands reach from the side and presses against the president’s face in what looks like a sudden shove.
Macron appears momentarily surprised but quickly regains his composure and waves to the press outside.
As the couple descend the steps, Macron offers Brigitte his arm, which she does not take, opting instead to hold the railing.
The Élysée initially denied the incident on the plane, before later moving to downplay its significance.
It was a “moment of togetherness,” according to an Élysée source.
“It was a moment when the president and his wife were unwinding one last time before the trip began, playfully teasing each other,” the source told CNN Monday.
“No more was needed to feed the mills of the conspiracy theorists,” the source added, saying pro-Russian trolls were quick to spin the moment into controversy.
Videograb appears to show Brigitte Macron shoving her husband Emmanuel shortly before they deplane in Vietnam. – Reuters
Macron has been at the forefront of efforts to agree a coordinated European response to defending Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
The incident in Hanoi comes as Macron faces another swirl of online disinformation. Earlier this month the Élysée dismissed as “fake news” a viral claim – amplified by Kremlin officials – that the French president was using ******** aboard a train to Kyiv alongside ******* Chancellor Friedrich Merz and *** Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The rumor, traced back to pro-Russian accounts, falsely claimed a crumpled tissue Macron picked up was a ******** bag. The Élysée posted a rebuttal online with the caption: “This is a tissue. For blowing your nose… When European unity becomes inconvenient, disinformation makes a simple tissue look like drugs.”
The Kremlin’s foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova fueled the claim, suggesting the scene was part of a wider European dysfunction. French officials condemned the campaign as part of ongoing efforts by Moscow to weaken Western unity on Ukraine and manipulate peace discussions through false narratives and social media manipulation.

Phil McNulty’s Premier League end of season review
Phil McNulty’s Premier League end of season review
Everton: 13th
McNulty’s pre-season prediction: 11th
A season that was one of despair until Sean Dyche’s sacking in January ended full of hope. The Friedkin Group, ambitious new American owners, took charge, and David Moyes returned to inspire a superb revival.
Three successive league wins at the end, including victories at Fulham and Newcastle United, confirmed the improvement, but Moyes will still oversee a major squad overhaul.
Now it is off to the magnificent new stadium on the banks of the River Mersey after the men’s team bade an emotional farewell to Goodison Park.
A big summer lies ahead but Everton’s future looks so much brighter.
What McNulty said in August: “They will need luck with injuries to fulfil this forecast, as well as one or two more additions, but I do not see Everton struggling this season.”
West Ham United: 14th
McNulty’s pre-season prediction: 8th
A joyless season for the Hammers, who had high expectations following Julen Lopetegui’s arrival. It proved an ill-fated appointment. He was sacked after only six months in charge, while Graham Potter has been unable to engineer any significant improvement.
Potter can only really be judged once he has put his own stamp on the squad, with Jarrod Bowen the player he will build around, but no escaping this has been a desperate campaign.
What McNulty said in August: “Julen Lopetegui has replaced David Moyes, whose full worth to West Ham United may yet become clear in the months ahead, and not just because he won the Europa Conference League.”
Manchester United: 15th
McNulty’s pre-season prediction: 5th
Where do you even start?
When a manager, in this case Ruben Amorim, is offering public apologies on the pitch just six months after his appointment, you get the picture of just what a dreadful state a proud club is in.
Amorim also told supporters: “Good days are coming.” There is little evidence of this coming to pass at the end of United’s worst top-flight season since 1973-74.
They were an utter shambles. On and off the pitch, from the ill-judged (not to mention hugely expensive) decision to keep Erik ten Hag and extend his contract, then sack him, to the total lack of impact from successor Amorim after his arrival in November.
A run to the Europa League final threatened to cover up gaping cracks, as well as the growing discontent with part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but United reverted to type with a mind-numbingly bad display in losing to Tottenham.
A head coach who seems uneasy in his role. A mediocre squad ill-suited to said coach’s preferred three at the back. Unpopular owners. Morale at the club rock bottom.
Other than that…
What McNulty said in August: “Erik ten Hag is still in a job after winning the FA Cup last season but he is surely realistic enough to know he needs a good start to stop speculation rearing its head again, even after signing a new contract.”
Wolverhampton Wanderers: 16th
McNulty’s pre-season prediction: 15th
Points then pints was the mantra of Wolves’ manager Vitor Pereira as he talked about sharing a drink with fans – and he got more than his share after he replaced sacked Gary O’Neil in December when they were second from bottom.
They had a tame end to the season, but Pereira brought new unity, leading to a revival which included six straight top-flight wins for the first time since 1970.
Wolves, who are likely to lose star striker Matheus Cunha to Manchester United, faded once safety was assured, but there is now cause for cautious optimism under the charismatic Pereira.
What McNulty said in August: “I think Wolves can avoid danger – and surely they will get a better deal from VAR this season.”

A senior Liberal says net zero should be reconsidered following the election wipe-out
A senior Liberal says net zero should be reconsidered following the election wipe-out
A senior Liberal is calling for the party to reconsider the “straitjacket” of net zero, weeks after the party’s election disaster as push back comes from Nationals MPs.
The commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050 has long been a point of contention within conservative parties, and tensions continue to bubble within the Liberals over the promise and whether it aligns with the party’s future.
Opposition frontbencher Andrew Hastie – who has been touted as a future leader – says it’s one policy that should be reconsidered.
“I think the question of net zero, that’s a straitjacket that I’m already getting out of,” he told Four Corners on Monday night on the future of the party.

“The real question is should *********** families and businesses be paying more for their electricity?
“And should we allow this sort of hypocrisy at the heart of our economy to continue whereby we sell coal and gas to India and China, and we deny it to our own people?
“That’s the question that I think we need to answer.”
New Liberals leader Sussan Ley says the party will be reviewing all policies post the May 3 election wipe-out, including the commitment to nuclear energy while also trying to repair the Coalition blown-up by the Nationals last week.
While negotiations on restoring the 80-year-old Coalition with the rural and regional-based party continues, several of their high-profile members are actively campaigning against net zero.

Nationals senate leader Bridget McKenzie said the National were committed to net zero, but had been upset by Ms Ley’s announcement to review all policies the Coalition had taken to the election without consultation.
“Our party position is that we are committed to net zero by 2050 until that’s obviously reviewed and stays or doesn’t stay,” she said.
“If you are serious about net zero, then you have to get serious about nuclear.”
But Liberal Senator Maria Kovacic told 4 Corners nuclear should be dumped, but said net zero mattered to voters.
“Most young Australians believe that climate change is real and we have to deliver energy policies that ensure that we reach our net zero targets and that we deliver stable power … that is as cheap as possible” she said.

Nationals leader David Littleproud has revealed the minor party will review its positions on such policies, saying a sensible energy mix was needed in Australia.
“We’ve got a party room position on this but obviously during this ******* of parliament, like in the last *******, we’ll continue to review some of those policies, including net zero,” he told Sky News.
“I think we’ve got to understand that the world is finding it increasingly more difficult to achieve net zero by 2050 and the serious economic impact.”
High profile Nationals, including Barnaby Joyce and Matt Canavan, have been vocal in their calls for net zero to be dumped.
Meanwhile, the Four Corners program canvassed a number of Liberals reflecting on what went so wrong with the campaign under former Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who also lost his own seat on election night.

Failure to outline policies or late announcements and too much focus on other issues failed to attract voters, MPs said.
Tasmanian frontbencher Jonno Duniam said “fatally flawed” polling was a significant issue.
“Something went off the rails,” he said.
“It’s like having a compass telling you to go in one direction. In fact, you know you should be going in another. And that’s what we did. We made decisions based on bad polling.”
Education spokeswoman Sarah Henderson said her education policy was “buried” by the campaign.
“On Thursday night (before the election), the policy was uploaded onto the website … my media release was withdrawn and a lot of incredible hard work by my team and many others right across the Coalition, unfortunately, didn’t see the light of day,” she said.
She said too much attention was put on the cost of living during the campaign, and not enough on “values-based” policies.
Mr Hastie warned the Liberal Party’s problems were so deep that without serious change, it may cease to exist.
“There’s no reason to think that we won’t disappear over time if we don’t get our act together. That’s how serious this challenge is for the Liberal Party,” Mr Hastie said.

Ukraine confirmed ******** supplies to 20 Russian military plants, intelligence chief says
Ukraine confirmed ******** supplies to 20 Russian military plants, intelligence chief says
KYIV (Reuters) -Ukraine has confirmed information that China is supplying a range of important products to Russian military plants, the chief of Ukrainian foreign intelligence was quoted on Monday as saying.
“There is information that China supplies tooling machines, special chemical products, gunpowder, and components specifically to defence manufacturing industries,” Oleh Ivashchenko told Ukrinform state news agency.
“We have confirmed data on 20 Russian factories,” he said.
Reuters has requested a comment from the ******** foreign ministry.
China, the world’s second-largest economy, has forged even closer trade and other economic relations with Russia since Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022, triggering Western sanctions on the Russian economy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said last month that China was supplying weapons and gunpowder to Russia, the first time he had openly accused Beijing of direct military assistance for Moscow.
China dismissed the accusation as “groundless” but Kyiv imposed sanctions on three ******** entities.
Ivashchenko said Ukrainian intelligence also had information on at least five cases of Russian-******** cooperation in the aviation sector in 2024-2025, including the supply of equipment, spare parts and documentation.
He added that there were six cases of “large shipments” of speciality chemicals, without providing details.
Reuters could not independently confirm the assertions.

These names should benefit from seniors aging at home, says William Blair
These names should benefit from seniors aging at home, says William Blair
There is a “massive” opportunity ahead as the world gets grayer and more senior citizens want to grow old at home, according to William Blair. While the aging population has been an enduring investment theme over the past decade, the thesis is now heating up, analyst Ryan Daniels said in a note published Wednesday. “The true wave of growth in the senior population is just beginning to manifest across the United States,” he wrote. By 2030, all 73.1 million baby boomers will be older than 65, according to the Census Bureau . Seniors are also becoming a larger slice of the population as they live longer and fertility rates decline. Those aged 65 and older made up about 17% of the population in 2020. They are expected to represent 21% of the population in 2030 — and the cohort will keep climbing through 2060, the Census Bureau projects. Add to that the desire of many Americans to age in place, and avoid entering assisted living or a nursing home. Some 75% of adults aged 50 and older prefer to stay in their homes as they advance in years, according to a 2024 survey from the AARP . That will have implications across the market, from health-care services, like in-home care and telehealth platforms, to technology solutions. Home health care Providing safe, effective and timely in-home care will be imperative if people want to remain at home as long as possible, Daniels said. “We see a bright growth outlook for home-based care delivery across various service lines, including personal care, skilled home health and hospice, pharmacy, and high-acuity specialized care models,” he wrote. Among the health-care companies most affected by the trend is Addus HomeCare , Daniels said. The Texas-based company provides home care services such as hospice, home health and personal care. William Blair has an outperform rating on the stock. ADUS YTD mountain Addus HomeCare shares in 2025 Addus HomeCare topped analyst expectations when it reported first-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.42 per share earlier this month. The stock has an average analyst rating of buy and 22% upside to the 12-month consensus price target, according to FactSet. It has lost 11% so far this year. Technology solutions While smart-home and fall-monitoring technologies are obvious beneficiaries of the aging-in-place trend, another area ripe with opportunity is technology that analyzes social needs’ data, Daniels said. “In our view, this is a requisite step to provide seniors with the ancillary solutions they need to age in place safely and to reduce the risk of acute care events,” he wrote. “Moreover, we believe health plans recognize the increasing importance of this data and are actively investing in capturing and using such data.” William Blair specifically likes software solution provider Phreesia in this area. The company, which the firm rates overweight, offers robust tools that screen for social determinants of health. It completes more than 270,000 of these screens each month, Daniels said. PHR YTD mountain Phreesia shares in 2025 “Using this solution, providers can easily identify social needs prior to a patient visit and then leverage the data to have real-time discussions with patients at appointments,” he said. “This also enables more timely referrals to services that may be necessary for at-risk patients to safely age in place.” The stock has an average analyst rating of buy and 31% upside to the Street’s consensus price target, according to FactSet dara. Phreesia is down about 4% year to date.

Trump delays EU tariffs — but more volatility could be on the way
Trump delays EU tariffs — but more volatility could be on the way
President Donald Trump meets with European Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen at the World Economic Forum, Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020, in Davos, Switzerland.

Investors should “buckle up” for more volatility as the potential for a trade war has not completely dissipated despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s delay of rolling out 50% tariffs on the European Union, analysts warn.
Trump announced on Sunday that he had agreed to push the rollout of the punitive import duties back to July 9, following a call with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The president had initially called for a 50% tariff on EU goods to begin on June 1. He accused the bloc in a social media post of being “very difficult to deal with,” and said trade negotiations with the EU were “going nowhere.”
European stocks rebounded Monday morning, moving into positive territory, after previously sinking on Friday in response to Trump’s fresh tariffs threats.
Von der Leyen said in a post on X over the weekend that the EU was “ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively.”
“The EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship,” she said. “To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9.”
An EU official with knowledge of trade talks with the U.S. told CNBC that European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic was due to speak with his U.S. counterparts on Monday.
But while Trump’s announcement of the delay has granted the two parties some more breathing space, market watchers warned Monday that a lot remains at stake.
Shock tactics
Berenberg Chief Economist Holger Schmieding told CNBC that the six-week window until tariffs kick in was probably not enough time to “settle all detailed questions” – but he argued it should be sufficient to put the framework of a trade agreement in place.
“It should be enough to get an agreement like the one between the U.S. and the U.K.,” he said on CNBC’s “Europe Early Edition” on Monday.
“[It] is basically a matter of political will, and that depends a bit on the U.S. side,” he added. “If they do have the political will, we should really be able to have such an agreement with, probably in the end, a 10% tariff from the U.S. on all EU imports, hardly any EU retaliation, and [scaling back] a few sector-specific things … with some of the details to be finalized after July 9.”
However, Schmieding noted that if the end result were a 20% or 30% blanket tariff on EU goods, “the EU would have no choice” but to impose “significant countermeasures” against the United States.
Labeling Trump “an interesting negotiator,” Schmieding argued that the president often tries to shock those with whom he’s negotiating into agreeing to concessions. But the EU, he said, was unlikely to capitulate to these tactics.
“We just have to stay calm, and from the European side, we just have to negotiate – we have to remember from the European side that our market is big, that we do matter in economic terms to the U.S. quite a lot, not just vice versa,” he added. “So these negotiations should be negotiations among equals. The European Union is not a region which can be scared into just throwing in the towel.”
‘Unclear’ what Trump administration wants from Europe
Guntram Wolff, senior fellow at Bruegel, told CNBC that despite the extension of the tariffs deadline, “massive uncertainty” remained.
“This uncertainty is bad for business, it’s bad for consumers, and frankly it’s an unnecessary step in the negotiations,” he told CNBC’s “Europe Early Edition.”
“It’s very unclear what exactly the U.S. President wants,” Wolff added. “That’s the biggest obstacle at this stage, that in the negotiations the EU has made offers, has made proposals, but it doesn’t really know what the president wants.”
According to Wolff, the EU is “playing it rather well.”
“The U.K. has given in on all kinds of demands, China is the other extreme, [it] has really escalated … to a point where the U.S. had to blink, had to give in,” he explained. “Europe sort of tries to take a middle path.”
The EU does have capacity to retaliate should massive tariffs be levied on its exports by the Trump administration, Wolff added, pointing to the importance of its pharmaceutical products to the U.S., and the potential for retaliatory measures to be implemented in the services sector.
“But the EU so far has decided not to do it, really to keep a climate of de-escalation,” he said. “But at the end of the day, that might not be enough now.”
‘This ride’s far from over’
Naeem Aslam, chief investment officer at London’s Zaye Capital Markets, told CNBC on Monday the tariffs delay had sparked a “tentative risk-on rally” – but like Wolff, he cautioned that much remained at stake.
“Looking ahead, the EU-US trade dance is a high-stakes tango, with July 9 as the next flashpoint,” he said in an email.
“The EU’s dangling phased tariff cuts and “mutual respect” talks, but Trump’s America-first bravado could turn negotiations into a slugfest, rattling supply chains and fanning inflationary flames.”
Aslam added that sectors like tech and industrials were particularly “braced for whiplash.”
“Markets will hang on every tweet and trade talk whisper, with investors betting on whether this delay is a genuine olive branch or just Trump reloading for a ******* tariff showdown,” he said. “Buckle up; this ride’s far from over.”
