  5. Who’s really fixing your roof? Who’s really fixing your roof? The cost of a roof replacement is a major investment, so you want to be sure you’re hiring the right roofing company for the job. While you’re mulling over roofing materials and checking credentials, make sure to ask who will actually be doing the work: Does the company use an in-house crew or hire subcontractors? The answer can affect your roof’s quality, cost and timeline. Here’s what to know. What to know about in-house roofing crews Two roofers installing a new roof Some companies use in-house roofing crews, which means they’re full-time, W-2 employees, not temporary 1099 contractors. Permanent employees are more likely to undergo a vetting process, including background checks and drug screenings, which can give you more peace of mind knowing who’s up on your roof. Using the same group of in-house team members also means better accountability and helps maintain consistent quality and safety practices, ensuring the team follows the protocols every time. Plus, you’re more likely to get consistent work and a crew that takes pride in its work when they represent the company directly. Of course, not all in-house crews are equally skilled, but reputable roofing companies continue to invest in training their employees. Clear communication is also a benefit in terms of how the crew communicates with the office staff and project manager to keep up with the details of your specific roofing job. Some companies with in-house crews, like one of the best Salt Lake City roofers, Whitaker Roofing, offer continuous training opportunities to enhance skills and safety. This kind of dedicated education helps ensure the crew is up-to-date on the roofing industry’s latest best practices and methods. A downside to using in-house crews is that you may pay more. This is typically due to higher overhead costs than companies that use subcontractors. Another **** is that you may have to wait longer to schedule your roofing job with an in-house roofing crew, as they have less availability. However, if you care about knowing who is doing the work and want to ensure accountability, then a company that uses in-house roofing crews might be right for you. What to know about subcontractors Two roofers installing asphalt shingles on top of a new house against a clear blue sky It’s common practice to use subcontractors in roofing, but it’s important to know what that means for your roofing project. Many roofing companies use subcontractors, especially for large roofs or during busy seasons. This approach allows for more flexibility, leading to faster roofing timelines and possibly lower costs, depending on how the company manages its labor and overhead. For example, some of Atlanta’s top roofing companies depend on subcontractors instead of in-house crews. This setup can work well when there’s consistency and oversight from company management. For instance, Mighty Dog Roofing of Atlanta shares a trusted group of subcontractors with nearby branches. Bumble Roofing of North Atlanta also uses the same three subcontracted crews across its local offices and told Yahoo Local that each crew specializes in different jobs, including large-scale projects like a 50,000-square-foot roof. The biggest risk you take when hiring a roofing company that uses subcontractors is inconsistency in the work. If your roofer does not carefully screen who they hire, you could end up with roofers who aren’t properly insured, aren’t covered under the company’s liability policy or whose work isn’t up to quality standards. Many subcontractors have a lot of experience and are highly skilled, but not all are vetted the same way. It’s not common practice to background-check subcontractors, but relationships matter. Ask your roofer how long they’ve known the subcontractors — some have longstanding relationships and others are new to the game. If you’re considering a company that uses subcontractors, it’s also worth asking how crews are assigned and what kind of experience they bring to the job. A reputable roofing contractor will be upfront with you about their independent labor and answer any questions you have. In-house crews vs. subcontractors: Which is right for you? A roofer nails a timber board using an electric nailer while working on a roof It’s probably not the first question on your mind when you’re thinking about a roof repair or replacement, but knowing who the roofing company is sending out to perform work on your home is important. Deciding between a company that uses in-house roofing crews vs. subcontractors can be tricky, but there are some things to remember when choosing between the two. Typically, in-house crews undergo background checks and are trained to the company’s standards, ensuring you’re getting a good quality roof repair or installation by someone who has been properly vetted. They are directly managed by someone at the roofing company, so you know exactly who to call if something goes wrong. On the other hand, subcontractors can offer more flexibility and potentially take on more jobs than in-house crews, especially during summer, which tends to be the busy season for most roofers in the U.S. Some companies have reliable subcontractors they’ve worked with for years. While these crews may not undergo formal background checks, they often understand the company’s standards and procedures. However, keep in mind that subcontractors may also work for other roofing companies. Four people died when two Sea World helicopters collided above the Gold Coast Broadwater in January 2023 during the busy summer holiday season. A litany of factors led to the ******, including limited visibility, failed radio transmissions and a lack of safety protocols, the *********** Transport Safety Bureau’s final report revealed in April. A pre-inquest hearing in Brisbane on Monday was told the safety bureau report had provided scope for the helicopter ****** inquest to be held at a later date. Pilot Ashley Jenkinson 40, Ronald and Diane Hughes, 65 and 67, and Sydney mother Vanessa Tadros, 36, died in the ****** while nine others were injured in the catastrophic collision more than two years ago. The pilot’s drug use before the ****** would be one of 11 issues to come under the microscope at the inquest, counsel assisting Ian Harvey said on Monday. “The ATSB report includes a finding that it was very likely that pilot Ashley Jenkinson used ******** around one-and-a-half days prior to the accident,” Mr Harvey told the court. “Their conclusion is that the pilot Ashley Jenkinson was unlikely to have been directly affected by the drug at the time of the accident. “The word ‘directly’ is of some significance.” Other issues to be addressed at the inquest would include the high frequency of Sea World helicopter flights as well as the design and control of landing sites, he said. Adequacy of training, radio equipment serviceability and effectiveness along with Sea World’s air communication systems would also be examined, the coroner heard. One of the outstanding issues the safety bureau found was an antenna failure in one helicopter’s radio that existed for days. One of the pilots tried to make a call to alert the other helicopter that they were leaving but it was never delivered to the other aircraft due to the fault, the safety bureau report said. 8. How retail investors won round one of tariff market volatility How retail investors won round one of tariff market volatility Who’s the dumb money now? As $74 billion flowed out of equity mutual funds and ETFs in April, retail investors bought the dip and participated in the fastest snapback in the S&P 500 (^GSPC) since 1982. Retail investor inflows have surpassed $50 billion since April 8, according to a May 15 note from JPMorgan quantitative strategist Emma Wu. Although the pace of purchases slowed from “dip-buying weeks,” Wu noted on Thursday that retail investors still bought $7.5 billion in equities over the past week. “I have to give retail a back-clap because they had been buying the dip all the way through,” RBC Capital Markets derivatives strategist Amy Wu Silverman said on Catalysts (see video above). “It was really the institutional investor base that massively de-grossed [i.e., reduced exposure to financial markets]. So they’re the ones who actually have to catch up right now.” Data from investing platform Public indicates that investors who bought the dip between April 3 and May 9 earned a nearly 12% return. That winning streak led Bank of America’s retail clients to sell stocks and take profits for the first time in 23 weeks prior to Memorial Day, according to a note from BofA senior US equity strategist Jill Carey Hall. Public founder and CEO Leif Abraham said the buy-the-dip strategy has become the norm, noting that “the concept of buying the dip has definitely become sort of retail investing culture.” Read more: How to protect your money during economic turmoil, stock market volatility So what did the so-called smart money get wrong about the volatility and subsequent rally? Part of the reason is baked into the demands of the role, according to Silverman. “The pickle that an institutional investor is in … [is] you’re usually benchmarked to the S&P 500,” she said. “So the S&P 500 goes up 15%, and you went up 5%. That’s not great.” It can be hard to justify fees if you’re not beating the benchmark. Silverman calls this “career risk,” which she said is something that isn’t talked about enough. Retail investors benefit from a longer time horizon that institutional investors can’t enjoy, since they are judged annually. “We miss a lot of returns,” Invesco global market strategist Brian Levitt acknowledged. “Investors are still their own worst enemies.” Trader Fred Demarco works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on April 21, 2025. (AP Photo/Richard Drew) · ASSOCIATED PRESS Levitt added that the lesson for long-term investors to stay the course in market volatility is a tale as old as time and not necessarily a strategy that indicates retail is winning. 11. AI can track 3D printed parts back to specific machine that made them AI can track 3D printed parts back to specific machine that made them Researchers have developed an AI-driven system which can pinpoint “the specific machine” following an inspection of the 3D printed parts it has produced. A Grainger College of Engineering team from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign say that the system could be used for managing supply chains, “detecting early problems and verifying that suppliers are following agreed upon processes.” However, talk of the “hidden fingerprints” of 3D printers have got this Sherlock, Columbo, Monk, and Fargo fan more interested in the criminal investigatory implications of the new AI. (Image credit: Grainger College of Engineering) Implications for manufacturing, quality, and trust Only a photograph of a part printed by a certain 3D printer is needed to verify its “unique signature… or fingerprint” says the Grainger blog. “We are still amazed that this works: we can print the same part design on two identical machines – same model, same process settings, same material – and each machine leaves a unique fingerprint that the AI model can trace back to the machine,” said Bill King, a professor of mechanical science and engineering, and the research project leader. “It’s possible to determine exactly where and how something was made. You don’t have to take your supplier’s word on anything.” You may like The researchers looked most closely at the (major) implications for supplier management and quality control. They described how this was important to 3D printer vendors to ensure users “adhere to a specific set of machines, processes, and factory procedures” to deliver the expected quality levels throughout the printing / production process. In tests, smartphone photographs of 9,192 parts made on 21 3D printing machines from six companies, and with four different fabrication processes, could be fingerprinted “with 98% accuracy from just 1 square millimeter of the part’s surface.” It would be interesting to see how much more accurate the Ai could be, given a larger area to anaylze. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Grainger College of Engineering) (Image credit: Grainger College of Engineering) Beware of using your 3D printer for ‘illicit goods’ Despite what sounds like a rather narrow focus on 3D printers used in factory production environments, the AI can work its magic on a far broader pool of devices. “These manufacturing fingerprints have been hiding in plain sight,” King said. “There are thousands of 3D printers in the world, and tens of millions of 3D printed parts used in airplanes, automobiles, medical devices, consumer products, and a host of other applications. Each one of these parts has a unique signature that can be detected using AI.” We assume King’s assertion includes all the printers listed in the regularly updated Tom’s Hardware’s best 3D printers article. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. Beyond its touted use for supply chain management, the researchers say the tech could be applied to “track the origins of illicit goods.” Other than that, they don’t discuss any implications for criminal investigations. However, we’d like to see the technology used to trace the origin of a 3D printed gun discovered at a crime scene, for example. Eaton Netball Association focus on inclusivity with funding boost Eaton Netball Association focus on inclusivity with funding boost Almost a year on after an $8000 funding boost, the Eaton Netball Association has opened inclusive programs in a bid grown its participant base and open the sport up to new players. The association was the recipient of a Woolworths Netball Grant last year, focusing the funds on boosting participation by reducing fees, while encouraging healthy, active lifestyles. The reduced fees helped players in both their NetSetGo and development programs for the 2025 season to relieve families of the financial burden and encourage new participants The association also introduced a new social competition to encourage participation from both male and female players who might not have played traditional netball due to the costs or time commitments. This competition received new bibs to reduce uniform costs. New equipment also came the way of the NetSetGo program including bibs, bean bags, cones and hula hoops while the development program players enjoyed new fitness equipment, team bags, coaching equipment and a larger gazebo for carnivals. The grants are open again, with netball clubs and associations across Australia having the chance to win a portion of $100,000 in grants to promote healthier eating habits and increased physical activity among young players. There is also a $20,000 people’s choice award allocated to the club or association with the most votes. Former *********** Diamonds player and Woolworths NetSetGo ambassador Catherine Cox said the grants held a special place in her heart as not only a player, but also a parent. “Coaching my young daughter’s local netball team, I’ve seen firsthand how sport brings kids together, builds confidence, and nurtures a true sense of belonging,” she said. “It’s about more than just the game, it’s about giving children the chance to grow, thrive, and fall in love with an active, healthy lifestyle. “By supporting initiatives like this, they are (Woolworths) also helping kids all over the country discover the lifelong benefits of teamwork, movement, and nourishing their bodies with good food.” Clubs and associations can apply online at the Woolworths Netball Grants website before August 29. 14. Harvard Strips Tenure From HBS Superstar Prof Francesca Gino Harvard Strips Tenure From HBS Superstar Prof Francesca Gino Francesca Gino has lost tenure protection at Harvard For what many believe is the first time in its long history, Harvard University has stripped a one-time superstar professor at Harvard Business School of tenure. The decision, announced in a closed-door meeting with business faculty this past week, officially puts to an end Gino’s lifetime employment protections at HBS. Tenure revocation represents the most severe discipline a university can impose. For Gino, the university decision is a potentially career ending decision unless she can provide evidence that the data at issue was not intentionally falsified. Even if she is able to accomplish her innocence in her $25 million lawsuit against Harvard, this is a huge hit to her career and reputation. It has been nearly two years since Harvard’s Office of the President notified Gino on July 28 of 2023 that it had begun the process of reviewing her tenure over allegations of research misconduct. The tenure review was initiated by HBS Dean Srikant Datar who by then had put Gino on an unpaid administrative leave, banned her from campus, revoked her named professorship, and prevented the professor from publishing on Harvard Business School platforms. Gino’s loss of tenure represents the first time Harvard University has forcibly stripped a tenured faculty member’s position since the 1940s, when the American Association of University Professors formalized tenure rules. Tenured faculty have long been considered invincible. More often than not, professors who are under pressure from a university administration voluntarily surrender their tenure or simply retire. ALLEGATIONS OF RESEARCH FRAUD SURFACED FOUR YEARS AGO Francesca Gino An award-winning behavioral scientist at Harvard Business School, Gino was first accused of fabricating data by Data Colada in July of 2021 when authors of the blog approached Harvard Business School with their allegations. According to her lawsuit, Dean Datar negotiated a secret agreement with Data Colada, putting off the publication of their posts until HBS had the opportunity to investigate the claims. After an 18-month-long investigation by a three-person committee of former and current HBS professors, the panel concluded that Gino was responsible for research misconduct. Dean Datar accepted the committee’s verdict and suggested punishment on June 13th of this year. Gino has maintained her innocence throughout, raising questions about the fairness of the process as well as the harshness of the penalties imposed on her. Word of the school’s findings quickly leaked out. A mere three days later, in a June 16th article entitled A Weird Research-Misconduct Scandal About Dishonesty Just Got Weirder, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported that one of Gino’s co-authors claimed that Harvard found that one study contained even more fraudulent data than previously revealed and was now asking the journal to note this new information. It was quickly followed within 24 hours by more detailed reporting by Data Colada with the start of a four-part series examining data in four separate studies co-authored by Gino. “We wrote a report about four studies for which we had accumulated the strongest evidence of fraud,” the blog authors asserted. “We believe that many more Gino-authored papers contain fake data. Perhaps dozens.” HBS Dean Datar sent an email to the school’s faculty on the Chronicle’s article. “Last Friday,” he wrote, “the Chronicle of Higher Education published an article describing concerns that have been raised about the research of a member of our faculty, Francesca Gino, as well as steps the School is taking with journals and co-authors to correct the scientific record. Other outlets are beginning to carry stories as well. While I know you may have questions, confidentiality is an important consideration in these matters. I realize this runs counter to our longstanding norms of transparency and communication but hope that you can appreciate and understand the reasons for this approach.” TENURE REVOCATION CONFIRMED BY A UNIVERSITY SPOKESPERSON Neither the university nor the business school made a public announcement of the move. It was first disclosed by GBH News and confirmed by a university spokesperson. Gino, who has vehemently denied that she did anything wrong, has not commented publicly on the decision. Previously, Gino has asserted that she has never “falsified data or engaged in research misconduct of any kind.” Her last LinkedIn post two weeks ago was a promotion of sorts for her book, Rebel Talent. A website, Francesca v Harvard, devoted to her lawsuit has not been recently updated. Harvard has consistently declined public comment on the case, but after Gino filed her lawsuit, Dean Datar wrote another email to the faculty defending his decision to discipline Gino. ” I ultimately accepted the investigation committee’s recommended sanctions, which included immediately placing Professor Gino on administrative leave and correcting the scientific record (a measure incumbent on every responsible academic institution when research misconduct is found),” Datar wrote. “I did so after consulting confidentially with a small number of individuals at HBS and Harvard, including senior faculty members here at the School, as is permitted by our policy. The sanctions reflect a shared belief that the misconduct represented a significant violation of academic integrity and that the evidence not only met but surpassed the applicable preponderance of evidence standard. I shared my conclusions with Professor Gino and, in accordance with our policy and consistent with University practice, began implementing the institutional actions.” Nonetheless, some faculty believed Datar’s treatment of Gino has been unusually harsh. At one point, seven tenured professors at Harvard Business School, remaining anonymous out of fear of retaliation by Dean Datar, say his handling of the Gino case has rocked their confidence in the school’s leadership. In a letter published in The Harvard Crimson, the professors accuse Dean Datar of violating the school’s norms of policy development by pushing through a new process to deal with professors accused of research misconduct without the knowledge or collaboration with the faculty. In fact, according to the professors, the new policy was in place for two years before ever being mentioned to faculty. 16. Trump to lay wreath at Arlington National Cemetery to mark Memorial Day Trump to lay wreath at Arlington National Cemetery to mark Memorial Day President Trump on Monday will visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and deliver remarks at Arlington Cemetery to commemorate Memorial Day. The president will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a somber annual tradition for presidents, and one Mr. Trump participated in during his first term as president. Early Monday, Mr. Trump posted a message on his social media platform Truth Social about Memorial Day, writing in all caps that he wished a “happy Memorial Day to all,” including the “***** that spent the last four years trying to destroy our country through warped radical left minds.” He went on to target immigration policies and accused “USA-hating judges who suffer from an ideology that is sick, and very dangerous for our country” of protecting criminals. Memorial Day honors those who died in uniform as a result of battle. Since the Revolutionary War, the Department of Veterans Affairs estimates more than 650,000 U.S. military personnel have died in battle. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, completed in 1932, to represent the burial site of a soldier from World War I whose remains could not be identified. Unknown remains from later wars were added in 1958 and 1984. Earlier this month, the president proclaimed on Truth Social that the U.S. will designate new holidays to commemorate the end of World War I and World War II in Europe. “All over the World, the Allies are celebrating the Victory we had in World War II. The only Country that doesn’t celebrate is the United States of America, and the Victory was only accomplished because of us,” Mr. Trump said in that post. “I am hereby declaring a National Holiday in celebration of the Victories of World War I, where the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, and World War II, where the Victory date was May 8, 1945,” he wrote. Nov. 11 is already a federal holiday, known as Veterans Day. May, 8, 1945, is generally known as Victory in Europe Day, or V-E Day, since the war in the Pacific lasted until the Japanese surrended, which was announced on August 14, 1945. 19. Credit Downgrade and Tariffs Push Investors Abroad—These ETFs Offer Shelter Credit Downgrade and Tariffs Push Investors Abroad—These ETFs Offer Shelter Investors have ample reason to be concerned about the future of U.S. investment vehicles—mid-May’s news of Moody’s downgrade of the nation’s credit rating and the resultant market shake-up and the lingering threat of dramatic tariff increases chief among them. Unsurprisingly, then, many investors may be likely to increase their exposure to international markets to avoid this turbulence. For investors most accustomed to targeting U.S. securities, picking international stocks can be difficult. Fortunately, many exchange-traded funds (ETFs) make it possible to gain easy access to markets worldwide. The funds below target baskets of stocks from areas already experiencing growth or with strong potential to do so in the future. Poland’s Burgeoning Industry May Help to Fuel ETF Gains Fresh off encouraging signs in April’s industry and labor markets, Poland appears poised to break away from stagnation elsewhere in Central Europe. Its industrial production improved in April, increasing by 1.2% year-over-year (YOY) while analysts predicted a modest decline. The iShares MSCI Poland ETF (NYSE:) is an ETF that may be able to capitalize on this potential. EPOL is a rare fund focused exclusively on Polish equities. Keep in mind, though, that the fund is skewed toward financial names, with about 46% of the portfolio dedicated to this sector. The ETF is also concentrated, with just 33 holdings and the largest position representing more than 15% of invested assets. Still, the strategy has paid off nicely in 2025, as the fund has returned more than 44% year-to-date (YTD). With an expense ratio of 0.60%, EPOL is priced in line with many other international funds; investors should expect to spend a bit more on these specialized ETFs compared with many U.S.-focused alternatives. Narrow Focus on Austrian Stocks, With an Emphasis on Banks The iShares MSCI Austria ETF (NYSE:) capitalizes on companies listed in Austria’s national stock exchange. Based on the MSCI Austria IMI (LON:) 25/50 Index, the exposure to individual names is theoretically capped. Given EWO’s narrow portfolio of only around 20 positions, a small number of stocks still represent a large portion of assets invested. Like EPOL, nearly half of EWO’s portfolio is dedicated to financials. Fortunately, the most prominent positions in EWO’s basket, the major banks Erste Group and BAWAG (VIE:), together accounting for more than a third of the portfolio, have thrived this year, helping to catapult EWO’s returns skyward. However, for investors seeking a more diversified approach, a broader European ETF may be the better option. EWO has achieved YTD returns of nearly 36% and has an expense ratio of 0.50%. Greek Economic Recovery Can Continue to Drive Big Returns Greece’s economy has made an impressive recovery following a crisis in the late 2000s. Investors anticipating this trend to continue might consider the Global X MSCI Greece ETF (NYSE:). GREK is currently the only ETF available in the United States that exclusively focuses on Greek stocks. Still, like the funds above, it is narrowly focused on a basket of just 31 names, with the three most extensive holdings collectively representing close to 40% of assets. Similar to the funds above, financial names are better represented in GREK’s portfolio than stocks from other sectors. A full 51% of the portfolio is dedicated to banks and related stocks. Again, though, this has paid off with impressive returns of almost 40% so far this year. GREK’s expense ratio of 0.57% is also reasonable, particularly given that this fund is alone in its targeting of Greek stocks. Small-Cap Focus on the Brazilian Equities Market The iShares MSCI Brazil Small-Cap ETF (NASDAQ:) has a somewhat different focus from the funds above in that it targets the small-cap segment of the Brazilian equities space. This may be a play for investors looking for exposure to Brazilian stocks in the consumer discretionary and financials sectors, as together these two groups account for more than a third of the portfolio. EWZS is also more diversified than the funds above, with over 70 positions and the largest holdings occupying under 6% of the portfolio. Together, this basket of stocks has achieved YTD returns of almost 34% for an expense ratio of 0.60%. 20. A 17-year-old designed a cheaper, more efficient drone. The Department of Defense just awarded him $23,000 for it. A 17-year-old designed a cheaper, more efficient drone. The Department of Defense just awarded him $23,000 for it. Cooper Taylor, 17, aims to revolutionize the drone industry with a new design. Taylor designed a motor-tilting mechanism to lower manufacturing cost and increase efficiency. His innovation won awards at science competitions adding up to $23,000. Cooper Taylor is only 17 years old, but he’s already trying to revolutionize the drone industry. Taylor has spent the last year optimizing a type of drone that’s being used more and more in agriculture, disaster relief, wildlife conservation, search-and-rescue efforts, and medical deliveries. His design makes the drone more efficient, customizable, and less expensive to construct, he says. He’s built six prototypes where he 3D-printed every piece of hardware, programmed the software, and even soldered the control circuit board. He says building his drone cost one-fifth the price of buying a comparable machine, which sells for several thousand dollars. Taylor told Business Insider that he hopes “if you’re a first responder or a researcher or an everyday problem solver, you can have access to this type of drone.” His innovation won him an $8,000 scholarship in April at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, funded by the Department of Defense. Then, on May 16, he received an even ******* scholarship of $15,000 from the US Navy, which he won after presenting his research at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. Taylor soldered all his own circuitry.Normin Taylor “Ultimately having people in STEM careers is a matter of national security,” Winnie Boyle, the senior director of competitions at the National Science Teaching Association, which administers JSHS, told ***. Even though most students who compete won’t end up working in the military, she added, “we as the community will still benefit from the research that they’re doing.” A drone that blends plane and helicopter It all started when Taylor’s little sister got a drone, and he was disappointed to see that it could only fly for about 30 minutes before running out of power. He did some research and found that a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone would last longer. This type of drone combines the multi-rotor helicopter style with the fixed wings of an airplane, making it extremely versatile. It lifts off as a helicopter, then transitions into plane mode. That way it can fly further than rotors alone could take it, which was the drawback to Taylor’s sister’s drone. Unlike a plane-style drone, though, it doesn’t need a runway and it can hover with its helicopter rotors. The problem is that VTOL drones are very expensive. As Taylor learned more about them, though, he realized he could improve a key inefficiency and maybe drastically reduce their cost. Taylor has flown six prototypes of his drone.Normin Taylor VTOL drones use helicopter-style rotors to lift off straight from the ground, but once airborne, the motors running those rotors turn off and the drone switches to a plane-style motor to travel horizontally. Motors are some of the most expensive parts of a drone, Taylor said, so having some motors sit idle during flight is “a big waste of cost and a big waste of energy.” He wanted to solve this problem by designing a motor that could start out helicopter-style for liftoff, then tilt back to become an airplane-style motor. That’s not a new concept. Aerospace companies have tinkered with tilting rotors for decades, according to David Handelman, a senior roboticist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. However, Taylor designed his rotor-tilting drone to be completely 3D-printed and completely modular. A user can pop the tail and wings out of their sockets and replace them with any custom appendages. Similarly, a port for cameras or scientific instruments leaves room for customization. The cost savings come from the fact that his drone uses fewer motors, but the modular nature means users could upgrade or replace parts of the drone for a lower cost than buying a whole new drone. Handelman, who mentored the high schooler, told *** in an email that Taylor’s drone “could appeal to users who need a versatile platform but can’t afford large or complex systems.” If you ****** at first, try, try again Taylor spent an entire summer solving this VTOL problem. “It was a wonderful summer, really focused,” Taylor said. “I’d wake up, I’d go into my basement, I’d work on the drone, I’d look outside, and it’s 12 a.m.” Taylor spent long days in the basement working on his drone.Normin Taylor When he hit a barrier in his knowledge of coding, design, or circuitry, he would look for advice in online forums or take a relevant course on the website Udemy. His first three prototypes crashed. One of them soared 50 feet up and then face planted. “That sort of hurt. That’s a few hundred hours right there,” Taylor said. Each flight and ****** revealed a problem he needed to fix until, finally, the fourth drone flew and touched down in one piece. “I actually love doing this,” Taylor said. “It’s so much fun for me.” Taylor’s latest prototype weighs about 6 pounds with a wingspan a little over 4 feet. He’s flown it for up to 15 minutes at a time, but he has calculated that at the rate it uses power it should last for 105 minutes cruising at 45 mph. He doesn’t want to push those limits just yet though. “Cooper brought both curiosity and discipline to the project, working at a level I usually see in strong college students,” Handelman said. “The fact that he got the aircraft flying is a testament to his persistence, creativity, and problem-solving ability.” Now Taylor is building his seventh iteration of the drone. Eventually, he wants to make it small enough to remove the wings and fit it in a backpack. This summer, though, the high schooler says he’ll be working on a different drone project through a program with the Reliable Autonomous Systems Lab at MIT. 23. From jail to history: Cabrera wins two majors in a week From jail to history: Cabrera wins two majors in a week Months after resuming his career following a prison stint for domestic violence, Angel Cabrera has achieved the rare feat of winning two major golf championships within six days. A play-off runner-up to Adam Scott at the ***********’s iconic 2013 Masters triumph, Cabrera backed up his Regions Tradition victory last week with a one-shot win at the Senior PGA Championship in Maryland. Cabrera’s final-round three-under-par 69 pushed him to eight-under 280 and earned the Argentine a one-shot victory over Irishman Padraig Harrington and Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn. Cabrera resumed his career this year after spending time in jail between 2021 and 2023 on assault charges, including threatening two of his former girlfriends. The 55-year-old showed he’d lost little of his class and desire while behind bars when he won the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational in April. Now, incredibly, the 2007 US Open and 2009 Masters champion is a dual major winner at both professionals and seniors level. “I’m extremely happy after winning two tournaments in a row, and also three tournaments within a year,” Cabrera told NBC through a translator. “I’m extremely happy, especially after everything that happened.” Cabrera shared the 54-hole lead with South African triple major winner Retief Goosen, England’s Phillip Archer and American Jason Caron. He was one over through five holes on Sunday, but the turning point came with an eagle at the par-5 sixth. Adding birdies at eight, 11 and 15 gradually pushed the South American ahead. His main competition on Sunday was not any of his third-round co-leaders, who fell off the pace, but rather Harrington, who got off to a blazing start with seven birdies through 14 holes to reach 10 under for the championship. But a double bogey at the par-4 15th knocked the Irishman off that perch and opened the door for Cabrera. Harrington and Bjorn both shot 68, and their seven-under 281 were the clubhouse lead when Cabrera came down No.18. A closing bogey did not keep Cabrera from victory. “I didn’t know that it was going to happen this quickly, winning two tournaments in a row, especially with all these great players around this tour,” Cabrera said. “I feel very emotional and proud.” Caron and Goosen both shot a final-round 71 and tied Stewart Cink (70) for fourth at six under. *********** Cameron Percy rallied after a poor third round while well in contention to finish outright seventh, just three shots behind Cabrera, after shooting a final-round 69. 25. Renowned Everest guide says using xenon speeds climb and makes it safer, better for environment Renowned Everest guide says using xenon speeds climb and makes it safer, better for environment KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Using xenon gas treatment and the latest technology is making climbing Mount Everest not just faster but also better for the environment, cutting down garbage and waste, a renowned mountain guide said Monday. Lukas Furtenbach took a team of British climbers, who left London on May 16, to scale the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) peak on May 21. They returned home two days later, in one of the fastest ascents on record of the world’s highest peak, including the climbers’ travel from their homes and back. The use of xenon gas treatment has, however, drawn controversy and has even raised the concerns of Nepalese mountaineering authorities who have announced an investigation. “The only reason why we are working with xenon is to make climbing safer, to protect climbers from high altitude sickness,” Furtenbach told The Associated Press upon his return to Kathmandu. “We can see people dying on Everest every year and this is may be one step to improve the situation to make climbing high altitude mountains safer.” The climbers had put in months of preparation, training in hypoxia tents, and underwent a xenon gas treatment at a clinic in Germany just two weeks before heading to Nepal. Climbers normally spend weeks at base camp to acclimatize to the higher altitude. They make practice runs to the lower camps on Everest before beginning their final attempt on the peak so that their bodies are prepared for the low pressure and lower level of oxygen available. The new method is likely to reduce the time climbers spend out of their home countries and cut the number of days they need to take off work, also cutting down on expenses. Furtenbach said the ability to climb the peak in a short ******* of time could also lead to less environmental impact on the mountain. “Human waste is one of the biggest problems on Everest base camp. If people spend one week there compared to eight weeks, it is a 75 precent reduction of human waste,” he said. “It is a huge reduction of garbage on the mountain and also of resources that have to be carried up to the back camp and have to be carried up the mountain.” Nepal doesn’t have rules on how many days climbers must spend acclimatizing or making practice climbs. The permits to climb Everest, which cost $11,000 each, are valid for 90 days. Climbing season normally wraps up by the end of May, when the weather deteriorates and monsoon season begins. The ropes and ladders fixed to the mountain are then pulled out. Nepal’s mountaineering department issued a press statement saying it was going to investigate the use of xenon gas. Furtenbach said the gas was never used in Nepal and that he could prove that it was safe to use for climbers.
