Sao Paulo moves to end area known as Crackland as residents scatter and cry foul against police
Sao Paulo moves to end area known as Crackland as residents scatter and cry foul against police
SAO PAULO (AP) — Marcelo Colaiácovo was driving to his bar in Downtown Sao Paulo on a recent May afternoon when he noticed something unusual: the hundreds of drug users that for years roamed around the neighborhood were all gone. He walked around for 10 minutes finding no trace of them. Also gone was the stench of their waste being cleaned by city hall staffers.
“I felt this strange peace,” said the 42-year-old Sao Paulo resident. “Everyone had disappeared. But how come?”
Colaiácovo’s bar-museum is located in one of the edges of Cracolandia, or Crackland, a sprawling downtown Sao Paulo area that for decades has been home to thousands of drug users, often lying on the ground or jaywalking with pipes between their lips.
But by May 12 the scene had changed.
Only police officers were seen where crack users dominated for decades. Shop owners and residents who worried about muggings were chatting outside. Pavement that until recently featured scattered shoes, single socks, broken pipes and, sometimes, ****** seemed spotless. The makeshift shelters, made of cardboard and fabric, were gone, and some of the graffiti on deteriorated buildings of Crackland, once a backdrop to the human drama, can finally be seen.
The transformation that stationed police officers in the area and scared residents into other parts of the city is the result of an aggressive local government initiative to change the region for good.
Experts caution, however, that the cleanup carried significant costs: police brutality, the spread of security risks to other areas and the neglect of treatment and protection to drug users, who are not criminals. Instead, they say, Crackland residents have only scattered and will inevitably return.
‘We can’t even carry a blanket’
Residents told The Associated Press that police aggression has escalated since earlier this year under Gov. Tarcisio de Freitas and Mayor Ricardo Nunes. They say officers more frequently are using batons, preventing them from carrying bags where drugs could be hidden, closing several local pensions and even threatening to kill them. About a fourth of neighboring slum, where drug traffickers are reportedly based, has been removed.
Nearly two weeks after drug users vanished from the main Crackland area, hundreds have been spotted in smaller pockets around Sao Paulo’s old city center. Social media videos show some attempting to return at night to their former drug use spot, now a 24/7 police-protected area. But all attempts have failed.
Many hope to soon return to the area they occupied for decades — provided police brutality wanes and authorities lose their grip of the region, as has happened in the past.
“My guitar is in the mud because of a criminal wearing blue,” said Rogério, a tearful man in a dirty shirt and yoga pants, who didn’t provide his surname due to fear of retribution. “I have nothing against the law. But the law has to understand we live there. Now we have to roam, it’s horrible. We can’t enter where we lived, we can’t even carry a blanket.”
‘It’s about people’
Crackland is located in what was once part of Sao Paulo’s old city center. The decline of the region began in the 1960s, as business moved to Paulista Avenue, a more central artery, and industries relocated to the cheaper outskirts. For about two decades, until the mid 1980s, low budget film companies moved in, earning the region the nickname of “Garbage Mouth.” Drug users first arrived about three decades ago.
Brazilian researchers say Crackland emerged in the 1990s due to a confluence of two factors: the proximity of a major transportation hub, encompassing buses, subways and trains, and widespread mass killings in the city’s most impoverished districts, which forced residents to congregate in the downtown’s most dilapidated sector.
For much of the last 30 years, shop owners and residents feared being mugged. Today, the area the size of 10 soccer fields in Sao Paulo’s old city center, is spotless and silent.
Lieutenant Sao Paulo Gov. Felicio Ramuth, who was picked by Gov. de Freitas to clean up Crackland, said last week that there was no police brutality linked to the scattering of residents.
“We had 50 police raids at the scene (and) 1,000 criminals were jailed,” he told daily O Estado de S.Paulo on Wednesday. “We did not receive any accusation of police brutality.”
Ramuth said that 1,200 drug users who were in the area until a few weeks ago are now under treatment in clinics, but offered no evidence to support his claim. He added that he will deem Crackland free of drug users if its current condition remains for the next six months.
Gov. De Freitas, a former minister under President Jair Bolsonaro, is reportedly considering running against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2026 presidential election. His rivals claim he stands to gain political capital by ending Crackland, which could also make way for a 5-billion Brazilian reais ($900 million) project to relocate about 60 state government buildings to the area.
Critics of the government’s strategy to end Crackland are crying foul. Catholic priest Júlio Lancelotti, who has worked with homeless people for most of his 76 years, said police brutality and the scattering of drug users will not solve the problem.
“It is not right to make political propaganda to say Crackland disappeared,” Lancelotti said. “Crackland is not a physical area, it’s about people. They are being taken to isolated regions, they are not going to clinics.”
The city hall of Guarulhos, a city within the Sao Paulo metropolitan area, expressed concern in a recent statement about the accusations by Lancelotti and other activists who claim that the residents of Crackland “had been brought and abandoned” there. It added it will investigate the case.
Sao Paulo Mayor Nunes denied any wrongdoing.
‘The problem will grow’
Giordano Magri, a University of Sao Paulo researcher specializing in urban issues, said the current crackdown on Crackland aims to remove the infrastructure for drug users to survive in the area, but they will eventually find similar conditions elsewhere.
“Since the governor and the mayor became more authoritarian, that ecosystem is gone. But they can’t do this forever,” said Magri, who added that people leaving Crackland will have more than 70 smaller spots across the city to relocate to.
Rogério, the man whose guitar was broken, fears the situation could get worse in the coming days as hundreds seek to return.
“We are real people. I say that with a sour heart. I am garbage, I know,” he said. “But now that they are scattering the garbage, the problem will grow.”

Ministers considering scrapping two-child benefit cap
Ministers considering scrapping two-child benefit cap
Kate Whannel
Political reporter
PA Media
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has said the government is looking at scrapping the two-child benefit cap but warned it would “cost a lot of money”.
Speaking to the BBC, the minister said the policy – which prevents most families from claiming means-tested benefits for any third or additional children born after April 2017 – had pushed people into poverty.
However, she said “seeking to unwind that and to change the social security system is not easy”, adding that the price tag would be big.
The government is expected to announce its decision on the cap in autumn, when it publishes its child poverty strategy.
Phillipson, along with Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall, is leading the Child Poverty Taskforce putting together the strategy. It had been due to be published in spring but has now been delayed until the autumn.
The taskforce was launched last year, at a time when the government was being urged by the SNP and some Labour MPs to scrap the cap.
Pressure from Labour backbenchers over the issue – as well as cuts to ******** – have intensified since the Labour’s poor performance at the local elections earlier this year.
In its manifesto at the 2024 election, Labour said it would get rid of the cap “when fiscal conditions allow”.
Phillipson told the BBC the taskforce was looking at the cap and “nothing is off the table”.
She said a Labour government would never have introduced the cap, adding: “Labour governments make different choices, we have different priorities, and you will see that coming through later this year.”
Although she emphasised the cost of removing the cap would be high, she added that the “cost of inaction” is also incredibly high because this scars the life chances of children in this country”.
In a speech on Monday, Reform *** leader Nigel Farage is expected to promise to abolish the cap if his party gets into government.
The Liberal Democrats and the Green Party both committed to getting rid of the cap in their election manifestos.
Conservative shadow chancellor Mel Stride defended the policy, which was introduced by his party in 2017.
“A lot of people up and down the country go through those hard choices and often sacrifices, in order to have a large family,” he told the BBC.
“I don’t think it’s unreasonable under those circumstances to have a cap at the two-child level for those who would otherwise be relying on benefits for further children.”
Around 1.6 million children live in a household affected by the cap, according to statistics from the Department of Work and Pensions.
Analysis published last year by the Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank found that the average affected households lose around £4,300 per year.
It also estimated that removing the cap would cost the government £3.4bn a year.

Man jailed after recruiting others to help kidnap his brother-in-law because he disapproved of sister’s marriage
Man jailed after recruiting others to help kidnap his brother-in-law because he disapproved of sister’s marriage
A man who orchestrated a criminal enterprise to kidnap his brother-in-law because he and his family didn’t approve of the groom has been sentenced to four years in prison, with three co-accused avoiding jail.
Kodar Faytrouni drove at least nine hours from Melbourne to Sydney with three other men to kidnap his sister’s husband, Younis Younis, in January 2023.
He pleaded guilty to charges of take/detain person in company with intent obtain advantage and common assault along with one of the co-accused, Abud Elkerdi, with the pair appearing before Judge Stephen Hanley in the Downing Centre District Court on Tuesday afternoon.
The court was told Faytrouni was the “architect” of the kidnapping.
His sister, Hanadi, had visited him in Melbourne in January 2023 to tell him she married Mr Younis.
While Faytrouni initially told his sister he was happy for her, he embarked on the lengthy journey to Sydney with the co-accused to kidnap her husband that same month.

The court was told Mr Younis was assaulted, grabbed, and was “manhandled” outside his home before he was taken to a car.
Mr Younis was hit repeatedly while in the back seat of the car, with photographs taken depicting Mr Younis being held in a headlock as he was driven to Faytrouni’s fathers’ home.
There, he was directed to divorce his wife over the phone, with Judge Hanley telling the court Hanadi could hear Mr Faytrouni screaming at her husband to tell her they were divorced.
She started to cry, and the call ended.
Mr Younis’ shirt was ripped during the ordeal, and he was given a different shirt and slippers to wear before he was again taken into a car.
Police managed to stop the vehicle — they’d been alerted to an incident after Mr Younis’ neighbour saw him being taken away from his home.
Judge Hanley said Mr Younis “would’ve been extremely frightened” until police intervened.
He said Faytrouni refused to accept his sister was able to freely make choices about who she was in a relationship with, with the beliefs “contrary to our society”.
“I am satisfied that irrespective of whether he was upset or directed by his parents … that in the fact that he employed several other people, being the co-accused, to go with him, he was not going to have a quiet talk with the victim,” Judge Hanley told the court.
Judge Hanley said Faytrouni appeared to show “little concern for the impact on the victim”, though his wife said he was remorseful.
Though he appeared to initially support his sister’s marriage, Judge Hanley said he was allegedly “quickly persuaded otherwise” by his parents.

Mental health support
Faytourni’s wife said he was willing to change and the incident has been a “massive wake up call”.
“I’m satisfied despite his lack of empathy to the victim that he has reasonable prospects for rehabilitation,” Judge Hanley told the court during sentencing.
He took into account Faytrouni’s mild intellectual disability and mental health conditions, as well as the need to dissuade others with “like-minded views”
“(I am) satisfied that he was the principal offender and architect of the offending behaviour,” Judge Hanley said.
“Kodar was the architect of the criminal enterprise.”
Faytrouni was sentenced to four years imprisonment to commence on April 8 this year. He will be eligible for parole in 2027.
He has already spent about 49 days in custody, while Elkerdi has spent about 27 days in custody.
His family broke down in court as he was escorted out of court by officers, with one family member sobbing.
The court was told Faytrouni had a difficult life and had mental health conditions and a mild intellectual disability.
His co-accused, Elkerdi, was sentenced to two years and two months to be served by way of intensive correction in the community, commencing on 27 May 2025.
The court was told he’d expressed regret and remorse to a psychologist, and that he had a moderate intellectual disability and mental health conditions.
A doctor opined his intellectual disability could make him “susceptible to the influence of others”.
The two other co-accused are serving intensive correction orders in the community over the incident, while Faytrouni’s father, Imad, is set to front a trial on September 1 over a charge of take/detain person in company with intent obtain advantage.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

6 risk factors for cervical ******* as Emmerdale’s Sarah deals with diagnosis
6 risk factors for cervical ******* as Emmerdale’s Sarah deals with diagnosis
Cervical ******* often strikes quietly, with no warning signs – a reality that ITV soap Emmerdale brings to light in a powerful new storyline, highlighting the importance of early detection.
In her journey to become a mother, Sarah Sugden (played by Katie Hill) undergoes routine tests at a local fertility clinic, which uncover an inflamed cervix. The young mechanic, who suffers from fanconi anaemia – a rare inherited condition that can increase the risk of certain cancers – has already battled leukaemia and throat *******, and fears the worst.
Too scared to tell her family what is happening, 19-year-old Sarah goes for a biopsy on her own. In Tuesday night’s episode, her fears are confirmed, as she is diagnosed with early stage cervical *******.
Cervical ******* is a ******* found anywhere in the cervix, part of the female reproductive system that connects the womb to the *******. It occurs when abnormal cells in the lining grow in an uncontrolled way, and is most common in women aged 30-35. While it’s rare for people under 25, like Sarah, to develop the disease, it can occur at any age.
The new storyline aims to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and regular medical check-ups.
Sarah’s ex boyfriend Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) comforts her shortly after she receives her diagnosis. (ITV)
How common is cervical *******?
Research from ******* Research *** shows that around 3,300 new cases of cervical ******* are diagnosed in the *** each year – approximately 1 in 142 females will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime.
Despite these numbers, awareness remains low, and uptake of cervical screening is worryingly below target. When former Big Brother star ***** Goody died from cervical ******* in 2009 at the age of 27, there was a surge in the number of women attending cervical screenings.
But from 2023 to 2024, only 68.8% of eligible individuals aged 25 to 64 attended their free NHS cervical screening, leaving many at risk of late diagnosis.
What are the symptoms of cervical *******?
Cervical ******* can be difficult to detect early because many people don’t experience any symptoms in its initial stages. That’s why attending regular cervical screening appointments is so important – it can help catch potentially cancerous changes before symptoms appear or the disease develops.
If you do have symptoms of cervical *******, these may include:
Unusual ******** bleeding – such as bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause
Pain or discomfort during sex – while various conditions can also cause this symptom, visit your doctor as soon as possible
Persistent ******** discharge – that may be watery, have a strong odour or be tinged with blood
Pelvic pain – discomfort in the lower abdomen or between the hip bones
While those with conditions like fibroids or endometriosis may get symptoms like these regularly, it is important to still have check-ups. “You might find you get used to them. But it’s important to be checked by a GP if your symptoms change, get worse, or do not feel normal for you,” the NHS states.

What are the risk factors for cervical *******?
According to the NHS, almost all cases of cervical ******* are caused by an infection with certain high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that most ********* active people will contract at some point in their lives.
HPV can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact involving the ******** area; ********, ***** or ********* and by sharing sex toys. While most HPV infections clear on their own, persistent infection with high-risk strains can lead to abnormal cell changes in the cervix, which may develop into ******* over time.
Regular screening, and HPV vaccination – which is offered to all children in year 8 at school and free on the NHS for women under the age of 25 – are key to prevention.
Other risk factors include:
Having human immunodeficiency virus (****) or AIDS
Having other ********* transmitted infections (STI) alongside HPV
The contraceptive pill is associated with a slightly higher risk
The risk of squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cervical *******, is higher if your mother, sister or daughter has had cervical *******
Who can have a cervical screening?
Cervical screening – a test to check the health of your cervix and help prevent cervical ******* – is routinely offered to anyone with a cervix aged 25 to 64 on the NHS. This includes women, trans men and non-binary people assigned female at birth who still have a cervix.
You must be registered with a GP to receive automatic screening invitations. You’ll receive invitations every three to five years, depending on your age and where you live.
You may receive your first screening invitation up to six months before your 25th birthday. If you do, you can book your appointment right away, you don’t need to wait until you officially turn 25.
What should I do if I’m under 25?
Those under 25 aren’t routinely offered cervical screening on the NHS. This is because of the low rate of those affected and because it can lead to unnecessary treatment.
******* Research *** data shows that while some cases of cervical ******* are diagnosed in people who are under 25, the rates are very low, especially in the 15-19 age group, and the peak happens from above the age of 25.
According to the Suffolk GP Federation, cervical screenings also haven’t been shown to reduce the number of cervical cancers in this age group.
It states: “In countries where cervical screening starts at 20 years old, the number of people under 25 diagnosed with cervical ******* is not significantly different than in countries that start screening at 25 years old.”
The NHS also says that HPV, which is common in people under 25, may cause abnormal cell changes, which often go back to normal in young people but could affect screening results. It adds: “Screening people under 25 can lead to over-treatment and could lead to an increased risk of early (premature) birth if they were to get pregnant in the future.”
If you are aged under 25, it’s still important to pay attention to your body. If you experience symptoms, or are worried, you should speak to a GP or nurse as soon as possible. Medical professionals can assess your symptoms and recommend further testing if needed.
The NHS has specific guidelines in place to help doctors and nurses support young women and people with a cervix aged 20 to 24, especially when they present with abnormal ******** bleeding.
Almost all cases of cervical ******* are caused by an infection with certain high-risk types of HPV. (ITV)
Is cervical ******* curable?
The stage of cervical ******* describes the size of the tumour and whether it has spread to other parts of the body. It plays a crucial role in determining your treatment options and prognosis. Generally, the earlier the stage at diagnosis, the better the chances of successful treatment.
******* Research *** has shared survival statistics for each stage of cervical ******* in England, covering diagnoses between 2013 and 2017.
Approximately 95% survive for five years or more after being diagnosed with Stage 1 cervical *******. In Stage 1, the ******* is usually small and has not spread beyond the cervix.
At Stage 2, almost 70% survive for five years or more. At this stage, the ******* may have begun to spread outside the cervix but hasn’t reached the pelvic wall or lower *******.
Over 40% survive for five years or more after being diagnosed with Stage 3. Cervical ******* at this stage has typically spread deeper into the pelvic area or to nearby lymph nodes in the abdomen or pelvis.
Approximately 15% of those who have been diagnosed with Stage 4 cervical ******* survive for five years or more. This is the most advanced stage, where ******* has spread to distant organs such as the bladder, *******, or lungs.
These figures highlight the importance of early diagnosis. Regular cervical screening helps detect changes before ******* develops or while it’s still at a very early stage, significantly improving the chances of effective treatment.
Resources for those with cervical *******
Finding out you have cervical ******* can be scary, but thankfully, there are a variety of resources and charities available to help you feel less alone.
Macmillan ******* Support
Macmillan ******* Support is a charity that gives practical and medical support to people with ******* in the ***. It offers a helpline, publishes booklets about ******* and treatments and has an online cervical ******* forum for anyone with the disease as well as their family members and loved ones.
******* Research ***
A leading ******* charity offering a wide range of resources and support for anyone impacted by *******. ******* Research *** provides detailed statistics on cervical *******, offers easy-to-understand information about symptoms, treatment, and prevention, and hosts fundraising events like charity runs to support ******* research.
Marie Curie
Marie Curie offers care and support for people living with a terminal illness, including advanced cervical *******, as well as their loved ones. The charity provides nursing care, emotional support, and practical guidance.
The Eve Appeal

Preparation and appreciation – the human factor in incident response
Preparation and appreciation – the human factor in incident response
An incident response plan typically involves some well-known steps. These generally require understanding what has happened, containing the incident and ensuring that communication plans are sound.
According to most best practice guides, there is a strong focus on the final point of “post-incident activity, analysis and improvement plans”.
The number of incidents continues to increase, however, with Check Point reporting that the average number of cyber attacks per organisation has reached 1,925 per week. While not every incident can be investigated, there is a need to respond faster and faster, and if the attack is affecting services, the victim needs to get back online – and ahead of the news cycle – as quickly as possible.
The human factor
Is there something missing here, though? As the focus is on the processes and technology, is the human factor being missed? What about the people who are involved and under pressure to get services back online, and work against the clock – are they taken into consideration?
It may be the case that this is what those who work in incident response are trained to do – their skills are in detection, remediation and/or containment, and they are simply doing their job – but a mental strain can exist in all pressured scenarios. However, a new framework, shared exclusively with Computer Weekly, has been introduced to better enable teamwork in cyber security incident response scenarios by drawing on four primary areas:
Collaboration: The effectiveness of team interactions.
Resilience: The ability to navigate disruptive events.
Evaluation: Competence in decision-making.
Workflow: The efficacy of team and task coordination.
Produced by RangeForce and MindScience, the Crew framework is described as “an attempt to redress this balance by bringing structure, clarity and measurement to the soft skills used in incident response”.
The idea is to highlight the four core competencies listed above, along with 12 contributing behaviours it deems to be necessary in a high-performing defensive cyber team.
The Crew framework identifies the competencies and behaviours required of an incident response team
Rebecca McKeown, founder of MindScience, says there is plenty of focus on technical skills in live instances and tabletop exercises, “but nobody ever really bothers talking about the soft skills side of it”.
She says most teams intuitively know that soft skills and teamwork should be part of the exercise, but they haven’t taken that thought any further. “Who actually knows what skills your teams have? Where is your strength? Where are your weaknesses? How do you measure it? How do you make decisions based on all of that?”
Anthony D’Alton, senior director of product marketing at RangeForce, says Crew intends to enable a security operations centre manager to evaluate who on a team can do what, and who needs to and who should be brought into play in certain parts. “I think there is a massive need for it. It’s not because of fear, uncertainty and doubt, I just don’t think anyone’s really put a finger on it before,” he says.
Standard of skills
D’Alton says the concept of Crew is to help teams understand what standard of soft skills they have, and then help them figure out what they need to do to improve. He explains that the likes of Mitre and Sans provide frameworks for technical skills, whilst Crew is doing the same for soft skills.
McKeown says if you’re able to use the Crew framework to measure your team’s efficiency, you’ll try it once, find it a bit odd, then try it again and the actions will start to become automatic. “So you’ve got that increase in the efficiency and effectiveness of the way you work as a team,” she says.
“The other difficulty with soft skills is that you’ve got to start using them to be able to progress. You can’t just go in, take a test, and then [expect to] be instantly better, because it’s a knowledge thing,” she says.
“It’s about how it works in practice. Even just highlighting the fact that you’ve got a team that’s really, really good at passing around details, they’ve got lots of situation awareness, but they might all actually think, ‘We don’t like making decisions without full information. We’re not very adaptable. We can’t be very creative and think about what to do with this information.’ Then that funnels down on where your skills gap is, and you can go away and remediate.”
The glue of the team
Also, an incident response scenario – be it a live instance or a rehearsal – is something you do as a team, and RangeForce says Crew is intended to be the “glue that holds all of the individual skills together”. The incident response effort is as a team, and you need to exercise as a team, not focus on the individual and the individual’s technical skills.
McKeown says that when a team is working well, everything just runs smoothly, but when it’s not working well, “things are just a nightmare for everybody”.
She believes that creating a “muscle memory” from rehearsal and knowing where the best soft skills lay when a real problem hits “takes away an awful lot of the friction, things that cause you stress and the things that make you have a less effective response because you already know who thinks what, what their way of thinking is, and who makes decisions quickly”.
Benchmarking against Crew will help determine who needs more information and who’s good at conflict resolution. “It’s all of those things that we know happen, but we don’t necessarily take much notice of,” she says.
Adapting to different problems
The consideration of these soft skills also needs to appreciate the stress that the incident response team may be working under. For example, do you immediately close down and isolate the incident, and do you make external announcements on a rolling basis, or as a final announcement once the incident is over?
McKeown says: “It’s about being able to adapt to be able to deal with all of those different problems, and all of those different people, and communicate it in a way that they understand.”
In D’Alton’s experience, CISOs always say that communication is the most important thing in incident response – specifically communicating how tasks are allocated. He says that all too often, “people just disappear off quietly into silos and try to solve problems” and that fragmented strategy goes nowhere near solving the incident as it’s occurring.
Why now?
So, why are soft skills being considered now? Yes, this is a pressured situation, and people working in these environments know that they need to act fast, and with the correct information, and may find colleagues who are not so comfortable with that.
D’Alton says that up to now, soft skills have just been an ethereal thing that people know exist, but it hasn’t been written down and structured somewhere. “Without having it captured and having each soft skill that you should be looking out for named, and put in a table, and giving you some guidance on what good looks like and what bad looks like, people just call them soft skills and paint them all with the same brush,” he says.
The intention of the Crew framework is to identify where soft skills are missing and how to measure the strength of a team
Ultimately, soft skills have often paled into insignificance compared with technical skills, as the industry’s focus is on what can be done, while human capabilities and their shortcomings have not been discussed. But this is changing, and the intention of the framework is to identify where skills are missing and how to measure the strength of a team.
Crew is far from the first guidance on how to deal with people involved in this scenario. ISO 22361:2022 offers guidelines on security and resilience and crisis management, for example.
So, how important are exercises to learn about teamwork? Speaking to Computer Weekly, Robert Hannigan, former director of GCHQ and now head of international business at BlueVoyant, says every company should be doing regular exercises, “which should involve all the key players” and ideally at least one member of the board.
“It’s very important to exercise because you don’t want people in the room for the first time after an incident. You want them to be familiar with each other, and what their role is, otherwise you get all sorts of disastrous consequences,” he says.
Hannigan admits that no exercise is going to be exactly like the real thing, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth doing. “It’s about doubly planning for process, and the muscle memory and the knowledge, so that when it does happen, you can adapt.”
What we know now is that soft skills do matter. Regardless of training and muscle memory, incident response teams are humans and operate differently in this stressful environment. Being able to track and monitor those who thrive and those who need more coaching is an added bonus, and with better preparation comes better appreciation of how people operate.

Trump Has Raised Questions About Fort Knox. His Allies Are Trying to Cash In.
It is one of the more baffling story lines of Donald J. Trump’s second term: The president has said he wants to personally visit Fort Knox to ensure that no one has stolen the government-owned gold bars that are stored there.
Mr. Trump has not explained why any gold might be missing from the nation’s heavily guarded reserves. His own Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, has insisted that there is no reason to worry. “All the gold is there,” Mr. Bessent emphatically told Bloomberg in February, at one point looking directly into a camera and addressing the American people.
Mr. Trump’s interest in the gold reserves has been largely overshadowed by his family’s involvement in various cryptocurrency ventures, which has raised ethical concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
The president has a long history of embracing conspiracy theories, and is known to be a fan of golden and gilded things. It is difficult to say what exactly is behind his recent fanning of unfounded fears about Fort Knox, which have been floating around since at least the 1970s.
A White House spokesperson did not respond when asked to comment for this story.
What is certain is that gold is on many investors’ minds these days. Generally seen as a safe place to park wealth during tumultuous periods, the precious metal has risen to record prices recently, in part because of the global economic uncertainty that the president’s shifting tariff policies caused.
Some of Mr. Trump’s allies, including his eldest son, serve as pitchmen for gold investment companies that advertise heavily on their podcasts or radio shows.
And some of them have been using fresh concerns about Fort Knox to make a profit.

The Gold Conspiracy That Wouldn’t Go Away
If nothing else, Mr. Trump’s Fort Knox obsession has resurfaced one of the deeper cuts in the American conspiracy theory catalog.
One reason the government holds onto such large stores of gold is to confer a sense of financial stability, even though the country moved off the gold standard in the 20th century. According to the United States Mint, 147.3 million ounces of gold, about half of the government’s stash, is held at Fort Knox.
The Kentucky facility, known formally as the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox, almost never allows visitors and is kept under famously heavy lock and key — an inaccessibility that may explain much of the intrigue around it.
One of the main early proponents of the idea that gold was missing from Fort Knox was a lawyer named Peter Beter, who earned a modicum of notoriety in the 1970s by spreading dark theories in a mail-order audio cassette series. Among other things, Mr. Beter believed that “organic robotoids,” controlled by Bolsheviks, had infiltrated the federal government.
By 1974, concerns about the gold reserves grew so intense that a congressional delegation and a few news outlets, including The New York Times, were invited to Fort Knox for a rare inspection. A reporter for The Times described the effect of seeing a vault 6 feet wide and 12 feet deep, stacked with 36,236 glistening gold bars, as “awesome.”
Another wave of concern crested in 2011, when then-Representative Ron Paul, the Texas Republican, introduced a bill calling for an inventory of the reserves. At a subcommittee hearing, Mr. Paul said people had become worried that “the gold had been secretly shipped out of Fort Knox and sold.” He added, “And, still others believe that the bars at Fort Knox are actually gold-plated tungsten.”
U.S. House of Representatives
The inspector general of the Treasury Department at the time, Eric Thorson, told Mr. Paul that audits were performed yearly, with “no exceptions of any consequence.”
U.S. House of Representatives
More recently, Mr. Trump’s first-term Treasury secretary, Steve Mnuchin, had a chance to check on the gold in August 2017, with Mitch McConnell, then the Senate majority leader, in tow. Photos were taken of the men among the gold bars.
“Glad gold is safe!” Mr. Mnuchin wrote on Twitter, now known as X.
U.S. Department of The Treasury
Questions About Ft. Knox Bubble Up Again
The latest concerns appear to have taken off on Feb. 14, when the website ZeroHedge, which occasionally promotes conspiracy theories, tagged Elon Musk in a post on X. The post asked him to make sure the gold at Fort Knox is there.
“Surely it’s reviewed at least every year?” Mr. Musk replied.
“It should be. It isn’t,” ZeroHedge responded. (Mr. Bessent, the Treasury secretary, would later say that the gold is still audited annually.)
Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, a Republican and the son of Ron Paul, chimed in, calling for an audit. “Let’s do it.”
The next day, Alex Jones, the “InfoWars” conspiracy theorist, said on his talk show that when he was a child, his great-uncle told him some of the gold was missing, and that the “deep state” was involved in the “crime of the century.”
Mr. Musk responded to this post as well. “It would be cool to do a live video walkthrough of Fort Knox!” he wrote.
Then came Glenn Beck, the conservative radio and TV host, who posted an open letter to Mr. Trump the next day, asking if he could take a camera crew to Fort Knox to “restore faith in our financial system.”
The chatter about the gold reserves was growing louder.
By Feb. 20, Mr. Trump was telling a press gaggle on Air Force One that he planned to go to Fort Knox to “make sure the gold is there.”
How the Conspiracy Theory Has Been Integrated Into Sales Pitches for… Gold
Since then, the idea that the government’s gold reserves may have gone missing has been integrated into the sales pitches of companies that trade in gold coins and gold investment accounts. The companies advertise heavily on Trump-friendly TV and internet shows.
InfoWars, The Dan Bongino Show, The Ben Shapiro Show, Triggered with Don Jr.
A number of “gold I.R.A.” companies have suggested that a future audit of Fort Knox could determine that gold is missing, setting off a crisis among Americans about the stability of the economy. Amid such chaos, the companies argue, privately held gold would be a lucrative safe haven for investors.
One of the companies, Birch Gold Group, is endorsed by the president’s eldest son and bills itself as “Donald Trump Jr’s gold company.” A recent article on Birch Gold’s website stated that the idea of an “empty Fort Knox” had gone “from conspiracy theory to mainstream concern.” A discovery that gold was missing from Fort Knox, the article stated, would be the “quickest way down for the U.S. dollar.”
“It is only those without physical gold exposure that feel the need to panic, perhaps with good reason, about the greenback’s admittedly dismal prospects,” states the article, which is accompanied by an offer for a “FREE gold IRA info kit.”
The younger Mr. Trump lauded his father’s plans to visit Fort Knox in a Feb. 24 episode of his online talk show, on which he regularly makes pitches for Birch Gold. “If it’s empty,” he said, “I would imagine there’s hell to pay.”
On Feb. 27, Lear Capital, a gold company that Mr. Beck promotes, posted, “As calls for a Fort Knox audit grow louder, investors should stay informed and consider their exposure to gold as part of a diversified portfolio.”
On Instagram, Rogan O’Handley, a conservative influencer who goes by the handle DC Draino, posted a plug for Donald Trump Jr.’s preferred gold company.
“If Fort Knox is empty, do you know what Gold prices will do?,” Mr. O’Handley wrote. “Get a **Free** info packet from Birch Gold – LINK IN MY BIO – to learn more about @birchgold’s tax-advantaged precious metals retirement plans.”
On another section of Birch Gold’s website, a “Message from Donald Trump Jr.” raised the possibility that his father’s administration could “revalue America’s gold reserves on the national balance sheet from their outdated book value of $42” — the price per ounce the government assigns for bookkeeping purposes — “to current market prices.”
This, he wrote, “could cause a surge in gold prices.” He added, “The potential upside for gold investors is substantial.” A gold I.R.A., he added, would be a great way to benefit. He did not mention that Mr. Bessent had publicly stated that he had no plans to revalue the gold reserves.
Above the message was a digitally altered photo of the president at a desk, showing off an important-looking signed document, a wall of gold bricks behind him.
Mr. Trump has still not visited Fort Knox.

Coaching legend Ric Charlesworth finds talk on culture and team building resonates with St John WA volunteers
Coaching legend Ric Charlesworth finds talk on culture and team building resonates with St John WA volunteers
Ric Charlesworth’s talk on culture and team building in Albany last week resonated with St John WA volunteers as the coaching legend passed on his wisdom to mark National Volunteer Week.
Charlesworth, a former opening batsman for WA and four-time hockey Olympian, was the keynote speaker at an event for St John WA volunteers at Retravision Stadium in Albany on May 23.
Volunteers from around the Great Southern gathered under the banner of “connecting communities” to take part in a program of activities which included State officials, specialist paramedics and members of the community who had been impacted by St John WA’s services.
Charlesworth may be best known for coaching the *********** national hockey teams to huge success, but he was also able to draw on his experiences as a doctor and Federal politician when he addressed the volunteers.
His words certainly struck a chord with Denmark volunteer Nerida Harley who said teamwork in her role was vital.
“We all have different characters and different personalities so the ability to work in a team with other people is vital and is exactly what we do,” she said.
“All the things he spoke about applied to us as volunteers.”

Charlesworth said the overall culture of the organisation was key and there was no room to cut corners.
“If you can create an environment where there are no shortcuts you can have an approach to your training and preparation where you can really push yourselves,” he said.
Toni Melia, the district operations manager for the Great Southern, said the event had had positive feedback.
“All the contributors were really well received and Ric was excellent,” she said.
“The key takeaway for the volunteers was a chance to reconnect with each other.
“We are all spread so far and wide that we don’t often get the chance to be together as a whole team so it was a real opportunity for everyone to catch up with old friends and to make new ones.”

Factbox-What is behind the political tension roiling Bangladesh?
Factbox-What is behind the political tension roiling Bangladesh?
DHAKA (Reuters) -Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, faces mounting discontent among citizens and discord among political parties over its plans for elections.
After deadly student-led protests forced long-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India last year, authorities face delays over promised reforms, growing protests, and political division, despite appealing for national unity.
Here are the key issues fuelling the unrest and uncertainty:
ELECTION DISPUTES
The interim government has yet to set a firm election date, after Yunus said national elections would be held sometime between December and June of next year.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia wants polls held by December. Last week, it said it continued support for Yunus’ government would be “difficult” without a firm election plan.
Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman also piled on pressure last week, by calling for elections by year-end and airing dissatisfaction over the political situation.
The National Citizen Party, born out of last year’s deadly student-led protests, insists elections must wait until key reforms are completed.
REFORM DEADLOCK
Progress has been slow on sweeping institutional reforms Yunus promised after Hasina’s exit. His government set up the National Consensus Commission (NCC), a panel of seven, to forge consensus on recommendations by six reform panel.
The NCC said its first round of dialogue with political parties showed broad support for some changes, such as restoring the caretaker government system and judicial independence.
But sharp disagreements cloud more complex proposals for constitutional reform, a two-chamber parliament, and decentralisation of the judiciary.
A second round of talks with political parties on reforms will begin in the first week of June.
LAW AND ORDER
Bangladesh’s unstable law and order situation feeds people’s anxiety, with growing street protests by civil servants, teachers, and political activists in recent weeks disrupting life in major cities, such as Dhaka, the capital.
The unrest worries citizens, who fear it could spiral out of control if a political consensus is not reached soon.
BAN ON HASINA’S PARTY
The Awami League’s registration was suspended this month, effectively barring it from contesting future elections but redoubling concerns about inclusiveness when polls are next held.
Yunus’ press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, called for efforts to escape a war-like situation he said prevailed after the Awami League ban prompted attempts to destabilise the government.
In a Facebook post, Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, blamed the crisis on what he called “Yunus’ politics of vengeance”.

Rainbow jersey for Tanya Bailey as Albany mountain biker wins Masters World Championship after bumpy ride
Rainbow jersey for Tanya Bailey as Albany mountain biker wins Masters World Championship after bumpy ride
Albany-based Olympian and now downhill star Tanya Bailey claimed a thrilling rainbow jersey victory at the 2025 Masters Mountain Bike World Championships in Cairns on May 17.
She pipped fellow *********** Rachel White by finishing the tricky course in 4 minutes 33.356 seconds to take the downhill mountain bike title in the 40-44 age group by just over two-tenths of a second.
White was leading at the fourth split, but Bailey found enough in her legs to pip her over the final stretch.
Bailey’s time was the fastest of all female competitors and placed her 10th overall in the downhill event.
The hurdles along the way to victory were not only found on the course as she had a trail bike, not a downhill bike, and the seeding run was cancelled after a bad ******.
The seeding run determines in which order riders will race so Bailey had just one chance to make it count.
“The downhill bikes have more travel in the suspension and can take ******* hits, but my little trail bike did the business,” she said.
“I just finished with very, very sore arms.”
Bailey decided to enter at the last minute having debated whether it was wise to hurl herself down a mountain before starting a new job.
“I had no sick leave, and the track was a lot steeper and faster than I am used to in WA,” she said.
Camera IconTanya Bailey, middle row, right, with the other Masters medallists. Credit: Dan Hoey/Dan Hoey
The nerves were high for about three days solid beforehand.”
The delay and then cancellation of the seeding race was also disturbing as she had to wait at the top of the track without food or water for an hour.
“It was the same for everyone but no-one likes a last-minute change of schedule.,” Bailey said.
“I did the run and it wasn’t perfect but it was good enough to win, and everyone likes to win.”
In fact, the 2008 Beijing Olympian said becoming champion was less fulfilling than conquering those pre-race hassles which had hampered her build-up.
“I miss some elements of racing at the real elite level — especially the fitness and strength I had then — but it was really good to overcome those hurdles,” she said.
White came home in 4.33.574 for second place with the pair well ahead of Kristy Kerrisk who finished in 5.01.172 for an all-*********** podium.

ICE Agents and State Troopers Team Up in Nashville Operation
ICE Agents and State Troopers Team Up in Nashville Operation
It’s late at night in South Nashville, and the seventh day of a weeklong immigration sweep here. Tennessee state troopers, trailed by federal ICE agents in unmarked cars, raced down deserted streets in this predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. “Are you in Harding? Now — this white one went back down there too.” These are volunteers from The ReMIX Tennessee, an immigrant advocacy organization. They’re trying to document and disrupt what they say is an unprecedented partnership between state troopers and ICE agents. “Yeah it’s putting a lot of fear in the community. Like, I’m having conversations with people’s families who are wanting to self-deport because they don’t want to experience, again, what they experienced.” Self-deportation is something the Trump administration has been promoting. It even began offering charter flights and money to those who choose it. On this night, 24-year-old Gisselle Huerta and 25-year-old Stephanie Alas arrive at the scene of a traffic stop. “This car is pulling in. it’s ICE.” Here you see a state trooper vehicle, and here you see an unmarked car with ICE agents standing by. “So they just pulled someone over, and we came out here and tried to figure out why. Do you need anything from us? You’re good? Yeah we’re going to wait here until they let this gentleman go, and then we’re going to follow behind them.” State troopers can’t typically enforce immigration laws, and ICE agents can’t pull over cars without probable cause or a warrant. But this new strategy, which the Highway Patrol called a cooperative public safety operation, has meant that routine traffic stops have ended in immigration arrests. That’s exactly what happened to Ana and her fiancé, who are both undocumented. She asked to remain anonymous for fear of deportation. “So when he pulls us over, I ask him, ‘Why are you pulling us over?’ And all he says is, ‘Your tints are too dark.’ He didn’t ask us for IDs. He didn’t ask us for anything regarding the car. Nothing — all he said was, ‘Turn off the car. I’ll be right back.’ Next thing you know, we’re surrounded by cars. There’s flashlights in our faces. We can’t see anything.” Ana said no citation was given and that she was taken into custody by ICE. She was held in a cell for hours. “More than 20 in each one because there’s no space. There’s only one bathroom. They start getting us processed one by one. Like it took a long time. It’s hot in there.” She was released and said she wasn’t given a reason. ICE has said they’re targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records. But Ana’s fiancé, who has no known criminal record, was arrested. He was sent to a Louisiana detention facility. During our interview with her, he called. “My son is scared about everything that’s going on in general. He thinks I’m not going to come home from work. People are scared. Nobody wants to come out, and I get it. They’re taking anybody.” During this weeklong operation, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said it made 660 stops for traffic violations. Nearly 200 of those stops resulted in immigration arrests, and just about half of those had prior or pending criminal charges. In a statement to The Times, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said the recent operation focused solely on enforcing Tennessee traffic laws, and that immigration actions were handled separately by federal authorities. The Tennessee governor said their role was to be a partner with ICE, that the operation was an effort to remove criminals from the streets. ICE called the operation a success. “This is what I call home. I’ve been here, like I said, for 27 years, and we’ve never seen anything like this ever. What I want people to know: They’re going to another state after this.”

Everest spins drill bit in search for gold northeast of Southern Cross
Everest spins drill bit in search for gold northeast of Southern Cross
Everest Metals has started spinning the drill bit at its Mt Dimer Taipan project in the hunt for further gold and silver at the site, 150 kilometres northwest of Kalgoorlie.
The reverse circulation drilling program will test four high-priority targets identified through advanced satellite imagery and geochemical anomalies. Targets were defined from the integration of interpreted geochemical anomalies and alteration zones outlined by high-resolution satellite imagery.
The company aims to expand the existing mineralisation at Mt Dimer Taipan, which remains open to the south and at depth, by combining historical data with advanced exploration methods.
The project contains an existing mineral resource of 722,000 tonnes grading 2.1 grams per tonne (g/t) gold for 48,545 ounces.
Management submitted a mining proposal and mine closure plan for the project last August to the Western *********** Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety and anticipates receiving approval within the next two months.
Everest has completed extensive work on its mining proposal, including a geotechnical study, hydrogeological modelling, baseline environmental study and flora and fauna surveys.
The department requested further information in January and Everest submitted updated proposal and closure plans on March 12.
The company also applied for a 45-million-litres-per-annum groundwater licence and plans to drill a water borehole to a depth of 120m to support its upcoming activities and future mining operations at site.
When the mining proposal is approved, Everest expects to launch into mining activities.
Mt Dimer Taipan’s mining proposal involves a cutback of the existing pit to extract ore laterally and from the pit’s base. Everest plans to process the ore nearby.
Given today’s sky-high gold price, the company believes it has a terrific opportunity to charge into the task of turning Mt Dimer Taipan into a profitable mining operation, utilising a toll-treatment agreement with one of the nearby mills. Negotiations with nearby plant operators are ongoing.
Everest’s geological team has interpreted multiple data sets to identify drill targets with the potential to uncover similar mineralisation to that already found in the Mt Dimer gold mining region. By adopting a systematic and methodical exploration strategy, we are confident in leveraging this data to unlock additional gold mineralisation in the upcoming drilling campaign.
Everest completed a geochemical soil sampling program in 2021 to verify historical geochemical results, structures, shear zones and lithological contacts previously mapped by the Geological Survey of WA, which were interpreted from magnetic inferred structures.
The program outlined three distinct geochemical anomalies in part of the company’s ground, returning assay values up to 430 parts per billion (ppb) gold and 420 parts per million arsenic. Four anomalous zones with gold values exceeding 100ppb were identified and two are considered higher-priority targets for testing.
Everest’s recently processed satellite data identified iron oxide and alteration mineral signatures relevant to orogenic gold and banded-iron formation-style exploration. Analysis techniques were applied to identify hydrothermal alteration minerals linked to orogenic gold systems.
An alteration mineral intensity map was generated, highlighting alteration zones in the central part of the licence area, with characteristics similar to those at Mt Dimer Taipan and nearby gold mining districts.
Everest acquired Mt Dimer Taipan in 2020, along with an additional exploration tenement to the west of the project. A range of rotary air-blast drilling, reverse circulation and diamond drilling identified mineralisation at the project.
Former owner Taipan Resources mined the project in the mid-1990s, hauling out 84,000t at about 4.61g/t for 5933 ounces of gold. Several small players later leached the stockpiles for gold and silver, with moderate success.
With gold and silver prices remaining strong, Everest will be hoping for a mountain of positive news from this drilling program.

Sydney commuters face more chaos after Metro services stopped in the CBD during the afternoon rush
Sydney commuters faced more chaos as Metro train services between Barangaroo and Sydenham stopped running during the afternoon rush on Tuesday.
A Sydney Metro spokesman said there was an issue with a pantograph that attaches the carriage to the overhead lines on one of the trains.
The spokesman said services were still operating north between Barangaroo and Tallawong, but shuttle services had replaced trains south between Barangaroo and Sydenham after 4pm.
“Announcements are being made on-board and on platforms,” the spokesman said.
“Troubleshooting of the train is underway.”

Commuters have faced ongoing issues during the past week after several incidents caused long delays on Sydney’s train services.
An emergency at Artarmon delayed services on Monday afternoon, which followed a virtual shutdown last week after an overhead electrical wire collapsed shutting off train lines in the city’s west.
Premier Chris Minns green lit free transport on Monday to compensate passengers for the inconvenience.
“Commuters should give us a chance to remediate on-time running and efficiency and make sure that punctuality is back to where it should be,” he said.
“I say that in the full knowledge that where we’re at the moment is nowhere near good enough.”

Get A Mac Mini With Apple’s Newest Chip For Only $500 At Amazon
Get A Mac Mini With Apple’s Newest Chip For Only $500 At Amazon
Apple’s popular M4 Mac Mini desktop computer is on ***** for only $500 at Amazon. To get the full $99 savings, you’ll need to click the coupon box below the price, which drops it from $549 to $500. Released last fall, the latest entry-level Mac Mini punches above its $599 MSRP. If you’re in the market for a desktop PC for around $500 or less, it would be challenging to find a better option than the 2024 Mac Mini–unless you need to use software that’s unsupported by macOS, of course.
$500 (was $599)
As mentioned, Amazon’s deal is for the base model M4 Mac Mini. At just 5 x 5 x 2 inches, the Mac Mini is an extremely compact machine, so it’s great for those working with minimal desk space. The M4 has a 10-core GPU and 10-core CPU. Four of those CPU cores are performance cores, while the other six are efficiency cores. It also has a 16-core Neural Engine for machine learning operations.
The base model has a 256GB SSD and 16GB Unified Memory. The latter is essentially RAM; it has the “unified” moniker because the CPU and GPU in Apple Silicon chips pull from the same memory bank. The M4 has a memory bandwidth of 120GB per second.
The main downside to the Mac Mini is that you’re basically buying a computer tower, so you need to supply the keyboard, mouse, display, and all the cables beyond the power cord. But it does have a plethora of ports on the front and back:
Mac Mini M4 Ports:
2 USB-C 3.0 ports on the front
3 Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports on the back
HDMI port
Gigabit Ethernet port
3.5mm audio jack
The front two USB-C ports are conveniently located for wireless receivers and corded accessories, while the trio of Thunderbolt 4 ports on the back can be used to quickly transfer files and connect multiple displays at up to 8K resolution. The M4 Mac Mini supports up to three monitors. If you have monitors that support 4K (or higher) resolution, all three can run in 4K+ resolution at 60Hz refresh rates. Refresh rates of up to 240Hz are possible when using one or two monitors instead of three.
Since the 2024 Mac Minis have only been around for about six months, no one knows for sure how well the M4-equipped models will hold up over time. That said, Apple’s track record with Mac Minis and MacBooks suggests that you could use get five-plus years of consistent performance. Five years is a very conservative estimate, as there are plenty of Apple users who still use laptops and desktops purchased 10-plus years ago.
If you want more storage space, memory, or even a higher-performing M4 chipset, Amazon also has deals on other configurations of the newest Mac Mini.
