KFC to create 7,000 jobs in *** and Irish growth plan
KFC has announced plans to create 7,000 new jobs across the *** and Ireland as part of a £1.5bn investment which will include new restaurants.
The fried chicken chain said it would focus on setting up shops in “key locations” such as Ireland and north west England, where it first launched in Britain 60 years ago when it opened a restaurant in Preston.
Consumers in the *** and Ireland spend billions of pounds in fried chicken fast food chains every year.
KFC has set out its five-year growth plan as its rivals expand in Britain and Ireland, including Wingstop and Popeyes, famed for catering singer Beyoncé and rapper Jay-Z’s wedding in 2009.
KFC said that it will plough nearly £500m into 500 new sites as well as upgrading existing shops. It currently has more than 1,000 restaurants across the *** and Ireland, the majority of which are operated by franchisees.
It said the 7,000 new jobs it expects to create in the *** and Ireland will include servers, kitchen-based roles and managers.
KFC added that it will invest in its supply chain to “strengthen long-standing relationships” such as with Pilgrim’s Europe, which is based in Warwick, and McCormick in Buckinghamshire which makes the fast-food firm’s gravy.
KFC is by far the largest fried chicken chain in Britain. But in recent years, smaller competitors have been growing including America’s Wingstop which, in December last year, sold its *** arm to US private equity firm Sixth Street for £400m.
Wingstop currently has around 57 franchised sites in the *** and plans to open another 20.
Meanwhile, Popeyes *** has 65 restaurants across the *** and Ireland after a big expansion last year when it opened 33 shops.
According to market research firm Kantar, Britons spent about £2.8bn on fried chicken from fast food shops in the year to 20 April.
Dave’s Hot Chicken – the US brand which counts rapper Drake and actor Samuel L Jackson among its backers – opened its first restaurant in the *** last year, located in London, and plans to launch a further 60 shops in the *** and Ireland.

India approves stealth fighter programme amid tensions with Pakistan
India approves stealth fighter programme amid tensions with Pakistan
By Shivam Patel
NEW DELHI (Reuters) – India’s defence minister has approved a framework for building the country’s most advanced stealth fighter jet, the defence ministry said on Tuesday, amid a new arms race with Pakistan weeks after a military conflict between the neighbours.
Indian state-run Aeronautical Development Agency, which is executing the programme, will shortly invite initial interest from defence firms for developing a prototype of the warplane, envisaged as a twin-engine 5th generation fighter, the ministry said.
The project is crucial for the Indian Air Force, whose squadrons of mainly Russian and ex-Soviet aircraft have fallen to 31 from an approved strength of 42 at a time when rival China is expanding its air force rapidly. Pakistan has one of China’s most advanced warplanes, the J-10, in its arsenal.
Militaries of nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan faced-off in four days of fighting this month, which saw use of fighter jets, missiles, drones and artillery by both sides before a ceasefire was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
It was the first time both sides utilised drones at scale and the South Asian powers are now locked in a drones arms race, according to Reuters’ interviews with 15 people, including security officials, industry executives and analysts in the two countries.
India will partner with a domestic firm for the stealth fighter programme, and companies can bid independently or as a joint venture, the defence ministry said in a statement, adding that the bids would be open for both private and state-owned firms.
In March, an Indian defence committee had recommended including the private sector in military aircraft manufacturing to shore up the capabilities of the Indian Air Force and reduce the burden on state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, which makes most of India’s military aircraft.
Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh has previously criticised Hindustan Aeronautics for slow delivery of light combat Tejas aircraft, a 4.5 generation fighter, which the firm blamed on slow delivery of engines from General Electric due to supply chain issues faced by the U.S. firm.

India’s iPhone exports to the U.S. soared an estimated 76% in April
India’s iPhone exports to the U.S. soared an estimated 76% in April
“This latest trade war with China, is the type of disturbance that Apple has long been trying to prepare itself for,” says Le Xuan Chiew, a research manager at Omdia.

Shipments of iPhones from India to the U.S. rose 76% in April year on year, estimates from a technology market analyst firm shows. The surge comes as Apple accelerates its “made in India” plans, which analysts say will meet pushback from President Donald Trump and Beijing.
The data from Canalys, now part of Omdia, showed that U.S. iPhones shipped from India in April reached roughly 3,000,000. That’s a stark contrast to shipments from China over the same *******, which fell about 76% from last year to just 900,000.
According to Le Xuan Chiew, a research manager at Omdia, the April numbers show the aggressive measures Apple has taken to adapt to Washington’s tariffs against China, where Apple manufactures most of its iPhones.
“This latest trade war with China, is the type of disturbance that Apple has long been trying to prepare itself for,” he said, adding that the country had first started investing heavily into supply chains in India during the Covid-19 pandemic.
India also surpassed China in iPhone shipments to the United States in March, according to Omdia’s estimates. The uptick came ahead of Trump’s first iteration of “reciprocal tariffs” on April 2. The amount of shipments that month was unusually high and appeared to be the result of the company’s stockpiling, according to Chiew.
The Trump administration’s decision to exempt iPhones and other consumer electronics from his reciprocal tariffs on April 11 did not reverse those trends, with Apple CEO Tim Cook in early may reiterating plans for most iPhone’s sold in the U.S. to be manufactured in India.
IPhones imported from China under Trump’s current term tariffs still face an additional 30% of duties, while the baseline tariff rate is currently 10% for most other countries, including India and Vietnam.
Growth to plateau?
While the jump in India’s iPhone shipments in March and April showed the adaptability of Apple’s supply chains, that growth is expected to slow down for the rest of the year, according to Omdia’s Chiew.
“India’s manufacturing capacity isn’t expected to grow fast enough to take the entirety of U.S. demand. It’s still too early,” he said, noting that the company recently began shipments of Apple’s most cutting-edge iPhone 16 Pro.
Omdia estimates that U.S. iPhone demand is about 20 million a quarter, with India expected to be able to match that level only by 2026.
Meanwhile, Daniel Newman, CEO of Futurum Group, noted that shipment numbers reflect final assembly, but are not representative of the entire supply chain and manufacturing process.
“It was actually a very low lift for them to migrate more and more of the final assembly from China to India,” he said, adding that a vast majority of the sub-assemblies are all still in China.
Pushback from Washington and Beijing
Analysts said India’s ability to expand its iPhone capacity could be curbed by protectionist measures from Washington and Beijing, which both have issues with Apple’s reaction against tariffs.
According to Newman, while this is the smart thing for Apple to do, it’s also playing a “dangerous game” with Trump, as it doesn’t meet the objectives of his administration’s tariffs.
On Friday, Trump threatened to slap a 25% tariff on all iPhone shipments in a social media post, reiterating that he expects iPhones sold in the U.S. to be manufactured and built domestically, “not India, or anyplace else.”
China, for its part, is not expected to make it easy for Apple to diversify out of the country, Newman said, adding that the company has served as trade leverage for Beijing.
According to reports from local outlets in India, Beijing has tried to make it harder for India to access the high-tech machinery and talent from China needed to further support Apple’s suppliers in India.
Dan Ives, global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, told CNBC that Apple’s India plans will pose some challenges regarding logistics, distribution and navigating complex supply chains in the country. However, India is nevertheless expected to remain a “life raft” for Apple under the tariff situation.
“Producing iPhones in the U.S. is a fairy tale in our view and Apple will continue to plow ahead on the India path. Cook will look to negotiate with Trump but India is the focus and not changing.”

Nvidia confirms another ****** screen bug, and it’s a ****** one hitting RTX 5060 GPUs this time – but a fix has been rushed out
Nvidia confirms another ****** screen bug, and it’s a ****** one hitting RTX 5060 GPUs this time – but a fix has been rushed out
Nvidia’s GPUs are facing another bug causing ****** screen crashes
This affects RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti GPUs and won’t let you boot to the desktop
Nvidia has a fix to hand, but applying it could be a somewhat tricky matter for some folks – though the impact of this bug isn’t widespread, apparently
Nvidia has released a fix for owners of RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti graphics cards who are seeing their PC boot to a ****** screen.
This is a ****** problem, of course, leaving those affected unable to use their PC unless they have some way of getting around the ****** screen that’s presenting itself and bringing the boot process to a screeching halt, instead of allowing people to get to their desktop.
VideoCardz highlighted Nvidia’s confirmation of this problem in a support document which also provides a tool to cure the showstopping bug, namely the Nvidia GPU UEFI Firmware Update Tool v2.0.
You may like
Nvidia makes it very clear that this patch – which is an update for the motherboard BIOS – should only be installed by those who are encountering ****** screen woes. If you aren’t affected by this issue, don’t grab this tool.
Of course, there’s a slight problem in terms of downloading and using the tool on a PC with this bug, given that as mentioned, you seemingly can’t get to the desktop in the first place.
Not with a normal boot, anyway, which is why Nvidia provides a list of workarounds to get your PC booted in its support material. That includes heading into the BIOS (which you can do before your PC starts to boot, following the instructions provided with your computer or motherboard) and ensuring you are in UEFI boot mode and not Legacy/CSM mode.
That’s because the latter can cause the ****** screen problem, but do note that some (older) PCs may not have a UEFI option, in which case, Nvidia advises you to “contact customer service of your graphics card manufacturer for a legacy VBIOS update.” (Not meaning Nvidia itself, of course, but the maker of your board, such as Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and so forth).
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
The other main trick that should work to get to the desktop is if you have integrated graphics (on your processor), you could switch to use that (in the BIOS graphics settings) instead of your Nvidia GPU. Or if your CPU doesn’t have integrated graphics, you could use an another (old or borrowed) Nvidia GPU in your PC temporarily.
Analysis: A frustrating issue with limited impact
This is a knotty problem, then, or it could be in some scenarios, potentially requiring a bit of fiddling around to get to a place where you can install the patch to resolve it.
That’s far from ideal, but the good news is that there don’t seem to be many gamers affected by this bug, as VideoCardz points out. That’s comforting to hear in some ways – even if it may partially be a reflection of the lack of popularity of the RTX 5060 in particular for various reasons – but clearly some GPU owners will be hit by this snag, otherwise Nvidia wouldn’t be bothering with a patch to cure it.
Sadly, Nvidia graphics card owners have been facing ****** screen issues from boot, or ****** screen lock-ups during everyday use or gaming, ever since new GeForce drivers were released with support for Blackwell GPUs. And that doesn’t just extend to those RTX 5000 graphics cards, either, but RTX 4000 models have been affected too (or even the generation before that in a scattering of reported cases).
In short, there’s been a general wonkiness with Nvidia’s graphics drivers since the RTX 5000 series arrived, and this is the latest episode. All in all, it’s not a good look for Team Green.

Why a 0.66% Dividend Makes More Sense Than a Well-Known 6% Payer
Why a 0.66% Dividend Makes More Sense Than a Well-Known 6% Payer
If you’re like me, when you see an outsized dividend yield, you stop and immediately do the mental math. How much would we get back in payouts from, say, a 9.3% payer if we were to invest $10,000? Or $20,000? Or $100,000?
But savvy contrarians we are, we know to push back on this initial reaction and look deeper.
That’s because of something I know pretty much goes unsaid among contrarian income investors like us: Those big yields can be (and usually are) a danger sign. Truth is, a rising dividend is only one possible reason for a high payout.
And in fact, it’s the least likely one.
More often, a high yield stems from something we want no part of: a plunging share price. Consider Vail Resorts (NYSE:), with a current yield of around 6% as I write this.
Sounds great, right? Too bad the high current yield papers over a litany of problems. The first? Slowing dividend growth (indeed, it’s come to a stop!) as inconsistent winters hamper visits to its resorts.
MTN’s Dividend Goes Back to the Bunny Hill
The (literally!) tough climate has put pressure on MTN’s free cash flow (FCF), resulting in a jump in its payout ratio: As I write this, Vail’s payout occupies an uncomfortable 84% of the last 12 months of FCF.
If you’re looking for one main reason for the slowdown in payout growth, that’s it.
The company is also still reckoning with the aftermath of a strike by ski patrollers at its Park City, Utah, resort last season, resulting in closed lifts and long lineups. Worse, the work stoppage came right in the middle of the year-end holidays—adding to the PR nightmare.
With all that in mind, it’s not hard to believe that the stock has drastically underperformed the market: Even when you include reinvested dividends, MTN’s total return is 14% in the red in the last five years—while the returned 113%!
6% Yield Fails to Make Up for “Downhill” Total Return
This is all a (perhaps long-winded!) way of saying we need to look beyond the shiny veneer of a high yield. I’ve got a proven tool for doing just that, which we’ll get into next. We’ll also delve into two “authentic” dividend growers for you to consider, too.
Shareholder Yield Beats Dividend Yield in Every Way
At the end of the day, a dividend stock has three ways to pay us:
Its current payout: This, of course, is the dividend we get after we buy.
Dividend growth, which increases the yield on our original buy and acts like a “magnet” on the share price, with the rising payout pulling the share price up.
Share buybacks, which cut the number of shares outstanding, juicing earnings per share and other per-share metrics.
Buybacks get a bad rap, but they shouldn’t, because when they’re done right (i.e., when the stock is cheap), they can seriously juice our returns. This is another problem with the current yield—it tells us nothing about this buyback effect.
This is where my favorite measure of how much a company is rewarding shareholders comes in. It’s called shareholder yield, and it includes buybacks and dividends.
Visa’s Shareholder Yield Crushes Its “Headline” Yield
To see it in action, let’s consider payment-processing giant Visa (NYSE:), a holding in my Hidden Yields dividend-growth advisory. The stock really does nothing but move up and to the right, powered by global economic growth and its “tollbooth” role on the rising tide of digital payments.
Unfortunately, most investors miss out on this megatrend-powered stock because they look at its low current yield—just 0.66% as I write this—and move on.
But let’s ignore that for a second and zero in on Visa’s payout growth, which has been strong: The dividend is up 392% in the last decade. It’s no coincidence that the share price has gained almost the exact same amount:
Visa’s “Dividend Magnet” in Action
And because of that payout growth, investors who bought Visa a decade ago are yielding 3.4% on their original buy now. Sure, that doesn’t exactly knock our socks off, but it is five times greater than today’s 0.66% current yield.
Now let’s move on to buybacks: Visa has taken 21% of its shares off the market in the last five years, making all those per-share metrics look better. By the way, if you don’t think buybacks matter, check out how Visa’s share price took off starting in early 2024, when management really amped up its buyback action:
Share Count Dives, Stock Price Soars
The beautiful thing about shareholder yield is that it combines all three types of shareholder rewards: current dividend, payout growth and buybacks. Let’s look at how to calculate it—then I’ll drop a stock with an even higher shareholder yield.
How to Calculate Shareholder Yield
To calculate shareholder yield, take the amount a company spent on share repurchases in the preceding 12 months, deduct any cash brought in through share issuances, then add in the total spent on dividends.
You then take that sum and divide it into the company’s market cap, or the value of all its outstanding shares.
In Visa’s case, that comes out to $4.43 billion spent on dividends and $18.98 billion spent on buybacks, for a total of $23.4 billion in total shareholder returns in the 12 months ended March 31, 2025.
With a $686.4-billion market cap, we can say that Visa sports a 3.4% shareholder yield—again about five times more than the current dividend yield of 0.66%.
Now, in light of Visa’s strong recent gains—and the fact that its share price has caught up to its payout growth (we prefer a lag for extra “snap back” upside”)—we consider Visa a “hold.” But that’s not the case for our next shareholder-yield champ, which is a smart “buy” now.
Beyond Visa: This Stock Delivers an Eye-Popping 8.7% Shareholder Yield
ConocoPhillips (NYSE:) is an oil producer and explorer that’s primed to thrive under Trump 2.0’s drive to drill. With permit approvals likely returning to the breakneck pace of 2018 to 2020, COP is near the top of the winners’ list here.
That, in turn, will help drive up the dividend, which yields 3.6% and whose growth has been flat for more than a year. The stock will get an assist from the company’s ultra-safe dividend payout ratio of about 42% of its last 12 months of FCF.
Meantime, COP’s shareholder yield is far higher than the 3.6% yield on its dividend alone. In the last 12 months, COP spent $3.7 billion on dividends and $5.7 billion on buybacks, for a total of $9.4 billion on all shareholder rewards. Divide that by COP’s $107.8-billion market cap and you get a shareholder yield of 8.7%
Management’s shareholder friendliness is one reason to like the stock. Its bright future as permitting accelerates is another. Both set up a timely opportunity to buy.

Wall Street Journal Shatters Core Trump Fantasy In Editorial Urging GOP ‘Revolt’
The Wall Street Journal on Monday urged Republican senators to take the lead in confronting Russia over its ongoing invasion of Ukraine and warned how Donald Trump and his allies’ “naivete” on Russian President Vladimir Putin is only allowing the bloodshed to continue.
In an editorial titled “Time for a GOP Senate Revolt on Sanctions Against Putin,” the newspaper’s conservative editorial board slammed Trump’s stalled bid for peace, which he promised to bring on day one of his second term.
“Trump and his advisers fancy themselves steely-eyed realists on foreign policy,” it wrote. “But on Mr. Putin they are starry-eyed idealists, mouthing ‘peace’ as if they can make it happen by wishing it were so.”
The Journal, which has needled Trump repeatedly in recent weeks, said the president ― who expressed his surprise this weekend after Russia launched yet another large-scale attack on Ukraine, despite Putin’s lip service to peace talks ― is essentially allowing Russia’s authoritarian leader to drag out the invasion.
It called on GOP lawmakers to push a bipartisan bill ― co-sponsored by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and signed by dozens of colleagues ― to slap 500% tariffs on products imported into the U.S. from countries that buy Russian oil and gas.
“Energy sales are Mr. Putin’s financial lifeline” and sanctions may change his “calculations about the price of war,” it said. Senate Republicans “can act whether or not Mr. Trump approves” and force Trump to “face the hard reality” of Putin’s ambitions, the board concluded.

Russia seizes Ukrainian border villages as its massive bombing campaign slows
Russia seizes Ukrainian border villages as its massive bombing campaign slows
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces have taken four border villages in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, a local official said Tuesday, days after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he had issued an order to establish a buffer zone along the border.
Meanwhile, a Russian bombing campaign that had escalated in recent days slowed overnight as far fewer Russian drones targeted Ukrainian towns and cities.
Moscow’s invasion has shown no signs of stopping despite months of intense U.S.-led efforts to secure a ceasefire and get traction for peace talks. Since Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Turkey earlier this month for their first direct talks in three years, a large prisoner exchange has been the only tangible outcome, but negotiations have brought no significant breakthrough.
Between Friday and Sunday, Russia launched around 900 drones at Ukraine, officials said, amid a spate of large-scale bombardments. On Sunday night, Russia launched its biggest drone attack of the 3-year war against Ukraine, firing 355 drones.
From Monday to Tuesday, Russia fired 60 drones at Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said Tuesday.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed its air defenses had downed 99 Ukrainian drones overnight over seven Russian regions.
In Sumy, Russian forces are trying to advance deeper after capturing villages, Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy regional military administration, said in a statement.
Ukrainian forces are endeavoring to hold the line, he said. Residents of the captured villages were evacuated earlier, and there is no immediate threat to civilians, Hryhorov said.
Putin visited the Kursk region last week for the first time since Moscow claimed that it drove Ukrainian forces out of the area last month. Kyiv officials have denied the claim. Ukraine seized a pocket of land in Kursk last August.
The long border remains vulnerable to Ukrainian incursions, Putin said. He said he told the Russian military to create a “security buffer zone” along the border but provided no public details of where the proposed zone would be or how far it would stretch.
Putin said a year ago that a Russian offensive at the time aimed to create a buffer zone in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region. That could have helped protect Russia’s Belgorod border region, where frequent Ukrainian attacks have embarrassed the Kremlin.

Why is King Charles in Canada, and what is the throne speech?
Why is King Charles in Canada, and what is the throne speech?
Ali Abbas Ahmadi
BBC News, Toronto
Watch: Why King Charles III’s trip to Canada is more than just a royal visit
The pomp and pageantry were on full display when King Charles arrived in Canada on Monday, on his first trip to the country since his coronation.
He is due to deliver the Speech from the Throne to open the 45th session of Canada’s parliament in Ottawa on Tuesday.
The King is the head of state of Canada – and of 13 other Commonwealth realms such as Australia, New Zealand and several Caribbean states – as well as the ***.
The King, who has travelled with Queen Camilla, previously journeyed to Canada several times as the Prince of Wales. This is his 20th visit.
What is a Speech from the Throne?
Tuesday’s address would traditionally be given by the governor general, who is the monarch’s top representative in Canada. They read it on behalf of the prime minister, to set out the government’s agenda when a new parliamentary session is about to begin.
Canada’s House of Commons and Senate cannot conduct any public business before the Speech from the Throne is made.
It is so-called because it is typically read from the seat in the Senate chamber that is reserved for the monarch or their representative in Canada.
The current governor general is Mary Simon. But this time, newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited the King himself to inaugurate the new parliament.
When was the last time Canada’s head of state read the throne speech?Getty Images
Elizabeth II delivered the address in 1977
While it is not unprecedented for the throne speech to be read by the monarch, the last time this happened was in October 1977, when Elizabeth II read the speech for the second time. The first was in 1957.
This will be the first time a king opens a new session of parliament. King Charles’s grandfather George VI granted royal assent to several bills when he visited Canada in 1939, but he never delivered a throne speech.
Why was the King invited to Canada?
Earlier in May, Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had invited the King to formally open Canada’s 45th session of parliament.
His request was viewed as a strategic one, as it came amid strained ties between Canada and its powerful neighbour the United States.
US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on Canada, and has repeatedly referred to it as the “51st state”. He also disparagingly referred to Carney’s predecessor Justin Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau”.
Speaking in Ottawa, Carney said the King’s visit “clearly underscores the sovereignty of our country”. He told reporters: “This is a historic honour that matches the weight of our times.”
Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon said the visit “highlights the enduring relationship between Canada and the Crown”.
“Now more than ever, we need to come together to ensure a future that builds on our shared global values of democracy, equality and peace,” she said.
Watch: The King plants trees and meets locals on first day of Canada visit
What do we know about the visit?
King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived at Ottawa’s Macdonald-Cartier International Airport at 13:15 EST (17:15 GMT) on Monday, and were greeted by Governor General Mary Simon, Prime Minister Mark Carney and his wife, Diana Fox Carney.
Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President Natan Obed, and Métis National Council President Victoria Pruden were also at the airport.
The trip began at Lansdowne Park, where the royal couple met individuals and organisations showcasing ********* identity and diversity.
They then made their way to Rideau Hall – the residence of Canada’s governor general and the official residence of the monarch when in Canada. There, the King took part in a tree-planting ceremony.
He then held separate private meetings with Simon and Carney.
On Tuesday morning, the King and Queen will head to Canada’s Senate accompanied by a royal *******, where they will receive full military honours – including a 100-person guard of honour from the 3rd Battalion of the Royal ********* Regiment, an inspection of the guard and the band, and a 21-gun salute.
Shortly after 11:00 local time, the King will deliver his Speech from the Throne to open the 45th session of parliament.
The royal couple will then pay their respects to Canada’s fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial, before leaving the country later that day.
How has the King shown support for Canada?Getty Images
King Charles wore his ********* medals when he visited the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier in March
In his role as head of state, the monarch is expected to avoid straying into politics. He instead appears to have sent coded signals and made symbolic gestures of support for Canada amid Trump’s threats.
The King praised Canada as a “proud, resilient and compassionate country” in February, on the 60th anniversary of the first raising of the country’s maple leaf flag – an event that might have otherwise passed without royal intervention.
When he visited aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales on 4 March, he appeared wearing a set of ********* medals.
The same month, when he sat for the Commonwealth Service – an annual celebration of Commonwealth countries in London – he did so on a ********* chair.
And at a tree-planting ceremony at Buckingham Palace earlier this year, the tree he chose was a maple.

New US-backed group says it has begun aid distribution in Gaza
New US-backed group says it has begun aid distribution in Gaza
A controversial new aid distribution group backed by the US and Israel has begun working in Gaza.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) said lorry loads of food had been delivered to secure sites and that it had begun distribution to people. It did not say where or how much aid had been handed out.
The group, which uses armed American security contractors, aims to bypass the UN as the main supplier of aid to the 2.1 million Palestinians in Gaza, where experts are warning of a looming famine after an Israeli blockade that lasted 11 weeks.
The UN and many aid groups have refused to co-operate with GHF’s plans, which they say contradict humanitarian principles and appear to “weaponise aid”.
Israel says a new system is needed to stop ****** stealing aid, which the group denies doing.
In a statement sent to journalists on Monday night, GHF announced that it had “commenced operations in Gaza” and delivered “truck loads of food to its Secure Distribution Sites, where distribution to the Gazan people began”.
“More trucks with aid will be delivered [on Tuesday], with the flow of aid increasing each day,” it added.
Handout photos showed just over a dozen men carrying away boxes from an unspecified location.
The BBC has asked the GHF how many lorry loads of aid got in and how many people were able to pick up aid, but it has not yet received a response.
The GHF’s statement also said John Acree, a former senior manager at USAID – the US government agency responsible for administering foreign aid – had been named interim executive director.
Acree succeeds Jake Wood, who resigned from the position on Sunday. Wood said the group’s aid distribution system could not work in a way that would be able to fulfil the principles of “humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence”.
The GHF’s board rejected the criticism, accusing “those who benefit from the status quo” of being more focused on “tearing this apart than on getting aid in”.
It said the system was fully consistent with humanitarian principles and would feed a million Palestinians by the end of the week.
Under the GHF’s mechanism, security-screened Palestinians will be expected to collect boxes containing food and basic hygiene items for their families from a small number of distribution sites which are mainly in southern Gaza. The sites will be secured by American contractors, with Israeli troops patrolling the perimeters.
UN and other aid agencies insisted they will not co-operate with any scheme that fails to respect fundamental humanitarian principles.
They have warned that the GHF’s system will practically exclude those with mobility issues, including those with injuries, disabilities and the elderly, force further displacement, expose thousands of people to harm, make aid conditional on political and military aims, and set an unacceptable precedent for aid delivery around the world.
They have said they have thousands of lorries waiting to go into Gaza and a detailed plan to ensure aid gets to people in need and looting is minimised.
****** has warned Palestinians not to co-operate with GHF’s system, saying it would “replace order with chaos, enforce a policy of engineered starvation of ************ civilians, and use food as a weapon during wartime”.
GHF’s statement condemned what it said were “******’s death threats targeting aid groups supporting humanitarian operations at GHF’s Safe Distribution Sites, and efforts to block the Gazan people from accessing aid at the sites”.
Israel imposed a total blockade on humanitarian aid to Gaza on 2 March and resumed its military offensive two weeks later, ending a two-month ceasefire with ******.
It said the steps were meant to put pressure on the armed group to release the 58 hostages still held in Gaza, up to 23 of whom are believed to be alive.
On 19 May, the Israeli military launched an expanded offensive that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said would see troops “take control of all areas” of Gaza. The plan reportedly includes completely clearing the north of civilians and forcibly displacing them to the south.
Netanyahu also said Israel would allow a “basic” amount of food into Gaza to prevent a famine following pressure from allies in the US.
Since then, Israeli authorities say they have allowed at least 665 lorry loads of humanitarian aid, including flour, baby food and medical supplies, into Gaza.
However, the head of the UN’s World Food Programme warned on Sunday that the aid was only a “drop in the bucket” of what was needed in the territory to reverse the catastrophic levels of hunger, amid significant shortages of basic foods and skyrocketing prices.
Half a million people face starvation in the coming months, according to an assessment by the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response ******’s cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.
At least 53,977 people have been killed in Gaza since then, including 3,822 since Israel resumed its offensive 10 weeks ago, according to the territory’s ******-run health ministry.

WhatsApp’s Native iPad App Could See a Release Soon
WhatsApp’s Native iPad App Could See a Release Soon
A native WhatsApp app for the iPad is said to be in the works. The Meta-owned instant messaging client seems to have teased the arrival of WhatsApp for iPad on a social media platform. For years, WhatsApp has been reported to be developing a new app that works natively on Apple’s tablet, however, it is yet to see the light of day. While a beta version has been offered to users under the company’s TestFlight programme, the public release has not happened yet.
Native WhatsApp App for iOS
WhatsApp’s official handle on X (formerly Twitter) reacted to another post from April with the ‘eyes’ emoji. The original post stated, “they should add whatsapp on iPad”, and the reaction usually conveys observing something with interest or piquing interest. This indicates that a native WhatsApp app could finally materialise after years of rumours.
While WhatsApp is still available on the iPad, it is through WhatsApp Web. This means it does not offer native functionality similar to the iPhone app even though users can still send and receive messages.
[Hidden Content]
— WhatsApp (@WhatsApp) May 26, 2025
While the official release date remains unknown, it could offer a new companion mode that allows users to send and receive messages even when the primary device, such as a smartphone, is out of network coverage or is switched off.
Users will be able to use this functionality by navigating to WhatsApp Settings and then tapping on Linked devices > Link a device. This will start the process of linking a new device in companion mode. This feature was discovered in WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.19.1.7 version and is only said to be available to beta testers registered via Apple’s TestFlight programme as of now.
This development comes amidst reports that Meta is also developing a native Instagram app for the iPad to “further drive usage of Instagram”.
Two factors are reported to have contributed to this decision — TikTok’s ban in the US and recent tariffs levied on several countries, including India, by US President Donald Trump. Although Instagram is currently available on the iPad, it is an experience originally developed for mobile devices, being a zoomed in version of the app. However, its development could take a considerable amount of time, as evident by Meta’s development of the WhatsApp app for iPad.

South Africa not giving ‘special dispensation’ to Musk’s Starlink, minister says
South Africa not giving ‘special dispensation’ to Musk’s Starlink, minister says
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -South Africa’s Communications Minister Solly Malatsi said on Tuesday that his proposed draft policy that recognises alternatives to ****** ownership requirements was not only meant for Elon Musk’s Starlink.
Last Friday, Malatsi’s department proposed the recognition of so-called “equity equivalent” investment programmes in the information and communication technology sector, which could encourage SpaceX’s Starlink and other communications companies to operate in the country.
“I am pretty clear that transformation is sacrosanct in our country, that it’s a non-negotiable in order for the country to achieve its aspirations,” the minister told a parliamentary briefing.
“We are not attempting to open a special dispensation for Starlink or any other company or an individual.”
South Africa’s Electronic Communications Act requires foreign-owned communications companies to sell 30% of equity in their local subsidiaries to historically-disadvantaged groups to obtain an operating licence, a provision criticised by Starlink and other companies.
The draft policy has drawn criticism from the opposition and the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies, Khusela Diko, who have said that it was going too far to appease foreign businesses like Starlink.
