Samsung Galaxy A56 5G Users Report Bootloop Issues After Latest One UI 7 Update
Samsung recently released a software update for the Galaxy A56 5G which brought quick access to Gemini — Google artificial intelligence (AI) assistant — via the side button. While this functionality was aimed at enhancing productivity, it is said to have left many devices unable to be used at all. Samsung Galaxy A56 5G users have reported bootloop issues after updating to the latest One UI 7 version with the handset getting stuck on the boot-up screen, although a quick fix seems to resolve the issue.
Samsung Galaxy A56 5G Bootloop Issues
Earlier this month, Samsung rolled out an Android 15-based update with the build number A566BXXU3AYDK for the Galaxy A56 5G. But soon after, the South Korean technology conglomerate’s community forum was flooded with users reporting problems with their handsets.
In one of the posts (via Dutch publication GalaxyClub), a user mentioned that their device got stuck at the boot up screen which shows the gears turning around, leaving them unable to use it. Even carrying out a soft reset did not seem to solve the issue. While they aimed to carry out a hard reset, the recovery menu couldn’t be brought up.
However, there seems to be a quick fix for the problem. As per the forum post, removing the SIM card tray and then restarting the Galaxy A56 5G does bring a resolution. For this, the phone needs to be powered off before removing the tray. While this fix is for those users who have a physical SIM card, eSIM users can also get their handset back in a working condition by simply skipping the step when asked for a SIM password.
That said, it is just a workaround and not a permanent fix for the bootloop issue on the Samsung Galaxy A56 5G.
About the One UI 7 Update
Samsung says the update brings a new way for users to access Google’s Gemini and other digital assistants. Instead of the corner swipe, they can invoke the AI assistant by pressing and holding the side button. It is customisable and its functionality can be changed in Settings, as per the company.
Gemini is also said to be better integrated with Samsung apps like Calendar, Clock, Notes, and Reminder. Users can carry out various in-app actions via voice commands through Gemini. For example, you can ask the AI assistant about a YouTube video, save something in the Notes app, or find more information about your favourite sports team’s schedule and add it to your calendar.

SpaceX set for next Starship launch after fiery failures
SpaceX set for next Starship launch after fiery failures
SpaceX is set Tuesday for the next test flight of its Starship megarocket — the linchpin of founder Elon Musk’s Mars ambitions — after the vessel’s last two outings ended in fiery explosions.
A launch window opens at 6:30 pm (2330 GMT) from the company’s Starbase facility near a southern Texas village that recently voted to become a city, also called Starbase.
Standing 403 feet (123 meters) tall, Starship is the largest and most powerful launch vehicle ever built, and it carries Musk’s hopes of making humanity a multi-planetary species.
NASA is also counting on a variant of Starship to serve as the crew lander for Artemis 3, the mission to return Americans to the Moon.
But the last two tests ended with the upper stages erupting into fiery cascades that sent debris raining down over Caribbean islands and disrupting flights — piling more pressure onto SpaceX to get it right this time.
The company is betting that its aggressive testing approach, which helped it become the dominant force in commercial spaceflight, will once again pay off.
Still, it acknowledged in a statement that progress “won’t always come in leaps.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, SpaceX is shifting personnel and resources to the Starship program in a push to have the vehicle ready for a Mars mission as soon as next year.
On the bright side, SpaceX has now demonstrated three times that it can catch the Super Heavy first stage booster in the giant robotic arms of its launch tower — a daring feat of engineering that it says is key to making the system rapidly reusable and reducing costs.
It will be reusing a Super Heavy booster for the first time on this ninth flight. As a result, it will not attempt a catch this time, opting instead for a splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.
Similar to previous missions, the upper stage will attempt to fly halfway around the globe and splash down in the Indian Ocean.
For the first time, SpaceX will also aim to deploy a payload: mock-ups of its Starlink internet satellites, which are expected to burn up in the atmosphere.
In issuing its launch approval, the Federal Aviation Administration said it had nearly doubled the airspace closure zone to 1,600 nautical miles east of the launch site. It is coordinating with authorities in the ***, the British-controlled Turks and Caicos Islands, the Bahamas, Mexico, and Cuba.
The FAA also recently approved an increase in annual launches from five to 25 — stating the increased frequency would not adversely impact the environment and overruling objections from conservation groups who warned the expansion could endanger sea turtles and shorebirds.

F1 Q&A: Monaco Grand Prix two-stop rule, Racing Bulls and Williams tactics, Mercedes and Imola future
F1 Q&A: Monaco Grand Prix two-stop rule, Racing Bulls and Williams tactics, Mercedes and Imola future
Do you think the Monaco Grand Prix would have been any better without the mandatory two-stop rule? – Sukhpal
The new rule introduced for the Monaco Grand Prix this year was a requirement to use three sets of tyres in the race.
The idea was to increase the number of strategic options available, effectively force teams to do two stops and manufacture extra jeopardy.
On that basis, it worked, up to a point.
All weekend, teams were talking about the sheer number of strategic possibilities in the race. And after the race, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said: “There was a very large variety of scenarios. So in this sense I think it was interesting.”
Whether this made the race better for spectators is a different question.
And while the rule change increased the nervousness and tested the brainpower of the strategy engineers, it made no difference to the result – the only changes in the order of the top 10 were Lewis Hamilton making up his grid penalty and Fernando Alonso retiring.
There is an argument that, in some ways, the rule made the race worse, because it increased the possibility for teams to ‘game’ the result by using their drivers strategically.
Racing Bulls started this, by using Liam Lawson to back up the pack to ensure Isack Hadjar could pit without losing position, before Hadjar returned the favour.
Because they had, Williams then did the same – and then Mercedes.
Some drivers were not comfortable about this.
Williams’ Alex Albon said: “I know we put on a bad show for everyone, and I know we made a few angry drivers behind us in the process as well.
“The two-stop just made us do it twice, rather than once. Just frustrating. Apologies to everyone who watched that. That wasn’t very pretty.”
Their team boss James Vowles even apologised to Mercedes’ Toto Wolff mid-race. Wolff said: “Yeah, I [was] sent a text in the race. He said: ‘I’m sorry. We had no choice given what happened ahead’.
“I answered: ‘We know’.
“He had two cars in the points, and I think that when it started was when the RBs backed us up. So that is what he had to do.”
And then there was the fact that it also made it easier for F1’s controversial red-flag tyre-change rule to be exploited, more of which in the next answer.
The issue at the bottom of all this is the impossibility of overtaking at Monaco, a problem that has existed for about 50 years, as Lando Norris pointed out, and is not solely caused by the size of the current cars, although that has made it even worse.
So, it has to be asked – is it right to introduce such artificial gimmicks to try to fix a problem that is unfixable without track changes? And is Monaco broken, anyway?
As Max Verstappen put it: “Of course I get it, but I don’t think it has worked. You can’t race here anyway, so it doesn’t matter what you do. One stop, 10 stops.
“We were almost doing Mario Kart. Then we have to install bits on the car. Maybe you can throw bananas around. I don’t know. Slippery surface.”

Google Gemini to Reportedly Add Simpler Reply Selection and Sharing Feature
Google Gemini to Reportedly Add Simpler Reply Selection and Sharing Feature
Google is reportedly making it easier to select and share parts of Gemini’s responses. As per the report, Google is working on adding a quality-of-life improvement to its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that will allow users to directly long-press and drag to select specific portions of text and quickly share it with other apps. If implemented, this will be much easier than the current workflow, where users have to go through four different steps before they can select Gemini’s responses.
Google Adds a Quality-of-Life Update to Gemini
According to an Android Authority report, the Mountain View-based tech giant is working on a new feature to allow selecting text directly on the Gemini app’s chat interface. The publication found evidence of the feature in the latest Google app beta (version 16.20.48.sa.arm64). Notably, it is not an active feature, so beta testers will not be able to try it out just now.
Currently, selecting text on the mobile app of Gemini requires a few steps. That is, if you want to select part of the text. However, if you want to copy the entire text, Gemini gives you a copy option at the bottom of every response (two blank pages icon) next to the share button.
Unfortunately, this does not work if you just want to copy or share just a portion of the text. To select text, you first have to long-press the text or tap the three-dotted icon to surface the Select text option. Tapping on it takes you to a separate page where you can long-press and drag the desired text to select it, and then copy it.
This process can be frustrating if one has to select and copy multiple parts of the text over and over again. However, as per the report, the under-development feature will allow you to select the text directly from the chat window, saving a couple of taps. The feature is said to work on paragraph-style responses, however, you will reportedly only be able to select one bullet point in a single attempt, which might make sharing bulleted responses a hassle.
It should be noted that this feature was uncovered during an Android application package (APK) teardown process and spotted within the code of the Google app. However, this does not mean that this feature will be shipped or in the same form. Many times, such experimental features are ditched by developers later, and other times, the final version looks entirely different. Until the company makes an official statement about the feature, it should be taken with a healthy amount of scepticism.

An Emma Frost and a Venom Emote Are Going To be Seriously Spammed
An Emma Frost and a Venom Emote Are Going To be Seriously Spammed
Marvel Rivals’ Season 2.5 update hasn’t even officially launched yet, but we can already tell that this upcoming Emma Frost skin is going to take over the game. The mid-season update is going to come with a Combat Chest mini-pass on May 30, and the new Make It Rain emote for Emma Frost is part of the first free tier.
And what we want to see is Emma Frost making it rain while Venom does his infamous twerk. These emotes are equal parts absurd and iconic, and we can see them becoming the most spammed in-game animations since Marvel Rivals launched, and fans seem both ready and willing to do just that.
Marvel Rivals is about to get the dirtiest Emma Frost and Venom combo
The Emma Frost Make It Rain emote has already gone viral before its May 30 release date. If you haven’t seen it yet, it shows the White Queen standing confidently while showering dollar bills in all directions. And in a game already known for exotic cosmetics and meme-worthy emotes, this one fits like a designer glove.

— Logan Bates (@SlickSpicy1227) May 24, 2025
Before you ask, yes, it’s completely free. As part of the Combat Chest mini-pass for Season 2.5, you’ll be able to unlock this emote simply by progressing through the reward tiers without spending a dime. All you have to do is grind a bit of XP, and Emma Frost will soon be making it rain across Marvel Rivals. But there’s something else that we need to see.
The emote will undoubtedly be spammed across Doom matches, especially by players pairing it with the now-legendary Venom twerk. Of course, Venom’s twerk emote is no stranger to attention. Released in early April during the Galacta’s Cosmic Adventure event, Venom’s Symbiote Boogie twerk emote is also the exact type of ridiculousness and carnage that we love.
The visual pairing of Emma Frost making it rain and Venom’s twerk is something we’re already thinking about. “Venom twerk emote, dagger slapping, Emma making it rain while Luna DJ’s is about to be a messssss,” one user joked. Another user said, “Time to do this in a Doom match with Venom.” You can always expect the Marvel Rivals community to cook up the craziest stuff.
Season 2.5 is going to have a lot of content for us
Ultron is coming very soon. | Image Credit: NetEase Games
This new emote is part of the Season 2.5 Combat Chest, a limited-time mini-battle pass that will feature new skins, emotes, sprays, and collectibles. Aside from Emma’s new emote, the Combat Chest includes rewards like Storm’s Ultimate Wind-Rider outfit and Magneto’s Binary Sword set. Of course, like all passes, it will have a paid and free tier. Luckily for us, the emote is free.
Beyond cosmetics, Season 2.5 is also bringing in big changes in the gameplay side of things with Ultron joining the list of playable characters. As the game’s newest Strategist character, he will bring some much-needed support to the support class. There will also be six new Team-Up combos for us to try.
If there’s one thing that these emotes and cosmetics tell us, it’s that these emotes prove that NetEase understands its audience. It doesn’t matter if you’re in it for the competition or the sheer chaos of Venom twerking while Emma Frost makes it rain; the developers know what they’re doing.

‘Please use caution when exploring our natural areas’
‘Please use caution when exploring our natural areas’
The last thing you’d expect to see in a state like Texas is a mountain lion, likely due to the Lone Star State’s general lack of mountains or hilly regions.
A worker for the San Marcos city trail crew at the Purgatory Creek Natural Area in Hays County, Texas, was out on the trail on a regular Thursday morning when they happened to catch a glimpse of a mountain lion climbing down from a tree and scurrying off when it noticed them, per Phys.org.
A completely normal sight, indeed.
According to city officials, the timing of the sighting coincides with reports of dead animals, such as deer, suggesting the two events “may be related.”
Mountain lions (also known as cougars) were once native to much of Texas but were largely eradicated through hunting and human development.
However, they’ve been spotted most commonly in West Texas, specifically the Trans-Pecos region. This marked the first time a mountain lion had been confirmed in Hays County, which is closer to the central part of the state.
Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City?
“As always, please use caution when exploring our natural areas. These greenspaces are home to many types of wildlife,” San Marcos officials said in a statement.
“If you encounter a mountain lion: Do not approach it. Give it space and a way to escape — most will avoid confrontation,” they added — an important warning when encountering any animal in the wild.
This could be a sign that cougars are starting to return to the state, which is a big win for animal conservation efforts. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a species once native to a particular region start to bounce back recently. One example is gray wolves being spotted in California early last year.
A rare wild cat was also spotted in the Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand, India, indicating that conservation efforts are not just finding success in the U.S.

Grab All 10 Legend of Zelda Manga Volumes For $5 Each With This Box Set Deal
Grab All 10 Legend of Zelda Manga Volumes For $5 Each With This Box Set Deal
Zelda fans can save big on the awesome official manga adaptations of some of Link’s most memorable adventures. Amazon has The Legend of Zelda Manga Box Set discounted to only $50.86 (was $105), which is one of the best prices we’ve seen all year for this 10-volume, nearly 2,000-page set. Alternatively, you can spend about $20 more to get the fancy collectible version of the manga. The Legendary Edition Box Set is up for grabs for $72 (was $125). This set includes all five of the premium Legendary Editions, each of which compiles two volumes of the manga, and an awesome display case based on the treasure chests Link finds in the game series.
$72 (was $125)
As mentioned, the original Zelda manga received 10 volumes throughout its run. Each Legendary Edition book contains two volumes in one. The manga puts its own spin on six games in Nintendo’s iconic series, including Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Oracle of Ages/Seasons, The Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, and Four Swords.
All told, the Legendary Edition spans 1,910 pages across the five books. These deluxe editions offer noticeable improvements compared to the standard trade paperback editions of the original Zelda manga. All five books have exclusive covers and a few full-color art pieces. The build quality and presentation is noticeably better thanks to the use of higher-quality paper, thicker covers, and more durable bindings.
All five Legendary Editions are also sold on their own for $20 each. Prices tend to move on the individual volumes, but right now each book is priced between $12 and $18. If you bought all five Legendary Editions, you’d spend $76 instead of $72. That said, you’d miss out on the exclusive poster and treasure chest display/storage box.
$50.86 (was $105)
If you simply want to read and own the complete Legend of Zelda manga series, the standard edition collection has the same stories presented in a more budget-friendly package. You’ll get 1,968 pages of Link’s adventures spread across 10 trade paperback volumes. With the more than 50% discount attached, you’re only paying about five bucks per book, which is a really awesome deal.
The paperback box set comes with a slipcase and a foldout poster. Each volume is also sold separately with a retail price of $12. You can save a couple bucks on many of them, but even with these discounts, all 10 volumes would cost you just north of $100 when bought individually.
The Legend of Zelda Manga – Legendary Editions
The original 10-volume Zelda manga and the follow-up series set in the worlds of Twilight Princess were written and illustrated by Akira Himekawa, the pen name for the mangaka duo who work under the aliases of A. Honda and S. Nagano. The 2,040-page Twilight Princess Complete Manga Box Set released last fall. Fans can get the 11-volume collection for $88 (was $130) at Amazon.
All three Zelda Manga Box Sets:
The reimagining of Twilight Princess is darker and more complex than the original series. The first series is suitable for elementary and middle school readers, whereas Twilight Princess is more of a young adult series. This isn’t all that surprising considering Twilight Princess is the only mainline entry in the game series to receive a T for Teen rating from the ESRB.
Zelda fans should also check out the official graphic novel adaptation of A Link to the Past. This adaptation originally ran in Nintendo Power magazine in the early ’90s and offers a wildly different interpretation of the SNES classic.
For more Zelda reading material, including Dark Horse’s series of lore, history, and art books, check out our Legend of Zelda books roundup for a look at every official book based on the iconic franchise that’s in print today.
And if you’re interested in reading more comic books and manga based on Nintendo franchises, several other notable franchises have received print adaptations over the years. Super Mario Adventures, a collection of comics that also originally appeared in Nintendo Power, is on ***** for only $9.47 (was $17) at Amazon. Sadly, only a small chunk of the long-running Mario manga, Super Mario-kun, has been translated to English. Super Mario Manga Mania, which is essentially a sampler platter of the manga, is available for $10.81 (was $12) at Amazon.
Naturally, Pokemon is the Nintendo franchise with the largest library of manga thanks to the long-running Pokemon Adventures series, but other popular IPs such as Animal Crossing, Kirby, and Splatoon have also been adapted into long-running series:

Europe adjusts itself to Trump tariffs
Europe adjusts itself to Trump tariffs

French President Emmanuel Macron visiting Vietnam and Swedish automaker Volvo Cars laying off employees might not appear to have much in common.
But they are, on some level, strategic maneuvers in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s deployment of 50% tariffs on the European Union, which he later delayed.
Macron sealed a deal with Vietnam for the Asian country to buy 20 jets from European planemaker Airbus, building on an earlier agreement for a similar quantity.
And Volvo Cars’ layoffs reflected growing pressure on the company to cut costs. The Swedish automaker has already pulled a China-made car completely out of the U.S. markets because of Trump’s tariffs on Beijing. The company, which is owned by China’s Geely Holding, also withdrew its financial guidance for both 2025 and 2026, citing tariff pressure on the automotive sector.
Hence, while there may be sighs of relief in Brussels for now, Trump’s tariff bluster will continue to roil the global economy and investor confidence.
What you need to know today
Hong-Kong listed bubble tea shares popU.S. futures jumped Monday night stateside on Trump’s delay of 50% tariffs on the European Union. Markets were closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. Asia-Pacific markets mostly traded down Tuesday. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dipped 0.05% at 2 p.m. Singapore time. Hong Kong-listed shares of ******** bubble tea companies popped, with Mixue jumped 8%, Guming rose 6.3% and Nayuki climbed 5.5%.
Rocky path ahead despite EU tariff delayInvestors cheered Trump’s delay of tariffs on the EU, driving U.S. futures and European markets higher. However, analysts are warning not to let optimism run unchecked. Berenberg Chief Economist Holger Schmieding told CNBC that even if a deal was struck to reduce import duties from the EU to 20% or 30%, “the EU would have no choice” but to impose “significant countermeasures” against the United States.
Consecutive growth for China’s industrial profitsChina’s industrial profits rose 3% in April, official data showed Tuesday, accelerating from 2.6% growth in March. That marks the second straight month that profits at major industrial firms have increased. The boost in industrial firms’ profits was largely owed to Beijing’s efforts at supporting the private sector, offsetting some of negative impacts from U.S. tariffs on the country.
Vietnam agrees to buy 20 Airbus jetsDuring French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam — the first by a French president in almost 10 years — the two countries signed an agreement to buy 20 Airbus A330neo planes, vaccines from French pharmaceutical company Sanofi and cooperate on nuclear energy, reported Reuters, citing a list of documents it had seen.
Volvo announces layoffsSweden-based automaker Volvo Cars on Monday said it would cut around 3,000 jobs, mostly office-based positions in Sweden, as part of a major cost-cutting drive. The move comes after the company, which is owned by China’s Geely Holding, announced an 18 billion Swedish kronor ($1.89 billion) cost and cash action plan late last month.

Known as “The Reserve,” the storage facility features scores of private vaults and a towering storage chamber lined with thousands of safe deposit boxes reaching three stories high.
From the start of the year to April, the precious metals repository has received an 88% increase in orders to store gold and silver in the vault from the same ******* in 2024, said its founder, Gregor Gregersen.
“The idea of putting physical metal in a safe jurisdiction like Singapore with parties they can trust is becoming a big trend nowadays,” he said, adding that 90% of the new orders are coming from outside of Singapore.

India’s ex-wrestling chief cleared in minor’s ******* harassment case
India’s ex-wrestling chief cleared in minor’s ******* harassment case
The former head of India’s wrestling federation has been cleared in a ******* harassment case filed by a minor female wrestler.
A court in the capital, Delhi, accepted a Delhi police report, recommending the cancellation of the case against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
A former MP from the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Singh still faces charges of ******* harassment and stalking in a separate case by six adult female wrestlers.
Singh has always denied these charges.
The cases against Singh made headlines in 2023 when he was charged with ******* harassment after months of protests by India’s top wrestlers.
The protests made headlines globally, especially after the police detained them as they tried to march to India’s new parliament building in Delhi.
Footage of the Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia and two-time world champion medallist Vinesh Phogat being dragged in the streets and carried off in police vans went viral, sparking criticism from top athletes and opposition politicians.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also condemned the way the wrestlers were being treated and called for an impartial inquiry into their complaints.
The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was criticised for not acting strongly or swiftly enough against Singh since he was a member of his party. The government had rejected the allegations.
The wrestlers agreed to pause their protests after meeting Home Minister Amit Shah and then Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.
Thakur assured them that charges would be filed against Singh by 15 June 2023.
Seven female wrestlers, including the minor, registered complaints with the police accusing Singh of molesting and groping them at training camps and tournaments.
In the case of the minor, police had invoked the stringent Protection of Children from ******* Offences (Pocso) Act.
Singh, denied all the allegations, accusing the wrestlers of being “politically motivated”.
Weeks later, the minor retracted her earlier statements and withdrew her allegations, reports said. Wrestler Sakshi Malik told the BBC at the time that she believed “the player was pressurised into withdrawing the charges”. Mr Singh refused to comment on the allegation, saying “let law take its course”.
On Monday, legal news site Bar and Bench reported that the police had given a report in court seeking cancellation of the case as the minor wrestler’s father said he had made a false complaint.
The prosecution lawyer said “no corroborative evidence” had been found in the allegations after a detailed investigation in the case.
Bar and Bench said the wrestler and her father had appeared before the court and expressed satisfaction with the police investigation. They also did not oppose the cancellation report.

Greenwood Kingsley Super Deli: Teen who allegedly brandished sword at worker while on bail faces 41 charges
A teenage boy charged over a terrifying armed hold-up at a Greenwood deli was already on bail accused of home burglary and possessing edged weapons.
It is understood the 14-year-old boy, who allegedly brandished a sword at an innocent shopworker inside the Greenwood Kingsley Super Deli on Cockman Road about 7.45pm on Friday, is facing a total of 41 charges.
The boy was already facing multiple counts of aggravated home burglary, carrying an edged weapon, stealing and trespass before he allegedly robbed the deli. He has pleaded not guilty to some of the offences.
The details of his previous alleged offending were not heard in the Perth Children’s Court on Tuesday.
A neurodevelopmental report was ordered ahead of his next appearance on July 8.

No application for bail was made and he will remain behind bars until then.
Another alleged teen accomplice has also been charged with aggravated armed robbery over the Greenwood incident.
CCTV shows one of the males holding up the blade — almost half the size of his body — centimetres from the terrified staff member, who was standing behind the till making a coffee.
His alleged accomplice was waiting outside on their getaway vehicle — an e-scooter.

They both allegedly fled with the cash before they were arrested by police at a home less then 2km away.
The second boy charged — who is about to turn 15 — was described as a child who did not have a troubled past.
He is facing an aggravated armed robbery charge. He also did not apply for bail on Tuesday. He will next appear in court on June 10.
After the incident, shop owner Billy Tran said his colleague handed over “all the cash” available to her as she stood centimetres away from the blade.
“She of course was nervous, very nervous, I feel sorry for her,” he said.

New Zealand teenager dies after tackle game linked to viral Run It Straight challenge
New Zealand teenager dies after tackle game linked to viral Run It Straight challenge
A New Zealand teenager has died after playing a tackling game, believed to have been inspired by a controversial new high impact collision sport trending on social media.
Police confirmed the 19-year-old died in hospital on Monday night after he suffered a critical head injury while playing a tackle game with friends in the North Island city Palmerston North on Sunday.
“This young man’s death is an absolute tragedy and my thoughts are with his family and friends,” Inspector Ross Grantham said.
“The tackle game … was based on a social media-driven trend, where participants compete in full-contact collisions without protective gear,” he said.
Media reports inside New Zealand linked the game to the Run It Straight challenge. The challenge has been gaining traction on social media over recent weeks, with videos on TikTok and Instagram of mostly men running at full-speed into one another clocking up tens of millions of views.
“While this was an impromptu game among friends, not a planned event, this tragic outcome does highlight the inherent safety concerns with such an activity,” Grantham said.
The tragedy follows a championship Run It Straight event hosted in Auckland last week, which resulted in two men retiring due to head injuries. One of the men appeared to have a seizure, RNZ reported.
The event’s organisers, RUNIT promotes the sport on its website as “the world’s fiercest new collision sport” which rewards “strength and grit”.
More than 1000 people turned up to watch eight men compete for $20,000 prize money, with the winners heading to a final competition next month, to compete for $250,000.
In a statement to the Guardian, RUNIT said the teenager’s death was tragic.
“Any contact sport like boxing, martial arts or combat-style activities should only be held in highly controlled environments, which include professional medical supervision and support,” it said.
It said its events screen participants, have strict guidelines around how and where to tackle, conduct medical assessments before and after the competition and have medical staff on hand.
“We do not encourage any copying of the sport as it should only be done under the strict conditions”.
Melanie Bussey, a professor in the school of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences at University of Otago said Run It-style tackles can increase the likelihood of serious brain trauma.
Sports associations and governing bodies were working hard to improve the ******** of players and reduce preventable injuries, and the introduction of a high-risk sport seem “not only counterproductive but deeply concerning”, she said.
Patria Hume, a Human Performance professor at AUT warned the public about the risk of injury and death from playing the sport.
“[The] death was preventable,” she said. “We need people to stop participating in activities where the intention is to hurt someone.”

Tariffs mark the latest blow for already struggling diamond sector
Tariffs mark the latest blow for already struggling diamond sector

They might be made of the hardest material on earth, but diamonds, with their complex supply chains and expensive price tag, are particularly fragile to U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff agenda.
The precious mineral is facing a baseline 10% import duty to the U.S. — a market accounting for over half of the global demand for polished diamonds. The sector is also bracing for additional duties should Trump’s 90-day pause come to an end with no new agreements.
“It’s very clear that the diamond industry, on a global level, has been facing a perfect storm of challenges,” Karen Rentmeesters, chief executive of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre told CNBC, adding that tariffs are just “the latest blow.”
The small precious stones often cross several borders before ending in a store. From mines in Botswana or South Africa, to trading hubs in the Middle East or Europe, and then on to cutting and polishing hubs, before heading back to a jewelry manufacturer — there is often a long journey before the item arrives in a store. This complex supply chain means the diamond industry is highly susceptible to any trade disruptions.
Raw materials such as gold and copper have been excluded from U.S. tariffs and the industry is pushing for diamonds to also be excluded.
Rentmeesters who heads the 580-year-old corporation which represents over 1,400 companies within Antwerp’s diamond district, said: “You could argue that loose diamonds are a raw material. You don’t walk around with a polished diamond in your hand. You’re wearing it in a piece of jewelry. It’s in a ring or a pair of earrings.”
The tariff uncertainty comes at a time when the luxury industry at large is already contending with a slowdown in demand after a post-pandemic ***** and an economic slump in China.
Lab-grown diamonds mark an ongoing shift
However, the biggest disruption to the industry has been the creation of lab-grown diamonds (LGD). Chemically identical, the stones are impossible to distinguish with the naked eye. They are selling at an 80% discount to the natural version and customers are taking advantage of the cheaper prices.
Over half of couples surveyed in the U.S. last year, said their engagement ring featured a lab-grown diamond, according to the 2025 Real Weddings study by The Knot which included insights from nearly 17,000 couples.
A watershed moment was in 2021 when Pandora, the world’s largest jewelry brand by volume, became the first to stop selling mined diamonds.
“In the US, some 18 months ago, the volume of lab-grown diamonds in loose stones surpassed that of mined. So if there’s any doubt in people’s minds that there’s a shift going on, it was very visible from there, and since then, it keeps on growing,” Pandora CEO Alexander Lacik told CNBC.
“With this type of value proposition that lab grown diamonds can offer, we can actually offer diamonds to more people. So it’s not necessarily that we see that the total volume of diamonds is going to go down. We’ll probably invite more people into the category.”
With the poor macroeconomic conditions and increasing competition from LGD, the price of mined diamonds has fallen nearly 60% since a peak in March 2022.
Tariffs threaten stabilization point
However, some analysts say the industry is close to reaching a point of stabilization between LGD and mined diamonds. “The question you have to ask is, how much lower can prices go before consumers see clear differentiation between the two products,” said Paul Zimnisky, an independent diamond analyst.
He added: “And I think we’re finally starting to get to that point where you could buy, you know, a three, four or five carat, which are ridiculous sizes for an engagement ring — you could buy the lab grown version for, you know, just a few $1,000 whereas the natural version is going to be tens of hundreds of thousands of dollars. So, I think that price differential is certainly creating distinction.”
In the face of these challenges, some key players are rethinking their strategies.
De Beers, a major player in the diamond industry, said there were signs of an uptake in U.S. demand before Christmas and before the tariff uncertainty hit. Instead of investing in the burgeoning market of LGD, DeBeers is doubling down on natural diamonds.
De Beers recently announced it will close its LGD jewelry brand Lightbox in a bid to reinforce “its commitment to natural diamonds in the jewelry sector.”
“The persistently declining value of lab-grown diamonds in jewelry underscores the growing differentiation between these factory-made products and natural diamonds,” De Beers CEO Al Cook said in a company statement.
This photograph taken on February 6, 2024 shows employees working at Greenlab Diamonds, a firm manufacturing lab-grown gems on the outskirts of Surat. Man-made gems are reshaping the $89 billion global diamond jewellery market, especially in the west Indian city of Surat where 90 percent of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished. Lab-grown diamond exports from India tripled in value between 2019 and 2022, while export volumes rose by 25 percent between April and October 2023, up from 15 percent in the same ******* a year earlier, according to the latest industry data. The firm said the closure is aligned with the strategy it presented in May last year, “to focus on high-return activities and streamline the business.”
The closure also comes at a time when Anglo American, De Beers’ parent company, is divesting the company and is in the process of looking for potential buyers.
In the current luxury slowdown jewelry has been a notable bright spot, especially the high-jewelry segment, seen as less cyclical catering to the most affluent clientele.
Earlier this month, Richemont, beat expectations with revenues boosted by double-digit growth at the group’s Jewellery Maisons division, which includes Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Buccellati.
According to analysts, the key for the mined industry going forward is in the messaging: “You have to remember a diamond, it’s a very emotional purchase. It’s not a practical purchase. And people like the story behind the creation,” Zimnisky said.
“I just think it’s up to the industry to provide consumers with the confidence they need if they’re going to spend significantly more for a natural diamond, they want to make sure it’s definitely a natural diamond. I think that should be the industry’s priority at this point.”

New Zealand teen dies in viral rugby-style tackle game
New Zealand teen dies in viral rugby-style tackle game
A 19-year-old New Zealander has died of a “serious head injury” sustained in a social media-inspired game of tackle with friends, police said.
The young man, identified in local media as Ryan Satterthwaite, died in hospital on Monday after a game of “run it straight” in the city of Palmerston North.
Meant to recreate collisions seen in rugby, the game has two players – one with a ball, the other the tackler – charge at full speed to knock each other down without protective gear.
“We would urge anyone thinking about taking part in a game or event like this to consider the significant safety and injury risks,” police spokesperson Ross Grantham said in a statement on Tuesday.
“While this was an impromptu game among friends, not a planned event, this tragic outcome does highlight the inherent safety concerns with such an activity.”
He added that it was not a police matter, but officers would “continue to undertake enquiries on behalf of the coroner”.
“Run it straight” has long been played casually in Australia and New Zealand, but has recently taken off as a trend online and been endorsed by some professional rugby players, despite critics warnings it could give players head trauma and brain injury.
On social media, “run it straight” challenges show young men and students charging at each other as their friends watch on. In some videos, participants are seen passing out after being hit.
As the popularity of the game grew, some have started to hold their own tournaments – though it is unclear how these are regulated.
One such tournament, the Runit Championship League, made its debut in Auckland this month after first being held in Australia in March.
On its website, organisers described the game as the “fiercest, new collision sport”.
The league drew more than 1,000 people to the Auckland’s Trusts Arena as men went head-to-head for a prize of around $13,000 (£9,500).
Some participants were injured during their matches, and one video showed a man appearing to have a seizure after colliding with his rival.
But Runit Championship League organisers have promised to return to next month with an even ******* prize.
Kimami Ngaluafe, the organiser of Up the Guts NZ, another “run it straight” event in New Zealand, tells says the game has long been popular in the country, attracting five-year-old boys to men in their 40s.
“It’s a Kiwi national backyard sport. The boys are currently playing as we speak,” he tells the BBC.
But Satterthwaite’s death is a reminder of how important safety is, Mr Ngaluafe says. He adds that players should wear protective headgear – which many currently do not – and have spotters around to prevent their heads from hitting the ground.
“In New Zealand, kids are playing this kind of game every day. They deserve to be guided properly and shown how to do it the right way,” he says.

‘We have listened’: Revised workers compensation reform in NSW passes milestone, challenges remain
‘We have listened’: Revised workers compensation reform in NSW passes milestone, challenges remain
Controversial reforms to workers compensation in NSW which brought unions to the steps of Parliament House have passed the first major milestone.
A revised version of the proposed plan to reform workers compensation was introduced to parliament on Tuesday by Industrial Relations Minister Sophie Cotsis.
The initial proposal faced fierce backlash when it was unveiled earlier this month from unions and industry groups who slammed many of its provisions, including a 31 per cent threshold for damages for permanent impairment from psychological injury.

A requirement that someone seeking damages from psychological injury due to ******* or racial harassment or bullying require a court or tribunal finding was removed.
The Minns state government hopes the proposal will instil a “culture of prevention” in the workers compensation scheme, while also securing it financially for years to come.
Treasurer Daniel Moohkey told an inquiry into the proposal earlier this month he would no longer be authorising payments to the Treasury managed Fund, the state’s self-insurer, into which billions of dollars had been poured by successive governments.
Introducing the Bill, Ms Cotsis said that until now “psychological injury has been left largely undefined in the Workers Compensation Act”.
“The Bill introduces new definitions for psychological injuries to make sure workers and employers have certainty on what the scheme protects,” she said.
“Clear definitions will mean less time spent on disputes and more time on prevention.”
Ms Cotsis revealed the government would establish a tripartite review – which had been pushed for by Unions NSW – to review and monitor the changes and “to help guard against unintended consequences”.
“The review will be run by a panel of experts, with at least one expert recommended from Unions NSW, Business NSW and the NSW government,” who will also determine its terms of reference, Ms Cotsis said.

Ms Cotsis outlined the changes to the Bill parliament on Tuesday.
“The relevant event that caused the injury must have a real and direct connection with employment,” she said.
“Real and direct connection does not necessarily mean the relevant event has to occur in the physical workplace.
“New evidentiary requirements will support insurers to make objective and timely decisions in relation to claims.
“Relevant events include, but are not limited to, bullying, ******* harassment and indictable criminal conduct, including threats of violence and assault.”
Ms Cotsis said the intent was to target workers compensation toward events and behaviours, and preserved “in no uncertain times” compensation for PTSD caused by trauma or exposure to traumatic events.
She defended the “objective test” for bullying, excessive work demands, and racial or ******* harassment claims as “reducing the reliance on the worker’s perception”, and said the Bill would provide employers with certainty around what is acceptable in the workplace.
“Interpersonal conflict and work stress are typical and reasonably expected to occur on almost a daily basis in all modern workplace,” she said.
“In contrast, bullying, excessive work demands, racial harassment or ******* harassment unacceptable in any workplace and should never be expected.
“The Bill amends the employer defences to psychological injury claims that were the result of reasonable management action.”

Psychological claims for bullying or harassment would also be expedited under the Bill, including if there is a dispute to the claim.
Addressing concerns about the 31 per cent WPI threshold, Ms Cotsis said “we are listening” and that there would be a “stepped transition”.
The Bill will not apply to coal miners or frontline service workers, including police and paramedics, save for a few of the amendments.
Unions pushback against workers compensation reform
Unions NSW and a range of other unions, including the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association and the NSW Teachers Federation, rallied outside of parliament on Monday morning in opposition to the reforms, which they said was being rushed through.
Industry groups, including in the legal and sports physiotherapy sectors, as well as activist groups have also voiced opposition to the Bill, with Australians for Mental Health on Tuesday pleading with the government to “slow down” the proposed reforms.
“We welcome the revisions the government has made. It shows our policymakers are listening, but still requiring someone to be so unwell that they can barely function before receiving the long-term support they need is alarming,” chief executive Chris Gambian said.
“We agree the current workers compensation system is unsustainable, but overhauling it so quickly could take away vital support for the likes of first responders, teachers, nurses and social workers; people who are exposed to traumatic experiences every day.”
At the same time, the NSW government will also propose sweeping changes to workplace health and safety.
Camera IconNSW Premier Chris Minns has faced months of union-driven work action. NewsWire / Nikki Short Credit: News Corp Australia
Among the proposed changes are plans to empower the NSW Industrial Relations Commission to issue “stop-bullying” orders as well as the Tribunal’s ability to resolve industrial disputes, give new powers and manpower to SafeWork NSW – in particular, around compliance – and codify workplace accountability and codes of practise.
The changes come after an $344m package from the state government and were welcomed by Ms Cotsis as a way to “further strength the Industrial Relations Commission’s ability to resolve disputes and to now resolve issues arising from Work Health and Safety legislation.
“It proposes major reform particularly around gender equality. The elimination of workplace bullying and ******* harassment are new key objectives of the IR Act.
“Workplace bullying causes serious harm to worker health and organisations. According to the Productivity Commission, bullying is estimated to cost up to $36bn annually in Australia.
“The amendments establish a ‘one-stop shop’ for handling complaints through the IRC and enhance its powers to resolve disputes and support injured workers’ return to work.
“This legislation follows the passing of laws in 2023 which restored the independent industrial umpire, creating the structure needed to deliver meaningful improvements to the working lives of hundreds and thousands of workers in the state.”

‘His immaturity is still the same’: Cameron Munster remains one of the game’s great larrikins, but his leadership has gone to new heights
‘His immaturity is still the same’: Cameron Munster remains one of the game’s great larrikins, but his leadership has gone to new heights
A lot has been made about the Blues welcoming back champion playmaker Nathan Cleary, but the Maroons also get back one of the world’s best five-eighths with a more mature Cameron Munster tipped to shine after missing the 2024 Origin campaign.
Munster was sidelined for the entire series due to a crippling groin injury, but he’s fully fit and ready to show why he’s considered one of the best big-game players of the modern era.
A larrikin off the field known for his sharp one-liners, Munster has stepped up as a leader and matured as a man with his young family.
He is still responsible for providing the laughs in camp, but Queensland coach Billy Slater is calling on his former teammate to lead from the front as the Maroons look to win back the Origin shield.
Camera IconCameron Munster has emerged as a true leader despite remaining the funny man in camp. Lachie Millard Credit: News Corp Australia
“His immaturity is still the same, but he’s certainly become a leader,” he said.
“He’s very professional – it’s hard to believe – but he’s a very professional person who cares about his footy, and he has a real influence on everyone around him.
“It’s great to have him back. He’s been a wonderful player for a long time.
“He’s a really infectious person. On the field, we know what type of player he is, and he has so much influence over how we play.
“But at the same time, off the field he’s such a great character. Everyone has a smile on their face when they’re around Cameron Munster.
“Whether he’s saying something good or something silly, it’s irrelevant. He brings the mood to that even playing field.”
Munster is a key addition for a Maroons side that piled on the points against a 12-man Blues team in last year’s series opener, only to lose game two by 20 points before they managed just two penalty goals in the decider at home.
Kalyn Ponga will provide plenty of spark at the back, while the hosts also get some key forwards back, but Slater insists a few key names on the team sheet won’t make a difference if the team doesn’t nail the little things.
“It won’t just ignite, it won’t just happen. We have to make it happen,” he replied when asked if the attack would fire with a few key inclusions.
“A few tries would be nice, wouldn’t it? We’ve worked on a balanced preparation through the last 10 days, and hopefully that will show on the field.
“You can’t just get one part of your game – you need to get your whole game right – and hopefully that’s what we’re focused on.”

This California city is taking a ‘zero-tolerance’ approach to ******** street vendors
The Brief
Huntington Beach police and code enforcement are enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against ******** sidewalk vending.
A valid city permit is required for all vendors, and unpermitted selling can result in fines up to $1,000.
Vending is strictly prohibited on the beach, pier, and surrounding beach areas, even with a permit.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The City of Huntington Beach is cracking down on ******** street and sidewalk vending on its beaches and other public spaces by adopting a “zero-tolerance” approach.
Here’s what you need to know.
What we know
According to authorities, street vendors are barred from selling everything – including cut fruit and drinks to beach chairs and other merchandise – without a permit in popular areas.
These areas include the beach, Pier Plaza, Pier, beach parking lot, beach service road, Pacific Coast Highway, and downtown Huntington Beach, especially in areas designated for permitted events. You can see a full list of prohibited areas here.

SUGGESTED: Pregnant food cart vendor shoved to ground by Simi Valley resident
Even people with sidewalk vendor permits are not allowed, police said.
“Vendors cannot provide or sell any service to any person, including the renting of merchandise to customers,” police wrote in a statement on their Facebook page.
The backstory
The heightened enforcement is part of the city’s effort to maintain safety and order along the coastline and in public areas.
SUGGESTED: Oxnard taco stand worker severely injured after Metrolink train, big rig collide
In 2018, California decriminalized sidewalk vending with the passing of the Safe Sidewalk Vending Act. However, local jurisdictions retain the final say on street vending regulations.
What’s next
According to the city, Code Enforcement officers will begin patrols in June in the aforementioned areas.
SUGGESTED: Long Beach offers free food carts for eligible vendors
Fines of up to $1,000 will be issued to offenders, but the city said officers will first “educate and ask for voluntary cooperation before issuing citations.”

Bruce Springsteen speaks out on North East miners’ strike support
Bruce Springsteen speaks out on North East miners’ strike support
Peter Harris

Bruce Springsteen said he had been following news coverage about the strike
Rock legend Bruce Springsteen has spoken for the first time about his decision to donate thousands of dollars to the families of striking miners.
The singer invited women from support groups backstage at a concert at St James’ Park in Newcastle in 1985.
This was when mining communities in the North East were trying to recover from the bitter year-long dispute, and he handed over a cheque for $20,000.
Speaking in a forthcoming BBC documentary, Springsteen said he had followed news coverage of the strike in the months before the concert.
Springsteen, nicknamed The Boss, said: “My parents were working class people and I watched them struggle their whole lives.
“I’d been reading about it (the strike) in the newspapers and so it was just something that felt it would be a good thing to do.
“It wasn’t a big thing, it was just a good thing to do at the time.”
‘Hero to us’
The cheque was handed to Anne Suddick, from Northumberland, who was at the concert with her friend Juliana Heron.
Both had been running support groups during the strike.
The cheque was made out to the Northumberland and Durham Miners’ Support Group
Mrs Heron said a man had tapped her friend on the shoulder and asked her if she could “please come and meet Bruce Springsteen”.
“She was about half an hour and she comes back and she says, ‘You’ll never believe this’,” she said.
“She just hands us this cheque and said, ‘Look’.
“I said, ‘That says $20,000’, and she said, ‘Yes, it’s for the Northumberland and Durham Miners’ Support Group’.
“And I said, ‘But he doesn’t know us’, and she said, ‘Yes, but he knows what we do’.”
Mrs Heron described Springsteen as “a hero to us”.
“He didn’t do it for publicity,” she said. “He did it because he wanted to do it.”
The story features in a documentary, When Bruce Springsteen Came to Britain, to be shown on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer at 21:30 BST on 31 May.
