‘Instead of crippling China’s semiconductor ambitions, U.S. sanctions may be inadvertently accelerating them’: Report claims Washington measures could be bolstering China’s chip market
A new report claims that U.S. sanctions and restrictions placed on the semiconductor market to stifle China’s growth may actually be fueling a rise in China’s own semiconductor industry, building a more resilient ecosystem, and inadvertently accelerating China’s ambitions in the market.
As reported by Digitimes, although the U.S. and China have agreed on a 90-day trade agreement to suspend the harshest tariffs between the two nations, “tensions in the semiconductor sector are escalating.”
Digitimes says the rising temperature has put Taiwan’s IC substrate manufacturers operating in China under renewed scrutiny, revealing some doubt about the efficacy of U.S. Sanctions.

As noted by the report, Taiwan’s substrate supply chain delivered unexpectedly strong results in Q1 2025. According to Digitimes, a “stark difference” in positioning of companies in Taiwan versus China reveals the possibility that “China’s semiconductor ecosystem may be accelerating its rise, even under U.S. restrictions.”
As the report notes, President Trump has jettisoned the Biden administration’s tiered chip diffusion rules in favor of a blanket ban on the global use of Huawei’s Ascend AI chips and measures to prevent the export of other AI chips to China, a move Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang branded “a failure.”
The report highlights the contrasting fortunes of Unimicron and Zhen Ding Technology. The former has reported depressed high-end capacity utilization at its China plants as a result of tightened chip restrictions. The world’s foremost IC substrate maker has seen a rebound in orders at its Taiwan facilities to offset the slump, but executives remain concerned that escalating sanctions could see a permanent reduction in high-margin business from China’s premium electronics sector.
Conversely, Zhen Ding – the case study behind the theory that sanctions are buoying China’s chip industry – is reportedly seeing strong momentum in China’s domestic markets. It reportedly credits its “China for China” strategy (prioritizing local production for local demand) as a key factor behind a 30% YoY revenue increase in its substrate division.
Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox.
According to Digitimes, continued increase in China demand could even see Zhen Ding leverage its Taiwan Kaohsiung AI park to meet demand needs, reversing the flow of the supply chain.
The upshot, according to industry observers cited in the report, is that this strong performance points to a “critical paradox,” namely, Digitimes says that “instead of crippling China’s semiconductor ambitions, U.S. sanctions may be inadvertently accelerating them,” with domestic demand and supply chain localization creating a resilient ecosystem that “that could emerge stronger in the face of adversity.”
The sentiment broadly reflects Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s comments on the ban on AI chip exports recently. As mentioned, he branded the measures a failure, and specifically noted that companies are turning to Nvidia’s ******** rivals to make up for the dearth in U.S.-developed chips like its H20, giving its competitors a leg up rather than stifling the industry.
Recently, a report claimed that Nvidia is planning to launch new Blackwell-based solutions for China towards the end of the year to supersede its banned H20.

Russia says Ukraine, backed by Europe, is trying to wreck peace talks
Russia says Ukraine, backed by Europe, is trying to wreck peace talks
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia’s defence ministry said on Tuesday that Ukraine, backed by certain European countries, had taken several ‘provocative steps’ aimed at derailing Moscow-initiated direct peace talks with Kyiv.
The first direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in over three years took place on May 16, but failed to produce a ceasefire agreement.
“At the initiative of the Russian Federation, direct Russian-Ukrainian dialogue on a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine has been resumed,” the ministry said.
“At the same time, the Kyiv regime, supported by certain European countries, has taken a number of provocative steps aimed at disrupting the negotiation process.”
According to the Russian ministry, since May 20, Ukraine has significantly increased drone and missile attacks on Russian territory, using Western-supplied munitions and targeting civilian areas.
Between the evening of May 20 and the morning of May 27, Russian air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 2,331 Ukrainian drones, including 1,465 outside the immediate conflict zone, the ministry said.
Ukraine has also reported a sharp escalation in Russian attacks on its territory, including a record barrage on Sunday night.
The intensification prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to comment that Russian President Vladimir Putin had “gone absolutely CRAZY,” while also threatening new sanctions.
Russia’s defence ministry on Tuesday said that its strikes were retaliatory, precise, and targeted solely at military facilities and enterprises within Ukraine’s military-industrial complex.

When leaders ignore cybersecurity rules, the whole system weakens
When leaders ignore cybersecurity rules, the whole system weakens
Weeks after the ‘Signalgate’ scandal broke, the problems exposed by White House officials using non-government encrypted messaging services are much larger than one app or one official. It is critical for leaders of any operation, public or private sector, to apply best security practices continuously.
No public statement has been made about improving security protocols. Instead, the public can see that leaders will not be held accountable.
A continuous series of mistakes means no process
US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz made the first mistake of adding the journalist who had no need to know what was being discussed in the unsecured Signal chat.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth made the second mistake of posting classified information without obtaining verification the journalist was authorised and had a need to know the classified information.
Everyone else in the chat, including Cabinet-level officials such as Vice President JD Vance, made the third and continued mistakes of doing nothing until after the initial story broke.
The US and its allies may just be lucky that their adversaries were not able to compromise the US military plans that week, but what was compromised was the trust American allies have with their national security counterparts.
This isn’t some random political embarrassment. It’s a case study in how security collapses when leadership treats basic rules as optional. If national security leaders won’t model discipline, how can anyone else in the system be expected to?
Processes and tools are not enough
As a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and COO supporting information security for multiple businesses, I’ve seen firsthand that encryption and published policies aren’t enough.
The Waltz-Hegseth leak, which is an affront to the entire security profession, didn’t happen because of poor technology. Signal is excellent when it is used properly. Secure communications platforms, like Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs), already exist inside the government. So how did this scandal happen? Secure practices rely on culture. And culture is set at the top. Waltz, Hegseth, and others prioritised convenience over responsibility. They believed the rules were there for other people.
The same risks exist in the private sector. In finance, healthcare, and defense industries, one executive ignoring protocol can compromise an entire organisation, especially if others believe protocol is optional.
Continuous security culture is an imperative
The lessons from the Signal scandal are clear:
• Use secure, authorised tools that go through continuous assessments conducted by trusted third-party security specialists.
• Never share classified information outside vetted networks, and ensure only those with a need to know are able to see such information.
• Escalate violations and apply breach consequences equally with no exceptions for title or rank.
• Work with and support leadership to implement security best practices across all operations, not only obvious revenue drivers.
• Train leaders and contributors alike to prioritise cybersecurity and refresh learnings continuously, not treat it as compliance paperwork.
Failures at the top don’t stay isolated. They erode standards across institutions and signal to adversaries that they can pursue organisations lacking the maturity required to deal with sensitive information. We’re entering a new paradigm where the threats will become fully automated and using AI, able to leverage social engineering attacks at a massive scale with little effort.
Security starts with leadership, not technology. When rules become optional for those in charge, the system is already compromised.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 is a detriment to handheld gaming PCs – and a recent SteamOS comparison highlights that
SteamOS outperforms Windows 11 on the Lenovo Legion Go S in several games, according to new benchmarks
Both models use the same hardware, with the only difference being the operating systems
It’s a highlight of why handheld PC gamers are contemplating a switch to SteamOS
Microsoft’s Windows 11 has arguably been less favorable for handheld gaming PC users than alternatives, considering its non-portable user experience across the board. While Valve’s SteamOS has triumphed in that department, a new comparison highlights a potential wider gap between the operating systems.
According to Dave2D‘s (on YouTube) Lenovo Legion Go S benchmarks, the Windows 11 version has worse performance in several games, compared to the recently launched SteamOS model, which has a performance uplift of up to 25% (specifically in Cyberpunk 2077).
Both devices utilize the same hardware, with AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Go (or Z1 Extreme, depending on the configuration), and the operating system being the only difference. Pictured below, The Witcher 3 performs at 76fps on SteamOS, while it only manages 66fps on Windows 11 on the Legion Go S.

While Windows 11’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 wins in the comparison, it’s only by 1fps compared to the SteamOS version that maintains 63fps. Other titles show a clear and major performance uplift using Valve’s beloved operating system; it further corroborates previous benchmarks I’ve made using Bazzite (essentially a SteamOS clone).
The advantage of using SteamOS may not come as a surprise, since Microsoft is yet to make a major attempt to improve the user experience for handheld gamers. It’s more than likely because the focus is on desktop PCs (which have bloatware and software that isn’t necessary for gaming).
However, there are also instances where the Linux-based OS outperforms Windows 11 on desktop gaming PCs (and it’s evident via EliteBossSlayer‘s Final Fantasy 7 benchmark on YouTube), so this also applies to all PC gamers on Windows 11.
Windows Was The Problem All Along – YouTube

Analysis: There are only a few things holding me back from switching to SteamOS on my desktop gaming PC…
I’ve already abandoned Windows 11 on my Asus ROG Ally in favor of Bazzite, and it’s a huge relief with a much better user experience. It’s made me consider doing the same for my desktop gaming PC, but there’s one main reason why I won’t just yet.

Discord is my main hub for gaming and streaming gameplay to friends, and it’s not as simple as I’d want it to be. Supposedly, custom versions like Vesktop on GitHub make streaming possible – but with frequent Discord updates, it would likely require constant workarounds and tinkering to keep it working.
It’s also worth noting that using mods for games won’t be as simple as it is with Windows 11, and some games using anti-cheat software can’t run on Linux. The easiest solution is to keep both operating systems on separate drives, but I have to admit it’d be easier to focus on one alone.
Besides that, there’s hardly any reason for me to stick with Windows 11 if I’m primarily using my system for gaming – and despite the aforementioned handicaps, I’m edging closer to making the switch…

‘Lies:’ A UWA professor accuses the WA Government of lying about the impact of industrial emissions on Aboriginal rock art
‘Lies:’ A UWA professor accuses the WA Government of lying about the impact of industrial emissions on Aboriginal rock art
The Western *********** government has been accused of lying in the summary of a report about the impact of industrial pollution on Aboriginal rock art in the Pilbara to support an extension to Woodside’s North West Shelf gas plant.
UWA professor of archaeology Benjamin Smith said he had blown the whistle on the summary of an 800 page report released by the WA government late last week examining the impact of industrial emissions on Murujuga rock art.
The Cook government has denied the allegation.
The report was produced by the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and scientists from Curtin University, which the professor claims were gagged from commenting on its findings.
Professor Smith has studied the impact of pollutants on rock art for the past six years and claims the WA government covered up evidence that industrial pollutants have degraded rock art and misrepresented findings in the report.
“This report contains very serious evidence that industrial emissions are currently damaging the rock art of Murujuga,” he said.

Professor Smith said experiments showed rocks at Murujuga were damaged by industrial pollutants at accelerating elevated porosity, which meant they looked liked Swiss cheese under a microscope, rather than hard, even surfaces.
He said the government tried to blame elevated porosity on a Dampier power plant that operated in the 1970s and 1980s that produced 4000 tonnes of pollution, but current emissions from industry were now five times higher.
“That means current emissions are five times more serious, we have five times the level of destruction of Murujuga rock art than we had in the 1970s and 80s, according to the Murujuga rock art report,” he said.
A state government spokesman denied the allegations saying the claims were offensive and factually incorrect.
The premier told media at a press conference the science has said that modern industrial developments do not have a long-term impact in terms of the quality of the rock art.
“There was one incident back in the 1970s associated with an old generation power plant, that is what people have pointed to as being the most damaging ******* during the age of the rock art.”

Professor Smith tore up a copy of the summary at a press conference telling media the document was a disgrace and not worth the paper it was written on.
“The minister cannot make a decision on the expansion of the North West Shelf on the basis of this propaganda document,” he said.
Woodside has operated the facility for 40 years and have environmental approval to operate the gas plant until 2030, but need government approval to extend operations beyond next decade.
The WA government approved Woodside’s expansion in December, but the project needs environmental approval from the federal government before it can continue past 2030.
Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt is due to make a decision by the end of the month on whether to grant Woodside an extension to continue operating the North West Shelf gas plant until 2070.

The North West Shelf is one of the world’s biggest producers of liquefied natural gas, environmentalists argue it is one of the biggest polluters of greenhouse gas emissions in the Southern Hemisphere.
WA Greens spokesman Sophie McNeil called on Minister Watt to delay making a decision on the North West Shelf extension in the wake of these “shocking revelations.”
“There is a clear discrepancy between the findings of the 800 page report and of the summary, which we know was written by department officials,” she said.
“We have serious concerns about the ability of the minister to make this decision in this short ******* of time, because that report is incredibly technical reading.”
Mr Watt declined to comment.

This is the No. 1 rule for becoming a millionaire in America
This is the No. 1 rule for becoming a millionaire in America
Fox Business
Moneywise and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue through links in the content below.
Many Americans dream of becoming a millionaire, and most think they’ll need to be one to retire comfortably. According to the 2024 Planning & Progress Study published by Northwestern Mutual, Americans believe they need $1.46 million to retire comfortably.
But the average amount adults saved was just $88,400 last year — $1.37 million lower than their retirement goal.
Almost 50% of Americans are not saving for retirement at all, according to Rachel Cruz, personal finance expert and co-host of The Ramsey Show.
In a recent Fox Business interview, Cruz said that, based on her experience, many are struggling to even find the margin to save for retirement. That’s why she says the first step is to find the margin in your budget.
While it may seem daunting, you don’t need to be a top executive, famous athlete or popular musician to make big bucks. The secret is much simpler — and perhaps more boring — than that. And failing to take advantage of this one money rule could impact your retirement greatly.
According to Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, “The number one thing to do on your road to becoming a millionaire is very simple: join your company’s 401(k) plan. Put as much money in there as you can early on, and make sure you do not touch it.”
Cruz recommends contributing to your 401(k) up to the match your company offers if it offers one. Matching can add significant contributions to your retirement savings over time. After maximizing your employer’s match, Cruz recommends contributing to programs such as a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k), which have tax-free withdrawals in retirement.
But you might be one of many Americans who don’t have access to a 401(k) through your employer. According to a recent study from AARP, around 56 million Americans work for employers that don’t offer any type of traditional retirement or pension plan.
Opening a self-directed retirement account like an individual retirement account (IRA) can help you in this case. The main benefit? You can grow your assets tax-free or defer paying tax until you retire.
Opting for a gold IRA gives you the opportunity to hedge against market volatility by allowing you to invest directly in physical precious metals rather than stocks and bonds.
Gold prices rose by over 26% in 2024, outperforming the S&P 500 index’s 23% returns. You can invest in this asset through Priority Gold, an industry leader in precious metals, offering physical delivery of gold and silver. Plus, they have an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and a 5-star rating from Trust Link.
If you’d like to convert an existing IRA into a gold IRA, Priority Gold offers 100% free rollover, as well as free shipping, and free storage for up to five years. Qualifying purchases will also receive up to $10,000 in free silver.
To learn more about how Priority Gold can help you reduce inflation’s impact on your nest egg, download their free 2025 gold investor bundle.
For many younger people, retirement seems a long way off — especially when they have more immediate needs for their money. But Cruz says you need to adopt a “long-term mindset.”
You can start putting 15% of your income into retirement, starting with a 401(k) if it’s available to you. She says it’s important to contribute to the plan consistently and avoid pulling any money out, even if the market is down.
After maxing out your 401(k) contributions, you can look for other ways to boost your wealth.
Another key step to building a sound financial footing is to take inventory of your goals. For instance, if you want to retire by the time you’re 50, you need to plan your finances and investments accordingly.
Consulting a financial advisor can help you there.
With Vanguard, you can connect with a personal advisor who can help assess how you’re doing so far and make sure you’ve got the right portfolio to meet your goals on time.
Vanguard’s hybrid advisory system combines advice from professional advisers and automated portfolio management to make sure your investments are working to achieve your financial goals.
All you have to do is fill out a brief questionnaire about your financial goals, and Vanguard’s advisers will help you set a tailored plan, and stick to it.
Once you’re set, you can sit back as Vanguard’s advisors manage your portfolio. Because they’re fiduciaries, they don’t earn commissions, so you can trust that the advice you’re getting is unbiased.

Waiting for the perfect entry point will likely cost you, according to research from Charles Schwab, and time out of the market could hurt your returns. To put this into perspective, research by Fidelity shows that if you invested $10,000 in the S&P 500 Index on Jan. 1, 1980, but missed the best five days in the following years, you’d miss out on $411,258 of potential returns by Dec. 31, 2022.
It’s a not-so-secret rule that starting early and regularly contributing to your 401(k) — and not touching the money until you retire — can start you on the journey to becoming a millionaire. And, like any journey, it all starts with taking the first step.
The S&P 500 index is often a good place to start. But if you want to beat the market, identifying key investment opportunities is critical.
Run by a team of hedge fund managers, Moby can help you discover stocks before they deliver multi-bagger returns. The investment research platform’s stock picks have outperformed the S&P 500 index by an average of 11.95% over the last four years. Fremantle skipper wins tribunal challenge, free to play
Fremantle skipper wins tribunal challenge, free to play
Fremantle captain Alex Pearce has been cleared of rough conduct, with his three-game ban dismissed at the AFL Tribunal.
Pearce successfully challenged a three-game suspension offered by match review officer Michael Christian.
The Dockers skipper clashed in a marking contest with Port Adelaide’s Darcy Byrne-Jones, who was concussed, in Saturday’s fixture in Perth.
Pearce’s actions were rated by Christian as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.
But the tribunal disagreed, dismissing the charge against the Freo captain.
Pearce told the tribunal he had no choice but to “impact the contest” in the second term of his side’s win against Port.
Asked by his counsel Tim Hammond whether he’d have “shirked” by pulling out of the contest, Pearce replied: “Yeah, it would not sit well with me if I was to pull out of that contest and not impact it.
“I wouldn’t be overly comfortable in the way that would look and the way my teammates would see that.
“And, to be honest, the way that the broader football public would view me as a footballer if I was to slow momentum and pull out of that contest just because there was going to be impact between two players.”
Pearce said he sprinted at full speed to close the space between himself and Byrne-Jones and ideally take a chest mark.
“I’m aware that there is going to be a collision between the two of us,” he said.
“At that point, I drop my (left) arm and brace for the impact … to limit the impact as much as possible.
“I thought I had made a play at the ball … it felt like it was just a collision in the marking contest.”
Pearce said he was disappointed to be penalised a free kick, let alone suspension.
“Given my role as a defender and role as captain of our club, I don’t believe that in that situation again I would be able to make a different decision than go at that ball and at that contest 100 per cent and make a play at the ball,” he said.
After an hour-long hearing, the three-member tribunal deliberated for about 30 minutes before chair Jeff Gleeson dismissed the charge.
“Pearce’s attempt to mark was entirely realistic,” Gleeson said.
“If not for Byrne-Jones entering the contest from the opposite direction, he would likely have taken the mark.
“We do not find that this was rough conduct.”

Grow Erie facility produces lettuce and herbs in Savocchio Park. It also makes a statement
Grow Erie facility produces lettuce and herbs in Savocchio Park. It also makes a statement
Bags of fresh kale and tender microgreens — distributed last week at an open house of the Grow Erie facility in Savocchio Park — are a reminder of what the new $5 million facility was built to do.
But supporters of the project say the crops grown there and the revenue they will produce only hints at its value.
Basil, kale, lettuces and other greens are grown at Grow Erie by Intag Aquaponics in the Savocchio Opportunity Park in Erie on May 16, 2025. Grow Erie is a partnership led by the ********* Community Investment Coalition to expand opportunities for nearby residents and stakeholders.
The 17,000-square-foot facility at 1811 Paragon Drive was built in the middle of a former brownfield in one of Erie’s poorest neighborhoods.
Developed by the Erie County Redevelopment Authority, the newly opened complex is owned by the ********* Community Investment Coalition, formed in 2016 by the Booker T. Washington Center, Martin Luther King Jr. Center and Urban Erie Community Development Corp.
Scientific support and design work for the facility come from a partnership with Integrated Agriculture Systems, known as INTAG.
The facility, which already has produced its first crops, is expected to benefit the community by providing jobs to neighborhood residents, returning money to MCIC and by supporting the construction and operation of a community garden, where residents can grow their own food.
The Erie-based Curtze Co., which serves the restaurant industry, already has signed on to be a lead customer for food grown in the commercial facility.
How does it all work?
Paul Nickerson, lead designer for INTAG, said the 17,000-square-foot facility provides a climate-controlled space where lettuce, kale and herbs are grown in plastic trays that keep the roots of those plants immersed in water.
Logan Milie, 21, cleans trays after use in greenhouses managed at Grow Erie by INTAG Aquaponics in the Savocchio Opportunity Park in Erie on May 16, 2025. Grow Erie is a partnership led by the ********* Community Investment Coalition to expand opportunities for nearby residents and stakeholders
It’s a common misconception, he said, that plants can’t survive when their roots are submerged. The problem isn’t the water, but the lack of oxygen. A special oxygen concentrator addresses that problem, he said.
“You can’t drown a plant, but you can suffocate it,” Nickerson said.
Elsewhere in the building, purple growing lights illuminate trays of microgreens, which are grown in potting soil and grow to maturity in between eight and 20 days.
Like the plants in the greenhouse, the microgreens are fertilized using processed fish sludge. For now, that sludge comes from the Fairview State Fish Hatchery. Eventually, the fish waste will be produced on site once the facility begins growing its own fish, Nickerson said.
Grow Erie is designed to benefit a social need, but it still faces the challenges of turning a profit, he said.
“You can’t just give the crops away,” Nickerson said. “Look at our power bill. These oxygen concentrators cost a lot of lettuce to run.”
Basil, kale, lettuces and other young plants are grown at Grow Erie by INTAG Aquaponics in the Savocchio Opportunity Park in Erie on May 16, 2025. Grow Erie is a partnership led by the ********* Community Investment Coalition to expand opportunities for nearby residents and stakeholders
Project is about more than fresh kale
Tina Mengine, CEO of the Erie County Redevelopment Authority, was among those on hand to show off the facility last week.
“It’s exciting. It’s been a long time coming,” she said. “This project embodies what economic development is. You take a brownfield that sat dormant for 20 years. It will employ people and will bring high-tech agriculture to the center of the city.”
Candace Battles, a retired social worker who is a board member of Our West Bayfront, was impressed.
“I think it’s awesome,” she said. “They are bringing something new to a community where people wouldn’t have had these opportunities.”
The idea came from the community
Funding for the project — $5.6 million in all — came from a variety of sources, including grants from the Erie Community Foundation, Erie County and the city of Erie.
But the idea came from the eastside community itself, said Gary Horton, who is both president of the NAACP in Erie and founder and CEO of the Urban Erie Community Development Corp.
“The idea for the project came not out of the mayor’s office, not the authority, but out of the minds of ****** and Brown people and new Americans,” Horton said.
In short, the concept was homegrown.
“There are so many people who think poor ****** and Brown people can’t do anything, but no one rode into our neighborhood on a white horse,” Horton said.
On one level, the Grow Erie project is being scored as a success.
The project is among those included in Infinite Erie’s Investment Playboook and it’s the first to be completed, said Kim Thomas, the group’s executive director.
More than anything, Thomas said, she likes the message sent by an investment of this size in an neighborhood where such investments are uncommon.
“It’s something new, it’s something transformational,” Thomas said. “It’s a game changer for the Buffalo Road corridor. I think what that does is spur motivation.”
More: Where does the $1 million-plus environmental cleanup at Erie’s Quin-T property stand?
Thomas expects the project, which already has brought scientists to work in this gleaming new facility, will create both jobs, spinoff investments and a sense of pride.
More: Urban agriculture site takes shape at Savocchio Park. When will it be ready?
It promises to change how people see the place where they live, she said.
“They see the investment in resources, not just in the downtown, not just on the bayfront, but in their own community.”

Anti-Musk sentiment runs high in *********** city as 95% of submissions oppose land ***** to Tesla | Adelaide
Elon Musk’s so-called “brand destruction” is in full flight in Adelaide, where residents have voted overwhelmingly to reject plans for a Tesla factory.
The city of Marion in South Australia is considering selling 2,664 sq metres of public land – which is contaminated and not publicly accessible – to Tesla which wants to build a battery factory on the plot.
The council has consulted the community and written a report that says the benefits – including 100 full-time jobs, boosted rates revenues, $56m in economic output and “Tesla-led training programs” – outweigh the “geopolitical or symbolic criticisms expressed in submissions”.
Of the nearly 1,000 submissions sent to the local council, 95% called for the proposal to be struck down, citing “anti-Tesla and anti-Elon Musk sentiment” and “Musk’s influence on global discourse via social media platforms”, as well as the environmental impact and potential loss of green space.
While environmental concerns played a part, the Tesla boss was the main reason people voted against the project.
Those against the proposal did not hold back on the reasons for their rejection – with the city of Marion choosing to censor some submissions.
“Because Elon Musk is a [redacted] human being and a [redacted]!” one person wrote.
“Elon Musk and Tesla are a [redacted] on humanity,” another said.
“Elon Musk is a full blown [redacted],” was another’s blunt assessment. While a further submission argued the site was not right for Musk: “Destroying trees to build a factory for a company owned by a [redacted] would be a vile choice.”
“We should not support and put money in the pockets of a [redacted] who openly [redacted] salutes, is [redacted] human,” was another’s take on Tesla moving into Marion.
Another had a more prosaic concern: “Please dear God”, they wrote. “It’s not going to be good for anyone … [and] it would majorly interrupt my roller skating route”.
More than half of the 948 community submissions came from outside the council area, but submissions from those in the immediate area of the site overwhelmingly opposed the development at 121 against and 11 for.
Those who voted in favour welcomed the jobs that would be created by Telsa, the skills that would be taught, and the “visionary approach” of the world’s richest person.
Musk has faced an ongoing backlash thanks to his role in the Trump administration, where he created the “department of government efficiency” (Doge), that has seen crippling cuts to government programs.
Tesla profits have dived recently, with analysts pinning the blame on a branding crisis thanks to Musk’s role in the White House.

Musk has denied branding is an issue, and blames the “macro demand for cars” in the current economic climate.
The city of Marion mayor, Kris Hanna, said most Australians wouldn’t approach the project from a political perspective.
“But there’s certainly a core group that has very strong anti-fascist sentiment and they are directing that to Elon Musk and anything related to him,” he said.
Hanna said there was both a “natural” community response and a political campaign to increase the “no” vote.
“If the decision is not to allow the factory to proceed it won’t harm Elon Musk’s interests because Tesla will just set up somewhere else in Australia that’s more welcoming,” he said.
Dozens of submissions referred to Musk’s interventions in American and European politics and his apparent Nazi-style salute earlier this year.
One critic, citing Guardian reporting, wrote: “I could not think of a worse developer to sell the land to. Tesla sales have been plummetting [sic] … this is likely to attract protests and negative attention that the neighbourhood does not need or want.”
Tesla and South *********** government agencies emphasised the economic benefits to the region in their letters of support, while a handful of residents said the land should be put to productive use.
Staff at the City of Marion officially recommended the council sell the land to Tesla, with the proposal to be discussed at a council meeting on Tuesday night.

Askari set for polymetallic field program alongside Namibian tin mine
Askari set for polymetallic field program alongside Namibian tin mine
Askari Metals is set to launch a phase one exploration campaign at the company’s prospective EPL 7626 area, one of three exploration licences within the company’s Namibian polymetallic Uis project.
The licence is contiguous with and about 4 kilometres northeast along strike from Andrada Mining’s operating Uis tin mine, which hosts a JORC-compliant estimated mineral resource of 77.51 million tonnes averaging 0.79 per cent lithium oxide, 0.15 per cent tin and 82 parts per million tantalum.
Askari’s planned field work includes mapping, rock chip sampling and tenement-wide soil geochemical sampling.
The proposed work will be undertaken by Askari’s African exploration crew under the guidance of the company’s chief exploration and project manager, Clifford Fitzhenry.
Fitzhenry, a geologist with 21 years’ experience, joined Askari two years ago in a then-new role of chief exploration and project manager in Africa. His appointment was a key part of Askari’s exploration strategy to accelerate its drilling and development program at its flagship Uis lithium project.
Askari says soil sampling is the company’s preferred means of conducting low-cost, effective exploration for buried lithium-caesium-tantalum (LCT) pegmatites in the EPL 7626 licence area.
An LCT pegmatite target is a specific type of granitic pegmatites, which have geological and geochemical characteristics that help exploration companies identify lithium-caesium-tantalum-style pegmatites. The pegmatites may also include tin, niobium and rubidium.
Following the soil geochemistry, the company can follow up and refine its priority targets with trench sampling.
A previous in-house remote sensing study across EPL 7626 identified zones with spectral tin-tantalite signatures characteristic of mica schists, which were also mapped on another of Askari’s nearby licence area, EPL 7345.
The company believes mica schists in this second licence area continue northeast beneath Andrada’s Uis tin mine and into the EPL 7626 area, most likely beneath cover.
Askari based the remote sensing study on Sentinel-2 multispectral satellite imagery, which can differentiate rock types, map regolith units, and identify surface mineralogy.
The company is now setting up for a licence-wide soil sampling program on an initial 200 metre by 200m sampling grid to pick up any geochemical anomalies associated with buried pegmatites.
The program will comprise about 54 square kilometres and will collect about 1407 samples.
The in-house re-processing of high-resolution satellite imagery and the development of our remote sensing hyperspectral methodology has allowed us to optimise our desktop targeting technique for the Uis project.
The company will determine any next work from the results of the first phase soil geochemical program on EPL 7626 and will design a follow-up infill sampling program to further test any anomalies encountered.
Askari also expects to receive assay results from its first phase trenching program at EPL7345 over the next few months.
This means that further work on the greater Uis project will comprise a second phase of infill soil geochemical sampling, followed by first phase trenching program at EPL 7626, and then a first phase trenching program on a third licence area.
In other work, Askari is progressing its Ethiopian gold strategy and its Tanzanian uranium strategy and is currently reviewing some prospective projects for potential acquisition.

Tesla sales plunge in Europe, with no sign of boost from new model
STORY: Tesla’s sales in Europe fell 49% in April from a year earlier, even as overall battery-electric sales rose almost 28%.
The U.S. EV maker’s upgrade of its Model Y is showing little sign of improving the brand’s tarnished image in the region.
Its sales dropped for a fourth month in a row and its share of the total market nearly halved to 0.7% from 1.3% a year ago.
The firm’s flagging sales in Europe reflect a shift away from the brand.
That’s as ******** competition strengthens and some protest against boss Elon Musk’s political views.
Total car sales in Europe remained roughly consistent with last year, falling just 0.3%.
The strongest sales growth came from electric and plug-in hybrid cars.
European carmakers are trying to cut domestic costs and tackle competition amid U.S. tariffs on auto imports and a slowing global economy.
Uncertainty also continues to overshadow the industry’s outlook despite eased U.S.-China trade tensions.
April sales in the EU, Britain and the European Free Trade Association fell to 1.07 million cars, following 2.8% growth a month before.
In big movers, registrations at ******** state-owned automaker SAIC Motor and Mitsubishi grew by over 24% and 22% respectively, while they fell by 24.5% at Mazda.

Nintendo has teamed up with Japan’s online marketplaces to fight Switch 2 scalping
Nintendo has teamed up with Japan’s online marketplaces to fight Switch 2 scalping
Nintendo has teamed with three of Japan’s major online marketplaces to fight Switch 2 scalping.
In a press release posted on Nintendo‘s Japanese website, the company announced that it has formed a partnership with Mercari, Yahoo! Auction and Rakuten Rakuma to prevent “the unauthorised listing of products related to Nintendo, including the Nintendo Switch 2 scheduled for release on June 5″.
According to the statement, Nintendo and the three marketplaces will take action against ‘unauthorised’ Switch 2 listings, including “proactive listing removal” and the setup of a co-operative framework that will let each marketplace share information.
In a separate statement on its own site, Yahoo! Auctions said it would consider Nintendo Switch 2 a ‘prohibited item’ from launch until an undetermined future date.
The company said it considered Switch 2 an item that “may disrupt the trading environment”, which it defines as anything that has “high visibility, significant demand as high-priced resale items, and a high likelihood of causing disruptions such as hoarding or price spikes”.
Yahoo! says that any Switch 2 listings made on the site during its prohibition ******* “may be subject to measures such as listing removal by our company, or other actions including account suspension”.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated last year that Nintendo wanted to avoid Switch 2 scalping by making enough consoles to meet demand, saying the company’s main plan was to make sure players didn’t have to turn to resellers because they could just buy a console at retail.
Demand for the console in Japan appears to be extremely high, however, with Furukawa warning last month that a “significant number” of players in Japan will miss out on Nintendo’s own pre-order stock, after 2.2 million applied for its My Nintendo pre-order lottery.
“To deliver Nintendo Switch 2 to all of you, we have been procuring a large number of components in advance and proceeding with production,” Furukawa told players last month. “On April 2, we announced the details of Nintendo Switch 2 and began accepting applications for a lottery ***** on the My Nintendo Store. As a result, we received applications from an astonishing 2.2 million people in Japan alone.
“However, this far exceeded our prior expectations and greatly surpasses the number of Nintendo Switch 2 units we can deliver from the My Nintendo Store on June 5. Consequently, it is with great regret that we anticipate a significant number of customers will not be selected in tomorrow’s lottery announcement on April 24.”
Nintendo has since held more rounds of its lottery, with customers not selected in the initial drawing automatically re-entered into the next round of the lottery. “However, even with the number of units available in the second lottery *****, we will not be able to fulfil all the applications we have received,” Furukawa warned. “We deeply apologize for failing to meet your expectations despite our preparations.”
Scalping – the act of buying scarce products with the sole purpose of reselling them online at a much higher price – has been an issue in the video games market for some time now, dating as far back as the Wii and PS3.
In 2021, Japanese retail chain Nojima Denki implemented a new policy designed to combat PS5 re-sellers, which saw it writing the buyer’s name on the side of PS5 boxes, as well as destroying the packaging for the controller.

Cristiano Ronaldo hints at Al-Nassr exit before Club World Cup
There are only a few teams in world football that could afford Ronaldo’s wages.
He became the best-paid player in football history when he joined Al-Nassr in 2023, on a deal reportedly worth £177m-a-year.
However, Ronaldo may be willing to sign a short-term deal with a club to play in the Club World Cup before reassessing his future.
Spanish newspaper Marca, external claimed last week that a club in Brazil had submitted an offer to sign Ronaldo.
Botafogo – one of four Brazilian clubs competing at the tournament – have been linked with the forward.
Asked about the prospect of signing Ronaldo, manager Renato Paiva said: “Christmas is only in December. But if he came, you can’t say no to a star like that.
“I don’t know anything – I’m just answering the question. But, as I said, coaches always want the best. Ronaldo, even at his age, is still a goal-scoring machine. In a team that creates chance after chance, he would be good.”

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 as a Game-Key Card
Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is also coming to Nintendo Switch 2.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will be released on October 30 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC, and now Switch 2 can be added to the list.
However, Square Enix has also confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game will be a Game-Key Card, while it appears the Switch version will be included on the cartridge.
So far, the vast majority of third-party Switch 2 games are Game-Key Cards, with only a few exceptions such as Cyberpunk 2077 and the Western version of Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion.
Game preservationists have criticised the system, calling it “disheartening” but inevitable.
A Collector’s Edition of the game has also been announced, which will be exclusively available at the Square Enix store. The Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake costs $149.99 and includes a physical copy of the game, acrylic figures of in-game sprites and digital content.
Square Enix also revealed that players who have save data from Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will receive several in-game items for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. These items can also be acquired via playing the game, but players can get them earlier via this save data bonus.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 smashes all-time Steam numbers bolstered by social media campaign
Star Wars Battlefront 2 smashes all-time Steam numbers bolstered by social media campaign
Star Wars Battlefront 2 has beaten its all-time Steam concurrent player numbers, five years after the game was released on the platform.
The game, which has seen a spike in popularity over the last week due to a social media campaign from fans attempting to revitalise interest in the series, saw 18,635 players on Steam on Monday, the highest number of concurrent players achieved on the platform since it was released.
When the game was first released in 2017, Star Wars Battlefront 2 was exclusive to EA‘s Origin platform. It was then later released on Steam in 2020.
While the original Origin release could have seen a higher initial concurrent player count, this week’s peak of 18,635 is by far the game’s highest Steam spike, far surpassing when the game was added to the platform.
Before this week, the highest the peak had ever reached on Steam was 10,489 back in January 2021, meaning the new record has nearly doubled that.
The game also re-appeared on the list of Steam’s 25 top-selling titles, suggesting that the social media campaign has recruited new players, as opposed to simply sparking a resurgence from existing ones.
EA ended support for the Star Wars shooter in 2020, after years of adding new heroes, maps, and modes to the game.
When Battlefront 2 was released in 2017, the game was met with intense backlash due to its microtransactions, which were seen as aggressive and exploitative by many. It was estimated at the time that it would take a player around 40 hours to earn enough free credits to unlock a single hero in the game. These locked heroes included iconic characters such as Darth Vader.
The backlash was so intense that EA reversed its initial microtransaction plan and removed them entirely. At the time, it was claimed that Disney privately scolded EA due to the public backlash, as the news of Battlefront 2’s microtransaction issues crossed over from the games press into mainstream news.
By the time support ended for Star Wars Battlefront 2, the community sentiment was positive, in stark contrast to the backlash the game faced at launch.
Following the viral resurgence in popularity for the game, a former Star Wars Battlefront 2 developer has said that he’d like to “get the band back together” for a potential new entry in the franchise.
Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront 2 were developed by Dice and published by EA during the publisher’s long-term exclusivity *******, producing Star Wars video games.
While EA continues to develop Star Wars games, such as the ongoing Jedi series and the upcoming Star Wars Zero Company, the Battlefront series is currently dormant.

Nintendo appears to have blocked the recording of videos on its Nintendo Today app
Nintendo appears to have blocked the recording of videos on its Nintendo Today app
Nintendo appears to have blocked the ability to record video content on its Nintendo Today app.
Nintendo Today, which was announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation on March 27 and released on iOS and Android on the same day, is a daily news app.
The app provides news, artwork, screenshots and video clips for existing or upcoming Nintendo games, and aims to give users numerous new pieces of content every day.
However, as initially spotted on Reddit by user Cube_play_8, Nintendo has seemingly implemented a new protection measure in the app which prevents users from recording any footage shown.
VGC attempted this with today’s news on Nintendo Today, which includes a Donkey Kong Bananza gameplay demonstration and a clip from Mario Kart World.
We used an iPhone’s built-in screen recorder to capture footage of us looking at each of today’s articles on Nintendo Today. All the screenshot and image gallery articles recorded with no issues.
However, as soon as we started the Donkey Kong Bananza video and the Mario Kart World clip, the screen went ****** after the PEGI logo appeared. The videos’ sound can still be heard, and the app overlay is still visible, meaning the only change is the video turning entirely ******.
It’s not yet clear if video recording is blocked on all devices – the Reddit user pointed out that while their current Android phone was unable to record the footage, their older phone is still able to record it.
The app doesn’t appear to have received an update for three weeks, suggesting that if this is a deliberate attempt by Nintendo to prevent recording of its videos, it’s a feature that may have already been on the app but hadn’t yet been activated until now.
The block also appears to have been retroactively added to all previous videos, even those that could have been screen recorded in the past, suggesting it’s not likely to be applied on a case-by-case basis going forward.
Assuming the change is deliberate, it appears that Nintendo has started blocking video recording in an attempt to drive more users to download the Nintendo Today app, rather than seeing its more interesting content shared online.
Shortly after the app was launched, Nintendo used it to announce the release date for The Legend of Zelda Movie, suggesting Nintendo Today could be the medium through which other surprise news may be announced in the future.

Buy this AI stock with more than 25% upside after a big decline, Piper Sandler says
SoundHound AI is a pure play in the rise of artificial intelligence that investors shouldn’t overlook, according to Piper Sandler. The firm initiated coverage of the AI stock on Monday with an overweight rating and a $12 per share price target. Piper Sandler’s forecast implies more than 25% upside from Friday’s $9.58 close. “With its voice-A.I platform, SoundHound is a direct play on the A.I revolution,” analyst James Fish wrote. The analyst highlighted a multitude of segments into which SoundHound can expand its growth runway, including further integrating its conversational AI technology into auto. SOUN YTD mountain SoundHound AI stock in 2025. “SoundHound’s original enterprise use-case was mainly in autos. There are multiple underlying positives for SoundHound here: just 4% penetration vs. white space of +25%, winning new OEMs, increasing IoT [internet of things] devices, ASPs expanding, & domestic,” the analyst said. “However, the auto-production slump (-1% Y/Y) and customer exposure (-4%) are creating challenges near-term.” “”The $47B serviceable opportunity across use-cases by 2027E is very early still,” Fish said. “Positively, we see a multi-headed A.I “monster” across QSRs & conversational A.I, early penetration in autos with increasing ASPs, leverage coming near to medium term given the business model transition & Amelia synergies, and a competitive advantage vs. even hyperscalers’ voice offerings.” SoundHound shares have taken a beating this year, losing more than half of their value. However, the stock has rallied nearly 18% in the second quarter and gained nearly 5% in the premarket. Only seven analysts cover the stock, per LSEG. Of those, four have a buy or strong buy rating while the remaining three rate it a hold. The average price target on SoundHound points to 23% upside.

King Charles is speaking in Canada today. Here’s why it’s not a normal royal visit — and what it has to do with Trump.
King Charles is speaking in Canada today. Here’s why it’s not a normal royal visit — and what it has to do with Trump.
King Charles II will address Canada’s Parliament on Tuesday, a rare gesture that comes as Canada grapples with tariffs and annexation threats by President Trump.
The British monarch, who formally serves as Canada’s head of state, arrived in the capital of Ottawa on Monday, part of a two-day visit that’s widely viewed as a form of pushback against Mr. Trump’s calls to make Canada the 51st state.
Why is King Charles speaking to Canada’s parliament?
The king is delivering a “Speech from the Throne,” which marks the start of a new session of Parliament after the center-left Liberal Party won last month’s federal election. The speech — written by ********* Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office, not the king — will lay out the new government’s agenda and priorities.
Marking the start of Parliament with a speech is a longstanding tradition in Canada and other former parts of the British Empire — but it’s highly unusual for the king to deliver the speech himself. Instead, the king’s representative in Canada, the governor-general, normally speaks on his behalf. The last time the monarch personally gave the speech was in 1977, when Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, traveled to Canada’s capital for the event.
The speech will take place at 11 a.m. EDT on Tuesday.
Is King Charles’ visit to Ottawa related to Trump?
Some watchers of ********* politics think so, especially as Mr. Trump has repeatedly mused about the United States annexing Canada, stirring strong backlash.
Jared Wesley, a political science professor at the University of Alberta, says the royal visit could be “an indication that the king takes Canada’s sovereignty seriously.”
“The explicit threats to Canada’s sovereignty probably got the attention of the king and his advisers,” Wesley told CBS News.
The visit could also play to domestic politics, Wesley says. Mr. Trump’s comments have “stirred up patriotism in some odd corners of Canada,” and the country’s status as a constitutional monarchy where the king is still technically the head of state is one major difference between Canada and its neighbor to the south. And even though most Canadians are fairly indifferent toward the monarchy, visits by royals always draw interest.
“It’s seen as a point of pride and distinction between Canada and the U.S.,” said Wesley, who previously served in several roles for Alberta’s provincial government.
University of Toronto political science professor Elizabeth McCallion said the visit is likely intended as a “reminder that we are an independent country” and a “rallying together of Canadians.”
Earlier this month, Carney told Sky News the invitation to Charles was “not coincidental.” In a statement welcoming Charles on Monday, the prime minister didn’t mention Mr. Trump, but did hint at Canada’s “distinct identity” and “historic ties that crises only fortify.”
Charles also has a longstanding relationship with Canada, visiting the country over a dozen times before ascending to the throne. Amid a rocky relationship with the United States, many Canadians have looked for signs of support from Charles, taking note of symbolic gestures like the crown’s decision to plant a maple tree at Buckingham Palace earlier this year, McCallion said.
McCallion says some Canadians also believe Mr. Trump’s longstanding fascination with the British royal family could play to the country’s benefit.
“There’s hope that when he’s visiting, Trump will take notice and respect the fact that Canada has connections to the British monarchy,” McCallion told CBS News.
Charles is the head of state for both Canada and the U.K., putting him in an unusual position as the U.K. seeks a stronger trade relationship with the Trump administration. Earlier this month, Carney criticized the U.K. government for inviting Mr. Trump to a state visit earlier this year, presenting Mr. Trump with an invitation from the king. The ********* leader told Sky News most Canadians “weren’t impressed by that gesture.”
What could King Charles say in the speech — and will he mention Trump?
McCallion thinks the speech to Parliament is unlikely to name Mr. Trump overtly — but it could mention Canada’s sovereignty. “Everybody knows what it means in this context,” she said.
The speech could have more explicit references to the U.S.-Canada trade relationship, though, as Mr. Trump threatens steep tariffs on ********* goods.
“I’m not saying that there should be a drinking game attached to it, but if there were … I think every time you heard the term ‘reset’ in relation to the relationship between Canada and the United States, [that] would be deserving of a drink,” Wesley said.
The speech could also reference other parts of Carney’s agenda, with nods to his promise to make Canada an “energy superpower” and his plans around affordability, Wesley notes.
Also worth watching: After the speech, Parliament will hold a debate and an up-or-down vote on the government’s agenda. If the vote fails, another federal election could be necessary — but both McCallion and Wesley said that’s highly unlikely.
What has Trump said about Canada — and how has Carney responded?
Mr. Trump has repeatedly floated annexing Canada in recent months, rattling ********* politics.
The 51st-state jabs sometimes appear tongue-in-cheek: Mr. Trump referred to Carney’s predecessor — who stepped down as prime minister ahead of new elections this year — as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” In other cases, Mr. Trump has cast absorbing Canada as a tidy way of resolving the U.S.’s trade deficit with its northern neighbor.
But Trudeau has reportedly called Mr. Trump’s talk of absorbing Canada “a real thing,” telling business and labor leaders in a private meeting that he sees taking over Canada as a way of getting access to the country’s mineral wealth, according to the public broadcaster CBC. Many ********* voters hold the same view, according to McCallion.
“I think maybe the first or second time, people were offended but thought he was kidding. And at this point, certainly no Canadians think he’s kidding,” McCallion said. “Most Canadians are taking it as a serious threat.”
When asked whether he would use military force to take over Canada, Mr. Trump said earlier this month, “I don’t see it.” But in a White House meeting with Carney days later, the U.S. leader still called the idea of annexing Canada a “wonderful marriage” that would deliver “tremendous” benefits to Canada, and referred to the border between the two countries as “artificial.”
Carney said in the meeting Canada “won’t be for *****, ever.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Trump has imposed sweeping tariffs on many ********* goods, leading Canada to hit the U.S. with retaliatory levies.
Last month’s ********* elections were dominated by Mr. Trump’s tariffs and annexation comments, and the race was widely seen as a referendum on who Canadians trusted more to deal with the Trump administration.
Carney’s Liberal Party — which has held power for almost a decade — previously trailed the Conservatives in polling, but its fortunes rebounded after Mr. Trump’s jabs at Canada. In a victory speech, Carney said the country’s “old relationship with the United States … is over,” and argued Mr. Trump is “trying to break us so that America can own us.”
“Our national identity is at times muddied because it’s made up of so many different cultures that have come together,” McCallion told CBS News. “Often, Canadians primarily express their national identity as not being American.”
