  4. Stock market today: Live updates Stock market today: Live updates Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on May 28, 2025. NYSE S&P 500 futures rose Wednesday night, buoyed by a strong earnings report from artificial intelligence heavyweight Nvidia. Futures tied to the broad market index rose 0.3%, while Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.5%. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipped 15 points. Nvidia shares jumped more than 4% in after-hours trading. The chipmaker reported exceeded expectations on the top and bottom lines in the first quarter, as its data center business recorded year-over-year growth of 73%. “Wednesday’s Nvidia earnings report is pivotal not just for Nvidia but for the entire stock market, as it can rejuvenate investor optimism across the board and help investors to focus on the power of AI and less on headlines out of Washington on tariffs and taxes,” said James Demmert, chief investment officer of Main Street Research. Separately, Salesforce shares rose about 1% after the software company posted better-than-expected fiscal first-quarter results and lifted its full-year forecast. Stocks are coming off of a lackluster session Wednesday. The S&P 500 ended the day almost 0.6% lower, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost 0.5%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 245 points, or 0.6%. Major U.S. indexes are on track to close the week—and month—higher, however. The S&P 500 and 30-stock Dow are up 1.5% and 1.2% this week, respectively, while the Nasdaq has rallied nearly 2%. The tech sector has surged more than 10% in May, fueled by AI announcements from Big Tech player Alphabet. This month, the S&P 500 has gained 5.7%. The Dow has added 3.5%, while the Nasdaq has jumped 9.5%. The surge in stocks comes after President Donald Trump on Sunday walked back his threat to implement a 50% tariff on the European Union on June 1, delaying the date to July 9. Although investors cheered the news, critiques of Trump’s tariffs have emerged given their wild effect on markets. 8. Stunt performer sues Kevin Costner over ***** scene Stunt performer sues Kevin Costner over ***** scene A stunt performer has sued Kevin Costner, alleging she was subjected to an unscripted ***** scene without proper warning, consent or protocols while shooting his film Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 2. Devyn LaBella filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court. It names Costner – the director, star and co-writer of the Horizon series of Westerns – and its production companies as defendants. “The impact of this impromptu work demand on Ms LaBella has been profound, not only upending a career Ms LaBella spent years building but leaving her with permanent trauma that she will be required to address for years to come,” the lawsuit says. Costner’s lawyer said the lawsuit has no merit, and LaBella’s assertions are contradicted by both the facts and her behaviour. A former gymnast, the 34-year-old LaBella has worked steadily as a Hollywood stunt performer since 2020, with credits including Barbie and Yellowjackets. LaBella’s lawsuit says she was the stunt double for one of the Horizon leads, Ella Hunt, throughout the production. The shoot included a planned ******* assault scene, shot in May of 2023, that LaBella performed much of because of its violent and physical nature, the lawsuit says. For that scene, protocols were followed, including meetings, rehearsals, the presence of an intimacy coordinator and minimal crew. But it alleges that the following day, in an unscripted scene with no warning, rehearsal or choreography, Costner directed an actor to pin LaBella down on a wagon and simulate *****. The lawsuit says Costner asked for many takes as he experimented with the violent action and did not make it clear when a shot was beginning or ending. “There was no escaping the situation, and all Ms LaBella could do was wait for the nightmare to end,” the suit says. It alleges that safeguards were ignored in violation of union contracts and industry standards. Costner’s lawyer, Martin Singer, said while the Hollywood actor wants everyone to be comfortable on his sets, LaBella’s claim has “absolutely no merit, and it is completely contradicted by her own actions – and the facts.” “The scene in question was explained to Ms LaBella, and after she performed the rehearsal in character with another actor, she gave her stunt co-ordinator supervisor a ‘thumbs up’ and indicated her willingness to then shoot the scene, if needed (which she was not),” Singer said in a statement. “That night, Ms LaBella had dinner with her supervisor, the stunt coordinator, and with the assistant stunt coordinator, and she was in good spirits and made no complaints to them. She continued to work on the movie for a few more weeks until her wrap date, and she took the stunt co-ordinator to a thank-you dinner.” Singer provided an image of a text message LaBella sent her stunt coordinator at the end of production saying, “Thank you for these wonderful weeks!” Singer said LaBella “is a serial accuser of people in the entertainment industry.” The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they have been ********* abused unless they come forward publicly, as LaBella has done. The lawsuit seeks damages in an amount to be determined at trial, and it seeks a judge’s order for the defendants to undergo ******* harassment training, to be required to use an intimacy co-ordinator on future productions and to issue LaBella a public apology. 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) National ******* Abuse and Redress Support Service 1800 211 028 Lifeline 13 11 14 Men’s Referral Service 1300 766 491 Source link #Stunt #performer #sues #Kevin #Costner #***** #scene Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Yeah, So This Republican Lawmaker Said He Doesn’t Drink Out Of Straws Because “That’s What The Women In My House Do” Yeah, So This Republican Lawmaker Said He Doesn’t Drink Out Of Straws Because “That’s What The Women In My House Do” *Big, heavy, tired sigh*. The last time we spoke about Fox News host Jesse Watters, he was criticizing Gov. Tim Walz’s masculinity before jumping into his own ideas on how men should behave. Jemal Countess / Getty Images “I know a lot of tough guys… I have rules for men,” Jesse said at the time, before rattling off his rules of thumb. Fox News / Twitter: @Acyn “You don’t eat soup in public,” he said. “You don’t cross your legs; and you don’t drink from a straw, and one of the reasons you don’t drink from a straw is because the way your lips purse. It’s very effeminate.” Yes, according to Jesse, men shouldn’t use straws. Related: 18 Major Global Events That American Media Is Ignoring Right Now, And Why They Actually Matter To Us Well that conversation, which took place in March of this year, has reared its head once more as Jesse sent a Fox correspondent to Capitol Hill to ask lawmakers the real questions. That question being their thoughts on Jesse’s “rules for men.” Fox News / Twitter: @Acyn In a clip of the deeply unserious exchanges, the correspondent tells Republican Rep. Tim Burchett, “[Watters] says men should not drink out of straws in public, or at all.” Related: A Clip Of Donald Trump Getting Angry After Being Fact-Checked Is Going Mega Viral, And It Sums Up His Entire Presidency In A Nutshell To which Burchett responds, “I don’t drink out of a straw, brother. That’s what the women in my house do.” As you can imagine, people online were less than impressed. “Masculinity so insecure, even sipping water has gender roles now,” one person wrote. “No straws, just straight sips of misogyny and microaggressions.” Others critiqued Fox News for centering issues they feel pale in comparison to other policies our leaders could be focusing on: “Imagine your country’s on fire and Fox News is debating the gender politics of straws,” someone wrote. And tons more shared images of President Donald Trump drinking from a straw or puckering his lips. Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images In response to everything, Burchett sent the following statement to MSNBC: “We are glad that the media is focusing on the issue of straw usage that Americans so deeply care about,” Burchett said. “My staff is working around the clock to address this problem in response to multiple media inquiries. We urged for Straw Policy to be included in the House version of the Big Beautiful Bill. Now, I am calling on the U.S. Senate to act on this vital issue in their version of the legislation. I recognize the importance of Straw Policy to the American people, and I want to assure everyone that I hear you.” So there you have it! Republican men vs. straws. The ultimate showdown. 12. Tesla investors demand Musk work 40-hour week at EV maker amid crisis Tesla investors demand Musk work 40-hour week at EV maker amid crisis Elon Musk interviews on CNBC from the Tesla Headquarters in Texas. CNBC Elon Musk needs to spend more time at Tesla as his electric vehicle company faces a “crisis,” according to a letter on Wednesday from a group of pension fund leaders who manage investments in the company. “Tesla’s stock price volatility, declining sales, as well as disconcerting reports regarding the company’s human rights practices, and a plummeting global reputation are cause for serious concern,” the investors wrote in a letter to Robyn Denholm, the company’s board chair. “Moreover, many issues are linked to Mr. Musk’s actions outside of his role as Technoking and Chief Executive Officer at Tesla, including his high-profile role as an architect of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).” The investors want the Tesla board to require Musk to work a minimum of 40 hours per week at the automaker as a condition of any new compensation plan they may arrange for him. They also want a clear succession plan for management of the EV business, and a policy that would apply to all Tesla directors limiting their outside board commitments at public and private companies. Early last year, the Delaware Court of Chancery ordered Tesla to rescind Musk’s 2018 CEO pay package, which had been worth around $56 billion, finding that Musk controlled the company, and the board’s compensation committee misled shareholders before seeking their vote to approve the plan. Musk now says he wants even more shares, amounting to 25% voting control of the company. Tesla’s brand value and reputation have declined since 2024, due largely to Musk’s incendiary rhetoric and political activities. In addition to pouring nearly $300 million into an effort to get Donald Trump back into the White House, Musk formally endorsed Germany’s far-right AfD party ahead of the country’s parliamentary election this year. At DOGE, Musk has led an initiative by the Trump administration to slash federal agencies. Tesla once ranked eighth among the most popular American brands in the Axios Harris Poll of public perceptions of the 100 most visible U.S. companies. But recently, Tesla dropped to 95th, behind six other automakers in that poll. Tesla’s stock price is down 12% this year, while the Nasdaq is down just 1%. Data this week revealed that Tesla’s monthly sales across Europe plunged by nearly half in April compared to the same time last year. That trend extends the steep declines Tesla saw in the first quarter. The investors who signed Wednesday’s letter own about 7.9 million shares in the company combined. They blamed a Tesla board that’s “unwilling to act in the best interest of all Tesla shareholders” by requiring Musk’s “full-time attention” on the company. Musk said this week that he plans to focus more on his businesses, which include xAI and SpaceX in addition to Tesla. Those who signed the letter included the pro-labor SOC Investment Group, American Federation of Teachers, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander and Oregon State Treasurer Elizabeth Steiner. The investors asked Tesla to add at least one new independent director with no personal ties to other board members. Tesla earlier this month said former Chipotle CFO Jack Hartung will join the company’s board. Hartung previously worked with Musk’s brother and Tesla board member Kimbal Musk, who was a board member at the ******** food chain. Tesla didn’t respond to a request for comment in response to the letter. Read the investors’ letter in full here. 14. ‘Catastrophic’: One missing after glacier collapse buries Swiss alpine village, Blatten ‘Catastrophic’: One missing after glacier collapse buries Swiss alpine village, Blatten A huge chunk of a glacier in the Swiss Alps has broken off causing a deluge of rock, mud, and ice to bury a mountain village. A spokesperson for the local authorities, Matthias Ebener, has confirmed that one person is missing after the catastrophic event, on Wednesday afternoon local time, in the alpine town of Blatten. “An unbelievable amount of material thundered down into the valley,” Mr Ebener said. Footage shared on social media captured the dramatic moment when the glacier partially collapsed, creating a huge cloud that covered part of the mountain as debris came crashing down, destroying homes and buildings in the Loetschental valley. He warned that there is a “risk that the situation could get worse.” Drone footage broadcast by Swiss national broadcaster SRF showed a vast plain of mud and soil completely covering part of the village of Blatten on Wednesday afternoon, the river running through it and the wooded sides of the surrounding valley. The rubble of shattered wooden buildings could be seen on the flanks of the huge mass of earth in the drone footage. If you’d like to view this content, please adjust your Cookie Settings. 15. Nvidia beats on Q1 revenue, sees $8 billion impact from China export rules Nvidia beats on Q1 revenue, sees $8 billion impact from China export rules Nvidia (NVDA) stock has rallied hard in May, gaining 24% in the past month. That leaves many investors wondering if it’s a good time to pile into the stock ahead of the chip giant’s earnings report. We’ve pointed out here that Nvidia stock tends to swing 7% in either direction the day after it reports. My colleague Laura Bratton has also noted that Nvidia’s earnings often surprise Wall Street. According to tastylive founder and CEO Tom Sosnoff, volatility in the stock is low, even heading into earnings, suggesting that “the expectations are for something rangebound to happen.” Sosnoff outlined several key points investors should keep in mind when determining whether to invest in a popular name like Nvidia: Pros: “It’s super liquid,” Sosnoff said on Wealth. “It’s got a very liquid derivatives marketplace. So you can do lots of different strategies and things like that.” Sosnoff also pointed out that Nvidia remains a market leader. “It’s the bluest of all blue chips right now,” he said. Cons: A major ****, according to Sosnoff, is that “it’s a crowded trade. Nvidia is pretty fully priced.” He added that “for the first time, we’re not seeing any call skew in there, which means that the derivatives markets, which are pretty good at pricing upside expectations, are kind of mixed right now. They’re saying, ‘you know what, upside and downside, we have similar expectations.'” “So I think the **** is that if Nvidia misses, there’s pretty decent pot odds that the downside move could be greater than the upside move if they hit it,” he explained. 16. Okta Stock Plummets Despite Earnings Beat — Should You Buy? Okta Stock Plummets Despite Earnings Beat — Should You Buy? Technology company Okta (NASDAQ:) saw its stock price plummet some 13% on Wednesday, despite a solid earnings report and outlook. The company, a leading provider of identity management and log-in services, beat revenue and earnings estimates in its fiscal first quarter of 2026. The firm generated $688 million in revenue, up 12% year-over-year, which topped estimates of $680 million. Net income was $62 million, compared to a $40 million net loss in the same quarter a year ago. Adjusted net income was $158 million, up from $117 million a year ago, while adjusted earnings were 86 cents per share, up from 65 cents in the first quarter a year ago. This topped analysts’ estimates of 77 cents per share. Its subscription backlog, or remaining performance obligation (RPO), jumped 21% to $4.1 billion, while the backlog expected over the next 12 months rose 14% to $2.2 billion. Further, the firm posted record adjusted operating income of $184 million, or 27% of revenue, up 38% year-over-year. “Okta had a solid start to FY26 highlighted by record operating profit and another quarter of robust free cash flow,” said Todd McKinnon, CEO and co-founder of Okta. “The world’s biggest organizations continue to turn to Okta to solve identity security across their workforces, customers, and AI use cases. We remain focused on driving profitable growth, accelerating innovation, and delivering the only modern, unified identity security platform for our customers.” Why Was Okta Stock Dropping? It is a little hard to pinpoint exactly why the stock dropped as much as it did. The P/E is enormous at over 2,000, but it is skewed by the fact that Okta hadn’t been profitable until the past few quarters. Its forward P/E, based on future earnings outlook, is a more reasonable 39, and its five-year PE-to-growth (PEG) ratio is low at 0.45. A PEG below 1 typically indicates a stock trading at a value to its long-term earnings potential. The stock may have been dropping because the company didn’t raise its outlook for the fiscal year. If that’s the case, it seems a bit overdone. Okta maintained its guidance, calling for revenue of $2.850 billion to $2.860 billion, which would represent 9% to 10% growth. That is slower growth than the last fiscal year, but still solid. Management stated in the report that they were taking “a prudent approach to forward guidance” and was accounting for “potential risks related to the uncertain economic environment.” That could suggest they are erring on the side of caution. Adjusted operating income is targeted at $710 million to $720 million for an operating margin of 25%. Further, adjusted net income is projected to fall between $3.23 to $3.28, which would be a 15% to 17% jump. That is also a lower growth rate than the previous year. Analysts were mixed on the report, as several raised their price targets, including Needham, which bumped it up $10 to $125 per share. That would be some 16% higher than the current price. Others, like UBS, dropped its target. But despite reducing the target by $20 per share, UBS still has a price target of $130, which would be a 20% gain. Overall, Okta has a median price target of $128 and is considered a buy by most analysts. Today’s selloff seems like a classic overreaction by the market and may represent an opportunity to buy the dip. But as always, do your own research first. 18. Ancient Maya Burial Study Challenges Human Sacrifice Theory Ancient Maya Burial Study Challenges Human Sacrifice Theory An ancient Maya site in Belize. Credit: Viv ****** / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 A new study by Dr. Angelina Locker challenges long-held beliefs about Maya human sacrifices by examining remains from a rural burial site near Dos Hombres in Belize, dating to the Late Preclassic ******* (300 BCE–250 CE). Instead, Locker proposes a symbolic and cultural explanation linked to spiritual beliefs and ancestral connections. Published in the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, her findings could reshape how researchers interpret secondary burials and human sacrifices in ancient Maya society. Rethinking interpretations of secondary burials Skulls, jawbones, teeth, and long bones found separate from primary bodies are often linked to ritual sacrifice or offerings in ancient Mesoamerican archaeology. These assumptions have persisted due to their prevalence in ceremonial centers and elite tombs. But Locker’s findings suggest a more nuanced understanding is needed, particularly when it comes to non-elite, rural burials. Maya’s soul beliefs suggest symbolic practices The Maya believed the soul was made up of four distinct parts. The “baah” was the self, often represented by the head; “ik’” was the breath or spirit, associated with wind, *****, and teeth; “ch’ulel” resided in the heart and blood; and “wahy” were spiritual companions, usually animals, believed to die with the individual. These beliefs show that even parts of a body, like teeth, could hold spiritual importance. The Dos Hombres site offers new insights Locker studied a burial discovered on the outskirts of Dos Hombres, an ancient Maya city that once supported a population of 10,000 to 15,000 people. Archaeologists have only uncovered 21 burials at the site, representing 35 individuals. Seventeen of those were found outside the city center, including one at a rural commoner household known as the Dancer Group, about 1.55 kilometers west of the main settlement. A closer look at the Dancer Group burial This burial, known as Episode 2, included the remains of a young woman and two others, only represented by teeth. Locker explains she focused on this burial because the others were not available during her dissertation research. Earlier interpretations labeled the grave as a primary burial that included sacrificial offerings. Scientific analysis reveals non-local connections Bioarchaeological and isotopic analysis tell a different story. The young woman had lived locally, while the other two individuals, aged between 20–34 and 30–40, were not from the region. She was buried with a marker stone and remains from a mussel feast, but otherwise few grave goods. Ancestral ties may explain tooth placements Locker argues this context doesn’t support a sacrificial narrative. Sacrifices in Maya culture were typically reserved for elite graves or major religious events. This simple rural burial lacks those hallmarks. Instead, the inclusion of non-local teeth may reflect the symbolic transport of ancestral spirits. Locker suggests that the teeth could have served as a spiritual connection, establishing kinship, claiming land, or honoring lineage. In Maya belief, placing the remains of ancestors in a new location may have reinforced a family’s bond to that land, even if the original burials were far away. Her findings add to a growing body of research questioning long-standing assumptions about Maya funerary practices, offering a broader, more human view of how people once honored their dead. 20. Markets sink as Fed’s decision fuels uncertainty Markets sink as Fed’s decision fuels uncertainty The crypto market faced broad selling pressure on May 28 as traders reacted to heightened uncertainty around U.S. interest rate policy. The global cryptocurrency market cap fell 4.2% to $3.52 trillion, with leading tokens such as Ethereum (-1.2%), XRP (-3.6%), and Solana (-4.1%) leading the decline. Bitcoin remains above $107,000, but it dropped 2.4% in the last 24 hours. The Federal Reserve stated that the risks of both inflation and unemployment are high, and that it remains vigilant, monitoring developments that might exacerbate either risk. The FOMC chose to hold the fed funds rate steady in the target range of 4.25% to 4.50%, without making any commitments to cuts or rate hikes at this time. Instead, they stated that their decisions would be data-driven and that they would address any risks that arose going forward. They also said they would continue the Fed’s balance sheet reduction process, which essentially means the Fed will gradually sell off U.S. Treasury and mortgage-backed securities to tighten financial conditions. Finally, as they always do, the Fed committed to returning inflation to 2%, which is consistent with maintaining substantial employment. Also, it stated that it is prepared to act either way on monetary policy if and when new risks are revealed. Markets are now re-evaluating their expectations. According to the CME’s FedWatch Tool, the probability of a rate cut by the September meeting is now 48.1%, with no change expected for 40.3%. In the meantime, Kalshi’s data anticipated a decline in the forecast for total rate cuts in 2025 from 4 to less than 2 total cuts. Counting on the Fed’s decision also slowing down the rate of balance sheet reduction, traders are now preparing for a prolonged environment of policy tightness, a backdrop likely to restrict near-term upside for crypto. 21. Trump was asked about the “TACO” trade and called it a “****** question.” Here’s what it means. Trump was asked about the “TACO” trade and called it a “****** question.” Here’s what it means. A new acronym is popping up on Wall Street to explain investors’ reaction to President Trump’s on-again, off-again tariffs: TACO. Coined by Financial Times journalist Robert Armstrong in a May 2 column, the tongue-in-cheek term stands for “Trump Always Chickens Out.” That phrase is meant to describe a pattern of stocks plunging when the Trump administration announces stiff new tariffs, then surging when Mr. Trump eases up on them days or weeks later. Since Armstrong’s column, Mr. Trump has pulled back on import duties on two other major U.S. trading partners. On May 12, he placed a 90-day freeze on 145% tariffs on ******** goods, while on May 26 he delayed 50% tariffs on European goods until July. In both cases, the markets jumped after Mr. Trump offered to ease tariffs. “[T]he recent rally has a lot to do with markets realizing that the U.S. administration does not have a very high tolerance for market and economic pressure, and will be quick to back off when tariffs cause pain. This is the TACO theory: Trump Always Chickens Out,” Armstrong wrote on May 2. In the most recent case, the market dropped sharply on Friday after Mr. Trump said he planned to hike tariffs on European imports to 50%. But on Memorial Day, Mr. Trump said he would ease up on those plans until July to give the European Union and the U.S. more time to negotiate. On Tuesday, the day U.S. markets reopened after the holiday, the S&P 500 rallied 2.1%. When asked about the term by a reporter at the White House on Wednesday, Mr. Trump responded that it was a “****** question.” “It’s called negotiation,” Mr. Trump said. “They wouldn’t be over here today negotiating if I didn’t put a 50% tariff” on Europe. He added, “[T]hey’ll say, oh, he was chicken. He was chicken. That’s unbelievable. I usually have the opposite problem. They say, ‘You’re too tough, Mr. President.'” Whatever the strategy at the White House, investors are becoming more comfortable with the Trump administration’s pattern of initially setting high tariff rates that it later reduces , noted Vital Knowledge analyst Adam Crisafulli. “[T]he narrative is growing increasingly bullish as investors become more comfortable with the severity of the tariff threat (the “TACO” mindset is being embraced by more people) while companies demonstrate an ability to absorb the import tax hike relatively well (the hit to [earnings per share] hasn’t been as draconian as feared),” Crisafulli wrote in a May 28 research note. Still, there may be too much complacency in the market about the threat of Mr. Trump’s tariffs, which major businesses like Walmart have warned will cause them to hike prices, as well as the wobbly fiscal outlook for the U.S., Crisafulli added. Earlier this month, Moody’s downgraded the U.S. credit rating, highlighting investor concerns about the government’s growing debt. “That said, the tariff narrative could stay in a state of benign optimism for the next several weeks (the big deadline is early/mid-July, when the 90-day reciprocal tariff/50% EU tariff suspensions expires) while tariff-driven inflation may not appear in the data until July (when the June numbers are reported),” the analyst noted. 23. Nvidia weathers tariff uncertainty as revenues surge Nvidia weathers tariff uncertainty as revenues surge Chip designer Nvidia reported that revenues grew in the first quarter of the year, rising more than 69% from a year ago. Profits also rose. “Global demand for NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure is incredibly strong,” chief executive, Jensen Huang said in a press release on Wednesday, adding that he expects demand for AI computing to “accelerate”. The US company’s sophisticated chips have played a central role in equipment made for artificial intelligence (AI) computing. Nvidia was the last major tech firm to report during a strong earnings season for tech companies whose shares have surged in recent weeks. Tech stocks, including Nvidia, had previously plummeted in April amid uncertainty over US President Trump’s tariff policies. On Wednesday, Nvidia said it had incurred a $4.5bn charge during the quarter as demand for its China-specific “H20” products waned. Nvidia’s initial forecast for that charge was significantly higher – at $5.5bn – a month ago. Washington restricted the ***** of those chips, which are difficult to sell outside of China, in April. Changes in global trade policies loomed large in the company’s forecast. New export controls and tariffs have increased the complexity and cost of its supply chain, and may continue to do so, the company said. Nvidia said it planned to increase manufacturing in the United States to strengthen the company’s supply chain. Last week, Mr Huang criticised the US rules blocking exports of advanced computing chips to China. The controls were put in place following concerns that chip technology with potential military uses could be deployed by companies loyal to China’s ********** party. Mr Huang blasted the policies as a “failure” and said they were backfiring against American companies. Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported Wednesday that President Trump was ordering US chip software suppliers to stop selling their products to ******** chip companies. The move is intended to make it more difficult for China to develop its own advanced chips that would compete with Nvidia’s. “The China export restrictions underscore the immediate pressure from geopolitical headwinds,” according to Emarketer analyst Jacob Bourne. Sustaining dominance would require Nvidia to navigate “an increasingly complex landscape of geopolitical, competitive, and economic challenges,” Bourne added. At the same time, Nvidia has benefitted from the emergence of new buyers among governments in the Gulf states. Earlier this month, Mr Huang travelled with President Trump to the Middle East where the company said it would sell hundreds of thousands of its AI chips in Saudi Arabia. “Countries around the world are recognizing AI as essential infrastructure — just like electricity and the internet — and NVIDIA stands at the center of this profound transformation,” Mr Huang wrote after the earnings announcement. Sales in Nvidia’s key data centre business grew 73% on an annual basis. 24. With Geost Buyout, Rocket Lab Moves to Challenge Prime Defense Contractors With Geost Buyout, Rocket Lab Moves to Challenge Prime Defense Contractors Rocket Lab USA, Inc. (NASDAQ:) announced a definitive agreement to acquire Geost, LLC, a specialized electro-optical and infrared payload manufacturer, for $275 million in a strategic move to enter the satellite payload segment and position itself as a disruptive prime contractor for U.S. national security space missions. Strategic Acquisition Creates New Business Vertical for Rocket Lab USA Rocket Lab Corporation has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the parent holding company of Geost, LLC, a Tucson, Arizona-based electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) payload development and manufacturing company, from Lightridge Solutions, a portfolio company of ATL Partners. The $275 million transaction consists of $125 million in cash and $150 million in privately placed shares of Rocket Lab common stock, with up to $50 million in potential additional cash earnout payments tied to revenue targets. The acquisition marks Rocket Lab’s formal entry into the satellite payload segment, creating an entirely new category within the company’s portfolio and strengthening its position as a provider of end-to-end national security space solutions. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. Founded in 2004, Geost has served as a rapidly growing producer of affordable high-performance optical systems for critical national security space missions, maintaining over 20 years of flight heritage across classified and unclassified missions. The company delivers advanced EO/IR sensor systems for missile warning and tracking, tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, Earth observation, and space domain awareness—core capabilities essential for achieving the U.S. Department of Defense’s goals for resilient, proliferated space architectures. The acquisition will bring Geost’s 115 highly trained professionals into Rocket Lab’s organization, expanding the company’s total headcount to more than 2,600 employees across its space manufacturing complexes, test facilities, and launch sites spanning California, Virginia, Colorado, Maryland, New Mexico, Toronto, New Zealand, and now Tucson. Rocket Lab will also gain Geost’s extensive product assets, manufacturing facilities and laboratories across Tucson and northern Virginia, intellectual property portfolio, and existing product inventory. Rocket Lab’s Positioning for Defense Market Disruption The Geost acquisition strategically positions Rocket Lab to compete for high-value defense contracts supporting programs like the proposed Golden Dome architecture and the Space Development Agency’s Tracking Layer. These proliferated space architectures represent the future of U.S. national security space operations, requiring advanced sensing capabilities that can detect, interpret, and respond to threats in real time within increasingly contested space environments. By bringing mission-critical payloads in-house, Rocket Lab enhances its ability to rapidly deliver integrated spacecraft systems purpose-built for U.S. national security applications while reducing integration risk, lowering costs, and accelerating delivery timelines. This vertical integration strategy enables the company to offer complete, end-to-end solutions rather than competing solely on launch services, potentially commanding higher margins and longer-term contracts. Rocket Lab founder and CEO Sir Peter Beck emphasized the acquisition’s alignment with the company’s disruptive mission, stating that bringing advanced electro-optical and infrared payloads in-house supports “secure, responsive, and cost-effective systems at scale.” The addition of Optical Systems as a new capability category cements Rocket Lab’s role as a disruptor in national security space, expanding beyond its traditional launch services business model. Bill Gattle, Geost’s General Manager and CEO of Lightridge Solutions, noted that integrating Geost’s advanced optical capabilities represents “a natural next step for Rocket Lab as the company expands its end-to-end space systems.” The combination leverages Rocket Lab’s infrastructure to produce these systems at scale, positioning the company to meet accelerating demand for high-performance space solutions across government and commercial markets. Financial Impact and Strategic Value The $275 million acquisition represents a significant investment in Rocket Lab’s growth strategy, with the deal structure including both immediate consideration and performance-based earnouts that align the transaction value with Geost’s revenue achievement. The mix of cash and stock consideration preserves Rocket Lab’s balance sheet flexibility while providing Lightridge Solutions with ongoing exposure to the combined entity’s growth prospects. Geost’s full suite of sensing solutions enables warfighters and mission operators to execute with enhanced speed and precision in contested environments, addressing critical Department of Defense priorities for space-based intelligence and surveillance capabilities. The acquisition expands Rocket Lab’s addressable market beyond launch services into the higher-margin payload and systems integration segments, potentially improving the company’s long-term profitability profile. The transaction also strengthens Rocket Lab’s competitive positioning against larger defense contractors by enabling the company to offer integrated solutions that combine launch services, spacecraft manufacturing, and now advanced payload capabilities under a single prime contract. This end-to-end approach reduces customer complexity while providing Rocket Lab with greater control over mission success and schedule adherence. Rocket Lab’s established track record includes deploying over 200 payloads from launch sites in the United States and New Zealand for private and public sector organizations, with spacecraft selected to support NASA missions to the Moon and Mars, as well as the first private commercial mission to Venus. The addition of Geost’s capabilities positions the company to pursue larger, more complex national security missions that require sophisticated sensing and intelligence-gathering capabilities. RKLB Stock Continues to Gain The stock demonstrated significant intraday volatility with a trading range between $26.68 and $28.76, reflecting active investor interest following the acquisition announcement. Volume reached 20,325,415 shares, substantially above the average volume of 16,854,466 shares, indicating heightened institutional and retail participation in response to the news. Rocket Lab’s market capitalization stands at $13.271 billion, with the company maintaining a strong cash position of $428.4 million against total debt-to-equity ratio of 113.54%. While the company reports negative earnings with a diluted EPS of -$0.41, the stock’s impressive performance metrics include a 583.14% gain over the past year and 475.20% return over three years, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s long-term growth strategy. Analyst sentiment remains bullish with price targets ranging from $16.00 to $35.00, averaging $26.81. The current trading level above the average target suggests market optimism about Rocket Lab’s transformation from a pure-play launch services provider to a comprehensive space systems company. The Geost acquisition represents a tangible step toward this evolution, potentially supporting continued stock price appreciation as the company demonstrates execution on its end-to-end space solutions strategy. *** Neither the author, Tim Fries, nor this website, The Tokenist, provide financial advice. 25. ‘Coming for a while’: Nationals heavyweight Barnaby Joyce offers candid reflection on brutal exile to Opposition backbench ‘Coming for a while’: Nationals heavyweight Barnaby Joyce offers candid reflection on brutal exile to Opposition backbench Barnaby Joyce says it is “a bit disappointing” he learned of his exile to the opposition backbench via the media but that he saw “it coming for a while”. Opposition leader Sussan Ley unveiled her shadow cabinet on Wednesday after striking a new Coalition agreement with David Littleproud, officially ending the historic, albeit brief, separation of the Liberal and National parties. Mr Joyce, one of the staunchest pro-Coalition MPs in the National Party, was not among the names in the Opposition Leader’s new-look shadow executive. He said on Thursday he “read about it about a week before it happened, but that’s politics”. Camera IconBarnaby Joyce says it is ‘disappointing’ he learned of his exile to the opposition backbench via the media but that he saw ‘it coming for a while’. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia “That’s life — move on to other things,” he told Nine. Mr Joyce was among several senior MPs Ms Ley reached out to in an effort to save the Coalition and maintained his support for the 80-year-old political partnership both publicly and through backchannels. He said it he did not know why the Nationals leader sent him to the backbench, but said it was Mr Littleproud’s “prerogative”. Though, he did dismiss Mr Littleproud’s framing as “generational change”. “It’s not about generational change,” Mr Joyce said. “There are people who are older than me now. I’m 58, I’m not 103.” Camera IconThe Liberal and National parties are officially the Coalition again after leaders Sussan Ley and David Littleproud inked a new agreement.
