Maui surfer recovering after shark *******, thanks ‘hero’ for watching over him
WAILUKU (KHON2) — A 61-year-old Maui surfer was released from the hospital on Friday, just one week after losing his leg in a shark ******* in Waiehu.

Kenji Nonaka said he’s felt uneasy about sharks ever since his hero ***** after being attacked on Oahu earlier this year, but said this won’t keep him out of the water forever.
Nonaka loves surfing, he loves it so much he decided to move to Hawaii back in the 80s. He said he started on Oahu but it was a little too crowded, so he flew to the Valley Isle and fell in love with Maui. He’s called Wailuku home for 34-years.
He said he tries to go surfing every morning before going on a morning walk. “I’m happy now,” he said.
Sand Piles in Waiehu is one of his favorite spots to surf.
He said he started feeling nervous about sharks in the water after one bit a board at Sand Piles a few months ago.
“At the time I was scared,” Nonaka said. “After that, I put the protection on my leg.”
Delays at Hilo airport cause several to miss flight
He said he started wearing a shark band on his ankle that uses magnetic technology to deter sharks, but while on dawn patrol at his favorite spot on Nov. 1, and with about seven people in the water, a shark bit Kenji’s left leg.
“I was screaming, and a couple friends came to me and they said, ‘Kenji! Catch a wave.’”
After a few attempts, he finally caught one that brought him closer to shore.
“My friend pushed me, I paddled, I kicked, paddle, paddle and then got to the beach, and a couple of friends carried me and some homeless people too helped me,” he remembered.
He said they moved him to a concrete area so his leg wouldn’t get infected in the sand, trees, and dirt. His doctor told him he was able to keep his knee because his leg was clean.
He thanks his friends who showed no ***** helping him knowing there was a shark in the water.
“They don’t care and they came to me and gave me power and aloha and I am happy that’s why I’m still alive,” he said.

Nonaka said he also believes someone was watching over him.
“So many shark attacks lately, on Oahu, Tamayo Perry, my hero, he passed away, and it was so sad. I pray every day, but maybe this time he helped me, I pretty sure,” he said.
Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguard and waterman Tamayo Perry ***** in June 2024, after he was attacked by a shark while surfing at his favorite spot near Oahu’s North Shore.
Nonaka said he’s looking into a prosthetic leg in the future, and can’t wait to get back out in the water. For now, he’s incredibly thankful for all the love and support from loved ones and strangers.
“They gave me plenty of aloha. I don’t know how to say it, but thank you so much, I appreciate it, I am grateful,” he said while crying.
“I love surfing, I want to go back surfing, as for the the shark it’s their property [the ocean], that’s why we have to share,” he added.

RFK Jr. May Not Be Able to Join Trump’s Cabinet for Funniest Reason
RFK Jr. May Not Be Able to Join Trump’s Cabinet for Funniest Reason
Donald Trump’s team may already be having doubts about one of the most recent additions to its ranks: Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Ahead of Trump’s victory in the presidential race Tuesday, Kennedy was already talking about his plans as head of the Department of Health and Human Services, including removing fluoride from the U.S. supply of drinking water. Trump has signaled that he would be open to the idea, even though experts say that fluoridation prevents people from getting life-threatening infections.
After Trump won, Kennedy did an ominous interview on MSNBC, where he was pressed about his personal skepticism about vaccines and how that might factor into his future role overseeing the Food and ***** Administration. Trump transition co-chair Howard Lutnick had previously claimed that Kennedy had plans to strip even long-standing vaccines from the market.
When backed into a corner, Kennedy claimed that he was “not going to take away anybody’s vaccines,” but, apparently, some in the Trump camp weren’t thrilled by the optics of the conversation.
“That is not what we want people focused on today,” a source close to Trump told CNN.
Inside Trump’s camp, it seems concerns reach much further than bad press. There have been discussions that Kennedy would not pass a background check to obtain security clearance for his Cabinet-level position.
“If you dump a bear in Central Park and think you’re above the law, you don’t want to have to go through that gauntlet of political correctness,” one former Trump official who’d been briefed on those discussions told CNN.
In August, it was revealed that Kennedy had found a baby bear carcass in upstate New York and then dumped the carcass in Central Park because he ran out of time to dispose of it before going to the airport and thought staging it was funny. Kennedy has also gotten into trouble for chain-sawing the head off a beached whale.

UN climate summit’s juggling act increasingly difficult
UN climate summit’s juggling act increasingly difficult
The ******* Nations’ annual Conference of the Parties (COP) climate summit has produced its own set of promises, plans and paperwork to chase but the rationale for these discussions can be hard to follow.
Here’s what you need to know about why the 2024 COP29 summit in Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku matters.
* WHY DO WE HAVE A YEARLY COP?
– Because climate change will affect every country, regardless of whether it contributed to the problem, it demands global solutions that can address the diversity of needs across countries.
– In signing the 1992 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change that launched the global negotiations, the parties that agreed to it took pains to differentiate between the wealthy nations that caused the bulk of warming and poorer countries that suffer disproportionately from it.
– Put another way, the talks are framed around the idea that the countries that benefited the most from industrialising should take the most responsibility for dealing with the warming that has resulted.
– Addressing that imbalance has become more difficult as developing countries’ economies have grown and rich nations juggle competing costs including war.
* WHAT CAN AN ANNUAL SUMMIT ACHIEVE?
– The summit provides a place for countries to discuss solutions, including energy policies, financing schemes and funding needs.
– Almost every summit is attended by world leaders, giving an important signal that their countries are committed to the UN framework’s goals. The leaders’ presence also helps countries hold one another accountable for past promises.
– But the annual COP is just the main event in a continuous process. Country representatives meet year-round to build support for new climate action proposals ahead of COP, where they can be agreed by consensus of all countries.
* IS THE PROCESS WORKING?
– While each summit is meant to advance global climate action from the year before, the event also offers countries a chance to show their citizens the problem is being addressed.
– Importantly, the exercise has seen countries counting and reporting their emissions and has helped move hundreds of billions of dollars in climate aid to developing nations.
– By requiring decisions by consensus, the process also ensures strong global support for agreed actions, improving the chances these actions will be implemented.
– The pace of progress has been too slow to contain the rise in global temperatures. Since COP summits began in 1995, both emissions and temperatures have continued to rise, meaning the world is on track for extreme climate change.
– Proponents of the UN framework process say there is no alternative for negotiating major socio-economic changes to try to limit global warming.
* WHAT WILL WE GET OUT OF COP29?
– This year’s summit is hoping for a few headline agreements: a new annual climate finance target, a deal to get multilateral carbon credit markets working, and more aid money pledged for countries already hit by costly climate disasters.
– Beyond that, negotiators will continue to work on technical agreements that build on work done at previous summits.
– Outside the formal COP framework, groups of countries could launch initiatives or pledge funding for specific projects. Companies will likely announce commercial deals related to climate action, while financiers try to raise cash for climate investments.
* WHAT IS AZERBAIJAN’S ROLE IN COP29?
– Azerbaijan holds the presidency of COP29 for 2024 when the rotating COP presidency fell to Central and Eastern Europe.
– Brazil will serve as ****** America’s host for COP30 in 2025.
– As summit host, a country works the entire year to steer pre-summit negotiations and lobby other governments for ambitious action. This gives the presidency an important part in defining the summit’s priorities.
* WHAT ELSE HAPPENS AT A COP?
– Beyond the country negotiations, the COP summit offers a chance for anyone to try to draw attention, or funding, to their cause.
– Hundreds of side events see activists and scientists rubbing shoulders with industry lobbyists and banking heavyweights.
– Public-facing conference stages host panel discussions on topics from ocean acidification to designing carbon offset projects.
– An exhibition hall, dubbed the “Green Zone” features discussions led by national delegations, non-profit organisations and corporations.
– While some summits have seen big organised protests, such as the rally of thousands outside of COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, the past two conferences in Egypt and the ******* ***** Emirates have allowed for protests only in designated, roped-off areas.
– Azerbaijan, which also has banned public protests, will likely see little civic action outside the high-security conference site.

Former Utah Tech president faces lawsuit over ‘vulgar’ display attributed to employees, alleged retaliation
Former Utah Tech president faces lawsuit over ‘vulgar’ display attributed to employees, alleged retaliation
NOTE: A lawsuit represents only one side of a story.
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Richard “Biff” Williams, former president of Utah Tech University, is facing a lawsuit over a “crude, *******, vulgar, obscene, and damaging” gift that was left on one employee’s porch and attributed to the three employees who are now suing Williams and the university.
Williams — who officially stepped down as president of Utah Tech in Jan. 2024 — now serves as the president of Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. On Saturday, Nov. 9, Williams sent an email to the MSU community regarding the lawsuit, which was filed in Utah court on Nov. 7.
Federal charges filed against Colorado residents for destroying historic site in Utah national park
In a screenshot of the email obtained by ABC4’s sister station KOLR, Williams wrote to students that he “initiated what [he] intended to be a humorous gesture” toward a Utah Tech staff member.
“This was a mistake. I regret my lapse in judgment, and I accept this as a learning moment,” Williams wrote to MSU students. “I apologize for the undue attention this has brought to the university.”
Williams is one of 20 identified defendants — including Utah Tech University and the Utah Board of Higher Education — listed in the lawsuit. The plaintiffs — one male and two female employees — are suing for economic and non-economic damages associated with emotional distress, humiliation, pain and suffering, and retaliation.
Background
Each of the plaintiffs in the case worked, in some capacity, with Utah Tech’s Title IX office — for example, in a supervisory, advisory, or managerial role — and each of the plaintiffs joined the staff at Utah Tech between Jan. and Aug. 2020, according to the lawsuit.
In Sept. 2021, the plaintiffs responded to the display of “highly obscene and vulgar ******* comments” in a public break room, after the display reportedly lasted for more than four years. The plaintiffs’ response in Sept. 2021 led to a “hostile work environment” and a “poisoned well,” the suit claims.
“Utah Tech’s pattern of hostile and brazen misconduct, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation by the senior male administrators culminated in a crude, *******, vulgar, obscene, and damaging display left on the porch of a Utah Tech administrator by the then-sitting University President Williams, and falsely attributed by him to the Plaintiffs,” the lawsuit alleges.
The display was made up of vegetables arranged in a phallic shape on the porch of the university’s Vice President of Marketing and Communications, following a medical procedure.
Williams is accused of attributing the “innately *******” display to the three employees who filed the lawsuit. Documents said the plaintiffs’ names were listed in a note that accompanied the display, which included ******* innuendo and misspelled names of two of the plaintiffs.
Williams was caught on home security footage leaving the display and the note, though his face was obscured by his hoodie, the suit claims. Before the incident, Williams reportedly told his chief of staff that he intended to drop a gift off for the administrator after the medical procedure.
The suit claims, in part, that “Williams’ misconduct was directed toward Plaintiffs in response to their ********** of their duties” during the incident addressed in Sept. 2021.
The images of the display and the note attributing it to the plaintiffs were shared in a group chat with 11 other staff members, and the images were also shown at a Board of Trustees meeting and a luncheon.
Prior to the luncheon, the lawsuit says none of the plaintiffs were made aware of their names being attached to the display, and no other staff members reported the incident to the proper channels.
When confronted about the display and the note in front of members of the Board of Trustees, one of the plaintiffs was “shocked, embarrassed, and humiliated,” the suit says.
The lawsuit further alleges that the university did not provide the employees with “a timely and adequate remedial process,” according to the university’s policy.
The suit claims the university and the Utah State Board of Higher Education conducted a “sham investigation” and that their claims against Williams were dismissed after the former president announced his departure since the Utah Board of Higher Education “would no longer have ‘jurisdiction’ over Williams after he stepped down as President.”
One of the plaintiffs was placed on “involuntary leave” in Feb. 2024 and was “banished” from the school’s premises. That employee has not yet been able to return to their duties, the lawsuit said. Another plaintiff has reportedly been “frozen out” of duties and left out of other processes.
The plaintiffs are suing over fourteen causes of action, including discrimination (based on ****, race, and national origin), retaliation, defamation per se, and breach of contract, among others.
“This experience continues to remind me how important it is to always strive to foster a campus environment that is safe and welcoming to all students, faculty and staff,” Williams wrote in the email to MSU.
ABC4.com reached out to Missouri State University for further comment, and received the following statement from the Board of Governors:
The Board of Governors of Missouri State University is aware of the pending lawsuit and continues to have confidence in President Williams’ ability to lead Missouri State University. We are committed to working alongside him to ensure that the university is a safe and welcoming environment to all students, faculty and staff.”

Clues and answer for Sunday, November 10
Clues and answer for Sunday, November 10
Hey, there! We hope you’re making the most of your weekend. If you’re reading this, odds are that you’re taking a few minutes to kick back and relax with the latest round of Wordle. In case you need a little help, here’s our daily Wordle guide with some hints and the answer for Sunday’s puzzle (#1,240).
It may be that you’re new to Wordle and you’re not sure how to play the game. We’re here to help with that too.
What is Wordle?
Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. The gist is that there is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone.
Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game’s success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats.
The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 4.8 billion times in 2023. So, it’s little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily.
How to play Wordle
To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day’s secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren’t in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard.
You’ll only have six guesses to find each day’s word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It’s also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once.
Wordle is free to play on the NYT’s website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak.
How to play Wordle more than once a day
If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication’s games, you don’t have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You’ll have access to an archive of more than 1,000 previous Wordle games. So if you’re a relative newcomer, you’ll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions.
In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordlebot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day’s game.
Previous Wordle answers
Before today’s Wordle hints, here are the answers to recent puzzles that you may have missed:

Today’s Wordle hints explained
Every day, we’ll try to make Wordle a little easier for you. First, we’ll offer a hint that describes the meaning of the word or how it might be used in a phrase or sentence. We’ll also tell you if there are any double (or even triple) letters in the word.
In case you still haven’t quite figured it out by that point, we’ll then provide the first letter of the word. Those who are still stumped after that can continue on to find out the answer for today’s Wordle.
This should go without saying, but make sure to scroll slowly. Spoilers are ahead.

AP photos show the ******* of Southern California wildfires and the crushing aftermath
Before the wildfire comes a decision: what to save. It often comes down to “the smallest things,” Dawn Deleon told ABC7. The Mountain ***** destroyed her house in Ventura County, California this week.
Cats, dogs and horses. Family photos and SD cards and mementos. A single bag of clothes.
It’s a choice becoming ever more common as human-caused climate change adds fuel to the destructive wrath of wildfires around the world, especially in already *****-prone landscapes like Southern California, with its strong Santa Ana winds that rustle flame-adapted vegetation.
The power of ***** is evident. Palm trees turn to silhouettes against a raging orange wall. Firefighters push a vintage car through a haze of smoke. A woman clutches a scarf to her masked face as she leads her horse away from a burning hillside. Towering blazes strip homes to their foundations.
“It’s never a question of ‘if’ but rather ‘when’ and ‘how big’ when it comes to wildfires in Southern California,” said Alex Hall, director of UCLA’s Center for Climate Science. He called the impact on lives, livelihoods and ecosystems “truly devastating.”
The flames forgive little. Lucky residents escape with their lives and the few things that matter most. The unlucky lose the irreplaceable.
Often residents must return to sift through ash and rubble. Every now and then comes a surprising remnant — like a teapot with the word “blessed” in soot-covered cursive.

Russia suffers worst month for casualties, says *** defence chief
Watch: Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said the Russian people were paying an “extraordinary price” for ******’s invasion of Ukraine
Russia has suffered its worst ever month for casualties since the start of the war in Ukraine, the *** chief of defence staff has told the BBC.
Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said Russia’s forces suffered an average of about 1,500 ***** and injured “every single day” in October, bringing its losses to 700,000 since the war began in February 2022.
Russia does not disclose the number of its war *****, but Western defence officials have said October’s ****** toll was the heaviest so far.
In an interview with BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Sir Tony said the Russian people were paying an “extraordinary price” for ******’s invasion.
“Russia is about to suffer 700,000 people ******* or wounded – the enormous pain and suffering that the Russian nation is having to bear because of ******’s ambition,” said Sir Tony.
He said the losses were for “for tiny increments of land”.
“There is no doubt that Russia is making tactical, territorial gains and that is putting pressure on Ukraine,” he said.
But he added that Russia is spending more than 40% of its public expenditure on defence and security, which he said was “an enormous drain” on the country.
While allies of US President-elect Donald Trump insist that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may have to cede territory to bring the conflict to an end, Sir Tony insisted that Western allies would be resolute for “as long as it takes”.
“That’s the message President ****** has to absorb and the reassurance for President Zelensky,” he told the programme.
Trump has consistently said his priority is to end the war and stem what he characterises as a drain on US resources, in the form of military aid and financial support to Ukraine.
But he has yet to divulge how he intends to do so – and will likely be hearing competing visions for Ukraine’s future from his various advisers.
Earlier this week, ****** congratulated Trump on his election victory and said Trump’s claim that he can help end the war in Ukraine “deserves attention at least”.
Trump’s Democratic opponents have accused him of cosying up to Russian President Vladimir ****** and say his approach to the war amounts to surrender for Ukraine that will endanger all of Europe.
Bryan Lanza, a Trump political adviser during his 2016 and 2024 campaigns, has said the incoming administration will focus on achieving peace in Ukraine rather than enabling the country to gain back territory occupied by Russia.
Mr Lanza told the BBC the incoming administration would ask President Zelensky for his version of a “realistic vision for peace”.
A spokesperson for Trump distanced the incoming president from the remarks, saying Mr Lanza “does not speak for him”.
Last month, Zelensky presented a “victory plan” to the Ukrainian parliament that included a refusal to cede Ukraine’s territories and sovereignty.
The Kremlin dismissed the plan with a spokesman saying Kyiv needed to “sober up”.

Is It Related to P Diddy?
Is It Related to P Diddy?
With recent headlines dominating the news cycle about a certain music mogul, some gaming fans have started questioning the origins of one of Nintendo’s most beloved characters. Diddy Kong, who recently made an appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, has been a staple of the Nintendo universe for three decades.

As social media continues to buzz with new developments, rumors, speculation, and *********** theories, it’s worth taking a look back at how this iconic character got his name, and whether recent events should have any bearing on his future in gaming.
After all, what’s in a name, and does sharing one with a controversial figure automatically taint a character’s legacy?
The Story Behind Diddy Kong’s Name
Diddy Kong and Donkey Kong in Donkey Kong Country (1994). | Image Credit: Nintendo
When Rare was developing Donkey Kong Country in the early ’90s, they initially planned to reimagine Donkey Kong Jr. as a new character. However, Nintendo wasn’t keen on drastically changing an established character’s design. This led to the creation of an entirely new sidekick for DK, with the team focusing on creating a character that would complement DK’s strength with agility and speed.
When it came to naming this new character, the team at Rare went through several iterations. As Gregg Mayles, lead designer on Donkey Kong Country, revealed in an interview with GamesRadar:
We had a sheet of paper that we passed around where potential names were scribbled down. Some were hilariously bad: Diet DK, DK Lite and Titchy Kong. We settled on Dinky Kong, but after legal advice decided to change it to Diddy.
The name “Diddy” was apparently chosen to reflect the character’s diminutive size and playful nature, with “diddy” being British slang for “small” or “tiny.” And while the name has stuck for three decades, recent events have some fans wondering about its future:
The timing of Diddy Kong’s creation is particularly interesting, as one Redditor points out:
Comment by from discussion indonkeykong
This historical context is crucial, as it demonstrates that the character’s name was established well before any potential negative associations. Another user adds some perspective with a similar example:
Comment by from discussion indonkeykong
The gaming community’s response to these comparisons highlights an important point: fictional characters shouldn’t necessarily be penalized for sharing names with controversial real-world figures, especially when the character predates the controversy and has built its own distinct identity.
Nintendo’s History of Character Evolution
Diddy Kong in Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010) | Image Credit: Nintendo
While Nintendo has indeed changed character names in the past—from “Jumpman” to Mario, “Princess Toadstool” to Princess Peach, and the original Donkey Kong becoming Cranky Kong—these changes were typically made for creative or localization reasons, not due to external controversies.
Diddy Kong has appeared in numerous games since his debut, from his own racing series to Super Smash Bros., becoming a fan favorite along the way. His character design, with the iconic red cap and nimble movements, has remained consistently charming and family-friendly throughout the years.
The character’s enduring popularity, further evidenced by his recent cameo in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, suggests that his identity is firmly established in gaming culture. While some names might carry baggage in certain contexts, the gaming community seems to understand that correlation doesn’t equal causation.
In fact, Diddy Kong’s continued presence in Nintendo’s roster serves as a reminder that characters can transcend real-world associations, standing on their own merits rather than being defined by coincidental name similarities.
What do you think about this naming coincidence? Should fictional characters be renamed when their names become associated with controversial figures? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

***** Supersonic’s XB-1 aircraft set a new speed record during its latest test flight.
The Colorado company is working through a flight test program of the XB-1 supersonic demonstrator aircraft, which completed its most recent test flight on Nov. 5. This was the seventh out of 10 planned subsonic test flights to confirm XB-1’s performance and handling qualities before attempting to reach supersonic speeds.
During the Nov. 5 test flight, which lasted 55 minutes, XB-1 reached an altitude of 23,015 feet (7,015 meters) and a new top speed of 629 mph (1,012 kph). This means the aircraft reached Mach 0.82, marking a major milestone in its progress toward crossing the threshold of Mach 1 and breaking the sound barrier.
“XB-1, *****’s supersonic demonstrator aircraft, continues to progress toward Mach 1,” ***** Supersonic officials said in a statement releasing the results of the Nov. 5 test flight. “Flight seven focused on flutter envelope expansion and cockpit pressure testing in order to ensure safe performance and handling qualities as XB-1 approaches supersonic speeds and higher altitudes.”
XB-1 took its maiden flight earlier this year, on March 22. The fastest the aircraft had traveled in prior test flights was Mach 0.69.
a pilot in a flight helmet sits in a sleek silver jet with a sharp nose cone
During XB-1’s most recent flight, flutter excitement system (FES) tests were performed at Mach 0.7, 0.75, and 0.8. Flutter tests help ensure there are no undesirable interactions between the airflow around the vehicle and the structure of the aircraft at increasing speeds, according to the statement.
Having also reached its highest altitude yet, the team performed a final cockpit pressurization test at maximum pressure differential, demonstrating the aircraft is ready to proceed up to 30,000 ft (9,144 m) — the altitude at which XB-1 will fly when it reaches supersonic speeds, officials said.

“XB-1 continues to perform at progressively faster speeds and higher altitudes, expanding the flight envelope gradually to prepare the aircraft and team for breaking the sound barrier at Mach 1,” ***** Supersonic officials said in the statement.
The performance of XB-1 provides the foundation for the design and development of the company’s flagship project called Overture — a planned supersonic airliner aimed at making air travel much faster and more efficient.

Glover posts career-high as Phoenix rise over Taipans
Glover posts career-high as Phoenix rise over Taipans
Angus Glover’s hot hand has helped South East Melbourne continue their NBL resurgence with a commanding 97-74 win over the last-placed Cairns Taipans.
The Phoenix dominated the first ******* at John Cain Arena on Sunday as Glover sent down four triples, helping the home side to an early double-digit lead.
They were never headed, with Glover playing a key role with a game and career-high 22 points.
Matt Hurt (15), Jordan Hunter (14) and Nathan Sobey (14) also reached double figures, and import point-guard Derrick Walton Jnr had eight points off the bench on his return from injury.
South East Melbourne (5-7) are now 5-2 since parting ways with Mike Kelly after their horror 0-5 start to the season, charging back into finals contention under Josh King.
The result was a seventh straight defeat for Cairns (3-8), leaving Adam Forde’s side struggling at the bottom of the ladder.
Taran Armstrong returned from an ankle sprain for the Taipans, who were without suspended import Rob Edwards, but he couldn’t inspire a rare win.
Armstrong looked rusty at times with 11 points on 33 per cent *********, as well as five turnovers.
Sam Wardenburg (16 points) was dangerous in the first half but went quiet in the second and sat out most of the final quarter after a heavy hit from Phoenix centre Jordan Hunter.
The visitors unravelled midway through the fourth ******* when starting guard Jonah Antonio was hit with a quickfire pair of technical fouls and tossed out of the game.
Glover got off to a hot start when he landed 4-of-5 triples in the first *******, as South East Melbourne went a combined 8-of-13 from long range to break out to an early double-digit lead.
Wardenburg returned ***** at the other end with 13 first-quarter points, but the Phoenix led 34-20 at quarter-time.
Cairns’ improved defence got them back into the contest late in the second ******* as the home side’s lapses meant the advantage was cut to 49-40 at halftime.
But Wardenburg went scoreless in the third term and the Phoenix blew out to a game-high 16-point lead early in the final quarter before the situation got messy for the visitors.
Edwards served a one-game suspension for breaching the league’s code of conduct with his actions and comments towards referees after a game against Melbourne ******* in round six.

Massive grizzly bear known as ‘The Boss’ spotted in Canmore area
Massive grizzly bear known as ‘The Boss’ spotted in Canmore area

Massive grizzly bear “The Boss” seemed to have lost his bearings earlier this week.
He was spotted by a local nature photographer in the Canmore area, much farther east than he’s normally known to frequent.
The Boss, officially known as Bear No. 122, was seen Sunday where photographer and biologist Jason Leo Bantle lives in Harvie Heights, a hamlet just northwest of Canmore.
Parks Canada said The Boss is in his mid-20s, and the last time he was captured he weighed roughly 450 pounds (about 200 kilograms). The bear is regarded as possibly the largest in the Banff National Park area, his usual stomping grounds.
The grizzly has been through a lot over the years. He’s eaten a rival ****** bear and even survived being struck by a train. He’s missing a tuft of fur on his face and a chunk of his right ear, but he’s still likely the most dominant bear in and around the national park.

Blair Fyten, human wildlife coexistence specialist with Banff National Park, said Parks Canada wardens had to “shepherd” the bear away from Banff on Nov. 1 as it was trying to get into town, likely to find a crabapple tree it fed on last year.
That weekend The Boss was seen in Harvie Heights. Bantle said he saw a social media post with a photo of The Boss walking in front of his home.
Late Sunday afternoon, The Boss made his way further east to Canmore, where local peace officers along with the RCMP monitored the bear as it went through the neighbourhood.
The Town of Canmore said the grizzly didn’t appear aggressive and it wasn’t accessing any wildlife attractants.
Eventually the bear travelled back west, where it once again passed through Harvie Heights, feasting for hours, according to Bantle.
He said he was able to capture a few photos of what he dubbed “the patriarch of the Bow Valley” in his neighbourhood after it made its way back from Canmore.
He said several residents in his community were able to carefully watch the bruin from the safety of their vehicles as The Boss wandered around the hamlet foraging for the bear necessities — berries and apples — in preparation for hibernation.
“I think everybody was just in awe of this scene and he didn’t seem impacted by us. He was just doing his thing. And I think everyone just wanted to have an experience with a legend,” Bantle said.
Reflecting on his experiences photographing The Boss and seeing his images after they’ve been processed, Bantle said he became emotional.
“When you’re in the moment, you’re actually kind of lost,” he said, adding he contemplated how much longer the grizzly will be a living icon of the ********* wilderness.
“Just to have been in the presence of such a bear and to have such unique moments … it was really overwhelming.”
Fyten said The Boss is an older bear that normally spends most of his time west of the Banff townsite in the Lake Louise area and Kootenay National Park.
“This is the first time that I’m actually aware that he’s gone to the town of Canmore,” Fyten said.
He noted that this time of year is when bears are looking for as much food as possible to bulk up for their hibernation, which is a likely reason The Boss wandered so far.
He said The Boss was probably following the train tracks looking for peas, lentils and the odd animal carcass to feed on.
“A deer or something that’s been hit by the train and has wandered off into the woods and *****. And, you know, he comes across that, and that’s just a a huge food reward for a bear at this time of the year,” Fyten said.
The Boss was guided by Parks Canada wardens away from the town of Banff on Tuesday.
The bear was led toward his usual habitat by wildlife officials while several visitors to Banff watched from afar as the grizzly crossed the road near the Fenlands Recreation Centre.
“[We] got him out to the east side of town and on his merry way. And, you know, we haven’t heard or seen of him for a couple days,” Fyten said.
‘The Boss,’ officially known as Bear No. 122, usually hangs around Banff National Park.

Fyten added that when Parks Canada wardens have to intervene and encourage a bear to stay away from a town such as Banff, they often make lots of noise and ****** paintball guns loaded with compressed chalk.
“That ball breaks into a powder once it hits something. So you can hit the ground beside the bear and it kind of helps to direct them as to which way you want them to go,” Fyten said, adding that for the most part The Boss is accustomed to being guided away by Parks Canada wardens.
Fyten said it’s important for nature enthusiasts who want to catch a glimpse of The Boss or bears like him to stay safe and practise bear safety while out in Canada’s mountain parks.
“We encourage people to carry bear spray right through the wintertime because it is effective against cougars and elk,” he said.
“If you do encounter a bear … let them know you’re there and back off and get your bear spray out and be ready with it.”

Cooper Connolly: WA youngster has ODI appearance end early amid hit to finger
Cooper Connolly won’t forget his home international debut – but not for the reasons he’d like.
The Scarborough allrounder had his day cut short with what appeared to be a ****** finger injury after being struck while batting amid Australia’s woeful start against Pakistan at Optus Stadium.
Connolly attempted to pull a short delivery from Mohammad Hasnain, only to be hit on the left hand by the rising ball.
The 21-year-old immediately walked toward square leg and pulled off his glove, before being attended to by medical staff.
He was unable to continue and retired hurt for 7 – his first runs at international level having ******* to bat in his previous one-day international and two T20 internationals.

Connolly’s injury came amid a horror first hour-and-a-half for Australia, whose second-string line-up was woefully exposed by Pakistan’s quicks.
The Aussies were reduced to 5-79 – effectively six down with Connolly’s injury – due to a combination of poor shot selection and probing bowling from the tourists’ pace battery.
Australia entered the series-deciding match without seven players from their best ODI XI, with skipper Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne all rested after featuring earlier in the series. Mitch Marsh and Travis Head are also both unavailable.

Fusajiro Yamauchi, The Man Who Started $62.2 Billion Franchise With Playing Cards
Fusajiro Yamauchi, The Man Who Started $62.2 Billion Franchise With Playing Cards
Along with PlayStation and Xbox, another console that has become a staple in the gaming industry is Nintendo. This ********* company is again gearing up with the Switch 2, according to the rumors. The company will be focusing a lot on this console to carry forward the legacy of Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo is a popular console and game development company. | Credit: Nintendo.
However, this legacy was not built in just one day. The empire was set up by the legendary Fusajiro Yamauchi, which was just a playing-card game company and eventually went on to become a $62.2 billion gaming giant.
Nintendo: It All Started with Just Playing Cards by Fusajiro Yamauchi
Nintendo started as a playing cards company. | Credit: Nintendo
Businessman and craftsman Fusajiro Yamauchi was creating vibrantly ******** playing cards in his new offices, which were located down a small side street in the historic ********* city of Kyoto. The Hanafuda, or cards, were handcrafted and exquisitely ornamented. Mr. Yamauchi soon had to hire others to assist him in crafting them because they were so well-liked.
Mr. Yamauchi had no idea—and would never know—that his card shop, which opened on September 23, 1889, in the erstwhile Imperial Capital of Japan, would become one of the largest and most significant gaming firms in the world within a century.
Over the next 70 years, the Nintendo company skillfully created cards with symbols and images of nature. Each of the twelve suits of Hanafuda, or “flower cards,” represented a different month of the year.
They were inspired by both Western-style 52-deck playing cards and traditional ********* games. However, they used images on the cards rather than numbers. Nintendo’s cards gained popularity all over Japan. Yet, the vibrant images eventually came to be associated with gambling and the Yakuza gangsters. A zero score in the card game Oicho-Kabu is represented by the numbers ya-ku-za, or 8, 9, and 3, which is actually where the name “Yakuza” originates.
The First Step of Expanding the Venture
The first game on the platform was released in 1981. | Credit: Nintendo
Fusajiro Yamauchi’s great-grandson took over Nintendo in 1950 when he was just 22 years old. He gained a reputation as a passionate and occasionally frightening leader with an inventive mind. His goal was to grow the business to include toys and amusement arcades in addition to card manufacturing. Ironically, Hiroshi has only ever played one video game in his life and has never enjoyed it.
Nintendo artist Shigeru Miyamoto created a game that was revolutionary in 1981. Donkey Kong was the name of the game. The hero was a man in a red boiler suit with a small red hat, and the antagonist was a giant gorilla with an endless supply of barrels. Although he went by Jumpman, you may be more familiar with him as Mario, the Italian plumber. Donkey Kong became a global sensation and a popular arcade game.
Jumpman quickly changed his name. Mario Segale, the landlord of the warehouse where Nintendo’s ********* headquarters was located, served as the inspiration for his name. Nintendo developed new video games, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong Jr., in which Donkey Kong’s son must save his father from Mario’s grasp. Super Mario Bros. was a huge success, and Mario quickly gained international recognition.
The Rise of NES
NES made a revolution in the world of gaming. | Credit: Nintendo.
As a result of these games’ popularity, Nintendo also introduced the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES for short, a brand-new home gaming system. Two years after its initial introduction in Japan under the name Famicom, it made its way to US stores and contributed to the resurgence of the gaming industry.
Nintendo was able to create the technology necessary to launch the Game Boy, its first portable device, in 1989. Although the first handheld game console had been developed ten years prior, the Game Boy’s unique design and lengthy battery life made it popular.
It has produced numerous beloved characters and well-liked games over the last 30 years. In the 1998 game Ocarina of Time, Link from The Legend of Zelda became a cult figure. Luigi became a brother to Mario. Wario and Waluigi became their villainous alter-selves as a result.
After that, many popular consoles from the company like DS, Wii, Wii U, and last but not least Switch surfaced and made a special place amidst the console war. After that, the company never had to look back and see where they are today! The company is also gearing up for Switch 2. Let’s see if that console can take the legacy to newer heights.

Canada detects first presumptive human H5 bird flu case
Canada detects first presumptive human H5 bird flu case
Canada has detected its first presumptive case of H5 bird flu in a person – a teenager in the western province of British Columbia – health officials say.
The teenager likely caught the virus from a bird or animal and was receiving care at a children’s hospital, the province said in a statement.
The province said it was investigating the source of exposure and identifying the teenager’s contacts.
The risk to the public remained low, Canada’s Health Minister Mark Holland said in a post on X.
“This is a rare event,” British Columbia Health Officer Bonnie Henry said in a statement.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation to fully understand the source of exposure here in BC.”
H5 bird flu is widespread in wild birds worldwide and is causing outbreaks in poultry and US dairy cows, with several recent human cases in US dairy and poultry workers.
There has been no evidence of person-to-person spread so far but if that was to happen, a pandemic could unfold, scientists have said.
Earlier in November, the US ******** control centre asked for farm workers exposed to animals with bird flu to be tested for the virus even if they did not have symptoms.
Bird flu has infected almost 450 dairy farms in 15 US states since March, and the ******** control centre has identified 46 human cases of bird flu since April.
In Canada, British Columbia has identified at least 22 infected poultry farms since October and numerous wild birds tested positive, according to the province.
Canada has had no cases reported in dairy cattle and no evidence of bird flu in milk samples.

I’ve been testing Apple Intelligence — here’s 3 reasons why it’s worth upgrading to a new iPhone
I’ve been testing Apple Intelligence — here’s 3 reasons why it’s worth upgrading to a new iPhone
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission.
Credit: Tom’s Guide
If you’ve got an older iPhone and are prone to FOMO — that’s the ***** of missing out for us olds — the arrival of Apple Intelligence via updates to iOS 18 must feel like a trying moment. Maybe you weren’t considering an upgrade to the best iPhones before, but all the chatter around Apple’s suite of AI tools has you wondering if you might be passing up an opportunity to really improve your iPhone experience.
As I said when evaluating Apple Intelligence in the wake of the iOS 18.1 release, I don’t think the initial batch of AI features alone should prompt a rush of iPhone 16 upgrades, though that’s more about the strength of the phones themselves than a judgment on what Apple Intelligence delivers. All of the iPhone 16 models benefit from performance improvements, longer-lasting batteries and design flourishes like the Camera Capture button; the iPhone 16 Pro models in particular benefit from improved camera hardware. That’s the reason to upgrade, not because Apple Intelligence can now fine-tune your emails via the Writing Tools feature.
It’s also worth remembering that Apple Intelligence’s arrival will be an ongoing process, as evidenced by the fact that iOS 18.1 arrived just a couple of weeks ago, and we’re already packing the new additions appearing in the just-released iOS 18.2 beta. If you’re not sure about an iPhone upgrade this year, just wait — Apple Intelligence will still be there, and in better shape, when you are ready to get that new iPhone.
Still, the feeling that you’re missing out on something can be a powerful motivator. So if you’re still on the fence about getting a new iPhone and Apple Intelligence is the one factor that could push you into the upgrade column, here are the three reasons why it makes sense to ditch that older phone for a newer model that supports Apple Intelligence.
You spend a lot of time working with images on your phone
Clean Up tool in Photos app running on ios 18.1
If you find yourself ******* up the Photos app a lot — either because photography is a hobby, a side hustle or even how your bread and butter — Apple Intelligence has a lot to offer you. The Clean Up tool in Photos puts a new AI-powered editing feature at your disposal, letting you remove distracting objects or stray people from a photo with a tap. My colleague John Velasco put together a Clean Up vs. Magic Eraser face-off, and while Google’s editing tool has been around for several years, Clean Up has made a promising debut. Certainly, it’s a very intuitive photo-editing tool that really seems to understand what you’re trying to remove from an image.
You’ll also find Photos an easier app to navigate with Apple Intelligence, and I’m not just talking about the redesign Apple introduced for anyone who upgrades to iOS 18 (a redesign that I’ve grown to appreciate, by the way). Searching in Photos is vastly improved, as Apple now supports natural language search. Just type a description of the images you’re looking for, and the odds are pretty good that it will turn up in the search results.
iOS 18.2 adds other imaging tools, including the Image Playground and Genmoji. With both features, you’re using text prompts to generate images, whether it’s a new avatar for one of your contacts or an emoji that you can use in Messages. You’ve got to request early access to Image Playground, and as of this writing, there’s a multi-day wait ahead of you when you do make your request. But the image creation tools available available on your iPhone are expanding rapidly, and I can understand wanting to get in on the ground floor of that.
Serious Mail time-savers
A summary of an email in Apple Intelligence on an iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 18.1
Outside of Photos, no app on your iPhone has seen a greater Apple Intelligence-driven improvement than Apple’s own Mail client. If Mail is your go-to app for staying in touch and getting things done, there’s a lot to like in the updated version.
We’ll start with the fact that a priority mail feature floats your most important messages to top of the inbox These are messages with a deadline or call to action, and the new Mail app wants to make sure you act on them in a timely fashion. If you struggle to stay on top of your inbox, this will go a long way toward making sure you’re responding to key messages.
Summary features turn out to be a real time-saver, too, whether it’s the auto-generated summaries that appear in some messages in your inbox to give you the gist of what an email is about before you tap on it, or the summary tool that parses messages to highlight their key points. I especially like the latter, too, because it helps me sort through long email chains with multiple recipients weighing in. I can just summarize the entire string of message into a couple of key sentences that break down what’s been discussed, without having to peruse every single message.
iOS 18.2 introduces a new organization to Mail as well, splitting your inbox into different categories for primary mail, receipts and transactions, newsletters and promotions. (Note that this change isn’t Apple Intelligence-specific.) I’ve just started using iOS 18.2 so I don’t yet have a verdict on these changes, but they do seem to fall in line with the other productivity improvements Apple Intelligence has introduced so far.
You want a better Siri
Gif animation of new Siri with Apple Intelligence animation.
Apple has big plans for Siri, as it uses Apple Intelligence to make its digital assistant smarter and more responsive. Eventually, the plan is for Siri to be aware of what’s on your iPhone screen, put that information in context and form responses based on that information — but we’re a long way from that, as Mark Spoonauer’s new Siri vs. old Siri testing indicates.
Of all the features I tested while putting iOS 18.1 through its paces, Siri has the most work ahead of it. iOS 18.2 looks like a crucial step forward by adding ChatGPT integration to Apple’s digital assistant, which at the very least, has enhanced the conversational capabilities of Siri, according to my colleagues who’ve spent more time with this feature.
I turn to Siri for the basics at the moment, but if you’re more heavily invested in the digital assistant’s evolution into a more powerful part of the iPhone experience, you’ll likely want to be a part of that progress. And that could be reason enough for you to get an iPhone that’s capable of supporting the Apple Intelligence-powered version of Siri.
