On Wednesday, Vivian Jenna Wilson, Musk’s 20-year-old transgender daughter, wrote on Threads that Donald Trump’s re-election had convinced her to move abroad—something she’d been mulling for a while now. Musk responded by writing on X, the social media platform he owns, “The woke mind virus ******* my son,” a line he has repeated several times to “explain” his opposition to puberty blockers. “So, you’re still going with the ****-story about how ‘Woe is me, my child was infected by something-or-other and that’s totally the reason they hate me,’” Wilson shot back on Threads on Thursday. She went on to say the reason why Musk responded specifically to a report about her leaving the country was because he was **** he didn’t have any power over her. “At the end of the day, everyone around you knows you as a delusional and grubby little control freak who hasn’t matured as a person for 38 years,” she wrote. It’s not the first time Wilson, 20, has accused her father of being immature and controlling. When Musk made a skin-crawling offer to “give” Taylor Swift a child after she endorsed Kamala Harris for president, Wilson described the comment as “heinous incel nonsense.” The two have been estranged since Wilson cut ties in 2022, according to a Walter Isaacson biography about the billionaire owner of X. Musk shares 12 children with three women—a scenario that smacks of womb envy—and Wilson says he is an absent father and “serial adulterer.” (Isaacson’s biography confirmed the SpaceX chief fathered secret twins while still in a relationship with the singer Grimes.) Earlier this week, news broke that Musk and Grimes were house hunting for a mansion for the former couple to share with some of Musk’s other children and their mother. Grimes and Musk had been battling for custody of their three young children since 2022, with Musk allegedly withholding the children from Grimes as recently as July. If those reports are true, it does prompt the question of whose idea it was to do a “Scientology, the Sequel” arrangement, as Wilson put it. With just a year left on the midfielder’s contract, Chelsea and Maresca found themselves between a rock and a hard place. Coming the other way was Joao Felix, who returned to the Blues having spent an unsuccessful loan spell there in 2023, but on much lower wages and a seven-year deal. “I don’t do miracles,” is one of Maresca’s favourite sayings, and you can imagine him pointing that out about a player who has struggled to fulfil their potential. The club though, were convinced he could be useful and that Maresca’s detailed work would make him better. Eventually the coach accepted the challenge. Felix was an exception to the rule. The Chelsea model works on the basis that their potential stars – young players with huge qualities – are paid a fixed sum plus performance-related incentives. The new ownership say they do not want to be hamstrung by high wages as the previous regime were. It is all about trying to build a sustainable model for the long-term that allows players who impress to be rewarded with extensions and more money, as Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer got in their new contracts, while allowing the club to move on those who underperform, easier to do when they are on average Premier League wages. Enzo Fernandez, for example, was signed from Benfica in January 2023 for £107m – but on a nine-and-a-half-year contract. The deal was certainly an upgrade on what the midfielder was earning at Benfica, but still said to be nowhere near what he could have earned elsewhere. Chelsea’s owners say the long contracts are not given with a view to try to amortise the value of a player over a number of years, but rather to build the right model to make the club sustainable, including the shaping of a squad that can be together for years. It does not matter how much a player costs, but they have to come with one big condition – to have the right background, character and ability to be team players. Maresca, identified by the club to guide them for the next decade, can have any player he wants as long as they are under the age of 24 and willing to commit to the team long-term. He wants two players for every position as a bare minimum and, with that now in place, he does not envisage signing more than two or three each transfer window. To outsiders, one of the most impressive things Maresca has done is stabilise a squad that was seen as being hugely inflated, with talk of in excess of 45 players. The manager though has a first-team squad of 23 and that is what he has dealt with since day one. Many clubs will have a squad of about 18 of their strongest players with the remaining numbers made of youngsters. Chelsea have added one or two more because of the schedule this season, which could see them playing 70 matches across four competitions, plus the Club World Cup. Chelsea believe talk of an oversized squad was also exaggerated, because it included players who have suffered mid to long-term injuries, those who have been pre-signed with a view to the future and others who don’t fit into Maresca’s plan and will be moved on. These arguments have been raging for decades with no clear winner, for each destination has its diehard fans. Now, the same battlelines are being drawn in Vietnam. In one corner is the south with its buzzing metropolis Saigon, beach resorts, tropical islands and year-round hot weather. It’s the clear winner in terms of visitor numbers. In 2023 Saigon welcomed 40 million tourists compared to 24 million in Hanoi, the capital in the north. But for some, the crowds in the south are reason enough to head north, where the pace is slower. Here are five other reasons to visit northern Vietnam. THE STREET FOOD OF HANOI In Hanoi, there are hundreds of restaurants selling pho, Vietnam’s famous rice noodles and beef soup. The most famous is Pho Thin on Lu Doc Street in Hanoi French’s Quarter which charges only $4 for a square meal. It’s not the cleanest restaurant in the city, but their secret recipe can’t be beaten. La vong fish is another must-try dish in Hanoi. Made using a species of catfish from the Red River revered for its soft aromatic flesh, it’s sliced into thin fillets, marinated in turmeric and grilled on skewers. The city’s most famous la vong restaurant, Cha Ca Thang La Vong, is on Cha Ca Street. They only serve one dish. Then there’s bun cha, a hearty lunch of grilled patties served over rice noodles and a sweet and sour broth. Traditionally bun cha was a workers’ lunch — a quick meal sold at truck stops and street stalls. But it became a global food sensation in 2015 after Barack Obama and the late Anthony Bourdain ate at Bun Cha Huong Lien, a family-run eatery on Le Van Hu Street, also in the French Quarter. VIETNAM’S HIMALAYAS Until 2013, Ha Giang, a mountainous district bordering China in Vietnam’s north-east, was a military zone. To visit, foreigners required special permits that were difficult to get. Today, anyone can travel to Ha Giang. The road is mind-blowing: an endless array of hairpin turns that snake up mountain passes and sashay across valleys, with scenery cut straight out of the Himalayas. The journey ends at ***** Van, a French colonial town on a 1600m-high plateau. Tourists stay in the Old Quarter, a maze-like warren of cobblestoned alleyways and flagstone buildings topped with terracotta tiles. The oldest — a terrace with two stone pillar supports adorned with red lanterns — was built by the Luong family 200 years ago and is still inhabited by their descendants. THE BALI OF VIETNAM In 1946, Vietnam took up arms against the French colonial government, which had ruled the country with an iron fist for more than 80 years. The showdown occurred at Dien Bien Phu, a strategically important hill set in a valley in north-west Vietnam. The Vietnamese won by carrying hundreds of heavy cannons, piece by piece, up the mountains surrounding the valley, and rained ***** on the unsuspecting French down below. Today Dien Bien Phu is a big city with a gigantic *******-style sculpture on the hill to commemorate the battle. The city is nothing to write home about but the lush green countryside around it, inhabited by friendly hill tribes, is as beautiful as Bali. Set on a winding brook among cherry blossom trees, Muong Phang village, 30km east of Dien Bien Phu City, has three or four little homestays. It is half an hour by bicycle to the former underground hideout of General Vo Nguyen Giap, the mastermind of the battle of Dien Bien Phu. MUSEUMS GALORE The century-old hotel Sofitel Metropole in Hanoi is a living museum with hundreds of antiques. Hotel guests can join guided tours of rebel tunnels discovered under the building. The Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street showcases hundreds of thought-provoking folk paintings about communism, patriotism and agriculture. And don’t miss the Vietnam Military History Museum on Dien Bien Phu Street. Its courtyard is crammed with damaged tanks, B-52 ********, Russian jets and ********* choppers. Set in a space-age building that seems to hover over the hill, the Museum of Dien Bien Phu Victory in Dien Bien Phu City tells the story of Vietnam’s victory over the French. About 15km from ***** Van in Ha Giang Province is the Palace of the Hmong King. Built in 1902, the fortress-turned-museum has 5m-thick stone walls and 64 bedrooms, where the king’s many wives and children lived. THE SECRET ISLAND With limestone karst formations that rise from the sea like giant chess pieces, Ha Long Bay, a three-hour drive from Hanoi, is the most popular destination in northern Vietnam. The conventional way to see it is on a multi-day cruise. But there’s a more immersive and less expensive way to experience Ha Long Bay: by spending a few days at Cat Ba Island, a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. With cloud-ringed mountains and valleys pockmarked with karsts, Cat Ba looks like the birthplace of King Kong. The most recent adaptation of the legend — Skull Island — was shot here in 2016. Trump turned it to dust Getty Images Donald Trump swept to victory on Tuesday by chipping away at groups of voters which Democrats once believed would help them win the White House for a generation. After Barack Obama’s victory in 2008, many triumphantly claimed that the ******** voting coalition which had elected the first ****** president was growing more powerful, as the makeup of America changed. Older, white conservatives were dying off, and non-white Americans were projected to be in the majority by 2044. College-educated professionals, younger people, *******, Latinos and other ******* minorities, and blue-collar workers were part of a “coalition of the ascendant”. These voters were left-leaning on cultural issues and supportive of an active federal government and a strong social safety net. And they constituted a majority in enough states to ensure a Democratic lock on the Electoral College – and the presidency. “Demography,” these left-wing optimists liked to say, “is destiny.” Sixteen years later, however, that destiny appears to have turned to dust. Cracks began forming when non-college educated voters slipped away from the Democrats in midterm elections in 2010 and 2014. They then broke en masse to Trump in 2016. While Joe Biden, with his working-class-friendly reputation built over half a century, won enough back to take the White House in 2020, his success proved to be only a temporary reprieve. This year, Trump supplemented his gains with the blue-collar workers by also cutting into the Democratic margins among young, Latino and ****** voters. He has carved up the coalition of the ascendant. According to exit polls, Trump won: – 13% of the ****** vote in 2024 compared to *********** John McCain’s 4% against Obama – 46% of the Latino vote this time, while McCain got 31% in 2008 – 43% of voters under 30 against the 32% for McCain – 56% of those without a college degree – back in 2008, it was Obama who won a majority Speaking on Thursday after his comeback victory, Trump celebrated his own diverse coalition of voters. “I started to see realignment could happen because the Democrats are not in line with the thinking of the country,” the president-elect told NBC News. Immigration and identity politics Trump did it with a hard-line message on immigration that included border enforcement and mass deportations – policies that Biden and the Democrats recoiled from when they took power back from Trump in 2021, lest they anger immigrant rights activists in their ******** base. ******** border crossings reached record levels under the Biden administration, with more than eight million encounters with migrants at the border with Mexico. “If you watch a video from Hillary Clinton back in 2008 in the primaries, she talks about making sure there’s wall-building, making sure that that immigrants who violate the law get deported, making sure everybody learns English,” said Kevin Marino Cabrera, a *********** commissioner in Miami-Dade County. “It’s funny how far to the left [the Democrats] have gone.” This week, Trump became the first *********** since 1988 to win that heavily Latino county in Florida. He also won Starr County in south Texas, with its 97% Latino population, with 57% of the vote. In 2008, only 15% of the county voted for McCain, the ***********. Mike Madrid, an anti-Trump *********** strategist who specialises in Latino voting trends, told the BBC that the problem with “demography is destiny” was that it risked treating all non-white Americans as an “aggrieved ******* *********”. “But that is not and nor has it ever been the way Latinos have viewed themselves,” he added. “I hate that if you’re ******, you’ve got to be a Democrat or you hate ****** people and you hate your community,” Kenard Holmes, a 20-year-old student in South Carolina, told the BBC during the presidential primaries earlier this year. He said he agreed with Republicans on some things and felt Democratic politicians took ****** voters for granted. With some states still tabulating their results, Trump currently has improved on his electoral margins in at least 2,367 US counties, while slipping in just 240. It wasn’t just the number of counties that Trump won that made a difference, either. Kamala Harris needed to post significant margins in the cities to offset *********** strength in rural areas. She consistently fell short. In Detroit’s Wayne County, for example, which the latest US Census reports is 38% ******, Harris won 63% of the vote – significantly lower than Joe Biden’s 68% in 2020 and Obama’s 74% in 2008. Polls consistently suggested that the economy, along with immigration, were the two issues of highest importance to voters – and where polls indicated Trump had an advantage over Harris. US voters on one reason Trump won… and why Harris lost The Democratic blame game begins Democrats are already engaged in considerable soul-searching, as they come to grips with an election defeat that has delivered the White House, the Senate and, perhaps, the House of Representatives to *********** control. Various elements within the party are offering their own, often conflicting, advice on the best path from the wilderness back to power. Left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders, who twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, also criticised identity politics and accused the party of abandoning working-class voters. Some centrist Democrats, meanwhile, have argued that the struggle to connect with voters goes beyond the economy and immigration. They point to how the Trump campaign was also able to use a cultural message as a wedge to fracture the Democratic coalition. Among the positions that Republicans targeted in this year’s election were calls to shift funding away from law enforcement, decriminalise undocumented border-crossings and minor ******* like shoplifting, and provide greater protections for transgender Americans. Many arose after the ******* of George Floyd in 2020 and the resulting rise of the ****** Lives Matter movement, as well as other efforts to advance social justice and acknowledge darker parts of ********* history. Within a few years, however, some of those positions proved a liability for Democrats when trying to win over persuadable voters and keep their coalition from fraying. Harris, for example, backed away from some positions she’d taken when she first ran for president in 2019. What does MAGA mean to these Trump supporters? In the last month of the presidential campaign, the Trump team made the vice-president’s past support for taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries for federal prisoners and detained immigrants a central focus. One advert ended with the line: “Kamala is for they/them. President Trump is for you.” The Trump campaign spent more than $21m on transgender issue ads in the first half of October – about a third of their entire advertising expenditures and nearly double what they spent on spots on immigration and inflation, according to data compiled by AdImpact. It’s the kind of investment a campaign makes if it has hard data showing an advert is moving public opinion. After Trump’s convincing win, Congressman Seth Moulton, a moderate from Massachusetts, said his party needed to rethink its approach on cultural issues. “Democrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges many Americans face,” Moulton told the New York Times. “I have two little ******, I don’t want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.” Progressive Democrats, meanwhile, ******* that characterisation, and argue that standing up for the rights of minorities has always been a core value of the party. Congressman John Moran wrote on X in response: “You should find another job if you want to use an election loss as an opportunity to pick on our most vulnerable.” Mike Madrid, the political strategist, has a brutal assessment of where the Democratic coalition is today. “The Democratic Party was predicated on what really is an unholy alliance between working-class people of colour and wealthier white progressives driven and animated by cultural issues,” Madrid said. “The only glue holding that coalition together was anti-Republicanism.” Once that glue came unstuck, he said, the party was ripe for defeat. Future elections are sure to be held in a friendlier political environment for Democrats. And Trump, who has shown a unique ability to attract new and low-propensity voters to the polls, has run his last campaign. But 2024’s results will provide plenty of fuel for Democratic angst in the days to come. The Harris campaign itself believes she lost to Trump because she was facing a restive public ****** over the economic and social turbulence in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic. “You stared down unprecedented headwinds and obstacles that were largely out of our control,” campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon wrote in a letter to her staff. “The whole country moved to the right, but compared to the rest of the country, the battleground states saw the least amount of movement in his direction. But when he spoke to the BBC this week, he was not so convinced the Democrats had delivered when in power – or that their message today connected with Americans like him. “You know, Joe Biden promised a lot of progressive things, like he was going to cancel student debt, he was going to help people get their citizenship,” he said. “And none of that happened. The COP29 climate summit, which opens in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku on Monday, will be among the highest-profile multilateral events attended by Taliban administration officials since they took control in Kabul after 20 years of fighting NATO-backed forces. The UN has not allowed the Taliban to take up Afghanistan’s seat at the General Assembly, and Afghanistan’s government is not formally recognised by UN member states, largely due to the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s education and freedom of movement. Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi said officials from the National Environmental Protection Agency had arrived in Azerbaijan to attend the COP conference. The Taliban took over the agency when they returned to power when US-led forces withdrew. Taliban officials have taken part in UN-organised meetings on Afghanistan in Doha, and Taliban ministers have attended forums in China and Central Asia in the past two years. But the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Bureau of the COP has deferred consideration of Afghanistan’s participation since 2021, in effect freezing the country out of the talks. Because the Taliban are not formally recognised within the UN system as the legitimate government of Afghanistan, the source said, the officials cannot receive credentials to take part in the proceedings of full member states. Azerbaijan’s presidency declined to comment. The Taliban has closed schools and universities to female students older than the age of about 12. It also announced a set of wide-ranging morality laws earlier in 2024 that require women to cover their faces in public and restrict their travel outside the home without a male guardian. The Taliban says it respects women’s rights in accordance with its interpretation of Islamic law. Afghanistan is considered one of the countries worst affected by climate change.
