  1. Massive grizzly bear known as ‘The Boss’ spotted in Canmore area Massive grizzly bear known as ‘The Boss’ spotted in Canmore area ‘The Boss,’ a massive grizzly bear that usually can be seen around Banff National Park, was spotted in the Canmore area by a local wildlife photographer. (Jason Leo Bantle – image credit) Massive grizzly bear “The Boss” seemed to have lost his bearings earlier this week. He was spotted by a local nature photographer in the Canmore area, much farther east than he’s normally known to frequent. The Boss, officially known as Bear No. 122, was seen Sunday where photographer and biologist Jason Leo Bantle lives in Harvie Heights, a hamlet just northwest of Canmore. Parks Canada said The Boss is in his mid-20s, and the last time he was captured he weighed roughly 450 pounds (about 200 kilograms). The bear is regarded as possibly the largest in the Banff National Park area, his usual stomping grounds. The grizzly has been through a lot over the years. He’s eaten a rival ****** bear and even survived being struck by a train. He’s missing a tuft of fur on his face and a chunk of his right ear, but he’s still likely the most dominant bear in and around the national park. ‘The Boss,’ a massive grizzly bear that usually can be seen around Banff National Park, was spotted in the Canmore area by a local wildlife photographer. The Boss, a huge grizzly bear usually seen around Banff National Park, was spotted in the Canmore area recently by a local wildlife photographer. (Jason Leo Bantle) Blair Fyten, human wildlife coexistence specialist with Banff National Park, said Parks Canada wardens had to “shepherd” the bear away from Banff on Nov. 1 as it was trying to get into town, likely to find a crabapple tree it fed on last year. That weekend The Boss was seen in Harvie Heights. Bantle said he saw a social media post with a photo of The Boss walking in front of his home. Late Sunday afternoon, The Boss made his way further east to Canmore, where local peace officers along with the RCMP monitored the bear as it went through the neighbourhood. The Town of Canmore said the grizzly didn’t appear aggressive and it wasn’t accessing any wildlife attractants. Eventually the bear travelled back west, where it once again passed through Harvie Heights, feasting for hours, according to Bantle. He said he was able to capture a few photos of what he dubbed “the patriarch of the Bow Valley” in his neighbourhood after it made its way back from Canmore. He said several residents in his community were able to carefully watch the bruin from the safety of their vehicles as The Boss wandered around the hamlet foraging for the bear necessities — berries and apples — in preparation for hibernation. “I think everybody was just in awe of this scene and he didn’t seem impacted by us. He was just doing his thing. And I think everyone just wanted to have an experience with a legend,” Bantle said. Reflecting on his experiences photographing The Boss and seeing his images after they’ve been processed, Bantle said he became emotional. “When you’re in the moment, you’re actually kind of lost,” he said, adding he contemplated how much longer the grizzly will be a living icon of the ********* wilderness. “Just to have been in the presence of such a bear and to have such unique moments … it was really overwhelming.” Fyten said The Boss is an older bear that normally spends most of his time west of the Banff townsite in the Lake Louise area and Kootenay National Park. “This is the first time that I’m actually aware that he’s gone to the town of Canmore,” Fyten said. He noted that this time of year is when bears are looking for as much food as possible to bulk up for their hibernation, which is a likely reason The Boss wandered so far. He said The Boss was probably following the train tracks looking for peas, lentils and the odd animal carcass to feed on. “A deer or something that’s been hit by the train and has wandered off into the woods and *****. And, you know, he comes across that, and that’s just a a huge food reward for a bear at this time of the year,” Fyten said. The Boss was guided by Parks Canada wardens away from the town of Banff on Tuesday. The bear was led toward his usual habitat by wildlife officials while several visitors to Banff watched from afar as the grizzly crossed the road near the Fenlands Recreation Centre. “[We] got him out to the east side of town and on his merry way. And, you know, we haven’t heard or seen of him for a couple days,” Fyten said. ‘The Boss,’ officially known as Bear No. 122, usually hangs around Banff National Park. The Boss, officially known as Bear No. 122, is thought to be the largest grizzly in Banff National Park. (Jason Leo Bantle) Fyten added that when Parks Canada wardens have to intervene and encourage a bear to stay away from a town such as Banff, they often make lots of noise and ****** paintball guns loaded with compressed chalk. “That ball breaks into a powder once it hits something. So you can hit the ground beside the bear and it kind of helps to direct them as to which way you want them to go,” Fyten said, adding that for the most part The Boss is accustomed to being guided away by Parks Canada wardens. Fyten said it’s important for nature enthusiasts who want to catch a glimpse of The Boss or bears like him to stay safe and practise bear safety while out in Canada’s mountain parks. “We encourage people to carry bear spray right through the wintertime because it is effective against cougars and elk,” he said. “If you do encounter a bear … let them know you’re there and back off and get your bear spray out and be ready with it.” To learn more about bear safety, visit Parks Canada’s website. Cooper Connolly: WA youngster has ODI appearance end early amid hit to finger Cooper Connolly: WA youngster has ODI appearance end early amid hit to finger Cooper Connolly won’t forget his home international debut – but not for the reasons he’d like. The Scarborough allrounder had his day cut short with what appeared to be a ****** finger injury after being struck while batting amid Australia’s woeful start against Pakistan at Optus Stadium. Connolly attempted to pull a short delivery from Mohammad Hasnain, only to be hit on the left hand by the rising ball. The 21-year-old immediately walked toward square leg and pulled off his glove, before being attended to by medical staff. He was unable to continue and retired hurt for 7 – his first runs at international level having ******* to bat in his previous one-day international and two T20 internationals. The Aussies were reduced to 5-79 – effectively six down with Connolly’s injury – due to a combination of poor shot selection and probing bowling from the tourists’ pace battery. Australia entered the series-deciding match without seven players from their best ODI XI, with skipper Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne all rested after featuring earlier in the series. Mitch Marsh and Travis Head are also both unavailable. Source link #Cooper #Connolly #youngster #ODI #appearance #early #hit #finger Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  4. Fusajiro Yamauchi, The Man Who Started $62.2 Billion Franchise With Playing Cards Fusajiro Yamauchi, The Man Who Started $62.2 Billion Franchise With Playing Cards Along with PlayStation and Xbox, another console that has become a staple in the gaming industry is Nintendo. This ********* company is again gearing up with the Switch 2, according to the rumors. The company will be focusing a lot on this console to carry forward the legacy of Nintendo Switch. Nintendo is a popular console and game development company. | Credit: Nintendo. However, this legacy was not built in just one day. The empire was set up by the legendary Fusajiro Yamauchi, which was just a playing-card game company and eventually went on to become a $62.2 billion gaming giant. Nintendo: It All Started with Just Playing Cards by Fusajiro Yamauchi Nintendo started as a playing cards company. | Credit: Nintendo Businessman and craftsman Fusajiro Yamauchi was creating vibrantly ******** playing cards in his new offices, which were located down a small side street in the historic ********* city of Kyoto. The Hanafuda, or cards, were handcrafted and exquisitely ornamented. Mr. Yamauchi soon had to hire others to assist him in crafting them because they were so well-liked. Mr. Yamauchi had no idea—and would never know—that his card shop, which opened on September 23, 1889, in the erstwhile Imperial Capital of Japan, would become one of the largest and most significant gaming firms in the world within a century. Over the next 70 years, the Nintendo company skillfully created cards with symbols and images of nature. Each of the twelve suits of Hanafuda, or “flower cards,” represented a different month of the year. They were inspired by both Western-style 52-deck playing cards and traditional ********* games. However, they used images on the cards rather than numbers. Nintendo’s cards gained popularity all over Japan. Yet, the vibrant images eventually came to be associated with gambling and the Yakuza gangsters. A zero score in the card game Oicho-Kabu is represented by the numbers ya-ku-za, or 8, 9, and 3, which is actually where the name “Yakuza” originates. The First Step of Expanding the Venture The first game on the platform was released in 1981. | Credit: Nintendo Fusajiro Yamauchi’s great-grandson took over Nintendo in 1950 when he was just 22 years old. He gained a reputation as a passionate and occasionally frightening leader with an inventive mind. His goal was to grow the business to include toys and amusement arcades in addition to card manufacturing. Ironically, Hiroshi has only ever played one video game in his life and has never enjoyed it. Nintendo artist Shigeru Miyamoto created a game that was revolutionary in 1981. Donkey Kong was the name of the game. The hero was a man in a red boiler suit with a small red hat, and the antagonist was a giant gorilla with an endless supply of barrels. Although he went by Jumpman, you may be more familiar with him as Mario, the Italian plumber. Donkey Kong became a global sensation and a popular arcade game. Jumpman quickly changed his name. Mario Segale, the landlord of the warehouse where Nintendo’s ********* headquarters was located, served as the inspiration for his name. Nintendo developed new video games, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong Jr., in which Donkey Kong’s son must save his father from Mario’s grasp. Super Mario Bros. was a huge success, and Mario quickly gained international recognition. The Rise of NES NES made a revolution in the world of gaming. | Credit: Nintendo. As a result of these games’ popularity, Nintendo also introduced the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES for short, a brand-new home gaming system. Two years after its initial introduction in Japan under the name Famicom, it made its way to US stores and contributed to the resurgence of the gaming industry. Nintendo was able to create the technology necessary to launch the Game Boy, its first portable device, in 1989. Although the first handheld game console had been developed ten years prior, the Game Boy’s unique design and lengthy battery life made it popular. It has produced numerous beloved characters and well-liked games over the last 30 years. In the 1998 game Ocarina of Time, Link from The Legend of Zelda became a cult figure. Luigi became a brother to Mario. Wario and Waluigi became their villainous alter-selves as a result. After that, many popular consoles from the company like DS, Wii, Wii U, and last but not least Switch surfaced and made a special place amidst the console war. After that, the company never had to look back and see where they are today! The company is also gearing up for Switch 2. Let’s see if that console can take the legacy to newer heights. 5. Canada detects first presumptive human H5 bird flu case Canada detects first presumptive human H5 bird flu case Canada has detected its first presumptive case of H5 bird flu in a person – a teenager in the western province of British Columbia – health officials say. The teenager likely caught the virus from a bird or animal and was receiving care at a children’s hospital, the province said in a statement. The province said it was investigating the source of exposure and identifying the teenager’s contacts. The risk to the public remained low, Canada’s Health Minister Mark Holland said in a post on X. “This is a rare event,” British Columbia Health Officer Bonnie Henry said in a statement. “We are conducting a thorough investigation to fully understand the source of exposure here in BC.” H5 bird flu is widespread in wild birds worldwide and is causing outbreaks in poultry and US dairy cows, with several recent human cases in US dairy and poultry workers. There has been no evidence of person-to-person spread so far but if that was to happen, a pandemic could unfold, scientists have said. Earlier in November, the US ******** control centre asked for farm workers exposed to animals with bird flu to be tested for the virus even if they did not have symptoms. Bird flu has infected almost 450 dairy farms in 15 US states since March, and the ******** control centre has identified 46 human cases of bird flu since April. In Canada, British Columbia has identified at least 22 infected poultry farms since October and numerous wild birds tested positive, according to the province. Canada has had no cases reported in dairy cattle and no evidence of bird flu in milk samples. 6. I’ve been testing Apple Intelligence — here’s 3 reasons why it’s worth upgrading to a new iPhone I’ve been testing Apple Intelligence — here’s 3 reasons why it’s worth upgrading to a new iPhone When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Tom’s Guide If you’ve got an older iPhone and are prone to FOMO — that’s the ***** of missing out for us olds — the arrival of Apple Intelligence via updates to iOS 18 must feel like a trying moment. Maybe you weren’t considering an upgrade to the best iPhones before, but all the chatter around Apple’s suite of AI tools has you wondering if you might be passing up an opportunity to really improve your iPhone experience. As I said when evaluating Apple Intelligence in the wake of the iOS 18.1 release, I don’t think the initial batch of AI features alone should prompt a rush of iPhone 16 upgrades, though that’s more about the strength of the phones themselves than a judgment on what Apple Intelligence delivers. All of the iPhone 16 models benefit from performance improvements, longer-lasting batteries and design flourishes like the Camera Capture button; the iPhone 16 Pro models in particular benefit from improved camera hardware. That’s the reason to upgrade, not because Apple Intelligence can now fine-tune your emails via the Writing Tools feature. It’s also worth remembering that Apple Intelligence’s arrival will be an ongoing process, as evidenced by the fact that iOS 18.1 arrived just a couple of weeks ago, and we’re already packing the new additions appearing in the just-released iOS 18.2 beta. If you’re not sure about an iPhone upgrade this year, just wait — Apple Intelligence will still be there, and in better shape, when you are ready to get that new iPhone. Still, the feeling that you’re missing out on something can be a powerful motivator. So if you’re still on the fence about getting a new iPhone and Apple Intelligence is the one factor that could push you into the upgrade column, here are the three reasons why it makes sense to ditch that older phone for a newer model that supports Apple Intelligence. You spend a lot of time working with images on your phone Clean Up tool in Photos app running on ios 18.1 If you find yourself ******* up the Photos app a lot — either because photography is a hobby, a side hustle or even how your bread and butter — Apple Intelligence has a lot to offer you. The Clean Up tool in Photos puts a new AI-powered editing feature at your disposal, letting you remove distracting objects or stray people from a photo with a tap. My colleague John Velasco put together a Clean Up vs. Magic Eraser face-off, and while Google’s editing tool has been around for several years, Clean Up has made a promising debut. Certainly, it’s a very intuitive photo-editing tool that really seems to understand what you’re trying to remove from an image. You’ll also find Photos an easier app to navigate with Apple Intelligence, and I’m not just talking about the redesign Apple introduced for anyone who upgrades to iOS 18 (a redesign that I’ve grown to appreciate, by the way). Searching in Photos is vastly improved, as Apple now supports natural language search. Just type a description of the images you’re looking for, and the odds are pretty good that it will turn up in the search results. iOS 18.2 adds other imaging tools, including the Image Playground and Genmoji. With both features, you’re using text prompts to generate images, whether it’s a new avatar for one of your contacts or an emoji that you can use in Messages. You’ve got to request early access to Image Playground, and as of this writing, there’s a multi-day wait ahead of you when you do make your request. But the image creation tools available available on your iPhone are expanding rapidly, and I can understand wanting to get in on the ground floor of that. Serious Mail time-savers A summary of an email in Apple Intelligence on an iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 18.1 Outside of Photos, no app on your iPhone has seen a greater Apple Intelligence-driven improvement than Apple’s own Mail client. If Mail is your go-to app for staying in touch and getting things done, there’s a lot to like in the updated version. We’ll start with the fact that a priority mail feature floats your most important messages to top of the inbox These are messages with a deadline or call to action, and the new Mail app wants to make sure you act on them in a timely fashion. If you struggle to stay on top of your inbox, this will go a long way toward making sure you’re responding to key messages. Summary features turn out to be a real time-saver, too, whether it’s the auto-generated summaries that appear in some messages in your inbox to give you the gist of what an email is about before you tap on it, or the summary tool that parses messages to highlight their key points. I especially like the latter, too, because it helps me sort through long email chains with multiple recipients weighing in. I can just summarize the entire string of message into a couple of key sentences that break down what’s been discussed, without having to peruse every single message. iOS 18.2 introduces a new organization to Mail as well, splitting your inbox into different categories for primary mail, receipts and transactions, newsletters and promotions. (Note that this change isn’t Apple Intelligence-specific.) I’ve just started using iOS 18.2 so I don’t yet have a verdict on these changes, but they do seem to fall in line with the other productivity improvements Apple Intelligence has introduced so far. You want a better Siri Gif animation of new Siri with Apple Intelligence animation. Apple has big plans for Siri, as it uses Apple Intelligence to make its digital assistant smarter and more responsive. Eventually, the plan is for Siri to be aware of what’s on your iPhone screen, put that information in context and form responses based on that information — but we’re a long way from that, as Mark Spoonauer’s new Siri vs. old Siri testing indicates. Of all the features I tested while putting iOS 18.1 through its paces, Siri has the most work ahead of it. iOS 18.2 looks like a crucial step forward by adding ChatGPT integration to Apple’s digital assistant, which at the very least, has enhanced the conversational capabilities of Siri, according to my colleagues who’ve spent more time with this feature. I turn to Siri for the basics at the moment, but if you’re more heavily invested in the digital assistant’s evolution into a more powerful part of the iPhone experience, you’ll likely want to be a part of that progress. And that could be reason enough for you to get an iPhone that’s capable of supporting the Apple Intelligence-powered version of Siri. 8. ‘The Worst Idea I’ve Ever Heard In My Life,’ Suze Orman Responds To Listener About Selling Everything Within IRA And Reinvesting ‘The Worst Idea I’ve Ever Heard In My Life,’ Suze Orman Responds To Listener About Selling Everything Within IRA And Reinvesting Suze Orman had some strong words for a listener who considered drastically changing her IRA’s investment strategy. In a recent episode of the Women & Money podcast, a listener named Jane shared her concerns about the current state of the market and asked Orman if it would be smart to sell all her current IRA investments. Don’t Miss: Jane said the idea behind this would be to place the proceeds into a money-market fund within the IRA, then dollar-cost average back into the market over time, assuming prices might decline shortly. Orman responded directly: “It’s the worst idea I’ve ever heard in my life.” “Jane, don’t do it,” KT, Orman’s wife and co-host, echoed Orman’s sentiments. They quickly explained why they advised against this strategy. The biggest flaw in Jane’s idea, according to Orman, was her assumption that the market would drop. No one can predict this with certainty. “You don’t know that they’re going to come down,” Orman said. “They could continue to go up and up and there you are sitting on the sideline waiting for them to come down.” Trending: Warren Buffett once said, “If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you ****.” These high-yield real estate notes that pay 7.5% – 9% make earning passive income easier than ever. By selling all of her holdings within the IRA, Jane would, in effect, be trying to time the market. Orman says this carries considerable risk, as there’s no guarantee the market will drop and Jane could miss out on potential gains while she waits for a dip that might never happen. Orman highlighted that staying invested allows for continued growth opportunities, even during uncertain market conditions. Orman suggested that Jane focus on a more traditional approach by maintaining her current investments while adding new money to her IRA. She recommended that Jane apply dollar-cost averaging to her contributions, which involves investing fixed amounts regularly, regardless of market conditions. Many investment experts state that this approach can help reduce the impact of volatility over time and doesn’t require trying to anticipate market highs or lows. Trending: Studies show 50% of consumers think Financial Advisors cost much more than they do — to debunk this, this company provides matching for free and a complimentary first call with the matched advisor. Story Continues For Orman, dollar-cost averaging provides a balanced path forward that avoids making large, potentially risky moves to catch market downturns. Orman believes in a disciplined, consistent investment strategy that capitalizes on long-term growth and minimizes emotional responses to fluctuations. Timing the markets can be risky and Orman has maintained this stance. Financial experts often caution against this strategy, as it’s notoriously difficult to predict movements accurately. Selling and reinvesting at the wrong times can lead to significant losses, missed gains and increased anxiety about market changes. See Also: Many are using this retirement income calculator to check if they’re on pace — here’s a breakdown on how on what’s behind this formula. In Jane’s case, even if her strategy resulted in a successful reentry at lower prices, it would involve a high level of risk and vigilance, something that Orman suggests could undermine her financial stability. Orman’s advice focuses on a steady, long-term approach to investing. For those in similar situations with retirement accounts like IRAs, Orman emphasizes sticking to a consistent investment strategy and avoiding drastic changes based on predictions of what the market might do. 9. The Baltics wait for Europe’s strategic new railway The Baltics wait for Europe’s strategic new railway BBC The trans-Baltic rail project has already cost billions of euros, but is years from being completed The three Baltic states came up with the idea years ago for a high-speed railway spanning 870km (540 miles) across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Rail Baltica began as a grand project, but it has now become a strategic imperative: since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Baltics increasingly view their neighbour as an existential threat. Currently, there is no direct link that crosses the Baltics and connects with Poland. Rail Baltica will do that, cutting travel time and bringing economic and environmental benefits, but the costs of this ambitious scheme are mounting. Meanwhile, Baltic states and their Nato allies need the railway in place fast. Estonia’s Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Svet said the rail link is vital amid the Russian war in Ukraine. “History is repeating itself,” he said. “******’s aggressive regime is trying to recreate an imperial project on the territory of the former ******* bloc.” The memory of decades of ******* occupation is still fresh in the Baltics. Moscow deported hundreds of thousands of people from the region to Siberia. Estonia and Latvia share land borders with Russia, while Lithuania is adjacent to the Russian enclave Kaliningrad, which also shares a border with Poland, and Moscow’s close ally, Belarus. About 10,000 Nato soldiers are currently stationed in the Baltics, alongside local troops. Their total number could reach 200,000 in a worst-case scenario. “Rail Baltica will increase military mobility and allow trains to go directly from the Netherlands to Tallinn,” Cmdr Peter Nielsen, from Nato’s Force Integration Unit, said. For Estonia’s infrastructure minister, the railway is “an unbreakable link with the networks of Europe”. Not far from the Estonian capital, Tallinn, at the tip of the railway, dozens of workers are welding and hammering away at the new Ülemiste passenger terminal. “This will be the network’s most northern point, the starting point of 215km of railway in Estonia and 870km across the three Baltic States,” said Anvar Salomets, CEO of Rail Baltica Estonia, stepping carefully across the embryonic platforms. The northernmost point of the line is in Estonia, although there is little sign of a track Until now, the Baltics have used a Russian track width because their rail system dates back to the ******* era. Passengers have to change trains to the ********* system when they get to the Polish border. The new network will use the ********* railway track width and connect seamlessly with railways across the EU. “The trains will run at up to 250km/h (155mph) compared with 80 or 120km/h (50 or 74mph) right now,” Salomets added. That means journey times from Tallinn to the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, will be massively reduced, from at least 12 hours now to under four. “It’ll be a game-changer, decreasing the environmental impact across our whole transport sector,” says Salomets, who foresees big economic benefits. Recent analysis for the Rail Baltica consortium estimates the overall economic boost at €6.6bn (£5.5bn). “The vast majority of studies of existing high speed rail systems show a positive economic impact,” said Adam Cohen of the University of California at Berkeley. Getty Images Latvia and Estonia have been criticised for building rail terminals before the railway itself But those benefits will not appear overnight and there is growing concern at the spiralling cost. Developers’ estimates have increased fourfold since 2017 and now stand at €24bn. So far, the EU has subsidised 85% of the project and has just announced another €1.1bn. Estonia and Latvia have also come under criticism for focusing on putting up the rail terminals first before they build the mainline. French engineer Emilien Dang, whose RB Rail oversees the project, blamed recent global crises for the big spike in costs: “Our initial estimate hadn’t taken into account the Covid pandemic and high inflation – and the situation in Ukraine has dramatically increased the cost of material.” As he walked across a big new terminal in the Latvian capital Riga, he also cited cultural issues. “The view from France, wrongly, is that the Baltics are one unit. But they are three countries, with different regulations.” French engineer Emilien Dang said the project was having to deal with three separate countries with different regulations The Baltic states have decided to split the project into two phases. The first, costing €15bn, will have a single instead of double track ***** by 2030 and focus on the most important train stops. The second track and additional train stations are to be completed as part of a second phase with no specific completion date yet. The soaring costs have prompted the states to scale back some of their ambitions. “We can further scale back the scope of phase one, for example by connecting Riga airport at a later stage,” said Andris Kulbergs, who chairs a Latvian parliamentary committee investigating the project. As billions of euros for the first phase are yet to be secured, that might be necessary. Estonia’s national auditor Janar Holm believes several more years of delays are likely: “We have to find the funds to build this railway now or it’ll be even more expensive.” The country’s infrastructure minister, Vladimir Svet, insisted “we are decreasing the budget as much as possible, we’ve rationalised the public procurement process and, if necessary, we’ll take on a loan.” “If we want to preserve our culture and feel secure about our freedom, there is no other way than being in a strong EU, Nato and international community that supports international law,” he added. For the three Baltic states that broke free of the ******* Union to join the EU and Nato, Rail Baltica could serve as a lifeline – if it manages to stay on track. The second-year coach defended her decision to name Brazill to face the ********, saying she wanted to give the 34-year-old every opportunity to play. “She was really close, we try and give them until the last minute,” Webb said. “I know it always comes up, but we train after the teams come out, so we were always going to name her and test her.” After featuring in the first 10 games of the season, Brazill has been sidelined the past two games after hurting her ankle in the clash with Greater Western Sydney. She has been in a moon boot since the round nine clash, including during training, but the Dockers said it was a precautionary measure to avoid further damage. Adelaide will host Fremantle in the semi-final next week after losing to undefeated minor premiers North Melbourne on Friday. The Crows narrowly edged out the Dockers for a double chance after securing fourth spot with a stronger percentage. 11. The iPhone 18 Pro may get a camera feature never before seen on the iPhone The iPhone 18 Pro may get a camera feature never before seen on the iPhone Our iPhones are our primary devices to check the latest news, connect with friends on social media, and capture important memories through photos. A significant camera upgrade is anticipated for the iPhone Pro series; however, this enhancement will not be available on the current iPhone 16 Pro or the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro series. Instead, the iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to introduce a main rear camera with a variable aperture for the first time. This information comes from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who shared the details on Medium. A variable aperture allows you to adjust the size of the lens opening on the iPhone, similar to how you can with a DSLR camera. This feature gives you greater control over the amount of light that enters the camera sensor, affecting the depth of field in your photos. With a variable aperture, you can switch between different f-stops, providing flexibility for various ********* conditions. In other words, you can enjoy more artistic freedom to experiment with varying depths of field and achieve the desired look for your photos. Photographic Styles on the iPhone 16 Pro Joe Maring / Digital Trends Most smartphones do not feature variable aperture technology. However, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra does include this capability, just like the Xiaomi 13 Ultra. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus also had a variable aperture system, but it was based on older technology. Currently, Samsung’s latest models, such as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, do not incorporate variable aperture technology. Kuo expects Apple to turn to ********-based Sunny Optical and Taiwan’s Largan Precision as its variable aperture lens providers. Going back to the iPhone 14 Pro series, the main cameras on Apple’s premium phones have featured a fixed aperture of ƒ/1.78. We should expect more of the same on the iPhone 17 Pro series, which is likely to debut in September. Apple should announce the iPhone 18 series in 2026. Since the first iPhone was revealed in 2007, Apple has consistently improved the camera on its No. 1 product. The next significant update could arrive in less than two years. Troopers outsmart motorcyclists doing wheelies, high speeds on I-5 Troopers outsmart motorcyclists doing wheelies, high speeds on I-5 Suspects who troopers say were driving recklessly on high-speed motorcycles may have been able to outrun the Washington State Patrol (WSP) on Interstate 5, but troopers had another way to bring them to a stop. Shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday, troopers tried to stop two motorcycles on I-5 in Federal Way for doing wheelies and speeding at more than 100 mph, but the suspects fled, according to WSP. The riders likely thought they had dropped the cops when they stopped for gas in Renton, but that wasn’t the case. WSP has a fleet of aircraft, and while the motorcycles could speed away from troopers on the ground, a small plane followed them to Renton. When the bikers stopped for gas there, they were taken into custody. They were booked into the King County Jail for eluding, a felony. 16. Jillaroos thrash NZ to win rugby league’s Pacific Cup Jillaroos thrash NZ to win rugby league’s Pacific Cup Australia have reasserted their status as the heavyweights of international women’s rugby league, thrashing New Zealand 24-4 in the Pacific Cup final as revenge for last year’s decider. The pressure was on the Jillaroos this Pacific Championships following that shock loss to the Kiwi Ferns in the 2023 final, and some controversial selection calls since. Brad Donald’s side responded by going almost the entire series without conceding a point, with only a suspect Leianne Tufuga try on Sunday preventing them from recording three consecutive clean sheets for the first time. At CommBank Stadium, the Jillaroos’ left edge set the tone for a dominant showing that would have been even more one-sided had Tarryn Aiken kicked more than two of five goal attempts. Halfback Aiken was the Jillaroos’ best, sending the final pass for Julia Robinson to score the opening try when Shanice Parker rushed in. It was Robinson’s seventh four-pointer of the series. When Aiken stepped past Apii Nicholls and Angelina Teakaraanga-Katoa en route to the tryline 10 minutes after half-time, the Jillaroos were 24 points ahead and looked unlikely to be chased down. Aiken could have had another try in the shadows of half-time after a chip and chase narrowly cleaned up by Nicholls. Tamika Upton showcased some of her own brilliant best, cashing in when Nicholls could not control the star fullback’s grubber kick. The Kiwi Ferns had ample chances to find points with the game in the balance, particularly in the ******* immediately after halftime, when an Upton knock-on helped them stay up the Jillaroos’ end. But Najvada George and then Mele Hufanga spilt the ball at point-blank range, with neither Kiwi Ferns half able to create a line break much less a try on Sunday. Their first break came when Hufanga intercepted a ball from Ali Brigginshaw, sprinting 60 metres before being tackled by Kezie Apps and Aiken. The Kiwi Ferns found a consolation try in the last two minutes, though Tufuga appeared to drop the ball over the line on the left wing. New Zealand initially called a medicab onto the field when Annessa Biddle collected the hip of rival second-rower Yasmin Clydsdale and lay motionless on the ground during the second half. Biddle was eventually able to rise to her feet and leave the field, but showed category-one head injury symptoms so did not return. A knee injury prematurely ended Simaima Taufa’s afternoon midway through the second half. For their next international match, the Jillaroos will face England for the first time since 2017 as part of the NRL’s second annual trip to Las Vegas in March. Cost of living top of mind as Mauritius holds election Cost of living top of mind as Mauritius holds election Mauritius is holding a parliamentary election with Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and his main rivals promising to tackle a cost-of-living crisis in the Indian Ocean archipelago. Polling centres opened at 7am (0300 GMT) on Sunday, with small numbers of voters seen moving to check their names in the register before picking their ballots, a Reuters witness said. Voting was expected to end at 1400 GMT. The country of about 1.3 million people markets itself as a link between ******* and Asia, deriving most of its revenues from a flourishing offshore financial sector, tourism and textiles. It has forecast 6.5 per cent economic growth in 2024 compared with 7.0 per cent in 2023 but many voters are not feeling the benefits. Jugnauth’s Alliance Lepep coalition has promised to raise minimum wages, increase pensions and reduce value-added tax on some basic goods. It says it will use payments from the *** under an October agreement for Britain to cede the Chagos Islands while retaining the US-*** Diego Garcia air base. Mauritius also receives aid from China. “The alliance led by the prime minister is selling the economic prosperity card with promises of more money to different segments of the population,” political analyst Subash Gobine said. The opposition is also pledging to increase pensions, introduce free transport and internet services and reduce fuel prices. It is dominated by the Alliance du Changement coalition led by Navin Ramgoolam and two other parties running in the Linion Reform alliance, whose leaders, Nando Bodha and Roshi Bhadain, plan to alternate as prime minister if they win. “It is the youths who will make the difference in these elections,” voter David Stafford, 36, said in the capital Port Louis, explaining that people were looking for economic innovation and job opportunities as much as fiscal changes. Some one million people are expected to choose lawmakers for the islands’ 62 seats in parliament for the next five years from a list of 68 parties and five political alliances. Last week, Jugnauth’s government blocked social media platforms until a day after the election, when results are expected, citing national security concerns after conversations between public figures were leaked. It lifted the ban a day later after opposition parties criticised the move. Whichever party or coalition gets more than half the seats in parliament also wins the prime minister’s post. 19. If You Want A New Tesla Cybertruck, You Can Get It Built And Delivered In 10 Days. That’s Not A Good Thing For The EV Company If You Want A New Tesla Cybertruck, You Can Get It Built And Delivered In 10 Days. That’s Not A Good Thing For The EV Company If you want a brand-new Tesla Cybertruck, you might be surprised to discover you can have one built and delivered to your door in 10 days. While that sounds great for anyone in the market for one of these futuristic-looking trucks, it’s a worrying sign for Tesla. It suggests that demand for the Cybertruck is nowhere near what Tesla hoped for – and that’s a big problem for the company. Don’t Miss: Originally, the Cybertruck had a very long waiting list. Tesla once had over a million people who put down $100 to reserve one. Back then, Elon Musk expected the Cybertruck would be sold out until 2027, meaning anyone who wanted one would have to wait years. But the situation looks very different less than a year after production began. Only about 2.5% of those million-plus reservations turned into actual orders. Now, instead of people lining up to get their hands on one, Tesla is scrambling to find new buyers. The initial hype has fizzled and what ******** is a tough market reality – Tesla has more trucks than buyers. Trending: The global games market is projected to generate $272B by the end of the year — for $0.55/share, this VC-backed startup with a 7M+ userbase gives investors easy access to this asset market. Several new Cybertruck owners have shared their experiences online and the trend is clear: Tesla delivers these trucks much faster than expected. For example, a recent buyer, Gabe Thompson, shared on social media that he ordered his non-Foundation Series Cybertruck on October 18. By Oct. 29, he was already taking delivery in Dallas. He didn’t have a years-old reservation; he simply went to Tesla’s website, ordered a $79,990 truck and 10 days later, it was his. Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — you can become an investor for $0.80 per share today. As Torque News reports, other new owners have similar stories. One person ordered on Oct. 15 and had a delivery date of October 30. Another got his Cybertruck delivered in under three weeks after placing an order. The fact that Tesla can build and deliver these trucks so quickly suggests one thing: there aren’t many new orders in the pipeline. Story Continues So what happened to all the demand? Tesla fans who were once eager to pay for the Cybertruck seem to have backed off. Some Reddit commenters speculate that years of delays, rising prices and changes to the truck’s design may have turned people off. After all, the final product isn’t exactly what was first promised. It’s also possible that some people who reserved a truck years ago aren’t interested anymore – or can’t justify the $80,000 price tag. See Also: With over 7.8K investors including Meta, Google, And Amazon Execs — this AI Startup’s valuation has skyrocketed from $5 million to $85 million in just three years. Be an early investor with just $1,000 for only $0.50/share today. If Tesla can’t build up demand for the Cybertruck, the company could face some hard choices. They might have to scale back production or pause it until demand catches up. This greatly contrasts Tesla’s other models, like the Model 3 or Model Y, which continue to sell well without reservation lists. The Cybertruck was supposed to be a game-changer, but right now, it’s looking more like a gamble that isn’t paying off. For anyone wanting a Cybertruck, now is probably the easiest time to get one. But for Tesla, the ease of getting one points to a ******* problem: the demand just isn’t there and the hype that once surrounded the Cybertruck might have driven off into the sunset. 21. Gallego defeats Lake in Arizona Senate race Gallego defeats Lake in Arizona Senate race Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) is projected to beat *********** Kari Lake in a consequential race for Arizona Senate, dealing the former local news anchor her second straight electoral loss, according to Decision Desk HQ. Gallego, who has served in the House for nearly a decade representing a Phoenix-based House seat, will succeed outgoing Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.). Sinema opted against reelection after changing her political affiliation from Democrat to Independent last year, as Sinema faced steep odds in getting reelected. Gallego announced his challenge to Sinema even before she made clear she would not be seeking another term, putting Senate Democrats in a temporarily awkward position of possibly having to choose which Democrat they would support. The Arizona Democrat leaned into his biography as the son of a single mom, with family roots in Mexico and Columbia. He also touted his time in the Marines. His victory comes as a small but significant relief for Democrats, who had a crushingly disappointing election cycle this year. Though they managed to protect their Senate seats in the battleground states of Nevada, Wisconsin and Michigan, in addition to Arizona, they also lost seats in Ohio, Montana and West Virginia, and look poised to lose in Pennsylvania as well. They also lost control of the White House, while their prospects for keeping the House look exceedingly dim. Lake is a former local news anchor who previously ran for Arizona governor in 2022, narrowly losing to Gov. Katie Hobbs (D). Lake became well known during her 2022 bid as a prominent election denier — something that came back to haunt her again during her Senate bid even as she continued to ****** her 2022 loss in court. Lake also attracted controversy over some of her remarks. She angered some Republicans for making critical statements invoking the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) — statements she argued that were made in jest. She’s previously called ********* the “ultimate sin” and cheered a now-repealed 1864 law that banned nearly all abortions in the state. Lake, this cycle, maintained she would not vote for a federal ban on ********* if elected to the Senate and said ********* restrictions should be left up to the states. Lake faced a primary challenger in Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, though Lake was widely seen as the GOP favorite. At the same time, Gallego also faced questions during his Senate run over his record and whether his stance on issues like immigration and the border had changed, as some have pointed to prior comments he made on the issue years ago, including calling Donald Trump’s border wall “*******” and “*****.” Gallego was also a member of the House Progressive Caucus but later let his membership lapse, citing dues as the reason. Republicans sought to nationalize the race, seeking to tie Gallego to Democrats like Vice President Harris and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in ads. Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media, Inc. Credit: Google Trillium offers 4x training boost, 3x inference improvement over TPU v5e Enhanced HBM and ICI bandwidth for LLM support Scales up to 256 chips per pod, ideal for extensive AI tasks Google Cloud has unleashed its latest TPU, Trillium, the sixth-generation model in its custom AI chip lineup, designed to power advanced AI workloads. First announced back in May 2024, Trillium is engineered to handle large-scale training, tuning, and inferencing with improved performance and cost efficiency. The release forms part of Google Cloud’s AI Hypercomputer infrastructure, which integrates TPUs, GPUs, and CPUs alongside open software to meet the increasing demands of generative AI. A3 Ultra VMs arriving soon Trillium promises significant improvements over its predecessor, TPU v5e, with over a 4x boost in training performance and up to a 3x increase in inference throughput. Trillium delivers twice the HBM capacity and doubled Interchip Interconnect (ICI) bandwidth, making it particularly suited to large language models like Gemma 2 and Llama, as well as compute-heavy inference applications, including diffusion models such as Stable Diffusion XL. Google is keen to stress Trillium’s focus on energy efficiency as well, with a claimed 67% increase compared to previous generations. Google says its new TPU has demonstrated substantially improved performance in benchmark testing, delivering a 4x increase in training speeds for models such as Gemma 2-27b and Llama2-70B. For inference tasks, Trillium achieved 3x greater throughput than TPU v5e, particularly excelling in models that demand extensive computational resources. Scaling is another strength of Trillium, according to Google. The TPU can link up to 256 chips in a single, high-bandwidth pod, expandable to thousands of chips within Google’s Jupiter data center network, providing near-linear scaling for extensive AI training tasks. With Multislice software, Trillium maintains consistent performance across hundreds of pods. Tied in with the arrival of Trillium, Google also announced the A3 Ultra VMs featuring Nvidia H200 Tensor Core GPUs. Scheduled for preview this month they will offer Google Cloud customers a high-performance GPU option within the tech giant’s AI infrastructure.
