Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. The gist is that there is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone. Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game’s success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats. The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 4.8 billion times in 2023. So, it’s little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily. How to play Wordle To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day’s secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren’t in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard. You’ll only have six guesses to find each day’s word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It’s also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once. Wordle is free to play on the NYT’s website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak. How to play Wordle more than once a day If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication’s games, you don’t have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You’ll have access to an archive of more than 1,000 previous Wordle games. So if you’re a relative newcomer, you’ll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions. In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordlebot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day’s game. The Colorado company is working through a flight test program of the XB-1 supersonic demonstrator aircraft, which completed its most recent test flight on Nov. 5. This was the seventh out of 10 planned subsonic test flights to confirm XB-1’s performance and handling qualities before attempting to reach supersonic speeds. During the Nov. 5 test flight, which lasted 55 minutes, XB-1 reached an altitude of 23,015 feet (7,015 meters) and a new top speed of 629 mph (1,012 kph). He was spotted by a local nature photographer in the Canmore area, much farther east than he’s normally known to frequent. The Boss, officially known as Bear No. 122, was seen Sunday where photographer and biologist Jason Leo Bantle lives in Harvie Heights, a hamlet just northwest of Canmore. Parks Canada said The Boss is in his mid-20s, and the last time he was captured he weighed roughly 450 pounds (about 200 kilograms). The bear is regarded as possibly the largest in the Banff National Park area, his usual stomping grounds. The grizzly has been through a lot over the years. He’s eaten a rival ****** bear and even survived being struck by a train. (Jason Leo Bantle) Blair Fyten, human wildlife coexistence specialist with Banff National Park, said Parks Canada wardens had to “shepherd” the bear away from Banff on Nov. 1 as it was trying to get into town, likely to find a crabapple tree it fed on last year. That weekend The Boss was seen in Harvie Heights. Bantle said he saw a social media post with a photo of The Boss walking in front of his home. Late Sunday afternoon, The Boss made his way further east to Canmore, where local peace officers along with the RCMP monitored the bear as it went through the neighbourhood. The Town of Canmore said the grizzly didn’t appear aggressive and it wasn’t accessing any wildlife attractants. Eventually the bear travelled back west, where it once again passed through Harvie Heights, feasting for hours, according to Bantle. He said he was able to capture a few photos of what he dubbed “the patriarch of the Bow Valley” in his neighbourhood after it made its way back from Canmore. He said several residents in his community were able to carefully watch the bruin from the safety of their vehicles as The Boss wandered around the hamlet foraging for the bear necessities — berries and apples — in preparation for hibernation. “I think everybody was just in awe of this scene and he didn’t seem impacted by us. He was just doing his thing. And I think everyone just wanted to have an experience with a legend,” Bantle said. Reflecting on his experiences photographing The Boss and seeing his images after they’ve been processed, Bantle said he became emotional. “When you’re in the moment, you’re actually kind of lost,” he said, adding he contemplated how much longer the grizzly will be a living icon of the ********* wilderness. “Just to have been in the presence of such a bear and to have such unique moments … it was really overwhelming.” Fyten said The Boss is an older bear that normally spends most of his time west of the Banff townsite in the Lake Louise area and Kootenay National Park. “This is the first time that I’m actually aware that he’s gone to the town of Canmore,” Fyten said. He noted that this time of year is when bears are looking for as much food as possible to bulk up for their hibernation, which is a likely reason The Boss wandered so far. He said The Boss was probably following the train tracks looking for peas, lentils and the odd animal carcass to feed on. “A deer or something that’s been hit by the train and has wandered off into the woods and *****. And, you know, he comes across that, and that’s just a a huge food reward for a bear at this time of the year,” Fyten said. The Boss was guided by Parks Canada wardens away from the town of Banff on Tuesday. The bear was led toward his usual habitat by wildlife officials while several visitors to Banff watched from afar as the grizzly crossed the road near the Fenlands Recreation Centre. “[We] got him out to the east side of town and on his merry way. And, you know, we haven’t heard or seen of him for a couple days,” Fyten said. ‘The Boss,’ officially known as Bear No. 122, usually hangs around Banff National Park. If Mail is your go-to app for staying in touch and getting things done, there’s a lot to like in the updated version. We’ll start with the fact that a priority mail feature floats your most important messages to top of the inbox These are messages with a deadline or call to action, and the new Mail app wants to make sure you act on them in a timely fashion. If you struggle to stay on top of your inbox, this will go a long way toward making sure you’re responding to key messages. Summary features turn out to be a real time-saver, too, whether it’s the auto-generated summaries that appear in some messages in your inbox to give you the gist of what an email is about before you tap on it, or the summary tool that parses messages to highlight their key points. I especially like the latter, too, because it helps me sort through long email chains with multiple recipients weighing in. I’ve just started using iOS 18.2 so I don’t yet have a verdict on these changes, but they do seem to fall in line with the other productivity improvements Apple Intelligence has introduced so far. Apple has big plans for Siri, as it uses Apple Intelligence to make its digital assistant smarter and more responsive. Eventually, the plan is for Siri to be aware of what’s on your iPhone screen, put that information in context and form responses based on that information — but we’re a long way from that, as Mark Spoonauer’s new Siri vs. old Siri testing indicates. Of all the features I tested while putting iOS 18.1 through its paces, Siri has the most work ahead of it. iOS 18.2 looks like a crucial step forward by adding ChatGPT integration to Apple’s digital assistant, which at the very least, has enhanced the conversational capabilities of Siri, according to my colleagues who’ve spent more time with this feature. I turn to Siri for the basics at the moment, but if you’re more heavily invested in the digital assistant’s evolution into a more powerful part of the iPhone experience, you’ll likely want to be a part of that progress. The Baltics wait for Europe’s strategic new railway The Baltics wait for Europe’s strategic new railway BBC The trans-Baltic rail project has already cost billions of euros, but is years from being completed The three Baltic states came up with the idea years ago for a high-speed railway spanning 870km (540 miles) across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Rail Baltica began as a grand project, but it has now become a strategic imperative: since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Baltics increasingly view their neighbour as an existential threat. Currently, there is no direct link that crosses the Baltics and connects with Poland. Rail Baltica will do that, cutting travel time and bringing economic and environmental benefits, but the costs of this ambitious scheme are mounting. Meanwhile, Baltic states and their Nato allies need the railway in place fast. Estonia’s Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Svet said the rail link is vital amid the Russian war in Ukraine. “History is repeating itself,” he said. “******’s aggressive regime is trying to recreate an imperial project on the territory of the former ******* bloc.” The memory of decades of ******* occupation is still fresh in the Baltics. Moscow deported hundreds of thousands of people from the region to Siberia. Estonia and Latvia share land borders with Russia, while Lithuania is adjacent to the Russian enclave Kaliningrad, which also shares a border with Poland, and Moscow’s close ally, Belarus. About 10,000 Nato soldiers are currently stationed in the Baltics, alongside local troops. Their total number could reach 200,000 in a worst-case scenario. “Rail Baltica will increase military mobility and allow trains to go directly from the Netherlands to Tallinn,” Cmdr Peter Nielsen, from Nato’s Force Integration Unit, said. For Estonia’s infrastructure minister, the railway is “an unbreakable link with the networks of Europe”. Not far from the Estonian capital, Tallinn, at the tip of the railway, dozens of workers are welding and hammering away at the new Ülemiste passenger terminal. “This will be the network’s most northern point, the starting point of 215km of railway in Estonia and 870km across the three Baltic States,” said Anvar Salomets, CEO of Rail Baltica Estonia, stepping carefully across the embryonic platforms. The northernmost point of the line is in Estonia, although there is little sign of a track Until now, the Baltics have used a Russian track width because their rail system dates back to the ******* era. Passengers have to change trains to the ********* system when they get to the Polish border. The new network will use the ********* railway track width and connect seamlessly with railways across the EU. “The trains will run at up to 250km/h (155mph) compared with 80 or 120km/h (50 or 74mph) right now,” Salomets added. That means journey times from Tallinn to the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, will be massively reduced, from at least 12 hours now to under four. “It’ll be a game-changer, decreasing the environmental impact across our whole transport sector,” says Salomets, who foresees big economic benefits. Recent analysis for the Rail Baltica consortium estimates the overall economic boost at €6.6bn (£5.5bn). “The vast majority of studies of existing high speed rail systems show a positive economic impact,” said Adam Cohen of the University of California at Berkeley. Developers’ estimates have increased fourfold since 2017 and now stand at €24bn. So far, the EU has subsidised 85% of the project and has just announced another €1.1bn. Estonia and Latvia have also come under criticism for focusing on putting up the rail terminals first before they build the mainline. French engineer Emilien Dang, whose RB Rail oversees the project, blamed recent global crises for the big spike in costs: “Our initial estimate hadn’t taken into account the Covid pandemic and high inflation – and the situation in Ukraine has dramatically increased the cost of material.” As he walked across a big new terminal in the Latvian capital Riga, he also cited cultural issues. “The view from France, wrongly, is that the Baltics are one unit. But they are three countries, with different regulations.” French engineer Emilien Dang said the project was having to deal with three separate countries with different regulations The Baltic states have decided to split the project into two phases. The first, costing €15bn, will have a single instead of double track ***** by 2030 and focus on the most important train stops. The second track and additional train stations are to be completed as part of a second phase with no specific completion date yet. The soaring costs have prompted the states to scale back some of their ambitions. “We can further scale back the scope of phase one, for example by connecting Riga airport at a later stage,” said Andris Kulbergs, who chairs a Latvian parliamentary committee investigating the project. As billions of euros for the first phase are yet to be secured, that might be necessary. Estonia’s national auditor Janar Holm believes several more years of delays are likely: “We have to find the funds to build this railway now or it’ll be even more expensive.” The country’s infrastructure minister, Vladimir Svet, insisted “we are decreasing the budget as much as possible, we’ve rationalised the public procurement process and, if necessary, we’ll take on a loan.” “If we want to preserve our culture and feel secure about our freedom, there is no other way than being in a strong EU, Nato and international community that supports international law,” he added. Shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday, troopers tried to stop two motorcycles on I-5 in Federal Way for doing wheelies and speeding at more than 100 mph, but the suspects fled, according to WSP. The riders likely thought they had dropped the cops when they stopped for gas in Renton, but that wasn’t the case. WSP has a fleet of aircraft, and while the motorcycles could speed away from troopers on the ground, a small plane followed them to Renton. When the bikers stopped for gas there, they were taken into custody. They were booked into the King County Jail for eluding, a felony. WSP Aviation manages six airplanes: Three Cessna 182s, one King Air, and two Cessna 206s equipped with Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) cameras.
