  1. Ukraine launches major drone ******* on Moscow Ukraine launches major drone ******* on Moscow MOSCOW (Reuters) -Ukraine attacked Moscow on Sunday with at least 25 drones, forcing the temporary closure of two of the city’s major airports, Russian officials said, in what was the biggest Ukrainian drone strike on the Russian capital to date. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drones were destroyed in the Ramenskoye and Kolomensky districts of the Moscow region, as well as in Domodedovo city, southwest of Moscow. The Moscow region has a population of more than 21 million. “According to preliminary information, there is no damage or casualties at the site of the fall of the debris,” Sobyanin said on the Telegram messaging app. “Emergency services are on the sites.” The Ramenskoye district, some 45 km (30 miles) southeast of the Kremlin, was last targeted in September in what was then Ukraine’s biggest ******* on the Russian capital, when Russian air defence units destroyed 20 drones. Rosaviatsia, Russia’s federal air transport agency, said on Telegram that “to ensure the safety of civil aircraft flights, temporary restrictions have been introduced on the operation of the Domodedovo and Zhukovo airports,” starting at 0530 GMT. It did not say how long the restrictions would be in force. Separately, Ukrainian drone attacks have set several non-residential buildings on ***** in Russia’s Kaluga and Bryansk regions overnight, regional governors said on Sunday. The Russian ministry said it had destroyed 17 drones over the Bryansk region. 3. ‘Delusional and Grubby Little Control Freak’ ‘Delusional and Grubby Little Control Freak’ Elon Musk’s daughter has ripped into her father for being “delusional and grubby little control freak” with the maturity of a 15-year-old after the world’s richest man trashed her on social media yet again. On Wednesday, Vivian Jenna Wilson, Musk’s 20-year-old transgender daughter, wrote on Threads that Donald Trump’s re-election had convinced her to move abroad—something she’d been mulling for a while now. Musk responded by writing on X, the social media platform he owns, “The woke mind virus ******* my son,” a line he has repeated several times to “explain” his opposition to puberty blockers. “So, you’re still going with the ****-story about how ‘Woe is me, my child was infected by something-or-other and that’s totally the reason they hate me,’” Wilson shot back on Threads on Thursday. She went on to say the reason why Musk responded specifically to a report about her leaving the country was because he was **** he didn’t have any power over her. “At the end of the day, everyone around you knows you as a delusional and grubby little control freak who hasn’t matured as a person for 38 years,” she wrote. It’s not the first time Wilson, 20, has accused her father of being immature and controlling. When Musk made a skin-crawling offer to “give” Taylor Swift a child after she endorsed Kamala Harris for president, Wilson described the comment as “heinous incel nonsense.” The two have been estranged since Wilson cut ties in 2022, according to a Walter Isaacson biography about the billionaire owner of X. Musk shares 12 children with three women—a scenario that smacks of womb envy—and Wilson says he is an absent father and “serial adulterer.” (Isaacson’s biography confirmed the SpaceX chief fathered secret twins while still in a relationship with the singer Grimes.) Earlier this week, news broke that Musk and Grimes were house hunting for a mansion for the former couple to share with some of Musk’s other children and their mother. Grimes and Musk had been battling for custody of their three young children since 2022, with Musk allegedly withholding the children from Grimes as recently as July. If those reports are true, it does prompt the question of whose idea it was to do a “Scientology, the Sequel” arrangement, as Wilson put it. 5. Chelsea v Arsenal: ‘A work in progress’ – how Enzo Maresca is turning Blues fortunes around Chelsea v Arsenal: ‘A work in progress’ – how Enzo Maresca is turning Blues fortunes around Serious decisions had to be made on his arrival, notably the selling of youth product Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid. The club talked to Maresca about their intentions; he has the freedom to accept players and question club decisions. His squad is now full of players he wanted, with the exception of one case who he accepted the club’s approval for despite not being sure about. But with Gallagher everybody was aligned. With just a year left on the midfielder’s contract, Chelsea and Maresca found themselves between a rock and a hard place. If he stayed he would have to renew, but they were struggling to agree on financial demands and Chelsea were never going to allow his contract to run down. The player had to depart. Coming the other way was Joao Felix, who returned to the Blues having spent an unsuccessful loan spell there in 2023, but on much lower wages and a seven-year deal. “I don’t do miracles,” is one of Maresca’s favourite sayings, and you can imagine him pointing that out about a player who has struggled to fulfil their potential. The club though, were convinced he could be useful and that Maresca’s detailed work would make him better. Eventually the coach accepted the challenge. Felix was an exception to the rule. The Chelsea model works on the basis that their potential stars – young players with huge qualities – are paid a fixed sum plus performance-related incentives. The new ownership say they do not want to be hamstrung by high wages as the previous regime were. It is all about trying to build a sustainable model for the long-term that allows players who impress to be rewarded with extensions and more money, as Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer got in their new contracts, while allowing the club to move on those who underperform, easier to do when they are on average Premier League wages. Enzo Fernandez, for example, was signed from Benfica in January 2023 for £107m – but on a nine-and-a-half-year contract. The deal was certainly an upgrade on what the midfielder was earning at Benfica, but still said to be nowhere near what he could have earned elsewhere. Chelsea’s owners say the long contracts are not given with a view to try to amortise the value of a player over a number of years, but rather to build the right model to make the club sustainable, including the shaping of a squad that can be together for years. It does not matter how much a player costs, but they have to come with one big condition – to have the right background, character and ability to be team players. Maresca, identified by the club to guide them for the next decade, can have any player he wants as long as they are under the age of 24 and willing to commit to the team long-term. He wants two players for every position as a bare minimum and, with that now in place, he does not envisage signing more than two or three each transfer window. To outsiders, one of the most impressive things Maresca has done is stabilise a squad that was seen as being hugely inflated, with talk of in excess of 45 players. The manager though has a first-team squad of 23 and that is what he has dealt with since day one. Many clubs will have a squad of about 18 of their strongest players with the remaining numbers made of youngsters. Chelsea have added one or two more because of the schedule this season, which could see them playing 70 matches across four competitions, plus the Club World Cup. Chelsea believe talk of an oversized squad was also exaggerated, because it included players who have suffered mid to long-term injuries, those who have been pre-signed with a view to the future and others who don’t fit into Maresca’s plan and will be moved on. 7. Five reasons to visit Vietnam’s north Five reasons to visit Vietnam’s north Which is better: Melbourne or Sydney? East coast or west coast US? The Swiss or French Alps? These arguments have been raging for decades with no clear winner, for each destination has its diehard fans. Now, the same battlelines are being drawn in Vietnam. In one corner is the south with its buzzing metropolis Saigon, beach resorts, tropical islands and year-round hot weather. It’s the clear winner in terms of visitor numbers. In 2023 Saigon welcomed 40 million tourists compared to 24 million in Hanoi, the capital in the north. But for some, the crowds in the south are reason enough to head north, where the pace is slower. Here are five other reasons to visit northern Vietnam. THE STREET FOOD OF HANOI In Hanoi, there are hundreds of restaurants selling pho, Vietnam’s famous rice noodles and beef soup. The most famous is Pho Thin on Lu Doc Street in Hanoi French’s Quarter which charges only $4 for a square meal. It’s not the cleanest restaurant in the city, but their secret recipe can’t be beaten. La vong fish is another must-try dish in Hanoi. Made using a species of catfish from the Red River revered for its soft aromatic flesh, it’s sliced into thin fillets, marinated in turmeric and grilled on skewers. The city’s most famous la vong restaurant, Cha Ca Thang La Vong, is on Cha Ca Street. They only serve one dish. Then there’s bun cha, a hearty lunch of grilled patties served over rice noodles and a sweet and sour broth. Traditionally bun cha was a workers’ lunch — a quick meal sold at truck stops and street stalls. But it became a global food sensation in 2015 after Barack Obama and the late Anthony Bourdain ate at Bun Cha Huong Lien, a family-run eatery on Le Van Hu Street, also in the French Quarter. VIETNAM’S HIMALAYAS Until 2013, Ha Giang, a mountainous district bordering China in Vietnam’s north-east, was a military zone. To visit, foreigners required special permits that were difficult to get. Today, anyone can travel to Ha Giang. The road is mind-blowing: an endless array of hairpin turns that snake up mountain passes and sashay across valleys, with scenery cut straight out of the Himalayas. The journey ends at ***** Van, a French colonial town on a 1600m-high plateau. Tourists stay in the Old Quarter, a maze-like warren of cobblestoned alleyways and flagstone buildings topped with terracotta tiles. The oldest — a terrace with two stone pillar supports adorned with red lanterns — was built by the Luong family 200 years ago and is still inhabited by their descendants. THE BALI OF VIETNAM In 1946, Vietnam took up arms against the French colonial government, which had ruled the country with an iron fist for more than 80 years. The showdown occurred at Dien Bien Phu, a strategically important hill set in a valley in north-west Vietnam. The Vietnamese won by carrying hundreds of heavy cannons, piece by piece, up the mountains surrounding the valley, and rained ***** on the unsuspecting French down below. Today Dien Bien Phu is a big city with a gigantic *******-style sculpture on the hill to commemorate the battle. The city is nothing to write home about but the lush green countryside around it, inhabited by friendly hill tribes, is as beautiful as Bali. Set on a winding brook among cherry blossom trees, Muong Phang village, 30km east of Dien Bien Phu City, has three or four little homestays. It is half an hour by bicycle to the former underground hideout of General Vo Nguyen Giap, the mastermind of the battle of Dien Bien Phu. MUSEUMS GALORE The century-old hotel Sofitel Metropole in Hanoi is a living museum with hundreds of antiques. Hotel guests can join guided tours of rebel tunnels discovered under the building. The Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street showcases hundreds of thought-provoking folk paintings about communism, patriotism and agriculture. And don’t miss the Vietnam Military History Museum on Dien Bien Phu Street. Its courtyard is crammed with damaged tanks, B-52 ********, Russian jets and ********* choppers. Set in a space-age building that seems to hover over the hill, the Museum of Dien Bien Phu Victory in Dien Bien Phu City tells the story of Vietnam’s victory over the French. About 15km from ***** Van in Ha Giang Province is the Palace of the Hmong King. Built in 1902, the fortress-turned-museum has 5m-thick stone walls and 64 bedrooms, where the king’s many wives and children lived. THE SECRET ISLAND With limestone karst formations that rise from the sea like giant chess pieces, Ha Long Bay, a three-hour drive from Hanoi, is the most popular destination in northern Vietnam. The conventional way to see it is on a multi-day cruise. But there’s a more immersive and less expensive way to experience Ha Long Bay: by spending a few days at Cat Ba Island, a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. With cloud-ringed mountains and valleys pockmarked with karsts, Cat Ba looks like the birthplace of King Kong. The most recent adaptation of the legend — Skull Island — was shot here in 2016. Throw in a waterfront city riddled with inexpensive hotels and seafood restaurants, and you’ll see why Cat Ba Island is northern Vietnam’s best-kept secret. Camera IconCat Ba Island. 9. This 24-year-old made big money by pretending to be a filthy rich ****. Here’s how wealthy Americans really live This 24-year-old made big money by pretending to be a filthy rich ****. Here’s how wealthy Americans really live If you were to watch Aris Yeager’s TikTok videos, you’d think he was your typical, spoiled rich **** — until you realize it’s all an act. Yeager adopted a rich **** persona, Louis, known as “The ********* ****” and has posted numerous videos of himself acting entitled while upholding a swanky lifestyle that includes gourmet dinners, driving fancy cars and partying on yachts. And it’s served him well. As of November 2024, Yeager has more than 1.7 million followers. And according to Business Insider, Yeager is leveraging his now six-figure income not to live out his online persona, but to build his business, an app called Storytime that connects influencers with small businesses for promotional content. But while you might think that wealthy Americans spend their days driving Ferraris and arguing to get their way, many live far more subdued lifestyles than that. In fact, there are plenty of people with exceptional net worths – but you wouldn’t ever know it by looking at them. Here’s why many of America’s wealthiest people keep a low profile. According to Ramsey Solutions’ coverage of a 2024 Global Wealth Report from UBS, there are nearly 24.5 million millionaires in the U.S. But it’s not always so easy to differentiate the rich from the average. Many well-off Americans opt to hide their wealth rather than flash it. You might assume that your neighbor around the corner who drives an economy sedan and lives in a three-bedroom, 1,700-square-foot home isn’t all that well off. In reality, that same person might have millions of dollars to their name. Now you may be wondering “What’s the point of being wealthy if you don’t spend your money?” But you should know that stealth wealth has its benefits. For one thing, it can buy you financial liberties. If you have enough assets, you don’t have to worry about keeping a toxic job just to make ends meet, and rather, can focus more on job satisfaction and fulfillment. Those who are wealthy are most often financially literate, meaning they focus on generating long-term wealth that will last, rather than spending all of their income streams now, living paycheck to paycheck. Story Continues Hidden wealth also buys you peace of mind. As of 2022, 37% of Americans could not cover a $400 emergency expense with cash or its equivalent, according to the Federal Reserve. If you’re truly wealthy — and spend your money modestly — you won’t need to sell off luxury goods or go into debt before you can afford a sudden expense. Read more: 5 ways to boost your net worth now — easily up your money game without altering your day-to-day life If you make a point of keeping your wealth hidden, it can be easier to protect it (and yourself) to some degree. But there may also come a point when you want to upgrade your car to a nicer, newer model or a home with more amenities and nicer furnishings. And if you can afford those things as a result of your savings and hard work, then they won’t hurt your financial health. But it’s also important to make sure you’re protecting your assets. To that end, be wary of strangers who approach you in public places, as well as those who get your contact information online and reach out to you electronically. If you’re public online, it’s easy to become a prime target for ******. The more you own, the more measures you’ll likely have to take in the name of security. Whether it’s a comprehensive security system for your home with cameras or opting for locked garage parking, you have more precautions to think about. You can quickly be left with nothing to show for your hard work if you don’t have enough car insurance or home insurance coverage for your assets, for example. And finally, monitoring your finances regularly is a standard practice if you’re growing your money. Log into your accounts once a week or every other week to check for suspicious activity. You can also request a free copy of your credit report from Experian, Equifax and TransUnion annually to monitor for ******. Though signing up for a credit monitoring service on your own for more frequent updates will keep you more connected to your finances. Now you launch it right in the middle of Xbox gamers playing CoD, D4, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R right around the corner, then Indy following shortly after. I think whatever sales small sales they get on Xbox, they should put it in GP so they can get the fee from MS, and then build a presence for the game among Xbox gamers, possibly leading to better sales for DS2 on Xbox, if it’s not a 5 year wait. 15. Fremantle Dockers out for redemption against Adelaide Crows with blockbuster semifinal looming Fremantle Dockers out for redemption against Adelaide Crows with blockbuster semifinal looming Fremantle will be out for redemption in more ways than one after booking their ticket to the semifinal clash with Adelaide. After defeating Essendon in the elimination final, the Dockers will meet the team that narrowly edged them out for a double chance after the Crows went down to undefeated minor premiers North Melbourne on Friday. Coach Lisa Webb said it was “another challenge” but one the team was ready for. “They are a brilliant team. I watched them (against the Kangaroos) and ****, they were impressive as well, especially in that first half with their pressure,” she said. “But we’re still in it. We want to go all the way and Adelaide is a good opportunity for us to… play another great team.” Fremantle have only defeated Adelaide once from eight attempts, with their sole victory back in 2021. In their last meeting, the Crows humiliated the Dockers, holding them goalless at home in a 33-point drubbing at Fremantle Oval in the club’s worst loss of their 2024 campaign. Adelaide superstar and co-captain Ebony Marinoff, who was named the AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year for 2024, was unstoppable, with a game-high 31 disposals, 19 tackles, seven marks and a goal. The Dockers were also knocked out in a preliminary final by the eventual premiers in 2022, the start of their three-season exile from finals, which ended on Saturday against Essendon. Fremantle won’t return home for the remainder of their 2024 campaign after hosting the elimination final but while that prospect might be daunting for some, the Dockers are yet to lose away from home this season, with a 6-0 record on the road. “We love travelling together, we love getting away,” Webb said. “We just enjoy each other’s company, we’re a really connected group. Sometimes it’s easy to say but far out, we really are. You can tell by the way they play.” Star defender Emma O’Driscoll said the Dockers putting in a conscious effort to bond with each other off-field has ***** the foundation for a strong on-field connection. “That just forms a bond and trust like no other,” she said. “It’s like a friendship, it’s like a sisterhood and I feel like that’s what makes us have each other’s backs out there. “That trust and connection is something that makes us play good footy and it’s something that makes successful teams.” Camera IconAshleigh Brazill of the Dockers in action. Credit: Travis Hayto/AFL Photos O’Driscoll believes it’s that strong bond that can take the Dockers deep into November. She said it would “mean the absolute world” to win the club’s first premiership. “That’s the reason you play footy, is to get a flag. No-one plays for anything else. We’re here working our buts off for six to nine months of the year, to get a flag,” she said. “I hope we can go all the way and I think we’ve got to have the belief that we can and I think this group, with the connection that we have, it is possible.” To help their cause, Fremantle are confident important defender Ash Brazill will be fit to play in the semifinal despite being a late withdrawal against the ********. According to a more recent study in Nutrients, blueberries—with all their sweet and tart goodness—can protect against cognitive decline in at-risk individuals when their risk was identified early. So whether you’re craving an energizing smoothie, fruit bowl, oatmeal, cobbler or salad, consider throwing a handful of blueberries in there. Related: There Are Over 400 Types of Berries, but These Are the Ones With the Best Health Benefits, According to Nutritionists How Blueberries Lower Dementia Risk Blueberries are brain-healthy in a few ways, actually. “Eating berries, particularly blueberries, may lower dementia risk by improving cognitive performance and influencing brain metabolism,” says Dr. David Perlmutter, MD, a board-certified neurologist and 6x New York Times bestselling author. “Problems with respect to brain metabolism directly increase dementia risk.” Giving more insight into the study’s findings, Dr. Perlmutter says blueberries can enhance executive abilities in the brain, memory performance and more. This is thanks to the compounds anthocyanins and proanthocyanins, he continues, which target the brain’s ability to produce energy. Blueberries are also rich in another particular set of compounds we need to thank for their health benefits: antioxidants. “These antioxidants have powerful anti-inflammatory effects to help counteract inflammation in the brain,” says Catherine Gervacio, RND, a registered nutritionist and diet consultant for WOWMD. “Chronic inflammation is a risk factor for dementia and other neurodegenerative *********.” Related: Research Says You Can Lower Your Dementia Risk by 33% By Doing This One Thing Are Other Berries Good for Brain Health? The type of berry matters, Gervacio says, but she wouldn’t say one is necessarily better than others in terms of overall brain health. She lists benefits of four kinds: Blueberries: The flavonoids and other antioxidants in blueberries make these great for your noggin. Strawberries: Strawberries have a unique compound, fisetin, which has promising effects on brain aging and memory. Raspberries: Tart and nutritious, raspberries are rich in ellagic acid, which helps reduce inflammation and protects cells from damage. They also have a ton of fiber, which is great for your digestive health, too. Acai berries: These super-foods support healthy cholesterol levels and reduce inflammation, which can indirectly benefit brain health. Dr. Perlmutter points out that the beneficial parts of blueberries, according to the study, were anthocyanins and proanthocyanins—which can be found in other berries. Particularly, ****** elderberries and cranberries, to name a couple. “However, the evidence provided in this research points to blueberries as particularly effective, so other types of berries may need further investigation to confirm similar effects,” he says. As far as the amount and frequency of berries to eat for brain health, it depends. Every person’s body is different and has different needs. However, Gervacio believes ½ cup to one cup of berries a day will do the trick. Looking at research, Dr. Perlmutter sits more at the lower end, ½ cup a day. Related: ‘I’m a Cardiologist, and This Is the Summer Berry I Swear by for Heart Health’ Other Foods That Can Lower Dementia Risk Why not add more neurologist-approved foods? Gervacio suggests nuts, seeds and fatty fish. The first two are high in antioxidants, vitamin E and healthy fats, she says, while the latter is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. All can improve cognitive function. Dr. Perlmutter recommends foods that support metabolism, reduce insulin resistance and are rich in antioxidants. Besides the foods Gervacio mentions, he adds fruits in general, as well as leafy green vegetables and whole, gluten-free grains. In other words, it sounds like a big salad with all those delicious ingredients is on this week’s menu. Hewett, 20, did not play at all this year after he had surgery on a sesamoiditis injury in March, before being ruled out just before his expected return in July with a minor bone stress in his foot. It was a ***** for the developing Eagles, with Hewett one of the bright sparks of a dismal 2023 season when he played 14 promising games having been drafted with pick No.14 in 2022. Hewett battled sesamoiditis — a pre-existing injury he had before he was drafted — for much of the pre-season and even went to Melbourne to consult a specialist physiotherapist at the *********** Ballet before the Eagles’ bit the bullet and put him in for surgery. The Swan Districts product is one of several West Coast players who have been working with strength and conditioning coach Corey Green out of the Athletic Institute in Wangara. Hewett’s expected return is an early positive for the start of the Andrew McQualter era which officially begins at West Coast on Monday when the new coach is joined by the young Eagles at first day of pre-season on Monday. McQualter will front he media for only the second time as the Eagles’ seventh full-time coach after being appointed as the successor for Adam Simpson in late September. The former Richmond caretaker coach will have the next generation of West Coast on the track with No.1 draftee Harley Reid to begin his first full pre-season at Mineral Resources Park. It could give a strong glimpse into the Eagles’ future with Reid and Hewett set to be a strong part of the rebuild under McQualter who has already indicated he wants to build a gameplan based on pace which both aren’t short of. Reid had an incredible first 20 games in the AFL off a shortened pre-season and will return from Victoria where he spent the off-season as an ambassador for Victorian racing. The pair of explosive midfielders will be joined by fourth-year midfielder Campbell Chesser who is out of contract and looking for a big season. Chesser, 21, played a career-best 18 games last season but was subbed out three time and averaged only 11 disposals with a season-best of 16 against Greater Western Sydney in round three. Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn will attend a service in Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, while junior Northern Ireland Office minister Fleur Anderson will be at the the service in Belfast. Belfast’s ceremony will begin at 11:00 GMT and will include Lord Mayor Micky Murray laying a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of the citizens of Belfast. Designed by Lucy Turner, from Prison Arts Foundation, the poppy wreath was a collaborative piece of work with armed forces charity SSAFA, Belfast Met and the Prison Service. Sinn Féin’s changing approach More than 20 years have passed since Alex Maskey became the first Sinn Féin lord mayor to pay his respects to the war ***** at the Cenotaph. On 1 July 2002 he ***** a laurel wreath at the monument two hours ahead of the main council ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. Maskey described his gesture as a “major step for republicans and nationalists on this island”. He did not attend the main ceremony that year, refusing to take part in what he called a “military commemoration” of the World War One battle. Since then, Sinn Féin politicians have always declined to attend Cenotaph wreath laying ceremonies in any official capacity. In the years that have passed, there have been other firsts and many other gestures in a bid to promote reconciliation and good relations. In 2016 Martin McGuinness travelled to France and Belgium as part of a two-day trip to World War One battlefields. Massive sardine invasion is a ‘shocking’ sight for beachgoers Massive sardine invasion is a ‘shocking’ sight for beachgoers An enormous school of sardines was a socking sight for beachgoers along the shores of the Philippines last month. Many of the locals were seen scooping up the tiny, slippery fish while others looked on in disbelief. Two videos of the incredible sightings were posted on WooGlobe’s YouTube channel, one by Frederick, the other by Diane. “During a family gathering at a private resort, we were shocked to see such a large swarm of small fish on the shore,” Frederick told WooGlobe. “What’s funny was that all the guests were too busy enjoying the gift of the sea.” “My husband woke up at 5 a.m. while we were staying at Panagsama Beach in Moalboal, Cebu, Philippines,” Diane shared with WooGlobe. “He noticed many people gathered along the shore and asked a local resident why they were there. 22. Democrats dreamt of an unbeatable coalition. Trump turned it to dust Democrats dreamt of an unbeatable coalition. Trump turned it to dust Getty Images Donald Trump swept to victory on Tuesday by chipping away at groups of voters which Democrats once believed would help them win the White House for a generation. After Barack Obama’s victory in 2008, many triumphantly claimed that the ******** voting coalition which had elected the first ****** president was growing more powerful, as the makeup of America changed. Older, white conservatives were dying off, and non-white Americans were projected to be in the majority by 2044. College-educated professionals, younger people, *******, Latinos and other ******* minorities, and blue-collar workers were part of a “coalition of the ascendant”. These voters were left-leaning on cultural issues and supportive of an active federal government and a strong social safety net. And they constituted a majority in enough states to ensure a Democratic lock on the Electoral College – and the presidency. “Demography,” these left-wing optimists liked to say, “is destiny.” Sixteen years later, however, that destiny appears to have turned to dust. Cracks began forming when non-college educated voters slipped away from the Democrats in midterm elections in 2010 and 2014. They then broke en masse to Trump in 2016. While Joe Biden, with his working-class-friendly reputation built over half a century, won enough back to take the White House in 2020, his success proved to be only a temporary reprieve. This year, Trump supplemented his gains with the blue-collar workers by also cutting into the Democratic margins among young, Latino and ****** voters. He has carved up the coalition of the ascendant. According to exit polls, Trump won: – 13% of the ****** vote in 2024 compared to *********** John McCain’s 4% against Obama – 46% of the Latino vote this time, while McCain got 31% in 2008 – 43% of voters under 30 against the 32% for McCain – 56% of those without a college degree – back in 2008, it was Obama who won a majority Speaking on Thursday after his comeback victory, Trump celebrated his own diverse coalition of voters. “I started to see realignment could happen because the Democrats are not in line with the thinking of the country,” the president-elect told NBC News. Immigration and identity politics Trump did it with a hard-line message on immigration that included border enforcement and mass deportations – policies that Biden and the Democrats recoiled from when they took power back from Trump in 2021, lest they anger immigrant rights activists in their ******** base. ******** border crossings reached record levels under the Biden administration, with more than eight million encounters with migrants at the border with Mexico. “If you watch a video from Hillary Clinton back in 2008 in the primaries, she talks about making sure there’s wall-building, making sure that that immigrants who violate the law get deported, making sure everybody learns English,” said Kevin Marino Cabrera, a *********** commissioner in Miami-Dade County. “It’s funny how far to the left [the Democrats] have gone.” This week, Trump became the first *********** since 1988 to win that heavily Latino county in Florida. He also won Starr County in south Texas, with its 97% Latino population, with 57% of the vote. In 2008, only 15% of the county voted for McCain, the ***********. Mike Madrid, an anti-Trump *********** strategist who specialises in Latino voting trends, told the BBC that the problem with “demography is destiny” was that it risked treating all non-white Americans as an “aggrieved ******* *********”. “But that is not and nor has it ever been the way Latinos have viewed themselves,” he added. “I hate that if you’re ******, you’ve got to be a Democrat or you hate ****** people and you hate your community,” Kenard Holmes, a 20-year-old student in South Carolina, told the BBC during the presidential primaries earlier this year. He said he agreed with Republicans on some things and felt Democratic politicians took ****** voters for granted. With some states still tabulating their results, Trump currently has improved on his electoral margins in at least 2,367 US counties, while slipping in just 240. It wasn’t just the number of counties that Trump won that made a difference, either. Kamala Harris needed to post significant margins in the cities to offset *********** strength in rural areas. She consistently fell short. In Detroit’s Wayne County, for example, which the latest US Census reports is 38% ******, Harris won 63% of the vote – significantly lower than Joe Biden’s 68% in 2020 and Obama’s 74% in 2008. Polls consistently suggested that the economy, along with immigration, were the two issues of highest importance to voters – and where polls indicated Trump had an advantage over Harris. His economic message cut across ******* divides. “We’re just ***** of hearing about identity politics,” said Nicole Williams, a white bartender with a ****** husband and biracial children in Las Vegas, Nevada – one of the key battleground states that Trump flipped this year. “We’re just *********, and we just want what’s best for Americans,” she said. US voters on one reason Trump won… and why Harris lost The Democratic blame game begins Democrats are already engaged in considerable soul-searching, as they come to grips with an election defeat that has delivered the White House, the Senate and, perhaps, the House of Representatives to *********** control. Various elements within the party are offering their own, often conflicting, advice on the best path from the wilderness back to power. Left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders, who twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, also criticised identity politics and accused the party of abandoning working-class voters. Some centrist Democrats, meanwhile, have argued that the struggle to connect with voters goes beyond the economy and immigration. They point to how the Trump campaign was also able to use a cultural message as a wedge to fracture the Democratic coalition. Among the positions that Republicans targeted in this year’s election were calls to shift funding away from law enforcement, decriminalise undocumented border-crossings and minor ******* like shoplifting, and provide greater protections for transgender Americans. Many arose after the ******* of George Floyd in 2020 and the resulting rise of the ****** Lives Matter movement, as well as other efforts to advance social justice and acknowledge darker parts of ********* history. Within a few years, however, some of those positions proved a liability for Democrats when trying to win over persuadable voters and keep their coalition from fraying. Harris, for example, backed away from some positions she’d taken when she first ran for president in 2019. What does MAGA mean to these Trump supporters? In the last month of the presidential campaign, the Trump team made the vice-president’s past support for taxpayer-funded gender transition surgeries for federal prisoners and detained immigrants a central focus. One advert ended with the line: “Kamala is for they/them. President Trump is for you.” The Trump campaign spent more than $21m on transgender issue ads in the first half of October – about a third of their entire advertising expenditures and nearly double what they spent on spots on immigration and inflation, according to data compiled by AdImpact. It’s the kind of investment a campaign makes if it has hard data showing an advert is moving public opinion. After Trump’s convincing win, Congressman Seth Moulton, a moderate from Massachusetts, said his party needed to rethink its approach on cultural issues. “Democrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges many Americans face,” Moulton told the New York Times. “I have two little ******, I don’t want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.” Progressive Democrats, meanwhile, ******* that characterisation, and argue that standing up for the rights of minorities has always been a core value of the party. Congressman John Moran wrote on X in response: “You should find another job if you want to use an election loss as an opportunity to pick on our most vulnerable.” Mike Madrid, the political strategist, has a brutal assessment of where the Democratic coalition is today. “The Democratic Party was predicated on what really is an unholy alliance between working-class people of colour and wealthier white progressives driven and animated by cultural issues,” Madrid said. “The only glue holding that coalition together was anti-Republicanism.” Once that glue came unstuck, he said, the party was ripe for defeat. Future elections are sure to be held in a friendlier political environment for Democrats. And Trump, who has shown a unique ability to attract new and low-propensity voters to the polls, has run his last campaign. But 2024’s results will provide plenty of fuel for Democratic angst in the days to come. The Harris campaign itself believes she lost to Trump because she was facing a restive public ****** over the economic and social turbulence in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic. “You stared down unprecedented headwinds and obstacles that were largely out of our control,” campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon wrote in a letter to her staff. “The whole country moved to the right, but compared to the rest of the country, the battleground states saw the least amount of movement in his direction. It was closest in the places we competed.” Moses Santana, a Puerto Rican living in Philadelphia, is from a demographic which seemed reliably Democratic a decade or so ago. But when he spoke to the BBC this week, he was not so convinced the Democrats had delivered when in power – or that their message today connected with Americans like him. “You know, Joe Biden promised a lot of progressive things, like he was going to cancel student debt, he was going to help people get their citizenship,” he said. “And none of that happened. Donald Trump is bringing [people] something new.” Source link #Democrats #dreamt #unbeatable #coalition #Trump #turned #dust Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Images of Spain’s floods of the century BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Twelve days have passed since catastrophic flash floods carved a muddy scar through eastern Spain, ******** over 200 people and soiling the homes of thousands more. Apocalyptic scenes documented by The Associated Press photographers speak to the terrifying power of nature unleashed in all its fury. It was as if a tsunami, instead of having been generated in the ocean’s depths and sent smashing into the shore, had been poured down by some vengeful sky **** and rampaged through sleepy villages and ordinary neighborhoods. The wild newborn river caught thousands unaware, tossed cars around like toys and tore down buildings nearest the normally dry canal banks, which themselves were left widened with ragged edges. Survivors say that 15 minutes was all it took for a drainage canal that was crucial in the disaster to go from empty to overflowing. Abutting homes channeled the rushing water to expand its shockwave. Regional authorities ******* to alert the populace in time, and in some places there wasn’t even rain to put people on guard, magnifying the chaos. In the aftermath, streets look like they have been blasted back to the Medieval *******, covered by layers of mud that obscured any glimpse of pavement or cobblestone. Everything on the ground floor was turned into junk in a matter of minutes when the water burst into homes. Furniture, clothes, toys, photos, heirlooms … nothing was spared. The feeling of abandonment of many residents turned into rage, prompting the pelting of Spain’s King and prime minister with clumps of mud when they visited the devastated area. Every foot caked in mire, in the sticky brown filth that after days keeps oozing out of homes and ruined stores no matter how much is shoveled and swept away. The “thup, thup, thup” throbs in the air from the military helicopters flying over the area that has been labeled as “ground zero” of the Oct. 29 floods. The search goes on now for the missing. Searchers drive poles into mud banks hoping to find and recover the bodies of the *****. But human generosity is also found amid the despair. While thousands of troops and police reinforcements remove the countless wrecked cars, it’s the people themselves, the residents, neighbors and volunteers who stream in on foot to help.
