  1. Discord leaker Jack Teixeira gets 15-year sentence for sharing classified documents Discord leaker Jack Teixeira gets 15-year sentence for sharing classified documents Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira received a 15-year sentence in federal prison for leaking classified military documents on Discord in a Boston federal court, according to . Teixeira appeared before the court earlier today and asked the judge for leniency. He also issued a statement apologizing for “all of the harm that I’ve caused, to my friends, family and those overseas.” Defense attorney Michael Bachrach also claimed that Teixeira was subjected to bullying in high school and his military unit as an adjudicating factor for his actions. Judge Indira Talwani didn’t buy the defense’s bullying claims stating that the Air Force has already disciplined 15 other members connected to Teixeira for not taking more actions “that might have stopped him from doing this.” Teixeira shared classified military documents as far back as late 2022 on a Discord server dedicated to the pixelated sandbox game Minecraft. The ***** included information about the Ukrainian and Russian troop movements and military equipment used in the war in Ukraine and Russia’s attempts to obtain more weapons from Egypt and Turkey. The documents eventually found their way to other Discord servers as well as 4chan and Telegram. FBI officials arrested Teixeira at his home in April of last year. Teixeira originally agreed to with federal prosecutors in March that included a 16-year prison sentence for pleading guilty to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information and violating the Espionage Act. If he stuck with his not guilty plea and received a guilty verdict, Teixeira faced a much steeper maximum prison term of 60 years. 2. Democrats are losing Latino men. Ruben Gallego has advice on winning them back. Democrats are losing Latino men. Ruben Gallego has advice on winning them back. As Democrats work to sort out last week’s election results and determine why they lost Latino men in droves, a Latino Democrat and senator-elect has some advice for party leaders and top consultants: “Go touch grass and meet real Latinos.” CBS News Tuesday projected Gallego as the victor in Arizona’s U.S. Senate contest against *********** Kari Lake. He believes much of his party is out of touch with a key demographic he says they can’t win national elections without. “There is no winning nationally without Latinos,” Gallego said in an extensive interview with CBS News senior White House and political correspondent Ed O’Keefe Tuesday. “…There’s no path forward into the Democratic Party, into a national party, without Latinos.” Exit polls show Vice President Kamala Harris lost Latino men to President-elect Donald Trump — a significant ***** to a party that’s long relied on them as part of a broad coalition. The results were openly feared most of the past year by Democratic Party leaders and operatives. Going forward, Gallego said candidates need to go out and find Latinos where they already are. Gallego focused on bringing his campaign to Latino voters — sometimes, without talking about politics at all. His campaign hosted rodeos, boxing match watch parties, and carne asada cookouts. His team took food to construction shift workers at work sites after they’d clocked out in the early morning. Knocking on people’s doors, after shift workers are exhausted and preparing for the next day, won’t work, he said. “Talk to them. And talk to them as often as possible,” Gallego said. “And don’t expect you to be able to talk to them one way through TV.” There are “millions and millions” of Latino men out there, Gallego said, and they’re not afraid to speak their mind. Democrats on the national stage also missed the mark in how they spoke about immigration. Gallego’s first Spanish-language TV ad was about border security. Latinos in Arizona looked at the migration crisis at the border, with refugees pouring into the country, and called it “chaos,” Gallego said. While campaigning, “We didn’t actually speak about immigration reform because we know that the Latino voter just doesn’t believe it anymore,” Gallego said, meaning, Latino voters don’t believe Washington will actually pass a massive immigration reform bill in the near future. Instead, Congress needs to focus on fortifying U.S.-Mexico border security first to build trust, he said. But that message, O’Keefe suggested, may be a hard pill to ******** for fellow Democrats. “I’m a pharmacist about to give out very hard pills in the Senate,” Gallego said. Gallego also hinted that Democrats missed the mark on addressing inflation. Born on the south side of Chicago to a Colombian mother and a ******** father, with his mother raising four children alone, Gallego said he knows what it’s like to grow up struggling. He saw the flashing warning signs on inflation, not just in the polls, but as he talked with his working-class family members and constituents. “Growing up working class, there’s nothing more hurtful than working hard and then not being able to provide for your family,” Gallego said. “And I instinctively knew that’s what these men were going through.” “This is the first time I’ve ever seen men say I can’t do this,” Gallego said. “I can’t keep working, and it’s still not making a difference, and that’s when I realized it was really kind of a problem.” Raised by his mother, Gallego became a U.S. Marine and served in the Iraq war. He moved to Arizona for a local political job, ran and won a seat in the state House before winning his first congressional race in 2014, representing most of Phoenix and Glendale. He began on Capitol Hill with an outspoken progressive reputation and was among the Democrats calling on the U.S. Senate to abandon the filibuster. But Gallego has shifted his politics to the center in recent years, a reflection of the state’s roughly three-way voter registration split between Democrats, Republicans and independents. He launched his Senate campaign nearly two years ago, focusing early advertising and outreach on his military service, a key credential in a state with a hefty military and veteran population and a history of electing military veterans, including the late *********** Sen. John McCain, to Congress. With nominal Democratic primary opposition and polls giving him an early lead, independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema announced in March she would not run for reelection, avoiding a three-way contest. Until Sinema won her Senate race in 2018, a Democrat hadn’t been elected to the Senate in Arizona in three decades, though Sinema went on to leave the party. Then in 2020, Sen. Mark Kelly, a Democrat, won a competitive Senate race to serve the remainder of McCain’s term after his ******. In his race, Gallego wasn’t about to give up on Trump voters — or any voters, he said. A rising star in the party — a veteran and Latino who was victorious in a state Trump won — Gallego brushed off questions about a future bid for president. “Can I rule out running? I can — I can rule out a lot of things,” Gallego said. “First thing I want to focus on is this U.S. Senate race.” “That’s not a no,” O’Keefe pointed out. “It’s not a yes, either,” Gallego said, adding a Spanish word for patience: “Cálmate.” Gabrielle Ake and Kaia Hubbard contributed to this report. Rocket Lab Rocket Lab shares jumped in post-market trading after the company reported third-quarter results and announced its first customer for its coming Neutron vehicle. The space infrastructure company reported third-quarter revenue increased to $104.8 million, up 55% from $67.6 million for the same ******* a year ago, and above Wall Street’s expectation of $102 million, according to analysts surveyed by LSEG. Its net loss also increased year over year, to $51.9 million from $40.6 million, but its loss of 10 cents per share came in slightly below analyst expectations of a loss of 11 cents a share. Rocket Lab forecast fourth-quarter revenue between $125 million and $135 million, which at the midpoint would see the company bring in about $430 million this year. Additionally, the company announced its first launch deal for its Neutron rocket. A “confidential commercial satellite constellation operator” signed for two missions in mid-2026, which Rocket Lab said were at a price “consistent with our target” for the vehicle. Previously, the company said it was targeting a price point of about $50 million per Neutron launch. Shares of Rocket Lab jumped as much as 25% in after-hours trading, up from its close at $14.66 a share. The stock has been flying up the past three months, nearly tripling over that *******. Read more CNBC space news The bulk of Rocket Lab’s Q3 revenue growth came from its Space Systems unit, which builds spacecraft and sells satellite parts. The business brought in $83.9 million of the quarter’s revenue, up from $46.3 million a year ago, while its Launch unit brought in $21 million, roughly in line wit- $21.3 million a year prior. But the company’s small Electron vehicle, which sells for about $8.5 million per mission, has become the world’s third-most-frequently launched orbital rocket. It’s launched a company record 12 missions so far this year. And Rocket Lab added $55 million worth of new launch contracts to Electron’s backlog in Q3. Development of Neutron — as well as the Archimedes engines that power it — ******** a key watch item for investors, with heavy research and development spending driving most of Rocket Lab’s quarterly losses. Neutron is seen as crucial for Rocket Lab to tap larger markets, including a broader swath of U.S. national security launches. The company continues to expect Neutron to debut in mid-2025 and has outlined a variety of milestones in the rocket’s path to launch — including assembly and testing of flight hardware, ******* “multiple” Archimedes engines and continuing on work underway on the launchpad infrastructure in Virginia. 6. Ospreys rugby player quits game at 24 to protect mental health Ospreys rugby player quits game at 24 to protect mental health BBC Hari Morgan says injuries and the pressures of rugby intensified the grief he was experiencing A former rugby player has said he will not return to the professional game to protect his mental health. Harri Morgan, 24, who played for the Ospreys, announced he was taking a step back from the game in 2023 after trying to take his own life. He lost both his grandparents in a short space of time and the pressures of a professional sporting environment made matters worse. The Welsh Rugby Union said transitions and exits from the game could be turbulent, and they were focused on working on how players were supported through them. Morgan, a former Wales under-20s player, who also turned out for his hometown club Bridgend, saw his short-lived professional career hampered by injuries. Rugby used to be an outlet, but he said injuries and pressures of the sport intensified the grief he was experiencing. Mental health in rugby ‘going in right direction’ ‘’A lot of the negatives [in mental health] were leading back to rugby and the impact that was having,” he told BBC Wales Live. “Especially the injuries and the pressures of being in a professional environment. ‘’I definitely didn’t feel as if there was a lot of support around this sort of injured group within rugby. ‘’I didn’t feel as if I could say anything because I was letting down teammates, coaches and end of the day, I still needed to get a contract.’’ This sense of isolation only increased after both his grandparents ***** within a short space of time. ‘’It started off like sort of anxiety,” he added. “My heart would start racing and I’d get shortness of breath.’’ He said he became unable to cope and considered taking his life, saying: “I didn’t really feel anything, I just felt empty.” Morgan said he received great support from his club, Swansea-based Ospreys, after opening up. ‘’I can’t fault the club, they were amazing,’’ he said. ‘’They gave me the time and the space I needed and the opportunity to go back if I wanted to take it.’’ But he is clear he doesn’t see himself returning to the professional game, adding: “People ask me now, ‘do you want to get back into rugby?’ ‘’I’ve had the opportunity to get back in and I’ve said no, every time. I’d rather be happy than have all those benefits of being a professional rugby player.’’ He now manages a gym and works as a fitness coach, and hopes to see more support put in place for players. “It’s putting a space for those conversations to take place and the people of power within rugby saying ‘you’re struggling, what can we do to help?’ ‘’It’s the culture and understanding the individual and what they need.’’ Fellow Ospreys player Lloyd Ashley (left), is also working to change the way that professional rugby teams and players approach mental health Another former Ospreys player, Lloyd Ashley, has been appointed lead for mental health and wellbeing by trade body the Welsh Rugby Players Association. ‘’Just generally as a society we need to find it easier to check in on each other,” he said. Ashley hopes lessons learnt in rugby will filter through to other sports and also general society. ‘’The fact that we don’t just say when somebody says to us ‘how are you?’, we don’t just go, ‘yeah good, you?’, without even thinking about it,” he said. ‘’I hope that trickles into everybody’s lives because it’s important that we have spaces where we feel safe enough to be honest.” International player Dan Lydiate believes things have changed for the better since his debut for Wales in 2009. ‘’I think we’re talking about mental health more,” said the 36-year-old Grand Slam winner. “There’s more of an awareness of what’s going on in people’s lives which is a positive move.’’ After his father ***** two years ago, he said rugby was a lifeline. ‘’The only thing that was normal for me was to just get back into rugby and play the following week,” he added. ‘’I miss him now. Where I jump in the car, first thing I’d do, I’d pick up the phone and ring him on my way back. ‘’For all my career, until two years ago, that’s what we did every day.’’ He can understand why players struggle. ‘’In rugby, people see the highs but they don’t see the lows,’’ he said. ‘’They don’t see when you’re battered and bruised and ***** up in a hospital bed and struggling to put a pair of pants on because you’ve broken bones and stuff like that. ‘’It’s not all smiles on faces. It is a tough career on the body and the mind.’’ Fellow Wales international and Dragons teammate Shane Lewis-Hughes, 27, believes conversations around mental health should be happening day-to-day. ‘’I think as a man, especially in a sporting environment, it’s almost like sometimes you bury your problems and you think they’re going to stay away but they don’t,” he said. Dan Lydiate, who now plays for the Dragons in Newport, won 72 caps for Wales and also played for the British & Irish Lions In a statement, the WRU said: “It is always difficult to hear of problems experienced by individuals from within the rugby family and, whilst our hearts go out to anyone who is struggling or has struggled in this area, we are also extremely grateful to and encouraging of the players who are bravely speaking out on this subject.” It added that clinical psychologist Dr Dale Thomas worked with the two national teams and the Welsh Rugby Players Association. “With over 300 member clubs and districts, Welsh rugby is a pervasive and positive force in this area throughout the country, with our clubs serving as hubs and gathering places for all those involved to share problems and help each other,” it added. The statement said the WRU is “very proud” of its proactive approach through the community game, promoting the importance of all participants looking after themselves both physically and mentally. According to the network itself, the current target is Spring 2025 for second season of the popular show. In addition to the confirmation of a release window, a new short teaser was released for the show. You can watch that at the end of the story. The Last of Us Season 2 will follow the events of the second game in the franchise. That said, there will be some additions to the show in the form of backstory. In September, series creator and head of Naughty Dog Neil Druckmann said that the show will ***** further into areas that they couldn’t do for the game. “And there’s stuff in this season that I’m really excited about — stuff that we hinted at — one scene in particular comes to mind that I think fans of the game will eat up, because it really kind of tells you a lot of backstory of this important character that there wasn’t really a way for us to even do that in the game,” he said. It was also has been said that the story of the second game will likely be told over multiple seasons meaning that the show should at least get a third season. “We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two [more] seasons because we’re taking our time and [going] down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in season one too,” Showrunner Crag Mazin told The Hollywood Reporter. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that – as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television – season three will be significantly larger. 8. Apple’s rumored smart home display might arrive early next year with Apple Intelligence onboard Apple’s rumored smart home display might arrive early next year with Apple Intelligence onboard Apple’s long-rumored smart home display might arrive as soon as March 2025 It could have a six-inch screen and run a new operating system Apple Intelligence could be front and center There is seldom a shortage of Apple rumors, but one that has been constant – and heating up in recent months – is that the technology giant is planning to release a smart home display. And it makes a lot of sense as Apple continues to push into the smart home – there are already two smart speakers, the HomePod and HomePod mini, major updates to the Home app, and we can’t forget that Apple is part of the smart home standard Matter. Now, though, it seems Apple is working at a record pace to ready a smart home display. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that “a wall-mounted display that can control appliances, handle videoconferencing, and use AI to navigate apps” could launch as early as March 2025. That’s just five months away, and it sounds like a direct competitor to Amazon’s Echo Show 15. It might also be my dream Apple smart home display and a bit better than just a HomePod with a screen. Gurman shares a bit more about the smart display, which is codenamed J490. As expected, it’ll be a showcase for Apple Intelligence and likely the smarter features of the forthcoming Siri. From a design and hardware standpoint, it’ll come in silver or ****** and stand as a 6-inch square screen that resembles an iPad with thicker bezels. The report states it’s “about the size of two iPhones side by side” with a built-in camera seemingly for FaceTime calls or home monitoring, speakers, and a rechargeable battery. (Image credit: Apple) There is no mention of the processor, but we’d expect it to be Apple Silicon as it will need to power some other sensors, including one that can detect how many people are near the display. This is likely similar to Google’s Soli technology that is used on the Nest Thermostat to adjust what’s on screen based on whether you’re closer to it or farther away. Bloomberg’s report notes that the operating system is a cross between watchOS and the iPhone’s StandBy mode. This means you’ll likely get dedicated apps and peek into them like widgets. It’s reported that it will run FaceTime, Safari, Music, and Calendar, among others. Of course, it will also be an ideal way to control the smart home, and it is being pegged as a “Command Center.” As far as interactions go, it will either be touch or hands-free voice through Siri, much like a HomePod or HomePod Mini. The report notes that the smart display was “designed around App Intents, a system that lets AI precisely control applications and tasks” – a feature originally shown off at WWDC 2024 when Apple Intelligence was launched. Just as Amazon offers several designs for Echos or how Google’s Pixel Tablet can be affixed to a stand, Apple has reportedly made different attachments or bases for the smart display. The report notes that beyond hanging on a wall, there will be bases for placing it on a desk, nightstand, or even counter, and these will offer better sound through additional speakers. It ******** to be seen if the wall attachment will be done magnetically to a mount, allowing you to move it around quickly. Sign up to be the first to know about unmissable ****** Friday deals on top tech, plus get all your favorite TechRadar content. Like other smart displays, Apple’s will likely be a standalone device that you set up with an iPhone and sign in to with your Apple Account (formerly an Apple ID) to enable easy data syncing and the ability to hand off things like music or a call. While this is a stationary, non-moving smart display from Apple, there are also many rumors of an intelligent display attached to a robotic arm that the company is said to be working on. Bloomberg’s latest report notes that it is in the pipeline but farther out and will be much more costly at $1,000. That makes sense, considering it’s a ******. This smart display, which could launch next year, is said to be “far-less” expensive and closer in line with competitors like Amazon’s Echo Show. (Image credit: Future) All in all, it feels like it’s about time for Apple to really enter the smart home, and it seems like the company really wants to take a piece of the smart display market from the mainstays. If it’s anything like the HomePod, iPad, or iPhone, we can expect it to offer a premium build with strong audio and a good interface. It would also likely check off the box for a lot of folks who have been waiting for a proper smart home control panel. Further, it would reinforce Apple’s commitment to the smart home and show that it’s a category that the company sees on its roadmap for the long haul and one that it’ll likely continue to invest in. We also saw rumors this week that Apple is considering developing smart home accessories like cameras, and this report does mention that the development of those could be sped up if the smart display succeeds. Of course, until Apple announces it’s all but a rumor, so take this with a grain of salt, but I wouldn’t be shocked if the rumored smart display from the Cupertino-based technology giant eventually sees the light of day. 10. ‘I was amazed’: Zelda leads react to Echoes of Wisdom speedruns, and criticism ‘I was amazed’: Zelda leads react to Echoes of Wisdom speedruns, and criticism The creative leadership behind the latest Legend of Zelda game, Echoes of Wisdom, have responded to players’ creative tricks to speedrun the game, as well as common criticisms of the title. Since its release, players have used Echoes of Wisdom’s spawnable items in various surprising combinations to more quickly and easily beat the game. The game’s co-director, Satoshi Terada, said even he was surprised by what players came up with once the game was released. “Seeing how players are using it, I was really amazed at people’s imaginations,” he told the BBC, going on to mention a popular trick, which sees players combining beds with a tornado ****** to propel Zelda into the air, skipping larges sections. “That was one that we hadn’t thought of,” he said. Co-director Tomomi Sano added: “Players were using the tornado and the bed to actually climb and go over mountains. And this was something that I was amazed by, something that I probably wouldn’t be able to do.” Echoes of Wisdoms received mostly positive reviews at release, though there was some common criticism of the game, particularly its uneven performance on the ageing Nintendo Switch console. Sano told the BBC that Echoes of Wisdom uses a variable framerate, and that the developers felt this was the “best option” available for the game. Terada addressed another common criticism, that it’s difficult to navigate the game’s over-100 spawnable creature and items via its UI menu. “One of the essences of this game is being able to figure out different ways of using each of these echoes,” he said. “And so in that sense we wanted players to fall upon and see the echoes that they may not have noticed or have been using while they’re sorting through all the echoes that they have.” He also pointed out that players can more quickly navigate their inventory using the alternative notebook method. In VGC’s Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom review, we wrote: “Despite some ambitious ideas, beneath the surface Echoes of Wisdom is a surprisingly uneven Zelda adventure. Few of its headline mechanics are utilised to their potential which means that, while enjoyable and charming, it ultimately feels less essential than other modern 2D entries.” Source link #amazed #Zelda #leads #react #Echoes #Wisdom #speedruns #criticism Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  13. Morgan Stanley fund manager picks 3 stocks to buy following Trump’s win Morgan Stanley fund manager picks 3 stocks to buy following Trump’s win U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s election win has sent shock waves through the stock market and left investors scrambling to work out which sectors — and stocks — are set to benefit. Aaron Dunn, portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley’s U.S. Value Fund , noted the “great deal of volatility” in markets following the election result, as markets reprice “what had been a 50/50 election.” Speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Tuesday, Dunn, who’s also co-head of value equity at Morgan Stanley, identified three stocks he is ******** on following the election result. UnitedHealth Group UnitedHealth Group – which offers health insurance plans and services – is on Dunn’s list. The value investor noted that Medicare Advantage reimbursement rates had been “under pressure in the Biden Administration.” Reimbursement rates determine how much insurers can charge for monthly premiums and plan benefits. “So with Trump in now … that is being viewed very positively for managed care, because reimbursement rates are going to … be better,” Dunn explained. He also likes UnitedHealth’s earnings growth, and health insurance, prescriptions and health care services businesses. Year-to-date, its shares are up around 17%. “In our opinion, you’ve got a stock that’s become quite a bit cheaper … It’s a diversified play in this, [that] you’re getting it for just above the market multiple, with a solid runway of growth,” Dunn added. According to FactSet data, of 30 analysts covering the stock, 26 give it a buy or overweight rating. Analyst’ average price target is $626.44, which implies a potential upside of around 2%. Mid-America Apartment Communities Dunn’s pick to play the real estate sector in the U.S. is Mid-America Apartment Communities “[The] majority of real estate traded off immediately after the election (in-line with other rate-sensitive sectors). However, MAA offers a solution to the housing supply problem in the U.S,” he said. Year-to-date, however, shares in MAA are up 19%. Ten of the 25 analysts covering the stock give it a buy or overweight rating, according to FactSet data, while 13 have a hold rating and two have a sell call. The analysts’ average target price of $163.26 gives the stock 2% upside potential. NextEra Energy In the energy space, Dunn is ******** on NextEra Energy , which — as the “largest global developer of renewable projects” — sold off following the election result. Trump has vowed to curtail renewable energy subsidies and favors the oil and gas sector, but Dunn indicated that the market may be overestimating how much Trump will change when it comes to Inflation Reduction Act and renewable initiatives. Year-to-date, shares in NextEra Energy are up around 22% and the stock is trading at around 22 times price-to-earnings. “Here’s a company that is going to grow earnings in the high-single-digits at least the next couple years,” Dunn said. “They’re a leader in the space from a technology perspective.” He added that the company should increase its long-term growth rate guidance, given the growth in AI data centers. Of 24 analysts covering the stock, 15 give it a buy or overweight rating at an average price of $88.28, according to FactSet data. This gives it upside potential of around 19%. 14. Why Did the Egyptian Masons Put Down Tools on the Largest Obelisk Ever? Why Did the Egyptian Masons Put Down Tools on the Largest Obelisk Ever? The Unfinished Obelisk is an ancient Egyptian obelisk located in Aswan. This obelisk is known for its massive size, as well as for the fact that the work that was carried out on it was never finished. Had the Unfinished Obelisk been completed, it would have been the largest obelisk ever constructed by the ancient Egyptians. Nevertheless, its unfinished state has allowed us to gain some insights as to the way the ancient Egyptians were producing their obelisks. Egyptian Granite Obelisks The word ‘obelisk’ means ‘*****’ (a long rod used to skewer food for cooking) in ancient Greek and was used by the ancient historian Herodotus to describe these monuments. The ancient Egyptians called these monoliths ‘tekhenu’, which translates as ‘to pierce the sky’. As many will already know, ancient Egyptian obelisks are tapering four-sided rectangular pillars with a pyramidon on the top. These were set on bases and were typically constructed to commemorate an individual or an event, or to honor the gods. The Massive Unfinished Obelisk in Aswan, Egypt (Public Domain) The ancient Egyptians carved their obelisks from a single block of stone, almost always red granite. This type of rock is most notably found in Aswan, in the southern part of Egypt. In the granite quarries of Aswan, obelisks would be carved out of the bedrock, and then transported on the waters of the Nile River to their destinations, where they would then be erected. Obelisk of Aswan Abandoned One of the areas in Aswan where granite was being quarried was the Northern Quarries, which is located not far from the modern city of Aswan. It was here that the Unfinished Obelisk was discovered. The construction of this obelisk was commissioned by Hatshepsut (who reigned during the 15 th century BC), one of the most important and formidable pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. It has been speculated that the queen had planned to have the Unfinished Obelisk raised at Karnak. It was at this place that another obelisk, known today as the Lateran Obelisk, was set up by Hatshepsut, and the queen may have wanted the Unfinished Obelisk to complement it. The Unfinished Obelisk was thought to be a fallen Monument until it was fully uncovered (Underwood & Underwood/CC BY-SA 2.5) The Unfinished Obelisk shows how the stone was carved out of the bedrock (Olaf Tausch/CC BY-SA 3.0) Unfortunately, the massive obelisk was never completed. At some point of time during its construction, the workmen discovered cracks in the stone, and therefore decided to abandon the job. The Unfinished Obelisk has remained where it was ever since. Had the obelisk been completed, it would have had a height of 42 meters (138 ft) and would have weighed about 1323 ton (1200 metric tons), which would make it the largest obelisk ever created by the ancient Egyptians. Fresh Insights to Egyptian Construction The abandonment of the Unfinished Obelisk provides us with some new information about how these monuments were made by the ancient Egyptians. For instance, the workers would begin their work by separating the stone which would become the obelisk from the rest of the bedrock. Based on the marks left on the Unfinished Obelisk, this was probably achieved by chiseling holes into the rock, after which wooden wedges were forced into them. The wedges would then be soaked with water, which would cause them to swell, thus splitting the rock. After this, the obelisk could be chiseled out, and then transported to its destination. The Unfinished Obelisk, the largest known ancient obelisk, located in the northern region of the stone quarries of ancient Egypt in Aswan. (Ad Meskens/CC BY-SA 3.0) According to a report written in 2007, a deep trench at least 2.5 m (8 ft) deep was discovered by the Aswan Office of the Supreme Council of Antiquities as they were preparing the site for tourists. Further investigations revealed that there had been a canal connecting the quarry to the Nile. This meant that once the obelisks were completed, they could be brought to the canal and allowed to float by themselves down to the river, where they would then be loaded onto barges. The presence of this ancient canal is also a threat to the site, including the Unfinished Obelisk, as it may allow salts from the groundwater to seep into the rock. This could cause much damage, especially to the marks on the Unfinished Obelisk which have been so vital in adding to our understanding of the way the ancient Egyptians created these amazing monuments. Local police say they became involved with the incident on November 5, when they received a ********* complaint filed by Children’s Wisconsin, a local pediatric hospital. “The defendant was playing NBA 2K and the game was competitive,” the complaint states, later noting that White “became frustrated while holding [the baby], ultimately throwing [the child] against the wall.” White was later charged with one count of felony child ****** and one count of felony child neglect. The young victim–whose relationship to White is currently unknown–is said to be about eight months old. The child suffered severe injuries to the skull and brain, had to undergo multiple rounds of CPR, and is not expected to live. Medical professionals treating the victim also discovered other injuries–including a broken clavicle–in various states of healing, suggesting the child may have been physically abused prior to White’s outburst over the game. Per the complaint, White told detectives several differing versions of events, but when confronted with evidence of the child’s injure, he confirmed he had thrown the child, allegedly telling police, “I heard the impact of the wall after I tossed him.” According to the complaint, White’s rage stemmed from his performance in the game. He was reportedly down two points in the fourth quarter of the game when he inflicted life-threatening injuries on the unnamed infant. British author Samantha Harvey wins with Orbital British author Samantha Harvey wins with Orbital PA Media Samantha Harvey is the first woman to win the award since 2019 British author Samantha Harvey has won the 2024 Booker Prize award with her novel Orbital, the first book set in space to win the prize. Orbital contemplates the world from a different viewpoint as it follows a team of astronauts in the International Space Station. It’s the biggest-selling book on the shortlist in the ***, and has also outsold the past three Booker winners combined, up to the eve of their success. Harvey, the first woman to win the award since 2019, was announced as winner at a ceremony in London’s Old Billingsgate, and will take home £50,000. She dedicated the prize to “all the people who speak for and not against the earth and work for and not against peace”. She said she questioned herself while writing the book: “Why would anybody want to hear from a woman at her desk in Wiltshire writing about space when people have actually been there?” “I lost my nerve with it and I thought I didn’t have the authority to write it.” Speaking to BBC News, Harvey said she was “in complete shock and very overwhelmed”. She added that the award would change her life. Asked how she would spend the £50,000 prize money, she said: “I need to buy myself a new bike, and it’s going to be a good bike.” ‘Beauty and ambition’ Chair of the judges, Edmund de Waal, described Orbital as a “book about a wounded world”. He said the judges all recognised its “beauty and ambition” and praised her “language of lyricism”. Writing it, Harvey said she “thought of it as a space pastoral – a kind of nature writing about the beauty of space”. The 136-page long story, which is Harvey’s fifth novel, takes place over a single day in the life of six astronauts and cosmonauts. During those 24 hours they observe 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets over their silent blue planet, spinning past continents and cycling past seasons, taking in glaciers and deserts, the peaks of mountains and the swells of oceans. It is the second-shortest book to win the prize, and covers the briefest timeframe of any book on the shortlist. The shortest winning novel in the history of the prize was 1979’s Offshore by Penelope Fitzgerald, at 132 pages. Harvey previously told BBC Radio 4’s Front Row programme she wrote Orbital over the course of successive lockdowns. “I was writing about six people trapped in a tin can. It felt like there was something resonant about that and our experience of lockdown, of not being able to escape each other and also not being able to get to other people.” Harvey previously made the longlist for the Booker Prize in 2009 with her debut novel, The Wilderness. Rockstar has given Grand Theft Auto Trilogy a big graphical update Rockstar has given Grand Theft Auto Trilogy a big graphical update Three years after its troubled launch, Rockstar has released a significant update for the current-gen console and PC versions of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive edition. Released in 2021, GTA Trilogy DE – which is made up of GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas – received significant criticism for its disappointing presentation and visuals. However, Tuesday’s surprise update seems to have made big improvements. Patch notes simply note that a classic lighting mode – previously added to the mobile versions last year – has been added to consoles. By itself, this appears to have improved the Trilogy’s visuals significantly, but fans have noted there are more changes than Rockstar has mentioned. X user Besk has extensively detailed improvements they’ve discovered so far in The Trilogy, most notably new *****, rain, fog, and glass-breaking effects, new and fixed animations, extra bloom and lighting effects, and more. 22. More hints of Nvidia’s RTX 50 series reveal are here – next-generation GPUs are now rumored to be in production More hints of Nvidia’s RTX 50 series reveal are here – next-generation GPUs are now rumored to be in production Nvidia’s production focus has reportedly shifted to RTX 5000 series GPUs RTX 4000 series GPUs could be close to discontinuation This is a huge indication that Nvidia’s reveal could be sooner than anticipated Nvidia’s RTX 4000 series has been the focal point of the GPU market ever since its 2022 launch – its flagship GPU, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, ******** the king of all GPUs – often considered overkill for gaming, especially at resolutions below 4K. Now, if a new rumor holds any truth, Team Green’s production of RTX 5000 series GPUs could already be underway. This comes after months of speculation including rumors and leaks, some of which address the RTX 5000 series’ flagship GPU (the hotly anticipated RTX 5090) and its specifications along with its eye-watering purported price of $2,500. This latest rumor stems from Board Channels (a ******** forum) as spotted by VideoCardz – the post states that Team Green has shifted its focus from RTX 4000 series production to the upcoming RTX 5000 series GPUs. While this doesn’t mean Nvidia’s current-gen GPUs have been officially discontinued, the post claims that there is an ongoing transition to the next-gen GPUs within Nvidia’s main production line – the 4000 series is reportedly within its ‘final stage of inventory clearance’, as Team Green’s AD106 chip production line (which powers the RTX 4060) has halted entirely. (Image credit: Konstantin Savusia / Shutterstock) What does this mean for RTX 4000 series buyers? With the RTX 5000 series’ reveal edging closer, this month and December could be some of the last opportunities to get your hands on Nvidia’s 4000 series GPUs (aside from second-hand models, which can be a risky endeavor). Considering the raw power of the RTX 4090 and 4080, it wouldn’t be surprising to see scalping become a prominent issue once again – it may take a while for stock to run out, but scalpers will always be quick to act (AMD’s Ryzen 9800X3D CPU is the latest victim). Third-party AIC (Add-in-Card) brands that have partnered with Nvidia to manufacture RTX cards could see a decrease in supply for the 4000 series leading into 2025 – this is already evident over at Team Green’s key rival, AMD, with its flagship GPU (the Radeon RX 7900 XTX) now heavily discounted or sold as refurbished at multiple retailers in the ***, like eBuyer. We’ve seen this happen during the ******* of the 4000 series launch – the high MSRP price and shortages throughout the series’ lifetime led to scalpers reselling at obscene prices in various marketplaces. If Nvidia’s new GPUs are set to launch earlier than we anticipated, there’s no better time than now to make a move on the current-gen cards while they are still available – after all, if you pick up an RTX 4000 GPU now, it’ll still last you for years to come. 24. Critical PC and Console Feature Coming to GTA Trilogy That Mobile Users Had Since Years is Rockstar’s Final Hail Mary Critical PC and Console Feature Coming to GTA Trilogy That Mobile Users Had Since Years is Rockstar’s Final Hail Mary Rockstar Games has finally updated the GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition on PC and consoles with features previously exclusive to its mobile port. The update introduces the Classic Lighting mode, restoring the original games’ vibrant lighting and visual clarity. But why were they exclusive to mobile? Only took a year for a mobile feature to be ported. | Image Credit: Rockstar Games Released in 2021, the remastered trilogy faced widespread criticism for its bugs, poor graphics, and lack of features compared to the original titles. The mobile version was a lot better but it’s taken Rockstar a whole year to bring these upgrades over to PC and console. The GTA Trilogy Just Became Truly Definitive When Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition launched on consoles and PC, fans were excited to revisit iconic titles like GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. But upon release, players were shocked by its subpar graphics, broken animations, and poor performance. Comment byu/Turbostrider27 from discussion inGames To make matters worse, when the trilogy was ported to mobile devices last December, the mobile version came with some big visual upgrades. Comment byu/Turbostrider27 from discussion inGames These included the Classic Lighting mode, better shadows, and improved reflections, which were missing from the PC and console editions. The backlash was intense, with many fans feeling that the so-called “Definitive Edition” was anything but. While the mobile versions, released in December 2023, successfully addressed many of these issues, it’s taken Rockstar nearly a year to transfer these improvements to the console and PC versions. The #GTA Definitive Editions just got an update which added the classic lighting option. Not gonna lie, it actually looks nice on a screen ******* than a phone. I’ll test now to see if the same problems still exist with it though like they did on mobile a year ago… pic.twitter.com/Qv5J68hYos — TJGM (@TJGM_) November 12, 2024 The Classic Lighting mode was a major feature requested by fans, restoring the original sky and lighting effects that were missing in the Definitive Edition. The mode is now available on all platforms, with the setting turned on by default. PC and Console Rise Back To The Top Again Image Credit: Rockstar Games These updates come after a particularly harsh three-year ******* for the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition on consoles and PC. Rockstar’s initial apology in 2021 and subsequent attempts at patching the games did little to placate fans since the bugs stayed. Comment byu/Turbostrider27 from discussion inGames Grove Street Games, the developers behind the original PC and console remasters were notably absent from this update, with all mentions of the studio removed. Grove Street Games, named after the iconic street in San Andreas, was heavily criticized following the Definitive Edition’s release for its handling of the remasters. Comment byu/Turbostrider27 from discussion inGames Following the studio’s departure from the project, Video Games Deluxe, the team behind the L.A. Noire VR Case Files, took on the mobile ports and now seems to have inspired many of the updates coming to other platforms. Despite this, the legacy of the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition ******** mixed. The disastrous 2021 launch prompted numerous refunds, and Rockstar had to pull the game from online stores temporarily to fix even more bugs. These upgrades could bring more attention to Definitive Edition and encourage new players to give it a try. With GTA 6 expected to launch in 2025, Rockstar appears to be making one final effort to satisfy the trilogy’s fans before shifting its focus entirely to the next entry in the franchise. Will you give the Definitive Edition another try with this new update? Let us know in the comments! 25. Windows 10 users: Microsoft wants you to use Windows 11, changing up its Settings app reminder banner to make sure you don’t forget Windows 10 users: Microsoft wants you to use Windows 11, changing up its Settings app reminder banner to make sure you don’t forget A new banner in the Windows Update menu will prompt users to upgrade to Windows 11 Users will be able to choose to stay with Windows 10 – for now Support for Windows 10 will officially end on October 14 next year This year’s major Windows 11 feature update, 24H2, has arrived, and Microsoft wants you to know it… especially if you’re a Windows 10 user. The tech giant has been hounding people clinging to Windows 10 with persistent, prominent, and sometimes full-screen reminders to upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft is pushing Windows 11 24H2 as the best version of Windows 11, bringing plenty of new features, especially for the newly introduced Copilot+ PCs. Its design is also being improved continuously, with Microsoft trying to make it feel polished and contemporary, and it wants to use this to try and convince Windows 10 users to embrace the newer operating system. Adding to the steady stream of reminders we saw before the rollout of 24H2, Microsoft is now trying to convince Windows 10 users to get a ‘free upgrade’ to Windows 11 on all eligible PCs. Also, with Windows 10’s end-of-support date coming up in less than a year (October 14, 2025), Microsoft is using this as an opportunity to remind Windows 10 users once again, in the hope that they will upgrade to Windows 11. Windows Latest has shared a screenshot of a banner that appears on the Windows Update page in the Settings app in Windows 10. Before, this page would urge people to upgrade to Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, but now when you click the ‘Download and install’ button in the banner, it begins downloading Windows 11 24H2 on your device. The banner also features a less prominently shown option to ‘Stay on Windows 10 for now.’ That said, Microsoft confirmed to Windows Latest that this was a deliberate banner change in Windows 10, and the inclusion of ‘for now’ suggests this is going to be a recurring notification, especially as Windows 10’s deprecation date draws closer. (Image credit: Shutterstock) Why saying goodbye to Windows 10 might be tough – so what choices are there? Many people find Windows 10’s overall look and features more polished than those of Windows 11, a common example being File Explorer and how it performs noticeably slower in Windows 11 than in Windows 10. It does look like Microsoft is making a solid effort to keep patching up troublesome parts of Windows 11, which has struggled to gain users at the same rate Windows 10 managed. Microsoft is especially keen to steer Windows 10 users to Windows 11 (and this is what it wants Windows 10 users to do), and we’ll see what these users do when Windows 10 is no longer supported. Apparently, it’s also looking to add in Windows Intelligence, Microsoft’s new catch-all umbrella brand and term for AI in Windows (which is rumored to replace Copilot). If you are determined to continue using Windows 10 for at least one more year, Microsoft will offer a service providing extended security updates after October 14, 2025, for $30 per device. Not all versions of Windows 10 will lose support after October 14, 2025, however, and there’s a more specific breakdown provided by Windows Latest that shows exactly what plans Microsoft has in store for each version. If you don’t fancy paying to keep using Windows 10, then I would recommend that you move on to Windows 11 so that you can continue to receive Microsoft’s most recent updates and security patches. This will be a tough choice for many people as Windows 10 ******** incredibly popular. Despite a rocky start with multiple faulty updates of its own, Windows 10 has become a reliable favorite, and it ******** to be seen if Windows 11 will win users over, by voluntary upgrade or otherwise.
