  2. Wake parents criticize student assignment plan, allege favoritism for board members Wake parents criticize student assignment plan, allege favoritism for board members Some Wake County parents say the school board is showing favoritism by helping fellow members, not their families, in next year’s student reassignment plan. Wake County school administrators have recommended a plan that would move thousands of students to different schools for the 2025-26 school year. During Tuesday’s school board public hearing, multiple parents questioned why school board member Lindsay Mahaffey’s Apex neighborhood was dropped from the plan after the first draft was presented in September. In an interview with The News & Observer, Mahaffey said did not ask for her neighborhood to be dropped. She said she asked staff to look at the public’s feedback on the assignment plan. “The decision came from the Office of Student Assignment,” Mahaffey said Tuesday. “It was their directive,” Mahaffey said. “It was not an advocacy for a neighborhood.” Families question dropping Mahaffey’s neighborhood Most of the plan impacts southern and southwestern Wake, where several new schools are scheduled to open in next fall. That includes the new Pleasant Plains Elementary in Apex. In the first draft of the plan, Mahaffey’s neighborhood was among multiple neighborhoods that were recommended to be moved to Pleasant Plains. But among the handful of changes staff made in the updated proposal, children who live in Mahaffey’s Bella Casa subdivision no longer will move and will now stay at Scotts Ridge Elementary. Assignment staff said dropping the neighborhood would allow Bella Casa families to be split between two elementary schools, not three. But some parents didn’t accept that explanation. They argued that it would make more sense to assign Bella Casa to Pleasant Plains because it’s closer than other neighborhoods being reassigned. “Our representative has only addressed concern for her neighborhood, which was removed from rezoning plans despite being closer to the new school,” parent Madison Hester said to the board. “Where is the equity? Where is the support for all students and not just those that sit closest to you?” Mahaffey is married to Apex Town Councilmember Terry Mahaffey. “This has totally been in favor of our representative’s neighborhood, who coincidentally has a husband sitting on the council,” said parent Christopher English. During board member comments, Mahaffey thanked the parents who spoke at the public hearing. View the Wake student assignment plan The exact number of students who could be reassigned usually isn’t provided until the final version of the assignment plan. The public can view the plan at wcpss.net/2025enrollmentproposal. People can see whether their address is affected by searching osageo.wcpss.net/enrollment-proposal-lookup. In 2025, Wake is opening Felton Grove High School in Holly Springs. The district will also open Bowling Road Elementary in Fuquay-Varina, Pleasant Plains Elementary in Apex and Rex Road Elementary in Holly Springs. New students are also being moved to take advantage of the additional capacity after a major renovation of Baucom Elementary in Apex. Thirteen parents spoke at Tuesday’s public hearing. The test for how successful parents are in keeping their children from being moved will come on Nov. 26, when administrators present any final revisions to the plan. The school board also will vote on the proposal that night. Some students who are moved will be eligible for “stability transfers,” which will allow them to stay at their current school if they provide their own transportation. Eligibility varies depending on whether students are being moved to a new or existing school and what grade level the student will be in the following year. Calendar mismatch for families One of the largest contingents at Tuesday’s public nearing were families from the Jordan Pointe and Woodbury subdivisions in Apex, who face being moved to Pleasant Plains Elementary. Jordan Pointe families want to stay at Scotts Ridge Elementary while Woodbury families want to remain at Apex Friendship Elementary. The reassignment will also mean families will change calendars because Pleasant Plains will open on a multi-track year-round calendar. The multi-track calendar can increase a school’s capacity by 20% or more by putting the building in constant use throughout the year. In October, student assignment staff said the reassignment is needed to relieve severe crowding at Apex Friendship and Scotts Ridge. Administrators also said that the year-round calendar is needed at Pleasant Plains Elementary to help with crowding and to accommodate future growth in the area. But on Tuesday, speakers said it would impose multiple hardships on families, including some students being at three different elementary schools over a four-year *******. “You, the school board, have the authority to pause, reconsider and make changes,” Hester said. “The changes you make now will have real lasting impact on students’ lives.” Jen O’Brien, parent, said she’ll spend an extra $4,200 a year on childcare because the reassignment means her children will attend schools on both year-round and traditional calendars. “Why are our families being uprooted by this burdensome and unnecessary calendar change?” O’Brien told the board. ‘You’re either lying or incompetent’ Several speakers spoke out against the reassignment of the Ashley Downs and Pearson Farms subdivisions in Apex from Olive Chapel Elementary to Baucom Elementary. Student assignment staff said it would ease overcrowding at Olive Chapel. Parents have argued the move doesn’t make sense because their children live close enough to walk to Olive Chapel. But assignment staff said a sidewalk connection involves crossing a high-speed road and Interstate 540. Parents corrected the staff, saying students cross a pedestrian bridge over the road and highway. “You’re either lying or incompetent, and I don’t know which is worse,” parent Robert Treder told the board. The studio has enlisted the help of Crowbar Collective, the team behind , the fan-made and Valve-approved Half-Life remake that needs no further introduction. Rogue Point is currently in development and slated to enter early access soon. Rogue Point is set in a dystopian future where a single CEO had controlled everything. After his ******, competing companies work to carve up his empire. To achieve this, they hire mercenaries using the MERX app, and it’s as simple as getting food using Uber Eats. Currently, only Rogue Point, a team of vigilantes, is fighting back against this dystopian state of affairs. Team17/Crowbar Collective The game pits teams of four against computer-controlled enemies of different classes, each offering unique challenges. Players must strategize and play with the right loadouts or risk losing. There’s plenty of gear to acquire, too, with some weapons only available in the mission field. Maps are procedurally generated to ensure no two playthroughs are the same. Unlocked equipment may also be used in future runs. Besides the standard campaign missions where “high-octane tactical combat meets strategic planning,” there’s an endgame mission with maxed-out difficulty, promising a challenge for those craving it. The developers have a rather extensive wishlist of features they hope to add to the game down the road. Those include new weapons (who doesn’t like new gear?), improved AI and new maps. There are currently four maps announced, but the procedural generation should make things less repetitive. Rogue Point isn’t in early access yet, but you can wishlist it on . 10. First Trailer For It's In The Game Shares The History Of Madden NFL First Trailer For It's In The Game Shares The History Of Madden NFL Before 1988, John Madden was already a NFL legend as a head coach and a TV broadcaster. But following the release of John Madden Football, Madden became a video game icon as well. The Madden franchise has endured for almost four decades, including the most recent game, Madden NFL 25. Later this month, Prime Video is exploring the history of the blockbuster series with a new documentary, It’s In the Game: Madden NFL. Now, the first trailer has arrived and revisited an era before the Madden games became events unto themselves. During the first game’s development, Madden was adamant that the title that shared his name be a true representation of football. That meant 11 players for each team on the field, which was difficult to pull off at the time. Over the decades that followed, each video game generation has allowed Madden NFL to come closer and closer to a realistic portrayal of football. Madden NFL has become so ubiquitous that it’s got its own mythology in the form of “the Madden curse.” Several athletes, including Madden NFL 25’s ********** McCaffrey, have gone on to be injured after appearing on the cover for Madden NFL. This is more likely due to the punishing physical nature of football itself, rather than any curse. But it still comes up to this day. 11. Rising NHS physician associate use questioned after Oldham ****** Rising NHS physician associate use questioned after Oldham ****** BBC/Brijesh Patel Roy Pollitt thought his late wife was being treated by a doctor rather than a physician associate A man whose wife ***** after a drain was mistakenly left in her abdomen for 21 hours has condemned the increased use of physician associates (PAs) within the National Health Service. Susan Pollitt’s inquest concluded her ****** at Royal Oldham Hospital in July 2023 had been caused by an “unnecessary medical procedure contributed to by neglect”. Roy Pollitt did not know his 77-year-old wife was being treated by a PA – who are only required to have two years’ medical training – and believes “she would have lived if the NHS had not used cheap labour”. The coroner who examined Mrs Pollitt’s ****** highlighted the lack of a national framework covering PAs’ training, supervision and competency assessment. ‘At risk’ Associates were introduced in the NHS 21 years ago with the expectation they would support doctors by delivering basic care. Over the past two years the number of associates has more than doubled to 3,000. According to the NHS Long Term Plan, there will be 12,000 physician and anaesthetic associates by 2036. Fears have been expressed, however, that some have been acting beyond their original remit. BBC News has seen evidence that in the month of Mrs Pollitt’s ******, the NHS trust which oversees Royal Oldham used PAs to cover nearly 20% of doctor shifts in elderly care. Several organisations, including the British Medical Association (BMA), have voiced concerns about the blurring of professional lines between doctors and associates across NHS trusts and primary care. Anaesthetists *******, a group set up by concerned doctors and consultants, has filed a legal claim against the General Medical Council (GMC) for not, in its view, properly defining associates’ roles and responsibilities. One of the group’s founders, consultant anaesthetist Richard Marks, said patients were “being put at risk” as a consequence, something that “strikes to the heart of you” as a doctor. BBC News has also learned that PAs have exceeded their remit in several NHS trusts, including by: Covering doctors’ shiftsPrescribing medicinesOrdering X-rays without supervision From December, associates will join doctors in being regulated by the GMC. Significant concerns remain, however, from some within the medical profession. Family photograph Roy and Susan Pollitt were married for 58 years until her ****** in July 2023 Susan Pollitt originally went to Royal Oldham Hospital with a broken arm after suffering a fall at her home in nearby Failsworth, Greater Manchester. Initially treated in a corridor, the great-grandmother was also diagnosed with an acute kidney injury. Due to a lack of gastroenterology beds, she was taken to a respiratory ward. Her daughter Kate Pollitt said staffing levels seemed “very low”, adding that on the night her mother ***** “it took nearly four hours to find a doctor in the whole of the hospital”. At Mrs Pollitt’s inquest, dozens of issues with her care came to light. Not only did the PA leave an abdominal drain – used to remove excess fluid from her body – in for 15 hours longer than permitted, but he also told colleagues to clamp it, increasing the risk of infection. It has also emerged that, in the previous year, a liver nurse only approved the associate’s competence in using the equipment because she assumed he was a doctor. Kate Pollitt said: “He thought he was doing right… but he was in a situation where he wasn’t supported. “There was too much confusion and not enough supervision.” BBC/Brijesh Patel Kate Pollitt was keen to stress she does not blame the PA who cared for her late mother The Northern Care Alliance (NCA) NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Royal Oldham, found Mrs Pollitt would probably have survived had the drain been removed earlier. Its chief medical officer, Dr Rafik Bedair, said: “We’re saddened Mrs Pollitt didn’t receive the standard of care that she should have done and we remain deeply sorry to her family for this.” He said the trust owed it to them to “learn from what went wrong and make things safer for patients in the future”. The NCA serves more than a million people across Salford, Oldham, Rochdale and Bury, as well as providing more specialist services to patients from Greater Manchester and beyond. Following Mrs Pollitt’s inquest, North Manchester Coroner Joanne Kearsley issued a Prevention of Future Deaths notice due to her concerns about PAs. The GMC agreed patient safety was at risk without effective safeguards. Its chief executive and registrar, Charlie Massey, said next month’s regulatory changes would be “a vital step towards strengthening both patient safety and public trust in these professions”. And he stressed it was down to employers to clearly define roles and, like “all regulated professionals, [associates] will be expected to work within their competence”. BBC/Adam Walker Consultant anaesthetist Richard Marks thinks patients are put at risk by PAs not being supervised effectively But consultant anaesthetist Dr Marks warned the lack of a national scope of practice – with clear limits and standards – would still put patients at risk. He said a lack of supervision for PAs had been a “key feature” in recent high-profile cases, including the ****** of 30-year-old woman from Salford. “In each one of them, had a doctor been more closely involved and seen what was going on, they would have made changes to that patient’s care,” he said. “What we’re most concerned about is that you’ve got a big increase in numbers of PAs who don’t have the depth of understanding because of their background, and who are going to be let loose on the public without adequate supervision.” Mr Marks was also worried about the fact that while doctors receive seven years of training, PAs receive two. “What you don’t know, you don’t know,” he said, with PAs “not having the skills or experience” to diagnose patients with varying levels of complexity. The Academy of Royal Colleges has also called for an independent review into the use of associates because of an “increasingly acrimonious and destructive debate”. A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “Our deepest sympathies are with Susan’s family and friends. “Patient safety is our top priority. We are urgently working with the NHS to ensure that physician associates are supporting, not replacing, doctors.” NHS England said it had issued “updated guidance on the appropriate deployment of medical associates” and would provide increased clarity about their roles. The Pollitts stressed they did not want to blame the PA for what happened, saying he had been the “only one who showed Susan – and us – any empathy”. Kate Pollitt said she only wished he had received more supervision. “You do get ****** and upset,” she said. “But there’s nothing we can do for my mum now, so there’s no point in being ****** and having that bitterness for the rest of our lives. “We just want change – it won’t mean things like this won’t ever happen again but if we can help reduce the chances then it’s worth it.” Source link #Rising #NHS #physician #associate #questioned #Oldham #****** Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  13. What Trump’s staffing picks tell us about his second-term plans What Trump’s staffing picks tell us about his second-term plans Getty Images Trump’s choice of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik for US ambassador to the UN suggests he’ll take a strong approach to relations with China. A week after Donald Trump won a second-term in the White House, the contours of his new presidency have started taking shape. The president-elect has announced nearly a dozen appointees, the first steps toward filling out his White House staff and key government departments. He also made comments to the media and on social media that highlight what his priorities will be upon taking office in January, with a special focus on immigration and foreign policy. After a sometimes chaotic start to his first term, Trump is laying the groundwork for his next administration with a more clearly defined plan – and personnel ready to enact it. Here’s a look at what we’ve learned so far. A hard-line immigration team in place Some of Trump’s newly revealed appointments suggest that the president-elect’s campaign promise to deport millions of undocumented migrants living in the US is no exaggeration. Stephen Miller, who has been Trump’s close adviser and speechwriter since 2015, will likely shape any plans for mass deportations – and pare back both undocumented and legal immigration – as Trump’s choice for White House deputy chief of staff for policy. During Trump’s first term, he was involved in developing some the administration’s strictest immigration policies. Thomas Homan, acting director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency in Trump’s first term, supported the president’s policy of separating undocumented families detained at the US-Mexico border. Now he’s back with an even broader portfolio, as Trump’s “immigration tsar”. “I will run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen,” Homan said at a ************* conference in July. Critics have warned that Trump’s mass deportation plan could cost upwards of $300b. In an interview with NBC News last week, however, the president-elect said cost was not an issue. “When people have ******* and murdered, when ***** lords have destroyed countries, and now they’re going to go back to those countries because they’re not staying here,” he said. “There is no price tag.” China hawks take flight Many conservatives believe that China poses the single greatest threat to continued US global dominance, both economically and militarily. While Trump has been more circumspect, limiting most of his China critiques to the realm of trade, he is filling his foreign policy team with vocal China critics. The president-elect picked Florida Congressman Mike Waltz, a retired Army colonel, as his national security adviser – a key foreign policy post within the White House. Waltz has said the US is in a “cold war” with China and was one of the first members of Congress to call for a US boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. In October, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Trump’s pick for US ambassador to the UN, accused China of “blatant and malicious election interference” amid reports that China-backed hackers attempted to gather information from the former president’s phones. While Trump has yet to officially name his choice for secretary of state, Florida Senator Marco Rubio – another China hawk – appears to be the leading contender for the top diplomatic job. In 2020, Rubio was sanctioned by the ******** government after he pushed measures to punish the nation for its crackdown on pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong. US-China relations were often rocky during Trump’s first term, amidst trade disputes and the Covid pandemic. The Biden administration, which kept many of Trump’s China tariffs and imposed some new ones, only somewhat calmed the waters. Now it looks like the next Trump administration will pick up where the last one left off. Elon Musk and RFK form a shadow cabinet While the list of Trump’s political appointees grows, there’s another group that stays small – and exceedingly influential. Elon Musk, the wealthiest man in the world, has been a full-time presence at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago transition headquarters. According to media reports, he is advising the president-elect on cabinet nominees and even joined a conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week. On Tuesday night, Trump announced that he was assigning Musk to work with tech entrepreneur and former *********** presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy in a “department of government efficiency” tasked with identifying new budget cuts. Musk has regularly offered his political opinions on his social media platform X, including endorsing Florida Senator Rick Scott’s bid to be the next Senate majority leader. Musk’s political action committee spent around $200m to help Trump’s presidential campaign, and he promises to continue to fund the group’s efforts to advance the president-elect’s agenda and help *********** candidates in upcoming congressional elections. Meanwhile, it ******** to be seen where Robert F Kennedy Jr, another key figure, lands. Trump has said that he plans to give the former Democrat and vaccine sceptic, who abandoned his independent bid and endorsed the ***********, a role in making America “healthy” again. “He wants to do some things, and we’re going to let him go to it,” Trump said in his election victory speech. Prioritising presidential power over Congress As Trump takes office, Republicans have control of the Senate and could still take the House, albeit by a slim margin. However, the president-elect’s early actions suggest he is more concerned with exercising his presidential power than working with the legislative branch. Last week, he posted on social media that the Senate’s *********** leadership should smooth the way for more presidential “recess appointments” – allowing him to fill top administration jobs without Senate approval when Congress is not in session. The move would strengthen presidential power by undercutting the chamber’s constitutional role to “advise and consent” on political appointees. Meanwhile, the president-elect keeps chipping away at those narrow congressional majorities. Senators who move to administration roles can quickly be replaced by appointment from the governor of their home state. But any House vacancies – such as ones created by Stefanik and Waltz’s departures – require special elections that can take months to schedule. Some of Trump’s advisors, including Musk, have warned that the president-elect could be endangering his legislative agenda if he plucks too many more Republicans from the chambers. Even in the best of circumstances, congressional legislation takes time, effort and compromise. Executive action, such as new immigration enforcement, can be done with the ******* of a presidential pen. Trump’s actions indicate he is, at least at the moment, more focused on the latter. Rewarding loyalists Trump has only just begun filling out the thousands of jobs that open up with a new presidential administration, not including the senior-level career bureaucrats he has said he will replace. In 2016, as a political newcomer, he had to rely on more establishment Republicans for key roles. This time, he has a wealth of prospective candidates with proven track records of supporting him and after eight years, Trump loyalists are the *********** establishment. On Tuesday, Trump named South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as homeland security secretary, and Fox News host and ************* author Pete Hegseth as defence secretary. Both have been fierce Trump defenders from the start. Others, like Rubio and Stefanik, were critics of Trump early in his first presidential bid, but they have now spent years demonstrating that their harsh words are a thing of the past. Rubio, who ran for president against Trump in 2016, may still have White House ambitions, however. Trump often soured on appointees who seemed drawn to the limelight during his first term, and even the warmest of relationships could go bad. Trump may be placing a premium on loyalty with his early staff announcements, but the pressures of governing ultimately will reveal whether his second four years in office end up different than his first. The Daily Mirror says his resignation letter spoke of his “sorrow” for Smyth’s victims and expressed a “profound sense of shame” over the episode. The Metro says Mr Welby’s resignation comes after criticism from bishops and victims as well as a petition – started by a member of the *******’s parliament, the General Synod – that gained 12,000 signatures. The resignation has thrown the ******* into “crisis”, according to the Daily Mail. The paper says victims of Smyth’s ****** have insisted Mr Welby must not be a “sacrifical lamb” and other senior clergy must go. The Times says the resignation is without precedent since the position of Archbishop of Canterbury was established 1,427 years ago, but adds senior colleagues of Mr Welby’s have said it was necessary in order to “change the face” of how the ******* handles cases of ******. Columnist Allison Pearson says two officers came to her home on Sunday to tell her about the investigation, but were unable to say which post it concerned or who had made the complaint. The paper says that this time last year Pearson was posting a lot about the 7 October attacks on ******* and the subsequent pro-************ protests in London. Essex Police tells it the investigation relates to a now-deleted post and was opened under laws prohibiting material “likely or intended to cause ******* hatred”. A row has “kicked off” over the question of who should replace Gary Lineker as host of Match of the Day, according to the Sun. The paper says the BBC wants Mark Chapman and Kelly Somers to alternate as hosts, but insiders have told it Chapman isn’t keen on the idea. A source is quoting saying: “It’s a headache for the BBC”. And the Financial Times says Saudi Arabia and the UAE have both signalled their commitment to improving relations with Iran as they prepare for the return of Donald Trump as US president. The paper says both countries cheered Trump’s more confrontational approach to Iran during his first term, but that they are now increasingly aware of their vulnerability to Iranian hostility and keen to avoid further tensions. A senior ***** diplomat is quoted saying: “If Trump puts you in a situation where you have to decide, because he’s going against Iran, it’s a big problem”. 17. New Zealand to limit online casino gambling licences New Zealand to limit online casino gambling licences New Zealand is proposing to limit the number of licences for online casino gambling operators and will require them to set up an age verification system as well as ban ads aimed at children. Offenders will be fined up to NZ$US5 million ($A7.7 million), with the new regulatory system expected to be in place from early 2026, Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden said on Wednesday. “My goal is not to increase the amount of gambling that is happening online, but to enable New Zealanders who wish to play casino games online to do so more safely than they can today,” Van Velden said in a statement. “Currently, New Zealanders can and do gamble on thousands of offshore gambling websites. By introducing a regulatory system my intention is to channel customers towards up to fifteen licensed operators.” The government in July said it would set up licences for online casinos, require operators to limit their offerings to online casino games, not sports ******** or lottery products, and impose a minimum age of 18 for players. Online casino gambling is not regulated in New Zealand and so consumer protection requirements do not apply. With the convenience and accessibility of online platforms and due to the increasing popularity of smartphones, more customers in New Zealand are opting to gamble online, according to research firm Statista. Revenue from such platforms could see an annual growth of around six per cent between 2024 and 2029, it said. Further regulations will be developed based on the existing gambling law that would help finalise rules on advertising and consumer protection requirements, Van Velden said. The government aims to introduce the bill in parliament next year. Source link #Zealand #limit #online #casino #gambling #licences Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

For an affordable option that features a clean sound signature that’s tuned for first-person shooters, it’s hard to go wrong with the Drop and Epos PC38X. Epos may not be a household name, but most people have definitely heard of Sennheiser. The former came out of the latter, and that should tell you what to expect from the PC38X. It’s a headset that has more in common with classic headphones like the HD600 than its gaming peers. An open-back design helps the PC38X produce an immersive sound stage that can give users an edge in games like Valorant and Call of Duty: Warzone. The built-in microphone is one of the best ones you’ll find on a gaming headset at this price. It’s a wired headset too, meaning there’s no need to worry about battery life and compatibility. 20. How to catch the last supermoon of 2024 How to catch the last supermoon of 2024 Stargazers can catch the full ******* moon on Friday afternoon and the final supermoon of the year will appear ******* and brighter than usual. NASA says that the moon will reach peak illumination starting at 4:29 p.m. EST with the sun setting that evening just a few minutes later, at 4:38 p.m. Supermoons occur as a regular part of the moon’s orbit of Earth, according to NASA research scientist Dennis Gallagher. “The moon’s orbit takes it around the Earth about once every 27 and one-third days,” Gallagher said in a blog post. “That time of closest approach to Earth, or perigee, happens three or four times each year due to the motions of Earth and the moon around the sun.” The ******* moon, of course, is named for the animal itself. Beavers are the largest living rodents in North America and are known for their long, flat tails which they use to swim faster, balance, and make loud alarm calls. With large orange teeth, they cut down trees and other vegetation for food and building materials. A supermoon rises over Huntsville, Alabama, last August. Supermoons are the biggest and brightest full mons of the year. The last supermoon rise, the full ******* moon, rises on Friday. (Credits: NASA/Michael DeMocker) November is the month that beavers fortify their dams and stock up on food, preparing for the harsh winter months. It was also the month that hunters would trap beavers for their thick, winter clothing. Beavers were nearly eliminated from much of their normal range in the late 1800s because of unregulated trapping. Populations right now are stable and they’ve re-established much of that area. There are an estimated 15 million beavers in the US today. Researchers are using NASA satellites to monitor impacts of ******* restoration on the landscape. The beavers help make places more resilient to drought and wildfire. (Credits: NASA/Boise State University) And, beavers have additional significance for the space agency. NASA helps to measure the impacts of ******* rewilding in Idaho. The project uses NASA’s Earth-observing satellites to track the landscape’s transformation after beavers arrive. These efforts help researchers at local universities to better understand the pace and nuance of ******* impacts without having to send people into remote areas. NASA said that data showed when the semiaquatic mammals build dams across streams, they naturally disperse and hold water on the land longer. This creates habitats and supports more plants. The dams also create more fresh drinking water, make the landscape more resilient, and provide better grazing land for cattle. “I think, in a lot of ways, this ******* idea is starting to catch on. I think a lot of people are realizing that without beavers these watersheds basically deteriorate,” Jay Wilde, an Idaho cattle rancher, told NASA last year. David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images 23andMe on Tuesday reported declining revenue in its most recent quarter, a day after the company said it will cut 40% of its workforce and shutter its therapeutics business as part of a business restructuring plan. The embattled genetics company reported $44.1 million in revenue for the fiscal second quarter, down from $50 million in the same ******* last year. 23andMe’s net loss narrowed to $59.1 million, or $2.32 per share, from $75.27 million, or $3.17 per share, a year ago. 23andMe said Monday that it’s eliminating more than 200 jobs, discontinuing all its therapeutics programs and winding down its ongoing clinical trials “as quickly as practical.” It’s evaluating strategic options such as asset sales and licensing agreements to “maximize the value” of the therapeutic programs, the release said. “We are taking these difficult but necessary actions as we restructure 23andMe and focus on the long-term success of our core consumer business and research partnerships,” 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki, said in the release Monday. “I want to thank our team for their hard work and dedication to our mission. We are fully committed to supporting the employees impacted by this transition.” The company said Tuesday that it’s looking to potentially raise additional capital. Shares of 23andMe closed up 2% on Tuesday. They’ve slumped about 75% this year after losing more than half their value in 2023, pushing the company’s market cap toward $100 million. Wojcicki, who co-founded 23andMe in 2006, has been working to keep the company afloat after it faced the risk of being delisted from the Nasdaq. Shares were hovering below $1 until 23andMe announced a 1-for-20 reverse stock split in October. In September, all seven of the company’s independent directors abruptly resigned from the board, writing in a letter that they disagreed with Wojcicki about the “strategic direction for the company.” Three new independent directors were appointed to the board in late October. “We have fulfilled our obligations as a public company and regained compliance with the NASDAQ listing standards by reconstituting our board and executing a reverse stock split,” Wojcicki said during 23andMe’s earnings call Tuesday. Wojcicki has repeatedly said she intends to take 23andMe private, though she didn’t address the plans Tuesday. In a September filing with the SEC, she said she would not consider third-party takeover proposals, and said the “best path forward” is for her to take the company private. 23andMe declined to comment. 23. Netflix’s ad tier has attracted more than 70 million subscribers Netflix’s ad tier has attracted more than 70 million subscribers Netflix is crowing that its ad-supported tier now boasts 70 million users throughout the globe, . The company announced 40 million users back in May, so this is some real growth. The streamer has been slowly ramping up its ad tier, . Amy Reinhard, president of advertising at Netflix, says that the company continues “to see steady progress across all countries’ member bases.” She also noted that over 50 percent of new Netflix sign-ups are for these ad-supported plans. The transformation of streaming into regular TV is nearly complete. There’s one major potential caveat. The company released the aforementioned data regarding new sign-ups, which is impressive, but there isn’t any information regarding pre-existing customers. It’s highly possible a whole lot of people downgraded from a premium tier to an ad-supported tier. I’m one of them. I don’t mind watching an ad or two as I mindlessly stuff food down my gullet while pseudo-watching an episode of The Diplomat or The Circle. In other words, there’s an argument to be made that the ad-supported tier could be eating into the more expensive offerings. There’s also an argument to be made that this year’s growth spurt for the ad-supported tier could attract companies with deeper ad-spending budgets, thus making up the difference. Netflix is on Christmas Day, and it says it has already sold out all available commercial inventory. The streamer is actually ******** big on live streams, with wrestling events, cooking shows and talk shows all airing in the near future. Errich Petersen | Getty Images OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman has returned to the company as president, three months after announcing he would take a sabbatical “through end of year.” On Tuesday, he posted on X that the “longest vacation” of his life was complete and that he was “back to building OpenAI.” Brockman’s return comes more than a month after OpenAI closed its latest funding round at a valuation of $157 billion. In the time he was gone, an increasing number of executives departed and the company faced heightened controversy surrounding its upcoming conversion to a for-profit structure and its decision to shutter certain safety teams. In late September, OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati announced she would depart the company after six and a half years. The same day, research chief Bob McGrew and Barret Zoph, a research vice president, said they were leaving. OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and former safety leader Jan Leike announced their departures in May, with Leike joining rival Anthropic. Co-founder John Schulman said in August that he was also leaving for Anthropic. And last week, Lilian Weng, OpenAI’s vice president of research and safety, announced she would depart after seven years at the company. Brockman has long been an ally of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who was abruptly fired and then swiftly reinstated a year ago. The company debuted in 2015 as a nonprofit with Brockman as chief technology officer and Altman as CEO. Following Altman’s temporary ouster, Brockman shared a post on X that he quit. He also wrote in a post at the time that both he and Altman were “shocked and saddened by what the board did today.” WATCH: OpenAI takes on Google with ChatGPT search Source link #OpenAI #cofounder #Greg #Brockman #returns #months #leave Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  25. ***** Executive Wants To Make The Company Into The Next Disney ***** Executive Wants To Make The Company Into The Next Disney Between the upcoming sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, as well as the recently announced Shinobi movie, and Prime Video’s Like a Dragon series, ***** has done very well for itself in Hollywood in the last few years. However, the company has even greater ambitions of becoming a media giant in the tradition of Disney, and a former Disney executive is trying to make that goal a reality. After spending 17 years at Disney, Justin Scarpone was hired to as *****’s head of global transmedia earlier this year. While speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Scarpone noted that most video game companies haven’t followed Disney and Marvel’s examples of utilizing their properties across all media. But he plans to change that at *****. “Gaming is [today] the irreplaceable form of entertainment for the entire world, far greater than any other form of entertainment, [and] it’s high time that there is a replication of the studio system from Hollywood for the gaming industry,” said Scarpone. “Game companies don’t have that content flywheel history that Walt Disney basically invented, of taking that IP and having a five-year, ten-year roadmap of content, like [Marvel executive] Kevin Feige does for the films. And connecting that into all the other businesses and evolving story over these different experiences, you know, content product and services.” Scarpone also noted that Shadow the Hedgehog’s prominent role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic X Shadow Generations was an example of the crossover content that he wants ***** to pursue. “[There are] things we’re doing on other channels: Shadow merchandise, Shadow character appearances,” added Scarpone. “We want to turn Shadow into an evergreen, individual character. That’s all planned.” “I think *****’s positioned to grow on the back of this evolution of our company into an entertainment company,” continued Scarpone. “There’s other gaming companies going in the same direction and with varying degrees of success, that we respect, and Nintendo is a great one, right? They’re sort of the big brother to all the ********* game companies… But I think we’re doing pretty good and there’s a lot of more opportunities for us to evolve what the ***** brand means to consumers around the world. So that’s what I want to achieve.” Source link #***** #Executive #Company #Disney Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
