The full video game console generation timeline The full video game console generation timeline Table of Contents Table of Contents First generation: 1972 – 1983 Second generation: 1976 – 1985 Third generation: 1983 – 1990 Fourth generation: 1987 – 1996 Fifth generation: 1993 – 2002 Sixth generation: 1998 – 2005 Seventh generation: 2005 – 2013 Eighth generation: 2012 – 2020 Ninth generation: 2020 – present Video games are still a young medium in the grand scheme of things, but have been around for well over 50 years now. After the arcade ***** in the 70s, home consoles slowly took over the gaming landscape with Nintendo’s NES leading the charge. The NES is one of the best video game consoles of all time, but it was far from the first console and certainly not the last with the likes of the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Switch 2 currently fighting for market dominance. Currently, we’re in the ninth generation of consoles but how exactly did we get here, and what consoles were in the eight prior generations? Let’s rewind time and look at what defined every console generation from the first up to today. If you want to look even further ahead, we can also tell you about every upcoming video game console and upcoming video game. Note that generations weren’t as clearly defined for the first several decades so the specific years some generations start or end is up for debate and many generations will overlap. We will also only list well-documented consoles released in each generation to avoid bloating the list with one-off systems no one purchased. First generation: 1972 – 1983 Magnavox Going all the way back to the origins of home consoles, we are at a point where most games don’t even resemble the experiences we have today. The most recognizable game in this era was one of the best games of all-time, Pong. In this generation, consoles were essentially smaller arcade machines in the sense that most could only play one or two games. The main exception, and most famous console from this generation, was the Magnavox Odyssey. This console included various plastic overlays you could put on your screen to play different games with as you moved blocks of light around the screen. Notable consoles in the first generation: Magnavox Odyssey Ping-O-Tronic Home Pong series TV Tennis Electrotennis Coleco Telstar Color TV-Game Second generation: 1976 – 1985 Giovanni Colantonio / Digital Trends The second console generation is where we start to see some names that still exist today. The Atari 2600 and 5200 both arrived this generation in the late ’70s and early ’80s, setting the standard for cartridge-based consoles. However, it wasn’t the first to pioneer this technology. The Fairchild Channel F is widely accepted as the first widely available home console to fully allow for consoles to read ROM cartridges and process new code. This, along with a more user-friendly joystick controller, paved the way for the likes of Atari to dominate the generation and become the leader in home consoles over Magnavox, Coleco, and Intellivision. This era was also when Activision first entered the game space and became the first-ever third-party developer of games. This is the generation we got some of the first truly great home console games like Space Invaders, Combat, Super Breakout, Missile Command, and Pitfall! Notable consoles in the second generation: Fairchild Channel F Atari 2600 Magnavox Odyssey 2 Intellivision ColecoVision Atari 5200 Third generation: 1983 – 1990 Nintendo For most people, home consoles really started with the third generation when Nintendo entered the American market with the Nintendo Entertainment System and pulled the entire gaming industry back from collapse. Games evolved into the 8-bit era, which is a style many creators still emulate today, especially with some of the best indie games. Atari was still in the game with the 7800, but was a distant third behind the power of Nintendo and newcomer ***** with its Master System. While rudimentary by today’s standards, game production in this generation was unlike anything before it. There were more colors, sounds, and even basic storytelling. It wasn’t just the home console market Nintendo upended, but handhelds as well. The Game Boy was the most sophisticated handheld ever released. It was the first to not only take advantage of cartridges but also offer console-like quality experiences on the go. This is the era where major gaming icons first appeared on consoles, like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Kirby. Notable consoles in the third generation: NES Master System Atari 7800 Atari XEGS Game Boy Fourth generation: 1987 – 1996 Digital Trends The fourth generation is where the “console wars” officially began. ***** was out for blood with the 16-bit Genesis, which easily outclassed the NES for a few years before the SNES arrived. ***** also tried to push more hardware out faster than the competition with add-ons to the Genesis, such as the ***** CD, to take advantage of the new CD technology that allowed for more storage space and use of full-motion video. Neo Geo, an arcade powerhouse, also dipped its toes into the home console space but failed to find much footing due to charing far more than the competition. The 16-bit era is one of the most fondly remembered thanks to some amazing games that are still played today. Games like Super Mario World, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Super Metroid are considered all-time classics. Notable consoles in the fourth generation: ***** Genesis Neo Geo SNES ***** CD CD-i Fifth generation: 1993 – 2002 Sony The jump from 16-bit graphics to fully 3D games is arguably the largest generational leap ever seen in console gaming. After being burned as a partner with Nintendo, Sony entered the console business as a new player with its PlayStation. It was far from the first CD-based console, but it managed to completely dominate the generation with a combination of fantastic PS1 games like Metal Gear Solid, Twisted Metal, and ****** Bandicoot, plus the brilliant marketing move of allowing the console to also play CDs. This is a tactic PlayStation would soon use to even greater effect. While it lagged behind in terms of sales, the N64 proved that Nintendo understood 3D game design far better than the competition. ***** especially struggled to translate its franchises into this new dimension, plus was also losing its customers’ faith with how quickly it was releasing new hardware. This would also mark the last major console from Atari. On the handheld side, Nintendo was still essentially unchallenged. It released the upgraded Game Boy Color to enhance its games with more than two-tone screen, but even more powerful competition like the Nomad or Neo Geo Pocket couldn’t overtake Nintendo’s stranglehold on the space. Notable consoles in the fifth generation: Atari Jaguar 3DO ***** Saturn ***** 32X PlayStation Nintendo 64 Game Boy Color Neo Geo Pocket Genesis Nomad Sixth generation: 1998 – 2005 ***** At this point in the timeline, the number of players in the home console space was shrinking to a few powerhouses. This was *****’s last gasp with the Dreamcast before it would throw in the towel on hardware and focus on publishing, but not for a lack of great Dreamcast games. Nintendo was still feeling the pressure from both Sony and Microsoft with its first console, the Xbox. Despite great games like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Pikmin, and Animal Crossing, it couldn’t match the success of either rival. Xbox had a very strong start not only because of a strong lineup of games, most notably Halo: Combat Evolved, but technical innovations like a streamlined online console multiplayer experience through Xbox Live. Despite that, it was now the only real competition in town for handheld games and finally released a true Game Boy successor with the Game Boy Advance. It goes without saying that the PS2 crushed this generation to the point where it remains the best-selling console ever made. Games played a big part in that, but what made it such a phenomenon and reach the widest possible audience was the fact that it was the only console that doubled as a DVD player. Notable consoles in the sixth generation: Seventh generation: 2005 – 2013 Microsoft Also known as the HD-era, the seventh generation firmly established the three-way console war between Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox. Home consoles were now completely mainstream and games were breaking media records left and right. Xbox and PlayStation’s latest systems were attempting to transition into more than just video game machines, but complete entertainment boxes with more app integration and online services. Xbox Live really came into its own for online multiplayer, which PlayStation also adapted to with a competing online and PlayStation Plus service. Console exclusives were the main differences between systems now, with Xbox building a reputation on games like Halo, Gears of War, and Forza while PlayStation established franchises like Uncharted, Infamous, and The Last of Us. Nintendo made its first major gamble with a console and decided against competing directly with Xbox and PlayStation and instead stuck to SD graphics but instead focused on a system fully built on motion controls. The Wii, despite its lack of power, was such a cultural moment that it finally brought Nintendo back to the top of the sales charts on the back of games like Wii Sports, Mario Galaxy, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. PlayStation also made its first attempt to get a cut of the handheld market with the PSP competing against Nintendo’s new DS line. Notable consoles in the seventh generation: Eighth generation: 2012 – 2020 PlayStation Even when the PS2 was the clear dominant force of its generation, Xbox and Nintendo were still both healthy competitors. The eighth generation was one of massive missteps for everyone except PlayStation, letting its PS4 run away with the lead right up until the very end. The Xbox One got off to a terrible start with poor messaging that focused on media over games, DRM restrictions, and requiring the motion sensor Kinect that increased the price by $100 over the PS4. On the other hand, Nintendo tried to recreate the same success with the Wii U, and even launched it two years before the PS4 and Xbox One, but also failed in its communication leading to the worst-performing system in the company’s history. Thankfully the new 3DS handheld was doing well, but Nintendo made the call to cut its generation short and launched the Switch in 2017. Merging its home console and hybrid systems together ended up being a brilliant move that completely turned the company’s outlook. PlayStation took one last shot at the handheld market with the Vita, but it ended up falling short of what the PSP managed to do by a large margin. Notable consoles in the eighth generation: Ninth generation: 2020 – present Future Publishing/Getty Images That brings us to the ninth and current console generation. Despite its best efforts Xbox continues to struggle with its Xbox Series X and S systems compared the the PS5, although both systems had a rocky start due to supply constraints. Xbox made some of the biggest acquisitions in industry history this generation with the likes of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard but is also moving away from console-exclusive games. It remains to be seen if it will continue to invest in hardware or pivot to a third-party publisher like ***** before it. Nintendo continued to enjoy the popularity of the Switch even after Xbox and PlayStation released hardware that dwarfed its technical power. At long last, it is releasing the Switch 2 to lessen the gap, though likely not completely erase it. This generation also saw the rise of handheld PCs that blur the line between PC gaming and consoles. The Steam Deck was the first to break into this space in a big way with a system that made it easy to play the best Steam games on a handheld, with many others following suit. There are still a few years left to go in this generation but we do have an idea of what upcoming consoles might look like that will define the tenth generation. Notable consoles in the ninth generation: PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X/S Steam Deck Switch 2 Source link #full #video #game #console #generation #timeline Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Nvidia loses more than $500 billion in market value after ******** AI startup bursts onto scene Nvidia loses more than $500 billion in market value after ******** AI startup bursts onto scene Two men walk past signage for Nvidia in Santa Clara, Calif., in 2017. Shares of chipmaker Nvidia plunged Monday, for its worst day since the global market sell-off in March 2020 triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. The plunge came amid a global tech stock sell-off over fears about America’s leadership in the AI sector. Those fears were largely sparked by advances claimed by a ******** artificial intelligence startup. Shares of the chipmaker, one of the primary beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence ***** in tech stocks, plummeted as much as 18%. That pushed Nvidia’s market value below $3 trillion. Still, shares of the firm are up more than 480% over the last two years. The drop accounted for more than $520 billion in lost market value though. If shares of the tech giant close at this level, it would be the biggest market value drop in U.S. stock market history, according to Bloomberg. And it would be nearly double the second worst drop in history, also seen by Nvidia shareholders in September 2024, when the company shed $279 billion in value. For some perspective, the amount of market value lost by Nvidia on Monday is more than the entire market value of Exxon Mobil, Costco, Home Depot or Bank of America. Due to the AI-fueled surge in mega-cap tech stocks, Nvidia catapulted into the top five most valuable companies in the world in 2023. The surge didn’t stop there, with the company soaring past Alphabet, Microsoft and the most valuable company in the world: Apple. At its most recent peak, Nvidia reached a towering $3.7 trillion. With Monday’s losses, Apple has retaken the title of world’s most valuable company and Nvidia’s value sank to around $2.8 trillion. Nvidia’s drop also pulled the Dow Jones Industrial Average lower by more than 130 points. Nvidia joined the prestigious 30-stock index in November, replacing rival chipmaker Intel. The Nasdaq Composite, which more closely tracks publicly traded tech companies, slid around 3%. The global sell-off in tech stocks also meant the S&P Technology sector fell into the red for the year so far, the only sector lower over that time. The winter ‘quademic’? You may be sick with one of these 4 viruses – National The winter ‘quademic’? You may be sick with one of these 4 viruses – National Sneezing, fever, chills, vomiting, coughing — it’s not just one virus wreaking havoc this winter; it’s a combination of four major illnesses: influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), COVID 19 and norovirus. In the United States, some health experts are referring to the simultaneous spread of these four viruses as a “quademic.” But is the same spread happening in Canada? “I think we are experiencing something very similar,” said Matthew Miller, the director of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont. “Our low COVID levels are still as high as many of the other viruses which are, nearing peak. For RSV it looks like we’ve reached that peak already, and for influenza A, cases are still shooting up,” he told Global News. Story continues below advertisement While cases of these three respiratory illnesses are high in Canada, there’s another virus on the rise as well: norovirus, also known as the stomach bug. 5:34 Winter viruses in full swing Influenza, RSV and COVID-19 are primarily spread through respiratory droplets, while norovirus is mainly transmitted through contaminated surfaces and is so resilient it can even survive hand sanitizer, Miller said. And during the colder winter months, as people spend more time indoors in close proximity, the risk of spreading all four viruses increases, creating the perfect conditions for a surge in infections. “Certainly these months are the usual peak of what we would call respiratory virus season and it happens for a variety of reasons. One is that the weather conditions in the winter favour the viruses’ ability to transmit. So the coldness and the relative lack of humidity help the virus sort of live longer on surfaces and transmit better in the air,” Miller explained. Story continues below advertisement “In addition, the forced air heating in our houses also tends to dry out our nose and throat, what we call our mucosal membranes. And that wetness and stickiness that lines our nose and throat is actually our first line of defence against bugs. It keeps a protective layer between viruses and our cells.” When our noses dry out, especially at night while we’re sleeping, it becomes easier for viruses to enter our body, he added. Here’s a look at the four big viruses circulating in Canada. Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious viral infection that affects the respiratory system, including the nose, throat and lungs. It is caused primarily by the influenza viruses, A and B, according to Health Canada. Story continues below advertisement Symptoms include fever, cough, chills, fatigue, headache, sore throat, loss of appetite and nasal congestion. The latest data from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), covering the week of Jan. 18 to Jan. 24, shows influenza numbers are on the rise. There were a total of 5,162 detections of influenza from 37,997 tests, representing a percent positivity of 13.6 per cent from that week, PHAC said. 4:16 Vancouver doctor on rising flu and RSV numbers in B.C. Despite the rise in cases, the number of confirmed influenza outbreaks has remained “generally stable” over the past three weeks, PHAC added. Get weekly health news Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday. Among the reported cases, people aged 65 and older accounted for the highest proportion of weekly detections. RSV is a common respiratory virus that affects the lungs and airways. It’s especially known for causing infections in young kids, older adults and people with weak immune systems, Health Canada said. Story continues below advertisement For most healthy people, RSV may just show mild, cold-like symptoms, but it can lead to more serious breathing problems for those in higher-risk groups. Symptoms in mild cases include a runny nose, coughing, sneezing, mild fever and a sore throat. In more severe cases, it can cause wheezing, rapid breathing, shortness of breath and bluish colour around the lips or fingers. 2:01 RSV, influenza and COVID on the rise in Alberta The latest data from PHAC, covering the week of Jan. 18 to Jan. 24, shows there were a total of 3,040 detections of RSV from 35,016 tests, representing a percent positivity of 8.7 per cent. People aged 65 to 84 years reported the highest proportion of weekly detections. The overall rate of RSV cases is stabilizing, PHAC added. Story continues below advertisement COVID-19 is another respiratory illness, but it’s caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The COVID-19 strain that is dominating in Canada this winter season is K.P3, a sub-lineage of the omicron strain. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, headache, muscle pain, vomiting and congestion or a runny nose, according to PHAC. The latest data from PHAC, covering the week of Jan. 18 to Jan. 24, shows the percentage of tests positive for COVID-19 decreased by 8.3 per cent. “The number of test-confirmed outbreaks associated with COVID-19 reported by participating provinces and territories has been generally decreasing over the past four weeks,” PHAC stated. Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It’s often referred to as the stomach flu, though it’s not related to the flu. Story continues below advertisement Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fatigue, a low-grade fever, chills and a headache. Unlike COVID-19, influenza and RSV, Canada does not release weekly reporting numbers for norovirus. Trending Now Health experts call Alberta COVID-19 report an attempt to ‘rewrite history’ Survey says more young Canadians believe the history of the Holocaust is exaggerated “Unfortunately, in Canada, we don’t have real-time public reporting, but certainly there have been lots and lots of reports of viral gastroenteritis over the last several weeks. So we’re experiencing high numbers of those as well,” Miller said. “The virus is usually a very ****** 24-hour bug. They rip through classrooms and workplaces and households, and put a lot of stress on the plumbing systems, but largely do not cause a lot of hospital admissions.” 4:34 How to manage symptoms of the highly infectious Norovirus However, Miller emphasized that the primary concern with norovirus is dehydration, making it especially important to stay well-hydrated. Story continues below advertisement Last month, preliminary data from PHAC showed that norovirus infections are being reported nationwide at rates higher than the five-year average from 2019 to 2023. And an Ontario public health official recently confirmed that norovirus was detected in a group of 190 people at the University of Guelph who reported symptoms of gastroenteritis over the past week. Can you tell which virus you have? With COVID-19, people got used to reliable at-home tests that could quickly confirm if they were infected, Miller said. But the reality, he said, is that for most people, diagnostic tests for common respiratory infections are rarely used because the results often don’t lead to any specific medical action (such as staying home and getting plenty of liquids and sleep). “Viruses like RSV, influenza and COVID-19 normally present with at least some type of respiratory symptom, like coughing, sneezing, runny nose alongside things like fever or chills or tiredness,” he explained. Story continues below advertisement “Those are almost impossible for the average person to distinguish from one another. But things like COVID and especially influenza, tend to cause more severe symptoms of fever and chills and lethargy than what we would consider the common cold,” he said. Although respiratory infections can be difficult to differentiate, norovirus is often a bit clearer. “For norovirus, the big differentiator is that it is characterized almost always by very severe gastrointestinal symptoms. So very severe acute diarrhea, nausea, sometimes vomiting. Those symptoms are less common with the respiratory viruses,” Miller said. When it comes to treating these viruses, he recommended using over-the-counter remedies to manage symptoms and discomfort, while also getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated. “If you get severely ill, obviously it’s important to seek medical care,” he added. Miller emphasized that the best protection against these viruses is vaccination. Story continues below advertisement The influenza vaccine is still available, even at this time of year, so it’s not too late to get it. Additionally, there’s the COVID-19 vaccine, an RSV vaccine for older adults and expectant mothers, and an antibody treatment for newborns to protect against RSV. While there is currently no vaccine for norovirus, one could soon be on the way. The American pharmaceutical company Moderna is developing an mRNA-based vaccine for norovirus and plans to submit a marketing application to U.S. health regulators in 2026. 5:42 Sniffle Season Solutions: A parent’s guide to coughs, colds, and kids Miller also stressed that proper handwashing and staying at home when you’re sick are important defences against viruses. While hand sanitizer works well against the spread of influenza and COVID-19, Miller warned that norovirus is exceptionally infectious and can persist in the environment. Story continues below advertisement Unfortunately, hand sanitizer is ineffective at killing it. “The virus that causes norovirus spreads on surfaces and it can stay there for a very long time. Hand sanitizer is nearly useless for norovirus. So conventional hand washing is much better,” he said. “Handwashing is meant to actually remove the virus from your hand. And so hand-washing when available should always be preferred over hand sanitizer.” More on Health More videos Source link #winter #quademic #sick #viruses #National Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

DeepSeek vs. US Tech Giants: The Battle for AI Supremacy and Its Market Impact DeepSeek vs. US Tech Giants: The Battle for AI Supremacy and Its Market Impact Global markets have started a busy week with a lot of volatility as the little-known ******** artificial intelligence model called ‘DeepSeek’ sparked a selloff in AI-related shares, with megacap stocks including Nvidia (NASDAQ:) the worst hit. ******** startup DeepSeek has launched a free assistant that uses cheaper chips and less data. This move seems to challenge the common belief in financial markets that AI will boost demand for everything from chipmakers to data centers. A bubble waiting to burst or is that a premature assumption? Let us take a look. What is DeepSeek? DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd., started in 2023, is quickly becoming important in the world of AI. Based in China, DeepSeek focuses on pushing AI research forward. Their big goal is to create Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which is AI that can understand, learn, and do tasks like a human in many different areas. Even though they’re just starting out, DeepSeek’s fast progress shows they’re serious about influencing the future of smart systems. Origins and Mission DeepSeek was founded during a pivotal time for AI, as breakthroughs in generative AI models like ChatGPT sparked global interest in advanced machine learning. Although the founders are not widely named, they reportedly include experienced professionals from China’s tech industry and academia, bringing together skills in AI research, software engineering, and strategic innovation. Their goal for DeepSeek is to move beyond the limits of narrow AI systems, which are great at specific tasks, by creating AGI that can generalize knowledge and adapt to new challenges. The name “DeepSeek” means “deep exploration” or “in-depth pursuit,” highlighting its focus on foundational research and innovative applications. This mission aligns with China’s national strategy to lead in AI innovation, as outlined in initiatives like the Next Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan. Technological Focus and Early Developments DeepSeek focuses on several key areas in AI development: AGI Research: DeepSeek works on technologies like large language models, reinforcement learning, and multimodal AI to create models that can think, be creative, and understand context. Industry Applications: Besides AGI, DeepSeek makes useful AI tools for healthcare, finance, education, and self-driving systems. Their tools are being tested for things like medical diagnosis and personalized learning. Ethical AI: DeepSeek focuses on ethical rules and safety measures to make sure AI is developed responsibly, following global standards. Leadership and Shareholders DeepSeek’s leadership team includes AI researchers, engineers, and executives with backgrounds in top ******** tech companies and universities. The company hasn’t revealed its shareholders, but it’s probably supported by private investors, venture capital, and partners who share China’s AI goals. It’s possible, though not confirmed, that state-affiliated groups are involved, given the importance of AGI. DeepSeek and its Open Source Model Like its Western competitors Chat-GPT, Meta’s Llama, and Claude, DeepSeek uses a large-language model, which means it trains on huge amounts of text to understand everyday language. However, unlike Silicon Valley companies that keep their models private, DeepSeek is open source. This means anyone can access its code, see how it works, and even change it. Jim Fan, a senior research manager at Nvidia, said on X that DeepSeek is keeping the original mission of OpenAI alive by being truly open and empowering everyone. DeepSeek claims it is the best among open-source models and competes with the most advanced closed-source models worldwide. What Impact has DeepSeek Had on US Equities and Indices? Over the weekend, DeepSeek created a buzz as tech analysts said the company’s AI model is better than the world’s top chatbots and costs only a tenth as much. This saw the app surpass ChatGPT to become the No.1 app on the US app store. Released on January 20, 2025, DeepSeek gained popularity quickly thanks to countless threads on social media as well as its quality and price point. All of these factors set DeepSeek apart from its peers. Big Tech Rattled by DeepSeek as the Nasdaq fell 5% pre-market trading. Markets are concerned that a cheaper ******** model could have a massive impact on US tech dominance. According to DeepSeek, the company only spent around $5.6 million in developing their model, which is a pittance when compared to what US tech giants have poured into AI development and infrastructure. This was reflected in companies such as NVIDIA which was down as much as 12% in pre-market trading stretching to 17% at the time of writing (four-month low). Other chipmakers such as Broadcom (NASDAQ:) were down as much as 11%. Source: TradingView (click to enlarge) Another company that felt the sting was Japanese firm SoftBank (TYO:), which is part of President Donald Trump’s AI investment drive. It was also down around 8% on Monday. As much as we are seeing blood in the water today, this may be a knee-jerk reaction. It is still too early to declare DeepSeek as the new leader in the AI race but as one analyst put it, it certainly is a wake up call to America. Technical Analysis – Nasdaq 100 From a technical standpoint, the has recovered some of its pre-market losses having traded at a low of around 20660. The Index also gapped down, so if you are taking the gap into account from Friday’s close, The Nasdaq 100 was down by as much as +- 7.5% at its lowest point. The index appears to have found support of the 100-day MA and up about 500 points since. The bullish structure still remains intact without a daily candle close below the 20756 handle. This does not mean that a daily candle close above this level means bulls will take charge once more but does leave the door open for a more sustained recovery and a push on toward fresh highs. Trump military executive orders on DEI, vaccines, transgender troops Trump military executive orders on DEI, vaccines, transgender troops U.S. President Donald Trump signs documents as he issues executive orders in the Oval Office at the White House on Inauguration Day in Washington, U.S., Jan. 20, 2025. Carlos Barria | Reuters President Donald Trump is expected Monday to sign multiple executive orders aimed at reversing Biden-era military policies on Covid-19 vaccination, transgender servicemembers, and DEI measures. Trump is also set to direct the United States to build its own version of Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defense system, according to NBC News, which cited White House fact sheets and summaries of the orders. The orders are the latest in a flurry of executive actions by Trump, who has pushed major changes across the federal government in his first week back in the White House. The actions expected Monday include an order to reinstate people who were discharged from the military during the Covid pandemic for refusing to be vaccinated against the deadly virus. Discharged service members who seek to be reinstated also will get full back pay and benefits, NBC reported. Another order seeks to “prioritize readiness and lethality” in the military by undoing Biden-era gender inclusivity efforts. The order would revoke President Joe Biden’s 2021 order prohibiting military discharges because of gender identity and bar “the use of invented and identification-based pronouns” in the Defense Department. Trump’s expected order “also prohibits males from using or sharing sleeping, changing, or bathing facilities designated for females,” the documents say. Read more CNBC politics coverage The president is also set to sign an order ending all Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices in the Defense and Homeland Security departments. The order also will direct the Pentagon to review all internal instances of “race or sex-based discrimination” stemming from DEI initiatives. And it directs the secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security to review the curricula of U.S. service academies “to ensure these institutions eliminate radical DEI and gender ideologies,” according to the White House documents seen by NBC. Nvidia calls China’s DeepSeek R1 model ‘an excellent AI advancement’ Nvidia calls China’s DeepSeek R1 model ‘an excellent AI advancement’ Jensen Huang, co-founder and chief executive officer of Nvidia Corp., during a news conference in Taipei, Taiwan, on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. Nvidia is still working on the certification process for Samsung Electronics Co.’s high-bandwidth memory chips, a final required step before the Korean company can begin supplying a component essential to training AI platforms. Annabelle Chih | Bloomberg | Getty Images Nvidia called DeepSeek’s R1 model “an excellent AI advancement,” despite the ******** startup’s emergence causing the chip maker’s stock price to plunge 17% on Monday. “DeepSeek is an excellent AI advancement and a perfect example of Test Time Scaling,” an Nvidia spokesperson told CNBC on Monday. “DeepSeek’s work illustrates how new models can be created using that technique, leveraging widely-available models and compute that is fully export control compliant.” The comments come after DeepSeek last week released R1, which is an open-source reasoning model that reportedly outperformed the best models from U.S. companies such as OpenAI. R1’s self-reported training cost was less than $6 million, which is a fraction of the billions that Silicon Valley companies are spending to build their artificial-intelligence models. Nvidia’s statement indicates that it sees DeepSeek’s breakthrough as creating more work for the American chip maker’s graphics processing units, or GPUs. “Inference requires significant numbers of NVIDIA GPUs and high-performance networking,” the spokesperson added. “We now have three scaling laws: pre-training and post-training, which continue, and new test-time scaling.” Nvidia also said that the GPUs that DeepSeek used were fully export compliant. That counters Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang’s comments on CNBC last week that he believed DeepSeek used Nvidia GPUs models which are banned in mainland China. DeepSeek says it used special versions of Nvidia’s GPUs intended for the ******** market. Analysts are now asking if multi-billion dollar capital investments from companies like Microsoft, Google and Meta for Nvidia-based AI infrastructure are being wasted when the same results can be achieved more cheaply. Earlier this month, Microsoft said it is spending $80 billion on AI infrastructure in 2025 alone while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg last week said the social media company planned to invest between $60 to $65 billion in capital expenditures in 2025 as part of its AI strategy. “If model training costs prove to be significantly lower, we would expect a near-term cost benefit for advertising, travel, and other consumer app companies that use cloud AI services, while long-term hyperscaler AI-related revenues and costs would likely be lower,” wrote BofA Securities analyst Justin Post in a note on Monday. Nvidia’s comment also reflects a new theme that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella have discussed in recent months. Much of the AI ***** and the demand for Nvidia GPUs was driven by the “scaling law,” a concept in AI development proposed by OpenAI researchers in 2020. That concept suggested that better AI systems could be developed by greatly expanding the amount of computation and data that went into building a new model, requiring more and more chips. Since November, Huang and Altman have been focusing on a new wrinkle to the scaling law, which Huang calls “test-time scaling.” This concept says that if a fully trained AI model spends more time using extra computer power when making predictions or generating text or images to allow it to “reason,” it will provided better answers than it would have if it ran for less time. Forms of the test-time scaling law are used in some of OpenAI’s models such as o1 as well as DeepSeek’s breakthrough R1 model. President Donald Trump to sign executive order to ban ‘invented’ pronouns in US armed forces President Donald Trump to sign executive order to ban ‘invented’ pronouns in US armed forces President Donald Trump is preparing to sign a new executive order commencing a war on “invented” pronouns and paving the way for the potential removal of trans people from the US armed forces. During his first day back in office for his second term, Mr Trump signed an executive order for US Government agencies to only recognise two genders, male and female. Taking his gender and identity battle further, Mr Trump is reportedly signing another order on Monday local time that could see “trans-identifying” people removed from the US armed forces if they do not identify as male or female, are taking certain medication and define new rules for access to bathrooms and sleeping quarters. “Unit cohesion requires high levels of integrity and stability among service members,” a White House document seen by The New York Post reportedly says. The document, which is understood to preview Mr Trump’s executive order, adds there will be “no accommodation for anything less than resilience, strength, and the ability to withstand extraordinary physical demands”. “It can take a minimum of 12 months for an individual to complete treatments after transition surgery, which often involves the use of heavy narcotics. During this *******, they are not physically capable of meeting military readiness requirements and require ongoing medical care. This is not conducive for deployment or other readiness requirements.” The document uses the word “trans-identify” not the term transgender. The order will reportedly direct Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth to ban the “use of invented and identification-based pronouns”. It is understood the order, if signed, will ban armed forces members from using a sleeping, changing or bathing facility that is designated for a gender different than the one they were assigned at birth. The order comes as Mr Trump attempts to remove the “woke” influence of former President Joe Biden on the US armed forces. Throughout the campaign trail for the 2020 US election, Mr Trump said the US armed forces exists “to win wars, not to be woke”. Mr Trump had banned transgender Americans from serving in the US armed forces during his first presidency, something Mr Biden revoked when he took office in 2021. Mr Trump then revoked Mr Biden’s revoke when he took office on January 20, 2025. Race for Arctic Riches: Geopolitical Jockeying Heats Up Amid AI and Market Shifts Race for Arctic Riches: Geopolitical Jockeying Heats Up Amid AI and Market Shifts Tech stocks are selling off sharply today, triggered by concerns that China’s just-released DeepSeek AI assistant may steal the thunder from U.S.-based platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Before this week, however, markets have been responding with gusto since November’s presidential election, especially in a few key—and perhaps expected—industries. The biggest winner so far was the automobile industry, led by Tesla (NASDAQ:), up an impressive 70% since Election Day as of Friday. General Motors (NYSE:), while not quite as flashy, was up about 5%. Despite President Donald Trump’s rollback of Biden-era electric vehicle (EV) mandates, Tesla has continued to command investor confidence, possibly due to Elon Musk’s close ties to the president. producers also saw a boost, driven by the AI *****. Data centers, which currently consume 1-2% of global power, could grow to 3-4% by the end of the decade, according to Goldman Sachs. And let’s not forget the airlines industry. United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:), up 33%, capitalized on record-breaking TSA screenings in 2024, operating its largest-ever domestic schedule and expanding international routes. I also want to share the best performing industries for the five-day ******* as of last week, as President Trump has signed an historical number of executive orders (EOs) since taking office. The list includes many of the same areas—power generation, construction & engineering, consumer finance, retail—but there’s an interesting addition: industrial REITs. The industrial REIT ticker is represented by a single stock, Prologis (NYSE:), the world’s largest industrial property developer. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company has seen its warehouse business explode since the election. It’s also been dipping its toes in the white-hot data center market, selling a facility in the fourth quarter, with more in the pipeline. Why the Arctic Matters But let’s pivot to a different story—one unfolding far from Wall Street. I recently spoke with Jonathan Roth, founder of ResourceWars.com and a veteran of capital markets, who highlighted an increasingly urgent issue: the Arctic. As polar ice caps melt, new opportunities—and risks—are emerging in this increasingly contested region. Nations like the U.S., Russia and China are jockeying for influence, not only to access the Arctic’s vast natural resources but also to secure strategic military and trading advantages. Greenland, in particular, is shaping up to be a geopolitical hotspot, and it’s no wonder that Trump has repeated his interest in acquiring the island. A Treasure Trove Beneath the Ice During our conversation, Jonathan emphasized the Arctic’s immense resource wealth. The region is home to some of the world’s largest untapped reserves of natural resources. A 2008 study by the U.S. Geological Survey says that the Arctic holds 1,670 trillion cubic feet of and other fuels—equivalent to Russia’s entire oil reserves and three times those of the U.S. Greenland, the world’s largest island that isn’t a continent, is rich in critical minerals essential for modern technologies, including rare earth metals, graphite, niobium and titanium. These materials are vital for everything from smartphones to EVs to military hardware. Ice loss in the Danish territory has also exposed significant deposits of lithium, hafnium, uranium and gold. A 2023 survey by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland evaluated 38 raw materials on the island, most of which have high or moderate potential. Russia’s Arctic Ambitions Jonathan also pointed out that Russia has been quietly building its Arctic presence for over a decade. It now has the most significant military presence in the region, with refurbished Soviet-era bases and a fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers. In 2024, some 38 million metric tons of cargo were shipped through Russia’s Northern Sea Route (NSR), a record amount for a single year and a nearly tenfold increase from a decade earlier. The NSR is central to President Vladimir Putin’s vision of a shipping lane that rivals the Suez and Panama Canal, but challenges like shallow, ice-filled waters and foggy conditions mean the route has a long way to go before becoming a global sea lane. The country’s Arctic ambitions are about more than just trade. The region is a cornerstone of its strategy to secure military and economic power. This poses a significant concern for the U.S. and its allies, especially as climate change accelerates ice melt and opens up new access routes. Russia’s dominance in the Arctic could disrupt global trade, heighten geopolitical tensions and undermine U.S. strategic interests. The U.S. Lags in Icebreaker Capabilities While Russia boasts dozens of icebreakers, including nuclear-powered vessels, the U.S. is woefully behind. Jonathan highlighted that the last heavy polar icebreaker built by the U.S., the Polar Star, was commissioned nearly 50 years ago, in 1976. Meanwhile, the newer Polar Security Cutter (PSC) class of icebreakers, intended to bolster U.S. capabilities, has faced years of delays and budget overruns. Recognizing this, the U.S. has partnered with Canada and Finland under the ICE Pact to develop a new generation of icebreakers. Finland, which designs 80% of the world’s icebreakers, brings valuable expertise to the table. Greenland: A Strategic Prize Greenland’s importance extends beyond its resource wealth. Jonathan noted the island occupies a key position along two potential Arctic shipping routes—the Northwest Passage and the Transpolar Sea Route. As sea ice continues to melt, these routes could significantly reduce shipping times and bypass traditional chokepoints like the Suez and Panama Canals. Greenland is also home to Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base), a critical U.S. military installation for missile early warning and space surveillance. The base’s strategic value is compounded by Greenland’s role in the so-called GIUK Gap (Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom — a naval chokepoint in the North Atlantic. Investment in Pituffik has been inconsistent, however, and its importance has waned since the Cold War. Renewed attention to Greenland could help the U.S. counter Russia’s growing Arctic dominance and China’s ambitions as a “near-Arctic” power. What’s at Stake The Arctic’s significance isn’t just about resources or shipping lanes. It’s about power, influence and the ability to shape the future of global trade and security. For investors, the region offers opportunities in sectors like energy, mining and infrastructure. Companies involved in rare earth mining, icebreaker construction and Arctic logistics could see significant growth as nations ramp up their Arctic investments. As always, investors should keep a close eye on these developments. The Arctic may be cold, but the race for its riches is heating up. *** Holdings may change daily. US physical game sales plummet, halved since 2021 US physical game sales plummet, halved since 2021 Physical gaming sales in the US have halved since 2021. This change has been gradual but has seen a heavier push as internet speeds increase, live service games dominate the market, and in-app purchases become more popular. Data shared on Bluesky by Mat Piscatella (via VGC) shows that 2024 continued a slowing trend of less people purchasing physical media. He circles it back to questioning whether or not this will be slowed or reversed with the release of the Switch 2. The rate of decline in US physical video game software spending accelerated in 2024.Spending on physical video game software in the US has been cut in more than half since 2021 and is now more than 85% below its 2008 peak. We’ll see if Switch 2 can help slow/reverse this trend in 2025. — Mat Piscatella (@matpiscatella.bsky.social) 2025-01-24T19:24:41.744Z As pointed out by VGC, part of the push toward digital games, especially within the Nintendo space, “weaker than normal” release schedule of Switch games, which often bolsters the numbers a bit. We unfortunately suspect this isn’t going to be totally reversed following the release of the Switch 2, rather it will be interesting to see the model Nintendo actually follows. We already know most of the original Switch’s library will be playable on the new iteration, but plenty of Nintendo Switch games lack a physical cartridge, opting instead for a physical case plastered with a digital download code. Mum’s sentence over toddler death could increase Mum’s sentence over toddler death could increase A mother who wheeled her daughter’s body around in a pram could have her sentence for allowing the toddler’s death increased at the Court of Appeal for being “unduly lenient”. Chelsea Gleason-Mitchell, 24, was jailed for 10 years in December after pleading guilty to child cruelty and causing or allowing the death of her two-year-old daughter, Isabella Wheildon, at the hands of her partner, Scott Jeff. The pair, from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, wheeled Isabella’s body around in a pushchair before leaving her in a bathroom at a hostel for the homeless in Ipswich in June 2023. At her sentencing, a judge described Gleason-Mitchell as a “weak and spineless person and pathetically desperate”. But her sentence could now be increased after solicitor general Lucy Rigby agreed to refer the case to the Court of Appeal following a request from shadow safeguarding minister Alicia Kearns. In a letter to Ms Kearns, Ms Rigby said she was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the “horrific crime”, and had decided there were “sufficient legal grounds to conclude that the sentence would likely be increased by the Court of Appeal”. Ms Kearns said: “Chelsea Gleason-Mitchell failed to protect her child from Scott Jeff, who horrifically abused and brutally murdered her child. “No punishment will ever make up for their heinous actions, let alone their depraved behaviour in the days following her ******* visiting the pub and pushing her lifeless body around the shops. “I thank the solicitor general for accepting my request to refer Chelsea Gleason-Mitchell’s paltry sentence to the Court of Appeal as unduly lenient. “Isabella Wheildon did not deserve the awful abuse that she suffered: 36 days of beatings and being given drugs. Her killers deserve to never see the light of day again. “Any spineless individual who stands by as a child is murdered should spend decades behind bars. I hope the Court of Appeal will agree and finally give Isabella the justice she deserves.” Isabella Jonas-Wheildon was described as being a “happy” toddler before Scott Jeff entered her life [PA] Jeff, also 24, was convicted of Isabella’s ******* and handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 26 years for what the judge described as a “cruel campaign of violence and abuse which ended in her death”. Ms Kearns had also asked for Jeff’s sentence to be reviewed, but the Solicitor General declined to refer his case to the Court of Appeal, saying it did not meet the “very high” threshold for a review. The Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme allows any member of the public to ask the Attorney General’s Office to review a sentence they believe is too lenient. If the law officers – the attorney general and solicitor general – agree the sentence appears unduly lenient, they can ask the Court of Appeal to review the sentence. It is then up to the Court of Appeal to decide whether to hear the case and, if it does, whether the sentence should be increased. Unlike Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman Can’t Escape Jeff the Land Shark in Marvel Rivals Unlike Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman Can’t Escape Jeff the Land Shark in Marvel Rivals NetEase Games’ Marvel Rivals Season 1 brings with it the Fantastic Four, all four members of which possess some incredible abilities that synergize well with the other members of the game. The current build of the game has access to only two of these four characters – Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman. Susan Storm aka Invisible Woman has become quite a hit within the playerbase, thanks to her unique gameplay, abilities and somewhat controversial skin. However, players attempting to play through a game with this particular character might notice a severe disadvantage when paired against Jeff the Land Shark – resulting in quick and often baffling deaths. Jeff has been quite the subject of controversy and frustration for a lot of players. Marvel Rivals player base frustrated with Jeff the Land Shark Marvel Rivals players have had it with Jeff | Image Credits: NetEase Games Clearly expressing their frustration at the current state of the game surrounding this particular Marvel Rivals character, a post on the r/MarvelRivals subreddit goes on to showcase how Invisible Woman was eliminated by Jeff the Land Shark during an intense PvP battle. This was despite being seemingly ‘out of range’ on an upper platform. This is quite the peculiar behavior – given that characters such as Mr. Fantastic and The Punisher can easily avoid being swallowed by Jeff when using certain moves – while Invisible Woman has no defense. This was also followed by responses to the post that echoed the same sentiment, recalling similar experiences with other characters. Comment byu/reaverza from discussion inmarvelrivals A Redditor also attempted to offer a more technical explanation, implying that the Jeff has an effective vertical range of around 5 meters. The poster did, however, confuse feet for meters initially which resulted in a rather humorous exchange mentioning that the cast wouldn’t be over 5 feet if this was the case. Comment byu/reaverza from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/reaverza from discussion inmarvelrivals These ultimates in general do not feel good to play, likely need a nerf and/or counter, and are highlighting severe issues plaguing Marvel RIvals. Comment byu/reaverza from discussion inmarvelrivals Many comments also chimed in on Jeff being one of the worst heroes to play against in the game, clearly expressing their frustrations. While unfortunate, this could be linked to a bug Invisible Woman’s death could be linked to a bug | Image Credits: NetEase Games Given the absurd nature of the gameplay clip, it is very likely that this particular interaction was bugged from the start, since the game terrain should have prevented the death from happening in the first place. Comment byu/reaverza from discussion inmarvelrivals OP also decided to report the problem, and have the Marvel Rivals team analyze the data and determine its cause. Rivals needs changes to its heroes, especially with regards to game balance Marvel Rivals has a hero balancing problem | Image Credits: NetEase Games Overall, the community does not appear to be quite pleased with the current state of Marvel Rivals, calling out developer NetEase Games for their lack of attention to certain overpowered heroes. While Rivals is indeed fun to play (managing to draw in well over 600,000+ players at an all time peak), certain aspects – especially with regards to game balance need to be vastly improved upon. Nerfs, buffs and counters are necessary to make the game play a whole lot better, and simultaneously keep its image favorable in the eyes of the player base. After all, community feedback is important to a game’s well being, and Rivals may soon be left without a player base if things continue unchecked. DeepSeek: ******** AI model wipes $1 trillion from US stock market as Nvidia plunges 17 per cent DeepSeek: ******** AI model wipes $1 trillion from US stock market as Nvidia plunges 17 per cent Nvidia and other US technology firms plunged on Monday, part of a global sell-off as ******** startup DeepSeek sparked concerns over competitiveness in artificial intelligence and America’s leadership in the sector. Nvidia, the chip designer who has been a major beneficiary of the AI hype, last slid 17.3 per cent. With that, the megacap tech stock was on track to notch its worst day since March 2020. Shares touched lows in the session not seen since October. Nvidia’s losses helped drive other AI trades and lower the broader US market. Micron and Arm Holdings dropped more than 10 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively. Chipmakers Broadcom and Advanced Micro Devices lost more than 16 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively. Constellation Energy and Vistra, two of the best-known derivative plays tied to the power build-out for AI, plummeted more than 19 per cent and 27 per cent, respectively. International markets also felt the impacts. Netherlands-based chip companies ASML and ASM International both pulled back sharply in European trading. In Asia, Japanese chip-related stocks including Advantest and Tokyo Electron were broadly lower. DeepSeek launched a free, open-source large language model in late December, claiming it was developed in just two months at a cost of under $USD6 million ($9.5 million) — a much smaller expense than the one called for by Western counterparts. Last week, the company released a reasoning model that also reportedly outperformed OpenAI’s latest in many third-party tests. “DeepSeek is an excellent AI advancement and a perfect example of Test Time Scaling,” an Nvidia spokesperson said. “DeepSeek’s work illustrates how new models can be created using that technique, leveraging widely available models and compute that is fully export control compliant. Inference requires significant numbers of NVIDIA GPUs and high-performance networking. We now have three scaling laws: pre-training and post-training, which continue, and new test-time scaling.” In a social media post, Marc Andreesen called DeepSeek’s product “one of the most amazing and impressive breakthroughs I’ve ever seen” and a “profound gift to the world.” The Andreessen Horowitz co-founder recently gained notoriety for his support of President Donald Trump. These developments have stoked concerns about the amount of money big tech companies have been investing in AI models and data centres and raised alarm that the US is not leading the sector as much as previously believed. “DeepSeek clearly doesn’t have access to as much compute as US hyper-scalers and somehow managed to develop a model that appears highly competitive,” said Srini Pajjuri, semiconductor analyst at Raymond James, in a Monday note. Mr Pajjuri said DeepSeek could “drive even more urgency among US hyper-scalers,” a group of large computing infrastructure players like Amazon and Microsoft. Specifically, the analyst said these companies can leverage their advantage from access to graphics processing units to set themselves apart from cheaper options. GPUs are a key part of the infrastructure required to train huge AI models. Nvidia is the market leader in GPUs. The cost of computing has become a key topic of conversation following the DeepSeek news, according to Citi analysts. While the dominance of US companies on the most advanced AI models may be threatened, they said, a key barrier for competitors is access to the best chips. Because of this, leading AI companies likely won’t move away from the more-advanced GPUs, the analysts said. Last week’s announcement of the $500 billion Stargate AI project is a “nod to the need for advanced chips,” they added. To be sure, Bernstein analysts expressed doubt over whether the DeepSeek tool was actually built for less than $6 million. They questioned if that figure left out other costs from prior research and experiments to get the technology to where it is today. Despite stressing that DeepSeek’s models “look fantastic,” the team said they shouldn’t be thought of as “miracles.” And panic about the “death-knell of the AI infrastructure complex as we know it,” the Bernstein analysts said, was “overblown.” — CNBC’s Lee Ying Shan and Michael Bloom contributed to this story. I want the Nintendo Switch 2 to steal this one Wii U feature I want the Nintendo Switch 2 to steal this one Wii U feature When Nintendo revealed the Switch 2, there was a tinge of disappointment in some corners of the internet over the fact that the console wasn’t a major departure from the original Switch. It is still a hybrid console that you slide in and out of a dock to play games on the go or via your TV, only with prettier graphics, a ******* screen, and new Joy-cons. However, Nintendo still has a gimmick up its sleeve, only it isn’t as in-your-face as it was with something like the Wii’s motion controls. The Switch 2’s new Joy-cons aren’t just ******* and magnetic but also appear to have new mouse-like functionality. This opens up the doors for a ton of new games we want to see on the Switch 2 that could take advantage of that unique control scheme. What I want most, though, is to see the return of a forgotten Wii U feature that never got the chance to show off its full potential: Miiverse. A whole new Miiverse The Wii U had a lot of issues that contributed to its failure, most of which stemmed from its gamepad and name. Nintendo couldn’t quite communicate that this was a new system and not just a tablet accessory for the Wii, but also struggled to sell why gaming while looking between the screen in your hands and the TV would be fun. Despite that, the system had just as strong a first-party support as any other Nintendo system. It was so good that almost every notable game from it eventually got ported to the Switch for a second chance on a popular platform. But one feature that the Wii U pioneered didn’t survive the transition to the original Switch. Miiverse was a short-lived social network launched with the Wii U that allowed players to send messages, leave comments, and even post gameplay videos. That all was fairly standard even at the time, but it had one brilliant inclusion that took full advantage of the Wii U gamepad. Instead of just typing messages or comments, players could use their tablets to leave messages in the form of hand-drawn sketches. Nintendo As small as the Wii U community was, seeing these hand-drawn messages appear in the Splatoon 2 hub or at the end of a Super Mario Maker 2 level gave the impression that we were all connecting in a more personal way. It wasn’t just an outlet for creativity, but sharing joy and communicating in a way that wasn’t as cold as text can be. A nice text comment on a Mario Maker level is great but seeing someone take the time to draw a funny moment from your level, regardless of artistic skill, is a more direct connection between two people. It’s like how handwriting a holiday card means just a little bit more than picking up a pre-written one from the store. Miiverse was discontinued in 2017 and was never integrated into the original Switch. Without a way to replicate the tablet’s drawing feature, it made sense to leave it behind. The Switch 2 has no gamepad but gets around that limitation with one potentially brilliant feature added to its Joy-cons. The mouse functionality has the community’s imagination running wild with the different genres the Switch 2 will be able to support, new ways we might control familiar games, and what special new experiences Nintendo has in store utilizing the feature we won’t see coming. My first thought was how perfect it would be for a new version of the Miiverse to finally show off the potential of such a clever community tool. A mouse may not be the ideal tool for professional artists, but the point of Miiverse was to include everybody. It was about giving players the freedom to engage with one another in a new way that breaks through the language barrier. On the Wii U, everyone had the tablet and the opportunity to communicate in a fun and low-commitment way. The same will hopefully be true for the Switch 2s’s Joy-cons. So long as you have the system, a flat surface to place the Joy-**** on and some inspiration, almost everyone should be able to intuitively participate. And with the Switch 2 almost guaranteed to outperform the Wii U, the community will only be *******. Even if Nintendo doesn’t want to revive Miiverse, it could still implement the core of it within individual games in ways that make sense. Let us draw pictures to send to friends in a new Animal Crossing game and hang them on our walls, or have a handful of drawings pop up from other players who also recently completed a Mario stage as we slide down the flagpole. It could help players still feel like they’re part of the community even when playing single-player games. In an era where so much communication is one-sided and asymmetrical, it is all too easy to disassociate and forget that there’s another person behind a comment. The human touch of seeing a drawing pop up could be a breath of fresh air that would set the Switch 2 apart without alienating or confusing players like the Wii U gamepad did. Meta AI will now use your Facebook and Instagram activity to inform its recommendations Meta AI will now use your Facebook and Instagram activity to inform its recommendations Meta is giving its AI assistant a better “memory” in an effort to make the chatbot more useful. The company’s latest AI update allows the assistant to “remember certain details that you share with it in 1:1 chat” and uses your past activity on Facebook and Instagram to make more personalized recommendations. With the change, which will initially be available to the US and Canada, Meta AI will be able to track your preferences based on information you share in chat with it. In a blog post, the company uses the example of food allergies and other dietary restrictions so meta AI will “remember” to recommend recipes that fit your requirements. But the assistant will also be able to track other details about you, including information about your personal life and relationships. (Meta will allow you to track Meta AI’s memories about you and remove specific details.) And, notably, Meta AI can now use your past activity across Facebook and Instagram to inform its interactions with you. Meta For example, the company notes that Meta AI may suggest weekend activities based on the location you’ve identified on your Facebook profile and specific Reels you’ve watched. Meta’s systems know a lot about their users, so these types of recommendations could be pretty far reaching and as eerily-accurate as Meta’s in-app advertising. When asked for more details about what types of Facebook and Instagram activity may be used for these types of suggestions, a Meta spokesperson pointed to the company’s Help Center. “Other information from your profile like your age and gender, and interests based on your activity across our products, such as the types of content, including ads, you view or interact with and how you interact with it,” it states, “may be used to help personalize your interactions with AI.” The latest Meta AI updates comes amid increasing hype around China-based DeepSeek, an AI assistant that’s currently the top app in Apple’s App Store. The sudden popularity of the assistant, which was purportedly developed for less than $6 million, has rattled investors and some in the AI industry. Meta’s Chief AI Scientist, Yann Le Cun, however, said Monday that “the market reactions to DeepSeek are woefully unjustified.” Source link #Meta #Facebook #Instagram #activity #inform #recommendations Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
