  1. TCS to inject AI and quantum computing into aerospace through French delivery centre TCS to inject AI and quantum computing into aerospace through French delivery centre ***** Consultancy Services (TCS) is targeting the next technology revolution in the aerospace sector through a delivery centre that will focus on technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. Based in Toulouse, it is TCS’s fourth IT delivery centre in France. It will start with 50 people, but could increase to 500. The region of France is a hub for the aerospace sector, home to Airbus, the French space agency and hundreds of companies focused on the sector. According to Anupam Singhal, president of manufacturing at TCS, the investment could stimulate the growth of TCS’s French operation as a whole. TCS’s workforce in France currently stands at about 1,700 people after 30 years in the country. In comparison, the ***, with a similar size economy, has 23,000 TCS staff. The new centre will be focused on the use of technologies such as AI and quantum computing to address the challenges faced by the aerospace and defence industries. It will also give customers access to the knowledge of TCS’s 600,000 global staff. Industry challenges Singhal cited the delivery delays being experienced by Boeing as an example of where the latest technologies might be used to assist aerospace manufacturers. Despite orders for planes being at an all-time high, Singhal pointed to major challenges. “Supply chain resilience has been a big issue, and that’s the reason major suppliers have not been able to deliver the backlog of the demand they have,” he said. Problems can escalate quickly for manufacturers when the supply chain is disrupted. Singhal gave the example of the Suez Canal blockage, which delayed the delivery of parts coming from suppliers across the world. He said TCS is using AI to gather information in different formats, such as news reports, and work out what global or local events could impact the supply chain. It then warns the manufacturers if they need to make changes. “The technology can process information and analyse what the possible impact could be. It can then advise the company, for example, to stock up with more items. The whole idea is that resiliency can be built in,” he said. “Everything comes out of data, so the ability for us to connect public information with enterprise data – to understand where suppliers are and where items are coming from – means AI can tell the enterprise, ‘Deliveries may get stuck, but you have another supplier which is not affected – maybe you need to put an order into that supplier so your production line is not stopped’.” Singhal added: “We are not saying it will replace humans, because they are in the loop, but today, all leaders and managers take decisions based on data. By using technology, we can provide a lot more data so that enterprises can make more intelligent decisions. In fact, AI technology can offer two or three possible options and let the customer decide what is the right thing for them.” Tech for sustainability While companies across the world talk about their targets for becoming carbon neutral, the aerospace industry is hugely dependent on fossil fuel. Singhal said TCS is working on the use of quantum computing in the design of aircraft to enable manufacturers to dramatically reduce fuel consumption. “This is being done now with newer aircraft, which are 20% more efficient than older versions,” he said. “The lighter the plane, the lower the amount of fuel it will burn. So we built a quantum computing-based solution where the analysis of material can be done.” Then there is the use of technology to optimise flight routes based on factors including distance, congestion and weather. “The fact is, every minute a plane is in the air, it’s producing huge amounts of carbon dioxide and airlines are burning money. We can use quantum to devise the optimal flight path so it doesn’t have to be in the air longer than necessary.” Augmenting human skills Optimising limited human resources is also a major challenge in a sector that is highly regulated and requires high-level skills. Singhal said in sectors such as aerospace and defence, it is a challenge to find people with the right level of skills. But technology generally, he said, including AI, can enable less skilled people to perform the work of more highly skilled people. “Using generative AI and natural language support, a worker can ask, ‘I need to assemble this part – tell me how to go about it’, and there could be a video or instructions for this part,” he added. When it comes to human skills, TCS said the Toulouse centre will help accelerate recruitment in the region, accessing local talent, engaging in academic partnerships and using existing capabilities in France. 2. How women’s dollars are driving the US economy How women’s dollars are driving the US economy Bank of America (BAC) Institute economist Taylor Bowley joins Wealth to explore recent consumer spending trends, focusing on women’s economic impact. According to Bowley, women’s discretionary spending has outpaced men’s by 20 basis points over the past two years, enabling women to “help support a lot of the economic growth over the last few years.” She attributes this trend partly to the narrowing gender pay gap. She notes that experience-based sectors are currently seeing the strongest growth, with travel and events leading the way. Bowley also explains that continued spending growth, employment income growth, and higher education are crucial for this economic trend to remain consistent long term. 3. Now you can raise Anakin Skywalker with this Darth Vader Tamagotchi Now you can raise Anakin Skywalker with this Darth Vader Tamagotchi Have you ever wanted to raise Anakin Skywalker, instead of letting those hoity-toity Jedi fumble the whole thing? Here’s your chance, albeit in the form of a virtual ****. Bandai just announced a , complete with a protective silicone case that’s shaped like the Sith lord’s iconic helmet. As for the software, it’s a Tamagotchi with a Star Wars sheen. You raise a sprite-based Anakin from a boy, influencing his transformation into Darth Vader. You can feed him, train him and take him to meet characters from the wider universe. There’s one thing you can’t do. You can’t love him enough to avoid his eventual fall to the dark side. Anakin will always turn into Darth Vader, though your specific caretaking (or lack thereof) will influence what kind of menace he grows into. The company says there are ten unique Darth Vader personalities that can blossom. Bandai The Vader Tamagotchi also plays over a dozen low-res renditions of famous scenes from the movies, and even includes several minigames. There’s a word puzzle, lightsaber training, a take on the famous Death Star trench run and more. Oddly, there’s no pod-racing minigame. This cute lil genocidal maniac goes on ***** in March, with pre-orders available right now. It costs $30. The Vader-based virtual **** is the third Star Wars-themed Tamagotchi. There’s already and another based on Grogu. Source link #raise #Anakin #Skywalker #Darth #Vader #Tamagotchi Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  4. Facebook flags Linux topics as ‘cybersecurity threats’ — posts and users being blocked Facebook flags Linux topics as ‘cybersecurity threats’ — posts and users being blocked Facebook is banning posts that mention various Linux-related topics, sites, or groups. Some users may also see their accounts locked or limited when posting Linux topics. Major open-source operating system news, reviews, and discussion site DistroWatch is at the center of the controversy, as it seems to be the first to have noticed that Facebook’s Community Standards had blackballed it. A post on the site claims, “Facebook’s internal policy makers decided that Linux is malware and labeled groups associated with Linux as being ‘cybersecurity threats.’ We tried to post some blurb about distrowatch.com on Facebook and can confirm that it was barred with a message citing Community Standards. DistroWatch says that the Facebook ban took effect on January 19. Readers have reported difficulty posting links to the site on this social media platform. Moreover, some have told DistroWatch that their Facebook accounts have been locked or limited after sharing posts mentioning Linux topics. If you’re wondering if there might be something specific to DistroWatch.com, something on the site that the owners/operators perhaps don’t even know about, for example, then it seems pretty safe to rule out such a possibility. Reports show that “multiple groups associated with Linux and Linux discussions have either been shut down or had many of their posts removed.” However, we tested a few other Facebook posts with mentions of Linux, and they didn’t get blocked immediately. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Future) (Image credit: DistroWatch ) Copenhagen-hosted DistroWatch says it has tried to appeal against the Community Standards-triggered ban. However, they say that a Facebook representative said that Linux topics would remain on the cybersecurity filter. The DistroWatch writer subsequently got their Facebook account locked… Facebook’s overzealous ban on some Linux topics in the name of Community Standards and its protection of its users from threats come with a large ladle full of irony. “Facebook runs much of its infrastructure on Linux,” DistroWatch points out, “and often posts job ads looking for Linux developers.” However, the Linux news site was gracious enough not to sneer at Facebook’s record of (not) protecting its users. For example, some consider Facebook to have been instrumental in election interference around the world, to have fuelled genocide in Myanmar, and, despite its terrible past, has recently decided to dispose of its independent fact-checkers. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. There is some hope that banning Linux links and topics is a temporary blip on the radar. Facebook will soon realize that it has mistaken what is a flock of migratory birds for a squadron of assault drones. DistroWatch notes that it also suffered from an RSS feed ban hammer when Twitter changed its name to X-rated content implying X. If you have noticed any other Linux-related domains, links, or phrases that Facebook has banned, please tell us in the comments section. 8. The psychologist exposing the mental gymnastics that conceal racism The psychologist exposing the mental gymnastics that conceal racism Keon West could reel off anecdotes about the everyday racism he experiences – but he won’t. Personal accounts rarely convince anyone, he says, and, all too often, they are dismissed or put down to some other, less offensive, cause. Instead of the feelings that racist behaviour and accusations of racism provoke, he prefers to focus on facts. A social psychologist at Goldsmiths, University of London, West has consolidated hundreds of rigorous empirical studies on racism conducted over decades in his new book, The Science of Racism. By exploring how experiments can detect racism and measure its impact across societies, he builds a scientifically accurate picture of what contemporary racism is and the complexities that surround it. While it is clear that society’s attempts to combat racism remain inadequate, there is plenty that can be done about it. The same studies that prove the existence of racism can also help us unpack the psychological gymnastics that nearly everyone performs to conceal their racist behaviours from themself. The idea is that, by becoming aware of these personal biases, many racist behaviours can gradually be dissolved. In this interview, West sheds light on ideas like reverse racism and systemic racism and lays out the science-backed methods of spotting racism in its various guises. Doing so, he hopes, will steer public discourse away from debating whether racism exists to confronting it head on. Amarachi Orie: What is racism? 9. How Many Satchels for a Sheet Metal Door in Rust? How Many Satchels for a Sheet Metal Door in Rust? One of life’s little joys is learning how many satchels for a sheet metal door in Rust. It’s a memorable moment, your first-ever raid against your neighbor, and likely to stick with you. In the early game, you likely won’t craft a metric ton of explosive ammo, and C4 is still a few workbenches away, but a satchel is easily accessible and open to most skill levels. Here’s how many it takes to get through your neighbor’s front door! Assuming your raid target upgraded to a sheet metal door, which most Rust players should do immediately after building a base of any size, it will take a few satchels to blow through. In total, you need four satchels for a sheet metal door in Rust. That’s not many, and crafting satchels is not overly expensive. But hey, that’s just door number one! Door Type Satchels Wooden Door 2 Sheet Metal Door 4 Garage Door 9 Armored Door 12 A sheet metal door has 250 health points and is more damage-resistant. A single satchel will deal approximately 61 HP damage to the door. As such, it requires a minimum of four satchels, with 6 HP leftover on the door after the fourth explosion, so you could waste a fifth satchel or use explosive ammo to blast the last few HP. Basically, hit it with anything else. Don’t waste a fifth satchel! If you’re playing in a group, which Rust genuinely promotes, try to farm for C4. It’s a much better tool for raiding in Rust. What’s your preferred base-raiding method in Rust? Let us know in the comments, or send us a screenshot of your recent raid over on the Insider Gaming community forum! 10. Supreme Court to Hear Case About Nation’s First Publicly Funded Religious School Supreme Court to Hear Case About Nation’s First Publicly Funded Religious School The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to weigh in on whether the nation’s first publicly funded religious charter school should allowed to be open in Oklahoma. The justices said Friday they would seek to review the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s decision to reject the state school board’s approval of the Catholic Church’s application to open a charter school. As CBN News reported, St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School in Oklahoma City was set to begin classes in August 2023, but a group of parents, clergy members, and education activists filed a lawsuit to block state funding for the school. The Oklahoma Parent Legislative Action Committee along with nine other plaintiffs argued the charter school contradicts a statute that requires charter schools to be nonsectarian – meaning they cannot adhere to a specific religious sect. Although the school does not require students to be Catholic, they plan to adhere to biblical views on ******* orientation and gender identity. “You can’t use people’s tax dollars to promote or establish religion,” one of the plaintiffs, the Rev. Lori Walke of the Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ, told The Oklahoman. Earlier in 2023, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City asked Oklahoma taxpayers to support the development of a virtual charter school shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled private schools could receive public funds from school voucher programs and government grants. ***Please sign up for CBN Newsletters and download the CBN News app to ensure you keep receiving the latest news from a distinctly Christian perspective.*** Initially, the Oklahoma school board unanimously shot down the school’s 400-page application citing eight concerns that needed to be addressed before approval. The school made the appropriate accommodations for those requirements and the school board approved it in June despite a requirement that charter schools “be nonsectarian” in their “programs, admission policies, employment practices, and all other operations.” “This is a win for religious liberty and education freedom in our great state, and I am encouraged by these efforts to give parents more options when it comes to their child’s education,” Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt wrote in a statement at the time. Although its approval was considered a win by some, others immediately took issue with it and threatened to sue. Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond told the board that allowing Oklahoma’s taxpayers to have a religious charter choice would violate the Oklahoma Constitution. “The approval of any publicly funded religious school is contrary to Oklahoma law and not in the best interest of taxpayers,” Drummond argued. “…These members have exposed themselves and the state to potential legal action that could be costly.” “We’ve taken a step down a slippery slope that will result someday in state-funded Satanic schools, state-funded Sharia schools,” he later told KFOR-TV. “This is not what Oklahomans nor our Constitution, nor the U.S. Constitution permit.” Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters told CBN News he is fighting “on every front for the parents of Oklahoma.” “I’ve been advocating for this school. It’s the first Christian charter school in the country. We are very excited to have that here in Oklahoma, but again, we’ve got some legal hurdles to overcome,” he said. Last June, the Oklahoma high court held a 7-1 vote that a taxpayer-funded religious charter school would violate the section of the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment that prohibits the government from making any law “respecting an establishment of religion.” “Under Oklahoma law, a charter school is a public school,” Justice James Winchester, an appointee of former Republican Gov. Frank Keating, wrote in the court’s majority opinion. “As such, a charter school must be nonsectarian. However, St. Isidore will evangelize the Catholic school curriculum while sponsored by the state.” Justice Dana Kuehn wrote in the dissent that excluding St. Isidore from operating a charter school based solely on its religious affiliation would violate a different section of the First Amendment that protects religious freedom. The case will most likely be argued before the Supreme Court in late April and decided by early summer. 11. It Takes Two Dev’s Split Fiction Gets Trailer With Dune And Alice In Wonderland-Inspired Levels It Takes Two Dev’s Split Fiction Gets Trailer With Dune And Alice In Wonderland-Inspired Levels A new trailer for the next EA Originals game, Split Fiction, has gone live and shows off more of the Hazelight-developed game in action. Narrated by game director Josef Fares, the gameplay trailer shows off two levels–one set in a sci-fi world, the other in a fantasy land–and how players will use unique co-op gameplay elements in each one to progress. For the sci-fi level, there are anti-gravity sections and bike chases to look forward to, while the fantasy level features shape-shifting gameplay mechanics. The other big feature shown off in the Split Fiction video are Side Stories, optional one-off adventures that are hidden throughout the game’s levels. Discovering one and exploring it will transport players to even more worlds influenced by sci-fi and fantasy fiction, with some of the levels including outer space, an Alice in Wonderland-themed world, and a stage that looks heavily influenced by the recent Dune movies. Developed by the studio behind the critically acclaimed It Takes Two, Split Fiction was first revealed at The Game Awards last year. A mandatory two-player game, Split Fiction lets you play as two would-be writers: Mio and Zoe. After the pair sign up to participate in a new publishing program, they find themselves transported to virtual recreations of their stories by a shady tech company and have to work together to escape before they lose their memories. Split Fiction is set to launch for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC on March 6, 2025, and preorders are now live for it. The great thing about the game is that it comes with a cross-play Friend Pass, allowing one user to invite a friend to join them even if they haven’t purchased Split Fiction. Thanks to its cross-play design, it also doesn’t matter which of the three applicable platforms your pal is on either, as you’ll both be able to team up for a jaunt across futuristic and magical lands. 2025 has quite a few exciting co-op games on the horizon, and if you’re interested in seeing what else is coming out in this genre throughout the year, you can check out GameSpot’s list of the most-anticipated co-op games of the year. 13. How the $500 Billion Stargate Investment Can Boost These Stocks How the $500 Billion Stargate Investment Can Boost These Stocks It is no secret that the has earned most of the stock market’s attention for the better part of two years now, especially with the advent and adoption of artificial intelligence at the forefront. Today, more and more investors are familiar—and aware—of what this new technology can do. However, one major issue still stops it from fulfilling its true potential. That issue concerns energy efficiency and supply, which today’s rates fail to satisfy considering the massive needs that artificial intelligence development and operations command from the grid. To simplify the issue for investors, this technology needs the proper infrastructure, software, and energy supply to run data centers, and that has been made the center of the new $500 billion investment in what’s now being called the Stargate project. Of course, some stocks on the front lines of this new development will benefit more than others, which is why investors should keep an eye on today’s list. These names include companies like Microsoft (NASDAQ:), Oracle (NYSE:), the classic semiconductor darling NVIDIA (NASDAQ:), and even cloud giant Alphabet (NASDAQ:). Price Action Gives a Hint Suppose price action can be taken as an indicator of sentiment in the stock market. In that case, the charts for the past five days can tell investors where the real upside – and action – might be when this $500 billion investment is made into infrastructure for artificial intelligence and data centers. Over the past five days, Oracle shares led the pack with a 13.5% performance over the rest of the names in this list, with NVIDIA following in second with a rally of 5.1%. However, this doesn’t mean there will be only one winner in this race; rather, the value chain will be timed differently for each. With this in mind, investors can see that Oracle was favored first because of its exposure to the cloud infrastructure business, which is set to host the artificial intelligence models and applications to be developed in this growing network of developers and companies. Knowing that this is Oracle’s positioning, some Wall Street analysts decided to let their optimistic views be known to the broader market. For example, analysts from Cantor Fitzgerald initiated coverage on Oracle stock a few hours after the $500 billion announcement was made, with an overweight rating and a $214 a-share valuation. To prove this new view right, the stock would have to rally up to 16.5% from its current level and make a new 52-week high. This is also why institutional buyers from Robeco Institutional Asset Management built up a stake of up to $274.6 million days after the announcement. Second in line will be NVIDIA. Now that Oracle has taken care of the software end of things, Nivida is needed to solve the project’s hardware gap. This is why those at HSBC followed suit by reiterating a buy rating on NVIDIA stock and, this time, placing a $185 price target on it. From today’s price, this new view suggests that the stock needs to run up to 29.2% and deliver another double-digit upside scenario for its investors. Microsoft & Alphabet Come Next After NVIDIA and Oracle have laid the groundwork, it’s time for the ******* players in this race to start reaping the benefits. Investors can think of the land development, the pipework, and the concrete foundation as achievements made by both Oracle and NVIDIA. From there, the developers who take credit for the finalized building will be the ******* names with the resources to make it all happen. This is why it’s essential to keep an eye on the stocks of both Microsoft and Alphabet, Google’s parent company, a fact that Wall Street has increasingly recognized. Analysts from Morgan Stanley also decided to reiterate their overweight rating on Microsoft stock just days after the announcement, calling for up to 22% upside through their $540 a share valuation. Then there is the gauge investors can take from a recent 8.8% boost in holdings from institutional buyers in the Cibc World Market. After this allocation, the group’s net position reached a high of $785.7 million as of late January 2025. The trend is set for this late player in the Stargate project, and so it is for Alphabet. Over the past month, Alphabet’s short interest collapsed by 7.8%, giving investors a sign of bearish capitulation in the face of this new development. More than that, institutional buyers from Davenport & Co. boosted their Alphabet stock holdings by 1.4% as of January 2025. This may not sound like much on a percentage basis. Still, it did bring the group’s position to a high of $182.4 million today as another bullish sign in the Stargate investment outlook. 14. ‘Mad’ Green Party council wants to collect ****** bin bags once a month ‘Mad’ Green Party council wants to collect ****** bin bags once a month A Green council has been branded “mad” after it proposed collecting household bins once a month. Bristol city council could become the first local authority in England to introduce the policy, which it claims will save £2.3 million and help the environment. The plans have been fiercely criticised for their potential to increase fly-tipping and odour pollution. Benjamin Elks, grassroots development manager at the TaxPayers’ Alliance, accused the council of being “more interested in virtue-signalling than doing its job”. He said: “Bristolians are sick to the back teeth with their council’s hare-brained schemes. “Residents shouldn’t have to put up with overflowing bins and filthy streets just because the council is more interested in virtue-signalling than doing its job. “The Green-run council needs to start delivering the basic services locals expect.” ‘Utter rubbish’ Cllr Mark Weston, the leader of the Tory group on the council, said the plans were “utter rubbish”. He told The Telegraph: “The minimum residents expect from their council is to collect rubbish and they expect that to be regular and on time. “If you start taking that away, they have to question what value they are getting from their council tax. “The Greens are doing it because they want to have everyone forced to do recycling. I think they’re mad on that. “I think instead what we’ll have is a shedload of fly-tipping, waste piling up and we’ll have to book slots at the tip to take household rubbish there.” Damien Egan, Labour MP for Bristol North East, said he was “concerned” by the plans. “Clearly, a collection once a month is not enough for families and doesn’t provide value for council taxpayers money,” he said. “I am concerned that if the Green Party forces this through it will lead to a rise in fly-tipping and damage the environment.” The council’s plan to reduce bin collection services has come under fire from Tory councillors for ‘forcing’ people to recycle – Stuart Dagnall/Alamy Before last year’s general election, the Conservatives had planned to introduce a “backstop” forcing councils in England to collect bins at least once a fortnight. But authorities are now able to press ahead with less frequent collections after the Government axed the plans. Changes could save £2.3 million On Monday, Bristol city council opened a consultation on its plans to reduce collections to once every three weeks or once a month which will remain open until March. The authority has claimed the changes would save £1.3 million or £2.3 million a year respectively and that recyclable food waste constitutes a quarter of the city’s household rubbish. Cllr Heather Mack, deputy leader of the council, insisted she did not want residents to “unduly struggle”. “We would also offer larger bins for larger households, and an extra collection for people with sanitary products or nappies,” she said. The plans have provoked uproar because the authority has no plans to reduce council tax in line with the claimed savings, and instead proposed last year to increase rates by 15 per cent. Samuel Williams, the former Conservative candidate for Bristol Central, said the council was “making life increasingly difficult whilst putting up council tax”. “The city will say no [but] they will do it anyway and then we have to enjoy a month’s worth of dirty nappies overflowing across our streets in the heights of summer,” he said. Cllr Henry Michallat, the Conservative councillor for Stoke Bishop, added: “These proposals come at a time when the council are proposing increasing council tax. “This can only mean they will end up paying much more for less in terms of an absolutely essential service. “I believe that this will encourage fly tipping in certain areas, which is already a massive problem right across the whole city.” Fly-tipping concerns Cllr Andrew Brown, the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat group on the council, said residents feared the changes would lead to fly-tipping. He said: “The potential benefit is that you increase recycling rates by reducing that residual collection and therefore encouraging people to recycle more and separate all their waste accordingly. “But the concern I hear back is that there could be an increase in fly-tipping. There are hotspots around the city where it’s already an issue.” There has been a 20-fold increase in the number of councils collecting bins just once every three weeks since 2015. A number of authorities across Britain have switched to monthly collections, including Fife council and Conwy county borough council. 16. Intel quietly slashes prices of Xeon 6 CPUs by up to $5,340 Intel quietly slashes prices of Xeon 6 CPUs by up to $5,340 In an unexpected move, Intel quietly cut the prices of its latest Xeon 6 ‘Granite Rapids’ processors approximately four months after their formal introduction in late September. The price slash is quite dramatic as the flagship model now costs $12,460, or $5,340 less than at launch. As a result, Intel’s Xeon 6 CPUs are now cheaper than AMD’s latest EPYC ‘Genoa’ processors both in absolute numbers and in terms of per-core pricing. Intel’s Xeon 6-series ‘Granite Rapids’ processors were the company’s most expensive CPUs ever. However, they are now considerably cheaper than they were four months ago. Intel has not officially announced the price cuts, but these adjustments are reflected in the company’s online database at ark.intel.com, meaning the price changes are official. Depending on the model, the price reduction varies from $1,585 for the 96-core Xeon 6975P all the way to $5,340 for the 128-core range-topping Xeon 6980P. As for percentages, three out of five Xeon 6 ‘Granite Rapids’ processors are now 30% cheaper, while two saw reductions of 13% (6972P) and 20% (6952P). Swipe to scroll horizontally Intel and AMD Performance Core Processors Model Price Old Price Price Per Core Cores/Threads Base/Boost (GHz) TDP L3 Cache (MB) cTDP (W) Xeon 6980P (GNR) $12,460 $17,800 $97 128 / 256 2.0 / 3.9 500W 504 – Xeon 6979P (GNR) $11,025 $15,750 $92 120 / 240 2.1 / 3.9 500W 504 – EPYC Genoa 9654 $11,805 $11,805 $123 96 / 192 2.4 / 3.7 360W 384 320-400 Xeon 6972P (GNR) $10,220 $11,805 $106 96 / 192 2.4 / 3.9 500W 480 – Xeon 6952P (GNR) $9,115 $11,400 $95 96 / 192 2.1 / 3.9 400W 480 ? The range-topping 128-core Xeon 6980P is now less expensive than AMD’s top-of-the-line 96-core EPYC 9654, as are other members of the Granite Rapids family compared to their direct rivals from AMD’s 5th Generation EPYC lineup. However, there is a major development beyond that. Perhaps even more significant is that Intel’s Xeon 6900P-series processors are now cheaper than AMD’s EPYC 9600-series CPUs in per-core pricing. This may not sound like a big deal in general, but it makes Intel’s Xeon ‘Granite Rapids’ processors more competitive for cloud service providers that strive for multiple metrics, including performance per socket, cores per socket, performance per watt, and of course, total cost of ownership (TCO). As for TCO, this aspect may not be the strongest point of Granite Rapids when compared to AMD’s Genoa. For example, AMD’s 96-core EPYC 9654 has a processor base power of 360W, whereas Intel’s 96-core 6972P consumes a rather whopping 500W, thus resulting in a higher TDP. It should be noted that we are dealing with Intel’s Recommended Customer Price (RCP), which represents 1,000-unit purchase quantities. Big server OEMs like Dell, HPE, and Lenovo, as well as major CSPs like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, Meta, and Microsoft Azure, purchase Intel’s processors in much larger quantities and at different prices that are often negotiated. Furthermore, large CSPs also tend to buy the so-called off-roadmap parts with specifications tailored to their performance and TCO requirements at pre-arranged quantities. Therefore, RCP pricing has little, if any, effect on actual purchase prices for the big players. Then again, the very fact that Intel needed to lower the prices of its leading-edge Xeon 6900P-series ‘Granite Rapids’ processors by as much as $5,340 per unit indicates that it is not exactly satisfied with the number of units sold and would like to increase sales. Another reason for the price reduction could be Intel’s intention to stop, or at least slow down, AMD’s strengthening position in the data center CPU market. AMD commanded a 24.2% share of the data center CPU market in Q3 2024, its highest share since the mid-2000s, according to Mercury Research. 17. 5 Space Stocks to Watch as the Industry Reaches New Heights 5 Space Stocks to Watch as the Industry Reaches New Heights 2024 was a breakout year for space stocks, with many companies making headlines for their rapid growth and innovative advancements. Rocket Lab (NASDAQ:), for instance, was a standout, with its stock skyrocketing over 360% in 2024 as the company met rising demand for small satellite launches. President Trump’s renewed focus on space exploration, including bold ambitions briefly mentioned in his inauguration speech to return to the Moon and reach Mars, has added fresh excitement and enthusiasm for space stocks. Despite their already impressive performance year-over-year, many of these companies remain largely under the radar for investors. However, given Trump’s latest comments and increasing commercial interest, the space industry might be poised for further expansion. 5 Space Stocks to Watch in 2025 as Excitement Grows 1. Rocket Lab Rocket Lab continues to impress investors by focusing on small satellite launches, spacecraft systems, and reusable rockets like the Electron. In 2024, the stock surged over 360%, driven by strong execution and growing demand for space access. With nearly 70% of its revenue coming from launch services and space systems, Rocket Lab is well-positioned to meet the need for satellite deployment, expected to exceed 10,000 satellites by 2030. Looking ahead, the company’s medium-lift Neutron rocket, set to debut in 2025, is a potential game-changer. This rocket will allow for larger payloads, opening the door to new customers and revenue streams. Rocket Lab’s expanded partnership with NASA under the VADR program also strengthens its position as a leader in cost-effective, reliable launches. 2. Redwire Corporation Redwire Corp (NYSE:) specializes in space infrastructure and technology, providing essential components such as solar arrays, sensors, and deployable booms. The company’s stock has gained an incredible 650% over the previous year, reflecting its vital role in supporting government and commercial space missions. Notable projects include contributions to the European Space Agency’s Hera mission and involvement in Firefly Aerospace’s lunar lander. As demand for space-based manufacturing and biotech solutions grows, Redwire’s expertise positions it well for future growth. With its innovative product portfolio and early success in 2025, the company is a compelling pick for investors seeking exposure to space infrastructure. 3. Virgin Galactic Virgin Galactic (NYSE:) has been a pioneer in commercial space tourism, offering customers the chance to experience space travel firsthand. However, the company faced significant headwinds in 2024, with its stock dropping 86%. Despite these challenges, the company’s vision remains ambitious, focusing on both tourism and research collaborations. Analysts have mixed views on the stock, but with a consensus price target forecasting a 374% upside, Virgin Galactic could be a high-risk, high-reward opportunity if it can overcome operational and financial hurdles and reignite investor confidence. 4. Intuitive Machines Intuitive Machines (NASDAQ:) has carved out a niche in lunar exploration, positioning itself as a critical partner for NASA’s Artemis program. In 2024, the company secured a $4.82 billion contract to support lunar missions, including deploying communication systems and infrastructure on the Moon. Its upcoming IM-2 mission in 2025, which will establish a cellular network on the lunar surface, highlights its innovative approach. After a 700% surge over the previous year, Intuitive Machines is already off to a strong start in 2025, reflecting optimism about its role in enabling humanity’s return to the Moon. 5. AST SpaceMobile Ast Spacemobile (NASDAQ:) is on a mission to provide satellite-based broadband connectivity to areas beyond the reach of traditional networks. While the company is still mainly in its pre-revenue stage, its stock rose over 538% over the previous year, reflecting enthusiasm for its disruptive potential. Currently trading in a bullish formation near a key breakout level, AST SpaceMobile is positioned to benefit from government support for space-based communications. Although speculative, the company’s innovative approach to global connectivity could drive long-term value if it can achieve its ambitious goals. Into The Breach Shuts Down After Esports CEO Embezzles Thousands Into The Breach Shuts Down After Esports CEO Embezzles Thousands Into The Breach, a United Kingdom-based esports organization, is winding down its operations due to its CEO’s embezzling of funds, leaving the organization in an “unsustainable” position. According to one of the organization’s CS2 players, the CEO “scammed” players out of thousands. Per an official announcement from the organization, an investigation into the company began after “recent events…highlighted significant mismanagement.” ITB discovered that “an individual entrusted with all financial and monetary decisions was embezzling funds.” On X, ITB CS2 player Owen “smooya” Butterfield pointed the finger at CEO Sam “STM” Macedonio, claiming he was the one laundering money and scamming $500,000 from his own players. In his own post on X, Macedonio admitted fault, owing the decisions he made to a “destructive, alcoholic narcissist” side of him “hellbent on self-immolation.” Macedonio noted there will be “several legal consequences” that he will accept and face. In the replies of his post, Macedonio said that Into The Breach made around £5.5 million between 2023 and 2024. He said that he took around £600,000 in “director’s loans,” which he claims he blew on “benders and self-harm action.” In his post, Macedonio made mention of the breakout moment for Into The Breach, when the relatively unknown organization surprised the Counter-Strike world with a playoff run at the BLAST Paris Major in 2023. The success brought on by that run prompted the organization to return to Dota 2 and Rainbow Six, and also enter competitive Halo for the first time. Both Into The Breach and Macedonio have said that any available funds will be given to players who have lost money. All players across the various ITB esports divisions will now become free agents. 23. Xbox has enlisted a veteran Gears of War studio to co-develop the next series entry Xbox has enlisted a veteran Gears of War studio to co-develop the next series entry People Can Fly is co-developing Gears of War: E-Day with Xbox studio The Coalition, it’s been announced. The Polish developer has a long-standing history with the franchise dating back to when it was owned by original creator Epic Games. It was a co-development partner on Gears of War 1-3, and the lead developer of Gears of War: Judgment. “Returning to collaborate on the next chapter of this legendary saga is both a privilege and an exciting opportunity to build upon the intense, visceral action and rich storytelling that fans have come to love,” said People Can Fly CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski. “We are deeply grateful for our partners’ trust and support on this journey.” Microsoft announced the next mainline entry in the Gears of War series at last summer’s Xbox Games Showcase. E-Day is billed as an origin story that “depicts the horror of Locust invasion on Emergence Day through the eyes of Marcus Fenix”. Following its reveal, it was claimed that Microsoft could release the game in 2025. “Gears of War: E-Day is not just our next major game; it’s a return to what makes Gears of War games special and authentic,” Mike Crump, studio head at The Coalition, said in today’s announcement. “We’re pleased to be partnering with the talented folks at People Can Fly who have been a part of our franchise’s legacy for so long.” People Can Fly development director Guillaume Barry added: “Our team at People Can Fly, made up of dedicated Gears of War fans, is pouring everything we have into creating an experience that will exceed expectations. While we can’t share more just yet, we’re eager for the day when we can show all the exciting things we’ve been working on.” Last month, People Can Fly announced plans to lay off a significant number of employees due to “external market pressures”. CEO Wojciechowski said the Painkiller, Bulletstorm and Outriders studio was “suspending or parting ways with more than 120 talented Aviators” as it reduced its self-publishing plans and suspended work on an unannounced game. 24. DLSS Swapper now updates FSR, XeSS, and DLSS, too — Supports all major upscaling/frame gen technologies DLSS Swapper now updates FSR, XeSS, and DLSS, too — Supports all major upscaling/frame gen technologies DLSS Swapper has received a new update that ironically adds support for FSR and XeSS. The tool now lets you update all major upscaling and frame generation technologies for your games at the click of a button. This also includes Intel’s new XeLL and Nvidia’s Ray Reconstruction, saving you the hassle of manually searching and replacing DLL files for each game. For the uninitiated, FSR, DLSS, and XeSS all depend on underlying DLL files that have the potential to improve image quality and even performance with each update. Upgrading your current version is as simple as replacing the old DLLs with the newer ones. DLSS Swapper is a free utility that allows you to conveniently upgrade/downgrade the DLSS versions of your game library, eliminating the need for manual DLL replacement. With version 1.1, DLSS Swapper is no longer exclusive to DLSS. It now supports FSR 3.1 and XeSS, XeSS Frame Generation, and XeLL technologies. The new version also lets you update DLL files for Nvidia’s Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction solutions in a single interface. It’s important to note that your game must have built-in support for the technology; otherwise, the option will be blanked out. In the attached image, Witcher 3 does not support XeSS Frame Generation; hence updates are unavailable. Modding frame generation into games is possible with open-source tools like DLSS Enabler, but we cannot guarantee a stable experience. (Image credit: Future) The patch notes mention that the new update lets you add games manually, use custom game cover art, and write per-game notes to highlight any key changes or modifications to the DLL files. As of this writing, a newer version, 1.1.1, is available, which irons out a handful of bugs in the previous release. If you wish to use Nvidia’s new transformer model for DLSS, that requires changing the DLSS preset which isn’t supported by DLSS Swapper yet. For that purpose, try out DLSSTweaks or the Nvidia Profile Inspector instead. You can download DLSS Swapper on GitHub under the “Releases” section to the right. At the moment, the software is only available for Windows, so Linux users will need to look for other alternatives. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox.
