Nvidia Stock Price Colossally Crashes After New DeepSeek AI Model Emerges
Nvidia remains one of the world’s largest companies by market cap, but the chip-maker is having a tough day on the stock market today. The company’s share price slid by nearly 17% today, wiping out more than $500 billion in market cap. Should this hold through the end of the trading day, it would be far and away the biggest single-day trading loss for a company in history. Nvidia’s previous $279 billion one-day dip is the existing record-holder.
Why is Nvidia stock tanking? The stock price had been surging for the past two years as investors felt bullish on the company’s fortunes due to excitement in the market about artificial intelligence. Nvidia sells the necessary GPUs to train large-language models and for general AI use, after all.
But at the end of last week, ******** AI start-up DeepSeek launched a new model, R1, that the company claims is far cheaper than other models out there, including Open AI’s o1. The fear from investors, it seems, is that AI companies may not actually require as much computing power as it was once believed. This, in turn, could have spooked investors and sent Nvidia’s stock price down.
Some of Nvidia’s rivals in the AI space, including Arm and Broadcom, also saw their share prices slump on Monday. Stock prices regularly move, sometimes dramatically so, in response to relevant market announcements.
DeepSeek is not new, but instead was founded after a spin-out from hedge fund High-Flyer in 2023. DeepSeek’s own paper said its R1 model was trained for a cost of about $5.6 million, which is just a small percentage of what OpenAI and others are said to have spent on their systems. Because DeepSeek’s systems have made strides in software, they could be less reliant on hardware like the GPUs that Nvidia sells, and some experts believe DeepSeek might signal a sea-change in the AI landscape.
The emergence of DeepSeek’s new model comes not long after President Trump announced a $500 billion AI infrastructure program, Stargate, led by investments from OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. At least some of that appears to consist of existing investments that were previously announced.
As Motley Fool points out, there are some that believe DeepSeek is not being totally honest in explaining the true costs of its systems. AI researcher Nathan Lampert estimates DeepSeek’s true training costs as being as high as $1 billion. Other AI experts, like Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, believe DeepSeek and others actually have more Nvidia chips than they may be allowed to disclose given export rules.

The launch of DeepSeek hasn’t gone totally smoothly for the company. DeepSeek’s own website states that it’s facing “large-scale malicious attacks” on its services just days after releasing.
Nvidia is the No. 3 company worldwide based on market cap, only trailing behind Apple and Microsoft. The company’s next move is launching its new GTX 50-series GPUs, which go on ***** this week.

There’s more than just gravity at work in the solar system

Ever since Isaac Newton famously talked about gravity, its dominance as a force in our solar system has been well known. It’s responsible for the orbits of the planets and their satellites, but there are other forces that have shaped our planetary neighborhood.
A new paper discusses how recoiling ice from comets can push them around and how the radiation pressure from the sun drives material outward. There are also relativistic effects that can cause particles to spiral inward toward the sun.
Gravity is the force that governs the structure and motion of the solar system, keeping celestial bodies together in a cosmic dance. The sun, with its immense mass, generates the strongest gravitational pull, anchoring planets, asteroids, comets and other objects in orbit around it. Each planet’s orbit results from the balance between its velocity and the sun’s gravitational force, creating elliptical paths described by Kepler’s laws of motion.
Similarly, moons remain in orbit around their host planets due to the gravitational forces exerted by their parent planet. Gravity not only maintains the stability of these orbits but also influences phenomena like tides on Earth, caused by the moon’s gravitational pull.
The paper, authored by David Jewitt from the University of California and published in The Planetary Science Journal, explores other forces that shape our solar system. Gravity certainly describes the motion of planetary mass bodies, but there are other forces that impart forces upon smaller bodies that are susceptible to their effects.
These forces include, but are not limited to, recoil (as per Newton’s third law of motion that every action has an equal and opposite reaction), torque from mass loss, radiation pressure and more.
The aim of the paper is to offer a simple yet informative overview of the various nongravitational forces at play in the solar system. There are references to relevant applications from existing papers and publications, presenting them in a way that is accessible to non-specialists.
An important point to note is that the paper assumes that all orbits are circular, whereas real bodies are not perfectly spherical and orbits are not perfectly circular. The author asserts that these approximations ensure that rough estimates of the magnitudes of forces can still be achieved.
Among the nongravitational forces considered in the paper, the largest by far is the recoil produced by the sublimation of ice on comets and asteroids. The heat from the sun causes the ice to immediately turn into a gas rather than melt to a liquid: This is the sublimation process.
Like a bullet leaving a gun, however, and in accordance with Newton’s laws, when the ice sublimates, the escaping volatile gases will carry momentum and exert a recoil force on the body. The process of sublimation depends largely on temperature and acts in the antisolar direction.
Related to the appearance of comets is another force, radiation pressure, that shapes their distinctive tails. It’s the force exerted by light when photons transfer momentum to an object such as cometary dust and gas pushing them away. The pressure depends on the intensity of the radiation and the object’s reflectivity, with more reflective objects experiencing greater force. Though small, radiation pressure can shape comet tails and gradually alter the orbits of small bodies in the solar system.

FBI insider raises concerns about Kash Patel’s role in hostage rescue
Days before this week’s high-stakes confirmation hearing of Kash Patel to be FBI director, a bureau insider has come forward with new information questioning Patel’s judgment during sensitive hostage rescue missions, CBS News has learned.
The whistleblower, whose identity is being withheld by Senate Democrats for fear of retaliation, worked with the FBI’s Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, which leads the government’s missions to rescue hostages overseas. He alleges that Patel violated firmly entrenched protocols to keep such operations under wraps until the captives are safely in U.S. hands and their families have been notified.
In a letter obtained by CBS News, Sen. ***** Durbin, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, wrote that Patel, while serving on the National Security Council during the first Trump term, “broke protocol regarding hostage rescues by publicly commenting without authorization on the then-in-progress retrieval of two Americans held captive by Iranian-backed militants in Yemen in October 2020.”
According to the letter, on Oct. 14 at 10:55 a.m., the Wall Street Journal published a story in which Patel confirmed that the two American captives and the remains of a third were exchanged for two hundred Houthi fighters who were being held in Saudi Arabia. According to the letter, the news report was published “several hours before the hostages were in the confirmed custody of the United States.” In the end the Americans returned home safely, but FBI officials involved in the mission were livid over Patel’s leak, which they regarded as reckless and potentially risking tragic results.

Democratic senators sent the letter Monday morning to Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Acting Treasury Secretary David Lebryk and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. It asks for all records of communications between Patel and the FBI’s Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell concerning the rescue of the captives, as well as any records reflecting authorization for him to disclose the hostage deal before there was confirmation that the Americans were safely in U.S, hands.
No Republican senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee signed the letter.
A source close to the confirmation said in response to the allegations, “Mr. Patel was a public defender, decorated prosecutor and accomplished national security official that kept Americans safe. He has a track record of success in every branch of government, from the court room to congressional hearing room to the situation room. There is no veracity to this anonymous source’s complaints about protocol.”
The Durbin letter offers a glimpse into the Democratic strategy for Thursday’s confirmation hearing. Knowledgeable sources tell CBS News that senators will seek to show that Patel has engaged in a pattern of poor judgment and self-aggrandizement regarding sensitive life-and-death missions and use that portrayal to cast doubt on his fitness to lead the FBI.
The letter says any official “who puts missions or the lives of Americans in jeopardy for public notoriety and personal gain is unfit to lead the country’s primary federal law enforcement and investigative agency.”
The Democrats plan to highlight another instance where Patel has been criticized for his handling of a sensitive operation aimed at freeing American captives. Two weeks after the Yemen hostage deal, Patel found himself in the middle of another high-risk operation. Philip Walton was a 27-year-old American who had been seized by armed men at his farm in ******, near the ********* border.
The kidnappers transported Walton to Nigeria and demanded a million dollars in ransom. There were also indications that the kidnappers were contemplating turning him over to a terrorist group operating in the region. Patel was accompanying President Trump on a visit to Fort Bragg, the military installation in North Carolina that is home to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command. While they were there, Patel received intelligence that Walton would be held at an encampment for several hours, enough time to stage a daring Seal Team 6 raid to rescue the hostage. Mr. Trump signed off on the operation, which involved parachuting into Northern Nigeria and trekking for miles to the compound where Walton was being held.
Then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper had greenlit the plan, but there were still some final questions that needed to be answered before he could give the go order – primarily whether the ********* government had given the U.S. permission to use its air space. According to Esper’s memoir, Patel, who was the senior director for counterterrorism at the time, assured Defense Department officials that the State Department had received the necessary permission from the **********. But Patel’s information was incorrect: the ********** had not given their approval.
By this time, Air Force planes carrying the Navy SEALs were in the air just a few miles from the ********* border. Esper wrote in his memoir, “A Sacred Oath,” he realized the government had to make an agonizing decision. He told the White House they could go forward with the operation and risk having their planes shot down — or abort the mission and miss a crucial opportunity to save Walton. But at the last minute, word came that the State Department had received clearance to use ********* airspace. The mission went forward, was executed flawlessly, and Walton was returned to safety.
But Esper and other officials were furious at the role Patel had played, believing he had inserted himself into the operation in violation of regular protocol, and then nearly botched it by transmitting false information. According to Esper’s account, Patel’s carelessness carried significant risk for the SEALs.
“I was concerned that being packed in an aircraft burning holes in the sky for an extra hour or so would wear on the special operators, that it might affect their readiness somehow,” he wrote in his memoir.
Esper also wrote of the incident, “My team suspected Patel made the approval story up, but they didn’t have all the facts.”
Patel has denied Esper’s version of events. In his own book, “Government Gangsters,” Patel portrays Esper as a “deep-state” actor who “always seemed to be subverting the president’s agenda,” including by putting up obstacles to counterterrorism raids in Africa and the Middle East.” He argued that Mr. Trump had the ultimate authority to order the mission.
Last week, Durbin met with Patel and asked him about Esper’s account of his role in the nearly botched ********* raid. Sources said Patel again refuted Esper’s version of events. Durbin did not yet have the whistleblower’s information about the Yemen hostage deal, but he is expected to closely question the FBI nominee about that episode at Thursday’s confirmation hearing.
However Patel’s answers those questions, there is no suspense as to how Durbin and his fellow Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee will vote. After his meeting with Patel, Durbin issued a statement saying he will not vote to confirm Patel.
“Kash Patel has neither the experience, the temperament, nor the judgment to lead the FBI,” his statement said.

Because of that, Intel’s earnings reports are closely watched by investors, analysts, and consumers alike. That makes it important to know when the next one is, what time it starts, and how you can listen to it live. These quarterly updates provide insights into a company’s financial health, performance across key divisions, and general outlooks for the months ahead.

The Last Intel Earnings Report
When Intel announced its earnings for Q3 FY2024, it announced that it’s year-over-year net revenue fell by 6.17% to $13.28 billion from $14.16 billion. Intel said that the decline in revenue was due to restructuring costs after laying off 15% of its global workforce along with more investments into different areas of research and development.

The Steam Deck Verified program was a good start, but it’s time to move on.
Valve separates compatibility with the Steam Deck into four buckets. You have Verified games, which have a green check mark for Valve’s seal of approval, and you have Playable games, which would normally get a Verified badge had it not been for some small issues (i.e. small text or invoking the on-screen keyboard). Those are the two categories you gravitate toward.
Then, there are Unsupported games, which have what Valve sees as a game-breaking issue, such as the use of anti-cheat software that doesn’t work properly on Linux. And finally, Unknown games, which Valve just doesn’t know anything about — there are a lot of games on Steam. Valve lays out four criteria to earn a Verified badge, which you can see below.

Something that isn’t included here but does show up on Verified games is this line: “This game’s default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck.” Valve has taken some flack for that, particularly with problematic games on the Steam Deck like The Last of Us Part One and No Rest for the Wicked. But overall, this has been a good system.

It’s not perfect, but it’s a good shorthand for quickly knowing if a game will work or not. If you want to go deeper, websites like ProtonDB are fantastic, but the Deck Verified program still has its place. I know, at a glance, that I can play Marvel Rivals on my Steam Deck, but I can’t play Apex Legends. That’s helpful, albeit far from perfect.
But handhelds are changing, as are games, and it’s time for the Deck Verified program to change along with them.

The most obvious sign of that is the Lenovo Legion Go S that comes with SteamOS installed. This handheld is set to launch in a few short months, it’s officially licensed by Valve, and it shows the same Deck Verified badges that the Steam Deck does. That doesn’t make a lot of sense. The Steam Deck and the Lenovo Legion Go S have two different chips in them, and presumably with a decently large performance gap between them — read my Steam Deck versus ROG Ally comparison for more on that. The idea of something being verified for the Steam Deck kind of falls apart when we’re not talking about the Steam Deck.
That’s just one device, but Valve says it plans to release SteamOS more broadly into beta before Lenovo’s handheld releases. It’s just a beta release, so bugs, performance issues, and other problems are expected. But Valve clearly has ambitions for SteamOS beyond one device, and third-party versions of Valve’s open-source operating system, such as Bazzite, are becoming increasingly popular. I’m all for that expansion, but the more devices that use SteamOS, the less helpful the Deck Verified program becomes.
The expansion of SteamOS is so exciting because there are handhelds that are more powerful than the Steam Deck. I don’t really want to spend $800 on an ROG Ally X if I can get the same experience on a Steam Deck OLED for $650. But the ROG Ally X is more powerful, and capable of running more demanding games, which justifies the extra cost. Hardware is meeting the demands of games, but the Deck Verified program can’t come along for the ride.

Maybe you can squeeze another Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or Cyberpunk 2077 under the Deck Verified badge, but anyone who’s played these games on the Steam Deck can tell you that the system is at its limit. As time goes on, we’ll see more games like Stalker 2, Warhammer 40K: Darktide, and Silent Hill 2 that are Unsupported simply because they’re too demanding to run on the Steam Deck. Valve was able to use this system for three years, but I don’t think it can survive another three.
If you’re not onboard yet, think about the Steam Deck 2. Valve says it’ll release a sequel to the Steam Deck when it feels there’s a “generational leap in compute without sacrificing battery life.” When that happens, will we have a system where some games are Verified but others, like Silent Hill 2, are only Verified for the Steam Deck 2? I don’t want to deal with that. I already went through the whole New Nintendo 3DS fiasco — Valve can do better.
Some simple fixes
I’m not here to just complain. I have some ideas, too. And thankfully, they wouldn’t drastically change the Deck Verified program all while making it a lot more useful as SteamOS (and handhelds more broadly) scale up.
First, performance can’t be part of the equation. Valve’s official criteria don’t specifically call out performance, but performance is still a part of the program. Games that are too demanding won’t be Verified. It’s time for Valve to draw a line in the sand on performance as we see different handhelds that are using different screens and different hardware configurations. The program should tackle if the game works on SteamOS, or if it doesn’t; that’s the only long-term solution without chasing new performance targets every few years.

In its place, Valve should use its strongest asset: the Steam community. There are a lot of ways Valve could go about this. Maybe there are some dropdowns in game reviews that show if the player used a handheld or not, and what handheld they used. And, maybe you can filter those reviews so you can easily find them instead of scanning the first few that pop up and hoping for something helpful. That helps players, and it even helps developers, as you can filter out performance-related issues on handhelds — I remember quite a bit of vitriol about No Rest for the Wicked at launch related to Steam Deck performance issues.
Valve could also have them in a separate area, maybe with suggestions from users on how to get the best performance. That’s one of the draws of ProtonDB, after all. If Valve wanted to maintain its open-source approach to software, it might even be able to integrate ProtonDB into the Deck Verified program — there are already ways to do that through the Deck Tools software.
Beyond filtering out performance, the Deck Verified program needs more specifics about what constitutes an Unsupported game. Right now, the range is fairly large, from games that flat-out won’t work to titles that will work — and work well — with some inconvenient setup. For example, Batman: Arkham Asylum is Unsupported, but it works fine. You need to manually tap the launcher, and sleeping your handheld during gameplay can boot you back to the main menu if you’re connected to Wi-Fi. That’s significantly different than something like Apex Legends which won’t work due to its anti-cheat software.
I don’t want Valve to endlessly add more badges to the Deck Verified program, but one additional segment of games that work with significant workarounds would be welcome, particularly for older games like Arkham Asylum that aren’t likely to see an update. Once again, Valve could leverage its community or point users toward ProtonDB if they want more information on the workarounds.
Valve won’t ever make the Deck Verified program perfect. Trying to create a simple program to tackle support that’s inherently complex is bound to have contradictions and oversights. However, the Deck Verified program can still be significantly better than it is now. And with the rising tide of SteamOS, it’s time to make those changes.

Nudging with carbon footprint labeling and product categorization motivates online shoppers to select plant-based foods, according to new research published by agricultural economists at Purdue University and the University of Kentucky.
“A lot of research has been done on point-of-purchase nudges, but that has been done in a physical setting. In this study, we look at that in the growing domain of online grocery shopping,” said Bhagyashree Katare, associate professor of agricultural economics at Purdue University.
“It provides actionable evidence that small interventions can increase the selection of plant-based products or healthy products.”
Katare and co-author Shuoli Zhao, assistant professor of agricultural economics at the University of Kentucky, generated their results using the Open Science Online Grocery platform. The platform simulates a typical online grocery shopping experience by listing more than 11,000 food products across all product categories, from produce to beverages.
Katare and Zhao published their results in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The paper appears in the PNAS collection of special features on the sustainability of animal-sourced foods and plant-based alternatives.
Restaurants and cafeterias have effectively used nudges to promote sustainable consumption. Such nudges have been less effective, however, in educating consumers with information about the environmental impact of their choices.
“Empirical evidence shows that carbon footprint labeling can steer consumers toward more sustainable food choices at supermarkets,” Katare and Zhao noted. “However, most studies involving purchase decisions were primarily composed of hypothetical surveys and laboratory experiments that may not always reflect actual consumer behavior in real-world situations.”
Previously, researchers have relied on online surveys in which they ask consumers whether or not they would buy certain products. The paper cited 2021 data reporting that more than 45% of consumers regularly shop for groceries online. This led the duo to study the effectiveness of carbon footprint labeling in an online shopping environment that more realistically represented a common consumer shopping experience.
More than 2,350 U.S. residents took part in the study. Participants selected from an array of products in the meat, milk, yogurt and cheese categories. Of the 8,320 grocery items the group checked out in their virtual carts, 5,200 were plant-based products.
“The average price showed a marginal premium for plant-based products at $3.65 compared to $3.13 for their animal-sourced counterparts,” Katare and Zhao wrote. “Almost 16% of the participants did not select any plant-based products.”
Previous studies have found that providing information alone works less effectively than combining it with some form of nudging.
“We saw that labeling had the most effect,” Katare said. The finding differed from the results of other studies. Providing information alone has proven less effective, as found in studies both by Katare and others.
“Labeling probably is the more effective strategy when it comes to choices for food consumption,” she said. “Information plus categorization, which was our other nudge, had a higher effect that just categorization.”

In 2018, Katare and a co-author published a study on “Low-cost approaches to increasing gym attendance” in the Journal of Health Economics. In that study, Katare sent two types of nudges to college students that encouraged them to visit the campus recreation center.
The first nudge, a financial incentive, offered to enter the students into a lottery to win a gift card for making regular visits to the rec center. The second nudge told students how their physical exercise activity compared to that of their peers. Katare found that the lottery nudge had a modest positive effect on rec center visits. The peer-comparison nudge, however, had little impact.
Katare and her collaborators have plans to add new functions to the online shopping app to encourage further research of this type. They also plan to see if their methods may help reduce food access issues that plague many rural areas. It may be possible to use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—Education and online shopping to show rural residents in Indiana and elsewhere how they can best access a nutritious diet.
“Rural areas have food access issues, and online shopping is one way that we can reduce the food access issues that we have,” she said.

Digital Trends gave the PlayStation 5 release of Rise of the Ronin a 7 out 10. The Steam version will seemingly keep all of the good and make improvements exclusive to PC gamers with 3D audio, DirectX 12 Ultimate support, and much more.
Even with these upgrades, the system requirements aren’t overwhelming. You’ll need at least 16GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 or better, and 180GB of available space on your drive. It needs an Intel Core i5-10400 or better, and Steam strongly recommends using an SSD. Rise of the Ronin will be available March 10 for $50 on Steam, but you can preorder now.

If you live in an area where packages are sometimes stolen, it makes sense to want a secure delivery box. That’s where this cool Raspberry Pi Pico project created by maker and developer Woodycal comes into play. Using our favorite microcontroller, he’s put together a delivery box with a clever locking system that keeps the box secure once a package has been delivered.
When the box is in drop-off mode, it remains unlocked so that delivery personnel can deposit packages into it. Once the box has been opened, it will automatically lock again after three minutes. This ensures that the delivery can’t be tampered with until you return home or unlock the box remotely.
The remote control system is handled from a web app. It has a couple of different settings that you can trigger manually or otherwise let them automatically activate as needed. We already touched on the drop-off mode, but there are two other modes, including one in which the box is armed and one disarmed. When the box is armed, an alarm will go off if it detects six separate vibrations—presuming that someone is trying to break into the box.

If you have a model with network access, you can replicate this project with a Pico W or Pico 2W. It’s connected to several relay modules, a vibration sensor, reed switches, a siren, an electric bolt lock, and even a BME 280, which reports temperature and humidity. A 12V battery powers everything.
Woodycal created all of the code for this project, which has been made open-source for anyone who wants to reise software that is Python-based and can easily be copied to a Pico. The code is available to explore on the official project page of GitHub.

In contrast to conventional organic synthesis, mechanochemistry does not use solvents that eventually become industrial wastes. Thus, mechanochemistry is environmentally friendly and enables us to perform organic synthesis using reactants that poorly dissolve into common solvents.
As solvents are not used, reactants used for organic synthesis are often in the solid state. Previous experimental studies have suggested that the force applied by the ball to the system accelerates the chemical reaction, but it is not well understood how macroscopic forces influence chemical reactions on the molecular scale.
Compared to conventional methods for organic synthesis, the theoretical foundation of mechanochemical organic synthesis is still in its infancy. A deeper understanding of reaction kinetics within mechanochemical reactions will be crucial for advancing the field towards becoming a conventional strategy itself.
To this end, a research team led by Associate Professor Tetsuya Yamamoto at the Institute for Chemical Reaction Design and Discovery (WPI-ICReDD), Hokkaido University, has developed a theory that predicts reaction rates in mechanochemical organic reactions using a ball mill.
Their work, published in the journal RSC Mechanochemistry, was accomplished through a collaboration between researchers specializing in organic chemistry and rheology.
Chemical reactions between solid reactants occur at the interface between them to form a product. The new theory predicts that a layer containing mostly products formed at this interface determines the reaction rate.
The theory predicts a cause for reaction acceleration: due to the ****** colliding, a force is applied to the interface of the reactants, where the product is formed. This force reduces the thickness of the product-rich layer, and induces faster collisions between reactants, leading to increased product formation.
“This study is the first attempt to make a kinetic theory of mechanochemical reaction by focusing on interfaces. It will form the basis to develop theories to provide further insight into the mechanism of reaction acceleration by applied mechanical forces,” said the study’s first author, Associate Professor Tetsuya Yamamoto.
“The detailed reaction mechanisms of mechanochemical processes remain largely enigmatic. Experimental approaches alone have proven insufficient to fully elucidate these mechanisms. However, through an outstanding collaboration at WPI-ICReDD, we have successfully developed a preliminary theoretical framework to better understand the role of mechanical forces in driving mechanochemical reactions,” said the study’s second author, Associate Professor Koji Kubota.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has reiterated that the company doesn’t have any plans to allow the release of Series X exclusive games.
It’s currently a mandatory requirement for developers to ensure that their games are compatible with both Series X and Series S in order to release them for Microsoft’s consoles.
But some developers have argued that having to cater to Microsoft’s entry-level console limits the potential of current-gen games.
Last year, Baldur’s Gate 3 received a delayed release on Xbox Series X/S after Microsoft allowed Larian Studios to launch the S version without split-screen co-op, a mode it had been struggling to get working sufficiently on the lower-powered console.
And this month, ****** Myth: Wukong developer Game Science blamed the Series S console for the game’s no-show on Xbox platforms.
However, in a new interview with Destin Legarie, Microsoft’s gaming boss claimed that having to develop games for Series S could be advantageous for studios targeting a variety of platforms, including handheld gaming systems.
Asked about the potential of dropping or relaxing Xbox Series S requirements, Spencer said: “In a way I think about it in almost exactly the opposite way right now. With the rise of handheld PCs and even the introduction so far of the Switch 2, as developers we’re building on more device specs, from lower powered—because they’re battery powered devices—all the way through things that plug into the wall. I actually think we have a real advantage because we’ve been targeting S for quite a while, that our games have been built and they’re portable across many different specs.
“So when we look at something like a Steam Deck or ROG Ally or something, we’ve got this S version of the games, that are more tailored to the device specs of a lot of devices that frankly are getting introduced right now, and I think that helps us.”
Spencer confirmed in November that Xbox was working on handheld gaming prototypes of its own, but claimed that the launch of any potential device was still years away.
He added in the newly published interview: “And frankly the scalability of engines today allows them to scale from ray tracing enabled, multi-thousand dollar graphics card on desktop PCs all the way through to a handheld battery powered device, so for me S has been helpful in our portfolio.
“I’m playing Indiana Jones on S and it looks great, so like it’s definitely capable of playing current generation games in a great way, but most of your games that are going to be out there are going to be supporting these different devices, and the S spec of what it is actually maps pretty well to the devices that we’re seeing introduced right now. So I think it actually is an important design point for teams going forward, that kind of power performance mix that you see in the Series S.”
In the same interview, Spencer reiterated that there are no red lines stopping any Xbox game from appearing on other platforms.

TESS and JWST unveil disintegrating planetary interiors

At the 2025 Meeting of the American Astronomical Society, two teams of astronomers—centered at Penn State and MIT—independently announced new discoveries about an extreme form of planetary destruction: apparently rocky planets disintegrating under the intense heat of their host stars.
The Penn State team presented novel measurements of a rocky planet’s interior composition using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), while the MIT team presented the discovery of the nearest and most rapidly disintegrating planet to date using the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The findings are published on the arXiv preprint server.
Both space observatories stared at thousands of stars in search for tiny, periodic dips of light—called transits—due to orbiting planets on orbits that fortuitously take them between Earth and the sun. Normally, these dips are symmetric and occur every several weeks or months—once every time the planet orbits its star.
In rare cases, planets orbit their stars every few hours, because they are extremely close to their stars, called ultra-short ******* planets or USPs.
Disintegrating planets are an extremely rare subcategory of USPs—only those hot enough to evaporate their surfaces and small enough that they cannot hold onto the material gravitationally can be observed. This material leaves the planet in a dynamic, chaotic process that makes the transit signal change strength every orbit. Equally as characteristic is the formation of a dust tail, much resembling that of a comet tail, as the dust escapes into space.
“These planets are literally spilling their guts into space for us, and with JWST we finally have the means to study their composition and see what planets orbiting other stars are really made of,” said Nick Tusay, a Ph.D. student at Penn State working in the Center for Exoplanets and Habitable Worlds, and the lead author of one of the studies.
“It’s remarkable that directly measuring the interior of planets in the solar system is so challenging—we have only limited sampling of the Earth’s mantle, and no access to that of Mercury, Venus, or Mars—but here we have found planets hundreds of light years away that are sending their interiors into space and backlighting them for us to study with our spectrographs,” said Jason Wright, Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics, co-author of the Penn State study, and Tusay’s Ph.D. supervisor.
“It’s a remarkable and fortuitous opportunity to understand terrestrial planet interiors,” he added.
The Penn State team trained JWST’s spectrograph at K2-22, a star discovered by the Kepler spacecraft—as part of its extended K2 mission—to host one of these evaporating planets, K2-22b. This planet orbits every 9.1 hours and has a surface temperature of 2,100 K— enough to not just melt but vaporize iron and rock into the vacuum of space.
“K2-22b has an asymmetric transit profile, as the planet’s dusty cloud of effluents comes into view in front of the star, showing evidence of extended tails like a comet,” said Tusay. Tusay’s team compared the spectrum of the star before and after transit with the spectrum during the event.
“We didn’t know what to expect,” said Wright, who also co-authored an earlier study on how to use JWST to probe these exoplanetary tails. Some astronomers expected that these planets would have already lost all of their outer materials, and just be a bare iron core.

“We were hopeful they might still have their mantles, or potentially even crust material that was being evaporated. JWST’s mid-infrared spectrograph MIRI was the perfect tool to check, because crustal, silicate mantle, and iron core materials would all transmit light in different ways that JWST could distinguish spectroscopically,” Wright added.
“We were unfortunate that we did not observe the planet when its tail was very dense, so our spectrum was weaker and harder to interpret than we anticipated,” said Tusay.
Still, they found a spectrum broadly consistent with the idea that the material is from a silicate material, for instance from a mantle. The team also found unexpected, narrow features at 4.5 and 5.1 microns.
This was not in any of the team’s original models, and appears to be consistent with carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO)—two compounds usually associated with icy bodies like comets, not the mantles of terrestrial planets like Earth or Mercury. “It was actually sort of a ‘who-ordered-that?’ moment,” said Tusay.
The team hopes that now that they have established the validity of the technique, they can make further use of JWST to verify these features at higher significance, and to gather data to help theorists better model this strange object.
Studies of such planets also took a big leap forward thanks to the efforts of the MIT team, who announced the discovery of a new disintegrating planet found by TESS, orbiting the star BD+05 4868 A.
“The disintegrating planet orbiting BD+05 4868 A has the most prominent dust tails to date,” said Marc Hon, a postdoctoral researcher at the MIT TESS Science Office and the leader of the MIT study.
“The dust tails emanating from the rapidly evaporating planet are gigantic. Its length of approximately 9 million km encircles over half the planet’s orbit around the star every 30 and a half hours,” he added.
The extent of the dust tails from BD+05 4868 Ab are revealed by the extended transit duration, lasting up to 15 hours, and the significant depth of the transits, which block over 1% of the star’s emitted light.
Like K2-22b, instead of a single comet-like tail, BD+05 4868 Ab has two—one leading and one trailing the planet’s orbit. The presence of two distinctive tails is attributed to the presence of dust grains of varying sizes emanating from the planet. The leading tail is believed to contain larger dust grains, comparable in size to desert sand, while the trailing tail primarily consists of finer grains, similar in size to soot particles.
Based on the extent of BD+05 4868 Ab’s dust tails, the MIT study infers that the planet must be rapidly disintegrating at a rate of about a moon’s worth of material every million years. With BD+05 4868 Ab taken to be about the mass of the moon, the planet will completely evaporate within one to two millions of years, which is swift on cosmic timescales.
“The rate at which the planet is evaporating is utterly cataclysmic, and we are incredibly lucky to be witnessing the final hours of this dying planet,” said Hon.
“What’s also highly exciting about BD+05 4868 Ab is that it has the brightest host star out of the other disintegrating planets—about 100 times brighter than K2-22—establishing it as a benchmark for future disintegrating studies of such systems,” said Avi Shporer, a Research Scientist at the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, and a co-author of the MIT project.
“Prior to our study, the three other known disintegrating planets were around faint stars, making them challenging to study,” he added.
The two teams have jointly submitted a JWST proposal to study BD+05 4868 A in the same manner as K2-22. “The data quality we should get from BD+05 4868 A will be exquisite,” said Shporer. “These studies have proven the validity of this approach to understanding exoplanetary interiors, and opened the door to a whole new line of research with JWST.”

It looks like I may have played myself again. I was genuinely excited about AMD’s RX 9070 XT, but now, I’m starting to worry about its future. I always knew that the new AMD flagship wouldn’t be able to compete against some of Nvidia’s best graphics cards, but I had a lot of hope that it’d still be a great competitor for a number of other reasons.
I’m not doubting the performance of the RX 9070 XT. I have no reason to, as we don’t know a thing about it — and that’s exactly why I’m worried. Not only are the GPUs still a complete mystery, but they’ve also reportedly been delayed. At this rate, I fear that AMD may have lost the war before it even started, and I’m not alone.

I felt pretty excited for the RX 9070 XT, but so far, the launch of RDNA 4 has been a harsh lesson in managing your expectations.

First, the GPUs barely got a mention during AMD’s 45-minute-long CES 2025 keynote. Then, the few slides that AMD released to the press offered very little information; we basically only learned a little bit about the RDNA 4 architecture and AMD’s performance goals. The information was vague, too — think “improved ray tracing performance” and the like.
The GPUs themselves were spotted at CES, but only those made by AMD’s partners, and they didn’t come with any specifications. So, at this stage, it’s been revealed that the RX 9070 XT comes with three fans in its Gigabyte design. That’s… not a lot.
But wait — there’s hope, or so I thought. AMD told Digital Trends that RDNA 4 would be released “in a matter of weeks,” and that the company thought that the new RX 9000 series deserved its own event. But only silence has followed.
The first update came not from AMD itself, but from B&H. The retailer put the RX 9070 XT up for ***** with a January 22 preorder date. The cards had been taken down, but then they reappeared with a release date of March 22. Finally, this tracks.

David McAfee, AMD’s vice president and general manager of the Ryzen CPU and Radeon graphics division, revealed on X (Twitter) that the cards will go on ***** in March. McAfee later added that AMD is holding onto the GPUs a little while longer in order to optimize their software stack, including FSR 4.
Meanwhile, various leakers and tipsters are having a field day with AMD’s troubled RDNA 4 launch. Recent whispers point to AMD still holding off to see how Nvidia fares. At this rate, AMD will likely get to see the RTX 5070 Ti and the RTX 5070 in their full glory before it launches the RX 9070 XT.
AMD wanted to announce its new graphics cards alongside Nvidia, but it clearly didn’t have a solid plan for actually releasing them. Now, we’ve had to cobble together various ideas about the cards from leaks, board partners, and social media posts, which doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence.
I’m losing faith, and I’m not alone

As soon as I saw David McAfee announce that RDNA 4 wouldn’t be here until March, I knew what was coming — and I wasn’t wrong. PC gaming enthusiasts, including both AMD and Nvidia fans, weren’t happy with the way it’s all gone down.
Scrolling through the hundreds of comments under McAfee’s post reveals just how badly the general public wants to know what’s going on.
Not even, a proper announcement with slides of performance, features. Could be even “price will be reveled at, a later date”. This is so bad PR… i have no words.

Sitting at over 500 likes, a comment from GawroskiT on X makes a dig at AMD’s PR team. “Not even a proper announcement. […] This is [such] bad PR. I have no words.”
Another user, PlaysRingle, promises to ditch AMD for Nvidia based on how things are going. “AMD is going to make me upgrade my RX 7900 XTX to an RTX 5080. I can’t keep defending AMD when it keeps doing these things.”
I know that I’m being fairly critical of AMD here myself, but I can’t help feeling bad when reading these comments and seeing the reactions. Some of it is really quite harsh, such as this comment from noremac258: “Does AMD ever not fail to capitalize on an opportunity? […] AMD’s graphics division is a disaster.”
What ARE you guys doing? What sort of “marketing” is this “stealth” reveal??? Your CES presence was so uninformative you’d have been better off not showing up at all, and all we get since then is THIS?

I tried to find more supportive comments, but there are very few of those to be found. However, Hardware Unboxed made a separate post defending AMD, which is what prompted McAfee to clarify that the delayed launch comes down to software optimization.
AMD delaying the launch of RDNA4 to March is the right move. The last thing they want is stuffing up the launch yet again, which they risk doing if they launch before Nvidia.
And very few people would have bought a 9070 XT just because it launched a week or two before the 5070.…

I know that X is a tough crowd, so I decided to check Reddit for more reactions. Long story short — it wasn’t pretty.
The comments under this post, sharing that RDNA 4 won’t arrive until March, are still harsh. One commenter said: “Nvidia’s release was looking rather underwhelming, so AMD had to pull out all the stops to make sure they miss the opportunity this time.”
“I perceive this as having no confidence in your own product. [AMD] had the opportunity here to seize this midrange market segment by coming out first,” said another user, pointing out that waiting for Nvidia’s RTX 5070 might backfire.

In search of people who are more in favor of AMD than Nvidia, I ventured into the r/AMD community. This post quickly showed me that people aren’t willing to cut AMD any slack.
Other than the top comment thread pictured above, all the other highly-rated comments criticize AMD. “Absolute incompetence from AMD’s GPU division, again,” says one poster. “Doesn’t a significant amount of retailers already have the cards in stock? What a fumble,” adds another.
I could go on, but you get the gist. It’s clear that people aren’t pleased, and while the internet at large is hardly ever satisfied, some of this might’ve been avoided if AMD had been more forthcoming about the RX 9000 series. People are frustrated with the delay, but also with the lack of information.
AMD could still make the RX 9070 XT a success

Things are looking a little bleak for RDNA 4 right now, but the internet is quick to forget. It’s still entirely possible for AMD to turn this around and make the launch of the RX 9000 series a success.
My opinion is that sharing some information would be better than sharing next to none; even a basic spec sheet would go a long way. Although McAfee plays a key role in AMD’s GPU strategy, most fans don’t check his X account on a daily basis. Those people are either kept in the dark or they’re left to rely on third parties to tell them what’s going on.
Letting the general public figure out AMD’s plans based on social media means that a lot of people who might have otherwise been happy to wait will now be influenced by people who are decidedly not happy. If there are hundreds of comments all saying that AMD is doing a bad job, it’s easy to start believing it yourself if you don’t have anyone telling you otherwise.
Unfortunately, right now, AMD is really not doing much to dispel that notion. A quick X post, even when coming from an AMD executive, doesn’t cut it.
Aside from some marketing efforts to drive up the hype, I think it’s now more important than ever for AMD to lean into that performance-per-dollar metric that makes GPUs like Intel’s Arc B580 such a great deal. The fact is that the RX 9070 XT might still be an exceptional GPU even if it won’t be able to beat all of its Nvidia rivals.
Most people won’t be spending $2,000 (or more) on an RTX 5090. The GPU market needs graphics cards that provide value while being able to run the latest games, and to that end, AMD’s usually done a pretty good job. Strangely enough, some of its best GPUs are the ones that didn’t get a lot of love from the marketing department, such as the RX 7900 GRE — but that’s no reason for the RX 9070 XT to also be launched with so little fanfare.
In the consumer graphics market, AMD is a small fish; Nvidia is a massive shark. Following a troubled launch, AMD may therefore now face an uphill climb with the RX 9070 XT — but I’m still hopeful.
If AMD gets the pricing right, the RX 9070 XT might still turn out to be an amazing card. On the other hand, if it’s too expensive when compared to its Nvidia rivals, it might end up being overlooked regardless of AMD’s marketing efforts. And let’s hope that those efforts actually begin soon, because so far, Nvidia’s winning the battle — but AMD could still walk away unscathed from the war.

It seems like the graphic content in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows got too much for Japanese ratings organization CERO as it has ordered Ubisoft to remove it from the game if it wishes to release the game in Japan. An official statement from Ubisoft has confirmed that Japanese players will not be able to experience the realistic nature of the game as dismemberment will be removed.

Every version of the game will have an option to turn off dismemberment, however, no such option will be provided to Japanese players as it will be permanently off. Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ development process has been full of setbacks, but finally, it seems like Ubisoft is all prepared for its release in March 2025.

Ubisoft’s official Japanese account on X has revealed that some parts of Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be removed as the studio must comply with Japanese ratings organization CERO. The game has already received a “Z” rating, which means that no one under the age of 18 can purchase the game, however, it seems like CERO still finds the game too graphic.
Players all over the world will have the option to switch off dismemberment in the game. However, this option will always be off in the Japanese version, adding that the depiction of severed limbs and body parts will also be changed in the Japanese version. On top of this, the studio has also mentioned that some of the Japanese language dialogue will be changed as well. Unfortunately, complying with CERO is the only option for Ubisoft as this could stop the game from releasing in Japan.
Despite all the setbacks, it seems like Ubisoft is well-prepared for the game’s release. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is releasing on PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox Series X/S, macOS, and iPadOS on March 20, 2025.

A lot of developers had to cut content from their games due to CERO’s regulations. In fact, some developers weren’t able to release their games in the country due to graphic content. In 2024, EA Japan General Manager Shaun Noguchi pointed out (via GameRant) that CERO refused to rate the Dead Space Remake due to its graphic content, however, Stellar Blade, which featured similar violent content, was able to earn a CERO D rating.
Capcom also had to cut some content from its 2021 game Resident Evil Village due to CERO’s regulations. In Japan, two versions of the game were released, one with a Z and one with a D rating. The biggest difference in these versions was that they didn’t feature decapitations. Overall, they contained less violence, which was certainly odd for the Resident Evil franchise.

Experiments corroborate theory about how Titan maintains its atmosphere
SwRI is studying how Saturn’s largest moon maintains its thick atmosphere. Scientists think Titan’s core is covered by several layers of ice and a subsurface liquid ocean. New experiments indicate that nitrogen and methane gases produced by the organic materials at its core could seep up to the surface, continuously replenishing Titan’s atmosphere. Southwest Research Institute partnered with the Carnegie Institution for Science to perform laboratory experiments to better understand how Saturn’s moon Titan can maintain its unique nitrogen-rich atmosphere. Titan is the second largest moon in our solar system and the only one that has a significant atmosphere.
“While just 40% the diameter of the Earth, Titan has an atmosphere 1.5 times as dense as the Earth’s, even with a lower gravity,” said SwRI’s Dr. Kelly Miller, lead author of a paper about these findings published in the journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. “Walking on the surface of Titan would feel a bit like scuba diving.”
The origin, age, and evolution of this atmosphere, which is roughly 95% nitrogen and 5% methane, has puzzled scientists since it was discovered in 1944.
“The presence of methane is critical to the existence of Titan’s atmosphere,” Miller says. “The methane is removed by reactions caused by sunlight and would disappear in about 30 million years after which the atmosphere would freeze onto the surface. Scientists think an internal source must replenish the methane, or else the atmosphere has a geologically short lifetime.”
Miller was also the lead author of a 2019 paper published in the Astrophysical Journal that proposed a theoretical model of how the atmosphere may have developed and is replenished over the years.
To understand the persistent thick atmosphere on Saturn’s largest moon, SwRI worked with the Carnegie Institution for Science Laboratory to create conditions mimicking those at Titan’s rocky core. These laboratory experiments heated and pressurized tubes of organics, producing nitrogen and methane, gases necessary to maintain Titan’s atmosphere. Credit: Southwest Research Institute
The paper theorizes that large amounts of highly complex organic materials are heated up in Titan’s rocky interior, releasing nitrogen as well as carbon gases like methane. The gas then seeps out at the surface, where it forms a thick atmosphere around the moon.
This theory is corroborated by recent experiments that heated organic materials to temperatures of 250 to 500 Celsius at pressures up to 10 kilobars to simulate the interior conditions of Titan. The experiments produced carbon gases like carbon dioxide and methane in sufficient quantities to help supply Titan’s atmospheric reservoir.
The paper is largely based on data from NASA’s Cassini-Huygens spacecraft mission, which launched in 1997 and explored the Saturn system from 2004 to 2017. NASA plans to launch its next mission to the Saturnian system in 2028 with a spacecraft dubbed Dragonfly. It will include a quadcopter designed to explore Titan up close and investigate whether environments at Titan could have ever been conducive for life. Miller is working next with a global team of researchers to study the habitability of the subsurface liquid ocean.

The flagship dilemma
It’s hard to say if the RTX 5090 or DLSS 4 won Nvidia more limelight over the past week. The RTX 5090 is undoubtedly the best graphics card you can buy, but a big part of that conversation has involved DLSS 4 and its multi-frame generation capabilities. And for good reason. DLSS 4 is remarkable, enabling gaming experiences like full path tracing in Alan Wake 2 at triple-digit frame rates without breaking a sweat.
Still, I’m worried.
DLSS 4 represents a radical change for all RTX graphics cards, from multi-frame generation for the latest RTX 50-series GPUs to a new AI model that reaches down to cards like the RTX 2060 Super. For as impressive as DLSS 4 is, however, I’m concerned that the floor will fall out from under it eventually.

Transforming the DLSS model
DLSS 4 is a much more significant update than you might believe. The headlining feature is DLSS Multi-Frame Generation or MFG, but this new version has tweaked every aspect of DLSS. That means that, yes, DLSS 4 will retroactively make DLSS better, even for older GPUs that don’t support MFG.
The big change is that Nvidia went from a convolutional neural network, or CNN, to a transformer model. Some games, such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2, let you switch between the different models within the game. However, I suspect most games with DLSS will just stick with the transformer model moving forward. If, for some reason, you prefer the CNN, you can revert to it through the Nvidia app with its new DLSS override feature.
Nvidia says that the new transformer model has more parameters, but more importantly, transformer models are self-referential. Instead of tracking every pixel throughout the scene, the new DLSS model can track specific pixels to improve image quality in problematic areas. Nvidia has demonstrated this capability, which you can see in the video above. There are clear improvements, but they aren’t universal.
Cyberpunk 2077 – DLSS Transformer Model
Above, you can see a comparison between the CNN and transformer model in Cyberpunk 2077. Without labels — or even with them, actually — it’s basically impossible to tell the difference between the two images. I searched and searched, peeping at every pixel, to find some sort of clear difference between the two, and it’s just not there. Both look great, especially considering I’m running in DLSS’ Performance mode, but I wouldn’t say the transformer model is clearly better.
Alan Wake 2 – DLSS Transformer Model
The situation is identical in Alan Wake 2, where, once again, it’s basically impossible to tell the difference between the two images. There’s a slight difference in the detail on the bench, but I’m struggling to attribute that to DLSS when there’s some layer of water blurring the camera.
But here’s the thing — the new transformer model doesn’t need to be better, especially right now. What’s important is that it’s just as good as the CNN model, at minimum, and with no hit to performance. You’ll see the benefits in some games and situations, but the transformer model isn’t a glossy new coat of paint that covers all of DLSS. Treat it like one of Nvidia’s smaller DLSS updates, which have quietly made the feature better over the past several years.
Cyberpunk 2077 – DLSS Transformer Model Scene 2
There are some improvements here, too. Take a look at another scene from Cyberpunk 2077 above. The new transformer model not only reproduces the reflections more clearly, it also deals with a ton of ghosting in the CNN model. There are these long, obvious trails behind each tail light as the cars pass the camera with the CNN model, and they completely disappear with the transformer model.
This will likely improve over time. Nvidia has said that it has a supercomputer that’s been improving DLSS for the past six years, and that work isn’t stopping with the new transformer model. Although the benefits might not show up everywhere, they’re still a welcome addition. The transformer model is available to all RTX GPUs, and it covers not only DLSS Super Resolution but also Ray Reconstruction.
One frame, two frame
OK, but I know why you’re all here. Let’s talk about MFG. Exclusive to RTX 50-series GPUs like the RTX 5090, DLSS 4 unlocks up to 4X frame generation — one rendered frame alongside three generated ones. There are 75 confirmed games that’ll support DLSS 4, though not all natively. Some will have MFG options in the graphics menu, while the rest will need a DLSS Override from the Nvidia app.

And MFG is really good in DLSS 4. The chart above speaks for itself on that front. In Alan Wake 2, I went from less than 30 frames per second (fps) on the RTX 5090 to well over 200 fps. That’s an exponential increase in performance and with excellent image quality in tow. Latency isn’t an issue, either. Nvidia does a wonderful job these days of limiting the latency hit with frame generation, and adding a couple of extra frames into the mix doesn’t significantly increase the latency — it barely moves the needle.

The situation is the same in Cyberpunk 2077. There’s barely any additional latency with frame generation turned on, even up to 4X mode. Add DLSS Super Resolution into the mix to increase the base frame rate — and reduce the total latency — and you’re sitting near 240 fps at 4K. The superpower of MFG is that it’s multiplicative; if you feed it with a higher base frame rate, you’ll get a larger performance boost out of it.

You’ll get the best experience out of MFG if you feed it with at least 60 fps, and Marvel Rivals is proof of that. In this title, my base frame rate is acceptable, and latency isn’t a concern. In a game like this, I don’t need to resort to DLSS Super Resolution. I can just use MFG to improve the smoothness of the game with a minuscule hit to the overall system latency.
The overall latency only really becomes an issue if it’s high to begin with; as you barrel toward 0ms, even “large” spikes or dips in latency only represent a few milliseconds. If you have a higher base frame rate, even a 50% jump in latency might only move you from 20ms to 30ms. With a lower base frame rate, that same jump might move you from 100ms to 150ms. Same percentage, but the experience couldn’t be more different. Marvel Rivals is a good example of this dynamic.
However, it also exposes my concern with DLSS 4 moving forward, particularly when it comes to weaker GPUs in Nvidia’s lineup.
The flagship dilemma
Cyberpunk 2077 – DLSS 4 Gameplay
Above, you can see a video of Cyberpunk 2077 with DLSS MFG running in its 4X mode. I’m not using DLSS Super Resolution here, so I’m feeding the AI model with a base frame rate of just under 30 fps — somewhere around 27 fps if I remember correctly. This isn’t how you’d want to play Cyberpunk 2077. There’s a constant motion blur over everything, along with a ton of visual artifacts.
I’m using the RTX 5090 here at 4K, and thankfully you don’t need to settle for this experience. Flick on DLSS Super Resolution to increase your base frame rate, and you’re off to the races with a smooth experience free of visual artifacts.
But we can’t all buy an RTX 5090, can we?
Something that’s important to remember about DLSS is that it’s at its best when it’s pushing the next level of visual quality; it’s at its worst when it’s making up for hardware that can’t hit the mark. DLSS Super Resolution looks and performs best at 4K. At 1080p, the performance gains are smaller and the visual quality is worse. DLSS Frame Generation is spectacular if you’re trying to climb into the triple digits when you already have a playable base frame rate. It falls apart with visual artifacts and unmanageable latency if you don’t walk in the door with that playable frame rate. The same problems are here with MFG, and they’re magnified.
Eventually, Nvidia will move onto RTX 50-series GPUs lower in its product stack. It hasn’t officially revealed its budget offerings, but I’d be shocked if we didn’t see an RTX 5060 at some point. It’s sure to be a popular GPU, likely due in no small part to DLSS 4. But will the GPU itself be powerful enough to capitalize on DLSS 4? Will MFG even be an option for players who can’t get to that 60 fps mark in demanding games?

The idea brings me back to the Surface Laptop Studio 2. When the laptop was announced with an RTX 4060, I wrote about how Nvidia is enabling a new tier of gaming experiences on hardware that otherwise wouldn’t be suited for prestige titles like Cyberpunk 2077. You may get some visual artifacts, and you may not get perfect upscaling. But it’s at least possible to play these games thanks to Nvidia’s dedication to shortcuts on the rendering pipeline.
That dynamic is thrown off when looking at MFG. It can provide what looks like a high frame rate, but without enough power to back that up, it falls apart. The video above is a clear example of that. My concern is that the bottom of DLSS 4 will fall out from under it when weaker hardware is brought into the mix. You can compromise on upscaling; you can even compromise on frame generation in titles that aren’t latency-sensitive. Here, with MFG, it’s hard to accept the compromises if you can’t feed the AI with at least 60 fps.
This isn’t a critique of Nvidia. I don’t believe a $300 graphics card — or however much the RTX 5060 ends up being — should match the experience of a $2,000 graphics card like the RTX 5090. However, it is an important note. It’s easy to look at the benchmarks and dream up what DLSS 4 could do for budget GPUs, but I’m holding my breath until those GPUs are here to see if they’re powerful enough to even take advantage of the feature.
That’s something that will need to be settled once those GPUs are here, though. For now, DLSS 4 is very impressive. If you feed it with at least 60 fps, it feels like wizardry. Add on top of that a new transformer model that promises even larger image quality improvements over time, and it’s clear that Nvidia wants DLSS to remain at the forefront of PC gaming tech.

We’re trimming a 2025 top gainer, taking profits on market move into health stocks
We are selling 75 shares of GE Healthcare at roughly $90 each. Following Monday’s trade, Jim Cramer’s Charitable Trust will own 900 shares of GEHC, decreasing its weighting to about 2.25% from 2.42%. We’re taking advantage of the market’s rotation into health-care stocks by locking in profits in GE Healthcare. Following an up-and-down 2024, GE Healthcare shares have gotten off to a strong 2025. It was a top-performing stock in Jim’s Charitable Trust year to date with a gain of roughly 14%. We last added to our GEHC position back in late November and upgraded our rating to a 1 after shares dropped to the low $80s due to a collection of fears that ranged from rising interest rates, health-care disruption under the then-upcoming Trump administration, and lack of stimulus in China. Back then, we looked past the noise — opting to focus on the fundamentals outlined in the company’s 2024 investor day presentation. What we saw at the time was an inexpensive stock down significantly from its $93-per-share high but growing its earnings per share (EPS) in the high single-digit to low double-digit percentage range. We also thought that shares at that level de-risked the potential of more bad news out of China. GEHC 1Y mountain GE Healthcare 1 year After listening to management’s presentation at this year’s JPMorgan Healthcare Conference, we thought they sounded more optimistic about China than a few months ago and that could be a reason why the stock has rallied over the past few weeks. However, we still expect management to guide 2025 cautiously — so that they can beat and raise throughout the year. With the stock trading near $90 on Monday, we don’t think the risk/reward is as good as our low $80 upgrade. Therefore we are taking off some stock and moving our rating to a 2, meaning we would look to buy more shares on a pullback. We now know just a bit more about Gears of War: E-Day. Developer People Can Fly just revealed that it is co-developing the game alongside The Coalition. The studio previously worked as a partner on Gears of War 1-3 and as lead developer of Gears of War: Judgement.
People Can Fly wrote in its blog post, “We are honored to return to the world of Gears of War, a franchise deeply embedded in our studio’s history. As lead developer of the iconic Gears of War: Judgment and co-development partner on Gears of War 1-3, we have always been passionate about the series and its legacy.”

Mike Crump, head of The Coalition, added a few more bites of information. “Gears of War: E-Day is not just our next major game; it’s a return to what makes Gears of War games special and authentic. We’re pleased to be partnering with the talented folks at People Can Fly who have been a part of our franchise’s legacy for so long.”

The two studios didn’t give much more information about the game itself, but you can check out the official announcement trailer at the top of the page. Guillaume Barry, Development Director at PCF, said “While we can’t share more just yet, we’re eager for the day when we can show all the exciting things we’ve been working on.”
The game will take place on E-Day, when the Locust Horde — the antagonists of the franchise — first emerged from beneath the planet’s crust and laid waste to a quarter of the human population.
Players will once again take the role of Marcus Fenix in this origin story. You’ll fight alongside favorite characters like Dom Santiago in a frantic battle for survival as the Locust emerge all over the world for the first time.
No release date or window has been given, but since it’s a first-party release, Gears of War: E-Day will be available on day one on Xbox Game Pass. People Can Fly and the Coalition have proven themselves a force to be reckoned with in previous games, and we can only hope that E-Day lives up to the same level of quality.

Apple preps smart glasses with visionOS and a Meta Ray-Ban rival
It’s no secret that Apple’s entry into the AR/VR segment didn’t quite stir the product revolution that the company may have expected. A cumbersome build married to a sky-high asking price for the Vision Pro headset were some of the key woes, but the company has not given up on its dreams.
On the contrary, Apple might even expand into the wearable category beyond the domains of XR itself. According to Bloomberg, the company is working on multiple ideas for smart glasses, both with advanced AR optics and those without a sophisticated display unit.
“Apple is already working on a version of visionOS — the Vision Pro’s software — that will run on glasses,” says the report, which comes courtesy of Mark Gurman’s PowerOn newsletter.
The outlet recently reported on an internal program called “Atlas” that entailed collecting feedback from employees about the market and potential for smart glasses. The idea is to chalk out the plans for what kind of features and perks Apple should ideally offer on a pair of smart glasses.

Apple’s work on smart glasses is, once again, late to the domain. Meta has already showcased its Orion AR smart glasses concept, even though it is still a few years from a market release as the company waits for the costs to come down.
Google has also confirmed that it is serious about the potential of smart glasses, with Android XR formally laying down the foundations of those plans. There are a few other players out there, such as Halliday and Even Realities, who are taking a more minimalist course for smart glasses.
It, however, seems that Apple is not merely content with the premise of XR glasses. The company has apparently paid close attention to the smash hit that was the Meta Stories smart glasses, developed in partnership with Ray-Ban.
“It’s also exploring other types of wearable products, including a rival to Meta’s Ray-Ban spectacles and even camera-equipped AirPods,” adds the Bloomberg report.
The Meta smart glasses, equipped with a pair of front-facing cameras, originally arrived as a companion device for social media sharing and serving as a companion for basic tasks like handling calls and music playback.

But in the past few months, they have steadily gained new features, including integration with the Meta AI stack that opens a whole new world of interaction and capabilities for users. The company is reportedly working on a successor that will add a screen for deeper immersion in the coming years.
Apple is no stranger to the whole premise. Just look at the Apple Intelligence stack powered by OpenAI’s GPT ecosystem and features like Visual Intelligence that uses AI to make sense of the world in the view of a person’s eyes, and camera sensors aboard a face-worn device like headsets or smart glasses.
However, it is unclear how long it is going to take for Apple to put a pair of smart glasses — with or without XR chops — on the shelves. But given the lukewarm reception it has amassed for its first XR outing with the Vision Pro headset, the company will likely take its own sweet time perfecting its smart glasses and making sure that they stand out from the competition.
