  3. 13-year-old Anderson boy charged with ******* 13-year-old Anderson boy charged with ******* Jan. 27—ANDERSON — A 13-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of ******* and armed robbery in connection with the October 2024 stabbing death of a 61-year-old Anderson man in an apparent failed robbery attempt. Joseph H. Vannote Jr. appeared in Madison Circuit Court Division 6 on Monday for an initial hearing. He is being represented by defense attorney Bryan Williams. “It’s unusual,” Prosecutor Rodney Cummings said of waiving a 13-year-old into adult court. “We had a couple of 14-year-olds charged in the past.” Cummings noted that the decision about whether to charge a child as an adult “depends on a lot of factors.” “He clearly knew what he was doing,” the prosecutor said. “He’s probably the youngest person we’ve charged with *******.” If convicted, Vannote faces a possible prison sentence of 45-65 years. Madison Circuit Court Division 2 Judge Steve Koester signed the waiver last week to charge Vannote as an adult. The waiver states that on Oct. 11 the state filed three counts of delinquency that would be ******* if committed by an adult. The waiver maintains that video footage shows Vannote and Miles leaving a gas station together Oct. 3 and heading toward Miles’ residence in the 900 block of West 12th Street. “The child initially admitted to the stabbing but lied about the circumstances surrounding what happened,” the court document states. “Eventually, the child confessed to robbing the victim and stabbing him to death in the course of the robbery.” Koester wrote that, at the time of the *******, Vannote was on probation in Illinois on a delinquency charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon if committed by an adult. Other alleged ******** acts committed by Vannote include: carrying a knife on a school bus in October 2022; aggravated battery of a classmate that month; punching another youth in September 2023, and domestic battery against his mother in November 2023. According to a probable cause affidavit related to the death of Miles filed by Detective Richard Stires, Vannote changed his story several times during the investigation. On Oct. 3, a woman contacted police to tell them that she was checking on Miles, 61, at his Anderson residence and found the front door open. She then found Miles lying on the floor. The juvenile eventually told investigators that he met Miles at a local convenience store and asked him for money. The juvenile told police he followed Miles with the intent of robbing him. After he refused to leave the residence, Vannote said, Miles hit him in the head with a cane and told him to leave. The juvenile said he went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and stabbed Miles several times in the chest and stomach. He said that after Miles hit him with the cane he decided to stab him. The juvenile said he initially believed he could just punch Miles and rob him. At first, Vannote told police that Miles told him to take off his pants; and at another point, according to Vannote, Miles asked that the boy tell his mother to come to the residence. Vannote later said that both of those statements were lies. He admitted to stealing Miles’ wallet, which was discovered on the street, and going through Miles’ pockets in search of money. When asked whether he could have avoided the situation by leaving, the juvenile said he could have avoided it, and noted, “Now I’m here, and I killed somebody,” according to the affidavit. 7. UCI & carbon monoxide rebreathing: Why are they trying to ban it? UCI & carbon monoxide rebreathing: Why are they trying to ban it? The maker of the device being used by teams admits enhancing performance could be possible, albeit easily detectable. “When you inhale carbon monoxide you reduce [the] oxygen content of blood, so all of a sudden the body [behaves] as if you are at high altitude,” says Carsten Lundby co-founder of rebreathing equipment manufacturer Detalo Health. “If you inhale it once, it’s like being exposed to high altitude for a couple of hours – this will do nothing to your performance. “If you inhale carbon monoxide four or five times a day over the ratio of a month, you will get more haemoglobin, but this would be a misuse of our device – this is not what it was intended for,” adds Lundby, who is also professor at the University of Lillehammer in Norway. “And due to real-time surveillance of each machine, we can easily identify whether our devices would be misused.” The UCI is not necessarily looking to snuff out cheating with a ban. It says it is seeking the ruling on grounds of safety, saying the practice still could be used in a “medical setting”. But Lundby and teams are confused. “At first I was happy to see the UCI taking a stance but then a bit baffled on the wording that these be allowed to be performed in a medical setting. I’m not aware of any medical settings where this has been done,” says Lundby. “Colleagues and myself have been in touch with the UCI stating that 99% of measurements are not performed in a medical environment but by medical-trained personnel. I’m sure the wording will be changed.” Source link #UCI #carbon #monoxide #rebreathing #ban Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  8. Promotion hopefuls Burnley, Leeds slog out drab draw Promotion hopefuls Burnley, Leeds slog out drab draw Promotion hopefuls Burnley and Leeds cancelled each other out in a drab goalless draw at Turf Moor, which showed the limitations of two sides hoping to make this a Premier League fixture next term. Neither side so much as had a shot on target until James Trafford palmed over Dan James’ 88th-minute effort for Leeds as Burnley recorded a fourth 0-0 draw in their past five home games, and their ninth goalless stalemate of the season. Billed as a battle of attack versus defence between Daniel Farke’s high-scoring Leeds side and Scott Parker’s defensive specialists, it was the latter that prevailed as Burnley have now gone more than 10 and a half hours since last conceding, having only let in nine goals in 29 league games all season. The draw saw Leeds edge two points clear of Sheffield United at the top of the table, while Burnley remain third, a point shy of the Blades. There had been some early encouraging signs for Leeds as Jayden Bogle and then Brenden Aaronson found space to run through the midfield, but it would not last as Burnley quickly tightened up and shut down the middle of the park. Leeds had half a penalty claim before the break when Sam Byram ran on to a diagonal ball from James and went sprawling, but referee Josh Smith was happy Anthony’s shoulder barge was fair. The half ended with neither goalkeeper having been tested, but if the first 45 minutes had been low on goal-mouth action, it somehow got worse after the break. Both sides struggled to break down the other as strong winds and relentless rain had an impact on an increasingly scrappy contest. Both managers made changes seeking a spark. Mateo Joseph and Largie Ramazani replaced Manor Solomon and Joel Piroe for Leeds, before Parker sent on Brighton loanee Jeremy Sarmiento in place of Lyle Foster. Leeds roused themselves late on, with Bogle cutting into the box, but his shot was blocked by Josh Cullen. From the resulting corner the ball came out to James, but his rising half-volley was pushed over by Trafford. It proved the only attempt on target of a disappointing match. 9. Google Maps to rename ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to ‘Gulf of America’ for US users Google Maps to rename ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to ‘Gulf of America’ for US users WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Google Maps will change the name of “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” once it is officially updated in the U.S. Geographic Names System, it said in an X post on Monday. The change will be visible in the U.S., but it will remain “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico. Outside of the two countries, users will see both names. The Trump administration’s Interior Department said on Friday it had officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and the Alaskan peak Denali to Mount McKinley. 11. The future of Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un’s curious relationship The future of Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un’s curious relationship BBC The cameras struggled to get a steady shot as Donald Trump took his first historic steps into enemy territory with Kim Jong Un. It was 2019 and the then-45th president of the United States patted the arm of the North Korean leader, then on cue, Kim led him across the threshold that separates his country from South Korea – two countries officially still at war. Behind them, within the heavily fortified Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), it was chaos as TV crews jostled to get a clear view through a line of North Korean bodyguards who seemed surprised by the onslaught of US media. At one point, a reporter asked for help and the White House press secretary had to pull them from behind a line of security to the Trump-Kim photo call. This meeting had been hastily organised – and it showed. “I never expected to meet you at this place,” said Kim to Trump. Getty Images The showman president and once-reclusive dictator: Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un met in the DMZ in 2019 The US president had organised the last-minute rendezvous on Twitter, as it was then known, just 30 hours earlier when he suggested meeting Chairman Kim at the DMZ “just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!” The impromptu invitation created a third and last incredible TV moment between a showman president and a once reclusive dictator. Now, it appears there could be more. Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity in an interview broadcast last Thursday that he will once again “reach out” to Kim. “I got along with him,” Trump added. “He is not a religious zealot. He happens to be a smart guy.” The BBC understands that there has been very little contact between the US and North Korea in the last four years during the Biden administration. Washington has sent messages but there has been no reply from Pyongyang. Getty Images Trump used to boast that the two ‘fell in love’. He said last week: ‘I’ll reach out to him again’ The last meeting between the two nations, when Trump was last in office, did not advance a longed-for deal to get North Korea to give up its prized possession – its nuclear weapons. Since then, Kim has advanced his missile programme and claims to have successfully tested a hypersonic missile, despite being subject to strict international sanctions. It’s a far cry from when Trump used to boast that the two “fell in love”. The question is, can the relationship be rekindled – or could it be a very different picture this time around? Washington will, after all, be dealing with a very different Kim now. In the last four years his alliances and fortunes have shifted – and his relationship with another world leader appears to have strengthened too. So, could it mean that this has all changed his dynamic with Trump for good? Could their relationship be rekindled? “It’s definitely a possibility,” says Jenny Town, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center and the director of Stimson’s Korea Program. “You can tell by Donald Trump’s decision to appoint a special envoy for sensitive issues that include North Korea, I think it gives you an indication of kind of where his thinking is on that right now.” Trump has brought back some of those who helped set up his summits with Kim, including the former ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell who has been picked as his presidential envoy for special missions on “some of the hottest spots” around the world, including North Korea. But there have been changes in the intervening years. Getty Images Kim is embracing a new friend – Russia’s President Vladimir Putin “North Korea will spend the first year trying to prove to Trump that Kim Jong Un isn’t who he was in 2017 – that he’s militarily stronger, that he’s politically stronger, and that, if they ever get back to that point, it’s going to be a very different negotiation,” argues Ms Town. Kim is also embracing a new friend – Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. He has helped North Korea with food and fuel in return for weapons and soldiers for his war effort in Ukraine. Pyongyang is no longer as desperate for relief from US sanctions. North Korea ‘primed’ people for Trump Rachel Minyoung Lee, who worked as a senior North Korean media analyst for the U.S. government told the BBC that Pyongyang has “primed” its people by informing them in state media about Donald Trump’s return. But she believes the “bar for entering talks will now be higher than before.” “Two things will have to happen,” she added. “North Korea is desperate enough to return to the negotiating table, for example due to a crumbling economy or a significant cooling off in its relations with Russia; or the United States makes an offer to North Korea that is drastically different from what it did in the past.” SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images Trump has previously said of the North Korean leader (pictured): ‘I was very friendly with him… We got along very well’ Trump sparked speculation that he is willing to restart talks with Kim during a recent signing ceremony in the Oval Office, when he said: “I was very friendly with him. He liked me. I liked him. We got along very well.” But the Trump administration should be realistic this time around, says Sydney Seiler who until last year was the national intelligence officer for North Korea on the U.S. National Intelligence Council. “The arms control thing is a red herring. There is no arms control to be had with North Korea. We’ve tried arms control,” he said. “Maybe North Korea will sit and talk, and maybe they’ll refrain from long range missile launches, and they’ll not conduct a seventh nuclear test, and the issue will be largely manageable. That’s the best-case scenario. “The worst-case scenario is that even if you talk, they’ll continue to launch, they’ll continue to test. So, Donald Trump would have to consider: what is the value of engaging North Korea?” Especially because they will both carry significant scars from their last meeting. Selfies, photo opps and a cancelled lunch I watched the Winter Olympics in 2018 in South Korea’s chilly Pyeongchang with an unexpected guest – sitting below my balcony seat was Kim’s sister. It was the first time a member of the Kim family had visited the South since the end of the Korean War, a visit that elicited a loud scream of surprise from my South Korean producer. Sitting near her on the stands was the U.S. Vice President Mike Pence. From what I observed, they could barely look at each other. But still it was an extraordinary step for diplomacy, and one that would have been unimaginable a few months ago. Getty Images Mike Pence sat near Kim Jong Un’s sister at the Winter Olympics When Trump took office in January 2017, he had been warned about North Korea. The last three presidents had tried and failed to pressure the state to give up its nuclear weapons after several rounds of talks and sanctions. After Donald Trump’s Inauguration, Kim fired a missile almost every month. The president took to Twitter to air his wrath threatening to rain down ‘fire and fury’ on North Korea. He dubbed Kim as “Little Rocket Man”, in return Pyongyang nicknamed Trump “Dotard”. Then came threats about pressing nuclear buttons, first from Pyongyang, then Washington. Getty Images The BBC understands that there has been very little contact between the US and North Korea in the last four years Trump wrote on Twitter that he too had a nuclear button, “but it is a much ******* & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!” After a year of acrimonious exchanges and brinkmanship that had some in Seoul wondering if they should plan for war – everything changed. The liberal South Korean president, Moon Jae-in had been hoping for an icebreaker with Pyongyang. He was born in a refugee camp after his parents fled the war in the North. He had even visited his aunt there in a rare family exchange between the two countries. When Pyongyang opened the door a crack and asked – could North Korea take part in the Winter Olympics? Seoul, led by Moon, kicked it wide open. VLADIMIR SMIRNOV/POOL/AFP via Getty Images Putin has helped North Korea with food and fuel in return for weapons and soldiers Trump arrived in Singapore for his summit with Kim promising to make history. The North Korean leader took a night-time stroll through glitzy downtown and took selfies as if he was on a night out with the boys. He’d barely travelled outside his own borders – but he was proving that he too knew how to put on a show. But even after his much-photographed handshake with Trump, this now very personal form of diplomacy produced very little in the way of concrete promises for North Korea to disarm. They both signed a vaguely worded statement to work towards denuclearisation and promised to meet again. The stakes were higher for the second Trump and Kim show in Vietnam. Photo-ops would not be enough from a US president who bragged about his deal-making prowess. We waited for hours in the humid streets of Hanoi outside the gates of the French colonial Metropole Hotel, where we were initially told the pair were having lunch. But it turned out, lunch had been cancelled. Gambles that did not pay off The BBC has spoken to three people who took part in the summit to piece together what went wrong. It seems both leaders may have overestimated the hand they had to play. Trump offered to lift U.S. sanctions on North Korea if Kim gave up all his nuclear weapons, nuclear material and nuclear facilities. The president had reportedly been warned that the North had turned this deal down in the past, but he felt his personal rapport with the North Korean leader would help him succeed. It did not. Kim gambled on Trump accepting a more modest deal. He too thought their personal relationship would allow him to prevail. He offered to dismantle his aging Yongbyon nuclear complex for an end to all US sanctions since 2016. Getty Images The deal Kim offered was not good enough for Trump. ‘Kim remains totally inflexible,’ argues one expert “Singapore had given Kim Jong Un some prestige and the belief that finally, the United States is coming to its senses and talking to me on my own terms,” says Mr Seiler. “He came to the table expecting, because he had been coached, we know, quietly, by the South Koreans who were saying, Donald Trump is politically desperate, he is no longer listening to John Bolton, he is willing to agree to a deal that puts a small part of your nuclear program on the table in return for sanctions relief.” But the president had also been briefed. He had been told that the North could still produce uranium at an enrichment centre near Pyongyang. The U.S. said it had been monitoring other sites the North thought they’d kept secret for some time. “I think that they were surprised that we knew,” Trump later said. The deal Kim offered was not nothing, but it was not good enough for the US president. “Kim Jong Un comes to the table and he had no plan B,” says Mr Seiler. “So, when Donald Trump says we’ve got to do more than this, Kim Jong Un remains totally inflexible.” Did Kim try to save the deal? The BBC understands from its sources that Kim tried to save the deal. He sent an aide to remind Washington what was on the table and that they would dismantle all of the Yongbyon plant. But Trump was already heading to the airport. “The story of Hanoi needs to be gotten right,” says Mr Seiler. “The common theme is Donald Trump walked out of the room. It was an all or nothing deal, and when Kim Jong Un wasn’t willing to put it all on the table, Donald Trump walked. That’s a very simplistic pedestrian assessment of what transpired at Hanoi.” As Trump flew back to Washington, the North Koreans took the unprecedented step of holding a press conference. Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters that this opportunity may never come again. It hasn’t as yet – and Kim may think twice about taking part in talks again. “There definitely was an opportunity there,” says Jenny Town. “Kim Jong Un had actually built-up domestic expectation in North Korea that they were on the verge of a breakthrough, and that it was going to bring benefits.” “If we could have taken advantage of that moment, we could have been on a very different track. Were you going to get denuclearisation easily? Absolutely not. But would we be in a very different place in terms of tensions on the Korean Peninsula and how far North Korea has gone in its nuclear development, maybe. We’ll never know, obviously, but there was definitely a will there that doesn’t exist now.” Donald Trump’s unorthodox diplomacy reduced tensions for a while, but it did not stop the expansion of Pyongyang’s weapons programme. His 20 steps into North Korean territory may also have legitimised a regime with one of the worst human rights records on the planet. But after three meetings and there appeared to be a connection between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un that offered some hope that one day there would be peace on the Korean Peninsula. Tulsi Gabbard Pictured at Altar Dedicated to Her Wacky Anti-Gay Guru Tulsi Gabbard Pictured at Altar Dedicated to Her Wacky Anti-Gay Guru This is Tulsi Gabbard placing flowers at an altar dedicated to her “guru”—a man whose group she denies ever being part of. The photograph of President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be director of national intelligence shows how a teenage Gabbard took part in a ritual dedicated to Chris Butler, the leader of the Science of Identity Foundation, while she was a student at one of its boarding schools. It was obtained by the Daily Beast along with an image from the program for her second marriage, in 2015, which includes a special blessing from Butler, under the name he uses, Siddhaswarupananda. Both images shed further light on Gabbard’s connections to the Science of Identity Foundation. On Monday The New York Times quoted Gabbard’s spokeswoman as saying “she has never and doesn’t have affiliation” with the group. This is Tulsi Gabbard placing an offering at an altar dedicated to Chris Butler, the leader of the Science of Identity Foundation movement in which she was brought up. / Obtained by The Daily Beast Gabbard will face a Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday, when the Intelligence Committee will consider whether she should have unfettered access to America’s most closely guarded secrets. But Republican senators are not united behind her and have voiced doubts about her views and even whether she understands the role she has been selected for. John Cornyn, of Texas, who has expressed support for her, said Monday, “I think the jury’s still out.” The importance of Butler and his Science of Identity Foundation—which is an offshoot of the Hare Krishna movement, itself an offshoot of Hinduism—to Gabbard had gone under the radar for years. Butler is a man followers call a living god but who is also accused of running a “cult” by former followers. Gabbard called Butler her “guru” in 2015. Gabbard was around 15 when the photograph of her at Butler’s altar, the first visual evidence of her participation in the group, was taken in the Philippines. Her parents, both deeply enmeshed in Butler’s movement, had sent her to one of the group’s boarding schools there. Her office declined to comment on the photo to the Daily Beast. The Daily Beast revealed earlier this month how Butler had ranted anti-gay hate on a tape from the late 1990s, shortly before Gabbard first ran for state office in Hawaii on an anti-gay marriage platform. She has previously said that her views on same-sex couples’ rights have “evolved” and voted to overturn a constitutional ban on gay marriage while in Congress. When the Daily Beast asked for comment on Butler ranting about gay people being “deviants” and comparing homosexuality to ************, Trump’s transition team said reporting on Gabbard and Butler was “Hinduphobic.” Meanwhile Butler’s group hired a crisis PR firm and pointed the Beast to a long “open letter” complaining about “media attacks that perpetuate harmful Hinduphobic narratives and rhetoric.” An SIF spokesperson said, “We will not engage with sensationalist narratives driven by political motives, rather than fair reporting.” But a former member of the SIF, Anti van Duyn, has written to members of Congress to express concerns about it. She told The New York Times that it warned Gabbard is “under the complete influence of” Butler, and alleges that he “harbors ambitious political goals,” although she did not claim to know them. The SIF group is not part of mainstream Hinduism, and multiple former members told the Daily Beast that they believed it to be a cult—something Butler and his followers have long disputed. Some requested anonymity because they feared retribution by the group for speaking out. This was the special blessing in Gabbard’s wedding program for her second marriage in 2015. She says she has They told the Beast that Butler exerted almost “complete control” over his followers, who had to treat him as god on earth. Butler took the name Jagad Guru Siddhaswarupananda Paramahamsa. He is addressed as Jagad Guru, which translates as “world teacher” and carries the meaning that he has the last word on everything. The former followers said the group had little to do with Hinduism, accusing it of being focused entirely on Butler. Notably in the 1990s it hosted Christmas celebrations “in honor of the appearance of Jesus Christ.” Butler, born in 1948 in New Orleans, was brought up in Hawaii where he now lives as a virtual hermit. He leads as many as 10,000 followers, according to estimates by former members, from his compound in Kailua. Those former SIF members painted a picture of a controlling “cult of personality” in which, they said: Every day began at 5 a.m. where followers prayed to an altar with Butler’s image, then made offerings of food and flowers to the “guru,” like in the photo of Gabbard. Children were made to listen to his “insane” lectures as he swore and used homophobic slurs. Butler lived in an aluminum foil-wrapped room in his Hawaii compound because he believed it would shield him from infectious diseases, which he was “paranoid” about contracting. He divided his followers into “As, Bs and Cs” to determine who was allowed near him—and only those who “quarantined” for two weeks could approach him. Followers working for free in his home and kitchen had to follow dozens of rules, including that they paid “obeisance” as soon as entering the house. Butler’s control extended from childhood into adulthood, determining who people could marry and where they could work. Those who left were ostracized so completely that one man said he was not even told about his father’s death. The Science of Identity Foundation emerged in the late 1970s when Butler split from the Hare Krishna Consciousness Movement after the death in 1977 of its leader Srila Prabhupada. Both Gabbard’s parents went on to become key parts of the movement. Like many initial followers of Butler, Gabbard’s father Mike had been involved in the Hare Krishna movement, a letter seen by the Daily Beast confirms. In the 1980s, Mike Gabbard became the unpaid personal secretary to Butler and took on the name Krishna-katha das, according to documents reviewed by the Daily Beast. Meanwhile, her mother Carol took the name Davahuti Dasi and worked on the group’s finances. Among his tasks were seeking masseurs for Butler, who at the time was also going by the name Srila Prabhupada. This was how Mike Gabbard, Tulsi’s father, sought a masseuse for Butler, who at point was using the name Srila Prabhupada. / Obtained by The Daily Beast Rama Renson, a former member who was an almost exact contemporary of Gabbard, accused the Science of Identity Foundation of being a “cult.” “It’s very controlling, very much like it creates this very limited belief system and perception and control,” he said. “Chris Butler has a way of ********** people’s fear and their belief system. They believe everything about him. It’s a cult of personality.” Renson was born in New Zealand to parents who were followers of Butler. They then moved to Hawaii to be closer to the guru. “He’s the pure holy, the literally only living representative of God and he’s right about everything,” he told the Beast. “If you go against him it’s the worst sin and you’ll be the equivalent of burning in Hell, tortured for eternities.” Worship of Butler began at the family altar in followers’ homes at 5 a.m., with a prayer to the Jagad Guru. One follower said it was still etched in their memory and recited, “The lotus feet of my spiritual master are the only way by which we can attain pure devotional service. I bow at your lotus feet with great awe and reverence; by your grace one can cross the ocean of suffering and attain the mercy of Krishna. My only wish is to have my consciousness purified by the words emanating from your lotus mouth. Attachment to your lotus feet is the perfection that fulfills all desires. You are my lord, birth after birth.” Butler is a largely reclusive figure who preaches to his followers from his compound on Hawaii where, former followers say, he uses aluminum foil to prevent infection. / Science of Identity Foundation Butler was on a spiritual quest as a young man which brought him into contact with the Hare Krishna movement. But when he started his own group, he moved into a Hawaii compound where, witnesses said, he lived in an aluminum foil-lined room because of his paranoia about infectious diseases. Those who sought to come close to him would have to “quarantine” for as long as two weeks before being permitted into his home, the Beast was told. As the new head of his own sect, Butler adopted Srila Prabhupada’s tradition of being waited on by his followers, but added his own rules. Among the most bizarre was dividing his followers into “As, Bs or Cs” to determine whether they were allowed to approach him. Butler’s personal servants were called “As,” working closely to him in the kitchen and preparing meals, massages, which meant they were not allowed to go into stores and had to remain 10 to 20 feet away from public places. “Normal people” who could go into stores were called “Cs,” and they would do most of the shopping and supplying, a former follower said. Only a few rare people were awarded status as a ”B,” such as Butler’s wife Wai Lana. They had to put clean clothing on when they went to work in the kitchen, and all furniture and cars used for transportation needed to be covered. A former follower who spent time working in the kitchen said that all food and supplies brought into the center for Butler needed to be sanitized. A document seen by the Beast shows five pages of rules for workers, with the first rule saying, “Pay obeisances when entering the SPV home.” These were just some of the hundreds of rules which followers who came to Butler’s home to tend to him had to follow. / Obtained by Daily Beast “We had to first sanitize them outside with alcohol. Vegetables and (produce) were soaked in an acid water solution,” the former kitchen worker explained. “Basically, my entire job was dish sterilization. I wasn’t even a cook. They basically needed an entire 12-hour shift dedicated to this sterilization.” Butler’s living space, dishes, and personal effects also needed to be sterilized. “They bought this machine from Japan that sterilized,” the former follower added. “All of his dishes had to be safe in the oven for an hour at 350 or higher degrees, or sanitized in acid water with alcohol.” Obeisance to Butler covered the whole of the followers’ lives, one former member said, particularly when it came to education. “From the late ’80s all of us kids were removed from public schools because he didn’t want them influencing our minds away from our service to him,” one former member wrote in testimony shared with the Beast. “So from that point we were home schooled, until there were schools established in the Philippines. After that all the children were sent to the boarding schools there for intensive schooling.” Gabbard’s parents first home-schooled her then sent her to one of the Philippines schools, which were segregated by sex. Tulsi Gabbard has been meeting, and meeting, and meeting with senators. / Alex Wong / Alex Wong/Getty Images One former member, a male contemporary of Gabbard’s at the schools said they were designed to implant devotion, discipline, indoctrination of Butler’s beliefs and needs. The school had about “30 to 50 boys” in each level from the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia. Keeping the students segregated by sex kept their minds off sex and they were “brainwashed” to view the opposite sex as entirely different species, the ex-follower alleged, and said that by the time he came of high school age, he was “traumatized.” “When I came back, I was all freaked out and scared of girls. It took me a couple years to kind of get over that stigma, but I was very socially awkward,” they said. “I left there in ’97, ’98, then they closed the school down for a couple years after that,” he said. Former followers accuse Butler of retaining control over followers far into their adult lives, including deciding who they could marry and where they could work, while people who left the movement were ostracized from their families. Gabbard’s first husband Eduardo Tamayo was also brought up in the SIF. Fear of retaliation from Butler’s associates and estrangement from family is another way Butler traps many followers under his control, former followers alleged. “Butler was God’s voice on earth, and if you questioned him or offended him in any way, you were effectively offending God,” wrote a former Butler follower named “Lalita” in a 2017 essay, who is known among Butler former followers. She explained, “Because we believed in reincarnation, that meant that you would be reborn as the lowest life-form imaginable and then have to spend eons working your way back into God’s good graces.” Questioning Butler is spiritual suicide, she wrote, “which was seen as worse than death.” Source link #Tulsi #Gabbard #Pictured #Altar #Dedicated #Wacky #AntiGay #Guru Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  20. iOS 18.3 is here with a major change to how you enable Apple Intelligence iOS 18.3 is here with a major change to how you enable Apple Intelligence iOS 18.3 is out now for all users, alongside a few other Apple software updates. For the first time, this update enables Apple Intelligence by default. This update rolls out a fix for Notification Summaries and improvements to Visual Intelligence. After a few weeks of developer and public betas, Apple finally released iOS 18.3 to the public today – meaning that if you have an iPhone capable of running the software, you can install it as an over-the-air update right now. It also delivers two significant improvements to Apple Intelligence and turns on the suite of features by default. Still, in the world of Apple Software Updates, iOS 18.3 stands as a smaller one that does more work under the hood rather than providing flashy new features. Apple also released several updates for its other devices: iPadOS 18.3, macOS Sequoia 15.3, and watchOS 11.3. Updates for the Apple Vision Pro, the HomePod and HomePod mini, and the Apple TV 4K also dropped, so now is a good time to check for updates. The big change, though, with Apple’s most recent software updates is that Apple Intelligence is being enabled by default. So, if you don’t want the ChatGPT integration for Siri, Image Playground, custom emojis, writing tools, or notification summaries, in that case, you’ll need to navigate to Settings and turn off the suite of features. (Image credit: Future) Leading the feature pack with iOS 18.3 are new tricks for Visual Intelligence. Initially teased in September 2024 when Apple first unveiled the iPhone 16 lineup, the Camera Control could do a bit more beyond taking photos, including letting you take a picture of anything and either search for it on Google or ask ChatGPT for help. Now, with iOS 18.3, Visual Intelligence can help you identify a **** – it worked well with my mini Bernedoodle, Rosie – and different types of plants. Further, if you scan a poster or something with a date on it, you can export that right to your calendar to create a new event. It certainly makes Visual Intelligence more useful. Considering it’s similar to Google Lens and other apps, including ChatGPT’s iOS app, which has become more multi-modal, Apple is certainly looking to improve the experience continuously. It’s also building out Apple Intelligence features; remember, these are all still in beta. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. The other Apple Intelligence feature that’s getting an update here is Notification Summaries, and this is the fix or solution that the tech giant promised after the feature caused a few very public issues. You might recall that BBC News called out the feature for summarizing a story about the accused killer of United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson quite incorrectly. (Image credit: Future / Apple) With iOS 18.3, Notification Summaries for ‘News and Entertainment’ apps are off by default, and you can turn the functionality on or off per app. Turning the feature off for news entirely shows that Apple is making some more tweaks under the hood and will likely reenable this when it feels the feature is ready for prime time. All other apps with notification summaries turned on will be presented in italics to let you know they are being generated through Apple Intelligence. And if you’ve already been running iOS 18.1 or iOS 18.2, iOS 18.3 will automatically enable Apple Intelligence on your device, assuming it can run it. You can still go into Settings to turn it off, but this is the first time it is being enabled by default, and the same switch-on occurs with macOS Sequoia 15.3 and iPadOS 18.3. As with most other Apple software updates, iOS 18.3 also includes bug fixes and security updates, so it’s always advisable to keep your iPhone and other Apple devices up to date. 21. Trudeau to appoint new senators before successor is chosen – National Trudeau to appoint new senators before successor is chosen – National Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will appoint a final group of senators to fill vacancies in the upper chamber before he resigns, his office confirmed to Global News on Monday. Parliament is currently prorogued until March 24 while the Liberals choose a new leader to succeed Trudeau, meaning the Senate and the House of Commons are not sitting and legislative business is on hold. That doesn’t prevent the appointment of new senators, however, and the Prime Minister’s Office says the selection process is underway. “The prorogation of Parliament does not affect the ability of the Governor General to appoint persons to the Senate on the advice of the Prime Minister,” the PMO said in a statement. “The Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments has provided or will provide the Prime Minister with a non-binding selection of candidates to consider for each seat to be filled. The Prime Minister takes his responsibility to appoint senators seriously and is committed to doing so for as long as he remains in office.” Story continues below advertisement 1:00 Trudeau says he will not run for re-election Radio-Canada first reported on the prime minister’s plans. The additional senators to be appointed by Trudeau will further solidify his mark on the Senate, which is already substantial. All but 21 of the 97 currently sitting senators in the 105-seat chamber are Trudeau appointees. Just 12 senators are affiliated with the Conservative Party. The number of vacancies is expected to rise to 10 by February due to retirements. Since becoming prime minister in 2015, Trudeau has appointed several Liberal donors, organizers and former MPs to the Senate, as well as former candidates for the party. Most of Trudeau’s appointees sit in Senate caucuses that identify as independent, but have historically voted to advance his legislative priorities — though often with proposed changes. Story continues below advertisement 3:23 Poll suggests Canadians unlikely to re-elect Liberals in next election Trending Now Survey says more young Canadians believe the history of the Holocaust is exaggerated Tariff uncertainty hangs over Bank of Canada’s 1st rate decision of 2025 Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Monday accused Trudeau, who he called a “lame-duck” prime minister, of seeking to “stack the Senate with his personal friends and Liberal insiders” before he leaves. “No new appointments should happen until Canadians decide who gets to run the country in a general election,” Poilievre wrote on social media. The Liberals are set to choose a new leader on March 9, and the winner of the leadership race will automatically become prime minister. Opposition parties, however, have promised to introduce non-confidence motions as soon as Parliament returns on March 24, making a spring election increasingly likely. The Conservatives have enjoyed a growing double-digit lead in the polls for several months, and could form government in the next election. Story continues below advertisement A Senate increasingly controlled by Trudeau-appointed members could mean additional scrutiny and even delays for a Conservative government’s legislative agenda. Sen. Don Plett, the Conservative opposition leader in the upper chamber, appeared to call on Liberal leadership candidates to “push back” on Trudeau’s appointment plans in a social media post Monday. “Trudeau has lost the legitimacy of appointing Senators since announcing his resignation; to appoint Senators at this point would be an act of desperation,” he wrote. —with files from Global’s Jillian Piper More on Politics More videos &copy 2025 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. 24. LA producer accused of killing model and architect says he’s not a ‘monster’ as court hears disturbing evidence LA producer accused of killing model and architect says he’s not a ‘monster’ as court hears disturbing evidence A Hollywood producer accused in the 2021 overdose deaths of a model and an architect claimed the women were “still breathing” when he dropped their bodies off at area hospitals, and insisted he is not a “f**king monster” as disturbing evidence continues to play out in court. Pearce, 43, who has pleaded not guilty to killing Christy Giles, 24, and her friend Hilda Cabrales-Arzola, 26, two women he partied with on November 13, 2021, appeared in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on Friday for day 13 of his double ******* trial. A jury heard a recording of a police interview in which Pearce told detectives at the time that he was only trying to help. “I didn’t think they were dead,” Pearce told the LAPD detective. “I thought they were breathing, that’s why I brought them to the hospital. I’m not some f**king monster.” Prosecutors say Pearce and his actor friend Brandt Osborn, partied with the women and gave them a fatal ********* of drugs – which included ********, fentanyl, ketamine, heroin, MDMA, and the date ***** drug GBH – before dumping their bodies outside two separate LA hospitals. Marcela “Hilda” Cabrales-Arzola, 26, poses with David Pearce, then 37, at an after-hours warehouse party in downtown LA on November 13. He’s on trial for giving two women a fatal ********* of drugs (Instagram) Giles was pronounced dead at the scene. Cabrales-Arzola was put on life support and suffered from multiple organ failure. She was taken off life support the day before her 27th birthday. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner determined their deaths to be drug-induced homicides. In the police interview played for the court, Pearce denied giving drugs to the two women he had met hours earlier at a party before bringing them back to his apartment. The two women had visited an art exhibit at Soho House in West Hollywood before going to a warehouse party in East Los Angeles where they met Pearce and his friends. Pearce claimed that he didn’t even have any drugs at his apartment and that he wasn’t into “buying drugs and doing drugs,” adding “I come from a good family. My parents raised me well.” “I feel horrible that two girls died,” he went on to say in the interview. “They were active drug users and I didn’t give them any drugs. I knew they were at a rave. I was told that there was a very bad batch of fentanyl going around in the USC area. I don’t do that stuff. It’s scary. It’s f**king scary.” Detective Jonathan Vander Lee told the court on Friday that at the time of the recorded interview, it had not been disclosed that fentanyl was a factor in the women’s deaths. He added that police were not even aware that fentanyl was a factor in their deaths until the following April. Christy Giles was left outside a Los Angeles hospital after suffering a drug overdose (Instagram/Christy Giles) Lee testified that when Pearce’s Prius was searched, detectives found his passport and a bag with $30,250 in cash. He said they also found “trophies” belonging to Pearce from ‘Granite ***** Films,’ a porn company, and a face mask similar to one prosecutors say was worn by Pearce when he dumped the bodies, Daily Mail reported. The detective’s testimony comes after the court saw security camera footage of Pearce carrying the women’s bodies out of his apartment on the night of November 14, 2021. Pearce first dumped Giles at Southern California Hospital in Culver City and when he returned to his apartment, he saw that Cabrales-Arzola was “progressively getting worse” but that “she was breathing and making noise so she wasn’t dead.” He then drove her limp body to Kaiser Permanente hospital in West LA and told the detective, “Hilda was alive at the hospital.” The detective informed him she was in fact dead, but that doctors revived her and she remained in ICU until she died weeks later. Pearce was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and then charged in July 2022 with two counts of ******* and two counts in the *****, transport and furnishing of a controlled substance. Cabrales-Arzola was taken off life support the day before her 27th birthday (GoFundMe) Brandt Osborn, who was also captured on surveillance camera footage leaving the warehouse rave with both women, was also arrested in the case. He was charged with two counts of accessory after the fact. Another friend, Michael Ansbach, 50, alleges Pearce gave him and the two women alcoholic drinks and ******** laced with fentanyl, according to prosecutors. He was initially accused of being an accessory to manslaughter but was not charged in the case. Prosecutor Catherine Ann Mariano said that while the women had consumed alcohol and drugs before going to Pearce’s apartment, she alleged that the drugs Pearce gave them were what “ultimately killed them.” Pearce, who continues to claim he is innocent of any wrongdoing, is also facing seven ***** charges for ******* assaults in unrelated cases that allegedly happened between 2005 and 2021. He is accused of two counts of forcible ***** and one count each of ***** of an unconscious or asleep person and ******* penetration by a foreign object, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. 25. DeepSeek’s AI model to benefit European chip stocks counter intuitively: JPMorgan DeepSeek’s AI model to benefit European chip stocks counter intuitively: JPMorgan European chip stocks are likely to benefit from the widespread growth of DeepSeek, a new economical yet cutting-edge artificial intelligence model developed in China, according to analysts. ******** AI developments contributed to the rude awakening for Big Tech stocks this week. Shares of chip designer Nvidia , a huge beneficiary of the AI hype , were down 13% on ******* stock exchanges on Monday. Microsoft , Amazon and Google , three large cloud computing providers, were also lower by about 4%. Investors are concerned that DeepSeek’s ******** AI model was developed in just two months at a cost of under $6 million — a much smaller expense than the amount generally called for by Western counterparts. However, equity analysts at JPMorgan said that not all chip stocks are alike. European semiconductor companies, such as ASML , are suppliers to chip makers TSMC , Samsung and Global Foundries , and profit from manufacturing volume growth rather than higher value sales of a small number of AI chips. The analyst suggested if DeepSeek was deployed on laptops and smartphone devices, it could drive up growth in chip volumes, benefiting ASML , ASMI and VAT Group. All three stocks are also traded in the U.S. “The data centre driven AI growth has not resulted in the volume growth in semiconductors that drives a big semiconductor cycle,” said JPMorgan’s Sandeep Deshpande and Anchal Sahu in a note to clients on Jan. 27. “Thus actually, counter intuitively, if DeepSeek’s AI assistant that can run on low compute power notebooks and possibly smartphones takes off and takes AI to the consumer market, that would be a significantly positive scenario for semiconductor equipment, even if that is accompanied by a slowdown in the growth of enterprise AI chips.” There’s evidence that consumers are already being drawn to DeepSeek in large numbers. The AI Assistant app has overtaken rival ChatGPT to become the top-rated free application available on Apple’s App Store in the U.S., according to app data research firm Sensor Tower. “If the stock decline for European semi cap companies continues, we think it is likely to create bargains for investors not involved,” the analysts added.
