Scientists find remarkable potential of method to reduce risk of diseases like ******* and diabetes: ‘Instead of medication’
A tree a day keeps the doctor away.
Every year, tens of millions of people die from noncommunicable diseases, including *******, heart disease, and diabetes. But several studies have found one way to effectively reduce that number: nature.
According to Wired, “A number of recent population-level studies in cities across the globe indicate that people who live in greener areas not only present a lower rate of NCDs but also have significantly better physical and mental health.”
A bustling cityscape just doesn’t have the same effect on our brains and bodies as forests, beaches, and fields. Not to mention the physical effects of living in a city, such as exposure to higher levels of air pollution, which increases the risk for respiratory illnesses, including asthma and lung *******.
You don’t have to live in the countryside for these mental and physical benefits. Several studies show that a quick walk in the woods can reduce stress levels, boost the immune system, lower the risk of certain diseases, and increase happiness. Even looking at a plant, such as on your desk at work, can provide the same benefits.
Spending time outside is so good for you that some doctors prescribe it. Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing,” was extensively researched in the 1980s. Now, “instead of medication, patients with certain NCDs are prescribed spending time sitting in forests,” per Wired.
Watch now: How easy is it really to charge an EV?
Unfortunately, nature’s benefits aren’t always easy to come by. Over half the world’s population lives in cities, and that number is expected to rise to 70% by 2050, per World Bank Group.
These urban areas are notoriously lacking in accessible nature, and with the average American spending 90% of their time indoors, the need for nature has never been stronger.
If you’re feeling stressed, tired, or a little under the weather, try spending some time outdoors. Go for a walk, ride a bike around town, or start a garden — it just might make things better.

NZ’s ‘sacred’ mountain granted personhood under new law
NZ’s ‘sacred’ mountain granted personhood under new law
A mountain in New Zealand considered an ancestor by Indigenous people has been recognised as a legal person after a new law granted it all the rights and responsibilities of a human being.
Mount Taranaki – now known as Taranaki Maunga, its Māori name – is the latest natural feature to be granted personhood in NZ, which has ruled that a river and a stretch of sacred land are people before.
The pristine, snow-capped dormant volcano is the second highest on New Zealand’s North Island at 2518m and a popular spot for tourism, hiking and snow sports.
The legal recognition acknowledges the mountain’s theft from the Māori of the Taranaki region after NZ was colonised. It fulfills an agreement of redress from the country’s government to Indigenous people for harms perpetrated against the land since.
How can a mountain be a person?
The law passed on Thursday gives Taranaki Maunga all the rights, powers, duties, responsibilities and liabilities of a person. Its legal personality has a name: Te Kāhui Tupua, which the law views as “a living and indivisible whole.” It includes Taranaki and its surrounding peaks and land, “incorporating all their physical and metaphysical elements.”
A newly created entity will be “the face and voice” of the mountain, the law says, with four members from local Māori iwi, or tribes, and four members appointed by NZ’s Conservation Minister.
Why is this mountain special?
“The mountain has long been an honoured ancestor, a source of physical, cultural and spiritual sustenance and a final resting place,” Paul Goldsmith, the minister responsible for the settlements between the government and Māori tribes, told parliament.
But colonisers of New Zealand in the 18th and 19th centuries took first the name of Taranaki and then the mountain itself. In 1770, the British explorer Captain James Cook spotted the peak from his ship and named it Mount Egmont.
In 1840, Māori tribes and representatives of the British crown signed the Treaty of Waitangi – NZ’s founding document – in which the Crown promised Māori would retain rights to their land and resources. But the Māori and English versions of the treaty differed – and Crown breaches of both began immediately.
In 1865, a vast swathe of Taranaki land, including the mountain, was confiscated to punish Māori for rebeling against the Crown. Over the next century hunting and sports groups had a say in the mountain’s management but Māori did not.
“Traditional Māori practices associated with the mountain were banned while tourism was promoted,” Goldsmith said. But a Māori protest movement of the 1970s and ’80s has led to a surge of recognition for the Māori language, culture and rights in NZ law.
Redress has included billions of dollars in Treaty of Waitangi settlements – such as the agreement with the eight tribes of Taranaki, signed in 2023.
Do other parts of New Zealand have personhood?
New Zealand was the first country in the world to recognise natural features as people when a law passed in 2014 granted personhood to Te Urewera, a vast native forest on the North Island. Government ownership ceased and the tribe Tūhoe became its guardian.

Powered by an X-axis linear motor, every action, whether it’s firing a weapon, accelerating in a racing game, is felt with accuracy.
AI Multi-Cooling System: Heat is a side effect of intense gaming, but the Reno13’s AI Multi-Cooling System makes sure it never becomes a problem. Google’s Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold were launched in August last year. The Pixel 9a is now expected to hit shelves soon as an affordable latecomer to the lineup. Several leaks have already surfaced, suggesting its design, camera, and battery specifications. Now, a new report reveals the launch date of the Pixel 9a. Google has unveiled its Pixel A series models at its annual Google I/O event in May in the previous years. The new leak however indicates that Pixel 9a will land earlier than usual, with pre-orders starting mid-March.
Android Headlines citing unnamed sources reports that Google will start pre-orders for Pixel 9a on March 19. The phone will reportedly ship a week later on March 26. It is said to be available in stores on the same date.
The newly rumoured launch date suggests that Google may change its pattern of launching Pixel A series phones in May. Previous models like Pixel 8a and Pixel 7a were unveiled during the Google I/O events in May.
Pixel 9a Price, Specifications (Expected)
The Pixel 9a is tipped to be priced at $499 (roughly Rs. 42,000) for the 128GB storage model in the US. On the rear, the Pixel 9a will reportedly have a dual camera unit including a 48-megapixel primary camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide Sony IMX712 sensor. It could house a 5,100mAh battery with 23W wired charging and 7.5W wireless charging support. It could come with IP68 for water resistance and dust resistance.

Witness describes seeing ‘white flare’ at moment of plane collision
An American Airlines flight carrying 60 passengers collided in mid-air with a helicopter in Washington DC. The plane crashed in the Potomac River, according to the DC Fire and EMS Department
Two local residents spoke to local media of how they found out about the incident.
One man, Jimmy Mazeo, says he noticed the plane flight patterns dispersing from their regular ones in the sky, and then saw what looked like a “white flare” in the sky.
“We thought they were shooting stars” he said, adding that he didn’t “think much of it” until he saw the emergency services arriving at the scene.

Trump signs order to plan nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, punish those who vandalize statues
Trump signs order to plan nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, punish those who vandalize statues
NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump is making plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence and create a new national sculpture garden while reviving efforts to harshly punish those who vandalize or destroy existing statues and monuments.
Trump signed an executive order Wednesday establishing a White House task force to plan what he says will be a “grand celebration worthy of the momentous occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence,” which the country will celebrate on July 4, 2026.
Trump will serve as chair of the task force, which will include a long list of senior administration officials, including cabinet secretaries.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
The order also revives Trump’s plans to build a “ National Garden of American Heroes ” with statues memorializing 250 historical figures.
Trump first announced plans for what he said would be “a new monument to the giants of our past” in a 2020 speech celebrating Independence Day at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. It was to have featured sculptures of dozens of American historical figures, including presidents, athletes and pop culture icons.
Trump himself curated the list of who was to be included — Davy Crockett, Billy Graham, Whitney Houston, Harriet Tubman and Antonin Scalia, among others.
No site was selected, however, and the garden was never funded by Congress. President Joe Biden abolished the task force after his election.
Trump’s announcement had come at a time of conservative backlash against efforts to take down statues dedicated to Confederate leaders and slave owners in the wake of George Floyd’s ******* and subsequent protests.
“The National Garden will honor American heroism after dozens of monuments to Americans, including Presidents and Founding Fathers, have toppled or destroyed and never restored,” said a White House document on the order shared with The Associated Press ahead of the signing.
Wednesday’s action also puts back into place an executive order Trump signed in 2020, and which Biden also overturned, that was aimed at protecting monuments, memorials and statues from destruction and vandalism.
Trump had signed the order during the protests over racial injustice that year after police thwarted an attempt by protesters to pull down a statue of former President Andrew Jackson in a park across from the White House.
That earlier order had called on the attorney general to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law any person or group responsible for destroying or vandalizing a monument, memorial or statue. It called for the maximum prosecution of anyone who incited violence and ******** activity, and threatened state and local law enforcement agencies with a loss if federal dollars if they failed to protect monuments.
Wednesday’s order cites “Recent examples of conduct necessitating reinstatement of this order” in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel by ****** and Israel’s subsequent invasion of Gaza, including a demonstration last June, when protesters demanding a ceasefire vandalized statues and structures around the White House with graffiti.
Plans of the expected signing were first reported by Fox News.
During his 2024 campaign, Trump had talked about creating a yearlong “Salute to America 250” celebration. He said that on his first day back in office he would convene a task force that would be responsible for coordinating with state and local governments to plan festivities, beginning this Memorial Day.
He said he wanted the plan to include a yearlong “Great American State Fair” in Iowa, featuring pavilions that would “showcase the glory of every state in the Union, promote pride in our history, and put forth innovative visions for America’s future.”
And he said he wanted to launch “Patriot Games” — sports contests featuring high school athletes from across the country that he said would “allow young Americans from every state to show off the best of American skill, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit.”

*** shoplifting on the rise and more brazen, new survey says.
*** shoplifting on the rise and more brazen, new survey says.
Cherry Wilson & Jim Connolly
BBC News Investigations
BBC
Retail crime is “out of control” and shoplifters are carrying out increasingly brazen and violent acts of theft because they do not fear any consequences, an industry body has told the BBC.
In some cases, offenders are openly clearing shelves of items in full view of customers and shop workers – a tactic sometimes known as “kamikaze” shoplifting.
In the 12 months to September last year, incidents of customer theft in the *** rose by 3.7 million to 20.4 million, and cost retailers £2bn.
The figures were published today in the annual crime survey from the British Retail Consortium (BRC), which represents more than 200 major retailers.
According to the BRC, violence and abuse against shopworkers also rose by 50%, with more than 2,000 such incidents recorded on average per day.
It says its survey was based on a sample of retailers representing over 1.1 million employees and a market turnover of more than £194m.
In one “kamikaze” incident last month at a phone store in London’s Oxford Street, two men spent minutes kicking down a phone stand in front of customers and shop workers.
It is believed the phone stand contained ****** phones which could then have been sold online to unsuspecting customers, tricked into believing they were buying the real thing.
The Metropolitan Police said officers responded to the incident and carried out a search of the area. They were unable to locate the suspects, despite the fact that they were captured on video. An investigation has since been launched.
Shoplifters target a phone shop in central London, December 2024
Shoplifting is often driven by organised gangs and prolific offenders stealing to order, according to Helen Dickinson, the BRC’s chief executive.
She said offenders were becoming more daring because “they don’t see that there’s necessarily any consequences”.
“It’s outrageous and out of control in many parts of the country.”
Social media is filled with videos of shoplifting, sometimes in front of shop workers and security officers who do not appear to step in.
Ms Dickinson said shop staff are often advised not to intervene because they run a risk of being attacked.

Shop owner Amit Puntambekar said he was punched in the face by a young woman he suspected of stealing £75 worth of vapes from his Cambridgeshire store earlier this year.
He believes the number of violent incidents has worsened over the past three years and has made him consider quitting the business, which has been in his family for nearly 40 years.
“I don’t want to die at work,” he said. “When your staff are threatened with a hammer, when someone threatens to kill you who lives near your shop and the police don’t take it seriously, what’s the point?”
Criminals know the law is soft on shoplifting, Mr Puntambekar believes, so suspects are carrying out crimes in plain sight.
Cambridgeshire Police said a 17-year-old girl has been charged with common assault and theft from a shop following the incident and will appear in court on 5 February.

Facilities management firm Mitie supplies 10,000 security guards to the *** retail sector. It said 10% of these were injured in the line of duty in 2024.
According to its security director, Jason Towse, shoplifters have become more fearless because police resources have become more focused on “high-profile” crime.
“The main issue for why people are using that ‘kamikaze’ approach is to scare colleagues and scare the staff,” he said. “They also know that the response from the police is not what it used to be.”
Security guards do not have more powers than other citizens to apprehend shoplifters. But Mr Towse says they are trained in how best to identify and respond to issues. They can also act as a visible deterrent and share data and evidence with the police.
We asked 10 major retailers what their staff policies were for dealing with shoplifters carrying out violent or aggressive theft.
Several said the safety of staff and customers was a priority, and added that they had invested in security measures including CCTV, body-worn cameras, and an increase in security guards.
Shoplifting adds £133 to the cost of an average *** household’s shopping bill each year, according to The Centre for Retail Research.
In 2023, the government launched a scheme that set out guidance for police on tackling the issue – including prioritising attending violent incidents or where an offender has been caught. It also launched an intelligence-sharing partnership between retailers, the Home Office and policing – focused on tackling shoplifting gangs and prolific offenders.
Tesco workers defend doors as shoplifters try to break in
In response to the BRC survey, Home Office Minister Dame Diana Johnson has called the rise in shop crime “utterly unacceptable”.
She has also repeated a government pledge to bring in a new specific offence for assaulting retail workers – something the retail industry has been calling for since 2020.
It would help clarify the size of the problem and allow statistics to be collected, says the BRC.
Helen Dickinson says the latest record levels of shoplifting should serve as a “wake-up call” to the government and the police.
“The fear of consequence is just not there and I think that’s why we need to see more resources and more focus by the police,” she says.
Jason Towse says there is more work to do but thinks that steps being taken across the industry are starting to bring about results.
“Ultimately when shoplifters start to see the levels of consequence more and more than we’re seeing today… that will really change the tide.”

DeepSeek’s chatbot achieves 17% accuracy, trails Western rivals in NewsGuard audit
DeepSeek’s chatbot achieves 17% accuracy, trails Western rivals in NewsGuard audit
(Reuters) – ******** AI startup DeepSeek’s chatbot achieved only 17% accuracy in delivering news and information in a NewsGuard audit that ranked it tenth out of eleven in a comparison with its Western competitors including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
The chatbot repeated false claims 30% of the time and gave vague or not useful answers 53% of the time in response to news-related prompts, resulting in an 83% fail rate, according to a report published by trustworthiness rating service NewsGuard on Wednesday.
That was worse than an average fail rate of 62% for its Western rivals and raises doubts about AI technology that DeepSeek has claimed performs on par or better than Microsoft-backed OpenAI at a fraction of the cost.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Within days of its roll-out, DeepSeek’s chatbot became the most downloaded app in Apple’s App Store, stirring concerns about United States’ lead in AI and sparking a market rout that wiped around $1 trillion off U.S. technology stocks.
The ******** startup did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
NewsGuard said it applied the same 300 prompts to DeepSeek that it had used to evaluate its Western counterparts, which included 30 prompts based on 10 false claims spreading online.
Topics for the claims included last month’s killing of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson and the downing of Azerbaijan Airlines flight 8243.
NewsGuard’s audit also showed that in three of the ten prompts, DeepSeek reiterated the ******** government’s position on the topic without being asked anything relating to China.
On prompts related to the Azerbaijan Airlines ****** — questions unrelated to China — DeepSeek responded with Beijing’s position on the topic, NewsGuard said.
“The importance of the DeepSeek breakthrough is not in answering ******** news-related question accurately, it is in the fact that it can answer any question at 1/30th of the cost of comparable AI models,” D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria said.
Like other AI models, DeepSeek was most vulnerable to repeating false claims when responding to prompts used by people seeking to use AI models to create and spread false claims, NewsGuard added.

Soul Tide is the next gacha RPG to bite the dust
Soul Tide is the next gacha RPG to bite the dust
Lemcnsun has announced that Soul Tide will be shutting down for good
Service officially ends on February 28th
One final update will be released to fans
Another gacha RPG is shutting down. Lemcnsun has just announced that Soul Tide will officially end service on February 28th, 2025. Effective immediately, downloads and in-game purchases are disabled, and all player data will be deleted after shutdown.
Soul Tide’s team cited the expiration of its licensing agreement as the main reason, but it’s hard to ignore the broader pattern. With so many choices in the genre, keeping a dedicated audience isn’t easy. Soul Tide started off well, but it also faced the same struggles as many other releases such as the usual gacha controls and the challenge of maintaining long-term engagement.
The studio isn’t just bowing out just like that as they’ve got one final update waiting for you. The last month will feature new banners, including rate-ups for Lavira, Asuna, Scarlet Lancer, and Woe. Alien Invasion Season 21 is also going live, offering one last set of challenges before the servers go dark. If you still have resources left, now’s the time to use them.
It’s becoming hard to ignore how often this is happening now. Just recently, Atelier Resleriana announced its own shutdown, and now Soul Tide follows. The market is oversaturated, and unless a game manages to stand out with strong mechanics or a dedicated player base, it risks getting lost in the shuffle.
If you’re still stuck with Soul Tide as your main game, the final update at least offers a way to wrap things up on your terms. A memorable farewell is being prepared in Continent Cresent so be sure you don’t miss out on it. Follow the X page to stay updated on Soul Tide’s final moments.
In this sea of gacha titles, do you think you can find your favourite fish? If you’re still looking for one, then here’s our list of the best gacha games to play on Android phones and tablets right now!

Ex-dancer settles with Royal Ballet School over ‘body-shaming’
Ex-dancer settles with Royal Ballet School over ‘body-shaming’
BBC
Ellen Elphick says she wants to bring attention to the harm caused by body-shaming in ballet
The Royal Ballet School (RBS) has reached a financial settlement with a former student, who said the body-shaming she experienced while at the elite institution has left her with lifelong psychological damage.
Ellen Elphick, 31, had claimed the London-based school breached its duty of care when she attended between 2009 and 2012.
The school said it accepted no liability for the former dancer’s case and has not issued an apology.
“We are pleased that both parties were able to reach a mutually acceptable agreement in this way and we wish Ellen and her family well for the future,” said an RBS spokesperson – adding that the school “continues to take the ******** of its students very seriously”.
Last year, when Ellen spoke to the BBC she described how, as a 16-year-old, just two weeks into her training, a teacher publicly humiliated her by tracing a line around her body in front of a mirror.
“If I had a knife, this is what I would cut off,” Ellen says the teacher said.
The comment plunged Ellen into shame, she says, and exacerbated her struggles with disordered eating. She later received a diagnosis of atypical anorexia and body dysmorphia
She said there was a pattern of similar comments from multiple teachers at the school, that further eroded her confidence and intensified her eating disorder.
“This settlement highlights the abuse dancers have suffered and the need for change,” said Dino Nocivelli of Leigh Day solicitors – who has been representing Ellen.
“We continue to demand a government inquiry into body-shaming in ballet.”
Johan Persson
Ellen Elphick had dreamed of getting a place at the Royal Ballet School
Ellen was among more than 50 ex-dancers who told the BBC there was a long-running “toxic” culture of body-shaming and bullying within some of the ***’s leading ballet schools.
She said she had pursued legal action to bring attention to the harm caused by body-shaming in ballet. The financial terms of her settlement have not been publicly disclosed.
“It wasn’t about the money,” she said.
“It was about making people aware of what being a ballerina is really like and showing that what happened to me was unacceptable.”
Although she says she feels some validation from the settlement, Ellen expressed disappointment at the lack of an apology from RBS. “That they couldn’t even say ‘sorry’ shows there is so much more to do,” she said.
Now a mother, she said she wanted to shield her daughter from the ballet world and would “never” send her to ballet classes.
However, she hopes her case could lead to meaningful reform and that ballet schools will prioritise students’ mental health and train teachers to understand the impact of their words.
“RBS needs to lead the way and show that health and wellbeing matter more than just dancing,” she said.
“Children should be able to go into dance and not leave it feeling damaged.”

Laybutt in centre stage for Cowboys after Holmes exit
Laybutt in centre stage for Cowboys after Holmes exit
The imminent return of PNG international Zac Laybutt from a knee injury has given North Queensland a huge boost in the centre position after the off-season move of Valentine Holmes.
Laybutt, 23, ruptured an ACL in the round-four win over Gold Coast last year and missed the rest of the season.
He is on track for a round-one return to bolster the Cowboys’ centre stocks after Queensland star Holmes’ switch to St George Illawarra.
Tom Chester, another centre candidate, tore an ACL in pre-season and will be unavailable in 2025.
Laybutt was Holmes’ centre partner in the opening four NRL games last year and looked the goods.
He scored the club’s first try of the season in the round-one win over the Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium, where his body swerve and speed caught the eye.
Cowboys general manager of football Micheal Luck said Laybutt was talented enough to play five-eighth, fullback or wing, but his impact as a centre suited the club best and was where he offered the most as an individual.
“We think at this point that centre is where he plays his best footy,” Luck told AAP.
“He has had a pretty good pre-season and looks good when he is out there doing full contact.
“We are looking forward to him putting all that into practice in the trials, and hopefully he is in good nick for round one.”
Jaxon Purdue and Viliami Vailea are also in the frame to play centre, while Luck said Maroons winger Murray Taulagi had also slotted into the position at training in the pre-season.
“We have got some guys there that can do the job, but Zac was the long-term plan to be there,” Luck said.
“We will make sure we look after his knee, and if he is not completely right for round one from a rehab perspective we won’t rush him.”
Laybutt said on Thursday he was tracking well and had the round-one clash with Manly in his sights.
He said the mental side of his recovery was tough, but he had the right support around him at the Cowboys to get through it.
“You are on top of the world when you are playing good footy and your confidence is high,” Laybutt said.
“I had to adapt on the go. It was tough. I thought I had that spot solidified, but I am sort of starting again where I was at the same time last year.
“I’ve been through it and I know now what I need to do to get back into the team.
“I hope to get some trials in and am ready to go for round one.”
