  2. Police swoop on Sky ECC cryptophone distributors in Spain and Holland Police swoop on Sky ECC cryptophone distributors in Spain and Holland Police have arrested three men and one woman over their alleged role in distributing Sky ECC encrypted phones used by organised crime groups across multiple countries. The Dutch public prosecutors’ office confirmed that the suspects were involved in the distribution of encrypted phones supplied by ********* technology company, Sky Global, to organised crime groups. Police have also seized €1.4 million in cryptocurrency and property. The suspects, who have not been named by Dutch prosecutors, are accused of running a criminal organisation and laundering the proceeds of crime by taking money from criminal organisations to supply encrypted phones. French, Belgian and Dutch police infiltrated services belonging to Sky ECC, the world’s largest cryptophone network, and decrypted millions of messages between June 2019 and March 2021, leading to the arrests of drug gangs in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Dutch police have used decrypted messages harvested from Sky ECC phones to bring hundreds of criminal cases in the Netherlands against people accused of drugs and arms trafficking, money laundering and violent crime. The owner and founder of Sky Global, which operated the encrypted Sky ECC phone service, Jean-Francios Eap, continues to run technology and a sushi businesses in Vancouver. He has denied allegations that the company knowingly supplied phones to criminal organisations. Dutch prosecutors confirmed that Spanish police arrested a 37-year-old from Amsterdam in Alicante, Spain this week. The man, part of a network of distributors and resellers used by Sky Global, was responsible for supplying Sky ECC phones to the Netherlands. Spanish police also arrested a 36-year-old from Arnhem, in Holland, on the Spanish island of Ibiza. The man, who was a shareholder and director of a “large number” of companies in the Netherlands, Cuacao, and Canada, was involved in distributing Sky ECC phones and software used by international criminals. Police in Amsterdam also arrested a 37-year-old man, described as a prime suspect in their investigation, and a 36-year old woman for allegedly profiting by distributing Sky ECC phones to criminal groups. Most secure app you can buy Sky Global, based in Vancouver, supplied encrypted phones to 70,000 users worldwide. It installed sophisticated encryption software on iPhones, Google Pixel, Blackberry and Nokia handsets, which routed encrypted text messages through servers in France and Canada. The company advertised its Sky ECC messaging service as the “most secure messaging platform you can buy”. Phones fitted with the Sky ECC app offered self-destructing messages, secure audio messages, and a secure encrypted vault. Users communicated using anonymous “handles” or aliases. The Dutch suspects are believed to have been responsible for the distribution and management of about a quarter of the Sky ECC subscriptions worldwide, equivalent to €13.8 million in revenue and €6.8 million in profits. They maintained contact with resellers and agents, who sold the crypto phones to clients that paid €600 for a three month subscription. The distributors are believed to have placed a large part of their profits in crypto wallets and invested in real estate, including a holiday park. French indictment A number of those arrested this week, are listed among 30 Sky ECC distributors and resellers named in a French indictment. The only person involved in the distribution of Sky ECC phones in French custody, is ********* businessman, Thomas Herdman who has been held for over 42 months without trial. Herdman, who worked for ********* Sky ECC distributor LevUp, was arrested by Spanish police in June 2021 despite agreeing to cooperate with US law enforcement officials investigating Sky ECC as part of a “proffer agreement”. LevUp claimed to be the smallest of four major distributors that operated for Sky Global, accounting for only 4% of its market share. The ********* businessman is charged in France with 22 offences, which he denies, including laundering the proceeds from the importation of drugs by organised crime as a result of distributing Sky ECC encrypted phones, and the lesser charge of supplying cryptographic equipment without properly declaring it. A grand jury in the Southern District of California originally indicted Herdman and Sky Global’s Eap in March 2021. The indictment accuses the executives of racketeering and knowingly facilitating the import and distribution of ******** drugs through the ***** of encrypted communications devices. In Holland, the investigation into Sky ECC cryptophone distributors is being conducted by the Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD), which investigates financial crimes, the National Investigation and Interventions Unit, which investigates serious and organised crime and the Dutch National Police. The distributors arrested in Spain are due to be extradited to the Netherlands. The two distributors arrested in Holland were released on bail on 30 January 2025. 4. MultiVersus Shuts Down In May, But Can Still Be Played Offline If You Update In Time MultiVersus Shuts Down In May, But Can Still Be Played Offline If You Update In Time Player First Games and WB Games have announced that MultiVersus will be shut down on May 30 and that Season 5’s content update will be its last one. Along with the server closure, MultiVersus will also be delisted from all digital storefronts. Season 5 starts on Feruary 4 and is adding two new characters to the roster:DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny. They’ll both be unlockable through gameplay, with Aquaman as a battle pass reward and Lola as a daily calendar login reward. Online features will be available through Season 5 until May 30 at 9 AM PT. Afterwards, MultiVersus will have an option for local gameplay, either solo with AI-controlled opponents or up to three other players. However, in order to do so, you’ll need to download the new update between February 4 at 9 AM PT and May 30 at 9 AM PT. With that installed, you’ll then need to log in so that a local save file can be created with your unlocked and purchased content. Starting today, January 31, players can no longer use real-world money to purchase Gleamium, which is MultiVersus’ in-game currency. However, those who still have Gleamium or character tokens can use them. MultiVersus first launched into open beta in 2022 and then taken down for a ******* of time after a year, so this isn’t the first time the game experienced some sort of interruption. It then came back fully released in 2024 with new content. It’s an all-star platform brawler similar to Super Smash Bros. It features characters from across various WB properties, including DC, Looney Tunes, and Cartoon Network. In GameSpot’s MultiVersus review, we said, “Warner Bros’ all-star battle proves to be a worthy contender to the platform fighter throne.” Source link #MultiVersus #Shuts #Played #Offline #Update #Time Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  5. Campaigner launches bid to ban cross-sex hormones for under-18s Campaigner launches bid to ban cross-sex hormones for under-18s Hugh Pym and Nick Triggle BBC News BBC News Keira Bell says she deeply regrets the treatments that she underwent Health Secretary Wes Streeting is being threatened with legal action if he does not ban the private ***** of cross-sex hormones such as testosterone to under 18s. Lawyers acting for three people – including campaigner Keira Bell – have written to Streeting urging him to introduce a ban as he has done for puberty blockers for children questioning their gender identity. Ms Bell says her life has been “flipped upside down” by taking the drugs that have some irreversible effects. The other two people involved are parents and wish to remain anonymous. Cross-sex hormone therapy is used to help people transition to a different gender from the one they were born into. In December the health secretary announced an indefinite ban on puberty-suppressing drugs for gender dysphoria. But in a letter sent by Sinclairs Law, Streeting has been told the law firm will seek a judicial review – a way of challenging the lawfulness of a decision by a public body – unless he follows suit with cross-sex hormones. The lawyers said private clinics are providing these to under 18s, despite the fact that they pose at least an equal risk as puberty blockers. The letter, seen by the BBC, points to potential health risks to children’s developing brains, bones and reproductive system. Keira Bell has previously taken legal action against the NHS – after her treatment when she was a teenager more than a decade ago at what was then the only NHS gender clinic. She was given puberty blockers at 16 and then the male hormone testosterone at 17 before having surgery to remove her breasts. Ms Bell, 28, told BBC News: “I was very vulnerable and was dealing with a lot of issues. “With cross-sex hormones… it changes not only your physical and mental state, but also your social state, especially for females who are taking testosterone. I’m one of those people.” The hormones can cause irreversible effects, such as voice deepening. She said: “My whole life has been flipped upside down and there’s no way back from it.” Ms Bell says she wants to protect other young people from going through similar regret. “Things can feel very urgent so it is important for young people to remember that your whole life is ahead of you. “This sort of protection needs to be put into law,” she says. Paul Conrathe, the lawyer who is representing Ms Bell and the two other individuals, said: “Given what we know about the unscrupulous and harmful practices of unregulated overseas gender clinics it is remarkable that the secretary of state has not banned the prescription of cross-sex hormones. “He banned puberty blockers, but failed to ban even more harmful cross-sex hormones that expose children to irreversible lifelong changes. “This harmful trade continues unashamed and emboldened at the failure of the government to protect vulnerable children.” The Department of Health and Social Care did not respond directly to the threat of a judicial review, but said it was working with regulators to tighten up rules around private provision of cross-sex hormones. A spokesman pointed out that the landmark Cass Review into gender care published last year did not call for a ban of cross-sex hormones for those aged 16 to 18. He added that “additional safeguards” were being put in place in the NHS with a group of health professionals now reviewing cases before cross-sex hormones are given to young people. The NHS can prescribe cross-sex hormones to under 18s. But the Cass Review found that there was a lack of research and “weak evidence” for medical interventions. As a result, NHS England wrote to all NHS gender clinics saying “extreme caution” should be exercised before recommending cross-sex hormones for under 18s. Changes are being made to the way NHS gender services for children are run with a move away from medical interventions and a greater focus on wider needs, including with mental health. Puberty blockers are no longer used by them at all – except in clinical trials. The legal move comes as the courts continue to hear the case involving a mother who is trying to stop her 16-year-old being given cross-sex hormones to change their gender. The case will return to the High Court on Friday. Between the ages of 16 and 18, whilst not legally an adult, a young person is usually viewed as being able to make their own medical decisions. 6. From hearing aids to pacemakers, tariffs may drive up medical device costs – National From hearing aids to pacemakers, tariffs may drive up medical device costs – National Whether pacemakers, insulin pumps or artificial hip joints, Canadians may face a spike in health costs if U.S. President Donald Trump imposes a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada, set to take effect Saturday. With the looming tariff, Medtech Canada, a national association representing 120 medical technology companies, warned the cost of health technologies could rise significantly — in both countries — if tariffs are implemented. “Medtech Canada has been advocating on behalf of the medical technology industry on this important matter, and our members are planning for and taking this tariff threat very seriously,” said Gerry Frenette, vice president of Medtech Canada. “We’re working with our partners in government and other key stakeholders to help ensure that patients and clinicians have continued access to all the necessary medical technologies they need,” he told Global News in a Friday email. Story continues below advertisement Medical equipment has typically been exempt from tariffs between Canada and the U.S., largely due to free trade agreements like the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). However, Trump’s proposed tariffs could mark a significant shift, potentially making the costs of medical equipment — such as MRI machines, ventilators and wheelchairs — much more expensive. In a letter to Canada’s Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc on Jan. 21, Medtech warned the potential tariffs on ********* exports, along with retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada on the U.S., would have an “immense” impact on the health-care system, burdening patients significantly. 1:51 Trump doubles down on tariffs for Canada, still deciding on oil taxes “The pandemic and post-pandemic supply chain challenges highlighted the immense importance of our sector. In recent years, there has been significant growth in the manufacturing of medical technologies in Canada, but many of these manufacturers are reliant on U.S.-based suppliers for raw materials and intermediary products,” the letter stated. Story continues below advertisement Canada’s largest trading partner for medical devices is the United States. Get weekly health news Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday. In 2022, medical device imports from the U.S. were valued at C$5.2 billion, representing 38 per cent of Canada’s total medical device imports, according to Canada’s industry sector intelligence. Trending Now Alberta Premier Danielle Smith pitching joint Canada-U.S. NORAD military base in Arctic Ottawa pushes back proposed capital gains tax changes to 2026 And the same year, Canada’s medical device exports to the U.S. were C$3.08 billion, or 74 per cent of Canada’s total medical device exports. The letter emphasized that due to the significant trade relationship, “the medical technology sector should not be targeted for retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., as the impact on our health-care system and patients would be too immense.” 2:22 These six industries would be hit hardest by Trump tariffs The letter also stated that ********* technologies play a key role in supporting the U.S. health-care system and its citizens. U.S. tariffs on these products would drive up production costs, which could ultimately make health-care less affordable for providers and patients in both countries. Story continues below advertisement “Furthermore, U.S. tariffs diminish the ability of ********* medical technology companies to compete in the U.S. market, which, as previously mentioned, is our largest export destination,” the letter said. “The integrated nature of the North American supply chain of medical technologies means that tariffs from both sides of the border will reduce market access and impact the affordability and accessibility of healthcare in both Canada and the U.S.,” it concluded. 7. The biggest winners and losers from this week’s volatile market The biggest winners and losers from this week’s volatile market Every weekday, the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer releases the Homestretch — an actionable afternoon update, just in time for the last hour of trading on Wall Street. Market update: Stocks moved off their session highs and struggled to hold onto their gains. The S & P 500 is on pace for a small weekly dip, recovering most of its losses from Monday’s DeepSeek sell-off. The market was coasting for most of Friday on apparent optimism that President Donald Trump would delay imposing tariffs. Nothing was ever official and there was still a lot of debating if Trump would take a hard line or a soft line on trade. But the market gained some clarity on Trump’s position at around 1:15 pm ET and stocks dropped when White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the President plans to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada and 10% on China starting this Saturday, Feb. 1. The news triggered pullbacks in the two most tariff-sensitive stocks in the portfolio: Stanley ****** & Decker and Constellation Brands . This week’s winners: The top-performing sector was communication services. Three other outperforming groups were health care, financials, and staples, thanks to the market rotating out of growth stocks and into value. One big earnings gainer this week was Meta Platforms . The stock was strong all week thanks to the market’s expectation that it will be a big beneficiary of open-source and low-cost AI models. The company also reported a strong fourth quarter. Some other big earnings gainers were IBM and cruise lines Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines . Starbucks had a great week too on some encouraging data points about its turnaround. And then there’s the solar tracker company Nextracker . It’s not in the S & P 500 but if it was, it would have been the biggest gainer. The losers: Some of the biggest losses were in AI infrastructure stocks. The DeepSeek news hit chip stocks like Nvidia , Broadcom , and Micron ; networking and server companies Arista Networks and Dell ; electrical equipment and power generation names like Eaton and GE Vernova ; and utilities Constellation Energy and Vista . Focusing on Nvidia for a moment. Although we expressed concern on Thursday about the potential of customers pausing orders as they digest DeepSeek’s low-cost model, a report published by SemiAnalysis on Friday suggested DeepSeek may not be as capital-expenditure efficient as the company claimed. Based on the report’s analysis, DeepSeek’s total server capex was roughly $1.6 billion, far greater than what they claimed. If the report is true, and it very well may be, this story would serve as serious pushback to this week’s narrative that less compute is needed to support AI, making this week’s sell-off potentially overblown. Outside of AI, one of the big earnings movers to the downside was UPS after announcing its plan to lower volume from its largest customer Amazon . Danaher was a loser within health care and it was quite a surprise given Thermo Fisher’s more upbeat outlook. It was likely conservative on Danaher’s end, but Cramer has said he is frustrated by management’s complacency. Walgreens shares sunk Friday after announcing a suspension of its quarterly dividend. And in retail, Deckers Outdoor shares dropped after providing softer-than-expected guidance. Lastly, energy had a tough week, too. Next week: We are approaching the busiest week of earnings season, with about one-quarter of the S & P 500 and eight companies in the portfolio scheduled to report. On the data side, we’ll see ISM manufacturing and services and the usual string of jobs data, culminating with the monthly non-farm payroll report on Friday. 8. Sleeping Dogs Movie Adaptation and Sequel Mentioned by Shang Chi Actor Sleeping Dogs Movie Adaptation and Sequel Mentioned by Shang Chi Actor Shang Chi actor reveals that his dream has been to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen and then a sequel that players have been hoping for for years. zengames44 recently tagged Simu Liu on X, asking if he’s working behind the scenes to bring one of the fan-favourite games to the movies. To everyone’s surprise, Simu Liu replied to the post, stating that he is already “Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen.” However, fans are a bit confused, as it was shared during a recent interview that the Sleeping Dogs movie is dead. Interestingly, in a recent post, Simu Liu doubled down on his plans with Sleeping Dogs, discussing his dreams for the franchise. Liu shared that only some movies can make it from the “pitch phase to greenlight” and that “it has been tiring” pitching the film to executives who do not understand the game. However, his dream remains: “First a movie, then a sequel game for everyone.” “Sleeping Dogs,” released in 2012, was developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix. Fans quickly fell in love with the game’s open-world setting, which allows players to explore a vibrant and bustling city set in Hong Kong. 9. Outlook for Feb. 3-7, 2025 Outlook for Feb. 3-7, 2025 Earnings season ramps up another notch next week to start February, forcing investors to wade through a barrage of quarterly results amid ongoing policy uncertainty that promises upheaval for an already choppy stock market. The January jobs report is also due out Friday. Next week will be the busiest stretch for fourth-quarter earnings. More than 120 S & P 500 companies are scheduled to report, including mega-cap companies Alphabet and Amazon , as well as a swath of consumer-facing behemoths, from PepsiCo to Walt Disney to Mondelez . Thus far, it’s been a good season. More than 77% of the 179 S & P 500 companies that have already reported have beaten expectations, according to FactSet data. What’s more, an anticipated blended growth rate of 13% by the time fourth quarter earnings wrap up has reassured investors that earnings growth can justify the market’s steep valuations after the past two years’ runup. Nevertheless, high expectations around earnings — when investors are already monitoring White House updates on tariff duties, awaiting confirmations to key Cabinet positions and deciphering the future of artificial intelligence after the debut of DeepSeek — means corporate outlooks are gaining an even greater amount of attention as a means to identify the market’s winners and losers. “What it really shifts to is one-off company events, and what companies say [about their future business], will drive the narrative next week,” said Brian Leonard, portfolio manager at Keeley Teton Advisors. .SPX 5D mountain S & P 500, over five days Stocks are wrapping up a volatile week. By late Friday, the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were set to close out the week with losses, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was trading roughly 1% higher. On a monthly basis, however, the major averages were on track to close out the month with gains, a bullish sign for 2025 . The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by more than 5%, the S & P 500 was ahead almost 3% and the Nasdaq Composite had increased abouty 1.5%. Policy uncertainty, jobs For investors, much of the news next week will come from what company executives say on conference calls, responding in real time to any changes in policy out of Washington. Late in the day Thursday, President Donald Trump confirmed he would impose 25% blanket tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada — the two biggest trading partners of the United States — starting as soon as Saturday. He has yet to disclose whether the levies would include oil imports from those two countries. Trump has touted tariffs as a better deal for American companies, but many economists worry that the effects will be inflationary, depress business activity and dampen consumer spending in reaction to pricing pressures. Higher tariffs will also blow a hole in corporate planning models and heighten uncertainty. Some beneficiaries of the change are more obvious: Small-cap companies, typically domiciled in the U.S., are more insulated from increases in trade levies than large-cap multinational corporations that have sizable overseas sales and operations. “What you might see is that there’s so many unknowns through tariffs, FX, just kind of international relations and then some domestic policy,” Keeley Teton Advisors’ Leonard said. “You might see management teams err on the side of caution, especially after two strong years in the market, just to set expectations in a reasonable footing, considering that there’s a bunch of unknowns in 2025.” To take one example, on Friday Colgate-Palmolive fell 4% after the soap-and-toothpaste maker forecast weak 2025 sales due to the negative impact of foreign exchange rates, with CFO Stanley Sutula saying on a conference call that the company is “planning for multiple scenarios.” “It’s not just the tariff that may be on Mexico or Canada or China, it’s the impact of retaliatory tariffs would also come into play on those supply chains. So we’re looking at very tactical short-term, mid-term and long-term, if necessary, actions,” Sutula said. “But until we get more clarity, we have not included anything in our guidance.” On the other hand, Tractor Supply CEO Harry Lawton said on his earnings call that the power tool and fencing retailer is “confident in our ability to navigate” tariffs in spite of the uncertainty around the new presidential administration. Measuring the macro economy, the January nonfarm payrolls report is due out next Friday. Economists polled by FactSet expect the economy to have added 165,000 jobs last month, down from 223,000 new hires the prior month. The unemployment rate is forecast to have remained unchanged at 4.1%. No such thing as a safe stock The AI leaders that dominated the market the past two years will continue to be scrutinized next week, with Magnificent Seven earnings coming from Google-parent Alphabet and Amazon . How investors react to those will have more to do with how they may be insulated from rising AI competition after news of a cheaper model from ******** startup DeepSeek upended the idea that the current market leaders are untouchable. In spite of the tech rout this week — the PHLX Semiconductor Index slumped nearly 7% — investors remain wary that the full implications of DeepSeek have yet to play out in stock prices. Nvidia , in particular, has failed to attract institutional buyers — even tumbling more than 12% this week — though small investors have swooped in. Investors in Nvidia and tech stocks such as Broadcom “have really got to pay attention,” said Kim Forrest, investment chief at Bokeh Capital Partners. “And if you have profits, maybe it’s time to take some profits, because things are changing in ways that we can’t comprehend yet.” “It’s better than having a loss on it by holding it too long,” Forrest continued. “Things are changing, and your idea that this is a safe stock is never a good assumption. Bad things happen to good companies all the time.” Still, on Friday, Nasdaq ticked higher — promising possible signs of revival heading into the weekend. As they did this week, earnings have the potential to move the S & P 500’s dominant stocks as well as the broader market. Apple emerged mostly unscathed from its earnings report this week, up about 6% partly due to the iPhone maker spending less than competitors on AI. Meta Platforms also came out strong from its earnings report. On the other hand, Microsoft is down more than 6% this week after issuing weak current-quarter guidance, even as it posted results that topped expectations. Week ahead calendar All times ET. 10. While Switch 2 May be a Distant Dream, Elden Ring Nightreign Can be a Bestseller In Another Popular Handheld While Switch 2 May be a Distant Dream, Elden Ring Nightreign Can be a Bestseller In Another Popular Handheld Despite being officially announced recently, there is unfortunately a bit more time before gamers are able to get their hands on the much-awaited Nintendo Switch 2. However, that would not stop new games from releasing, especially the upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign by Hidetaka Miyazaki, which could potentially dominate on another handheld liked by gamers. Main Cover for Elden Ring Nightreign | Image Credit FromSoftware Enter the Steam Deck, which happens to be Valve’s entry handheld gaming market. Unlike the Switch, it isn’t limited by underpowered hardware. Instead, it works on high-powered tech instead, letting players enjoy their massive Steam libraries on the go, which include the likes of the already famous Elden Ring. Elden Ring Nighreign on the Steam Deck Elden Ring Nightreign on the Switch 2 will propose to be a big hit | Nintendo FromSoftware has mastered the art of creating punishing yet rewarding experiences, and Elden Ring was the culmination of everything the studio has learned from creating different franchises over the years, becoming one of the best open-world games to have ever come out. Moreover, what’s more impressive is how the massive and fairly demanding game has found a way to run smoothly on the Steam Deck. This can only make fans like us hope that the upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign will be able to work perfectly on the console as well. While the exact details for the game’s release remain undisclosed, the studio has already started going through network tests, meaning we could potentially see a release in the coming few months. With continued optimization after its release on the Steam Deck, there is no doubt about the fact that Elden Ring and its co-op extension will just continue to improve in performance over time, which leaves us to wonder how it will perform on the Switch 2. FromSoftware and the Switch 2: The golden opportunity of all the time FromSoftware needs to release more of its games on the Switch platform | Nintendo Imagine getting to play something like Bloodborne on the go, or finally beating Radahn on your 1000th attempt on Switch 2 while commuting through a train. Bearing in mind the past rumors revolving around the platform, it might just have the same technical power as a PlayStation 4 Pro. Not only does it mean that you will be able to run hardcore AAA titles, but particularly the ones made by Hidetaka Miyazaki. The Dark Souls: Remastered edition is already available on the original Switch 1, which opens up the path for more games from the studio to appear as well. Ultimately, it remains up to gamers to choose what console they would like to enjoy the upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign on. 11. Exacluster with 144 Nvidia H200 AI GPUs detailed by its designer: Hydra Host enters the scene Exacluster with 144 Nvidia H200 AI GPUs detailed by its designer: Hydra Host enters the scene Earlier this month, we reported on ExaAILabs’s Exacluster, a cluster of 18 machines running 144 Nvidia H200 GPUs, which happens to be one of the first clusters based on these processors. Since then, Hydra Host, the company that facilitated the construction of the cluster, has given us additional details about the system. The cluster uses Lenovo systems with multiple customizations from Hydra Host, which played a significant role. The machine can also be rented — when not in use by the owner — through Hydra’s Brokkr platform. A Lot of Compute Power The cluster’s backbone consists of 18 Lenovo nodes equipped with 144 Nvidia H200 GPUs and 20TB of HBM3E memory — or eight per system — enabling compute performance of 570 FP8 PetaTOPS for AI. 16 nodes are configured and fine-tuned by HydraHost for training, which requires massive computation and memory performance, while the remaining two serve as inference nodes. In addition, Hydra Host installed its Brokkr platform for GPU provisioning, management, and remote renting (more on this later). Hydra Host collaborated with Computacenter to design a high-performance networking architecture tailored to the cluster’s needs. The setup uses 3.2Tbps InfiniBand for east-west traffic and 400Gbps Ethernet for north-south communication, including dual 200Gbps connections per server and 400Gbps Dell Ethernet switches. Computacenter’s networking engineers ensured all components aligned with Nvidia’s reference architecture for seamless compatibility. “We supplied the 18 Lenovo nodes with H200 GPUs (16 interconnected and two inference nodes), designed the networking architecture in collaboration with Computacenter, and facilitated colocation through Patmos,” explained Andrea Holt, a spokesperson for Hydra Host. The cluster itself is quite powerful, even in terms of general-purpose computing. The servers feature 192 96-core processors (for a total of 3,456 cores) paired with 36TB of DDR5 memory and 270TB of NVMe solid-state storage. There are spare bays so that storage space can be expanded easily. The supercomputer uses a network custom-built by HydraHost. The company also brought in Patmos to handle colocation, providing enough power (around 100kW) and cooling for the power-hungry and hot machines. Best Performance at Best Price The Exacluster costs $5 million, averaging $277,777 per machine, comparable to a single 8-way H200 baseboard rather than a full server. Here is where it gets interesting. Who facilitated that price? Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. On the one hand, Hydra Host is a close Nvidia partner and only offers Nvidia GPUs as a service. In addition, its Brokkr software is optimized primarily for CUDA. On the other hand, ExaAI is a company backed by Nvidia, so it can potentially get preferential pricing. “We are best in market at getting our customers the right GPU for their needs and at the best price,” said Ryan Horjus, Lead Sales Engineer at Hydra. “This cluster was supported by Nvidia from an architecture design and their Inception program. Hydra handled it for Exa, as we do for other companies.” Hydra also specializes in building custom solutions for startups and even monetizes their machines when not in use. “Hydra has helped startups get into their own clusters for better pricing through bulk purchasing,” Horjus added. “They can achieve ideal pricing through our network. They are also able to monetize the servers when not in use via the Brokkr management platform.” Speaking of Brokkr, it is a GPU management and provisioning software and a monetization platform for GPUs. It provides datacenters and startups with a turnkey software solution for getting their hardware into customers’ hands and getting them paid for, explained Ariel Deschapell, chief technology officer and co-founder of Hydra. “One of its key features is automated bare metal provisioning and lifecycle management,” described Deschapell. “That means the platform does all the work of configuring and managing the base server OS and firmware, setting up drivers and other supporting software, and running tests on the GPUs and other components. That speeds up and standardizes the delivery process significantly, reducing idle time on servers and GPUs. It also makes it easy to resell unused servers later to other users on the Brokkr platform looking for bare metal GPUs, if capacity needs change.” Source link #Exacluster #Nvidia #H200 #GPUs #detailed #designer #Hydra #Host #enters #scene Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  15. What is DOS (disk operating system)? What is DOS (disk operating system)? A DOS, or disk operating system, is an operating system (OS) that runs from a disk drive. The term can also refer to a particular family of disk operating systems, most commonly MS-DOS (Microsoft DOS). MS-DOS was the main operating system for personal computers (PCs) until 1995, when its popularity waned due to the introduction of the more user-friendly, graphical user interface (GUI)-based Windows 95 operating system. History of DOS Early computers of the 1940s and 1950s did not have disk drives. Instead, they were hard-wired to carry out specific computations. Later computers were able to store instructions loaded into the computer’s memory using paper-based media like punch cards and still later, using magnetic tapes. Computer memory space was limited, and when the instructions to control a computer were moved onto a disk drive, such as a floppy disk or internal hard disk drive (HDD), it was considered cutting-edge technology. An operating system is the software that provides the instructions that control a computer’s hardware components (memory, processor, etc.) and peripheral devices, as well as allows other software programs to function. The instructions might be stored in the HDD or other storage medium. A DOS is a specific type of OS that runs from the computer’s HDD and provides a command-line interface (CLI) to allow users to access and control the system and its various components by typing commands using a keyboard. The use of a CLI is the chief difference between disk operating systems and modern GUI-based operating systems. The term DOS is also used to describe several similar command-line disk operating systems. Early computers, such as the Commodore 64, Atari 800 and Apple II, all featured a disk operating system: Commodore Business Machines DOS, Atari DOS and Apple DOS, respectively. DOS/360 was an OS for IBM mainframes, which first appeared in 1966, but it is unrelated to the 8086-based DOS of the 1980s used on personal computers. How does a disk operating system work? When a computer is powered on, it goes through various steps called the boot process. When running a disk operating system, these six booting steps are standard: The read-only memory (ROM) bootstrap loader reads the Master Boot Record and passes control over to it. The boot record loads the disk operating system into memory, which takes control of the machine. The computer transfers data stored on a magnetic disk to its main memory, the random access memory (RAM). It also transfers data to external devices attached to the computer, such as a computer screen or printer. The computer provides various application programming interfaces for programs like character input/output (I/O), memory management, program loading and termination, as well as handling user input via a keyboard. The OS also provides file system management that organizes, reads and writes files on storage. The management system uses a hierarchical structure of directories, subdirectories and files. DOS and command-line interface Because DOS has a character-based interface rather than a GUI, its users must type textual commands in its command line to indicate the actions they want the OS to perform, such as finding a file or running a specific program. The command line process can be complex and tedious, which is why nongraphical OSes are becoming obsolete. That said, nongraphical OSes use minimal system resources; they can be lightweight, fast and flexible. Also, users who know the operating system’s standard commands might find it easier to use than a GUI-based OS, particularly if they want to do the following: Troubleshoot hardware or software issues. Recover data from a corrupted HDD. Create HDD partitions. Run antivirus software. Run legacy software. Set up and configure the system BIOS. Set up file/data backup. Update system date/clock settings. The startup screen from an early version of IBM DOS shows some of the options that can be run from the command line prompt. DOS features The main features of all disk operating systems are as follows: CLI. There is no GUI in any DOS, so mouse inputs are not accepted. It is a character-based interface system where all commands are entered in text at the command-line prompt. Prompt. Disk operating systems provide a visual message, known as a prompt, that provides the location of the current directory or folder and enables users to enter various commands from the keyboard. Management. A DOS is useful to manage a computer’s files, I/O system and memory. Batch files. Disk operating systems support batch files that are macros that can be used to automate groups of commands to simplify tasks, and save time and effort. Kernel. The DOS kernel functions as the brain of the OS; it manages the computer’s fundamental operations (memory allocation, file access, etc.) and provides an interface for the computer and its programs to interact with each other. Data recovery capabilities. Booting a computer from the DOS can help recover data in the event of an expected event, such as a ****** or hard drive corruption. DOS limitations Although it was a ubiquitous operating system, DOS does have some limitations: No built-in security. It does not have built-in security, such as file ownership and permissions. No multiusers or multitasking. As single-task operating systems, disk operating systems do not support multiusers or multitasking. Thus, only one program can run at a time (even though it provides direct access to the basic I/O system and underlying hardware). Challenging interface. The CLI, in which a user must type in commands, requires the user to remember commands to run programs and do other OS tasks. Unexpected output. A small mistake in typing the command can result in unexpected or unwanted consequences. For example, a user might want to list the files in the current directory by typing cd \directory_name. However, that command changes the current working directory to the named directory. To list the contents of a folder, the command dir should be used. Slow updating of disk directory information. Some disk operating systems like MS-DOS do not update the disk directory information until a file is closed by the application, which can keep the file in an unsafe state and result in programming issues. Common DOS commands MS-DOS is not case-sensitive, so commands can be typed in either uppercase or lowercase. However, other disk operating systems have case-sensitive CLIs. DOS commands include the following: Common DOS commands MS-DOS is not case-sensitive, so commands can be typed in either uppercase or lowercase. However, other disk operating systems have case-sensitive CLIs. DOS commands include the following. More history and future of DOS The arrival of the microprocessor in the 1970s started a computing revolution, and the market for personal computers (PCs) began to *****. IBM released the IBM 5150 Personal Computer in August 1981. To speed up the development of this new computer, IBM decided to license various components from other companies. IBM’s first choice for an OS was the CP/M-86 software from Digital Research, but disagreements over nondisclosure agreements and licensing led IBM to choose a CP/M-like OS from Microsoft that was originally called QDOS 86-DOS. Microsoft bought the rights to market QDOS 86-DOS in 1980. This OS was created by Tim Paterson at Seattle Computer Products (SCP) and was originally called QDOS, an acronym of Quick and Dirty OS. The number “86” refers to the fact that the OS was originally designed to be used with the Intel 8086 processor. After leaving SCP for Microsoft in 1981, Paterson worked on the PC-DOS version of 86-DOS for IBM’s PC. PC-DOS was the first widely installed DOS used in PCs running on Intel 8086. Microsoft produced its own almost identical version of PC-DOS called MS-DOS, which was first released in 1981. As PC sales grew, the ubiquity of MS-DOS grew as well. Subsequent versions of the OS provided improved performance and included additional functionalities, such as support for foreign and extended characters and larger HDDs. Later versions of MS-DOS also enhanced memory management, featured an improved text editor, and provided network support. When Microsoft first introduced Windows as a GUI for MS-DOS, early users had to type “WIN” at the DOS prompt to launch the Windows program. Windows has since evolved from being a GUI program running under MS-DOS to a full OS taking over as the default OS, though it was not until Windows XP that consumer versions of Windows stopped relying on the DOS program win.com to bootstrap the Windows kernel. The last retail version of MS-DOS was MS-DOS 6.22; PC-DOS 2000 was the last retail release of PC-DOS. MS-DOS was still bundled as part of Windows but no longer required a separate software license. It can still be run under Windows using a command processor that emulates the MS-DOS interface. There is also an open source version of DOS called FreeDOS that is based on and compatible with MS-DOS. Other versions of these OSes include DR-DOS, ROM-DOS and PTS-DOS (PhysTechSoft DOS). Because of the many legacy applications that they support, disk operating systems will likely continue to be used for the foreseeable future. Today, they can be used for simple embedded systems or other use cases because they provide machine independence and because the licensing costs are zero for free or open source OSes. That said, these legacy OSes present critical security problems that make it hard to safeguard them against modern cyberattacks such as SQL injections, man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks, zero-day vulnerabilities, and more familiar attacks from viruses, worms, ransomware and Trojans. Disk operating systems played a significant role in the early development of personal computing. Today, some 55 years after their initial development, they hold a place as one of the most important types of OSes in the history of computing. The latest Microsoft OS is Windows 11. Check out this Windows 11 ****** course for desktop admins and Microsoft users, and explore what you need to know when planning to upgrade to Windows 11. Note: For disk operating system, the acronym used is always DOS (all three letters in uppercase). The acronym DoS with a lowercase “o” is short for denial of service, a method of attacking a networked computer by sending it an abnormally high number of requests in order to exhaust its resources so that genuine users cannot gain access. 16. Ukraine says N Korea troops likely pulled from front line over heavy losses Ukraine says N Korea troops likely pulled from front line over heavy losses Ukrainian special forces fighting in Russia’s western Kursk region have told the BBC they have not seen any North Korean troops there for the past three weeks. A spokesman said it was likely they had pulled out after suffering heavy losses. Last week, Western officials told the BBC that, out of some 11,000 troops sent from North Korea to fight for Russia, 1,000 had been killed in just three months. North Korea and Russia have not commented. On Friday, the Ukrainian special forces spokesman told the BBC he was only referring to areas in the Kursk region where his forces were fighting in. The spokesman did not say how long that front line was. And while this is not the full picture, it does suggest significant North Korean casualties. Separately, the New York Times also reported that the North Koreans had been pulled off the front lines. The newspaper quoted US officials as saying the withdrawal may not be a permanent one, and the soldiers could return after receiving additional training or after the Russians come up with new ways of deploying them to avoid such heavy casualties. Reports attributed to South Korean intelligence say the North Koreans are unprepared for the realities of modern warfare, and are especially vulnerable to being targeted by Ukrainian drones. Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un have in recent months deepened bilateral ties, signing a security and defence treaty. Pyongyang’s assistance to Moscow now also extends to large amounts of ammunition and weapons. Last August, elite Ukrainian troops launched a lightning offensive in Kursk, seizing more than 1,000 sq km (386 sq miles) of Russian territory. Since then, Russian forces have managed to retake a sizeable chunk of that region. Kyiv’s surprise incursion was aimed at changing the dynamics of the war. It was initially hoped the operation would relieve pressure on other parts of the more than 1,000km-long (620 miles) frontline, particularly in eastern Ukraine. Moscow is continuing its relentless – albeit slow – advance in the east, seizing a number of settlements in the Donetsk region in recent weeks. Now Kyiv is looking to hold on to the land it occupies in Kursk as leverage for any possible ceasefire or peace negotiations with Moscow. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Source link #Ukraine #Korea #troops #pulled #front #line #heavy #losses Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Bitcoin, crypto to drive Nasdaq 100 gains instead of Big Tech argument Bitcoin, crypto to drive Nasdaq 100 gains instead of Big Tech argument The tech-driven Nasdaq 100 may be undergoing a historic shift as it turns 40 this week. According to Strategas Securities’ Todd Sohn, cryptocurrency companies could fuel the next wave of gains. “Bitcoin is to crypto as the QQQ … is to technology type stocks,” the firm’s exchange-traded fund and technical strategist told CNBC’s “ETF Edge” this week. “Bitcoin is going to be the biggest. The Qs will be the biggest.” As of Thursday’s close, the Nasdaq 100 is up 17,106% since its Jan. 31,1985, inception. President Donald Trump’s election helped fuel bitcoin record highs due to high hopes on deregulation. The cryptocurrency is trading around the $104,000 level. Sohn thinks a buildout of the crypto universe is already taking shape. “I think that’s already happening based on some of the recent filings we’ve seen,” he said. Sohn also dives into the popularity of the crypto options business. “With crypto, you can now build out a risk management,” said Sohn. “Say … I want to gain some upside, but I would like income. So, I’m going to buy a covered call crypto ETF … just to limit any volatility and keep the weekly or monthly income streams coming. So, this is all sort of important stuff that’s going to keep happening via [the] Nasdaq.” The crypto ETF market has been booming. According to FactSet, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), which was launched on Jan. 5, 2024, and trades on the Nasdaq, has amassed more than $58 billion in assets as of Tuesday. Nasdaq President Nelson Griggs sees regulatory clarity as a key factor in crypto’s future growth. “A whole sector gets developed around something like digital crypto. And now potentially having more clarity on the rules of what it actually is going to be,” Griggs said in the same interview. 19. New York doctor indicted for prescribing abortion pill in Louisiana New York doctor indicted for prescribing abortion pill in Louisiana New York doctor sued for prescribing abortion pills to Texas woman New York doctor sued for prescribing abortion pills to Texas woman 02:16 BATON ROUGE, La. — A New York doctor was indicted by a Louisiana grand jury on Friday for allegedly prescribing an abortion pill online in the Deep South state, which has one of the strictest near-total abortion bans in the U.S. Grand jurors at the District Court for the Parish of West Baton Rouge issued an indictment against Dr. Margaret Carpenter; her company, Nightingale Medical, PC; and a third person. All three were charged with criminal abortion by means of abortion-inducing drugs, a felony. The case appears to be the first instance of criminal charges against a doctor accused of sending abortion pills to another state, at least since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 and opened the door for states to have strict anti-abortion laws. Carpenter was also sued by the Texas attorney general in December under similar allegations of sending pills to that state. That case did not involve criminal charges. Carpenter did not immediately return a message. Testing New York’s shield laws The indictment could be the first direct test of New York’s shield laws, which are intended to protect prescribers who use telehealth to provide abortion pills to patients in states where abortion is banned. “Earlier today, a New York doctor was indicted in Louisiana for using telemedicine to prescribe abortion medication to a patient. That’s right: a doctor is being prosecuted for providing basic health care to her patient. We always knew that overturning Roe v. Wade wasn’t the end of the road for anti-abortion politicians. That’s why I worked with the Legislature to pass nation-leading laws to protect providers and patients. It’s more critical than ever for states to step up and protect reproductive freedom — and I’ll never back down from this fight,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a prepared release. Hochul signed the bill protecting doctors from out-of-state lawsuits in 2023. New York Attorney General Letitia James, who would enforce the shield law, said in a statement: “Abortion care is health care. The criminalization of abortion care is a direct and brazen attack on Americans’ bodily autonomy and their right to reproductive freedom. This cowardly attempt out of Louisiana to weaponize the law against out-of-state providers is unjust and un-American. We will not allow bad actors to undermine our providers’ ability to deliver critical care. Medication abortion is safe, effective, and necessary, and New York will ensure that it remains available to all Americans who need it.” Pills have become the most common means of abortion in the U.S., accounting for nearly two-thirds of them by 2023. They’re also at the center of political and legal action over abortion. In January, one judge let three states continue to challenge federal government approvals for how one of the drugs usually involved can be prescribed. Louisiana classifies abortion pills as “controlled dangerous substances” The indictment comes just months after Louisiana became the first state with a law to reclassify both mifepristone and misoprostol as “controlled dangerous substances.” The drugs are still allowed, but medical personnel have to go through extra steps to access them. Under the legislation, if someone knowingly possesses mifepristone or misoprostol without a valid prescription for any purpose, they could be fined up to $5,000 and sent to jail for one to five years. The law carves out protections for pregnant women who obtain the drug without a prescription to take on their own. Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, Louisiana has had a near-total abortion ban, without any exceptions for ***** or *******. Under the law, physicians convicted of performing an ******** abortion, including one with pills, face up to 15 years in prison, $200,000 in fines and the loss of their medical license. “Make no mistake, since Roe v Wade was overturned, we’ve witnessed a disturbing pattern of interference with women’s rights,” the Abortion Coalition of Telemedicine, where Carpenter is one of the founders, said in a statement. “It’s no secret the United States has a history of violence and harassment against abortion providers, and this state-sponsored effort to prosecute a doctor providing safe and effective care should alarm everyone.” The Battle Over Abortion More More Source link #York #doctor #indicted #prescribing #abortion #pill #Louisiana Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  20. Trump Media gifts DJT shares to FBI pick Kash Patel Trump Media gifts DJT shares to FBI pick Kash Patel Kash Patel, U.S. President Donald Trump’s nominee to be director of the FBI, looks on as he testifies before a Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., January 30, 2025. Evelyn Hockstein | Reuters Trump Media this week gifted thousands of shares of company stock to President Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI director, Kash Patel, to Trump’s eldest son and to four other board members, new regulatory filings show. The company awarded 25,946 stock shares each to Patel, Donald Trump Jr. and the president’s pick for Education secretary, Linda McMahon, who all serve as Trump Media directors, the filings Thursday reveal. Three other directors — former U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer, Eric Swider and Kyle Green — received the same number of DJT shares at no cost, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings. The filings said the awards were granted Tuesday. Trump Media that day closed trading at $30.04 per share. At that price, the shares have a paper value of more than $779,400. But most of the stock awarded has restrictions on what it can be sold. DJT was trading at around $31.50 per share as of 2:30 p.m. ET Friday. The filings said the stock was granted “as consideration for services provided” between late March — when Trump Media went public after completing a merger with a blank-check company — and Dec. 25. The disclosures come as critics say President Trump’s financial entanglements and recent business ventures pose conflicts of interest for members of his administration. The stock awards were made public hours after Patel appeared for a Senate hearing on his nomination to lead the FBI, the top U.S. law enforcement agency. Trump Media, which operates the Truth Social app, on Wednesday announced it was expanding into financial services. Weeks after winning the presidential election, Trump transferred his majority stake in Trump Media to his revocable trust. Trump is the sole beneficiary of the trust, and Trump Jr. is its only trustee. The new SEC filings said that the shares awarded Tuesday to the six board members are restricted stock units that will vest in installments. Read more CNBC politics coverage Twenty-five percent of the awarded RSUs — about 6,487 shares per director — immediately vested, meaning they can be sold at any time. The paper value of those shares was nearly $195,000 as of Tuesday’s closing trade. The remaining 75% of the RSUs will vest in nine quarterly installments over two years beginning March 25. In preparation for the big announcement, we gave The Sims: Legacy Collection a whirl earlier this week and discovered that it holds up shockingly well–even if it is a bit brutal. “Bringing back our original Sims games where all the chaos first unfolded and the life simulation genre began is special for our team and a birthday treat for our players,” The Sims vice president and general manager Kate Gorman Revelli wrote in a press release. “Our players have been wishing to relive all the nostalgia, and we knew our birthday would be the perfect moment to celebrate with them and introduce The Sims to new players. We look forward to another exciting 25 years of The Sims as we continue empowering our community to reimagine all the different ways they play with life.” Both games, as well as the Birthday Bundle, are available to purchase on PC via Steam, the EA App, and the Epic Games Store. EA Play Pro members will have immediate access to the titles as a part of their subscription. In other Sims news, The Sims 4 players also have their own 25th anniversary celebrations to look forward to, as the game’s Blast from the Past event kicks off on February 4. The free, limited-time event is scheduled to run for four weeks and will reward diligent players with iconic items from the series, such as inflatable furniture and a gigantic, three-tiered “cake” that hides a spicy surprise. 24. The company awarded 25,946 stock shares each to Patel, Donald Trump Jr. and the president’s nominee for Education secretary, Linda McMahon, who all serve as Trump Media directors, the filings Thursday reveal. Trump Media did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment. Source link #Trump #Media #gifts #DJT #shares #FBI #pick #Kash #Patel Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  25. Keira Walsh: Chelsea sign England midfielder from Barcelona Keira Walsh: Chelsea sign England midfielder from Barcelona Chelsea have signed England midfielder Keira Walsh from Barcelona. The 27-year-old, who spent eight years at Manchester City before joining Barcelona, has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Chelsea. The Women’s Super League transfer deadline was on Thursday but the deal was only announced on Friday. Chelsea did not confirm the fee but it does not challenge the world record of around £900,000 that they paid for USA defender Naomi Girma earlier this month. “It’s unbelievable. I’m very happy to be here and very excited to get started,” Walsh said. “You look at the history of the trophies Chelsea have won and I’m an ambitious player and person, so for me, it is a good fit.” Despite Barca initially being unwilling to sell, it is believed Chelsea’s bid was accepted late on Wednesday before Walsh had a medical on Thursday. The 27-year-old, who left Manchester City to join Barcelona for a then world record fee of £400,000 in 2022, was keen to return to England to be close to family. Chelsea, who are top of the Women’s Super League and the only unbeaten side after 12 games, have had a long-standing interest in Walsh and have been looking to bolster their midfield since the summer. Manager Sonia Bompastor has received significant backing as the club bid to win the Champions League. Walsh has won the competition twice with Barcelona. While she has played for Barcelona in the group stages of the competition this season, she is still eligible to play for Chelsea from the quarter-finals onwards.
