MotoGP legend Rossi chasing Bathurst 12-hour podium
MotoGP legend Rossi chasing Bathurst 12-hour podium
Motorcycle GP legend Valentino Rossi is all for tackling the Bathurst 1000 – he just wants a 12-hour podium first.
The 45-year-old Italian returns to the iconic Mount Panorama track behind the wheel of a BMW M4 GT3 for the WRT team in his third bid at a top-three finish.
A podium finish at the international endurance race has so far remained elusive for Rossi, who looked poised to do so last year before falling short with a fifth-placed finish.
The seven-time world champion crossed the line in sixth in his 2023 debut.
“We can finish on the podium,” Rossi told AAP.
“The podium is always the target and especially last year, we were very strong.
“Unfortunately, the rain arrived. Usually, it doesn’t rain here so we were a bit unlucky.
“With the rain, unfortunately, we weren’t fast enough so we lost the podium position.
“That is extra motivation for coming back and for trying another time this year.”
A repeat of wet weather conditions is unlikely with a dry affair promised for Sunday’s race.
Sharing the car with Raffaele Marciello and Charles Weerts, Rossi’s biggest challenge will be fending off a contingent of homegrown Supercars drivers.
Queensland product Matt Campbell will be out to claim back-to-back wins, having also won the 2019 race.
Rossi closed out the opening day of the race weekend with the fourth-fastest time in practice three following a cameo from local wildlife.
******* sports car driver Maro Engel claimed the session with a lap time of two minutes and 3.8510 seconds, while Supercars ace Broc Feeney finished just two-hundredths of a second off Engel.
The 22-car field also includes reigning Supercars champion Will Brown, two-time Bathurst 1000 winner Chaz Mostert, Cam Waters, Thomas Randle and Jaxon Evans.
Tickford duo Waters and Randle share the #222 Scott Taylor Motorsport car with *********** motorsport legend Craig Lowndes.
Lowndes will be eyeing a third 12-hour victory to go with his seven Bathurst 1000 wins.
While his attentions remain focused on a podium breakthrough on Sunday, Rossi admits interest in taking to a Gen3 Supercar for a chance at a different type of Bathurst glory.
“This is interesting for me to try because it’s a big race,” Rossi said.
“It’s a big race and it’s the most famous race on this track.
“It’s in another part of the season and I have my program, so it’s difficult but maybe in the future, one time, why not?
“It’s a great race. Yes, I want to try one time.”
Qualifying gets underway on Saturday at 1.05pm (AEDT).

‘We will need to swap out hundreds of pieces’
‘We will need to swap out hundreds of pieces’
An *********** mining company made headlines when it placed a $400 million order for over 100 new all-electric mining equipment assets from a ******** manufacturer, as reported by Electrek.
Fortescue, an *********** mining company, purchased $400 million of mining equipment from Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group, the largest single equipment export deal in the ******** company’s history. The contract will bring electric mining equipment, including electric wheel loaders, electric dozers, and electric semitrucks, to Fortescue‘s operations within the next five years.
“We’re moving rapidly to decarbonize our Pilbara iron ore operations and eliminate our Scope 1 and 2 terrestrial emissions by 2030,” explained Fortescue Chief Executive Officer Dino Otranto. “To achieve this target, we will need to swap out hundreds of pieces of diesel mining equipment at the end of their life with zero emissions alternatives. As the global mining industry continues to evolve, we’re proud to be at the forefront of driving innovation in value adding green technology and showing the world that industry can decarbonize.”
The mining industry, which brings in over $845 billion annually, is becoming even more important. There is a higher demand for nickel, lithium, and phosphates for electric vehicles and other electric items. Fortescue’s mine also specializes in iron ore for steel.
Mining, however, can create land and air pollution and overuse of water. While mining for electric vehicles is less intrusive than mining for diesel and traditional gas-powered vehicles, using more electric equipment for mining can further reduce land and air pollution.
Other companies are moving to electric mining equipment, including Komatsu’s new fleet and Liebherr, which has worked with Fortescue to use self-driving electric haul trucks.
Watch now: CEO reveals form of energy that has ‘polled across political lines’ for over a decade
“Every new use of electric construction equipment is a win,” shared one commenter.
“The renewable and sustainable energy economy is the largest opportunity for business in our lifetime,” another commenter wrote.
“This company is putting pretty much every other mining company to shame,” someone else said. “Real Net Zero should be the target for every mining company.”

Nine-man Werder Bremen hold on to post win over Mainz
Nine-man Werder Bremen hold on to post win over Mainz
Werder Bremen held onto their first-half goal and survived the final minutes with nine men on the pitch to register a 1-0 Bundesliga win against in-form Mainz.
Bremen missed a penalty in the 12th minute on Friday as Marvin Ducksch’s spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Robin Zentner.
“Very infuriating,”was Zentner’s response to the penalty awarded after he miscontrolled a pass and fouled Romano Schmid when trying to recover the ball.
The keeper added: “I don’t know if that was a foul. Of course, bad contact from my part, but I get to the ball first.”
However, Bremen’s good start was rewarded two minutes later.
The ball was loose in the box after Mainz failed to clear a corner and Issa Kabore flicked the ball to Leonardo Bittencourt, who fired it into the roof of the net from close range.
It was a bittersweet evening for Bittencourt, however, as he limped off the pitch in the 33th with an apparent muscle injury.
Mainz had a big chance to grab at least a point in the 61st, but Danny Da Costa’s effort from outside of the area took a deflection off Bremen defender Anthony Jung and hit the post.
The game took a dramatic turn when Bremen had Niklas Stark and Marco Friedl sent off in stoppage-time.
Stark was shown a second yellow for delaying the game, while Friedl was in the same situation after he voiced his disapproval to the referee.
Bremen still managed to keep all three points, but coach Ole Werner was also given a red card after the final whistle.
Bittencourt said he doesn’t have “a bad feeling about” the injury, even though he couldn’t keep playing. “We have to wait. I hope it isn’t anything wild,” he told broadcasters DAZN.
Asked about the red card handed to coach Werner, he said: “I know our coach. He’s a calm person. I don’t believe he could have said something (to the referee) to deserve a red card.”
Mainz remain sixth and in the Conference League spot ahead of the matches at the weekend, while Bremen moved up to seventh.
Leaders Bayern Munich host promoted Holstein Kiel on Saturday, when Borussia Dortmund visit Heidenheim. Champions Bayer Leverkusen welcome Hoffenheim on Sunday.

77-Year-Old Dividend Investor Earning $270,000 a Year Shares Top 6 Stock Picks – ‘I Now Sleep Much Better at Night’
77-Year-Old Dividend Investor Earning $270,000 a Year Shares Top 6 Stock Picks – ‘I Now Sleep Much Better at Night’
Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below.
Dividend stocks are in focus as concerns for a higher-for-longer interest rate scenario rise and investors turn to stable companies to offset potential volatility. Dividend stocks also perform well when interest rates are going down. Ed Clissold, Chief U.S. Strategist at Ned Davis Research, said on CNBC a few months back that dividend stocks outperforming non-dividend-paying companies during the Fed’s easing cycles has been a “pretty consistent” trend over the past few decades.
But which dividend stocks can help you reach a stable and significant income? Let’s see a case study for ideas.
Don’t Miss:
Last week, someone asked old, experienced dividend investors for investment advice and ways to reduce tax liabilities and risks during income investing on r/Dividends, a Reddit discussion forum with over 660,000 followers. The post received over 90 comments, with many investors sharing their success stories and advice.
An investor said he had 50 years of experience in stock investing and shifted to dividend income about five years ago. He, 77, revealed in a separate comment that he raked in about $270,000 in retirement income.
“I now love actively managing my nest egg portfolio and sleep much better at night. I believe investment return, risk mitigation and minimal tax’s are directly proportional to investment knowledge and experience. Five years ago I was yielding about 8% with COVID discounted preferred dividend stocks. They appreciated and B grade or higher have not yielded 8% for several years so, researched other dividend stocks,” he said.
Trending: ‘Scrolling To UBI’ — Deloitte’s #1 fastest-growing software company allows users to earn money on their phones. You can invest today for just $0.26/share with a $1000 minimum.
Let’s discuss some of his portfolio’s notable dividend stocks and funds.
YieldMax NVDA Option Income Strategy ETF
The 77-year-old retired investor said he had YieldMax NVDA Option Income Strategy ETF (NVDY) in his portfolio “for fun.” He recommended the ETF to Redditors who have a higher risk appetite.
Story Continues
“I am doing a test investment with NVDY to learn more about YieldMax, their trading strategy and technology. Hoping for some longevity and no decay, not just short term speculation worries. NVDY is about the longest offering of their funds at two years, with the most assets at $1.3B,” he said in a separate comment.
YieldMax NVDA Option Income Strategy ETF (NVDY) makes money by selling call options on Nvidia. Recently, the ETF has gained popularity amid the buzz around Nvidia. The fund has a distribution rate of about 52%. NVDY suits investors who believe in Nvidia’s long-term potential but want to hedge against possible declines in the chipmaker’s shares.
Altria
Altria (MO) was a high-yield stock in the portfolio of the investor who collected about $270,000 a year in retirement income. Altria has a 7.8% dividend yield and over 50 years of consecutive payout increases. Last month, Bank of America increased its price target on the stock to $65 from $55. The firm believes lower corporate taxes, tariffs and tighter border controls under the new U.S. administration could bode well for the tobacco company.
JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF
The investor said he was “very happy” with his dividend ETFs, including the JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPQ). JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPQ) is a covered call ETF that distributes monthly dividend income. It invests in Nasdaq companies and generates extra income by selling call options. The fund has a dividend yield of more than 9%. In the December quarter, the JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF outperformed its benchmark, the Nasdaq 100 Index.

Guggenheim Strategic Opportunities Fund (GOF) exposes investors to fixed-income and debt securities. It invests in various credit instruments, including corporate bonds, asset-backed securities, mortgage-backed securities and other high-yield debt. However, it’s a risky investment because it invests in ungraded bonds, also known as junk bonds.

Trump says he’ll impose tariffs on oil and gas imports next month, and eventually on pharmaceuticals
Trump enacting tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China
Trump enacting 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, 10% tariff on China

President Trump on Friday said the U.S. will impose tariffs on oil and gas imports, likely next month, as well as tariffs on CHIP semiconductor technology and pharmaceuticals eventually.
“Eventually, we’re going to put tariffs on CHIPS,” the president told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday. We’re going to put tariffs on oil and gas.”
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office Friday, the president said he’ll add tariffs on oil and gas imports around Feb. 18, without citing specific countries.
That announcement comes the same day White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the U.S. will be imposing 25% tariffs on imports from both Mexico and Canada, making good on a longtime threat from the president.
Mr. Trump on Friday said the time for negotiation has passed.
All these tariffs will be stacked on top of any existing tariffs, he said.
The president also said he’ll impose additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, as well as on copper eventually. The president said imposing tariffs on copper would take a little longer.
The president also said he plans to impose tariffs on pharmaceuticals and “all forms of medicine.”
Experts warn that steep new tariffs on imports could cause U.S. economic growth to slow and inflation to flare, noting that companies in the U.S. are likely to pass on the added costs to consumers.

At least 700 killed since Sunday, says UN
At least 700 killed since Sunday, says UN
The UN says at least 700 people have been killed in intense fighting in Goma, the largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, since Sunday.
UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said 2,800 people have been injured, as M23 rebels – backed by Rwanda – captured the capital of North Kivu province.
The rebels are now reported to be moving south towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu.
The conflict in eastern DR Congo dates back to the 1990s but has rapidly escalated in recent weeks.
M23, which is made up of ethnic Tutsis, say they are fighting for ********* rights, while DR Congo’s government says the Rwanda-backed rebels are seeking control of the eastern region’s vast mineral wealth.
On Friday, Dujarric said the casualty figures came from an assessment made by the World Health Organization and its partners, alongside the DR Congo’s government, between Sunday and Thursday.
The UN spokesman also warned the death toll would rise further.
In an attempt to halt M23’s progress, the DR Congo military has set up a defensive line on the road between Goma and Bukavu, according to the AFP news agency.
Hundreds of civilian volunteers have been enlisted to defend Bukavu.
One young man told the AFP: “I am ready to die for my country.”
Jean-Jacques Purusi Sadiki, the governor of South Kivu – the province M23 are marching on – told Reuters news agency the government army and its allies were holding back the rebels, though that claim has not been independently verified.
Earlier this week, M23 vowed to continue its offensive until it reached the capital Kinshasa, about 2,600km (1,600 miles) to the west.
Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, the country’s foreign minister, told the BBC that Rwanda was illegally occupying her country and attempting to orchestrate regime change.
Wagner said the international community had allowed Rwandan President Paul Kagame decades of impunity and failed to hold him accountable for violating international law.
Rwanda’s government spokeswoman Yolande Makolo denied the accusation, saying the country’s troops were only deployed to prevent the conflict spilling over to its territory.
“We’re not interested in war, we’re not interested in annexation, we’re not interested in regime change,” Makolo told the BBC’s Newsday programme.
UN experts estimated last year that Rwanda had between 3,000 and 4,000 troops operating alongside the M23 in eastern DR Congo.
On Friday, the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) regional bloc declared its support for DR Congo at a crisis summit in Zimbabwe.
In a statement, the 16-member group “reaffirmed its solidarity and unwavering commitment to continue supporting the DRC in its pursuit of safeguarding its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
Sadc has sent peacekeeping troops, primarily from South Africa, to DR Congo to combat armed groups like the M23 and restore peace in the mineral-rich region after decades of unrest.
Sixteen soldiers from southern African countries have been killed in clashes with the M23 around Goma in the past week.
The fighting has also worsened the humanitarian crisis in eastern DR Congo.
Shelley Thakral, from the UN’s World Food Programme, said the city’s residents were running out of food, clean water and medical supplies.
“The supply chain has really been strangled at the moment if you think about land access, air access, when everything is closed down,” she told AFP.
Since the start of 2025, more than 400,000 people have been forced from their homes, according to the UN’s refugee agency.
DR Congo is Africa’s second-largest country – about two-thirds the size of Western Europe – and borders nine different countries.
Previous conflicts in the country during the 1990s drew in several neighbours and were dubbed Africa’s World Wars.

Toyota RAV4 who? BYD importer slams Australia’s best-selling SUV
Toyota RAV4 who? BYD importer slams Australia’s best-selling SUV
BYD’s local distributor isn’t mincing words about the competitiveness of its Sealion 6 mid-sized SUV, and has gone after the segment’s best seller.
“The thing is it’s a fantastic car. I’m happy to go on record: it’s a far better car than a Toyota RAV4,” the founder and executive chairman of BYD’s *********** distributor EVDirect, Luke Todd, told CarExpert.
“The RAV4 is a regurgitation of 15-, 10-year-old technology, just with a new wrapper.
“BYD Sealion 6 technology is advanced technology, now.
“We’re very happy to be compared. What I encourage people that are looking to buy, looking at a Toyota RAV4, [is to] go and test drive the Sealion 6, test drive the RAV4, and make your own decision.”
Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.
Camera IconSealion 6 Premium Credit: CarExpert
With the introduction of a new entry-level Essential grade earlier this month, the Sealion 6 range now opens at $42,990 before on-road costs.
That gets you a 160kW/300Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain with a claimed 92km of electric-only range on the NEDC cycle and fuel economy of 1.1L/100km.
The Essential’s price tag is just a few hundred dollars off that of the entry-level Toyota RAV4 GX Hybrid, which costs $42,260 before on-roads.
That gets you a 160kW 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain with claimed combined fuel consumption of 4.7L/100km.
Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert
However, while the RAV4 can run on pure electric power at low speeds, it can’t be driven purely in electric mode across greater distances.
Since 2022, BYD has only produced plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs). Toyota, in contrast, still doesn’t offer any PHEVs here – including the PHEV version of the RAV4 offered in numerous overseas markets – and offers just one EV.
The ******** carmaker was a pioneer in PHEV technology, but initially arrived here only with EVs.
It took until 2024 for BYD to launch its first PHEV here: the Sealion 6. This was followed by the Shark 6 ute, local deliveries of which commenced in January.
Mr Todd says PHEVs play an important role in BYD’s lineup.
Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert
“Utopia is somebody that has the ability to charge with solar, free fuel, full EV – that’s utopia. But the reality is, for many Australians, that’s not achievable,” he said.
Despite only being launched mid-year, the Sealion 6 only narrowly missed out on being BYD’s best-selling model in Australia in 2024.
BYD delivered 6198 examples, just shy of the 6393 units recorded for the electric Seal sedan.
The ******** brand is launching a similarly sized but fully electric SUV in February, called the Sealion 7.

Mountain in New Zealand Gets Same Legal Rights as a Person
Mountain in New Zealand Gets Same Legal Rights as a Person
The second-highest mountain on New Zealand’s North Island, Taranaki Maunga (Mountain), has been given the same legal rights as a human. Credits: Dave Young, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons.
Taranaki Maunga, the second-highest mountain on New Zealand’s North Island, has been granted the same legal rights as humans.
This is the third natural landmark in the country to gain the same rights and privileges as a human being. The mountain’s new rights are tied to its importance to Māori culture and have been a long-awaited move, as the indigenous people consider it an ancestor.
Taranaki Mountain lies on the North Island’s west coast and is one of the most symmetrical volcanic cones in the world. It is also New Zealand’s most climbed mountain and is a highly visited tourist destination.
Taranaki Mountain is important to New Zealand
“Today, Taranaki, our maunga [mountain], our maunga tupuna [ancestral mountain], is released from the shackles, the shackles of injustice, of ignorance, of hate,” said Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, co-leader of political party Te Pāti Māori (the Māori Party).
The granting of legal person rights for the landmark means that it cannot be harmed and must be treated with the utmost respect. The same legal protection was given to Te Urewara in 2014 and the Whanganui River in 2017.
“When we think about the concept of personhood, what we are doing is putting in place a very Māori Indigenous concept into Western law,” said Jamie Tuuta, Chief negotiator for Taranaki Mounga. “When we view them as being ancestors … what we ultimately look to do is to see behavior change.”
The difference between Taranaki and the other landmarks granted human rights is that it will be the only one referred to solely by its Māori name. This means that its former name, Mount Egmont, given under colonial rule by explorer James Cook in the 18th century, is relegated to history. Subsequently, the surrounding peaks around Taranaki will also have their Māori names restored.
The settlement is the latest in a series of moves seen as reparations for breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi over time. This treaty officially established New Zealand as a country and granted Indigenous people specific rights to land and resources. Indeed, the settlement’s announcement came with an apology for taking Taranaki Maunga and a million acres of land from the local Māori population in the 1860s.
Hundreds of Taranaki Iwi members traveled to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, to be there for the final bill reading, witnessing a promise made in 2016 to designate human rights to Taranaku to be put into action.
“Today we affirm what we have always known – our [mountain] is, and never was, a crown asset – it is our [ancestor], the living, breathing embodiment of our identity … as Taranaki,” said Ngarewa-Packer.

Destiny 2: Heresy Will Be Missing Some Voice Content Because Of The Ongoing Actors Strike
Destiny 2: Heresy Will Be Missing Some Voice Content Because Of The Ongoing Actors Strike
Last summer, SAG-AFTRA called for a voice actors strike against video game publishers over numerous issues including AI protections. Although the union has reached deals with a handful of publishers, the strike is still ongoing. Now, Bungie has confirmed that the upcoming Destiny 2: Heresy expansion will include scenes that are missing spoken dialogue because a deal with the actors has yet to be reached.
In an update on Bungie’s official site, the developer noted that “certain voice lines” were not recorded because of the actors strike. In those scenes, Destiny 2 will enable subtitles by default in order to carry the narrative forward despite the missing audio. The update also notes that any Heresy activities that are missing voice overs will feature an on-screen warning before starting. However, the update doesn’t address whether those lines will be recorded when the strike ends.
Over on Bluesky, a voice actor going by Orchid shared their response to the news by reiterating the actors’ desire to “get a fair deal” that addresses their AI concerns.
For everyone complaining: we’re still on strike. We would like to work, but until we get a fair deal, our concerns regarding AI addressed, etc, we will not. I’m sorry this affects your games, but it also affects our ability to pay our rent and grocery bills.

Destiny 2 isn’t the only game being affected by the strikes. Hideo Kojima has disclosed that his upcoming titles–including OD and Physint–are also unable to record the dialogue they need from their performers.
As for Destiny 2, the Heresy expansion will begin on February 4 with a return to the Dreadnaught. Heresy will also feature a new dungeon, Sundered Doctrine, as well as a collaboration with Star Wars that introduce gear, armor ornaments, accessories, emotes, and finishers that are inspired by some of the Empire’s fiercest warriors including the Death Troopers and the Imperial Guards.

Federal judge temporarily blocks Trump administration’s funding freeze
Federal judge temporarily blocks Trump administration’s funding freeze
Washington — A federal judge in Rhode Island temporarily blocked the Trump administration from freezing federal assistance after a group of 22 states and the District of Columbia challenged a memo from the White House budget office ordering a pause of federal funding.
U.S. District Chief Judge John McConnell of Rhode Island on Friday granted the request for a temporary restraining order sought by the Democrat-led states, which had argued that the actions from the Office of Management and Budget violated federal law and the Constitution.
McConnell’s order was expected, as he had signaled following a hearing Wednesday that he was inclined to issue the temporary pause of the Trump administration’s directive. The judge said in his decision that the Office of Management and Budget’s actions are likely unconstitutional and violate federal law.
“Are there some aspects of the pause that might be legal and appropriate constitutionally for the Executive to take? The court imagines there are, but it is equally sure that there are many instances in the Executive Orders’ wide-ranging, all-encompassing, and ambiguous ‘pause’ of critical funding that are not,” McConnell found.
The judge wrote that the budget office did not cite any legal authority that allowed it to unilaterally suspend the flow of federal funds to states and other entities and said “no federal law would authorize the executive’s unilateral action here.”
“The states have set forth facts showing that the executive’s abrupt ‘pause’ in potentially trillions of dollars of federal funding will cause a ripple effect that would directly impact the states and other’s ability to provide and administer vital services and relief to their citizens,” McConnell wrote.
New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is part of the lawsuit, cheered the court’s order and said the president cannot unilaterally stop congressional spending commitments.
“This administration’s reckless plan to block federal funding has already caused chaos, confusion, and conflict throughout our country,” she said in a statement. “In the short time since this policy was announced, families have been cut off from childcare services, essential Medicaid funds were disrupted, and critical law enforcement efforts were put in jeopardy.”
The Democrat-led states filed their lawsuit earlier this week in response to a memo from the Office of Management and Budget that ordered agencies to temporarily pause “to the extent permitted by law” grant, loan or federal financial assistance programs that were implicated by Mr. Trump’s executive orders. The executive orders listed include those involving immigration, energy, diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, programs, and gender ideology.
The memo was issued by Matthew Vaeth, acting director of the Office of Management and Budget, who said the freeze was set to take effect by 5 p.m. Tuesday. Its full scope was not clear and sparked confusion and chaos around the country as states and nonprofits scrambled to determine whether they would be affected. Lawmakers, too, fielded calls from constituents and organizations in their states seeking answers about whether they would be cut off from federal dollars.
The memo also prompted immediate legal action from the Democrat-led states and a group of nonprofit organizations, who filed a separate challenge in Washington, D.C. A federal judge there swiftly convened a hearing on a request from the nonprofits to temporarily block enforcement of the freeze, and agreed Tuesday to issue a brief pause to fully consider the matter.
One day later, the Office of Management and Budget issued a new, two-line memo saying that the earlier directive had been rescinded.
But questions continued to arise after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that only the budget office’s memo had been walked back and the broader halting of federal assistance would remain in effect.
“This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze. It is simply a rescission of the OMB memo,” she wrote on social media Wednesday. “Why? To end any confusion created by the court’s injunction. The president’s EO’s on federal funding remain in full force and effect, and will be rigorously implemented.”
Following Leavitt’s post, the Justice Department argued that the matter before McConnell was moot. But the judge said in his order that “the evidence shows that the alleged rescission of the OMB Directive was in name-only and may have been issued simply to defeat the jurisdiction of the court.”
“The substantive effect of the directive carries on,” he wrote. “Messaging from the White House and agencies proves this point.”

Downtown Raleigh puppy store closes with note from owner to critics
Downtown Raleigh puppy store closes with note from owner to critics
A controversial **** shop in downtown Raleigh has closed just weeks after opening.
A handwritten sign on a table announced the news from the window of Petopia, the store that had opened on Martin Street in January.
“Petopia is closed forever,” it said. “Congratulations.”
Owner Jacklyn Barefoot did not respond to a phone call or text message from The News & Observer seeking comment.
The store, which sold Aussiedoodle puppies for up to $6,000, faced opposition even before it opened.
A petition calling it a puppy mill gained more than 15,000 signatures and led to at least one protest, with more planned.
Puppy mills are “inhumane high-volume dog breeding facilities that churn out puppies for profit,” according to the Humane Society of the United States.
But Barefoot, who bred the puppies she sold, rebutted the claim.
“I am, honestly, the definition of everything that’s not a puppy mill,” she said, in a previous interview. “When I think puppy mills, I think of bad conditions for the puppies, bad conditions for mom, dad, like all of that. I don’t think any love and affection actually goes into a puppy mill, which is primarily the difference that separates me and why I wanted to do something different.”
Animal advocates applauded the news on social media.
“We did it,” said N.C. Animal Advocates United on Facebook. “After more than a week of being closed, the clearing out of the store space, insider intel shared with NCAAU and now this sign, it’s official. Pressure campaigns WORK. Progress for animals can be won when we come together as a community…”
Paisley and Stella, eight-week-old Aussiedoodle puppies, cuddle in an enclosure at Petopia in downtown Raleigh, N.C. on Tuesday, Jan 14, 2025.
Why are NC stores allowed to sell puppies?
New York banned the retail ***** of dogs, cats and rabbits in December. The ban does not affect breeders’ direct sales or animal shelter and rescue group adoptions.
Petopia was allowed to operate under Raleigh’s downtown zoning because selling puppies is an acceptable type of retail, according to Patrick Young, the city’s planning director. And animals may stay overnight, though Barefoot said she took her puppies home each day.
State law prohibits municipalities like Raleigh from regulating what types of retail can move into a business. It’s an issue the city has run into before.
In 2021 and 2022, the Raleigh City Council attempted to allow “accessory commercial units” in residential areas.
“I wanted to make it easier for folks to operate neighborhood based businesses, coffee shops and small grocery stores or co ops and bakeries, things that people need,” Raleigh City Council member Jonathan Lambert-Melton said in an interview with The N&O. “[So] that they could walk to and support local and not have to get in their cars and contribute to traffic and climate change. You know, all the things that we’re trying to reduce through our other work.”
It’s a frustration, he said, to not be able to specify the types of retail that can be allowed.
“There is just not a lot of flexibility for us,” he said at the City Council’s retreat. “I looked at it more as what can we provide to the public, but because there is no limitation we can’t say, ‘You can only open a corner coffee shop in your neighborhood because we can’t promise it won’t be a corner gun shop or vape shop.’”

Second federal judge blocks Trump funding freeze

A federal judge on Friday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from freezing federal loans, grants and other financial assistance to 22 states, barring the Republican for now from implementing a policy that had stoked confusion and fears about critical government-funded services being disrupted.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge John McConnell in Providence, Rhode Island came at the behest of Democratic attorneys generals from 22 states and the District of Columbia and despite the White House saying it was rescinding Monday’s memo from its budget office detailing the policy.
The temporary restraining order will be in place until further order of the court while the judge considers whether to issue a longer preliminary injunction.
The memo that prompted the litigation came from the acting director of the Office of Management and Budget and had detailed a sweeping directive to halt funding as part of Trump’s broader effort to overhaul the federal government.
Trump has already issued orders that aim to stop foreign aid, freeze hiring, shutter diversity programs across dozens of agencies, and reclassify federal workers to make them easier to fire while offering financial incentives to millions more to resign to shrink the government’s size.
States received $1.11 trillion in grants in fiscal year 2022, the most recent year for which data is available, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts, amounting to 36.4% of the states’ combined total revenue.

The Democratic state attorneys general said the memo from Matthew Vaeth, OMB’s acting director, jeopardized over $1 trillion in grants states receive from the federal government to help pay for health care, education, transportation and other services.
The memo directed that funds be put on hold while the administration reviewed grants and loans to ensure they are aligned with Trump’s priorities, including executive orders he signed ending diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
The states argued that the White House policy failed to account for the harm it would impose on grant recipients and violated the U.S. Constitution by usurping Congress’s power to decide how federal money is spent.
A 1974 law called the Impoundment Control Act established procedures designed to restrict a president from not spending money appropriated by Congress. Trump, though, has said he believes the president has the power to withhold money if he disagrees.
State attorneys general and advocacy groups representing non-profits, small businesses and healthcare professionals raced to court on Tuesday to challenge the freeze, and a judge in Washington, D.C., put it on hold shortly before it was to take effect to allow her to consider one of the two court cases.
That order, an administrative stay issued by U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan, is set to expire on Monday afternoon. She has scheduled a hearing for that day on whether she should likewise issue a temporary restraining order.

Amid the litigation, the White House tried to clarify the pause, saying it would not impact Social Security or Medicare payments or assistance provided directly to individuals and only implicated programs covered by Trump’s executive orders.
OMB then fully withdrew its memo on Wednesday, shortly before a hearing in a lawsuit by the 22 states and District of Columbia before McConnell, an appointee of Democratic former President Barack Obama. The administration said with the memo now rescinded, there was nothing to sue over.
But Sarah Rice, a lawyer with Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha’s office, told McConnell during the hearing that all the administration had done was rescind a “piece of paper,” not the underlying policy.
She pointed to a post on X by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shortly before the hearing concerning the memo’s withdrawal that declared: “This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze.”
“The policy has not changed and that policy to sum it up is freeze first, ask questions later,” Rice said in court.

Early spring or more winter? Meteorologist’s 2025 prediction for NYC
Early spring or more winter? Meteorologist’s 2025 prediction for NYC
The Brief
Can New York City expect six more weeks of winter – or early spring?
FOX 5 NY Meteorologist Nick Gregory is breaking down his 2025 mid-winter weather outlook.
Gregory discusses what to expect for the rest of winter, including how many more inches of snow we’ll record.
NEW YORK CITY – Can New York City expect six more weeks of winter – or early spring?
In his 2025 mid-winter weather outlook ahead of Groundhog Day on Sunday, FOX 5 NY Meteorologist Nick Gregory breaks down what to expect for the rest of winter, including how many more inches of snow we’ll record and what the beginning of spring has in store.
He covers:
NYC winter so far
By the numbers
Gregory says December temperatures were just “a touch below average”, but pretty close to where the Big Apple should be at this point. As far as snow goes, New York City has seen:
December: 2.8″ / Average is 4.9″
January: 3.0″ / Average is 7.3″
Total: 5.8″ / Average is 12.2″
How much snow can we expect for the remainder of the winter?
Local perspective
By February, New York City normally records about 14 inches of snow, so we’re still a little behind. But snow lovers – Nick’s got news for you.
Before the winter is over, Gregory still expects around 7-12″ more of snow for parts of South Jersey, New York City and Long Island.
“As we go through the next month or two, we’ll still see an active northern jet stream, bringing storms from time to time that could regenerate along the coast, and that’s where we get into that potential snowstorm or rain/snow event for the city and more snow that will be happening as you move further inland,” Gregory said.
Meanwhile, parts of North Jersey, Hudson Valley and Connecticut could see 12-17″ more of snow.
“Further north, I think you’re still going to see those higher amounts of snow as we go into the forecast,” Gregory said.
When is the first day of spring? What’s your spring 2025 outlook?
What’s next
Spring officially begins on March 20 at 5:01 a.m.
Gregory says the spring forecast will be warmer than average, but “probably near average as we get into precipitation.” The first 60-degree day of the year usually lands on April 10 for us. (Fingers crossed we see one sooner than that!)
We shall see if the groundhog sees his shadow or not. (Gregory predicts he will see his shadow)
How accurate is Punxsutawney Phil?
Dig deeper
In determining the accuracy of Punxsutawney Phil, NOAA compared national temperatures in the six weeks after Feb. 2 over the last 10 years.
According to the data, Phil got it right last year in 2024, calling for an early spring. But over the last 10 years, the groundhog has been correct only two other times: 2020 and 2015, resulting in an accuracy rate of 30%.
According to NOAA since 1887, Phil has predicted more winter 107 times, and an early spring just 20 times, with 10 years without recorded data.
Punxatawney Phil’s prediction record last 10 years. (FOX Weather)
The Stormfax Almanac website, which claims to have tracked Phil’s predictions since 1887, found that Punxsutawney Phil’s overall accuracy to be 39%.
Will Punxsutawney Phil be right this year?
As for 2025, the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction center is forecasting above average temperatures across the southern part of the country in the week after Groundhog Day, while average and slightly colder than average temperatures will stick around for the northern tier.
So, for New York City, that means Phil shouldn’t see his shadow in order to match his prediction with climatologists.
Climate Prediction Center Temperature Outlook. (FOX Weather)
February is also bringing a weather pattern change. According to the FOX Forecast Center, a westward shift in the jet stream will allow warmer temperatures from the Gulf to spread across the eastern half of the country.
