After earnings sent some well-known companies diverging in Friday’s session, Jessica Inskip, director of investor research at StockBrokers.com, has ideas on how to think about these names going forward. Inskip joined CNBC’s “Three-Stock Lunch” segment to discuss Exxon Mobil , Deckers Outdoor and Atlassian . Here’s what she had to say about each: Exxon Mobil Exxon Mobil shares slid 2.5% after fourth-quarter revenue came in below expectations, according to LSEG. That overshadowed the company’s beat on earnings per share. Inskip said investors should be concerned if the stock does not find support at around $106.84. “I actually have a bearish view on this,” Inskip said. “I think it’s finding neutrality.” The oil stock is now down nearly 1% for 2025. But the majority of analysts polled by LSEG have buy ratings, with an average price target suggesting shares can rise more than 21% over the next year. Deckers Outdoor The shoe manufacturer plummeted 20% on Friday. While the Ugg and Hoka maker beat expectations on both lines for the fiscal third quarter, its full-year revenue guidance came in a hair short of analyst expectations, per LSEG. “It broke its bullish trading cycle, and that’s also turned neutral,” Inskip said, later adding that she’s “not bullish on this one.” She said to watch the 13-week moving average of around $185 for support. But Inskip said she will have a sell signal if it breaks below that level. Shares are now down more than 12% for 2025, putting the stock on track to notch its first negative calendar year since 2015. But after this sell-off, Wall Street’s average price target forecasts shares rallying more than 24%, according to LSEG. The majority of analysts polled by the firm have buy ratings. Atlassian Unlike the other two names, Atlassian surged nearly 15% to a new 52-week high. The tech company beat expectations of analysts surveyed by LSEG on both lines. “I think this is a beautiful, beautiful chart,” Inskip said of Atlassian’s stock chart. “I love pulling this up today,” she added. “It brought me so much joy. This is in a bullish trading cycle.” Atlassian shares are now up 26% for the new year. While the majority of analysts polled by LSEG have a buy rating, they expect shares to pull back by more than 4%.

I’m an American spending my retirement living in dozens of countries. There’s one thing I wish I’d known before I started.
I’m an American spending my retirement living in dozens of countries. There’s one thing I wish I’d known before I started.
As Americans, I wish we’d known how much Schengen rules could impact our travels in Europe.
Now that we get the rules, we use a strategy to avoid overstaying our welcome in select places.
My wife and I have been living as full-time nomads since 2019 and have already visited more than 43 different countries.
Our lifestyle seems dreamy, but we’ve experienced numerous issues along the way — and many of the biggest have been related to visas.
As Americans, we’re fortunate to have one of the strongest passports in the world, and many countries have not required us to present a visa upon entry.
However, I wish I’d known before we began our journey that there are some especially strict travel limitations in Europe that could complicate our plans.
Schengen rules make it difficult for foreigners to spend months traveling through Europe
We’ve spent our retirement living in many different countries so far. Norm Bour
As Americans, we knew we could not spend more than 90 days in a row visiting countries like Italy or Germany. However, we soon learned that simply hopping from one European country to another in 90-day stints wasn’t an option or workaround to that rule, either.
This is, in part, due to Schengen rules: Non-European Union citizens can only stay in the Schengen zone for up to 90 days within a 180-day *******
The Schengen zone consists of mostly European Union countries that share similar criteria for visitors. Citizens within those countries can freely travel across others in the zone without being subject to border checks.
The Schengen zone includes 29 European countries, including France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
For many travelers staying in Europe for less than 90 days, these rules are pretty irrelevant. However, for us, this meant a lot of European countries were off-limits for long trips.
We knew that if we wanted to stay in Europe long-term, we’d need a residency permit.
After getting a visa proved difficult, we began planning our trips around the Schengen rules
Many countries offer multiple variations of residency permits, like digital-nomad visas or retirement visas. However, visa applications can be complicated and take months (or even years) to get approved.
At one point, we attempted to get retirement visas in Spain. After months of preparing and filing paperwork and spending a fair amount of money, our application has still not been approved.
Eventually, we decided to stop waiting for a visa. Instead, we would do the “Schengen shuffle,” a common strategy among expats that involves strategically entering and leaving the Schengen zone without overstaying your welcome.
For example, if we’ve been exploring Spain and Italy for almost 90 days, we’d then spend months traveling to places outside the Schengen zone, like Malaysia or Bosnia, before returning to any country in it.
Fortunately, as nomads, we’re very flexible — and we’ve gotten good at doing the “shuffle.”
However, it’s worth noting that the “shuffle” comes with risks, and violating Schengen rules can have severe legal consequences ranging from jail time and deportation to bans and fines.
Until we get a residency permit in Europe, we’ll continue to stay on top of visa rules in every country we visit, as all travelers should.
After all, the rules can (and do) change often.

‘Superbook Japan’ Changes Lives of Young Viewer and His Single Mom
‘Superbook Japan’ Changes Lives of Young Viewer and His Single Mom
KAWAGOE, Japan – The original Superbook first hit Japan’s airwaves in 1981. Since its debut and success, CBN has televised the updated animated ****** series, reaching a new generation of Japanese children. One of them is 11-yr-old Eisuke Kakinuma. At five years old, Eisuke first watched Superbook at the Nozomi Christian pre-school in 2018 – the year the new version aired in Japan.
Eisuke said, “I really like Superbook because I can relate with Chris. In the story of David, at first, Chris was afraid of the big crowd and did not play his guitar well. But when he played his guitar for God, he won the audition. In my case, I was not good in origami and some kids told me to just quit. But I did not give up and God helped me. Now, I am good at it.”
“I asked my Mom to buy the DVDs for me but she said to just watch on television because she did not have extra money.”
Back then, Eisuke’s mother, Rieko Kakinuma, struggled financially as a single parent. Rieko shared, “When he sees other families in his school and the children go to their fathers, he asks why he doesn’t have that kind of family. I apologize to him and he tells me it’s not my fault. He just asks God why.”
Watching the program together, mother and son are learning many life lessons. “Superbook has made it easier for us to understand the Word of God and grow in our faith. Eisuke told me he realized that God allowed our situation to know Him more. And by watching Superbook, he learned how much God loves him,” Rieko said. Eisuke testified, “Before watching Superbook, I know there is a God, but I am not sure if I should believe Jesus. But through Superbook, I learned that Jesus died on the cross and forgave my sins, so I can go to heaven.”
God also granted Eisuke’s desire for his own DVDs. He won Superbook’s quiz contest and got the Season 1 set as his prize.

His mom encouraged him to make a Superbook album which also serves as his journal.
Both Eisuke and Rieko are grateful for the life they now have with God at the center.
Rieko told CBN News, “When Eisuke was born, I did not have faith in God. But when we went to the Christian preschool, we came to know God, I learned about Jesus and I accepted Jesus Christ. I discovered my purpose, too, and now I am a licensed teacher in the same preschool.”
And because Mom and son are big Superbook fans, they have completed all five seasons of Superbook DVDs.
The CBN News team visited Eisuke and Rieko in their home to surprise them with Superbook souvenir items. Eisuke eagerly showed his collection of Superbook DVDs and appreciated the gifts he received for being a huge Superbook fan.

Marvel Rivals “Kraken” Boss and “Infinity Crisis” Mode Spotted in Data Files; Here’s an Early Look
Marvel Rivals “Kraken” Boss and “Infinity Crisis” Mode Spotted in Data Files; Here’s an Early Look
Obscure_Observer1d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )
@CrashMania
“I wonder why it is that MS always hide the profit numbers of their xbox division then, and only report on revenue, interesting.”
According to leaked documents from FTC *prior* ABK´s acquisition by Microsoft, Sony was the third most profitable company between Nintendo (Most profitable) and Microsoft (second most profitable).
Look it up
“This was due to COD exclusivity, Jim crapped his pants over this, appears it was for nothing I guess as MS clearly need the 64% revenue from playstation players as the floundering console sales and gamepass numbers weren’t enough to sustain it.”
Good for Microsoft they now have the Playstation player base as well as every other platform out there. Our day one games on Game Pass are secured.
“MS have done also done this while waving 80 billion expenditure in front of their faces, why does the biggest and most profitable gaming company publisher in your words need to lay off thousands of devs and shut studios also?”
No game (as far I remember) got canceled at XGS not even Redfall. Microsoft did f* up with Tango IMO. Most layoffs were due restructure as no game in actual development was affected.
“You know what I find funny, you zealots keep raving about cancelled live service games, but most playstation gamers were celebrating this.”
Then next thing they´ll do is complain whenever Sony decides and takes their games elsewhere, because those cancelled games took several years of dedicated developers lives and cost billions to produce to just end up in the trash.
You know that all that money and time won´t pay itself and the Playstation userbase will be the ones who will suffer the most with the inevitable game drought from Playstation first party output, which Microsoft will gladly benefit from.
“PS gamers completely rejected slop like Concord, and I imagine fairgame$ isn’t gonna fair much better, but xbots will defend crap like Redfall and ignore Hellblade flopping, still having no numbers for Indiana Jones, other than it charting lower than the 3 month old Astro Bot during it’s month of release.”
Nobody defended Redfall after the release. You´re making stuff up. Hellblade II is a great game 81 Metascore based on 100 critics review. The game definitely did not live up to the hype but its a great game nontheless. Indiana Jones is already a GOTY contender and highly praised for both critics AND gamers.
As for how much it sold MS won´t tell you or me as they don´t reveal sales for a long time!
But hey, since you´re brought up sales figures… how many copies sold for Horizon Forbidden West Remastered, LEGO Horizon and Until Dawn? Any official numbers from Sony regarding those games sales? No, I guess not! Those games are major flops but you´d just ignored it. And don´t even get me started on Concord.
“So who really wins? You can talk about revenue or whatever as much as you want, at the end of the day PS5 gamers are getting more and better games, regardless of who is publishing them, no amount of coping and goalpost moving will change that.”
Sony won the console battle. Microsoft won the war! Microsoft is the biggest and most profitable gaming company in the world and there´s nothing you can do about it.
As for Playstation you can wait for Xbox games to land on Playstation at some point in future. We´re getting those games NOW day one on Gamepass so we don´t have to pay as others are paying to fund our games!

BioWare Now Has Less Than 100 People Working At The Studio
BioWare Now Has Less Than 100 People Working At The Studio
·
·
January 31, 2025
BioWare’s headcount is . According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the company now sits at less than 100 employees after having over 200 people just two years ago.
The report says that a number of employees who were put “temporarily” on new teams were informed that those moves were permanent. No longer were they BioWare employees helping out in a different area.
Schreier’s report also corroborates Insider Gaming’s exclusive report that “dozens” of people were let go as part of this wave of layoffs at the studio.
“If they want to work at BioWare again in the future, they would have to look for job openings and re-apply,” Schreier writes. He adds that, for now at least, a small team will work on the next game in the Mass Effect series. This team is being led by “company veteran who oversaw the development on the original trilogy as well as on 2019’s Anthem”. The goal is to then expand as needed later on in production.
As sources told Insider Gaming after the memo from BioWare was released, there is still an internal evaluation being done in order to see where things can be improved.
Neither EA nor BioWare have responded to multiple requests for comment on the state of things at the studio.
What do you make of BioWare being under 100 employees right now? Let us know down below, and join more discussions in the official Insider Gaming forums.

How can you snag a rate under 7%?
How can you snag a rate under 7%?
Mortgage rates have decreased for the second week in a row, but the drops aren’t very impressive. According to Freddie Mac, the 15-year fixed interest rate is down by four basis points to 6.12% — and the 30-year fixed rate has ticked down by just one basis point to 6.95%.
It looks like 30-year rates are going to hover around 7% for the first several months of 2025. So, how do you get the lowest rate possible — hopefully one under 7%?
First, try to get your finances in order. See if you can improve your credit score or put money from your tax refund toward a down payment. Second, shop around with three or four mortgage lenders. Exploring your options will help you see which ones offer the lowest rates, the lowest fees, and the type of mortgage loan you need.

Dig deeper: 5 strategies for getting the lowest mortgage rate possible
Have questions about buying, owning, or selling a house? Submit your question to Yahoo’s panel of Realtors using this Google form.
Here are the current mortgage rates, according to the latest Zillow data:
30-year fixed: 6.58%
20-year fixed: 6.32%
15-year fixed: 5.87%
5/1 ARM: 6.91%
7/1 ARM: 6.95%
30-year VA: 6.00%
15-year VA: 5.45%
5/1 VA: 6.04%
Remember, these are the national averages and rounded to the nearest hundredth.
Learn more: Should you lock in a mortgage rate?
These are today’s mortgage refinance rates, according to the latest Zillow data:
30-year fixed: 6.62%
20-year fixed: 6.22%
15-year fixed: 5.95%
5/1 ARM: 7.20%
7/1 ARM: 7.10%
30-year VA: 6.02%
15-year VA: 5.65%
5/1 VA: 5.95%
30-year FHA: 6.24%
15-year FHA: 5.90%
Again, the numbers provided are national averages rounded to the nearest hundredth. Mortgage refinance rates are often higher than rates when you buy a house, although that’s not always the case.
Learn more: Want to refinance your mortgage? Here are 7 home refinance options.
This embedded content is not available in your region.
Yahoo Finance has a free mortgage payment calculator. Use the calculator to see how various mortgage rates and loan terms could affect your monthly payments.
Our calculator also considers homeowners insurance, property taxes, and other expenses that affect your monthly payment. This will give you a better idea of what you’d realistically pay in a month than if you just look at the mortgage principal and interest.
A mortgage interest rate is a fee for borrowing money from your lender, expressed as a percentage. You can choose from two types of rates: fixed or adjustable.
A fixed-rate mortgage locks in your rate for the entire life of your loan. For example, if you get a 30-year mortgage with a 6% interest rate, your rate will stay at 6% for the entire 30 years unless you refinance or sell.
An adjustable-rate mortgage locks in your rate for a predetermined amount of time and then changes it periodically. Let’s say you get a 7/1 ARM with an introductory rate of 6%. Your rate would be 6% for the first seven years, then the rate would increase or decrease once per year for the last 23 years of your term. Whether your rate goes up or down depends on several factors, such as the economy and housing market.
At the beginning of your mortgage term, most of your monthly payment goes toward interest. Your monthly payment toward mortgage principal and interest stays the same throughout the years — however, less and less of your payment goes toward interest, and more goes toward the mortgage principal or the amount you originally borrowed.
Learn more: Adjustable-rate vs. fixed-rate mortgages
A 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is a good choice if you want a lower mortgage payment and the predictability that comes with having a fixed rate. Just know that your rate will be higher than if you choose a shorter term and will result in paying significantly more in interest over the years.
You might like a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage if you want to pay off your home loan quickly and save money on interest. These shorter terms come with lower interest rates, and since you’re cutting your repayment time in half, you’ll save a lot in interest in the long run. But you’ll need to be sure you can comfortably afford the higher monthly payments that come with 15-year terms.
Read more: How to decide between a 15-year and 30-year fixed-rate mortgage
Typically, an adjustable-rate mortgage could be good if you plan to sell before the introductory rate ******* ends. Adjustable rates usually start lower than fixed rates, then your rate will change after a predetermined amount of time. However, 5/1 and 7/1 ARM rates have similar to (or even higher than) 30-year fixed rates recently. Before getting an ARM just for a lower rate, compare your rate options from term to term and lender to lender.
The average 30-year and 15-year fixed mortgage rates have decreased for two weeks in a row, but they had increased for five straight weeks before that. Overall, rates are staying relatively high. According to Freddie Mac data, the 30-year fixed rate is 32 basis points higher than this time last year, and the 15-year rate is up 18 basis points.
Mortgage rates will probably decrease throughout 2025, but it’s unclear how drastically they will fall due to the uncertainty of how Trump’s presidency will impact inflation and other aspects of the economy. We can expect to see rates stay well above 6%.
Read more: When will the housing market ****** again?
According to Freddie Mac, this week’s national average 30-year mortgage rate is down one basis point to 6.95%, and the average 15-year mortgage rate has decreased by four basis points to 6.12%.
According to their January housing forecasts, Fannie Mae and the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) expect the 30-year mortgage rate to end 2025 at 6.50%.
Mortgage rates could increase here and there in 2025, but there’s a good chance they will actually decrease by the end of the year.

Report: Apple is stopping work on a pair of smart glasses that would have connected to the Mac
Report: Apple is stopping work on a pair of smart glasses that would have connected to the Mac
Apple’s reportedly shelved plans for a pair of smart glasses that connected to the Mac
According to Bloomberg, the glasses would have had “advanced projectors” for layering AR elements
The smart glasses would have required a tether to the Mac
If there’s one thing for sure about 2025, it’s that the smart glasses sector is heating up with plenty of rumors about future Meta glasses that stretch beyond the readily available Ray-Ban ones, Samsung and Google working on a pair, and countless other competitors.
However, it seems that Apple’s reported work on a pair of AR smart glasses that would have connected to a Mac for power has been canceled or shelved this week, according to new reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The glasses themselves would have taken the design of regular glasses – much like Ray-Ban’s Meta smart glasses – with built-in displays and the ability to connect to a Mac to unlock fresh experiences. The product itself has been rumored for quite some time, and like the Apple Watch, it wouldn’t have been an entirely standalone device.
The project, reportedly dubbed N107, would have had “advanced projectors that could display information, images and video in the field of view for each eye,” as described by Gurman. There can be comparisons made to Project Orion, which TechRadar got to demo and was impressed by, and like the Vision Pro – Apple’s $3,499 spatial computing headset – it can layer elements over the real world.
According to Gurman, the idea was to create smart AR glasses products for the masses, and the purported smart glasses would have fit that bill quite nicely, even if they required a connection to another device. It could have given Apple an offering at a lower price point than the Vision Pro and more in line with Ray-Ban Meta’s smart glasses or even the X-Real’s, which can also take a screen and broadcast it much larger with a pair of glasses.
Gurman writes, “The company shuttered the program this week, according to people with knowledge of the move.” Additionally, he shares that the internal testing wasn’t hitting the right mark with testers and that before Apple opted for the route of these connecting to a Mac, the original goal was an iPhone.
While this pair of Apple smart glasses is reportedly shelved – though, in classic Apple fashion, the company did not ever confirm its existence or development – the tech giant is reportedly still working on a more affordable Vision Pro, likely without ‘Pro’ in the name. At some point in the future, the goal is still to create “a set of standalone AR glasses.”

It’s clear that the eventual goal is glasses, as they are the most familiar design to consumers. Heck, I wear glasses every day, as do countless others, and this would likely lead to larger adoption. We’ve gotten a taste of these with Ray-Ban Metas, and while those lack a screen, the built-in cameras, speakers, and microphones do add some affordances, like snapping a photo without having to pull out your phone or listening to music while in a full, completely unobtrusive transparency mode.
This news comes right after Gurman shared more information on reportedly in the works AirPods with cameras, which could be seen as a way to go after the market currently filled by Meta’s Ray-Ban. Potentially, even helping Apple Intelligence and Siri be more helpful through sight.
(Image credit: Lance Ulanoff / Future)
We also know that Samsung and Google are working together on a pair of smart glasses running Android XR, but a headset dubbed ‘Project Moohan’ or whatever the actual product name might be will have to arrive first. Snapchat has a new pair of glasses that TechRadar’s editor-at-large Lance Ulanoff has tried, and Meta has Project Orion, which will likely arrive as a consumer product as early as 2027.

The experience that Apple created with Vision Pro is a compelling one, and definitely among the best mixtures of hardware, software, and features that I’ve tried. One of the biggest issues, though, is price – at $3,499, it’s not a product that you might just buy on a whirl, and Apple needs to work to get the price down. It’s clear that is a goal as well as giving future iterations a more comfortable, everyday form factor.
Gurman reaffirms that a more affordable Vision Pro headset is in the works and promises to share more soon in this latest report. Additionally, smart glasses that don’t require a tether from another device and other wearables, including AirPods with cameras, are still an eventual goal.

Exclusive-Musk aides lock government workers out of computer systems at US agency, sources say
Exclusive-Musk aides lock government workers out of computer systems at US agency, sources say
By Tim Reid
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Aides to Elon Musk charged with running the U.S. government human resources agency have locked career civil servants out of computer systems that contain the personal data of millions of federal employees, according to two agency officials.
Since taking office 11 days ago, President Donald Trump has embarked on a massive government makeover, firing and sidelining hundreds of civil servants in his first steps toward downsizing the bureaucracy and installing more loyalists.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Musk, the billionaire Tesla CEO and X owner tasked by Trump to slash the size of the 2.2 million-strong civilian government workforce, has moved swiftly to install allies at the agency known as the Office of Personnel Management.
The two officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation, said some senior career employees at OPM have had their access revoked to some of the department’s data systems.
The systems include a vast database called Enterprise Human Resources Integration, which contains dates of birth, Social Security numbers, appraisals, home addresses, pay grades and length of service of government workers, the officials said.
“We have no visibility into what they are doing with the computer and data systems,” one of the officials said. “That is creating great concern. There is no oversight. It creates real cybersecurity and hacking implications.”
Officials affected by the move can still log on and access functions such as email but can no longer see the massive datasets that cover every facet of the federal workforce.
Musk, OPM, representatives of the new team, and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
OPM has sent out memos that eschew the normal dry wording of government missives as it encourages civil servants to consider buyout offers to quit and take a vacation to a “dream destination.”
Don Moynihan, a professor at the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, said the actions inside OPM raised concerns about congressional oversight at the agency and how Trump and Musk view the federal bureaucracy.
“This makes it much harder for anyone outside Musk’s inner circle at OPM to know what’s going on,” Moynihan said.
MUSK INFLUENCE
A team including current and former employees of Musk assumed command of OPM on Jan. 20, the day Trump took office. They have moved sofa beds onto the fifth floor of the agency’s headquarters, which contains the director’s office and can only be accessed with a security badge or a security *******, one of the OPM employees said.
The sofa beds have been installed so the team can work around the clock, the employee said.
Musk, a major donor to a famously demanding boss, installed beds at X for employees to enable them to work longer when in 2022 he took over the social media platform, formerly known as Twitter.
“It feels like a hostile takeover,” the employee said.
The new appointees in charge of OPM have moved the agency’s chief management officer, Katie Malague, out of her office and to a new office on a different floor, the officials said.
Malague did not respond to a request for comment.
David Lebryk, the top-ranking career U.S. Treasury Department official, is set to leave his post following a clash with allies of Musk after they asked for access to payment systems, the Washington Post reported on Friday.
The new team at OPM includes software engineers and Brian Bjelde, who joined Musk’s SpaceX venture in 2003 as an avionics engineer before rising to become the company’s vice president of human resources. Bjelde’s role at OPM is that of a senior adviser.
The acting head of OPM, Charles Ezell, has been sending memos to the entire government workforce since Trump took office, including Tuesday’s offering federal employees the chance to quit with eight months pay.
“No-one here knew that the memos were coming out. We are finding out about these memos the same time as the rest of the world,” one of the officials said.
Among the group that now runs OPM is Amanda Scales, a former Musk employee, who is now OPM’s chief of staff. In some memos sent out on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21 by Ezell, including one directing agencies to identify federal workers on probationary periods, agency heads were asked to email Scales at her OPM email address.
Another senior adviser is Riccardo Biasini, a former engineer at Tesla and most recently a director at The Boring Company, Musk’s tunnel-building operation in Las Vegas.

Key moments in year since Melbourne mum Samantha Murphy disappeared
Key moments in year since Melbourne mum Samantha Murphy disappeared
The case shook Australia.
A beloved mum to three kids goes for an early morning run and never comes home.
It’s coming up to one year since Samantha Murphy went running in the forests near her home in Ballarat and disappeared, sparking mass volunteer search operations and an extensive police investigation.
A young man, 23-year-old Patrick Orren Stephenson, has been charged with her *******, but he has pleaded not guilty to the alleged killing.
Despite extensive and repeated targeted searches across multiple bushland areas, her body has not been found.
One year on from this disturbing, twisting tragedy, NewsWire takes a look at how the mystery unfolded and reveals where the case is now.

On Sunday, February 4, 2024, 51-year-old Murphy leaves her home on Eureka St in Ballarat East about 7am.
Her family raise concerns for her ******** when she fails to return for a scheduled brunch.
Over the coming days and weeks, the desperation and heartache around her disappearance escalates.
Sam Murphy Timeline 1 Year Anniversary
February 5 – First Public Statement
Victoria Police Acting Inspector Lisa MacDougall issues a public appeal.
“Obviously, yesterday was a hot day … there (is) obviously increased risk there because of the heat,” she said.
“It raises the urgency of the search for us and obviously we account for the fact that that will have an impact on someone’s health.
Police and the SES search the state forest area behind the Buninyong Golf Club on Monday.
MacDougall said Ms Murphy usually went for a run every day and was very familiar with the ********* State Forest and surrounding areas.
“The area of search isn’t completely remote, we are on the outskirts of Ballarat, and it’s not that far from urban areas as well,” MacDougall said.
February 7 – The Murphy Family Plea for Help
Husband Michael Murphy appears before the media with his family and pleads for public help.
Murphy’s daughter Jess delivered an impassioned plea for her mum to “come home soon”.
“Mum’s a really strong woman and she’s far too determined to give up this fight,” she said through tears outside the Ballarat West Police Station.
“I know she’s out there somewhere, so if you could please continue to search for her and give us something to work with we’d really appreciate it.

“Mum we love you so much and we miss you … please come home soon.”
Mr Murphy also spoke and implored anyone with information about his wife to come forward to the police.
“People just don’t vanish into thin air. Someone’s got to know something,” he said.
“Whether it be any little thing that you might think is relevant, just call the police and let them know.
“It’ll give us a bit of peace of mind, some hope.”
February 10 – The Search is Scaled Back
In a statement released on Saturday morning, police confirmed the “active search” for Ms Murphy would be “scaled back” over the weekend.
“An extensive six-day search has been conducted involving local police, along with personnel from the Search and Rescue Squad, Mounted Branch and Dog Squad, plus significant assistance from members of the SES and CFA,” the police said.
“Police continue to be in regular contact with Samantha’s family regarding the developments of the search and the status of the investigation.
“The investigative stage of the investigation continues and as any new information comes to hand identifying areas of interest, the search will be scaled up.”

But in touching scenes on Saturday, volunteers continued to hit the trails in Woowookarung Regional Park — where Ms Murphy often went running.
Some of those searching were local to the area, while others given up their weekend and travelled from Melbourne hoping to help the search effort.
February 14 –‘Suspicious’
Victorian Police chief commissioner Shane Patton says the disappearance is being treated as suspicious
March 6, 7 and 8 – The Arrest, ******* Charge and Identification
Victorian Police arrest 22-year-old Patrick Orren Stephenson at a Scotsburn home on March 6 and he remains in police custody overnight.
The next day at 9.30am, the police announce the arrest, and then announce in the afternoon they have charged Stephenson with *******.
Stephenson appears at Ballarat Magistrates Court on March 7, but his identity is suppressed.
On March 8, an order preventing the media from naming him is lifted.

Mr Stephenson is an electrician and the son of former AFL player Orren Stephenson.
The police allege Mr Stephenson acted alone.
“We’re saying this was a deliberate attack on Samantha,” Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said at a press conference after announcing the arrest.
“He’s been located through a range of investigative outcomes that have come together, and as you are aware, we have been pinging phones and following up on investigation reports from members of the public.
“We have done ground searches, we have done door knocks, so it’s a whole range of information that has come together.”
May 29 – The iPhone
The police launch a targeted search at Buninyong.
They find Murphy’s iPhone in mud near a dam.

November 14 – Stephenson Pleads Not Guilty
Patrick Orren Stephenson, 23, sported a bushy beard as he was beamed into the Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning from the Melbourne Assessment Prison.
He wore a white shirt and kept his arms crossed in front of him and spoke to confirm he could see and hear the court.
Ms Murphy’s husband, Mick Murphy, watched the hearing from the body of the courtroom.
Crown prosecutor Raymond Gibson KC told the court that Mr Stephenson had elected to fast-track his case to the Supreme Court for trial.

This skips a committal hearing in the Magistrates Court jurisdiction in which a magistrate hears the evidence and decides if they’re satisfied it could support a conviction. It will allow Mr Stephenson to face trial at an earlier date.
“Not guilty, Your Honour,” the accused man said when asked how he would like to plea.
Several members of Mr Stephenson’s family observed the hearing online.
Police allege the Ballarat-born private schoolboy murdered Ms Murphy on February 4 in the Mount Clear area – 6km from her Eureka St home.
What Happens Now?
Stephenson has been committed to stand trial at the Victorian Supreme Court.
The trial is now in the “pre-trial” phase.
The pre-trial phase ensures both sides are prepared for trial. Both sides exchange relevant documents and evidence, and witness lists and expert reports. The judge makes sure everything is ready for the trial.
A directions hearing is booked for February 18.
The trial is expected in 2025, but it’s possible it will be pushed back to 2026.
As of this week, Victorian Police told NewsWire there were no new developments or updates in the search for Murphy’s body.

Intel gets $536 million in interest from 1.06 billion euro EU antitrust fine
Intel gets $536 million in interest from 1.06 billion euro EU antitrust fine
By Foo Yun Chee
BRUSSELS (Reuters) – U.S. chipmaker Intel (INTC) has received 515.55 million euros ($536 million) in default interest from EU antitrust regulators related to a 1.06 billion euro fine levied in 2009, EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera has told EU lawmakers.
Intel sued the European Commission for 593 million euros in 2022 after convincing Europe’s second-top court to scrap the fine.
Companies are increasingly turning to the courts to get the EU executive to pay default interest on reimbursed fines in annulled antitrust cases.
“The Commission paid Intel on 6 November 2024 the appropriate interest compensation of 515 547 908.15 euros,” Ribera told a European Parliament lawmaker in a written comment.
While the court dismissed the bulk of the commission’s decision, it backed the regulator’s finding against Intel’s payments to HP, Acer and Lenovo to halt or delay rival products, which resulted in another EU fine of 376 million euros to the company in 2023.

American Airlines ******: Remaining bodies will stay in aircraft until fuselage is removed from Potomac River
Hopes of retrieving the remaining bodies from the wrecks of an American Airlines passenger jet and an army Blackhawk helicopter sitting in the Potomac River in Washington prior to the fuselage’s removal have been shelved until the wreckage is removed.
Authorities confirmed at a press conference at Ronald Reagan Airport on Friday (local time) that the operation is now a salvage effort and the remaining bodies will be brought to the surface inside the the two wrecks.
The confirmed death toll now sits at 41 with the remains of 28 of those bodies being identified and the families of 18 people confirmed to have been killed notified, as the heartbreaking task of identifying bodies and informing relatives continues.
Crucial details have come to light as the Washington DC fire chief delivered updates on the painstaking salvage operation to remove the fuselage of the American Airlines passenger jet and army chopper that still lay in the freezing Potomac River.
The helicopter will be the first of the two to be lifted form the river with the passenger jet wreckage hopefully lifted and removed on Saturday (local time), with bad weather and strong currents having slowed the process.
When asked if the plane needs to be lifted from the river to recover the remaining bodies, Washington DC Fire and EMS Chief, John Donnelly responded, “Yes, we are focusing on retrieving the helicopter from the river today and will look to start on the plane tomorrow”.
“We have removed and confirmed 41 bodies fro wreckage, with 28 of those identified and 18 families notified,” Chief Donnelly told reporters.
“We have had 911 calls received about debris downstream but no bodies or body parts,” Chief Donnelly said.
“Local residents have been urged to report and recover any debris they find downstream.”
Ronald Reagan Airport Vice President Terry Liercke told reporters they will be liaising with the FAA in coming days and weeks as they prepare plans to reopen the airport in full, with two of three runways still closed after the tragic event.
Authorities faced the intense media gathering as reporters quizzed Mr Liercke strongly about where the “buck stops” with regard to questions over staffing levels and safety measures at one of the world’s busiest airports.
When asked who is responsible for making sure the next plane to take off at Ronald Reagan Airport is safe to do so Mr Liercke answered “we have to refer to the federal safety regulators”.
“We have the safest air space in the US and we work with the FAA on air space plans”, Mr Liercke said.
Local authorities have faced an intense media gathering as they fielded questions on recovery efforts and accusations of mismanagement at the Ronald Reagan Airport in the US capital, Washington.

Billionaire Bill Koch’s 52-Acre Aspen Estate Just Hit the Market for $125 Million
Billionaire Bill Koch’s 52-Acre Aspen Estate Just Hit the Market for $125 Million
A sprawling Colorado estate long owned by billionaire businessman, sailor, and avid art and wine collector William “Bill” Koch has just hit the market. Nestled amid a scenic alpine valley tucked in between Castle Creek and the peaks of the Elk Mountains, about 10 miles outside of downtown Aspen, the 52-acre spread with a main home, several guest cabins, and a wealth of recreational pursuits is armed with a hefty $125 million price tag.
“You won’t find an opportunity to build this scale of square footage again in Aspen,” says Steven Shane of Compass, who holds the listing. “With private ponds, hiking and cross-country skiing trails, and proximity to the vibrant heart of downtown Aspen, this is the ultimate multi-generational family legacy property.”
More from Robb Report
The main home is centered around a fireside great room boasting a wall of windows overlooking spectacular mountain vistas.
RELATED: An Aspen Estate Sells for $108 Million, Becoming Colorado’s Most Expensive Residential *****
Koch, founder of the Florida-based energy development holding company Oxbow Carbon Corporation and a member of the ultra-wealthy family behind the crude oil-gathering conglomerate Koch Industries, paid $26.5 million for the former dude ranch in 2007. He went on to transform an existing event venue into a private retreat and also acquired an additional 31 acres before hoisting the entire 82-acre spread up for ***** in 2015 at $100 million; the price was later dropped to $80 million. After selling the 31-acre portion of the property in 2020 for $14.5 million, he took the remaining 52-acre parcel with a lodge off the market and floated it for rent at $35,000 per night or $300,000 a week.
Nestled on Rooney Circle, a private road named for his wife Bridget Rooney Koch, the compound is known as Elk Mountain Lodge and features a main residence, plus seven guest cabins—for a combined total of 14 bedrooms and 17 baths in almost 25,300 square feet.
In addition to hiking and cross-country ski trails, the 52-acre spread sports two hot tubs.

Seven bedrooms and eight baths can be found in the primary dwelling, which has a little more than 16,600 square feet of rustic living space boasting flagstone floors, 30-foot ceilings, wood-paneled walls, and numerous fireplaces. In addition to a 20-seat dining room and climate-controlled wine storage, other highlights include two studies and a screening room that doubles as an altitude-acclimation chamber. The largest of the seven cabins currently houses a gym, with other amenities including a pair of hot tubs, ponds, and hiking and cross-country ski trails throughout the estate.
Per The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the listing, Koch has homes in New York City, Palm Beach, Fla., and Cape Cod. He also lays claim to the roughly 4,500-acre Bear Ranch in Paonia, Colo., where he created a multi-building replica of an Old West town.

Trump moving to fire FBI agents who investigated him
Trump moving to fire FBI agents who investigated him
Trump administration officials are moving to fire FBI agents engaged in investigations involving US President Donald Trump in the coming days, two people familiar with the plans say.
It was not clear on Friday how many agents might be affected, though scores of investigators were involved in various inquiries touching Trump. Officials acting at the direction of the administration have been working to identify individual employees who participated in politically sensitive investigations for possible termination, said the people who insisted on anonymity to discuss private conversations.
The terminations would be a major blow to the historic independence from the White House of the nation’s premier federal law enforcement agency and would reflect the Trump’s determination to bend the law enforcement and intelligence community to his will.
It is part of a startling pattern of retribution waged on federal government employees, following the forced ousters of a group of senior FBI executives earlier this week as well as a mass firing by the Justice Department of prosecutors on special counsel Jack Smith’s team who investigated Trump.
The FBI Agents Association called the planned firings “outrageous actions by acting officials are fundamentally at odds with the law enforcement objectives outlined by Trump and his support for FBI agents”.
“Dismissing potentially hundreds of agents would severely weaken the Bureau’s ability to protect the country from national security and criminal threats and will ultimately risk setting up the Bureau and its new leadership for failure,” the association said in a statement.
The FBI and Smith’s team investigated Trump over his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and his hoarding of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Both of those cases resulted in indictments that were withdrawn after Trump’s November presidential win because of longstanding Justice Department policy prohibiting the federal prosecution of a sitting president.
The Justice Department also brought charges against more than 1500 Trump supporters who participated in the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol, though Trump on his first day in office granted clemency to all of them — including the ones convicted of violent crimes — through pardons, sentence commutations and dismissals of indictment.
A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment, and an FBI spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.
The firings would be done over the will of the acting FBI director Brian Driscoll, who has indicated that he objects to the idea, the people said.
