Six Nations 2025: Champions Ireland grind through gears against England before finding groove
Six Nations 2025: Champions Ireland grind through gears against England before finding groove
Rather than allow mistake to beget mistake, as they so often did across the autumn, Ireland moved slowly through the gears before finally reaching cruising speed.
Aided by Marcus Smith’s yellow card, the men in green were showing signs of getting to grips with proceedings before the turn, but it was only in the second half that they truly looked like two-time reigning champions of this competition.
England’s Borthwick said it was “hard to quantify” how much the effort expended in negating Ireland in the first half had left his side fatigued but, as their challenge faded, Ireland’s energy levels only seemed to rise.
England got little from their six-two bench as Ireland’s replacements turned the game in the home team’s favour.
Benefiting from forward depth that meant last year’s skipper Peter O’Mahony did not even make the Irish 23, Easterby was able to call upon two players who missed the autumn through injury in hooker Dan Sheehan and back row Jack Conan.
Both were superb after coming on in the 50th minute to highlight a quality bench effort across the board.
“I thought the guys that started laid a really strong foundation and it wasn’t easy going. It was tough at times,” said Easterby.
“The guys that came off the bench benefited from the work that had been done in the first 50, 55 minutes.
“To be fair, the guys that came off the bench were brilliant, they really impacted the game.”
The two late tries conceded to allow England a losing bonus point will be a source of consternation for Easterby.
As will the injury to Finlay Bealham that means, with Tadhg Furlong already struggling with a calf complaint and Tom O’Toole suspended, Ireland could be going to Murrayfield next week with their fourth and fifth choice tight-heads.
Of course, Ireland are currently enjoying a 10-game winning run against Scotland, and when they last visited Edinburgh two years ago they needed flanker Josh van der Flier to throw into the line-outs with prop Cian Healy scrummaging at hooker and still managed to come out on top.
The Six Nations is often said to be a tournament where momentum is paramount.
Having struggled to find it all autumn long, after such an emphatic second half on Saturday, it suddenly feels Ireland have plenty once again.

$30 DeepSeek dupe? US scientists claim to duplicate AI model for peanuts
$30 DeepSeek dupe? US scientists claim to duplicate AI model for peanuts
A group of researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, claims they’ve managed to reproduce the core technology behind DeepSeek’s headline-grabbing AI at a total cost of roughly $30.
The news is another twist in a quickly developing narrative about whether building state-of-the-art AI demands colossal budgets or if far more affordable alternatives have been overlooked by tech’s biggest players.
DeepSeek made waves recently by introducing R1, an AI model that claims to replicate the functions of ChatGPT and other costly systems at just a fraction of the training expense typically seen in Silicon Valley.
The Berkeley team’s response? To do it even more cheaply. Led by PhD candidate Jiayi Pan, the researchers created a smaller-scale version, dubbed “TinyZero,” and released it on GitHub for public experimentation. Though it lacks the massive 671-billion-parameter heft of DeepSeek’s main offering, Pan says TinyZero captures the core behaviors seen in DeepSeek’s so-called “R1-Zero” model.
Pan’s approach centers on reinforcement learning, a technique in which the AI, starting with almost random guesses, gradually refines its answers by revising and searching through possible solutions. In a post describing the project, he highlighted the Countdown game, a British TV puzzle where players combine given numbers to reach a target value. “The results: it just works!” Pan wrote that although the AI initially spat out “****** outputs,” it ultimately figured out how to correct its mistakes.
The ******* revelation
The idea that a few days of work and a handful of dollars could replicate such a core AI capability is an eye-opener for many industry watchers. It flies in the face of conventional wisdom that big breakthroughs in AI require entire data centers, power-hungry GPUs, and millions or even billions of dollars in spending.
DeepSeek shook the tech world by asserting that training its main model costs merely a few million, substantially less than many U.S. firms spend on AI. According to Pan and his team, it can be done for a mere $30 on a small scale.
Still, skeptics have urged caution. Critics point out that DeepSeek’s claimed affordability numbers may not give the complete picture, as the company might be benefiting from alternate resources or distillation techniques from other proprietary models.
While Pan’s “TinyZero” shows that advanced reinforcement learning can be done on a budget, it doesn’t necessarily address the depth or breadth of tasks the larger DeepSeek system can handle. TinyZero may be more akin to a simplified proof-of-concept than a fully fledged challenger.
Yet the demonstration hints at a deeper shift in the AI scene. If open-source developers can replicate sophisticated functionalities with scant resources, it raises questions about why major players like OpenAI, Google, or Microsoft pour vast sums into their platforms. On one hand, scale and advanced capabilities do come at a price. On the other, the possibility of cost inflation within the industry emerges. After all, open-source initiatives could undercut these tech giants by operating on leaner budgets.
“TinyZero” and DeepSeek’s R1 indicate a growing appetite for compact, resource-friendly AI models. Many had assumed that cutting-edge breakthroughs required billions in expenditure. Now, it seems a bright graduate student or a scrappy startup might surprise the world with innovation on the cheap. Whether this ultimately reshapes the future of AI infrastructure or remains an exciting anomaly, the conversation around affordable, powerful AI is only beginning.
For Pan and his team, there’s a clear aim: “We hope this project helps to demystify the emerging RL scaling research,” he wrote. Judging by the global reaction, they’ve already made their mark.

There’s a clear winner in our Galaxy S25 Ultra vs iPhone 16 Pro Max camera test
There’s a clear winner in our Galaxy S25 Ultra vs iPhone 16 Pro Max camera test
Would it be right if we didn’t put the latest Samsung Galaxy S series against the latest iPhone in a camera test? We don’t think so, which is why we’ve been out taking photos with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max to see which one has the best camera.
Camera specification
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra (left) and Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max Andy Boxall / Digital Trends
The Galaxy S25 Ultra’s camera has the same 200-megapixel main camera, 50MP telephoto for 5x optical zoom, and 10MP telephoto for 3x optical zoom as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. What’s new, outside of the processor and software driving it, is a new 50MP wide-angle camera. Samsung has collaborated with Qualcomm on a special Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor and uses plenty of AI in the camera for improved results.
A 48MP main camera heads the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s camera setup, and it’s joined by a 12MP telephoto for a 5x optical zoom, and a 48MP wide-angle camera. Apple’s own A18 Pro processor powers it, and both phones make use of optical image stabilization across the main and telephoto cameras. While it was the 16 Pro Max tested here, the camera is the same as the smaller iPhone 16 Pro, so the results should apply to it too.
Main camera
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s camera.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s camera.
The main camera is the one you’re going to use the most, and throughout my time taking photos with both, there has been one overriding quality difference between them — sharpness. It comes down in the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s favor, as there’s a continued hint of blur and fuzz in the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s photos.
It’s most noticeable when you crop an image, but as it’s there, the keen-eyed may spot it without getting up close and personal. The photo of the church is a good example, as the stone walls and tiled roof aren’t as pin sharp in the S5 Ultra’s photo, and although I prefer the way it has exposed the shot, the iPhone’s colors are more vibrant and natural.
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s camera.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s camera.
The iPhone’s main camera also always generates a more pleasing depth of field around its subject, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra keeps more of the scene in focus. I tapped to focus on the hot water bottle sign in this photo, and the iPhone makes it clear this was my intention, while the S25 Ultra does not. I prefer being able to frame a shot like this, and find the S25 Ultra’s photos can be quite “flat.” However, some may prefer the S25 Ultra’s wider focal point.
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s camera.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s camera.
In a photo taken in a flower shop, you can see the two treat colors in a similar way without oversaturating the scene, but the iPhone’s generally sharper photo with its warmer tone is more pleasing. The two cameras never seem to quite get the white balance right, and both lack consistency here. However, in general, while I’ve liked photos taken with both phones, the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s sharper images are my preference.
Winner: Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max
Wide-angle camera
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s wide-angle camera.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s wide-angle camera.
This is where the Galaxy S25 Ultra needs to shine, as the wide-angle camera is the only hardware difference between it and the S24 Ultra. Compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, it’s definitely an improvement, with richer colors and more accurate exposure, but it’s not perfect and there’s still work to be done.
The wide view of a vineyard shows Samsung has amped up the colors but sensibly used the exposure to not make the scene too unrealistic. The iPhone’s exposure washes the foreground out too much, despite showing a little more detail in the shadows. The Galaxy S25 Ultra’s photo is quite heavy-handed with its smoothing though, but the detail in the far distance is less hazy than the iPhone.
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s wide-angle camera.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s wide-angle camera.
There’s a massive difference in tone too, as you can see in this photo of a bridge over a lake. I don’t hate the iPhone’s treatment of the scene, but it’s far from realistic, and the Galaxy S25 Ultra captures it really well. The S25 Ultra’s smoothing works in its favor, avoiding the harsh pixelation found in the iPhone’s photo when you crop it down, but I’d like to see it toned down in future software updates.
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s wide-angle camera.

Our final wide-angle photo, taken on the same day as the one above, shows the S25 Ultra’s realism and accurate colors, and the amount of additional detail its photos contain. The trees in the background are in sharp focus, while the iPhone’s background are blurred. It’s the same situation with the water. The Galaxy S25 Ultra’s wide-angle camera easily takes the win here.
Winner: Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
Telephoto
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s 5x telephoto camera.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s 5x telephoto.
The telephoto camera was always the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s thing, but this has slowly changed as other brands have caught up, and Samsung itself abandoned the S-series’ defining 10x optical in favor of a hybrid 10x. The camera provides an array of shortcuts — 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x — but only 3x and 5x are optical. The iPhone’s camera app shows a 2x, and 5x shortcut, and both are optical zooms.
Let’s talk about the 5x zoom first, as this is where both cameras technically match. Straight away the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s white balance is more accurate, and along with the punchier reds and greens, the photo pops more than the iPhone’s image. Crop it down and there’s more detail and less noise from the S25 Ultra too.
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s 10x telephoto camera.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s 10x telephoto camera.
How about 10x? The Galaxy S25 Ultra has the iPhone beaten here too, with less noise (but more smoothing, which may upset some) and sharper focus in its 10x photos, but it’s quite a close thing. You really notice the differences when you examine the photos closely or crop them down. At first glance, the iPhone 16 Pro Max does a very good job at a zoom range it’s not supposed to provide, and it’s still surprisingly usable.
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s 3x telephoto camera.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s 2x telephoto camera.
Use the 2x on the iPhone and the 3x on the Galaxy S25 Ultra and not much changes. This lowlight shot shows both handle exposure and tone in a similar way, but there’s a lot more grain in the iPhone’s photo, and the S25 Ultra takes the sharper photo, opposite to how the main cameras performed. The iPhone 16 Pro Max’s telephoto ability is decent, but it can’t match the Samsung phone.
Winner: Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
Night mode
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s in low light.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s camera.
Before getting started with the photos, it’s worth mentioning the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s incredibly dark on-screen preview for lowlight images, which makes you think the photo isn’t going to come out. Luckily, it is not representative of the end result. The iPhone’s previews are exactly like the final photo and generally, the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s lowlight photos are warmer than the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s photos, which border on harsh sometimes, as you can see in the first photo.
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s camera in low light.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s camera.
Both can struggle with noise, which the S25 Ultra compensates for with more smoothing than the iPhone. Neither is preferable, but it can make Samsung’s photos look more polished at a glance. However, when you crop the images down both photos have the same level of detail.
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra camera at night.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max’s camera at night.
The final photo shows the slight differences between the two cameras in low light, and neither is really better than the other, revealing similar levels of detail, and maintaining basically the same colors and tone. Only marginal exposure changes are visible, which don’t affect the overall look of the photo. Both are very good in low light.
Winner: draw
Photo editing and AI
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra (left) and Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max Andy Boxall / Digital Trends
Both smartphones feature extensive photo editing capabilities. The iPhone’s Photographic Styles are available “live” and can be changed after you’ve taken the photo, but only if you’re saving images in the HEIF format. Samsung’s interpretation is more flexible. A range of filters are available in the editing app, more can be downloaded from the Galaxy Store, and I like the way it has added granular editing using sliders. It’s more intuitive than Apple’s system, and can really change the way a photo looks.
Both use AI to change photos. Apple has its Playground app, while Samsung adds its AI into the Gallery app, and its Sketch to Image feature is a fun addition, where the AI adds an element to a photo based on your own basic sketch. Lightroom is also available for both operating systems, and there aren’t obvious differences in the way they operate, and a subscription is needed to access in-depth features.
A photo taken with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra’s camera and edited in the Gallery app.
A photo taken with the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max and edited in the Photos app.
Both editing suites are feature-packed and relatively easy to use. It’s simple to change the look of your photos, but the AI features are gimmicks used solely for fun, and I doubt many people will consistently use them.
Winner: draw
The Galaxy S25 Ultra beats the iPhone
Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max (left) and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra Andy Boxall / Digital Trends
The Galaxy S25 Ultra has beaten the iPhone 16 Pro Max in our camera comparison, despite losing in the critical main camera category. This causes some problems, as the main camera is likely the one everyone will use the most, and therefore the quality here will be most important. I’m not taking anything away from the Galaxy S25 Ultra, as it’s obvious it has the superior wide-angle and telephoto cameras, but if you rarely use either of them, the iPhone 16 Pro Max may be the better choice.
However, taken as an overall camera system — which is what this test is about — the Galaxy S25 Ultra is more versatile, and goes on to equal the iPhone 16 Pro Max in every other category. It’s a worthy winner.

Known to generations of El Pasoans, Father ‘Buzz’ dies at 82
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A Catholic priest, who was known to generations of El Pasoans for his kind nature and his advocacy for the less fortunate in the Borderland, has died.
Rev. James Wolter “Buzz” Hall, who served the El Paso Diocese for nearly 55, has died at the age of 82, Diocese said Saturday night, Feb. 1. The Diocese did not say when he died.

For many El Pasoans, he was affectionately known as “Father Buzz,” a tireless advocate for the poor, migrants and colonias.
Hall was ordained in 1970 and served different communities and parishes in the El Paso Diocese over the years. He was perhaps most well-known for his time in at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in East El Paso.
Father Buzz was also one of the co-founders of the El Paso Interreligious Sponsoring Organization, commonly called by its acronym EPISO. This is a grass-roots, church-based organizing project that seeks to change and empower communities and hold elected officials accountable. EPISO would hold its own particular style of candidate forums in which they would ask elected officials questions that were important to poor communities.
******** arrangements will be announced as soon as they become available, the Diocese said.
Here is the entire statement that the Diocese sent out on Hall’s death:
“With faith and trust in the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, we sadly announce the passingof Rev. James Wolter ‘Buzz’ Hall, 82. Affectionately known as Fr. Buzz, he dedicated nearly 55years to serving the diocese with fervor and love for the El Paso community.
“During his priestly ministry, Fr. Buzz was an outspoken advocate for the poor and the migrant and served on several organizations dedicated to that work. Ordained on May 29, 1970, Fr. Buzz served various communities within the El Paso Diocese, particularly in East El Paso at St. ThomasAquinas Catholic Church.
“Eternal rest grant unto him, Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul andthe souls of the all the faithful departed through God’s mercy rest in peace.”

Perth Wildcats beat Sydney Kings with massive rebounding effort to celebrate Jesse Wagstaff’s 500th game
Perth Wildcats beat Sydney Kings with massive rebounding effort to celebrate Jesse Wagstaff’s 500th game
Perth Wildcats captain Jesse Wagstaff has lauded his team’s passion and intensity, saying the style they played in a 104-97 win over Sydney Kings is precisely what’s needed to compete against the best.
The Wildcats moved back into third spot on the ladder following the win and their destiny is now in their own hands. They will guarantee a top-three finish if they beat Adelaide at RAC Arena on Friday night. Finishing second will require other results to fall their way.
The Wildcats gave up their hold on second spot when they lost consecutive home games last week. But they were brilliant in the final term against South East Melbourne on Friday and then won 23 offensive rebounds against Sydney to change the momentum of their season.
Wagstaff said the team approached the game in the right way.
Camera IconKeanu Pinder is in great form. Credit: Darrian Traynor/Getty Images
“If you take the scoreline out of tonight, if you look at our performance, I really like the intent that we played with,” he said.
“I thought we were in a good head space. If we play like that – and that’s a style we have to play at – I think we’re really great. It’s when we’re a bit off the pace and perhaps take things a bit easier or are not willing to do the hard work (that we struggle).
“I thought we had just great, solid intensity for almost 40 minutes That’s what you’ve got to do in this league. There’s some very good teams and some very good players. You have to play with a certain intent or passion.”
The win meant Wagstaff could celebrate his 500th NBL game in style. Bryce Cotton was fantastic with 30 points and four steals, Dylan Windler made several long-range three-pointers to score 14 points and he also had six steals.
Camera IconJesse Wagstaff celebrated his 500th game with a win. Credit: Darrian Traynor/Getty Images
Kristian Doolittle had 16 points and eight rebounds, Keanu Pinder led the offensive rebounding with five for the game to give him 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Ben Henshall and **** Webster were crucial at important moments.
Coach John Rillie said it wasn’t a coincidence that his team was playing well when his big names were healthy again.
“This weekend we had our full roster. When you’ve got your full roster at your disposal, it usually helps your situation at both ends of the floor,” he said.
“Rebounding forgives all sins, whether you are playing bad defence or bad offence. We had great pursuit and intent to control that. We have multiple guys who can go and find an extra possession for us.”
Camera IconBryce Cotton had a big game. Credit: Darrian Traynor/Getty Images
Rillie is refusing to look at the ladder ahead of the last round, saying he’s remaining focused on helping the team to win. But he knows it will take away wins to compete in the finals, and the Wildcats just won their fifth game on the road in a row.
“With where we’ll probably finish on the ladder, we’ll have to go on the road in the play-offs. I think it’ll give us a nice confidence when we get tot hat post season,” he said.

Tariffs worry Wall Street over earnings hit, inflation pressure
Tariffs worry Wall Street over earnings hit, inflation pressure
By Suzanne McGee
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Investors are bracing for a looming hit to U.S. corporate profits and pressure on inflation after President Donald Trump on Saturday signed an executive order imposing tariffs on its largest trading partners, with markets seen as not having fully factored in risks from higher levies on foreign imports.
The president’s executive order imposes a 25% tariff on goods entering the country from Mexico and Canada and 10% on imports from China, with what the White House described as “tentative plans” for these to come into effect on Tuesday at 12:01 a.m. ET.
On Friday, Trump said nothing could be done by the three countries to forestall the tariffs, although he did raise the prospect of exempting oil from Canada. The tariffs include a 10% levy on all ********* energy supplies imported by the United States.
“I do think the markets are going to react to this,” said Mark Malek, chief investment officer at Siebert Financial in New York. “Until now the market has really been on Trump’s side, but that could change and the market could challenge him for the first time.”
As rumors of the details leaked out on Saturday afternoon, some investors still clung to hopes that the process might just be brinkmanship by the White House and that until the tariffs begin to be levied on importers, there is room for the president to walk back his plan.
“With any delay in implementation, there will be some view that this is still a negotiating ploy,” said Rick Meckler, partner at Cherry Lane Investments, a family investment office in New Vernon, New Jersey.
Following his inauguration, Trump set a Saturday deadline for imposing tariffs unless Mexico and Canada moved to halt flows of ******** immigrants and the deadly opioid fentanyl into the United States.
Barclays strategists previously estimated that the tariffs could create a 2.8% drag on S&P 500 company earnings, including the projected fallout from retaliatory measures from the targeted countries.
The executive order includes a provision for Trump to increase the size and scope of the tariffs if countries affected seek to retaliate.
Goldman Sachs economists have estimated that across-the-board tariffs on Canada and Mexico would imply a 0.7% increase in core inflation and a 0.4% hit to gross domestic product.
The potential to drive up consumer prices is a particularly sensitive area for investors, who are worried about a revival in inflation causing the Federal Reserve to stop cutting interest rates. The U.S. central bank last week paused its rate-cutting cycle, while Fed Chair Jerome Powell said officials were “waiting to see what policies are enacted” with the new president.
Story Continues
Investors widely expect some kind of selloff in stocks and other higher-risk assets when markets reopen on Monday. Gene Goldman, chief investment officer at Cetera Financial Group, said the combination of high valuations, the impact of tariffs on inflation and the effects on Federal Reserve policy would contribute to declines.
With the S&P 500 near all-time highs, the index could move 3% to 5% in either direction in the short term, Evercore ISI strategists said in a note.
“This is one of these big geopolitical events that you can’t predict,” said Colin Graham, head of multi-asset strategies at Robeco in London, ahead of Saturday’s developments. “They just happen and you have to figure out afterwards what you’re going to do.”

Labor tells voters “you’ll be worse off under Dutton” in new campaign ad
Labor tells voters “you’ll be worse off under Dutton” in new campaign ad
Labor has gone after the Coalition’s history of voting against the government’s key cost-of-living measures as it firms up one of its key messages ahead of the federal election.
The government launched its latest campaign ad urging voters they’ll be “worse off under Dutton”, highlighting Peter Dutton’s opposition to the government’s revamped Stage Three tax cuts, its $300 energy bill rebate, free TAFE policies, legislated pay rise for aged care and early childhood workers, increased discounts to PBS-listed medicines, and it’s election promise to wipe 20 per cent off HECS debts.
The ad will be played on free-to-air TV, YouTube, on-demand video services and Meta platforms from Sunday evening.
Government modelling also claims the average duel-income household would be about $7200 worse off under a Coalition government.
The figures includes Labor’s energy rebate, and tax relief which would have been scrapped under the original tax cut policy with benefited high-income earners.
Camera IconLabor’s new ad campaign will begin on Sunday evening. ALP Credit: Supplied
The modelling also assumes wage growth would have only remained at 2.2 per cent, instead of the 4.4 per cent under Labor.
The Coalition, however, has said Labor’s increased spending has resulted in stickier inflation and prolonged high interest rates, with Mr Dutton vowing to cut excess spending if he wins the next election.
In recent days he has taken aim at the increase in Canberra’s public service workforce, which they claim will bloat to 36,000 employees under Labor, adding a recurring expense of about $6bn a year.
While the election must happen on or before May 17, April 12 is firming up to be the likeliest date, with Mr Albanese expected to call the federal election after the WA state election on March 8.
The government could also get at least one or even two rate cuts from the Reserve Bank, with Tuesday’s lower-than-expected inflation update increasing the likelihood of a cut when the board updates the cash rate on February 18.
If so, this would be the first rate cut since November 2020 when the cash rate was dropped to 0.1 per cent.

Cotton stars as Wildcats beat Kings in Wagstaff’s 500th
Cotton stars as Wildcats beat Kings in Wagstaff’s 500th
The Perth Wildcats have celebrated Jesse Wagstaff’s 500-game milestone in grand style, with Bryce Cotton starring in a 104-97 win over the Sydney Kings.
Cotton tallied 30 points and five steals as the Wildcats led from start to finish in Sunday’s blockbuster clash in front of more than 14,000 fans at Qudos Bank Arena.
The result saw the Wildcats (17-11) leapfrog Sydney (16-12) into third spot.
Wagstaff became just the 14th man to reach the NBL 500 club when he stepped out against the Kings.
The 38-year-old did the one-percenters as always, and finished with a three-pointer and two offensive rebounds from 10 minutes of action.
Keanu Pinder added 12 points to go with 10 rebounds, while Kristian Doolittle (16 points, eight rebounds), Dylan Windler (14 points), **** Webster (12 points) and Ben Henshall (11 points) also hit double figures.
Kouat Noi (24 points), Alex Toohey (23 points) and Cameron Oliver (22 points, 10 rebounds) were all big for the Kings, but star guard Jaylen Adams endured one of the worst performances of his professional career.
Adams picked up his third foul by early in the second quarter, and he fouled out in the opening minute of the last with just one point to his name on 0-of-3 shooting from the field.
It came just nine days after he drained 43 points in a shock loss to the Adelaide 36ers.
The Wildcats, led by young gun Henshall, made a hot start to the game.
The visitors led by 14 points late in the first quarter, but a buzzer-beating triple Shaun Bruce gave the Kings some momentum.
Toohey landed two triples to start the second term, but Cotton answered in kind as the lead started to balloon out again.
The Wildcats looked set to take a double-digit lead into half-time, before Toohey scored two baskets in the final six seconds of the term to reduce the margin to eight points.
The Wildcats won the rebound count a whopping 28-13 in the first half, with 13 of those being offensive boards for Perth.
The Kings whittled the margin down to five points in the third quarter as Oliver and Noi asserted their dominance.
But two long-range bombs from Cotton in the final 70 seconds ensured the Wildcats headed into the final break with an 85-74 advantage.
Cotton continued to torment the Kings in the last term, with the lead blowing out to 16 points midway through the quarter following another long bomb from the MVP favourite.
The Wildcats finished the match with 23 offensive rebounds compared to Sydney’s 10.

Meme Coins Do Not Create Wealth: They Destroy It
Meme Coins Do Not Create Wealth: They Destroy It
Immediately upon issuance, $ and $ meme coins surged in value, turning worthless 0s and 1s of computer code into tens of billions of .
Many in the financial media, alongside crypto devotees, claim these meme coins, and others like , Coin, and the aptly named ***** Coin, create wealth. While they have made sizable profits for countless coin issuers and traders, the amount of dollars in the financial system remains unchanged. The coins do not create wealth; they transfer it from buyers to sellers.
More importantly and not advertised by the pro-crypto bandwagon, our potential national wealth suffers as the valuations of most cryptocurrencies grow. Instead of focusing on the glamor of instant millionaires that meme coins create, we take a different direction: their impact on the economy and the citizens’ aggregate wealth.
Before expanding on those thoughts, we share a quote from John Authers of Bloomberg concerning meme coins:
The highly volatile tokens have no underlying assets to back up their value and no obvious practical purpose.
Crypto and Meme Coin Context
We start this discussion with some context to the amount of capital tied up in meme coins and the broader cryptocurrency markets.
The table below, courtesy of CoinGecko, shows the ten largest cryptocurrencies by market cap. The second graph from TradingView estimates the total value of all cryptocurrencies is roughly $3.5 trillion.
The following table, courtesy of CoinGecko, shows the top meme coins and their respective market caps. They sum up to nearly $90 billion.
Furthermore, CoinGecko estimates the total value of all meme coins as of January 21, 2025, was $123 billion.
Types Of Cryptocurrencies
Cryptocurrencies fall into four broad categories. Some cryptocurrencies, such as meme coins, have absolutely no value. However, some do serve a purpose. To help better appreciate the differences among these currencies, we share the following descriptions courtesy of the Corporate Finance Institute:
Payment- (), perhaps the most famous cryptocurrency, was the first successful example of a digital payment cryptocurrency. The purpose of a payment cryptocurrency, as the name implies, is not only as a medium of exchange but also as a purely peer-to-peer electronic cash to facilitate transactions.
Tokens– are any cryptographic asset that runs on top of another blockchain. network was the first to incorporate the concept of allowing other crypto assets to piggyback on its blockchain.
Stablecoins- are designed to provide a store of value. They maintain their value because while they are built on a blockchain, this type of cryptocurrency can be exchanged for one or more fiat currencies. So stablecoins are actually pegged to a physical currency, most commonly the US dollar or the .
Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC)– CBDCs are issued by central banks in token form or with an electronic record associated with the currency and pegged to the domestic currency of the issuing country or region.
Meme coins are a subset of the token category. These coins are often inspired by jokes, social media fads, or, as the name implies, memes.
Wikipedia defines meme coins as follows:
A meme coin is a cryptocurrency that originated from an Internet meme or has some other humorous characteristic. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with the term shitcoin, which typically refers to a cryptocurrency with little to no value, authenticity, or utility.
Meme Coins Produce Negative Value
As we wrote in the prior section and Wikipedia affirms, meme coins have zero intrinsic value and serve zero purpose. Assigning they have zero value is complimentary. Meme coins reduce wealth from society in aggregate. We think they have negative inherent value.
Meme coins and all other forms of cryptocurrency do not create dollars. are transferred into the crypto markets to buy crypto assets and sometimes transferred out upon selling. As noted earlier, about $3.5 trillion is currently in the crypto markets.
The capital or “wealth” tied up in meme coins is money not being used for other purposes. Those purposes entail many things, from gambling or vacations to productive investment or charity and billions of other productive and unproductive uses.
Less Capital For Productive Ventures
We have railed on the economy’s rising debt-to- ratio multiple times, proving that aggregate debt has been unproductive. That is not debatable. If debt in aggregate were productive, the ratio would decline, regardless of how much debt was employed.
For example, the graph below shows the dollar amount of GDP growth for five-year periods and the corresponding dollar of debt growth. Today, each new dollar of public and private debt buys 14 cents worth of growth. Before 1981, each dollar of debt resulted in more than a dollar of GDP growth.
Unproductive debt isn’t the only culprit behind slowing productivity growth. The misallocation of capital via meme coins has the same undesirable effect.
What is Productivity?
Productivity measures the leverage an economy can generate from its two primary inputs: labor and capital. Without productivity, the economic growth rate relies solely on the growth of the two primary inputs. The limited nature of labor and capital naturally leads to declining growth rates over long periods of society neglects productivity.
Leveraging labor and capital through productivity provides dynamism to an economy. Unfortunately, productivity requires work, time, investment, and sacrifice. It’s a function of countless factors, including innovation, education, government policies, and financial incentives.
The more effectively or productively we use our resources, the more economic growth per unit of resource can be attained. Thus, more wealth per capita can be generated.
Like unproductive debt, when a dollar is used to purchase a meme coin or other cryptocurrency, that is a dollar not used for productive means. Consequently, the $90 billion tied up in meme coins is not being invested into ******* research, job training, education, or AI innovation, to name a few productive uses.
Other than a good laugh, do meme coins provide benefits to society? If the answer is no, meme coins offer a good example of how unproductive capital impedes long-term economic growth, directly impacting the populace’s wealth.
Not All Tokens Are Unproductive
It’s important to note that meme coins are tokens, but not all tokens are meme coins. Some tokens are productive. They can represent a physical asset, contract, agreement, or service. In some cases, they make transacting and transferring ownership more efficient. In the process, they can make those assets more liquid.
For example, tZERO, a joint venture of Beyond and the Intercontinental Exchange Inc (NYSE:), is developing the ability to tokenize hotel rooms, sports teams, real estate, and many other assets and services. Hotel rooms, for example, are highly illiquid assets and nearly impossible for most investors to own. With tokens backing such assets, they can become more liquid. Thus, capital can more easily flow to such ventures. The ability for capital to flow more easily and cheaply makes said assets more productive.
Summary
If our nation is to continue to prosper as it has for the last 250+ years, our focus on productivity must be more of a priority today than at any time since America was a sleepy British outpost. Our resources are still vast but dwindling. We will stagnate if we continue to forego investments in productivity growth and favor investing in memes and other unproductive ventures.
Meme coins are just the tip of the iceberg representing unproductive uses of capital. We could write volumes on other examples. But given its current popularity, we use it to help spread the productivity gospel once again.
