Tottenham transfer news: Spurs beat Wolves to sign Lens defender Kevin Danso
Tottenham transfer news: Spurs beat Wolves to sign Lens defender Kevin Danso
Tottenham have signed Lens defender Kevin Danso on loan with a commitment to buy after beating Wolves to the deal.
The 26-year-old opted to move to Spurs despite having had a medical lined up in the Midlands.
Danso’s move includes the obligation to make it a permanent deal, which is reportedly worth £21m, with a five-year contract lined up in the summer.
Austria international Danso played 10 games in English football during a loan spell with Southampton in the 2019-20 season – having also spent time in the academies of Reading and MK Dons.
His arrival follows Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou repeated requests for help amid a 10-player injury crisis.
Spurs had been looking at signing attacking players but have switched to defensive targets after Radu Dragusin suffered a knee injury against Elfsborg on Thursday.
The Romanian centre-back joined Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie on the injury list, but Micky van de Ven has recently returned.
Multiple sources have explained that Spurs have looked at other central defenders, including Chelsea’s Axel Disasi and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori.

Six Nations 2025: Huw Jones hat-trick makes difference for Scotland against Italy
Six Nations 2025: Huw Jones hat-trick makes difference for Scotland against Italy
The build-up to the game was dominated by Jones’ usual centre partner, Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu, being ruled out of the championship with injury.
Tuipulotu is a world-class operator, a leader who combines both power and precision. He was a key part of Glasgow’s URC triumph last season and is a shoo-in for this summer’s Lions tour if he finds fitness in time.
However, alongside another Glasgow man in Stafford McDowall, Jones delivered a reminder of his capacity to trouble any defence in world rugby.
“Huw was outstanding today,” co-captain Finn Russell said. “I thought Stafford was really good at 12 as well.
“The backs worked really well together, created a lot of chances and if we’re going to do anything in this tournament we have to try and finish those off.”
When Jones first burst onto the international scene he had all his attacking verve, but lacked the defensive steel to go with it.
Teams targeted his channel to good effect and Jones lost his Scotland spot as a result, missing the 2019 World Cup.
He went away and worked it out, though, returning to the national team set-up a more complete package.
“Huw is such an all-round player now,” head coach Gregor Townsend said.
“He runs brilliant lines, finishes well and is a very good defender. Today he supported very well and it’s great he got those tries.”

Analysis-India budget opts for economic sugar rush over reform
Analysis-India budget opts for economic sugar rush over reform
By Aftab Ahmed and Ira Dugal
MUMBAI (Reuters) – India’s annual budget announcement was a ******* deal than usual this year: As the first full budget of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term, it will set the tone for how the world’s fifth-largest economy confronts slowing growth and sagging markets.
But the year’s top economic policy event opted mainly for short-term economic relief through middle-class tax cuts, while passing up a chance to go big on reforms needed to reignite rapid growth – once the envy of the world at more than 8%.
The budget also scaled back the government’s emphasis on capital spending and infrastructure, another key driver for India’s growth ambitions since the pandemic.
Without a strategy to regain high growth rates and assure jobs for India’s young population, the budget disappointed analysts and markets, alarmed in recent months by weak earnings growth and an exodus of foreign investors.
“India is aspiring for 8% growth but we don’t have a path to 8% – a growth strategy is not there,” said Madhavi Arora, chief economist at Emkay Global Financial Services.
The government has forecast India’s GDP growth will slip to a four-year low of 6.4% in the current financial year to March 31 and stay close to that level next year as well, compared with 8.2% in 2023-24.
While the latest tax cuts may help urban consumers, who took some steam out of the economy as weak wage growth and high living costs curtailed their spending habits, economists see deeper problems that need to be addressed.
“Eight percent will require far deeper interventions in agricultural markets, human capital and ease of doing business,” said Dhiraj Nim, an economist at ANZ Research.
Modi, who returned to power in July of last year with a weaker-than-expected mandate, has turned to appeasing politically important constituencies in the months since the election, analysts said. His party has reversed agricultural trade policies to favour farmers, offered cash handouts to women and, now, cut taxes for the middle class.
Analysts noted that this is not the first time, however, that Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party failed to push economic reforms, which also got brushed aside in his previous two terms when the party had won more decisively and had greater political capital.
“In 2019, the BJP got more than 300 seats and had a window (for reforms),” said Amit Ranjan, research fellow at Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), National University of Singapore.
“But the government gave in to the needs of electoral politics as the government knows reforms do not immediately benefit the large section of voters.”
Story Continues
In 2015, Modi let lapse an executive order making it easier for businesses to buy land, after failing to win support from opposition parties in the parliament. And in 2020, both houses of parliament approved new labour codes, but they have yet to be implemented across all states.
Plans for large-scale privatisations of state-owned enterprises, aiming to reinvigorate them by reducing government involvement, have also faltered, with the government now opting to put fresh funds into ailing state firms.
RISKING STAGNATION
The case for reforms, however, has not come just from analysts and economists, but from government leaders as well.
On Friday, India’s chief economic adviser, V. Anantha Nageswaran, made a pitch for rapidly easing rules covering land, labour and factories, among other areas, arguing that government should “get out of the way” as one way to push up growth.
“Business as usual carries a high risk of economic growth stagnation, if not economic stagnation,” Nageswaran said in a report presented a day ahead of the budget.
The tax cuts’ 1 trillion rupee ($11.56 billion) price tag also reduced the government’s leeway to further ramp up spending on infrastructure.
The budget includes 11.2 trillion rupees for capital expenditure in 2025-26, close to the level of spending planned for the current year, although actual outlays fell short of that due to delays linked to national and state elections.
“We think that capital expenditure and infrastructure development will provide a longer-term, longer-lasting boost to growth than things like tax measures,” said Christian de Guzman, senior vice president and lead sovereign analyst for India at Moody’s Ratings.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has raised capital expenditure sharply in the hope of fashioning an investment-led recovery but the strategy is yet to pay off, with job creation and wage growth remaining weak.
The slower increase in capital spending knocked the share prices of capital goods firms lower on Saturday, while the broader market ended marginally weaker.
“At the margin, there is a tilt towards supporting consumption through tax cuts for middle class households, relative to the public capex push seen over the last four years,” said Sonal Varma, Nomura chief economist, India and Asia ex-Japan.
“This shift takes into account the difficulty in executing public capex projects due to budget and institutional capacity constraints,” she said.

Roar break ALW losing streak as teenager sinks Phoenix
Roar break ALW losing streak as teenager sinks Phoenix
Brisbane have ended a three-match losing streak, with teen sensation Grace Kuliamu securing a 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix.
The 17-year-old scored her sixth A-League Women career goal in the second half in front of a crowd of 2866 at Perry Park on Sunday to take the Roar to fourth spot on the ladder.
Wellington are eighth and will rue a suite of missed opportunities.
The Roar had slid down the ladder in the five weeks leading into the clash after being in the top two and one of the title favourites. Four losses in five matches had them in sixth spot leading into Sunday’s fixture.
The Phoenix had won three of their previous five games.
Brisbane were without defender Holly McQueen due to suspension, and it got worse when back Leia Varley was replaced after 30 minutes with an ankle injury.
Matildas forward Sharn Freier also missed the match with an ankle complaint.
The visitors dominated the opening half, with attacking midfielder Alyssa Whinham the outstanding player on the field.
Whinham created plenty and seemed to be everywhere. Her four shots on goal were not as dangerous as she would have liked, and the hosts hung on.
Wellington led the shots on goal 8-2 and corners 6-0 at the break.
Brisbane captain Tameka Yallop had an early shot, but it was well blocked as the Roar struggled to create chances.
New Zealand international Grace Jale was also at her creative best with two nifty back-heels in the first half.
Jale also set up Whinham, who shot wide early in the second half.
Kuilamu almost scored when the dynamic striker turned on a dime and fired a right-foot shot from just outside the box that hit the woodwork.
It took until the 62nd minute for the Roar to have their first corner, with Kuilamu rising high to head home after a pinpoint curling corner from Matildas star Yallop.
Kuilamu has scored five goals this season and after playing just 15 ALW games in total has announced herself as a star of the future.
Yallop was denied by the leg of goalkeeper Carolina Vilao in the 71st minute after a sublime pass by Kuilamu.
Jale shot just wide for the visitors soon afterwards, but the Roar dominated the second half, with Yallop, Kuilamu and Laini Freier all showcasing their class.

Chelsea v West Ham: Hammers boss Graham Potter has no ill feeling after Blues sack
Chelsea v West Ham: Hammers boss Graham Potter has no ill feeling after Blues sack
West Ham boss Graham Potter says getting sacked by Chelsea was “maybe the best thing that happened to me”.
Potter takes the Hammers back to his old club on Monday (20:00 GMT) – his fourth Premier League game in charge since being appointed in January.
The former Brighton boss was dismissed by Chelsea in April 2023, less than seven months after replacing the sacked Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge in September 2022.
However, Potter said he had no “bad feeling” towards Chelsea and wanted to learn from the experience.
“You know in a football life you’re going to get ups and downs,” added the 49-year-old, who won 12 of his 31 games in charge of Chelsea in all competitions.
“I didn’t want to lose my job. But at the same time I look back now and maybe it’s the best thing that happened to me.
“Maybe the next 10-20 years is going to be great because of the experience I’ve had.
“I just look at it as a learning experience. I’ve got no bad feelings towards Chelsea, I’ve still got a lot of good relationships with the people there.
“But I’m just looking forward to the journey I’m on now with West Ham at this great club and getting that connection with the supporters, working with the team and building something that we’re really excited about and proud about here.”

Richie Wellens apologises for ‘stupid’ Ange Postecoglou comment
Richie Wellens apologises for ‘stupid’ Ange Postecoglou comment
Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens has apologised for a “stupid comment” he made about Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Stockport.
Asked in a post-match interview whether injuries had played a part in the loss, Wellens said: “I’m not going to make excuses, I’m not Ange Postecoglou.”
Tottenham have slipped to 16th in the Premier League amid an injury crisis that has left them without nine first-team players for Sunday’s trip to Brentford.
Later on Saturday, Wellens withdrew the comments, saying he was “deeply embarrassed”.
He said: “After today’s game, I was asked about the injuries within our squad and, without thinking, I made a stupid comment about Tottenham Hotspur.
“That comment was brought to my attention later in the evening and, having watched my interview back, I am deeply embarrassed and regret what I said.
“At Leyton Orient we have a strong relationship with Tottenham Hotspur and it was never my intention to say anything that would jeopardise that. Their manager, Ange Postecoglou, is a world-class coach and I want to apologise for my comments and wish Spurs all the very best for the second half of the season.”
Tottenham have a close relationship with Orient, with academy players Jamie Donley and Josh Keeley on loan at the club until the end of the season, while former Spurs captain Harry Kane had a loan spell there early in his career.
Tottenham women also regularly play their home games at Orient’s Brisbane Road ground, which is under five miles from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Wellens has been in charge of Orient since March 2022 and led them to the League Two title the following year.
Their defeat against Stockport was their first in 12 matches, though they remain in the play-off places on goal difference.
They take on Premier League champions Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round next weekend.

Greece issues Santorini seismic activity warning
Greece issues Santorini seismic activity warning
Greek authorities have advised people on the Aegean island of Santorini to shut schools, avoid two small ports and refrain from gathering in indoor spaces after increased seismic activity.
A series of tremors up to a 4.3 magnitude were registered on Friday and Saturday in the area between the volcanic island of Santorini and Amorgos, the civil protection ministry said in a statement on Saturday afternoon.
The ministry said the activity was not linked to volcanic activity and was receding, but experts had proposed precautionary measures including the school closures on Monday.
They also urged people to not access or remain at the small port of Ammoudi and the harbour of Fira, which serves mainly cruise ships.
Earthquakes measuring between 2.8 and 4.5 struck the area on Sunday morning, according to the Athens Geodynamic institute, without causing damage.
Greece sits on multiple fault lines and is often rattled by earthquakes.
Santorini is one of Greece’s top tourist destinations.
One of the largest eruptions in history, about 1600 BC, formed the island in its current shape.
The last eruption in the area was in 1950.

Formula 1 auction record: £42.75m for Mercedes driven by Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio
Formula 1 auction record: £42.75m for Mercedes driven by Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio
A Mercedes ‘streamliner’ raced by Formula 1 legends Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio has sold for a record £42.75m (€51.155m) at auction.
The silver W196 R Stromlinienwagen was driven by Argentina’s five-time F1 champion Fangio as he won the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix.
Britain’s Moss piloted the car at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza the same year, setting the fastest lap at an average speed of 134mph before retiring.
The Silver Arrow was sold by RM Sotheby’s at the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart, Germany, on behalf of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), and becomes the most expensive grand prix car ever sold.
The previous record was held by another ex-Fangio Mercedes W196 from 1954 that went for £19.6m after commission and taxes at Goodwood in 2013.
The W196 R, one of only four in existence, had an estimated price of more than €50m with the final hammer going down at €46.5m. A buyer’s premium is included in the final price.
That makes it the second most valuable car to change hands at auction, behind a 1955 Mercedes 300SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe sportscar that sold for €135m (£113m) in May 2022.
“It’s a beautiful car, it’s a very historic car, it’s just a little bit outside our scope window,” said IMS curator Jason Vansickle.

Wife calls to ban gambling ads after husband’s £85k debt
Wife calls to ban gambling ads after husband’s £85k debt
“We are dealing with a predatory industry here, they are putting money over lives.”
Tracy O’Shaughnessy wants to see the end of gambling adverts, a mission spurred on after her husband got £85,000 in debt.
“Gambling ads are normalised and as an affected other (someone who experiences negative impacts or harm as a result of someone else’s behaviour), I find it really triggering. I sit there and I think it’s not fun, it’s ruined my life,” she said.
In her local area of Merton there isn’t any escape either, as Tracy says there are seven betting shops on her high street.
A gambler for more than 30 years, Tracy said her husband must have lost millions over that *******.
“The mounting debts, the lies – it really took a toll on my mental health.
“I was struggling to keep up with the bills, we nearly lost our home because we couldn’t pay the rent and bailiffs would come,” she said.
As a result of her personal experiences, Tracy is an affected other lead at the charity GamLearn – a lived experience and recovery network – which supports those who have experienced gambling-related harm.
“In some cases, gambling has taken loved ones away from families,” said Tracy.
“I think ads should be banned, we don’t need to see them.”
Haringey Council is pushing for a national ban on gambling advertising [BBC]
On Thursday, Tracy attended an event to announce Haringey’s membership to the Coalition to End Gambling Ads (CEGA), a group of organisations committed to reducing gambling harm by stopping it from being promoted.
The north London council is pushing for a national ban on gambling advertising, and claim it is the first council in the country to do so.
According to the Gambling Commission – which regulates gambling and gaming laws – Haringey is fourth only to boroughs Brent, Enfield and Newham, for having the most licensed gambling premises in the capital.
Haringey Council has said there were 8,000 people experiencing gambling harms in the borough, with about 25,000 others, like family and friends, affected more widely.
The Labour-run council said signing the commitment put pressure on the government to restrict gambling advertising and the negative influence this can have on individuals and their families.
‘Robust protections’
In October, Lisa Nandy, secretary of state for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), told Parliament the government was “committed to strengthening protections” to ensure people could “continue to enjoy gambling as a pastime without the harms that can ensue from problem gambling”.
She added the government would be listening to people’s experiences.
“That way, we can strike the right balance and ensure not only that the industry, which brings joy to many people, continues to thrive, but that we have the most robust protections in place to prevent problem gambling,” she said.
This is something Will Prochaska, the director CEGA, said did not go hand-in-hand.
“The evidence is clear, we can’t grow the gambling industry and protect people at the same time – we urgently need Lisa Nandy to grasp this principle,” he added.
A DCMS spokesperson said it recognised the impact harmful gambling could have on individuals and their families, and reconfirmed its commitment to strengthening protections for those at risk.
“The industry has a clear task to further raise standards to ensure that gambling advertising does not exacerbate harm, and this work will be monitored closely,” the spokesperson said.
“The government has already announced plans to bring in a statutory levy on gambling profits to generate £100m for the research, prevention and treatment of gambling-related harms.”
The Gambling Commission said targeted action around advertising and sponsorship was necessary, especially to “better ensure that children and people who may be vulnerable have significantly reduced exposure”.
‘Much needed change’
Haringey Council has estimated it pays more than £8m in associated gambling harm-related costs every year, including homelessness, adult social care, NHS costs and unpaid rents.
A spokesperson said it worked with communities to offer support to those affected by gambling harms, such as early intervention work in schools and help with debt and refinancing.
In applauding Haringey for being the first council to join CEGA, Mr Prochaska said: “Councils don’t have adequate powers to protect their citizens from the predatory gambling industry, but they do have a powerful voice nationally.
“It’s important now that more councils follow Haringey’s lead.”
Councillor Ajda Ovat, cabinet member for communities at Haringey, said the council recognised the need for “further collaboration to address gambling harm on a larger scale and hope many other councils will follow in our footsteps and bring about much needed change”.
Haringey Council said it worked with communities to offer gambling-harms support [BBC]
In Sir Sadiq Khan’s 2021 mayoral manifesto, he pledged to ban gambling advertising on the Tube and other Transport for London (TfL) services.
Speaking to the BBC on Friday, the Mayor of London said: “We all know the impact gambling can have on young, vulnerable individuals and families.
“The reason why it’s taking longer than we would like is because unfortunately, there is no national guidance.
“When it came to us banning adverts to do with foods high in ****, sugar and salt, there were national guidelines – there aren’t when it comes to gambling.”
After 36 years of addiction, Tracy said her husband was doing well and in recovery.
“People need to understand the devastation this addiction causes. Gambling adverts need to be banned,” she added.
A spokesperson from the Gambling Commission said: “All marketing of gambling products must be undertaken in a socially responsible manner.
“Our views on advertising are set out in our 2023 Gambling Act advice to the then government.
“This clearly states that targeted action around advertising and sponsorship is necessary, especially to better ensure that children and people who may be vulnerable have significantly reduced exposure.”

25 Things that Make You Uniquely Greek
25 Things that Make You Uniquely Greek

Several characteristics and nuances are uniquely Greek. Greeks indeed stand apart from other nationalities in many aspects of everyday life.
To a foreigner, some of those may seem inconceivable, absurd even, but a Greek wouldn’t feel Greek unless he abides by certain “rules.”
So here are a few things (many belong to the past) that are said to make someone a real Greek or happen in Greece only!
Uniquely Greek things
1. Never eat dinner before 10:00 pm (especially when dining out).
2. In your neighborhood, there is at least one street called “Eleftherios Venizelos street.” Even the Athens airport is called that.
3. You run several red lights to get to a coffee shop and then stare lazily at your frappe of Freddo for three hours.
4. You travel abroad to escape from Greek attitudes for a while and during your trip, you look for other Greeks to hang out with.
5. You applaud the pilot when landing.
6. You are not surprised when your 43-year-old buddy tells you he lives with his mom.
7. You consider it normal that someone gets a four-year university degree in 12 years.
8. You never have enough cash for necessities, but you always manage to find money for luxuries.
9. You hate public employees and call them lazy, but you dream of becoming one.
10. You go to church and pray to Jesus and the Virgin Mary on Sundays, but later you curse at them during the football game.
11. You light a ********** before you enter the gym. And one as soon as you get out.
12. You wonder what the white lines are in pedestrian crossings.
13. You jog five kilometers but you take the elevator to the first floor.
14. You get in a traffic jam at 6:00 am on a Sunday.
15. You brag about what a womanizer your son is, but you claim your daughter is a virgin.
16. You wonder why people in the rest of the world don’t drink frappe.
17. You always honk to show the world you own a car.
18. When other drivers honk at you, you swear at them.
19. You paid 50,000 euros for your over-priced car, but you think the valet is a thief when he asks for 5 euros to park it.
20. You insist that the “evil eye” has been scientifically proven.
21. You believe that the rest of the world envies you for being Greek.
22. You are certain there is an international conspiracy to destroy your language.
23. You root for politicians even though you call them thieves in the next sentence.
24. You wonder how other countries survive when they don’t have kiosks in every corner.
25. You feel a burst of national pride when you hear the word “malakas” in a Hollywood movie.
And just to clarify, this is all in good fun—nothing here should be taken too seriously. These “Greek traits” are not being promoted, and, in fact, some of them might be better off not existing. But hey, a little humor never hurt anyone!
