  1. OpenAI launches ‘deep research’ tool that it says can match research analyst | OpenAI OpenAI launches ‘deep research’ tool that it says can match research analyst | OpenAI OpenAI has stepped up its development of artificial intelligence agents by announcing a new tool that crafts reports which it claims can match the output of a research analyst. The ChatGPT developer said the new tool, “deep research”, “accomplishes in 10 minutes what would take a human many hours”. The announcement comes just a couple of days after the San Francisco-based company said it would speed up product releases in response to advances made by OpenAI’s ******** rival DeepSeek. “Deep research” is an AI agent – the term for a system that can carry out tasks on users’ behalf – and is powered by a version of OpenAI’s latest cutting-edge model, o3. OpenAI said deep research would find, analyse and synthesise hundreds of online sources to create a “comprehensive report”, sifting through “massive amounts” of text, images and PDFs to do so. The company said its tool, which will be available as a button in ChatGPT, is a “significant step” towards its goal of developing artificial general intelligence, a theoretical term referring to systems that match or exceed humans at any intellectual task. Last month, OpenAI unveiled Operator, an AI agent that it claims can book a table at a restaurant or carry out an online shop based on a photo of a shopping list – although is only available in a preview version in the US. In a demo video released on Sunday, OpenAI showed deep research analysing the market for translation apps. The company said the tool will take between five and 30 minutes to complete each task and will cite the source for each claim it makes. OpenAI said deep research was for professionals who work in areas such as finance, science and engineering, but it can also examine purchases such as cars and furniture. It is based on o3, OpenAI’s latest “reasoning” model, which takes longer to process queries than conventional models and has yet to be released in full publicly. It comes after OpenAI announced the release on Friday of another derivation of o3 – a free slimmed-down version called o3-mini. The power of the full o3 model was flagged in the International AI Safety Report published last week. The study’s lead author, Yoshua Bengio, said its capabilities “could have profound implications for AI risks”. He said o3 had surprised experts, including himself, with its performance in a key abstract reasoning test. skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Business Today Get set for the working day – we’ll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. It is not available in the *** and Europe. Andrew Rogoyski, a director at the Institute for People-Centred AI at the University of Surrey, said there was a danger that humans could use outputs from tools such as deep research verbatim and not carry out retrospective checks on what they produce. “There’s a fundamental problem with knowledge-intensive AIs and that is it’ll take a human many hours and a lot of work to check whether the machine’s analysis is good,” Rogoyski said. 2. Getir CEO says he has been removed as power struggle continues Getir CEO says he has been removed as power struggle continues A delivery driver of the Turkish delivery service “Getir” rides his bicycle. Michael Kappeler | picture alliance | Getty Images The CEO of Turkish grocery delivery company Getir said on Monday he had been removed from his position, weeks after a shareholder meeting approved an updated restructuring plan that was disputed by one of the firm’s co-founders. Two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Batuhan Gultakan, chief executive since 2022, left his role on Thursday, the latest twist in a struggle for control at Getir. “Yes, last week the Turkish Board of Directors, which consists of the sons of Getir founder Nazım Salur, terminated my duty – without any reason. I did not leave myself,” Gultakan told Reuters on Monday. One of the sources said that Gultakan retained the full support of Getir’s largest shareholder Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi state investment fund, adding it could move to reinstate him. Getir declined to comment. Mubadala and Salur were not immediately available to comment. Getir was once valued at more than $10 billion but has been bruised by slower than expected demand. It agreed a restructuring plan with Mubadala in June. Under the deal, Getir closed its overseas operations to secure $250 million in financing from the $300 billion fund. It also agreed to separate non-core businesses from profitable local grocery delivery operations, which Mubadala would buy. The remaining subsidiaries would be placed in a structure controlled by Getir’s founders, Salur and Serkan Borancili. However, last month Mubadala said Getir’s independent directors had unanimously approved an “alternative transaction” proposed by the wealth fund, without detailing the plan. Salur called the new plan an “******** coup” and said the founders had applied to the Enterprise Chamber of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal. They will also take legal action in Turkey and Britain, Salur said. Dutch newspaper FD reported that the Amsterdam court rejected the founders’ appeal. The court did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Mubadala previously told Reuters it promoted its plan after Getir’s founders “demonstrated an inability” to complete a June agreement for funding and splitting the company in two. 3. De’Aaron Fox traded to the Spurs, Zach LaVine to Kings in multi-team deal: Source De’Aaron Fox traded to the Spurs, Zach LaVine to Kings in multi-team deal: Source De’Aaron Fox is headed to the San Antonio Spurs in a multi-team deal that’s sending Chicago’s Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings, a team source told The Athletic. Kevin Huerter, Zach Collins and Tre Jones will head to the Chicago Bulls as part of the deal. Jordan McLaughlin will go to the Spurs. The Kings also are acquiring three first-rounders and three second-rounders in the trade, league sources said. But one of the firsts is a Hornets 2025 top-14 protected pick, which almost surely won’t convey, instead becoming their 2026 and 2027 seconds, league sources said. So the final draft tally on the Fox trade for the Kings will presumably be five seconds and two firsts (San Antonio’s 2027 first and Minnesota’s 2031 first). The move pairs Fox with French sensation Victor Wembanyama, last season’s rookie of the year. The Kings decided to field trade offers for the 27-year-old Fox over concerns about his long-term future in Sacramento, as The Athletic reported last week. It’s been a productive but rocky season for Fox and the Kings, the last of his eight with the franchise that drafted him fifth in 2017. He departs averaging a team-high 25.0 points on nearly 47 percent shooting, ranking second on the Kings in assists, third in rebounds and first in steals. GO DEEPER Why struggling Kings have entered the danger zone around De’Aaron Fox’s future But his 3-point percentage has careened back to 32.2 percent after rising to 36.9 percent a season ago and his signature fourth-quarter flurries weren’t as regular or impactful. The reigning Clutch Player of the Year dragged Sacramento across the finish line several times in its resurgent 46-win and 48-win seasons, the first two under then-head coach Mike Brown, but everything abruptly came to a December halt in Brown’s third season. It was actually a clutch Fox blunder that became the signature event in Brown’s stunning dismissal, generating an extra ripple effect that only sped up Fox’s departure. On Dec. 26, protecting a three-point lead over the Pistons with under 10 seconds left, Fox fell asleep defensively, gave up an open 3 in a no 3s scenario. He compounded the mistake with a desperation foul, gifting the Pistons a comeback win that capped a catastrophic 0-5 homestand and dropped the Kings to a disappointing 13-18. JADEN IVEY 4-POINT PLAY FOR THE WIN Pistons win 114-113 pic.twitter.com/9wuXDyj85V — NBA (@NBA) December 27, 2024 In the aftermath, Brown ripped Fox for the mistake postgame and the organization decided to fire Brown the following afternoon, never explaining the decision publicly, which turned the spotlight onto Fox as many speculated about his involvement. The sloppy timing and lack of organizational accountability only grew frustration within Fox that had been building about the instability and general stagnation in Sacramento, league sources confirmed. He’d made it clear in both his refusal to sign an extension this past summer and his transparent public comments to The Athletic and others about his desire to be on a perennial contender that his eyes were wandering. The Kings rebounded with an inspired seven-game win streak under interim head coach Doug Christie and, still at 24-24 after some recent struggles, are in the mix for a Play-In spot in a crowded pocket of the Western Conference. But Fox clearly has the ******* picture in mind and made it obvious to the front office that he views his future elsewhere. With 1 1/2 seasons still left on Fox’s contract, the Kings decided to strike now, before the value possibly diminishes this upcoming summer. For the Spurs, this is the first high-priced personnel strike of the Wembanyama era, bringing in a legitimate perimeter co-star in his prime to speed up the rebuild process. Wembanyama is averaging 24.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and a stunning 4.0 blocks and 1.1 steals in a spectacular second season, already earning his first All-Star nod and well on his way to All-NBA and Defensive Player of the Year honors. The Spurs improved at the margins around him this summer, adding veterans Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes to aid a young core that now includes Stephon Castle, drafted fourth in June and protected in these talks with the Kings. The Spurs are 21-25, on the fringe of the conference Play-In mix, and now have an elite scoring guard in Fox to integrate for a possible late-season push, but, more importantly, grow together for the next half-decade. What Fox brings to the Spurs The bold move comes at an opportune time for San Antonio, who desperately needed to add a running mate for Wembanyama that simply wasn’t there with the likes of Chris Paul or Devin Vassell. An offensive-minded, proficient pick-and-roll partner is exactly what the doctor ordered for the second-year Frenchman — and Fox consistently driving into the teeth of defense with a trailing Wembanyama could be devastating for opposing teams. Over the last few seasons, Fox has improved drastically as a ball handler, going from a 65th percentile pick-and-roll ball handler in 2021 to the 91st this season, scoring an impressive 1.067 points per possession, according to Synergy tracking data. The Spurs also have a number of quality floor spacers — Barnes, Vassell and Julian Champagnie are all shooting above 36 percent from 3 on at least three attempts per game. — Kelly Iko, staff writer Why the Bulls are moving on from LaVine LaVine is having a resurgent season after appearing in only 25 games last season due to a right foot surgery. In 42 games for the Bulls, he averaged 24 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists over 34 minutes per game. LaVine altered his game this season to align with the Bulls’ preferred playing style. In addition to being healthy, he became the most efficient version of himself as a result of the Bulls playing at a faster pace, increasing their number of 3-point attempts to rank second in the NBA and emphasizing quicker decisions with the ball. LaVine has shot 51.1 percent from the field and 44.6 percent on 7.3 3-pointers per game. Both percentages are career highs. But with the Bulls committed to retooling their roster and charting a different path, LaVine no longer fit into the organization’s plans. He turns 30 in March and has two years remaining on his contract, with the final year being a $49 million player option. LaVine played the past 7 1/2 seasons in Chicago after spending his first three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was named an All-Star in 2021 and 2022, and the Bulls rewarded him with a five-year, $215 million contract extension in the 2022 offseason. The Bulls committed to LaVine as their best player and teamed him with DeMar DeRozan, Nikola Vučević, Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso at the start of the 2021-22 season. Chicago’s front office, led by chief basketball executive Artūras Karnišovas, built the nucleus to be a perennial playoff contender, but the Bulls qualified for the postseason only once with that core, losing to Milwaukee in five games in 2022. With LaVine in the lineup, the Bulls compiled a 174-242 record since 2017-18. Trade discussions centered on LaVine have been par for the course for at least the past two seasons. The Bulls and LaVine acknowledged they were open to a trade early in the 2023-24 season, and LaVine had long been rumored to be a trade candidate before that. It appeared the Bulls were on the verge of trading LaVine last summer when they began stripping their roster of veteran players. Chicago traded Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Josh Giddey and sent DeRozan to the Sacramento Kings for Chris Duarte, two second-round draft picks, cash and a trade exception. At the team’s media day in September, however, Karnišovas said the Bulls weren’t finished making moves. LaVine, given his age and contract, was always the next logical player to be traded. He is not quite the athletic marvel he was when he claimed back-to-back Slam Dunk Contest championships in 2015 and 2016, but he still ranks among the NBA’s elite athletes. He remains a high flyer, a blur in transition and a strong finisher at the rim. But his shooting ability is what will allow him to age gracefully. He’s shooting 44.7 percent on 2.6 catch-and-shoot 3s per game this season. If that holds, it will be the seventh time in his career that he’s shot 42 percent or better on at least two catch-and-shoot 3-pointers per game. LaVine became the Bulls’ all-time leader in 3-pointers made this season, passing Kirk Hinrich. With 10,056 points, LaVine finished his Bulls tenure sixth on the franchise’s all-time scoring list, between Jerry Sloan and Chet Walker. — Darnell Mayberry, senior NBA writer How LaVine will fit in Sacramento LaVine joins the Kings in the midst of a career season, averaging 24 points per game on 51 percent shooting and nearly 45 percent from 3. He doesn’t provide as much playmaking or straight line transition speed as Fox, but should give the Kings’ offense an equally potent jolt in a different way. Sacramento enters the week with the league’s seventh-best offense (115.2 rating). They traded away their point guard, but have Malik Monk and Domantas Sabonis to control much of the offense while LaVine and his former Bulls teammate, DeMar DeRozan, can operate as scorers and play-finishers around them. Keegan Murray is still there to stretch the floor. This team should score a bunch of points. How will they get stops? That’s the greater concern. Fox was a high steals disrupter and at least a capable perimeter piece of what was otherwise a shaky defense. LaVine is worse on that end and now the 17th-ranked defense in the NBA looks even more vulnerable. — Anthony Slater, senior writer (Photo: Thearon W. 4. Former PlayStation Boss Is Optimistic About Xbox’s Multiplatform Strategy Former PlayStation Boss Is Optimistic About Xbox’s Multiplatform Strategy Microsoft has embarked on a new multiplatform direction for several of its Xbox games, and former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden believes that this new initiative could work in the company’s favor if handled correctly–much like it has for *****. Layden believes that Microsoft can benefit from having a wider market to sell its games to as part of its new multiplatform strategy, but the downside to this is that it could possibly make it harder for the company to attract more people to its platform. “Multiplatform is a strategy, particularly in a world where the cost of development is increasing dramatically,” Layden said to YouTube channel Kiwi Talks. “Multiplatform means widening your addressable market, as the marketing guys say. How do you create the fear of missing out, trying to do that by bringing everyone to your platform? Saying, ‘If you’re not here you’re missing out,’ but if it’s available on all platforms, that’s one of your marketing tactics. You can’t say it’s only available here if it’s available everywhere. So it’s a balancing act, right? I’m increasing my addressable market, that’s good. I’m making it harder to sell only on my platform.” As Layden noted, there was precedent for this shift in business tactics, as following the launch and poor sales of the Dreamcast, ***** dropped out of the console hardware race to focus on developing and publishing video games. “We’ve seen it before. I mean I was in the business when ***** brought their Dreamcast titles to PlayStation 2. And in time, ***** became a software-only company and have been a great transformation in that respect,” Layden said. Microsoft has two big games on the way to PS5 consoles this year. Last year it was confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would reach that platform several months after its Xbox and PC launch, and last week, the company revealed that Forza Horizon 5 will also race onto PS5 in spring. In terms of hardware, Xbox Series X|S sales are reportedly behind the Xbox One at the same point in both of their lifecycles, while the PS5 is outpacing the PS4. The good news for Microsoft is that its multiplatform approach appears to be paying off as it was apparently the number-one video game publisher in December 2024 thanks partly to its Call of Duty games. 5. Microsoft Phone Link will soon make it easier to move on from your old phone Microsoft Phone Link will soon make it easier to move on from your old phone Another improvement is spotted for Phone Link It will soon be easier to unlink handsets The app has been regularly updated in recent months The Phone Link app that’s part of Windows lets you sync data, texts, and calls between the desktop operating system and a mobile device – and a new upgrade for the tool is being tested that makes it easier to swap between handsets in Phone Link. As per tipster @phantomofearth (via Windows Latest), some users now have the option to unlink a connected iPhone or Android phone from Phone Link, right from the Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices page in Windows Settings. At the moment, you need to head into your Microsoft account settings page on the web to manage this – so it potentially saves a lot of clicking around and logging in. Previously, an unlink button was available in the Phone Link app itself, but it was removed a while ago. One obvious reason why you would want to do this is when you’re upgrading your phone, and anything that makes switching phones more straightforward is welcome – what with all the other data transfer jobs involved. Regular upgrades The Cross Device Experience Host (Manage mobile devices) app is getting the option to easily remove a mobile device from your account, a nice addition! pic.twitter.com/Ce0JtgGdp3February 2, 2025 The options you get through Phone Link depend on the handset you’re using. Both iPhones and Android phones are able to connect to Phone Link, though you get the most features with the best Samsung Galaxy phones. Another feature currently in testing is an iPhone info panel to match the one for Android devices, which can be viewed right inside the Start menu. This all follows on from regular upgrades to Phone Link that we’ve seen over the last year or so. Quite how long it’s going to take for the improved unlinking feature to roll out to everyone remains to be seen – and it might get one or two other tweaks along the way – but it shouldn’t be too long before it shows up in Windows. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Of course you get a wealth of syncing and integration features if you’ve got an iPhone and a Mac working together, which is the high bar Microsoft is working towards with Phone Link on Windows – with more upgrades likely to be on the way. 8. WNBA free-agency chaos: Why did so many All-Stars move for one-year contracts? WNBA free-agency chaos: Why did so many All-Stars move for one-year contracts? Executives around the WNBA largely expected this offseason’s market to serve as a tune-up for next winter. At the start of the offseason, only two non-rookie contract players had deals that extended past 2025. Seismic change loomed. But after an avalanche of moves, significant shifts have come an offseason early as a hectic week of free agency is reshaping the upcoming season. In six days, 10 multi-time All-Stars — Satou Sabally, Brittney Griner, Alyssa Thomas, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Brionna Jones, DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard, Tina Charles and Courtney Vandersloot — changed teams via trade or the open market. Veterans who had only played for one team, including Griner (11 years in Phoenix), Thomas (11 years in Connecticut) and Loyd (10 years in Seattle), are with different franchises. Plum had spent her career only with the Aces, and Sabally was a five-year mainstay in Dallas. Yet, they’ll all be wearing new uniforms in 2025. And maybe only for 2025. All of the star players so far in free agency have signed one-year deals, which means they’ll be back on the market next year. The short-term contracts allow them to maximize their long-term earning potential. GO DEEPER Grading and analyzing every WNBA free agency signing: Brittney Griner, Kelsey Plum, Alyssa Thomas on the move An economic windfall is expected to hit the league in 2026. Assuming there isn’t a work stoppage, a new collective bargaining agreement will almost assuredly feature higher player salaries and a league salary-cap spike. A new media rights deal that will pay the WNBA an average of $200 million a season over the next 11 years is expected to be a key economic driver. A season from now, players likely will return to inking multiyear deals at higher rates. But by changing teams in 2025, they can get a sense for their new franchises and see how front offices tailor rosters to their strengths before committing long-term. No situation is entirely predictable, but the decision to try out new situations now, and not in the first year of a multiyear agreement, should help players make more informed decisions in 12 months. In the short term, stars on new teams can gather information on their new teams this season while also maintaining future leverage. These bold moves indicate a new era for WNBA players, who have more agency than ever in their decisions to play at their preferred destinations. Historically, stars were largely tethered to the teams that drafted them. Trade requests were relatively rare. Stars like Chelsea Gray and Candace Parker changed teams in recent seasons, but no multi-time All-Stars were traded in 2021 and 2022. In the last three seasons, including this offseason, seven multi-time All-Stars have been dealt. “That’s just the evolution of the league and where we’re seeing basketball and women’s sports going,” Loyd said. “There’s definitely a lot more freedom and things happening.” Certainly, teams that took big swings — Phoenix, Atlanta and Los Angeles especially — hope they can build on the foundation they laid this past week. But the short-term contracts mean teams took risks with these transactions. The Dream, who haven’t had a winning record since 2018, hope adding Jones and Griner will provide them not only a shot at a top-four playoff seed this season, but also with a significant advantage next winter in talks. The Mercury surely want their big three of Sabally, Thomas and Kahleah Copper — potentially Big Four if Diana Taurasi returns for the 2025 season— to be intact for years to come. Led by Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell, the Fever already have title aspirations, and the veteran additions of Howard and Bonner could serve as missing pieces to the puzzle. GO DEEPER WNBA free-agency winners and losers: How did the Fever, Valkyries and others fare? The benefits of incumbency could give teams a head-start in negotiations next offseason. But even franchises like the Chicago Sky and Dallas Wings, who aren’t expected to be in title contention, made moves (Chicago added Vandersloot, Kia Nurse and Bec Allen, while the Wings acquired DiJonai Carrington, NaLyssa Smith and Ty Harris) that could help them become a more appealing destination for free agents in 2026. More madness is bound to strike next January. More coupling, and recoupling, of stars will occur. Unrivaled, the new winter 3×3 professional winter league, was an epicenter for WNBA gossip and deal-making. It will be a hub next year, too, with almost every Unrivaled player in the inaugural season hitting the market. This offseason was a reminder there should be no surprises when a franchise centerpiece looks elsewhere. Change, even from players who have historically avoided it, is on the table for everyone. 10. NYT Strands today: hints, spangram and answers for Monday, February 3 NYT Strands today: hints, spangram and answers for Monday, February 3 Table of Contents Table of Contents How to play Strands Hint for today’s Strands puzzle Today’s Strand answers Strands is a brand new daily puzzle from the New York Times. A trickier take on the classic word search, you’ll need a keen eye to solve this puzzle. Like Wordle, Connections, and the Mini Crossword, Strands can be a bit difficult to solve some days. There’s no shame in needing a little help from time to time. If you’re stuck and need to know the answers to today’s Strands puzzle, check out the solved puzzle below. How to play Strands You start every Strands puzzle with the goal of finding the “theme words” hidden in the grid of letters. Manipulate letters by dragging or tapping to craft words; double-tap the final letter to confirm. If you find the correct word, the letters will be highlighted blue and will no longer be selectable. If you find a word that isn’t a theme word, it still helps! For every three non-theme words you find that are at least four letters long, you’ll get a hint — the letters of one of the theme words will be revealed and you’ll just have to unscramble it. 11. This feature is reportedly killing PC performance in Spider-Man 2 This feature is reportedly killing PC performance in Spider-Man 2 Spider-Man 2 is officially out on PC, and according to some early testing, the game has a bit of a problem with Microsoft’s DirectStorage. This feature enables GPU decompression in Spider-Man 2, and some users claim deleting the files associated with DirectStorage will actually improve your performance. Sebastian Castellanos shared some benchmarks with DirectStorage on and off in the game on X, which you can see below. There’s only a minor change in performance with DirectStorage disabled, but Castellanos is already running at a very high frame rate. It doesn’t look like much to write home about. Spent some time benchmarking/tweaking Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC. On my system (14700K+32 GB DDR5+RTX 4090), I could gain a decent amount of performance by overclocking the GPU, turning on Manual Re-BAR and deleting the DirectStorage DLL files. Game is a ****** fest though. pic.twitter.com/O4Uia2Dozj — Sebastian Castellanos (@Sebasti66855537) February 2, 2025 Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming However, YouTube channel Compusemble followed up with its own testing, finding a 10% increase in performance with DirectStorage disabled when using the RTX 4090 at 4K. The performance gains were smaller at lower resolutions, with a 6% improvement at 1440p and only a 3% improvement at 1080p. Spider Man 2 – DirectStorage with GPU Decompression On vs Off Comparison It makes sense that DirectStorage would contribute to some performance loss. A loss of 10% at 4K is extreme, but the feature enables GPU decompression in Spider-Man 2. This allows your GPU to decompress the game’s assets instead of your CPU, which can improve performance when your CPU isn’t up to snuff. If you’re already pushing your GPU hard, however, like when running a demanding AAA game at 4K, some of your GPU’s resources are allocated to DirectStorage instead of rendering the game, lowering performance. Both Compusemble and Castellanos were testing with high-end CPUs — an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D and Intel Core i7-14700K, respectively — and I suspect the performance dynamic would change significantly if testing with a weaker CPU. You can see a bit of that with Compusemble’s testing, where the performance gain decreases down at 1080p when there’s more strain put on the CPU. You can’t disable DirectStorage within Spider-Man 2. If you want to turn the feature off, you’ll need to go into the game’s installation folder and delete two files — dstorage.dll and dstoragecore.dll. The game should work just fine without these files, but if it doesn’t, you’ll either need to verify the game’s files through Steam or do a fresh install. You can also back up the .dll files elsewhere and add them back in the folder should you run into any issues. Spider-Man 2 has only been out on PC for a few days, but it’s already seen two hotfixes, one of which was released today. Neither of the fixes mention DirectStorage specifically, but the latest points toward “stability improvements” across the game. 12. 2025 Mitsubishi Triton review | The West *********** 2025 Mitsubishi Triton review | The West *********** The Mitsubishi Triton, especially in its most recent iteration, is an interesting proposition. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Despite now having been on ***** in Australia for a year, the latest generation Triton is still only available as a dual-cab pickup – single-cab, Club Cab and cab/chassis body styles will follow later in 2025. Nevertheless, you have six automatic-only twin-cab variants to choose from, and price ranges from $43,690 to $63,840 before on-roads. At the cheapest end is the sole 4×2 variant, and the rest of the lineup is fitted with four-wheel drive. When the new Triton range launched in early 2024, only five variants were available. That’s because the GLX-R variant, available in the previous generation as either a 4×2 or 4×4, wasn’t initially carried over. In July 2024, the Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R rejoined the range as an upper-midrange variant, and that’s what you see on test here. It’s positioned below the GLS and the flagship GSR, of which a new special edition was announced this week, for $700 less than the GSR itself. First revealed in mid-2023, the sixth-generation model brings Mitsubishi’s global mid-sized ute, which dates back to 1978 and is known as the L200 in some markets, into the modern age. WATCH: Paul’s video review of the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton GSR But Australia’s booming 4×4 ute market has become a lot more advanced and even more stacked since its predecessor was launched in 2015 (the same year the current Toyota HiLux and Nissan Navara were released). The Ford Ranger continues to lead the category with 57,960 sales in 2024, when it was followed by the HiLux (45,839) and the Isuzu D-Max (24,031). Though it was in the midst of a model changeover that brought only six new dual-cab variants, the Triton still ranked fourth in the category with 14,737 sales, but only slightly ahead of the Mazda BT-50 on 12,161 – which was gearing up for an update – and the aging Navara (9032). The GLX-R promises to be a more compelling value proposition for Triton buyers, but is it really the happy medium between practicality and luxury? How much does the Mitsubishi Triton cost? The GLX-R is the latest re-addition to the Triton lineup, and it leans towards the more expensive end of the six-variant dual-cab ute range. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Closest-matched to the GLX-R on price in the 4×4 Ford Ranger lineup is the XLS ***-turbo double-cab 4×4 pickup, which costs $57,630 before on-roads. The Ranger 4×2 XLT ***-turbo double-cab pickup is also close in price at $56,440 before on-roads, but that’s not a direct competitor given its rear-wheel drive setup. Toyota’s most direct rival is the HiLux SR dual-cab 4×4 pickup for $55,190 before on-roads, while that same model can also be purchased with mild-hybrid V-Active tech for a $56,210 plus on-roads. Isuzu’s rival to the GLX-R is the D-Max LS-M 4×4 crew-cab for $55,800 before on-roads, while the related and recently updated 4×4 Mazda BT-50 XT dual-cab pickup is priced at $54,620 before on-roads. Also close on price are the base Volkswagen Amarok Core TDI405 for $55,490 before on-road, GWM Cannon Alpha Ultra diesel for $57,990 drive-away, and Nissan Navara ST-X 4×4 dual-cab pickup at $58,945 before on-roads. To see how the Mitsubishi Triton stacks up against its rivals, use our comparison tool What is the Mitsubishi Triton like on the inside? It may not be as modern as something like a Ranger, but there’s a lot to like about the GLX-R’s interior. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert From the top: many may find its infotainment display to be relatively small. In comparison with the 10.1-inch vertical unit in the Ranger XLS (not least the Wildtrak’s 12.0-inch alternative), the GLX-R’s more traditional horizontal 9.0-inch is lacking on paper. In reality though, it’s perfectly functional and is integrated into the dashboard in a way that doesn’t seem like an afterthought. It also fits with the appearance of the rest of the cabin and its higher-end utilitarian setup. You also get wireless Apple CarPlay as standard across the range, though Android users will still need to plug in a cable to mirror their equivalent smartphone software. The wireless system was mostly fine during our week with the Triton, though there were some sporadic glitches when the connection dropped out. The screen’s native graphics are somewhat dated, but everything remains clear and easy to use. If you’re someone who prefers to leave CarPlay active at all times though, you may even forget about Mitsubishi’s software entirely. To make it easier to navigate, an array of shortcut buttons is located on the screen’s bottom bezel, along with a pair of dials. Our only complaint here is that these buttons are finished in gloss-****** plastic and quickly attracted fingerprints. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpertCamera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Below the infotainment display is where you’ll find the car’s climate control system, which is entirely analogue bar its simple digital display. It’s a reliable setup and refreshingly easy to use. A pair of switches are fitted on either side for fan speed and temperature respectively, while below that is an array of toggles that are clearly marked and satisfying to operate. We like the way Mitsubishi has laid out this system, as it’s far superior to the touchscreen-reliant setups you’ll find in some of the competition. The GLX-R does miss out on some of the niceties found on the GLS above it though, namely dual-zone climate control and seat heating. All that means is there’s a little less going on in the way of buttons and controls in the GLX-R’s centre console. The lack of heated seats is a product of its lower-spec Triton roots, and there’s also standard cloth upholstery fitted here in contrast to the leather seen higher up the range. The cloth trim and, by extension, the seats, remain genuinely comfortable to live with on the daily commute or longer drives. Adjustment is only manual (as with all Tritons except the GSR), but it’s easy to get situated thanks to the wide range of movement for both the driver’s seat and the reach/rake-adjustable steering wheel. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpertCamera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert You also benefit from powered lumbar adjustment across the range, but it’s worth remembering the GLX-R is really just a nicer base-spec Triton that’s cheaper than the two more premium Triton grades. That said, there isn’t a lot you miss out on beyond a handful of cosmetic enhancements, although there are some notable omissions. One is keyless push-button start, as the GLX-R still requires a physical flip-out key. That’s not a complaint though, as we can appreciate the more analogue approach, and many ute drivers may still prefer to put their key in the ignition, where it’s hard to lose! The GLX-R also misses out on soft-touch cabin surfaces in places like the door armrests, which means your elbow will become sore after a few minutes in a more relaxed driving position. There’s no wireless charging pad in here either, so you’ll have to make use of either the USB-A, USB-C, or 12V port up front. The other big omission is LED ***********, but we’ll go into more detail on that in the driving section. As far as storage goes, it’s a case of what you see is what you get. The second passenger-side glovebox in the GLS has lost its lid and is now a cubby, while there are a selection of adequately sized cup and bottle holders scattered around the cabin – not to mention the overhead sunglasses holder. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpertCamera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert In case you were wondering, the Triton does feature Ranger-style folding cupholders at the outboard ends of the dashboard, but only in the top-spec GSR. Fortunately, the driving-related gear the Triton packs inside is relatively consistent across the range. For one, that means the GLX-R’s steering wheel is nicely sized, sculpted, and finished with sporty perforations at 9 and 3 o’clock. It also has the benefit of being leather-wrapped compared to the three cheaper Tritons, but you still get the same basic infotainment and driver assist controls in the form of physical switchgear. Ahead of the wheel is a barebones instrument cluster, which, despite being fairly old-school, is nice to look at and easy to read. You get a fully analogue tachometer and speedometer, which also house two smaller needles for fuel level and temperature. In the middle is a basic 7.0-inch screen, which is where you’ll find a healthy amount of information regarding items like fuel economy and vehicle settings. It’s all navigable using the directional buttons and roller on the left of the wheel, and we’re a fan of how the ‘Home’ screen is laid out – vehicle speed, traffic sign info, and current audio are highlights. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Between the two seats are a chunky gear selector, gear range selector, and manual handbrake, as well as a cubby for phone storage. You may have also noticed the faux carbon-fibre trim here and on a couple of the other flat surfaces – this is something we could have done without. Stepping into the rear of the GLX-R – and the front, for that matter – is not as easy as in some of the other Triton variants let alone other utes, as there are no side steps to be found. There are interior grab handles on the A- and B-pillars to help vault yourself in, but it’s still relatively awkward thanks to the sizeable ride height the Triton 4×4 boasts. Once you’re in the back though, you’ll find there’s loads of space all round. Head and leg room are both excellent on account of the cabin’s boxy dimensions, while the bench seat is appropriately soft and upholstered in the same ****** fabric as up front. Fully grown adults will have no issue fitting back here, and there’s still enough room when all three seats are in use. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpertCamera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Looking to the roof reveals an interesting approach to second-row climate control. There are three basic controls in the middle (on/off, fan speed up and down), while on either side there are two wide vents with adjustable slats to help direct airflow. This gives rear-seat passengers control of their own ventilation, and while there’s no way for occupants in the back to adjust temperature, the setup is more than good enough. We appreciate the relatively innovative approach from Mitsubishi here (quite a few SUVs have ceiling vents, but not many utes), because overhead ventilation outlets – in this case fed by a large forward-facing intake on the ceiling in the middle of the cabin – can be very effective, as anyone who’s travelled on an airliner can attest. Other creature comforts back here include a thick fold-down centre armrest with two cupholders, while there are bottle holders in the doors. The back of the centre console is home to one additional USB-A and USB-C port each, as well as a 12V outlet. More of that fake carbon-fibre is fitted on the door cards back here and, while it doesn’t catch your eye, it doesn’t detract from the cabin’s otherwise clean presentation once you notice it. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Because this is a ute it’d be remiss of me to not mention the tub. Standard GLX-R models aren’t fitted with a tub liner from the factory, though our tester featured a couple of genuine accessories including a tub liner, soft tonneau cover, towing kit, and electric trailer brake kit. The tray’s cargo capacity is good, and the tailgate is easy to open thanks to the hydraulic arms fitted to the GLX-R. Our only complaint here is with the optional soft tonneau cover fitted to our tester, as it’s surprisingly hard to pull closed. There are leather tabs fitted to each corner give you something to grab, but it’s still not as easy as we’d like – especially compared to the optional electric cover, but with that you compromise on storage space. We do like the GLX-R’s ****** sports bar as it ties together the more aggressive blacked-out exterior appearance. Beyond that it’s all largely as you’d expect for a ute like the Triton, and that’s why everything works as well as it does. It’s not flashy by any means; instead the GLX-R presents as a nicer version of the cheaper Tritons while retaining the fundamental tech and gear to keep it as functional as possible. Think of it as a cohesive mix between a GLX+ and GLS. To see how the Mitsubishi Triton stacks up against its rivals, use our comparison tool What’s under the bonnet? One engine is available across the Triton range: an upgraded and now twin-turbo 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel. Where variants differ is drive type, as the GLX-R benefits from ‘Super Select II’ full-time four-wheel drive, as with the GLS and GSR flagships. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Cheaper Tritons make do with either rear-wheel drive or ‘Easy Select’ part-time four-wheel drive instead. Our recorded fuel economy over a week with the car was better than Mitsubishi’s claim. Driving primarily took place on highway routes of 80km/h or above, with some inner-city stints thrown in – on one such highway-focused 60km trip our fuel economy was as low as 5.5L/100km. We also had the opportunity to tow a small single-axle trailer loaded with three dirt bikes (approx. 600kg total), when fuel economy skyrocketed to as high as 10.8L/100km while driving almost entirely on regional highways at 100km/h. Before the towing trip we had averaged 6.4L/100km without any load in the back or behind, which is pretty efficient. To see how the Mitsubishi Triton stacks up against its rivals, use our comparison tool How does the Mitsubishi Triton drive? In a way that backs up its functional interior, but it’s far from perfect. Camera IconTriton GSR pictured Credit: CarExpert Highlights include the ***-turbo diesel engine. It’s surprisingly smooth; of course you’ll feel the classic diesel clatter, especially when it’s cold, but it’s nowhere near as unrefined as diesels can be. Though it lacks any mild-hybrid tech, it’s efficient too. We were able to better Mitsubishi’s fuel economy claim over an average week, which we’d attribute to the Triton’s ability to trundle along at relatively low revs on the highway. That also helps keep engine noise down, and both wind and the tyre noise are also acceptable. The six-speed automatic transmission, while not as versatile as the more sophisticated 10-speed auto available in the Ranger, also has no problem getting the job done. At certain lower speeds you may notice a tendency for it to get ‘stuck’ between gears – often revving too high by shifting too late – but it’s far from unliveable. If need be, you can also take control of the gears yourself by pushing the gear selector to the side. Shifts may not be instant in manual mode and there are no steering wheel paddles, but it’s nice to have the option if needed. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Near the shifter is also the driveline controller, where you can operate the GLX-R’s full-time 4WD drive system. It’s convenient and reassuring to be able to leave the ute in four-wheel drive when travelling on sealed surfaces, especially if you’ve been driving off-road and forget to switch back before hitting the tarmac. But you don’t lose a lot by leaving it in rear-wheel drive for standard commuting, mostly because its on-road characteristics are predictable and the power delivery isn’t too aggressive so it won’t easily cause the wheels to spin. As an added bonus, the Triton’s steering feel is excellent. It’s surprisingly low-effort yet appropriately direct, which makes it easy to navigate tight areas like carparks – it also lends itself to being thrown around quickly when reversing into a spot but never feels overly light. When you find yourself on a slippery road having to tow something larger though, the full-time four-wheel drive system is an added bit of security. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert On that note, towing with the Triton is incredibly easy. There’s plenty of tractable torque to haul lighter loads with ease, and it feels like towing heavier trailers will be no less effortless. The engine and steering combo make towing a trailer no problem at all. We tested its towing capability with three ~100kg dirt bikes on a 6×4 unbraked trailer with a combined weight of roughly 600kg, and experienced no issues whatsoever. What helps is the GLX-R’s suite of sensors and cameras. The reversing camera and associated surround-view camera are especially useful when reversing a trailer, and they each have benefits in daily driving too. Loading up the optional towbar and adding some cargo to the tub helps to iron out the Triton’s ride too. When unladen the GLX-R isn’t unbearable, but it still has the typical ute characteristics of being somewhat bouncy and clattery over bumps, and unlike a Ranger you can definitely feel the main chassis rails flex over ****** road obstacles, even at lower speeds. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert That said, we found it to be more compliant than the more work-ready GLX+ that’s positioned below it, which means it’s easier to live with day-to-day and feels more like the GLS and GSR. Combine the relatively plush ride with the well sorted steering feel and the GLX-R is a pleasant ute to drive. One downside is its tyres, however, because while our GLX-R came with Maxxis highway-terrain rubber, it did little to help its handling. Take a corner with fair pace and you’ll notice how the front tyres squeal as they struggle to fight understeer. The standard H/T tyres do give you some extra on-road stability and wet-road grip compared to the all-terrains offered elsewhere in the Triton range though. Body roll itself isn’t terrible, and the Triton feels like it’d otherwise be capable of keeping things composed if not for the compromised tyre situation. And it’s worth remembering the GLX-R is based on the more affordable GLX and GLX+ workhorses. They’re made to get a job done, and handling prowess isn’t one of those jobs. Given its classier presentation, however, we’d expect handling to be a little more refined, and maybe alternative rubber would be the solution – luckily that’s something that can easily be swapped out in future by owners. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Otherwise, the on-road experience of the Triton is simple and straightforward. There’s not a lot of tech going on, but most of the tech that is there is functional and easy to operate. But the key word here is ‘most’. It has adaptive cruise control, which is easily operated using the buttons on the right-hand side of the wheel. There’s unfortunately no lane-centring function on any Triton, which means it lags behind rivals like the Ranger and D-Max. Those accustomed to older cars likely won’t mind though and, to its credit, the cruise control works well to reliably adapt to the speed of traffic around. But then you get to the driver attention monitoring system, which despite an update in mid-2024 is still far too sensitive. We have the same complaints now as we did when we last reviewed the Triton GLX+; it’ll chime if you spend a fraction too long looking at the instrument cluster, the side mirrors, the climate control, or the touchscreen, and heaven forbid if you do a head-check or wear sunglasses. Fortunately, it can be easily turned off via the instrument cluster, but you’ll have to do it every time you jump in. It’s a small yet significant blemish on an otherwise quite solid product. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Our final note has to do with the GLX-R’s ***********, which are halogen-only instead of LED. It’s the most expensive Triton variant that doesn’t feature LED ***********, and while that might be easier on the eyes for oncoming traffic it’s hardly something worth bragging about. The light emitted is fairly yellow, and just doesn’t have the clarity we’d expect from a ute at this price point. What makes less sense to us is the contrast between this and some of the higher-end tech inclusions, namely the surround-view camera. We love the inclusion of a surround-view camera in any car and we understand it’s been carried over from the GLX+. Still, we’d prefer LEDs and we think the GLX-R would benefit from them – especially at this price. So the Triton is without question a good ute to drive, it’s just lacking those small dabs of polish that would fully round it out. For a full breakdown of its off-road capabilities, watch our video review of the Triton GSR To see how the Mitsubishi Triton stacks up against its rivals, use our comparison tool What do you get? To see how the Mitsubishi Triton stacks up against its rivals, use our comparison tool CarExpert’s Take on the Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R As the latest re-addition to the Triton range, we think the GLX-R makes a lot of sense. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert It perfectly bridges the gap between the work-oriented GLX variants and the more premium, road-going GLS, meaning it gains some more user-friendly bits and pieces without going overboard and inflating the price. Its price is likely one of its most compelling aspects. The GLX-R is still well within the mid-$50,000 range, and you don’t miss out on too much gear by not going for the higher-spec trims. Sure, it only has halogen ***********, but other shortcomings like the lack of full lane centring apply across the Mitsubishi ute range (along with the annoying driver monitoring system) so it’d be unfair to single out the GLX-R for them. You also get full-time four-wheel drive on top of those utilitarian GLX+ bones, which are also easier to live with thanks to Mitsubishi’s decision to swap out heavy-duty rear suspension in favour of a softer standard-duty setup. The interior is a comfortable place to be too. We could do without the fake carbon-fibre trim, but you at least get a leather-wrapped steering wheel instead of the GLX+’s plastic tiller. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert It’s a case of function over form, yet there has still been considerable effort put into the form factor to back up its strong functionality. The GLX-R looks the part. We like its blacked-out exterior accents and wheels, as well as that utilitarian-looking metal sports bar on the back. Load it up with Mitsubishi accessories and you have yourself a capable weekend hauler. Compared to the GLX+, the GLX-R is a much more logical value proposition and a hot contender for pick of the Triton family alongside the GLS – not to mention a strong consideration for me if I was in the market for a dual-cab 4×4 ute. Fit LED ***********, iron out those driver monitoring bugs, and it’d likely top my list. Camera Icon2025 Mitsubishi Triton Credit: CarExpert Interested in buying a Mitsubishi Triton? Japanese RTX 50 retailer apologizes for lottery-fueled mayhem — unruly crowd caused injuries, damaged nearby kindergarten Japanese RTX 50 retailer apologizes for lottery-fueled mayhem — unruly crowd caused injuries, damaged nearby kindergarten The owner of the Akihabara, Tokyo computer store which held an RTX 50 product release lottery has issued a sweeping apology to customers, neighbors, and everyone else who got caught up in the chaos last week. The chaos and carnage occurred during the firm’s ill-feted RTX 5090 and 5080 lottery sales release day event. 幼稚園侵入してるやつエグいってwwwwまじで捕まってくれ pic.twitter.com/Bww5uP4oXpJanuary 30, 2025 Click ‘see more’ to watch Tommy P’s video showing the crowd chaos at PC Studio’s RTX 5090 and 5080 lotto event day. PC Studio sought to distribute limited stocks of the freshly released Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 graphics cards fairly by giving customers a chance to buy raffle tickets. The raffle ticket ***** was to commence at 10.20 am on Friday, January 31, with only those already in line at that time having a chance to trade a winning ticket with the opportunity to buy a Blackwell GeForce graphics card. The raffle was to be drawn at 11.00 am, and the winners could then enter to claim their rights to an RTX 50 in-store. The best-laid plans of mice and men, and computer store retailers, often go awry, though, and this is very true of the PC Studio lotto. The PCs and parts retail chain had prepared a staff of about 25 people to marshal the crowd and process sales but unfortunately, the crowd was far ******* than expected resulting in (machine translated) descriptions of the event including words like – turmoil, severe damage, and uproar. Unitcom / PC Studio ended its blog post by repeating its regret – “We apologize deeply,” it wrote. We’ve looked around for more details of the chaotic graphics card lottery event, and understand that at least 400 people tried to get in the raffle ticket sales ******. Tokyo Game Life shared a few images of the scenes (while pondering how a Nintendo Switch 2 launch would fare). However, Tommy P’s video, embedded top, might provide a better view of the chaos. Of course, unruly personal behavior is entirely the responsibility of any member of the crowd who indulges in it. Unitcom / PC Studio has done the right thing in apologizing to customers and neighbors, though. Some will also lay blame at the door of Nvidia, for its overly hyped and woefully undersupplied Blackwell consumer graphics card retail debut. Woman, 34, Arrested After Police Say She Threw ‘First Date’ Brick Through Ex-Husband’s Window Woman, 34, Arrested After Police Say She Threw ‘First Date’ Brick Through Ex-Husband’s Window A woman has been arrested after police say they caught her on camera throwing a “first date” brick through the window of her ex-husband’s Florida home. On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) shared footage on Facebook showing Sabrina Coyne, 34, appearing to launch the construction material at a Bonita Springs property. Officers posted the doorbell camera video, dated four days prior, while Rik Rok and Shaggy’s 2000 hit “It Wasn’t Me” played in the background. “A 34-year-old woman is behind bars for throwing a ‘first date’ brick through a Bonita Springs residence window,” police captioned the clip. “Deputies located Sabrina Coyne outside of the residence after the homeowner says they woke up to a loud ****** and ******** on the front door,” the sheriff’s office added. “Coyne was arrested for criminal mischief & throwing a deadly missile into an occupied dwelling,” police said. Per online LCSO arrest records, the suspect was released on Sunday, Jan. 26 after posting bond — $5,000 for the weapon offense charge and $2,500 for the criminal mischief charge. Lee County Sheriff’s Office Sabrina Coyne In the video footage shared by police, an officer can be heard confronting the woman and asking, “What’s going on? You’re the one ******** on here?” “Yeah I’m trying to get in touch with my ex-husband…” she responded, insisting, “I banged on the door because he wouldn’t let me in!” “Do you live here?” the officer questioned, as the suspect said, “Yes!” while the word “Wrong!” — apparently added by police — flashed up on the screen. “Did you launch anything in there?” the officer asked, as the suspect insisted, “No” before the camera cut to footage showing her throwing what appeared to be a brick. “I didn’t break the window, I did not break the window!” she told police, reiterating, “Officer, officer, I did not break the window.” Lee County Sheriff’s Office Sabrina Coyne is caught on camera appearing to throw a ‘first date’ brick through her ex-husband’s window Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? 17. Disjointed industrial strategy a barrier to *** scaleup success Disjointed industrial strategy a barrier to *** scaleup success The second report from the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee has warned that the *** risks becoming an “incubator economy” unless there is greater support for tech startups. The AI and creative technology scaleup report presents witness statements and oral evidence from industry experts warning that the *** will lose out to other countries, and in particular, the US, unless it provides an environment to support scaleup businesses. One of the witnesses, Barney Hussey-Yeo, founder and CEO of Cleo AI, noted that the challenge the *** faces is that it cannot scale startup companies. He said it was also challenging listing these companies and capturing their tech value. Hussey-Yo described the *** as “a terrible place to scale and list a business”. Another witness, Nick Poole, CEO of video games industry body Ukie, described the *** as “one of the worst places in the G7” for scaling games businesses. While the CBI warned that unless the *** can nurture scaleups and create the environment for them to expand, it cannot hope to approach the level of growth and prosperity it needs. Written evidence from the British venture Capital and Private Equity Association (BvCA) highlighted the fact that *** science, technology and financial innovation sectors will lose out on opportunities when companies move overseas, taking intellectual property, quality jobs and innovation with them. Oxford Science Enterprises also submitted written evidence to the committee, arguing that, without urgent action, “the future cascade of value from the unicorns we are building – and the creation of the next generation of entrepreneurs from those companies – will continue to benefit other countries, primarily the US”. The report describes “piecemeal” initiatives that fail to offer scaleups a coherent pathway of financial support as they grow. “A complicated ‘spaghetti’ of well-intentioned government schemes, including financial reforms, tax credits, investment incentives and innovation focused initiatives are introducing further barriers and bureaucracy,” the report’s authors wrote. The House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee concluded that the government should not be complacent about the health of the ***’s scaleup scene. While the committee was positive about the government’s recent AI opportunities action plan, it stressed that achieving its ambition of making the *** “the best place to … scale an AI business” will require concerted effort and a significant mindset shift across the public sector. Tina Stowell, chair of the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee, said: “The government’s new AI opportunities action plan is a good start, but a plan in itself is not enough. The key is its delivery. The government will need to drive through change to address fundamental barriers such as limited infrastructure and comparatively low levels of adoption if it is to have an impact. It must also ensure creative tech is given the attention it deserves as an area with huge potential for economic growth. “Action must be taken to unravel the complex spaghetti of support schemes available for scaleups,” she said. “Various tax credits, British Business Bank funds and investment incentives combine to be so hard to navigate that companies have to employ consultants to advise them. We urgently need to simplify the help available and ensure it is set up to support our most innovative scaleups to grow, while also offering value for money to the taxpayer.” The committee has called on the government to ensure its industrial strategy is joined up and it streamlines public support for innovation. Other recommendations include committing to AI delivery and accelerating financial reform to unlock domestic growth capital. 19. Nvidia’s RTX 5090 may not be back for up to 4 months Nvidia’s RTX 5090 may not be back for up to 4 months Two of Nvidia’s best graphics cards finally hit the market last week, but it was really more of a brief appearance. The RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 are sold out pretty much everywhere, and if you’re waiting for a chance to buy one, don’t hold your breath. According to Overclockers, a *** retailer, the new Nvidia flagship may not be back in stock for up to 16 weeks. Overclockers, one of the biggest PC hardware stores in the ***, posted a stock update for the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080. According to the retailer, both cards are sold out, and the store is also not accepting preorders anymore. The demand was so high that some people are in a preorder ******; those customers can either wait it out or cancel and get a refund. “We have no plans to take pre-orders for any 50 Series cards until we have greater clarity on availability and have fulfilled the pre-orders we have taken,” says Overclockers ***. Jacob ****** / Digital Trends The worst part of it all is the estimated time for the RTX 50-series to be restocked. Overclockers estimates that the RTX 5090 should come back within three to 16 weeks, and the RTX 5080 — two to six weeks. On the lower end of that scale, it’s not so bad for either card. But, in the worst-case scenario, people who want to buy Nvidia’s new halo card may have to wait until the end of May. Considering the card launched in January, that’s a pretty long delay. It’s hard to say how long it’ll take for U.S. retailers to get more RTX 5090s. The cards are all but gone from Amazon, Newegg, and other retailers. Newegg says that it’ll “replenish stocks as soon as possible,” which could mean just about anything. The only place to get an RTX 5090 right now appears to be eBay, but that place is flooded with scams where people are selling .jpg files of the RTX 5090 for $2,000. If you want the actual GPU, you might have to pay up to $7,000. Meanwhile, the RTX 50-series launch in Japan resulted in chaos, including a broken kindergarten sign. Newegg Rumors about the limited availability of Nvidia’s RTX 50-series spread far and wide prior to the launch, but still, the harsh reality of high demand and low stock is only just starting to hit. The GPUs are sold out at all the major retailers, leaving many to wonder where to buy an RTX 5090 or an RTX 5080 today. The answer to that question is pretty much nowhere, unless you’re willing to spend $2,600 on the one RTX 5080 that’s currently available on Amazon, but you really shouldn’t. At this point, all we can do is wait. Source link #Nvidias #RTX #months Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  20. Marvel Star Is Trying To Get The Sleeping Dogs Movie Made–And A Game Sequel Marvel Star Is Trying To Get The Sleeping Dogs Movie Made–And A Game Sequel Marvel actor Simu Liu has revealed that he is attempting to revive the Sleeping Dogs series with a movie and a sequel to the 2012 game. Liu, who starred in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, said on social media that it’s been a “tiring” process to pitch Sleeping Dogs to executives, going on to note how only a small percentage of film projects that are pitched ever get made. “Everyone’s overwhelming love of Sleeping Dogs here has give us life,” he said, referring to the social media campaign to get a Sleeping Dogs movie off the ground. Liu said his plan is to make a Sleeping Dogs movie first, “then a sequel game for everyone,” or at least, “that’s always been the dream.” A source told IGN that a Sleeping Dogs movie is actually in development, with Liu on board to play the lead role of Wei Shen. A movie being in “development” doesn’t mean it’ll ever get made, though, only that pre-production work is being done in some capacity. Plenty of video game movies get announced and never come out for any number of reasons. Sleeping Dogs itself has been in development as a movie in some form for nearly a decade, after all, as Donnie Yen was at one point trying to make a Sleeping Dogs movie before apparently giving up. So few film projects make it from pitch phase to greenlight. Pitching execs who don’t understand the game has been tiring. Everyone’s overwhelming love of Sleeping Dogs here has really given us life! First a movie, then a sequel game for everyone… that’s always been the dream. pic.twitter.com/g84r9Lf0SI — Simu Liu (@SimuLiu) January 31, 2025 The original Sleeping Dogs game had players take control of undercover cop Wei Shen, who was tasked with infiltrating the Triad gangs operating in Hong Kong and gathering evidence on their various ******** activities. Despite being well-received by critics and fans, Sleeping Dogs never managed to become a franchise. A spin-off, Triad Wars, was canceled during its beta, and developer United Front Games shut down in 2016. A Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition was released in 2014. 21. Google to Ask US Appeals Court to Overturn App Store Verdict Google to Ask US Appeals Court to Overturn App Store Verdict Lawyers for Alphabet’s Google and Fortnite maker Epic Games are set to square off before a US appeals court in California on Monday, as Google tries to undo a jury verdict and a judge’s order forcing it to revamp its app store. Google has argued in court filings to the San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals that a trial judge made legal errors in the antitrust case that unfairly benefited Epic Games. Epic accused Google in a 2020 lawsuit of monopolising how consumers access apps on Android devices and how they pay for transactions within apps. The Cary, North Carolina-based company convinced a San Francisco jury in 2023 that Google illegally stifled competition. US District Judge James Donato ordered Google in October to restore competition by allowing users to download rival app stores within its Play store and by making Play’s app catalog available to those competitors, among other reforms. The order is on hold as the 9th Circuit weighs Google’s appeal. The tech giant has argued that its Play store competes fiercely with Apple’s App Store, and that Donato unfairly allowed Epic to tell jurors that Google and Apple are not competitors for app distribution and in-app payments. Google also said in its appeal that Donato was wrong to issue an order affecting users and developers nationwide, not just Epic. It said the judge was acting as “a central planner responsible for product design.” Epic has asked the 9th Circuit to reject those arguments and accused Google of a “years-long strategy to suppress competition among app stores and payment solutions.” In a statement, Epic said it will “fight to ensure that the jury’s verdict and the court’s injunction are upheld and Google is held to account for its anticompetitive behavior.” Microsoft filed a brief backing Epic, as did the US Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission. The 9th Circuit could issue a ruling later in the year. Its decision can be appealed to the US Supreme Court. © Thomson Reuters 2025 (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) 22. Here’s the earned income tax credit eligibility for 2024 returns Here’s the earned income tax credit eligibility for 2024 returns Milan2099 | E+ | Getty Images This tax season, the IRS expects more than 140 million individual returns — and many filers could miss a credit worth thousands of dollars. The earned income tax credit, or EITC, is a tax break for low- to moderate-income workers. In 2023, eligible taxpayers received an average credit of $2,743, according to the IRS. “Every year, millions of households receive the EITC,” former IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel told reporters in early January. But “nearly one in five eligible taxpayers don’t claim this valuable credit because they don’t know about it or don’t realize they qualify.” More from Personal Finance: Your tax return could be ‘flagged for audit’ without these forms Here’s what federal employees need to know when evaluating offer to resign The Fed holds rates steady. What that means for you For 2024, the EITC is worth up to $7,830 for families with three or more children, up from $7,430 in 2023, according to the IRS. Eligible workers, between the ages of 25 and 64, without kids can claim up to $632 for 2024. By law, the IRS can’t issue EITC refunds before mid-February, according to the agency. However, most early tax filers will see a status update in the “Where’s My Refund?” portal by Feb. 22. Refunds should arrive by March 3 if you chose direct deposit and there are no issues with your tax return. How the earned income tax credit works The EITC “can be confusing,” said Syracuse University law professor Robert Nassau, director of the school’s low-income tax clinic. For tax year 2024, you may be eligible with “earned income” or wages from working of $59,899 or less for single filers and $66,819 for married couples filing jointly, according to the IRS. These income limits decrease based on the number of qualifying children. These limits use adjusted gross income, which is your total income after subtracting pretax 401(k) plan contributions and “adjustments,” such as certain pretax individual retirement account contributions, student loan interest and educator expenses. Other EITC requirements include: Your investment income can’t be above $11,600 You must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien all year You need a valid Social Security number for you, your spouse (for joint returns) and qualifying children You must file a tax return Some eligible taxpayers missing the EITC could be lower earners without a filing requirement, Nassau said. But the EITC is “refundable,” meaning you can still claim a refund even without tax liability. You can use the IRS’ EITC assistant to see if you qualify. If eligible, you can file for free using IRS Direct File, IRS Free File, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and others. 23. In a switch, Trump approves Fed’s decision to hold interest rates steady In a switch, Trump approves Fed’s decision to hold interest rates steady U.S. President Donald Trump looks on as he signs an executive order in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, U.S., Jan. 31, 2025. Carlos Barria | Reuters President Donald Trump approved the Federal Reserve for its decision last week to leave interest rates unchanged, an early pivot from his previous demand that the central bank ease “immediately.” In an exchange with reporters Sunday, Trump said holding its key borrowing level in a range between 4.25%-4.5% was the correct move for the Fed. “I’m not surprised,” he said regarding the decision, according to multiple reports. “Holding the rates at this point was the right thing to do.” The statement stood in stark contrast to one Trump delivered when speaking remotely to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. In a Jan. 23 appearance, Trump said he would “demand that interest rates drop immediately.” The president has no direct authority over the Fed, though he does nominate the chairman as well as other board members. Current Chair Jerome Powell is a Trump nominee, and a frequent target of the president’s criticism. Markets don’t expect the Fed to lower rates until at least June. In his post-meeting news conference last Wednesday, Powell repeatedly asserted that the Fed doesn’t need to be in a “hurry” to lower further after shaving a full percentage point off the fed funds rate from September to December in 2024. The Fed’s decision-making got potentially more complicated after Trump on Saturday said he would impose aggressive tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China, the three largest U.S. trading partners. Economists worry that the tariffs will drive up prices at a time when inflation has shown signs of easing. 25. Amy Allen becomes first woman to win best songwriter Grammy Amy Allen becomes first woman to win best songwriter Grammy Getty Images You may not have heard of the first woman to be named best songwriter at the Grammys before – but you may well have sung along to one of her hits. Amy Allen is behind a string of pop chart-toppers including Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso and Please Please Please, and was also nominated for co-writing tracks with Olivia Rodrigo, Justin Timberlake and Tate McRae. Allen was one of four women nominated for songwriter of the year, non-classical, in the third year since it was launched as a standalone category. In her acceptance speech, she highlighted the prior lack of recognition for songwriters, adding: “Without us, there would be no songs for anyone to win awards for.” She was previously nominated for the same award in 2023, its inaugural year. While she did not win then, she took home her first Grammy for her work on Harry Styles’ Harry’s House, which won album of the year. “The child in me that was starting writing songs when I was little in Maine is screaming and crying and laughing at the absurdity of this moment,” she said as she picked up the golden gramophone on Sunday night. “This is the third year that songwriter of the year has even been a category, so this award goes out to all the legends who soundtracked the lives and generations with all of our stories. “You should have been able to receive your flowers back then.” Allen, a singer herself who released her debut album last September, entered the music world at the age of eight – playing bass in her sister’s band. She stayed in the band until high school and then went to nursing school, before deciding to change course and join Berklee School of Music. Her first project was as Amy and the Engine, and she was the support act for singers like Kacey Musgraves and Vance Joy. Allen’s first hit for another artist came when she penned Selena Gomez’s Back to You – something she said “propelled” her career in pop song-writing. She then paired up with Gomez to write My Mind & Me, which was nominated for a best original song Oscar in 2023. Getty Images Allen is also a singer in her own right She went on to work with Halsey and with Styles, including writing his hit Adore You, as well as with Lizzo. Her first Grammy nomination was in 2022 for Justin Bieber album Justice. Allen has since picked up a total of eight nominations, including four this year. She helped Carpenter write every track on chart-topping album Short n’Sweet, with the singer telling Variety she was a “once-in-a-lifetime writer and friend”, adding: “It all comes to her very naturally and effortlessly.” This year, Allen’s co-nominees were the singer Raye, alongside writers Jessi Alexander, Jessie Jo Dillon and Edgar Barrera. She said the award also belonged to them, saying they were “fighting the good fight”. “We are the engine that fuels the music industry,” she said. “And have been so long overlooked and under-appreciated. “It goes without saying, we have a long way to go.” Source link #Amy #Allen #woman #win #songwriter #Grammy Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
