Dethroned world champ’s ‘high-risk, high-reward’ return Dethroned world champ’s ‘high-risk, high-reward’ return Jason Moloney has had to wait for it, but the *********** is relishing a high-profile return to the ring in Tokyo that could fry or fast-track his shot at another world title. The former WBO bantamweight champion hasn’t fought since losing that belt in a heartbreaking Tokyo Dome points defeat in front of 55,000 fans to Yoshiki Takei last May. Moloney fell to 27-3 in dramatic scenes, starting slowly before having Takei laid-out on the ropes in the final round but unable to land the knockout blow. The 34-year-old has been champing for a chance to redeem himself ever since and will finally get it on February 24 against another southpaw and genuine Japanese mainstream star Tenshin Nasukawa at Ariake Arena. Nasukawa was the world’s No.1 pound-for-pound kickboxer before transitioning to boxing, where he is 5-0, ranked in the top three in the WBO, WBC and WBA, and boasts more than one million Instagram followers. Moloney dealt with his title loss by spending five weeks in camp with Seiya Tsutsumi, helping him beat Takuma Inoue to win the WBA bantamweight strap in October. It meant he was in Japan to watch Nasukawa’s last fight live. “When he walked out the crowd was going nuts; he’s hugely popular, I know there’s going to be plenty of eyes on this fight,” Moloney told AAP. “It’s awesome. I can have a good win, take out a good name and get back in the world title mix and open some doors.” A loss could be equally as impactful, with 11-year pro Moloney remembering the two years of grafting to earn title shots after losing his previous world title fights. “This is make or break, really,” he said. “You can’t afford to have two losses in a row. “One is such a setback, so the thought of two … it just can’t happen. “I was a world champion one fight ago, I know I have what it takes. “But the scary thing in boxing is that it sometimes takes so bloody long to get your shot again. “It’s high-risk, high-reward, but I’ve got to back myself.” Moloney has stewed on the errors he made against Takei, another former kickboxer, and admitted he wasn’t properly prepared for the southpaw. “I was still a bit out of my comfort zone, started passively and just gave him that momentum,” the *********** said. “I learnt a lesson, but this time around it feels so much easier (fighting a southpaw). In sparring it’s night and day, it feels.” Tsutsumi will defend his WBA belt against Daigo Higa on the stacked card, headlined by bantamweight pound-for-pound star and WBC champion Junto Nakatani against unbeaten ******** David Cuellar. Colossal great white shark tracked off Florida coast. What to know Colossal great white shark tracked off Florida coast. What to know A colossal, 1,600-pound great white shark, the largest male tagged by OCEARCH, has surfaced off Florida’s East Coast. The 13-foot, 9-inch shark, nicknamed Contender by the OCEARCH scientists who recently tagged it, pinged southeast of Jacksonville Beach twice on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 11:35 a.m. and 12:37 p.m. When the satellite tag affixed to the animal’s dorsal fin moves above the water’s surface, a ping with location information is sent to trackers. Contender was tagged off the Florida-Georgia coast on Jan. 17. “Contender is the largest male white shark the OCEARCH team has sampled, tagged, released and studied to date in the NW Atlantic white shark population! So he’s pretty special,” OCEARCH Chief Marketing Officer Nicole Ralson said in an email. After being tagged, the shark traveled north and pinged several times off Savannah, Georgia on Jan. 21 before heading south again, its tracker shows. Contender’s first Florida pings came on Jan. 26, when the shark pinged three times off Fernandina Beach coast. Since then, the shark has pinged twelve times zig-zagging between Amelia Island and Jacksonville. North Atlantic great white sharks leave their summer feeding grounds off Atlantic Canada and New England and travel along the East Coast, as far south as Florida and the Gulf, in search of warmer waters and more food sources. What to know about OCEARCH great white shark Contender Contender, an adult male white shark, was tagged by OCEARCH off the Georgia-Florida coast on Jan. 17. “Meet Contender, the ultimate ocean warrior! This powerful white shark was tagged on January 17, 2025, off the FL/GA coast, about 45 miles offshore,” the shark’s tracker page reads. “Contender is a mature male now contributing to OCEARCH’s mission of shark research and ocean conservation.” Contender measured 13 feet, 9 inches and weighed in at 1,653 pounds at the time, making him the largest male white shark tagged by OCEARCH. According to its tracker, the shark has traveled 160 miles since being tagged. Contender was reportedly named for Contender Boats, a longtime OCEARCH partner. Are there great white sharks in Florida? Yes. Great white sharks migrate south when the water gets cold and food sources become scarce off the coasts of Atlantic Canada and the area around Cape Cod, New England, according to OCEARCH chief scientist Dr. Bob Hueter. According to OCEARCH, during the warmer months, these apex predators take advantage of the abundant seal populations and rich prey resources found in these areas. As temperatures drop and food sources dwindle, white sharks are triggered by a combination of decreasing water temperatures and changes in daylight hours, prompting their southward migration. Think of them as the snowbirds of sharks. Most of them tend to stay away from the beaches in continental shelf waters, Hueter said. Where are great white sharks found in Florida? Great white sharks are found in every ocean, though they stay away from the colder waters of Antarctica and the Arctica. They can be found around Florida’s coast, from the state’s east coast to the Gulf. How many great white sharks are there? There’s no absolute data on the global population of white sharks and estimates vary widely – from 3,000 to over 10,000. According to NOAA Fisheries: The stock status for white shark populations in U.S. waters is unknown and no stock assessments have been completed. No stock assessments are currently planned in the Atlantic. Research by NOAA Fisheries scientists indicates that abundance trends have been increasing in the northwest Atlantic since regulations protecting them were first implemented in the 1990s. According to a NOAA Fisheries status review and recent research, the northeastern Pacific white shark population appears to be increasing and is not at risk of becoming endangered in U.S. waters. What do great white sharks eat? According to NOAA Fisheries, white sharks have a diverse and opportunistic diet of fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals. Juvenile white sharks mainly eat bottom fish, smaller sharks and rays, and schooling fish and squids. Larger white sharks often gather around seal and sea lion colonies to feed and also occasionally scavenge dead whales. Facts about great white sharks Weight: Up to 4,500 pounds Length: About 4 feet (at birth) and up to 21 feet (adult) Lifespan: 70 years or more Threats: Bycatch, Habitat Impacts, Overfishing. According to NOAA Fisheries, the white shark is a prohibited species (no retention allowed) in all U.S. waters and fisheries. There are no commercial fisheries for white sharks, but they are occasionally caught as bycatch. Region: Alaska, New England/Mid-Atlantic, Pacific Islands, Southeast, West Coast Teeth: Great white sharks have 300 teeth but don’t chew their food. Instead, they rip it into pieces and ******** it whole. The sharks have an endless supply of teeth, with lost teeth regenerating infinitely. Sight: Great white sharks can see well in low light, enabling them to hunt at dawn, dusk, or in deep waters, OCEARCH reported. Additionally, white sharks can detect weak electrical signals emitted by living creatures, even under sand. They also identify vibration changes in the water, allowing them to find prey by sensing movement. Great white sharks in Florida on OCEARCH shark tracker North Atlantic great white sharks migrate as far south as Florida and the Gulf in winter, searching for warmer waters and more food sources. OCEARCH has tagged 125 white sharks, many of them along the Eastern Seaboard and Nova Scotia. Fire in the belly for ‘stitched up’ Western Force Fire in the belly for ‘stitched up’ Western Force Nic White reckons the Western Force have been stitched up by the Super Rugby fixturing, but he’s backing his side to buck the odds and gatecrash the finals. The Force are yet to reach the finals in a full Super Rugby competition, and that trend is being tipped to continue in 2025. The Perth-based franchise sit second last in most betting markets, behind only Moana Pasifika. Making matters more challenging for the Force is a hectic travel schedule which will see them criss-cross Australia for most of the season, as well as facing their usual tough trips to NZ and Fiji. There are two sensible sections in the Force’s draw. The first is when they play the Waratahs in Sydney one week and then the Crusaders in Christchurch the next, giving them the option to stay over in the east. Then later in the season, the Force will be able to set up camp in NZ to face the Chiefs and Blues in consecutive weeks. Aside from that, the Force will be back and forth all season – a situation that hasn’t escaped the attention of White or his teammates. “We’ve been kind of stitched up with the draw,” White told AAP. “You feel like given we’re the furthest away that travel should come into consideration there. “We’ve got to zig-zag across the country and across to New Zealand quite a bit this year. So we’re on the road a fair bit. “I feel like there could have been a more efficient way of doing that. “I thought it worked well last year, we had two or three home games in a row and then two or three away games. “But this year it’s kind of one at home, one away, one at home, one away, which kind of upsets the training week. “We fly economy. There’s a couple of exit rows that will go to the locks. Outside of that, we’re all jammed in together. “And as you know with time zones (it’s difficult).” Instead of dwelling on the tough travel schedule and being written off by most outsiders, the Force want to use it as extra motivation. “You kind of feel like you’re last thought of over here, and that’s good,” White said. “Give us that title of underdogs and write us off, and we’ll go about our work over here and hopefully surprise some people. “It’s fire in the belly right, being written off, being underdogs.” The Force recruited current and former Wallabies Dylan Pietsch, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Harry Johnson-Holmes and Darcy Swain during the off-season. One-cap England international Nic Dolly and one-cap All ******* back Matt Proctor were also among the new additions. The Force posted a 4-10 record last year to miss out on the finals, but White says there is a buzz about the group heading into the upcoming campaign. “We’d certainly like to play some finals footy,” White said ahead of the team’s season opener at home to Moana Pasifika on February 15. “We really let ourselves down last year.” Source link #Fire #belly #stitched #Western #Force Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

The health risks of having an apron belly – and how to get rid of it The health risks of having an apron belly – and how to get rid of it If you’ve lost a lot of weight or had pregnancies which have stretched out your stomach, you might have been left with what’s not-so-charmingly referred to as an apron belly, and be wondering how to treat it. Whether yours is large enough to be causing you pain and difficulty dressing and exercising, or more of a cosmetic concern, there are ways to manage and even resolve the condition. What is an apron belly? Colloquially called an apron belly, stomach overhang or mother’s apron, this is a medically recognised condition where excess **** and skin form a flap which hangs down from the lower abdomen. It is properly referred to as an abdominal pannus or panniculus. “Essentially it’s an overhanging bit of skin at the bottom of the abdomen that has lost its elasticity and cannot shrink back after weight loss,” explains Mr William Van Nierkerk, a consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street. “Usually there is still some stubborn **** associated with it, but not always.” It’s most commonly seen in women who have carried children or lost a lot of weight, but can also be an issue for men who have undergone significant weight loss. The condition can vary in its severity from a small sagging overhang of just a few inches of skin, to an unmistakable drooping apron of flesh which can cover the ****** area and reach as far as mid-thigh or even to the knees in serious cases. What causes an apron belly?Extreme weight loss It is not usually gaining weight that causes an apron belly, but losing it. Typically, an overweight stomach will protrude outwards, not downward (although in some cases of obesity you may see both occur together). But after a certain degree of weight loss, the overstretched skin begins to sag and cause an apron or draping effect. “We tend to see it most commonly in people who have lost a great deal of weight,” explains Van Nierkerk. “Your skin has been expanded by the extra ****, but as you lose it, your skin has to shrink back. Past a certain point of stretching, the skin can be damaged beyond repair. Like an elastic band that has been pulled too far, it can lose its elastic recoil and only shrink back to a limited degree. Thanks to gravity, that skin and whatever residual **** is left in the area is then prone to hang down.” Although gradual weight loss is safer in general, he says it’s a myth that losing weight very quickly puts you more at risk of an apron developing than losing weight slowly. Carrying a baby “You can develop this apron-like stomach to some degree just from going through pregnancy,” says Van Nierkerk. “Some women experience weight gain along with pregnancy, but just the baby bulge and no other real weight gain can stretch the abdominal skin beyond a certain level of tolerance. Just as if the skin had been stretched by ****, it is stretched by the baby bump, and at some point it loses the capacity to entirely shrink back and becomes slack.” Having a caesarean Caesarean section scars can exacerbate an apron belly or even create an overhang or shelf of skin in this area, depending on their location and how they have healed. “When you have a C-section, the surgeon cuts through seven layers and the scar tissue can tether the skin to the layer(s) beneath. The scar can act like a barrier, a wall between the skin above and below it.” This horizontal wall across the bottom of your abdomen can cause the skin (and any ****) above it to hang over the scar, creating a small apron that would not be there if the scar was not pulling at the skin. “Even if your body otherwise bounces back from pregnancy well, you can end up with a small lip or overhang of flesh, which can be a source of great frustration,” says Van Nierkerk. What are the health risks?Excess abdominal **** Studies have repeatedly shown that more **** around the abdomen increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, ******* and even neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, among other issues. Often, the apron belly is more loose skin than ****, but it may also include stubborn abdominal **** that has become difficult to shift. Risk of infection A large pannus is likely to cause hygiene issues as it is difficult to keep clean and can be very sweaty and uncomfortable. This can result in intertrigo, a type of inflammatory rash that develops between skin folds, or fungal infections. Postural problems “The apron can also cause discomfort and difficulty moving or exercising, and affect posture causing back pain,” says Van Niekerk. “People don’t realise how heavy these aprons can be, and they can pull you forward and put a lot of strain on the back.” How to get rid of an apron bellyDiet and exercise You can shrink a stomach overhang to some degree by losing weight through diet and exercise, although often an apron belly will remain. In some cases they can even look worse the more weight you lose, as it is primarily slack skin rather than **** which creates the apron effect. Nonetheless, losing weight healthily through a low-calorie diet of vegetables, wholegrains and protein can reduce both abdominal and overall ****. Improving your posture and fitness through a combination of cardio and resistance exercise will also get your body primed to have other treatments to successfully reduce the area. Non-invasive aesthetic treatments These are most effective for very small stomach ‘pooches’ or overhangs which are mostly made up of hard-to-shift **** rather than extreme excess skin. One popular method is CoolSculpting, where **** is frozen, killing the **** cells which are then excreted by the body over the weeks to follow. “This method can achieve as much as a 27 per cent reduction in **** in the treated area,” says Ria Murch, a senior medical aesthetician at The Cosmetic Skin Clinic. She advises that it can be used to help improve C-section overhangs and small aprons caused by stubborn **** pockets, but is unlikely to be suitable for treating a larger pannus or a lot of loose skin. Surgical removal Surgical treatments are the only completely effective way to get rid of a true apron belly. These can range from surgical removal of just the excess skin, to a full tummy tuck which removes excess skin, **** and repairs any muscular damage to the abdomen. Surgical treatments for apron bellyTummy tuck (abdominoplasty) “A full tummy tuck or abdominoplasty will completely recontour the abdomen and remove any sign of an apron,” says Van Nierkerk. The procedure involves making an incision horizontally along the bikini line, removing any excess skin from above it (as far up the abdomen as necessary) and repositioning the belly button in the new skin. It also repairs any damage to the muscles of the abdominal wall (as many people having this procedure will also have diastasis recti, a separation of the abdominal muscles caused by pregnancy). A similar option is a mini tummy tuck, which involves much the same process and similar scarring, but only removes skin from the area below the belly button. Brazilian tummy tuck (abdominoplasty with liposuction) A Brazilian abdominoplasty is similar to a full tummy tuck, however this procedure “includes liposuction and preserves the blood supply to the area during surgery better”, explains Van Nierkerk. This is his preferred method of abdominoplasty where possible as although it is a longer procedure, it is lower risk and patients do not need drains to remove fluid following surgery. Apronectomy (panniculectomy) More unusual but more likely to be offered on the NHS than an abdominoplasty is a panniculectomy (also known as an apronectomy). A more basic degree of operation which focusses just on removing the excess flesh of the apron, it is often offered to people who have lost extreme amounts of weight but still have some to lose and need the excess skin removed in the meantime in order to reduce discomfort and improve movement, says Van Nierkerk. Apron belly FAQsWill walking help get rid of an apron belly? To a degree, yes – in that any form of regular exercise will help you to shed **** all over and to improve muscle tone and posture, which can all lead to an improvement in the appearance of your apron and shrink it somewhat. However, as Van Nierkerk notes, the key feature of significant apron bellies is that they are caused by damage to the skin more so than stubborn ****, and this stretched skin cannot be shrunk by diet or exercise. What exercises are best for an apron belly? Although you cannot spot reduce **** or shrink sagging skin with exercise, abdominal and core exercises will improve posture and potentially make your apron belly sit better, or help your body prepare for alternative treatments to deal with the area. Try planks and mountain climbers alongside weight training at least twice a week. Can hormone imbalance cause apron belly? Apron belly is not caused by a hormone imbalance per se, but can be influenced by hormonal changes such as pregnancy and the menopause. Hormone changes at menopause can cause **** to be distributed around the stomach more than it was previously, while the loss of oestrogen affects skin laxity. Body found after boy swept away in fast-flowing river Body found after boy swept away in fast-flowing river The body of a teenage boy has been found after he was swept away while swimming with two friends in a rural river. The 16-year-old’s body was found in the Macquarie River at Dubbo, in western NSW, on Tuesday afternoon. Emergency services were called to Sandy Beach, a popular swimming spot on the river, about 5.50pm on Monday after the teenager disappeared in the water. He had been swimming with two 16-year-old friends when the group was washed downstream. “They were swimming in the river and they’ve been swept away by the current,” NSW Police Acting Inspector Scott Heckendorf told reporters at Sandy Beach on Tuesday. “One of the males had failed to resurface.” The water was moving quickly when the boy disappeared, Acting Insp Heckendorf said. “The river is unpredictable and the currents are changing all the time. “The river was flowing quite fast and it’s quite deep out there.” Drones and sniffer dogs were used to search for the boy on Monday night and throughout Tuesday. Community members joined the search, which involved police divers and crews from the NSW State Emergency Service and the Volunteer Rescue Association. Before the discovery of the boy’s body, Acting Insp Heckendorf said counselling was being provided to classmates at his high school and his rugby club, where he was well known. There have been several drownings in rivers and at waterfalls around Australia over summer. A 21-year-old man drowned while swimming with family and friends in the Murrumbidgee River at Pine Island Reserve in Canberra’s south on January 29. On the same day, an 18-year-old man died after falling 15 metres into a rock embankment after reportedly using a rope swing at the Coomera River on the Gold Coast. A third of all drownings occurred in inland waterways in 2024, including 80 deaths in rivers, according to Royal Life Saving Australia’s national report. “Isolated natural aquatic environments, such as rivers and creeks, increase the risk of drowning due to changeable conditions and often geographical remoteness,” the organisation’s research said. Emergency crews responded to Attitash Mountain Resort in Bartlett just after noon on Saturday after a chair detached from the Flying Bear lift, according to the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office. Witnesses reported that the man was conscious and walking after the fall. He was then assisted by ski patrol and transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Tramway inspectors said that a preliminary inspection showed a mechanical failure caused the chair to dislodge. In an update on Monday, the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office said, “Representatives of the lift manufacturer have also been present on the scene and are assisting with and fully cooperating in the ongoing investigation” Inspectors now plan to review records of past inspections of the lift, including the most recent State inspection conducted in November 2024. As Australia’s Election Nears, Peter Dutton Has a ‘Trump Lite’ Approach As Australia’s Election Nears, Peter Dutton Has a ‘Trump Lite’ Approach It’s been called the Trump playbook, the Trump card, the Trumpist approach, campaigning as “Donald Trump lite” and even “going full Trump.” Election season is heating up in Australia, where the opposition leader, Peter Dutton, has been sounding a lot like President Trump. He has lashed out at a “woke brigade” of banks, grocery stores and a chain of pubs for addressing environmental and Indigenous issues. He has lamented about young men being “disenfranchised and ostracized” by diversity initiatives. And he’s set up a shadow minister for government efficiency. Mr. Dutton, the head of Australia’s main center-right political party, hopes to oust Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in an election that must be held by May 17. Mr. Albanese has been under pressure to rein in post-pandemic inflation, and Mr. Dutton has accused him of being too distracted by “woke” issues, like Indigenous rights, to address high prices and unaffordable housing. But last week, a widely followed poll had Mr. Albanese’s approval rating at its lowest point since he came to power in 2022. Fifty-seven percent of respondents in the NewsPoll survey said they disapproved of his performance. A head-to-head comparison showed Mr. Dutton closing in on Mr. Albanese, a sign that his political messaging was getting at least some traction. “What I like about Dutton is he doesn’t sit on the fence,” said Louise Pridham, 57, a retired nurse who lives in the Sydney suburb of Cronulla. She and her husband, Nigel Pridham, a 57-year-old builder, said they were not Trump fans but felt validated by some of Mr. Dutton’s messaging, which Mr. Pridham acknowledged had a Trump-like quality. Ms. Pridham said more people she knew seemed to be appreciating Mr. Dutton’s bluntness. “He says as it is. There’s no wokeness in it.” The parallels between Mr. Trump and Mr. Dutton, a 57-year-old former policeman known for his tough stances on immigration and asylum seekers, are drawn by both supporters and critics. Mr. Dutton has not shied away from the allusion; on Friday, he railed about the government’s diversity and inclusion efforts, hours after Mr. Trump, without offering evidence, blamed D.E.I. policies for a deadly plane-helicopter collision outside Washington. “Positions advertised have included culture, diversity and inclusion advisers, change managers and internal communication specialists,” Mr. Dutton said, referring to job openings in the government. “Such positions, as I say, do nothing to improve the lives of everyday Australians.” Mr. Dutton’s office did not respond to requests for comment. Mr. Trump’s return to office has emboldened a range of right-wing politicians across Europe to harden their rhetoric, solidify their bases and expand their ambitions. But in Australia, the influences are more muddled. In 2019, a survey found that the conservative base in Australia was far more ideologically aligned with Hillary Clinton backers in the United States than with Trump supporters. Last year, barely a fifth of *********** voters said in a survey that they would have chosen Mr. Trump over then-Vice President Kamala Harris if the U.S. election were up to them. Mr. Dutton made clear his distaste for “wokeness” as early as 2021, when as defense minister he banned events where staff members wore rainbow-colored clothing to support L.G.B.T.Q. awareness. Two years later, conservatives were energized by a watershed moment in Australia’s culture wars. In 2023, a proposal to give Indigenous Australians a voice in Parliament in the form of an advisory body was rejected soundly by voters in a referendum. It had been a landmark effort for Mr. Albanese, and its defeat, his opponents argued, meant a majority of Australians felt that placing too much emphasis on the country’s colonial sins was divisive. One of Mr. Dutton’s rallying cries has been his defense of Australia Day, the annual Jan. 26 holiday marking the day British settlers first landed in the Sydney area. In recent years, people who see it as a celebration of brutal colonial oppression of the Aboriginal population have called for abolishing the holiday or moving it to a different date. But a survey conducted last month by The Sydney Morning Herald found that 61 percent of Australians supported keeping Australia Day as it is, up from 47 percent a year earlier. Mark Kenny, the director of the *********** Studies Institute at the *********** National University, said Mr. Dutton’s rhetoric appealed to a working-class base, which, like its American counterpart, sees itself as having been abandoned by economic shifts, including the decline of manufacturing. Those voters felt let down by their traditional political leadership on the left, he said. “What you’ve got there is a kind of long-simmering sense of dissatisfaction, of being ignored, of not heard, being left behind,” he said. “When Dutton says ‘woke,’ it’s lazy and imprecise, but that doesn’t matter. People can attach to it what they think.” It is unlikely that Mr. Dutton can win just by mobilizing single-issue voters. That’s because voting is compulsory in Australia, with the threat of a fine for noncompliance, and turnout typically exceeds 90 percent. As readily as he has adopted some of Mr. Trump’s language and priorities, Mr. Dutton has drawn the line at others, resisting pressure from a coalition partner to campaign on transgender issues. He has also indicated that he would not consider withdrawing Australia from the Paris Agreement, the international climate accord. To Graeme Turner, emeritus professor of cultural studies at the University of Queensland, Mr. Dutton’s use of Mr. Trump’s words and rhetoric seem a lot more opportunistic than substantive. “I doubt you could find a politician who could define the word ‘woke,’” Mr. Turner said. “It’s become a really handy slogan as a way of smearing any idea they don’t like, as a way of pre-empting it from serious analysis.” The sniping over Australia Day continued last week. Sussan Ley, the deputy leader of Mr. Dutton’s party, marked the holiday by likening the arrival of British colonizers to Elon Musk’s ambitions to settle Mars. “They did not come to destroy or to pillage,” she said, in comments that were promptly criticized and lampooned. The day before, at the spot where Captain James Cook first landed in Australia in 1770 — now a national park — a smattering of families sprawled out on grassy knolls and enjoyed a leisurely, sunny afternoon. “It wouldn’t matter to me if you change the date because it’s not that big a deal,” John Gallop said of the holiday that was causing so much fuss among politicians. He said it was his first visit to the site in more than 50 years of living in Sydney, and that he had only come at the urging of his wife, who is from the Philippines. “There’s so much more we need to change in Australia,” he said. Tributes paid to boy, 15, after Sheffield school stabbing
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Tributes paid to boy, 15, after Sheffield school stabbing Tributes paid to boy, 15, after Sheffield school stabbing Handout The teenager who died has been named locally as Harvey Willgoose A 15-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed at a school in Sheffield has been described as a “lovely lad” and the “life of a party”. Floral tributes and messages have been left outside All Saints Catholic High School, where the boy, named locally as Harvey Willgoose, was injured. A boy, 15, has been arrested on suspicion of ******* and remains in police custody, South Yorkshire Police said. The force said it was working “at pace” to build a full picture of what had happened. One message left outside All Saints described the teenager as someone who had been “the life of a party” and who had “brought joy and laughter to everyone who knew him”. His “bubbly personality was contagious”, it added. “I’ll never forget all the moments, all the laughs. You’ll be missed by so many,” it said. A teenager who said he had known the 15-year-old also left a bunch of flowers outside the school. The 17-year-old, who studies at a local college, heard the news through friends and said the boy who died had been a fan of Sheffield United. He said: “I’m a bit upset to be honest, it came as such a shock. “He seemed quite a happy guy and a nice guy to be around.” One All Saints pupil said the victim had been a “lovely lad”. “He would make your day better hearing him down that hallway. You didn’t have to personally know him to be upset,” the 17-year-old said. “Teachers loved him, students loved him, everyone loved him. “I’ve been at the school for seven years now and nothing like this has ever, ever happened.” PA Media On Monday a number of parents arrived at the school to collect their children early. One told the BBC they were keen to get their youngster home after hearing a variety of rumours about what had happened, adding the “kids were getting panicked”. According to the local newspaper The Star, the school’s head teacher sent a message to parents on Monday. He said it was with “shock and sorrow” that he had to tell people a pupil had been fatally stabbed. He also said the school would be closed on Tuesday. Assistant Chief Constable Lindsey Butterfield said her force was working to establish “how this tragedy unfolded” and used a news conference to urge people to “be mindful that there are loved ones at the centre of this”. All Saints head teacher Sean Pender had sent a message to parents last Wednesday about a lockdown at the site which he said was due to “threatening behaviour between a small number of students”. Asked during the news conference about the reports, ACC Butterfield said she could not share any information relating to it. But she urged people to avoid speculation and sharing content online “which could be distressing to them [the family] and detrimental” to the investigation. Watch: Police confirms death of 15-year-old after Sheffield school stabbing Asked about the incident while on a trip to Brussels, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said his first thoughts “as a father” were with the victim’s family. “The terrible stabbing in Sheffield is one where I think the whole country would want to reach out to the family, to the friends, to the school, the entire community in their grief and mourn with them,” he said. Louise Haigh, the MP for Sheffield Heeley, said the news was “horrific” and that “serious questions” would have to be answered about how it could have happened. Anti-knife crime campaigners in the area have said incidents like this should not happen. Amaan Ahmed, who manages the Castle Asian Community Trust near the school, said he feared the boy’s death would leave parents wondering if they should send their children back to school. “If it can happen in a public place like a school, people will be worried about going to the park I think too,” he added. Sheffield-based Anthony Olaseinde, who works for the charity Always an Alternative, said the incident was “heart-breaking”. “Something like this should not happen,” he said. He said the charity had held sessions at All Saints and worked with young people at the school. If you are affected by any of the issues raised, help and support is available via BBC Action Line. Here’s How Far Tesla Cybertruck Lease Prices Have Fallen Here’s How Far Tesla Cybertruck Lease Prices Have Fallen Here’s How Far Cybertruck Lease Prices Have Fallen Anadolu – Getty Images Tesla lowers monthly lease prices for its Cybertruck again, now leasing at $749 a month for 36 months after a $7,500 down payment. The AWD versions of the trucks have received quite a few incentives over the past few weeks, including free charging and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) subscriptions. The EV maker is seen as being close to maxing out incentives for current versions of the truck, which has been on ***** for just over a year, but the more affordable single-motor variants have yet to enter production. We are still far from seeing the least expensive version of the Cybertruck arrive on *****, but the latest indications are that most of the demand for pricier variants has been fulfilled some time ago. Now, the EV maker has slashed lease prices for the Cybertruck to help move remaining inventory, lowering the monthly lease price from $899 a month to $749 a month. The lease does still require a hefty $7,500 down payment, before various other fees due at signing. That is a steep cut for sure, but what could be even more whiplash-inducing is the fact that at the start of November Cybertruck leases began at $1,068 a month. That was the payment for the AWD version of the truck at the time, while the tri-motor Cyberbeast demanded to be fed at least $1,284 a month, with more generous mileage options stretching up to $1,338 a month for 15,000 miles a year, in place of the standard 10,000 miles. In other words, we haven’t seen the bottom of this lease pricing well, and waiting a few more months could yield even greater savings for prospective Cybertruck lessees. (In fact, just waiting in general could result in greater deals down the line, including purchase prices). To purchase one outright, buyers will still need at least $81,985 for an AWD version, so there is plenty of room for more drops down the line. But that’s not all. Tesla is also throwing in free wraps for Foundation Series Cybertruck buyers—a $6,000 value—to keep the trucks moving. The offer for the free XPEL-installed wraps ends March 31, and the voucher for the free installation must be redeemed by June 30 of this year. Story continues In effect, Tesla is pressing quite a few, if not all, of the demand-generation buttons it has in front of it. Just weeks ago Tesla sweetened the deal for Cybertruck buyers even more, throwing in free charging and Full Self-Driving (Supervised). But one button it hasn’t pressed so far is the one that will produce single-motor Cybertrucks—at one point they were promised to start at $39,900. We aren’t holding our breath to ever see them actually sell for that price, as that promise was made well before the arrival of our current inflationary dystopia, but it is worth noting that the least expensive Cybertrucks are still sitting at about double that price. So there is still plenty of room for prices, and equipment levels, to drop. In the auto industry it is very common to see a rush of buyers for the first year of a given model, especially a unique one, with an automaker then facing the task of converting entirely new buyers to a particular model. Lease prices falling for Tesla Model 3. Tesla But the variety of incentives and price drops applied to the Cybertruck in recent months to keep sales moving appears extraordinary, unfolding over a ******* of weeks. However, the more inventory-moving step of the past few days could be the simultaneous drops in monthly lease prices for two Model 3 variants. The RWD Long Range version of the Model 3 has dropped to $249 a month, while the AWD Long Range version has also dropped by $50, sliding from $399 to $349 a month. As these are still Tesla’s bread and butter—and have recently received a refresh—this drop in lease pricing could be far more consequential in the short term. Would a starting price of $39,900 for a single-motor Cybertruck motivate more buyers to pick one up, or are issues other than price playing a heavier role? Please comment below. iPhone 15 Becomes the Best-Selling Smartphone of 2024, Samsung Also on the List With 3 Models: Canalys iPhone 15 Becomes the Best-Selling Smartphone of 2024, Samsung Also on the List With 3 Models: Canalys Apple dominated the list of the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with the most smartphones shipped in 2024, according to claims by a market research firm. The Cupertino-based technology giant had as many as seven iPhone models in the top 10 best-selling smartphones of 2024 list, with its new flagship iPhone 16 Pro Max also becoming a runaway success, even though it only debuted in September 2024. Meanwhile, Samsung just about managed to earn its place in the top five rankings courtesy of the Galaxy A15. Notably, Apple had also secured the top spot in Q4 2024 with a 23 percent market share, driven by its latest iPhone 16 series. Best-Selling Smartphones of 2024 A report by market analysis firm Canalys reveals that the global smartphone market grew by 7 percent year-on-year (YoY) in 2024, reaching 1.22 billion units. This is said to be the first recovery after two consecutive years of decline in smartphone shipments. Apple retained its crown as the company with the most smartphone shipments in the year from 2023, even though iPhone shipments declined by 1 percent to 225.9 million units. Samsung’s smartphone shipments also saw a 1 percent decline to 222.9 million units in 2024 and it finished just beneath Apple. Xiaomi continued its strong growth, finishing third on the list, registering a 15 percent growth to 168.6 million units. Transsion Holdings, which owns brands like Tecno, Infinix, and Itel, ranked fourth, while Oppo (including OnePlus) rounded off the top five. While iPhone 15 topped the charts of the best-selling smartphones of 2024, Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max ranked second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, the Galaxy A15 was the only other phone in the top five rankings, earning the fourth place, and the iPhone 16 Pro completed the top five list. Interestingly, no other brand apart from Apple and Samsung had a device in the top 10 best-selling list. It was dominated by Apple with seven iPhone models, followed by Samsung’s three offerings, although only one was a flagship device; Galaxy S24 Ultra. The entire list of the top 10 best-selling smartphones is as follows: iPhone 15 iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone 15 Pro Max Samsung Galaxy A15 iPhone 16 Pro iPhone 15 Pro iPhone 16 Samsung Galaxy A15 5G Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra iPhone 13 As per the market research firm, 2025 brings complexities both globally and regionally. Growth is said to have slowed down as several markets reach a point of saturation. Thus, vendors may have to find the correct balance between short-term performance, inventory management and long-term investments to succeed.
