  1. West Coast Eagles star Harley Reid avoids serious injury, will be on managed program ahead of round one West Coast Eagles star Harley Reid avoids serious injury, will be on managed program ahead of round one West Coast young gun Harley Reid and key forward Jake Waterman are expected to resume pre-season training next week after shaking off injuries. And the Eagles expect midfield bull Elliot Yeo to return from ankle surgery in the “first month of the season”. The extent of Reid’s ankle injury remained a mystery until Tuesday night when the club revealed the 19-year-old No. 1 draft pick would work through a modified program for the remainder of this week. “Harley has had a really good training block post-Christmas, and had a little bit of ankle soreness last Friday,” Eagles high performance manager Mat Inness said. “With a long year ahead, we’re just looking after him this week, using it as a de-load week for him, and we expect him to be back training next week.” Waterman, who earned a coveted All-*********** blazer last season after kicking a career high 53 goals, has missed the last two sessions with back soreness. He will also remain on modified duties this week before resuming with the full squad. “Jake had a little bit of back soreness last Friday,” Inness told the Eagles website. “He hasn’t missed anything the whole pre-season, so we are using this week just to modify his loads a bit, and will hopefully see him back training next week.” Yeo damaged the medial ligaments in his right knee and suffered a syndesmosis in his right ankle after being tackled in match simulation. “Yeo had ankle syndesmosis surgery which all went to plan,” Inness said. “We expect to see him hopefully back playing in the first month of the season.” Prized Richmond recruit Liam Baker, who suffered a minor ankle injury last week, has since returned to full training. Camera IconHarley Reid at West Coast Eagles training. Credit: Riley Churchman/The West *********** “He had a slightly rolled ankle but didn’t miss any running and he’s now back in full training,” Inness said. Channel Seven analyst Kane Cornes this week said it was critical for Reid to build a solid training base leading into his second AFL season. “He has had an interrupted pre-season and to me, this guy needs to train and train with consistency and needs to build the habits that are required to be the superstar that we all hope he gets to,” Cornes said on SEN. “I think Harley Reid needs to learn how to train. “And that’s fine. He’s 19. I don’t think he’s yet training at the level that is required and is not living to elite standards that some other players are – but that’s OK, some players take five or six years to get that. I hope he gets it sooner. Just temper your expectations I reckon of what Harley Reid is going to deliver (in 2025).” Source link #West #Coast #Eagles #star #Harley #Reid #avoids #injury #managed #program #ahead Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. I tested OpenAI’s o1 model in Microsoft Copilot and it’s a little overwhelming I tested OpenAI’s o1 model in Microsoft Copilot and it’s a little overwhelming Microsoft’s integration of OpenAI’s o1 model into Copilot last week brought the “Think Deeper” feature to all users. Think Deeper houses OpenAI’s o1, a reasoning model capable of some pretty good reasoning capabilities and complex insights, despite taking longer than a regular AI model to respond. OpenAI launched o1 as part of ChatGPT last year, but this CoPilot integration spells the first time you can access the model for an extended ******* at no extra cost. You can turn on the o1 model by clicking on the Think Deeper button before submitting the request. As for why you might want to use Think Deeper, well it gives you access to the complex reasoning and searching that OpenAI’s o1 model is capable of, and also offers enormous improvements in terms of memory. Where standard Copilot models tend to forget quickly, the Think Deeper mode keeps track of what you request and the context throughout your conversation. AI interior design (Image credit: Screenshot Microsoft Copilot) To put the model through its paces, I started with a somewhat straightforward request that had some wrinkles. I asked, “I want to renovate my small bedroom on a budget of $500. Can you suggest cost-effective ways to improve its look and functionality?” The AI came back with not only a budget breakdown for different ideas, but detailed suggestions for paint colors, lighting, furniture, and personal items. It even offered ideas for cost-free changes like scents and sounds before capping off with questions to consider, a bit of philosophy, and a Frank Lloyd Wright inspirational anecdote. Travel time (Image credit: Screenshot Microsoft Copilot) For my next query, I went a little broader and more complex, asking Copilot, “I’m planning a 5-day trip to London on a $2,500 budget. Can you help me plan an itinerary that includes must-see attractions, affordable lodging, and transportation tips?” The response was a lot like talking to a travel agent, one who wanted to “craft a journey where every moment immerses you in the heartbeat of this vibrant city, all while keeping your wallet happy.” The AI then set up a whole itinerary, with each day its own theme, like “The Royal Welcome” and “East London’s Edge.” Each had the day mapped out with things to do, their prices, ideas for where to eat and stay, and approximate costs. Were I planning such a trip as a first-timer to London, I could think of a lot worse as an outline to use before I left. Notably, as with the redecorating request, Copilot became very philosophical again at the end, keeping up the travel agent theme by reminding me that “Travel is more than ticking off landmarks; it’s about the moments that resonate with your own journey. Perhaps you’d love an afternoon sketching by the Thames, delving into quirky bookstores, or finding the perfect spot to watch the city’s skyline light up.” Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Playing Cupid (Image credit: Screenshot Microsoft Copilot) For my last experiment, I went as simple as possible and asked Copilot to describe a perfect first date. As you can see above, the response is phrased in a very human style. Most notably, the AI remembered my earlier mention of DIY projects at home and decided to incorporate them into all of the date ideas. Whether these would actually be good first dates is debatable, but at least the AI is paying attention and remembering our earlier chat. Copilot without the o1 model is definitely quicker but usually shallower as well. That’s great for simple tasks but can mean there’s a need for a lot of manual tweaking. Copilot with o1 is smarter, more thoughtful, and much better at maintaining context, but it sometimes gets lost in its own brilliance. That said, it does feel more like an actual AI collaborator. So, if you need deep AI-powered insights, asking Copilot to Think Deeper is a great idea. Just don’t use it when you’re in a hurry, because in those circumstances, a brilliant overthinker is not ideal. 3. New Bedford’s historic St. Lawrence Martyr Church being restored: How you can help New Bedford’s historic St. Lawrence Martyr Church being restored: How you can help NEW BEDFORD — The beauty of the landmark granite edifice that is St. Lawrence Martyr Church on Summer Street has struck parishioners and visitors for generation after generation. The time has come for work on the imposing 19th century structure, designed by renowned church architect Patrick Charles Keely, to maintain that beauty. Two renovation projects are underway. “People walk into St. Lawrence Church and the first thing they see is a very beautiful church,” said church pastor, the Rev. Michael Racine. “We’re trying to keep the beauty of this church,” he said. “There’s certainly a great need for the work.” Fr. Michael Racine makes his way down a set of steps whose walls have suffered heavily from water damage at the St. Lawrence Church on County Street in New Bedford which will undergo major interior repairs. The church is still actively looking for donations to help pay for the project. First step: Restore church clock tower The first project is timely indeed, restoration of the church clock tower. “That’s going to be done through a company called Verdin Bells that also does clock towers, restores clock faces,” Racine said. The work will not involve church bells. ‘I hope for a full house’: St. Lawrence Church in New Bedford celebrates bicentennial Fr. Michael Racine points to the wall areas on the sides of the altar which need to be repaired at the St. Lawrence Church on County Street in New Bedford which will undergo major interior repairs. Next step: Repaint and restore church’s interior The second project will be to paint and plaster the church’s interior, which hasn’t been done in years. The $28,000 clock tower project has received final approval from the Diocese of Fall River, he said, and the work will be done in the spring. The $200,000 painting-plastering project could begin following Easter, but that will depend on fundraising efforts. While most of the clock tower money has been secured thanks to a substantial family donation, the church has recently embarked on fundraising for the second project. The church is still actively looking for donations to help pay for the project. How to donate and help church restoration Racine said people can donate to either project online at whalingcitycatholics.org. Go to St. Lawrence and click “donate.” He said the church will continue its weekly Sunday Mass at 11:30 a.m., and all other services throughout the work. “Funerals will not be interrupted. Weddings will not be interrupted. Baptisms will still take place. The church will not close during this.” St. Lawrence’s long history in New Bedford The original church was established as St. Mary’s in 1821, and was located on Allen Street, according to a history written by the Rev. Barry W. Wall, who was retired from St. Lawrence, grew up in the parish and was a graduate of Holy Family High School in New Bedford. The familiar granite structure on County Street was built after the Civil War and was dedicated by Bishop John J. Williams of Boston in honor of Saint Lawrence in 1871. Saint Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of Rome who were martyred in the persecution of the Christians ordered by the Roman Emperor Valerian in the year 258. 8. Brisbane Lions great Michael Voss pays much-loved figure Troy Selwood highest AFL compliment Brisbane Lions great Michael Voss pays much-loved figure Troy Selwood highest AFL compliment Tributes are flowing for Troy Selwood after the former AFL player was found dead in a Geelong home on Tuesday morning. The AFL world has been left numb by the sudden death of the 40-year-old, while Brisbane Lions great and Carlton coach Michael Voss has recalled a Troy Selwood moment from a game that still gives him “goose bumps”. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Former AFL player Troy Selwood dies aged 40. Selwood played 75 games for Brisbane during a time when Voss was coaching the club he led to three premierships. And after learning of Selwood’s death on Tuesday, Voss recalled a game in Round 7, 2009 where there was incident between Troy and Richmond star Alex Rance (watch the video above). Camera IconThe collision between Rance and Selwood was described as a car ******. Credit: 7NEWS At the time, the incident was described as “a fair-dinkum car ******” by then Richmond coach Terry Wallace. Both players attacked the ball at full speed and as they collided the crack of their heads “could be heard around the ground” (according to the AFL’s website). “Both players lay dazed on the turf as the game was halted for four minutes before Rance was taken to the Richmond rooms on the medicart. Selwood was assisted to the bench, just metres away,” the AFL said. Rance fractured cheekbone and was taken directly to Epworth hospital while Selwood was unable to return to the field. “Every now again as a coach you get goose bumps about different things,” Voss said on Tuesday. “And I got goose bumps when I saw that. “I thought, ‘That’s what teamwork is all about’.” It’s high praise from Voss who is one Brisbane’s greatest ever superstars, and arguably the club’s bravest ever player. Credit: Getty Images But it shows the respect the AFL world has (and had) for Troy Selwood. The fearless act also inspired a famous Brisbane comeback. “When you see a commitment like that from one of your teammates, you can’t help but not want to let him down,” Voss said. After his AFL career ended in 2010, Selwood joined Geelong, spending over 10 years at the club. He played in the VFL team, captaining them to the premiership in 2012, before moving into various off-field roles, including football operations, academy manager and talent ID manager from 2017-2021. He departed the club in 2021 to join Collingwood as list and recruiting manager, but he stepped down after just six weeks due to health reasons. Selwood then landed a new position at Geelong Grammar School as head of football and sports mentor. Geelong CEO Steve Hocking was “extremely saddened” by the news. “The news today has had a deep impact on many current and former players and staff,” Hocking said. “Troy had a great spirit and energy and was someone who always cared about others. He had a passion for working with young people and helping them achieve their dreams of playing elite football. “On behalf of the Geelong Football Club, we extend our deepest sympathies to Troy’s family, children and friends.” Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann also paid tribute. “On behalf of the Brisbane Lions, we extend our deepest condolences to the entire Selwood family at this very difficult time,” he said. “Troy was much loved amongst his teammates and respected across the industry for his work in multiple football roles.” West Coast were also connected to the Selwood family with Troy’s twin Adam playing at the Eagles, as well as the youngest Scott. “On behalf of the club, I offer our deepest condolences to Troy’s family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time,” CEO Don Pyke said. “The Selwood family have brought so much joy to the football community, and we offer our compassionate support in their time of need.” AFL CEO Andrew Dillon also released a statement. “On behalf of the AFL our thoughts are with the entire Selwood family and the wider football industry following the tragic passing of Troy Selwood,” he said. “Troy was an incredible advocate for AFL Talent Pathways programs both in his role as a club recruiter and more recently during his time at Geelong Grammar. “He demonstrated a core purpose to always place the needs of young players first and created environments where they could be themselves. “Troy always bought a sense of positivity, humour and care to the recruiting and talent development process and will be sadly missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to work with him. “We send our deepest sympathies to Joel, Adam, Scott, Bryce, Maree and the entire Selwood family, the staff and students at Geelong Grammar and all those who knew him in the football family at this time.” If you need help in a crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14. 10. AI systems could be ‘caused to suffer’ if consciousness achieved, says research | Artificial intelligence (AI) AI systems could be ‘caused to suffer’ if consciousness achieved, says research | Artificial intelligence (AI) Artificial intelligence systems capable of feelings or self-awareness are at risk of being harmed if the technology is developed irresponsibly, according to an open letter signed by AI practitioners and thinkers including Sir Stephen Fry. More than 100 experts have put forward five principles for conducting responsible research into AI consciousness, as rapid advances raise concerns that such systems could be considered sentient. The principles include prioritising research on understanding and assessing consciousness in AIs, in order to prevent “mistreatment and suffering”. The other principles are: setting constraints on developing conscious AI systems; taking a phased approach to developing such systems; sharing findings with the public; and refraining from making misleading or overconfident statements about creating conscious AI. The letter’s signatories include academics such as Sir Anthony Finkelstein at the University of London and AI professionals at companies including Amazon and the advertising group WPP. It has been published alongside a research paper that outlines the principles. The paper argues that conscious AI systems could be built in the near future – or at least ones that give the impression of being conscious. “It may be the case that large numbers of conscious systems could be created and caused to suffer,” the researchers say, adding that if powerful AI systems were able to reproduce themselves it could lead to the creation of “large numbers of new beings deserving moral consideration”. The paper, written by Oxford University’s Patrick Butlin and Theodoros Lappas of the Athens University of Economics and Business, adds that even companies not intending to create conscious systems will need guidelines in case of “inadvertently creating conscious entities”. It acknowledges that there is widespread uncertainty and disagreement over defining consciousness in AI systems and whether it is even possible, but says it is an issue that “we must not ignore”. Other questions raised by the paper focus on what to do with an AI system if it is defined as a “moral patient” – an entity that matters morally “in its own right, for its own sake”. In that scenario, it questions if destroying the AI would be comparable to killing an animal. The paper, published in the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, also warned that a mistaken belief that AI systems are already conscious could lead to a waste of political energy as misguided efforts are made to promote their ********. The paper and letter were organised by Conscium, a research organisation part-funded by WPP and co-founded by WPP’s chief AI officer, Daniel Hulme. Last year a group of senior academics argued there was a “realistic possibility” that some AI systems will be conscious and “morally significant” by 2035. In 2023, Sir Demis Hassabis, the head of Google’s AI programme and a Nobel prize winner, said AI systems were “definitely” not sentient currently but could be in the future. “Philosophers haven’t really settled on a definition of consciousness yet but if we mean sort of self-awareness, these kinds of things, I think there’s a possibility AI one day could be,” he said in an interview with US broadcaster CBS. 13. Super Bowl 2025: Saquon Barkley’s stunning season stats for Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl 2025: Saquon Barkley’s stunning season stats for Philadelphia Eagles Philadelphia general manager Howie Roseman had no hesitation in handing Barkley what equates to around $12.6m (£10.2m) a season – the third highest amount for a current running back. “It was not a hard trigger to pull,” said Roseman. “I’d like to say he’s exceeded expectations, but he’s always been one of the best players I’ve ever seen. “So I’m really not surprised by any of this, and I don’t say that in an arrogant way, it’s based on who he is, nothing to do with me, because this is who he’s always been. And I’m just glad everyone gets to see that.” Derrick Henry had another huge season after signing for the Baltimore Ravens as a free agent running back, but does that mean more will follow suit? Barkley and Henry are generational talents, and Barkley may well go down as one of the best ever once his time in Philadelphia is over. Running backs are seen as replaceable as many believe they are only as good as the team around them – if their offensive line can open up space for them to run. True, the Eagles have one of the best in the game, but Barkley finds holes where there are none, and he’s proven that a talent like his deserves to play on a team that can showcase it best. Running backs may not suddenly become the go-to free agent signing, but Barkley was right to be paid – and on Sunday in New Orleans he could provide that one magical moment that makes all the difference. If he does, it will be money very, very well spent. Source link #Super #Bowl #Saquon #Barkleys #stunning #season #stats #Philadelphia #Eagles Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  14. South Korean airline to ban power banks stored overhead South Korean airline to ban power banks stored overhead South Korea’s Air Busan will not allow passengers to keep power banks in luggage stored in overhead cabin bins, in what it called a preemptive measure after one of its planes was engulfed in flames last week. An investigation led by South Korean authorities into the fire has begun, but no cause has yet been determined. Air accidents are nearly always caused by a combination of factors, according to experts. Passenger carry-on bags inspected at boarding gates and found not to contain power banks will be tagged and then allowed in overhead luggage bins, in measures set to begin on Friday on trial routes, before expanding to all flights. Any power banks should be kept with passengers so any overheating, smoke or fire can quickly be spotted and dealt with. Air Busan said the changes, which will also include additional crew fire training and fire containment equipment on board, were in response to an increase in the number of power banks overheating. The fire, which began on January 28 while preparing for departure to Hong Kong, was first detected by a flight attendant in an overhead luggage bin in the rear left-hand side of the plane, Air Busan has said. All on board were evacuated safely. Lithium batteries are a type of rechargeable battery found in devices such as laptops, mobile phones, tablets, spare power banks and electronic cigarettes. Global aviation standards say they must not be placed in checked-in luggage because they can start intense fires if they short circuit due to damage or manufacturing faults. Cabin crew have fire extinguishers and thermal containment boxes or bags to isolate problematic devices on board. 15. Rates could stay at this level for a while Rates could stay at this level for a while Some mortgage rates have decreased while others have increased. According to Zillow, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate has dropped by three basis points to 6.55%, but the 15-year fixed interest rate is up by one basis point to 5.88%. Economists don’t expect mortgage rates to fall drastically throughout 2025 — especially not for the first several months. A mortgage calculator can help you see how different mortgage term lengths and interest rates will impact your monthly payments. Use the free Yahoo Finance mortgage calculator to play around with different outcomes. Our calculator also considers factors like property taxes and homeowners insurance when estimating your monthly mortgage payment. This gives you a better idea of your total monthly payment than if you just looked at mortgage principal and interest. Today’s average 30-year mortgage rate is 6.55%. A 30-year term is the most popular type of mortgage because by spreading out your payments over 360 months, your monthly payment is relatively low. If you had a $300,000 mortgage with a 30-year term and a 6.55% rate, your monthly payment toward the principal and interest would be about $1,906, and you’d pay $386,109 in interest over the life of your loan — on top of that original $300,000. The average 15-year mortgage rate is 5.88% today. Several factors must be considered when deciding between a 15-year and 30-year mortgage. A 15-year mortgage comes with a lower interest rate than a 30-year term. This is great in the long run because you’ll pay off your loan 15 years sooner, and that’s 15 fewer years for interest to compound. However, because you’re squeezing the same debt payoff into half the time, your monthly payments will be higher. If you get that same $300,000 mortgage but with a 15-year term and a 5.88% rate, your monthly payment would jump up to $2,512 — but you’d only pay $152,189 in interest over the years. Dig deeper: How much house can I afford? Use our home affordability calculator. With an adjustable-rate mortgage, your rate is locked in for a set ******* of time and then increases or decreases periodically. For example, with a 5/1 ARM, your rate stays the same for the first five years, then changes every year. Adjustable rates usually start lower than fixed rates, but you run the risk that your rate goes up once the introductory rate-lock ******* is over. But an ARM could be a good fit if you plan to sell the home before your rate-lock ******* ends — that way, you pay a lower rate without worrying about it rising later. ARM rates have also been higher than fixed rates lately. Before dedicating yourself to a fixed or adjustable mortgage rate, be sure to shop around for the best lenders and rates. Some will offer more competitive adjustable rates than others. Mortgage lenders typically give the lowest mortgage rates to people with higher down payments, excellent credit scores, and low debt-to-income ratios. So if you want a lower rate, try saving more, improving your credit score, or paying down some debt before you start shopping for homes. You can also buy down your interest rate permanently by paying for discount points at closing. A temporary interest rate buydown is also an option — for example, maybe you get a 6% rate with a 2-1 buydown. Your rate would start at 4% for year one, increase to 5% for year two, then settle in at 6% for the remainder of your term. Just consider whether these buydowns are worth the extra money at closing. Ask yourself whether you’ll stay in the home long enough that the amount you save with a lower rate offsets the cost of buying down your rate before making your decision. 16. ‘Switch 2 can’t come soon enough’: Nintendo lowers forecast again as Switch sales decline 30% ‘Switch 2 can’t come soon enough’: Nintendo lowers forecast again as Switch sales decline 30% Nintendo has lowered its Nintendo Switch sales forecast by a further 1.5 million units, as sales continue to decline in the runup to the launch of its next-gen console. In its latest earnings report for the three months ended December 31, Nintendo said it lowered its hardware sales forecast to 11m, which is the second reduction in a row after it lowered its 13.5m forecast to 12.5m in November. The company also lowered its operating profit outlook by a further 22% to ¥280 billion ($1.8bn). Nintendo Switch sold 4.82m Switch consoles during the quarter, for a total of 150.86m life-to-date. The Switch has to clear 154 million (Nintendo DS) and at least 160 million (PS2) to become the best-selling console in history. Year-on-year, Switch hardware sales are down more than 30%, and software sales are down 24%, which Nintendo partly attributes to the boost provided by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (released in May 2023) and Super Mario Bros. Wonder (released in October 2023) in its previous fiscal year. The Switch is now approaching eight years old, and Nintendo finally announced plans to release Nintendo Switch 2 last month, along with plans for worldwide hands-on events starting in April. Dr Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based game industry consultancy Kantan Games, told VGC the results suggest that Nintendo Switch 2 “cannot come soon enough” and questioned what games the company would use to fill the gap. Currently, on a Xenoblade remaster is scheduled for Switch. “It is now much clearer how Nintendo overestimated the life that is still left in the Switch at the start of the fiscal year,” he said. “Nintendo now revised the hardware sales forecast two times, and I expect them to miss even this lowered forecast. “I’m not sure why they thought they would sell 14 million units this fiscal year with a very dry software slate. Switch 2 cannot come soon enough. I hope for them it is not scheduled for fall, like not too few people believe.” The company’s results for the first three months of its current fiscal year report an operating profit of ¥247.5 billion ($1.59 billion), which is down 87% compared to the same ******* last year. THE BEST-SELLING SWITCH GAMES *As of December 31, 2024 (compared to September 2024) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 67.35m (+2.08m) Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 47.44m (+0.99m) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 35.88m (+0.74m) Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 32.62m (+0.33m) Super Mario Odyssey – 29.04m (+0.54m) Pokemon Sword/Shield – 26.60m (+0.16m) Pokémon Scarlet & Violet – 26.38m (+0.69m) Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – 21.55m (+0.51m) Super Mario Party – 21.10m (+0.12m) New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 18.06 (+0.29m) In software (covering October through December), the Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (released in September) recorded a further 1.3 million sales for a total of 3.91 million. Super Mario Party Jamboree (released in October) has sold 6.17 million units – a best for the series in its first 11 weeks – and Mario & Luigi Brothership (released in November) sold 1.4 million copies. Despite a year-on-year decline in hardware sales, Nintendo estimates a record 129 million annual playing users for 2024, which is up from 127 million in 2023. The proportion of digital sales has increased 2.9% this fiscal year to 51%, Nintendo said. Going forwards, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD was released in January, and Nintendo plans to follow this up with Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition in March. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legenda Z-A will both release in 2025, Nintendo reiterated. 17. stocks, news, earnings and data stocks, news, earnings and data Infineon shares jump after earnings report Shares of ******* semiconductor maker Infineon gained 10.9% by 8:25 a.m. London time, lifting the company to the top of the Stoxx 600 index. Infineon reported its fiscal first-quarter results on Tuesday, with revenue coming in at 3.42 billion euros ($3.54 billion) — down 13% quarter-on-quarter. The firm attributed the decline to weaker demand across all of its key divisions. Despite the quarterly-revenue contraction, the company’s income beat its own forecasts. In November, the company said it expected to generate revenue of around 3.2 billion euros in the first quarter of its fiscal 2025. On Tuesday, Infineon raised its full-year guidance, saying it now expects 2025 revenue to be flat or increase slightly. Previously, it had forecast a slight decline in revenue for the year. The forecast revision was based on a change in the assumed euro/U.S. dollar exchange rate. “The change to Infineon’s outlook is [around] 3% to 4% above current revenue consensus and, even if the outlook raise is just FX driven, we think it positive that management have managed expectations well to begin the year, setting a base from which the stock can appreciate further as the cycle should turn later in the year,” Citi analysts said in a note on Tuesday. — Chloe Taylor Spirits maker Diageo removes medium-term guidance on U.S. tariff uncertainty Bottles of Diageo-owned Johnnie Walker Red Label whisky in a supermarket in Chelmsford, ***, on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025. 18. Opera’s new Air browser will encourage you take breaks from the internet Opera’s new Air browser will encourage you take breaks from the internet is introducing Opera Air, a new web browser designed around mindfulness. The app has a “minimalist Scandinavian design” and frosted glass accents, which blend well with the mindfulness concept. While pretty, Opera Air has features for relaxation, concentration, resting, and more, which you normally only see in meditation apps. There are four break modes: breathing, neck exercises, meditation and “full body scan.” Breathing exercises and meditation can help calm you down by lowering stress levels, while neck exercises help loosen sore neck muscles. The full body scan is a different type of meditation that involves focusing your attention on various body parts and the sensations that arise. These breaks can be as short as three minutes or as long as 15. Breaks can be taken voluntarily or by setting a timer. Opera Air also incorporates binaural beats as “boosts.” Binaural beats are an audio illusion created when two slightly different frequencies are played in each ear, tricking the brain into “hearing” a third frequency. Opera Air has several boosts that improve creativity, help with focus and induce relaxation, among others. Opera even claimed that one can help users recall dreams. According to Senior Director of Product at Opera Mohamed Salah, the web is beautiful, but the company wants to “look at science-based ways” to help users navigate chaotic (and sometimes hostile) . While mindfulness apps like exist, Opera Air packs those features in the app many people use most frequently. 20. ‘My son was 18 and went to Ukraine as cannon fodder’ ‘My son was 18 and went to Ukraine as cannon fodder’ Being dropped off at the airport often marks the start of an exciting adventure for many 18-year-olds. For James Wilton, who had volunteered to fight for Ukraine just months after finishing college, it would ultimately lead to his death. The teenager from Huddersfield was killed in a drone attack in the village of Terny on the eastern front. “He had his whole life in front of him,” says James’ father, Graham. “I would swap places with him tomorrow just so he could be sat at home having a pint and watching the darts. “I’m 52, I have lived my life. He was 18, who knows what he could have done? He didn’t have a life, that’s the worst part of it.” Graham Wilton’s 18-year-old son James was killed while fighting in Ukraine [Steve Jones/BBC] According to Graham, James had wanted to join the British Army when he left Royds Hall High School aged 16. Instead he chose to enrol on a course in animal land care at Kirklees College. Aged 17 and nearing the end of his education, Graham says James began to discuss wanting to go to Ukraine to help with the war effort. Neither Graham, James’ mother, or his older sisters Sarah, 21, or Sophie, 22, had wanted the youngest member of the family to go, but they were unable to convince him to change his mind. “I sat down with him and had various conversations about why he wanted to do it, what I thought about it, and in the end he decided it was something he wanted to do,” says Graham, who lived with his only son. “I suppose he thought it was a bit of an adventure and he was going out there to help and hopefully make a difference.” Graham says he reluctantly supported James, adding: “If I hadn’t have done it I would have woken up one morning and he would have gone. “Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Could I have changed his mind? No.” James Wilton travelled to Ukraine to fight Russian forces after leaving college [Doug Seeburg] Graham dropped James off at Manchester Airport on 28 April. From there he caught a flight to Krakow then boarded a bus to Ternopil, where he joined up with the International Legion and underwent a basic training programme lasting about four weeks. Speaking ahead of the third anniversary of the start of the war later this month, Graham says his son and his comrades, who hailed from all over the world and had varying degrees of military experience, were “totally ill-equipped” and used as “cannon fodder”. Still, he was unaware of James having any regrets about his decision during their regular telephone conversations, which Graham says were borne out of his son’s desire to hold on to some “normality”. “He met some wonderful people and he would have had a lot of lifelong friends should he have survived.” ‘I’ll come and get you’ James was deployed to the east of the country as he and comrades sought to halt the grinding Russian advance spreading northwards from the occupied Donetsk region. Graham says his son was on his first mission in July when he was killed running between two trenches in a field with no cover. They had spoken just the previous night. “He seemed OK. He did say at some point ‘I don’t think I’m going to be here as long as what I might be. It’s a little bit different to what I thought’. “I said: ‘It’s up to you. If anything goes wrong or pear-shaped I’ll come and get you’. That was always an option if he decided he didn’t want to be there.” According to the International Legion website, volunteers, who are paid for their service, can terminate their contract after six months. “The mission he went on, he didn’t have to go. But because his best mate at the time was going he decided ‘well I’m going as well’. “Given the circumstances I would have probably done exactly the same.” Graham says his son had ambitions of joining the British Army after school [Handout] In December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted his country had suffered 43,000 fatalities as a result of the war with another 370,000 soldiers wounded. The death toll of Russian forces was estimated at about 200,000. Neither of these figures has been independently verified. Graham made the 1,800-mile trip to Ukraine for his son’s ********. Reflecting on his death, he says James died “doing something he felt strongly about”. “It’s very, very sad and unfortunate that he didn’t get to make as much difference as he would have liked. “What happened to James unfortunately will probably be happening to someone else in the middle of a field in eastern Ukraine. “It’s time people back home actually realised what it’s like out there.” Back at the home Graham and James shared in Lindley, life is “quiet”. “He grew up to be a nice young man and he would get on with anybody. “I’ll go home tonight and he’s not sat there playing Playstation, it’s weird. “We were great. We would sit there and have something to eat and talk about all sorts of stuff. There wasn’t anything, as far as I know, that he wouldn’t tell me, which is why he was open with me when he decided what he was doing.” The night before James left he had spent the night with his father “laughing and joking” and drinking beer in front of the TV. Graham’s grief is still raw. “It’s just so draining. You try not to think about it, you are sort of OK then something comes up and it sets you going again. “He was possibly a younger version of me. Maybe if I was him at a younger age I would have probably done the same thing.” Listen to highlights from West Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North or tell us a story you think we should be covering here. 22. Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens promises $50k for Albany hospice hub if Labor re-elected Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens promises $50k for Albany hospice hub if Labor re-elected Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens announced last week a pledge of $50,000 towards the building of a new care hub for Albany Community Hospice if Labor are re-elected in the upcoming State election. The hub will be launched later in the year and will combine new services with the existing Butterflies Op Shop. Albany Community Hospice clinical manager Fiona Jane said combining the two services would make the palliative care services offered more accessible to the community. “The creation of a hospice hub has been identified as being an extension of the work we do at hospice, but with broader impact building on and developing community resources and networks that will support a person and/or their carer requiring support in the local community,” she said. “As a not-for-profit we are excited by the $50,000 pledge by Rebecca Stephens as we currently do not have funds allocated toward the establishment of the hospice hub, and we believe its establishment has the potential to have a positive impact on our community on many levels.” The hub aims to increase the efficiency and impact of specialist palliative care services the hospice already provides for free in the community. Ms Stephens said the funding injection would enable a new community-first approach to palliative care in the Great Southern and provide a positive way for the community to connect with the hospice. “The Albany (Community) Hospice is very close to my heart and is pivotal to the Albany community,” Ms Stephens said. “The hospice hub will educate the general public about palliative care as an extension of the incredibly valuable work the hospice currently does, assisting it to move beyond fundraising and volunteering by co-locating the hub with the Butterflies Op Shop. “This investment will provide broad and incredibly positive impact to the community, building on and developing available community resources and networks supporting people and their carers.” Source link #Albany #MLA #Rebecca #Stephens #promises #50k #Albany #hospice #hub #Labor #reelected Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  23. MS Coast agents find fentanyl in A/C vent & 15,000 drug-laced pills, DEA agent says MS Coast agents find fentanyl in A/C vent & 15,000 drug-laced pills, DEA agent says A Jan. 30 traffic stop led to an undercover drug investigation that resulted in the seizure of over two pounds of fentanyl and 15,556 fentanyl-laced pills, according to Gulfport police DEA agent James Nix. The investigation began after drug agents first stopped Marcus “Spurt” Agee for driving with an expired license plate. Inside his car, the agent said, authorities found about 58 grams of fentanyl. Afterward, Agee agreed to set up a buy, but the plan backfired on him after an alleged drug dealer told authorities he could lead them to Agee’s “stash” spot at a home in the 800 block of 23rd Street. Inside the home, agents found over 2.3 pounds of fentanyl hidden behind an air conditioner vent and thousands of blue drug-laced pills in the home’s attic. Both Agee and the home’s owner, identified as Jermiya Renee Spears, are now jailed without bond on federal charges of conspiracy to distribute drugs. After their arrests, Nix said Spears admitted conspiring with Agee to stash the drugs at the home. After the initial traffic stop, Agee agreed to buy more fentanyl from his alleged drug dealer. He then called the dealer to buy over two ounces of fentanyl, referred to by Agee as “juice.” The two agreed to meet behind a Sonic near Walmart in Gulfport to do the transaction.. The alleged seller turned the tables on Agee at that point, according to Nix, and told the agents that he had sold fentanyl to Agee on various occasions in recent weeks, adding that he could lead them to Agee’s “stash” spot. The drug agents went to the home armed with a search warrant that led to the seizure. Both Agee and Spears remained jailed without bond. In addition, the alleged seller, Gulfport police arrested Marcus Taneal Lloyd, 35, and Tracy Antione McCall, 39, on charges of possession of a controlled substance..
