Nothing Phone 3a Teased to Come With a Camera Button for Quick Snapshots Nothing Phone 3a Teased to Come With a Camera Button for Quick Snapshots Nothing Phone 3a series is scheduled to be launched on March 4. Ahead of its anticipated debut, the British original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has shared a teaser of one of the purported phones which hints towards the inclusion of a new button. It is speculated to be a quick shutter that activates the camera, similar to the Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 models. Notably, the base Nothing Phone 3a is tipped to be accompanied by a Pro variant as part of the Phone 3a series, with the latter marking a first for the company. Camera Button on the Nothing Phone 3a Series In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Nothing shared a teaser which provides a glimpse of the phone’s side profile. A new button appears to be placed beneath the power button. While the company is yet to reveal more information, it is widely speculated to be for the camera. If Nothing follows the same path as other OEMs, then a single press of the button may activate the camera while pressing it again would snap a photo. However, fans also speculate that it may have other functionality altogether. One of the theories suggest it could be an alert slider, similar to the one found on devices made by Carl Pei’s former company, OnePlus. Meanwhile, the company is also planning to bet big on artificial intelligence (AI) this year and it may be a button for invoking the Nothing Phone 3a’s voice assistant. Other speculation hints towards it being a multi-purpose toggle for several actions, comparable to the iPhone’s action button which can be set to perform different functions such as putting the phone on silent mode, activating the flashlight, changing the focus mode, and opening the camera. However, this is based purely on speculation and its purpose is expected to be revealed in the days leading up to the launch of the Nothing Phone 3a series, which is scheduled for March 4. SpinTel’s speedy NBN 250 plan is still the best deal of its kind – and it’s gotten even faster since I last recommended it SpinTel’s speedy NBN 250 plan is still the best deal of its kind – and it’s gotten even faster since I last recommended it It’s not often that we take the opportunity to regularly recommend a single NBN provider for most people, but then again, not many providers offer as consistently good value as SpinTel. Its NBN 250 plan is a great example of this – not only does it offer the lowest introductory price of any of the major internet service providers (ISPs), but it also has the lowest ongoing costs, too. What’s more, the regular monthly cost (the price you’ll pay after the 6 month introductory *******) is only AU$8 more than its slower NBN 100 plan. Translation: you get more than double the speed for only a 10% price increase. In our opinion, SpinTel’s 250Mbps NBN plan is the epitome of value for money. SpinTel is a TechRadar preferred partner (What does this mean?) More, for less We’ve previously waxed lyrical about SpinTel’s NBN 250 plan in July 2024. At the time, the plan quoted a typical evening speed – the speed you can expect to achieve in the busier evening hours of 7pm to 11pm – of 211Mbps. Quite a few other providers comfortably beat this, but SpinTel has since revised its figure to a much more competitive 240Mbps. Plus, the introductory price has come down by AU$1. Getting more for less is about as good as it gets. Get the kit to get connected In order to take advantage of SpinTel’s incredibly cheap NBN 250 plan, you first need to make sure you have the right connection at home. Because NBN 250 plans are considered very high speed, you’ll need to have a fibre to the premises (FTTP) or hybrid fibre coax (HFC) connection. If you don’t have one of those technologies at home, don’t worry, as you may be in an eligible suburb to take up NBN Co’s free fibre upgrade. SpinTel supports this program, so when you enter your address, you’ll be told if you already have an FTTP connection or not. If you don’t, you can still order this NBN 250 plan and SpinTel will handle the process of getting your home upgraded to newer technology. (Do note, however, that those living in apartment buildings generally can’t get this upgrade.) Great value everywhere If you feel an NBN 250 plan might be overkill for your home, or perhaps still not fast enough, SpinTel’s NBN 100 and NBN 1000 plans also offer epic value. The telco’s 100Mbps plan, which is available for all NBN connection types, has a low introductory cost of AU$65p/m for 6 months, after which it increases to AU$81.95p/m, the lowest of any of the major providers. The result is not only one of the lowest first year costs, but the only one whose ongoing yearly cost comes in under AU$1,000. It’s a similar story for SpinTel’s gigabit NBN plan, which currently has the lowest introductory cost of any provider at just AU$90p/m. After 6 months, this monthly cost increases to AU$100.95p/m, well below the current average of around AU$120p/m. Do note that this plan advertises a typical evening speed of ‘only’ 650Mbps – most other providers quote 700Mbps to 800Mbps – but once again, we think the low cost of the plan more than makes up for it. Dashing Dyson leads Hawks to slump-busting NBA victory Dashing Dyson leads Hawks to slump-busting NBA victory *********** Dyson Daniels played a superb game to help the Atlanta Hawks snap an eight-game NBA losing streak with a 132-130 win over the Pistons in Detroit. Daniels had 19 points, six rebounds, seven assists, four steals and three blocks against the Pistons on Monday night (Tuesday AEDT). The Aussie’s teammate Trae Young made a 23-foot fadeaway with 1.6 seconds left and scored 17 of his 34 points in the final quarter to help lift the Hawks (23-27) to victory. Daniels became the first Hawk since Paul Millsap eight years ago to have more than 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks in a game – and the 21-year-old *********** did it in three quarters. Cade Cunningham had 30 points and 14 assists for the Pistons (25-25), who failed to attempt a shot on their final possession. In Charlotte, North Carolina, Bilal Coulibaly had 26 points and Corey Kispert scored 25 off the bench on five three-pointers as the visiting Washington Wizards handed the Hornets their fifth straight loss, beating the hosts 124-114. Miles Bridges had his first career triple-double for the Hornets, finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller were both out with injuries. *********** Josh Green chipped in with three rebounds, one assist and 11 points for the Hornets, who have a 12-35 win-loss record. Nick Smith Jr scored 24 points and Mark Williams overcame a sluggish first half to finish with 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Hornets. The Wizards (8-41) outscored the Hornets 46-25 in the second quarter behind Kispert, who had 18 points in the quarter on four threes and led by 26 in the first half. Kyle Kuzma chipped in with 22 points and Jonas Valanciunas added 14 points and 17 rebounds for the Wizards, who have won two straight since snapping a 16-game losing streak. In Oklahoma City, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points in 22 minutes as the Thunder rolled over the short-handed Milwaukee Bucks 125-96. Milwaukee were without injured stars Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Brook Lopez and Khris Middleton, turning what could have been an exciting rematch of the NBA Cup final that Milwaukee won into a blowout. Gilgeous-Alexander, the NBA’s leading scorer, showed no mercy. He scored 21 points on 9-for-11 shooting in the first quarter as the Thunder took a 39-22 lead. He scored 30 in the first half as the Thunder took a 78-44 lead, then left the game for good with 6:17 remaining and the home side ahead 96-54. Ousmane Dieng finished with 21 points and seven rebounds and Isaiah Joe added 18 points for the Thunder, who improved to 39-9 despite All-Star Jalen Williams sitting out with a sprained right wrist. In New York, Jalen Brunson had 42 points and 10 assists, breaking a tie with Carmelo Anthony for third on the franchise list with his 18th 40-point game with the Knicks, as the home side beat the Houston Rockets 124-118. Brunson scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to bring the Knicks back in a game they trailed by 11 after three. He ended up with his 12th game with at least 30 points and 10 assists since coming to New York, passing Hall of Famer Richie Guerin for the most in franchise history. In Minneapolis, DeMar DeRozan scored 33 points as the visiting Sacramento Kings edged the Timberwolves 116-114, and in Memphis Jaren Jackson Jr scored 31 points to help the Grizzlies beat the San Antonio Spurs 128-109. Power company fined $9m over explosion and blackout Power company fined $9m over explosion and blackout A power company has been fined $9 million for allowing a “catastrophic” generator explosion that caused widespread blackouts due to a lack of backup systems. An explosion and fire at the Callide coal-fired power station in central Queensland caused extensive damage to its Callide C turbine hall on May 25, 2021. The subsequent loss of electricity generation overloaded interstate powerlines as the grid tried to match demand, causing a blackout to half a million homes and businesses in Queensland and NSW. In February 2024, the *********** Energy Regulator (AER) took Callide Power Trading Pty Ltd to Federal Court alleging it had failed to comply with its performance standards for Callide C. Federal Court Justice Sarah Derrington on Tuesday found serious procedural breaches had caused “catastrophic failure and destruction” to major infrastructure. “The consequences included the destruction of valuable equipment, the potential for loss of life, loss of power to the grid, and significant, long-term and wide-ranging impacts on the National Electricity Market,” she said. Callide Power Trading Pty Ltd is an intermediary in a joint venture between Queensland government-owned CS Energy and private company IG Power, which is now under administration. Justice Derrington found Callide Power Trading had contravened the National Electricity Rules by failing to maintain redundancy or protection systems when replacing an industrial battery charger. One of the two generators at Callide C used a battery to power the unit’s protection, control and monitoring systems, providing supply to backup equipment such as the emergency lubrication oil pumps. A cascading series of failures during a procedure to replace the battery charger caused the generator to receive a reverse flow of power that led to the turbine spinning like a motor. While the turbine was spinning under external power, its isolated protection systems had no source of electricity, leading to an explosion through a lack of emergency lubrication and control systems. “This impact caused the rotor shaft to tear apart at nine locations. A piece weighing more than two tonnes was thrown five metres across the floor of the turbine hall,” Justice Derrington said. Callide Power Trading was ordered to pay a civil penalty of $9 million and $150,000 in costs. Officer shoots suspect carrying rifle toward Memphis elementary school Officer shoots suspect carrying rifle toward Memphis elementary school MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting near an elementary school in the Vollintine-Evergreen area Monday morning. At around 10:45 a.m., the Memphis Police Department responded to a call regarding a man armed with a rifle at an apartment complex on North Cabana Circle. Police located him near Vollintine Elementary at Hawthorne Street and Vollintine Avenue. They say they pleaded with him to put down the weapon. For reasons now under investigation, an officer then shot the suspect and he dropped the rifle. The MPD says the man was taken to Regional One in critical condition. His name has not been released. The elementary school went on lockdown, but it has since been lifted. Police say the man’s rifle had more than 100 rounds of ammunition. Michael Barfield a security guard at the nearby University Gardens Manor apartments told WREG that guards called police after seeing the man walking down Vollintine, shooting a rifle in the air. They helped police at the scene. Submitted photo shows police with suspect on the ground. “I’m glad that I was one of them that helped save the day helped other people get saved innocent standby people in their houses because a bullet has no name in it. If you’re shooting in the air, it gotta come down,” said Barfield. “For circumstances still being investigated and sorted out, one officer did discharge his weapon, and the officers immediately rendered first aid,” said Assistant Chief of Police Services Don Crowe. The guard said the man did not enter the apartment complex and doesn’t live there. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Meta says it may stop development of AI systems it deems too risky Meta says it may stop development of AI systems it deems too risky Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pledged to make artificial general intelligence (AGI) — which is roughly defined as AI that can accomplish any task a human can — openly available one day. But in a new policy document, Meta suggests that there are certain scenarios in which it may not release a highly capable AI system it developed internally. The document, which Meta is calling its Frontier AI Framework, identifies two types of AI systems the company considers too risky to release: “high risk” and “critical risk” systems. As Meta defines them, both “high-risk” and “critical-risk” systems are capable of aiding in cybersecurity, chemical, and biological attacks, the difference being that “critical-risk” systems could result in a “catastrophic outcome [that] cannot be mitigated in [a] proposed deployment context.” High-risk systems, by contrast, might make an attack easier to carry out but not as reliably or dependably as a critical risk system. Which sort of attacks are we talking about here? Meta gives a few examples, like the “automated end-to-end compromise of a best-practice-protected corporate-scale environment” and the “proliferation of high-impact biological weapons.” The list of possible catastrophes in Meta’s document is far from exhaustive, the company acknowledges, but includes those that Meta believes to be “the most urgent” and plausible to arise as a direct result of releasing a powerful AI system. Somewhat surprising is that, according to the document, Meta classifies system risk not based on any one empirical test but informed by the input of internal and external researchers who are subject to review by “senior-level decision-makers.” Why? Meta says that it doesn’t believe the science of evaluation is “sufficiently robust as to provide definitive quantitative metrics” for deciding a system’s riskiness. If Meta determines a system is high-risk, the company says it will limit access to the system internally and won’t release it until it implements mitigations to “reduce risk to moderate levels.” If, on the other hand, a system is deemed critical-risk, Meta says it will implement unspecified security protections to prevent the system from being exfiltrated and stop development until the system can be made less dangerous. Meta’s Frontier AI Framework, which the company says will evolve with the changing AI landscape, and which Meta earlier committed to publishing ahead of the France AI Action Summit this month, appears to be a response to criticism of the company’s “open” approach to system development. Meta has embraced a strategy of making its AI technology openly available — albeit not open source by the commonly understood definition — in contrast to companies like OpenAI that opt to gate their systems behind an API. Story Continues For Meta, the open release approach has proven to be a blessing and a curse. The company’s family of AI models, called Llama, has racked up hundreds of millions of downloads. But Llama has also reportedly been used by at least one U.S. adversary to develop a defense chatbot. In publishing its Frontier AI Framework, Meta may also be aiming to contrast its open AI strategy with ******** AI firm DeepSeek’s. DeepSeek also makes its systems openly available. But the company’s AI has few safeguards and can be easily steered to generate toxic and harmful outputs. “[W]e believe that by considering both benefits and risks in making decisions about how to develop and deploy advanced AI,” Meta writes in the document, “it is possible to deliver that technology to society in a way that preserves the benefits of that technology to society while also maintaining an appropriate level of risk.” TechCrunch has an AI-focused newsletter! Catawba Ave. Tran allegedly offered female clients add-on “massages” at Lee Nail Spa during which he made unsolicited ******* contact. Multiple victims have come forward with allegations against Tran, leading to his arrest. The incidents happened between Jan. 15 and Jan. 20. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to gather information from victims and witnesses. Tran remains in custody as the legal process unfolds. He was terminated from his job at Lee Nail Spa last week. Channel 9′s Jonathan Lowe spoke to clients who said the news is terrifying. It’s pretty terrifying; I mean, I go here every three weeks on the dot,” Maggie Champion said. “When I go in a nail salon I’m ready to be relaxed and enjoy my time there.” Court documents accuse Tran of unsolicited ******* conduct with the victims during the supposed messages and “holding her with one arm wrapped around her by force and against her will.” Brantley Avercampe said the salon is run very well. “I think it’s run really well, it’s organized, and it’s run good,” Avercampe said. “I’m sure they didn’t know about this cause they would never tolerate that from what I’ve seen just being inside.” Below is the full statement from Lee Nails: “We are saddened to inform our clients and community about a recent incident involving one of our staff members, Nhan. After receiving serious concerns about his conduct, we took immediate action by terminating his employment to maintain the values and standards that have guided our salon for over 20 years in Huntersville. Our salon has been a proud part of the Lake Norman area for two decades. We live here, raise our children here, and cherish being part of this vibrant community. We value our clients, want them to feel safe and respected, and strive to provide them with the best services as possible. This situation has come as a shock to us. Kakao also said it will use OpenAI technology for its products. The announcement was made by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Kakao CEO Chung Shina during a press conference in Seoul. Altman also said many Korean companies will be important contributors to the ecosystem of the U.S. Stargate data center project but added that he wants to keep partnership conversations confidential. Altman met with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won earlier on Tuesday and also plans to meet with executives from Samsung during his visit. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics produce high bandwidth memory chips used in AI processors. Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a private sector investment of up to $500 billion to fund AI infrastructure, noting OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle were planning a joint venture called Stargate. Asked whether OpenAI is looking at investing in and joining South Korea’s AI computing center project, Altman said the U.S. company is “actively considering” the move. Last month, South Korea’s government announced a plan to build a national AI computing center that would draw on investment from the public and private sectors worth up to 2 trillion won ($1.4 billion). Trump agrees to pause tariffs on Canada and Mexico but not on China Trump agrees to pause tariffs on Canada and Mexico but not on China Watch: ‘I’m getting angry and anti-American’ – Canadians decry tariff threat President Donald Trump has agreed to hold off imposing 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days, pulling the North American neighbours back from the brink of a potentially damaging trade war. After last-minute calls with Trump, ********* Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to reinforce his country’s border with the US to clamp down on migration and the flow of the deadly drug fentanyl. Earlier, Trump made a deal with ******** President Claudia Sheinbaum. She agreed to reinforce the northern border with troops. In return the US would limit the flow of guns into Mexico. But a US tariff of 10% on ******** imports is still due to go into effect from 00:01 EST (05:00 GMT) on Tuesday. Trump said he planned to speak on the phone to his ******** counterpart soon. He described the 10% import taxes as the “opening salvo” and said they could become “very, very substantial” if no agreement is made. Monday’s breakthrough with Canada and Mexico came as they prepared retaliatory tariffs on American goods. After two phone calls on Monday, Trump and Trudeau posted on social media that they had reached a temporary agreement on securing the border that would avoid tariffs for at least 30 days. Both leaders portrayed the agreement as a win. “As president, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of ALL Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome,” Trump wrote on his social media site Truth Social. Watch: US anthem booed at basketball and hockey games in Canada Trudeau said Canada was implementing a $1.3bn (£1bn) border plan that included nearly 10,000 frontline workers and more resources to halt the flow of fentanyl, a synthetic drug 50 times stronger than heroin, which Trump has cited as a major concern. The prime minister also said Canada would appoint a “fentanyl czar” and launch a joint strike force with the US to combat crime, fentanyl and money laundering. Much of the border security plan had already been announced by Canada in December. It includes enhanced co-ordination with US law enforcement, increased information sharing, limiting traffic at the border, and the deployment of drones and ****** Hawk helicopters for surveillance. The news came just hours after Trump paused a separate tariff on ******** goods in exchange for that country sending 10,000 National Guard troops to its border with the US. President Sheinbaum broke the news on X, writing she had had a “good conversation with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty” with her US counterpart. Trump described his phone conversation with the ******** leader as “very friendly”. In 2019, Mexico’s government agreed to send 15,000 soldiers to its northern frontier to avoid tariffs from the first Trump administration. Trump has framed tariffs as a tool for growing the US economy, protecting jobs and raising tax revenue. “Tariffs for us, nobody can compete with us because we’re the pot of gold,” he said on Monday afternoon. “But if we don’t keep winning and keep doing well, we won’t be the pot of gold.” But economists have warned ****-for-tat tariffs could raise prices for a wide range of products, including cars, lumber, steel, food and alcohol. Items had already been removed from some shelves, and stock markets lurched downwards on Monday before recovering slightly with the announcement that tariffs had been suspended. Reuters Andrew Furey, premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, acknowledged that the 30 days had brought some relief, but warned Canadians that a trade war still loomed. He told the BBC he looked forward to using “the calm ********* diplomatic approach to try to resolve any future tariffs”, but cautioned against further “chaotic” actions from the US president. “We’re left as Canadians feeling a bit confused by this attack from our closest friend, our largest trading partner, our ally, family,” Furey said. Getty Images Candace Laing, president and CEO of the ********* Chamber of Commerce, said that the “uncertainty” was leaving businesses and families “in the lurch”. The premier of Ontario – Canada’s most populous province, which makes up about 38% of the country’s GDP – welcomed the pause and said he would suspend plans for retaliatory measures. Premier Doug Ford wrote on X: “Make no mistake, Canada and Ontario continue to stare down the threat of tariffs. “Whether it’s tomorrow, in a month or a year from now… President Trump will continue to use the threat of tariffs to get what he wants.” On Sunday, Trump indicated the 27-nation European Union would be his next target for tariffs, without providing further details. The American president suggested that Britain, which left the EU in 2020, might be spared much duties. ‘They’re gone’: panic after men swept away by flood ‘They’re gone’: panic after men swept away by flood After watching two of his friends swept away in the dark by raging floodwaters, a distraught Jawad Al Hussein desperately tried to call triple zero for help. The calls were played to a court on Tuesday as the 43-year-old stands trial for manslaughter, haven driven his ute onto a flooded causeway with the two men standing on the back tray. Ghosn Ghosn, 30, and Bob Chahine, 32, both drowned in the incident, with their bodies found days later having been swept kilometres downstream. After he swam to safety and walked nearly an hour to find phone reception, Al Hussein can be heard pleading with emergency services for help. “Please help, please help. There’s two people dying,” he says. “We were crossing the creek, and the water pushed the car and the car’s gone with the two people in it.” The group of men had been attempting to cross the flooded causeway at Prestons Creek in Bevendale, in the NSW Southern Tablelands, about 8.30pm on October 31, 2022. Al Hussein tells the operator that neither of the two men can swim and he had lost sight of them in the darkened raging waters. “They went. They’re gone. We lost them,” he said. “I wish we could see them.” The 43-year-old father breaks down in tears when asked by the operator how he knows the men. “They’re my friends,” he sobs. After the trial began on Monday, Goulburn’s District Court was told the group had been attempting to reach a hobby farm owned by Al Hussein just minutes away. Al Hussein allegedly told the deceased men that their own vehicle wouldn’t make it across the flooded causeway and that they should ride on the back of his Mitsubishi Triton ute. According to prosecutors, the vehicle stalled almost as soon as it entered the “very fast-flowing and relatively deep water” and was quickly swept off the causeway. “He drove into those floodwaters knowing or believing that there was a significant risk that his vehicle would stall (and) that both passengers could not swim,” crown prosecutor Glen Porter told the court. Defence barrister James Lang argued Al Hussein’s action were an error of judgment and not manslaughter. “Everyone in their life makes errors of judgment,” he said. “This error of judgment in a very short space of time resulted in the very unfortunate loss of life of two men.” The trial continues. Ecuador president announces 27% tariff on ******** goods Ecuador president announces 27% tariff on ******** goods QUITO (Reuters) – Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa announced on Monday that his government will apply a 27% tariff on ******** goods in an effort to promote fair treatment for his country’s companies. In a post on X, Noboa said he favors more exchange of goods with other countries, including a potential free trade deal with Mexico, “but not when there is abuse.” Until there is such a deal, he added, the 27% duty will apply. Last year, Ecuador and Mexico broke off diplomatic relations after Noboa ordered a raid on the ******** embassy to arrest a former Ecuadorean vice president. The South American nation is set to hold a first-round general election this Sunday, in which Noboa is running to remain in office. Mexico’s economy ministry, which handles trade policy, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
