Shipping giant Maersk’s shares jump 10% on profit beat despite trade uncertainty
Shipping giant Maersk’s shares jump 10% on profit beat despite trade uncertainty
Maersk shares jumped more than 10% after the shipping giant posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter results on Thursday, putting shares on course for their best daily performance since 2016.
Earnings before interest, depreciation, taxes and amortization (EBITDA) rose 26% to $12.13 billion in the full-year stretch and came in at $3.6 billion in the fourth quarter, exceeding the $3 billion analyst forecast for the three-month ******* cited by Reuters.
“We saw growth across all three of our segments. We saw also a pretty strong price environment on the back of that growth and some shortages of capacity, so global trade continuing to be strong allowed us to deliver a very strong quarter,” Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Thursday.
“At a time of very high macroeconomic uncertainties, we were able to be sufficiently agile.”
This is a breaking news story and will be updated shortly.

Mandatory jail for Nazi salutes under new Australia laws
Mandatory jail for Nazi salutes under new Australia laws
Hate symbols and terror offences will be punishable with mandatory jail terms ranging from one to six years in Australia, after lawmakers passed a series of amendments to hate crime laws on Thursday.
The new laws were passed on Thursday amid a wave of high profile antisemitic attacks which have become a heated topic of debate in the country.
The amendments have been described by officials as the “toughest laws Australia has ever had against hate crimes”.
But critics say that the ruling Labor party is caving to opposition demands and going against its own policy of opposing mandatory jail sentences.
Under the amendments passed on Thursday, displaying hate symbols or performing a Nazi salute, is now punishable with at least one year in prison.
Other penalties include a minimum of three years for financing terrorism and six years for committing or planning terrorist acts.
Former Labor senator Kim Carr criticised the party for what he said was a “clear breach of the Labor party national platform”.
Labor opposes mandatory sentences on the grounds that such penalties do not reduce crime, undermine the courts’ independence and are often discriminatory in practice.
But opposition parties did not rush to welcome the new amendments either, accusing Labor of dragging its feet on the amendments.
“The parliament is not acting today because of the decisiveness of the Labor Party,” Liberal senator James Paterson told reporters in Canberra.
“The prime minister has been dragged kicking and screaming to finally introduce tough legislation that will ensure there are real penalties for this behaviour.”
Performing the Nazi salute and displaying Nazi hate symbols has been banned since January 2024 and carry up to one year in jail. The amendments on Thursday make the jail term mandatory.
“This is not about politics,” home affairs minister Tony Burke said on Wednesday night as the amendments were introduced to parliament. “This is about whether the *********** Parliament believes it’s acceptable to advocate threaten or commit violence against another person because of who they are, who they pray to or who they love.”
There has been several attacks on Jewish targets in Australia in recent months.
Last week authorities in Sydney found a caravan containing explosives and an antisemitic note. The discovery came just a week after a childcare centre near a Jewish school and synagogue in Sydney was set on fire and antisemitic graffiti was seen on its wall.
In December, a synagogue in Melbourne was set alight with worshippers inside. No one was seriously hurt in the incident, but it sent shockwaves throughout the country.

Davina McCall ‘angry’ over brain tumour taking ‘control’ of her life

In an emotional interview, McCall said she wrote letters to all of her children in case she did not pull through her surgery
TV Presenter Davina McCall has spoken publicly for the first time about the “anger” she felt over the benign brain tumour that she was diagnosed with last year, which she said had “taken control of me”.
The 57-year-old former Big Brother host revealed in November that a colloid cyst had been found during a health check-up as part of her menopause advocacy work.
Speaking on her podcast Begin Again, a tearful McCall recalled how a scan had revealed she had a rare type of tumour that “very, very rarely” can “cause sudden death”.
She had surgery, spending time in intensive care, before recovering at home.
McCall also said she wanted to challenge the assumption many people have that benign brain tumours are not life threatening, as they can still be life-threatening.
“I felt like this thing had taken control of me and I was so angry about that,” she told businessman and fellow podcaster Steve Bartlett in the latest episode.
“I couldn’t let it go, I was like, ‘How dare you control my daily life like this and make me feel every day like I’m in danger?'”
Non-cancerous brain tumours are more common in people over the age of 50, and symptoms can include headaches, vision problems and drowsiness, according to the NHS website.
Some can be difficult to remove without damaging surrounding tissue. And Chemotherapy or radiotherapy can also be used if the surgery is not successful.
McCall said she named her tumour Jeffrey, because she doesn’t have any friends of that name, and even threw it a birthday party.
She recovered at home with the help of her partner, celebrity hairdresser Michael Douglas.
She went on to say that while she had never wanted any sympathy herself, she now has a “newfound enormous sympathy for people who have benign brain tumours”.
“I have had so many people say to me: ‘Well, at least it was benign.’ And you think: ‘You have no idea that benign brain tumours can still kill you.’
“It’s just, you don’t know when it’s going to happen,” she added. “It could happen tomorrow, it could happen in years’ time. It’s different to *******, but it is also awful. A benign does not mean fine.”
‘Pretty terrifying’
“Living with that uncertainty is pretty terrifying,” she continued.
She said she “did not want to live with the stress of thinking any minute… I could be taken out by something.”
A longtime advocate of women’s health, McCall was given given a special recognition award at the National Television Awards last year after having been awarded an MBE in 2023 for services to broadcasting.
Nowadays the host of the ITV dating show My Mum, Your Dad, McCall said she had to get her will in order following her diagnosis and even created a WhatsApp group to ensure her family would “all find a way through if I didn’t make it”.
She added: “I did go and address my will and make sure that was airtight. I talked to Michael about my wishes. I wrote letters of wishes to all the children and put those in my will.”
While the experience has “not changed me forever”, she noted: “But I’ve learned things about myself that I would never have learned without this operation.”
She thinks that in the near future she will view the experience as “one of the greatest blessings of my life”.
The star, who recently shocked viewers by appearing in a blonde wig on the Masked Singer, urged podcast listeners to “write your bucket list now”.

Hagia Sophia’s Digital Twin: Safeguarding a Legacy Against Disaster
Hagia Sophia’s Digital Twin: Safeguarding a Legacy Against Disaster
Nearly every inch of the unique masterpiece has been scanned Turkish officials say. Credit: David Spender, CC2/Wikipedia
Turkey has created a digital twin of Hagia Sophia, one of the world’s most significant landmarks, to rebuild it if it gets destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake or fire.
Nearly every inch of the unique masterpiece has been scanned, ensuring that even if it collapses in a future earthquake, it can be faithfully rebuilt, Daily Sabah reported recently.
Hagia Sophia remains the symbolic center of the Greek Orthodox faith even almost six centuries after its fall to the Ottomans and its conversion to a mosque.
From 537 to 1453, the “Great Church,” as the Byzantines called it, was the eastern heart of Christianity.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, Hagia Sophia draws millions of visitors annually, both locals and tourists alike. However, the structure has suffered gradual wear and tear over time due to visitor traffic and environmental factors.
A video from 2022 shows fragments falling on visitors from the dome of the Hagia Sophia.
In June 2022, a number of tiles of the ancient marble floors in Hagia Sophia were damaged by heavy machines used to clean the site.
The Turkish Association of Art Historians then stated, in April 2022, that the historic Imperial Gate of the Hagia Sophia had been badly damaged. The group posted a picture clearly depicting the damage to the oak wood of the fifteen-century-old gate.
Extensive restoration project
The latest effort marks the third most extensive restoration project in Hagia Sophia’s history.
Initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s General Directorate of Foundations in 2022, the “Comprehensive Project of Hagia Sophia” meticulously scanned almost every square centimeter of the structure to create its digital replica, which has been archived for future generations.
“The projects undertaken so far for Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque certainly exist, but what we mean by the Comprehensive Project is a project in which all the elements of the structure have been individually drawn, including their relationship with other buildings around the structure,” explained Şengül Koncagül, head of the Artifacts and Construction Works Department at the General Directorate of Foundations, in an interview with TRT News.
“It’s a project where everything is together. Using the latest scanning techniques, we created a digital twin. This project ensures that if there is any deterioration or if the structure collapses due to an earthquake, fire or disaster, a project is in place to reconstruct it identically.”
Earthquake fears for Istanbul and Hagia Sophia
Earthquake and tsunami fever has gripped Istanbul since the disaster of 2023 in southern Turkey, as residents in Europe’s most populous city fear they could face similar devastation.
The city lies near the North Anatolia faultline, a geological danger that has seen Istanbul hit by at least 34 strong earthquakes over the last 2,000 years.
Authorities in Istanbul have placed tsunami warnings in several parts of the city and have been advising people on how best to protect themselves if the worst comes to the worst.
Memories are still fresh from the devasting 7.6 earthquake in 1999 when between 17,127 and 18,373 people died as a result.
“An earthquake can occur in Istanbul at any moment,” said Efthymios Lekkas, professor of Geology and Natural Disasters, speaking to ERT recently, citing the tsunami warning signs that have been posted in the city.
The Greek scientist who is the top seismologist in the country, noted, that only a third of the buildings are not particularly vulnerable in the city of 20 million inhabitants.
“We don’t know when the big tremor will come, maybe in five years” he noted and explained, “we are dealing with a huge faultline, the Anatolian fault, which has a length of about 1,500 kilometers from the Caspian to the Aegean, it is divided into 13 big pieces, 12 pieces have broken and given big earthquakes.

Laos waives AFP assistance in Aussie methanol deaths
Laos waives AFP assistance in Aussie methanol deaths
The Laotian government has not taken up an offer from the *********** Federal Police to help investigate the deaths of two Melbourne teenagers from methanol poisoning.
Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones, both 19, died after consuming tainted alcohol in the tourist town of Vang Vieng last year.
Defence Minister Richard Marles told federal parliament on Thursday that he was sad to report the response from authorities in Laos.
“I would want to assure the families of Bianca and Holly that we remain in contact with the Laos authorities and that the offer of assistance is consistently being offered and raised,” he said.
Ms Bowles died in a Bangkok hospital on November 22, a day after Ms Jones died in another hospital in the Thai capital.
The teenagers did not leave their dorm at the Nana Backpacker Hostel 24 hours after going to Jaidee Bar and reported feeling sick on November 13, before being rushed to hospitals.
Inquiring about progress in the case, independent MP Zoe Daniel told parliament the families were desperate for information about the investigation and whether anyone would be held responsible to avoid a repeat of the poisoning.
In the wake of six foreign nationals dying including an American man, two Danish women and a British woman, the Laotian government vowed to “bring the perpetrators to justice in accordance with the law”.
At least eight people, believed to be hotel staff and management, were detained, but officials in Laos have released almost no details in the mass poisoning case since November.
“We will continue to press Laos to pursue this investigation as we will continue to offer the assistance of the *********** government through the AFP,” Mr Marles said.
“What happened to Holly and Bianca struck at the heart of the nation.”
The minister said Foreign Minister Penny Wong had also advocated on the families’ behalf.

Protesters set fire to home of Sheikh Hasina’s father
Protesters set fire to home of Sheikh Hasina’s father

Protesters set fire to Sheikh Hasina’s house on Wednesday evening
Protesters in Bangladesh have vandalised and set fire to the former family home of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, as well as those of other members of her party.
The unrest was sparked by news that Hasina would address the country via social media from India, where she has been in exile since student-led protests ousted her last year.
The 77-year-old Hasina, who was in charge of Bangladesh for 20 years, was seen as an autocrat whose government ruthlessly clamped down on dissent.
On Wednesday evening, an excavator smashed down the house of Hasina’s late father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is also Bangladesh’s founding president. The structure had been repurposed into a museum.
Hasina’s father is widely viewed as an independence hero, but anger at his daughter has tarnished his legacy among Hasina’s critics.
In a Facebook livestream, Hasina condemned the attack and demanded “justice”.
“They can demolish a building, but they can’t erase history,” she said.
Hasina, once hailed as a pro-democracy icon, has seen her reputation sour after taking office. She has been accused of rigging elections and jailing her critics, and her administration was widely seen as corrupt.
She faces arrest warrants for cracking down on the student-led protests last year, which saw hundreds of people killed.
While Hasina fled to India last August, anger has not dissipated against her and her Awami League partymates.

The late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founding president, was widely viewed as a hero, but has become a target for critics of his daughter Sheikh Hasina
On Wednesday, protesters also vandalised and torched the houses and businesses of senior Awami League leaders. There have been calls on social media to rid the country of “pilgrimage sites of fascism”.
Police told the BBC’s Bengali service that around 700 protesters showed up at the residence on Wednesday night, and dozens of police officers were deployed.
Since Hasina’s ouster, a caretaker government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has kept the country running.
But it has struggled to quell lingering unrest. Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets in recent months, demanding Hasina to be prosecuted for her deadly crackdown on student protesters.
While Yunus’ government tries to get Hasina extradited from India, it is also dealing with a looming economic crisis – Yunus has accused Hasina of faking Bangladesh’s economic growth and laundering billions of dollars during her rule.
Yunus has pledged to hold elections in late 2025 or early 2026.

Rocket Lab Delays IoT Satellite Launch to Ensure Safe Trajectory in Space
Rocket Lab Delays IoT Satellite Launch to Ensure Safe Trajectory in Space
Rocket Lab has delayed the launch of its “IOT 4 You and Me” mission to prevent any potential collision with existing satellites and the International Space Station. The mission, set to deploy five Internet of Things (IoT) satellites was put on hold to ensure a safe trajectory for the rocket. A revised launch schedule is yet to be confirmed. The Electron rocket, measuring 18 meters in height, was due to lift off from New Zealand. The company stated that careful monitoring of orbital traffic is being conducted before proceeding with the launch. The decision aligns with growing efforts to mitigate space debris and prevent congestion in low Earth orbit.
Mission Status and Broadcast Details
According to reports, Rocket Lab has assured that the mission will be streamed live on its website approximately 30 minutes before liftoff. This mission marks Rocket Lab’s first launch of 2025 and is the fourth of five launches planned for Kinéis’ satellite network. Once complete, the constellation will consist of 25 nanosatellites aimed at global connectivity for IoT applications.
Purpose of the Satellite Deployment
The satellite network is described as an advanced tool for tracking, monitoring and alerting users in real-time. These functions are designed to support industries reliant on remote data collection and decision-making. The satellites are expected to be placed in a 646-kilometre circular orbit approximately 66.5 minutes after launch. The system’s capability is intended to optimise logistical operations while reducing risks for various sectors.
Previous Launches and Future Plans
Rocket Lab successfully launched 16 missions in 2024, consisting of 14 orbital flights with the Electron rocket and two suborbital hypersonic test flights using the HASTE variant. The company remains committed to expanding its launch operations while addressing space traffic concerns to enhance mission safety and sustainability in orbit.

Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 Launch Timeline Leaked; Said to Get 5,100mAh Battery, Wireless Charging
Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 Launch Timeline Leaked; Said to Get 5,100mAh Battery, Wireless Charging
Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 has been the subject of numerous rumours recently. Several key features of the alleged clamshell foldable smartphone have surfaced online. A new leak now hints at its potential launch timeline while also revealing expected specifications, including details about its battery and charging capabilities. The phone is expected to succeed the Xiaomi Mix Flip, which was launched in China in July 2024, with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.
Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 Features, Launch Timeline (Expected)
The Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 will likely house a dual-cell 5,100mAh battery, according to a Weibo post by tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from ********). The tipster added that the handset will support 50W wireless charging. The smartphone is tipped to meet the IPX8 rating for water resistance.
Xiaomi is expected to improve the crease of the Mix Flip 2 over that of the first-generation foldable. The design of the purported handset will likely remain the same apart from the shape of the outer screen. The company may also include certain customisation options aimed at women, the tipster added.
In the comments section of the post, the tipster in response to another Weibo user, suggested that the Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 is expected to be unveiled in China in the second quarter (Q2) of this year, that is between April and June. A few other users commented that the launch will take place in May. The tipster, however, did not suggest a timeline more specific than Q2 2025.
Previous leaks by the same tipster suggested that the Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 will likely be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC. The handset could sport a 6.85-inch LTPO OLED inner display with a 1.5K resolution. For optics, it could get a 50-megapixel 1/1.5-inch primary sensor and a 50-megapixel 1/2.76-inch ultra-wide shooter. The phone is expected to support NFC and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Panama Canal Authority denies US claims over free ship passages
Panama Canal Authority denies US claims over free ship passages
Reuters
Panama has denied making changes to allow US government vessels to transit the Panama Canal for free, following White House claims it had agreed to such a move.
The State Department said in a statement on X that its government vessels “can now transit the Panama Canal without charge fees, saving the US government millions of dollars a year”.
Responding to the comments, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said it was “empowered to set tolls and other fees for transiting the canal,” adding that it had “not made any adjustments to them”.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced his desire to retake control of the waterway, which is key to global trade.
The 51-mile (82km) Panama Canal cuts across the Central American nation and is the main link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has been on a visit to Latin American countries this week, demanded that Panama make “immediate changes” to what he calls the “influence and control” of China over the canal.
America’s top diplomat said Panama had to act or the US would take necessary measures to protect its rights under a treaty between the two countries.
During a visit to the country, Rubio met Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino, as well as the canal’s administrator, Ricaurte Vásquez Morales.
The ACP said after his visit that it had conveyed its intention to work with the US navy to optimise transit priority for its vessels through the canal.
This commitment for dialogue with Washington remained, it said in a separate statement on Wednesday.
US vessels make up a significant proportion of traffic in the canal. In 2024, 52% of transits through the waterway had ports of origin or destination in the United States, according to the canal’s authorities.
Up to 14,000 ships use the canal each year to avoid a lengthy and costly trip around the tip of South America.
In his inaugural speech, President Trump said he planned to “take back” the canal, alleging that China was operating it and Panama had “broken” a promise to remain neutral.
The plan was strongly rejected by Mulino, who said the key trade route “is and will remain” in the country’s hands.
He also rejected Trump’s allegations about China’s influence, saying there is “no presence of any nation in the world that interferes with our administration”.
The US built the canal in the early 20th Century but, after years of protest, President Jimmy Carter signed a treaty with Panama in 1977 to gradually hand back control of the waterway, which Trump has branded “a big mistake”.

The company announced the rollout of the feature on Wednesday and highlighted that anyone across the world can access the AI platform and start using the AI firm’s native search engine-powered feature to ask queries. Notably, the company first released the feature in November 2024 to paid subscribers. Later in December 2024, it was rolled out to the users on the free tier as well.
ChatGPT Search Rolling Out to Everyone
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the official handle of OpenAI announced the expansion of the search feature. With this, anyone visiting the ChatGPT website can ask the chatbot real-time queries that require sourcing the information from the web.
Gadgets 360 staff members were able to see the feature on the Android app as well. However, it appears to not have been rolled out to the iOS app at the time of writing this. It might be rolled out in the coming days.
For those without an OpenAI account, the feature will be powered by the GPT-4o AI model. On the ChatGPT interface, users will see a globe icon placed next to the ‘Attach file’ icon in the text field. Tapping the globe icon will manually trigger the web search mode, and the chatbot will only use information found on the web to answer user responses.
The feature also displays the source of the information in two ways. After every sentence, wherever the information was used, a clickable icon highlights the particular source. The list of sources, also clickable, is also mentioned at the bottom of the response. OpenAI has not announced any rate limits for the ChatGPT Search feature for unregistered users. Those on the free tier do not have a rate limit for the feature.
Separately, a recent report claimed that the feature is vulnerable to prompt injection techniques. It was found that if a website uses hidden text to send misinformation, the AI tool picks them up and starts generating biased output. It is unclear when OpenAI has fixed the issue.

Young ‘happy and relieved’ to wrap Chrome Hearts album
Young ‘happy and relieved’ to wrap Chrome Hearts album
Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts have finished recording their debut album.
The 79-year-old singer-songwriter and his band have have been working on their first collection together with producers Lou Adler and John Hanlon at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studio, and he’s given fans a promising update.
Writing on his own ‘Neil Young Archives’ blog, he said: “It is in mastering now to make the vinyl, CD and digital copies.
“I am very happy and relieved to have [this] done in the short time it took.
“The album art has been completed and handed in with Jenice Heo. I am working on the lyric sheets now, hoping to hand-write the words and get them in, in time…”
The ‘Heart of Gold’ musician is hoping to drop the record in April, even if he admitted that could be an ambitious timeline.
“It is a happy feeling I have today, knowing I have made an album I think people will enjoy,” he said.
“I hope it’s out in April. That would be pretty fast.”
He described playing with the Chrome Hearts as “a joy” as they worked on the music in Malibu a couple of months after writing the tunes.
“I wrote these songs in November and December. They feel free to me and I am very happy to have this all ready for you,” Young said.
“It won’t be long now and it will be great to have new songs to play on the road this summer in Europe, the USA and Canada. We are looking forward to that.”
Young – whose ‘lost’ album Oceanside Countryside, recorded in 1977, will be released on February 14 – recently made a U-turn after pulling out of June’s Glastonbury Festival over the BBC’s involvement.
In a statement posted on his website, he said: “Due to an error in the information received, I had decided not to play the Glastonbury Festival, which I have always loved.
“Happily, the festival is now back on our itinerary and we look forward to playing. Hope to see you there.”
It is not clear whether Young’s decision will mean that his set will be televised after he only allowed the BBC to screen a short portion of his two-hour headline set when he last played at the festival in 2009.
He previously suggested that he had turned down the chance to perform at the world-famous festival as he bemoaned how the event had fallen “under corporate control”.

OnePlus 13 Mini Tipped to Come With 50-Megapixel Bar-Shaped Dual Camera Setup
OnePlus 13 Mini Tipped to Come With 50-Megapixel Bar-Shaped Dual Camera Setup
OnePlus 13 Mini is rumoured to be in development as a small-screen model sporting similar internals as the OnePlus 13. Now, a tipster has suggested that the purported handset will be equipped with a bar-shaped rear camera module, unlike its flagship counterpart which has a circular camera unit. It is said to have a 50-megapixel primary sensor. Upon launch, the purported OnePlus 13 Mini is speculated to join the OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R.
OnePlus 13 Mini Camera Details Leak
In a post on the ******** social media platform Weibo, tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from ********) shared details about the purported OnePlus 13 Mini’s camera unit. It is said to be equipped with a dual rear camera setup, comprising a 50-megapixel primary sensor and a 50-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x vertical zoom. This rumour contradicts previous claims made by the same tipster who suggested the inclusion of a rear camera setup.
The change in the camera unit’s design is in line with OnePlus confirming that it will unveil several smartphones later this year with a different design. As per OnePlus industrial designer Hao Ran, the brand would launch a new OnePlus design language in 2025 and move to a new design centre.
OnePlus 13 Mini Specifications (Expected)
Past reports indicate that the purported OnePlus 13 Mini will sport a 6.31-inch 1.5K LTPO OLED flat display with slim and uniform bezels. It is likely to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, housed in a glass body with a metal middle frame. It is expected to feature a short-focus in-screen fingerprint sensor for security.
For optics, the phone may sport a dual or triple camera unit, which is speculated to include a 50-megapixel camera with Sony IMX906 sensor, a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with either 2x or 3x optical zoom, and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera.
While the OnePlus 13 Mini moniker is likely, reports suggest it could also adopt the OnePlus 13T name.

See Where Trump Is Expanding Immigrant Detention at Guantánamo
See Where Trump Is Expanding Immigrant Detention at Guantánamo

The New York Times
Around 150 tents to house migrant detainees and to support detention operations have been set up at the U.S. Navy base at Guantánamo Bay, according to satellite images taken over the area on Tuesday and Wednesday. President Trump has ordered his administration to prepare to house as many as 30,000 migrants at the base.
The majority of migrants sent to the area will most likely be housed on the western side of the bay, about seven miles from the prison for terrorism suspects, images and documents analyzed by The New York Times show.
But on Wednesday, the administration said the first 10 migrant detainees to be flown to Guantánamo were being held in the prison complex, shown below in an image from 2021. It was unclear how many others might be detained there in the future.

On the western side, construction was visible in satellite imagery captured this week around the existing Migrant Operations Center, where the United States has long held migrants picked up at sea. The area could be designed to hold up to 13,000 migrants and 5,000 support personnel during emergencies, according to a budget proposal from 2016 for upgrades at the location.

Recent satellite images also captured the speed of the current surge in activity and capacity there. Clearing operations started in the second half of January. On Jan. 30, the Navy ship U.S.S. St. Louis arrived, bringing troops to help get the tent city ready.
The next day, an image showed that more than two dozen green military tents to support detention operations had been erected. By Wednesday, that number had increased to more than 80. At that point, around 70 tents for migrants were also visible.

The Pentagon shared several images online of tents being set up at the site.
The Times obtained a separate document from 2017 showing design plans for migrant housing expansion at the site with a map and details about capacity and setup. Those plans showed room for about 11,000 migrants.
The tent positions seen on satellite images this week appear to be closely following those design plans. Support infrastructure, labeled on the plans as dining facilities and camp headquarters, could also be seen being prepared on concrete pads that were constructed in 2019.
Plans to expand migrant housing at Guantánamo Bay
The diagram below shows plans that were submitted to the Pentagon in 2017 for a “mass migration complex” in the leeward side of the naval station.
Dining and other facilities
The first new tents to house migrants have been set up in the L1 and L6 areas, as described in the plans, which could house more than 2,000 people if filled to capacity. Clearing and other activities have also been seen in the area marked L5.
Just 37 people were held at the Migrant Operations Center from 2020 to 2023. As of February 2024, four migrants were being held there, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The government has not previously flown migrants from within the United States to the site.
