1992 shooting of IRA men was ‘unjustified’ says inquest
1992 shooting of IRA men was ‘unjustified’ says inquest
An inquest has ruled the use of lethal force by SAS soldiers was unjustified when they opened fire killing four IRA men in an ambush at Clonoe in County Tyrone.
Kevin Barry O’Donnell, 21, Sean O’Farrell, 23, Peter Clancy, 19, and Daniel Vincent, 20, died in February 1992, minutes after they had carried out a gun attack on Coalisland police station.
The soldiers opened fire as the men arrived at St Patrick’s Church car park in a hijacked lorry which had a heavy machine gun welded to its tailgate.
Security forces had intelligence the car park would be used and 12 soldiers were in position behind a hedgerow.
They opened fire without warning when the lorry drove in – firing more than 500 rounds.

Faletau back for Wales after missing 13 straight losses
Faletau back for Wales after missing 13 straight losses
Wales rugby great Taulupe Faletau will reappear for the floundering national team for the first time since they last won a Test.
Faletau was picked at No. 8 on Thursday against Italy in Rome in the Six Nations on Saturday.
He played his 104th and last cap for Wales in October 2023, when they beat Georgia 43-19 in Nantes, France, to clean sweep their Rugby World Cup pool.
But Faletau broke his arm in the game and he played only 29 minutes of club rugby in the next 14 months to last December.
A knee issue for the 34-year-old then made him withdraw from Wales’ Six Nations opener in Paris last weekend, when they lost to France 43-0.
While he’s been absent, Wales have lost every Test, a record 13 in a row.
He returns to a team with only 11 survivors of the 23 who played Georgia 16 months ago.
Faletua replaces Aaron Wainwright, who suffered a deep cut to his face in the defeat to France.
Scarlets centre Eddie James handed his first ever start as he comes into the team in place of Owen Watkins, who suffered a suspected knee ligament tear against France and could be out for the rest of the season.
James, who has won three caps off the bench, will partner with Nick Tompkins in the midfield.
Wales team:
15-Liam Williams, 14-Tom Rogers, 13-Nick Tompkins, 12-Eddie James, 11-Josh Adams, 10-Ben Thomas, 9-Tomos Williams, 8-Taulupe Faletau, 7-Jac Morgan (captain), 6-James Botham, 5-Dafydd Jenkins, 4-Will Rowlands, 3-Henry Thomas, 2-Evan Lloyd, 1-Gareth Thomas
Replacements: 16-Elliot Dee, 17-Nicky Smith-18-Keiron Assiratti, 19-Freddie Thomas, 20-Aaron Wainwright, 21-Rhodri Williams, 22-Dan Edwards, 23-Blair Murray.

Bill Gates’ autobiography, Source Code, was published today, and the Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist has hit the interview circuit. The BBC has a new interview with Gates, during which he reveals some new numbers on his charitable foundation, his main focus in the decades since stepping down from Microsoft in 2008. “I’ve given over $100 billion,” Gates says, “but I still have more to give.”
Gates credits his mother Mary with his philanthropic focus, because alongside his early successes she regularly told him that “with wealth came the responsibility to give it away.” Mary also constantly tried to sand off Gates’ less sociable side: She was once so fed-up with the mess in his room that she began confiscating any clothing she found on the floor, and charging the young entrepreneur 25 cents to get it back. The young Bill Gates’ response? “I started wearing fewer clothes.” But despite his rebellions, Gates now thinks “the crucible of my ambition was warmed through that relationship.”
Gates estimates that he’s put around $60 billion into The Gates Foundation, which since 2006 has also received enormous contributions from Warren Buffett, and even such an awesome sum has made little discernible difference to his life.
“I made no personal sacrifice,” says Gates. “I didn’t order less hamburgers or less movies.” Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index estimates Gates’ total fortune to be in the region of $160 billion, the vast majority of which will be donated, with a small amount reserved for Gates’ three children: “In absolute, they’ll do well, in percentage terms it’s not a gigantic number.”
In his new memoir Gates for the first time says that, if he was growing up today, he reckons he’d be diagnosed on the autism spectrum. The book mentions his ability to hyperfocus, his obsessive behaviours, his poor social skills, and his sister Kristi recalls “he was not a normal kid… he would sit in his room and chew pencils down to the lead.”
While Gates is happy to admit that might be the case, he doesn’t see the point in seeking a formal diagnosis at this stage in his life. “The positive characteristics for my career have been more beneficial than the deficits have been a problem for me.”
Getting back to the present day, Gates is asked about how his fellow tech billionaires have been cosying up to President Donald Trump: Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg are among those to have donated to and, in some cases, get actively involved with the new administration. “You can be cynical” about this, says Gates, but says he had a three-hour dinner meeting with Trump in December “because he’s making decisions about global health and how we help poor countries, which is a big focus of mine now.”
Asked about the current struggle to distinguish between truth and junk information online, most recently brought into focus by Meta’s decision to abandon fact-checking, Gates says he’s not “that impressed” by what’s going on but also doesn’t have the answers. “I don’t personally know how you draw that line, but I’m worried that we’re not handling that as well as we should.”
What about someone like Robert F. Kennedy Junior becoming US health secretary, with his wacky ideas about vaccines? A straight answer: “He’s misleading people.”
Gates reckons part of the problem is the type of online networks we’ve constructed. “Social networking, even more than video gaming, can absorb your time and make you worry about other people approving you,” says Gates. He also thinks Australia’s new ban on social media for teens under the age of 16 is “a smart thing.”
The BBC interview The Making of Bill Gates is available on iPlayer in the ***, and sees Gates returning to some of his early Seattle haunts to reminisce about his childhood. Source Code: My Beginnings is available now.

‘Possible sinkhole’ closes part of Highway 1 as atmospheric river storm hits Central Coast
‘Possible sinkhole’ closes part of Highway 1 as atmospheric river storm hits Central Coast
Update, 9:40 p.m.:
Highway 1 has reopened in both directions after briefly closing due to a possible sinkhole Tuesday night, Caltrans said.
The agency said it will “continue to monitor conditions on the roadway with repairs to be scheduled.”
Original story:
A “possible sinkhole” closed part of Highway 1 in Santa Barbara County as an atmospheric river storm hit the Central Coast on Tuesday evening.
According to a Caltrans post on X, the highway was closed from Highway 101 north of Gaviota to Highway 246 near Lompoc.
The incident began around 4:40 p.m. with a report that the bridge on Highway 1 just south of Jalama Road was “giving way” on the southbound side, according to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic incident report page.
Soon after, first responding agencies began the process of closing the road.
As of 8 p.m., Caltrans was inspecting the roadway to assess the damage.
There was no estimated time for re-opening.
The closure comes as an atmospheric river storm dropped heavy rain across much of the Central Coast on Tuesday evening.
Some parts of Santa Barbara County were expected to get as much as 3 inches of rain during the storm, though most of the area would see between 0.75 and 1.5 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
San Luis Obispo County, meanwhile, was under a flood advisory due to heavy rainfall.

WA Police investigating if drugs found where Adam Hunter died linked to his death
WA Police investigating if drugs found where Adam Hunter died linked to his death
Police are yet to determine the cause of Adam Hunter’s death but have confirmed the drugs found at the property where he died will be central to their investigation.
WA Police South West District Superintendent Paul van Noort also revealed one of his officers had seen the former West Coast AFL premiership player training with his local footy club hours before he was found dead where he seemed “fine”.
Paramedics were unable to revive the 43-year-old after they were called to a home in the Bunbury suburb of Withers, 175km south of Perth, early on Wednesday morning.
Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia have been seized by police with investigators awaiting the results of a toxicology report to determine if drugs played a role in the death.
Supt. Van Noort stressed police had ruled out Hunter had taken his own life and were treating the death as a non-suspicious tragedy.
He said there were “items of interest” being examined and they were “looking to see if they were linked to the cause of death”.
“It’s something we are looking at (the death being drug-related) due to what we found at the location,” he said.
“Everything is up in the air and we are looking at everything with an open mind. They are just tragic circumstances, there is nothing suspicious.”
Hunter, who kicked the winning goal for the Eagles against the Swans in the 2006 AFL grand final, had been training with the South Bunbury club on Tuesday night.
“One of the officers saw him at footy training and he was fine,” Supt Van Noort said.
“He was an active member of the club and an icon as well.”
The father-of-one was fined in court for possessing ******** in 2014 and was facing domestic violence charges in 2021 before that case was dropped.
Hunter had been accused breaking into his partner’s Perth home before assaulting her and preventing her from leaving.

He was facing charges of aggravated home burglary, aggravated common assault and deprivation of liberty.
The case was discontinued after prosecutors told the court there was “no longer reasonable prospects of conviction”.
Supt. Van Noort said Hunter had had no interactions with his officers in the past 12 to 18 months and there was “nothing out of the ordinary about his behaviour”.
The Eagles wore ****** armbands at training on Wednesday and were addressed by Head of Football John Worsfold who coached all but 10 of Hunter’s 151 AFL games.
“I was lucky enough to coach ‘Hunts’ for a long time and he was just one of those players who put in 100 per cent into everything he did at the club,” he said on Wednesday.
“All he wanted to do was play footy with his mates and share success with them. I know a lot of his teammates are reflecting on what he brought to them as a group and as footballers.
“Out of all my time in footy, which is a long time now, he’s probably the player that loved the game more than any player I’ve ever seen.”
In a frank interview in 2018, Hunter revealed how he had struggled to adjust to life after the AFL when his career was cut short in 2009 due to a chronic shoulder injury.
“I got to a point where I realised I was going down a pathway I didn’t want to be going down and needed to change my lifestyle choices,” he told The West ***********.
“You’ve got to make mistakes to improve, and fail to succeed, and I had to learn from what I was doing and get better. Football can give you everything but it can also take everything away from you.”
“It was hard to accept and took me several years to get over the frustration of not being still out there.
“It left a massive hole, and trying to chase that feeling again is very hard to replicate. It took a bit of time to recognise that’s what I was feeling because football was all I knew. I hadn’t experienced life away from it and I didn’t have much direction.”

Former West Coast chair Dalton Gooding says the AFL industry “absolutely needs to do more for our players” in the wake of the tragic death of Adam Hunter.
Hunter, a 2006 premiership hero at the Eagles, died in the South West this week aged only 43.
Police confirmed on Wednesday they attended a home in the suburb of Withers, near Bunbury, at about 12.20am on Wednesday morning, where he was found unresponsive.
Ambulance crews were called to the scene and immediately began first aid, but Hunter could not be revived and was declared deceased at the scene.
Bunbury detectives also seized an amount of methamphetamine and paraphernalia from the scene and they’re speaking to a number of witnesses.
Gooding, who was the chair of the club from 2003 to 2007, said there needed to be more help for former AFL players such as Hunter to transition into life outside of football.
“When they lose relevance – not being a football star anymore – it is very difficult for them to reintegrate back into life because a lot of them haven’t studied and they don’t have any work-life skills,” Gooding told The Herald Sun.
“They really do struggle for a while. There are very few jobs in the world where you earn most of your money in your early 20s.
“Most people increase their income earning capacity over the ******* of their working life, but that doesn’t happen in football and they get used to a certain lifestyle and then the financial cliff comes when they finish.
“I’ve got to put a caveat on it because I don’t really know what the AFL Players’ Association does these days – but it’s always been my bugbear that clubs don’t have their own endowment fund to help their past players.”
Gooding said he and former chief executive Trevor Nisbett still speak about the off-field troubles that plagued the club during that era.
“But what you’ve got to appreciate is that back in 2004, 2005 and 2006, the drug ice (crystal methamphetamine) was completely unfamiliar to all of us — and also at football clubs, what goes on amongst players is kept very tight, so it takes a while for that sort of behaviour and information to filter up to boards,” he said.
“And certainly, when we found out that there was a problem we moved very quickly — and put a lot of time into turning the culture around.
“But it is something that can infiltrate a club quite quickly without you really knowing it.”
Gooding said he wanted to create a club-controlled “endowment system” to help footballers post-retirement but was unsuccessful.
““Back in my time at the Eagles, I was very keen to get a club endowment system going to help players in their post football life,” he said.
“But it’s very difficult to do that when you have player agents acting for players. I thought a good way would have been to have some sort of compulsory deduction from their earnings into an endowment fund run by the clubs – a bit like compulsory superannuation, which really set Australia up.
“But the player agents weren’t really supportive of that.”
Gooding praised Hunter — who played 151 games for the Eagles — as an “underrated” player.
“He hadn’t been around the club, but that 2006 premiership group was still very strong – and obviously they are all hurting bigtime. It’s very, very sad,” he said.
“Adam was a really good player, a very much underrated player. He was as tough as nails and quite often when we were struggling in a game, John Worsfold would move him forward and he’d kick a couple of goals and just get us going – he was a real swingman – and very, very revered within the group and by the supporters.”

Scientists Simulated Bennu Crashing to Earth in September 2182. It’s Not Pretty.
Scientists Simulated Bennu Crashing to Earth in September 2182. It’s Not Pretty.
Simulations of a potential impact by a hill-sized space rock event next century have revealed the rough ride humanity would be in for, hinting at what it’d take for us to survive such a catastrophe.
It’s been a long, long time since Earth has been smacked by a large asteroid, but that doesn’t mean we’re in the clear. Space is teeming with rocks, and many of those are blithely zipping around on trajectories that could bring them into violent contact with our planet.
One of those is asteroid Bennu, the recent lucky target of an asteroid sample collection mission. In a mere 157 years – September of 2182 CE, to be precise – it has a chance of colliding with Earth.
That chance is slim, for sure, just 1 in 2,700, or 0.04 percent. But that’s not zero.
In order to be prepared for the worst, climate scientists in South Korea have modeled what would happen if such a collision took place, especially given that the last major asteroid impact 66 million years ago, known as Chicxulub, is implicated in the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Bennu, at 500 meters (1,640 feet), is considerably smaller than the estimated 10 to 15 kilometer size of the Chicxulub impactor – but even so, the results are alarming.
“Our simulations, which inject up to 400 million tons of dust into the stratosphere, show marked disruptions in climate, atmospheric chemistry, and global photosynthesis,” write Lan Dai and Axel Timmerman of Pusan National University in South Korea.
“Global mean temperatures are projected to drop by 4 degrees Celsius, and global precipitation decreases by 15 percent in our simulations.”
The effects of a medium- to large-sized impact are not fully known; such a catastrophic event is likely to have long- and far-reaching consequences. Scientists have probed the effects of the Chicxulub impact based on geological, fossil, and tree records, which combine to paint a pretty grim picture.
To understand the effects of future impacts, Dai and Timmerman used the Aleph supercomputer at the university’s IBS Center for Climate Physics to simulate a 500-meter asteroid colliding with Earth, including simulations of terrestrial and marine ecosystems that were omitted from previous simulations.
It’s not the ******-***** that would devastate Earth, but what would come after. Such an impact would release 100 to 400 million metric tons of dust into the planet’s atmosphere, the researchers found, disrupting the atmosphere’s chemistry, dimming the Sun enough to interfere with photosynthesis, and hitting the climate like a wrecking ball.
In addition to the drop in temperature and precipitation, their results showed an ozone depletion of 32 percent. Previous studies have shown that ozone depletion can devastate Earth’s plant life.
“The abrupt impact winter would provide unfavorable climate conditions for plants to grow, leading to an initial 20 to 30 percent reduction of photosynthesis in terrestrial and marine ecosystems,” Dai says. “This would likely cause massive disruptions in global food security.”
But it’s not all doom and gloom. While terrestrial plants are sensitive to such changes and take a while to recover, algae that live in bodies of water not only bounced back more quickly, recovering within months, they grew to volumes they don’t reach under current, normal climate conditions.
Climatic and ecological simulations of the effects of a Bennu impact, averaged over 24 months. (IBS)
This unexpected behavior was linked to iron in the asteroid dust and dust from material ejected from Earth on impact, a nutrient that helped the simulated algae thrive. This was especially the case for marine diatoms, on which zooplankton feed – suggesting a possible avenue for alleviating food insecurity, the researchers say.
It’s impossible to tell exactly how often our planet has been smacked by large asteroids in its history. Craters are erased and covered over by erosion processes. Some large rocks explode in the air, leaving only debris that is difficult to identify in the geological record if you’re not looking for it.
Estimates, however, suggest that it’s not uncommon. Which means humanity as a whole would likely survive a rendezvous with Bennu, albeit in smaller numbers than prior, and with dramatically altered lifestyles, at least for a while.
“On average, medium-sized asteroids collide with Earth about every 100 to 200 thousand years,” Timmermann says. “This means that our early human ancestors may have experienced some of these planet-shifting events before with potential impacts on human evolution and even our own genetic makeup.”
We’re as bad as cockroaches, honestly.
The research has been published in Science Advances.

Inside Trump’s Hastily Written Proposal to ‘Own’ Gaza
Inside Trump’s Hastily Written Proposal to ‘Own’ Gaza
When President Trump announced his proposal for the United States to take ownership of Gaza on Tuesday, he shocked even senior members of his own White House and government.
While his announcement looked formal and thought-out — he read the plan from a sheet of paper — his administration had not done even the most basic planning to examine the feasibility of the idea, according to four people with knowledge of the discussions, who were not authorized to speak publicly.
It wasn’t only the Americans who were scrambling; the announcement came as just as much of a surprise to Mr. Trump’s Israeli visitors. Soon before they walked out for their joint news conference on Tuesday, Mr. Trump surprised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel by telling him he planned to announce the Gaza ownership idea, according to two people briefed on their interactions.
Inside the U.S. government, there had been no meetings with the State Department or Pentagon, as would normally occur for any serious foreign policy proposal, let alone one of such magnitude. There had been no working groups. The Defense Department had produced no estimates of the troop numbers required, or cost estimates, or even an outline of how it might work.
There was little beyond an idea inside the president’s head.
Unlike major foreign policy announcements with past presidents, including Mr. Trump, the notion of the United States controlling Gaza had never been part of a public discussion before Tuesday.
But privately, Mr. Trump had been talking about U.S. ownership of the enclave for weeks. And his thinking had accelerated, according to two administration officials, after his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, returned from Gaza last week and described the horrific conditions there.
But nobody — not in the White House, not the Israelis — expected Mr. Trump to roll out the idea on Tuesday until shortly before he did so. The idea was met with immediate opposition from the Arab world, including from Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally. And in comments to reporters on Wednesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt tried to soften some of Mr. Trump’s statements.
While Mr. Trump had questioned why Palestinians would want to return to Gaza after being relocated and suggested the area could become a haven for tourists, Ms. Leavitt maintained that Mr. Trump simply wanted Jordan and Egypt to take in Palestinians “temporarily.” And she minimized the idea of U.S. financial investment, despite Mr. Trump positing a “long-term ownership” interest.
She also said the president had not committed to putting boots on the ground, although Mr. Trump had said: “We’ll do what is necessary. And if it’s necessary, we’ll do that.”
It is unclear whether Mr. Trump previously discussed the matter in any detail with the Israelis. A spokeswoman for the Israeli embassy did not respond to a message seeking clarity.
His presentation left more questions than answers, such as: How would this work? How many U.S. troops would be required to clear out ****** and the mountains of rubble, and defuse all the unexploded ordnance? What would it cost to rebuild a demolition site the size of Las Vegas? How would seizing ************ territory be justified under international law? And what would happen to two million refugees?
In the hours after the announcement, senior administration officials were notably short on substantive answers. The reason for their evasiveness soon became clear: No actual details existed.
On Wednesday, Mr. Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, appeared on “CBS Mornings” to sell the Gaza idea. But it was clear from the conversation that this was less a plan than “concepts of a plan,” as Mr. Trump described his ideas for health care policy during the 2024 campaign. That plan never materialized.
“The fact that nobody has a realistic solution, and he puts some very bold, fresh new ideas out on the table, I don’t think should be criticized in any way,” Mr. Waltz said. “I think it’s going to bring the entire region to come with their own solutions if they don’t like Mr. Trump’s solution.”
Mr. Trump has been publicly pressuring the Jordanians and Egyptians for weeks to take in people from Gaza, but so far both countries’ leaders have refused. Forcibly removing the Gaza Palestinians would violate international law, but Mr. Trump said in his news conference on Tuesday that he expected they would be eager to leave the land because it was uninhabitable. Perhaps they could return eventually, he said.
He said all of that while standing beside Mr. Netanyahu, whose military campaign had obliterated much of Gaza after the ****** terrorist attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023 — creating the very conditions Mr. Trump was referring to.
“The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too,” Mr. Trump said. “We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site. Level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings. Level it out.”
Mr. Netanyahu, who has been trying to clear ****** from Gaza since the Oct. 7 massacre of more than 1,200 people, looked pleased as Mr. Trump spoke.
Other U.S. officials were less thrilled about the proposal. Two people close to Mr. Trump insisted it was his idea alone; one said they had never heard him mention the involvement of U.S. troops before Tuesday.
Several senior officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive discussions, told The New York Times that they were still trying to figure out the genesis of the idea, and considered it fantastical even for Mr. Trump.
The concept is difficult to square with Mr. Trump’s criticisms of previous presidents for nation-building in the Middle East. His proposal that America take responsibility for one of the world’s worst disaster zones also came as he was shutting down the primary federal government agency responsible for foreign development assistance, U.S.A.I.D.
But Mr. Trump’s impulses have never been as anti-interventionist as the isolationists in his party would like them to be. When the Iraq war began, he initially cheered it before condemning it. In 2011, when he considered running for president, he said the United States should “take the oil” from Iraq, and he has promoted the idea of the U.S. military extracting critical minerals from overseas war zones.
In his second presidential term he has put his imperialist impulses on display. He has said he wants the United States to buy Greenland, refusing to rule out military force despite the existence of a U.S. base there. He has said he wants to take back the Panama Canal and that Canada should become America’s 51st state. He has said he thinks the United States should be entitled to Ukraine’s natural resources as repayment for all the military aid America has sent to help the Ukrainians defend themselves against the Russians.
Mr. Trump views foreign policy as a real estate deal maker. He has never cared about international law, never lectured autocratic leaders about human rights as other U.S. presidents have done.
Instead, for decades, he has viewed the world as a collection of countries that are ripping America off. He is preoccupied by the question of how to gain leverage over other nations, whether they are allies or adversaries. And he searches for ways to use American power to dominate other countries and to extract whatever he can. Mr. Trump does not believe in “win-win” diplomacy; all deals, whether in business or foreign affairs, have a clear winner and a clear loser.
Like Mr. Trump, his Middle East envoy, Mr. Witkoff, is a real estate developer and investor who has done business in the region. And Mr. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, another real estate investor who worked the Middle East portfolio in his first term, riffed last year about the incredible development opportunities presented by the Gaza waterfront.
Several advisers to Mr. Trump said they expected the Gaza ownership idea to die away quietly as it became clear to Mr. Trump that it was unfeasible. And that already seemed to be happening by Wednesday afternoon.
But Daniel B. Shapiro, who served as the U.S. ambassador to Israel under President Barack Obama, and more recently at the Pentagon, said even just floating the idea risked provoking more extremism: “This is not a serious proposal. The U.S. taking over Gaza, at massive cost in dollars and troops, is about as likely as Mexico paying for the wall or the United States seizing Iraq’s oil.”
“The danger is that extremists within the Israeli government and terrorists of various stripes will take it literally and seriously, and start to act on it,” he said. “It could imperil the further release of hostages, put a target on the back of U.S. personnel and undercut prospects of a Saudi-Israel normalization deal.”
When the Trump team hears warnings like this from former Democratic administration officials, they counter that Obama officials (although Mr. Shapiro was not among them) incorrectly warned that the Middle East would descend into violence after Mr. Trump moved the United States Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in 2017. They also point out that it was Mr. Trump who delivered normalization agreements between Israel and four *******-majority states in his first term — an effort, known as the Abraham Accords, that the Biden administration tried unsuccessfully to expand upon.
Mr. Trump’s Gaza takeover idea delighted many on the hard right in Israel and some within America’s pro-Israel community. The Israeli government has long wanted to seize back Gaza from the Palestinians to ensure that the land cannot be used to launch terrorist attacks against Israel.
David Friedman, who served as Mr. Trump’s ambassador to Israel in his first term, was taken by surprise by the announcement but called the president’s idea “brilliant and out of the box creative and frankly the only solution I’ve heard in 50 years that has the chance of actually changing the dynamics in that troubled part of the world.”
Mr. Friedman said in an interview that the challenge his team had faced in the first Trump term was that “we never could answer the basic question, which is, is there anybody who can rule over Gaza that will not be a threat to the people in Gaza as well as to Israel?”
He said it was intolerable for ****** or the Palestinians who supported it to remain in Gaza. Asked who would live there instead, Mr. Friedman said that after 15 years of rebuilding it would be a “market-driven process.”
“I know I’m sounding like a real estate guy,” he said, but he could not help but imagine the possibilities presented by “25 miles of sunset-facing beachfront.”

Armstrong posts triple-double as Taipans bite Bullets
Armstrong posts triple-double as Taipans bite Bullets
NBA prospect Taran Armstrong posted the first triple-double of his NBL career as he fired the Cairns Taipans to a 100-88 home win over the Brisbane Bullets.
Armstrong exploded in the second half on Thursday night and finished with a equal game-high 28 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds.
Sam Wardenburg (23 points, seven rebounds) and Tanner Groves (15 points) were also effective for Cairns.
The Taipans, who will finish last on the ladder, have won four of their last six games in a strong finish to a campaign that ends away to Tasmania on Saturday night.
Keandre Cook did his best for Brisbane, tallying 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Casey Prather had 19 points.
Prather was in early foul trouble and spent time being assessed for a knee injury after slipping on the court during the first half.
It didn’t stop the Bullets erasing a 12-point deficit to tie the game at 48-all by half-time, with Cook instrumental.
But Armstrong and Wardenburg stepped up for Cairns in the third quarter and the second-year guard ripped the game away from the visitors in the final *******.
The result brought down the curtain on an injury-riddled season for the Bullets, who will miss the NBL Finals for the sixth straight year.
Key players James Batemon, Josh Bannan, Tyrell Harrison, Sam McDaniel, Rocco Zikarsky, Deng Adel, Emmett Naar and Jarred Bairstow have all missed significant periods of the campaign.
Bullets chief executive Malcolm Watts this week revealed the club will commission an independent review of the injuries that derailed their season.
It comes amid ongoing speculation around the coaching future of Justin Schueller, who is contracted for next season.

Kyndryl expands SASE services with Palo Alto Networks
Kyndryl expands SASE services with Palo Alto Networks
IT infrastructure services provider Kyndryl has launched end-to-end, secure access service edge (SASE) services, combined with artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Palo Alto Networks technology, to enhance network security by adopting a cloud-first, zero-trust network security offering.
Kyndryl noted that according to survey findings from its latest Readiness report, while as many as 94% of business leaders identify technology modernisation as a high priority, only 39% of businesses say their IT infrastructure is prepared to manage future risks.
Kyndryl’s aim is to integrate the SASE services with the Palo Alto Networks Prisma SASE offering to unite network and security into a unified cloud-delivered service, providing organisations with granular control over user authentication and authorisation, enabling secure access to business applications, as well as edge and internet of things technologies.
To display further confidence in the launch, Kyndryl noted that as part of its own network modernisation transformation since becoming an independent company, it had shifted from an on-premise network architecture with 54 datacentres to cloud-first, SASE-based, zero-trust security principles using select services from its technology partners, including Prisma SASE from Palo Alto Networks.
In addition, the company revealed that its simplified security posture currently supports Kyndryl’s global hybrid workforce, enabling employees to access business applications across devices, resulting in lower IT operational spend.
By turning to the same expertise used in its own successful migrations, Kyndryl’s believes its technicians, accredited with network security certifications from Palo Alto Networks, will be fully equipped to help customers in migrating from their on-premise environments to a flexible and scalable SASE offering that can offer best-in-class security, while ensuring no less than an “exceptional” user experience for IT teams and end users.
“To mitigate operational risk, business leaders need to prioritise upgrading IT infrastructure and enhancing cyber security measures, as research shows that nearly half of the world’s mission-critical business technology is out-of-date or nearing end of life,” said Paul Savill, global practice leader of network and edge computing at Kyndryl. “As AI becomes a key focus for many organisations, our new SASE services, combined with Palo Alto Networks’ AI-powered Prisma SASE solution, will enable businesses to transform securely by adopting a zero-trust approach to protect against cyber threats in real-time.”
Kyndryl’s SASE services expand on its existing partnership with Palo Alto Networks, which already offers customers Prisma Access, next-generation firewall, private 5G and OT security, as well as its Security Operations as a Platform service, with Palo Alto Networks’ Cortex XSOAR platform.
“Implementing a SASE approach is one of the biggest network and security initiatives for an organisation to take on, requiring significant transformation,” said Palo Alto Networks chief partnerships officer Kristy Friedrichs. “These organisations need a solution that helps them scale at the speed of their business, especially with a hybrid workforce and an ever-expanding threat landscape. We’re offering our joint customers exactly what they need to help them transform.”

Nintendo Switch 2 Will Release With an “affordable” Price Tag Because “inflation is currently rising”
Nintendo Switch 2 Will Release With an “affordable” Price Tag Because “inflation is currently rising”
The slow wait for the Nintendo Switch 2 release continues but there’s been a small development. The company recently gave us hints at the pricing of the upcoming successor to the 2017 hit console. Company president Shuntaro Furukawa recently reassured the public that affordability will continue to be a big point.

During a recent financial Q&A session, Furukawa addressed investor concerns, stating that the company is taking inflation and exchange rate changes into account. Honestly, we just hope it doesn’t cost as much as the PlayStation 5 and competes well with handhelds like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be priced competitively
But how much exactly is competitive? | Image Credit: Nintendo
During a Q&A session following Nintendo’s latest financial report, Furukawa talked about how inflation and currency exchange rates could influence the price of the Switch 2. He notes that the economic situation of the world has changed making affordability a more complex issue. Here is his statement, translated via Nintendo Everything.
We are aware that inflation is currently rising and that the exchange rate environment has changed significantly since the launch of the Nintendo Switch in 2017. We also need to consider the affordable prices that customers expect from Nintendo products. When considering the price of our products, we believe that it is necessary to consider these factors from multiple angles. At this time, we cannot announce the specific price of the Nintendo Switch 2, but we are considering it taking into account various points
Furukawa stopped short of announcing a price for the Switch 2, but it’s not like we don’t have any speculations already. Many believe the new console will launch at around $400. This would place it slightly above the original Switch, which launched at $300, but still below the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, which start at $500.
A $400 price tag would place the Switch 2 in a competitive position, especially against the Steam Deck and other handheld gaming devices. The successor to the Switch is obviously coming with upgrades. But even with growing costs and inflation, Nintendo needs to make sure that the final product remains within an acceptable price range for consumers.
The market has also become tougher for the Switch 2

There’s also the potential for scalpers to exploit high demand. Furukawa assured investors that Nintendo is taking steps to prevent scalping. This proactive approach is huge because we’ve already seen how big of a problem it can be with previous console launches such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Shuntaro Furukawa says Nintendo will put measures in place to prevent Switch 2 scalpers
“We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like). We are making preparations.” pic.twitter.com/wrwHP59tZs
— Wario64 (@Wario64) February 4, 2025
Another key factor influencing the Switch 2’s price is its competition. We’ve seen the recent success of handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally which have brought gaming and portability together in a very good manner. The Switch 2 will have to be priced in consideration of them.
While these devices offer powerful hardware, they often come with premium price tags. Nintendo’s ability could offer a more affordable alternative while maintaining strong first-party game support. The Switch 2’s hardware upgrades need to be good enough for people to get it over the other options.
Nintendo has confirmed that it will reveal more details about the Switch 2 in a special Nintendo Direct presentation on April 2, 2025. This event is expected to include information about the console’s official price, release date, and launch lineup. We’ll catch you there!
