Chernobylite 2 Releases in Early Access in Just One Month

Chernobylite 2 Releases in Early Access in Just One Month Chernobylite 2 Releases in Early Access in Just One Month It has been revealed by Farm 51 that Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone will be released on PC in early access on March 6, 2025. This surprise announcement came just weeks after a new trailer that perfectly showcases everything this post-apocalyptic-style game has to offer, from a massive open world to branching character development options. The first Chernobylite game was released in 2019 and flew under the radar for a bit. It was a first-person survival game with exploration options left and right, plus a base-building ecosystem and some intense combat mechanics. While the first game is available on all platforms, Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone is entering early access exclusively on PC. Enter the Zone I’m coming into Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone hot off an irradiated spree through games like STALKER 2 and Fallout, and I love it. I’m a huge fan of the first game, which looks phenomenal and offers a top-tier story and some interesting features, and I can’t wait for the second game to enter early access. Chernobylite 2 has already been a hit with investors. This Kickstarter-backed title has secured 170% of what it was aiming for to bring the game to market, and there’s still a week left in the campaign. If you pledge to support the game, you’ll get access to both a beta and demo version of the game. Here’s the most recent trailer for Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone: On Kickstarter, Chernobylite 2 has secured $168,400 (at the time of publishing) out of a goal of $98,678. The most exciting stretch goal hit so far introduces first-person combat to the game. In a twist, Chernobylite 2 breaks away from the first-person exclusive perspective of the 2019 opening title and opts to use a third-person perspective. But now, thanks to those backing the game, you’ll be able to switch whenever you want. Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone also offers fully open-world exploration, while the first game focused on smaller, more confined ‘regions’ that you could jump in and out of. I’m ready for Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone – it enters early access on Steam on March 6, 2025. Are you going to give it a try? Let us know on the Insider Gaming forum. Owner of spyware used in alleged WhatsApp breach ends contract with Italy | WhatsApp Owner of spyware used in alleged WhatsApp breach ends contract with Italy | WhatsApp Paragon Solutions, whose military-grade hacking software was allegedly used to target 90 people, including journalists and members of civil society, in two dozen countries, has terminated its client relationship with Italy, according a person familiar with the matter. The decision to terminate the contract comes less than one week after WhatsApp announced that Paragon’s spyware had been used to target dozens of people. Like other spyware vendors, Paragon sells its cyberweapon to government clients who are supposed to use it to prevent crime. It remains unclear who the specific government clients were behind the alleged attacks. The decision to end the Italy contract followed revelations that an Italian investigative journalist and two activists who were critical of Italy’s dealings with Libya were among the people who had had been targeted with the spyware. The work of all three individuals has been critical of Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni’s rightwing government. Responding to the allegations of involvement late on Wednesday, Meloni’s office denied that domestic intelligence services or the government were behind the alleged breaches. The person familiar with the matter, who spoke to the Guardian on the condition of anonymity, said Paragon had “out of an abundance of caution” initially suspended the Italy contract when the first allegation of potential abuse of the spyware emerged last Friday. The decision to fully terminate the contract, the person said, was made on Wednesday after Paragon determined that Italy had broken the terms of service and ethical framework it had agreed under its Paragon contract. The Guardian has contacted an Italian government spokesperson for comment. Meloni is expected to face more questions about the alleged breaches in parliament. The Italian government also revealed on Wednesday that it had been told by WhatsApp that the number of affected Italians “appeared to be seven”. It is unclear who the other alleged victims are. Asked for comment, a Paragon representative declined to confirm or deny the development, and said it was the company’s policy to not discuss potential client matters. Francesco Cancellato, the editor-in-chief of Fanpage, a highly regarded investigative news outlet, was the first to publicly state last Friday that he was one of the 90 people who had been notified by WhatsApp that his mobile phone had been targeted, and likely compromised, by the hacking software. Like Pegasus, the spyware made by Israel’s NSO Group, Paragon’s Graphite spyware can infect a mobile phone without a user’s knowledge and without a user clicking on a malicious link or email. WhatsApp said the 90 people who were likely compromised had been added to WhatsApp group chats and been sent malicious PDFs, which then probably infected the phones. WhatsApp said all of the hacking attempts had been discovered in December, in part through the help of the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, which tracks digital threats against civil society. It is not clear for how long the individuals were possibly surveilled or the government clients involved in each case. While it is not entirely clear why Cancellato may have been targeted, his publication last year published a high-profile investigation that exposed young fascists within Meloni’s party. The two other people who were targeted, Husam El Gomati, a Libyan activist living in Sweden, and Luca Casarini, the founder of NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans, have both been vocal critics of Italy’s alleged complicity in abuses suffered by migrants in Libya. While Paragon’s move is likely to assuage some concerns, there are still outstanding questions about dozens of other cases that WhatsApp discovered. Italy said earlier on Wednesday that it had been told by WhatsApp that those targets live in countries across Europe – and possibly other countries – including Belgium, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Paragon was reportedly recently acquired by a US firm called AE Industrial Partners, which on its website is described as a private investment firm with $5.6bn of assets under management, focused on markets including national security. The company has not responded to requests for comment. Paragon agreed a $2m contract last year with ICE, the US immigration and customs enforcement agency. The contract, agreed under the Biden administration, was reportedly suspended while the administration sought to determine whether it complied with an executive order that restricted the use of spyware by the federal government. The current status of the contract is not known. Neither ICE nor Paragon has responded to the Guardian’s questions about the contract. Protesters torch ex-Bangladesh PM’s home Protesters torch ex-Bangladesh PM’s home Protesters in Bangladesh have vandalised and set fire to the former family home of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, as well as those of other members of her party. The unrest was sparked by news that Hasina would address the country via social media from India, where she has been in exile since student-led protests ousted her last year. Hasina, who had ruled the country for 20 years, was seen as an autocrat whose government ruthlessly clamped down on dissent. On Wednesday evening, an excavator smashed down the house of Hasina’s late father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who is also Bangladesh’s founding president. The structure had been repurposed into a museum. Only 23% of Developers Believe They’ve Conducted ‘Enough’ QA for New Games Only 23% of Developers Believe They’ve Conducted ‘Enough’ QA for New Games In a recent study published by modl.ai, it was revealed that a whopping 77% of developers polled felt like they didn’t conduct enough QA for their studio’s most recent releases. Additionally, 50% of developers surveyed felt that QA budgets aren’t ‘growing fast enough’ to keep up with the ‘increasing complexity of modern games’. The study was pieced together to take stock of the quality control ecosystem in the world of gaming development. It was focused primarily on gauging the adoption and anticipation of artificial intelligence in QA processes and procedures. Not Ready But Released In recent years, we’ve seen some big-budget games released in a woeful state. More than a few titles have hit the open market in a paltry condition, boasting bugs across the board and performance issues left and right. Last year, STALKER 2 was released to an eager reception but it was hampered by a stack of bugs – particularly on console platforms. In 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 was released in such a bad state that it faced legal concerns from investors. In the report published by modl.ai, it was revealed that 94% of developers (extrapolated) believe that AI will ‘play an important role in the future of game QA’. But with that being said, it comes as a surprise that just 18% of developers feel they’re ‘fully prepared to implement AI in all QA processes’. They recognise that it’s the future of QA and testing, but they’re not ready to adopt it just yet. In the numbers, 70.3% of survey respondents said they’d never launched a bug-free game. In a statement on the data, Dajana Dimovska, the CEO of Indium Play, said: You’re never going to catch every bug, but AI can get you closer. It can take on early testing responsibilities, reducing the need for large QA teams throughout the production phase. As the game reaches a more playable and polished state, manual QA testers step in — working alongside AI to identify and address quality issues. This collaboration between experienced testers and AI ensures a better final product. Many are ready to place stock in the implementation of AI-based QA. In one slide in the report from modl.ai, it was revealed that 21% of developers feel that AI testing is much more effective than traditional methods. Presently, the blockers preventing industry-wide adoption include the complexity of setting up and operating AI-based systems, the costs of doing so, and the resistance to change – and fear of facing redundancy. Do you think more AI in QA processes would eliminate more bugs ahead of launch? Let us know on the Insider Gaming forum what you think. Advanced Micro Devices Bottoms Out: Nowhere to Go But Up in 2025 Advanced Micro Devices Bottoms Out: Nowhere to Go But Up in 2025 Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:) share price plunged more than 10% following what can only be described as a great report. While the Q1 guidance may be tepid, analysts set the bar high, and growth is expected to continue under the influence of AI for many years. Datacenter growth is a factor in the plunge; it slowed from previously higher levels but remains solid and in hyper-growth mode, rising nearly 70% in the quarter, providing no reason to believe the company is in danger, far from it. AMD’s position in the data center semiconductor market is well-established, and market share gains lie ahead. The slowing segment growth is due more to the law of large numbers than anything else; the $3.9 billion in revenue contribution is a company record expected to be exceeded in 2025. Additionally, the company is accelerating its AI stack development, making it easier to deploy and use, a factor that will impact results as the year progresses. As for the legacy segments, PC and embedded markets are well-positioned for long-term growth, and internal metrics show PC markets gaining traction. The takeaway is that AMD’s 10% stock price plunge is likely a market capitulation caused by overinflated expectations among retail traders, setting it up for a strong rebound later this year. Advanced Micro Devices Falls After Record-Setting Guidance Advanced Micro Devices’ stock price fell after reporting record-setting Q4 results because the guidance is lackluster compared to the analysts’ consensus reported by MarketBeat. However, the company forecasts another quarter of solid, double-digit growth, with revenue up 30% and margins widening, and CEO Lisa Tsu is known to be cautious in her assessments. Regarding Q4, there is nothing wrong with the results, with the $7.7 in net revenue up 24% year-over-year, growth accelerating, and strength in the DC and Client segment. DC grew by 69% while Client by 58%, driven by demand for Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs, and Ryzen processors. Areas of weakness include Gaming and Embedded. The Gaming segment contracted by nearly 60% as demand from end markets remains weak and Embedded by 13%. The Gaming segment may remain weak throughout 2025, but Embedded will revert to growth soon as manufacturing and IoT demand picks up. The margin news is also good news for investors. The adjusted gross margin widened by 300 basis points and the operating margin by 200, driving a leveraged increase on the bottom line. Adjusted earnings of $1.09 are up 41% yearly due to improving earnings quality, and revenue leverage is expected to stick in 2025. Advanced Micro Devices Builds Value While Aggressively Investing in AI Advanced Micro Devices built value for shareholders in 2024 despite what its CEO described as an “aggressive investment” in AI. The balance sheet highlights include a flat cash position and reduced short-term investments offset by increased receivables, inventory, and reduced liability. The net result is a 2.8% increase in shareholder equity and an expectation for additional gains in 2025. The analysts are bullish on AMD stock but present a hurdle for the market in Q1 2025. The guidance resulted in numerous price target reductions weighing on market sentiment. However, the analysts’ conviction in the Moderate Buy rating remains high, with 21 of 29 or 72% rating the stock at Buy or higher. The new revisions put the stock at the low end of the range, with a potential 40% upside at the consensus. Rosenblatt Securities is the stand-out revision, reiterating its Buy rating and $250 price target, which implies more than 100% upside for AMD stock. Advance Micro Devices Stock is at Rock Bottom Advanced Micro Devices stock price is trading near rock bottom following the Q1 guidance. Rock bottom aligns with a significant support level from 2023, set before the AI bubble drove the stock price up by 100%. The indicators suggest the market is deeply oversold at these levels, having retraced 100% of the rally, and the declining volume shows a lack of conviction in the sell-off. The rebound could be significant once it begins; the only question is when it will start. The critical support target is in the $95 to $105 region and likely tested more than once before a sustainable rally forms. Why This Toy Stock Just Hit a 52-Week High Why This Toy Stock Just Hit a 52-Week High Mattel stock was one of the big gainers on Wednesday. The stock price was up 15% on the day and has risen 17% YTD. The outlook for 2025 calls for slow and steady growth. The venerable toy maker came to life in Q4 When you think of Mattel (NASDAQ:), you think of Barbie, Hot Wheels, and American Girl dolls, not necessarily the performance of its stock . But on Wednesday, the stock price was the story as the toy maker’s stock was one of the top gainers on the market, rising more than 15% to almost $21 per share. The share price for Mattel stock is not only at a 52-week high, but it is at the highest level it has been since October of 2023. Here’s why Mattel stock was surging. Solid Fourth Quarter Earnings Growth Investors were pleased with Mattel’s fourth quarter earnings report, released on Tuesday after the closing bell. However, the numbers were solid, but not spectacular. Revenue was only up 2% to $1.65 billion, but it beat estimates of $1.64 billion. Net income was down 4% in the quarter to $141 million. Earnings were basically flat at 42 cents per share. However, on an adjusted basis, when you exclude severance and restructuring expenses and changes to deferred tax assets, earnings were up significantly. The adjusted earnings were 35 cents per share, up from 29 cents per share the same quarter a year ago. Adjusted earnings were far better than the 20 cents per share that analysts had expected. In North America, net sales were up 1% year over year due to growth in vehicles, primarily Hot Wheels, along with action figures, building sets, and games. The gains were offset by declines in the infant, toddler, and preschool segments, as well as dolls, primarily Barbie. Internationally, net sales increased 3% led by growth in vehicles, primarily Hot Wheels, along with the infant, toddler, and preschool segments. The gains were partly offset by declines in dolls, primarily Barbie. For the full year, net sales were down 1% to $5.38 billion but net income was up some 153% to $542 million, or $1.59 per share. This was due to keeping expenses in check, lower provision from income taxes, and a one-time spike in non-operating income. Mattel has benefitted from its Optimizing for Profitable Growth expense reduction program. Competing Against Barbie Movie It should be noted, however, that these sales numbers were compared to 2023, when the blockbuster Barbie movie came out, which escalated exposure and sales. So, the increases, while small, are viewed as more impressive than they otherwise would have been. “These results are particularly noteworthy considering the comparison against the success of the Barbie movie which contributed approximately $100,000,000 of operating income in 2023. Execution on our toy strategy was strong, and we grew global market share in key categories of dolls, vehicles and games. We also made meaningful progress on our entertainment strategy across film, television, digital, consumer products and live experiences,” Ynon Kreis, chairman and CEO of Mattel, said on the earnings call. The CEO also cited the success of the Optimizing for Profitable Growth program on the call, saying it is tracking ahead of schedule. Already, the company has saved $83 million of its $200 million target by the end of 2026. The cost savings have boosted Mattel’s cash position by about 10% to $1.4 billion, that’s after repurchasing $400 million in shares. In 2025, Mattel plans to buy back another $600 million shares, which should help its share price. Outlook for 2025 Mattel issued guidance for 2025, and it projects more slow, steady growth. Mattel is calling for net sales to increase 2% to 3% in 2025. Operating income is also anticipated to rise, as Mattel targets a range of $740 million to $765 million. That would be up from $738 million in 2024. The adjusted EPS is $1.66 to $1.72 per share, up from $1.62 adjusted EPS in 2024, while the gross margin is anticipated to remain at 50.9%. Lastly, free cash flow is estimated to be roughly the same at $600 million. Mattel stock is up 17% year-to-date, with most of it coming Wednesday. Over the past 12 months it has gained 9%. Analysts expect about an 11% upside over the next 12 months with a price target of $23 per share. But it has not been the best long-term performer with a five-year annualized return of 7.4% and a 10-year annualized return of -3% per year. The stock is pretty cheap with a P/E of 11 and it seems headed in the right direction. But I would expect slow and steady, not spectacular performance. Sony was making a space shooter for its unreleased Nintendo PlayStation console Sony was making a space shooter for its unreleased Nintendo PlayStation console _SilverHawk_4h ago This is the Genesis of why Nes fanatics hates sony playstation. Its funny that the companies follows a lot of the same formulas today that caused a lot of the rift between them trying to make the first nes play-station. Ken kutaragi liked nes games a lot but thought they could have stories that are more engaging like films in the cinema and wanted a more advanced hardware with the first nes play-station to make it a reality. He wanted a powerful console, more ergonomic controller with the console using cd-roms with massive storage for the time. Nintendo thought the console was too powerful and having cd-rom storage was excessive. They also thought making games for adults was a silly idea. Looking at Nintendo and Playstation today and they basically follow the same formulas. Nintendo has weak hardware with controllers that arent really ergonic and their games are geared to children. sony makes powerful playstation hardware with ergonical controllers and have a lot of cinematic games made for young and older adults. Top 3 Picks Too Good to Pass Up as Trade Tensions Linger Top 3 Picks Too Good to Pass Up as Trade Tensions Linger With President Trump’s new round of tariffs targeting Canada, Mexico, and China, investors are closely watching how businesses in the affected regions will adapt. Initially set to take effect on February 4, the proposed 25% tariffs on ********* and ******** goods have been paused for 30 days following negotiations. In exchange, both countries have committed to deploying 10,000 troops each to their U.S. borders to help curb ******** immigration and drug trafficking. Meanwhile, the 10% tariff on ******** imports remains in place. While this temporary reprieve has eased some market concerns, industries tied to cross-border trade remain in focus. Investors are looking for companies with the resilience to navigate these changes and emerge stronger in the months ahead. Three stocks stand out as potential beneficiaries: ********* National Railway (NYSE:), Cemex SAB de CV (NYSE:), and Tesla (NASDAQ:). 1. Canada’s Transportation Activity Calls on National Railway Stock With ********* goods subject to ongoing tariff uncertainty, a strong and efficient logistics network is essential to manage supply chain disruptions. ********* National Railway, one of North America’s largest transportation companies, is well-positioned to capitalize on these challenges. With this theme in mind, it makes sense to see shares of ********* National Railway start to bottom as of late 2024, a support level around $98 to $100 a share that hasn’t been broken since. This would also make the stock trade at only 74% of its 52-week high, the foundational factor for this seeming value play in Canada’s new tariff reality. But here’s why investors should trust this belief. Wall Street analysts now forecast up to $1.53 in earnings per share (EPS) for the same quarter 12 months from now, calling for a net growth rate of 18% from today’s $1.30 EPS. If tariffs were bad for Canada’s logistics industry, then analysts would have shifted this forecast much lower. Nor would those at the Royal Bank of Canada have reiterated their Outperform rating on the stock while also placing a valuation of up to $171 a share for ********* National Railway stock. This view now calls for up to 73% upside from today’s low price, another confirmation for investors to take a look into this name today. 2. Construction Rebounds Can Help Cemex Stock Mexico’s cement and construction materials exports to the United States aren’t likely to stop because of tariffs. If anything, there will be more demand in the coming months. Considering that the mortgage market index now hovers at a 1996 low level, a rebound in the American housing market could suddenly call for more construction. That is where CEMEX S.A.B. de C.V., known as Cemex, comes into play, a stock that has also bottomed since late 2024 and a name that still trades at a low 60% of its 52-week high to make it another attractive potential Buy in today’s market. This is also why Wall Street analysts have kept a consensus price target of $7.65 per share on Cemex stock. This view would call for a net upside of 26.6% from where it trades today. Recognizing this upside potential as a solid scenario, even bearish traders decided to step off the gas a little with their short positions, as seen by the 7.8% decline in the company’s short interest for the past month alone. More than that, the market’s willingness to pay a premium for the stock compared to other peers in the cement industry is a clear sign. By trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of up to 19.7x today, Cemex is now above the industry’s average of 11.4x. Some investors might call this expensive, while others will know that markets always pay premiums for stocks they know will outperform in the coming months. 3. Tesla’s Technological Advantage Will Prevail The underlying assembly process is the difference between Tesla and other car makers like Ford Motor (NYSE:). While Tesla’s is mostly automated, Ford’s unionized workforce has stopped the company from implementing technology to help its assembly process and margins as a result. Without unions and counting on more technology in each of its assembly steps, Tesla stock is not only able to keep its prices lower than competitors but also set up to take over some of the market share that might be abandoned by the inability of these other brands to compete. This is why, at 80% of its 52-week high, Tesla stock is a potential bargain to watch out for in this new tariff environment. That’s also one of the reasons analysts at Mizuho felt comfortable reiterating their Outperform rating on Tesla stock, and this time leaving a valuation of up to $515 a share on it. To prove these analysts right, Tesla stock would have to rally by as much as 34.2% from where it trades today, not to mention make a new 52-week high as well to help this thesis live out. Volvo Cars hikes 2024 profit as it considers relocation due to tariffs Volvo Cars hikes 2024 profit as it considers relocation due to tariffs Sweden’s Volvo Cars on Thursday reported a 12% rise in full-year operating income and record revenue, but warned of severe market challenges ahead from intensifying electric vehicle competition and global tariffs. The company’s operating income came in at 22.3 billion Swedish kronor ($2.04 billion) in 2024 amid an 8% sales increase. However, profit slid 28% in the final three months of the year, which the company said was affected by a one-off 1.7 billion kronor impairment related to its joint venture with Swedish battery developer Northvolt, Novo Energy. Year-on-year sales for the fourth quarter nudged 1% higher, but shed 6% in China and 2% in the U.S. The company reiterated 2026 guidance to deliver a core earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) margin of 7-8%, but said 2025 would be a “challenging and transition year” toward Volvo Cars’ long-term growth ambitions, as it expected slower market growth and “increased discounts” across the industry. This will make it difficult to match the company’s 2024 volumes and profitability, it added. A Volvo EX30 fully electric car is displayed during Everything Electric London 2024 at ExCel in London, March 28, 2024. John Keeble | Getty Images News | Getty Images Many automakers are struggling with increased competition and high expenditure in the electric vehicle space, including leading players such as Tesla. Volvo Cars in September scrapped its plan to sell only EVs by 2030, citing “different speeds of adoption” by customers. In its 2024 results, the share of battery EV sales rose to 23% from 16% during the previous year. “I think it’s a reasonable performance given the amount of turbulence that we saw even in [20]24,” Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” of the results in a Thursday interview. “In [20]25 I think we’re going to see that turbulence increase. And the way I frame it is, I think we’re going to see turbulence in terms of trade tariffs, maybe some geopolitics, and we’re going to see some policy changes. I also think we’re going to see the transition to EV slow down a little bit, which is okay for Volvo Cars, because we have mild hybrid technology as well as plug in hybrid technology.” Global automotive stocks were hammered on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump announced 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, key production and supply bases for vehicle imports into the U.S. Many have regained ground since implementation of the duties was paused for 30 days. Ford CEO calls for ‘comprehensive’ tariff analysis for all countries Rowan said Volvo Cars was now assessing whether it needs to shift its production lines to protect itself. The company has already had to navigate increased tariffs for EVs coming from China into the European Union and was relocating production from China into Belgium as a result, he said. “Last year, we saw batteries increase from 7.5% to 25% when you import them to the U.S.A, if they’re originating from outside the U.S.A from a country without a free trade agreement,” he told CNBC. “So we’re going to see more of that, and we need to wait to see how it plays out, of course, but we’re preparing ourselves to see whether we need to start looking at production relocation or even supplier relocation to different parts of the world. So it’s going to be turbulent.” “Then we’re going to see this big shift to technology beyond electrification, so that software, silicon, connectivity and data, that’s going to become a lot more profound,” Rowan added. The high cost of developing new automotive technology such as partially self-driving vehicles is expected to spur industry consolidation, most recently leading to volatile merger talks at Japan’s Honda and Nissan. On competition from ******** players such as BYD, Rowan told CNBC: “The discount is focused mainly on the entry, the mass market EVs.” He added that his company doesn’t “really play in that sector” and mainly sells mild and plug-in electric hybrids in China, tapping into demand for a premium offering. “That said, I think we’ll start to see maybe in 2025 some additional discounts that may start to encroach on the premium market, as well as some of the Western brands lose market share in China. Then, of course, they’re going to retrench into their domestic markets and the other global markets and try and pick up market share there in order to keep the revenue streams at the same level,” Rowan said. “So I think the hyper-competitiveness and the price and discipline starts in China. But I do think that will permeate through Europe and into North America as well, through 2025.” Source link #Volvo #Cars #hikes #profit #considers #relocation #due #tariffs Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

NSW senator Hollie Hughes takes swipe at Sam Kerr in Parliament NSW senator Hollie Hughes takes swipe at Sam Kerr in Parliament An NSW Liberal senator has taken a swipe at Sam Kerr, saying the footballer currently on trial in England should note it was racist to attack white people. The Matildas superstar is in the midst of a trial for racially aggravated harassment of a police officer with intent to cause harm or distress. She was arrested after an incident in 2023, when she says she became terrified when trapped in a London cab during a drunken dispute over a fare. Footage played in court shows her calling a police officer “stupid and white”. NSW senator Hollie Hughes referred to the case during a debate about anti-Semitism in universities on Thursday. “If we talked about the destruction of you know … I’ll use my own race — of all Caucasians. Sam Kerr may take a note out of this book: it is racist to attack white people,” she told the chamber. Cabinet minister Murray Watt said the contribution was “quite an amazing speech” with the number of people at whom Senator Hughes took aim. “I think all Australians have admiration for Sam Kerr. Obviously, she’s gone through a difficult incident in the ***, but to be taking cheap shots at people like Sam Kerr to make a political statement, I think just shows you the lengths that Peter Dutton and his team will go,” he told reporters. Senator Hughes also had a crack at Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who was in Townsville visiting the deadly floods on Thursday while Parliament was sitting. But Opposition Leader Peter Dutton later said it was good the PM was visiting the disaster zone. Same Engine, Same MPG. Which is Better? Same Engine, Same MPG. Which is Better? Mazda CX-50 Hybrid vs Toyota RAV4 HybridA Girls Guide to Cars For what seems like forever, Toyota has had a corner on the compact hybrid SUV market with the RAV4 hybrid. Getting nearly 40 MPG, with comfortable seating for 4 and a fun-to-drive 219 HP, the RAV 4 delivers a lot for its $32K-$40K price tag. Yes, there are alternatives to the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, namely hybrid versions of the Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson. But the reliability and fuel economy in the Toyota RAV4 are hard to beat. However, late in 2025 Mazda, also a Japanese brand with a penchant for premium details, introduced a hybrid version of the Mazda CX-50 compact SUV using Toyota’s hybrid technology and engine. Both are similarly priced, have all wheel drive on demand and are similarly sized. So it raises the question: How are they different, and is one better than the other? This story is 100% human researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. Mazda CX-50: The Toyota RAV4’s Sister From Another Mister Credit: Liv Leigh Toyota was on to something in the late 1990s (!) when they began to mass-produce the Prius and sell it around the world. As we’ve seen in the last few years, hybrid technology has become a darling for car buyers who want better fuel economy and low emissions. Mazda jumped in a bit late, but did it with panache, partnering with Toyota, inarguably the top hybrid brand in the space, adding its hybrid system to the Mazda CX-50 to create the brand’s first hybrid SUV. The result? Two very differently outfitted compact SUVs that do thing the same: great fuel economy in a fun to drive SUV. To see how the two compare, we looked at some basic details and compared the top trims, with some surprising, and possibly decision-making, differences. Read: Green and Spacious: The Best 7-Seater Hybrid SUVs, From Luxury To Affordable Same Engine, Same MPG, Different Battery Credit: Erica Mueller Both the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-50 are powered by the same 4-cylinder engine assisted by a large battery and electric motors. The Toyota’s battery is the same lithium ion battery the company has traditionally used in hybrids, though the Mazda’s battery is a typically less-expensive nickel-metal hydride. Story continues Both generate 219 HP and have multiple drive modes including trail mode for optimal AWD function. Both have AWD standard and are estimated to get about 40 MPG, a tiny bit better than their competitors which tend to average about 38 MPG. Read: 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited: The Car I Wish We’d Purchased Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: More Choices Across the Board Credit: Erica Mueller Toyota loves to offer choices. Lots and lots of choices. There are seven trims across the RAV4 lineup, versus three in the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid trim line. Prices for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid start at $31,900 and top out at $40,205, though there are packages and options along the way that can enhance both the experience and the price. Mazda’s three CX-50 Hybrid trims range from $33,790 to $40,050 and offer limited options; the strategy is to define each trim by its features. Read: The Best Thing About the 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid? The Toyota Hybrid System Mazda CX-50: More Standard Luxuries Credit: Liv Leigh Within each of the three Mazda CX-50 trims there are a set group of features, all with the idea of focusing more on luxury and experience than price and customization. Even at the entry level Mazda offers keyless entry, adaptive cruise control with stop and go and leatherette seating. As a comparison, buyers have to move up to the middle-of-the-trim XLE Premium ($36,300) to get leatherette seating When Tech Matters More, Toyota Wins Credit: Toyota This is where Toyota really shines: The new multimedia system with built-in voice-assistance, a large 8″ touch screen in lower trim models and 10″ touch screen in top trims, a digital driver’s display and a nicely-equipped Toyota TSS 2.5 suite of safety features, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane trace assistance, road sign assistance and automatic emergency braking. The Mazda system’s screen is smaller and while now it’s touch-controlled, it sits pretty far from the driver and is easier to control via a dial on the center console between the front seats. The user experience design remains what we’ve seen Mazda for a while now; it’s good but not great. Buyers who use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto will find it very capable, and the system does allow wireless use of those phone apps. When Luxury Matters, Mazda is Wins Credit: Liv Leigh This is pretty clear the minute you set foot in the CX-50: it looks and feels more luxe than the Toyota. The interior design is a bit more refined and in the top Premium Plus model; it features a head up display, panoramic sunroof and a sporty center console with a shifter, auto hold button and mode selector. You’ll find leather seats, door panels and a leather-trimmed dashboard with drop-stitch trim for a tailored feel. It truly is elegant. Simply the choice of materials in the Mazda CX-50 feel lends to the refined, feel; leatherette is used in the entry-level model and leather is standard in the top trim, whereas the entry RAV4 features cloth and the top-tier Limited features leatherette. Mazda Wins on Passenger Space, But Toyota Wins on Cargo Space Credit: Erica Mueller The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid is a tad longer than the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, about 5″, and that extra room is translated into more passenger space though not more cargo space. In total, the CX-50 Hybrid has 81.5″ of front and rear seat legroom, while the RAV4 Hybrid has 78.8″, a subtle difference that may not matter to most buyers, however those with kids in car seats should measure carefully to ensure they have enough space. Where buyers may wish for more space is in the cargo area. The RAV4 Hybrid has 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space, while the CX-50 has about 6 fewer cubic feet at 31.4 cubic feet. Again, this is some thing buyers should consider if it’s a concern; the small differences in cargo and passenger space can be due to things like wheel wells, under floor storage and movable front seats and ultimately may not matter. What You Get in the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited Credit: Erica Mueller The top Hybrid Limited trim in the RAV4 lineup features many of the same features as the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid: 14 paint choices including two-tone paint choices 8″ or 10” multimedia touch screen display with voice assistance 7 trims priced from $31,900-$40,205 Premium audio Heated and vented front seats Wireless apple CarPlay and Android Auto SofTex upholstery Add a smart key, wireless phone charger, surround view camera, $1,025 Add a panoramic sunroof, $500 Total price with options: $41,730 before destination charge What You Get in the Mazda CX-50 Premium Plus Credit: Scotty Reiss Mazda’s packaging adds some nice features as standard and eliminates the need to add options. Here’s how the Premium Plus model shakes out: 6 paint choices Leather seating and trim Heated and vented front seats Head Up Display Panoramic sunroof Wireless apple CarPlay and Android Auto Wireless phone charger Keyless entry Soul Red Crystal paint $595 Total price: $40,645 before destination charge As with anything, which one is better depends on your perspective. Toyota’s RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition could be the best choice for those who spend a lot of time outdoors and on light trails. The CX-50 Hybrid Preferred may be the ultimate for those who need a good hybrid for long commutes but don’t want to splurge on leather and a sunroof. Either way, you can’t go wrong; you’ll get one of the best engine options on the road and the car that surrounds it is simply all about choice. Incidentally, Moderna (NASDAQ:) is so oversold on a monthly timeframe, it should be on your radar. How well is technical analysis (price) working right now? Looking right first, the chart of XLV shows the breakout over the 50-DMA back in early January. If you are still not convinced our calendar ranges are amazing, look how that phase change perfectly corresponds with a breakout over the January 6-month calendar range! Plus, another one of our incredible indicators, Real Motion showed a bullish divergence. The chart on the left is IBB Biotechnology or what I call Big Brother of the Family as we all look to pharma to help and protect us. Like XLV, Real Motion indicated a bullish divergence in momentum. Exactly like XLV, that phase change over the 50-DMA corresponded with the January calendar range high. Now both are trading above their 200-DMAs. Plus, both are outperforming the benchmark. I will say it again, technicals rule and fundamentals drool.
