Lawsuit accuses UC of illegally giving admissions preference to ****** and Latino students
Lawsuit accuses UC of illegally giving admissions preference to ****** and Latino students
A federal lawsuit accuses the University of California of illegally considering race when accepting new students, alleging that the system’s long-term growth of ****** and Latino enrollment would not be possible under a state law prohibiting the use of race in admissions and a Supreme Court ruling that struck down affirmative action.
The lawsuit was filed Monday in California’s Central District federal court on behalf of Asian American and white students who are considering applying to UC campuses as first-year applicants, transfers or law students. It alleges that UC gives “discriminatory preferences to non-Asian racial minorities” in violation of Proposition 209, the Constitution’s equal protection clause and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which says groups that receive federal funding cannot racially discriminate.
On Tuesday, a UC representative said officials had not been served with the suit.

“If served, we will vigorously defend our admission practices. We believe this to be a meritless suit that seeks to distract us from our mission to provide California students with a world class education,” the UC statement said.
“Since the consideration of race in admissions was banned in California in 1996, the University of California has adjusted its admissions practices to comply with the law. We stand by our admission policies and our record of expanding access for all qualified students. The UC undergraduate admissions application collects students’ race and ethnicity for statistical purposes only. This information is not shared with application reviewers and is not used for admission.”
Lawyers representing the plaintiff, Students Against Racial Discrimination, include those from America First Legal, which was founded by President Trump’s deputy chief of staff for policy, Stephen Miller. The group is also represented by Jonathan Mitchell, the former solicitor general of Texas.
UC, like all public educational institutions in the state, is barred from considering race in admissions under Proposition 209. The 1996 ban prompted a drop in admissions of ****** and Latino students at UCLA and UC Berkeley — the two most competitive UC schools. Their admission numbers rebounded as the university developed more holistic admissions practices and outreach to college counselors, high schools and nonwhite communities.
The 2023 Supreme Court ruling overturning affirmative action led to sharp declines at dozens of elite universities in admissions of ****** and Latino students. But UC has touted its campus-by-campus enrollment of nonwhite groups, which has remained roughly the same or has grown. UCLA has significantly boosted its ****** and Latino student applications and enrollment after more than 25 years of targeted outreach.

Over the years, UC has moved from using an “academic index” based on test scores and GPA for admissions to a comprehensive review that considers 13 factors, including GPA, the rigor of coursework, talents and life experiences. Admissions directors stress that applicants are not compared with all others across the board but more directly with peers in their schools or similar socioeconomic circumstances. Most selective universities also use holistic review, including USC.
The lawsuit said UC’s holistic process moves away “from objective criteria towards more subjective assessments of the overall appeal of individual candidates.”
Students Against Racial Discrimination was formed last fall and is led by legal scholars including Richard Sander, a UCLA law professor and longtime opponent of affirmative action. It models itself after Students for Fair Admissions, the nonprofit that successfully won its suit at the Supreme Court against Harvard’s affirmative action program.
Though UC does not directly use racial data in admissions, Sander said in an interview that he believes the university employs “socioeconomic data,” such as information on racial demographics and income levels in geographic areas, as a proxy for race, and uses other measures in its holistic review of applicants that are akin to racial preferences.
“There is abundant evidence that underrepresented minorities benefited when the University of California was reasonably compliant with Prop. 209 during the first decade after Prop. 209’s passage. … The university ignored this evidence and reintroduced ******** racial preferences during the late 2000s and 2010s to virtue-signal rather than to advance legitimate educational goals,” Sander alleged.

Since the proposition passed, the number of UC applications has increased, resulting in lower admission rates for all in the competitive system. The lawsuit alleges UC campuses illegally use race in considering applications because admission rates for ****** and Latino applicants have declined less than those for all students over time.
In 2010, UC Berkeley admitted 13% of ****** Californians who applied compared with 21% of all Californian applicants, the lawsuit says. By 2023, that gap had narrowed; the admission rate for ****** Californians was 10%, just 2% lower than the overall admission rate among Californians. The suit describes similar patterns at other campuses.
Although the lawsuit claims Asian Americans are harmed by UC admission practices, they have long had the highest admission rates among first-year Californians compared with other racial and ethnic groups systemwide. In fall 2024, UC admitted 76.6% of Asian American applicants compared with 68% of Latinos, 65% of whites and 60% of ****** students.
Asian Americans also make up the largest proportion of UC undergraduates at 36.3%, even though they account for 19% of California high school graduates who met UC admission requirements. Asian Americans also had the highest admission rate at UC Berkeley, at 16.3%; at UCLA, their admission rate was 10.4%, compared with 10.6% for ****** students.
The growth in Latinos admitted to UC campuses reflects at least in part the larger number of qualified applicants. The number of Latino graduates from California high schools who met UC admission requirements — a 3.0 GPA and completion of a series of college-preparatory classes with at least a C grade — grew to 108,145 in 2023-24 from 87,275 in 2016-17, according to state Department of Education data. The number of qualified ****** graduates dipped slightly, to 8,998 from 9,174 during that same time *******.

The suit also asked for the university to be more forthcoming in the data it releases on its admission practices. UC compiles annual reports about admissions and enrollment, including gender, race, ******* orientation and other factors, and campuses also separately release information.
The suit alleges race-based admission practices at UC harm admitted “Hispanic and ****** students who are often placed at a significant academic disadvantage, and thus experience worse outcomes, because of the university’s use of racial preferences.”
Sander elaborates on the theory in “Mismatch,” a book in which he argues that less-qualified racial minorities are put at a disadvantage when admitted to competitive colleges because they are up against more qualified students and fall behind.
Patricia Gándara, an education and admissions expert who is the director of the UCLA Civil Rights Project, said Sander’s arguments and the suit “simply do not add up.”
“UC has done an admirable job of figuring out how to not use race but to admit a diverse group of students. I really don’t think that these plaintiffs can prove that race is being used,” Gándara said.
She pointed out, by example, that more than half of high school graduates in California are Latino, yet they make up a significantly smaller portion of UC admissions.
“Just looking at the numbers themselves, it is nowhere close to proportionate,” Gándara said. “UC is clear about what it looks at, and that can include a variety of different kinds of diversity outside of race.”
Gándara also believes Sander’s “mismatch” theory is wrong.
“When students are placed in more demanding circumstances, those students rise to the occasion,” she said. “It is not being accepted to a more demanding university that leaves students behind.”

Edward Blum, the founder of the Students for Fair Admissions, said the California suit marked the next chapter in the legal fight over race in college admissions.
“The question is, if UC systems are saying they are not using racial preferences and classifications, what are they doing?” Blum said. “What has caused in their policies the slow but steady growth in underrepresented minorities at the more competitive UC schools? … What are they using as a racial proxy or classification?”
UC’s fall 2024 enrollment data, released last month, showed year-to-year gains among several racial and ethnic groups. After Asian Americans, Latinos were the second-largest group, growing to represent 26.7% systemwide. White students were down slightly, to 19.8%. ****** students made up 4.8% of enrollment — a slight increase — for a total of 11,257.
Mitchell, the former Texas solicitor general, said he planned to file lawsuits against additional universities but did not specify which ones.
“Universities continue to defy the law by using race and sex preferences in student admissions and faculty hiring,” Mitchell said. “We will keep suing them until they adopt colorblind admissions and rid themselves of every last vestige of these odious and discriminatory practices.”

Google Expands Gemini 2.0 Rollout With Flash Thinking, Agentic and Pro Models
Google Expands Gemini 2.0 Rollout With Flash Thinking, Agentic and Pro Models
Google announced the availability of several Gemini 2.0 artificial intelligence (AI) models on Wednesday. The Mountain View-based tech giant is rolling out its Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental AI model to mobile apps and the web client. Alongside this, an agentic version of the AI model is also being rolled out that can interact with certain apps. The company is also releasing an experimental version of Gemini 2.0 Pro to paid subscribers. Additionally, a lite version of the 2.0 Flash is also being rolled out as a public preview.
Google Rolling Out Multiple Gemini 2.0 Series AI models
In a blog post, the tech giant detailed all the different models currently being released to users. Some of these are available to the free users of Gemini, some only to the paid subscribers, and others are exclusively available to developers.
The most notable among these is the Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking, a reasoning-focused model comparable to the DeepSeek-R1 and OpenAI’s o1 models. It was first released in December 2024, but so far it could only be accessed from Google’s AI Studio.
Now, the company is rolling out the model to all Gemini app and website users. The new AI model will be available via the model selector option at the top of the interface. Gadgets 360 staff members have not seen the model yet, however, it should be available globally in the coming days. Notably, it is unclear whether the free tier will face any rate limits for using the Thinking model.
Alongside, the tech giant is also making an agentic version of the 2.0 Flash Thinking available to users. This model can interact with apps such as YouTube, Google Search, and Google Maps. With this integration, users should be able to ask Gemini to complete certain tasks on these apps. The extent of its ability is currently not known.
For Gemini Advanced users, Google is rolling out an experimental version of Gemini 2.0 Pro, the high-performance frontier model of the 2.0 series. The model is said to be good at breaking down complex problems as well as in coding and mathematics-related tasks. This is the tech giant’s most advanced model, with a context window of 2 million tokens. The application programming interface (API) of the model will also be able to call tools such as Google Search and code execution. It will also be available in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.
Developers will now be able to access Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite. The company said it offers better performance than the 1.5 Flash while retaining the speed and cost. It has a context window of one million tokens and accepts multimodal input. In addition, Google is also rolling out the 2.0 Flash model to developers via the Gemini API. Currently, it can handle text-based tasks, and the company will add image generation and text-to-speech capabilities in the future.
Both of these models will also be available in the Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.

Mum of woman murdered and dumped in Sydney bushland shares harrowing statement
Mum of woman murdered and dumped in Sydney bushland shares harrowing statement
The mother of a “strong and determined” woman who was murdered by her partner in Sydney’s northwest says she asks herself every day if her “senseless” death could have been prevented.
Vincent Carlino, 39, appeared at the King St Supreme Court in Sydney on Thursday, supported by family, when sentencing submissions and a victim impact statement were read.
Carlino pleaded guilty last year to the ******* of his girlfriend Shereen Kumar.
He was arrested in July 2022 at his Dural home in Sydney’s northwest just hours after police discovered Ms Kumar’s body wrapped in plastic in bushland off Laurie Rd.

Carlino reported his partner missing to police, claiming he was “extremely worried” about her wellbeing when she left home for a walk in her pyjamas and did not return.
Officers spent days searching the surrounding area for any trace of Ms Kumar before they ultimately made the gruesome discovery on September 10, 2022.
Carlino and Ms Kumar had a tumultuous relationship, and on the day she died, the pair argued and Carlino called her 123 times in 42 minutes, according to the agreed facts.
In the Supreme Court on Thursday, Ms Kumar’s mother Roshni read a harrowing victim impact statement, telling the court her daughter’s death had “left a void” in their hearts.
“She was everything to our family, she was our world,” she said of the mother of two.
“Her sudden death shattered my husband and our life, leaving a void … my heart is broken and aches every day.
“We are no longer the same people we once were.
“The pain will stay with us for the rest of our lives.”
Her mother said Ms Kumar’s life had been “stolen” due to an act of “cruel and senseless violence”.
“Her children have been left without a mother and our family has been left broken,” she said.
“I keep asking myself if I had still been living with her and the family could I have prevented this?
“I don’t know if I will ever know the truth.”
Ms Kumar’s mother also shared details of the last day she spent with her daughter, just three days before her death.
“It was a normal, happy day,” she said.
“I never imagined it would be the last time that I’d see her.”
Ms Kumar and Carlino lived together in Dural after reconciling from a break-up, according to police. The pair had been seeing each other intermittently since April 2020.
The couple owned a popular dog walking business together. Ms Kumar also worked as a part-time model and had featured in *********** and international magazines.
The court was told how Ms Kumar, and her family moved to Australia more than 20 years ago and both Ms Kumar and her sister Nikki had gone on to study at university.
“She was incredibly strong, independent and determined to succeed,” her mother said.
“She had big dreams, like becoming a veterinarian, and we were so proud of her.”
Carlino is due to appear in court again on April 7 for a sentence hearing.

Wembanyama-Fox combo off to winning start in NBA
Dyson Daniels got a close first-up look at the new Victor Wembanyama-De’Aaron Fox combination as his Atlanta Hawks were pipped 126-125 by the San Antonio Spurs in an NBA thriller.
Former Sacramento Kings point guard Fox teamed with 7-foot-3 centre Wembanyama for the first time since being traded as he debuted for the Spurs in Wednesday night’s game in Atlanta.
They are off to a positive start after Fox scored 24 points and matched his season high with 13 assists and Wembanyama’s go-ahead free throw with 2.4 seconds remaining gave the Spurs (22-26) victory.
“He (Fox) just brings a lot to the table for us,” said reigning NBA rookie of the year Wembanyama, who added 24 points.
“Our goals for the season are even more attainable. We get to use all our strengths and we just added a big strength.”
Trae Young had Young had 32 points with 12 assists for Atlanta (23-28) while *********** starter Daniels was typically productive with 19 points, seven assists, eight rebounds and two steals.
Fox also had five rebounds and three steals.
“When I came in everybody told me to be myself and not to come in and try to fit in,” Fox said, adding he was impressed by his new teammates. “That’s why I think this group can be special.”
In Oklahoma City, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 50 points to lead the NBA-leading hosts to a 140-109 home win over the Phoenix Suns. It was the third 50-plus-point game of Gilgeous-Alexander’s career, all of them coming over the past seven games.
The Suns, who were playing without Kevin Durant who was listed as being sidelined due to an ankle injury amid trade rumours ahead of the Thursday trade deadline.

What Wall Street is saying
What Wall Street is saying
Alphabet (GOOGL) is now in the penalty box.
Shares tanked 8% in pre-market trading on Wednesday following a fourth quarter revenue miss. The culprit? Softer than expected sales in cloud services (similar to rival Microsoft’s (MSFT) latest earnings) and a deceleration in the business from the preceding quarter.
CFO Anat Ashkenazi pinned the blame on the earnings call on being “capacity constrained” in the cloud, pointing to still strong demand. But investors aren’t having it, opting to dump the stock and also voicing concern on $75 billion in capital expenditure plans for 2025 — well above whisper numbers into the quarter of around $60 billion.
The concerns overshadow growth in the company’s lucrative search business, which rose 13% in the quarter. YouTube ad sales also drew praise from the Street, up 13.8%.
Here’s what Wall Street is saying about Alphabet’s squishy quarter. Keep an eye on the Yahoo Finance analysis section of Alphabet’s ticker page — it’s likely that analysts will lower their sales and profit estimates after the cloud-computing letdown in the fourth quarter and hearty capex guidance.
“We maintain our Neutral rating and $200 price target following disappointing 4Q24 earnings that were underscored by a miss on top-line expectations and decelerating Google Cloud growth. Alphabet is seeing benefits to the integration of AI throughout their product portfolio, from Search to Android to Google Cloud, such as the use of AI Overviews in Search which is increasing user satisfaction and driving higher usage. Management cited tougher comps and capacity constrains as headwinds to the Google Cloud business this past quarter, but did not comment further.”
“Alphabet reported a decent but overall mixed quarterly result/guidance with search and YouTube revenue nicely higher than expected, services operating income ahead of expectation, while key cloud revenue/operating income coming in light and showed signs of deceleration (that management attributed to a lack of data center capacity) which drove 2025 capital expenditures well ahead of our ($58 billion) and consensus expectations at $75 billion. Slower than expected growth at the key future revenue driver for the company and much higher capex to drive that growth is a tough combo which is why the stock is, reasonably, selling off in the aftermarket. Given 15-20% cloud penetration of enterprise we feel comfortable about the long-term upside from the move to the cloud, which should be enhanced by the much more rapid development of AI, but Alphabet management is likely going to be in “show-me” mode that 4Q cloud results were a hiccup on the way to much higher revenue/operating income growth.”
Story Continues
“We believe the biggest pushbacks to the quarter come around 3 C’s: 2025 Capex, Cloud revenue trajectory, and 4Q/2025 costs/margin expansion potential. Google now expects 2025 capex of ~$75 billion — up 43% following a 63% increase in 2024 — as it continues to invest in AI infrastructure including servers, data centers, and networking equipment. Cloud revenue grew 30% — decelerating from +35% in 3Q — and Google noted that it is capacity constrained as demand outstrips supply, in theory a good problem to have. In terms of costs & margins, 4Q operating income margin of 32.1% was a bit light, but still reflected 465bps of year over year margin expansion (+325bps excl. 1x items). The ******* question is whether Google can continue to expand margins in 2025 given likely slower revenue growth and accelerating depreciation. Our 2025 operating income comes down 2% to $126 billion & now assumes a more modest 50bps of margin expansion.
“Alphabet’s Q4 report keeps the AI search bear case at bay but it was no match for an unexpected cloud miss and significantly raised capex outlook nearly 30% above Street. Lowering revs modestly/raising EPS estimates but lowering our free cash flow estimates given the capex guide. Would view this model reset as an opportunity. The company’s AI rollout is accelerating with search demonstrating improvements as opposed to disruption (consistent with our checks coming in), capacity constraints which likely explain the cloud miss should ease, Google I/O sets up for a bevy of new AI product announcements and management just lowered the bar on margins given capex and headcount commentary. No doubt the impact of AI for Alphabet will continue to be hotly debated but intellectual consistency across the space would suggest Alphabet’s playing offense on AI and we’d agree.”

Well-known tipster Digital Chat Station posted details about the design and hardware of the Vivo X200 Ultra on Weibo. As per the post (now deleted), the handset will feature a 6.8-inch 2K LTPO OLED display with minimal bezels and slightly curved edges. On the rear, it is said to flaunt a circular-shaped camera island compiling a 1/1.28-inch 50-megapixel main camera, a 1/1.28-inch 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 1/1.4-inch type 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera.
The tipster claimed to have used the phone and stated that the prototypes of Vivo X200 Ultra have an ultra wide camera at 1x in the viewfinder, while the main camera is 1.5x. The arrangement of camera sensors in the module is said to remain unchanged from the previous model.
Vivo X200 Ultra is tipped to come as a higher-end sibling of Vivo X200 and X200 Pro. Both models were launched in China in October and have since made their way to global markets as well. Vivo is likely to launch the Vivo X200 Ultra in April. The Vivo X100 Ultra went official back in May last year.
The Vivo X200 Ultra is tipped to come with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, paired with up to 24GB LPDDR5X RAM and 2TB UFS 4.0 storage. It is likely to have an IP68/IP69-rated build and a 6,000mAh battery with 90W wired and 50W wireless support.

Why $250k payday may limit Costa’s derby involvement
Why $250k payday may limit Costa’s derby involvement
Ufuk Talay has hinted that prized import Douglas Costa will have limited game-time in the Sydney derby as the Sky Blues look to juggle their A-League Men campaign and go on a deep run in the Asian Champions League 2.
Western Sydney Wanderers star Juan Mata is in doubt for Saturday’s encounter due to a hamstring injury.
Costa was given a cameo in last week’s 4-1 win over Adelaide as he worked his way back from a hamstring injury. But Talay is still set to take a cautious approach with the Brazilian international.
Sydney host Bangkok United on Wednesday in the first leg of their round-of-16 ACL2 tie where qualification for the quarter-finals would net the Sky Blues $A250,000 in prize money.
If Talay’s men were to go on and match the Central Coast Mariners, who won last year’s ACL2 when it was known as the AFC Cup, Sydney would secure close to $A4 million
“It’s not an easy one to balance with Douglas,” Sydney boss Talay said.
“The medical staff have obviously capped him with certain minutes within the game.
“But also I’m thinking one step further and we have a game on Wednesday, a very important ACL2 clash that we need to play as well.
“It’s one of those ones where I know Douglas wants to play – if I ask Douglas to play 90 minutes, he’ll say yes.
“But the reality is, we want to use him in the ACL2 as well.”
While Costa’s minutes may be limited, centre back Alex Popovic remains sidelined.
Mid-season signing Alex Grant and Socceroos leftback Joel King are both “touch and go”, according to the Sydney boss.
Talay said it was a shame the Wanderers would likely be without Mata as Sydney seek to complete a first-ever derby clean sweep by winning all three games in the same season.
Sydney, who sit fifth, can put a real dent in the eighth-placed Wanderers’ top six hopes.
“I think it would add value to the game, it’d be great if we could have Douglas and Juan Mata start because it’s a great spectacle for the fans,” Talay said.
“The derby is always exciting… it’s another game within the competition and we need to pick up three points because we know the direction we want to head.”

Trump Administration Deepens Pressure on Federal Workers to Resign
Trump Administration Deepens Pressure on Federal Workers to Resign
President Trump’s administration deepened its pressure campaign on government employees to resign before a Thursday deadline, rattling and angering a civil service steeling itself for a prolonged battle with Elon Musk and his ongoing foray into the federal bureaucracy.
With hours dwindling for workers to decide whether or not to quit, agency officials held last-minute meetings to walk their teams through a dizzying barrage of emails detailing the offer to leave their jobs — and to urge them to take the deal.
The resignation push is part of a broader campaign by Mr. Trump and Mr. Musk to drastically cut the size of the federal government. On Wednesday, Mr. Musk proudly proclaimed his team’s advance into another federal agency, announcing that his so-called Department of Government Efficiency, an arm of the White House overseeing downsizing efforts, would “make rapid safety upgrades” to the nation’s air traffic control system.
The announcement came as investigators continued their probe into the Jan. 29 ****** of an Army ****** Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines passenger jet that killed 67 people.
Mr. Musk’s team was also spotted at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, where they obtained access to the agency’s computer systems to search for programs and staff tied to diversity policies that the Trump administration has vowed to stamp out, according to people familiar with the situation and screenshots viewed by The New York Times.
The access came as some climate data disappeared from NOAA’s website, prompting concern that political staff had interfered. Project 2025, a conservative think tank’s policy blueprint for Republicans, identified NOAA as “one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry” and called for the agency to be dismantled. An agency spokesman said the web pages were unavailable because of scheduled maintenance.
The Trump administration said that tens of thousands of workers had already taken the administration’s offer to quit in exchange for a promise to be paid through the end of September — a proposal sent last week in an email with the subject line “Fork in the Road.”
On Wednesday, officials made clear that civil servants faced an uncertain future if they did not leave.
At the Education Department on Wednesday, employees who had not accepted the offer were told that the agency was considering reducing its departmental footprint.
The General Services Administration, an agency that manages the federal government’s real estate portfolio, has been particularly vocal about looming work force reductions in recent days.
In an email to some employees on Tuesday, Michael Peters, the commissioner of the agency’s public buildings service division, warned that the G.S.A. would be a “substantially smaller organization in the future.”
Mr. Peters also said the agency would take measures to significantly scale back its building portfolio, excluding space occupied by the Defense Department.
“It is clear that the footprint (leased and owned) of non-D.O.D. federal building space should be reduced by at least 50 percent,” Mr. Peters wrote.
And the Office of Personnel Management stressed to employees across the government that the clock was ticking.
“There will NOT be an extension of this program,” the agency wrote in an email on Tuesday to federal workers, using bold font to emphasize that time was running out on the offer, which expires at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday.
Unions have cautioned members not to accept the offer because they could not guarantee the Trump administration would follow through on its promises, and questioned the very legality of the proposal, which relies on the promise of funding that has not yet been appropriated by Congress.
“There is so much uncertainty right now,” said Andrew Huddleston, a spokesman for the American Federation of Government Employees. “But this is part and parcel of what the administration is doing — scare tactics and threats that jobs will be politicized or eliminated to cajole and force employees out of the civil service.”
Even if the administration was able to follow through with the terms of the deferred resignation, many workers who spoke to The Times said they were likely to decline it because of the sense of mission they feel to serve the American public for as long as possible.
Many employees simply expressed disgust and anger at the push to drive them out.
“I have a deep sense of alienation and abandonment here,” said one worker who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of retaliation. “This is an unreasonable situation with unreasonable people.”
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, told reporters on Wednesday that Mr. Trump had campaigned on the promise “to look at the receipts of this federal government and ensure it’s accountable to American taxpayers.”
“That’s all that is happening here,” she continued.
Some employees sought ways to push back.
On Wednesday, workers at the Technology Transformation Services, the tech-focused arm of the General Services Administration, made known their displeasure with the “Fork in the Road” offer during an organization-wide meeting with their new leader, a former employee at Mr. Musk’s automaker Tesla, according to people familiar with the gathering.
In the meeting, Thomas Shedd, a former Tesla engineer who was appointed to lead technology efforts at the G.S.A., attempted to assuage worries about the deferred resignation plan and told workers to “read as much as you can” about the offer, according to an audio recording provided to The New York Times. He also urged federal workers to review information posted on the website of the Office of Personnel Management.
His assurances did not appear to work. Employees in the tech division rained down spoon emojis in the chat that accompanied the video meeting, which was watched by more than 600 people, according to photos of the chat screen provided to The Times and three people familiar with the reaction. Some employees also added spoon emojis to their statuses on Slack, a workplace communication app.
On Wednesday afternoon, several hundred demonstrators gathered outside the Labor Department to protest the Trump administration’s moves. Printed signs read “Stop the billionaire takeover” and “Nobody elected Musk.”
“What he’s trying to do is essentially destroy our agencies, destroy the social safety net and then take all of that hard-earned wealth of working-class people from across the country and redistribute it to his billionaire friends and his own company,” said Representative Robert Garcia, Democrat of California.
Federal employee unions said the effort to cut the work force had led more federal employees to join their ranks. The American Federation of Government Employees, which started the year with about 300,000 dues-paying members, said it had welcomed more than 13,000 new workers in January. More than 4,300 federal employees enrolled in the first five days of February — a month in which union membership had held steady or dipped slightly in each of the past three years.
Ryan Mac, Kate Conger, Ana Swanson Madeleine Ngo, Zach Montague, Kate Kelly, Rebecca Davis O’Brien, Mark Walker and Chris Cameron contributed reporting.

North Las Vegas police identify officer killed in deadly shooting
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — North Las Vegas police identified the officer killed in a deadly Tuesday shooting as Officer Jason Roscow, 46.
Roscow spent 17 years with the North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD), according to a news release. He worked for the NLVPD Traffic Division before returning to patrol in 2024.
“During his tenure with the traffic division, Officer Roscow was recognized with the exemplary service award, an honor given for a singular accomplishment of substance, achieved under adverse and difficult conditions, though without risk to personal safety,” NLVPD officials said. “His dedication to duty and resilience in challenging situations earned him the respect of his colleagues and the community he served.”
Donations to Roscow’s family are asked to be directed through the Injured Police Officer’s Fund at Lexicon Bank. The account number is #1000010630. Law enforcement officials said the account is the only way to ensure the donations end up with the correct people.
The shooting occurred in a neighborhood near West Lone Mountain Road and Camino Al Norte, in a neighborhood located near Craig Ranch Park.
According to police, Roscow responded to a report of a person who pointed a gun at another person. The person with the gun ignored the officer’s commands and shot Officer Roscow. The suspect was also killed.

Former Matildas stars call for embattled Sam Kerr to remain Australia’s captain
Former Matildas stars call for embattled Sam Kerr to remain Australia’s captain
Matildas greats have leapt to the defence of Sam Kerr, saying the embattled star should remain captain of Australia despite being on trial for the charge of racially aggravated abuse of a police officer.
Kerr, who remains sidelined with a knee injury, has this week been in a London court, where video footage has been shown of her swearing and calling a policeman “stupid and white” following an earlier incident in a taxi on January 30, 2023.
Kerr said she was “embarrassed” watching the footage but denied she was “drunk and kicking off” in the back of the taxi.
Football Australia will wait until the trial’s completion to make a call on whether Kerr will be stripped of the Matildas captaincy.
However, former Matildas co-captain Kate Gill and national women’s team great Joey Peters are both adamant that Kerr should again wear the captain’s armband when she returns from injury.
“I just have full admiration for Sam Kerr and what she’s done throughout our game,” said Peters, who made 110 appearances for Australia between 1996 and 2009.
“What we’re hearing about the case, I don’t think it takes away anything from the quality person that she is.”
Peters said Kerr was a “disrupter” rather than a “nicey, nicey girl” by nature, and that had be embraced by the *********** football public.
“She has disrupted the world of football, and we can’t expect her to be quiet and sit back and be a ‘nicey and nicey girl’ because she’s not that at all on the pitch. She’s lethal, so for her to stick up for herself off the field, for me personally, I 100 per cent back her.
“I can’t imagine the pressure that she’s under with her public profile. She’s in this pressure cooker and delivered so much for our game and continues to do that, and we should hold her in the highest regard whatever happens, because we all make mistakes as humans.
“In Sam Kerr’s case, she’s an absolute champion of our game and should be treated as that in her home country for sure.
“It’s not that I don’t care what she’s (allegedly) done, but in this particular instance, we’ve got to protect her and cheer her on.”
Peters was surprised the police officer took offence to what Kerr said, saying Kerr was “quite right” with what she said.
“We’ve all heard plenty worse – I know I have. She’s quite right … even if she did say ‘white’ because it’s a privileged position,” Peters said.
Camera IconKerr’s future has Matildas captain has been questioned. Lachie Millard Credit: News Corp Australia
Gill, who made 86 appearances for the Matildas and led the team with Clare Polkinghorne in 2013 and 2014, said Kerr was an “exceptional human being”.
“She’s also the first person to acknowledge if she’s done something wrong and made a mistake,” said Gill, also a former co-chief executive of Professional Footballers Australia.
“She’s got morals about her, so it’s hard to question her from that kind of area.”
Gill said Kerr should “definitely” captain the Matildas again.
“It’s hard for us to all sit in judgment when we don’t have access to the full facts and understand what happened and how Sam was made to feel in that moment,” he said.
“There should be no reason why she shouldn’t captain her country.
“She wears her heart on her sleeve, she loves playing for her country, she loves captaining her country, and she’s given her some very inspirational and fantastic sporting moments.
“We shouldn’t forget that.”

Huawei chairman says 2024 revenue exceeded $118 billion
Huawei chairman says 2024 revenue exceeded $118 billion
SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Huawei’s chairman said on Wednesday that the tech company’s annual revenue exceeded 860 billion yuan ($118.27 billion) last year, as it continued to shake off the impact of U.S. sanctions and its consumer business returned to growth.
Liang Hua made the remarks at a forum in Guangzhou, according to a report by the Shenzhen Business Daily, which was confirmed by a Huawei spokesperson.
Annual revenue of 860 billion yuan would mark 22% year-on-year-growth from 2023, when Huawei reported 704.2 billion yuan in revenue. The company also reported its fastest growth in four years that year.
“In 2024, Huawei’s overall operations will meet expectations, ICT infrastructure will remain stable, consumer business will return to growth, and the smart car solution business will develop rapidly, with annual sales revenue exceeding 860 billion yuan,” Liang was quoted as saying.
Huawei’s consumer business has made a strong comeback since August 2023, when it launched new phones with locally-made chipsets that defied U.S. sanctions. Last year, it grabbed a 16% share of the ******** smartphone market, overtaking Apple, according to data from Canalys.
