Israel prepares for Gaza exodus in line with Donald Trump’s plan – National Israel prepares for Gaza exodus in line with Donald Trump’s plan – National Israel said on Thursday it has begun preparations for the departure of large numbers of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip in line with President Donald Trump’s plan for the territory. Officials meanwhile said Egypt has launched an diplomatic blitz behind the scenes to try and head off the plan. The Trump administration has already dialed back aspects of the proposal after it was widely rejected internationally, saying the relocation of Palestinians would be temporary. U.S. officials have provided few details about how or when the plan would be carried out. In a social media post on Thursday, Trump said Israel would turn Gaza over to the United States after the conflict and that no U.S. soldiers would be needed for his plan to redevelop it. The Palestinians have vehemently rejected Trump’s proposal, fearing that Israel would never allow refugees to return. Egypt has warned that an expulsion of Palestinians would destabilize the region and undermine its peace treaty with Israel, a cornerstone of stability and American influence for decades. Story continues below advertisement 1:31 Garbage piles spreading disease, adding to woes of Palestinians returning home to war-torn Gaza Saudi Arabia, another key U.S. ally, has also rejected any mass transfer of Palestinians and says it will not normalize relations with Israel — a key goal of the Trump administration — without the creation of a ************ state that includes Gaza. Trump and Israeli officials have depicted the proposed relocation from conflict-ravaged Gaza as voluntary, but the Palestinians have universally expressed their determination to remain in their homeland. Trump and Israeli officials have not said how they would respond if Palestinians refuse to leave. But Human Rights Watch and other groups say the plan, if implemented, would amount to “ethnic cleansing,” the forcible relocation of the civilian population of an ethnic group from a geographic area. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said he has ordered the military to make preparations to facilitate the emigration of large numbers of Palestinians from Gaza through land crossings as well as “special arrangements for exit by sea and air.” Story continues below advertisement There were no immediate signs of such preparations on the ground. 3:11 Palestinians reject U.S. plan to take over Gaza: “Trump will fail” Egypt wages a behind-the-scenes campaign Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has not publicly responded to Trump’s stunning proposal that most of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million Palestinians be relocated and the United States take charge of rebuilding the territory. Israel’s 15-month campaign against the militant ****** group had reduced large parts of Gaza to rubble before a fragile ceasefire took hold last month. Story continues below advertisement But Egyptian officials, speaking Wednesday on condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door talks, said Cairo has made clear to the Trump administration and Israel that it will resist any such proposal, and that the peace deal with Israel — which has stood for nearly half a century — is at risk. One official said the message has been delivered to the Pentagon, the State Department and members of the U.S. Congress. A second official said it has also been conveyed to Israel and its Western European allies, including Britain, France and Germany. A Western diplomat in Cairo, also speaking anonymously because the discussions have not been made public, confirmed receiving the message from Egypt through multiple channels. The diplomat said Egypt was very serious and viewed the plan as a threat to its national security. The diplomat said Egypt rejected similar proposals from the Biden administration and European countries early in the conflict, which was sparked by ******’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack into southern Israel. The earlier proposals were broached privately, while Trump announced his plan at a White House press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He did not rule out the deployment of U.S. troops there. Story continues below advertisement U.S. officials later appeared to walk it back, saying the relocation of Palestinians would be temporary and that Trump had not committed to putting American boots on the ground or spending American tax dollars in Gaza. The Egyptian officials said their government does not believe the Palestinians need to be relocated for reconstruction to proceed and is committed to the creation of a ************ state in Gaza, the West Bank and east Jerusalem, territories Israel seized in the 1967 ******** war. 2:04 Trump officials try to walk back Gaza takeover comments Israel’s government is opposed to ************ statehood and has said it will maintain open-ended security control over both Gaza and the occupied West Bank. How to Run DeepSeek R1 on your Raspberry Pi 5 How to Run DeepSeek R1 on your Raspberry Pi 5 You can’t have missed the seismic event that saw Nvidia lose $589 billion in market cap as confidence in AI took a hit after DeepSeek claimed that its open source R1 model could provide rival OpenAI’s o1 model performance, with 11x less compute to train its latest models. The fallout from this is still being debated, but it has certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Before we delve too deeply into this how to, let’s manage expectations. Yes you can run DeepSeek on your Raspberry Pi but it is CPU bound so don’t expect your queries to complete in a few seconds. No official AI accelerator HAT or addon will currently accelerate the model. The only means is to connect up a GPU to the Raspberry Pi 5’s PCIe connector, likely using one of Pineboard’s Hat UPCIty Lite boards and an external power supply. This means that the Raspberry Pi 5 is at a disadvantage to my desktop PC which has an Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU. When ollama runs, it checks for a GPU and if found, it will use it. So my RTX 4070 is doing all of the work. The Test Running the R1:8b locally, I wanted a simple test, and the first thing that came to my mind was writing some Python code. The prompt being: “write a python script to ask the user their name, save it to a variable called username, and then greet the user by their name 100 times.” (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) How would I normally tackle this? Three lines of Python code, one to capture the user input to a variable, then two lines to create a for loop that prints the personalized greeting. It’s basic beginner Python that I taught to hundreds of students, so how would an AI tackle it? username = input("What is your name?: ") for i in range(100): print("Hello",username) DeepSeek on the Raspberry Pi 5 – YouTube Watch On Swipe to scroll horizontally Test Machine Specifications Time Taken Raspberry Pi 5 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, Broadcom BCM2712 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU 8:01.08 minutes AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 32GB DDR4 RAM AMD Ryzen 5 5600X hexa-core 3.7 / 4.6 GHz CPU Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU 16.12 seconds The Raspberry Pi 5’s code was as follows Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. username = input().strip for _ in range(100): print(f”Hello, {username}”) Capturing the user input and then sanitizing it before assigning it to the function is a smart move. The strip will remove any white space from the captured string. Printing the greeting using f-strings is a more recent means to format the output. That’s a bit redundant in this scenario, but I would be pleased to see a student try this approach. My gripe with this code is that there is no prompt for the user to type, hence in the video there is a short delay. Thankfully the PC did not replicate this issue. On the PC, DeepSeek produced this code. username = input(“Enter your name: “) for _ in range(100): print(f”Hello, {username}!”) The user input is captured and saved to the variable, and we have an input prompt for the user to respond to. The rest is the same as on the Raspberry Pi 5, with just an extra “!” to emphasize the greeting. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) You can’t miss the time difference between the PC and the Pi 5. All of this was offline, relying on the model and the CPU / GPU of the device it is being run on. The PC did everything in 16 seconds, but the Pi 5 hit 8 minutes! Heck the PC was done while the Pi 5 was still loading the model. But, running an LLM on a Raspberry Pi 5 is an interesting experiment, and worth spending a little time on, so lets install one onto a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB. Note, that the Raspberry Pi 5 8GB is really the lowest spec Pi 5 that we would attempt this on. You could try a 4GB Pi 5 with a tweaked model, but your mileage will vary! Setting up DeepSeek on the Raspberry Pi 5 via ollama To make things easier, we’ll be setting up DeepSeek via ollama, a free and open source tool that enables anyone to run large language models (LLMs) on their own machines. The model that we will be using is a distilled Llama model which fits into the 8GB of RAM afforded by our Raspberry Pi 5. The ollama team states that “DeepSeek team has demonstrated that the reasoning patterns of larger models can be distilled into smaller models, resulting in better performance compared to the reasoning patterns discovered through RL on small models.” Why are we using this model and not a “true” DeepSeek model? Simply because the deepseek-r1:671b model is 404GB in size, and it would clearly overwhelm the Raspberry Pi 5. Installation on the Raspberry Pi is a breeze thanks to ollama’s script. 1. Open a terminal and ensure that your Raspberry Pi 5 is running the latest software. sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade -y 2. Download and install the ollama install script. Normally, installing software using a script from the Internet is a major no no. We would never do this in a production environment. If you are curious, the install.sh can be saved to a file and the contents read before use. curl -fsSL | sh 3. Check the version number. Ours was 0.5.7 but yours may differ given the fast pace of LLM development. It is always handy to know what version number you have installed, should you need to log any issues or search for specific guidelines. ollama --version 4. Download and run DeepSeek-r1:8b. This is a distilled Llama model which fits into the 8GB of RAM afforded by our Raspberry Pi 5. ollama run deepseek-r1:8b 5. Wait for the download and install to finish. This can take some time at first, but subsequent loads should be much faster. 6. The user interface is simple, just type in a request / query and the LLM will interpret and respond. Slowly. 7. When you are done, you can either press CTRL + D or type /bye and press Enter to close the session. DeepSeek on the Raspberry Pi 5 is purely CPU bound. It cannot be used with any of the AI accelerator boards. If you have the knowledge and the equipment, it can be used with an GPU via the PCIe connector on the Raspberry Pi 5. We were unable to test this due to a lack of equipment, but the ever fearless Jeff Geerling is sure to test this in the near future. Eli Lilly to release weight loss drug retatrutide data in 2025 Eli Lilly to release weight loss drug retatrutide data in 2025 The Eli Lilly & Co. logo at the company’s Digital Health Innovation Hub facility in Singapore, on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024. Ore Huiying | Bloomberg | Getty Images Eli Lilly on Thursday said it expects to release data from a late-stage trial on its next-generation weight loss drug retatrutide later this year, which is a few months earlier than anticipated. The company expects to read out results from a study in people with obesity and osteoarthritis of the knee in 2025, according to fourth-quarter earnings slides on its website. Eli Lilly previously said that phase three study was expected to finish in February of 2026. Retatrutide is a key part of Eli Lilly’s drug pipeline that could help the company maintain its dominance in the blockbuster weight loss and diabetes treatment space and gain an edge over key competitor Novo Nordisk. Dubbed the “triple G” drug, retatrutide works by mimicking three hunger-regulating hormones: GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Feast for the Poor Quest Guide – How To Complete This KCD2 Side Quest Feast for the Poor Quest Guide – How To Complete This KCD2 Side Quest In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, you’ll eventually be offered a side quest with an interesting premise. You’ll need to break into a military encampment and steal King Sigismund’s prized sausages reserved exclusively for royalty. However, the camp is heavily guarded and you’ll be challenged whenever you walk towards the gates. Let’s talk about the solution for Feast for the Poor and figure out how to get the sausages from the camp in the easiest way possible. How to Solve Feast for the Poor Feast for the Poor seems like a simple enough quest at first blush, but it’s tricky. Even going into the camp at night spells trouble, as you’re almost guaranteed to be seen by the many guards patrolling the area. If you want to accept a challenge, you can dress in dark, light clothing and sneak into the camp after distracting a gate guard with a rock. Around the back of the camp (in the blue circle in the image below), you’ll find a barn with a window at the side of it – it’s quite visible. If you climb up into that window, you’ll find yourself in the loft of a hay barn, and from here, you can get the best access to the camp without being challenged by a guard: Blue = Entry, Green = Sausage Instead of picking around the camp looking for the sausages, you can just head to the green circle on my map above. It’s here that you’ll find a painted chest in a circular tent – that’s the box containing the sausages. Unfortunately, it’s a ‘very hard’ lock, so unless you have a high lockpicking skill, you’ll need to kill and loot a guard or pickpocket them for a set of keys. Once you’ve got the keys, you can get the sausages. Remember that the bonus objective is to leave a head of cabbage in the box, but it doesn’t have much of an impact on the outcome if you forget. Spoiler Note: If you wait until you complete the main campaign, the camp will no longer be off-limits, allowing you to walk in unchallenged and find the sausages. You’ll still need to get the keys or pick the lock, but at no point will guards demand you or attack you. Now that you’ve got the sausages, you can leave and pick up the next part of this quest. You’ll need to head into Kuttenberg and find people begging in the streets, giving them sausages and choosing who you want to name as the responsible donor. That’s how to complete Feast for the Poor in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 in a nutshell. Deliverance 2 but Not in a Way You Would Expect Deliverance 2 but Not in a Way You Would Expect Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has been out for just two days, and it’s already making waves for all the right reasons. From its stunning medieval world to its incredibly smooth performance at launch, Warhorse Studios’ latest masterpiece is proving that lightning can indeed strike twice. Medieval Bohemia: Where legends come to die… literally. | Image Credit: Warhorse Studios But amidst all the praise for this highly anticipated sequel, eagle-eyed players are discovering that the developers have peppered their medieval playground with some delightfully unexpected easter eggs. One such discovery has the gaming community buzzing, as it pays tribute to one of Elden Ring’s most legendary figures in a rather… morbid way. And while most games these days seem content to launch in a barely playable state, developer Warhorse Studios is showing the industry how it’s done, following in the footsteps of current “industry greats” like Larian Studios by delivering a polished experience right out of the gate— no day one patch needed. A fallen legend in medieval Bohemia Deep in the southwest region of Trosky in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, near a humble mill, lies a peculiar sight that Elden Ring fans will immediately recognize. A skeleton, its skull concealed within an unmistakable jar, rests eternally beside two discarded swords. For the uninitiated, this might seem like just another casualty of medieval warfare. But for those in the know, this is clearly a nod to Let Me Solo Her, the legendary player who became famous for helping countless others defeat one of Elden Ring‘s most notorious bosses, Malenia. The discovery sparked immediate recognition among players: Comment byu/szpitalosw from discussion inkingdomcome The original poster’s follow-up only confirmed what many suspected: Comment byu/szpitalosw from discussion inkingdomcome Some players couldn’t help but wonder about the implications of finding such a legendary warrior’s remains: Comment byu/szpitalosw from discussion inkingdomcome Finding a jar-headed warrior in 15th century Bohemia might seem a bit “jar”-ring (sorry), but Warhorse Studios has managed to tuck this tribute into their world with surprising finesse. Much like how they’ve woven historical details into every corner of Kuttenberg’s bustling streets, this fallen legend feels right at home among the medieval ruins—a clever nod that doesn’t sacrifice the game’s commitment to authenticity for the sake of a reference. A masterclass in game development No upscaling is required when your optimization is this good. | Image Credit: Warhorse Studios But this clever easter egg is just one small example of the care and attention that Warhorse Studios has poured into every aspect of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Players are already discovering numerous references scattered throughout the game: Comment byu/szpitalosw from discussion inkingdomcome Veterans of the series aren’t surprised by these thoughtful inclusions: Comment byu/szpitalosw from discussion inkingdomcome What’s truly remarkable, however, is how the game manages to deliver this massive, detail-rich world without the technical compromises that have become all too common in modern gaming. Unlike recent releases like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which mandates hardware-based ray tracing, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 proves that you don’t need to force technical requirements to create a visually stunning and performant game. This approach is directly at odds with the industry’s recent trend of releasing unoptimized games that rely heavily on day-one patches and high-end hardware requirements, or, if not, have to fall back on upscaling tech as a crutch. Warhorse Studios has instead focused on creating a game that runs beautifully across a wide range of systems while maintaining its gorgeous visuals and immersive medieval world. Have you discovered any other interesting Easter eggs in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2? Share your findings in the comments below! Syrian refugees killed in Swedish gunman’s attack on school Syrian refugees killed in Swedish gunman’s attack on school Joel Gunter & Paul Kirby In Orebro and London Reuters Candles and flowers have been left outside the school in memory of the victims of Tuesday’s attack Syria’s embassy to Stockholm says Syrians were among the 10 victims of a gunman who carried out the worst shooting in Swedish history, at a school in Orebro this week. The suspected gunman, named locally as 35-year-old Rickard Andersson, was killed in the attack, but police have not yet identified him and have not given a motive. The embassy’s announcement, on its Facebook page, was the first indication of who was killed in Tuesday’s attack at Risbergska school. It gave no details of the number of Syrians caught up in the attack, but said: “We offer our sincere condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims, including dear Syrian citizens, and to the friendly Swedish people.” Anna Bergkvist, the head of the police investigation, told the BBC that police could confirm only that people of multiple nationalities and ages were caught up in the attack. Salim Iskef, a 29-year-old Orthodox Christian who fled the war in Syria in 2015, has been named as one of the 10 victims of the shooting. Santa Maria church in Orebro said his life had ended tragically in the attack. Swedish reports said he had become a Swedish citizen and was due to get married in June. His aunt told Arabic-language website Alkompis that he had made a video-call to his mother to say he had been shot and asked her to look after his fiancée. Two Bosnian citizens are also among the victims, Bosnia’s ambassador has told Swedish daily Expressen. One was wounded and another was missing, he said. The Bosnian foreign ministry has expressed its condolences and spoken of Orebro’s large Bosnian community. Police in Orebro said the alarm was raised at 12:33 (11:33 GMT) on Tuesday and after about five minutes the first patrols had reached the school, which sits on a large education campus about 200km (124km) west of Stockholm. Regional police chief Lars Wiren told a news conference on Thursday that 130 police officers eventually reached the school. They faced what could only be described as an “inferno” when they entered the school buildings on Tuesday, he said: “Dead people, screams and smoke.” He spoke of a scene of chaos, with people running inside and outside a very large school that stretches out over about 17,000 sq m. Wiren told the BBC that there was no evidence bombs had been detonated, but said there was thick smoke that could have come from the suspect setting fires or smoke grenades. He said they believed the suspect had fired at police but that officers did not fire back. The gunman was found dead at the scene over an hour later. Police investigator Anna Bergkwist said that the suspect had killed himself. She confirmed that three guns were found at the scene next to the gunman, of a total of four known to be legally registered to the suspect. However, she refused to comment on the types of guns or ammunition used. Copyright Unknown Rickard Andersson, 35, has been named locally as the suspect, but that has not been confirmed by police Police remain tight-lipped about both the suspect and the possible motive behind the attack. Bergkwist explained that the delay in naming the suspect was because of the wait for DNA samples to be matched. Swedish police are usually cautious about naming suspects and would not normally do so ahead of charges being laid, but Bergkwist said they expected to make an exception in this case and release a name in the coming days. Risbergska school provides adult education for people aged over 20 who did not finish primary or secondary school, as well as Swedish classes for immigrants. Young residents in Orebro had already expressed fears of a racial element to the shooting, and the Syrian statement confirmed that immigrants were among the victims. A video broadcast by Sweden’s TV4 was recorded during the gun attack from a school toilet in which the words “away from Europe!” are heard. It is not clear who shouted the words and police have been careful not to discuss a motive. However, Bergkwist appeared to row back an early statement from authorities on Tuesday that the motive for the attack was not ideological. “Why they said that, I cannot comment,” she said. “We are looking at different motives, we will declare it when we have it.” Rickard Andersson has been described locally as a recluse and one report by Swedish website Aftonbladet suggested his attack may have targeted local social services. A source told the site that he had argued with a social worker after he had lost his ******** benefits because he had not done enough to find work. Police said earlier that the suspect had no previous convictions, no apparent links to gangs and they did not believe the attack was motivated by terrorism. After lunch, Nathan Lyon (3-78) broke a 70-run stand for the second wicket and began a Sri Lankan collapse of 4-34 that looked set to consign the hosts to another capitulation. Beyond the Super Bowl: Comeback Stocks for 2025 Beyond the Super Bowl: Comeback Stocks for 2025 In a hyper-consumerist culture like the US, branding is king. And the annual Super Bowl ad extravaganza serves as the platform to show which company has the best vibes on offer. In turn, these companies, showcasing their zeitgeist mastery, tend to receive stock price boosts. One academic study from 2010 concluded that “two to four days before and after there is a significant positive stock price effect”. This stands to reason as companies that deploy well-conceived and received ads are more likely to increase their standing in the minds of consumers. Some researchers, Tomkovick and Yelkur from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, believe that Super Bowl ads are not the primary drivers for the stock boost effect, but as the latest and more visible carryovers of wider marketing campaigns. Nonetheless, the existence of the effect is enough of a signal to pay attention. In particular, to these stocks that have seen prior Super Bowl boosts, as other companies move to The Sphere for more consistent gains. 1. Anheuser Busch Inbev NV In early April 2023, this beer conglomerate picked transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney as the brand ambassador for Bud Light. The public reception was expectedly negative, followed by protracted backlash and boycott calls. Nonetheless, the impact of this incident on Anheuser Busch Inbev NV’s (NYSE:) performance was short-lived, dropping from $65 range to $53 per share by June. At that time, the company launched Easy to Summer commercials, in stark thematic contrast to the controversial trans push. Although the stock has been more volatile, it recovered by January 2024. Anheuser’s shares reached a 52-week peak in mid-May 2024 at $67.49, now priced at $48.82 per share. The recovery was expected given that Anheuser owns hundreds of beer brands and has a sophisticated supply chain implementing High-Density Storage (HDS) and Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS). Moreover, the Trump admin purged all DEI initiatives from the federal framework, alongside “restoring biological truth”, thus shifting culture away from the Mulvaney era. This alleviates pressure from companies to attempt similar marketing gambits and Anheuser Busch is likely to continue its redemption arc. At previous Super Bowls, the beer company had well-received ad launches, related to the Game of Thrones series and Sex and the City. Both resulted in minor stock boosts. Over a one-year *******, BUD stock is down 21.27%, presenting a buy-the-dip opportunity before another upward cycle. At the moment, the average BUD price target is $67.39 per share, according to WSJ’s forecasting data, suggesting a significant upside just at the right time. 2. Microsoft In 2020, Microsoft (NASDAQ:) made an unusual We All Win Super Bowl ad featuring an adaptive controller for disabled children. This was a clever strategy, as Microsoft is too omnipresent to need branding. Rather, it relied on softening its image, which turned out effective with a few percentages worth of stock boost. In 2024, Microsoft’s Super Bowl presence was AI-centered, featuring the company’s Copilot AI push. Just as MS Office and Windows OS are centerpieces of Microsoft’s dominance, Copilot aims to be the AI layer on top to automate tasks, as a more fine-tuned version of OpenAI’s large language model (LLM). This year, Microsoft will not show up at the Super Bowl specifically, but the company is actively utilizing Las Vegas’ The Sphere. Over the last five years, MSFT stock is up 124%, which is lower than the company’s revenue increase of 71.4% to $261.8 billion by the end of 2024. In the latest earnings ending December 31, 2024, Microsoft reported $69.6 billion in revenue, an uptick of 12% from the year-ago quarter. It appears that AI benefits are kicking in, as the new business tracked 175% yoy revenue growth to $13 billion. Therefore, investors should not only view Microsoft as a blue chip stock, a legacy software stock but also as an AI stock that is the most likely to bring AI to the masses. Presently priced at $412.37, the average MSFT price target is $508.60 per WSJ forecasting data. Nike The sporting goods company has a long history of high-profile marketing at the Super Bowl. The Sphere is also to take that mantle this year. At the same time, Nike (NYSE:) has been in trouble in recent years, especially following a particularly poor earnings call at the end of June 2024. Accordingly, NKE stock is down 24.6% over one year. Currently at $75.15, NKE shares are light years away from the all-time high of $170.84 in November 2021. The present price is also lower than the 52-week average of $84.95 per share. Nonetheless, picking stocks that are down are the often most profitable opportunities. The question is, does Nike have a comeback strategy? Under the previous CEO, John Donahoe, Nike underwent several restructuring efforts, including the move towards a direct-to-consumer model. This turned out to be a bad move, opening up opportunities for New Balance, On, Adidas and other competitors. In short, the company needs to move away from its outdated reliance on legacy Air Jordans, as new brands are more popular with the younger crowd. The new CEO Elliott Hill seems to be aware of this, as he emphasized the need to enhance Nike’s digital presence. Hill also believes that excessive discounting eroded Nike’s premium branding as well as overreliance on lifestyle instead of core sports. If Hill is proven right, Nike could be a big gainer for investors in 2025. At the moment, Piper Sandler and BMO Capital analysts placed the NKE price targets at $90 and $95 respectively. Per WSJ, the average NKE price target is $84.57 per share. *** Neither the author, Tim Fries, nor this website, The Tokenist, provide financial advice. Israel Tells Military to Draft Plan for Gazans to Leave Israel Tells Military to Draft Plan for Gazans to Leave The Israeli defense minister said Thursday that he had ordered Israel’s military to draft a plan to allow Gazans to voluntarily leave the enclave, a move that comes after President Trump’s proposal for a massive resettlement of Palestinians and a U.S.-led takeover of the territory. It was far from clear whether the proposal would be carried out, where the Israeli authorities hoped the Gazans would go, or how many people they imagined would leave. But Israel Katz, the defense minister, praised Mr. Trump’s initiative, saying it could “allow a large population in Gaza to leave for various places in the world.” Mr. Katz said his plan for Gazans to leave the enclave would include “exit options via land crossings, as well as special arrangements for departure by sea and air.” He made no mention of whether they would be allowed to come back home after the war. On Tuesday evening, Mr. Trump argued that the roughly two million Palestinians in Gaza should leave during a joint news conference with visiting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel. He also proposed that the United States “take over” and “own” the Gaza Strip, although administration officials later tried to soften his comments. The plan has evoked furious opposition across much of the world, and some critics have argued the moves could amount to ethnic cleansing if implemented. “It is a fantasy to think that ethnic cleansing in the 21st century can be condoned,” Turki al-Faisal, a former Saudi intelligence chief, said in an interview on Wednesday with CNN. “The problem in Palestine is not the Palestinians — it is the Israeli occupation,” he added. In devastated Gaza, many vowed to remain despite the hunger, cold and fear of renewed fighting between Israel and ******. Both sides are currently observing a six-week truce — the first stage of a cease-fire deal mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States — and there is no guaranteeing how long it will hold. But Mr. Trump’s statements have already prompted celebrations among Israel’s far-right, many of whom have long promulgated so-called “voluntary emigration” as the solution to the conflict with the Palestinians. In the weeks after ******’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack ignited the war, Mr. Netanyahu’s aides lobbied its allies, including the United States and the United Kingdom, to pressure Egypt to admit hundreds of thousands of Gazan civilians. Israel’s partners largely dismissed the proposal, in part because they feared the Israeli authorities would not allow Gazans to return home after the war. Senior members of Mr. Netanyahu’s hard-line coalition government have publicly called for Israel to rule the territory indefinitely and build Jewish settlements there. Many modern wars have generated waves of refugees. But Gazans, unusually, have mostly been trapped inside the ************ enclave with little way out. More than 100,000 left in the first several months of the war before Israel conquered the border crossing with Egypt, shuttering the gateway. That left roughly two million still in the Gaza Strip, many of them displaced and living in tents. Many Palestinians have resisted leaving: the mass displacement of their parents and grandparents in the wars surrounding Israel’s 1948 establishment remains one of their greatest collective traumas. But neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan have also shown little interest in taking them in, treating them as an economic burden and a source of potential domestic upheaval. During an interview with Fox News on Wednesday evening, Mr. Netanyahu said that Palestinians could “relocate and come back” if necessary. “The actual idea of allowing Gazans who want to leave to leave — I mean, what’s wrong with that?” he said. “They can leave, they can then come back.” Mr. Katz, the Israeli defense minister, argued that countries like Spain and Norway, which have been critical of Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza, were obligated to take them in or else “their hypocrisy would be exposed.” José Manuel Albares, Spain’s foreign minister, appeared to shoot down the idea in an interview with the country’s public broadcaster on Thursday morning. “Gazans’ land is Gaza and Gaza must be part of the future ************ state,” said Mr. Albares. How To Heal in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 How To Heal in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 You get continually broken, beaten, and scarred throughout Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, so knowing how to heal is imperative if you desire to see the RPG through to its conclusion. I don’t know about your Henry, but mine has been punched, kicked, and slashed for fun. He’s also been bitten more times than a British tourist in a hot climate. He’s lost copious amounts of blood and is held together by stitches and bandages at this point. The key thing is he’s still alive—thanks to healing in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. Tutorials and helping hints don’t always make things clear in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. This is why I’ve chosen the best and fastest healing methods. Best Ways To Heal in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 I’ve seen this screen more times than I care to count. Image by Insider Gaming You can heal Henry by sleeping, paying to use a Bathhouse, imbibing Chamomile Brew or Marigold Decoction Potions, and eating the right foods. Say goodbye to your cuts, bruises, and lacerations as multiple healing methods exist. They’re not all the most convenient methods in the world though—so let’s run through each one and how they help you. Eating Well & Perks The “Cheers!” Perk allows Beer and Wine to give you five health points each time—but don’t overdo it! Aside from gulping down alcoholic grapes like there’s no tomorrow, you should concentrate on finding and gathering foods capable of healing you. It’s largely Fruit and Vegetables that have this effect. You can check the sub-menu on the inventory screen which tells you the properties of each item. If it says it gives you a small bit of health back, you know what to eat and find more of in the future. Having a Bath Forget washing yourself in a trough or anything like that. We all know the way to feel truly rejuvenated is to have a bath. In my early Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 travels, my first visit to a bathhouse was great. Henry was clean and relaxed, and most importantly, his health was fully restored. The Zhelejov Wagoners’ Inn fast travel point takes you to the location in no time. The area is in a southeasterly direction from Troskowitz. Be warned, the more services you require (some being more intimate than others) the more Groschen you pay. Plentiful Potions I’ve found the Chamomile Decoction and Marigold Decoction to be highly effective at recovering health. You learn how to make the Chamomile Decoction early on when Bozhena saves you. Always remember, it needs Wine, Sage, and Chamomile! Whereas a Marigold Decoction requires a Water base, Nettle, and Marigold. The potion “Gradually heals part of your health,” making it an integral part of the KC2 healing process. Having a Sleep Finally, if you want a basic way to heal, find somewhere to put your head down for a few hours. A basic sleep without any bathing goodness, food, or potions, can do wonders. You can either pay Inns and Taverns for the pleasure of using a bed. You can also repeatedly make the mistake of trying to sleep in other people’s beds and continually face the crime of “Trespassing.” But the best thing you can do is visit Blacksmith Radovan in Tachov and acquire your bed. You’ll always know if the bed you’re sleeping in is allowed because you get an option to save the game—you don’t always need to rely on Saviour Schnapps. Make your Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 experience even grander by knowing the best Console Commands and Cheats, where to find the best Crossbow, and how to earn Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Twitch Drops. Google Rolls Out February 2025 Security Patch for Android With 47 Fixes Google Rolls Out February 2025 Security Patch for Android With 47 Fixes Google on Monday released the February 2025 security patch for Android devices. The update brings crucial security fixes for discovered vulnerabilities, ranging from high to critical severity, including one CVE which is said to have been “actively exploited”. Several flaws target devices powered by Arm, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Unisoc components, while other vulnerabilities affect general system components such as framework and kernel. February 2025 Security Patch for Android According to Google’s Android Security Bulletin for February 2025, a total of 47 discovered vulnerabilities have been patched with the latest update. Following the rollout, the Mountain View-based technology giant has also released the source code patches for these issues to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository. Google notes that one of the vulnerabilities, with the identifier CVE-2024-53104, is related to the USB Video Class (UVC) driver subcomponent and may be “under limited, targeted exploitation”. With a high severity and a CVSS score of 7.8, it could lead to “physical escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed”, as per the bulletin. While Google has not shared any other details, the National Vulnerability Database, which is the US government’s repository of standards-based vulnerability management data, describes it as a video subsystem flaw in the Linux kernel. It occurred when the uvc_parse_format function tried handling UVC_VS_UNDEFINED frame but skipped or ignored the undefined frames, parsing them instead. The uvc_parse_streaming function, which calculates the buffer size, created this vulnerability as it tried to calculate the buffer size for the expected frames but did not account for the undefined ones. Thus, its attempt to write data steered past the allocated buffer size, creating an out-of-bounds write. Out of the 47 vulnerabilities patched with the February 2025 update, only one has been labelled a “critical” severity, CVE-2024-45569. It has a CVSS rating of 9.8. The flaw affects WLAN subcomponent in Qualcomm devices. It also addresses issues related to framework, kernel, platform, and system. Low growth and rising prices Low growth and rising prices Another cut in interest rates, and the surprise here was that more consideration was given to a bumper half a percentage point cut in rates today, as the ***’s economic stagnation is forecast to extend into the first part of this year. If everything was equal, the assumption would be that the weak economy would now lead to further gradual cuts this year, bringing interest rates down to 4% or lower by the end of the year. But the stagnant economy is now accompanied by sharper inflationary risks from higher energy prices. Inflation is expected to “rise quite sharply” into the autumn, getting close to 4%, driven by rises in gas prices stemming from the need to fill drained storage facilities after a cold winter. While a recession is forecast to be narrowly avoided, zero growth and high and rising inflation is textbook “stagflation”. On top of all that the Bank is stressing that it will be “careful” with cuts against the backdrop of tremendous uncertainty about President Trump’s trade policy. The uncertainty is not just about what he does, but the market reaction to it, and the response of other countries, including the ***. Today’s weaker forecast did not factor in the US tariff policies. It is a far from happy set of figures for the chancellor. The economy has been flat since March. A technical recession is narrowly avoided, but there is a risk of little or no growth well into this year. Over this year the economy is forecast to grow by just 0.75%, half the rate forecast in November. Unemployment is expected to rise over the next two years to just below 5%. The Bank’s contacts with business report that more firms “mentioned the Budget as a deterrent to investment” referencing business asset relief, inheritance tax and National Insurance. The Bank has also done its stocktake of the long-run health of the economy, concluding that sickness, the pandemic and Brexit all hit the productivity of the economy. All in all, a challenging domestic vista, with global uncertainties rising. Source link #growth #rising #prices Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Apple’s Foldable iPhone Inches Closer to Reality; Specifications Hinted in New Leak Apple’s Foldable iPhone Inches Closer to Reality; Specifications Hinted in New Leak Rumours about a foldable iPhone have been circulating for years and its development has been slow-moving based on what we’ve heard so far. However, a new leak suggests the possible release window and key specifications of Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The inaugural foldable offering from Apple is said to be a book-style folding smartphone, something akin to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. It is tipped to come with a 12-inch inner screen and could feature dual rear cameras. Apple’s Foldable iPhone Could Launch in 2026 X user HaYaO (Shun HaYaO) shared the likeliest launch timeline and details of Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The Cupertino-based giant is tipped to launch the foldable phone as soon as fall 2026. The company is said to bring a foldable iPad and Macbook in 2027. The post suggests that there is no progress in small folding mobile phones, presumably the rumoured flip-style foldable for the time being. Instead large folding phones, that could open up like a book to become tablet-size devices, are said to be in the works. Apple’s book-style foldable iPhone is said to measure 9.2mm in thickness when folded and 4.6mm when unfolded. For comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 measures 12.1mm in thickness while folded and Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a 13.4mm thickness. The “internal screen is comparable to two 6.1‑inch phones folded together” said the tipster “resulting in a total size of over 12 inches.” The tipster estimates that the company will sell 8-10 million units of the foldable iPhone in 2026, and then 20 million units in 2027. Foxconn could be the OEM next year and the company may hire Luxshare in 2027. The screen of the foldable iPhone could be supplied by Samsung and the company is said to be developing UTG Lens technology exclusively for Apple. It’s likely a variation of the ultra-thin glass (UTG) Samsung uses for its bendable products. The hinge is said to be designed by Apple and sourced from Taiwan-based companies. Internal parts could be obtained from Lingyi. The foldable iPhone is tipped to feature an aluminium alloy middle frame. It is likely to feature a dual rear camera setup comprising a main camera and an ultra-wide angle sensor. The battery capacity could be around 5,000mAh and the cell is expected to be 3D stacked, exclusively developed by ATL. Marcelo: Real Madrid legend retires from football aged 36
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Marcelo: Real Madrid legend retires from football aged 36 Marcelo: Real Madrid legend retires from football aged 36 Brazil defender Marcelo has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36. The left-back, one of the most decorated players in history, played 58 times for Brazil. After coming through the ranks of Brazilian club Fluminense, Marcelo joined Real Madrid in 2007 at the age of 18. He won 25 pieces of major silverware in 15 years at the Bernabeu, including five Champions League titles and six La Liga titles. “At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileno,” Marcelo said in a video on his social media. “Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, one of the captains and so many magical nights at the Bernabeu. What a journey! “My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything.” Marcelo was named club captain in 2021, becoming the first non-Spaniard to be given the armband at the club in 117 years. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said: “Marcelo is one of the greatest left-backs in the history of Real Madrid and world football, and we have had the privilege of enjoying him for a long time. “He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and will always be his home.” He left Madrid at the end of the 2021-22 season to join Greek side Olympiacos, but terminated his deal just five months after joining. Marcelo re-joined boyhood club Fluminense in 2023 and spent two seasons back at the club, making 68 appearances. The full-back left by mutual consent last November, following a public falling out with manager Mano Menezes. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: A Look at the New AI Features Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: A Look at the New AI Features The Galaxy S25 Ultra, Samsung’s flagship S series phone for 2025, is going all in on Galaxy AI. While the phone does get some meaningful hardware upgrades, the main focus this year is on making the Ultra the best AI phone out there. Samsung wants to change the way users interact with the phone. And the Galaxy S25 series gets multimodal AI agents to do just that. Galaxy AI has evolved, and compared to last year, you can do a lot more now. From translating and summarising texts to creating images, from advanced Circle to Search to Google’s Gemini with natural language search being available everywhere, the Galaxy S25 series could be a glimpse at the phones of the future. I’ve been using the Galaxy S25 Ultra and its AI features for the last few weeks, and here’s a brief look at all the new things Galaxy AI can do on Samsung’s latest flagship. Now Bar As soon as you wake up the phone, you’re now greeted with the Now Bar, which sits on the lockscreen. This is a contextual bar that gives you updates from apps and shows information on events. The bar will show you information on the music that you’re listening to, flight timings, the best time to leave for the airport, Google Maps directions, delivery updates, and live scores from games that you follow or are interested in. The Now Bar sits on the lock screen You can tap on a particular bar to get even more information and swipe through it to see all the different updates. Now Brief This one isn’t as useful as the Now Bar, as it basically gives you a detailed look at your day. The Brief includes information about the weather, your reminders, your calendar, health information such as sleep quality, and more. It will show up when you start your day, and provide suggestions throughout the day until you go to bed. The Now Brief is not the most useful, to be honest Press and Hold Power to Gemini The best new AI feature on the Galaxy S25 Ultra and the rest of the Galaxy S25 phones is the inclusion of a system-wide Gemini. Simply press and hold the power button and you can ask Gemini anything, including details about what’s on your screen. You can also show Gemini a photo of anything that’s in front of you, and get recommendations. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the ability to perform cross-app actions. You can give Gemini a specific set of instructions about a task and it will get it done, most of the time. For instance, you can ask Gemini to find a particular pair of shoes on the internet or an e-commerce app and then share it with a friend on WhatsApp. However, as of now, this functionality is only supported on Samsung’s built-in apps and Google apps. Samsung did promise to bring support to several third-party apps though, including WhatsApp. The Galaxy S25 Ultra has AI agents for completing tasks With natural language input available throughout the phone, you can also ask Gemini to look for a particular photo in your Gallery or find a specific Setting. For example, in the Settings app, you’re given an option to use voice to search for a particular setting even if you don’t know what it’s called. You could say ‘I want to reduce eye strain’ and the AI will show you the Eyecare settings. You can talk on the phone in a natural language to get things done All of this worked quite well on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Improved Circle to Search Google’s Circle to Search has also been improved and can now even understand audio. You can use the feature to get more information about a song that’s playing nearby. A new audio button is included next to the search bar in the Circle to Search pop-up dialogue. The results are certainly much more informative than simply knowing the name of a song. Search results will now also show Google’s AI Overviews. AI Select Next up, AI Select, which is a feature based on the already available Smart Select. This is available via the Sidebar and it now uses AI to understand what’s on your screen. You can use AI Select to get more information about something on the screen or summarise text. You can use AI Select to turn a video into a GIF It can also offer certain actions based on what’s on the display. When watching a YouTube video or an Instagram reel, you can bring up AI Select and create a GIF. Generative AI features in Gallery Samsung’s Gallery app also got some AI improvements. The object eraser is much better, and Sketch to Image now lets you add text inputs as well. The generative fill features on the Galaxy S25 Ultra are some of the best I’ve seen on smartphones, including the Google Pixel 9 series. You can now input text to get output in Sketch to Image There are a couple of more AI features available on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, including an Audio Eraser in Videos, which worked quite well in my testing. There’s also something called a Personal Filter, which lets you create a custom filter using any photo from the Gallery and apply it to other images. It is to be noted that most of these features require an active internet connection, which means that Samsung is doing most of the work on the cloud. The Galaxy S25 Ultra comes with six months of free Gemini Advanced subscription that includes 2TB of cloud storage. Overall, the AI features, both old and new, worked really well in my testing. To find out more about the Galaxy S25 Ultra and whether it’s worth an upgrade, stay tuned to our full review. De Minaur powers into quarter-finals of Rotterdam Open De Minaur powers into quarter-finals of Rotterdam Open *********** No.1 Alex de Minaur has handed out a lesson to young rising star Jakub Mensik to book a place in the Rotterdam Open quarter-finals with a straight-sets triumph. At one of his favourite European hardcourt events in the Rotterdam Ahoy arena in the Netherlands, de Minaur has now reached the last-eight in four consecutive editions but this year may fancy going the whole way after his hugely impressive 6-6 6-4 win on Thursday. It took just one break of the 19-year-old Czech’s huge serve in each set to send the world No.8 on his way, while his own delivery was never threatened as he didn’t give up even the sniff of a break point. World No.47 Mensik is the world’s top men’s teenage talent, the only one in the game’s top-50, but third seed de Minaur made him look still like a work in progress as he applied all the pressure with a performance that suggested he’s now really approaching his best again after some of his injury struggles in 2024. The one-hour 27-minute victory sets last year’s finalist de Minaur up for a last-eight clash with either another rising star, 20-year-old Frenchman Arthur Fils, his opponent at Wimbledon last year when he suffered the hip injury that dogged him for the rest of the season, or ******* lucky loser Daniel Altmaier. Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY) earnings Q4 2024 Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY) earnings Q4 2024 The Bristol Myers Squibb research and development center at Cambridge Crossing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Dec. 27, 2023. Adam Glanzman | Bloomberg | Getty Images Bristol Myers Squibb on Thursday said it will slash $2 billion in costs by the end of 2027, expanding its ongoing cost savings effort to chart a path toward long-term growth. Bristol Myers said savings will be driven by organizational changes and efforts to streamline operations and will allow the company to invest in new science and drug brands expected to deliver growth. The pharmaceutical giant still plans to cut $1.5 billion in costs by the end of 2025 and funnel that money into drug development. It first announced those cuts in April, and expanded on them with Thursday’s announcement. The company is preparing to offset the loss in revenue from top-selling treatments slated to lose exclusivity on the market, including its blockbuster blood thinner Eliquis and ******* immunotherapy Opdivo. Also on Thursday, Bristol Myers Squibb issued full-year 2025 guidance that fell short of Wall Street’s expectations, as some of the company’s older drugs face competition from cheaper generics. That includes four drugs for different cancers: Revlimid, Pomalyst, Sprycel and Abraxane. Bristol Myers expects revenue to come in around $45.5 billion, which is below the $47.36 billion that analysts surveyed by LSEG were expecting. The company’s revenue guidance also reflects an approximately $500 million expected negative impact from foreign exchange. The drugmaker expects adjusted earnings per share of between $6.55 to $6.85. Analysts surveyed by LSEG expected adjusted earnings of $6.92 per share. Despite that outlook, Bristol Myers reported fourth-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that blew past expectations, boosted by Eliquis and the company’s so-called “growth portfolio” of drugs. Here is what Bristol Myers reported for the fourth quarter compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG: Earnings per share: $1.67 adjusted vs. $1.46 expectedRevenue: $12.34 billion vs. $11.57 billion expected Bristol Myers posted net income of $72 million, or 4 cents per share, for the fourth quarter. That compares with net income of $1.8 billion, or 87 cents per share, for the year-earlier *******. Excluding certain items, it reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.67 for the quarter. Bank of England Cuts Interest Rates as British Economy Weakens Bank of England Cuts Interest Rates as British Economy Weakens The Bank of England cut interest rates on Thursday for the third time in about six months, amid signs of weak economic growth in Britain and an unexpected slow down in inflation. Policymakers cut the key rate a quarter point to 4.5 percent. Two members of the nine-person rate-setting committee voted to lower rates by a larger half-point move. Andrew Bailey, the governor of the central bank, said policymakers would take “a gradual and careful approach to reducing rates further” as they monitored economic developments in Britain and abroad. The inflation rate slowed slightly to 2.5 percent in December, when economists had been expecting the rate to hold steady. Crucially, inflation in the services sector, which has been particularly stubborn, slowed to 4.4 percent from 5 percent in November. Even as inflation has dropped substantially from its double digit highs just a couple of years ago, the Bank of England has been particularly cautious in easing monetary policy. Last year, it cut rates less than its counterparts in the United States, Canada and the eurozone. British policymakers remained concerned about lingering inflationary risks, particularly as wage growth remained relatively strong, and uncertain about the impact of recent spending and tax changes by the government. In the past few weeks, central bankers in Britain and elsewhere have been grappling with the added risk of a global trade war. Although the inflationary impact of higher tariffs imposed by President Trump on various countries and subsequent retaliatory actions is hard for economists to predict in advance of those policies, they anticipate that it will be a drag on economic growth. Britain has not been the target of threats from Mr. Trump, unlike the country’s largest trading partner, the European Union. That could weigh on the British economy, which has already been experiencing lackluster growth. Traders have increased their bets on how many more times the Bank of England will cut rates this year. Before the rate announcement on Thursday, Britain’s benchmark stock index, the FTSE 100, hit a record high in midday trading. Still, British policymakers have been more cautious in easing policy than their counterparts in the eurozone as they wait to see how additional government spending feeds through to the economy and how British employers might respond to tax increases that will go into effect in April. Some companies have already responded by cutting jobs. If more follow, that could further weaken the economy and add to pressure to keep cutting rates. But other companies might pass on the higher tax bills to customers through higher prices, adding inflationary pressures. Met Police launches crackdown on mobile phone thefts Met Police launches crackdown on mobile phone thefts Metropolitan Police The Met says there is a £50m-a-year trade in stolen phones in London A clampdown on the “industrial-scale” crime of mobile phone-snatching across London has resulted in 230 people being arrested by the Metropolitan Police in the past week. In its battle against the “scourge of mobile phone crime”, the force said it had also seized more than 1,000 handsets. The Met has deployed plain-clothed officers in “hotspot” areas, including the West End and Westminster, and is also using tracking technology to recover phones and catch criminals. It said its work had been “ramped up” to deal with the £50m-a-year trade in stolen phones across the capital, with those responsible for thefts, handling, and onward criminal supply all being targeted. It comes as Home Secretary Yvette Cooper chairs a summit later on Thursday on smartphone theft. The Met said that the home secretary and Met Deputy Commissioner Dame Lynne Owens would discuss the issue of improving security on phones to prevent stolen devices from being easily resold. A recent victim, Richard, told the BBC that the theft of his phone had left him feeling “uncomfortably nervous”. Richard said he was walking along Highbury Fields in north London when someone dressed “entirely in ******” who was riding an e-bike snatched his phone from his hand. He said: “It’s frustrating because that’s exactly where this sort of thing typically happens. I’m always telling people to be careful, but for one moment I forgot and my phone went off into the distance.” He said he was initially angry, but his thoughts soon turned to worries about his banking details being obtained by the thief – although this did not happen. Richard’s phone was snatched from his hand while he was walking through Highbury Fields Richard said he was “surprised” by the police response to his phone being stolen. He explained how officers visited him at home, and by using a tracker they could see his device had been taken to a phone repair shop, where Richard said the police explained there had been previous criminal activity. Despite this, the phone could not be recovered. The way police responsed to this crime is markedly different from what other Londoners say they have experienced, even recently. In December, a designer from Tottenham told the BBC how she had felt unsupported by police after her phone was stolen, and ended up using tracking technology to trace it herself. Izzy Du located the phone hidden in a hedge, along with six other handsets. Getty Images Police say by intensifying their efforts they expect to catch more phone-snatchers and “protect more people” The Met’s Cdr Owain Richards said: “We are seeing phone thefts on an industrial scale, fuelled by criminals making millions by being able to easily sell on stolen devices either here or abroad. “By intensifying our efforts we’re catching more perpetrators and protecting people from having their phone stolen in the capital.” He added that there were calls for other agencies and the government to do more, and for tech companies to make stolen phones unusable. The force wants the phone industry to prevent stolen handsets from being reconnected to cloud services. The Met said it had used tracking technology, and victims reporting phone-thefts, to recently prosecute four members of a gang who were later sentenced to a combined 18 years in prison. The gang had been caught handling more than 5,000 stolen phones. Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan said the Met was “spearheading targeted work to prevent and tackle mobile phone theft in London”, adding: “I’m determined to eliminate the scourge of mobile phone theft in our city for good.” Advice from police: Use the national mobile phone register so recovered handsets can be restored, via the Police National Mobile Property Register (NMPR)Set up a strong password and two-factor authenticationTurn off message previews so thieves cannot see any messagesWrite down and safely store the phone’s IMEI number Source link #Met #Police #launches #crackdown #mobile #phone #thefts Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
