Bills quarterback Josh Allen named NFL MVP Bills quarterback Josh Allen named NFL MVP Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has been named the NFL’s most valuable player for the first time, beating his Baltimore Ravens counterpart Lamar Jackson in a tight race. A true dual-threat talent, Allen threw for 3,731 yards and 28 touchdowns in the regular season and ran in a dozen more scores as well, becoming the first quarterback to record multiple rushing and passing touchdowns in back-to-back games. “I feel like my teammates wanted this more for me than I did,” Allen said. “I’m very honoured.” Allen memorably became the first quarterback with a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in one game in the Bills’ week 13 win against the San Francisco 49ers, when he threw to – and then caught a lateral pass back from – Amari Cooper and ran into the end zone. He led the Bills to their sixth straight playoffs appearance this year, where they lost in the AFC Championship to the Kansas City Chiefs. A runner-up for the award twice before, Allen reportedly received 27 first-place votes to Jackson’s 23 for the award that is decided by a panel of sportswriters. Thursday’s announcement surprised some fans after Jackson, who enjoyed a near-pristine regular season with 41 touchdown passes and just four interceptions, had been named the First-Team All-Pro quarterback last month. “I was pretty surprised, given what we know about – typically – how the voting goes,” Allen told reporters. “Lamar was very deserving of this award as well.” Denver cornerback Pat Surtain won defensive player of the year, while Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley took the top offensive player honour after posting a league-leading 2,005 rushing yards. Jacksonville defensive end Arik Armstead was the recipient of the Walter Payton man of the year award, considered the NFL’s highest honour recognising on-field performance and philanthropic efforts. Armstead earned the honour for his community work to support children’s education, with a particular emphasis on literacy. One Bay County restaurant temporarily closed after state inspection One Bay County restaurant temporarily closed after state inspection You can use the database to search by county or by restaurant name. Florida’s restaurant owners are not required to post restaurant inspection results where guests can see them. So every week, we provide that information for you. For a complete list of local restaurant inspections, including violations not requiring warnings or administrative action, visit our Bay County restaurant inspections site. Here’s the breakdown for recent health inspections in Bay County for the week of Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, 2025. Please note that some more recent, follow-up inspections may not be included here. Disclaimer: The Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation describes an inspection report as a “snapshot” of conditions present at the time of the inspection. On any given day, an establishment may have fewer or more violations than noted in their most recent inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term conditions at the establishment. For full restaurant inspection details, visit our Bay County restaurant inspection site. Which Bay County restaurants got perfect scores on their health inspections? These restaurants met all standards during their Jan. 27 to Feb. 2 inspections, and no violations were found. ** Restaurants that failed an inspection and aced a follow-up inspection in the same week Which Bay County restaurants were temporarily closed by inspectors? These restaurants failed their Jan. 27 to Feb. 2 inspections and were temporarily closed. Follow-up inspections are required. 1127 1/2 Beck Ave., Panama City Routine inspection on Jan. 28 Facility temporarily closed: Operations ordered stopped until violations are corrected. Three total violations, with one high-priority violation High Priority – ****** activity present as evidenced by a total of 12 live roaches found in the following locations: Five near ceiling at top of electrical conduit on wall by pizza tossing area, four in hole at end of bar near beer reach in cooler, one on floor behind bar near a/c unit, one on wall behind chemical shelf, one on cook line hand wash sink. **Warning** What agency inspects restaurants in Florida? Routine regulation and inspection of restaurants is conducted by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The Department of Health is responsible for investigation and control of food-borne illness outbreaks associated with all food establishments. How do I report a dirty restaurant in Florida? If you see abuses of state standards, report them and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation will send inspectors. Call the Florida DBPR at 850-487-1395 or report a restaurant for health violations online. Get the whole story at our restaurant inspection database. What does all that terminology in Florida restaurant inspections mean? Basic violations are those considered against best practices. A warning is issued after an inspector documents violations that must be corrected by a certain date or within a specified number of days from receipt of the inspection report. An administrative complaint is a form of legal action taken by the division. Insufficient compliance after a warning, a pattern of repeat violations or existence of serious conditions that warrant immediate action may result in the division initiating an administrative complaint against the establishment. Says the division website: “Correcting the violations is important, but penalties may still result from violations corrected after the warning time was over.” An emergency order — when a restaurant is closed by the inspector — is based on an immediate threat to the public. Here, the Division of Hotels and Restaurants director has determined that the establishment must stop doing business and any division license is suspended to protect health, safety or ******** of the public. A 24-hour call-back inspection will be performed after an emergency closure or suspension of license. Europe’s Trump Playbook: Offer Carrots but Warn That You Have a Big Stick Europe’s Trump Playbook: Offer Carrots but Warn That You Have a Big Stick The European Union spent last year drawing up secret plans for what the bloc would do if President Trump made good on his threats of imposing higher tariffs on European goods and services. Now, as those threats go from hypothetical to potentially imminent, its plans are coming into broad focus. Hit specific, politically sensitive sectors — like products made in Republican states — with targeted tariffs meant to inflict maximum pain. Don’t escalate into a ****-for-tat competition if it’s avoidable. Do move quickly and decisively, potentially using new tactics that could hit service providers like big Silicon Valley technology firms. It’s a rough playbook — described broadly by three diplomats who requested anonymity because the plans were still being discussed — that Europe would prefer not to use. The first goal is to avoid a trade war by offering to negotiate and dangling carrots, including more European purchases of American gas, which Mr. Trump has been pushing for. E.U. officials have warned that a trade war between the bloc and the United States would be a self-defeating disaster that would cost both sides and benefit geopolitical rivals like China and Russia. But Mr. Trump has kept the continent in his cross hairs, saying this week that the bloc would “definitely” face tariffs and “pretty soon.” If appeasement fails, Europe is broadcasting that it is ready to hit back. “We are prepared,” Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said during a news conference this week in Brussels, when asked whether she was ready to fend off tariff increases from the new U.S. administration. The commission, the bloc’s executive arm, has remained tight-lipped about what products it might hit with higher tariffs even when it meets with ambassadors and other diplomats from E.U. countries, said the three diplomats, who were briefed on the broad ideas developed by the so-called Trump task force. The bloc has 27 member countries, and plans that are shared too widely are likely to leak, eliminating their strategic advantage. But several guiding principles are increasingly clear, said two of the diplomats, the result both of work by the commission’s task force and of experience gleaned from Mr. Trump’s first term. The diplomats requested anonymity to discuss politically sensitive matters. The first idea is that tariffs would most likely be targeted, whether that means placed on certain industries or geography-tied products. In 2018, for instance, Europe reacted to steel and aluminum tariffs by hitting American ******** with a large tariff, which hurt Kentucky’s bourbon industry and, thus, a constituency critical to Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican who was then the Senate majority leader. A second idea is to stagger the response, kicking in or ratcheting up retaliation only if certain triggers are met or dates passed, two of the diplomats said. Moving deliberately provides more leverage, one diplomat said, and avoids an immediate and painful trade effect. The third is that responses would not necessarily be ****-for-tat, according to all three diplomats. If Mr. Trump orders a 20 percent across-the-board tariff on Europe, that does not mean that Europe must respond with a 20 percent across-the-board tariff on the United States. The E.U. still wants to abide by global trade rules upheld by the World Trade Organization, which could suggest a more surgical approach. One option on the table is the use of an “anti-coercion instrument,” a relatively new legal framework that would allow the bloc to rapidly target large American service providers — like big technology companies — with tariffs. In force since 2023, the tool allows the E.U. to use “a wide range of possible countermeasures” like higher customs duties or import limits when another country harms European industry in an attempt to put pressure on the government and bring about political or policy change. The idea is to allow the bloc to respond to manipulative political pressure swiftly and sternly. The Financial Times initially reported that the commission could use the tool to hit service providers, including large Silicon Valley technology companies, in response to American tariffs. Two of the diplomats confirmed that using the tool was being discussed, though far from a sure plan. They said that moving forward with the tool might be too drastic of an option because Europe’s ultimate goal is not to inflame an all-out trade war. For now, it is impossible for Europe to solidify a reaction plan. The simple reason: Nobody knows what Mr. Trump is going to do. “They want to do a deal — I think they’re very uncertain still about what the true objectives are,” said Jörn Fleck, senior director with the Europe Center at the research group The Atlantic Council. Also, E.U. leaders have at times struggled to get Washington on the phone. Marco Rubio, the secretary of state, has been invited to meet with foreign ministers but has not done so, though he has had a call with the bloc’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas. Ms. von der Leyen has not met with Mr. Trump since the inauguration in January. Even though Mr. Trump has not said what tariffs on Europe would look like, he has repeatedly said he wants Europe to buy more American cars and farm products, in addition to gas. That has left Europe offering incentives in an effort to fend off the trade war before it begins. Officials have been clear that they are willing — even poised — to buy more American fuel. Officials are already trying to find a way to diversity their energy sources as the continent weans itself off Russian gas. “We still get a lot of LNG from Russia, and why not replace it by American LNG,” Ms. von der Leyen said in the days after Mr. Trump was elected, referring to liquefied natural gas. European officials have also said they are likely to buy more American defense products as they ramp up bloc-wide military spending. Higher military expenditures are, in part, a response to Mr. Trump, who has insisted that European nations spend more on NATO. And when it comes to Greenland — an autonomous territory of Denmark, an E.U. member, that Mr. Trump wants to annex for its strategic importance — Europeans have emphasized that they are open to investing more in the island. “I totally agree with the Americans that the High North, that the Arctic region, is becoming more and more important when we’re talking about defense and security and deterrence,” Mette Frederiksen, the prime minister of Denmark, said in Brussels this week. “And it is possible to find a way to ensure stronger footprints in Greenland.” Above all, European leaders have been trying to remind America of how important the relationship between the E.U. and the United States is, both economically and for global peace. Not only is the E.U., when treated as a bloc, America’s most important trading partner. It is also a major importer of American services, and, as officials have repeatedly emphasized in recent days, European companies employ millions of Americans. “A lot is at stake for both sides,” Ms. von der Leyen said this week. But she added that “we will always protect our own interests — however and whenever that is needed.” Ana Swanson contributed reporting. New Domino’s boss Mark van Dyck swings the axe on more than 200 loss-making stores New Domino’s boss Mark van Dyck swings the axe on more than 200 loss-making stores New Domino’s Pizza chief executive Mark van Dyck will swing the axe on 205 loss-making stores, the majority in Japan, in a bid to improve profitability. The struggling Japanese market will take the brunt of the blow, with 172 stores — 58 franchised and 114 corporate-owned operations — to shut up shop at a cost of $97 million. The closure will hit almost one in five of the 944 Domino’s stores in Japan. It marks the first major move by Mr van Dyck, who stepped into the role in November. Mr van Dyck on Friday said many of the stores targeted for closure were opened during COVID-19, fuelling a surge in sales. But he conceded these have since struggled amid the post-pandemic decline in demand and higher costs as inflation soared. “As we’ve been carefully working on the turnaround plan for Japan, it became clear that we opened a large number of stores during the extraordinary ******* of COVID trading and that those were not really sustainable when sales normalised,” he told analysts. “That was coupled . . . with historic levels of cost inflation, something that had a major impact in Japan because Japan economically was very unused to that.” Domino’s has 3733 stores stretching from Europe to Australia. Japan currently has the biggest network. while there are 740 outlets in Australia. The other 33 store closures will be spread across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and other Asian markets. Domino’s has already been closing stores. Last July, it announced it would close up to 110 loss-making shopfront across Japan and France and dumped plans to target 7100 locations by 2030. When asked if the company was done with store closures for Japan or the entire network, Mr van Dyck said: “Today’s announcement is based on what we can see in front of us.” “We’ve made the necessary decisive actions on store closures for all our markets, which will allow us to focus now on sustainable growth,” he said. Mr van Dyck said it was also testing a new approach to pricing and promotion. “Quite honestly I think sometimes we discount too much and give away revenue that we don’t need to,” he said. “You can, if you’re not careful, unintentionally communicate to consumers . . . that it’s not quality.” Mr van Dyck — who succeeded long-serving boss Don Meij — believes Japan can still deliver long-term growth. “(Japan) is a very large (quick service restaurant) market worth $105 billion and still . . . an untapped QSR pizza category worth $2.2b,” he said. News of the cutbacks sent Domino’s shares up almost 22 per cent to $36.10 just before the close. Domino’s reported a preliminary same-store sales decline of 0.6 per cent for the first half of the financial year, despite 4.2 per cent growth in Asia ***** over the six-month *******. It noted group-wide same-store sales were up 4.3 per cent since January as Asia benefits from “sales tailwinds” thanks to the timing of seasonal celebrations. Underlying net profit before tax is expected to be within guidance of between $84m and $86m. Net debt increased over the first half by $15m to $705.1m, with an underlying reduction of $31.4m, offset by $46.4m in foreign transaction translations. Domino’s said it plans to issue an interim dividend of 55.5¢ a share. The company said its *********** and New Zealand network continued to deliver positive results, with new product launches reaching customers on new occasions, including the launch of Domino’s Giant Doughnuts, which added additional sales and customers. They Met Analyzing Stories Like These They Met Analyzing Stories Like These Kim Hoang Nguyen was intrigued when she stumbled across Todd William Schneider online. Not because Mr. Schneider, a Yale graduate, screamed marriage material, but rather because of the comprehensive data he collected on a subject she was interested in (according to which, Ivy League graduates were once heavily featured). “I love your work,” Ms. Nguyen said in an email, referring to his search engine, weddingcrunchers.com. She was trying to create a similar one to research wedding trends for a story pitch as a freelance writer, and wondered what compelled his work. In 2013, Mr. Schneider built the search engine on a lark in two weeks, and scraped data from traditional wedding announcements featured in The New York Times from 1981 to 2020 — when traditional announcements became the more narrative Mini-Vows — and analyzed it in a wry, cynical way on his website. (The site is not affiliated with The Times.) Among his takeaways: “There used to be more Republicans than Democrats cited; over the years there were fewer mentions of preppy boarding schools; and the words ‘hedge fund’ overtook ‘investment bank.’” “I tracked words and phrases, college names, company names, ages,” said Mr. Schneider, 41, who graduated summa **** laude from Yale with a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and electrical engineering. He is a founder and the chief technology officer of Poppy Legal, a legal expense management platform start-up company. Ms. Nguyen, 31, a data graphics journalist in a fellowship program at Business Insider, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Waterloo in Ontario. To his surprise, Mr. Schneider received numerous requests for interviews from publications and TV stations, as well as technical inquiries. “Certainly the most special was from Kim,” he said. During a girls’ night out, Ms. Nguyen recalled a friend teased her about her tech wiz: “‘Wouldn’t it be funny if you started dating and you could publish your own wedding announcement?’” Last January, after intermittent exchanges with him, sometimes months apart, she finally asked Mr. Schneider if he would like to meet for a drink. He suggested coffee instead. “Lower stakes,” he explained. On a Monday afternoon, while they were both between jobs and living in Brooklyn, they ended up talking shop on a sofa at Brew Memories in Park Slope. He had chamomile tea, and she had a matcha latte. Once they discovered they both loved “The Simpsons,” they each effortlessly dropped a line or reference from the animated sitcom. After about an hour and a half, they parted with a hug, not knowing if it had been an actual date. Ms. Nguyen texted him later about meeting up again, and the next week they walked around the Brooklyn Botanic Garden until it closed. “It was very quiet, serene and dormant,” she said. They then sat on the steps outside the Brooklyn Museum, before warming up at a nearby bar. As he drank a beer, and she a cider, he playfully grilled her about why she wanted to meet him: “What if I were weird? What if I were married?” The tone grew more serious at dinner at Sushi Lin in Park Slope. She talked about her parents who came from Vietnam and settled in Canada, where she grew up in the greater Toronto area, and he told her about his father, who had died in 2015. Like them, he was a big fan of “The Simpsons.” Later, they waited on the same subway platform — he en route to Williamsburg and she to Prospect Lefferts Gardens. “I’m running out of time,” he said, as his train approached. Her reply: “How would you like to say goodbye?” He quickly said: “With a kiss.” “This was definitely a date,” Ms. Nguyen said. Two days later, they had a marathon date that included a trip to the Cloisters, an impromptu picnic in Fort Tryon Park, and dinner at Have & Meyer, in Williamsburg. They soon began spending many days together. [Click here to binge read this week’s featured couples.] In February, she joined him on a trip to Washington to celebrate his friend’s birthday. When she mentioned her lease was up in mid-February, he told her she could stay with him whenever she was in New York, and not back in Canada with her family. That spring she experienced her first Passover Seder at his mother’s house in Philadelphia. In June, after they celebrated her birthday in Montreal, he met her parents and her Chihuahua, Milo, in Brampton, Ontario. By fall, they began talking about marriage — this time their own. By the end of the year, they had chosen a wedding date. In January, to make it official, he proposed in Fort Tryon Park. On Jan. 22, the first anniversary of their first date, Wanyi Mai, a city clerk, officiated at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau before their immediate families and Milo, who now lives with them in Brooklyn. The bride wore a white crepe skirt suit and the groom his one “serviceable” navy suit, and a new crisp white shirt from J. Crew. They later celebrated at King restaurant with their families and, for dessert, enjoyed a ****** Forest mousse cake made for them by La Bicyclette Bakery, their favorite Williamsburg bakery. “Do I analyze my wedding announcement?” Ms. Nguyen said, with a laugh, then realized something more. “To make sense of all the numbers and variables,” she said, “you need a story.” Source link #Met #Analyzing #Stories Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

No, iOS 18.3 doesn’t install Starlink on your iPhone – here’s what the latest update does, and why you should download it No, iOS 18.3 doesn’t install Starlink on your iPhone – here’s what the latest update does, and why you should download it When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Future While some TikToks are claiming iOS 18.3 installs Starlink on your iPhone, that is not the case In the US, Starlink connectivity is only available on T-Mobile and in beta iOS 18.3 doesn’t install this connectivity, but does make a network change iOS 18.3 is here – and contrary to rumors being spread on TikTok and elsewhere, it doesn’t install Elon Musk’s Starlink tech on your iPhone. So, there’s no reason not to get the latest iOS update on your iPhone and ensure that you’re up to date. iOS 18.3 is a relatively minor update, which mostly impacts Apple Intelligence – enabling the AI features by default and rolling out some fixes for Notification Summaries – and fixing several bugs. It does, however, make a change for T-Mobile customers by allowing the iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 16 lineups to potentially connect to the Starlink-powered terrestrial network of the carrier. It is not, however, allowing that connection by default, and T-Mobile’s partnership with Starlink is still in beta for a select few customers who opt to join it and then get selected to participate. Apple doesn’t have a partnership with Starlink, but T-Mobile does, and you need to opt in a few ways. Let’s unpack this ahead. The myth: iOS 18.3 installs Starlink on your iPhone Credit: Future/Jacob Krol The concern in the now viral TikToks is that the latest version of iOS basically adds a direct connection to Starlink to your iPhone. The main point of concern is that ‘Starlink can now work with iPhone and access it’ without any formal announcement from Apple on if it’s a mandatory connection. Apple initially launched its Emergency SOS via Satellite service alongside the iPhone 14 – with support for the iPhone 15 and 16 – so the smartphones could connect to a satellite. However, it’s not on by default and is only engaged when no LTE or Wi-Fi network is available. Since then, some carriers have offered satellite networks alongside a typical phone network. T-Mobile is doing that, and it initially announced its partnership with Starlink in August 2022. Apple also updated a support page detailing how to turn off carrier-powered satellite features. To do this, open Settings, navigate to Cellular, select your carrier, and turn off ‘Satellite.’ Simply, though, iOS 18.3 does not install Starlink on the iPhone. Essentially, it is packaged within iOS 18.3 as a carrier network settings update for T-Mobile that allows for the connection. It is not on by default, though, and you need to be selected to join the beta after requesting a spot. The reality: T-Mobile has a partnership with Starlink that is currently in beta and iOS 18.3 is safe to install Credit: Apple So no, iOS 18.3 does not add a direct line to the Starlink network – forced or unforced – as some viral TikToks claim. It makes network settings changes that allow T-Mobile-connected iPhone 14, 15, or 16 to connect to T-Mobile 1900MHz spectrum, accessed through antenna ‘band 25’ on the iPhone to access the Starlink network. Even for that network connection to happen, you need to have an eligible T-Mobile plan, register for the beta, and be selected to participate in it. Then, you need to be in an area where that network is supported and when a typical cellular network or Wi-Fi is unavailable. You’ll know that is the case when you see “SAT” replace the standard cellular bars and “4G,” “5G,” or “5G UW” in the top right corner of your iPhone. T-Mobile opened its Starlink network beta program in December 2024, and interested customers have been able to register for it. It was first available to Android smartphones, and then the capability for the iPhone rolled out with iOS 18.3. The partnership and the ability for T-Mobile devices to connect to Starlink’s direct-to-cell technology aims to reduce dead zones and allow users to stay connected. T-Mobile is also the only cellular network in the United States to have this partnership with Starlink. Apple’s satellite connectivity for its iPhone under the ‘Emergency SOS’ feature is not Starlink and is done through a partnership with Globalstar. Furthermore, it’s also best practice to keep your iPhone and other devices up to date, as using older software can make them more susceptible to security and privacy issues. iOS 18.3, like most iOS updates, brings some new features but also, at times, critical bug fixes and important security patches. So, long story short, iOS 18.3 does not add a direct connection to Starlink to your iPhone. It simply allows a T-Mobile-connected iPhone to use that network when you’re outside of traditional coverage if you’ve opted into the beta and have been selected. It’s also a partnership between T-Mobile and Starlink – Apple isn’t involved there and it doesn’t have any impact or change to Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite functionality. That service has been using Globalstar satellites since its inception. If you’re on T-Mobile and want to opt out of using Starlink, open Settings on your iPhone, click Cellular, select your Carrier (in this case, T-Mobile), and turn off Satellite. Fort Worth road rage shooting victim’s dash camera leads police directly to his accused killer Fort Worth road rage shooting victim’s dash camera leads police directly to his accused killer The Brief An arrest warrant affidavit for Koby Burkhart, 22, details how police linked him to the ******* of Ricky Langs, 62, and tracked him down. Police say Burkhart shot and killed Langs last week in a road rage shooting on East Loop 820. Police say Langs’ dash camera captured the whole ordeal and helped them easily find their suspect. The documents say Burkhart tried to change his license plate and hide his Chevy SUV under a tarp. They say he initially claimed he shot Langs because he had a gun and was afraid of him. Police did not find any weapons in Langs’ vehicle. FORT WORTH, Texas – Fort Worth police say the man arrested for a deadly road rage shooting tried to cover his tracks before admitting to the crime. Police say dash camera footage showed the suspect shooting and killing the victim. They say he later tried to change his license plate and hid his Chevy SUV under a tarp. What we know Fort Worth police arrested 22-year-old Koby Burkhart on Monday, charging him with ******* for a road rage shooting last week. Dash camera from victim Ricky Langs’ car captured the shooting on Jan. 27. It shows him honking at Burkhart in a roundabout. Later at a stoplight, Burkhart pulled up beside Langs and two gunshots could be heard on the video. Langs lost control of his car and crashed into a median near the northbound lanes on East Loop 820. What’s New Court documents obtained by FOX 4 on Wednesday reveal Langs’ dash camera footage led police directly to Burkhart. Police say Burkhart replaced the license plates on his Chevy Equinox, and his mom brought him a blue tarp to hide it from police. When officers searched Burkhart’s house, they found the real license plates and the gun used in the shooting. It was hidden in a crawl space. After his arrest, Burkhart claimed Langs had a gun. However, he couldn’t describe the gun other than “it was probably ******,” according to court documents. Burkhart claimed he was afraid Langs would shoot him, so he admitted he fired two shots at the victim, the documents state. Langs did not have a gun in his car. What they’re saying Langs’ daughter, Shelby Johnson, says she had no idea her dad had a dash camera in his car. “I never knew that he did. And I thank God that he did have a dash cam in his car,” she said. “Because we probably wouldn’t have known this soon who was the person that did it.” Johnson says the hardest part was hearing what the dash camera caught after her dad was shot. “It broke me down because I can just hear him in my head,” she said. “His voice just saying, ‘I’ve been shot. I’ve been shot.’ And there’s no one there to help him.” While nothing will bring her dad back, Johnson says getting Burkhart off the streets brings some closure. “It’s just sad. You’re just now starting your life, and now you’re just not going to have a life to live now because you’re going to be locked up,” she said. “Them finding his killer won’t bring him back to us, but justice has been served. And I’m grateful for the investigators and how they took time and did everything and to the conclusion who it was.” What’s next Johnson says she plans to be at every court proceeding to see her dad get the justice he deserves. India cuts policy rate for the first time in nearly five years, new central bank governor Malhotra says India cuts policy rate for the first time in nearly five years, new central bank governor Malhotra says Sanjay Malhotra, governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), during a news conference in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024. India’s newly-appointed central bank governor Malhotra said he will look to uphold stability and continuity in policy in his role. Photographer: Dhiraj Singh/Bloomberg via Getty Images Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images The Reserve Bank of India has cut its key interest rate for the first time in nearly five years, as cooling inflation has offered room to stimulate the slowing economy. The Monetary Policy Committee decided to trim the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.25%, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said in a livestreamed address Friday. The rate cut was widely expected and marked RBI’s first interest rate cut since May 2020 when the country battled the pandemic-inflicted downturn. The benchmark repo rate has remained steady at 6.5% for the past two years, as domestic inflation rate stayed above the central bank’s medium-term target of 4%. Following a peak in October, India’s consumer price inflation has eased, dropping within the central bank’s tolerance ceiling of 6%, coming in at 5.22% in December and 5.48% in November. The Indian government has been steadily lowering its full-year real GDP forecasts, after the economic growth missed expectations by a large margin in the quarter ended September, when its grew by 5.4% — its slowest expansion in nearly two years. The latest projection last month trimmed the growth estimates for the current fiscal year to 6.4% from 7.2% in October, its worst in four years, while inflation projection was raised to 4.8% versus 4.5% earlier. With the rupee hitting record lows against the greenback, any cuts to the bank’s policy rate could spark a further rise in domestic inflation, putting further pressure on the currency and likely triggering capital outflows. RBI has acted to implement substantial interventions in the foreign exchange market to help cushion a potential sudden outflows of foreign capital and avoid any steep fall in the currency. AOC CEO Matthew Carroll says final decisions on Brisbane Olympic venues needed by July AOC CEO Matthew Carroll says final decisions on Brisbane Olympic venues needed by July The *********** Olympic Committee chief executive has issued a stark new deadline for the fast-approaching Brisbane Olympics, warning key decisions on infrastructure need to be made within months for the Games to be a success. Matthew Carroll said the Queensland and federal governments would need to make their final decisions on venues for the sporting extravaganza by July. “I think it is time to finalise anymore reviews and settle on exactly what the two governments want to fund in terms of venues,” he said at a senate hearing into preparations for the Games on Friday. “I think that’s the first half of this year … for two reasons. “One, the sports program will be start to be fleshed out the following year, in 2026, and importantly also, to start the construction process or whatever work needs to be done, which will take a bit of time.” Queensland’s preparations for the 2032 event have been marred by paralysed decision-making on which venues in the city should host which events and whether new stadiums and transport infrastructure need to be built. Camera IconAustralian Olympic Committee chief executive Matt Carroll warned on Friday that final decisions on venues needed to be made in the first half of this year. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia The state government has oscillated for years over whether to pursue a $2.7bn upgrade of Brisbane’s iconic Gabba Stadium in inner-city Woolloongabba or build an entirely new stadium at Victoria Park at an estimated cost of $3.4bn as part of the city’s Olympics legacy. In March this year, former premier Steven Miles rejected both options and instead opted to funnel $1.6bn to upgrade QSAC to host 40,000 spectators and then hold the opening and closing ceremonies at Suncorp Stadium. QSAC’s full capacity is 48,500 seats and the stadium is also located about 12km from the CBD. Premier David Crisafulli, who took power from Mr Miles at the state election in October last year, is working through a 100-day review of infrastructure for the Games. He has repeatedly slammed the QSAC proposal, which he has called a “thought bubble” and an “embarrassment”. He has also previously said he would not commit to a new stadium, which means a Gabba rebuild could be on the cards. The federal and Queensland governments have agreed to a $7.1bn “funding envelope” for the Games. The federal government will finance a new $2bn Brisbane Arena at the Roma Street Station precinct. Camera IconSwimming Australia chief executive Rob Woodhouse wants a new aquatic centre at Victoria Park. Canberra NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia Earlier in the year, former Brisbane mayor Graham Quirk led a review of infrastructure for the Games and ultimately recommended a new stadium at Victoria Park to replace an “end of life” Gabba. At the Senate’s Friday hearing, Greens senator Penny Allman-Payne flagged concerns around building sporting infrastructure at Victoria Park, intimating she didn’t want to see the vast inner-city parkland “concreted” over with new construction. She said any attempt to build new stadiums in the parkland could potentially threaten Brisbane’s contract to host a “climate-positive” Olympics. Mr Carroll stressed decisions on venues were for the government and not the AOC. “The decision of the venues … is one for government and where they are going to locate them and how they are going to adapt to meet the positive green part of the host city contract,” he said. Swimming Australia chief executive Rob Woodhouse also appeared before the committee and reiterated his call for a new national aquatic centre at Victoria Park. He said consultants had assessed “multiple sites” across Brisbane and selected Victoria Park as the best location. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways Feb. 6 (UPI) — Fellow passengers restrained a man who became combative on a Frontier Airlines flight bound for Houston on Wednesday, kicking the seats and breaking a Plexiglass window. The flight departed from Denver and had been in the air for about a half hour when the man allegedly became enraged after a female passenger sitting in front of him asked the man to switch seats. Passenger Victoria Clark said the man started kicking the seat and tried to break a window. “I started having a panic attack,” Clark told ABC News. “[I thought] it could be a terrorist attack,” she said. The man did eventually break the window at which point flight attendants asked if there were any law enforcement officers on board. The airline said there was no air marshal on the flight, but passenger and military veteran Tanner Phillips tried to help. “This guy was just going crazy,” Phillips told ABC News. “He was screaming in multiple languages, punching out the window and laying back and trying to kick it out. I wanted to help as much as I could.” Phillips and fellow passengers used zip ties and boot laces to restrain the man and put him in his seat as the plane continued on to its destination rather than make an emergency landing. Flight F9 4856 landed in Houston at about 10:20 p.m. CST. Police had been notified that there was a combative passenger on board and were on the scene at the airport, but since Frontier declined to press charges, officers did not make an arrest. As such, the man’s name was not released. Nothing Phone 3a Surfaces on TDRA Certification Site Ahead of March 4 Launch Nothing Phone 3a Surfaces on TDRA Certification Site Ahead of March 4 Launch Nothing Phone 3a series is scheduled to launch on March 4 as the successor to the Phone 2a. Ahead of its anticipated debut, one of the models in the lineup has surfaced on a certification site, confirming its model number as well as moniker, and it will indeed be called the Nothing Phone 3a. Notably, the standard Nothing Phone 3a is tipped to be accompanied by a Pro variant as part of the Phone 3a series, marking a first for the company. Nothing Phone 3a TDRA Certification First spotted by Xpertpick, Nothing Phone 3a is now listed on the UAE’s Telecommunications And Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) certification website bearing the model number A059. It is a mandatory requirement for Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE) to comply with specific technical standards before they can be used, sold or distributed in the UAE. Nothing Phone 3a’s TDRA Listing While the listing does not hint towards any device specification, it confirms the phone’s moniker as Nothing Phone 3a, in line with the teasers shared by the British original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in recent weeks. New Button on Phone 3a This builds upon a recent teaser shared by the company which hints towards the inclusion of a new button on the Phone 3a series. It is speculated to be a quick shutter that activates the camera and enables users to quickly capture photos with a single button press, similar to the Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 models. Alternatively, it could be an alert slider, similar to the one found on devices made by Carl Pei’s former company, OnePlus. Fans also speculate it may have the capability of invoking the voice assistant, in line with Nothing’s plans of betting big on AI. Another speculation is that it could be the company’s own take on Apple’s Action button, having multi-purpose programmable functionality. However, it is important to note that the aforementioned information is based purely on speculation and its purpose is likely to be revealed in the days leading up to Phone 3a series’ launch, which is scheduled for March 4. XRP Price Outlook Grim as Traders Go Short, Exchange Inflows Increase XRP Price Outlook Grim as Traders Go Short, Exchange Inflows Increase Net inflows to spot XRP tokens turned positive early Thursday after days of outflows, putting the token in focus following a record-breaking month for its native decentralized exchange (DEX). Over $15 million in XRP flowed to centralized exchanges on Thursday led by deposits to Bybit and Kraken, Coinglass data shows. Spot inflows to exchanges may mark an intention to sell tokens on the open market, dampening chances of a rally. Meanwhile, 8-hour funding rates in the XRP perpetual futures markets stood at -0.0065% as of Thursday morning, implying a bias for short positions that profit from price drops. Notably, XRP’s funding rates were more negative than ETH and BTC. Negative funding rates mean traders holding short positions are willing to pay a small fee to those with long positions to keep their bearish bets open. XRP trades below several key moving averages, with the 10-day exponential moving average (EMA) at $2.84 and 21-day EMA at $2.88. Trading below these moving averages suggests a bearish short-term outlook. However, the 100-day simple moving average (SMA) is just above $2, and the 200-day SMA is at $1.30, both below the current price, indicating a bullish longer-term trend. Moving averages help identify trends by smoothing out price data, and the ******* readings used above are popularly used by retail traders. Meanwhile, immediate resistance at $2.49, followed by the $2.60 level. A move past these levels would revive the bullish outlook, setting the stage for a run to the $3 mark, which it breached in January for the first time since 2018. XRP’s 14-day relative strength index (RSI) — which measures magnitude of price changes — was just over 36 in Asian hours, placing it in the neutral zone. Traditionally, RSI values above 70 indicate overbought conditions, while values below 30 suggest oversold conditions. An RSI around 50 is considered neutral. Football Manager 25 Cancelled After Multiple Delays Football Manager 25 Cancelled After Multiple Delays Sports Interactive has announced that Football Manager 25 has officially been cancelled. The decision comes after multiple delays of the game for various development reasons. In a post on the game’s website, the studio says they will now shift focus to the next release of the game. “We know this will come as a huge disappointment, especially given that the release date has already moved twice, and you have been eagerly anticipating the first gameplay reveal,” Sports Interactive said. “We can only apologise for the time it has taken to communicate this decision. Due to stakeholder compliance, including legal and financial regulations, today was the earliest date that we could issue this statement.” Originally scheduled to release last fall, Football Manager 25 was then delayed again into March 2025. The delays come, in part, due to the game’s transition from the proprietary Sports Interactive Operating System (SIOS) to the Unity engine. Despite the delays, the team says it didn’t achieve what it was hoping for in multiple areas of the game “despite the phenomenal efforts of our team”. “Whilst many areas of the game have hit our targets, the overarching player experience and interface is not where we need it to be,” they said. “As extensive evaluation has demonstrated, including consumer playtesting, we have clear validation for the new direction of the game and are getting close – however, we’re too far away from the standards you deserve.” They continued by saying the game could’ve still been released “in its current state” while fixing things post launch. However, they didn’t believe it to be the right thing to do for the players who have been supporting the franchise for years. They were also “unwilling” to push the release date any further than March due to it being so late in the current season. Instead, everything will be put towards Football Manager 26. As far as why they didn’t cancel the game earlier, the team says that there was a “strong belief” that they could reach their targets for the game despite the delays. However, more challenges that came up meant that they could no longer achieve their goals. “Through the cancellation, every effort is now focused on ensuring that our next release achieves our goal and hits the quality level we all expect,” they said. “We will update you on how we are progressing with that as soon as we are able to do so.” Players who pre-ordered the game will receive a full refund either through their retailer. How Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger got caught in Trump’s trade war with China How Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger got caught in Trump’s trade war with China China has blacklisted the owner of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, which could force the company to shut down stores and manufacturing in an early repercussion of President Donald Trump’s trade war. China added PVH Corp to its “unreliable entities” list on Tuesday, which allows the ******** government to fine the retailer, prohibit import and export activities, revoke work permits, and deny employees the ability to enter the country, among other deliberately vague powers. While China’s Ministry of Commerce began investigating PVH in September for allegedly refusing to source cotton from the Xinjiang region, which has become notorious for its Uyghur detention camps, Beijing officially placed the company on its blacklist on Tuesday. The announcement came just days after Trump slapped a 10 per cent tariff on imports from China, and came along with a slew of other retaliatory measures against the US, including new duties on energy imports and farm gear. “There’s this ****-for-tat trade war going on, and [China] wants to show the United States that it’s going to take action to hurt either big US companies or companies with significant interests in the US,” said Michael Kaye, a partner at Squire Patton Boggs, who has been practising international trade law for more than 30 years. “They’re being made an example. … My guess is, [China] wanted to pick somebody and they wanted it to be somebody that was high visibility.” Now that PVH is on the unreliable entities list, China could force the company to shut down the dozens of stores that it operates in the region and forbid it from selling its wares to ******** consumers online, said Kaye. Its staff — including those who’ve built lives in China — could be effectively deported and sent home, Kaye added. It is unclear if China would try to enforce actions against PVH in the autonomous region of Hong Kong, where the company’s Asia-Pacific headquarters are. In 2020, China passed a law that gave it more power to enforce national laws in Hong Kong, and that is “particularly the case with laws applicable to national security”, which could include the unreliable entities list, said Kaye. The company still appears to be operating its business as usual in China. China could even prohibit PVH from manufacturing in the region altogether, which could force it to move production to other countries and struggle to meet customer orders. It’s unclear which steps exactly China will take, or if the Trump administration will try to convince China not to punish the company. In a statement, PVH said that it was “surprised and deeply disappointed to learn of the decision from the ******** Ministry of Commerce.” “In our 20 years of operating in China and proudly serving our consumers, as a matter of policy, PVH maintains strict compliance with all relevant laws and regulations and operates in line with established industry standards and practices. We will continue our engagement with relevant authorities and look forward to a positive resolution,” the company said. China represented 6 per cent of PVH’s sales and 16 per cent of its earnings before interest and taxes in 2023, but it relies more heavily on the country for manufacturing, which is the ******* risk to its business. PVH has more factories and suppliers in China than in any other region, representing about 18 per cent of production, according to a disclosure it issued in December. “This has the potential to be very, very disruptive for PVH,” said GlobalData managing director and retail analyst Neil Saunders. “They would certainly have to scramble to find new capacity. They’d be able to do that in time, of course, but the two things that are at issue are that, because a lot of supply chains are just in time, they would probably find that they did get short on inventory whilst they made the transition. The other issue, of course, is quality.” PVH has operated in China for more than 20 years, and while it works with suppliers and factories in more than 30 other countries, the higher-end goods that it makes can be difficult to manufacture elsewhere because of the skill level needed, said Saunders. “While you can shift manufacturing capacity reasonably easily, it’s not so easy to guarantee the quality, guarantee the production processes. Those things take time to upskill,” said Saunders. “China has that capacity and has those skills, because PVH has been operating there for ages. Another country, another manufacturing facility, may not have those skills immediately.” Plus, PVH has viewed China as a growth market and it will now have to look for new strategies to increase sales and profitability as demand falls for its high-end dresses, intimate apparel and sweaters. China’s unreliable entities list is a relatively new law in the country, and experts say it’s deliberately opaque. The government has wide latitude to take action against PVH, but it remains unclear what exactly it will do. Typically, guidance comes within a few days of a company’s placement on the blacklist, said Kaye. China could add PVH to the list and do nothing to the company, but Kaye said the chances of that are “very slim” because the government will want to avoid the perception that it’s backing down. China will more likely use PVH as a bargaining chip at the negotiating table with Trump, and use it as an example to show the power it has to inflict pain on other US businesses with major operations and customer bases in China, such as Nike, Apple, General Motors, Starbucks and others. “There’s a sort of sword of Damocles hanging over [PVH’s] head, and that is exactly what this is, because this isn’t really about PVH at all. This is about PVH being caught in the spat between China and the U.S.,” said Saunders. “China is using PVH as an example to say, look, if tariffs go ahead, if other restrictions are put in place on China, we can make life difficult for US companies in the country. That’s really what this is about.” CNBC Source link #Calvin #Klein #Tommy #Hilfiger #caught #Trumps #trade #war #China Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

New start times for Las Vegas F1 race causes concern among business owners New start times for Las Vegas F1 race causes concern among business owners LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix announced it would have an earlier start time, and some business owners are not happy. It will start at 8:00 p.m. this coming November, and the other days will also start two hours early. For some, it is a welcome change. For others, like the businesses suing Formula 1 and Clark County over lost revenue, it is another wrongdoing. They are worried those earlier start times will bring earlier road closures and make it even more difficult to get to and from work, which could lead to less money coming in. Lisa Mayo-DeRiso, spokesperson for the businesses including Battista’s Hole in the Wall and Jay’s Market, said they were blindsided. “They didn’t talk to any of our business owners about it. I know that for sure,” Mayo-DeRiso said. Mayo-DeRiso took to the podium at a Clark County Commission meeting, telling leaders that some of those business owners lost more money during last year’s race than the first one in 2023. “Jay’s market, I believe, lost more because they put up that bridge,” Mayo-DeRiso said. “So now he was blocked on both sides. I know, Battista’s for the first time in history, actually closed the restaurant a couple of nights.” Right now, they want more communication from the Grand Prix. “I just think there should be transparency and openness and dialog and honesty with this whole entire process, and I don’t believe any of that has existed at all,” Mayo-DeRiso said. F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix sent a statement to 8 News Now, saying: All track session times for the FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX 2025 will begin two hours earlier than the previous year. This adjustment is based on feedback, insights and experience from the first two races, expanding opportunities for fans to explore the destination and continuing to engage with more fans across the US.
