JAN MOIR: Why Meghan is the Marie Antoinette of Montecito with her showy philanthropy JAN MOIR: Why Meghan is the Marie Antoinette of Montecito with her showy philanthropy No, I don’t want to be that person who comments every time the Duchess of Sussex posts on Instagram. Not me, no siree. Yet here I am again, unable to deny the siren call of her irresistible absurdity, drawn to this cyber porthole into Meghan’s psyche like a ghoul slowing down to feast on the gory specifics of a motorway pile-up. On Wednesday, the Marie Antoinette of Montecito took to Instagram for the fourth time since she relaunched herself on the social media site at the start of the year. The themes of the previous three posts could be summed up as Hey, I’m Great; Hey, I’m A Great Cook; and Hey, I’m Still Great But My Dog Is Dead. This time around Meghan was in a strange mood; excited, breathless, exhilarated; patting her heart and her head with the thrill of it all. Clearly, she had big news to impart, but what? Had she and Harry discovered a cure for *******? Did Disney finally get in touch and offer her a voiceover role as Dawn the Prawn in Finding Nemo 3? Apparently not. This is what we learned. In the aftermath of 38,000 acres of California being burnt to ash, 29 deaths, 10,000 made homeless, countless lives and businesses ruined, Meghan gave a little girl a free T-shirt, so everything is OK. Camera IconMeghan Markle is the Marie Antoinette of Montecito. Credit: Matt Baron/BEI/Shutterstock/Matt Baron/BEI/Shutterstock In a protocol which would be unfamiliar to our dear departed Queen Elizabeth II, the Duchess told her 1.6 million Insta followers how “my husband and I visited Altadena”, one of the areas devastated by the wildfires. She met a mother and her daughter (“Oh my gosh, how old are you?”) and learned how the 15-year-old was devastated by the loss of her home and her favourite Billie Eilish T-shirt, which she had bought at a concert by the pop star. It had been incinerated in the fire that engulfed their house. “I don’t know Billie Eilish, but I am going to figure out how to get this T-shirt,” declared the Duchess, as determined as Captain Ahab at the start of his voyage to hunt down Moby *****. Meghan, can I just say something? It’s actually quite easy to find a Billie Eilish T-shirt. You can simply click on to Amazon or – here’s a crazy idea – visit the singer’s official online store. This is frontloaded with Billie-tastic merchandise, along with dozens of different T-shirts and hoodies which you can pay for yourself. Instead, Meghan “reached out” to all her A-list friends, asking if they could pass on the message to Eilish herself. Celebrity Montecito neighbours Adam Levine (Maroon 5 rock star) and his supermodel wife Behati obliged with the connections and a pile of autographed merchandise duly arrived. “It’s signed for her! Huge thank you Billie Eilish. And to Adam Levine and Behati, you guys helped get this over the line,” Meghan gushed on Instagram, in a way that suggested they’d all just raised a billion dollars to combat fire poverty, which is now a Californian thing, although everyone wishes it were not. If you’d like to view this content, please adjust your Cookie Settings. To find out more about how we use cookies, please see our Cookie Guide. Look, I am not denying this was a lovely effort from Meghan; a kindly response to ease the distress of a traumatised teenager. And it is not the only thing she has done behind the scenes in the aftershock of the fires. At a time like this, every little drop of comfort helps and an autograph from a pop heroine, even if it is not personalised, would surely bring cheer to any young victim. The Duchess also expressed her big, blowsy duchessy thanks “to everyone who is showing up for people in big and small ways”. Yes, the implicit royal status Meghan often assumes for herself in her republican exile can be galling, but at least she is doing something at this moment of crisis. As opposed to doing nothing, like the majority of her critics. Yet despite these noble intentions, Meghan – and Harry, too – has an unerring ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Just when you think this ever-so kindly cake-baking, tiara-snaffling, big-hearted, dog-loving, dad-hating dame is not so bad after all, she ruins everything by insisting upon public acknowledgement of her every charitable act. A lunch box, a T-shirt, a hoodie? In Meghan’s world of showy philanthropy, no good deed can go unpublicised. Every benefaction must be trumpeted from the rooftops, usually by Megz herself – and in this instance on her Instagram account. In the brand of performative activism favoured by the Sussexes, one can’t help but be occasionally nauseated by how their support for a good cause is always sublimated by the panting pursuit of an elevated public image – their own. All the money and effort the Sussexes spend on advisers and yet they still blunder into one PR own goal after another; with no one to stop them scampering around the post-catastrophe landscape like entitled fools looking for a photo op. From COVID to Uvalde to the California wildfires and beyond, some have accused the Sussexes of being little more than tragedy tourists spongeing off the tears of others. Perhaps they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. But if the Duchess of Sussex can get so excited about gifting a pile of merch to a single teenager, it makes you wonder what Meghan and Harry’s Archewell Foundation is actually achieving in the philanthropy domain. Meanwhile, in the history of Sussex cringe, this has to be the cringiest cringe in their eternal land of cringe. Iran’s Wacky Aircraft Carrier Has Entered Service Iran’s Wacky Aircraft Carrier Has Entered Service Iran has finally shown a drone taking off and landing on – in the latter case with the help of arresting gear – the deck of the country’s unusual new ‘drone carrier,’ the Shahid Bagheri. Newly emerged imagery also shows various drones and crewed helicopters on the flight deck, which has a ski jump at the bow end, including the appearance of ‘drones’ styled after the infamous Qaher 313. Officially touted as a sea base-like ship, Shahid Bagheri has now been shown launching a small missile boat and is armed itself with cruise missiles along with weapons for self-defense. The new pictures and videos of the Shahid Bagheri were released around a ceremony earlier today marking its formal entry into service with the naval arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The conversion of the ‘carrier’ from a commercial container ship reportedly started in May 2022, and it began sea trials in its new configuration in November of last year. The imagery from today’s ceremony includes footage showing a modified Ababil-3 drone with an arresting hook, which does not appear to retract or otherwise be capable of being stowed during flight, launching from the Shahid Bagheri‘s 590-foot (180-meter) flight deck. What is presumably the same drone is seen in another clip recovering on the deck by catching an arresting wire with its hook. The Ababil-3 also has two small turbojet engines installed, one under each wing, which could provide valuable additional performance for operations from a short flight deck without the aid of a catapult. Something like microjet engines (probably for test) are installed under the Ababil-3 drone wing pylons onboard the IRGCN drone carrier Shahid Bahman Bagheri during the ceremony today. pic.twitter.com/igtzRMsi3x — Mehdi H. (@mhmiranusa) February 6, 2025 How permanent the ‘carrier’ modifications to the Ababil-3 might actually be and whether a more refined design is in the works are unknown. At its core, the Ababil-3 is otherwise a well-established Iranian design in active service in Iran, as well as other operators in the Middle East, including Iranian-backed proxies in the Middle East. The drone is capable of performing surveillance and reconnaissance missions and employing small precision munitions. Video clips show small remote control plane-esque ‘drones,’ styled on Iran’s Qaher 313 aircraft taking off and landing on Shahid Bagheri‘s deck, as well. Larger drones, or mock-ups thereof, with a design in line with the Qaher 313 are also seen on the deck. There are unconfirmed reports that the larger and smaller types are 20 and 60 percent of the size of the original Qaher 313, respectively. Both are seen marked JAS-313 and one of them is seen in a clip being lifted up to the flight deck on an elevator. What actual capabilities they might have are unknown. 2 new drones derived on the Qaher-313 project were unveiled The first, is a 60% scaled version dubbed JAS-313, which likely serves as an armed strike drone Likely has some kind of internal bay for smaller missiles/PGMs pic.twitter.com/PDnXdhRtmv — Iran Defense|نیروهای مسلح جمهوری اسلامی ایران (@IranDefense) February 6, 2025 Another photo of the Iranian JAS-313 drones onboard the IRGCN drone carrier Shahid Bahman Bagheri.Looks like they ran out of the exhaust covers and covered the left one’s exhaust with glue tape and plastic cover. pic.twitter.com/mEqahSz8oa — Mehdi H. (@mhmiranusa) February 6, 2025 The Qaher 313, also known as the Q-313 and F-313, which first appeared publicly in 2013, is itself a dubious and widely ridiculed design that has never flown. Iranian media has shown imagery in the past of a remote control plane-like subscale model of the design, as seen in the video below. In 2023, media outlets in Iran reported that an uncrewed variant or derivative was in development. Subsequent reports claimed that a Qaher 313-derived drone had made its maiden flight last year. Other types of drones are also seen on Shahid Bagheri‘s deck in the imagery from today’s ceremony, such as the Mohajer-6, another popular Iranian design in service in Iran and many other places globally, including now with the Russian armed forces. American-designed Bell Model 206 and Model 212 helicopters, as well as Russian-made Mi-17 Hips, are seen operating from the ship’s flight deck. Despite the aforementioned clip of the aircraft elevator, no views have yet emerged of any internal aircraft hangars. The IRGC Naval Forces have released footage of their new drone-carrier ship, the IRGC Shahid Mahdavi. The ship has been seen on commercial satellite imagery and rather grainy footage before, but this is the first such footage of the deck in use by drones and helicopters. Also,… pic.twitter.com/yDQLx4VPup — OSINTdefender (@sentdefender) February 6, 2025 Beyond its aviation-related capabilities, the new imagery of Shahid Bagheri highlights the ability to launch and recover small boats using davits behind large doors on either side of the hull, as seen below. Using small boats armed with missiles and other weapons in swarms has long been a signature tactic of the IRGC’s naval arm. There are claims that the ship can be used to launch uncrewed surface vessels (USV) and underwater vehicles (UUV). Government of Iran Pictures that have now emerged, as seen below, also show one of Shahid Bagheri‘s boats launching ports being used as a way to connect, via a ramp, to a smaller landing craft-like vessel alongside. In this way, the ‘carrier’ could more rapidly load and unload personnel and materiel, including for onward movement ashore. Government of Iran Government of Iran The Shahid Bagheri has its own onboard armament, including launchers at the aft end that look to be for anti-ship cruise missiles and a turret with what appears to be an automatic cannon at the bow. The ship otherwise has a large open area at the aft end behind its main superstructure that could be used for various purposes, including as an additional flight deck for helicopters and vertical takeoff and landing capable drones, as well as additional missile launchers, especially containerized types. Iranian officials claim the ship has short and medium-range air defenses, as well as electronic warfare and intelligence-gathering capabilities, but any clear evidence thereof is less visible from the imagery that has now emerged. A look at Shahid Bagheri from the rear. Launchers that look to be for anti-ship cruise missiles are seen behind the ship’s main superstructure. Government of Iran A close-up of Shahid Bagheri‘s bow showing the cannon turret. A pair of white-colored systems are also visible on either side of the ski job, but their exact purpose is unclear. Government of Iran We have also not gotten a look at some of the spaces inside Shahid Bagheri, including a medical bay and a gymnasium complete with an astroturf soccer pitch, as well as basketball hoops. Major questions about Shahid Bagheri‘s capabilities do remain. As TWZ has noted in the past, the retention of the original container ship’s main superstructure toward the aft end immediately creates an unusual flight deck arrangement. After images of the ship largely completed emerged last year we wrote: “The fact that the Shahid Bagheri retains the original superstructure, which spans the entire width of the deck, means that a conventional flattop configuration cannot be adopted. Instead, an angled flight deck provides the requisite runway length, presumably for launch and recovery. Adding the angled deck — which extends all the way to the bow ramp — involves the construction of a prominent overhang or flare on the left-hand side of the vessel. In contrast to the satellite image seen below, the angled deck now has white-painted markings applied, showing the margins, which extend to the end of the ramp, as well as the centerline.” … “The dimensions are very tight and the superstructure is located immediately next to the angled deck area, meaning that recovering aircraft, if indeed they plan on recovering aircraft, could hit the superstructure even with a small error in its flight path.” “If the angled deck is used, and aircraft don’t make a full stop after touching down, they will head up the ski jump again, but will they have the power to actually fly off for another attempt? It’s also unclear if the vessel will use arresting wires to bring drones to a stop, or perhaps a barrier recovery system for some type.” We now know that at least some level of arresting gear has been fitted, though it remains unclear if the installation was temporary in nature for the commissioning events and whether more refinements may be coming. So far, the modified Ababil-3 and the smaller of the two JAS-313s are the only fixed-wing craft we have seen use the ship’s flight deck, as well. Government of Iran How Iran might employ the ship remains an open question, though what we have now seen is entirely in line with our past assessments. TWZ previously wrote: “The question of what aircraft will fly from this odd ship is key to understanding the goal of its design. Medium-altitude, long-endurance types seem like ideal candidates, as do vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drones and many of the one-way attack munitions Iran currently fields. Jet-powered, higher-performance drones could potentially call the carrier home, which would help explain some of its features. In this way, the vessel could also be used to launch heavier and longer-range drones, including one-way attack types, which would be an advantage. We just don’t know at this time.“ “Regardless, there is ample space on the side opposite the angled deck extension for many types of drones and other modular weaponry. The aft deck behind the superstructure could field helicopters or smaller catapult and net/line-recovered drone types too. Cruise missiles launched from containers on trailers or trucks are another option and something that Iran already has experience of using.“ … “While it wouldn’t necessarily be expected to launch its drones against U.S. and allied warships and other assets in the region in some sustained manner, the Shahid Bagheri could conceivably wreak havoc on commercial shipping, including more opportunistic attacks against poorly defended targets, even for a brief *******.“ … “Having the ability to launch drones, especially one-way attack drones, from a dedicated drone carrier could be beneficial in some scenarios against some enemies, as well as for ‘gray zone’ attacks. It remains very questionable, however, how long the Shahid Bagheri would survive were it to be used in an offensive capacity like this. The fact that it can deploy these capabilities, potentially anywhere around the globe, also gives it a unique place in Iran’s military portfolio. While it may not survive long after doing so, being able to threaten targets far beyond its current reach using weapons launched from its own country or by its proxies certainly seems like an asymmetric play Iran would go for, regardless of its actually tactical relevance.“ Government of Iran The Shahid Bagheri does also join a number of other one-off sea base-like ships with aviation and other capabilities already in service with the IRGC and the regular Iranian Navy. Iran has also used modified commercial vessels as covert motherships to coordinate attacks, including by regional proxies, and to conduct intelligence-gathering missions. In addition, Shahid Bagheri carries significant symbolic value for Iran, which regularly rails against U.S. Navy carriers and other warships operating near the country in the Persian Gulf. In turn, Iranian officials have increasingly sought to mount long-distance naval deployments, including in the Western Hemisphere. It is claimed that Shahid Bagheri has an operational range of 22,000 nautical miles, which, while dubious, is in line with these more global ambitions. Whatever actual capabilities Shahid Bagheri offers, it does also reflect a real global trend toward the construction of new big deck warships heavily focused on drone operations, as well as the conversion of existing vessels into differing degrees of ‘drone carrier.’ Countries that operate traditional flattops, including the United States, are increasingly looking to expand the uncrewed components of their carrier air wings, as well. With Shahid Bagheri now officially commissioned into IRGC service, we are likely to start seeing more of what it can actually do and how the Iranians intend to employ it. Hamtramck teacher falls off lift during school trip Hamtramck teacher falls off lift during school trip The Brief A Michigan teacher is recovering in the hospital after falling from a ski lift. Another teacher said their students were shocked by the incident. Officials say she fell 20 feet. HOLLY, Mich. (FOX 2) – A fun day of skiing for a group of students at Mt. Holly Ski Resort turned into panic Wednesday after a teacher took a huge fall from a ski lift at Mt. Holly. What we know That teacher from a school in Hamtramck is recovering after the freak accident. FOX 2 heard that the teacher is expected to be okay. Another teacher, Terry Christensen, was chaperoning a school trip of boys from Frontier International Academy in Hamtramck. He says he rushed over to the scene. “I was going up the middle lift on one of the intermediate runs and I saw the ski patrol down on the hill. And I said, well, it can’t be any of my students because they’re on beginner passes,” he said. “I was just thinking ‘I hope it’s not her. I really hope it’s not her.’ And I went right over her and I saw her, she was being helped by multiple people.” Then, the ski patrol told him his fellow teacher and chaperon fell 20 feet off the ski lift. “At first it was a little bit of a shock but once I talked them down and said listen, it’s a freak accident,” he said. “Things happen out here. You just gotta stay safe at all times. Anything can happen. Even if you think you’re paying attention and that everything’s all good, something could happen out of nowhere.” Groveland Township Fire Department arrived on the scene immediately after they received the call. They treated the woman with help from Michigan State Police. Officials say she was taken to the hospital with potentially severe traumatic injuries. Meanwhile, Christensen says she’s recovering with her mom by her side, which gave the boys some relief. “They knew that she was getting the care she needed, and they were able to have a lot of fun still,” he said. “It was a successful trip. Things happen and it’s unfortunate. I wish her a speedy recovery.” Mt. Holly remained open throughout the incident. What we don’t know There has so far been no word on the kind of injuries the woman suffered, but police say she is recovering. Indianapolis homebuilder settles lawsuit alleging it restricted negative reviews Indianapolis homebuilder settles lawsuit alleging it restricted negative reviews (This story was updated to add new information.) A major Indianapolis homebuilder has settled a lawsuit brought by the state of Indiana alleging that the company threatened fines against any homebuyer who publicly shared negative statements about the company. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita accused Davis Homes of including a “gag clause” in contracts that would impose a $2,000 per day fine on any homebuyer who made “statements to the media, on social media, the internet, or neighbors which portray (Davis) in a negative light,” according to court documents. Davis Homes, an Indianapolis-based builder run by CEO Bradley Davis, says it has built more than 25,000 homes across the state. Todd Rokita gives remarks after he takes the oath of office as the Indiana Attorney General, Monday, Jan. 13, 2025 at the Hilbert Circle Theatre. The federal Consumer Review Fairness Act of 2016 outlaws contract clauses that suppress criticism of a seller’s goods and services. The law also bans penalties for negative comments or reviews. Davis Homes agreed to the settlement while admitting no wrongdoing and denied the state’s allegation that the company violated federal law, according to a Thursday press release from the attorney general’s office. Davis Homes did, however, sign an agreement with the state saying it won’t interfere with customers’ freedom to share negative reviews. The company will stop including the alleged “gag clause” in new contracts and will not enforce the provision with past homebuyers, under the settlement agreement. The provision restricting homebuyers from speaking poorly of Davis Homes was included only in some agreements for custom homes, a company spokeswoman said in a statement to IndyStar Thursday. The builder has never charged a homebuyer for the associated $2,000 per day penalty, the statement said. Davis Homes stopped using the clause altogether early last year, according to the statement. “Davis Homes seeks to have an open dialogue with clients from the moment we meet through the final inspection and closing,” the statement concludes, “and remains open to discussing clients’ experiences throughout the homebuilding process.” How to file a complaint if you’re an Indiana resident Any Indiana consumers who signed a contract that contains a similar clause restricting or penalizing negative reviews of a business can file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Division of the Indiana attorney general’s office at IndianaConsumer.com or by calling 1-800-382-5516. Family offices in Singapore are pushing charitable giving
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Family offices in Singapore are pushing charitable giving Family offices in Singapore are pushing charitable giving Charitable giving from foundations and family offices in Singapore is funding educational, healthcare and poverty projects in the region and beyond. Roslan Rahman | Afp | Getty Images A presence of more Bentleys and Porsches on the roads is just one sign of the number of wealthy individuals, and their private investment companies, that have come to Singapore from around the world. Schools, charities and social enterprises are also flourishing, fueled by generous donations from these affluent newcomers. Their presence can be seen on many fronts. The Low Tuck Kwong Foundation, named after the billionaire founder of Indonesia’s Bayan Resources, topped the list of Singapore-based donors in 2023 — the latest year for which comparative data is available — when it gave 127.6 million Singapore dollars (around $94 million) to educational and healthcare causes, according to the social impact consultancy Soristic. The bulk of the funds went to the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, a postgraduate institution that is part of the National University of Singapore. In addition to broad-impact initiatives such as education, healthcare and poverty alleviation, donors are also backing specialized causes such as marine conservation. Dalio Philanthropies, which is supported by the family office of hedge fund titan Ray Dalio, last year sponsored a three-week program for nearly 400 youth and educators in Singapore to learn about ocean science and maritime operations. Family offices, which are private firms established by wealthy individuals and families to manage their finances, play a key role in this philanthropic wave. The Dalio Family Office, headquartered in Westport, Connecticut, announced plans to open a satellite office in Singapore in 2020 to oversee its investments and philanthropy in Asia. Dalio Philanthropies is also part of the Philanthropy Asia Alliance’s Blue Oceans initiative, which brings organizations together to support ocean and marine conservation in Asia. The alliance is supported by Temasek Trust, the philanthropic arm of Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings. Other members of the Philanthropy Asia Alliance include the Jollibee Group Foundation and the Tanoto Foundation, the latter founded by RGE chairman Sukanto Tanoto. Stacy Choong, a partner at the international law firm Withersworldwide, attributed the rise in philanthropic activities to several factors including the increasing concentration of wealth in Singapore, favorable regulations and tax incentives, and the desire by high net-worth individuals to give back to society. The city-state’s reputation for good governance is also a draw. “People want the assurance that their trusts and foundations will be managed responsibly and effectively once they are no longer around,” said Choong, who advises clients on estate planning and philanthropic initiatives. Singapore as a philanthropy hub According to the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the city-state now hosts more than 2,000 single-family offices — up from 200 in 2019. The government aims to build on this momentum by encouraging more family offices to channel their regional and global philanthropic efforts through Singapore. Already, several Singapore-based foundations support initiatives that extend far beyond Asia. The Chandler Institute of Governance conducts customized training for over 500 government leaders annually throughout Africa and Asia, while the Ishk Tolaram Foundation’s activities include providing skills training and prosthetic limbs in Nigeria. “What has shifted in the last couple of years is that the Singapore government is driving to become Asia’s philanthropic hub,” said Anthonia Hui, a philanthropist and keen supporter of the performing arts who moved from Hong Kong to Singapore in 2000. W!ldrice, a popular local theater group, counts Hui and her husband among its biggest supporters. Hui, who has a background in wealth management, said financial advisors did not automatically include philanthropy as part of their conversations with clients in the past, but more are doing so now because of government incentives. These include a 100% tax deduction on funds donated overseas if certain conditions are met, according to the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Measurement issues Assessing the true size of Singapore’s philanthropic sector is challenging because of the many ways donors can give. Soristic estimates total giving by Singapore-registered privately funded philanthropic organizations reached SG$431 million in 2023, almost double the total for 2022. Charitable foundations whose principals amassed most of their wealth outside Singapore accounted for three of the top 10 donors: the Low Tuck Kwong Foundation, the Tanoto Foundation and the Moh Family Foundation, which was set up by the family of the late furniture tycoon, Laurence Moh, who made his fortune in the United States. The 117 organizations that Soristic monitors exclude philanthropic groups primarily funded by public donations or government sources, as well as those with political or religious affiliations, according to its website. Its data also does not include family offices that allocate part of their resources to philanthropy or privately managed funds that are not registered as charities or grantmakers in Singapore. Looking ahead, Withersworldwide’s Choong said Singapore’s philanthropic ecosystem benefits from a network effect. Besides the numerous donors based in the city-state, there are also organizations such as the Community Foundation of Singapore and The Majurity Trust that will help match potential donors with vetted initiatives. As Singapore cements its status as a global wealth hub, it is also emerging as a powerhouse for philanthropy, where fortunes are not just preserved but put to work for the greater good, industry players said. DeepSeek can be a force multiplier for smaller AI chip firms DeepSeek can be a force multiplier for smaller AI chip firms DeepSeek has rattled the U.S.-led AI ecosystem with its latest model, shaving hundreds of billions in chip leader Nvidia’s market cap. While the sector leaders grapple with the fallout, smaller AI companies see an opportunity to scale with the ******** startup. Several AI-related firms told CNBC that DeepSeek’s emergence is a “massive” opportunity for them, rather than a threat. “Developers are very keen to replace OpenAI’s expensive and closed models with open source models like DeepSeek R1…” said Andrew Feldman, CEO of artificial intelligence chip startup Cerebras Systems. The company competes with Nvidia’s graphic processing units and offers cloud-based services through its own computing clusters. Feldman said the release of the R1 model generated one of Cerebras’ largest-ever spikes in demand for its services. “R1 shows that [AI market] growth will not be dominated by a single company — hardware and software moats do not exist for open-source models,” Feldman added. Open source refers to software in which the source code is made freely available on the web for possible modification and redistribution. DeepSeek’s models are open source, unlike those of competitors such as OpenAI. DeepSeek also claims its R1 reasoning model rivals the best American tech, despite running at lower costs and being trained without cutting-edge graphic processing units, though industry watchers and competitors have questioned these assertions. “Like in the PC and internet markets, falling prices help fuel global adoption. The AI market is on a similar secular growth path,” Feldman said. Inference chips DeepSeek could increase the adoption of new chip technologies by accelerating the AI cycle from the training to “inference” phase, chip start-ups and industry experts said. Inference refers to the act of using and applying AI to make predictions or decisions based on new information, rather than the building or training of the model. “To put it simply, AI training is about building a tool, or algorithm, while inference is about actually deploying this tool for use in real applications,” said Phelix Lee, an equity analyst at Morningstar, with a focus on semiconductors. While Nvidia holds a dominant position in GPUs used for AI training, many competitors see room for expansion in the “inference” segment, where they promise higher efficiency for lower costs. AI training is very compute-intensive, but inference can work with less powerful chips that are programmed to perform a narrower range of tasks, Lee added. A number of AI chip startups told CNBC that they were seeing more demand for inference chips and computing as clients adopt and build on DeepSeek’s open source model. “[DeepSeek] has demonstrated that smaller open models can be trained to be as capable or more capable than larger proprietary models and this can be done at a fraction of the cost,” said Sid Sheth, CEO of AI chip start-up d-Matrix. “With the broad availability of small capable models, they have catalyzed the age of inference,” he told CNBC, adding that the company has recently seen a surge in interest from global customers looking to speed up their inference plans. Robert Wachen, co-founder and COO of AI chipmaker Etched, said dozens of companies have reached out to the startup since DeepSeek released its reasoning models. “Companies are 1738900263 shifting their spend from training clusters to inference clusters,” he said. “DeepSeek-R1 proved that inference-time compute is now the [state-of-the-art] approach for every major model vendor and thinking isn’t cheap – we’ll only need more and more compute capacity to scale these models for millions of users.” Jevon’s Paradox Analysts and industry experts agree that DeepSeek’s accomplishments are a boost for AI inference and the wider AI chip industry. “DeepSeek’s performance appears to be based on a series of engineering innovations that significantly reduce inference costs while also improving training cost,” according to a report from Bain & Company. “In a bullish scenario, ongoing efficiency improvements would lead to cheaper inference, spurring greater AI adoption,” it added. This pattern explains Jevon’s Paradox, a theory in which cost reductions in a new technology drive increased demand. Financial services and investment firm Wedbush said in a research note last week that it continues to expect the use of AI across enterprise and retail consumers globally to drive demand. Speaking to CNBC’s “Fast Money” last week, Sunny Madra, COO at Groq, which develops chips for AI inference, suggested that as the overall demand for AI grows, smaller players will have more room to grow. “As the world is going to need more tokens [a unit of data that an AI model processes] Nvidia can’t supply enough chips to everyone, so it gives opportunities for us to sell into the market even more aggressively,” Madra said. Argentina canal on outskirts of Buenos Aires turns bright red Argentina canal on outskirts of Buenos Aires turns bright red A canal in a suburb of Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires turned bright red on Thursday, alarming local residents. Pictures and videos show the intensely coloured water flowing into an estuary, the Rio de la Plata, which borders an ecological reserve. Local media reports suggest the colour may have been caused by the dumping of textile dye, or by chemical waste from a nearby depot. The Environment Ministry said in a statement that water samples had been taken from the Sarandí canal to determine the cause of the colour change. By late afternoon the colour of the water had lost some of its intensity, the AFP news agency reported. Residents have claimed that many local companies dispose of toxic waste in the waterway, which runs through an area of leather processing and textile factories some 10km (6 miles) from the centre of the capital. A resident, a woman called Silvia, told local news channel C5N that although it is has turned red now, “other times it was yellow, with an acidic smell that makes us sick even in the throat”. “I live a block from the stream. Today, it has no smell. There are not many factories in the area, although there are warehouses.” Another resident, Maria Ducomls, told AFP industries in the region dump waste in the water, and said she had seen it coloured differently in the past – “bluish, a little green, pink, a little lilac, with grease on top”. 2026 Porsche Cayenne Coupe EV Spied Wearing Aerodynamic Bodywork 2026 Porsche Cayenne Coupe EV Spied Wearing Aerodynamic Bodywork Spied: Porsche Cayenne Coupe EV Has Sleek Roofline KGP Photography – Car and Driver The 2026 Porsche Cayenne EV has been spotted testing in Zuffenhausen, Germany. This prototype sports a sloping roofline, suggesting that a Cayenne Coupe EV will be in the cards. The Cayenne EV will use the same 800-volt PPE architecture as the Macan EV that’s already on *****. Despite sales of the Porsche Taycan declining by a drastic 37 percent in the United States in 2024, the ******* automaker is pushing ahead with its EV plans. Sales of the Macan EV, expected to be the main volume model, are already underway, and a reveal of the electric 718 sports car seems likely sometime this year. After that, Porsche’s next move is an electric sibling for the Cayenne SUV. Now, our spy photographer has caught a disguised prototype of the Cayenne EV testing on public roads in Zuffenhausen, Germany, implying that development is well underway. KGP Photography – Car and Driver While the test mule wears some camouflage, it can’t hide the sloping roofline that indicates the Cayenne’s coupe body style will also migrate to the EV variant. Until now, there was no indication there would be a sloped-roof version of Porsche’s mid-size luxury SUV. We’re almost certain the Cayenne EV will come with both a normal, boxier body as well as this sleek coupe-like setup. The Cayenne EV’s styling appears to continue the same themes as the Macan EV. The somewhat rectangular *********** house four thin LED elements and sit high on the front fascia. The bumper below is obscured but appears to feature a wide vent at the bottom for cooling the batteries. The taillights also take on a rectilinear shape but interestingly don’t appear to connect to form a light bar, which would break from the design language seen on nearly every modern Porsche, including the gas-powered Cayenne. The photos of the Cayenne EV turning also show that the SUV appears to feature rear-axle steering, which should make it nimbler. Porsche first confirmed the impending arrival of an electric Cayenne and said it would follow the 718 EV, but rumored delays to the electric sports cars could switch up the cadence of how they’re introduced. The Cayenne EV is set to be built on the 800-volt Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, which also underpins the Macan EV, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Audi A6 e-tron. Story continues The Cayenne EV is due to arrive at some point in 2026, although it may not go on ***** in the United States until closer to 2027. The electric SUV will be offered alongside the gas-powered Cayenne, which received a comprehensive update for the 2024 model year. Last year, Porsche said hybrid and pure internal-combustion versions of the Cayenne would last into the 2030s and also said it was recommitted to the development of gas powertrains. Frontier passenger overpowered after punching out plane window during a flight after he was asked to move seat Frontier passenger overpowered after punching out plane window during a flight after he was asked to move seat A passenger aboard a Frontier Airlines flight to Houston had a violent outburst on Wednesday after being asked to move, punching and kicking in his seat until he cracked one layer of the plane’s window mid-flight. Houston police said they were notified there was a “combative passenger on board” flight F9 4856 out of Denver, but declined to name the man because the airline has thus far reportedly declined to press charges. Officers met the plane at the gate and were seen taking a restrained man away in a wheelchair. The incident began when someone asked the man to move seats, passenger Victoria Clark told a Houston ABC station. “The lady in front of the gentlemen asked to move seats, and right when she did, he started kicking profusely and started punching the window,” Clark said. “He was scary,” she added. There were no police or air marshals on the plane, passengers said, so travelers including a military veteran leapt in to detain the man, using zip ties and shoe laces. “Hearing the stewardess walk down the aisles screaming, ‘Does anybody have a belt? Does anybody have shoe string, was absolutely terrifying,’” passenger Chloe Starcevic told Good Morning America. Passengers photographed a broken window with nearby blood stains on the flight. The FBI is involved in investigating the incident, KHOU reports. The incident comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of safety conditions in the U.S. aviation system. Last week, an American Airlines regional jet collided midair with a U.S. Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, killing 67 people. Just days later, a medical jet carrying a girl who traveled to the U.S. for medical treatment crashed shortly after taking off from Philadelphia, landing in a busy residential area. Meanwhile, in Seattle, a Japan Airlines jet hit a Delta plane as the aircraft were taxiing on the runway. Federal officials are investigating all three accidents.
