Mixed consumer spending and weak factory activity in China suggest deflationary pressures are likely to persist. Momentum and trend have turned positive for the Hang Seng Index in the medium term. This is a follow-up analysis of our prior report, “Hang Seng Index: Transforming into a medium-term bearish trend despite improving Services PMI from China” dated 8 January 2025. . Since our last publication, the has declined and started to reverse upwards in the middle of January after it almost hit the first medium-term support zone of 18,430/17,990 (printed a low of 18,671 on 13 January). Hang Seng Index Outperformance Over Major US Stock Indices Fig 1: 1-month rolling performances of Hong Kong & US major CFD stock indices as of 11 Feb 2025 (Source: TradingView) Interestingly, Hang Seng stock indices (a proxy for international investors and traders to get exposure to China equities) have outperformed the major US stock indices on a one-month rolling basis at this time of the writing according to the prices of contract for difference (CFD) stock indices on these markets offered by OANDA. The Hong Kong 33 CFD stock index (a representation of the Hang Seng Index) has started to outperform against the gravity-defying major US CFD stock indices. which have ridden on the tailwinds of the “Artificial Intelligence (AI) induced high productivity” theme play in the past year. Based on a one-month rolling performance basis, the Hong Kong 33 CFD stock index has recorded a gain of 13.60%, three times more than the average return of 4% seen on the technology mega-cap heavy and CFD stock indices over the same ******* (see Fig 1). Several catalysts drove the recent positive performance of the Hang Seng benchmark stock indices (Hang Seng Index, & ) in the recent four weeks. Firstly, the emergence of a relatively under-the-radar China AI start-up, DeepSeek that operated based on open-source large language models that can perform almost on par with current generative AI leader OpenAI at significantly lower operating costs without much dependency on higher-end and pricey US-based Nvidia’s graphics processing unit (GPU) semiconductor chips. Hence, market participants have started to reprice the earnings growth expectations of the US mega-cap technology stocks that are trading at lofty valuations over China Big Tech AI equities that have now developed cutting-edge technology capabilities at lower costs despite US trade barriers and sanctions on higher-end semiconductor hardware towards China. Secondly, it is related to geopolitical factors. Trade War 2.0 is different from Trade War 1.0 enacted in January 2018 in terms of coverage as this time round it involves major trading partners of the US, on top of the ongoing US-China rivalry. Countries that have a significant trade surplus with the US will be at risk of being targeted by Trump’s trade tariffs policy; the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and ASEAN export-dependent countries such as Vietnam, and Malaysia. Hence, long-term allies of the US hit with trade tariffs may be swayed to “join” China’s sphere of influence, which in turn, drives foreign fixed asset investment inflows into China that may benefit China’s economy in the long run. Deflation Risk Persists in China Fig 2: China’s consumer inflation & PPI trend as of January 2025 (Source: TradingView) China’s latest consumer inflation for January has accelerated to 0.5% y/y, its fastest rate of increase in five months, core inflation excluding food and energy rose at a slightly higher rate of 0.6% y/y while producer price deflation persisted as the producer price index continued to languish at -2.3% y/y in January amid weak factory demand (see Fig 2). In addition, the offshore yuan (CNH) continued to face downside pressure against the US dollar The has rallied back up from a nine-week low of 7.2344 and is trading at 7.3120 at this time of the writing with its October 2023 high of 7.3750 coming into view. Therefore, deflationary pressures persist in China unless policymakers are willing to implement direct stimulus measures to jolt up consumer and business sentiment. In addition, the MACD trend indicator has continued to accelerate upwards above its centreline above a prior bullish divergence condition. These observations suggest that the Hang Seng Index is likely to have transformed into a medium-term (multi-week to multi-month) uptrend phase. Watch the 19,700 medium-term pivotal support and a clearance above 22,690/23,240 may see the next medium-term resistance zone coming in at 24,400/980 (see Fig 3). On the flip side, failure to hold above 19,700 jeopardizes the bullish tone for another round of corrective decline to retest the next medium-term support zone of 18,430/17,990 (also the 200-day moving average). If you buy through affiliate links, we may earn commissions, which help support our testing. ***** Supersonic has a change to its flight plan that might also suggest a change to its name is also in order: a “boomless cruise” option in which its planned Overture supersonic airliner would fly a little faster than the speed of sound without a sonic ***** reaching the ground. The Denver startup announced this advance on the morning of the second and final supersonic flight of its XB-1 technology demonstrator out of California’s Mojave Air & Space Port. Two weeks ago, that single-seat, three-engine aircraft became the first independently developed plane to break Mach 1 in level flight. On Monday, ***** CEO Blake Scholl revealed that XB-1’s pioneering Jan. 28 flight had also successfully tested the boomless-cruise concept. “We broke the sound barrier not once, not twice, but actually three times—each time without making an audible sonic *****,” Scholl said on *****’s livestream. “It’s about how you fly the airplane.” As a post on *****’s site explains, boomless cruise exploits a phenomenon called Mach cutoff, when the sonic ***** generated by high-altitude flight at speeds not too far past Mach 1 “refracts upward due to temperature and wind gradients affecting the local speed of sound.” A NASA study (PDF) of a series of test flights in 2012 with an F-18 fighter jet established that boomless operation was doable with precise measurements and flying: “Airplane speed and altitude will have to be controlled, and real-time atmospheric conditions will have to be monitored, each to great accuracy.” Monday’s XB-1 flight, the last planned for that jet, saw it exceed Mach 1 three times without a ***** being detected by microphones set up on the desert floor below. At typical speeds between Mach 1.1 and 1.2, ***** says boomless cruise on Overture could knock “up to 90 minutes” off a flight from New York to Los Angeles, typically six or so hours. To make this doable in routine operation by that four-engine airliner, ***** is banking on the Symphony engines now under development by a consortium of outside manufacturers, which it says will allow Overture to wait to exceed Mach 1 until it’s above 30,000 feet, plus “an advanced autopilot” to calculate the right boomless speed for weather conditions. ***** is not the first startup to plan on exploiting Mach cutoff for quiet overland supersonic flight: That was part of the plan for Aerion’s AS2 business jet until that firm shut down in May 2021, citing funding difficulties. But ***** is also banking on a change in the US regulations that today ban civil supersonic flight over land. “We look forward to working with regulators to update these regulations to unlock Boomless supersonic flight over land,” Scholl wrote at the end of a thread on X Monday morning in which he also joked about renaming the company to “Shhh Supersonic.” Those regulations have no noise threshold, even as both private and government ambitions for quieter supersonic flight have slowly advanced. For example, the X-59 test plane Lockheed Martin is building for NASA’s Quesst project to test low-***** aerodynamics. “This is a small regulatory change that could drive enormous economic growth,” emailed Eli Dourado, chief economist at the Abundance Institute, a Salt Lake City nonprofit that advocates for emerging technologies. “It would drive industry investment in high-speed technologies and signal the start of the supersonic age.” In 2016—prior to a 2.5-year stint working on policy at *****—Dourado wrote a paper (PDF) with Samuel Hammond for George Mason University’s Mercatus Center urging liberalization of those Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The two argued that advances in composite airframe construction would allow lighter supersonic aircraft that would generate less of a ***** than the pioneering Concorde airliner, recommending that the FAA rewrite those rules to restrict sound, not speed. *****’s plans for overwater flights by Overture—a delta-winged airliner that will accommodate from 64 to 80 business-class passengers—still involve cruising at up to Mach 1.7. Those speeds will send a sonic ***** all the way down to the waves but allow Overture to cut flight times between New York and London to roughly 3.5 hours, about half of today’s travel times of six to eight hours between Newark or JFK and Heathrow. United Airlines signed an order for 15 Overtures in 2021 and American Airlines inked an order for 20 of these jets in 2022, but no other airlines have placed firm orders for Overture since. And ***** first has to build this plane and test it to the satisfaction of aviation regulators in the US and the EU. On *****’s stream Monday, Scholl said the company will quickly move to finalize designs of Overture and then its engines. “We’re literally about a week away from calling design freeze on Overture, we’ll be calling design freeze on our Symphony engines in March,” he said. Then ***** plans to start constructing the first Overture in 18 months and roll it out of its Greensboro, N.C., factory in about three years. “Our goal is to be ready for passengers by the end of 2029,” Scholl said. But staying anywhere close to that schedule will require a level of precise accomplishment in construction and testing—and in completing the painstaking work of regulatory certification—that seems likely to make boomless supersonic flight look easy. Hot Chili drilling confirms Chilean copper-gold porphyry find Hot Chili drilling confirms Chilean copper-gold porphyry find Hot Chili has unveiled a series of stunning drill intervals including 320 metres grading 0.3 per cent copper and 0.1 grams per tonne (g/t) gold from 34m and ending in mineralisation, at its La Verde porphyry discovery in South America. La Verde is part of the company’s Domeyko project, sitting at low elevation in Chile’s Atacama coastal region. The company says the latest drill results confirm a major copper-gold porphyry discovery, with the potential to become its third seriously big play in a nation known for being the global leader in copper production. Results from an additional 10 reverse circulation (RC) drill holes delivered a series of wide intervals, with multiple hits greater than 100m. Every hole intersected porphyry-style copper-gold mineralisation. Broad intersections of consistent mineralisation extend for more than 300m vertically and begin from shallow depths. A succession of thick hits included 200m going 0.4pc copper and 0.1g/t gold from 48m to end of hole, with a 38m section coming in at a higher-grade 0.5pc copper and 0.2g/t gold from 68m. The next widest hole saw 172m at 0.4pc copper and 0.2g/t gold from 48m, which included a 20m slice running at 0.5pc copper and 0.2g/t gold from a depth of 62m, and a higher-grade 32m going 0.6pc copper and 0.2g/t gold from 232m. Notably, assays from eight of the 12 holes plunged into its ground ended in mineralisation at the depth capability of the drill rig. Hot Chili has now commenced a step-out drilling program to test for mineralised intercepts outside the known porphyry area, which has the potential to substantially increase the footprint of the current 550m-by-400m area. It says the area remains open in all directions and a gravel cover may be masking a much ******* porphyry system. This discovery has all the signs of becoming our third bulk-tonnage, copper-gold deposit and is open in all directions and growing fast. We’re also preparing to deploy AI-powered exploration to fast-track our nearby exploration growth pipeline, leveraging 16 years of expertise in Chile. The latest results add to previous head-turning assays of a 308m stretch grading 0.5pc copper and 0.3g/t gold from 46m, including a higher-grade component of 100m at 0.7pc copper and 0.3g/t gold. Drilling has hammered 19 holes thus far for 5700m, with assays for a further seven holes pending. Geological logging has confirmed the presence of porphyry host rock featuring porphyry-style veining in each pending hole. Management is planning a deeper diamond drill program to test the potential for greater than a 1km vertical depth. This is similar to recent porphyry discoveries, such as its Costa Fuego project’s Cortadera find and BHP/Lundin Mining’s Filo del Sol discovery, which has a strike length of more than 4.5km and extends to a depth of almost 1.5km. The company is also yet to test below the historical copper oxide open pit, providing a significant target beneath the historic workings. La Verde sits about 30km south of Costa Fuego’s planned central processing hub, so it is ideally positioned to potentially add further feed to the proposed mill should it develop into a mining operation. In the near term, Hot Chili is feverishly pushing ahead to complete a pre-feasibility study for both its Costa Fuego and Huasco Water projects. Costa Fuego comprises the Cortadera, Productora, Alice and San Antonio deposits and is regarded as one of the better undeveloped copper resources globally. It has a mammoth combined resource of 798 million tonnes grading 0.45 per cent copper equivalent for 2.9 million tonnes of copper, 2.6 million ounces of gold, 12.9m ounces of silver and 68,000t of molybdenum. The Huasco Water project has the potential to provide a long-term, regional multi-user seawater and desalination water supply network for the Huasco valley area in the southern Atacama region. It is part of a joint-venture agreement with Compañía Minera del Pacífico, with Hot Chili holding 80pc of the project. It lies about 600km north of the Santiago capital. The plan is to target the region’s critical water needs through a multi-staged approach involving seawater intake and desalination. The company appears to be in an enviable financial position, with cash at the end of last year sitting at a solid $19 million. Hot Chili appears to be on the verge of boosting its massive copper-gold resource to another level at a time when market pundits are predicting a copper shortage in coming years and gold is experiencing a price *****. Starting in January, Ackman and his team strategically acquired 30.3 million shares of Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER). Those shares are worth over $2.3 billion as of this writing, as the news of Ackman’s position sent shares higher. Based on Pershing Square’s positions disclosed in its most recent 13-F filing (as of Sept. 30) with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Uber could now be Pershing Square’s largest equity holding. Image source: Getty Images. In a post on X revealing his position, Ackman praised Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. He said Khosrowshahi “has done a superb job in transforming the company into a highly profitable and cash-generative growth machine.” Indeed, since getting behind the wheel as Uber CEO in 2017, the company has gone from burning $1.5 billion in cash per year to generating over $7 billion in operating cash flow in 2024. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) went from negative $2.6 billion in 2017 to positive $6.5 billion in 2024. It’s also been profitable on a generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) basis since 2023. And Ackman thinks there’s still a lot of growth left to come for Uber. “Remarkably, it can still be purchased at a massive discount to its intrinsic value,” he wrote. Even after the increase in share price following Ackman’s announcement, Uber shares trade for an enterprise value of 0.9 times its 2024 gross bookings. Management expects gross bookings to grow 18% in the first quarter of 2025 as well. Enterprise value-to-EBITDA, a more traditional valuation measure, has shares trading at a multiple of less than 18 times analysts’ 2025 expectations. Management expects 30% to 37% growth in EBITDA in the first quarter. Uber’s management has done a great job of steering the company toward profitability and driving it forward. The stock valuation looks attractive as well. Importantly, it has a big competitive advantage that should protect it from competition entering the market in the future. One thing Khosrowshahi has done at Uber is transform the company from a company focused primarily on ride-sharing to one that matches customers with drivers to move anything from point A to point B. The company also folded Uber Eats into the main Uber app and made several strategic acquisitions in delivery and logistics. Story Continues The results have been phenomenal. Since Khosrowshahi took over in 2017, Uber has grown from 62 million monthly active platform consumers to 171 million as of the end of 2024. That customer base has attracted more restaurants, stores, and drivers to its platform, in turn making Uber more useful for customers and spinning the flywheel faster. As a result, it’s taken share from smaller rival Lyft over the last few years despite already being much larger. And Uber’s size advantage should continue to push its market share higher. There’s a good reason Uber’s valuation is higher than Lyft’s. Many see autonomous vehicles (AVs) as a threat to Uber, but Uber’s position as the ride-hailing app could make it an indispensable part of the AV ecosystem. If a company like Alphabet’s Waymo wants to serve a new market, its easiest path forward is to partner with Uber. And that’s exactly what it’s doing this year in Austin and Atlanta. There’s no need for an AV company to partner with a smaller network operator like Lyft. So, not only does Uber look undervalued based on its current position in the ride-sharing industry, but it could also see its position cemented as the market shifts to more AVs in search of riders. A 66-year-old Spokane man who was driving the bus was killed, along with a 17-year-old female driver and a 17-year-old male passenger in the Camry, both from East Wenatchee, the Washington State Patrol said. A bus passenger died later at a hospital. Seven others, ages 24 to 71, were hurt in the ****** and taken to local hospitals, troopers said. The car also hit and damaged the car it was trying to pass, but no one inside that vehicle was hurt, according to the state patrol. Jacob Price, owner of the Spokane-based bus company, said the ****** happened during a scheduled route between Seattle and Spokane. He said about 20 people were on the bus.
