  4. TikTok says data of four dead British teens may have been erased TikTok says data of four dead British teens may have been erased Getty Images A TikTok executive has said that data being sought by a group of parents who believe their children died while attempting a trend they saw on the platform may have been erased. They are suing TikTok and its parent company Bytedance over the deaths of Isaac Kenevan, Archie Battersbee, Julian “Jools” Sweeney and Maia Walsh – all aged between 12 and 13. The lawsuit claims the children died trying the “blackout challenge”, in which a person intentionally deprives themselves of oxygen. Giles Dennington, senior government relations manager at TikTok, told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We always want to do everything we can to give anyone answers on these kinds of issues but there are some things which we simply don’t have.” Speaking on Safer Internet Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about online harms, Mr Dennington said TikTok had been in contact with some of the parents, adding that they “have been through something unfathomably tragic”. In an interview on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, the families accused the tech firm of having “no compassion”. Ellen Roome, mother of 14-year-old Jools, said she had been trying to obtain data from TikTok that she thinks could provide clarity on his death. She is campaigning for legislation to grant parents access to their child’s social media accounts if they die. “We want TikTok to be forthcoming, to help us – why hold back on giving us the data?” Lisa Kenevan, mother of 13-year-old Isaac, told the programme. “How can they sleep at night?” Asked why they had not been able to access that data, Mr Dennington said: “This is really complicated stuff because it relates to the legal requirements around when we remove data and we have, under data protection laws, requirements to remove data quite quickly. That impacts on what we can do.” Data protection requirements to remove data “can impact on what is available”, he said, adding: “Everyone expects that when we are required by law to delete some data, we will have deleted it. “So this is a more complicated situation than us just having something we’re not giving access to. “Obviously it’s really important that case plays out as it should and that people get as many answers as are available.” The lawsuit – which is being brought on behalf of the parents in the US by the Social Media Victims Law Center – alleges TikTok broke its own rules on what can be shown on the platform. Left to right: Parents Hollie Dance, Lisa Kenevan, Liam Walsh and Ellen Roome are taking on TikTok over harmful content It claims that their children died participating in a trend that circulated widely on TikTok in 2022, despite the site having rules around not showing or promoting dangerous content that could cause significant physical harm. While Mr Dennington would not comment on the specifics of the ongoing case, he said of the parents: “I have young kids myself and I can only imagine how much they want to get answers and want to understand what’s happened. “We’ve had conversations with some of those parents already to try and help them in that.” He said the so-called “blackout challenge” predated TikTok, adding: “We have never found any evidence that the blackout challenge has been trending on the platform. “Indeed since 2020 [we] have completely banned even being able to search for the words ‘blackout challenge’ or variants of it, to try and make sure that no-one is coming across that kind of content. “We don’t want anything like that on the platform and we know users don’t want it either.” Mr Dennison noted that TikTok has committed more than $2bn (£1.6bn) on moderating content uploaded to the platform this year, and has tens of thousands of human moderators around the world. He also said the firm has launched an online safety hub, which provides information on how to stay safe as a user, which he said also facilitated conversations between parents and their teens. Mr Dennison continued: “This is a really, really tragic situation but we are trying to make sure that we are constantly doing everything we can to make sure that people are safe on TikTok.” If you are affected by any of the issues raised in this story, support and advice is available via BBC Action Line Source link #TikTok #data #dead #British #teens #erased Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  5. AFL seeks to permanently halt ex-West Coast Eagle Brad Sheppard’s lawsuit over career ending concussions AFL seeks to permanently halt ex-West Coast Eagle Brad Sheppard’s lawsuit over career ending concussions The *********** Football League seeks to permanently halt a lawsuit brought by former West Coast defender Brad Sheppard over career-ending concussion symptoms. Sheppard filed a writ in July 2024 claiming damages, interest and costs for personal injuries suffered while working with the AFL and Eagles football club from 25 November 2009 onwards. “Such accident, injuries, loss and damage having resulted from the negligence and/or breach of contract and/or breach of statutory duty,” the writ states. Camera IconBrad Sheppard. Credit: Mike Owen/via AFL Photos The named defendants are the AFL, the Eagles, and two of the club’s doctors Gerard Taylor and Alex Strahan. But in a case management conference in the Supreme Court of WA on Tuesday, it emerged the AFL had last week filed an application for a stay of proceedings. Cameron Maclean, representing the league, told Registrar Mark Fatharly that the plaintiff had “pushed for mediation” but that should not be programmed until after the stay application was heard. The first defendants had not had the opportunity to interrogate the details of Sheppard’s loss particulars and view the medical evidence, which went to the heart of the damages claim, Mr Maclean said. Graham Droppert SC, representing Sheppard, said none of the defendants had so far made any efforts to review the medical evidence and mediation could ensure the matter progressed “rather than doing nothing before the stay application”. “People need to come to a mediation conference at least with an open mind,” Mr Droppert said. But Registrar Fatharly said mediation could be swiftly listed at a future date and there was “nothing stopping the parties conferring”. “That can happen in the background,” he said. Camera IconBrad Sheppard is suing his former team, the AFL and two of the club’s doctors. Credit: Ian Munro/The West *********** The parties must advise the court of their availability by Wednesday afternoon for a half-day stay application hearing to be held after April 24. Outside court, both lawyers would not comment on the details of the application. The 200-game defender pulled the pin on his AFL career in 2021 due to medical advice at age 30. In March 2023, he told the ABC how the concussions had left him with “head spins”, poor concentration and constant tiredness. The West does not suggest that there is any liability arising for any of the defendants. The claims in the action will have to be determined by the Court unless they are settled by the parties. 6. Rupee’s Biggest Advance in Two Years Sends Bears Scurrying Rupee’s Biggest Advance in Two Years Sends Bears Scurrying (Bloomberg) — Sign up for the India Edition newsletter by Menaka Doshi – an insider’s guide to the emerging economic powerhouse, and the billionaires and businesses behind its rise, delivered weekly. Most Read from Bloomberg India’s rupee rallied by the most in over two years on suspected strong intervention by the central bank, catching traders offguard after the currency hit a series of record lows in recent weeks. The rupee gained nearly 1%, the most since November 2022, to 86.6362 per dollar in Asia’s best performance on Tuesday. The surprise rally “will take out speculative positioning,” said Ashhish Vaidya, head of treasury at DBS Bank Ltd. in Mumbai. “It’s a very smart move by the RBI.” The rupee has weakened significantly since the new Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra took office in December, encouraging speculation that he’s more open to letting the currency float more freely. Malhotra in his first comments on forex strategy last week said the central bank’s policy remains consistent in its aim to maintain stability without hurting market efficiency. Tuesday’s gain “smoothens things out a little bit” after the steady depreciation in recent weeks, said Vaidya. An email and a phone call to the RBI’s spokesperson weren’t immediately answered. The rupee hit a fresh low Monday after the central bank cut interest rates last week. A stronger dollar, spurred by US President Donald Trump’s tariffs have also weighed on emerging-market currencies, including the rupee. “The RBI may have sold $7 billion yesterday, and has again possibly intervened today to the tune of $4 billion,” said Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors. “This is taken from estimates provided by interbank brokers.” –With assistance from Bhaskar Dutta and Malavika Kaur Makol. 11. iOS 18.3.1 Update Released With Fix for Critical, Actively Exploited USB Security Flaw iOS 18.3.1 Update Released With Fix for Critical, Actively Exploited USB Security Flaw iOS 18.3.1 began rolling out to users on Monday, and the latest update for supported iPhone models arrives with an important patch for a critical security flaw. The vulnerability allowed some attackers to gain access to a user’s iPhone, even while it was locked. Apple has also confirmed that the security flaw may have been exploited to target some individuals. Users with eligible iPhone models should update to the latest version of iOS, which includes a fix for the vulnerability. iOS 18.3.1 Update Fixes USB Restricted Mode Vulnerability Apple’s release notes for the iOS 18.3.1 and iPadOS 18.3.1 update state that the company has fixed a vulnerability in the Accessibility service on its mobile and tablet operating systems. According to Apple, the security flaw would allow a physical attack on a locked device, which could be used to disable USB Restricted Mode. The iPhone maker introduced USB Restricted Mode with iOS 11.4.1 in 2018, and the feature is designed to block all communication with a connected USB accessory. Users need to unlock their device to connect it to their accessory, which won’t work if the device has not been unlocked within the past hour. The latest release notes state that Apple is aware that the security flaw may have been used in an “extremely sophisticated attack against targeted individuals”. It’s worth noting that an attacker would need to have physical access to a user’s device in order to gain access to the device. Apple has credited Bill Marczak, a researcher at The Citizen Lab at The University of Toronto’s Munk School with identifying the security flaw. Marczak has also urged users with eligible iPhone and iPad models should update to the latest iOS 18.3.1 update, which should include a fix for the vulnerability. iOS 18.3.1 is available for the latest iPhone 16 series, as well as older models going back to the iPhone XS. iPhone and iPad users can launch the Settings app and tap on General > Software Update > Install Now in order to install the update. 15. Tragedy Strikes When Florida Trooper Chases Stolen Camaro Tragedy Strikes When Florida Trooper Chases Stolen Camaro Read the full story on The Auto Wire Tragedy Strikes When Florida Trooper Chases Stolen Camaro It seems like a lot of criminals, including this suspect in a stolen Chevy Camaro leading Florida Highway Patrol on a chase, don’t understand fleeing puts lives in danger. Not only are they taking their own life into their hands, the cops and even innocent people just trying to get where they need are at risk Cybertruck records Ram driver road raging. Sadly, tragedy strikes when an FHP trooper spots a ****** Camaro, recognizing it as a vehicle that’s run from local police before. The muscle car is also reportedly stolen, likely being used in the commission of other crimes. Unsurprisingly, when the trooper turns on his lights and sirens, the Camaro driver hits it, leading the trooper on a high-speed chase on city streets. After the suspect winds through several turns, it seems like he’s lost the trooper. But keep in mind dashcam footage doesn’t show everything the naked eye perceives, because the trooper seems to know exactly where the stolen muscle car went. He catches up enough you can see the Chevy in the footage again. But just when it seems our suspect is cornered at a red light with stolid traffic stopped and a high cement median to detain him, he squeezes between two of the stopped cars and blows through the intersection. However, our determined and resourceful suspect is now being followed by at least three FHP units, with two in front of our camera car at this point. The might of the radio is proving to be a little much. Probably panicking because he’s picking up more pursuers, our suspect pushes it through another red light. This time he isn’t so lucky, hitting the cross traffic so he wrecks out. Sadly, the driver and passenger in the SUV the suspect hit both sustain injuries requiring hospitalization. This isn’t the kind of outcome anyone wants, but sadly when criminals run from police, they sometimes run into innocent bystanders. 17. AFL open to prospect of establishing Mental Health Round in wake of Adam Hunter and Troy Selwood deaths AFL open to prospect of establishing Mental Health Round in wake of Adam Hunter and Troy Selwood deaths The AFL is open to exploring a Mental Health Round, following calls by former players for the competition to do more to highlight the insidious issue. The deaths of Adam Hunter and Troy Selwood last week sparked plenty of talk about the impact of mental health struggles for both current and former players. AFL head of inclusion and social policy Tanya Hosch says a themed round to highlight mental health was “one of many suggestions we will continue to consider”. “We have Spud’s Game, which is a really important game and extremely well supported and something that St Kilda holds… I am sure we will continue to build on that,” said Hosch, in Perth to promote Saturday’s twilight Indigenous All Stars game against Fremantle at Optus Stadium. “What’s is most important is we are having the discussion around mental health in our society, that people in football aren’t immune from mental health issues. “I have seen enormous progress in the code in the time I have been at the AFL and I am going into my ninth season. Camera IconTanya Hosch with Stephen Michael in Perth on Tuesday. Credit: Daniel Carson/AFL Photos/AFL Photos via Getty Images “As a game it is really important we don’t shy away from having these important conversations, but the conversations have to be met with actions. “I am really pleased to say those programs and approaches and the openness with which these conversations are being had about mental health, about the drastic and extremely sad impact they can have, is being dealt with in the game.” Spud’s Game, named in honour of late St Kilda great Danny Frawley, is an annual marquee match aimed at raising funds to fight mental ill health in Australia in the wake of his death in 2019. Former Carlton and Brisbane forward Brendan Fevola was among the AFL and AFLW players calling for the AFL to bring the issue to the forefront with an annual mental health round. “We see it all the time that players have mental health problems, and I just feel like the AFL aren’t equipped … or doesn’t shine enough light on mental health for men,” Fevola said. I thought I was this big footy player, I earn a bit of money, and if I said something I thought people wouldn’t like me.” Carlton and West *********** great Ken Hunter, who was hospitalised with severe depression in the 1980s, called on AFL clubs to make a key change in player ******** management as the football community emerges from a dark week. Adam Hunter was found unresponsive at a home near Bunbury early last Thursday morning after training with his South Bunbury club. Selwood died 24 hours earlier. “As an industry we can do a lot better,” Ken Hunter told The Herald Sun ahead of a past players event taking place at the end of February which will feature a panel of former players talking about their post-football struggles. “I spoke publicly about mental health in 1999 and I was the first person to do that. “I think the industry could do a lot better and there should be a full-time ******** person similar to what Gavin Crosisca is doing at Collingwood. “Mental illness doesn’t have to be a life sentence. “There needs be a holistic approach. We keep continuing to see it as weakness. “You’re also admitting that you are struggling and that the problem actually becomes real. “That’s the scariest thing, we push these feelings down — or these emotions down, or the challenges — and as soon as we actually talk about them, that’s when they actually become real.” Source link #AFL #open #prospect #establishing #Mental #Health #wake #Adam #Hunter #Troy #Selwood #deaths Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  18. Jim Cramer Says Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) Keeps Hitting New Highs Because They Put A Ceiling On Many Products Jim Cramer Says Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) Keeps Hitting New Highs Because They Put A Ceiling On Many Products We recently published an article titled Jim Cramer’s Thoughts On These 8 Stocks and the Packaged Goods Playbook. In this article, we are going to take a look at where Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ:COST) stands against the other stocks. Jim Cramer, the host of Mad Money, recently took a deep dive into the challenges facing the consumer packaged goods sector, offering his perspective on the factors driving the decline of these stocks. “The recent decline in the consumer packaged goods stocks, I find it breathtaking… Why is this happening? The truth is, there are a host of reasons, and every time you think that things have gotten better, they seem to have gotten worse, much worse than you’ve imagined.” READ ALSO Jim Cramer’s Thoughts on These 9 Stocks and Jim Cramer Discussed 10 Stocks Leading the Dow Higher in 2025 Cramer noted that many companies within the sector seem to believe that younger consumers will settle for smaller portions of food and that this might mitigate some of the challenges. While Cramer acknowledged that this shift in consumer behavior is part of the equation, he argued that many companies are overlooking the significant impact of GLP-1 weight loss drugs. These medications, which curb cravings for junk food, pose a serious threat, as Cramer sees them as something that could be widely adopted in the United States. He then added: “Oh, and let’s not forget about the problem of tariffs. You’re getting some sudden price increases for many goods. Someone has to pay for the tariffs. These companies hope it will be you because if it’s not you, it’s them.” Another significant challenge for companies in the packaged goods space is the difficulty of raising prices. Cramer explained that while many companies try to increase prices, they often face fierce competition from major retailers and online marketplaces, which offer private-label products that consumers increasingly recognize as being just as good as the branded alternatives. While private labels are not seeing explosive growth at the moment, Cramer pointed out that they are exerting pressure on all prices, including those of established brands. Furthermore, Cramer observed that the price hikes implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to consumer fatigue, with many shoppers now seeking better value. “I don’t know what turns around the consumer packaged goods stocks, mergers would make sense. This new antitrust department probably blessed the concentration. Maybe the companies that slash prices the deepest ultimately win. No matter, this moment is untenable. The stocks can’t find their footing, just too many forces against them. These used to be safety stocks for heaven’s sake, but they’re safe no more.” Story Continues Our Methodology For this article, we compiled a list of 8 stocks that were discussed by Jim Cramer during the episode of Mad Money on February 5. We listed the stocks in the order that Cramer mentioned them. We also provided hedge fund sentiment for each stock as of the third quarter of 2024, which was taken from Insider Monkey’s database of 900 hedge funds. The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Is Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) The Best Stock To Buy For Financial Stability? A customer in a warehouse aisles, browsing the wide range of branded and private-label products. Number of Hedge Fund Holders: 75 Cramer highlighted that Costco Wholesale Corporation’s (NASDAQ:COST) quality private-label products and low prices are contributing to its rise. “If you’re in the consumer packaged goods business, you have a hard time raising prices because when it goes up too much, you’re gonna get bushwhacked by an Amazon or a Costco, both of which offer really terrific private label products that many shoppers know that are as good as the originals. We buy Costco Kirkland brand toilet paper… We know from the former Costco, CFO, Richard Galanti that if these companies charge too much, it’s easy to bring them down simply by creating a homegrown competition, the excellent Kirkland brand… And there’s a reason why Walmart and Costco keep hitting new highs. They put a ceiling on so many products, both by forcing the suppliers to keep prices down or by blitzing them with house brands that seem just as good at a lower price.” Costco (NASDAQ:COST) operates a membership-only warehouse model, offering a variety of branded and private-label products in bulk at lower prices, appealing to customers looking for value on larger purchases. Overall COST ranks 6th on our list of the stocks Jim Cramer recently discussed. 21. China Vanke gets $383 million loan from state shareholder China Vanke gets $383 million loan from state shareholder HONG KONG (Reuters) – Cash-strapped China Vanke said its major shareholder, state-owned Shenzhen Metro, is giving it a 2.8 billion yuan ($383.12 million) loan, in a sign the government is stepping up efforts to stabilise the property developer. Vanke, in return, will pledge 211.5 million shares, or 18.3%, of its listed property services unit, Onewo Inc, as collateral, the company said in a filing late on Monday. The loan is the first liquidity support from Shenzhen Metro after a senior management reshuffle in Vanke last month that increased state oversight and intervention to contain any non-repayment risks. Vanke’s bonds jumped on Tuesday after the loan announcement, with the offshore bond due May 2025 bid at 97.111 cents on the dollar in morning trade, up from 94.8 cents a day ago, while its yuan bond due March 2027 rallied 13.5%. In a separate filing on Monday, Vanke published a repayment announcement for its 3 billion yuan notes maturing on February 16, signalling that it will make the repayment on time. Analysts said the Shenzhen Metro loan shows the authorities’ efforts to avoid a bond default by Vanke. They added that it is a good deal for Vanke because of the higher-than-market loan to value ratio at 70% and a favourable interest rate of 2.34% as of Monday’s calculation based on the loan prime rate (LPR). They, however, said the amount is small compared to the more than 30 billion yuan of Vanke public bonds maturing in the remainder of 2025. JPMorgan said in a research note that given Shenzhen Metro only had 30 billion yuan of cash, the authorities will need to either inject more capital into the railway company owned by the Shenzhen government, or ask other state-owned companies to acquire assets from Vanke. The brokerage said Vanke’s liquidity will also hinge on its home sales. “If Vanke’s sales become worse than expected, such that the funding required for not just bond repayment but also for home delivery has become larger than expected, the point might come where Shenzhen Metro may consider if bond restructuring/extension might be a more pragmatic approach,” it wrote. Vanke currently holds a 57% stake in Onewo. It said in the filing it will use the proceeds from the shareholder loan to repay debt in the open market. Shares of Vanke in Hong Kong edged up 0.9% by noon on Tuesday, while its shares in Shenzhen slid 1.5%. Shares of Onewo were down 1.1%.
